Laptop monitor goes black after connection external vga monitor

Question: Laptop monitor goes black after connection external vga monitor

Hey,

I have a Qosmio G50-10H, running windows 7 32-bit. After connecting an external monitor the internal laptop screen goes almost black. It's possible to see some elements on screen, but it's to dark grey to work on. It does not respond much to color or brightness adjustment (black to really dark grey). The main trouble is when disconnection the external monitor the internal monitor still is dark grey and still isn't responding much to adjustments. It's so dark on the brigthest adjustments that it is impossible to work on. I have downloaded latest driver for support, but still same problem.

Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Laptop monitor goes black after connection external vga monitor

It is somehow strange.
Can you switch between LCD and external display using FN+F5 key combination?
If you can switch to LCD only is everything OK again?

so I have this hdmi cable that plugs into the DVI on my external monitor. I did get the screen to show up just on the external monitor and that's it.  Now, when I boot up my lap top I get black screen on both monitors.  Uh oh. I've unpugged the  monitor, batter, all that stuff. I think it's possible I clicked on don't display external monitor or something, but not it's not displaying anywhere. I have an idea pad of some sorts w/ windows 8.  I don't think it's 8.1 thanks-Hayes

Hi I have lenovo ideapad y y500 with 650m sli, which originally had windows 8 but then I updated to windows 8.1 and used the fix for GPU bios provided by this forum. The issue is that both my external and laptop monitors go black when I connect external monitor to my laptop with vga cable.I have had this issue since I updated nvidia driver back in the middle of january. (befor the update it worked fine I had no issues). I only used external monitor occasionally so I decided to wait for nvidia to fix the problem (rolling back to previous nvidia driver version did not help). Well now after 3 new version the problem persists. I tried using  the hot key on my keyboard to change between 4 different monitor-laptop setups (only laptop, only monitor, resize..) and it did not help.  I tried recording my laptop screen when I pluged in the external monitor and the video is normal (it isn't black). I then opend nvidia control panel to see if it recognises external monitor and recorded the screen. My external monitor (samsung) was recognised.Click for video on youtubeIn between black flashes i pluged in/out the external monitor.Translation for "zaslon na prenosniku" : laptop's screen. So any idea how to resolve this problem ? Thanks in advance.

Hi,  I'm trying to setup dual monitor for my lenovo T61P laptop. I want to use one external monitor which is connected to my Thinkpad docking station and the laptop lcd monitor. I'm using windows vista x64. Does any one else have it setup this way? When I connect the laptop to the docking station, only the external  monitor displays data. I've tried going into desktop settings to extend my desktop but only one monitor is present. Please help. I've spent an entire two days playing with BIOS settings, searching forums....

Solved!

Answer:T61P - dual monitor with docking station (laptop lcd monitor) and one external monitor

This started working fine when I installed the video drivers below: Display (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M / Quadro FX 570M) driver for Windows Vista 64-bit - ThinkPadhttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67939  It looks like I had installed the wrong video drivers (32-bit)  previously. Now fn+F7 works fine and I am able to extend my desktop to mulple monitors (dual-monitor).

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Answer:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

I have spent hours trying to work this out to no avail. I have a T60P with a  ATI Mobility FIREGL V5250 video card External screen is Viewsonic VG2230WM What i am trying to do is make the viewsonic my MAIN screen and then the laptop screen as #2 the extended screen. I currently have it working in reverse however the options in the display settings are greyed out to enable me to make the viewsonic the main screen Any help would be much appreciated, I found quite a few posts about this but no solutions. Marc

Answer:T60P external monitor problem, setup external monitor as main and laptop screen as # 2 Vista 32bit

This isnt a complete solution but it helps... you can just drag your taskbar onto the external monitor screen.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

I have the new Acer Aspire laptop and a TV which I use as a monitor. They have worked together very happily some time now. But yesterday I had to do a forced shutdown when the start button would not work and the TV screen shrank in size and there were error messages. When I rebooted, the TV monitor stayed black and a computer screen came alive for about 10 seconds as it was rebooting, then went black. I disconnected the TV from the computer and started her up and the computer screen behaved itself.
Even if I set all of the display parameters to indicate only one screen (the computer screen), if the TV monitor is connected to the computer, I end up with two black screens.
I have tried many display duplicate and extension.
No new software installed.
There is one clue. I disconnect the TV monitor from the computer, boot up, choose duplicates to display. Then I connect the TV monitor to the computer. What happens, for about one second, is that both screens light up.
What is going on? Help please.

Answer:Both laptop screen and external monitor go black

If you are still getting the black screens when starting up there is a useful shortcut you can try. Press the windows key + P. This will give you some options to try different combinations of TV monitor and/or screen.

It sounds like you might need a graphics driver update or roll back to a previous one it is has recently changed.

Hello,
My HP pavillion xh365 laptop has developed a problem with the screen going black. This happens after running for a few minutes to several hours. The screen goes completly black with no faint outlines showing. I have tried running the onboard diognostics, but get the same trouble. The only way to recover the screen is to reboot. I have the same problem whether the laptop is running on the built in display or is conneceted to an external display. Both screens go black at the same time. When the screen goes black, I can hear some changes in the pc. The sounds I normally hear are just the hardrive and the fans, but when the screen goes black, I hear some changes in the pitch of one of the sounds.

I have not recently made any changes to the system.

What do you suppose is causing the black screen?

Thanks to all, Jerry.

Answer:black screen on laptop & external monitor

Hardware could be failing; my advice is to use a program like SIW or if your BIOS supports it to check the temperature that your laptop is running at. The increase in noise could be related to the pc unable to vent properly. The excess heat would cause problems. Also, have you tried a system restore or rolling back your video driver? :major

I have tried so many things to fix this but nothing works. I can't contact HP, because I have no money and my warranty is up. Every time I turn on my laptop I hear the noise and see the lights on but the screen is pitch black. I tried shining a flashlight to the screen to check if I see the picture at all and the screen is just black.

be sure the monitor settings for your graphics are not set to an external monitor. go to control panel, clicking Display Settings to check this out and toggle between screen 1 and 2. click the icon that corresponds to the monitor that you want to designate as the primary display, and then select the 'This is my main monitor' check box.

if not, the use of the external monitor which works ok confirms the issue.

its not the video chip or motherboard. could be the lcd screen itself or if it is the inverter. most of the times it is the inverter that is the problem and can be fixed, you just have to get the correct inverter that supplies the right amount of voltage and you will be back in business.

sometimes its the backlight (light bulb) that went, which is more difficult imo and more time consuming. shine a flashlight on the lcd , if you see a faint image then in most cases it is the backlight that needs to be replaced. If you don't see an image even when shining the flashlight then it is most likely the inverter. if that helps.

if deciding to look at repairs for the inverter, enter ... Read more

Hello Friends,
I have a problem because of a problem. I got bit by the endless loop boot up because of the last MS update.

I am now waiting for MS to send me an XP CD, ya 6-7 days w/o my machine!

Now the problem: I decided it would be a good idea to hook up my laptop to my cordless KB and Mouse, went without a hitch. The problem came when I decided to hook my 23" monitor to the laptop also.

Yes, now I have no monitor working. I get black screens on both machines, I do get a pointer but it is useless. The monitor is an acer and the LT is a HP DV9205. I have tried the fn+F4 along all the F combinations.

Now a bit more information: I am able to ctrl alt del and pull up the processes running, it shows no apps running. I am also able to open in safe mode and can see both screen in safe mode.

If I uninstall the Nivdia driver for the acer and reboot without the monitor hooked up the LT I still have only the black screen on the LP.

Help please. I am now working from a netbook, and it is killing me

On the driver page we have this:
Intel HD Graphics 530 Driver View detailsFile Name: Intel-HD-Graphics-530-Driver_28VH9_WIN_21.20.16.4727_A03.EXE
If the GPU is HD Graphics 630. Why is the driver 530???
Also in "View details" we have:
Enhancements:- Update Intel 15.46 graphic driver branch for RedStone2 OS
Intel 15.46 supports OpenGL 4.5 and this driver doesn't: Intel-HD-Graphics-530-Driver_28VH9_WIN_21.20.16.4727_A03.EXE
Then we have the following problem when I connect and external monitor to the HDMI port:
The window of Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 when dragged and snapped to the corner of the external monitor turns black but only sometimes. This rendering problem appears to be a driver problem according to Microsoft.

This needs to be addressed by Dell/Intel or NVIDIA as there appear to be many complaints.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I am talking about Windows 10. And this is what I see:

Hi,

I am new to this forum and I am having some trouble with my laptop. My laptop screen was cracked, and my future brother in law removed the screen completely, and then connected an external monitor. Everything was working fine until he performed a full system restore because of a corrupted file. Now the screen goes black on start up. In safe mode a pop up states that the installation cannot be completed in safe mode and automatically restarts, putting me back at square one. Is this issue fixable or should I just throw it away?

I have an acer laptop/now desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium if it helps.

Answer:External monitor connected to laptop goes black after system restore

I don't have much time but this will help others. When does the display go black? After the standard BIOS post information when it goes to Windows? When do you get the error message?

I assume this may be a refresh rate problem but there's not enough info to go on.

DV4 2170US Laptop Goes through boot sequence, but screeen never comes on, or even flickers. It can't be the video crd, since an evternal HDMI monitor works just fine. I already tried removing the battery and cord, and draining residual power. The laptop crashed during a Microsoft update on Feb 10, 2012, and I am trying to resurrect it for an online course, since the specs are pretty respectable. Do I need to use my USB Flash Restore drive, reset the system (I backed everything up while connected to the external screen) and see if that fixes it?Is it just a video driver I am missing? Is the cable delivering data to the screen bad?The screen looks like it did when I first bought it, no chips, cracks or scratches, so I doubt it is physically damaged, but... HELP???!!!??

My xps 13 9350 laptop screen is just blank but when I hook up an external monitor it shows everything. I went to my display settings and it doesn't even recognize a second display, for some reason it thinks the external monitor is the main screen. When I click "detect" it doesn't detect a second display.
I have booted in safe mode and everything works on the actual laptop but otherwise it only boots with a an external display.
Any help would be appreciated.

The touchscreen on the laptop is completely black.  The computer is turning on and the backlight to the keyboard is functioning, as well as the fan.  At times I can get a series of 8 beeps that can be heard.  I referenced this and understand that code indicates LCD failure.  I connected the laptop to an external monitor via HDMI cable and it is black as well.  I did remove the battery for a few minutes and then reinstalled it.  I also check the LCD cable connection, unplugged it, and plugged it back in.  No change.  What could be causing this problem?
Thank you for any help!

Hello,

I have a Lenovo Z710 laptop. It has keyboard like THIS. On F9 key it you can turn on/off laptop screen. Do you know what Im talking about? Remember this for later. Also, I always use external 24" Dell monitor, 99% of time.

I have the following problem. Every day, once or twice, out of nowhere my laptop screen goes black and my external monitor gets disconnected. I dont know the exact reason, but I think the issue might be with nVidia graphic card. I have 2 GPUs, as you can see in my specs info.

But Im not sure. Every time I run a game with nVidia (Modern Combat 5), in just a matter of minutes, the game crashes. So that's why I always use integrated intel graphics. But the issues still happens. That's why Im not sure that nvidia card is the problem.

Now that I described my problem to you, I would appreciate if someone can tell howcould I diagnose the problem??

Regards

I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM Laptop and I have an issue that is probably not huge, but it is very annoying. I connect my laptop to an external monitor, pretty much all of the time. I use this monitor (a Dell E177fp) as my main display in an extended desktop form. I like using the external monitor as my main display, and it is very convenient to have two monitors, but unfortunately this same issue persists, and has been this way ever since I bought my computer: whenever I have my laptop plugged into the monitor and I reboot, my computer boots up, showing the Compaq BIOS screen on both screens as well as the starting windows screen on both screens. However, once it boots up to the Welcome screen, it shows the logon on my Main display, but then the monitor is disconnected. I then have to login, wait for Windows to load all its stuff up, then press the Windows key + P until it shows the "Extend" option. Then I have to go into the Screen Resolution settings and reset the external monitor as my main display. Now it's not like this is a huge problem, it's just that I have to do this EVERY time I reboot. So my question is, is there any way to make Windows 7 remember that the external monitor is the main display? It's just inconvenient to have to deal with this upon every reboot. Thanks in advance.

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

Last year, I ordered and installed a Lenovo 19" Flat-Panel monitor (and driver) for my T-61p ThinkPad.  Recently, as a contractor working on an IBM project, I was provided with an R61 ThinkPad and HP 1740 monitor.  The monitor driver that came with the R61 allows me to extend my desktop displays across the R61 screen plus the monitor screen as one contiguous desktop spread across the 2 screens.  The driver that came with my Lenovo 19" monitor only gives me the option of duplicating my T61 desktop screen on my external monitor.  Can I extract/copy the driver from the R61 and install it on the T61?  Or download a free version of the "extended desktop" driver from Lenovo, IBM, or somewhere else?  I've searched the Lenovo site but found no references to driver downloads.

After the recent Windows 10 update, my wife's laptop no longer displays on the external monitor. All was well before the update.

I am comfortable that Windows sees the monitor because clicking on Display Settings shows two displays. If I unplug the HDMI cable, only one display is shown.

I have confirmed that the monitor works by trying it with another laptop. I have also changed the HDMI cable between the laptop and the external monitor.

Device manager reports that I have the latest display driver installed.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Windows 10 laptop. I connect it to an external monitor and use hdmi cable. My external monitor is my main monitor. I use the laptop monitor as the secondary monitor. I extend the display.

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

Answer:Desktop Icons Rearranged To Laptop Monitor From External Monitor

If you booted up without the external connected, it likely switched the laptop screen to now be the main screen. Just go back in and double check which one is set to main.
I run dual screens on my laptop but leave the laptop screen as main. My external is a smaller screen than my laptops 17 inch screen. It's a portable 15 inch USB screen.
I on occasion boot up my laptop without the external connected. Having the laptop screen as the main screen helps in this situation.
I don't put any ICONS on my desktop, its just my personal preference. I launch my every day Apps/programs from my taskbar.

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Dell Laptop external monitor = OK, attached monitor = BSOD

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen.
My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080?
My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200.

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

I have it hooked up to an external monitor, but I am unable to use it to display the laptop screen without changing the display settings via the laptop. Is there some command I can use to set the external monitor to display the laptop screen? Or do I need to replace the laptop screen?

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

Hi folks. New here.  Sorry if this has  been asked/answered, but I searched and didn't find it. My company got me this great new W500 laptop.  Came with minidock and external monitor. I have the monitor plugged into the minidock, and have it to the right of the laptop. Laptop is monitor #2, and external LCD display is #2.  works great.  UNTIL.... If I lock the console, and fold the laptop monitor closed (to have it power off - i.e. at lunch break, etc...) When I come back, the external monitor is now monitor #1 (has the windows task bar, Start menu, etc...) and it thinks the laptop monitor is monitor #2.  I can't figure out how to switch them back without rebooting.  It's very frustrating, b/c the 'sides' are swapped too.  Meaning the external LCD display which is physically to the right, is "on the left" as far as Windows is concerned, so if I drag the mouse off-screen to the right of the external display, it arrives on the left side of the laptop (which is physically to the left). Is there a simple solution to this?  I can't live with having to reboot every time I lock my monitor. I'm using Windows XP if that makes a difference.

Answer:Dual Monitor issue. Lock console & external monitor becomes monitor #1

more information... It's the 'advanced minidock' with keys. The monitor is connected via the DVI port, not the plain old VGA port.

Hi,

A disclaimer before I proceed. Im not the best with computers or computer terms.
I have a Samsung laptop (not sure of the model), and the screen broke months ago. Since then I've been using an external monitor without any issues until today. When I start up my laptop I can never see anything displayed on the external monitor until the log in screen. The monitor will always go into hibernation mode until the log in screen.

However, today it's taking longer to start up and I cant see what's going on. At first I thought windows was performing a disk scan but i waited over an hour! So that must not be the issue. I want to find a way to display what is happening on the external monitor if possible. I have been endlessly searching all day online for help. I would really appreciate any help/advice.

Thank you!

I have an external monitor hooked up via HDMI to my laptop. Recently it has started briefly turning black for a few seconds. The power light is still on, but there is no sound from the speakers which are connected through HDMI. Before this happens sometimes there is a pink horizontal line that appears on the screen for one second. My laptop screen does not go black, and this does not happen if the game is being run on the laptop screen whether or not the external monitor is connected. This only happens when playing a demanding game or program (such as Furmark) but not videos. I may have switched the refresh rate from 59p to 60p before those but changing it back has not fixed this problem. I have also tried updating the graphics card driver which did not work.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Whenever I run an external monitor (only) on the laptop's HDMI connector or a VGA adapter on the USB-C connector, the screen regularly goes black for a few seconds and the speaker beeps. Sometimes, not often, the resolution of the external screen will have changed when the monitor comes back from black.
I just updated the BIOS, chipset, and video drivers from the Dell download site.
The external monitor is an ASUS VW266H.

Greetings, I've searched for answers to this but can't find any so far.

I have a Tecra A9.

My problem: I have an external monitor plugged in. Sometimes when I arrive at work in the morning and open the lid of my laptop the laptop monitor and external monitor are black. I can restore the laptop monitor by using the shortcut key <Ctrl><Alt><F3> but no matter what I do I can't get the external monitor to display anything till I reboot. I have tried powering it off then on, unplugging then replugging the data cable.

I leave my machine on all the time, don't switch it off over night. I have the option to shut down/hibernate/suspend on closing of lid disabled.
I have disabled all the power management for the monitor so it doesn't get switched off by windows.

I'm running Vista 32 bit Business Ultimate and have an the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family. I have checked the Toshiba website for latest Vista Video driver and have the latest installed. In checking at the Intel website I'm informed that I have a custom configuration and am advised to go to the vendor's site for latest driver.

This problem only happens occasionally and I haven't managed to pin it down to anything yet except that it happens sometime through the night perhaps after I use Remote Desktop Connection to access the machine from remote.

I'm thinking I could have a video card hardware problem but of course I can't prove anything.

Does anyone have ideas as to how I an te... Read more

Qosmio G30 (PQG32E) running Vista Home Premium, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 driver, 7.15.10.9813

I cannot get a picture on an external monitor (tried two different monitors). Specifically:

'Windows Mobility Center' will recognise that a monitor is connected
'NVIDIA Control Panel - Change Display Configuration' will recognise the external monitor ('Select the displays you would like to use' shows 'Laptop Display + Sony SDM-HS73', which is the plugged-in ext monitor)
but no matter what configuration I try, using Fn+F5 or Change Display Configuration, I cannot get anything but a (backlit) black screen on the external monitor.

The monitor is receiving a video signal correctly: when turned off under a laptop-only Fn+F5 setting, it shows a 'no signal' warning, but when turned on again I just get black.

I have tried changing resolution settings for the external monitor. They exactly match the monitor's native resolution. Still nothing.
Tried 'Clone' mode and 'Dual View' mode.
Tried various different orders of switching the laptop and monitor on, plugging and unplugging, etc.

Have installed latest driver from this Toshiba site (as above). Have NOT tried installing any other driver from the NVIDIA site, since it warns to use Toshiba's - but is that worth a try?

The laptop's own screen and all other aspects of video are fine.

It has worked ok in the past (I think before I did the upgrade to Vista, when it was still on XP).

What port did you use?
The external monitor (analog) port or the D-video out port?

As far as I know if you have used the external monitor (analog) port then you should choose the ?Analog display? in the nVidia -> current display

Then you could use the button FN+F5 to switch between the both displays.

For my laptops/netbooks to toggle display between laptop, monitor or neither I need to press the Function and the F5 key.

Hi there

I have a Toshiba P200 17.1" , LCD has gone blackish,
You can see the backlight in the background.
It will come on sometimes.

I have checked the LCD lead with a Ohm meter and it seems to be ok , not sure what the the problem is.
When I connect it to a external monitor it works ok , the backlight is coming on.

I suspect it is the LCD , but I would like to check for sure before I part with my hard earned cash .

Question , I have a spare Latitude D600 screen 14.1" , with the same Connector on the LCD ( 30pin )
Could I use that with the P200 Invertor to see if there is a signal / feed from the MoBo connector .

thank you

You need to use the 17.1? display.

I have a new ProBook 645 G1 that I use most of the time with a Dell 34" monitor (3415w) connected via the DisplayPort with the lid closed on the ProBook. If I lift the lid on the ProBook, the display switches to the laptop fine, and if I close the lid, it switches back to the external monitor fine. However, if I switch inputs on the monitor to view a different computer, then switch the monitor back to view the DisplayPort that the ProBook is connected to, the ProBook will not display, either on the external monitor or on its own screen (if I open the lid on the ProBook, the display on the ProBook is black as well). The only way I have found to recover the display on the ProBook is to force the laptop down by holding the power key until it powers off, then powering it back on and letting it boot up. I have tried cycling the lid and waiting to see if the ProBook will eventually output on the DisplayPort or the ProBook screen. It won?t. I have tried the Windows +P keys without effect, as well as unplugging the DisplayPort cable from the ProBook, but the display on the ProBook will not come back on. The ProBook boots up fine on the external monitor. I have found that if I open the lid on the ProBook *before* I switch the input on the monitor away from the ProBook, then switch the monitor back to the DisplayPort connected to the ProBook and close the lid, it switches back to the external monitor fine. HP Compaq nc 8230, XP Pro SP3

Hadn't used the laptop for awhile, had black screen after I charged it then tried to start it.

Disconnected the battery & held start switch for about a minute, reinstalled the battery, then the hp logo showed on startup and after a couple tries Windows booted.

Was trying to find out how to run an external monitor. Went into the control panel / display / settings, found that I had 2 options under DISPLAY, but both were identically worded - basically for multiple monitors. One was #1, the other was #2. I hooked up the external monitor and it worked fine. I tried toggling between #1 to #2 with no problem or change in what was displayed.

I shut down the laptop, then unplugged the external monitor.

When I try to restart, I have a black screen, nothing at all shows incl the hp logo that usually shows right at the start. The HDD, etc, indicator lights still show that things are running normally.

The only thing I did was leave it on the #2 display setting, altho it read identical to #1, essentially "multiple monitors"

When I got the black screen on startup after disconnecting the external monitor, I also tried the fn+f4 button which is supposed to be the multiple monitor function, without any result or change in the black screen. When I had the external monitor hooked up and working I tried that to see if it had any effect but it did not.

Appreciate any help to get the display back to functioning.

Hi,

I have my M5 connected to a TV via a SCART plug (s-video -> scart adapter).
It all works fine (including the sound) except that the picture is in B&W.
Whatever I do, I cannot get it to be colour.

When I do S-video->s-video (into a projector) the colour is fine.

Any clues as to what I might do to get a colour pic on my telly?

Answer:Tecra M5 - External Monitor (TV) Graphics in Black and White

Simply answer. The pin assignment of the scart cable is wrong. I had the same problem with my TV. There was a black/white picture and I didn?t know why.
I have checked the contacts and moved the cable up and down and for some reason the color appeared. Then I tired 3 different scart cables and one of have functioned.

Maybe this helps.

The y510p (single 750m version) outputs a black screen to Asus PB278Q monitor over HDMI, at any resolution, in any duplicate/extend/only mode using both Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other monitors work fine. This monitor supports 2560x1440, however even lower resolutions produce only a black screen. The monitor model name and supported resolution is recognized by Windows, and the monitor also recognizes that a signal is present over HDMI. However the screen is black, and the monitor, while connected and active, freezes to some extent as the menu buttons do not function until the signal is removed (removing the cable or deactivating the second display output). A theory I have is that the issue is with the Intel HD 4600, and if it were possible to force the use of the nVidia 750m in a single GPU setup then it may work. There are no BIOS options to this effect and the "preferred GPU" selection in the nVidia Control Panel has no effect outside of 3D applications. My colleague has a y500 with a dual 650m SLI setup and the monitor works fine for him. I have read that the SLI models use only the two nVidia GPUs and completely disable the Intel. Is it possible to also disable the Intel when only a single 750m is present, and/or is it possible to purchase a second 750m for the ultrabay separately?

Hello,

I have problems with HDMI connection to TV.
At FULL HD resolution is in 42" FULL HD TV about 4 cm black edges all around display.
I tried with 3 different HDMI cables, 2 different FULL HD TV and one LCD screen, but everywhere were black edges. Black edges appears when you start computer (at first Toshiba screen and BIOS too).
With same cables and monitors but other laptop is picture without edges.

When I was tryed with HDMI cable (stl.U500) which have got on the other side DVI output (LCD FULL HD screen) was picture without black edges. With normal VGA - VGA cable is FULL HD picture also without edges.
Where could be a problem?
System is Windows 7 64bit with latest ATI display driver and latest BIOS (2.20).

Greetings

Answer:Satellite U500 - Black edges on external monitor

Hi Mathew,

I?m not a Satellite U500 owner but I assume there must be something wrong with the settings. I never had any problem with the HDMI connection to my external monitor or TV. It?s always working fine.

Anyway, what screen resolution you are using on external monitor? You should use the native screen resolution on external monitor. Then you should be able to use fullscreen mode there.

In the last few months I have purchased the ProBook 655, UltraSlim Docking Station, and two monitors all from HP.com.  I am trying to connect the monitors from the Docking station's DisplayPort to the Monitors VGA port.  The screen flicker, shake, and go black then come back on again.  I have updated the graphics card. Updated the firmware for the Docking Station with several different updates (SP69276.exe, SP74203.exe, and SP75855.exe). All this resulted in absolutely no change. Also, tried 4 different cables.  If I undock the computer and use the displayport on the side of the computer the monitors work perfectly.  So I don't think that it has to do with the graphics card.  The VGA to VGA cable between the docking station and monitor works great too.  But I really desire to run to full size monitors and there is only one VGA port on the docking station. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?  I am finding it impossible to even find a phone number to call HP to see if they can help.

I have a Dell notebook with XP Media Direct. The display goes black soon after boot-up while an external monitor functions. When the notebook lid closed and re-opened, the display comes back temporarily, the external seems to reset, and then the notebook display returns to black. I have hibernate turned off, standby set to never and sleep set to never.

I tested standby and hibernate and they both display that they are either about to switch to standby or hibernate before the display turns off.

I don't think it is a heat issue because it happens even after the notebook has been off for awhile and turned back on. I've updated the video drivers.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Scott

Answer:Notebook display goes black, but external monitor is functional??

i believe this is a feature, not a problem.

Most laptops will shut off their screen when an external monitor is connected to save power. However, depending on your laptop, there should be a Fn command allowing you to swap display modes (only ext, only laptop, or both)

Answer:xps 13 9350 external monitor turn black then back on again

Hi Josh,
Did you find a solution to the described problem? It shows up with my XS 13 9350 as well. Both when I attach a monitor via the usb3.1 Port through a hdmi adaptor and when I attach it via usb3.0 through the Dell DA100 adaptor.

Laptop: HP OMEN 15-ax003nMonitor: HP 22xw Monitor 21.5" DisplayConnected via HDMII'm having issues when trying to play a video in fullscreen on my secondary monitor. I'm runing dual screens with the external monitor being my Primary Monitor  So when I play a youtube video in fullscreen on the secondary I can hear audio, pause, play etc but it's just a black screen. However, if I make the laptop screen my primary display in the microsoft display settings and play a youtube video fullscreen on the secondary monitor it works.... but I can see the quality is not as clear as it should be. Is this an issue with the graphics cards? It looks like the laptop runs of the intel card and the monitior runs of the nVidia... or do the display sizes just not work together?

I have two NEC MultiSync LCD 2070NX monitors connected (DVI) to a Dell Precision T5500 workstation with Windows 7 Professional. One monitor does not work properly. The screen is black, showing no picture. Remote controlling the computer, I can use both screens as if everything was OK.Tested the monitor on another computer having Windows 10 Professional, similar hardware, and now connected with VGA, the same problem occurs. Everything is working fine remotely, as if there were two screens with no problems while remote controlling the computer. The monitor itself does not have any pictures, no display, and the screen stays black. A green lamp shows that the monitor is switched on.Is the monitor broken? Can I somehow repair or fix this problem before throwing it?

Answer:External monitor, no picture, screen stays black

Some Dell displays require you to use the built-in setup to identify the connection you are using. Use the button on the display itself to enter the menu and choose the vga connection. If that doesn't work, try a different type of connection or cable.

When my laptop is plugged into an external monitor, the laptop screen is the "primary" display, where programs automatically open, etc. Is there a way to make the primary display not the laptop screen but the external monitor screen? Here's the catch--is there a way to do it *without looking at the primary monitor*?

I have this strange request because my laptop's screen recently died. I have connected an external monitor, and so can still use the computer--more or less. The problem is that I can't see my start menu, etc--they are all on the laptop screen, ie, the dead one.

I know, normally, how to switch the display: I would right click on the desktop and select "personalize," then "display" But when I do this, it opens the display in the primary monitor (the broken laptop monitor) and I can't see it to change the settings. It's a sad catch 22.

If anyone could help me with this is would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi nomonitor, and welcome to TSG

Check your user manual for the laptop to see if has has a special key or a Function key that lets you toggle between the internal display and external monitor.

Hello,

I have a problem with my Tecra A10 Notebook.

When I connect an external monitor to the Notebook I have to switch the displays manually because the external one doesn't show anything. When I disconnect the monitor I have to switch the displays manually with FN+F5 because the internal display doesn't show anything.

My old Notebook (Tecra A9 (PTS52E-0E702NGR)) switched the displays automatically whenever I connected or disconnected an external monitor.

Does anyone have an idea why the A10 doesn't switch them automatically like the old notebook? Maybe it's only one little point in the preferences of the display driver that I don't see right now. :-)

hi SilverWizard,

try to update the following components (dont worry no screwdriver needed):

- common modules
- controls
- Hotkey Utilities for Display Devices
- grafics driver (display driver)
- and the most importent one: Display Device Change

i think at least one of them is corrupted or not properly installed...

pls report if any of the suggested works for you.

Hi,Maybe somebody can help me with this. Today when I turned on my T400 the LDC screen went black after starting windows. I can see the booting messages but when starts loading windows 7 (displays the windows logo) the LDC screen in the laptop goes black. If I connect a external monitor directly to the laptop, LDC starts displaying.Even if the monitor the monitor does not have any display the LDC is working. If I change the settings to display in boths. Both screens work. I made all possible combinations and everytime if I disconnecte the external monitor the screen goes black.I used a dock station and it does not work. LDC and monitor (connected to dock station) were black. If I connect the monitor directly to the laptop the dock station and the LDC worked fine. So display in dock station and LDC only work is an external monitor is directly connected to the laptop. Any idea why this is happening or have a similar problem?Thank you,Rob

Hi There! I am owning a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and have been trying to connect it to different external monitors in the past, almost always experiencing issues with the screen fading black after some seconds. This time I am connecting a Samsung S22D300HY to my Yoga 2 Pro via a VGA wire + a VGA to Micro-HDMI wire. After connecting, the external screen works accordingly for a couple of seconds and then turns black after the word "Analog" pops up. My roommate also has a Yoga 2 Pro and when we were testing the same external monitor with his Yoga 2 Pro, everything worked accordingly. I have been trying to find a solution for this problem for months now and could not find anything that would help. I updated the BIOS, cut the wire so it can be plugged deeper, but still am facing the problem. If anyone of you knows a possible solution, I would be very happy to hear it. Working with an external monitor is crucial to me and I would be so relieved if I could fix this. All the best,sp4nki

No Solution?  I now bought an extra VGA to USB adapter. The external monitor now shows an image, but in 800x600 resolution, which is total crap. I'd be soooo happy if there would be a way to fix this..

My new thinkpad laptop runs Vista Ultimate. When using an external monitor (via VGA), the screen goes black after the green loading bar. Vista is booting fine however as I can toggle to the laptop screen and see it there. The external monitor is working, as I can get the Thinkpad recovery system, BIOS, etc to display, just not Vista. I've tried every setting I can think of and tried updating the drivers but nothing helps. Are there any wiser heads out there?

Dear members of the Toshiba Forum and her guests,

Several months ago I found a ancient laptop. When I turn it on, the screen remains black. And when I connect an external monitor to the laptop through VGA, both screens remain black. I used a flashlight, pointed it at the LCD panel of the laptop, but I can't see any details on the screen.

I thought it was because of the empty RAM-slots. This week I've bought a RAM-unit and installed it.
I tried to boot the laptop again, but nothing on both screens (even when I used a flashlight).
I've searched on the Internet for some solutions, but nothing works. I also tried to update the BIOS, as found on Toshiba's website.

Some information about the laptop:
Toshiba Satellite 210CS/1.3
PA1230E
48MB RAM
1.3GB HDD

Date manufactured: 4^th^ october 1997

If you want to know more or need more information, please put a comment in this thread.

I hope someone can help me solve this problem.

Thanks in forward.

Answer:Satellite 210CS - screen remains black (even at external monitor)

I think there must be some serious hardware issue.
I don't think that someone will be able to say what part malfunctions exactly since it could be any internal part.
You purchases new RAMs. Well, in this case we can exclude the RAM problem but probably there is an motherboard, CPU or graphic card problem.

From my point of few you have no many options: maybe you could found some other good working Satellite 210CS somewhere in the internet since it will not be very easy to get spare parts for such oldie

I have been using a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro for just over a year. I use it at work with an external monitor which I connect via a micro-HDMI to VGA adapter. There are several times during the day that the screen on the external montior would flicker, and the connection would be lost. I would usually just reconnect the display and the external monitor would display again.  A few days ago (4 days after the warranty expired), while connected to the external display, the monitor on my Yoga went completely black. Now it won't come back on. Sometimes on startup I can see a very faint "Lenovo" logo, but that quickly goes away. I know the computer is still on because the windows logo still vibrates on the screen when touched. Anyway, does anybody know what could be causing this and how to fix it? I took it to my local Microsoft store and they said that I should replace the motherboard, but I got a feeling they didn't really know what was going on with it. I have not had any problems with this computer until now and it would be a shame if the motherboard is indeed the problem. I have really liked the computer but don't think I would buy another lenovo if I had to replace the motherboard. I have never dropped or significantly damaged it. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo Yoga 2 screen went black while on external monitor and won't come back on

hi smalley3,

Welcome to the Forums.

The flickering issue maybe due to a bad LCD cable or in some cases, a faulty GPU (the GPU is integrated to the CPU, and the CPU is soldered to the motherboard).

If there's still no image on the screen even after connecting an external display then you likely have a bad GPU.

In this case, I recommend you contact support for service (and also to see if there's a consideration that can be done on the warranty repair).

Hello to everybody,

I have a similar problem with A100-646 (bought in Italy). Laptop's LCD and external monitor shows black screen but system boots without other problem. When laptop is not used for a long time (half a year) it work for one week without any problem.

Unfortunately, there is no proper service in a place where I live. Perhaps, there is a problem with power supply.

Is there other idea? Does anybody have a service manual? ([email protected])

Answer:Satellite A100-646 and external monitor shows black screen

Service manuals are available only for ASP technicians?
Unfortunately, it looks like a hardware issue and therefore you should get in contact with a notebook technician in order to check the faulty parts!

Hi,  When using external display with my SL300, the screen will go blank for 2-5 seconds and then reappear. It does this maybe once every couple of days. Sometimes this happens much more often. And then it's very annoying. When the picture reappears, the HDMI signal indicator (monitor is BenQ 2400W) is displayed in screen. I have tried different cables with no change. My PS3 hooked up to my screen through hdmi cable and it works just fine. Any idea what the problem could be?  I'm thinking its signal loss from my SL300 but wanted to see if anyone else experienced this? My hardware: BenQ 2400W (1920x1200)SL300, Intel graphics version

Hello

I've got some problems with the screen of my toshiba laptop satellite A500-14k (p/n:PSAM3E-02Q008FR)

In the beginning, the display in the screen was blurry and not stable. I had to tilt the screen to get an image.
But recently, i've no display at all on the laptop screen.

However, the display is alright on an external source by using the HDMI or VGA output. I think that the problem is not in the motherboard or the graphic card but perhaps in the screen, the lcd inverter or the LVDS video cable.

Is my deduction correct or not?

First i'm going to change the lcd cable but i cant find the model for my laptop (dc02000ud00 p/n K000080540) at a reasonable price.

I've checked on ebay and i would like to know if the lcd cable for toshiba satellite A505 could fit my laptop like this product

http://cgi.ebay.fr/TOSHIBA-A500-A505-VIDEO-CABLE-6017B0201901-V000190070-/120554876390

It is said that the cable is for satellite A500 and A505 in their US model. Do you think this could be compatible with my french model?

Another question is about the RAM cover door. I've lost mine and i would like to know the reference of a new one (product number ?)

The shape is like on the Toshiba Personal Computer Satellite Maintenance Manual that i found in this site (see page 25 of the manual)

http://tim.id.au/laptops/toshiba/satellite%20a500%20pro%20a500.pdf

Thank you for your replies

I agree with you? it?s not related to the graphic chip on the motherboard.
It must be something wrong with LCD screen or a tiny part like FL inverter or similar?

In your case I would recommend asking the Toshiba authorized service partner in your country for compatible parts.
In such case you are always on the safe side and can be 100% sure that ordered parts would be fully compatible.

I've got an E550 that refuses to link to an external monitor.  They simply don't exist as far as it's concerned.  To date I've tried

Reimaging the system.
Loading and reloading video drivers.
Multiple monitors
Multiple video cables
Multiple types of cables (VGA and DP)
Accessing directly from the system and through a docking station (neither work).

I also sent it in to Lenovo for repair.  It appears they replaced the motherboard, didn't test it, and sent it back.

A few other symptoms to chew on.  Hitting fn-F7 keys does nothing.  The system does recognize the docking station when it's plugged in.  The only drivers I haven't been able to nail down from Lenovo's site are the "Lenovo Connect Device 1.0" driver and the "PCI Data Acquisition and Signla Processing Controller."

If anyone has any suggestions on what to try next I'm all eyes!

I am going to detail my experience connecting my brand new Lenovo Yoga 920-13IKB-80Y70063US to my also brand new LG 43UD79-B 43" Class 4K UHD IPS LED Monitor which has a USB-C port in addition to its 2xHMDI/DP/2xUSB3.0 ports. First of all , it works! I get both power delivery and am able to extend the screen onto the monitor in 4K resolution using one USB-C cable. I am writing here to help others, but also because there is a power cycling order in which it does not work, which I would like to know if someone knows what it is. If I play with it enough, I get back to making it work again, but have not figured out the order of rebooting, connecting and disconnecting cables where it consistently works. Power delivery is always working through the cable, the monitor extension is what I have to play to get it working. OK, so here are the steps I need to get these to to work together: 1 - After unboxing Yoga 920, run windows update and reboot several times until it says there is nothing else to update. Hello guys,

Can I use my geforce card for a external monitor BenQ Xl2420t?
The vga and hdmi only goes for the intel graphic card

Answer:Qosmio X70 - How to use nVidia GPU in connection with external monitor

same problem here,

'm getting a little frustrated trying to get my laptop working with my LG DLP 3D ready projector to display in 3D. The projector itself will work in 3D as long as the resolution is [email protected] and the laptop's NVidia GTX 770M should have no issues driving the projector with this resolution.

Where it seems like the problems occur is Intel HD 4600 graphics driver gets in the way every time i try to run anything 3D, the software I?m using to run any 3D type files do not recognize the projector as a 3D capable device because all the laptop is using is the Intel HD 4600 graphics.

If I could somehow turn off the Intel graphics and just force the laptop to just use the NVidia card I think all my issues will go away. I just am not having success in doing this.

I have tried to go into the NVidia control panel and under 3D settings pick the software program that runs my 3D files and tell it to use the NVidia card...but it never works.

I think everything is sent through the Intel graphics card regardless if the laptop is using the NVidia card (just guessing here)?

I also tried to simply uninstall the drivers but that did not work,
I also tried to disable the Intel graphics but it then went into some type of generic display driver mode and still would not work.

I also went into the BIOS to look for any settings that would allow me to disable the Intel graphics card ..no luck, could not find any settings for this.

Hello, I used a Belkin USB-C to HDMI (4K/60Hz) adapter in series with an HDMI to VGA adapter to extend my workspace.  I used an old monitor that came with a Dell Desktop ages ago.  Early this afternoon, things worked perfectly.  With the laptop and the monitor on, I plugged in the adapter and initially the combination came up "duplicate."  I opened the F10 menu and selected "extend" and worked non-stop for about 2 hours.   I had old documents open on the laptop display while I authored new documents on the extended display. Before the 910, laptops I used had HDMI ports to which I plugged in the HDMI VGA adapter and I never thought much about how the combinations worked (as they never failed). After dinner, I prepped the system to show recorded video on the external monitor for an online class I'm taking so I could use the laptop display to search for information, images, etc when recorded lessons are vague/incomplete.  Then I went back to parenting. When I came down after putting the kids to bed, the laptop had gone to sleep. When I woke the device, the external monitor reported "no signal detected" and the display on the laptop kept flickering.  This is a new experience for me. Unplugging the USB C adapter stopped the flashing.  I don't know how to return the system to whatever was working before the sleep cycle.   So I started searching for others' wisdom and experience.  I read o... The standard laptop we use is the Lenovo P50.I've been working at this company for about 6 months now and I've had almost a dozen occasions of people telling me that their external monitors (usually connected by HDMI) will not turn on after: A) a reboot, orB) disconnecting/reconnecting displays while going between meetings around the office. In most cases, the only remedy ends up being to toggle the display settings in BIOS from "hybrid" to "discrete" and then back to "hybrid". This is not a permanent solution. We do not have a standard monitor at this company, so the issues persists across multiple monitor brands and types. I've tried numerous driver updates and basic windows troubleshooting, but to no avail. The only consistent recourse is to toggle the BIOS display settings, which is awful. Has anyone had a similar experience with these laptops? Perhaps different Lenovo models that have nvidia graphics components? Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I've been searching a lot on the Internet for a solution to this specific problem I have but could not find a thread
with exactly the same problem.I have a Toshiba Tecra M3 with WinXp SP 3. Two weeks ago I encountered problems with starting up. After a couple of times restarting it would work. From then on it became worse... When I try to start up I see no splash.. the screen stays black. If I press the power button I hear the fan and the CD-drive but no screen. It's totally black. I know its working because I can go (blindly) into setup; press end, then Y and then enter. The notebook will restart but still no screen.

I hooked it up to an external monitor. Pressing Fn and F5 enables switching. The external monitor shows different
vertical lines in multiple colours. They change if I go to setup or try to start windows.

Does anyone have a solution to these problems?

Answer:Tecra M3: black screen on start, vertical lines on external monitor

I am afraid solution can be given by service only.
In my opinion this issue should be tested properly.

I cannot say for sure but for me it sounds like technical issue. Without testing you will not know for sure what the problem is.
Here on the forum we can just speculate why this happen.

As you see on notebook???s LCD there is problem. On external it doesn???t work properly as well. It can be defective graphic adapter.
Try to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service and talk with technician.

Hi, I have a ThinkPad T60P, and a couple of weeks ago, I lost color on my external monitor (connected by VGA cable)I have done a lot of testing, and found a couple of strange things around this: *  when using docking station with two monitors, only monitor nr "1" inCatalyst Control Center shows colors, but not "2".* When using external monitor (or projector) I don't get color* When showing video on the external monitor, color works(!) This is only on some type of videos, I think. Flash videos (ie. YouTube does not show colors)* When getting a bluescreen, the external monitor displays bluescreen with colors. When rebooting after bluescreen, colors were working while booting (windows logo with colors), but as soon as XP was up, colors were gone(!)* I have tried updating to the latest graphics driver (79d533ww.exe), and all the settings in Catalyst Control Center /  Control Panel As a result of these findings, I beleive it must be a software problem, but since upgrading the drivers didn't work, I don't know what to try next. I see also that there are other people experiencing the same problems, but I can't find any solution to this problem.Re:http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3597258 Hope someone can help me here! Best regards, pmlovold
