BIOS Update on a Portege 3490

Question: BIOS Update on a Portege 3490

i recently purchased two used portege 3490 CT Notebooks, both with BIOS version 1.60. I tried to upgrade to Version 1.90 with a USB-Floppy, but it wont accept the floppies. Theres no floppy access when i press a key after the bios update message.

Also booting from this USB floppy wont work. Is this a problem related to this specific USB floppy drive (it's a NEC)? Are there any other procedures to update the BIOS?

Preferred Solution: BIOS Update on a Portege 3490

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: BIOS Update on a Portege 3490

Hello Thomas

I am not sure but I assume that your unit has no USB legacy support and, as far as I know, you can do it using original Toshiba FDD. Check please your BIOS settings.

I am pretty sure that you will not be able to make BIOS update using your FDD.

I am trying to find RAM to upgrade my Portege 3490 from 128 to 256MB (max possible as I understand).
I looked at some sites on the internet but did not find RAM for this model.
Does anyone know of a shop / site to buy from ?
I am located in France-Paris.

Answer:Re: Looking for RAM for (old) Portege 3490

Take a look here:
Memory for Toshiba Portege 3490CT

The Portege 3490CT handles max 256MB RAM.
But 128MB are internal memory so you can use max a 128MB RAM module!!!

You have to use the MicroDIMM like mentioned on this page!

I just bought a 2nd hand portege 3490 and was wondering what the easiest way is to put an operating system on it can I just whack in a USB CD ROM and do it that way?

Answer:Portege 3490 installing an operating system?

normally you need a PCMCIA CD Rom because you have to boot the OS setup CD when you want to install a new OS!

But in my opinion it should also work with a USB Floppy, a Boot diskette and a USB CD Rom.

You have to include a runable CD Rom driver to the boot disk!

You can't boot from a USB CD Rom directly, try this.

Or you contact a Toshiba Service PArtner, they have the PCMCIA Drive. But then you have to pay for it!!!

I have installed win 2000. my display will not function above 800x600 pixels and hence the does not fill the entire screen. I have downloaded the toshiba win 2000 display driver, but unlike the other drivers, there appears to be no set up exec file with which to install it.

Please would someone addvise me what to do next

Answer:Portege 3490 - need Win 2000 display driver

As far as I know this unit was delivered with S3 Savage/IX 8MB graphic card.
I have found two display drivers for this unit. The latest version is from 02/13/03.
Well, I don?t understand why you are not able to install but you should check this recommended driver.

i have bought a secondhand portege laptop in US a few months ago. it was quite a bargain, though unfortunately it came without both floppy and cd drives, only with external network adaptor.

The problem is that now WinXP doesn't boot up due to some mess i have done with Acronis partitioning software- dos prompt just says:

Starting Acronis Loader...

Acronis Loader: No configuration file present.
Press <Enter> to reboot...

I suppose it wouldn't be much of a problem if i had floppy and/or cd drive. Though i would rather avoid buying one just for one-time OS installation. (normally i use lan connection to transfer files between my computers).

Anyway, i would greatly appreciate if you could tell me how to boot/install OS using network LAN connection (how to turn my stationary pc into a dhcp server and share cd-rom drive over the network, etc.). I alredy tried to search the internet for this, but there is surprisingly poor feedback on this subject, and toshiba as well didn't write anything about this in the manual...

best regards,

Answer:Portege 3490, Windows won't boot - how to reinstall?

Well I think somewhere there should be the info that it supports booting from LAN (PXE). But since this reqiures some heave stuff behind the LAN it might prove a bit difficult telling the whole story in the manual.

Anyway, the way I am familiar with this is that you can boot the machine from LAN (or rather install the machine from LAN) if you have a RIS (Remote Installation Server) available. This is not something that poeple generally have in their homes. What it takes is a Win2000 / XP or possibly Win2003 server with DHCP server active. You also need to prepare a special 'image' of the installation media (but there is a guide helping you with this in Win2000 server at least).
After that it should be pretty straightforward. Booting the machine from LAN, getting an IP and accepting to download the bootstrap from the server, logging on and then it really looks as if you are booting from a Windows Media.
So in short - to use this you need Win2000/XP/2003 server and the Windows media of choice. Some LAN cables and possibly a switch/hub.

If you can get hold of a PC Card (16 bit!) CD Rom and can make a bootable CD Rom then that might prove easier.

Theoratically you could also move your HDD to another PC, and there either
- install Windows on it

make 2 partitions and copy the Windows media to the second, make the first bootable with f.ex. DOS/Win9X, move it back and install Windows to the first partition when the disk is back in the 3490.

I bought a second hard Portege 3490 and the hard drive was broken. I was given a replacement 20gb drive made by Seagate (model 92011A). I have USB floppy and PCMCIA cdrom. I downloaded Hard disk setup tools/drivers from Seagate and have run the setup and set up all the partitions etc.

Whenever I try to install windows (XP Pro, 2000 or even 2000 Server), I insert the cd, it works through the first stage of loading drivers etc, then as soon as it gets to the part where it say's 'Now beginning setup', where it would normally do the first reboot, I get a blue screen error, it is usually 'Inaccessible_Boot_device' error but sometimes it will not say. I get the same problem with XP or 2000. The only cds I have are OEM verions of Windows 2000 or XP pro, not Toishiba specific.

Please can anyone let me know what this means? Is the hard drive not compatiable (my Toshiba dealer said it should be), or is there some problems with drivers etc?

Any help would be much appreciated, I've been stuck with this for ages and am getting desperate. The machine has no Warranty so the local dealer wants ?150 just to take a look. I will happily pay cash for a working solution.

Answer:Portege 3490 - New Hard drive (Seagate 20gig) - Cannot install OS

Hi Rhodri,

Check your BIOS settings to make sure that your bootable device list is correctly defined and in the right order. It may be that the system is trying to re-boot during the install but from the wrong device.

My hard drive failed recently on my portege 3490. I bought a replacement seagate 20gb hard drive. I installed Windows XP pro by connecting the drive (via adaptor) to my desktop and running the setup cd.

I thought I could then just fit the drive back into the Portege and be good to go. However when I turn on the system straight away asks me to insert system disk.

I have no floppy drive and my only cd is a usb drive and I cannot use this to boot.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can get this working?

I plugged the same drive into my other notebook (non Toshiba) and it boos straight away. Thanks for your help

Answer:Portege 3490, install new hard drive with windows xp ready loaded?

I have no real solution for you except that I can confirm that the ay you installed Windows and then moved the HDD is generally not a good idea.

In your case I think what is the primare problem is that the BIOS'es in the 2 different PC's look at the HDD in different ways. That means that even though both systems might say that it is a 20GB HDD they read it differently and therefore the 3490 gets only 'strange' data from the disk.

Even if it had been able to read the contents still it is not a good idea to do the installation this way because if the chipsets differ too much then Windows will not be able to boot due to wrong drivers.

My suggestion is to
In the 3490 format the HDD with FAT32.
Once again attach the 20GB to the other system.
Copy the contents of the i386 folder of the Windows media to the HDD.
Put the HDD back in the 3490.
Boot up on a DOS/Win9X diskette and enter the I386 directory. Start the installation from there.

A little bit of fiddling but should give you no problem with boot up.

Good luck

Has anyone tried this new update ?
I was put off by the wording on the disclaimer.
It seems that in order to cut down on constant fan use the price to pay will be a hotter computer.
Is that going to affect the computer life time ?
Also, as it is a "stand alone" update, is it possible to undo the changes and revert to a previous version if necessary ?
Finally, is the increased heat on the base of the unit going to make it uncomfortable to work with as a tablet ?
Thanks for feed back.

Answer:Portege M400. BIOS update V 1.8

Yes I have updated my m400 to version 1.8 and No it does not run that hot im currently suing speed fan to monitor the temp and its stable at 38 degrees - with BIOS set to cooling - battery optimised, its very quite now! thats what i wanted as the fan for me was just to loud for such a small laptop. I went from 1.4 straight to 1.8 didnt do 1.7.
I still find however the power saver dosent do much in terms of the fan speed, but at least we know there was an issue and they have identified it in the BIOS release.

I have a Portege Z835, with a battery problem: don't charge. The battery indicator says "3% connected and charging" but it don't charging the battery.

Some forums says that the solution is updating the Bios. I have a Bios update v.1.60 ready for install. When I try to install, we get the message "the battery power is not enough".

My power cord is always connected. If I disconnect the power cord, laptop is off.

Please, what can I do?

Answer:Portege Z835 - need help with BIOS update

To be honest I don?t think it is BIOS related issue. As far as I know battery should be charged even if the notebook is OFF so why BIOS update if battery cannot be charged at all.

For me it sounds like hardware related issue.

How old is your Portege?
Is warranty still valid?

Maybe you should contact Toshiba service and ask for help or even their opinion.

i have a portege m200 and because it doesn't have any device on it (fdd, dvd) i want to be able to boot from an sd-card. For that I need the newest bios version v1.70win, but to intall it ,it requires the Common Module. I have instaled it (there was no error, at least) but when I retry to do the update , a"missing common module" message appears. So I'm a little bit confused. I suppose that the best think to do is to erase any previous version of common module, and reintall it, but I have no ideea how should I do it.
can anyone give me clue, or maybe i'm on the wrong path!?

Answer:Portege M200 BIOS update

Hello Daniel

As far as I know it?s not necessary to install a Common Modules if you want to update the BIOS. Nevertheless normally you can find the Common Modules in ?Add and remove programs?. If you need a whole instruction ?how to make a BIOS update? you can find it on the Toshiba website.

Please go to ?Support & Downloads? then ?Knowledge Base?. There you can search for ?BIOS update?.

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

On the Toshiba EU driver page you can find only the win-based BIOS update version.
This means that BIOS can be updated from running system only and you need to run Windows OS in order to start the BIOS update procedure. Linux isn't supported in this case...

It seems that Vista OS was preinstalled on this notebook.
This means that you have installed the Win 7 system at your own hand.

The point is that BIOS update requires some essential Toshiba tools.
For example the Value Added Package is important software and should be preinstalled on the notebook.

You can download another version of the same bios-update here : PR10U

This file contains more information about performing the update, see the readme-file
you can either do a direct update within XP or make a bootable diskette or a bootable CD

If the "direct update" within XP won't work, you will need at least an USB-fdd-drive, most of them are recognized easily by the bios ( hold F12 during start-up and choose fdd )

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

Answer:Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

Possibly the error code is related to corrupt windows OS or to missing some necessary Toshiba tools.
Using Win XP the Common Modules should be installed.
Using Vista or Win 7 the VAP (value added packed) should be installed.

HI, I have Portege M700 - 116 with Vista Ultimate SP1. And I download a fresh BIOS (P005Bv160.exe) from [] version 1.60-WIN date 10/10/08. When I try to install it I have an error window said:

Unsupported product type is installed.
BIOS Package BIOS version: Ver.1.60
Current BIOS version: Ver.1.50

So my question is... WHATS WRONG?? What a product type? This BIOS update is OS independent and language independent (world wide), so i think many people with M700 will have the same problem. Is it some problems with previous version of BIOS? which I downloaded from the same site month ago. I dont understand, the BIOS installer for Windows was made to make the process easy, but it does not even work...

Answer:Portege M700 - 116 BIOS Update Error

I see you are using the Vista Ultimate.
I doubt this is an original preinstalled Vista version.

The error message: Unsupported product type is installed says that the product (software OS) which is preinstalled is not supported by BIOS. I think the error is related to the preinstalled Vista Ultimate. Possibly the BIOS cannot be updated running Vista Ultimate.

SO it would be very interesting to know if you can update the BIOS running Toshiba preinstalled OS.
Should check this!

Hi there,

- should I upgrade to 2.00WIN?
- I found this source for the biso upgrade 2.0 but there is no indication that this file is authentic TOSHIBA bios.
No checksums, no ssl certificate, nothing. Is it possible to get it in a secured / authenticated way?

Thanx for answers,

Answer:Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

First of all you should use and download the BIOS files only from Toshiba website.
The Portege A600-13Y PPA61E is a Toshiba European notebook model and all the drivers and BIOS can be found on the Toshiba driver page.

I don?t know why you ask for the checksums or ssl certificate? the Toshiba websites are safe?
but everyone who needs the drivers or BIOS can download it?

You should only ensure that you have chosen the right notebook model and that you have downloaded the right BIOS!

But why you want to update the BIOS?
If your notebook is running troublefree then a BIOS update is not important? I follow always this advice; never change a running system.

It's a WIN 7 64-bit Machine.

Current BIOS 1.70
Current EC-Version: 1.40

For this machine, a BIOS and EC update is out there.
So I downloaded the "BIOS220_EC160.exe" update and tried to process.

The first message during the update process is: "There is need to update BIOS and EC".
When I continue with "Execute the update", I receive the error message:
"Error: Preparing to update was failed
Given image file is not compatible with this cimputer"

There are no changes in the hardware of the machine. The only problem I see is that we are using McAfee Endpoint Encryption (V6.0.2.6) which might have some influence on updating the BIOS.

But I'm not sure.
Does anybody have an ides?

Answer:Portege R700 - BIOS-Update 2.20-WIN is not working

Is BIOS update important for you?
Do you have problems with notebook?

I?ve got three years old notebook and BIOS has not been updated?

However, as far as I know the VAP (value added package) needs to be up to date to get BIOS updated?. Also the firewalls and other security and antivirus software preinstalled on the system should be disabled before trying to update the BIOS.

Good morning.

Can someone tell me where can i find the changelog for BIOS update 4.50-WIN(ECB1.40)?
Thank you.

Answer:Portege R30-A Bios Update change log (4.50-WIN (ECB1.40)

Toshiba EU BIOS page does not provide any change log details.
But on Toshiba US driver page you can check such information.

The BIOS version seems to be the same:

I want to update the bios of my Portege R500 to the 1.6 version. It's a windows-update BIOS and when I launch it under Windows 7, I get the message:
[Error] BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsupported OS or service pack is installed.

I have to reinstall XP in order to update the Bios? File name is P0058v160.exe. Does anyone know if BIOS update works in Virtualisation mode? I would install Sunbox VM, install XP and run the BIOS update. But will it work?

Does anyone has an idea?

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - How to update BIOS on Windows 7?

Hi Roro,

Yes you have to install Windows XP to update the BIOS but my question is: Is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS update is always a little bit risky and should only be done to solve problems. If your computer runs properly I wouldn?t make this update.

I don?t know if this update is possible on Virtual XP but I wouldn?t try it. If the update fails you need a new ROM module or mainboard. I think the BIOS update isn?t designed for Virtualization mode?

Had a go at installing this, and all is fine apart from installing the Value Added Package - the main thing I want to get working is the function keys for screen brightness and connecting a TV.

I understand that upgrading the BIOS can help getting the VAP installed ( I get the ID ERR NOTINSTALLTVALZ message), I know that Toshiba are not directly supporting the A100 for Vista but is there a BIOS I can install that will work? I'm thinking there might be a similar machine that works in Vista or maybe just an A100 BIOS that will suffice?

Many thanks!

Answer:Vista on Portege A100 - Can I update the BIOS?

May I ask where did you found the Vista Value Added Package for Portege A100?
I didn?t find this Value Added Package on the Toshiba Europe site.

There are only 3 files for Vista. One of the files is BIOS v1.60-WIN which seems to be OS-independent.

Regarding the BIOS;
You should know that the BIOS update is always risky.
If you will use wrong BIOS version or wrong BIOS update procedure you can damage the motherboard!!!
?and as you probably know the motherboard is one of the expensive notebook parts!!!
It?s not worth to trying something which can damage the notebook. You know?

Good day, I have two questions about Portege 3410.

The first one: I cannot update BIOS (there is 1.50 in use, I want to update to 1.60). The instruction does not work: I connect Teac USB-drive on USB-port, switch USB-FDD emulation to Enable, switch notebook On with F12 pressed, the message "Ready to update BIOS..." appears, I presed key, but nothing happend. What's wrong?

The second one: I cannot install Windows XP on to notebook (it does not boot neither FDD-USB, nor External DVD-USB).
How can I install Windows?

Thank you.

Answer:Portege 3410 - How to update BIOS and install XP?

Just one question: Why do you want to update the BIOS? Is it really necessary?
I ask this because this update is always a little bit risky and you could damage the ROM module.
Anyway, have you tried to load default settings in BIOS before you start the update and install XP?

You can install XP without CD. Therefore you must copy the i386 folder on the HDD from another computer and some booting files for HDD? I think you should search a little bit with Google to find workaround for this. You should find enough! ;)

Greetings all,

Portege R830-138 Current BIOS 3.7

I am unable to update the BIOS to either 3.8 or the latest 3.9 version. Error: This Computer Is Not Supported.

VAP is installed and modules are working. A previous forum post suggested that it may be related to the recent Intel Management Interface firmware update which I had applied and am unable to uninstall or rollback.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Portege R830 - BIOS 3.9 Update Error

A friend of mine has updated the BIOS from 3.7 to 3.9 without any big problems.
It could be possible that you cannot update the BIOS because of the missing or disabled TVALZ services.

Go to Control panel -> Administrative Tools icon and click services.

Here you can check if the TVALZ service is available ? if its available, enable it and then try to update the BIOS.

If this will not work, you will need to recover the notebook using Recovery HDD or Recovery disk? The BIOS update should functions using the Toshiba factory settings

I recently picked up a Portege M200 and installed (via PXE - network install) Windows 7 on it. I would like to upgrade the BIOS as it's still at the original BIOS (1.1). I downloaded and extracted the pkg and tried to install via Windows but it says my OS isn't supported. I don't have an external CD drive or FDD - how can I update the BIOS? I tried to put it on a USB drive but there doesn't seem to be an option to boot from USB.

Answer:Portege M200 BIOS update running Windows 7?

Ok, I'm thinking I could use an SD card but I see it's not recognized by Windows 7 and when I put in a card, nothing happens...

Anyone know where I can find a driver for it? I do see there are 2 devices not recognized - one "Base System Device" and one "Unknown Device"...

And I see it doesn't recognize the video card either - just uses Standard VGA Graphics Adapter which seems to work fine...

how can I update my BIOS when using Ubuntu Linux?

The reason why I'd like to update my BIOS is that on the one hand Ubuntu
writes an error message during boot-up and recommends to upgrade it and on
the other hand I'm afraid that there is maybe a temperature problem, at least the
notebook becomes slower after working for a while.

The notebook operating temperature usually is between 45-64 degrees.
The fan turns on at 62 degrees and turns off at 52 degrees.

Temperature seems to be pretty normal I would say but I think its not normal that the
notebook becomes slower when operating above 50 degrees.

I already opened it, it seems to be all right with the cooling unit, no dirt e.g...

Maybe I just persuade myself I and the performance is completely normal for a PIII with

Thank you

Answer:Portege 2010 BIOS update / operating temperature

Dear Julio

I presume you know that Linux is not supported OS and designed BIOS update is created to be performed in running Windows OS. This nice Portege is known to me and I know very well that it is not the fastest notebook and it is designed for business purposes like working with Office, e-mail communication and every other everyday activity.

Because of that answer to your latest question can be: yes you persuade yourself.

I have an old M800-106 (model PPM81E-00K00JEN). It is good condition and has been reliable, and I don't want to scrap it. Unfortunately the Windows based BIOS update from Toshiba's website froze during it's operation, and now the laptop won't restart.

The cost of sending it to an authorised service provider to repair is significantly more than the cost of replacing the laptop, and I'd be charged even if they didn't fix it. I'm not saying it's expensive - if someone has skills and does some work they should be paid for it, but it's not what I want to spend money on for this laptop.

Environmentally it'd bad to just chuck the laptop away/take to the recycling centre.

I could strip the motherboard out and send that away to have the BIOS chip replaced or reprogrammed, but that would be time consuming and risk me damaging it.

I would like to attempt to flash the BIOS chip, using the crisis Phoenix tools that are available online, but so far haven't found a *.rom or *.wph file to use.

Where can I get the BIOS file - to be honest any version that suits this laptop would do, it doesn't need to be the most recent one.

Any helpful advice gratefully received.

I recently updated the BIOS on my z30c pt263e as per advice from the toshiba update application installed on my PC.

Since that update, my LAN (wireless) and bluetooth have been behaving abnormally, including:
Connecting to various wireless networks, but not being able to access the internet. In order to do so, I have to do a wireless troubleshoot in windows, which resets the wifi adapter, then it works againIf I switch between networks (say a wireless, to a hotspot wireless on my phone) it does the same thing. Will connect to the network, but not access the internet, necessitating the same resetBluetooth has started to work abnormally at the same time, including saying my bluetooth keyboard is paired, but it won't recognise any input from my keyboard.

I've since downloaded and reinstalled both the LAN and Bluetooth drivers from the Toshiba website. This has NOT fixed the problem.

If toshiba is not aware or not going to do anything about this, can someone please post a link to the previous BIOS version (which isn't available when I search on the EU support site) so I can at least verify if it was the BIOS update causing the problem

I have a Portege R500 model PPR50E with Vista Business pre-installed. I am wanting to move to Windows 7 and so, as a first step I want to update the BIOS from 1.5 to 1.6. I obtained the correct file from Toshiba (bios-20080325071859 containing P0058v160.exe), but when I try to run the application it fails with "This computer is not supported".
I have checked several times that I downloaded the file for the R500....

Can anyone help?

Answer:Cannot make BIOS update for Portege R500 (PPR50E)

That?s strange.
Did you change something on you installed Vista?

In different cases the BIOS cannot be updated because some essential tools like common modules for Win XP has not been installed.
If you are using vista you don?t need Common Modules but I recommend reinstalling VAP.
Then you should try to run BIOS update again.

Otherwise use the recovery disk and set the notebook back to factory settings.
After the notebook has been set to the same state like at the first day of purchase, you could run BIOS update.

I think in this case you must go to an ASP. I don?t see another solution for this problem because I think the ROM module must be reflashed or the completely mainboard must be replaced.

On the Toshiba website you can search for the nearest ASP: => Support & Downloads => Find an authorized service provider

And if you don?t find an ASP in your country just contact an ASP in another country. I?m sure that they will try to help you.

I'm having problems with my R500, so thought I would update the BIOS.

I am directed to download

This contains the file P0058v160.exe

Starting that process leads to:

"install2 has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Do these BIOSes have to be installed incrementally? My r500 is an early one and currently running v1.00.

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - Bios update installer crashes

If you want to update the BIOS then you have to download the BIOS package and have to unzip it firstly.
Then execute the exe stored in the folder.

I?m not sure why the error message appears but please ensure that the Common Modules are installed on your system.

If the error will still persists then this could be a problem with the installed Windows OS and not with the BIOS software.

Hello Forum,

i have exactly the same problem as described here, 2 years ago:

I need to update my BIOS, but i cant because the BIOS Updater tells me that Intel-TXT is enabled.
Unfortunatelly i cant disable it in my bios. Its just not selectable. The "cursor" just jumps over it.
I can only "Hide" it which doesnt help.
I have the same for the VT-d and VT-x setting in the BIOS. This is not selectable or changeable as well.

TPM isnt enabled though...
I installed the infineon suite and it tells me that i need to enable TPM in bios to use it. :-(

I have an very old Bios Version 3.1 and i read in the changelog that in V3.4 and 3.5 there were many TPM related changes....

Back then, a user named Paolo30 uploaded a file to which fixed this.
Unfortunatelly this file was deleted on

can someone please provide that file (or a later bios update) which fixes this?
Thanks in advance.

I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".

I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.

The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.

Any help would be great,

Answer:Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.

Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

My screen freezes, I can't move the cursor, the clock shows the same time.... so nothing happens...

Is that normal?
I don't think so, but it's my first BIOS-update, hence I'm not really familiar with it...

This is different not a common BIOS update process?
The BIOS update should not take a long time.

In your case is it possible that something went wrong during the flashing process and the ROM module has not been flashed properly.
I think you are in trouble and in my opinion only the ASP technician would be able to help you.

The BIOS ROM must be flashed again using an crisis procedure and this can be done only by an ASP technician.

Answer:Portege 3500: system32 file missing - BIOS update?

I can?t believe that and virus can damage the BIOS!!!
I think you have updated the BIOS with the wrong procedure!!!
Did you check the document how to update the BIOS?

Anyway, the system32 fault has nothing to do with BIOS and I don?t understand why you started the BIOS update.

The Portege 3500 does not support an internal drive and therefore if you want to install the OS you have to use a compatible external PC-card drive.
I assume you use such drive for booting.

If some error messages appear during the installation procedure, you should firstly format the whole HDD and delete all partitions and then try again to boot from the recovery CD!

Have you noticed some issues or hardware problems?

i tried to install a toshiba Z20t-c-11g

OS: Windows 10 LTSB
Driver: complete

I tried to install the new BIOS from the drivers page on
That BIOS sadly does not work ...? Why?

Anyway... the problem i had and i wanted to have fixed is:

Bitlocker encrypted my whole drive.
it starts correctly and displays the keyboard.
GPO: Keyboard Slates (or something like that) is activated.
BUT: Touchscreen does not work. That means.. i can see the keyboard but it does not work.
thats why i wanted to update my bios but it says it is not working on my computer... well thats frustrating...
why offer the bios update when it does not work at all... or is it some sort of windows 7 only? cant imagine that tbh.

i guess the only problem is the bios but i could be wrong (z20t-b works on same settings for example)

Any help would be pretty nice. Thanks ..

I have a Toshiba M400 and i was wondering how i could reset the bios password. I disabled the finger print scanner recently becuase i decided i dont need it anymore but it still asks for a bios password which i forgot. I used to just swipe my finger and it would let me boot up and all that gravey.

If you guys know how to reset the password. Either physically or through software that would be awesome.

Or if you guys know who is the bios manufacturer for Portege M400's I could probebly give them a call and ask my self.

I could send it in but I want to avoid that and leave it as a last option.

BTW this laptop was purchased in USA.

Answer:Reset BIOS password on Portege M400 - Bios Manufacturer?

You will be not able to remove the BIOS password yourself if you have forgotten it.
As far as I know the manufacture of the BIOS which was preinstalled on Port?g? M400 is......... Toshiba ;)

So you have to contact the authorized Toshiba service provider in your country and only these guys are able to remove the BIOS password which you have forgotten.

I just purchased an Epson 3490 scanner and I am having hard time making it work with my Dell Inspiron Pentium IV laptop, no problem connecting it to my e mac. It just won't talk to the pc. I have Windows xp and when i try to install the epson driver i am asked to "Disable Anti Virus Software" so I go to my McAffee Security Center and disable the Virus Scan, Privacy Service, Spam Killer, and i open the Personal Firewall Plus. Then when I finish the install and double click on the scanner icon on the desktop, the following error message shows up: " Can not properly communicate with the scanner. make sure the scanner is on, properly connected, and properly setup to scan. If using SCSI, restart your computer." in the meanwhile the scanner makes two abrupt scanning noises and its green light starts blinking, but nothing happens. Just wondering if anybody has had similar issues with that scanner, possible solutions? Thanks

Answer:Epson 3490 scanner issue

The twain drivers might be corrupted. If there arent any on the computer the Epson driver will install them, but if corrupted ones are already on the computer the installation wont overwrite them. The basic procedure is to uninstall the driver and do a search for twain and delete any files and folders it finds in the Windows folder only. Then reinstall.

This is more specific: The procedure is the same for all brands.

Hope someone might be able to help me on this one. Whenever I scan a document or photo in colour i get a very bold block of yellow from top to bottom. As the scanner warms up its not so noticable but there is still a yellow tinge to the scan. Anyone have any ideas, thanks.

Answer:Yellow scans on epson 3490

If the problem gets better as the scanner warms up then it suggests that the scanner may be faulty rather than a software problem.I would try it on another computer and, providing that you're installing it properly, if the same happens then that will confirm that it is.

I've never had problems using my Epson Perfection 3490 scanner in the year and a half I've owned it. However, I am now getting this pop-up message :

"Cannot properly communicate with the scanner. Make sure the scanner is on, properly connected, and properly set up to scan. If using a SCSI connection, restart your computer."

I am connected to my computer by the same USB port that I've always used with the scanner before and that port continues to work okay with my digital cameras, flash drivers and mp3 players. Several times since this problem appeared I have used Device Manager plus Windows Remove programs to remove Epson 3490 driver completely (and then I reinstalled the driver from the web site).

When I plug the scanner cable into the USB port I get that "ping" sound that usually means a device has connected with my computer.

When I left click on My Computer I see an icon representing my scanner. When I right click on that icon I can then select Properties. In Properties I see a box labeled Test Scanner. After I left click on that box I get a message saying "Your imaging device successfully completed the diagnostic test". And yet I still get the "Cannot properly communicate with the scanner" message !

I don't know what else to try. I hate being without use of my scanner. I am a newcomer to this forum and would appreciate any ideas anyone has.

I use a Dell computer, XP2

ABit IC7
Northwood 3.2GHz

When I switched to the above rig from a P3, my Epson 1200U stopped working, but since it still worked on another P3 rig I didn't worry.

Recently I got a Canon 350D, and its TWAIN drivers don't work -- no problem, I download photos thru a card reader.

But when I upgraded the other machine to a 2.4GHz Northwood on an ABit AI7, I got the Epson 3490. It won't run on either machine.

When I run epscndv.exe, it says:

"EPSON scan cannot be started."

Then it offers to run the Troubleshooting Assistant, and none of those branches produce any positive results.

I've uninstalled and re-installed enough to do it in my sleep, but that doesn't help.

I followed the advice here for removing all the old Twain drivers based on a lead from here:

Unfortunately, this doesn't change things at all.

I've also switched to different USB ports, esp. non-hubs, but that doesn't help. The scanner does show up in Device Manager with no sign of a problem.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I should try next?

Answer:Epson 3490 won't work nor other TWAIN devices

You don't say what you have uninstalled and re-installed, so will ask if you have removed and reinstalled the drivers. (Click the device in device manager, select the unit from the drop-down menu, click Properties, and then click 'remove'. After restart, windows will load fresh drivers)

A few months ago I installed a Ali M5273 PCI card to provide a USB2 capability on my Evesham 2200 which originally only came with USB1 ports. I have successfully connected devices (eg Pentax camera) through the new ports. However I have now tried, and failed, to connect an Epson 3490 scanner via one of the USB2 ports. It will successfully operate via the USB1 port - after first ignoring XP's advice to connect using one of the faster USB2 ports. Unfortunately I don't have any other USB2 devices to further check out the ports.Has anyone got any suggestions ?

Answer:Epson Scanner 3490 Photo and USB2 port

Hi, it is possible that you actually connected the scanner before installing the software - if so, this is probably your problem. Uninstall software, disconnect scanner, then re-install software and last of all re-connect scanner.Good luck - it is a great scanner, I have the same, in a usb2 port.Happy new year.

Hello everyone,

I upgraded the BIOS on my Z30-B-119 laptop, and it is much worst than the original BIOS so I would like to downgrade it.
There was no way to save the original BIOS when updating and the previous BIOS is not available on the website.

Do anyone have the original BIOS and knows how to extract it?

Or maybe someone knows how to contact Toshiba technical team directly? (Seeing what they implemented in new BIOS, I have no hopes they read this forum or care about user opinions.)

If you wonder why I want to downgrade and what is wrong with it, see below for explanation.

I was convinced that the new BIOS would fix the problem with the fan, which switched on way too early, but it turned out they made it much worst! Now the fan switches on at 42?. Before it was 50?, which was already a stupid choice of Toshiba engineers, providing that the temperature rating of this CPU is 105? so they could keep the laptop quiet at least up to 60?, especially that many people complain about the fan in this model. Instead, Toshiba did the opposite and lowered the temperature even more.

Seeing how senseless choices their engineers make, I will never buy another Toshiba and will not recommend anyone buying their products. But since I already made the mistake an bought a Toshiba laptop, I hope I will be able to downgrade the BIOS or contact them to ask for an update.

Let me know if you know how to do it.

Answer:How to downgrade BIOS on Portege Z30-B?

Running Ubuntu Linux on the M400 and it seems almost all BIOS versions prior 3.60 are broken because there are APIC quirk errors on the CPU. Maybe Microsoft could work around the broken APIC tables for a while but with Linux things are a bit cumbersome. Microsoft asked Toshiba for a BIOS update to deal with these issues and starting from 3.50 it seems to be fixed.

see here

Even in Linux no more APIC errors are seen. :-) But after updating to 3.60 BIOS the boot screen stays active and is preventing me to select an option for a multi boot entry (grub). When the OS is already starting the boot screen turns white at first and then gives finally control to the OS. Are others seeing this as well?

I am able to select something in my boot menu but it's more guessing because the boot screen is still on top. Very annoying this :-(

Another issue I have is that sometimes the system freezes for a couple of seconds and then goes on, nothing to be seen in logs when using Ubuntu or WXP tablet. So could be a bug in BIOS once again. Again looking for confirmation, are other experiencing this as well.

Did reflash 3.60 a couple of times but seeing this behaviour over and over again.

Although there seems to be some fan control in 3.60. It doesn't fire like a DC9 but still not as silent as the 1.80W or 2.10N BIOS versions were. Love to see these fan noise changes incorporated in 3.60 and later?

Answer:Portege M400 and 3.60 BIOS

Hi Robert

I know you will hate me but the fact is that Portege M400 has sticker near the keyboard and there is written something like ?Designed for Microsoft ??. With short words: Linux OS is not supported.

If you need some help with Linux on Toshiba notebooks please check

Issue about freezing is very strange and if you want to check it properly install recovery image without any additional software. In this case you will have ?factory settings? and clean preinstalled OS. If you will notice some exceptional issues you should contact authorized service partner and clarify this.

Good luck!

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... i do not have a floppy drive on my machine, only usb ports and a sd card slot. How can i upgrade the bios?

Answer:Portege 4000 bios upgrade

The easiest way is to create a dos boot cd-rom. There are several descriptions on the web. Google for it.
Add the extracted Toshiba bios files, ec29nobb.bin, chgbiosa.exe and chgfirma.exe to the CD-rom.

At first boot from the cd and run 'chgfirma ec29nobb.bin'.
Now the ECKBC-Firmware is written (don't power off during flash!!!)
Than boot again from cd and run 'chgbiosa'.
This flashes the Bios.
Both flash are necessary!

Here is how to extract the Toshiba bios file.
At first you have to extract the R211VOL2.exe file. Easiest way to do so is to use 'universal extractor' -- google for it.
After this you will get the file R211VOL2.IMA. This is a floppy image file.
You can extract the single files in the archiv using winimage (trial version should work).

Good luck!

Hi everybody :-)

am looking bios v. 1.50 for toshiba r700 model PT311E sold e.g in Poland.
On Toshiba download page is only new version 1.60 but I need previous version 1.50.

Can someone help me and send me via e-mail ? [email protected]

thanks a lot.

Answer:Portege R700 PT311E -I'm looking for Bios v1.50

Unfortunately, Toshiba European driver page provides just the newest BISO versions.
But I found also older BIOS versions on the Toshiba US driver page.
[Portege R700-S1320| rpn=PT311U&modelFilter=R700-S1320&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=1073768662]

But it?s for Portege R700-S1320 and the series PT310U / PT311U / PT314U
So possibly it?s the same BIOS which is designed for Portege R700 PT311E (E means European U means USA)

HI all, I've got a Toshiba *Z930-15X*, and I can't access the BIOS at all.

I want to downgrade to W7, and it used to be pretty easy before Windows 8.
I know I have to follow these steps , and I would gladly, except I can't access this *** BIOS. I tried all the F1-F12 keys.

Does someone has this model and can tell me exactly which keys work, or another way to access the BIOS?

Thanks in advance!

Check this:

Then you should be able to access the BIOS pressing F2 button!

I have a Toshiba R100 and am trying to upgrade the BIOS from 1.20 to 1.60. However, I just get "different ROM version" when I run the update.

The model number on the bottom is P2010 - is this slightly different from an R100? If so, where can I obtain a BIOS update?

Well, I have found the BIOS version 1.6 from 30.9.05 on the Toshiba driver page.
This version should works properly.
I assume you have tried to upgrade the BIOS with the win-version. Please check this document: IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

There you will find information how to upgrade the BIOS on the R100. You should use the trad-BIOS version.

Hi All,

I have a Toshiba Portege R830, running 32-bit Windows 7 (SP1) enterprise (for work).
I also boot into Linux Mint 14 64-bit, which I have installed on a portable USB HDD (outside work).

I recently bought a USB 3 HDD, but when I connect it to the USB 3 port on my R830, it only gives me USB 2 speeds (25 MB/s).

I checked with some diagnostic utilities (usbdeview, etc), which say that the drive is connected in USB 2.1 mode.

The drive reports itself as being USB 3, the cable is USB 3 (SuperSpeed), and the port I'm using on the R830 is 3.

I experience the same, whether I boot into windows or linux.

I updated all drivers on both OSs, to no avail.

next i tried to update the BIOS, but I keep getting the following error:
"An error occurred while preparing the update environment.
You have not given permission to execute the update."

For the record, this is the BIOS I'm going from, & to.
BIOS Version : Current Ver.2.80 --> Updated Ver.4.10
EC Version : Current Ver.1.10 --> Updated Ver.1.60

Does anyone know why I would not be getting USB 3 speeds (which, for my drive, are expected to be around 40 to 50 MB/s), or why all diagnostics are saying USB 2?

Does anyone know how to overcome the BIOS update issue?
(I've tried safe mode, disabling AV, disabling NX)

Answer:Portege R830 - USB 3 & BIOS updates

Is this USB driver installed?

Please try to install it and check USB speed again.
