Bios Update Procedure for Portege 7200CT

Question: Bios Update Procedure for Portege 7200CT

Is somebody out there have the proper procedure to update the bios of a Portege 7200CT without the docking station.

Toshiba has posted a procedure in its bulletin but it does not explain how to do the update without the docking station. As everybody knows that the Portege 7200CT has its floppy drive on the docking station and if we follow the Toshiba updating procedure we have to undock the laptop, so how can we proceed with the update if the update software calls for a floppy drive that is on default to drive A:

Hope somebody out there have something to share!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

ive got a toshiba portege 7200ct, whats the largest hard disk recognisable by the laptop??
As i get a insert system disk in drive when i put in a 40GB disk

Answer:What largest HDD can I use on Portege 7200ct?

The Portege 7200ct seems to be an older unit.
I've googled around and found some info about the delivered HDD.
It seems that the notebook was delivered with a 12GB HDD.

Arin, I think the 20GB HDD could work and in my opinion the BIOS will not recognize the bigger HDDs.
But "suck it and see".
You know; you could visit an computer store and test some HDDs. Maybe you're a lucky man and a bigger HDD will run (but I don't think)

Does anyone know how to get the Toshiba PCI FastEther LAN On Docker II drivers (of the PA3007U DVD Network Dock II) to work under WinXP?

The network card is a 3Com card but it's device id (VEN_10B7DEC_E000) isn't listed at the 3Com site.
The 3com card identifier does't detect the card altough their logo is on the dock.

Answer:Drivers for Portege 7200CT's PA3007U DVD network Dock II

As far as I know Toshiba wont support XP on this machine as it's too old. However the make of the Network card in the docker is

10/100 Ethernet 3COM 3C920 (3C905C-TX Compatible)

have a look on the 3COM site for drivers of the 3C905C. That may help.

I have an old T1090 eMachine that doesn't recognize the new larger hard drives. I purchased a 200 GB PATA (IDE) drive and it shows up as a 75 GB drive using GParted and under Windows Disk Management. I expected that it would only be recognized as 137 GB, but I can't explain why it only sees 75 GB. I suspect that the BIOS needs to be updated, but I've never done this before so I was looking for a procedure and ideas for trying to find the latest BIOS online. Thanks

I have asus p5gl-mx board. I am going to replace cpu with 2.8 ghz, P4. Previously cpu of 3.0 was installed. When I installed cpu of 2.8 ghz, there is no display. Cpu fan is running. Also board light is on. Ram is 256 mb ddr1. In board manual it says that this board supports cpu of 2.8 ghz. Shall I update bios? If yes, what is the procedure. I have downloaded bios update from website.

Pl help.

Answer:Bios update procedure

Since I was wanting to look into a procedure for asus motherboards, then hang in there and I'll see what I come up with.

I have one procedure, but that is for an asus netbook.

I've always updated the bios on any computer I've owned, since an up-to-date bios can avoid many problems.

Mobo manufacturers release a bios update at great cost to the manufacturer.

Following a bios update procedure correctly can be of great benefit.

Nowadays, a bios is more robust than 5-15 years ago and even if you goof, then you can reset the bios and recover from a disaster.

ASUS seems to have standardized their bios update procedure for their newer boards.

I will post back in a maximum of 24 hours.

Hi, I have a new Yoga 3 14 and I'm having some difficulty in understanding the update procedure for the BIOS. From the downloads (yoga-3-1470 downloads), I see the lattest one (version 34) but it's documented as Windows 8.1 64bit (and it's an exe file ). I have linux installed on this machine, so does it means I will never be able to upgrade BIOS? Or is there any other option? Version 34---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing the package
1. Windows
Run bacn34ww.exe (With admin authority)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 33---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing the package
1. DOS
Not support yet
2. Shell
Run Shell\flash.nsh
3. Windows
Run Windows\BACN33WW.exe (With admin authority)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I'm a user from the times when flashing the BIOS was not an operation executed from the operating system (much less through an installation process). So is there any alternative? Thank you.

At the recommendation of someone on these boards, I downloaded the latest bios for my Switch 10.  The only thing on the d/l page is the bios itself and a warning that it can screw up your computer.  Given this, one would think there would be detailed instructions, but no. So I did the Acer chat and made contact with Apu from the Quickee Mart (at least I think that was his name).  I should have asked for a slurpee, because he was no help at all.  He said to 'just' run the setup file in the bios (which is actually an .exe file). Can anyone point me to detailed instructions on how to do the bios update?  If I brick this thing, I'm still within the return period, but I'd rather avoid that.  Thanks.

unzip the file.connect the Switch10 to the AC charger and run the P0JAC_BIOS_V1.06_A4.exe from /BIOS/Win folder. nothing else, wait until it end the process without touching keyboard, touchpad or other buttons.

Good afternoon.

First post from me and it's as the title says, really.

The procedure on the support pages ([]) doesn't seem to cover my case. I've downloaded the bios update package twice now but, although Method 1 looks closest, there is there is no "BIOS" (Windows Batch File) file (BIOS.bat). in the package. I'm a bit stumped and unwilling to proceed without knowing what precisely to do, being only too aware of the consequences of getting it wrong!!

Any authoritative advice on what I need to do would be most welcome.

Hi, since trying to update the BIOS from within Windows by using the package supplied on the official download page always results in the +black screen issue+ described [here|], which is the *correct* procedure to follow to update the BIOS on this laptop?

I'm not beginner: with these laptops, here are the first and only 2 failed BIOS upgrades, out of over 100+ successful upgrades in my career!

Here I sketch the history with the my two Satellite Pro L40-15A (PSL4BE).

Laptop 1:
a. BIOS 1.60
b. Upgrade from within Windows *XP* to 5.50 _for Windows XP_
c. Program shuts down the PC right from start, with a still empty progress bar!
d. First boot into BIOS showing version 5.50 (!), but then: Dead (Black screen)
e. Taken to an ASP
f. After just 15 minutes and for as little as 35? it was fixed, and BIOS upgraded to 2.00
g. The ASP guy's explanation was it was my fault, because since the laptop came with Vista installed, I couldn't do a BIOS upgrade from within XP!
h. Sold the laptop with BIOS 2.00

Laptop 2:
a. BIOS 1.60
b. Upgrade from within Windows *Vista* to 2.00 _for Windows Vista_
c. Program shuts down the PC right from start, with a still empty progress bar!
d. But the laptop still boots up, and still with 1.60 BIOS.
e. Upgrade from within Windows *XP* to 5.50 _for Windows XP_ (I know, I was really looking for troubles, uh?)
f. First boot into BIOS ... Read more

Unfortunately buddy; there is no much to do.
It looks like the BIOS update procedure failed due to the blackout and the ROM module was not flashed correctly.
Hopefully the motherboard is not damage?.

In your case it?s strongly recommended to contact the local ASP.
The guys should be able to help you?
I?m not quite sure if you need a new mobo or just a new update of the ROM module?
But the ASP technician should know what must be done?

I had a working Vostro 3500 laptop and was doing maintenance to bring it up to date.
I downloaded and installed the recommended BIOS update for this laptop...

Dell Vostro 3500 System BIOS
3500A12.EXE | Windows/DOS (3 MB) BIOS Release date 7/21/2014 Last Updated 7/21/2014 Recommended

The BIOS update failed and left the computer with no working BIOS. F2 is dead. It will not boot.
I am pretty sure that there is a backup or primitive BIOS still in there, as when I start the machine with no battery and just AC power using the End key it continuously tries to read data from a 2GB flash drive. I assume that it would like to reload the BIOS from a file.

I know how to get the ROM contents from the above file using the /writeromfile parameter.

The big question is, what kind of file does the 3500 want to read, and what is the file name that it is looking for? Does the flash drive need to be bootable? Is this an AMI or Phoenix BIOS?

Can someone please help?

Answer:Vostro 3500 BIOS Update Failed - Recovery Procedure Needed

Here is how to recover from a failed BIOS flash update of a Vostro 3500 laptop...
1.  Download the Dell BIOS update .exe file to a USB flash drive.
2.  Run the .exe file with /writehdrfile parameter
3.  Run the .exe file with /writeromfile parameter
4.  Copy the .hdr file to winery50.hdr
5.  Remove the battery and AC power from the dead computer
6.  Insert the flash drive into the dead computer's USB port
7.  Hold down the End key and then connect the AC power
8.  Dead computer reads USB flash and asks if update should be done
9.  Allow the update to finish and then reboot.
10.  Computer is now working normally.

Two options at this point:
Have a shop un-solder the BIOS chip, flash it externally and re-solder it, or
Replace the mainboard.

I updated the BIOS from 1.2.0 to 1.4.0 for my New Inspiron 13 7000 (7378) in Windows 10 (64bit) using the executable available from Dell's website for this particular model:

This BIOS update (1.4.0) is quite recent and was released on January 6th, 2017. I followed all safety procedures (e.g. using AC power), and I did not see any error messages during the update. But when the computer finally rebooted the second time (it seemed to have first rebooted once to install the update), I got this error message:
Boot Guard verified FailedSystem will shutdownPress any key
The system wasn't even able to load the BIOS, indicating a critical error happened during the BIOS update. After spending some time searching for a solution to my bricked system (and panicking), I was able to recover the BIOS using this procedure on Dell's website for Convertible / Detachable with the external USB key method:

Now, everything works fine using the BIOS version 1.4.0. Not sure what went wrong with updating the BIOS from Windows 10.

Hopefully this will make the BIOS update process a bit easier.  The following steps address two common questions (Failed BIOS Update and the Windows message about improperly configured Secure Boot).  NOTE: After a successful BIOS update you will want to check additional items in the BIOS not directly covered in the steps below (e.g. Intel Virtualization.... the update disabled this for me.) U430 BIOS Update Procedure: 1. Download the BIOS update from Lenovo (it will be in .exe format... the program will install new BIOS).2. Shut down computer.3. Use the "Novo" button (tiny button on left side near Power button).4. Enter BIOS setup.5. Under "Security" select "Secure Boot" and choose "DISABLED" (this allows the BIOS update program to work properly).6. Under "Exit" select "Exit Saving Changes".7. Computer will reboot. Log in to Windows (it will have a message stating "Secure Boot not configured properly" this is expected).8. Run the Lenovo BIOS program (this will reboot the computer and you should see an update status screen). Once finished, the computer will reboot. Log in to Windows (the "Secure Boot" message will still be there) and then turn the computer OFF (I've found that turning off the computer from the log-in screen doesn't completely shut down the computer. If that's the case then hold the Power button until it does shut down).9. Use the "Novo" button and enter BIOS setup.10. Under "Security" make sure "Secure Boot" is ENABLED.11. Also under "Secur... I have a Portege Z835, with a battery problem: don't charge. The battery indicator says "3% connected and charging" but it don't charging the battery.

Some forums says that the solution is updating the Bios. I have a Bios update v.1.60 ready for install. When I try to install, we get the message "the battery power is not enough".

My power cord is always connected. If I disconnect the power cord, laptop is off.

Please, what can I do?

Answer:Portege Z835 - need help with BIOS update

To be honest I don?t think it is BIOS related issue. As far as I know battery should be charged even if the notebook is OFF so why BIOS update if battery cannot be charged at all.

For me it sounds like hardware related issue.

How old is your Portege?
Is warranty still valid?

Maybe you should contact Toshiba service and ask for help or even their opinion.

You can download another version of the same bios-update here : PR10U

This file contains more information about performing the update, see the readme-file
you can either do a direct update within XP or make a bootable diskette or a bootable CD

If the "direct update" within XP won't work, you will need at least an USB-fdd-drive, most of them are recognized easily by the bios ( hold F12 during start-up and choose fdd )

What does the BIOS update for Portege Z830 (PT224 / PT225 / PT22L), version 1.80 do?

The description just says +"This BIOS Update adds increased functionality to your system."+, and I haven't been able to find anything more on Toshiba's website. The update was released 2013-05-24.

I presume European Portege Z810 must be similar to US Z830/Z835 (PT224x/PT225x) so I?ve checked US support page for BIOS update and here is info about BIOS updates:

+Version 1.80 - 2013-04-25+
+Optimized a BIOS setting to improve hibernation resume reliability.+

+Version 1.70 - 2012-09-12+
+Implemented the Intel specification to improve stability - updated MEBX to
+EC/KBC V1.30: Improved standby stability.+
+EC/KBC V1.30: Modified the power supply error detection method.+

+Version 1.50 - 2012-02-13+
+Added a boot LOGO sequence for ZAT (GPS) models.+
+Improved: Control of TPM on Intel TXT enabled systems.+
+Implemented a fix for an issue where the BIOS password cannot be entered when configured as follows: 1. Wired USB keyboard is connected to the port replicator. Wireless USB mouse is connected to a computer USB port. 3. Computer is docked to the port replicator.+
+Implemented a fix for an issue where the BIOS password can't be entered with some USB keyboards.+

+Version 1.40 - 2011-11-15+
+Improved: Control of the TPM on Intel TXT enabled systems.+

+Version 1.30 - 2011-10-27+
+Initial production BIOS for these models.+

Hi there,
When I look for an update to the BIOS in my M400 at the Nordics version of Toshibas homepage - here is what I find;
On the nordics toshiba website they have the 1.50 version available for download, while the US version website I can download the newer 1.60 version. As my M400 is a Danish version I am a little unsure as to if it's ok to update my BIOS to v1.60 now that the nordics toshiba website don't have that BIOS version available.

Any thoughts and views about going ahead and installing the version 1.60 on my DK-version M400 is very welcomed.

Answer:Portege M400 - BIOS update to 1.60

Please don?t compare European and US notebooks models and don?t make update mix. If you have European notebook please use just the stuff available on Toshiba Europe download page.

If you don?t have problems with your unit and if operating system runs stabile, don?t do anything. It is just my advice.

I run Windows 8.1, but the BIOS upgrade should function the same as for WIN 7.
Toshiba must have forgotten to add a setup.exe or something.

I haven't seen a release note, but I'm a big fan of fresh software.

It seems that Vista OS was preinstalled on this notebook.
This means that you have installed the Win 7 system at your own hand.

The point is that BIOS update requires some essential Toshiba tools.
For example the Value Added Package is important software and should be preinstalled on the notebook.

Is VAP installed?

Has anyone tried this new update ?
I was put off by the wording on the disclaimer.
It seems that in order to cut down on constant fan use the price to pay will be a hotter computer.
Is that going to affect the computer life time ?
Also, as it is a "stand alone" update, is it possible to undo the changes and revert to a previous version if necessary ?
Finally, is the increased heat on the base of the unit going to make it uncomfortable to work with as a tablet ?
Thanks for feed back.

Answer:Portege M400. BIOS update V 1.8

Yes I have updated my m400 to version 1.8 and No it does not run that hot im currently suing speed fan to monitor the temp and its stable at 38 degrees - with BIOS set to cooling - battery optimised, its very quite now! thats what i wanted as the fan for me was just to loud for such a small laptop. I went from 1.4 straight to 1.8 didnt do 1.7.
I still find however the power saver dosent do much in terms of the fan speed, but at least we know there was an issue and they have identified it in the BIOS release.

I have a Portege 3440CT with bios version 1.50.

This version does not support large HDD so I thought I'd update the BIOS. (don't know if version 1.60 does either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the bios-update-program on win2000, it says "Initial error", anyone know what's causing this?

BIOS is downloaded from Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have tried the updater on win98, and also in DOS and it says "this utility not available on v86 mode!"

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

Ideas, anyone?

Answer:Bios update on Portege 3440CT.

Sorry CyB but I really do not understand you. If you check Toshiba support page you will find two BIOS updates. Both of them must be done using FDD. So now I am asking myself why you try to do it under running operating system. Sorry but it is really ridiculous.

Toshiba provide two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with FDD) and WIN (can be done under running WXP or now Vista). For old notebook models there is no WIN version.

Is there any way to place the BIOS file on a small hard drive, and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and obtain FDD. You can get it for few bucks. It is really not expensive.

My current bios version is 1.6, the latest is 3.0
When trying to update the bios, I get an APPCRASH from INSTALL2.EXE
exception code c000005

I tried to run it in safe mode, but this doe not help

Thanks for help

Answer:Portege A600: cannot update to bios 3.0

The istall.exe should not crash and you should not update the BIOS in safe mode!
The Windows should be booted up and should run correctly!

Here is a Toshiba FAQ How to update BIOS:

Possibly the error code is related to corrupt windows OS or to missing some necessary Toshiba tools.
Using Win XP the Common Modules should be installed.
Using Vista or Win 7 the VAP (value added packed) should be installed.

I have been wrestling with this device for a while now and I seem to be progressively making the situation worse.

My current issue is that I can no longer access the BIOS after changing a setting in the BIOS that related to USB emulation (or something like that). I was in the process of trying to make the device boot from a USB and pretty much twiddling with every setting to see what would work.

This one didn't. And now the device no longer responds to F2. It's like it is ignoring the keyboard. Doh!

Is there some way to roll back or re-flash the BIOS? Or another way to access it? I tried an external keyboard, to no avail.

How did I get here?

Well ... I was given this device to put back to factory condition and I could not find an obvious option that would do this, other than the Toshiba Maintenance Utility which looked hopeful. It offered to erase the partition (which at the time seemed fair enough) - BUT THAT"S all it did - so the machine just repeatedly boots, displays "Please insert system disk" and then reboots.

OK, I'm an idiot - but it does seem silly for Toshiba to offer an option that instantly bricks the machine?

Anyway, I've moved on from that problem to one that is significantly more dire. Not being able to access the BIOS means I don't have any options - unless one of you wonderful people can help me discover one.

I have since discovered that the next setting I was going to adjust - the Secure Boot setting - may have solved... Read more

i have a portege m200 and because it doesn't have any device on it (fdd, dvd) i want to be able to boot from an sd-card. For that I need the newest bios version v1.70win, but to intall it ,it requires the Common Module. I have instaled it (there was no error, at least) but when I retry to do the update , a"missing common module" message appears. So I'm a little bit confused. I suppose that the best think to do is to erase any previous version of common module, and reintall it, but I have no ideea how should I do it.
can anyone give me clue, or maybe i'm on the wrong path!?

Answer:Portege M200 BIOS update

Hello Daniel

As far as I know it?s not necessary to install a Common Modules if you want to update the BIOS. Nevertheless normally you can find the Common Modules in ?Add and remove programs?. If you need a whole instruction ?how to make a BIOS update? you can find it on the Toshiba website.

Please go to ?Support & Downloads? then ?Knowledge Base?. There you can search for ?BIOS update?.

Greetings all,

Portege R830-138 Current BIOS 3.7

I am unable to update the BIOS to either 3.8 or the latest 3.9 version. Error: This Computer Is Not Supported.

VAP is installed and modules are working. A previous forum post suggested that it may be related to the recent Intel Management Interface firmware update which I had applied and am unable to uninstall or rollback.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Portege R830 - BIOS 3.9 Update Error

A friend of mine has updated the BIOS from 3.7 to 3.9 without any big problems.
It could be possible that you cannot update the BIOS because of the missing or disabled TVALZ services.

Go to Control panel -> Administrative Tools icon and click services.

Here you can check if the TVALZ service is available ? if its available, enable it and then try to update the BIOS.

If this will not work, you will need to recover the notebook using Recovery HDD or Recovery disk? The BIOS update should functions using the Toshiba factory settings

Had a go at installing this, and all is fine apart from installing the Value Added Package - the main thing I want to get working is the function keys for screen brightness and connecting a TV.

I understand that upgrading the BIOS can help getting the VAP installed ( I get the ID ERR NOTINSTALLTVALZ message), I know that Toshiba are not directly supporting the A100 for Vista but is there a BIOS I can install that will work? I'm thinking there might be a similar machine that works in Vista or maybe just an A100 BIOS that will suffice?

Many thanks!

Answer:Vista on Portege A100 - Can I update the BIOS?

May I ask where did you found the Vista Value Added Package for Portege A100?
I didn?t find this Value Added Package on the Toshiba Europe site.

There are only 3 files for Vista. One of the files is BIOS v1.60-WIN which seems to be OS-independent.

Regarding the BIOS;
You should know that the BIOS update is always risky.
If you will use wrong BIOS version or wrong BIOS update procedure you can damage the motherboard!!!
?and as you probably know the motherboard is one of the expensive notebook parts!!!
It?s not worth to trying something which can damage the notebook. You know?

Good day, I have two questions about Portege 3410.

The first one: I cannot update BIOS (there is 1.50 in use, I want to update to 1.60). The instruction does not work: I connect Teac USB-drive on USB-port, switch USB-FDD emulation to Enable, switch notebook On with F12 pressed, the message "Ready to update BIOS..." appears, I presed key, but nothing happend. What's wrong?

The second one: I cannot install Windows XP on to notebook (it does not boot neither FDD-USB, nor External DVD-USB).
How can I install Windows?

Thank you.

Answer:Portege 3410 - How to update BIOS and install XP?

Just one question: Why do you want to update the BIOS? Is it really necessary?
I ask this because this update is always a little bit risky and you could damage the ROM module.
Anyway, have you tried to load default settings in BIOS before you start the update and install XP?

You can install XP without CD. Therefore you must copy the i386 folder on the HDD from another computer and some booting files for HDD? I think you should search a little bit with Google to find workaround for this. You should find enough! ;)

So I downloaded the "BIOS220_EC160.exe" update and tried to process.

The first message during the update process is: "There is need to update BIOS and EC".
When I continue with "Execute the update", I receive the error message:
"Error: Preparing to update was failed
Given image file is not compatible with this cimputer"

There are no changes in the hardware of the machine. The only problem I see is that we are using McAfee Endpoint Encryption (V6.0.2.6) which might have some influence on updating the BIOS.

But I'm not sure.
Does anybody have an ides?

Is BIOS update important for you?
Do you have problems with notebook?

I?ve got three years old notebook and BIOS has not been updated?

However, as far as I know the VAP (value added package) needs to be up to date to get BIOS updated?. Also the firewalls and other security and antivirus software preinstalled on the system should be disabled before trying to update the BIOS.

Hi there,

My Portege A600-13Y BIOS is version 1.50:

- should I upgrade to 2.00WIN?
- I found this source for the biso upgrade 2.0 but there is no indication that this file is authentic TOSHIBA bios.
No checksums, no ssl certificate, nothing. Is it possible to get it in a secured / authenticated way?

Thanx for answers,

Answer:Re: Portege A600-13Y: BIOS update 1.50 to 2.00-WIN - How risky it is?

First of all you should use and download the BIOS files only from Toshiba website.
The Portege A600-13Y PPA61E is a Toshiba European notebook model and all the drivers and BIOS can be found on the Toshiba driver page.

I don?t know why you ask for the checksums or ssl certificate? the Toshiba websites are safe?
but everyone who needs the drivers or BIOS can download it?

You should only ensure that you have chosen the right notebook model and that you have downloaded the right BIOS!

But why you want to update the BIOS?
If your notebook is running troublefree then a BIOS update is not important? I follow always this advice; never change a running system.

HI, I have Portege M700 - 116 with Vista Ultimate SP1. And I download a fresh BIOS (P005Bv160.exe) from [] version 1.60-WIN date 10/10/08. When I try to install it I have an error window said:

Unsupported product type is installed.
BIOS Package BIOS version: Ver.1.60
Current BIOS version: Ver.1.50

So my question is... WHATS WRONG?? What a product type? This BIOS update is OS independent and language independent (world wide), so i think many people with M700 will have the same problem. Is it some problems with previous version of BIOS? which I downloaded from the same site month ago. I dont understand, the BIOS installer for Windows was made to make the process easy, but it does not even work...

Answer:Portege M700 - 116 BIOS Update Error

I see you are using the Vista Ultimate.
I doubt this is an original preinstalled Vista version.

The error message: Unsupported product type is installed says that the product (software OS) which is preinstalled is not supported by BIOS. I think the error is related to the preinstalled Vista Ultimate. Possibly the BIOS cannot be updated running Vista Ultimate.

SO it would be very interesting to know if you can update the BIOS running Toshiba preinstalled OS.
Should check this!

I have to reinstall XP in order to update the Bios? File name is P0058v160.exe. Does anyone know if BIOS update works in Virtualisation mode? I would install Sunbox VM, install XP and run the BIOS update. But will it work?

Does anyone has an idea?

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - How to update BIOS on Windows 7?

Hi Roro,

Yes you have to install Windows XP to update the BIOS but my question is: Is this update necessary or just for fun? BIOS update is always a little bit risky and should only be done to solve problems. If your computer runs properly I wouldn?t make this update.

I don?t know if this update is possible on Virtual XP but I wouldn?t try it. If the update fails you need a new ROM module or mainboard. I think the BIOS update isn?t designed for Virtualization mode?

I have checked several times that I downloaded the file for the R500....

Answer:Cannot make BIOS update for Portege R500 (PPR50E)

That?s strange.
Did you change something on you installed Vista?

In different cases the BIOS cannot be updated because some essential tools like common modules for Win XP has not been installed.
If you are using vista you don?t need Common Modules but I recommend reinstalling VAP.
Then you should try to run BIOS update again.

Otherwise use the recovery disk and set the notebook back to factory settings.
After the notebook has been set to the same state like at the first day of purchase, you could run BIOS update.

Hello Forum,

i have exactly the same problem as described here, 2 years ago:

I need to update my BIOS, but i cant because the BIOS Updater tells me that Intel-TXT is enabled.
Unfortunatelly i cant disable it in my bios. Its just not selectable. The "cursor" just jumps over it.
I can only "Hide" it which doesnt help.
I have the same for the VT-d and VT-x setting in the BIOS. This is not selectable or changeable as well.

TPM isnt enabled though...
I installed the infineon suite and it tells me that i need to enable TPM in bios to use it. :-(

I have an very old Bios Version 3.1 and i read in the changelog that in V3.4 and 3.5 there were many TPM related changes....

Back then, a user named Paolo30 uploaded a file to which fixed this.
Unfortunatelly this file was deleted on

can someone please provide that file (or a later bios update) which fixes this?

If you want to update the BIOS then you have to download the BIOS package and have to unzip it firstly.
Then execute the exe stored in the folder.

I?m not sure why the error message appears but please ensure that the Common Modules are installed on your system.

If the error will still persists then this could be a problem with the installed Windows OS and not with the BIOS software.

I have an old M800-106 (model PPM81E-00K00JEN). It is good condition and has been reliable, and I don't want to scrap it. Unfortunately the Windows based BIOS update from Toshiba's website froze during it's operation, and now the laptop won't restart.

The cost of sending it to an authorised service provider to repair is significantly more than the cost of replacing the laptop, and I'd be charged even if they didn't fix it. I'm not saying it's expensive - if someone has skills and does some work they should be paid for it, but it's not what I want to spend money on for this laptop.

Environmentally it'd bad to just chuck the laptop away/take to the recycling centre.

I could strip the motherboard out and send that away to have the BIOS chip replaced or reprogrammed, but that would be time consuming and risk me damaging it.

I would like to attempt to flash the BIOS chip, using the crisis Phoenix tools that are available online, but so far haven't found a *.rom or *.wph file to use.

Where can I get the BIOS file - to be honest any version that suits this laptop would do, it doesn't need to be the most recent one.

Any helpful advice gratefully received.

I think in this case you must go to an ASP. I don?t see another solution for this problem because I think the ROM module must be reflashed or the completely mainboard must be replaced.

On the Toshiba website you can search for the nearest ASP: => Support & Downloads => Find an authorized service provider

And if you don?t find an ASP in your country just contact an ASP in another country. I?m sure that they will try to help you.

In order to do so, I have to do a wireless troubleshoot in windows, which resets the wifi adapter, then it works againIf I switch between networks (say a wireless, to a hotspot wireless on my phone) it does the same thing. Will connect to the network, but not access the internet, necessitating the same resetBluetooth has started to work abnormally at the same time, including saying my bluetooth keyboard is paired, but it won't recognise any input from my keyboard.

I've since downloaded and reinstalled both the LAN and Bluetooth drivers from the Toshiba website. This has NOT fixed the problem.

If toshiba is not aware or not going to do anything about this, can someone please post a link to the previous BIOS version (which isn't available when I search on the EU support site) so I can at least verify if it was the BIOS update causing the problem

Hi everyone,

I have got a Portege 3500 PIII-M 1.33GHz which has been infected by a virus. I have been trying to reinstall Windows Xp, but the file SYSTEM32 is now missing or has been corrupted.

I downloaded the BIOS driver and tried to install it through an external CD drive, but it did not work out.
Could you please help me at all?
I am quite concerned about the situation

Look forward to hearing from you

Answer:Portege 3500: system32 file missing - BIOS update?

I can?t believe that and virus can damage the BIOS!!!
I think you have updated the BIOS with the wrong procedure!!!
Did you check the document how to update the BIOS?

Anyway, the system32 fault has nothing to do with BIOS and I don?t understand why you started the BIOS update.

The Portege 3500 does not support an internal drive and therefore if you want to install the OS you have to use a compatible external PC-card drive.
I assume you use such drive for booting.

If some error messages appear during the installation procedure, you should firstly format the whole HDD and delete all partitions and then try again to boot from the recovery CD!

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem.
I downloaded the BIOS Update from the Toshiba Hompage.

The update started correctly, but at the point "Flash new BIOS" at "Processing block 26 of 33" the update stucks!
I'm waiting since almost 2 hours, but nothing happens.
My screen freezes, I can't move the cursor, the clock shows the same time.... so nothing happens...

Is that normal?
I don't think so, but it's my first BIOS-update, hence I'm not really familiar with it...

Does anyone has an idea?

It would be great to get some help!

Answer:Portege M800 - BIOS Update stucks - Windows 7 32bit

This is different not a common BIOS update process?
The BIOS update should not take a long time.

In your case is it possible that something went wrong during the flashing process and the ROM module has not been flashed properly.
I think you are in trouble and in my opinion only the ASP technician would be able to help you.

The BIOS ROM must be flashed again using an crisis procedure and this can be done only by an ASP technician.

I tried updating Portege R700 Bios with Toshiba Service Station and by downloading the bios exe file.
Both claim "This computer is not supported", but the bios file downloaded is correct.

What to do?

Answer:Portege R700 Bios update issue - This computer is not supported

Go to Toshiba European driver page and download the BIOS package manually.
Unzip the BIOS and try to execute the exe file once again?

But why you need BIOS update? Did you notice some problems with the notebook?
BIOS update is not necessary if you don?t have any problems.

The latest BIOS upgrade (Ver.6.70) for my Portege Z930 12H laptop comes with the warning:

"If you are using the Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption, please temporarily suspend (or turn off) the BitLocker Drive Encryption before updating the BIOS."

Does this same warning apply to McAfee Endpoint Encryption, which is used on my laptop and which I can *not* suspend or turn off? Or can I apply the BIOS upgrade safely?

Answer:Portege Z930-12H - BIOS update and McAfee Endpoint Encryption?

As far as I know the Bitlocker isn?t related to McAfee Antivirus software and both security tools are not connected to each other. Bitlocker is a Microsoft Windows tool and McAfee is a 3rd party software preinstall on the unit.

I found an nice how to doc about the BIOS update.

I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".

I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.

The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.

Any help would be great,

Answer:Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.

Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

I realised that my machine is old but I thought I'd ask the question anyway.

The disc crashed on my R100 and I've just bought another one (waiting for it to arrive). Only then did I realise that even though I've got the recovery discs I need a way to read them into the machine. Being an R100 my DVD drive is an external unit manufactured by LG (Model GCC 5240P) with a CardBus adapter.

I heard somewhere that some machines will "boot up" because a basic driver for the DVD drive is held elsewhere not on the hard drive. I'm not sure if this is the case for the R100 and if not how do I boot the machine??
Anyway I'm looking for some help on how I might be able to get my machine restarted with XP.

Any help would be gratefully received. By the way I'm not a computer professional, so if anyone out there does reply, KISS (Keep It Straight and Simple) would be a good maxim to use.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Recovery procedure for a Portege R100

I believe you need a special Bootable Floppy Disk with the CD Drivers on it. You can download it from here:

Connect the External CD Drive and External FDD Drive to the R100
Insert the bootable Floppy Disk and the Recovery Disc
Turn on the R100 and boot from the FDD and select the ODD in the list. It should start the Recovery Process.

i tried to install a toshiba Z20t-c-11g

OS: Windows 10 LTSB
Driver: complete

I tried to install the new BIOS from the drivers page on
That BIOS sadly does not work ...? Why?

Anyway... the problem i had and i wanted to have fixed is:

Bitlocker encrypted my whole drive.
it starts correctly and displays the keyboard.
GPO: Keyboard Slates (or something like that) is activated.
BUT: Touchscreen does not work. That means.. i can see the keyboard but it does not work.
thats why i wanted to update my bios but it says it is not working on my computer... well thats frustrating...
why offer the bios update when it does not work at all... or is it some sort of windows 7 only? cant imagine that tbh.

i guess the only problem is the bios but i could be wrong (z20t-b works on same settings for example)

Any help would be pretty nice. Thanks ..

Portege R830/PT321E: Bios Update stops with "An error occurred while preparing the update environment..."

Following message seems at first

BIOS Version: Current Ver. 3.40 -> Updated Ver. 3.70
EC Version: Current Ver. 1.30 -> Updated Ver. 1.50
Bios and EC should be updated

During the BIOS update seems following message:

+An error occurred while preparing the update environment. You have not given permission to execute the update.+

My settings:
- BitLocker is switched off.
- No connection to a docking station
- Windows 7 is installed
- Boot mode is on? I guess it means:
"Closes all open programs, shut down windows, and then turns off your computer."

Hello, I was given the laptop minus the hard drive, I istalled a suitable HDD, but the CD-ROM external drive, it is the correct one, is not recognised.

I followed these instructions:

All goes well, but after step 8 I get the prompt A : \>_ with the last symbol flashing I entered C then U but I get the message: bad command.

Could anyone help?
Thanks Richard

Answer:Portege 3500 - Hangs on step 8 during the recovery procedure

Hello Richard

Have you created bootable floppy disc using downloadable exe file?
Step 8 means you must start your notebook using floppy disc drive as first bootable device. To force notebook to use external FDD as first bootable device you can use U button on keyboard at start up.

When notebook starts and you press U button the disc in connected FDD will start to read inserted disc. Is that exactly how it happened?

Have a 7200CT currently running under Toshiba flavour Win98SE. Want to abandon this in favour of a standard (i.e. not Toshiba issue) copy of NT4. Any body know of any problems with this? Which filing system should be adopted in view of the HDD size (12Gb)?

Answer:{Advice Offered} - Toshiba 7200CT and NT4

RE: Will non-OEM version of NT4 work?
No idea. You could try a dual boot to find out. This will only work if the 12 Gig HD's active partition is FAT16. If you have one C: drive of 12 Gigs big, then it is FAT32 and you can not have a dual boot system with NT4 until your resize your drive and change File systeams (this is a pretty easy thing to do with Partition Magic).

RE: What file system to use:
If you are going NT4, then you should be using NTFS. There is no native support for FAT32, so to use the entire 12 Gigs, you need to use NTFS or have 6 2 Gig FAt16 partitions.

You can have a look at my website mentioned in my .SIG to find out how to dual boot your machine, if you so desire.

I have a Toshiba M400 and i was wondering how i could reset the bios password. I disabled the finger print scanner recently becuase i decided i dont need it anymore but it still asks for a bios password which i forgot. I used to just swipe my finger and it would let me boot up and all that gravey.

If you guys know how to reset the password. Either physically or through software that would be awesome.

Or if you guys know who is the bios manufacturer for Portege M400's I could probebly give them a call and ask my self.

I could send it in but I want to avoid that and leave it as a last option.

BTW this laptop was purchased in USA.

Answer:Reset BIOS password on Portege M400 - Bios Manufacturer?

You will be not able to remove the BIOS password yourself if you have forgotten it.
As far as I know the manufacture of the BIOS which was preinstalled on Port?g? M400 is......... Toshiba ;)

So you have to contact the authorized Toshiba service provider in your country and only these guys are able to remove the BIOS password which you have forgotten.

Toshiba Satellite L40-14B (Catalog Number: PSL4CE-004005G3)

I downgraded my Laptop to WinXP (from Vista) and I wanted to update BIOS with Toshiba version for XP (5.50). I did all right but even 2 seconds after clicking the .bat file to launch the process, Windows has interfered with a critical message and restart my computer.

It restarted, (***) entered "BIOS ROM Utility V1.16 Crisis Recovery", a progress bar indicated that old bios was erased; after that another progress bar indicating the flash process stopped after 2 seconds (1cm); ?flash error? message appeared; the ?utility? tried again to erase BIOS (first progress bar again); ?erase error? message has appeared. ?The POST will continue? or something like that is displayed, and all is blocked and disabled. After a long time of useless praying I removed the battery from my laptop and go ahead again (power on). And everything is happening identical (again and again) from the mark above (***).

It was somewhat strange, especially since, after rebooting I could access BIOS. Without hard disk the laptop shut down in 3 seconds.

I analyzed the content of hard drive and discovered a new file, named T20.BIN (1M - probably with the BIOS image) in C:\.

I think that when laptop is powered on he does not find the BIOS, it search for BIOS image file in the root of active partition on hard drive, load it (T20.BIN), starts "BIOS ROM Utility V1.16 Crisis Recovery" and you know the rest ?

Answer:Satellite L40 - Rewrite procedure for BIOS

Hi lonutS,

That?s a pretty long story but I think the case is clear: Something went wrong due BIOS update and now the ROM module needs to be reflashed. Normally the BIOS will be updated in Windows and not after a restart or something else so probably the ROM module is erased now but no new version was flashed.

> Any idea? (Not ASP. I mean good ideas.)
Does anyone has L40 Maintenance manual or only BIOS Rewrite Procedures?
Why not ASP? That?s the best idea and may I ask you what kind of answer do you expect? Here it?s only an user to user forum so nobody here can give you the technical manual or BIOS recovery tool especially for this notebook. These utilities only have an ASP and Toshiba itself.

Here in forum are similar threads about BIOS recovery so maybe you should read them but don?t forget that everything happens on your own risk! If you don?t have success, I think the only option is contacting an ASP. ;)

Answer:Satellite L650 - Procedure for updating the BIOS

Hi buddy,

Generally speaking if you don?t have any problems with your notebook, there is no reason for a BIOS update. So if everything runs properly, be satisfied and happy! :)

Otherwise BIOS update is always a little bit risky, yes but before you start the update, make sure that you are logged in Administrator and close all running programs (also firewall, antivirus, etc.)

If you start the downloaded exe-file, the update will start.

I am new to a ThinkPad with fingerprint reader, but not to ThinkPads. Running Windows 7 64-bit. In Windows I installed the Lenovo Touch Fingerprint Software. I enrolled my fingerprints. Windows: It works well with Windows. Instead of logging in to Windows with password I can use the fingerprint. Next to deleting fingerprint data, only option I have in Settings is "Enable pre-boot authentication". Seems when I have this enabled, that windows will automatically log-in (not asking for password or fingerprint) if I used fingerprint to boot-up the computer during boot-time (enabled via BIOS). Boot/BIOS: I am a bit unsure how exactly this is configured via the BIOS. Only when I enable "boot password required" I will be asked to scan my fingerprint (or type the password). I assume it's meant this way. If boot password is disabled, I am not asked for the fingerprint at all. With boot password enabled, and that's strange to me, it would first ask me to scan the fingerprint and when I did so successfully, it will still require the password as well. I first scan my fingerprint, it gets a green checkmark (= success), then it shows the password icon, and next to it a hand which is crossed out, then a moment later I need to enter the password. Is it meant this way? Or should it be password OR fingerprint? Summary of settings (by choice): In Lenovo Touch Fingerprint Software i disabled "pre-boot authetication". This way I still need to ... I've failed with bios update which I had taken the bios file from toshiba's official support page. I'm sure that I had chosen the right bios file. But something is wrong and my laptop is bricked, now.

I'm trying to recover the bios with Phoenix Crisis Recovery. I've tried 2-3 variety of the Crisis Recovery.

I have old, stable bios backup, so I'm trying to recover with this old bios file. I've tried Win+B, FN+B, Win+F, FN+F, Fn+Esc, U key combination for crisis recovery.
By the way, I'm using 1GB FAT formated usb drive for this purpose. The machine beeps every time, and I'm waiting for 10 mins or more after the beeps.

I've put the bios file to usb disk with a lot of names "bios.wph", ".fd", "bios.fd". Also I've tried to use usb floppy, but the bios file is 2MB, so I couldn't do that.

I've also tried insyde recovery solution. I don't know the right file name for the recovery.
I've looked the bios file with a hex editor, but I haven't find the file name (for example bios.fd or something)

Please *don't* suggest for sending laptop to service solution. I have to fix this in *1-2 days* and the service is so far from me and they work slow. If I send to service, I won't take the laptop for 2 weeks.

What can I do, What is the working procedure? If toshiba allow us to update bios, they must support for recovering it, too. ASP is not a solution for everytime.

*Any help* will be appreciated.

Best Regards.

I need to recover bios because it is infected with virus. I found procedure description on another site. It says: 1) unpack crysis disk2) put bios firmware file as bios.wph there.3) create crisis disk;4) use fn+esc keys combination at startup to recover bios.  Crisis disk containt exe files. I am asking whether it is necessary to put exe files on recovery usb flash? Because they might be infected too(infection of wph file is more difficult i think, correct me if i'm wrong) and i need to use another virus free laptop in that case to create flash. Another reason why i am asking this quiestion is: Bios recovery procedure for motherboards for example requires only bios firmware file on usb flash.

Hi im new here and this is my first post. I am a MCP, MCTS, MCSA, N+, and A+.

This is not for work its my personal PC.

I have been having a problem with Windows 8.1 Pro for a few months now. Every time windows, java, drivers, or anything updates and the PC is restarted, after login, it acts as though its a fresh install. When everything is loaded, the start window is blank and so is the desktop. When I press the windows key, to go to desktop, there is an error. I can not remember exactly what it says but next time I update i will edit it in. It basically says that, "The desktop cannot be found." along with it listing the directory for it.

So I searched for months and have not found a fix or a lot of people with the same thing. I did however get a clue about RPC (remote procedure call). I figured out a quick fix for this but every time there is a new update its back to the beginning. These are the steps I take

press windows key to view desktop
close all errors
Services tab
Find RPC (remote procedure call) witch will be stopped every time.
Start the service (Witch appears to do nothing)
Details tap
Find explorer.exe and end the process
Click File
Run New Task

After all of that the desktop starts to load and everything is back to normal except the appearance settings. I then restart the PC and as long as there is not other update in that time, Everything is just the way its suppose to be, appearance and everything.

I tried just restarti... Read more
