Preferred Solution: Need new keyboard for Portege 4000/4010

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Need new keyboard for Portege 4000/4010

How about the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country??
Did you ask them?? I several times ago I have ordered a notebook drive for my unit and I believe it?s possible to order every spare part.

Contact the guys and ask for the compatible part?

Out of the blue, I am experiencing keyboard problems on my portege 4010. I have difficulty booting up and now that I have, I can't access certain problems, the keys get stuck, funny bleeping noises...all the symptoms of a dodgy keyboard. Anything I can do other than buy a replacement keyboard (v.expensive) or use an external keyboard?

I personally have not dropped anything on the keyboard, therefore can probelms just develop overnight or should I interogate my husband.

Answer:Keyboard Problems on my Portege 4010

Maybe your husband has changed something? ;)
But seriously, if you have some problems with booting and with the keyboard in my opinion you should try to recover you OS. If the malfunction stills the same I would recommend to contact the ASP for further informations.

Can anyone tell me how to type the @ character please?
When I attempt to type that character my screen shows " .
This also applies to the # character - which shows a $ sign.
There must be a toggle to access these characters.

Please advise.

Does anyone know if I can change the slimbay on my portege 4010 to a CD-R, or ideally a DVD-R?
If so what are the best places to get these?
(I live in the UK)

Thanks for any suggestions,

Answer:Portege 4010: How to install cd-r or dvd-r?

I have found info that this Portege is delivered with two drives. The drives are:
Toshiba (SD-C2502) and TEAC (DV28E-B).

I really don?t know if any DVD-R/RW drive is compatible but you can contact service partner in your country and ask them. Usually they make hardware upgrade and should have enough experience.

Other way, try to find some notebook upgrade shop in your country.

Answer:Portege 4010 - After RAM upgrade nothing happens

It sounds like that the new RAM is not compatible with your notebook.
What manufacture is it? If it?s a no-name module you should buy another one like Kingston, Infineon or something else.

What memory have you installed before upgrade or do you use only the new module in the notebook?

Hello everybody,
today i got a used Portege 4010. I pluged in the powercable and wanted to start it. Green DC, orange battery lamp and when i switched it on a gree Power on lamp appears. But thats all, nothing more happens. The screen remains black, only a very little sound is in the machine, i think this is the HD. The curiosity was, that i unplugged the power cable (while the Power lamp was on)and the Laptop was booting!? I wanted to do this again, but no chance. Only 2 times i got it to boot this way, Switch on-nothing->Switch off/Switch on-nothing->unplugging the power cord->booting!? I tried then to boot from a self booting Knoppix(linux)CD but after 10 seconds loading linux the screen went black again! Can anyone help me? What could that be? Battery? Ram? Wherer can i do a Cmos clear? It's very frustrating :-( Thanks a lot, greetings from germany, Chris

Answer:Portege 4010: No Booting

Update: Now i tried a 128mb Pc100 ram from a other laptop. When i switchen on, the were 3 beeps. So i think the problem is because of the ram. it is a HYNIX PC133S-333-542 256mv Sync CL3.

I have a Portege 4010 and cannot find the memory expansion bay to upgrade the memory. Under my laptop is the harddrive, dvd, battery and what I think should be the memory, BUT it has 2 wires attached to it.

Answer:Portege 4010 - Memory upgrade

The memory modules are hidden under the keyboard!
So you will have to remove firstly a think plastic cover above the F1-F12 keys.
Then you should find 2 screws which secure the keyboard.

Please be careful because the keyboard is attached to motherboard with a thin flat cable?

Then you could see the memory modules. Gently press out on two latches.
One end of the expansion memory module will pop up. Then grasp the expansion memory module and pull it out.

Hope this helps...

I have a Toshiba Portege 4010 laptop and when I went into Phones and modems the two inbuilt modem drivers PCIMCA and AMR software modem both had not present next to them. I then uninstalled the modem drivers from the device manager expecting them to be automatically installed on reboot but that did not happen. I then installed the modem drivers from the Tools and Utilities CD after installing the drivers and rebooting the computer I went back into Phones and modems in the control panel and it was blank. I then tried installing the modem drivers from the Toshiba Website but that did not work either. Does anyoone know where I am going wrong or how to resolve this problem.

I'd like to upgrade my Portege 4010 memory and I know that I need 144pin/PC133 SO-DIMM SD-RAM. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out (even after talking to Toshiba Austria), if I have to buy low or maybe high density memory.

Most of the cheap memory on eBay is high density and I'm afraid to buy an incompatible one.

I hope somebody already has experience with that. It seems to be my last chance to get some competent information.

Thank you.

Answer:Memory upgrade on Portege 4010

As I remember maximum memory for Portege 4010 is 1 GB (2 x 512 MB) and it doesn't matter if you choose high or low density version.
If you need 100% guarantee you choose the low density version.

I recently bought a reconditioned Portege 4010 and it works great, except that the sound glitches a lot. It seems to be random, can occur like once in 3-4 seconds or it can sound fine for a few minutes then *glitch glitch glitch*. It sounds like the tempo of the sound is slowed down and then catches back up, and it sometimes makes a popping sound.

I previously had a Portege 4000 , which made a little popping sound every once in a while, but it occured rarely, like once every 30 minutes, and was hardly noticeable. On this 4010 it is much worse.

I have all the official Toshiba drivers, running a tweaked installation of XP SP2. I have tried a clean install and the sound has the same glitches.

Right now i am using the ULi drivers i found on the Nvidia download page, they helped a bit, the sound bugs now occur more sporadically, but when they do occur (once every couple minutes or so), they are still as bad as they initially were. Also, the ULi drivers are the only sound drivers i could find that have proper volume levels, with the drivers found on your site the Wave volume distorts when turned over 20-25%, now i don't have to worry as even if it gets set to max like some games do, the sound won't be distorted. I had the same problem on my old Portege 4000, back then i didn't know about the drivers fix and used a volume limiting program to force "naughty" apps and games to respect the mixer settings.

The 4010 is such a great portable, when using a second bat... Read more

Answer:Portege 4010 sound issues

Well, never mind, i fixed it. I found this great program named DPC Latency Checker, and it helped me determine it was the wireless card inducing delays and messing up the sound. I happened to have another card lying around, i replaced the one that was in the notebook and now it's all working fine.

My portege 4010 has had grey marks on its screen for some time. I have tried various screen cleaning fluids and they don't shift them. They appear to come from the screen's contact with the keys?

How can I remove these, or can I replace the piece of transparent plastic that covers the LCD?

Answer:Dirty screen on my Portege 4010

if you can't clean the screen with any different cleaning fluids, it can be that these grey marks are not dirt but dents!

My suggestion is if you can't clean it you should contact a Toshiba Service Partner (perhaps you have warranty) and check it! It can be that the dents are caused by a too high adjusted keyboard. This should be checked to avoid a higher damage.

I,ve just got two of these and they both have marks behind the screen. Almost looks like mould or a spillage on the inside of the surface, they are not electronic type marks ( dead pixels etc ). Can I access the back side of the front surface by dismantling the lid or is this part of some sort of sealed unit.

Answer:Portege 4010 - marks behind screen

I can?t exactly imagine what it could be. I have checked some websites about this unit but I don?t found any marks. If you think that it?s a hardware fault so you should ask the ASP for detailed informations and help.

I am a proud owner of a Toshiba Portege 4010 but the only problem I haven't been able to resolve is the sound.

The problem manifests itself when I use a MP3 playback program (Winamp / TRAKTOR DJ). The music skips for a very short period of time, maybe a 20 millisecond part every 1-2 minutes (aleatory timing).

I tried modifying every buffer option in my mp3 playback programs without any results.
I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 with all the drivers installed from the Toshiba website (including the WINXP sound driver)

The problem does not disappear if the laptop is running plugged in (best CPU performance).

If someone encountered this problem and knows the solution, I would really appreciate.
I use this laptop for background music playback (I'm a DJ).

Best regards
Mircea Bartic

Answer:Sound issues on Portege 4010

Hi Mircea

It is not easy to say what the problem can be. If I understood you right this occur just if the notebook runs on battery power supply. Am I right?

I presume that CPU or maybe HDD activity interrupts the music. Please try to check CPU activity settings (Performance) in power saver tool under profile which is used if the unit runs on battery power supply.

It is also possible that some applications (antivir program) forced HDD activity. Please check all those aspects.

Well, you are right. After the Toshiba driver and utility installation your notebook will singing & dancing like a rock star ;)
Now, it's getting serious.

1.) Chipset utility
2.) Common modules
3.) Graphic driver
4.) Sound driver
5.) etc?.

Hello, I am having an issue with an older Toshiba. It hasn't been used in a while, but when I went to use it for the first time in about 2 years, it is giving me an error message saying, "**** Bad check sum (CMOS) **** Check system. Then press F1 key." I can press the key and go into a BIOS setup screen, but after about 1 minute it just shuts off. I know that I may need to change the BIOS battery, but would that be what's causing the sudden shut off? If it helps, it also makes a single clicking sound when it shuts off, but I assume that it's just because of the screen turning off. Any help would be greatly appreciated, but if it can't be fixed it might just be time for a new laptop... Would love to salvage this one though =(

Answer:Toshiba Portege 4010 Startup then shut down.

I am tired of looking for a suitable hard drive for my Toshiba Portege 4000 (PIII) laptop. The only ones available come in 80GB. Is there any way I can fit that hard drive size in my laptop? I must know this before I buy one.

Answer:Can I use 80GB in Portege 4000?

Very hard to say if the BIOS will recognize the new inserted 80GB HDD.
As far as I know the Port?g? 4000 was delivered with the 20GB HDD.

Hmm? in my personal opinion the 80GB could works but cannot say it for sure!!!
You will have to test it because the Toshiba does not provide any official informations about the compatible HDD sizes.

What you need is a HDD which supports an IDE interface. You could buy one with ATA5 (U-DMA 5 100MB/sec) but it will run only at 66MB/sec due to the HDD controller limitation.

Answer:Portege 4000: How can I open the notebook?

In my opinion it?s not necessary to open the notebook for cleaning the keyboard buttons.
You can carefully remove the key-top from the "bad keys" and check that there is nothing caught in the key mechanism.
But which key malfunction does occur?
Is it a key mechanism fault?

I have an old Toshiba Portege 4000 laptop.
The user manual says a memory upgrade up to 512MB (2x256MB) is possible. But the technical specification on the toshiba-direct website says a memory upgrade up to 1GB (2x512MB) is possible.
I brought 2x512MB (SO-DIMM 512MB SD RAM SDRAM PC133 PC 133 512 MB 144 PIN) NO-NAME memory at ebay and it doesn't work. The system won't boot.

Now my question. Can I go up to 1GB with the toshiba recommended Kingston memory or won't it work in general?
Anyone there with experience on this?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Portege 4000 memory upgrade 1GB?

normally a portege 4000 is indeed upgradeble up to 1 gb ( 2x 512 mb sdram pc133, 3,3v )

however the architecture and number of chips on the modules can cause a incomptability, so 'bad luck' I suppose

on ebay-express you can find them for about 50 US$ ( search for portege 4000 ; memory )

I've installed the Lucent Wireless LAN driver ( for this laptop which has W2K.

However, I can't seem to control it! I also installed a Wireless Hotkey, but there are no instructions on it.

This laptop originally had W98SE on it, and it was a struggle to get that working.

Any ideas?

Answer:Portege 4000 - How to enable WLan using W2k

The FN buttons are controlled by Common Modules.
Please install Common Modules in order to get the FN key working!
Additionally you have to install Wireless Hotkey

Furthermore there are two different WLan drivers for Portege W2k; Cisco Wlan driver and Lucent Technologies Wlan driver.
Be sure that you are using the right driver!

I've got a Portege 4000 and am looking to move on from Windows 98SE. The obvious alternatives are W2000, XP or Ubuntu Linux.

If I can find a full version of WXP, would I be able to do a clean install (rather than upgrade) and get drivers?
Officially, the laptop is only compatible with 98SE or 2000, but these systems are old now.

I imagine if I upgrade XP over 98SE it will keep all the drivers, however this isn't my preferred method of installation and clean installs are better.

Answer:Portege 4000 - Win 98SE would like to upgrade

Win98 uses the Win95 code base, which is not compatible with NT/2000/XP. So the Win98 drivers wont work.

You should backup your documents, format C:, then install XP fresh.

You can use Windows 2000 drivers in XP - its basically the same OS internally.
If for some reason the Win2000 drivers don't work, you can use XP drivers from other models of a similar era.

I took this new module out and left the original in there and it booted perfectly. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Answer:Memory upgrade on Portege 4000

It?s a clear case dude? either the memory module is faulty or you use a not compatible and not supported one!!!!
The Portege 4000 supports max 1024MB (2x512MB) memory.
I think you should try the Toshiba recommended memory SDRAM modules like these:
PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)
PC133 128MB (PA3085U-1M12)

My Portege 4000 turns off abruptly after about 20 minutes, sometimes it holds our for 30-40 mins.
It then won't power back on for a few hours.

Here's what I've tried, and it still happens:
-On AC, with and without battery
-With a different (identical) AC apator
-Unplugged running on battery
-Held at BIOS screen (incase it was a Windows issue)

The fan is working, although it doesn't feel very powerful.
And the power LED is flashing an error code (how can I decode this?).

Although I don't really use it very much, I really don't want to junk my little Portege.
Any ideas?

Answer:Portege 4000 powers down after 20 mins

It sounds like a notebook overheating? if the temperature is too high the notebook shuts down to prevent the hardware from damage?

But the flashing error code is unusual. In my knowledge the long means 1 and short 0
Then you will get a number like for example this: 0001 0001 because of LSB (least significant bit) you have to read from behind 1000 1000 then convert it in HEX. That?s all
Check also this:

But listen buddy? I think you should contact the service technician? the guy should check this notebook? the fault is a little bit strange

If you need an MPEG-2 decoder then I would recommend installing some codec packages.
+K-Lite Mega Codec Pack+ contains all needed (and more) codecs.

You should try it.

PS: Why you don't use any 3rd party players? For example the *VLC player* is for free and it's a great player. It handles all possible files.

i do not have a floppy drive on my machine, only usb ports and a sd card slot. How can i upgrade the bios?

Answer:Portege 4000 bios upgrade

The easiest way is to create a dos boot cd-rom. There are several descriptions on the web. Google for it.
Add the extracted Toshiba bios files, ec29nobb.bin, chgbiosa.exe and chgfirma.exe to the CD-rom.

At first boot from the cd and run 'chgfirma ec29nobb.bin'.
Now the ECKBC-Firmware is written (don't power off during flash!!!)
Than boot again from cd and run 'chgbiosa'.
This flashes the Bios.
Both flash are necessary!

Here is how to extract the Toshiba bios file.
At first you have to extract the R211VOL2.exe file. Easiest way to do so is to use 'universal extractor' -- google for it.
After this you will get the file R211VOL2.IMA. This is a floppy image file.
You can extract the single files in the archiv using winimage (trial version should work).

Good luck!

First and foremost, I would like to thank Toshiba for producing such a great product. This Toshiba laptop was bought in September 2001, with Windows 98 installed and is still running 10 years later!!! This is a great testament to all the designers and developers at Toshiba.

I have now brought it into the real world with Windows XP!

I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade the cpu without replacing the motherboard? In addition I bought a PCMCIA USB 2.0 notebook card. My dongle prefers the real USB sockets, but is there any way of upgrading the sockets from 1.1 to 2.0 or should I buy an external adapter?

The hard disc on my portege 4000 has just crashed, can anyone please provide any guidance on a suitable replacement or upgrade part, where to purchase one and what is involved in making the change?

Answer:Portege 4000 hard disc replacement

the HDD replacement is not very difficult on the notebooks because mostly the HDD is laced at the bottom of the unit and it?s only necessary to remove the little cover.

To remove the HDD, follow the steps below:
1. Turn the computer upside down.
2. Remove two silver screws securing the HDD cover.
3. Lift off the HDD cover.
4. Grasp the plastic tab on the HDD to disconnect the HDD from the system board, then pull the HDD.
5. Place the HDD pack on a flat surface and remove four flat-head screws.
6. Remove the HDD bracket.

That?s all :)

PS: I think you can use 10Gb, 20Gb and 30Gb HDDs

As far as I know this oldie, Port?g? 4000, was equipped with the Wireless LAN ORiNOCO (Agere) card.
According to the user manual the Wlan card supports only Wired Equivalent Privacy (short WEP) data encryption.
So I doubt the WPA would be available.

I have done a clean install of XP on Portege 4000. The system was previously defaulted to 98SE.

Noticed that there is a yellow exclamation mark in the other devices relating to the video controller (VGA compatible). I have downloaded the display driver from the Toshiba site (if this is the right thing?), but can't seem to install. There is no setup.exe to help me.

My XP screen covers only 3/4 or so of the total display, so something's wrong somewhere...

Answer:Portege 4000 - How to install display driver for XP?

The Toshiba page is the right one for all drivers so you can download all drivers for every Toshiba notebook on the Toshiba page.

If the display driver package doesn?t contain a setup.exe file you install the driver manually. Therefore go in device manager and make a right click on the video controller and select ?update driver?. Then install the driver manually and search yourself for the directory where you have extracted the files.
Follow the screen instructions and restart the notebook ? That?s all!! :)

Hi all.

I am having a slight problem with a reinstall of windows 2000 on my portege p4000. Everything seems to work fine except for the wireless. All the drivers are in and there is nothing in the device manager that is listed as sans driver, the wireless client shows a connection to my router, but ipconfig indicates that there is no connection at all.

Could it be that I have installed the drivers and utilities in the wrong order? I would use my recovery cds, but they are damaged.

Does anyone know the correct order to install the drivers or where I can get this information?

Many thanks,

Hello Rob

Installations order is important for several things but not for WLAN driver installation. I presume in your case there is no problem with WLAN driver.

Have you tried to configure WLAN using Windows WLAN options? Anyway there must be some connectivity problem. Have you tried to restart your router?

I have finally decided to settle with XP rather than 2000. Whilst performance is slightly slower, support will be better.

Noticed that the internal wireless card is 802.11b which is slow. Can this be replaced with a newer one (n or g?) or are there motherboard limits? Is it safer/more advisable to buy an external wireless card. Can this go up to n or only g?

Will also have to buy a USB 2.0 pc card as this is only USB 1.1.

Answer:Portege 4000 - Can I upgrade WLAN card to Draft N?

You can not use Draft N because the 802.11 N needs 2 wires WLan antenna.
The older WLan standards use 2 wires antenna and I assume this oldie has been equipped also with 3 wires WLan antenna.

So theoretically only the 802.11 G WLan standard is possible.

As far as I know you will need a miniPCI Wlan card which supports the 802.11 standard.
So goggle for some options.

I have a Portege 4000 and would like to upgrade the memory from 256MB to 512MB.
It has 98SE and the user would still like to keep this system.

Does anyone know if there is a known problem upgrading to 512MB as I saw a thread in 2005 from someone who had a problem?

I guess the memory is PC133 SODIMM. I ordered a 512MB RAM from aememory last year, but the system would not even start. Perhaps they had sent me the wrong chip?

Answer:Portege 4000 - I would like to upgrade memory from 256MB to 512MB

Hmm?. maybe the RAM modules are not 100% compatible?
From my knowledge it should be possible to upgrade the RAM to max. 1GB (2 x 512MB)
You could also upgrade it to 512MB using one module or two 256MB modules.

You have to use the 144-Pin PC133 SODIMM modules and I found these modules which are compatible:
PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)

Check also this page:

There are some modules which should work together with Portege 4000

I'm having a few issues with my Portege 4000 at the moment. I installed XP on one disk, but will need more RAM as I only have 256MB...

- Have tried 2 manufacturers but the PC133 512 isn't compatible. However my system has an IBM chip of PC100 256 in it, which was bought at an earlier stage last year, after much trial and error, and I'm now wondering whether the motherboard will be more suited to PC100 rather than PC133?

- Am considering alternative options to XP, namely 98SE or 2000 as these are lighter operating systems. I can put this on an alternative (test) disk. Is it possible to set up a partition for the Recovery CD Rom (which has 98SE) on it and have some space left over for installing another Linux o/s or does its partition manager overwrite everything?

- I have put another post for .exe drivers relating to the display/vga for 98SE and 2000.

- Just fyi, not all Linux distros seem to pick up on the monitor size, so this takes some work...

Many Thanks for any help.

The Protege 4000 is compatible with PC133 modules! As far as I know you can upgrade this notebook's RAM to 1GB (1024MB) and you could use these modules;
PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)
PC133 128MB (PA3085U-1M12)

You could create some partitions on the HDD using an 3rd party tool like Partitions Magic 8. I use this tool and it's really nice.
After you have created 2 or three partitions on the HDD, you could install different OS (operating systems.)

Is it possible to find a replacement HDD for my Portege 4000, since the original is becoming very temperamental?

Answer:Portege 4000 hard disk drive replacemnt - what HDD is compatible?

Hi mate

I think the Portege 4000 is an oldie and in my opinion this notebook supports an 2.5? IDE HDD.
I?m not 100% sure so I recommend installing an hardware diagnostic tool like Everest Home Edit which would provide all information about the internal HDD.
This would help you to get a new, compatible HDD.

Thought I'd found all the drivers but I've got a yellow question mark against " Base system device " in device manager. Don't know what it is so I don't know which driver to install.
Any ideas appreciated.

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

Answer:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

The MS software for this 4000 keyboard allows reassigning or disabling of some of the keys, but offers no such facility for the CTRL key. Because of an apparent problem that I have with the little finger on my right hand it often seems to not only strike the Shift key but also strikes the right CTRL key, which opens various windows depending on the key that is struck with my left hand, i.e. CTRL and then an F opens the Find window. Is there some method such as a registry change where I can disable this right CTRL key only? Thanks.

Answer:Disable a key on MS Ergonomic 4000 keyboard

Im not exactly sure how to do it through windows, sorry.

BUT, as a quick fix until someone here posts an answer, you can always pry off that key to make it harder to press down on it

Hi, instead of buying a new keyboard, I've cleaned this one up and started programming the keys properly. Does anyone use this board? It has 3 'banks' of keys which can be programmed as favourites and I've got one set which I want to use for my photography programmes, while another set opens my standard programmes.Despite having downloaded the latest drivers, I don't seem to have half the options in the list of keys which can be programmed, despite the 4000 being shown as my board.Does anyone know how I can switch between the different banks so I can use the relevant set of favourite keys? The help files say to make sure the relevant kb is selected, as that determines what the available keys are shown, but I can't find anything helpful either on the MS site or in Google.

I have a MS Natural Ergonomic 4000 Keyboard. It has been working fine for...well, two years? Sometime ago I performed a Windows Update and the keyboard stopped working. Reinstalled the MS Keyboard & Mouse Center and it worked fine. This weekend I rebooted my computer (Windows Updates again), came into work Monday and the keyboard stopped working. Reinstalling MS Keyboard & Mouse Center doesn't make a difference.

-Windows 7 detects when I plug in the keyboard, even the model model (picture and all), but the PnP interface can not find the driver. (Still doesn't work when I install it via MS Keyboard & Mouse Center, even though the program installs fine).
-I have gone in and removed ALL USB devices, rebooted, and the keyboard works UNTIL the Windows 7 PnP starts detecting hardware. Then it breaks the keyboard again.
-This keyboard works on another Windows 7 computer, as well as a Linux computer.
-The keyboard is getting power
-The keyboard works at bootup (F8, Bios, etc)
-Plugging in a standard keyboard (Dell) works fine.
-Restoring to an earlier restore point hasn't helped.

Any thoughts? Is there anyway to find just that specific keyboard driver, without installing the MS Center (which obviously doesn't work?) Any help would be greatly appreciated, my hands don't work well on standard keyboards (they literally hurt), so I'm really hoping to get an ergo keyboard working again.

Answer:MS Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000 No longer working

I suggest uninstalling ALL keyboard software, clean up any remnants, and then go into Device Manager and expanding the Keyboard selection > right click on the keyboard > properties > Drivers Tab > Uninstall.
The keyboard should then be uninstalled fron Device Manager, but if it isn't, right click on the keyboard listed under Keyboards > and Uninstall.

Then restart the computer. Windows should load a generic keyboard driver (providing it does not find any of that old software/driver stuff) and you should have all normal keyboard functionality.

If that does not work you may need to do some more aggressive removal (registry editing) if you can't locate an un-installation program for that original package.

Number lock is on and the numeric keys, enter, and delete keys on the number pad function normally. I've re-installed the driver (MouseKeyboardCenter_64bit_ENG_2.2.173) and also unplugged the USB and plugged it back in.
None of those solved the problem? Any other ideas?

So, I was having computer problems, and I haven't been able to use my desktop for the past week, until late yesterday night when I fixed it. I had a software problem (it was PresentationFontCache.exe). I was already kind of disappointed with Microsoft for that bug which caused me to not be able to use my computer until I could fix it. Well, yesterday when I first turned it on, the keyboard worked fine (Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000), until I plugged in my new Microsoft 4000 mouse. It tried installing drivers for my keyboard, and it messed everything up. The keyboard works fine on startup (f8, etc.) but once I'm at the login screen, the keyboard doesn't respond at all. It works fine on all of my other computers, which all run Windows. I have Windows 7 Professional. Like I said, the keyboard worked fine until it installed the drivers for my mouse, which for some reason made it attempt to install drivers for my keyboard again, which made my keyboard unusable with my computer. Also, system restore doesn't do anything to fix the issue.
How on earth can I fix this? The control panel even detects the name for the device, but not the picture, and says it needs troubleshooting, yet when I do the troubleshooting thing it doesn't do anything to fix it.

Hi all,

after searching the web I didn't found any tricks or tipps to control winamp via the ergonomic 4000. As you may know, there is a special button to start and pause playing of winamp, but not one to skip to next or previous track, like the natural multimedia keyboard has them.

So I wrote two vb-scripts that query for the pid of the running winamp.exe and then send a "b" or "z" to the window that contains winamp. Voila :-)

For all other people out there, I have attached those files. Happy listening.

Good afternoon,
I recently had to install a ergo keyboard for a staff. Programmed the hot-keys for them and when pressed, they opened a new window. The staff would like it to just open a new tab instead. I thought this would be a simple task but I have just not been able to find any information on exactly how to make that happen.
I downloaded the newest software version. Running windows 7.
I would appreciate if anyone with experience with this or similar keyboards could assist me on this. Thank you very much.

Since upgrading to Windows 8, my volume keys and mute key do nothing when pressed. I have a MS Natural Ergonomic 4000 keyboard. I went ahead and downloaded the latest drivers, it detects my keyboard fine, but they still don't work.
All of the other supplemental keys on the top of my keyboard do work. Calculator, mail, search, web/home, my favorites, they all function fine. It's just the volume and mute keys that don't work.
I've read the knowledgebase on this, I'm not using any kind of USB hub, and the buttons worked fine in Windows 7 before I upgraded.

Answer:Ergonomic 4000 Keyboard volume keys not working in Windows 8

Hi Orthos,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this keyboard with Windows 8. I had exactly the same problem as you and it was annoying me like hell :).
I tried reinstalling the "Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard center" from the download sites numerous times, but it didn't solve the problem.
The following fixed it for me:
1. Go to the Start menu and search for Run. Enter.
2. Type services.msc, a list with all Services opens.
3. Look for the "Human Interface Device Access" service.
4. On my PC this was not running and configured to be Manual started.
5. I rightclicked it, selected properties, changed the startup type to "Automatic" and started the service.
6. After that it worked!
Best regards,

Before retiring, I got accustomed to using a MS Natural keyboard and liked it. I just finished building a new computer and decided to buy a MS Natural keyboard, and bought the wired Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. So far, it works fine and my only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be any manual or documentation that explains the various buttons, though there is documentation on programming the keyboard - something I really don't need nor plan to use. If anybody can direct me to useful documentation, I would appreciate it.

The real problem that I'm looking for help on is that just today it started periodically beeping - about once every minute or two. I must have inadvertently pressed some key or combination of keys to cause that, but without any documentation, haven't a clue what's going on or what to do about it.

What does Athlon "64 X2 4000 Dual Core 4000 Processor" mean? I have asystem running at 2.1Ghz and want to buy a motherboard kit to go faster and improve gamability. All the upgrades used to talk about processor speed but now it seems rare to find the spec saying what speed the processor works at. I know they were talking about the speed becomeing difficult to asess in the future but if a game asks for a 2.8 or 3 gig processor how can I identify the right bundle?

Answer:What does Athlon 64 X2 4000 Dual Core 4000 Process

The 4000 bit is the main thing to look at really what they are saying is that it is equivalent to a 4 ghz computer processor, I say equivalent as the processor won't run at that speed it will run slower but because of the way it actually does its work it will be equivalent to a 4 ghz processor.Clear as mud isn't it? Sorry doing my best. The dual core and the x2 tells you it has 2 processors on the one chip so it can run 2 applications at the same time with no loss of speed, if it was a single core and you did the same thing then it would be half the speed as the processor would have to split its processing over the 2 programs. The mention of the 64 is that its optimised for 64 bit windows which doesn't really mean that much as 99 of people do not have 64 bit windows and 64 bit windows has a few differculties with things. Some of the newer games are actually optimised to take advantage of dual core and will run better on a dual core system.Thats roughly it. A 4000 dual core processor is not slow by any means but its rather old and really unless its really, really cheap you should be looking at something a bit faster.

i'm begining to get togeather specs for my new pc, and i'm not sure which processor to get value and performance wise. It's mostly between the single core 64 4000 and the dual core 3800, though if the x2 4000 has somthing special to offer (which im not aware of) i might fork out the extra cash.

What i'd like to know is that does having a dual core processor boast much of an advantage over a single core. The two CPU's are pretty much the same price, but i heard the X2 3800 overclocks really well, so maybe i could get it to 4200 or 4400 on a decent mobo with an ok cooler? If this is true, then the 3800 will definately be my choise.

However, i dont know the overclocking capablilites of the single core 4000, so can anyone give me their opinion on what they think would be the best purchase?

(i would be using my system for pretty intensive gaming)

Also, i'd like your opinion on this cooler; is it a good one for the price, will it let me overclock much and is it worth getting?

Answer:What to get? AMD64 4000, 64 X2 3800 or an X2 4000?

Based on THIS I`d go for the AMD Athlon X2 3800+

If you intend to oc to the max then maybe liquid cooling is the way to go.

Best option for you is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. They can order original keyboard for your machine and exchange it for you.

If you want to do this alone it can be risky, small mistake and you can damage something. Anyway, every keyboard at the back side has part number that can help you to find it Goolging around.

I'm trying to fix an issue with this laptop (R930-157)

When i press the left arrow key, it prints a 6 on screen (notepad)
When i press the spacebar, it prints a / on screen, when disabling numpad the spacebar prints a +
CTRL + spacebar does print a normal space

This does not happen with an external keyboard, only the build in one.
I've tried disabling the touchpad, does not work

Issue reproduced on Windows 10 and Windows 7

Even in the bios the keyboard bahaves strange, the up arrow goes to exit (normal escape)

Tried updating drivers (first uninstalled, rebooted, installed new ones)

First we though it was about the keyboard, so we bought a new keyboard and replace the old one, same issue.
Any tips / suggestions / fixes ?

Hi there,

i was wondering if the M700 keyboard would fit into a M400 Portege?

Just because the M700 seems to have a more "standard" layout which I'd prefer.

If using the M400 screen in an M700 would work, I'd switch to using the M700 but I won't "downgrade" to 800x1280 when I can have 1050x1400. Yes, I'm talking Portrait.

Thanks for any input.

Answer:Does Portege M700 keyboard would fit into a M400?

Well? the Portege M700 should be equipped with the Toshiba Standard Key Layout B5 type.
I found out that the Vendor is Darfon and the total number of keys is: 85(US) 86(Euro) 87(Japan)

So I don?t think the M700 keyboard could be compatible with M400 Portege because as far as I know only the M700 Portege was delivered with this keyboard.

My M600 just got a tiny problem (hope so) today.

The 'x key' doesn't function well. I need to press very hard on this key to show the letter 'x'. It seems the top-left part of this key is stuck so it leans to bottom-right when I press it. How can I fix this problem?

I'm located in Glasgow (G4 0JQ) and not sure if there is any maintenance service office here, but simply find out the nationalwide Pick-Up & Return Service for Notebooks from website. However, I prefer to handle it face to face with the engineer in couple of minutes because I assume it's not a big deal, isn't it?

Thanks a lot,

I wish to clean the keyboard of my Port?g? Z930-105 since I spilled some orange juice on it and its now very sticky.

How can I do that?

Many thanks!!

Answer:Portégé Z930-105 - need to clean the keyboard

What do you mean exactly?
Do you want to remove the keyboard in order to clean it or do you want to clean it without removing the keyboard?

If warranty is valid I would not recommend removing the keyboard since this would cancel your warranty. In such case I would contact an service to keep my warranty valid.

In your case I would use an cotton wool tip and clean water/fluid in order to clean the single keys.

Hello everybody ,

I get a Toshiba Portege R500-10J , with the keyboard QWERTY .
I want to change it with the keyboard AZERTY, because I use usually French.

But I don't find on the net the explanation or details for doing this .
Somebody get some pictures or some advice for change the keyboard of this laptop.

Answer:How can I exchange the keyboard on Portege R500?

Do you really want to replace it by yourself and to lose the warranty validity???
The Port?g? R500 is a great business notebook and I think it?s not the cheapest one.

In your case I would not risk to lose the warranty.
Therefore ask the Toshiba service provider in your country for a compatible keyboard with the AZERY layout and for the replacement.

I think it?s safer.

The keyboard of my Toshiba Z10 is not responding any more.
Tablet mode is fine.

I try reset, reboot, I have installed the patch, nothing, battery is charging through the keyboard.
Thank's for support.

Answer:Portege Z10T-A - keyboard not responding

Hmm… usually the firmware update (patch) should help to resolve such issue.
I would another thread about the same theme and the firmware update was the key.

I also found this Toshiba doc in the knowledge base about the Firmware update for Keybord Docker for Portege Z10t fixes connection problems

But it seems that you already installed the patch but this did not help you.
Therefore I think there is a problem with the keyboard connection.

You should get in contact with Toshiba authorized service in your country in order to check the keyboard.

The keys w, p, f, h, k and l of my M100 keyboard suddenly do not work. Have dismantled and there are no evident problems. Saw on the web someone had similar problem. Anyone know a possible solution? (apart from replacing the keyboard)

Answer:Re: Portege M100 keyboard malfunction

Looks like an keyboard malfunction but did you check if the external keyboard would function properly? Do this?

Nevertheless, it looks like a keyboard issue and for such problem there is just one solution;
You will need a new keyboard and need to replace the old one?

The compatible keyboard could be ordered from an local service partner? otherwise you can check some offers in the internet?

How I change the Keyboard on laptop Portege R830-1DU?
Please send the response to [email protected]

Answer:Re: How to exchange keyboard on Portege R830?

Generally speaking keyboard should be exchanged by authorized personal only. Small mistake can result with broken plastic parts like keyboard connector.
I presume you don?t have experience with this stuff so I strongly recommend you to visit nearest service and ask for help.
By the way: what is wrong with your machine? Why do you want to exchange keyboard?

Hi There!

One of the keys on my R700 Notebook Model R700 PT311A-00Y00Q has a broken key. Apparently you can't get replacement keys, so I need a whole new keyboard.

I found this on EBay: keyboard&_sacat=0

But I can't find a guide to replacing the keyboard, would you mind linking me to a guide?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Portege R700 How to replace the keyboard

I read some reports from users who tried to replace the keyboard on this R700 and this is not very easy.
It?s difficult because you will need to remove other parts like
Battery, sim card, express card slot, memory modules, base assembly to get access to an
aluminum tape from the back of the cover assembly. Then you could turn the cover assembly face up and peel off the keyboard adhered to the insulator.
And additionally you can not use the removed keyboard and keyboard insulator again. You will need to use new parts

I am facing a problem. My laptops keyboard is not working. How can I buy a new key board for this model or how can i solve the problem.

Answer:Portege R100: keyboard is not working

I don?t know what?s the exactly problem with your keyboard but I suppose that the keyboard must be replaced.
In my knowledge the keyboard was secured with 2 screws under the thin cover above the keyboard.
You have to remove the thin cover and then the 2 screws.
Then you will be able to put out the keyboard.

But be careful; the keyboard should be connected with the flat cable to the motherboard.

The compatible keyboard part you can order from the Toshiba service partner in your country.

Is it possible to change a US-keyboard into a german keyboard at the Portege m700? Is it easy to change? How much does a german keyboard cost?

Are there other differences between a US-Version and a German-Version of the M700 ?

ty, greets

Answer:Is it possible to change keyboard at Portege M700?

It IS possible and there should be no technical difference between these keyboards. I don?t know if it?s very hard to exchange a keyboard but it shouldn?t be.
Nowadays I would recommend you to refer to an authorized service partner and order this part there. Maybe it would be good to ask them regarding the warranty conditions after replacing such an keyboard by yourself because if you damage something you could loose the warranty on your machine.

P.S.: You can find the nearest available service partner simply by visiting the official toshiba mobile computers website and check the Support section.

I want the Toshiba Portege Z30-A-1E5, but it is apparently only available to buy from German and Austrian vendors with the QWERTZ keyboard. I would like to buy one and swap over the keyboard to either AZERTY or QWERTY (UK).

However I spoke with a company that does this and they cannot confirm that they can get a part unless I can provide them with a keyboard part number (they also can't give me a quote without it), but this number does not seem to be easy to get a hold of without actually having the computer and taking the keyboard off and looking underneath! I feel a bit nervous spending so much money when there is a chance that I won't be able to swap the keyboard over.

So my question is, can anybody tell me what the keyboard part number is for the portege z30-a-1e5?

Any assistance would be much appreciated!!!!!

Answer:What is the keyboard part number for Portege Z30-A-1E5?

Hi Kate

I?m wondering why you want to purchase a Portege Z30-A-1E5 which isn?t available in UK?
The notebooks are preinstalled with a Windows system in different languages. In case of Portege Z30-A-1E5 available in Germany, the system language would be German.
Also the keyboard supports different layout.

Portege Z30-A-1E5 was equipped with an i7 CPU, 512GB SSD drive and 16GB RAM.
Very similar notebook Portege Z30-A-1D6 was released in UK. Its preinstalled with Windows system in English language and English keyboard layout.
Of course the hardware specifications are a little bit lower (256GB SSD drive and 8GB RAM) but I think this could be upgraded much easier as to replace the keyboard.

However, in case you would purchase the Portege Z30-A-1E5, I recommend you to contact the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country for keyboard replacement. The guys could order the right keyboard from Toshiba and could perform the replacement.

Just one note: the replacement should be done by authorized service provider because of warranty validity. The replacement must be performed by authorized engineer to keep the warranty valid.

can anyone tell me what the size of the connector should be on the Portege A600-120 keyboard?

My keyboard failed last week and I ordered a new one which was supposed to be compatible with A600 but the connector was too wide.

Mine is a flat ribbon termination 15mm wide.

Keyboard serial number is G8C000903EN but a Google serach shows that is the keyboard for the R500....

Answer:Keyboard replacement for Portege A600-120

>can anyone tell me what the size of the connector should be on the Portege A600-120 keyboard?
Unfortunately I cannot help you with this info but at the bottom side of the keyboard you will find label with exact part number.

Strange thing is that using Google and G8C000903EN I cannot find anything.

Can you please check this part number one more time?

I have a notebook Portege R111, model no. PPR11N-01KOK2.
In bios I've changed. The changes are applied to the 'End' button. With no ESC changes.

This 'End' button I do not find on the keyboard.

Can anyone tell me where the key is located on the keyboard?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Portege R111 - Where is 'END' button on keyboard

This Portege notebook isn’t known to me… it does not seem to be an European notebook model therefore I didn’t find many details about this unit… however, the keyboard button allocation depends on keyboard language layout.
On my first notebook’s keyboard the END button is located between the DEL and PGDN (page down) buttons.

The other notebook supports another keyboard layout and the END button is placed between POS1 and PGUP (page up) buttons.

Additionally I would recommend you to check the user manual too.
Mostly the different keyboard layouts are described in the user manuals

On the laptop keyboard, you can use Fn+F5 to switch the video output from the notebook screen to an externally connected one.
Is there a key press that you can use with a USB keyboard connected to the laptop that would have the same effect at Fn+F5?

We have a problem with our Portege R500's.
When the laptop is docked in the port replicator, we have an extended desktop on two monitors - a 22" screen on DVI and a 17" on VGA.
When the user takes their laptop away and uses it out of the port replicator, the display reverts to single display on the notebook screen so this means when they re-dock their laptop in the port replicator they have no display on either screen.

The work around is to open the laptop, press Fn+F5, close the laptop log on and set the display mode from saved schemes in the intel software.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Portege R500 - Can I use Fn+F5 on external keyboard?

You message described exactly how the display switch function works.
Everything is OK.

If you ask for FN + F5 function on external keyboard then I have to say that as far as I know this FN functionality is not available if the external keyboard does not support FN buttons.

But you could also check the Toshiba Mobile Extension (if you are using Win XP).
In Mobile Extension -> Display change service tab you could enable the ?Display change service? and could check how the display changes after docking and undocking the R500.

I'm having a problem very similar to the one described here:

My keyboard doesn't work, though the alt and shift keys are working at the password login screen. At the login screen, the F10 light is lit.

There are beeps when the computer is started up. The first time I counted 14 beeps. On subsequent reboots this was replaced with fast, repetitive beeping.

The pen seems to be working OK. When in Windows, the only key which works is the Context Menu key. Clicking on that activates the Function 10 light again. Then clicking on Shift switches the light to Function 11.

I also can't get into the bios, presumably because the keyboard fails and the Esc key isn't recognised.

Any suggestions what might be happening?

Answer:Portege 3500 - keyboard issue

It?s very strange issue.
It?s possible that there is a keyboard hardware fault.
The 14 beeps at the beginning are very strange and as far as I know it?s unusually on the notebook.
I would recommend to contact the Toshiba service.

The keyboard has stopped working. Seems that one key is jammed "on" - transmitting the "#" at all times.

Does this require a replacement keyboard or can it be fixed?

Where do I buy a replacement if required?

Answer:Faulty keyboard Portege 3500

Portege 3500 has a 3 year international warranty so if you take it to an Authorized Service Center , they can fix it for free.

You can search for the service centers from the link below

or you can contact the support center in your area and they can arrange a collection for the laptop to fix the problem

Can anybody give me some more detailed information about how to remove the keyboard of my R400. I want to insert the SIM card but I am worried about damaging my new laptop.

many thanks
G. Elmo

Answer:How to remove the keyboard of a Portege R400

Hi mate,

To add or remove a SIM card you must perform the following steps:

1. Your machine must be OFF!
2. Remove and disconnect any attached cable and device (USB, Parallel, etc.)
3. Remove the battery
4. Remove the keyboard cover by pulling it up where the grooves on each side of the cover are. You can also use a small flat-blade screwdriver or your fingernails to pull it up.
5. Remove the 2 screws which hold the keyboard down.
6. Pull the keyboard slow and gently up, you must pull it in your direction.
7. The SIM slot is on the right side on the mainboard, pull the slot gently to the left side to pull it up. It?s like removing a SIM card from a cellphone :)
8. Put the SIM card in the slot. The golden chip of the SIM must show on the top. (You must see the chip when installing the card)
9. Click the slot down and push it gently to the right side to lock it.
10. Install the keyboard by placing the clips under the palmrest.
11. Don?t forget the screws ;)
12. And the keyboard cover.
13. Done.

P.s.: Thanks for reading my text, if you want to send me some money, gold or champagner just ask for my address. ;)

Good luck and nice weekend

Do Toshiba or anyone else for that matter make a keyboard cover for the R700 series?

i want to preserve my laptop in as new condition, so wearing the buttons is something i'd like to avoid with one of those translucent rubberised covers i've seen for other laptops

Answer:Portege R700 - Keyboard Cover

Hi 1994F7PT,

As far as I know Toshiba doesn?t offer such keyboard covers. I have done a Google search for keyboard covers on Portege R700 and I found some offers but for US keyboard. Maybe you can find some keyboard covers for R700 and EU keyboard. Have also a look on eBay, there you can also get many notebook parts.

If you have found something you can post it here. I?m sure it?s interesting for other P700 owners! :)

I've got a Portege M300-101, and I'd love to find out if there are any instructions online for how to change the keyboard itself. Our unit shipped with, I think, a Belgian keyboard installed...and a US keyboard in the box. Are there instructions available for how to switch out the keyboards? Also, I'm guessing that it's a good idea to switch the keyboards before turning on the Notebook for the first time. Do you agree?

Dainis W. Michel

Answer:How to change the keyboard on Portege M300-101?

Hello Danis

Unfortunately there is no public document about that. You can try to do it alone but please don?t forget that on this way valid warranty will be canceled. Basically, the keyboard replacement is not much complicated and technicians need maybe 15 minutes to do that.

In my opinion you can make a risk and pay for replacement before you lose the valid warranty. This Portege is very expensive and by hardware damage it is very risky to be without warranty.

If you still think that you will do it alone write again.
