Satellite C660-1F1 Toshiba HDD Recovery "Setup is starting services" hang?

Question: Satellite C660-1F1 Toshiba HDD Recovery "Setup is starting services" hang?

This is my second attempt to recovery using the hidden image. The first attempt hung at an earlier point Loading Windows 7 ;( However on this attempt it has been over an hour on the "Setup is starting services" screen with a moving light under it.

Does anyone have any reasonable idea how much time this process takes? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Satellite C660-1F1 Toshiba HDD Recovery "Setup is starting services" hang?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite C660-1F1 Toshiba HDD Recovery "Setup is starting services" hang?

Powered off after 2 hours.

Seems that it could be BIOS version currently 1.2 needs upgrade to a more recent version so I'll have a look at that. Also possible issue with bootrec maybe.

I'll update later :)

I accidentally deleted files from my laptop Acer Aspire 5551, and now it will not boot. My friend let me borrow his windows 7 64bit recovery I tried the 'repair your computer' option. It seemed to work however, now whenever my laptop starts it says 'setup is starting services' then tells me that the installation cannot continue although it was a repair not a re-installation so I scouted round forums and found a few solutions, most involving command prompt. I checked the partitions for an installation, from bootrec .exe /scanos: there were no installations however using diskpart there were. I've tried almost everything I can think of and read about I am at a loss. Any ideas? But if there are they must be things that can be done quickly and could you please reply asap as tomorrow a computer technician is picking it up after midday, i'm in England btw, am I better just leaving it for the technician or is there any really last minute I could try? Also if this issue is fixed I still need to fix the deleted files issue if it does not boot.

Apologies for the long winded-ness of my issue.

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 7 Setup is starting services hang.

Did you also try the System Restore Option?

Have you tried Tapping F8 at boot and choose 'Last Known Good Config'. Also, are you able to boot in Safe Mode?

Also, are you able to plug the damaged HDD into a working computer as a slave and run a sfc/scannow on it eg: "drive letter of damaged drive":\sfc/scannow (without the quotes) I have never actually tried it, but it should work.
Do you have access to his actual install disk should the sfc/scannow require some files.

You will have to run the sfc/scannow via an elevated command prompt. Start> and type cmd and right click on cmd.exe in list above and select 'Run as administrator', then do "drive letter of damaged drive":\sfc/scannow

on the laptop TOSHIBA C660, replaced the hard drive and, as a fact, the OS flew down (Windows 7 SP1 HB x 64).
Installed not licensed, there was no way out, on the Microsoft website, to download the image, the key from the laptop is not suitable.

Not a licensed image, there was no desire to put, the assembly is an assembly, naturally installed such an operating system behaved badly, buggy.

Done, and now the laptop does not work.
In the service center installation of OS and drivers costs 3500 rbl.

Offensively. So I'm looking for help on the forum.

Please, kindly request help. Thank you.

I spend some hours to try to create the recovery disks for my Laptop (Satellite C660-1DG)

It fails on the second DVD halfway. It just hangs. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work anymore a cold boot is required to start the thing again.

I tried several DVD's but NOGO each time halfway the second DVD it hangs.

I really need to create these recovery DVD's because Im going to upgrade the laptop to run a Windows Server 2012 install for development purposes.

I thought this would take just a minimum amount of time but... of course...

Any thoughs on any way to get this stuff working?

Answer:Satellite C660-1DG - Toshiba Media Creator Recovery fails creating 2nd DVD

I burned just another disk and it was full of validation errors: hundreds.

So I connected my external DVD writer (NEC ND-3500AG) (firmware 2.1A) and took THE SAME DVD and burned it: presto: no problems: 0 validation errors

So I deduce that the internal DVD writer (TSSTcorp TS-L633C) (firmware TF20) is chunky.

I am still in warranty but... is it any use?

couple of years ago I bought this laptop for my girlfriend who decided finally to use internet at home.

Since the day 1 this laptop had problem when starting remaining for the most on black screen and with just the fan noise and the battery and the ON led giving some signs of life.

Anyway after a couple of on/off it used to start and been blaming about it the house temperature not really the best during the winter period.

After few months my girlfriend gave up using it and just just put back in the box where been resting up to one week ago when she gave it back to me together with other things cause the end of our relationship.

Yesterday the laptop started fine at the 1st shot and been working on it a couple of hours without any issue then switched off normally.

Today instead this laptop doesn't want really know about starting in any mode: no matter how many time I switch it off/on but nothing.

Tried to swap ram position, clean it, the 60 second on the power button trick but nothing.
The laptop yesterday been working on a table with no cooling problems at all: now my question

What can be wrong with this laptop expecially considering it been bought brand new off amazon but had this issue since the day one?

Thanks for your attention and

Answer:Satellite C660-19G is not starting

>What can be wrong with this laptop expecially considering it been bought brand new off amazon but had this issue since the day one?

Hmm? probably an hardware malfunction causes this issue.
I?m thinking about RAM or motherboard problem.

You said, you have already swap the RAM slots. But did you use new, good tested RAM modules? I think it?s definitely worth a check.

The motherboard problem would be the worst case since such part is very expensive.

However, if this issue has appeared from first day of purchase, I?m wondering why this unit has not been replaced in the past under warranty conditions.

I have a problem starting my C660. Yesterday the whole computer looked while I was using it, the screen turned black and I got a message about "Crash dump... something"... I didn't get the time to read it... I started the computer again and performed start recovery of windows.

But now when I start the computer I get a message that starts with licens information and then it's searches for Bot file... and sometimes it starts and sometimes it says " no operating system found"....

What to do? I have created a start recovery back-up on an extern harddrive... but no disk... From Toshiba recovery media... Is it possible for me to use that if everything goes wrong or do I need a DVD with recovery?

Please help me :) I'm writing my master thesis and don't have time for computer problems.

It looks a little bit like a HDD malfunction?if you are lucky man then only the system has been destroyed and new OS installation should fix this?

> What to do? I have created a start recovery back-up on an extern harddrive... but no disk... From Toshiba recovery media... Is it possible for me to use that if everything goes wrong or do I need a DVD with recovery?

I assume such backup can be used only if the Windows OS is running but don?t think that you will be able to use this in order to reinstall the whole system. I think you will need to use the Recover disk or a clean Microsoft Windows DVD.

The Toshiba recover disk can be ordered here and is not really expensive:

Hey guys!

For one reason and another I'm considering ordering a Toshiba C660 recovery disk' (Mainly because I would like to sell this laptop and a clean install of Windows 7 is more appealing and secure) but before I go ahead and buy the disk from Toshiba, I presume I will have to enter the windows 7 product key printed on the bottom of my laptop?

The only real problem with this is the key has faded quite badly (Being on the bottom it's seen some use..) and I can't quite make out the last few numbers on the sticker

Is there a way I can get a new key? Or get around entering the key on the new install of windows?

For those interested, a photo of the sticker is below, maybe someone with better eyesight could help?

<Image removed to avoid piracy - ETAF Moderator>

Answer:Toshiba C660 Recovery Disk - Few Questions

I removed the image, because if anyone can read the key - they can use it and put on the internet for anyone to use

Use this program and you will get the key

you can also use Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security audits and more.
to get the key

Also goto the toshiba site and download all the drivers for the PC and put them on a Disk - that will make it easy to re-install any drivers if needed.

Also you could probably make the recovery DVD your self - if the PC has a recovery partition
You should have a recovery manager to create the media

have a look at
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Manager
Disk Manager

should see if there is a partition called recovery

My daughter's laptop keeps freezing; I have used the internal `Repair' to set it back to the factory settings, but it is still the same. I have been told that it is a common symptom of a faulty hard drive, for which I was quoted approx £170.00 to replace and install the operating system. I am not a computer technician, but as I was a tv engineer, so feel that fitting a new HDD is within my capabilities, and as a replacement HDD from Toshiba is £80, this seems the logical thing to do; however before I buy a new HDD, can anyone tell me if it is correct that the freezing may be the result of it failing? I would just like the opinion of other people with computer knowledge before I spend my money, and I will not blame anyone if I choose to follow their advice and it doesn't cure the problem.
Any advice would be very welcome.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Pro C660 - 1ux HDD

FReeezing PC

Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans
PSU voltages (not applicable to laptops)
Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off (does it freeze when running on battery only?)
faulty memory stick try memtest click here virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use
driver conflicts especially graphics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment.

You can run a check on the drive. In explorer right click the drive select properties - Tools tab - check drive.
It may also freeze if there are a lot of windows open at the same time and cpu is at 100%
Or if there is not much spare space on the drive.
Model of toshiba laptop? Most hard drives ae easy to change as located under a cover on the base , some are harder to get at as may be under the keyboard. We can probably find a Youtube video or strip down instruction easy enough.
If it really is the drive then you an image the whole drive to an external drive using the free Macrium reflect make the rescue media from the same program - fit a new drive and restore the image to the new drive.

I am installing Win7 on Acer Aspire 1410 using USB. I've used this USB several times and just recently so i'm sure that the problem is not on my USB stick. But this time It just hangs and got stuck on Setup is starting. I tried it several times just to check if it will pass on that setup is starting screen, i also leave it overnight with that Setup is starting but to no avail.I also check on the internet for possible solutions. Some says to Disable FDD in BIOS, but there's no FDD options in the BIOS. I also remove 1GB memory stick but nothing happens.I also tried to install Win7 by patiently waiting to load windows normally and sticking up my USB but it just also hangs on the copying temporary files and no luck.Additional info.I tried to reformat this laptop since it boots way too long (waiting 10mins before it loads windows content) and when one of its partition becomes unselectable that whenever i try to click it to show its contents it does nothing. Thanks in advance

Alright, so I downloaded Windows 7 last week onto my memory stick, and just tried installing it last night. Seems like I ran into a HUGE problem. The setup was going quickly and smoothly choose clean install. Until I got to the very end when it seems like it froze at "Windows is Completing Installation". I googled it and it seems it is because my USB memory stick was plugged in(very known problem it seems) So me being a fool restarted it and unplugged the memory stick thinking it will just start were I left off. I start it up and I get "Setup is Starting Services" at first it said Installation was interrupted setup will resume after restart. So it restarted and I was welcomed with the same screen again "Setup is Starting Services" but instead of saying the Installation will resume thing it just went to a black screen and restarted. Now it just keeps looping around "Setup is Starting Services" and then restarts. Repeat. Is there anyway to fix this? I was thinking of a few ways!

1.) Buy a Windows 7 installation Disc(someone at my work might be able to lend me Ultimate. Will that work if I was installing Home Premium?

2.) Re-download it and plug in the USB device? (most likely wont work?)

3.) Contact Dell since I am under warranty and tell them it turned off in the middle of installation because it overheated? And maybe they can send a recovery disc or something like that.

Hey everyone, my name is Steven, Looking for a Solution to a " SETUP IS STARTING SERVICES" error after I did a Factory Restore (but backed up the C Drive like an idiot). I have tried "SHIFT F10" during restart, and typing REGEDIT, and changing the SETUP.EXE value from 1 to 3. But still no change. I still get the SETUP IS STARTING SERVICES. Also It already said "CANNOT INSTALL WINDOWS blah blah blah restart thing" But still no change. What can I do? on ACER ASPIRE ONE.
Im trying ALT F12, and starting it in a different option. *Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation.

I have restarted the installation and still nothing...setup is starting services...

Hi.Ill give you the full story so as to get the best response possible.

A couple of weeks ago my screen would freeze after it was left for around an hour,i would have absoloutly no control of anything i couldnt CTRL+ALT & DEL,the entire screen froze, the only thing i could do was hold the power button down untill it turned off so i could restart.I changed all the power options as well as screen saver options etc but nothing fixed it,i did scans with malware bytez and microsoft security essentials but nothing was found and it stayed the same.Lastnight i whent on my pc and it froze withing 5 mins,i would restart and it did the same thing,so i booted it in safe mode and it was fine,i did msconfig and unchecked everything on startup and all the services minus microsoft ones,i then booted it in normal mode and it worked and there was no crashing,i played it for the rest of the night fine.

Thismorning however i booted it up and its crashed again so i did the packard bell restore in which you boot the pc on a recovery disc 1 (3 discs in total). Its been going fine but now its on "Setup is starting services" and its been around half hour,it hasnt froze as the little white bar under the text is still doing its effects.

Is this length of time normal?

Why does it keep crashing?

P.S i dont think its overheating, the pc isnt even a year old and i dont run anything that takes a high demand of ram gpu or processing?

Does anybody have any idea as to what I need to do to get it running again? Thanks.

Recently my Satellite C660-1F1 laptop has starting switching off without warning and i've read in other forums that it could be a overheating problem.

Have you got any tips on how i can fix this?

Answer:Satellite C660-1F1 has starting switching off without warning

Yes, one of the solutions might be the cleaning of cooling fans.
Dust and debris inside the unit and cooling modules could affect the fan functionality.
The air circulation might be affected too? so remove the dust using compressed air spray.
Its good tool to get such issues fixed without notebook disassembling.

Hello! I have a 'newbie' question, if anyone can help, I'd be very grateful :)

I received a refurbished c660-2d7 from Currys yesterday and the fan keeps starting up and stopping. Wouldn't usually worry me too much(it's not especially loud or anything), but as it's a refurb. and I don't know what it was returned for previously, I want to be sure it's healthy! It's not running hot at all, it's stone-cold to the touch, and I'm not doing anything too straining(a couple of tabs open in google chrome and occasionally playing a game of solitaire), but maybe it's not hot because the fan is doing it's job, hehe! It gives a quiet little whirr then stops every few minutes, is this normal and okay?

It's my first time owning a windows laptop and from what I've seen of other people's, the fan is usually on and loud or off altogether(not going to compare it to past macbooks as they're like mini cookers and pretty much need to run the fan at maximum all the time), so I wondered if it was trying to start the fan/fans up and failing? Is there a utility on it anywhere that will check if the fans are okay?(It came with a lot of Toshiba apps, haven't checked them all out yet).

If it's normal and they all do this, that's fine, just want to get it fixed asap if it's sickly and/or needs the fan/fans replacing. Thanks for any advice you can give!

Edit: Also the harddrive is split into two equal partitions, is it possible to undo this easily? It seems pointless to have it divided up that w... Read more

Answer:Satellite C660-2d7 fan keeps starting up and stopping - is it normal?

Yes, this is nothing unusual? the fan keeps starting if an certain temperature level has been approached.
You can also control this fan behavior a little bit.

You can change the Win 7 power management settings to more battery friendly status.
In such case the CPU would not create too much warmness and the cooling modules would not run too often.

Aspire one netbook with windows 7model PAV70 i tried to restore it to factory settings (backed up to C file)it went fine untill it got stuck in a loop saying it couldnt install windows and had to be restarted. i would restart and it would go to the same error over and over then i tried to use the recovery discs (unsure of how to use them) i hooked up the external drive and powered on but no options came up although the disc was making noise as if activated. i left that going all night but no change. NOW i power on and only get SETUP IS STARTING SERVICES i have tried F8, F11, F12, ALT + F10 and nothingthe only thing that worked was shift+F10 (i tried ms00be but got nothing) (i did regedit/child comp/1 changed to 3 etc but nothing) the only way i can get a response from the computer is SHIFT + F10 or if i press the space bar to "pause system resume" this gives the option to "continue" in which its back to being stuck on the SETUP screen or i could press "delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" SO should i try to delete the data and go to boot menu? if so where do i go from there?

Close these applications and click retry to cointinue. SmartFaceVWatcher.exe

Please could some explain what i need to do?

Answer:Satellite C660 - Toshiba face recognition

SmartFaceVWatcher.exe belongs to the Toshiba software and I think this related to face recognition utility.
To be honest I?m not quite sure what cause the error message but I recommend doing this;
- Uninstall face recognition utility

- Reboot several times and install the face recognition utility again
- Reboot the notebook, run once again CCleaner and then start the face recognition utility

Hello everyone,

I wandered if anyone can help me. Over this week I have purchased 2 x 4GB RAM Modules from Maplin stores in the United Kingdom (that's where I live) and I have installed them in the laptop and everytime I go to install Windows, the Laptop Blue Screens and turns itself off. I did some research before I bought the RAM on the Crucial memory website and it recommended me to buy the DDR 3 PC3-12800 RAM which is what I bought from Maplins, however this doesn't work.

The laptop is running the BIOS version of 1.08, does this matter?

Adobe After Effects always crash on startup.
It says it cannot initialize OpenGL and that I should contact the manufacturer of the Graphics adapter.

So I contact Intel because I got a Intel Hd Graphics adapter but they say the driver I already have is custom tuned for Toshiba. So I search on Toshiba but cannot really find any useful link.

Should I install OpenGL manually or can I disable it somehow without starting After Effect?
How do I installOpenGl manually?

I have downloaded the latest Graphics adapter driver from you but it doesn't help.
All I want to do is to start a popular Adobe product so I believe many people have this problem.

Answer:OpenGL driver for Toshiba Satellite C660-1J2 ?

OpenGL is a standard API for writing software for 2D or 3D computer graphics.
OpenGL is an open source product but DirectX is released by Microsoft and mostly DirectX is part of the graphic card driver and not OpenGL.

However, you cannot ?download and install? OpenGL to use it within the graphic card driver? the OpenGL needs to be implemented in the driver?

Mostly it?s done by graphic card manufacture.
Therefore you will need to check the Intel page to get an driver from Intel which supports OpenGL because the notebook supports the Intel (HM55) HD graphics.

This link detects which driver updates are relevant to your computer and then helps you install them quickly and easily.

Good health. On the laptop TOSHIBA C 660, replaced the hard drive and, as a fact, the OS flew down (Windows 7 SP1 HB x 64). Installed not licensed, there was no way out, on the Microsoft website, to download the image failure, the key from the laptop is not suitable. Thank you.

This question relates to a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-1UX Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.

Some of the onboard keys (E, T, U, I, O, A, B, N, together with the Enter key) fail to register. All of the other keys tested so far appear to register normally.

When connecting an external USB keyboard, all keys function properly. However, when using either the onboard keyboard or the external USB keyboard, it is necessary to hold down whatever key is selected for approx 2-3 seconds in order for its character to register. This makes typing incredibly slow and is understandably unacceptable.

I've checked device manager looking for errors, but am unable to find any. The driver for the keyboard is listed as installed and working properly, and driver update says that the latest version is in already in use.

I have also scanned for viruses using Malware Bytes and Spybot, and also with the laptops own pre-installed antivirus software. All of the full system scans return a no threat found message.

I have read that the keyboards on these machines are prone to failure, which could answer why only certain onboard keys function. The fact that all keys on the external USB keyboard work would seem to confirm this. However, the fact that both onboard and external keyboard is affected by the same slow keypress might also suggest a bios problem - but as this laptop is several years old and has been working perfectly, why would bios suddenly cause this problem.

Hi mw_86 and welcome to TSG.

Have you tried an external Monitor ? I would do that first if possible and if it's display is good carry on below.

With those symptoms if that model has an Inverter I would try switching it with a known working one.
You should find some on Ebay. (I've had good luck even with used ones).

If it does have an Inverter it could be the backlight instead but that's usually much more difficult to replace.

If it's an LED model (ie no Inverter or Backlight) I would guess either the LEDs have failed or they aren't getting power from the motherboard.

Hello There,

I recently purchased a Satellite C660/C660D everything is fine, apart from one or two minor issues (which this thread is about). Firstly, The laptop was and still is littered with loads of TOSHIBA random software, below is a list:

+TOSHIBA Assist+
+TOSHIBA Bulletin Board+
+TOSHIBA ConfigFree+
+TOSHIBA Disc Creator+
+TOSHIBA Face Recognition+
+TOSHIBA Flash Cards Support Utility+
+TOSHIBA Hardware Setup+
+TOSHIBA Media Controller+
+TOSHIBA Media Controller Plug-in+
+TOSHIBA Online Product Information+
+TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator+
+TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator Reminder+
+TOSHIBA ReelTime+
+TOSHIBA Service Station+
+TOSHIBA Supervisor Password+
+Toshiba TEMPRO+
+TOSHIBA Value Added Package+
+TOSHIBA Web Camera Application+

Is there a pre made ISO recovery image somewhere or do I have to make my own, because if I decide to unisntall some of these programs I might need it at a later date?

The second issue is with the TOSHIBA Accessiblity application which shows the FN keys, it does not seem to start. It worked the first day then I disabled all TOSHIBA applications from startup and I get the following error: "Registry is missing or may be broken.", I dont know why!

I have tried cleaning the registry, so the registry isnt broken.

*Thanks in Advance*

Answer:Satellite C660 - TOSHIBA Accessibility Error

Hi Humza,

I?m happy to hear that you?re an owner of Toshiba notebook too and you discovered the forum here. We can discuss everything about Toshiba notebooks, that?s interesting :)

I will try to help you to sort this out:

1.Yes, there is a premade recovery image to restore factory settings with all driver and tools on your notebook but important is you burn this image on a blank DVD using preinstalled recovery media creator. You will get a disk with an image of Windows with all drivers and tools => ?out of box settings?. So the same settings as you purchased the computer.

2.I think the FN keys don?t work anymore because you disabled some important Toshiba tools they are necessary for FN keys. For FN keys the startup items ?TOSHIBA Button Support? and ?TOSHIBA Flash Cards? are absolutely necessary so you should enable them and restart the computer.

Hey ive got a C660 here,
So my sister installed windows 8 and deleted the original windows 7 partition and now she wants to go back to windows 7 but whenever she presses F8 and goes into 'repair my computer' the toshiba hdd recovery wizard isnt there anymore. How can I get this back? The HDD Recovery partition is still there though. Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite C660 - missing Toshiba HDD Wizard

HDD recovery installation works with ?factory settings? only. After Win8 installation this will not work anymore. Recovery image can be on the HDD but it is not possible to start HDD recovery image installation.

Only way to install recovery image again is usage of recovery DVD. I presume your sister didn?t create it in the past. Now she must order original recovery DVD from

I bought a VGA cable to connect my laptop to my TV in order to mirror what ever is on my laptop screen. My TV did not pick up anything when I checked the Sources.

I opened the "Action Centre" on my laptop and selected "Project". I changed the current setting of "Duplicate" to "Second Screen Only", this caused my laptop screen to go black when the VGA cable was connected. When I disconnected the VGA cable my laptop screen came back on. This frustrating because I want to change it back to "Duplicate" but it is impossible to navigate while the VGA cable is plugged in because of the black screen.

note that when i changed it to "second Screen Only" my TV still did not pick up my laptop.

any solution for this?

Hi Tech Guys,
I have a friends laptop that I am trying to fix, their laptop HDD is failing which has been confirmed by Crystalmark and the Toshiba HDD/SDD monitor tool. I have a spare HDD lieing around which I would like to replace it with but I want to clone/backup the files first. I tried using acronis clone image but when I place the HDD in the laptop it does not recognise the new HDD, could it be due to the fact that the HDD has to be a OEM HDD set as the OS drive? I'm stuck as the laptop will not allow me to use my external HDD to backup the files manually. Not sure what to do next even tried to backup the files via my network using easy to transfer tool but it cannot find my PC please help thanks.

Answer:Solved: Toshiba Satellite C660-18C - HDD failure

When you clone with acronis, there are some things you need to do;
1 Boot the system using an acronis boot CD/flash drive. I always recommend doing a clone, image, etc from the boot disk rather than from within windows. It just removes one more layer of complexity from the task.
2 The new hard drive must be blank ie no partition info on the drive at all. You may need to zero fill the drive IF it was previously used.
3 Select source [old drive] and destination [new drive]
4 Complete the clone process and shutdown. DO NOT reboot with both drives connected.
5 Swap hd and pw ON. Make sure drive letters are correct, system boots without errors, etc.

Since this is a laptop, I would do the clone with A/C pw connected. Once finished with the clone, shutdown and remove both A/C and battery prior to swapping drives. Modern systems apply pw even when OFF so you want to be sure there is no pw applied when you are swapping drives or working on the system. Most [if not all] of the time, swapping drives in a laptop with the battery installed would not hurt anything however completely removing pw prior to working on the system is a VERY good habit to get into.

So basically i have a Satellite C660, and it came loaded with a iso on drive D. So whenever i need to clean my system i can just use the iso from drive d and it will be like new again. However i hate all this toshiba bloatware it installs and all other stupid stuff, so i was wondering if i got a windows 7 disk, and like booted the laptop up from the disk, and installed windows 7 from it without all the stupid stuff, would everything still work as normal? or what?

Answer:Satellite C660 - Can I use own Win7 without Toshiba bloatware?

Generally speaking you can do with your notebook whatever you want and nobody force you to use preinstalled stuff. You can install own Win7 version and if you install all necessary drivers it will works without any problems.

Please note: for this own Win7 version you must have valid licence for product activation and before you start installation create recovery DVD for recovery image back-up. After your Win7 installation you will not be able to start recovery image installation from HDD.

What I do, and can also recommend to you and all other people, is preinstalled OS optimization. Use original Win7 but remove all stuff you don?t need. After doing this you will have original, activated OS that will run much faster and without some ?useless? stuff.

Ok so I have searched the internet high and low for answers so before replying, please read what I have already been through.

I am currently using an Asus A54C, I reformatted my entire computer because I needed a new start (yes i backed up what I wanted on an external HD), now I've realised that before it gets to this Setup is Starting Services (SiSS) screen I must press F9 and I started the installation through my whole HD, it goes through a process that takes roughly 30 minutes before I can do anything.

Now it's all fine and I have no problems until I turn off my computer and then start it up again, it goes to the SiSS screen.. I've tried to avoid restarting my computer by just hibernating it but if I do that, I go to type in my administration password and it says I don't have access, and restarting the computer gets rid of that problem but then I have the SiSS problem again.

Surely there is a way I don't have to restart my computer everytime and wait for the 30 minutes installation to happen, is there a way fix this? have I deleted something I'm not quite sure.

I have no installation disk, no installation USB.. and yes I have search around the internet for the answer for the past hour so I'm not expecting anyone to get it straight away, but if you have any idea please let me know. I'm fairly good with computers so if you tell me where to go I won't be asking any questions on how to get there.

Hi a friend of mine has an ACER extensa 5235 laptop, it did not come with any recovery discs, and has a built in recovery management tool. By pessing shift + F10 at bios startup this brings up the acer erecovery tool, there are 2 options one to set back to full factory settings and one that says that the operating system will be set back to factory settings. I have tried both methods several times and it says recovery succesful, it then reboots and after loading as far as 'setup is starting services' it hangs and nothing more happens. The HDD light is showing that the HDD is still active. I have even left it on all night, but it sticks at that point. Any suggestions ? Hardware is all ok on laptop

This might be a long post, so kindly bear with me.

Up until today morning, I was running Windows 10 but it started having the following problem today

I turned on my pc and it froze right after it passed the Blue windows logo screen. A black screen appeared with no cursor.

I rebooted the pc (through the reset button) and everytime it got stuck at the black screen and then rebooted on its own. After a few rounds of black screen and reboots, I got the advanced repair options but it couldn't repair anything.

A very few times that it did manage to go boot and go to the desktop, it froze and didn't let me open any files or folders. Also when I mouse over the files, a black box appears around the icons and the file names appear garbled

I haven't installed anything lately that might cause this to happen.

I even tried to reset my pc but it didn't solve the problem, so i decided to clean install Windows 7.

The copying of files and everything went fine, tge pc restarted, ran a CHKDSK on its own and after that it got stuck in the "Setup is starting services" screen.

I have used this same Windows 7 CD to install windows several time before, so I know it's not a problem with the Windows CD

Kindly advise what could be the problem here. FYI, I am running windows on a Crucial MX100 SSD

Please advise

First of all, I've scoured the web for the answer to my problem, and the similar 'fixes' on these forums did not work for me at all.
My problem is is that my mom had a virus transfer to my computer through our network. My mom promptly dealt with the virus on her computer before it was too late.
The virus quickly disables all of the services (and putting restrictions on them so I cannot resume them) that are running on your computer. It also disables all anti-virus software. Needless to say, this is a pretty severe virus.
I was able to run Windows in safe-mode until I attempted to do a re installation of windows. When I did that, everything was going fine until the installation froze at 'Completing installation'. I was forced to shut off the computer by holding down the power button. When I restarted the computer, it went on to say that I needed to continue the installation. Okay; fine. Then it got to the 'Setup is starting services' screen, followed by the 'Windows could not complete the installation' or something. Then it restarts my computer automatically, and just repeats itself. I cannot boot my computer in safe mode, or 'normally' without getting the same error message. Even if it did let me boot my computer 'normally', nothing will respond/work because the virus has already done too much damage to my computer. 'System repair' does not work either.
Things to note:
I don't know the exact model of my motherboard, but I know that it is ASUS.

Hi   to BC
First up please wait a day or so others may reply with less drastic options than mine.

My goal right now is to just completely reset my computer, lose everything, and just reinstall windows from scratch.

Ok. The drastic option.
You could try Gparted Live, Format the HDD and try installing Windows again. Once booted to Gparted live delete the partition and create a new NTFS partition, Then run the Windows installer. This may or may not fix your problem.
While you are in Gparted live you could try and recover any Documents and Photos before formating, Just copy them over to a USB stick, And put it to one side, The Malware Response guys can advise you on cleaning the USB stick latter on if needed, This way at least you have a copy of the files.

GParted enables you to easily manage your disk partitions:
Create partition tables, (e.g., msdos or gpt)
Create, move, copy, resize, check, label, set new UUID, and delete partitions
Enable and disable partition flags, (e.g., boot or hidden)

Hi Folks,

A colleague passed me his poorly laptop (the Toshiba C660-18C of the title) as he is unable to connect to the internet after the re-installation of Windows 7 HP 32-bit.

Story so far...

His computer was slow - full of junk and stuff - so he asked me if I had a Win 7 disk for him to start again with a clean install.

I provided him with a disk and the re-installation went without a hitch - except now there aren't any drivers for the Ethernet NIC or WiFi and so he is unable to connect by either wired connection or wireless.

I've had a look and can't figure out what the problem is.

Device manager doesn't give any info - nothing like 'Realtek PCIe EE Family Controller' or 'Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC' that appear on my wife's Toshiba C660. Also there is no 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter' (not sure if that is needed). There is no description at all of the hardware.

I have found from the Toshiba UK website the following drivers and installed them, but still no joy.
The Network Device ID Registry Setting Tool, Realtek Semiconductor Corporation LAN Driver, Toshiba Wireless LAN Indicator and Toshiba Hardware Setup.

I went with the Realtek drivers as the Toshiba website lists these as 32-bit. The NICs may be Atheros but the only drivers I could find for them were 64-bit (will they still work on a 32-bit OS?) - and these were on Toshiba Australia's support site.

Several websites have links for what seem to be the correct drivers - but t... Read more

Setup is starting services.

Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation.

About one month ago I decided I wanted to have a clean install of windows 7 on my acer machine. I did this by using an acer made pre-installed program. It claims to be very straightforward, all you have to do is click a button and they will reinstall windows 7 for you and even back up all your data , so that after the clean install you don't lose a thing. Sounded great but in reality it has stopped my notebook from working.

I am now in a circle-jerk of the error message I stated in the beginning of this topic. Once my computer restarts it just gets me the same error message again.

I tried booting from a bootable USB-key with the windows 7 iso downloaded from official sources. But this did not do anything from me. I also went to acer support in my city. They offered me to fix it. All they had to do is copy all the info of my hard drive I wanted to keep and do a fresh install of windows 7. Would take them 3 hours. This is the easyiests option for me. But problem is I live in China and I don't trust those tech support guys for good reasons. I went there with my laptop, the tech-support guy put in a usb-key and started up my computer. It started some kind of diagnostics. After 20 minutes of this he stopped the diagnostics and started running some chinese software on my computer. Presumably booting from the USB-key. After I decided to install Windows 7 on my computer, it worked fine until the system restarted twice (it was recommended by Windows 7 setup installation), then when it was at "Completing Installation" the system got a blue screen, I was pissed a little, but when it said: SETUP IS STARTING SERVICES and after 5 seconds the setup of Windows 7 told me to restart the system to resume installation. After I clicked "OK" the system restarted and it was the same story: SETUP IS STARTING SERVICES and the error popped, AGAIN. What should I do?

Thanks in advance,

Are you getting similar symptoms when you boot into safemode(f8 on reboot). Are you wanting to save any data/files ?? if not then you can restore your machine back to factory (out of the box state) settings by pressing and holding down the zero key, release the key as soon as the recovery windows opens, you will be prompted with a few options the one you want to pick is 'box state' this process can take quite a while so be patient, also before doing you MUST make sure you have NOTHING plugged into your machine.. i.e .. mice/flashdrives etc...

So one evening my laptop randomly restarted itself and upon logging back in I found that I could not run almost any of my programs (.exe files). I tried checking for anything unusual in the registry but found nothing. In task manager when I clicked a program or attempted to run it in various ways I would see it pop up for a second before it got killed.

Finding no way of fixing it online I decided I would attempt the factory restore option that comes with the laptop in the system recovery that places all your documents in a C:Backup file. But nearing the end of this an error came up saying 'setup is starting services', which says to restart the computer to continue. But I can no longer get it past this screen. I've tried rebooting it in safe mode as well.

Any help is much appreciated! I don't even particularly mind if I lose my information at this point I just need a working laptop...

Hi, my laptop wouldn't start up and came up with an error. I went back to windows when it was first purchased so I wouldn't lose my files too. Now when I start up it says "Setup is starting services" and after about 5 seconds it comes up with the error:
"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.

Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

The problem is whenever I click "OK" and it restarts it just comes back with the same error. It used to be a different error, Windows could not complete the installation for some reason that I cant remember. That also put me in this boot loop.

I just want to find out how to fix this so I can go back to all my files that are very important. I cannot lose these files or my life will be over!

Answer:Re-Installing windows - Setup is starting services then error.

You should always back up your files externally as well as make your Recovery Disks or save a Backup Image, so that if Win7 becomes irreparable you can reimage it and put your files back.

Works through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot which include how to copy out your data externally which I would do first if you have data you cannot risk losing.

Any advice please!

Hi buddy,

Have you installed all drivers for your notebook? Missing driver like chipset or something else could cause this error.

Also install Value Added Package as Administrator. An user account with without administrator rights will not help you. Last but not least unzip all files before you start the installation.

Toshiba Satellite C660-1r1
Windows 7 sp1
Avast Antivirus (free version)

When I start a program (eg. Sonos controller) on my laptop my mouse pointer stops working. It doesn't happen with all programs! When I go into device manager, my synaptic touchpad is working and my hid mouse is also working. When I press ctrl - alt - del, the pointer can move again but when I go back it stops again. I do have a work around this isn't a solution

When I log off my windows account and log in again, it will fix the problem. When I start a program again the pointer will freeze again.
I did a full system virusscan and a pre start up virusscan and my notebook is virus free.
I uninstalled the mouse and synaptics drivers en reinstalled them but that didn't work. I added a new windows account but that didn't work.
Pressing the keycombo FN + F9 doesn't have any effect.
I'm kind of at the end of my ideas....

Can anybody help!!

Answer:Satellite C660 - mouse pointer stops working when starting program

When I start a program (eg. Sonos controller) on my laptop my mouse pointer stops working. It doesn't happen with all programs!

Does this issue happen using the touchpad only or did you notice the cursor freezing using the external USB mouse too?

Does the notebooks touchpad works properly without loading and using such 3rd party software?
For example, does the touchpad works using Microsoft office (Word, Excel, etc…) or browsing in internet using IE or Chrome?

My guess is that the preinstalled 3rd party application could affect the touchpad functionality.

Sorry I wasn't exactly sure where to post this thread

I looked up how to remove this warning that keeps coming up on this forum earlier and followed the procedure someone posted about renaming a file called TWARNMSG.EXE. i couldn't find that file, and as the problems and the make of laptop were slightly different, I thought I'd post my issue.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-16W and I have a message that keeps coming up every ~20 seconds headed "System Warning" and reads: "Warning: A problem with the cooling system has been detected. (Next Line) Please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service."

I have had this warning coming up for months and tolerated it but it has gotten worse and annoyed me for the last time. I can hear the fan, and the computer is not over heating. No other issues arise like the computer slowing down, it just gets in the way of what I am doing, like typing right now. As I have typed, it's already popped up 6-7 times.

Please help soon, this is preventing me from gaming and even other things by now.

Answer:Repetitive cooling system warning -- Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-16W

I'm going to have your thread moved to a more appropriate forum. Please stay subscribed.

Note: TWarnMsg twarnmsg.exe > Toshiba System Warning Function for Windows 98, Me, 2000 - provides notification dialog when the cooling fan stops ...

This is a valid program, but it is up to you whether or not you want it to run on startup.
There are some rogue programs that give fake alerts or 'critical system messages.' But this isn't one of them. It is specific to the brand of system you have. It might be that someone in the other forum has another idea- but my suggestion would be to take it to a show and have them open and clean out the box.

Aspire one netbook with windows 7

model PAV70

i tried to restore it to factory settings (backed up to C file)

it went fine untill it got stuck in a loop saying it couldnt install windows and had to be restarted. i would restart and it would go to the same error over and over

then i tried to use the recovery discs (unsure of how to use them) i hooked up the external drive and powered on but no options came up although the disc was making noise as if activated. i left that going all night but no change.

NOW i power on and only get SETUP IS STARTING SERVICES

i have tried F8, F11, F12, ALT + F10 and nothing

the only thing that worked was shift+F10 (i tried ms00be but got nothing) (i did regedit/child comp/1 changed to 3 etc but nothing)

the only way i can get a response from the computer is SHIFT + F10 or if i press the space bar to "pause system resume" this gives the option to "continue" in which its back to being stuck on the SETUP screen or i could press "delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" SO should i try to delete the data and go to boot menu? if so where do i go from there?

So I have Windows 7 64 bit on my HP HDX 18, and I did a FRESH install, I did not upgrade. Now I'm trying to install iTunes 9.0.2 64 bit and it starts to install and gets to the part of "Starting Services..." and then comes up with an error saying "service 'apple mobile device' (apple mobile device) failed to start. verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services".

I've tried many times to delete everything of apple's and itunes from my computer thoroughly, rebooted, and tried again. But I keep getting the same error time after time, I've even tried the Windows 7 32 bit iTunes and it's the same thing.

Can anyone help?

I've tried suggestions around this forum but everyone had a different reason to why it came to this error so i'm trying to explain how i got to this error because this is really stressing me out.

I'm having problems with my windows 7 ultimate x64 install on a toshiba satiellite laptop..My laptop was restarted right when I was in the last stages of Completing installation and now I'm stuck in a loop "starting setup services" and then after there is another error saying " The computer restarted unexpectedly........installation cannot proceed...... click OK and the restart the installation".

At this point I press shift + f10 to open command prompt and try diskpart because I had to do the same thing on the laptop I'm on now. It worked on this one (an HP). But on the toshiba I get to "list disk" and well there is ONLY Disk 0. I "select disk 0" and it says it's selected and I type "clean"/"clean all" but I have an error "virtualdisk service error: clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot....etc".

-i cant do clean install/format that i need to do or is there another way besides diskpart?

-my windows disk is one i created from an iso. it's not burned into the DVD RW (could this be the problem?) i read somewhere that to install win 7 on a toshiba it must be burned.

Answer:Clean install win 7 x64. Starting setup services loop/DiskPart error.

The problem is you're not booting the installer to do the Clean command. Follow these steps which overcome almost all install failures and will set you up for the perfect install shown in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for da... Read more

I need some help for my sons laptop which is the Satellite Pro C660-1LR.

I have purchased a new hard drive which is installed..however as you have guessed i have no access to reinstalling a OS, this laptop runs on windows 7.

I am not really tech savvy so if anyone can advise me please make explain in idiot proof format!! I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-1LR - New HDD but no recovery disc

> I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.
Problem is that you don't have many options about that.
If you want to have ?factory settings? again you need recovery installation disc. You can order it on Of course it is not for free but, in my opinion, definitely the best solution.

You can buy Microsoft installation disc and install own version. You must buy valid licence for it.
In this case you must install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities additionally one by one.

Just in case that you can get this Microsoft installation and licence for free you can save some money.

Believe me the best solution is original recovery disc order.

I ordered a set of 2 Toshiba recovery CD's and received them yesterday in order to fix this laptop from a Windows breakdown...

The problem arising at start up is that Windows 7 isn't starting up plus that the hard disk doesn't show in the BIOS (the DVD-drive does) and after the boot sequence the following message comes up: ?Reboot and select proper boot device or insert root media in selected boot device? Someone suggested the drive is broken or the cables to the same detached or lose.

The owner says, that the error first appeared after McAfee offered to "remove 15 errors found on the disk". The laptop has never been opened.

When running the recovery CD 1 the boot sequence starts the recovery but initially shows two pop-ups that indicate that the hard disk cannot be found.

First error message - ERROR: IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO \\. \PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.

Second error message says something like - There is no access to disk #0 or the RAID configuration isn't correct!

After accepting both messages the prompt hands out the error that also appears in this thread...

Answer:Recovery CD's do not recover Satellite C660-1WN

(...continued from first post...)

Left to be said is that I also - before I ordered the recovery CDs - ran the second diagnostic DOS tool in the first table to check the disk and got the following report...

- HDD power cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD interface cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD master-slave setting is incorrect

...and equally that no disk could be detected.

My question is now..., what is wrong here? Is it the physical disk that might be the problem? Is it the software? MBR? Can the latter be restored by some command in the prompt? If, then how? Would it be easier to erase the whole disk and then use the recovery CDs? Or won't this work since the recovery CDs can only work with the recovery information on the disk (I assume that this information is only physically on the disk not on the recovery CDs, isn't this correctly understood)?

I am looking forward to any input and help. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me or knows what to do. I have Satellite C660-15r it was turned off properly but when put back on it came up with start windows normally as if it has been interrupted, I clicked ok to that but instead of loading it has gone to do some sort of recovery only it hasn't been able to complete this and instead has said there is nothing to recover.

It is know stuck at this and will not go any further says to get system admin to log in however its not allowing to log in or do anything apart from shut down and restart, I have been trying to factory reset but it will not work at all I have tried many attempts with 0 and other options i have been told this doesn't work but I can get up f2 and f8 on load up all that works ok but I cannot find any option to be able to factory reset. it gives me options to recover but they take me to the same screen with no improvements and safe mode will not work.

I hope someone can help me I will be so grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Satellite C660-15r stucks and no recovery possible

At first I must say that recovery option is available if notebook has ?factory settings?. After reading your posting I don?t know if you still use original OS installation that you got with your notebook or maybe OS preinstalled on your own.

I presume you didn't create recovery media (DVD) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator, right?
In your situation usage of recovery disc could be easiest way to fix this and install original recovery image.

Can you please post exact notebook model?

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum:

Being the idiot I am, I changed my WIndows Login password and since I use very long passwords, I have no idea what I changed it to. Guessing is out of the question.

So I powered on my laptop while holding the 0 key, which brought me to the Windows Boot Manager screen. I pressed F8 on Windows 7 for advanced options and opted for 'Recovery Mode' as I have used this in the past to install the OS from scratch.

It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.

Any advice on what I can do?

Answer:HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

On this step you must enter your Windows login name and login password. Without right password you will not be able to start HDD recovery installation.

There is second option to install recovery image. You can do it now using recovery DVD. Have you created it using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator?

My laptop recently got knocked over, after impact the screen went to a zigzag pattern in weird colors with a high screeching noise. The only way to turn it off was to take the battery out. After trying to start it up it worked fine and loaded correctly, soon after i loaded my game and ran around a bit windows froze and I had to restart the laptop. It loaded fine again but before i could open any programs windows froze again.. So I restarted it and this time it wont go past the 'Loading Windows' icon. I then figured maybe the hard-drive had detached from the impact. I checked the hard-drive and took it out and put it back in, checked the memory which all seemed fine. So I shut down the laptop again, just to get stuck at the loading screen again. I then turned it on and opened system repair. I went through the System Repair and Restore Windows to an Earlier Time which afterwards said 'I cannot manually fix your computer please send this report.' At this point I've given up, so I've resorted to the Windows 7 Home Premium installation disc. Now when i start the computer off the disc I enter the Language(English), then hit install. Now it's at a blue screen with 'Setup is Starting...' for about 2 hours..

Answer:Toshiba OS failure to re install stuck on 'Setup is Starting'

Test the HD with the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, followed by a full Disk Check from Win7 disk Command Line in System Recovery Options.

Then test your RAM - Test with Memtest86+.

If these are OK then Troubleshoot Windows 7 Installation Failures - Windows 7 Help Forums.

I have tried to restore a Satellite C660 to factory settings due to it be extremely slow to start up.

Using the Toshiba original recovery discs the process gets partway through and then gives the following messages...

Be sure disc is clean.

I have created numerous recovery DVD on several Toshiba notebooks and have never noticed something like this. I have used DVD-R discs only and brands were Verbatim or TDK.

Unfortunately I cannot give you answer what does this message means but you must try to repeat DVD creation. If possible try with TDK.
If the same happen again I recommend you to recovery your notebook using HDD recovery option and try to create recovery discs again.

Sorry but I don?t see any other possibility at the moment.

If your notebook was delivered with 64bit version you can create recovery disc for this preinstalled version only. With other words, recovery image saved on recovery partition will be saved on empty DVD disc. Nothing more than that.

If you want to use 32bit OS you must check if your notebook model is supported for it and install own version.

A month ago I purchased a Toshiba C660-1FE. After three weeks my HD broke down. I bought a new HD from Western Digital and replaced the broken HD. As I did not make an recovery image of my HD, I had to order the Product recovery discs off the Toshiba website (3 discs, of which disc 1 and 3 were the only one's required for installation).

Now, I have the problem that my laptop keyboard does not work. I am currently using a USB keyboard and mouse to replace my keyboard and touchpad of the laptop.

The laptop keyboard works fine in BIOS. Therefore, I hope it's just a driver problem.

I have:

tried finding and installing lots of drivers on from the toshiba website, no result.
tried changing settings in the bios (usb enable/disable).
tried to fix the problem by re-installing the entire computer again several times.

The keyboard seems to work until windows loads. When the system is starting up I can press caps lock and num lock and the green lights come on. This all stops working once the windows startup symbol appears.

Perhaps a second problem in the device manager: under the display-adapter, 2 subcategories have exclamation marks: it says Mobile Intel(R) 4 series express chipset family twice! I can't seems to fix these with any drivers I can find either. When I check the settings I have this message (google translate since it was in dutch):

Answer:After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Keyboard works in BIOS? this means that the keyboard hardware should be ok and the connection between the motherboard and keyboard is established.

So what could be wrong? Keyboard driver?
Hmm? the keyboard driver is a part of the Windows OS and is installed automatically while OS installation?
I would recommend following:
Go to device manager and extract the point Keyboard.
There you should see something like ?standard PS/2 keyboard?
If you will see a red cross near this device, then this means that the keyboard is disabled.
Usually you should be able to enable this again (in device manager).
If there is no red cross, then I recommend deleting this keyboard from the device manager list?then reboot the notebook. Usually the OS should recognize the removed device automatically and should install the driver too.

Check this.

By the way: it could be possible that you have received a wrong Recovery disk? this could explain the issues after the recover procedure?

Hi folks,

Posting this question for my neighbour as he now has no internet access as laptop not working - Satellite C660 running Win7.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.
