Satellite C660 - recovery disk fails error 1117

Question: Satellite C660 - recovery disk fails error 1117

Please can anyone help. I tried using my recovery disks to restore my notebook when it kept failing to start properly. The disks did not work so I purchased a set of disc from Toshiba on this website. I still have the same problem.

Is it the hard drive failing or something else?

If I purchase a new hard drive will the recovery disks work if the hard drive is not exactly the same as the one that came out?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite C660 - recovery disk fails error 1117

Hi

Did you think about the HDD?
It could be a HDD malfunction that does not allow you to install the system.

I recommend checking the HDD for some possible issues.

There is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test. You can use it for HDD check.
Google simply to get the software.

After deleting lots of files with virusses, the C650 was slow. Decided to reinstall wondows 7 from the restore D: partition. Afther formatting C: restore failed.
I ordered Restore Media, USB recieved, followed procedure.
After 3 hours it tels me there is an error 1117. a Retry has started automattically. After 1 hour again Error 117 and the process stops.
I made an image of the screen

What can I do?

Answer:Recovery process stops Error 1117 Satellite C650

What you can do about that? I’m afraid not much.
As far as I know either it works or not and there is no some kind of “workaround”. You cannot force recovery installation to end installation.

Either is recovery image saved on USB defective or your notebook is the troublemaker, HDD maybe.

I presume you have started recovery image installation several times, right?
Does error message occur always after 41% of installation?

I've got a L30-101 which was becoming slow to power up. Another forum suggested going into ms config to ensure max memory being used for boot up and to uncheck some start items. When I restarted, windows icons were enlarged and slightly blurry, so I undid the changes I made but windows is still not clear. The laptop is working fine otherwise, so I saved what data I needed and tried a system restore, but the computer cant find any restore points.

As a last resort I tried the Toshiba Product Recovery disk which I had never used before. It starts reading it ok, then asks for language choice English. About 10mins later it stops with the error message "Could not get a language entry from INI file! Section :[Commom] Key InstallCMD File D:\Setenv.ini.
When I hit OK to clear the message the Administrator page states Failed to initiate the raid class No RAID-continue normally.

When I restart the laptop it takes me back to my previous state with slightly blurry icons, an otherwise working laptop and all my old data is still there.

I've since bought a new Satellite L450D laptop which I am posting this from, but I am keen to try and get my L30 up and running again as a spare. I contacted Toshiba UK in case there was a fault with the recovery disk, but due licensing issues they can only redirect me to the toshiba eu backup media website to purchase a new recovery disk. As I already have a recovery disk, I dont want to buy another one to have the same results. Does anyo... Read more

Answer:Satellite L30 Recovery disk fails : Could not get language entry error

At first I must say that you should back up all your important data to external device like external HD or USB stick. When you use recovery installations disc all partition will be deleted.

I don't know why you cannot use delivered recovery disc but only thing you can do is to visit nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and show the problem. If they can confirm recovery DVD is defective I presume you will get new one for free.

I spend some hours to try to create the recovery disks for my Laptop (Satellite C660-1DG)

It fails on the second DVD halfway. It just hangs. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work anymore a cold boot is required to start the thing again.

I tried several DVD's but NOGO each time halfway the second DVD it hangs.

I really need to create these recovery DVD's because Im going to upgrade the laptop to run a Windows Server 2012 install for development purposes.

I thought this would take just a minimum amount of time but... of course...

Any thoughs on any way to get this stuff working?

Answer:Satellite C660-1DG - Toshiba Media Creator Recovery fails creating 2nd DVD

I burned just another disk and it was full of validation errors: hundreds.

So I connected my external DVD writer (NEC ND-3500AG) (firmware 2.1A) and took THE SAME DVD and burned it: presto: no problems: 0 validation errors

So I deduce that the internal DVD writer (TSSTcorp TS-L633C) (firmware TF20) is chunky.

I am still in warranty but... is it any use?

I have a brand-new Satellite Pro C660. It worked fine for a day, now it won't load windows. I didn't get around to creating the recovery disks as I've only had it a few hours (yes, yes, I know, should have been the first thing I did). All the data is present (but backed up to USB just in case) and I can see the HDDREcovery folder with all data intact. However, I can't run the app to create recovery disks. Does anyone know how to extract the images and create the media using only the command prompt? (I can get into command prompt by booting from a friend's Win 7 disk). All boot options from the laptop's own drives fail. It says "Windows Failed to Load", and I try Startup Repair but it doesn't find any errors. Any help/thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro C660 - How to make recovery disk with command prompt?

Hey,

It?s not possible to create recovery disk with command prompt. You have to use the Toshiba recovery media creator on Windows.

Now it?s too late for you but you can order such a disk here:

Hmmmm.... there must be some problem with recovery image.
When you open recover disc creator and if there is option for USB media creation please test it.

Maybe you will be able to create recovery USB stick.

Hi!

I have a laptop from a client, that is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-239, and i'm having a strange issue.

The original hard disk failed, and as the laptop is out of warranty, we bought a new hard disk, and ordered the recovery media to this model, from our local toshiba repair assistance.

After the setup copied the files to the disk, the imageX fails when restoring the image files with the error:

"the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

The hard disk is new, and i tried also with more 2 hard disks, and also with an external cd-rom drive.

I talked with the support from the local repair assistance, and they told me this occurs because the new hard drive ins't compatible with the recovery media?!

One of the new hard disks i tried, was the exact same model than the original hard disk, and the error still occurs, so the hard disk can't be the problem.

Is there any change of the recovery media is corrupted?

Could also be a motherboard problem?

Thank you

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-239 - Error restoring from recovery media

> Is there any change of the recovery media is corrupted?
Of course this is possible.
In case the HDD is OK, the recovery media could be corrupted.

>Could also be a motherboard problem?
I don?t think so?. I presume the HDD is recognized in BIOS properly and the error message says something about corrupted directory. I guess the disk directory is meaning and I think media should be replaced.

Answer:Disk error and black screen on Satellite c660-21z

Hi

It looks like an problem with HDD.
Please check if the HDD is recognized in BIOS. Power up the unit and press F2.
Usually this should help to access the BIOS.
At the first BIOS page the HDD should be mentioned? is it?
If not then this means that HDD is dead and needs to be replaced?

By the way: you did not post the notebook model? but if it?s 3 weeks old, then you have to get in contact with an Toshiba service if the HDD would be faulty? you should get a new one free of charge because the warranty should be valid.

Hi, Hope someone can help.

Laptop stopped working - keeps trying to fix problem via windows on start-up but this just hangs for hours so I ordered a recovery disc to start a fresh as I believe the original problems were caused by a virus. I have no important data to keep so am OK with clearing everything and restarting. Today. I have just received my Product Recovery disc that I ordered from Toshiba. I follow the instructions; load disc, power on holding C. Then it just continues as if the Recovery CD wasnt in the drive. The CD drive doesnt spin. Its as if the laptop doesnt recognize the disc.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite Pro A300 - Recovery disk fails at start

Hello

Well, either i?s something wrong with recovery disk itself or the drive doesn?t detect the disk properly?

What happens if you access the BIOS boot menu (F12 key) and select CD/DVD drive as boot device?
If it doesn?t work try another bootable disk to make sure the drive is working properly.

My hard drive in my ENVY dv7 died for the second time in two years (it was under warranty last time and I was able to send it in to be fixed). I bought the exact same hard drive (Samsung, 1TB), tested it in BIOS, passed everything. When I try to do the image recovery with the HP Recovery Disks I received last time my hard drive died, I get an error while at 58% on recovery disk two that says: Reducer Copy File Fails From: d:\preload\base24.SWMTo: c:\RM\Image\BASE24.SWM Press OK to retry. I press OK and it does the same thing over and over again. The folks who have asked about this same type of error seem to get nowhere in here, but what choice do I have?! The hard drive is the same size, same manufacturer, same model, so it should have the issue of reimaging the system on a smaller hard drive, right? I am just out of luck on this? So frustrated.

englejas Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about problems doing recovery and wanted to help. Here is the link to the win8.1 media creation tool:  Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help Understand, though, that you might run into a problem installing using the media created from this tool. You have an HP OEM version of Win8 installed on your PC and that means that the product key embedded in the UEFI firmware of your motherboard is OEM, not retail. While the media created from this tool SHOULD activate using that key, there is no guarantee that it will do that.  If it does not, you can use this tool to retrieve your product key and try entering it manually:  Download Windows OEM Product Key Tool - MajorGeeks IF that still does not work, then your only recourse would be to order a new set of recovery disks from HP. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. I have a Satellite C660 - PSC0AQ-03C019 + 1B194392K

For the last year the notebook has been running fine however in the last 2 months it has had a boot issue. The first attempted boot of the day, it will not boot, it powers on gets past the boot screens past the blinking cursor top left then stalls with a blank screen (not cursor just a faint glow).

Pressing and holding the power button turning it off and then turning on again the computer will start. sometimes (not always ) it will ask to boot normally or repair.

The notebook works perfectly in use not errors not crashes. Restarting the notebook works as expected shutting down and powering on after 5 mins works fine.

If the notebook is left off for an hour it or more it will not boot the same as above. powering off and powering on the system will boot but with start normally question.

There are no errors shown in system logs

I have performed a full system reinstall from HDD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD recovery.
I have performed a full system reinstall from DVD on to a brand new hard drive recovery.
I have replaced the ram

I have attempted to update the bios but get an error

Hi,

I have a toshiba Satellite C650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that I have read about on the internet.

I have made a Windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has Windows 7 64-bit installed. When I use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?
I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine.

Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why I am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Satellite C650 - Disk read error and recovery disk is not working

On this virtual way it is not easy to offer exact diagnostic but obviously there must be some problem with HDD. Can you obtain second one for testing purposes and exchange it. Just to be sure if HDD is ?troublemaker?.

But there is one another thing:

Sorry but I don?t understand this. Can you please explain to us what have you done exactly?

Hi there,

i have set the boot sequence to boot from cd, but the message reads: non bootable disk.

I have tried to open it with ghost but it wants a password.

Toshiba Satellite A60.

Answer:Satellite A60 - Recovery disk will not boot - error non bootable disk

Hi

First of all you will be not able to extract the ghost image file because it?s secured as you could see.

I don?t know why you cannot boot from the Toshiba Recovery CD. But a reason could be:
- The CD is faulty (scratch, not more readable)
- You used a wrong CD
- The CD/DVD drive cannot handle this CD due to the old and faulty drive laser lens.

So you should firstly check if you can boot from other Microsoft Windows CD to find out if the CD/DVD drive is ok.
If this is ok then there is a issue with your CD!!!

BIOS update requires the VAP (value added package) and all security tools should be turned off.
Here is detailed instruction how to update the BIOS:

You can also check if new OS installation would fix this because this issue could be related to muddled operating system? you know? but firstly try to reinstall the VAP and be sure that you use the right BIOS.

Hi All,

I have the above computer (or should I say my wife) & it has been nothing but a right pain since the first day we got it.
I have had it about 2 years & must have had to reformat the HD at least 6-8 times using the Product Recovery Disc as laptop wouldn't boot.
The laptop runs Vista.

Anyway problem I have now is that once again laptop fails to boot but for some reason Product Recovery disc also fails to work.....
What can I do...

I have read on various forums that it might work if I reformat the HD first using some s/w on a bootable CD but how/ what S/W do I use.....?
The laptop has a 160Gb SATA HD installed. How can I check this is all working.
I have no idea if current problem is S/W or hardware related..

Does Toshiba have a utility I can use...?

Many thanks for any help....

Hi

What happened exactly?
Do you get some error messages using recover disk?

Please check if the HDD is OK! You can check this in BIOS.
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then the BIOS found the HDD and the HDD is not dead.

Usually you could boot the notebook using an Live disk? for example Bart PE
It?s a bootable live windows CD/DVD

This can helps to format the HDD and then to use the recovery disk!

Hey guys!

For one reason and another I'm considering ordering a Toshiba C660 recovery disk' (Mainly because I would like to sell this laptop and a clean install of Windows 7 is more appealing and secure) but before I go ahead and buy the disk from Toshiba, I presume I will have to enter the windows 7 product key printed on the bottom of my laptop?

The only real problem with this is the key has faded quite badly (Being on the bottom it's seen some use..) and I can't quite make out the last few numbers on the sticker

Is there a way I can get a new key? Or get around entering the key on the new install of windows?

For those interested, a photo of the sticker is below, maybe someone with better eyesight could help?

<Image removed to avoid piracy - ETAF Moderator>

Answer:Toshiba C660 Recovery Disk - Few Questions

I removed the image, because if anyone can read the key - they can use it and put on the internet for anyone to use

Use this program and you will get the key
https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

you can also use Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security audits and more.
to get the key

Also goto the toshiba site and download all the drivers for the PC and put them on a Disk - that will make it easy to re-install any drivers if needed.

Also you could probably make the recovery DVD your self - if the PC has a recovery partition
You should have a recovery manager to create the media

have a look at
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Manager
Disk Manager

should see if there is a partition called recovery

I ordered a set of 2 Toshiba recovery CD's and received them yesterday in order to fix this laptop from a Windows breakdown...

The problem arising at start up is that Windows 7 isn't starting up plus that the hard disk doesn't show in the BIOS (the DVD-drive does) and after the boot sequence the following message comes up: ?Reboot and select proper boot device or insert root media in selected boot device? Someone suggested the drive is broken or the cables to the same detached or lose.

The owner says, that the error first appeared after McAfee offered to "remove 15 errors found on the disk". The laptop has never been opened.

When running the recovery CD 1 the boot sequence starts the recovery but initially shows two pop-ups that indicate that the hard disk cannot be found.

First error message - ERROR: IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO \\. \PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.

Second error message says something like - There is no access to disk #0 or the RAID configuration isn't correct!

After accepting both messages the prompt hands out the error that also appears in this thread...

...and stops at this line...

X:\ windows\ system32 >

...reporting that the recovery failed.

I have fooled around with the advices in this thread...

Answer:Recovery CD's do not recover Satellite C660-1WN

(...continued from first post...)

Left to be said is that I also - before I ordered the recovery CDs - ran the second diagnostic DOS tool in the first table to check the disk and got the following report...

- HDD power cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD interface cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD master-slave setting is incorrect

...and equally that no disk could be detected.

My question is now..., what is wrong here? Is it the physical disk that might be the problem? Is it the software? MBR? Can the latter be restored by some command in the prompt? If, then how? Would it be easier to erase the whole disk and then use the recovery CDs? Or won't this work since the recovery CDs can only work with the recovery information on the disk (I assume that this information is only physically on the disk not on the recovery CDs, isn't this correctly understood)?

I am looking forward to any input and help. Thanks in advance.

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum:

Being the idiot I am, I changed my WIndows Login password and since I use very long passwords, I have no idea what I changed it to. Guessing is out of the question.

So I powered on my laptop while holding the 0 key, which brought me to the Windows Boot Manager screen. I pressed F8 on Windows 7 for advanced options and opted for 'Recovery Mode' as I have used this in the past to install the OS from scratch.

It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.

Any advice on what I can do?

Thanks

Answer:HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

On this step you must enter your Windows login name and login password. Without right password you will not be able to start HDD recovery installation.

There is second option to install recovery image. You can do it now using recovery DVD. Have you created it using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator?

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me or knows what to do. I have Satellite C660-15r it was turned off properly but when put back on it came up with start windows normally as if it has been interrupted, I clicked ok to that but instead of loading it has gone to do some sort of recovery only it hasn't been able to complete this and instead has said there is nothing to recover.

It is know stuck at this and will not go any further says to get system admin to log in however its not allowing to log in or do anything apart from shut down and restart, I have been trying to factory reset but it will not work at all I have tried many attempts with 0 and other options i have been told this doesn't work but I can get up f2 and f8 on load up all that works ok but I cannot find any option to be able to factory reset. it gives me options to recover but they take me to the same screen with no improvements and safe mode will not work.

I hope someone can help me I will be so grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Satellite C660-15r stucks and no recovery possible

At first I must say that recovery option is available if notebook has ?factory settings?. After reading your posting I don?t know if you still use original OS installation that you got with your notebook or maybe OS preinstalled on your own.

I presume you didn't create recovery media (DVD) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator, right?
In your situation usage of recovery disc could be easiest way to fix this and install original recovery image.

Can you please post exact notebook model?

I am not really tech savvy so if anyone can advise me please make explain in idiot proof format!! I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-1LR - New HDD but no recovery disc

> I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.
Problem is that you don't have many options about that.
If you want to have ?factory settings? again you need recovery installation disc. You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx Of course it is not for free but, in my opinion, definitely the best solution.

You can buy Microsoft installation disc and install own version. You must buy valid licence for it.
In this case you must install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities additionally one by one.

Just in case that you can get this Microsoft installation and licence for free you can save some money.

Believe me the best solution is original recovery disc order.

I bought a couple of days a go a new Satellite C660-121. Today I proceeded to make the recovery discs but it fails verifying the first DVD disc.
The error I get is this
http://img231.imageshack.us/i/failedcopy.png/

E:\ is the name of the DVD drive. I use Verbatim DVD-R media, I have the laptop on power supply during the burning process and I tried twice with two different discs and got the same result. How can I fix this problem?

Answer:Satellite C660-121 can't verify the recovery disc

Hello Voger

I have created numerous recovery DVD on several Toshiba notebooks and have never noticed something like this. I have used DVD-R discs only and brands were Verbatim or TDK.

Unfortunately I cannot give you answer what does this message means but you must try to repeat DVD creation. If possible try with TDK.
If the same happen again I recommend you to recovery your notebook using HDD recovery option and try to create recovery discs again.

Sorry but I don?t see any other possibility at the moment.

Hi
I have tried to restore a Satellite C660 to factory settings due to it be extremely slow to start up.

Using the Toshiba original recovery discs the process gets partway through and then gives the following messages...

Error restoring image
The device is not ready

ERROR: ImageX could not apply Win7 V:\HDDRecovery\SWImg\15489XSP.swm Index 2 from HDD to C:!

Can anybody advise?!

Unfortunately there is no some ?workaround? to force recovery image installation to run properly.
All you can do at the moment is to set BIOS to default settings and try to use recovery disc again.
Be sure disc is clean.

Do you use recovery discs for the first time?

Hi

is there a way to make the recovery disks install win7 x32 instead of x64 (Satellite Pro C660-2JR)

Answer:Recovery disks creation for Satellite Pro C660-2JR

If your notebook was delivered with 64bit version you can create recovery disc for this preinstalled version only. With other words, recovery image saved on recovery partition will be saved on empty DVD disc. Nothing more than that.

If you want to use 32bit OS you must check if your notebook model is supported for it and install own version.

Hello,

A month ago I purchased a Toshiba C660-1FE. After three weeks my HD broke down. I bought a new HD from Western Digital and replaced the broken HD. As I did not make an recovery image of my HD, I had to order the Product recovery discs off the Toshiba website (3 discs, of which disc 1 and 3 were the only one's required for installation).

Now, I have the problem that my laptop keyboard does not work. I am currently using a USB keyboard and mouse to replace my keyboard and touchpad of the laptop.

The laptop keyboard works fine in BIOS. Therefore, I hope it's just a driver problem.

I have:

tried finding and installing lots of drivers on from the toshiba website, no result.
tried changing settings in the bios (usb enable/disable).
tried to fix the problem by re-installing the entire computer again several times.

The keyboard seems to work until windows loads. When the system is starting up I can press caps lock and num lock and the green lights come on. This all stops working once the windows startup symbol appears.

Perhaps a second problem in the device manager: under the display-adapter, 2 subcategories have exclamation marks: it says Mobile Intel(R) 4 series express chipset family twice! I can't seems to fix these with any drivers I can find either. When I check the settings I have this message (google translate since it was in dutch):

Answer:After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Hi

Keyboard works in BIOS? this means that the keyboard hardware should be ok and the connection between the motherboard and keyboard is established.

So what could be wrong? Keyboard driver?
Hmm? the keyboard driver is a part of the Windows OS and is installed automatically while OS installation?
I would recommend following:
Go to device manager and extract the point Keyboard.
There you should see something like ?standard PS/2 keyboard?
If you will see a red cross near this device, then this means that the keyboard is disabled.
Usually you should be able to enable this again (in device manager).
If there is no red cross, then I recommend deleting this keyboard from the device manager list?then reboot the notebook. Usually the OS should recognize the removed device automatically and should install the driver too.

Check this.

By the way: it could be possible that you have received a wrong Recovery disk? this could explain the issues after the recover procedure?

Hi folks,

Posting this question for my neighbour as he now has no internet access as laptop not working - Satellite C660 running Win7.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Nigel

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.

I am not really providing any solution, but faced similar problem with my Satellite A300-1EI laptop, purchased in Dubai, UAE. I tried to make recovery discs through Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator. However, everytime, I got an error message. I tried with Verbatim, Philips DVD-R and lost several DVDs. Meanwhile on some net surfing, I found out that Toshiba DVD writer is a bit sensitive and try using Verbatim brand DVD-R. I tried with Verbatim 2 days ago and at the last moment when I was about to dance with joy that first DVD is created, received an erro message as below

*"The following issue occured while recording data to the disc.*
*The current process will be stopped.*

*A power calibration area error occurred.*
*Please check if the dics is scratched or dirty.*
*If so, please try again with a new disc.*

*(Error Code: 0E01B5-26-00037304)"*

Hi

Have you tried to use the HDD recovery function to restore the factory settings? Maybe after this you can create the recovery disk successfully.
You can start the HDD recovery feature if you go in advanced boot menu (F8) and select ?Repair my computer?.

Alternative you can restore the factory settings if you install Windows XP from a Microsoft disk and then you download and install all driver and tools from the Toshiba website step by step.

I have a 14-month old C660 (2 months out of warranty!) and the HDD has died quite suddenly.

* 3 days ago working fine
* 2 days ago, got stuck at 'Starting Windows'
* Tried to fix using a System Repair boot disk (DVD) but couldn't fix problem (ran overnight)
* Booted from DVD today, and now from command prompt, every 'dir' on c: takes 20 seconds and trying to copy files gives I/O error.

I am going to buy a new HDD and install, but is there a way to get Windows 7 back onto the disk?
There was no Windows disk supplied with the laptop... there WAS a recovery partition but that is dead too.

I don't want to buy a new copy of Windows when I already have a licence.

(I never did a full backup incl System, as the one and only time I tried to do that it failed to complete the process, killing many blank DVD-R's in the process).
I have most of my personal files backed up.

Thanks

Answer:Satellite C660 - how to install Windows on new disk?

The situation is pretty clear. You don?t have created recovery disc and now you have two options only:
1)you can order original Toshiba recovery disc and install original recovery image
2)you can obtain original Microsoft installation disc and install own OS

In first case check please http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB0202TA0000R01.htm

If you make decision to use option 2 than please note that your product key is useless and you must pay for new licence and code activation. Product key at the Microsoft sticker belongs to recovery image only.

If you have more questions you are welcome.

Done, and now the laptop does not work.

Toshiba recovery disc can be created with preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery media creator tool? ONLY.

For recovery DVD creation I recommend you to use DVD-R empty medias only.

So I bought a vista business recovery disk for my comp and wiped t.he hard drive. On install of the Vista I get a preinst5.swm missing on the first disk.

I looked online for this error and many people have had the same problem. No one seems to know what to do.

I installed Vista Home Premium from a Dell recovery disk with no problems, however, when I tried to change the product key to the one on the comp I got the key was not good for the vista hp version.

So what to do.
I think Toshiba makes a good product but the recovery disk they sent me for $30 was bad.

I was thinking I could copy the disk on another computer and copy a good version of preinst5.swm and try to make a good recovery disk, but I don't have a lot of confidence in Toshiba software.

Hello

That?s a long story, buddy?

It?s not easy to say what the reason is for this but for me it sounds like that there is something wrong with the HDD. In your case I would format the HDD before you run the recovery disk. You can do this with a Microsoft disk to format the whole HDD. After this try the recovery disk again.

If it doesn?t work you should check the HDD with a special HDD diagnostic tool like Drive Fitness Test. Use Google to find it, it?s freeware and takes only few minutes.

I presume HDD exchange was successfully. What you can do is to open BIOS settings and check if HDD is recognized properly.
Now you must install operating system. If you don?t have original recovery media you can install OS using Microsoft installation disc. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba download page - http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

I have purchased Toshiba laptop(C660-1CV) from a local dealer just before two days. I had loaded VMware along with couple of VMs and some other important software.

In spite of my company insisting for lenevo I had gone for Toshiba because I trust the brand and I have had real good experience with Toshiba. Today morning that is after two days of purchase of laptop the hard disk crashed and I got a black screen no OS prompt, nothing. My dealer said he cannot do anything I have to take it to Al Futtiam service center. The service center guy just re-connected the hard disk and it didn?t work, he straight away made a statement that hard disk needs to be replaced and it will another 4 to 5 days. He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay ?99 AED?. Isn?t that strange enough ??? My own laptop which is just 2 days old crashed and I have to pay for getting my data. The technical guy did not do any other troubleshooting except reconnecting the hard disk.

I want to escalate it to the right level in Toshiba. if anybody has any contacts in UAE region pass it on to me.

Answer:Satellite C660-1CV - hard disk crashed in 2 days

Hi pmavani,

I?m sorry to hear that that HDD died after 2 days that not normally but such things can happen, especially with HDD that is a mechanical part. But don?t worry this case is covered by warranty so you can get a new HDD for free from an authorized service provider and as the guy said it takes 4 or 5 days. That?s ok so the notebook can repaired within one week.

> He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay ?99 AED?. Isn?t that strange enough ???
No, that?s not strange enough. Warranty doesn?t cover backup, you have to do this yourself. That?s the reason why you should install and configure backup software before you do anything.

Answer:Re: Satellite C660/C660D will using recovery erase data on D partition?

Hi

From my knowledge using Recovery Disk would format the whole HDD and all partitions would be created again during this process.
This means that your data on D partition is not safe.

But from my experience the usage of HDD recover would format only the system (C) partition? not quite sure if this applies to all the Toshiba notebooks so possibly you should test this first time? in such case would recommend backup the data in case D partition would be erased.

Over a year ago i have changed to windows 10 (not aware that my laptop is not suitable for this)
It worked fine untill Microsoft started the Windows10 anniversary upgrade 1607.
each time this will result in unbootable system and in need of external recovery to window 10 version 1511.
blocking updates is not simple in Windows10.
I would like to revert to window 7.
The harddisk is error free and there are 4 partitons available:
Partition 1: System 399MB
Cannot use this to parttion install official windows7 from microsoft
Partition 2: Windows 232MB Primair
Partition 3: 786MB OEM reseverd
Partition 4: Data 232MB Primair

pressing 0 at startup does not reset to the original sw

Strange problem. My Satellite C660D-1FM was doing a bunch of updates from Microsoft (hadn't done any updates for ages as it was used by my daughter and not connected to the internet) and after they had completed it rebooted and I got the Toshiba splash screen and then nothing. Holding F8 gives the same problem, tried holding the '0' key while powering on and that was the same. Connected an external monitor and it's the same. I can get into the BIOS and everything looks fine.

So, thinking the hard drive might be faulty I fitted another hard drive and fully installed Win7 from a Microsoft DVD (SP1 and all updates) and everything works. I then thought I'd try and restore the laptop to default factory settings using the Toshiba recovery DVD's which Id created. All worked fine during the install, all 3 DVD's installed and it went through the setup procedure, laptop got to the end when it wanted to reboot, rebooted and now back to the same error - Toshiba splash screen is ok but then it just goes blank. To convince myself I wasn't going mad I then re-installed Win7 from my Microsoft DVD and it installs fine, does all updates and has worked all day today with no issue.

Anyone any idea what's going on?

Answer:Satellite C660 - blank screen after recovery image instalation

Hmmm... something like this should not happen.
Do you use recovery discs for the first time?
Have you noticed the same result on both HDDs?

Problem is that there is no much to do about that and there is no way to change anything while recovery installation runs or later when windows setup is in progress.

Try to set BIOS to default settings and simply try to install recovery image again.

Hi all

Just a query
My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).

As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

After own OS installation you cannot create recovery disc anymore and you can not install recovery image using HDD recovery option (F8 at start-up).

Best thing you can do now is to order original disc from Toshiba and use it for recovery image installation. It is definitely easiest way to have ?factory settings? again.
You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

Hi all, just tried to launch recovery media creator on the Toshiba board and the following ERROR CODE: 0d00f6-49-00000015 appears.
This goes after a few clicks on the mouse and the program starts.

Any ideas how to mend this?
Operating system is Windows 7 64bit my new shinny laptop.

any help would be great.

You have to test different DVD from different manufacturers.
Not all DVD from different manufacturers are compatible. There are big differences between the brands? So check and try other DVD

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 PSLB1A: Recovery disk not working - 0xc000000f error

Hi

You mean you cannot boot the notebook using the Toshiba Recovery disk which you have created?

Go to the BIOS and check if the CD/DVD drive is recognized. It should be listed on the first BIOS page.
If the CD/DVD drive is not listed then you should set the SATA mode to compatible and should save the changes.
After that try to boot again from the Recovery disk.

I also searched on the Toshiba European driver page for some info and found some details;

There is a firmware update for CD/DVD drive TS-L633A and TS-L633P.
This Firmware solve "Sometime not able to writing on DVD+R media".
The issue happens only DVD+R media, other kind of media have no problem.

The hard drive crashed so I replaced it. I am trying to use the recovery disk to take the computer to the "out of box configuration.

I am choosing to "recover" rather than erase the hard disk when given that choice. Then it copies files from the first disc and prompts me for the second one. After putting the second one in it continues to copy files. Eventually it shifts over to "now recovering" It does this and appears to be using the newly installed hard drive for something between 35-50% of the task. At that point I get an error message indicating "recovery error" and prompts me to press ok to shut down the computer and spits out the CD. The error message is coded 10-FC12-0002. I have tried 4 or 5 times with the same result.

Am I supposed to use the erase disk option first and then use recovery mode since this is a new hard drive? Or do I have a faulty recovery disk?

Any feedback or ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am getting no where at this point.

Answer:Satellite A135-S4666 - Recovery disk shows an error message

Hi

It?s not easy to say if it?s a recovery disk problem or if the new HDD is the problem. Have you tested a Microsoft disk for example? If the Microsoft disk works it seems that your recovery disk is scratchy and should be replaced. Otherwise the new HDD is causing this problem.

Check this to determine what is causing this problem!!

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505-S5990 and I had to do a system restore. I ordered the recovery disks from Toshiba and put disk number one in. This took me to the Toshiba recovery wizard I used the option to completly format the hard drive wiping all partitions so-on and so-fourth. I put in disk 2 when prompted and clicked next. All was going well untill the end when I received an error code F3-F200-0002 at which time the only option was to click next and then the system would shut down. I then tryed the restore again this time useing the restore factory defaults options on the restore disk. I put in disk 2 when prompted and hit next. I then received the error again at the end of the restore.

What can I do now?

Answer:Satellite L505-S5990 - Recovery Disk Error F3-F200-0002

Hi DustinB22,

I had a similar issue last month that the recovery disk didn?t work properly. First I thought the disks are not ok (scratched) but then I used a Microsoft Windows disk to format the HDD firstly. After this I tried the Toshiba recovery disk again and this worked now!!!
So you should try this too. As I wrote you can use a Microsoft disk to format the HDD or another tool. Maybe it works?

If not you can also install Windows from this Microsoft disk.
Check this!!!

Running diagnostics on my two-day old Satellite C660 shows a failure on the hard disc. Windows hard disc checker ran without failure.

Can I assume that this is a false indication by the Toshiba diagnostic? The one thread on this topic is not conclusive on this issue.

Thanks Fred

Answer:Satellite C660 - Diagnostic shows a failure on the hard disk

Hi frredi,

What diagnostic tool you mean? Is it the Toshiba diagnostic tool that shows an error on HDD?

If yes you should contact the seller of the notebook and ask for replacement notebook. Defective HDD sector you can always get but it?s not recommendable to save important data on it.

So just give it back to shop and take a new one. :)

Hello Forum - I hope someone can help.

My kids (PC people) run a C660-IST (two years old). I say 'run' - the machine is going at a snail's pace. Confession - their dad has only ever worked on Apple (I know, i know....) so [email protected] thrashing around trying to help them. With limited success.

I've found something called 'Computer' and it says:

Hard Disk Drives (3)

WINDOWS (C:) 81.3 GB free of 149 GB
Data (D:) 141 GB free of 148 GB
Microsoft Office Click-toRun 2010 (Protected) (Q:)

I had supposed that the kids had simply filled up the memory running games (Sims and Zoo Tycoon) but - looking at the memory available that doesn't seem to be the case.

So I ran the 'Diagnostic Tool' programme. Everything looked fine....until it ran the 'HARDDISK'. And it says 'FAIL' in the 'results' box.

That's as far as I've been able to get. Not sure why the 'FAIL' result is there. Not sure what the kids can have done to the machine for this to happen.

Two questions:

- would the 'HARDDISK FAIL' be the cause of the machine running so slowly?

and

- is there anything I can do to try and fix the problem?

Please be gentle with any response - PC management is NOT my forte!

Many thanks

Helpless Dad

Answer:Satellite C660 is running slow - hard disk 'fail'?

> would the 'HARDDISK FAIL' be the cause of the machine running so slowly?

Yes, a faulty HDD can be the reason for slow notebook performance.

> is there anything I can do to try and fix the problem?

There are some things which should be clarified.
If its an physical HDD problem, the only one real solution is: HDD replacement.
If the issue is related to bad sectors and files stored on the HDD, the solution might be much easier:
First of all I would recommend cleaning the system using CCleaner (freeware software)
You could delete the temporal stored files.
Additional you could defrag the HDD partitions .
Here a nice article from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx#fbid=opdomAEomx0

but finally if you would not notice any improvements, you could format the HDD and install the system again using the Toshiba recovery disk.

Hi All.

Satellite Pro L300-152, Vista 32 SP2.

This laptop was given to me to try to repair (another instance of Vista comitting suicide).
Having recovered the system (no re-install was required), I would like to create a recovery disk set for the owner.

However when I try to run the 'Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator' I get an 'Error' window with the following message 'An unexpected error ocurred. Please quit this application and restart it. ( Error Code: 1100C8-48-00000002 ). Naturally restarting the application generates another identical message.
Does anyone know what might be the cause of this error and how I might create a recovery disk set for this laptop.

Take care all.

Mike

Answer:Recovery Disk Creator Error Code: 1100C8-48-00000002. Satellite Pro L300-15

Hi

Usually this error message appears because of not compatible CD or DVD.
I think you should firstly check if there is an ODD firmware update.
On the Toshiba European driver page you could find firmware updates for different CD/DVD drives.

You should check your CD/DVD drive and if an compatible firmware would be available, then you should update this
If there is no firmware update, then you have to try different disks from different manufacturers in order to create a recovery disk,

I hope this is the right place to post this, but I think I have the same problem with my Satellite C650. It keeps wasting DVDs by stopping and saying that it cannot read file E:\ZZlmg\11544XSP.swm and gives an error code 020150-20-00000000. The file is on the DVD. I am using Verbatim DVD-R The Recovery Media Creator is trying to write the first disc and is at the point of verifying the data. Can you think of another explanation for this error other than the cheap DVD option? Thanks

Answer:Satellite C650 - Cannot create Recovery disk - error code 020150-20-00000000

Hi

There are two explanations;
Either the CD/DVD drive firmware is not up to date and does not contain any information about the used disks of the disks (CD or DVD) is not fully compatible.
As you know this happens and is not unusual.

So first of all check if an firmware update is available for your CD/DVD drive.
The Toshiba European driver page is the right place to look for that.
In more info you will find detail if the firmware has been released for your ODD.

If there is no firmware update for your CD/DVD drive, then you should test other disks?

Hi

I have tried this twice on brand new Verbatim DVD+R discs.

Any suggestions as to what causes this problem?

Question: I/O error (1117)

Hi there,
the hard disk of a friend of mines (with years of pictures on it) suddenly crashed and there is no way to access it.

When starting the laptop it says "missing operating system".
I put it into an external USB box, connected to another pc, windows shows the device among the USB devices, but it does not show it under my computer or disk management.
I tried already at least 30 different recovery utilities, none of them could find any partition or any file on it, altough they are able to show the disk configuration (number of sectors, size, etc.). Some of them gave the I/O error (1117).
I tried also to mount the disk under Linux, no success.
Latest temptative was to start the laptop with a DOS cd to run the DOS version of unerase, but it failed too. It simply says that the space under the disk is "unallocated" and that it can read any partition or file.

What else can I try before taking it to those very expensive recovery companies?

The file system should be NTFS, there was WIN XP Home installed.

Regards,
D.

We cannot discuss here about costs. It is country specific service and prices are different.
Best you can do is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

Answer:Flex 15 - Recovery Disk Fails

hi widmark,

Welcome to the Forums.

If the SSD that you're using is smaller than the stock HDD then this is likely the problem.

During re-imaging process, the drive is partitioned according to the pre-installed image on the machine (i.e., If a system has 1TB HDD (750GB partitioned on C:\, 25GB on D:\, etc.) and is preloaded with Win8.1 in UEFI mode)  the recovery media will automatically convert the drive to GPT and apply the OS configuration and partition structure respectively.

If you use a 256GB SSD, the partition structure will not be applied, thus causing the reimaging error. This also occurs if you use a recovery drive (see Nath-PC's post in this thread)

In addition, the recovery disc is not bootable if UEFI is enabled in the BIOS, thus the need to set it to legacy mode when booting a recovery disc. Once the recovery image is loaded, you will need to undo the changes that you've made in the BIOS for the machine to boot in UEFI mode.

Things that you can try:
1. Follow this guide on how to download and create a bootable Windows 8.1 USB Installer (see Option 1 & select USB flashdrive on Step 4).

Alternatively, you can also create an ISO file (see Option 1, Step 4) and follow this guide to manually create a UEFI Installer.

2. After creating the installer above, set these settings in the BIOS (if applicable):

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Boot Tab:

Hello There,

I recently purchased a Satellite C660/C660D everything is fine, apart from one or two minor issues (which this thread is about). Firstly, The laptop was and still is littered with loads of TOSHIBA random software, below is a list:

+TOSHIBA Assist+
+TOSHIBA Bulletin Board+
+TOSHIBA ConfigFree+
+TOSHIBA Disc Creator+
+TOSHIBA Face Recognition+
+TOSHIBA Flash Cards Support Utility+
+TOSHIBA Hardware Setup+
+TOSHIBA HDD/SSD Alert+
+TOSHIBA Media Controller+
+TOSHIBA Media Controller Plug-in+
+TOSHIBA Online Product Information+
+TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator+
+TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator Reminder+
+TOSHIBA ReelTime+
+TOSHIBA Service Station+
+TOSHIBA Supervisor Password+
+Toshiba TEMPRO+
+TOSHIBA Value Added Package+
+TOSHIBA Web Camera Application+

Is there a pre made ISO recovery image somewhere or do I have to make my own, because if I decide to unisntall some of these programs I might need it at a later date?

The second issue is with the TOSHIBA Accessiblity application which shows the FN keys, it does not seem to start. It worked the first day then I disabled all TOSHIBA applications from startup and I get the following error: "Registry is missing or may be broken.", I dont know why!

I have tried cleaning the registry, so the registry isnt broken.

*Thanks in Advance*

Answer:Satellite C660 - TOSHIBA Accessibility Error

Hi Humza,

I?m happy to hear that you?re an owner of Toshiba notebook too and you discovered the forum here. We can discuss everything about Toshiba notebooks, that?s interesting :)

I will try to help you to sort this out:

1.Yes, there is a premade recovery image to restore factory settings with all driver and tools on your notebook but important is you burn this image on a blank DVD using preinstalled recovery media creator. You will get a disk with an image of Windows with all drivers and tools => ?out of box settings?. So the same settings as you purchased the computer.

2.I think the FN keys don?t work anymore because you disabled some important Toshiba tools they are necessary for FN keys. For FN keys the startup items ?TOSHIBA Button Support? and ?TOSHIBA Flash Cards? are absolutely necessary so you should enable them and restart the computer.

My Satellite C660 CD/DVD ROM drive is not reading CDs. When checking my Device Manager, there is a problem identified:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".

How do I go about repairing this fault?

Hey,

This is a known issue and there are already many threads here in forum about error code 19 in device manager. Toshiba has already released an FAQ regarding this article:
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/FAQ82023A0000R01.htm

To get rid of this you have to delete the upper- and lowerfilters in Windows registry:

1.Start > Run > Regedit
2.Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

First off, hope this is in an appropriate forum.

Today, I turned on my PC to be met with a Windows startup repair window. After trying to find a solution (and failing), the pc turned off (I think it was meant to restart?). Well, I booted it up again, and it successfully made it into windows. I ran checkdisk, which appeared to fix a few things, but restarted into a startup repair window once more. Again, a fresh boot got the machine into windows. Basically, I can get into windows, on the second time, if not always the first.

Generally, it feels slightly sluggish when loading programs/the desktop since yesterday, and I've noticed that transferring files from my WD10EALX-009BAO to my WD20EARX-00PASBO seems slower than usual as well. The other thing I noticed, is that when Running a virus scan in Avast, it can't test all the files, and the reason Avast gives me is "Request could not be performed because of an I/O Device Error (1117)".

So basically, what I'm asking, is whether it is possible to accurately ascertain the 'health' of my drive, and weather whatever ails it is possibly curable. And, for future reference/drives, is there any kind of maintenance I should do to keep my drives healthy - like monthly checking for errors and bad sectors?

1. Yes, it is possible to accurately ascertain the health of your WD drives running the manufacturer's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS or Windows as appropriate.

2. Whether it is curable or not time only can tell. You may have to run the tests periodically on a schedule to ascertain any repair done earlier holds or the HDD continues to deteriorate. However it will be prudent to take away any HDD that has given rise to I/O errors from service and replace it.

3. If you are so paranoid , to ascertain the health of your HDDs you may periodically run the manufacturer's diagnostic/repair tool on a schedule as aforesaid.

In the present case, my advice will be to backup all data on the system drive and then replace it.

To test the drive as it is, first backup all data to another drive and then run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS. WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor

Answer:Error 1117 i/o - cannot boot AS5732Z laptop

Any standard 2.5" drive will suffice. Replacing a hard drive is surprisingly easy! There are many guides on Youtube etc. If you're not sure, try a local PC repair shop - shouldn't be too expensive! Or you could always treat yourself to a shiny new Acer

Answer:I forgot my administrator password on Satellite C660/C660

Hi

I assume you are talking about windows system password and not about BIOS password. Right?
It?s not very big problem if you forgotten the System password but if you mean BIOS password then you are in trouble because the BIOS password can be deleted just by an Toshiba ASP technicians?

So I assume you mean Windows password? so start the notebook and press F8
Now you can choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.
This would start a HDD recovery procedure which would reinstall the system? during the setup you can set anther admin password.

Of course there are some other methods but as far as I know this requires 3rd party software/tools or Win 7 DVD? so I think the HDD recovery is the fastest solution.

Hello All,

My laptop for some strange reason decided to stop working. The login screen failed to appear and it said something about there being a login visualization error - in short this error message seemed to appear in place of the login screen. It wouldn't go away.

So I thought I would just use the recovery disks? But two thirds of the way along the process, it grinds to a halt with the computer saying that it cannot recover either the 4th or 5th partition possibly due to corrupt elements (CRS or something similar). Obviously now the computer hard drive has been wiped.

I have various recovery disks which I have tried and none of them seem to work. Can anyone suggest something to help?

Cheers,

Ben

Answer:Recovery disk fails due corrupt elements

Hi Ben,

One important information I miss in your posting... What notebook model you have exactly?

And I?m wondering why you have various recovery disks. Normally you need only one recovery disk for each notebook.

Anyway, what happens if you install Windows from a Microsoft disk? Maybe your recovery disk is scratched?
