Preferred Solution: Satellite U940-117 / How recovery default partition

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite U940-117 / How recovery default partition

No. If you didn't create recovery USB you have problem. With other words you must order recovery media from Toshiba.

Recovery image cannot be downloaded.

Hi.

I have a Satellite U940-12C netbook, really niiiiiice but i'd have some problems with the OS and initial configuration. Finally i got the Recovery DVDs free from Toshiba (as it was not my fault, but a software one), but now i have some mess here and there. So i request wisdom from you!

Initially, i tried a Recovery with the preinstalled software that didn't work, and just formatted my HDD. After that, i wrote Toshiba, that finally sended me the DVDs. But in between, i needed the PC, so i formatted all the partitions and installed a clean version of Windows 7.

Now that i have the Recovery DVDs, i want to install them. And i want my laptop to be as factory default. In order to do that, and all to work right (SSD caching, Intel Rapid, RAID...), i NEED to know what the right partitions of HDD and SSD are and how are they configurated (NTFS, primary... don't know really!).

I would be very grateful if someone with a Satellite with a HDD+SSD (32 GB) configuration could tell me. You could check this in Disk Management of Win 8 (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management)...

Also: i want to install my Windows 8 in UEFI mode. But i can't boot from a USB if i don't disable UEFI and set CSM boot mode. What are the steps to install and boot Windows 8 in UEFI mode??

All the answers will be very appreciated! Thank you very much!!

In my case the disk management contains this info:

*Disk 0*
Basic
698.64GB

First partition System Reserved: 350MB NTFS Healthy (system active primary partition)

Second partition C: 698.29GB NTFS Healthy (Boot Page file, crash dump, primary partition)

*Disk 1*
Basic
29.82GB
Online

D: 29.82GB NTFS Healthy (primary partition)

Dear madame/sir,

I have a question about a crashed U940-11C.

The laptop crashed after being shut down during recovering procedures from Windows. I think Windows is damaged, therefore the laptop won't start up again. When turing the laptop on the following message is shown: reboot and select proper boot device. See following image:

The files on the hard drive are very valuable to me, therefore the hard drive cannot be reset before I recovered the files. I tried recovering the files by booting Ubuntu from an USB-flash drive. Ubuntu started without any difficulties. The problem is that Ubuntu is not able to find the Windows hard drive. At starting Gparted the following errors occurred:

1. Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? :

2. The backup GPT table is not at the end of the disk, as it should be. This might mean that another operating system believes the disk is smaller. Fis, by moving the backup to the end (and revmoving the old backup)? :

3. Not all of the space available to /dev/sdb appears to be used, you van fix the GPT to use all of the space (an extra 39007920 blocks) or continue with the current setting? :

Hi

I suggest you use the disks-tool in Ubuntu to mount your Windows partition.
If the partition is corrupted from an aborted recovery (or other reason) you will need to invest a lot of time and effort to succeed salvaging your data.

Hello. My laptop came with Windows 8, but I upgraded to 8.1 and then to 10. However, I wanted to return it to its original state, since it worked better for me. But the recovery partition was no more, so I ordered a recovery media USB, which came today.

However, no matter I try, everytime I try to boot from the USB, the computer ignores it and boots Windows 10 instead. I don't know what to do, so please lend me a hand. Thank you.

Answer:Satellite U940-108 ignores recovery media

I finally managed to boot from the USB and install Windows.

Hi.

I have a Satellite U940-12C netbook, a software fault cause a format of the HDD and the SSD. Finally i got the Recovery DVDs free from Toshiba (as it was not my fault, but a software one), two recovery DVDs.

And that's all I have: a clean Satellite, without recovery partition or any data in HDD or SSD; and the two recovery DVDs. Since my laptop has not a DVD drive, and I have not an external one, my question is simple: how can I make a booting recovery USB pendrive using the data stored in the recovery DVDs??

If anyone can help... Thanks!

Answer:Satellite U940-12C: How to make Recovery USB pendrive having just 2 DVDs

>how can I make a booting recovery USB pendrive using the data stored in the recovery DVDs??
In my opinion this isn?t possible.
You cannot move simply the data from the 2 DVD disks to the USB pen drive. I think this will not work.

In your case you will need to use an external USB CD/DVD drive in order to recover the notebook using the both disks.

When I first got this product, before opening I thought that all the 500gb would go to the first partition, but then I saw that the recovery partition has half of the 500gb just for recovery which is unnessecery.

But I had no problem with this at the time, and used the recovery partition(after saving to a disk) for ubuntu so I could have a dual boot.

But now I've came to realise that the games I'm downloading are taking more and more room up on my C drive. The problem I have is that I can shrink my recovery partition and enlarge the C drive.

Does anyone know a work around?

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-225: Shrinking recovery partition englarge C partition

You will need an 3rd party software to shrink the recovery partition and to add the free space the existing C partition.
I would recommend you an freeware tool called Gparted

But before you would start doing this, create a recovery disk!
This is advisable in case you would try to set the notebook back to factory settings using such disk.

I have Windows 8 Professional installed on my laptop. The drive is formatted GPT. I checked using the Disk Management utility in windows today and found my Recovery partition was 300MB in size. This Recovery partition is created by windows 8 during installation.

What I want to know is whether the 300MB size is normal or not.

cheers

Answer:Default Recovery Partition size in Windows 8

My understanding is that 300mb is the minimum. (Mine is 340mb.). There should be other partitions as well: a EFI system partition (minimum 100 Mb) and a reserved partition (128 Mb). See here.

Hey guys. I've read a lot from this site and the tutorials and solutions are amazing. so I have decided. somewhat, maybe you can help me. here's the scenario:

I have a windows tablet ,ASUS Vivotab M81C non-signature edition (Please google for the specs), upon downloading all the necessary updates, I upgraded it to windows 10, after the long upgrade I noticed that windows 10 removed my oem recovery partition. so I immediately reverted back to windows 8.1

When I checked my partitions, I see that it was restored and labeled "healthy" I thought everything is ok until I decided to reset the tablet (in windows 8.1 already). But then reset/refresh and even create recovery drive didn't work. the refresh/reset menu said "Couldn't find recovery environment" while Create Recovery Drive said "A required Partition is missing" Itried booting from an iso with same architecture and tried reset/refresh but nothing worked. So I decided to fresh install the OS using the ISO I found here :https://www.pcsteps.com/210-download...ree-microsoft/ and thankfully I hadn't encountered any activation issues with the ISO. I used Custom Install, deleted all partitions EXCEPT the default Recovery Partition and proceeded. Installed all the drivers and got the tablet working again.

I now decided to copy the recovery partition and it was successful though I still didn't delete the one in my HD. Now I want to restore my tablet back to its factory default using the recove... Read more

Answer:ASUS default recovery partition not working

Although it says "healthy" that doesn't mean all the data is still there. Installing Win 10, even though you backed out could have corrupted the recovery partition or the boot record. For example, on a Dell with a recovery partition installing some other OS invalidates using the recovery partion to restore and in those cases a restore/reinstallation requires discs or USB drive to install OS then needed drivers.

Hello, I've used the recovery media creator to create a USB flash drive recovery media.

If i then use that to restore the Windows 7 installation onto a new hard drive (as SSD) will that drive itself have the recovery media partition on it?

So if I then lose the USB stick could I restore again by holding down zero when powering on?

Or does it recover the Windows partition and nothing more?

Thank you

Talk about confusing. Does anyone know how to get a Toshiba C660 working after the HDD has failed and the owner has stupidly NOT followed the instructions to make a recovery disk. Will the recovery disk ( if you purchase one from Toshiba ) rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition and install windows 7 (original OS ) and accept the product key printed on the Windows License attached to the base of the laptop. I have read a number of suggestions but these have been deemed incorrect by others.

Surely Toshiba must have a way of sorting this problem.

Do they read these posts ?

Answer:Satellite L660-12Q - Would recovery disk rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition

Hi buddy?

I don?t think that this is really complicated? I could find all info regarding the recovery procedure in the user manual?

The recovery disk has to be created at the first day of purchase? its recommended to create one in cases something would be wrong with the HDD.

The recovery disk contain an image?. Image is a package containing Win system, drivers, tools and all the stuff preinstalled on the notebook.
You purchased the notebook and the system was already activated so you don?t need the key placed at the bottom of the unit.
Furthermore the usage of recovery disk formats the whole HDD (partitions too) and set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.

There is also another option to recover the notebook called HDD recovery. This HDD recovery does not need recovery disk. Usage of HDD recovery would format ONLY the C (system) partition.

I just purchased a brand new laptop and have realised that it didn't come with a recovery disc or a recovery partition on the hard drive.

Just wondering if my hard disc crashes how am i supposed to reinstall windows?
The laptop i bought is a Toshiba satellite L500 and is only a few weeks old.

If anyone could help on the subject would be very much appreciated.

Answer:Satellite L500 - No recovery disc or recovery partition - How to reinstall?

Hi

Normally if I buy a new notebook or other product I read the user manual firstly. So I would recommend that you should the same before you ask different questions.

The point is that you have to create a Toshiba recovery disk yourself. Therefore start the recovery disk creator that is preinstalled on your notebook and follow the screen instructions. I recommend a high quality DVD-R medium to create this disk.

Furthermore you can reinstall Windows using the HDD recovery option. On the second partition you can find this folder that contains an image of factory settings and you can start this feature if you go in advanced boot menu and select ?repair my computer?. This is not a special partition, only a folder where the image is stored.

HDD recovery procedure is the same as Toshiba recovery disk. You get back factory settings too but the recovery disk wipes the whole HDD. The HDD recovery only the first partition.

By the way: Normally you did get this message:

+your system is equipped with hard disk recovery system. if you need to repair+
+your computer by restoring it to original factory state, you can do it directly+
+from harddisk (press F8 when you boot your computer, choose "Repair your computer"+

I recently bought a Satellite Pro L850-1UJ with Windows 8
http://www.toshiba.co.uk/laptops/satellite-pro/l850/satellite-pro-l850-1uj/

I've created a new partition (so i could use it as data room)
i.e. C: the windows system AND Z: my data

after that, i could NOT use the RECOVERY MEDIA CREATOR to create the recovery dvds
BUT the partition still exists and i can see the inside files from windows

IS IT a way to extract the files from the recovery partition or any other clue how i could fix the partition scheme so the RECOVERY MEDIA CREATOR could recognize it

Many thanks for your time...

Answer:Satellite Pro L850-1UJ: How create recovery DVDs from recovery partition

After changing HDD partitions structure it happens that ?Toshiba recovery media creator? cannot find recovery files. These files are marked with special markers that in your case cannot be found anymore.

I?m afraid now is too late to do or change anything. You are not the first one with this problem. We always write here that first step should be recovery media creation and later you can do whatever you want. You can even delete it.

Now you can just order new recovery disc at https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

hi,

I just ran into a problem during my upgarding my laptops to win 8 pro from win 7 and also win 8

2) I have discovered that my laptop which came with win 8 which i upgraded to win 8 pro with a dvd, has had the contents of the hidden partition deleted in the upgrade process [as told to me by acer][that is i can no longer go back to factory default settings ever!].The hidden partition is going to be returned to original condition. So i would like to copy the image of that hidden partition somewhere, where i can copy it back onto the hdd hidden partition should this ever happen again for whatever reason. But not onto a dvd, either a externall hdd or usb stick if its possible.

2) i have another acer laptop which i have also upgraded, but from win 7 to win 8 pro.
And it seems that the hidden partition and the factory default settings in that laptop have been untouched!! as i have just restored it back to factory condition.
But i would also like to copy the hidden partition for this one.
And i also have other laptops with hidden partitions with vista and xp.

[so win 8 will delete the factory settings in a hidden partition when it is an upgradde from win 8 to win 8 pro but not from win 7 ???

What are the ways to copy the hidden partition for ones i know how to remove the hdd and ones that i do not?? In a way that is easy to copy back to the hdd concerned.

Thanks in Advance

Answer:copy hidden partition used for recovery to factory default

DO NOT USE THE DVD TO UPGRADE, as you will make the Recovery Partition UNUSEABLE.

Use Windows 8 Pro Pack.

To upgrade Windows 8 core, you need to use the Pro Pack.
To upgrade to Pro Pack
No install files needed.
Only the Upgrade key is need.
Add Features to Windows 8

Hi, I have Lenovo IdeaPad Z500 and I wanted to ask, how can I find the recovery partition which is a hidden partition on my pc and how to recover default OS with all.

Answer:Ideapad Z500 - Finding the recovery partition & recovering default OS

Hello 09mayki09Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.Check the User Guide on the support page, that should tell you how to perform a factory reset.

Otherwise, most Lenovo units have the same steps when it comes to recovery, try the following.

Note: Please back up all your data as running this reset will delete any data on your machine1. Turn the machine off and press the recovery button which is located usually next to the power button. If you have a desktop machine you will need to power the machine back on and keep tapping the F2 key. 2. Use the arrow keys and press enter on system recovery. ( Desktop users can skip this) 3. Select ?restore from the initial backup? and then ?Next?. 4. Click ?start? and accept the warning messages. Length of time can vary depending on the speed of the machine.

Hi, I just bought an ultrabook Toshiba Satellite U940-180, and in the description of the product, in the shop's website and in the official website of the product, it says that the Satellite U940-108 has an _*illuminated keyboard*_, in order to use it in the night without light.

Hi guys,

Did anyone disassemble Satellite U940?

I have problems with the cooling fan loud noise, so I need to open and clean it.

I tried to do that but I was not able to reach the fan since I'm not that expert and I didn't want to break anything.

Is there anyone who did it so he can adivce me?

That the reason why you should not do anything. Small mistake and you can damage something. There are many small plastic holders that can be broken.

Notebook disassembling should be done by authorized personal only and following instructions from maintenance manuals.

Have you tried to reduce cooling fan activity changing settings for cooling method? You can find it n advanced power options.

I have a Satellite U940. I have had it for more than 3 years and I like it.
Last weekend I went for the free upgrade to WIndows 10 and upgraded to it from my Windows 8.1.

It works, but now I found out (perhaps I should have read it) that the Satellite U940 is NOT a supported device for Windows 10.

Why is this?

I'm considering reverting back to 8.1, but for now the Windows 10 is working for me.

What will this mean for me long term and what do people suggest?

Many thanks!

Answer:Windows 10 not supported for Satellite U940

As you probably know it is not possible to offer full support for all notebook models. On some point Toshiba and other manufacturers must make a cut and make decision which older models will not be supported anymore.

I bought a brand new Satellite U940 two months ago.

Over the past week, the fan has started to be very loud most of the time.
It might turn off for a minute, but in general it is loud. Also it can make a scraping noise at times.

According to my Toshiba Health Monitor, the CPU temperature is about 50%.
I am assuming that this is high and that is why the fan is running.

However this laptop is new - so I am not sure why the fan is loud AND why the CPU temperature is high.
I am concerned that this will cause long-term problems to a laptop that I have only had for a short period.

What can be done and how concerned should I be?

Answer:Satellite U940 - loud cooling fan

At first I must say that there is no reason for panic. Cooling system is optimized for certain hardware platform so hardware will be cooled down properly.

I don?t know how do you use your notebook but if you use it for everyday activities like office, internet or chat use it with balanced power plan and also change settings in certain power plan for cooling method. Set it to battery optimized option. It should reduce cooling fan activity.

My U940-102 will not boot today.
It was a very good notebook until I "upgraded" to Windows 10 this summer, after that the boot was slow (probably the upgrade did not take account of the SSD/HDD RAID configuration) and occasionally an update of Windows 10 would get stuck - on one occasion I saw no choice but to remove the battery, which killed the battery dead. Since then it had occasional disk glitches, then yesterday another update of Windows 10 took ages and then showed a "Recovering Disk .- may take over an hour" message. A minute later the system was up and running, but when I turned on the notebook today I got just a black screen and the fan whirring erratically plus a little disk noise, two white LEDs illuminated up front.

The good news is that:
- I have a backup of my data on an external HDU, although there are a few recent files I would like to recover from the PC
- I have a "twin" of the PC, a near identical and working U940-102 also "upgraded" to Windows 10.

So how should I proceed?
Is it likely (as I guess) that the problem is only a faulty HDU and it is worth replacing the HDU and the battery?
If it is the HDU, should I replace it with another SSD/HDD unit (which) or just a pure SSD ((which)?
Is there anything I should do or try before purchasing the new HDU?
Do I need to make an installation disk on a 16MB USB stick and if so would it be sufficient to do this from the "twin" under WIndows 10?
Am I going to have... Read more

Answer:Satellite U940-102 fails to boot

Still hoping for some help.

I created and verified a System Recovery on a flash USB stick using Toshiba Recovery Media Creator on the "twin" U940-102.
That went ok but with the flash USB stick in the faulty PC nothing happens.
Either the PC is set up to ignore USB stick during boot or I am doing something wrong.
I tried holding down the power key (after about 7 seconds the PC powers down) and then holding down zero key while
pressing power again, but it just whirs on the HDU and occasionally the CPU fan with a completely black screen.
Tried all three USB slots but no difference.

Windows 8 may be blocking BIOS entry due to Hybrid Suspend. Boot into Win8 and hold Shift while you shut Windows down, keep on holding Shift until the power light turns off.

Hello

I have a laptop Satellite U940-108. I had to replace the hard disk breakdown.
After retrieving the backup of Win 8.1 system, booting the laptop the following error: System Thread Exception Not Handled (iaStorA.sys).

This error also occurs if Win 8.1 is installed with an installation CD and then the drivers are loaded.
I updated the drivers to the latest version.

I beg your help.
A greeting.
Jordi Miralles.

Answer:"iaStorA.sys" error on Satellite U940-108

After the HDD has been removed and replaced the RAID configuration is lost and must be rebuild.
I don?t know exactly the procedure but in order to use the RAID feature which is controlled by Intel Rapid Storage technology, the RAID must be rebuild and this can be done only by authorized service provider using special tools and method.

I guess after that this error will disappear.

How can I remove RAID 0 configuration from a Windows 8 Toshiba Satellite U940?

Answer:How to remove RAID 0 from Satellite U940?

As far as I know in the past if RAID option was available it was in BIOS or preinstalled Toshiba RAID utility. It was for instance Qosmio notebook with two identical HDDs inside. I?m not sure but I think U940 doesn't have such configuration.

What do you want to do exactly?

Hi,

I just ordered a Satellite U 940-101, but didn't make the recovery USB stick.
then I couldn't entry the win 8 system.

*So I bought the recovery CDs and a external-DVD-RW.*

The problem is that I chose "*boot from the DVD-RW*", I *could not recovery the system*.

"Your PC needs to be repaired
A required device isn'y connected or cannot be accessed

*Error code oxc0000225*"

what can I do? thanks!

Answer:Satellite U940-101 can not recover using external ODD

Hi

Go to BIOS (F2) and disable the secure boot and switch from UEFI to CSM mode.
Then you could check again if you would be able to boot from external USB CD/DVD-RW drive.

To be honest I?m not quite sure if booting from external CD/DVD drive is supported by BIOS. I found just these bootable and supported devices:
USB FDD, Primary HDD, USB Memory, Network(LAN)

Hi there,

friend of mine bought the Toshiba Satellite U940-11L which had Windows 8 on it, due to certain reasons she wanted to have Windows 7 installed on it which was fairly easy.

The trouble came with installing the Symantec touchpad, after the installation of the drivers it worked for about 10-15 minutes but then it stopped working.

Tried to uninstall and install again but no luck, found couple of threads where it was suggested to remove all connected devices, remove battery and power cord.

Press the power button for 15 seconds then power it back on but still had no luck (I was not into restoring Bios default settings as I did not made any change there apart from disabling secure boot and changing UEFI to CSM which was required to run win 7 on it.)

Tried about 4 different sources when it comes to the drivers but still wont work. I checked the device in Dev. Manager but see no conflicts and it shows that the device operates fine but the issue still persists. Please note the drivers were specific for windows 7.

Please if you have any suggestions we would greatly appriciate it.

On another note I am not able to install the bluetooth there (HW ID shows as ACPI\TOS6205), I tried installing it few times but no luck as it still shows as Unknown device within Dev. Manager. The driver I am using is Bluetooth Filter Driver Package as FYI.

Also the computer is slower than it was with Windows 8, I suspect the reason for this is the fact that when install... Read more

Answer:Few issues after downgrade to Win 7 on Satellite U940-11L

Regarding the touchpad issue.
From my knowledge the touchpad should work even if the Synaptics touchpad driver was not installed. The Windows system contains own driver which would control the touchpad and provide some standard settings. Of course after the Synapatics driver installation you should get some additional options and some more touchpad features.

I would recommend you to download the touchpad driver from Synaptics driver page and to install it again: http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers

Regarding BT issue.
The notebook supports an Intel WLan card (Intel Wireless-N 2230) which supports the BT connectivity. The Bt driver filter package is ONLY necessary if you notebook would use a Atheros WLan card or Realtek WLan card. For Intel WLan modules such filter package is NOT necessary. To get the BT working, you have to install Toshiba BT stack!

Hi there

My screen was broken and I need to replace it by myself but I don't even know where to start.

Are there not any screws or something? How to remove broken screen?

Answer:Satellite U940 - screen replacement

Maybe stupid question now but why do you must replace it alone. I mean this notebook model is pretty complicated for disassembling and I?m afraid it is not so good idea to do this without knowing how to do this.

What you need is step-by-step maintenance manual but such document is not a kind of public document. I really don?t know if you will be so lucky and find someone here who can help you with this. Satellite U940 is pretty new notebook. I have it too but I cannot disassemble my and help you with this.

My advice for you is: contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask if they can help you with this and how much it costs.

Good morning,

I have a problem with my computer.
I installed a dual-boot Ubuntu/Windows 8.
I disabled the UEFI mode, in order to install Ubuntu. But now, I don't have access to Windows anymore, and I can't go to the BIOS menu to enable the UEFI mode...

I tried all the combinations possible (F2, ESC, F12, F10, F8, SUPPR, ...) and none of them open the BIOS menu.

I read on a forum that if I put my battery off, it will work, but it didn't.

How can I have access to the BIOS ? Is there any secret combination that I haven't tried yet ?

Recently I was successful in updated the Health Monitor (which ironically the Heath Monitor recommended).

An error indicated that there was "an older version installed", and I was advised to remove it first. I did this, not have no path to be automatically advised of driver and other upgrades, including the health Monitor.

It seems the Health Monitor did not save the download file - it's not in Downloads. Does it save some other place? It did not prompt me, so the location is hard-coded, wherever it is.

I only wanted to do this because a previous Health Monitor driver upgrade blew away my touchpad driver.

OK ... you'd think I would be able to download new drivers manually, right? Alas no. My part number does not seem to be acceptable to the downloads selector on Toshiba AU selector window, and likewise there is no U model above U500 in the dropdown list of models.

So many annoyances here!

Can anybody suggest how I might get the correct Health Monitor install file for my Satellite U940?

Hi,

I got a brand new Satellite U940-B484 Ultrabook.
The first thing I did was finishing the wizard, then I created the recovery media (using external DVD drive) on three 4.7GB DVD discs

We have Windows 8 Pro license, so my friend formatted the system and installed new Windows 8 Pro, he seems to be missed up with the drivers, so we decided to back to factory status to find and download the correct device drivers.

Even after we got the recovery completed we still have two issues:
Major issue: SSD drive shows only 11.22GB capacity!!
Minor issue: a device in the device manager isn't working correctly!!

Is there any logical explanation for the SSD size to go down from 32 GB to 11 GB????

The only think came across my mind was the possibility to have 2x16GB and the RAID (for some reason) changed from RAID 0 to RAID 1. But even if that is true, where on earth can I change that from?

Answer:Satellite U940 - SSD drive shows only 11.22GB

> Is there any logical explanation for the SSD size to go down from 32 GB to 11 GB????

Probably you have installed Win 8 on the SSD drive and this is the reason why you?ve got only 11GB of free space.
The notebook seems to be equipped with a 500GB HDD and with a 32GB SSD drive.

I would recommend you to check the partition table available on the SSD drive.
You can check this in Disk Management of Win 8

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

I love the quick start-up of this laptop and my understanding has always been that pressing the power button (or physically closing the computer) is all I need to do in order to put it to sleep.

I know that sleeping computers can still use a little bit of the battery, but more often than not, I'm finding that the computer isn't REALLY asleep. The screen may be dark, but LEDs near the touchpad will be lit up, and a gentle touch of the pad (or any key) immediately shows that it wasn't really sleeping.

I'm concerned because sometimes it seems like it must have been on for hours - the bottom of the computer will be warm. I've tried unplugging it to see if that will make a difference, but sometimes this just means that it will have drained the battery.

Any tips? Much appreciated!

Answer:Re: Satellite U940 keeps turning itself on and draining power

Generally speaking you are right. By default after closing the lid notebook should be set to sleep mode.
Anyway, check please power options for certain power plan and be sure that option ?When I close the lid? is set to option ?Sleep?.

Test also option ?Sleep? when you click on Power.

This would be possible if Windows 8 system would recognize the 32GB mSATA as an additional drive. I?m not 100% sure about that but I guess in case this will not be possible, you could use this mSATA SSD drive for caching.

Good day Ladies and Gents!

Just wondering if I can gain some enlightenment here - as I've googled myself into a flaccid heap over the issue I'm having!

I'm a computer technician of high renown (modest too), and most recently, a client of mine presented me with a Satellite U940 ultrabook - lovingly endowed with the SSD / Hard drive Raid 0 configuration running our beloved Windows 8.

All things following their set course - the Hitachi hard drive failed (as google tells me is to be expected).

So, I replace the hard drive with a terrific little Western Digital number, cloned sector by sector from the Hitachi, and after a not insignificant amount of cajoling with bcdedit and bootrec, I was able to get it to boot into our much loved Windows 8.

However, ever since, I'm having random BSOD's, failed cold boots, and all sorts of errors.

I've run all the regular fixes - SFC /scannow, chkdsk /r, repair installs of Windows 8, etc, but it is still jolly well unstable.

Things don't seem to be as they were with this little ol' Satellite - prior to any repairs, the Device manager showed two 'RAID 0' devices in the disk drives category, and since, it shows the individual SSD and the WD HDD.

I recently upgraded my Toshiba Ultrabook (Satellite U940 PSU6VA-00S002) from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

However, I was unaware at the time that there was quite an extensive list of procedures that I should have followed before and after the upgrade (see [http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/windows8_1-upgrade-stepbystep/]).

After the upgrade, I noticed that the computer was running slowly and the fan would never stop. I eventually discovered that the driver for the graphics card had disappeared, and so I used Toshiba Service Station to update my drivers. Now, everything seems to be running normally (except that my Wi-Fi frequently cuts out, but that was happening before the upgrade as well).

However, reading the article I linked to above, I see that I did not follow the steps correctly.
I did not uninstall any of the software listed in Appendix A prior to the upgrade, and I upgraded my drivers in no apparent order through Toshiba Service Station (rather than checking the Toshiba website for the correct sequence, as the article specifies).

So, what I want to know is: will this potentially lead to problems in the future?

Is it worth doing a factory reset and going through the upgrade process again? (I have plenty of time right now, so I can afford to do this.)

Answer:Satellite U940 PSU6VA - Upgraded to Win 8.1 without following instructions

> Is it worth doing a factory reset and going through the upgrade process again? (I have plenty of time right now, so I can afford to do this.)
In my opinion you should do this. I have U940-103 and I had plenty of time too so I?ve made small test. I?ve installed Win8.1 update without doing anything and in my case my keyboard has stopped working.
Only solution for me was original recovery installation.
After doing this I?ve installed Win8.1 update but this time following Toshiba?s instructions and everything is working perfectly now.

As I can see you gave Australian model and these instructions are on European page. I don?t know if there is some difference but I think the principle should be the same.

Hi

not sure whether to put this under 'Windows 7', Mods please move as needed.

I have a Toshiba U940 PSU6SA-02K002 ultrabook which came with Windows 8 (not Pro) and I would like to install windows 7 on it. It has a 500 GB Hitachi and a small 32GB mSATA SSD.
It is already running Toshiba's latest BIOS 1.30.

I have turned off secure boot and UEFI, can boot and start the windows 7 install from USB but it is looking for extra drivers that I can't work out. I have tried various windows 7 drivers that Toshiba had on their site for the 940 Ultrabooks but without luck. (Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, Intel Chipset Software Utility, USB 3 driver and Intel Display Driver).

I'm unziping the drivers onto a separate USB and the install is finding them ? but they don't seem to be what it is looking for.

Any suggestions or a guide? Thanks

The new Windows 8 machines have no BIOS, they use a UEFI Firmware now.

DOS media cannot boot in UEFI, you need to enable BIOS Emulation. Hold F2 to enter Setup, then disable Secure Boot, and change the Boot Mode to CSM Boot (BIOS Emulation).

Change it back to UEFI once you are done otherwise Win8 may BSOD.

Hi.

I own a Toshiba Satellite U940-12C. Due to a sequence of dreadful circumstances, i ended up with a notebook without Windows 8 and no access to the recovery partition. If there's any clue to how to access this recovery data, please tell me.

But the question is: how can i get the license code of my notebook copy of Windows 8?? Is there any way??

Thanks and bye.

Answer:Satellite U940-12C: Windows 8 license code??

If you cannot access recovery partition on regular way there is no other way to do this and recovery image saved on your notebook is useless. it is pity that you don?t have created recovery media that could be used for clean Win8 installation.

Maybe you will not believe this but license key is also useless and cannot be used for own Windows installation. This code belongs to original preinstalled version that you got with your notebook.

Best option for you is to order original recovery disc and use it for Win8 installation. You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

If you have more questions you are welcome.

Hello There,

I'm currently in the processing of wanting to perform a refresh of the OS on my laptop. When I purchased the laptop from a well known department store, it came loaded with Windows 7, despite the pre-loaded OS being Windows 8 when purchased.

I've already disabled fast shut down, as recommended elsewhere on the forum. However, after numerous shut downs and start ups, pressing all manner of combination of keys to try and get either the boot menu or bios up, I just cannot do it. It boots straight to Windows.

I've attempted to boot from an external DVD drive aswell as a bootable USB.

I've tried F2, F12, F10, ESC and DEL on boot, but nothing. With repeated pressing, with continuous hold, with the FN key, just incase... just nothing!

Could anyone provide some insight into this please?

It seems that the caching on the SSD doesn't work anymore.

Answer:Satellite U940 really slow after upgrading to Windows 10

Hello,

I had the same issue of yours on my 940-11K,

I solved it very easily just by installing the drivers for Intel Rapid Start Technology and Intel Rapid Storage drivers.

You can download the latest version from the Intel website, here's the link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...art-Technology
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/it/...-Rapid-Storage

I upgraded to Windows 10, then I installed the drivers.
After each driver installation I made a reboot.
The SSD caching should be automatically working again after these 2 steps.

You should notice an overall performance improvement right after.

Hope this will help!

What a bummer this problem with Toshiba's keyboards, same thing happened to me but with another key. Just be careful not to lose the tiny microscopic transparent piece of plastic that goes in the middle of the circular shaped cavity that remains, it is what presses onto the "touchpad" and gives the order to the keyboard to "print" the letter. I lost mine and here I am using the character map.

I really do not think you can replace one single key, I had to replace the whole keyboard, 20 bucks in Amazon

I only wish Toshiba used better materials, these seem CHEAP. With new keyboard I will be using a silicone cover for protection

After recovery, Windows does not see my second partition. I used disk management utility and it says there are 17 GB of unassigned disk space (this is my second Partition!).

Can and how can I restore it?

Tx a lot!

Answer:Partition lost after recovery - Satellite L30

Hi

It seems that the L30 was delivered with a new version of recovery cd.
I think the Recovery procedure is a little bit different as the old one with the 2 different recovery modes (standard and expert)

I know a little bit about the new recovery procedure because a friend of mine bought a new Satellite with this recovery CD. He asked me for the notebook installation and we have checked it.

It seems that you have to press the ?Setting? button after choosing the language.
If you don?t use the ?setting? button for the configuration so the recovery procedure will delete and erase everything on the HDD. I think you didn?t configure the settings and therefore all partitions were deleted.

Unfortunately I think there is no much to do. You partition was deleted and it?s not possible to bring back the lost data.

Just bought an NB550D-109.
Pretty happy with it, but I do have a couple of questions though.
Is there a reason the recovery partition, labled Data, is half the size of the drive?

Can this partition be resized to give more storage without compromising the recovery wizard?

Are all the Toshiba utilities interdependant, or can the ones that I don't use be uninstalled?
Or should I leave them installed and just disable them from startup?

Answer:Satellite NB550D-109 - Recovery partition

> Is there a reason the recovery partition, labled Data, is half the size of the drive?
To be honest I don?t understand your question. Recovery partition is about 10 GB and recovery image is about 8GB so I don?t understand what do you mean with ?half the size of the drive?.
> Can this partition be resized to give more storage without compromising the recovery wizard?
At the moment I?m not able to give you proper answer. Open ?Disc management? option, make a screen shot and let us see the partitions structure. Then I will be able to discuss about all partitions.
At the moment I can say one thing only: do not change anything. Changing partitions structure HDD recovery installation can be cancelled.
> Are all the Toshiba utilities interdependant, or can the ones that I don't use be uninstalled?
Some of them can be uninstalled but I don?t know which of them you don?t need.
Let us know which of them you want to remove from the system.

One more thing: don?t make too many experiments before you have created recovery USB disc.
Please read Toshiba?s user?s manuals and pick up info about recovery installation and recovery USB disc creation.

Hi All,

First, I have read tons of messages within this support site and then decided to open a thread.

My Notebook Model Nr: P35-S6112
Recovery DVD Code: TK143/PMAE00127012
Os: Windows Xp Home Edition

I am trying to re-install the sytem with two disk partitions but no chance. Recovery DVD (procedure) doesn't provide me any option to separate the hard disk in two different partitions as commonly known as C and D when re-installing the system.

Many support experts claim that during installation two install modes appears and (Expert Mode) allows the user to divide the hard disk in partitions.

Please let me explain how do I re-install.
A-) I simply put the recovery dvd in the drive and boot from dvd drive.

B-) First black screen comes and asks my confirmation to proceed for recovery (F1 means yes.)

C-) Then second screen appears with two warnings as decribed below.
1-) Ensure that the recovery CD/DVD is in the CD/DVD drive.
2-) Keep the CD/DVD in the drive until you are asked to rremove it.
To continue press (C). To abort press (A) ?

D-) Then I select (C) and recovery procedure starts without asking me if I wish to separate disk in different partitions. So, installation finishes and creates one whole C: drive.

I would like to know if this partioning feature is included in recovery DVD or should I pay for some additional software to separate my hard disk in two poor partitions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:How to partition the HDD using Recovery CD - Satellite P35-S6112

Hello

Recovery procedure for European notebook models is very well known to me but I believe you have an US notebook model. Unfortunately I didn?t saw how it works for US notebooks but I presume it must be similar to European models.

Anyway if you say that you can not use expert mode installation I believe you. If there is no way to use recovery media I recommend you to use Partition Magic software. It is very powerful software and using it you can manage HDD and create own partitions or change the capacity of already persisting partitions.

Good luck!

Hello,
I have a laptop Toshiba s / n xc366424r
The hard drive is dead, can not restore it with the partition recovery.
Change the hard drive is not difficult, nor reinstall windows. But how to recreate the partition recovery, and backup the system on the new hard drive?
Will the windows license installed on the old hard drive still be operational with the new hard drive?
Thank you for your answers.

I have a Sattelite L500/nb I purchased in december.
I attempted to perform a HD wipe and system recovery the other day and it seems the recovery partition has been corrupted.
On boot the system states error: F3-F100-0004 and then shuts down on 'ok'

Can I obtain recovery cd's for this system?

How do I fix this?

I recently recover my laptop L650 using the hdd method. Then somehow now I only have one partition and the recovery partition is gone.

On the first day I got my laptop, I already burned the recovery DVD. So I still can do the recovery in the future.

However, I still want my recovery hdd partition back.

Is there any procedures I can follow to make a recovery partition?

Thanks.

Answer:Satellite L650: recovery partition is gone

You cannot ?install? recovery partition.
When you use HDD method for OS installation that means recovery partition exists already and after recovery procedure cannot be deleted or removed.

It can be just ?Hidden? and you will not see it in Windows Explorer.

When you use recovery DVD the same will happen again.

Open disc management and check if one partition with around 10GB will be listed there. It must be recovery partition.

Answer:Satellite L850 and recovery partition

This recovery partition belongs to OS itself and has nothing to do with Toshiba recovery partition. If the recovery partition is deleted you cannot get it back.
Only thing you can do is to reinstall recovery image and use notebook with “factory settings” again.

In my opinion only option for you now is to order original recovery installation media - https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

Hi everyone !
I have Toshiba Sattelite C660-1J9 laptop, and it's been working fine - until a day my HDD died. Now it's producing some weird sounds on startup, and no HDD visible in BIOS. It's not a problem for me to buy new HDD and replace it, but I'd like to restore licensed Windows I had with laptop - so I need to place recovery partition on new HDD somehow. Is it possible and where I can find this recovery partition image ?
Thanks in advance !

I've noticed that many Toshiba notebooks have hidden partition and DVD Recovery either. I don't have hidden partiotion, only Recovery DVD. Does it normal?

Answer:Satellite M70 - No hidden recovery partition

Yes it is normal. For this old notebook model Toshiba didn?t create ?recovery partition?. Satellite M70 is delivered with recovery DVD.

Newest notebook models are delivered without recovery DVD media but with recovery image saved on second partition and every notebook owner can create recovery CD/DVD alone.

My Satellite L875D has the following Recovery Partitions:

450 MB
450 MB
9.36 GB

I'm assuming the 9.36 GB partition is used to create the Recovery CD's, but what are the two 450 MB partitions? Are they related to Windows 8/8.1 or something created by Toshiba for their software?

The installed OS at time of purchase was Windows 8 and has since been upgraded to Windows 8.1

I have successfully created 2 sets of Recovery CD's, is it safe to delete the partition used to create them so I can recover some disk space?

Answer:Default Recovery Partiton scheme Toshiba Satellite L875D

Yes, now when you have recovery medias you can change partitions structure and do whatever you want. One day if you want to have “factory settings” again just use created recovery discs and reinstall original recovery image.

Hi people,

I bought a new laptop just 5 days back and I am hearing a clicking sound a few seconds apart. Here's what it sounds like: [https://soundcloud.com/user506186265/toshiba-u940-clicking-sound]

Can anyone help me diagnose the sound, what is it and why is it happening?

This happens every hour or so and is disturbing in a quiet environment. Since I plan to keep the laptop for more than a few years I fear the hard drive will fail very soon. If I cannot resolve this suitably before Nov 20, 2013 I plan to return the laptop to where I bought it.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Clicking sound from hard drive - Satellite U940-100

This clicking noise comes definitely from the HDD and this sound is produced by reading heads. On some models it is pretty quiet but on some models you can hear it clearly.
In front of me I have U940-103 model and I don't hear such clicking noise, just ?normal HDD noise? and it is not so disturbing for me.

As far as I know you cannot ?control? it somehow. Maybe you can disable some settings like automatic update, back-up or HDD scan to avoid such activity.

Hi,

After replacing the hard disk in the Satellite U940-100 and installing win 7 Prof 64b the wired-lan device is not detected. According to the documentation there should be a 'Fast Ethernet LAN' in the U940.

On the support site from Toshiba there is a Realtek driver available, but no luck. During the installation a message pops up : The Realtek Network Controller was not found. The network cable is plugged in, but no led indicators. On the router the giga-bit led is blinking.

In the 'Computer Management --> Device manager' there are no Unknown devices left.

So where did the LAN go? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Frans

Hi,

I have a Satellite U940-108 since 3 months and I have a problem with the touchpad... On the left side, when I go to press to select something, _the touchpad does not let me press it_, is blocked and I can't click on the left side.

This happened from one day to another, and the part that does not respond to finger pressure is slightly elevated compared to the touckpad right side, that works properly.

I hope you can help me solve this problem, thanks.

Answer:Satellite U940 - Left side of the touchpad is locked

Hi

So just the left touchpad button is affected?
For me it looks like a mechanical part of the button is not working properly.
Cannot give you right advice without checking or touching the button.
What happens if you apply more pressure to the button?
Can you notice an difference?

In my opinion the described issue is hardware related and as you said, the unit is 3 month old? so in your case I would contact the service technician to fix the touchpad.

How can i configure the BIOS to boot multi os ssd and HDD?

I want to boot from SSD one os and other os from HDD,
When i try to do it i have windows error?

Can you help me

Answer:Satellite U940-108 - How to configure BIOS to boot dual OS from SSD / HDD

Hi

I assume you want to install the OS (which one???) on the internal mSATA 32GB SSD?
This mSATA SSD is used for caching (hybrid boot) in order to boot Windows 8 faster.

I would recommend you to install the second OS on the HDD.
For that you should create new partition which could be used for OS installation.

Then boot from the Windows installation disk and install the 2nd OS on the new created partition.

Answer:Satellite U940-11X and Win8.1 - cannot enable keyboard illumination

The keyboard illumination can be enabled and disabled within the BIOS.
Did you already check if illumination is enabled in BIOS? If not do that!

Furthermore it will be interesting how the Win 8.1 system update has been done.
Did you follow the step by step recommendation by Toshiba? Did you update all the Toshiba drivers and tools to Win 8.1 version?

The illumination can be disabled and enabled using Fn + Z combination but this will work only if all Toshiba software would be installed and updated too!

Hello,

It seems after upgrade to win10, the SSD is not being used to fast boot the laptop.
How can this be solved?

Also in tools, disk defragment, it shows all my partitions as being SSD drive thus I cannot defrag.
Why are they being displayed as SSD? I believe the main drive is a 500gb HHD and only a 32GB SSD is included.

Also in computer management the SSD drive shows only 11.22GB capacity and it is unused (all of 11.22GB free)

After Win 8.1 update you should install all the drivers and Toshiba Utilities like Toshiba system driver in the right order.
The Toshiba driver page provides the installation instruction for all Win 8.1supported models.
The installation of such drivers is very important regarding the good notebook functionality

Hi

I have a Satellite U940 on Windows 8.1.

My question is whether there is any relationship between battery wear and the health of the laptop on toshiba's PC health monitor.

At the moment my battery wear is at 50% of full capcacity according to BatteryBar
however on the health monitor it says that my battery health is good (full green).

I can only get about 1.5 to 2 hours of life out of my laptop and am just asking for help and information on whether I should buy a new battery or is there something wrong with my battery readings.

Thanks for reading this.

Answer:PC Health Monitor and Battery wear on Satellite U940

> At the moment my battery wear is at 50% of full capcacity according to BatteryBar
however on the health monitor it says that my battery health is good (full green).

The battery health shows you the battery health status and not the battery charging status.

> I can only get about 1.5 to 2 hours of life out of my laptop
The battery working time depends on notebook usage. What does this mean?
Well, running heavy performance software (games, video editing software, etc?), using bright display brightness or playing DVD movie would discharge the battery quickly.

1.5 - 2h of battery working time is not bad. But of course; sooner or later every battery needs to be replaced. It?s just a matter of time.

I see the notebook uses Win 8.
You have to perform an complete shut down to access the BIOS.

Check this document. It provides info how to change the settings in order to access the BIOS:

+Perform a complete shutdown in Windows 8+
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03EY0002R01.htm

> I have to press CTRL + SHIFT to have my keyboard properly working.
Did you check the keyboard layout settings?
For me it sounds like you are using wrong keyboard layout settings. The usage of the key combination CTRL +SHIFT changes between the keyboard layouts.

How to change this?
Go to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options
Clicked "Keyboards and Languages" tab then clicked "Change keyboards" button. Then in the "Installed services" tree list, select the keyboards you don?t want and click "Remove.
