Preferred Solution: Satellite C660-1J2 - can i use the recovery disk on another notebook

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite C660-1J2 - can i use the recovery disk on another notebook

Hi

Purchasing an Toshiba notebook with an preinstalled Windows 7 system, you have reached automatically one Win 7 license.
So you can use this Win 7 on one notebook.

I have a brand-new Satellite Pro C660. It worked fine for a day, now it won't load windows. I didn't get around to creating the recovery disks as I've only had it a few hours (yes, yes, I know, should have been the first thing I did). All the data is present (but backed up to USB just in case) and I can see the HDDREcovery folder with all data intact. However, I can't run the app to create recovery disks. Does anyone know how to extract the images and create the media using only the command prompt? (I can get into command prompt by booting from a friend's Win 7 disk). All boot options from the laptop's own drives fail. It says "Windows Failed to Load", and I try Startup Repair but it doesn't find any errors. Any help/thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro C660 - How to make recovery disk with command prompt?

Hey,

It?s not possible to create recovery disk with command prompt. You have to use the Toshiba recovery media creator on Windows.

Now it?s too late for you but you can order such a disk here:

Please can anyone help. I tried using my recovery disks to restore my notebook when it kept failing to start properly. The disks did not work so I purchased a set of disc from Toshiba on this website. I still have the same problem.

Is it the hard drive failing or something else?

If I purchase a new hard drive will the recovery disks work if the hard drive is not exactly the same as the one that came out?

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery disk fails error 1117

Hi

Did you think about the HDD?
It could be a HDD malfunction that does not allow you to install the system.

I recommend checking the HDD for some possible issues.

There is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test. You can use it for HDD check.
Google simply to get the software.

On a number of occasions the laptop suddenly shuts down before it has fully finished restoring the recovery disk.
I have a suspicion it may be due to getting warm. If so, is there anything which could be too sensitive to heat and therefore tripping? It does get a little warm but no more than my other laptop which doesn't trip. It seems to work longer before tripping in a colder room.

I haven't been able to fully restore the image without a problem and had to do installation with an XP disk. This was successful but it still trips after a short use.
Does something need to be reset or does the laptop need to be taken in for repair?

Answer:My Satellite notebook shuts down when restoring recovery disk image

Hello

According to your problem description the first step should be professional cleaning. The dust blocks the air circulation and I presume after short time the notebook erached critical temperature. In this case the unit shuts down automatically because of hardware protection.

Clean the unit and I am pretty sure everything will be OK again.

Hi i purchased the C660/01C, unsure wot OS to select 32 bit or 64 bit. It will mainly be used for applications such as office, accounting and abode suite. and surfing the net.
the spec's for the laptop are here:
http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/en/product/XC7798

I probably will upgrade the RAM... if that helps

Answer:Question about Satellite C660/01C Notebook

You can use 32 or 64bit. Both of them are OK and good enough for your ?daily activities?.
Anyway, more and more notebooks were delivered with 64bt OS versions so I think you should install 64bit version too.

I don?t know how it works in NZ but try to create recovery discs for both OS versions.
RAM upgrade is good idea. According notebook specification it has 2 GB RAM only. 2 GB more and with 4 GB RAM notebook will run fine.

Hi

I bought a C660-26R for Christmas and since I have had some real problems watching videos on youtube and downloading things such as itunes or soundcloud. I have a good connection speed but I can't watch a video longer than a few seconds and letting the kids play games on miniclip for example wont work at all.

I have downloaded the recent version of adobe flash player, windows updates are up to date and my internet security is fine. But i dont know why I have encountered so many problems. It takes ages to pay for things on line as well.

If anyone can give me any hints or solutions it would of real help and the simpler the better.

On this virtual way it is not possible to say what is wrong there and give some concrete advice what you can do about it.
I would like to have your notebook in front of me, to see what happen exactly and how your notebook reacts with different commands. In my opinion it is only way to understand all your problems.

Please don?t understand me wrong but I strongly recommend you to find someone who has very good PC knowhow and ask for help.

Hi everyone,

I'll be grateful if anyone can help me in answering my question , How can I prolong my battery life ... I don't mean how many hours it can operate my laptop ,but I mean to last many years without change in its performance.

Some of my friends told me to remove the battery as long as I'm using the AC power, actually I heard a lot of talks about that and I really need an accurate answer.

Thank u

Answer:Satellite C660: How can I prolong notebook's battery life?

Hello

Do you use your notebook most of time on battery power supply?

95% of working time I use my notebook on AC power supply. To be honest i have never removed battery and battery running time is still almost 2 hours.
From time to time I use notebook on battery power supply. I leave notebook running until battery is almost empty. What else you want to do?

By the way: which notebook model do you have?

Hey guys!

For one reason and another I'm considering ordering a Toshiba C660 recovery disk' (Mainly because I would like to sell this laptop and a clean install of Windows 7 is more appealing and secure) but before I go ahead and buy the disk from Toshiba, I presume I will have to enter the windows 7 product key printed on the bottom of my laptop?

The only real problem with this is the key has faded quite badly (Being on the bottom it's seen some use..) and I can't quite make out the last few numbers on the sticker

Is there a way I can get a new key? Or get around entering the key on the new install of windows?

For those interested, a photo of the sticker is below, maybe someone with better eyesight could help?

<Image removed to avoid piracy - ETAF Moderator>

Answer:Toshiba C660 Recovery Disk - Few Questions

I removed the image, because if anyone can read the key - they can use it and put on the internet for anyone to use

Use this program and you will get the key
https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

you can also use Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security audits and more.
to get the key

Also goto the toshiba site and download all the drivers for the PC and put them on a Disk - that will make it easy to re-install any drivers if needed.

Also you could probably make the recovery DVD your self - if the PC has a recovery partition
You should have a recovery manager to create the media

have a look at
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Manager
Disk Manager

should see if there is a partition called recovery

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum:

Being the idiot I am, I changed my WIndows Login password and since I use very long passwords, I have no idea what I changed it to. Guessing is out of the question.

So I powered on my laptop while holding the 0 key, which brought me to the Windows Boot Manager screen. I pressed F8 on Windows 7 for advanced options and opted for 'Recovery Mode' as I have used this in the past to install the OS from scratch.

It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.

Any advice on what I can do?

Thanks

Answer:HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

>It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.
On this step you must enter your Windows login name and login password. Without right password you will not be able to start HDD recovery installation.

There is second option to install recovery image. You can do it now using recovery DVD. Have you created it using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator?

I ordered a set of 2 Toshiba recovery CD's and received them yesterday in order to fix this laptop from a Windows breakdown...

The problem arising at start up is that Windows 7 isn't starting up plus that the hard disk doesn't show in the BIOS (the DVD-drive does) and after the boot sequence the following message comes up: ?Reboot and select proper boot device or insert root media in selected boot device? Someone suggested the drive is broken or the cables to the same detached or lose.

The owner says, that the error first appeared after McAfee offered to "remove 15 errors found on the disk". The laptop has never been opened.

When running the recovery CD 1 the boot sequence starts the recovery but initially shows two pop-ups that indicate that the hard disk cannot be found.

First error message - ERROR: IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO \\. \PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.

Second error message says something like - There is no access to disk #0 or the RAID configuration isn't correct!

After accepting both messages the prompt hands out the error that also appears in this thread...

...and stops at this line...

X:\ windows\ system32 >

...reporting that the recovery failed.

I have fooled around with the advices in this thread...

[http://superuser.com/questions/318322/... Read more

Answer:Recovery CD's do not recover Satellite C660-1WN

(...continued from first post...)

Left to be said is that I also - before I ordered the recovery CDs - ran the second diagnostic DOS tool in the first table to check the disk and got the following report...

- HDD power cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD interface cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD master-slave setting is incorrect

...and equally that no disk could be detected.

My question is now..., what is wrong here? Is it the physical disk that might be the problem? Is it the software? MBR? Can the latter be restored by some command in the prompt? If, then how? Would it be easier to erase the whole disk and then use the recovery CDs? Or won't this work since the recovery CDs can only work with the recovery information on the disk (I assume that this information is only physically on the disk not on the recovery CDs, isn't this correctly understood)?

I am looking forward to any input and help. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

It is know stuck at this and will not go any further says to get system admin to log in however its not allowing to log in or do anything apart from shut down and restart, I have been trying to factory reset but it will not work at all I have tried many attempts with 0 and other options i have been told this doesn't work but I can get up f2 and f8 on load up all that works ok but I cannot find any option to be able to factory reset. it gives me options to recover but they take me to the same screen with no improvements and safe mode will not work.

I hope someone can help me I will be so grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Satellite C660-15r stucks and no recovery possible

At first I must say that recovery option is available if notebook has ?factory settings?. After reading your posting I don?t know if you still use original OS installation that you got with your notebook or maybe OS preinstalled on your own.

I presume you didn't create recovery media (DVD) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator, right?
In your situation usage of recovery disc could be easiest way to fix this and install original recovery image.

Can you please post exact notebook model?

I am not really tech savvy so if anyone can advise me please make explain in idiot proof format!! I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-1LR - New HDD but no recovery disc

> I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.
Problem is that you don't have many options about that.
If you want to have ?factory settings? again you need recovery installation disc. You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx Of course it is not for free but, in my opinion, definitely the best solution.

You can buy Microsoft installation disc and install own version. You must buy valid licence for it.
In this case you must install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities additionally one by one.

Just in case that you can get this Microsoft installation and licence for free you can save some money.

Believe me the best solution is original recovery disc order.

Hi

is there a way to make the recovery disks install win7 x32 instead of x64 (Satellite Pro C660-2JR)

Answer:Recovery disks creation for Satellite Pro C660-2JR

If your notebook was delivered with 64bit version you can create recovery disc for this preinstalled version only. With other words, recovery image saved on recovery partition will be saved on empty DVD disc. Nothing more than that.

If you want to use 32bit OS you must check if your notebook model is supported for it and install own version.

Hi folks,

Posting this question for my neighbour as he now has no internet access as laptop not working - Satellite C660 running Win7.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Nigel

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.

Hello,

A month ago I purchased a Toshiba C660-1FE. After three weeks my HD broke down. I bought a new HD from Western Digital and replaced the broken HD. As I did not make an recovery image of my HD, I had to order the Product recovery discs off the Toshiba website (3 discs, of which disc 1 and 3 were the only one's required for installation).

Now, I have the problem that my laptop keyboard does not work. I am currently using a USB keyboard and mouse to replace my keyboard and touchpad of the laptop.

The laptop keyboard works fine in BIOS. Therefore, I hope it's just a driver problem.

I have:

tried finding and installing lots of drivers on from the toshiba website, no result.
tried changing settings in the bios (usb enable/disable).
tried to fix the problem by re-installing the entire computer again several times.

The keyboard seems to work until windows loads. When the system is starting up I can press caps lock and num lock and the green lights come on. This all stops working once the windows startup symbol appears.

Perhaps a second problem in the device manager: under the display-adapter, 2 subcategories have exclamation marks: it says Mobile Intel(R) 4 series express chipset family twice! I can't seems to fix these with any drivers I can find either. When I check the settings I have this message (google translate since it was in dutch):

+The digital signature for the drivers for this device is required, can not be verified. Possible after a rec... Read more

Answer:After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Hi

Keyboard works in BIOS? this means that the keyboard hardware should be ok and the connection between the motherboard and keyboard is established.

So what could be wrong? Keyboard driver?
Hmm? the keyboard driver is a part of the Windows OS and is installed automatically while OS installation?
I would recommend following:
Go to device manager and extract the point Keyboard.
There you should see something like ?standard PS/2 keyboard?
If you will see a red cross near this device, then this means that the keyboard is disabled.
Usually you should be able to enable this again (in device manager).
If there is no red cross, then I recommend deleting this keyboard from the device manager list?then reboot the notebook. Usually the OS should recognize the removed device automatically and should install the driver too.

Check this.

By the way: it could be possible that you have received a wrong Recovery disk? this could explain the issues after the recover procedure?

Hello Voger

I have created numerous recovery DVD on several Toshiba notebooks and have never noticed something like this. I have used DVD-R discs only and brands were Verbatim or TDK.

Unfortunately I cannot give you answer what does this message means but you must try to repeat DVD creation. If possible try with TDK.

I have a 14-month old C660 (2 months out of warranty!) and the HDD has died quite suddenly.

* 3 days ago working fine
* 2 days ago, got stuck at 'Starting Windows'
* Tried to fix using a System Repair boot disk (DVD) but couldn't fix problem (ran overnight)
* Booted from DVD today, and now from command prompt, every 'dir' on c: takes 20 seconds and trying to copy files gives I/O error.

I am going to buy a new HDD and install, but is there a way to get Windows 7 back onto the disk?
There was no Windows disk supplied with the laptop... there WAS a recovery partition but that is dead too.

I don't want to buy a new copy of Windows when I already have a licence.

(I never did a full backup incl System, as the one and only time I tried to do that it failed to complete the process, killing many blank DVD-R's in the process).
I have most of my personal files backed up.

Thanks

Answer:Satellite C660 - how to install Windows on new disk?

The situation is pretty clear. You don?t have created recovery disc and now you have two options only:
1)you can order original Toshiba recovery disc and install original recovery image
2)you can obtain original Microsoft installation disc and install own OS

In first case check please http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB0202TA0000R01.htm

If you make decision to use option 2 than please note that your product key is useless and you must pay for new licence and code activation. Product key at the Microsoft sticker belongs to recovery image only.

If you have more questions you are welcome.

Toshiba recovery disc can be created with preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery media creator tool? ONLY.

For recovery DVD creation I recommend you to use DVD-R empty medias only.

Hi!

I have a laptop from a client, that is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-239, and i'm having a strange issue.

The original hard disk failed, and as the laptop is out of warranty, we bought a new hard disk, and ordered the recovery media to this model, from our local toshiba repair assistance.

After the setup copied the files to the disk, the imageX fails when restoring the image files with the error:

"the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

The hard disk is new, and i tried also with more 2 hard disks, and also with an external cd-rom drive.

I talked with the support from the local repair assistance, and they told me this occurs because the new hard drive ins't compatible with the recovery media?!

One of the new hard disks i tried, was the exact same model than the original hard disk, and the error still occurs, so the hard disk can't be the problem.

Is there any change of the recovery media is corrupted?

Could also be a motherboard problem?

Thank you

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-239 - Error restoring from recovery media

Of course this is possible.
In case the HDD is OK, the recovery media could be corrupted.

>Could also be a motherboard problem?
I don?t think so?. I presume the HDD is recognized in BIOS properly and the error message says something about corrupted directory. I guess the disk directory is meaning and I think media should be replaced.

What kind of blank DVDs you are using for creating Toshiba recovery disk?

Maybe the error is related to the disk? I have used Verbatim DVD-R mediums and had no problems to create the disks.

Hello,

on the laptop TOSHIBA C660, replaced the hard drive and, as a fact, the OS flew down (Windows 7 SP1 HB x 64).
Installed not licensed, there was no way out, on the Microsoft website, to download the image, the key from the laptop is not suitable.

Not a licensed image, there was no desire to put, the assembly is an assembly, naturally installed such an operating system behaved badly, buggy.

Done, and now the laptop does not work.
In the service center installation of OS and drivers costs 3500 rbl.

Offensively. So I'm looking for help on the forum.

Please, kindly request help. Thank you.

I replaced the HDD in my Toshiba Laptop C660 - following a support check indicated the old one was dead. The laptop initially comes up with the Toshiba Logo then starts scrolling and ends with "Operating System not found".

I do not have a recovery disk / USB. Any helpful advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite C660 will not start - OS not found - where to get install disk?

I presume HDD exchange was successfully. What you can do is to open BIOS settings and check if HDD is recognized properly.
Now you must install operating system. If you don?t have original recovery media you can install OS using Microsoft installation disc. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba download page - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

If you need some assistance let us know.

I have purchased Toshiba laptop(C660-1CV) from a local dealer just before two days. I had loaded VMware along with couple of VMs and some other important software.

In spite of my company insisting for lenevo I had gone for Toshiba because I trust the brand and I have had real good experience with Toshiba. Today morning that is after two days of purchase of laptop the hard disk crashed and I got a black screen no OS prompt, nothing. My dealer said he cannot do anything I have to take it to Al Futtiam service center. The service center guy just re-connected the hard disk and it didn?t work, he straight away made a statement that hard disk needs to be replaced and it will another 4 to 5 days. He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay ?99 AED?. Isn?t that strange enough ??? My own laptop which is just 2 days old crashed and I have to pay for getting my data. The technical guy did not do any other troubleshooting except reconnecting the hard disk.

I want to escalate it to the right level in Toshiba. if anybody has any contacts in UAE region pass it on to me.

Answer:Satellite C660-1CV - hard disk crashed in 2 days

Hi pmavani,

I?m sorry to hear that that HDD died after 2 days that not normally but such things can happen, especially with HDD that is a mechanical part. But don?t worry this case is covered by warranty so you can get a new HDD for free from an authorized service provider and as the guy said it takes 4 or 5 days. That?s ok so the notebook can repaired within one week.

> He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay ?99 AED?. Isn?t that strange enough ???
No, that?s not strange enough. Warranty doesn?t cover backup, you have to do this yourself. That?s the reason why you should install and configure backup software before you do anything.

HI

MY SON HAS ONLY HAD HIS LAPTOP FOR 3 WEEKS.
USED IT THIS MORNING, SHUT IT DOWN IN NORMAL WAY, WENT TO START IT UP THIS EVENING AND GETS A BLACK SCREEN WITH "A DISK READ ERROR OCCURED. PRESS CTRL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART".

I HAVE TRIED RESTARTING, TRIED STARTING IN SAFE MODE, TURNED OFF AND ON AGAIN.

SOMEONE EVEN SUGGESTED TAKING THE BATTERY PACK OUT AND PUTTING BACK BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK.

CAN ANY ONE HELP?

THANKS

Answer:Disk error and black screen on Satellite c660-21z

Hi

It looks like an problem with HDD.
Please check if the HDD is recognized in BIOS. Power up the unit and press F2.
Usually this should help to access the BIOS.
At the first BIOS page the HDD should be mentioned? is it?
If not then this means that HDD is dead and needs to be replaced?

By the way: you did not post the notebook model? but if it?s 3 weeks old, then you have to get in contact with an Toshiba service if the HDD would be faulty? you should get a new one free of charge because the warranty should be valid.

Hi all

Just a query
My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).

As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

After own OS installation you cannot create recovery disc anymore and you can not install recovery image using HDD recovery option (F8 at start-up).

Best thing you can do now is to order original disc from Toshiba and use it for recovery image installation. It is definitely easiest way to have ?factory settings? again.
You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

Over a year ago i have changed to windows 10 (not aware that my laptop is not suitable for this)
It worked fine untill Microsoft started the Windows10 anniversary upgrade 1607.
each time this will result in unbootable system and in need of external recovery to window 10 version 1511.
blocking updates is not simple in Windows10.
I would like to revert to window 7.
The harddisk is error free and there are 4 partitons available:
Partition 1: System 399MB
Cannot use this to parttion install official windows7 from microsoft
Partition 2: Windows 232MB Primair
Partition 3: 786MB OEM reseverd
Partition 4: Data 232MB Primair

pressing 0 at startup does not reset to the original sw

Strange problem. My Satellite C660D-1FM was doing a bunch of updates from Microsoft (hadn't done any updates for ages as it was used by my daughter and not connected to the internet) and after they had completed it rebooted and I got the Toshiba splash screen and then nothing. Holding F8 gives the same problem, tried holding the '0' key while powering on and that was the same. Connected an external monitor and it's the same. I can get into the BIOS and everything looks fine.

So, thinking the hard drive might be faulty I fitted another hard drive and fully installed Win7 from a Microsoft DVD (SP1 and all updates) and everything works. I then thought I'd try and restore the laptop to default factory settings using the Toshiba recovery DVD's which Id created. All worked fine during the install, all 3 DVD's installed and it went through the setup procedure, laptop got to the end when it wanted to reboot, rebooted and now back to the same error - Toshiba splash screen is ok but then it just goes blank. To convince myself I wasn't going mad I then re-installed Win7 from my Microsoft DVD and it installs fine, does all updates and has worked all day today with no issue.

Anyone any idea what's going on?

Answer:Satellite C660 - blank screen after recovery image instalation

Hmmm... something like this should not happen.
Do you use recovery discs for the first time?
Have you noticed the same result on both HDDs?

Problem is that there is no much to do about that and there is no way to change anything while recovery installation runs or later when windows setup is in progress.

Try to set BIOS to default settings and simply try to install recovery image again.

Hi,

1st time forum poster so be gentle please!

My mum has just brought a Toshiba laptop and it's pretty decent to be fair. Taking a quick look at it though i noticed the recovery partition (that comes with most laptops now) is labelled "D:/Data and is 232GB in size. Seems a bit on the large side for me and wondering if it is incorrect?

Have got a screenshot and if someone could confirm either way i'd be most grateful. Can i attach screenshots?

Thanks in advance

So is the data on D safe if I use recovery?

thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite C660/C660D will using recovery erase data on D partition?

Hi

From my knowledge using Recovery Disk would format the whole HDD and all partitions would be created again during this process.
This means that your data on D partition is not safe.

But from my experience the usage of HDD recover would format only the system (C) partition? not quite sure if this applies to all the Toshiba notebooks so possibly you should test this first time? in such case would recommend backup the data in case D partition would be erased.

Running diagnostics on my two-day old Satellite C660 shows a failure on the hard disc. Windows hard disc checker ran without failure.

Can I assume that this is a false indication by the Toshiba diagnostic? The one thread on this topic is not conclusive on this issue.

Thanks Fred

Answer:Satellite C660 - Diagnostic shows a failure on the hard disk

Hi frredi,

What diagnostic tool you mean? Is it the Toshiba diagnostic tool that shows an error on HDD?

If yes you should contact the seller of the notebook and ask for replacement notebook. Defective HDD sector you can always get but it?s not recommendable to save important data on it.

So just give it back to shop and take a new one. :)

Hello Forum - I hope someone can help.

My kids (PC people) run a C660-IST (two years old). I say 'run' - the machine is going at a snail's pace. Confession - their dad has only ever worked on Apple (I know, i know....) so [email protected] thrashing around trying to help them. With limited success.

I've found something called 'Computer' and it says:

Hard Disk Drives (3)

WINDOWS (C:) 81.3 GB free of 149 GB
Data (D:) 141 GB free of 148 GB
Microsoft Office Click-toRun 2010 (Protected) (Q:)

I had supposed that the kids had simply filled up the memory running games (Sims and Zoo Tycoon) but - looking at the memory available that doesn't seem to be the case.

So I ran the 'Diagnostic Tool' programme. Everything looked fine....until it ran the 'HARDDISK'. And it says 'FAIL' in the 'results' box.

That's as far as I've been able to get. Not sure why the 'FAIL' result is there. Not sure what the kids can have done to the machine for this to happen.

Two questions:

- would the 'HARDDISK FAIL' be the cause of the machine running so slowly?

and

- is there anything I can do to try and fix the problem?

Please be gentle with any response - PC management is NOT my forte!

Many thanks

Helpless Dad

Answer:Satellite C660 is running slow - hard disk 'fail'?

> would the 'HARDDISK FAIL' be the cause of the machine running so slowly?

Yes, a faulty HDD can be the reason for slow notebook performance.

> is there anything I can do to try and fix the problem?

There are some things which should be clarified.
If its an physical HDD problem, the only one real solution is: HDD replacement.
If the issue is related to bad sectors and files stored on the HDD, the solution might be much easier:
First of all I would recommend cleaning the system using CCleaner (freeware software)
You could delete the temporal stored files.
Additional you could defrag the HDD partitions .
Here a nice article from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx#fbid=opdomAEomx0

but finally if you would not notice any improvements, you could format the HDD and install the system again using the Toshiba recovery disk.

Seems that it could be BIOS version currently 1.2 needs upgrade to a more recent version so I'll have a look at that. Also possible issue with bootrec maybe.

I spend some hours to try to create the recovery disks for my Laptop (Satellite C660-1DG)

I tried several DVD's but NOGO each time halfway the second DVD it hangs.

I really need to create these recovery DVD's because Im going to upgrade the laptop to run a Windows Server 2012 install for development purposes.

I thought this would take just a minimum amount of time but... of course...

Any thoughs on any way to get this stuff working?

Answer:Satellite C660-1DG - Toshiba Media Creator Recovery fails creating 2nd DVD

I burned just another disk and it was full of validation errors: hundreds.

So I connected my external DVD writer (NEC ND-3500AG) (firmware 2.1A) and took THE SAME DVD and burned it: presto: no problems: 0 validation errors

So I deduce that the internal DVD writer (TSSTcorp TS-L633C) (firmware TF20) is chunky.

I am still in warranty but... is it any use?

Hi,

Can someone please help,

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D for my nephew, We have forgotten the administrator password and we don't have password reset disk is there anyway around this.

Thanks

Answer:I forgot my administrator password on Satellite C660/C660

Hi

I assume you are talking about windows system password and not about BIOS password. Right?
It?s not very big problem if you forgotten the System password but if you mean BIOS password then you are in trouble because the BIOS password can be deleted just by an Toshiba ASP technicians?

So I assume you mean Windows password? so start the notebook and press F8
Now you can choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.
This would start a HDD recovery procedure which would reinstall the system? during the setup you can set anther admin password.

Of course there are some other methods but as far as I know this requires 3rd party software/tools or Win 7 DVD? so I think the HDD recovery is the fastest solution.

Hi there

I wonder if anyone can help me with my problem. I have been given an HP G72-102SA Notebook PC with a wiped hard drive and no recovery disks, and I wonder if there is any way I can get it back up and running. It was originally running Windows 7, but upgraded to Windows 10, but then the hard drive was wiped before any sort of recovery media was created, and now all I have when I turn it on is a black screen saying "An operating system wasn't found".

I have tried the Microsoft website to download Windows 7 again, but because it was a preinstalled version of Windows 7, it said I had to contact the manufacturer, so I went to the HP website, only to find the recovery media for this particular computer isn't available. I have tried various other websites (computersurgeons.com & Best2Serve.com for example) but I have not been able to find the recovery media for this particular HP product.

Does anyone have any ideas about where I should try next, or got some disks I can borrow, or any other things that I could try? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Lyn

Answer:HP G72-102SA Notebook - Recovery Disk

HP G72-102SA Notebook PC (support site)
It has drivers listed only for Windows 7 32-bit/64-bit, so it's obvious it came with a version and bit number of Windows 7.
What's the exact Windows 7 version on its Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker?
What's the exact serial number and product number on it?

Neither the HP site nor the Restore Disks site appear to have a recovery media kit for it.

If Windows 10 was previously installed in it, you can reinstall it again without having to reinstall Windows 7 first, and it should self-activate.
HERE is where you start.

i have a Compaq mini notebook that's running xp and apparently according to hp when I first used the machine I would have been instructed to make a recovery disk? not sure how as it doesn't have an optical drive.

anyhow it looks as though there is usually a partition in the hard drive for recovery but I have looked at every way possible to see if there is one and I have to say ive never found one, to top it off hp no longer support this model so there is no recovery disk/usb dongle available

what I want to do is sell this on as while it only has xp on it its more than capable of running windows 7 and is by no means a slow machine, but in order to do that I want to properly remove any data off of it to safe guard myself hence the factory reset seemed like a good option, but now I cant do that does anyone have a good way I can reset this thing short of re installing windows, which while I have a disk and a legitimate licence I cant do as the licence is oem and being I want to sell it I don't think a dodgy copy of xp is going to cut it and its not worth the cost of installing a new os

any advice will be welcome

or get a copy of Windows and install it. Then, download the all necessary drivers and enjoy it.

What do you think?
Please help me.

Answer:Can I use recovery CD from other Satellite notebook to install OS?

Hi

Something like this is not possible because recovery CD is created for each notebook model separately. It is not a kind of ?universal recovery image?.

Every recovery image contains drivers, tools and utilities designed for specific notebook model. Because of that you can not compare those two Satellite note books and both notebooks are completely different.

Use Microsoft installations CD and also offered drivers, tools and utilities on Toshiba download page.

When I first got this product, before opening I thought that all the 500gb would go to the first partition, but then I saw that the recovery partition has half of the 500gb just for recovery which is unnessecery.

But I had no problem with this at the time, and used the recovery partition(after saving to a disk) for ubuntu so I could have a dual boot.

But now I've came to realise that the games I'm downloading are taking more and more room up on my C drive. The problem I have is that I can shrink my recovery partition and enlarge the C drive.

Does anyone know a work around?

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-225: Shrinking recovery partition englarge C partition

You will need an 3rd party software to shrink the recovery partition and to add the free space the existing C partition.
I would recommend you an freeware tool called Gparted

But before you would start doing this, create a recovery disk!
This is advisable in case you would try to set the notebook back to factory settings using such disk.

Talk about confusing. Does anyone know how to get a Toshiba C660 working after the HDD has failed and the owner has stupidly NOT followed the instructions to make a recovery disk. Will the recovery disk ( if you purchase one from Toshiba ) rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition and install windows 7 (original OS ) and accept the product key printed on the Windows License attached to the base of the laptop. I have read a number of suggestions but these have been deemed incorrect by others.

Surely Toshiba must have a way of sorting this problem.

Do they read these posts ?

Answer:Satellite L660-12Q - Would recovery disk rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition

Hi buddy?

I don?t think that this is really complicated? I could find all info regarding the recovery procedure in the user manual?

The recovery disk has to be created at the first day of purchase? its recommended to create one in cases something would be wrong with the HDD.

The recovery disk contain an image?. Image is a package containing Win system, drivers, tools and all the stuff preinstalled on the notebook.
You purchased the notebook and the system was already activated so you don?t need the key placed at the bottom of the unit.
Furthermore the usage of recovery disk formats the whole HDD (partitions too) and set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.

There is also another option to recover the notebook called HDD recovery. This HDD recovery does not need recovery disk. Usage of HDD recovery would format ONLY the C (system) partition.

I have a toshiba Satellite C650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that I have read about on the internet.

I have made a Windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has Windows 7 64-bit installed. When I use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine.

Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why I am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Satellite C650 - Disk read error and recovery disk is not working

On this virtual way it is not easy to offer exact diagnostic but obviously there must be some problem with HDD. Can you obtain second one for testing purposes and exchange it. Just to be sure if HDD is ?troublemaker?.

But there is one another thing:
>I have made a Windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop....
Sorry but I don?t understand this. Can you please explain to us what have you done exactly?

I have a Toshiba Satellite running WXP home edition. Ran the recovery CD last night, have run it before and had no problems. But this time... after running it with no errors, it asks at the very end to remove the CD and hit any key to continue.

Which I did. The system then boots up show the Toshiba splash screen, and then goes to a small blinking cursors in the upper left hand corner of screen. Cannot mover cursor, screen is black in background.
CTRL+ALT+DELETE doesn?t work.
Hit the power button same scenario.
Ran the recovery CD again, same scenario as above.
Then booted up from Linux CD, shows my HD and contents etc. Ran chkdsk from the Linux CD.
No problems.

Is the recovery CD flawed?

Answer:Re: Cannot finish recovery procedure on my Satellite notebook

Which Satellite do you have exactly?
While recovery installation runs hast you saw usual activity on the screen?

I think problem is Linux. Try to rewrite MBR before you start recovery installation.

Hello,

I have started using my nice new Satellite T110-12. How can I create a recovery disk?

Why there is a frequent message about vibration has been detected, hard drive head disk has been moved to a safe position? Is there something wrong? Should I return it before the week is up?

Please answer, many many thanks!

Answer:Satellite T110-121 - Question about recovery disk and hard disk

Hi LindaMon,

> How can I create a recovery disk?
What about reading your user manual?
You need an 8GB USB stick for creating a recovery medium and preinstalled Toshiba recovery disk creator.

> hard drive head disk has been moved to a safe position?
Yes, that?s normal and everything is ok with your notebook. Your HDD will be protected by HDD/SSD Alert utility that is a nice feature from Toshiba to avoid head crashes and can enhance the life of internal HDD.
But yoou can disable these notifications if you want. ;)

Hi,

I live in Brazil and won a satellite M205-S4804. But i received it without any CD or DVD. No software drivers, no recovery CD or DVD.

I have both portuguese version of Windows: Vista and XP. And need to install them on my M205, but i do not found all drivers.

I tried to download the drivers in the @skIris and some components not installed fine, like a Wi-Fi card (I do not know what model is the device).

I think if i recovery the original status of my english Windows Vista (Home) and upgrade to my portuguese version(Ultimate), I will not need to reinstall the drivers...

There are a site to download the drivers and the recovery CD/DVD for my laptop?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite M205-S4804 Recovery Disk and Drivers Disk?

This notebook seems to be designed for the US market and therefore you should look on the Toshiba US site for some drivers?

The M205 seems to be a new series on the market and possibly not all drivers were released at this time. SO maybe you will have to wait a little bit?

Sorry but this is everything what I can suggest?

Hi there,

i have set the boot sequence to boot from cd, but the message reads: non bootable disk.

I have tried to open it with ghost but it wants a password.

Toshiba Satellite A60.

Answer:Satellite A60 - Recovery disk will not boot - error non bootable disk

Hi

First of all you will be not able to extract the ghost image file because it?s secured as you could see.

I don?t know why you cannot boot from the Toshiba Recovery CD. But a reason could be:
- The CD is faulty (scratch, not more readable)
- You used a wrong CD
- The CD/DVD drive cannot handle this CD due to the old and faulty drive laser lens.

So you should firstly check if you can boot from other Microsoft Windows CD to find out if the CD/DVD drive is ok.
If this is ok then there is a issue with your CD!!!

I need to try and do a system recovery on my Satellite U400-146.
However i don't think it came with a disc.
Does anyone know how initiate the system recovery on this laptop?

Answer:Satellite U400-146 - How to start recovery without the recovery disk

Hi

The Recovery disk was not provided with the notebook because there was a tool called Toshiba Recovery disk Creator which allows you to create a recovery disk!
Please check if you can create a recovery disk using this tool!

If this is not possible, then you can check if the HDD recovery is available.
For more details check this HOW TO:
[How to recover a Toshiba notebook with the HDD recovery procedure?|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=58]

As last option you can order a recovery disk from here:

I want to restore it to orginal...

Answer:Cannot install Toshiba Recovery image on my Satellite notebook

You can install original recovery image and set notebook to ?factory settings? using two possible options:
-to use HDD recovery installation (F8 at start-up and ?repair my computer? option)
-to use recovery DVD

If I understand you right you have installed own OS in hope to use your notebook but on this way you have ?deleted? this repair my computer option so you will not be able to start installation from HDD. Your only option is usage of recovery DVD.

Now the million dollar question: have you created recovery DVD following Toshiba advice to do this?

I have read the threads on this forum, but I didn't come up with an exact answer to my problem.

With my regular PC I got a Vista Installation Disk, that also serves as recovery disk (like the one one could make with XP). One of the more useful things is that when you boot from that disk you have an option to "repair" the system, meaning that all vital files (like the bootloader...) will be restored, but for the rest all existing data wil remain. This is extremely important when for example you install a dual boot with Linux, when often Vista refuses to boot and repairing the bootloader solves the problem. Of course it can easily and quickly fix all kind of other system problems as well.

My Toshiba laptop A200 (otherwise a wonderful machine), came with the Toshiba Product Recovery disk. From all I have read on the forum and from what it says on the disk itself, I understand that it only allows for a total re-install of the whole system, factory-set, wiping out your whole disk and all on it.

Does Toshiba really leave us without a "repair" "option ??
I find that quite amazing, since after all I paid for the Vista operating system, so why shouldn't I get the options I would have if I had an original Vista disk?

If all above I is right, it means that if I want to install a dual boot with Ubuntu and would get a bootloader problem, I would loose all my data, when I only have to repair the bootloader?? (An issue that with the "repair" o... Read more

Answer:Satellite A200: Can I use Recovery disk without wiping disk

Hey Yossi

I think you have misunderstood something!

You have received the Toshiba Recovery CD with the Toshiba image! The image contains the Vista OS, Toshiba drivers, tools, utilities and additional programs!

Please don?t compare this disk to the original Microsoft Vista CD and don?t mix it!!!

So using this disk you can set the notebook back to the factory settings!!!
This is very useful because this procedure takes about 10min only and you get the whole functioning OS with all drivers, tools, etc?

Please note that no all users and customers who buy such notebook are technicians and computer scientists ;) but simply newbie and such recovery possibility is always welcome!!!

?but the usage of this Recovery CD formats the whole HDD and erases all partitions.
Therefore it?s advisable to backup the data before using the recovery CD/DVD

My laptop crashed (Toshiba L305-s5921 series).
I dont have the recover discs, but I do have the recovery disc for my Toshiba A215 series.

Can i recover my laptop with this disc.

Answer:Can I use the Satellite A215 recovery disk for Satellite L305-s5921

No!

You can not use the Recovery disk designed for A215 because the A215 is simply different notebook model which need different drivers as the L305!

The image on the recovery disk contains the OS, drivers and tools and if you would use different recovery disk then wrong drivers would be installed on the L305 and this can lead to other troubles!!!

Hi

It?s very strange because this unit is not very old and as far as I know you can order all recover cd. Toshiba should have always a copy of the CD or DVD. I can?t believe that it?s not possible.
I would recommend asking the ASP again or to call a different ASP in Poland.

The second possibility is to install the OS from the Microsoft CD and then to install the whole drivers and Toshiba tools.
This Toshiba stuff you will find on the Toshiba driver page.

Answer:Satellite A30-141 - Where can I get a recovery disk for it?

Hi

As far as I know on the Toshiba shop (link that you posted) you can only order recovery disk for newer notebooks they was delivered without a disk but I?m not sure.

Anyway, if you can?t order a new disk online you should contact the local ASP. They should be able to order a disk for you.
Here you can search for the nearest ASP:

Answer:Need Recovery disk for Satellite Pro M70

Hi

It?s pity that you damage the recovery disk?. But maybe you could order a new one from the ASP (authorized service partner) in your country.
I said ?maybe? because I?m not quit sure if recovery disk for Sat M70 is available because the recovery disk for older notebook models could be discontinued.

However I think you should contact the ASP in your country to get more details?
If such recover would be available then an ASP should be able to order it from Toshiba?

I purchased a Satellite L series, L10-333 a few years ago.
Since then it started to become slow and not work aswell so I rebooted the hard drive using the reboot disc which comes with my laptop.
After this it was fine and worked perfectly.

Since then I have upgraded my laptop onto Windows Vista, from XP home edition.
Since the upgrade I have had so many different problems with my laptop, and it doesnt seem to want to work.

Can I change my laptop back to XP using the re-boot hard drive disc that comes with my laptop to do this?? Or is there something else i can do??

please help!!

I bought a new Toshiba Satelitte M50-161 about 4 years ago and its been great until recently when it has developed some serious problems.
I need a recovery disc or the original software disc for XP but none of this was supplied with it.

How can I get hold of these discs now?

Answer:How to get the Recovery disk for Satellite M50-161

>I need a recovery disc or the original software disc for XP but none of this was supplied with it.
I'm in doubt about it. According notebook specification Satellite M50-161 is delivered with follow medias:
- Recovery Medias (CD-ROM or DVD)
- Express Media Player
- Additional Software CD
- Microsoft Works Suite

All old notebook models are delivered with recovery CDs. I have old Satellite m70 and still have original Toshiba recovery installations DVD.

Anyway, you can try to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and ask for help. To be honest I don't believe you will get it for this old notebook model. For OS installation you can also use Microsoft installations CD. All drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

Hi buddy,

I think you have to install the correct drivers because the other recovery disk contains wrong drivers. Just check the Toshiba website:

Furthermore from Toshiba you can?t get a recovery disk. You have to contact an authorized service provider.

Is there a place where I can download the contents of this disk?

Thanks,

Answer:Satellite A50: Need second disk of Recovery CD

Hi,

unfortunately it's not possible to download recovery CD images.
You can only get a new one from an ASP.
Maybe you should call them.

But if you have a normal version of Windows, you can install this, and download the drivers and software from Toshiba's driver download page.

Answer:Need recovery disk for my Satellite M30-106

Satellite M30 is pretty old notebook model and I don't believe you can order Toshiba recovery media for it.
What you can try is to contact nearest authorized service provider and ask for help.
Addresses and phone numbers you can find under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Download & Support > Find an ASP

Other way you can use Microsoft installations CD for WXP installation. All drivers and Toshiba tools & utilities you can download from Toshiba download page. Your notebook is listed in Archive.

When trying to run the recovery disk on my A75 I get a message that it will not run on a non Toshiba machine. It looks like I'm missing some system files.

Answer:Trying to run the recovery disk on my Satellite A75

Hi

Do you use the Recovery disk delivered together with this notebook?
Are you sure you?ve got the right disk?

The other reasons could be a faulty or missing information in the DMI.
The DMI contains details about the notebook model, series number and other necessary details.
If such information is not correct then the notebook cannot be recognized as a Toshiba unit and therefore the Toshiba recovery procedure would be not possible.

Check this US page:
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/outFrm.jsp?ofId=AskIris&searchString=DMI+A75\

There you can find info regarding the DMI and Sat A75

Answer:Need Satellite M70 Recovery disk

If you need a Recovery disk then you would have to ask your ASP in your country for such disk.

In very rare cases you will be not able to order a Recovery disk if the notebook series is too old. In such case you will have to install the Windows OS using the Microsoft disk and then you could download and reinstall the Toshiba driver which you could find on the Toshiba European page.

Well I got this laptop two days ago and used it once after installing fire fox and my mobile broadband drvier's and going back home to boot up and find it was going to happen,

I had tried safe mode (all three) and repair and all I got was a black screen with the cursor up where there should have been a language screen (I used the recovery disk that came along with the laptop) so anyway after finding out I wasnt going to be able to repair it I tried to install but of course that didn't work either so I put my XP 64 bit OS on and worked perfectly fine, then I upgraded (using my own upgrade windows 7) and that works fine no problems, so I tried again with the original windows 7 that came pre-installed on the laptop's hard drive and all went find untill it starts installing driver's or updates (I'm not 100% sure on this but it is at and/or after the face recognition installation,

Then it shuts it's self down and boots back up to automatically restart and asking me if I want to repair due to a bad start-up so I do the repair boots back up and still says I need to repair and finds nothing wrong and carrys on in that circle.

Now I have been told that it could be the register or it is a graphics problem, I myself am getting pretty fed up of having to install/reinstall/format this laptop.

So if there is anyone who know's what is wrong or what to do or even if it needs to be sent back to be fixed that will be very helpful.

I thank anyone in advance.

Answer:Satellite L500-19X - Can't use the recovery disk

Hi

Well, I think it?s really hard to say what the reason is. Maybe the recovery disk is scratchy or the files corrupt there.

At the moment I can?t imagine that it?s a hardware problem because other Windows disk working properly.

In your case I would try to install Windows 7 from a Microsoft disk and then see what happens. If it works properly and you can install all drivers & tools you should order a new recovery disk from Toshiba directly.
