HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

Question: HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum:

Being the idiot I am, I changed my WIndows Login password and since I use very long passwords, I have no idea what I changed it to. Guessing is out of the question.

So I powered on my laptop while holding the 0 key, which brought me to the Windows Boot Manager screen. I pressed F8 on Windows 7 for advanced options and opted for 'Recovery Mode' as I have used this in the past to install the OS from scratch.

It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.

Any advice on what I can do?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

>It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.
On this step you must enter your Windows login name and login password. Without right password you will not be able to start HDD recovery installation.

There is second option to install recovery image. You can do it now using recovery DVD. Have you created it using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator?

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me or knows what to do. I have Satellite C660-15r it was turned off properly but when put back on it came up with start windows normally as if it has been interrupted, I clicked ok to that but instead of loading it has gone to do some sort of recovery only it hasn't been able to complete this and instead has said there is nothing to recover.

It is know stuck at this and will not go any further says to get system admin to log in however its not allowing to log in or do anything apart from shut down and restart, I have been trying to factory reset but it will not work at all I have tried many attempts with 0 and other options i have been told this doesn't work but I can get up f2 and f8 on load up all that works ok but I cannot find any option to be able to factory reset. it gives me options to recover but they take me to the same screen with no improvements and safe mode will not work.

I hope someone can help me I will be so grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Satellite C660-15r stucks and no recovery possible

At first I must say that recovery option is available if notebook has ?factory settings?. After reading your posting I don?t know if you still use original OS installation that you got with your notebook or maybe OS preinstalled on your own.

I presume you didn't create recovery media (DVD) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator, right?
In your situation usage of recovery disc could be easiest way to fix this and install original recovery image.

Can you please post exact notebook model?

I need some help for my sons laptop which is the Satellite Pro C660-1LR.

The hard drive in this laptop completely died, i did not create a recovery disc for this laptops system.
I have purchased a new hard drive which is installed..however as you have guessed i have no access to reinstalling a OS, this laptop runs on windows 7.

I am not really tech savvy so if anyone can advise me please make explain in idiot proof format!! I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-1LR - New HDD but no recovery disc

> I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.
Problem is that you don't have many options about that.
If you want to have ?factory settings? again you need recovery installation disc. You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx Of course it is not for free but, in my opinion, definitely the best solution.

You can buy Microsoft installation disc and install own version. You must buy valid licence for it.
In this case you must install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities additionally one by one.

Just in case that you can get this Microsoft installation and licence for free you can save some money.

Believe me the best solution is original recovery disc order.

I don't know how you have removed OS from partition C and what have you done exactly and I?m a little bit sceptic this will work but you can try it anyway.

I ordered a set of 2 Toshiba recovery CD's and received them yesterday in order to fix this laptop from a Windows breakdown...

The problem arising at start up is that Windows 7 isn't starting up plus that the hard disk doesn't show in the BIOS (the DVD-drive does) and after the boot sequence the following message comes up: ?Reboot and select proper boot device or insert root media in selected boot device? Someone suggested the drive is broken or the cables to the same detached or lose.

The owner says, that the error first appeared after McAfee offered to "remove 15 errors found on the disk". The laptop has never been opened.

When running the recovery CD 1 the boot sequence starts the recovery but initially shows two pop-ups that indicate that the hard disk cannot be found.

First error message - ERROR: IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO \\. \PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.

Second error message says something like - There is no access to disk #0 or the RAID configuration isn't correct!

After accepting both messages the prompt hands out the error that also appears in this thread...

...and stops at this line...

X:\ windows\ system32 >

...reporting that the recovery failed.

I have fooled around with the advices in this thread...

[http://superuser.com/questions/318322/... Read more

Answer:Recovery CD's do not recover Satellite C660-1WN

(...continued from first post...)

Left to be said is that I also - before I ordered the recovery CDs - ran the second diagnostic DOS tool in the first table to check the disk and got the following report...

- HDD power cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD interface cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD master-slave setting is incorrect

...and equally that no disk could be detected.

My question is now..., what is wrong here? Is it the physical disk that might be the problem? Is it the software? MBR? Can the latter be restored by some command in the prompt? If, then how? Would it be easier to erase the whole disk and then use the recovery CDs? Or won't this work since the recovery CDs can only work with the recovery information on the disk (I assume that this information is only physically on the disk not on the recovery CDs, isn't this correctly understood)?

I am looking forward to any input and help. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone !
I have Toshiba Sattelite C660-1J9 laptop, and it's been working fine - until a day my HDD died. Now it's producing some weird sounds on startup, and no HDD visible in BIOS. It's not a problem for me to buy new HDD and replace it, but I'd like to restore licensed Windows I had with laptop - so I need to place recovery partition on new HDD somehow. Is it possible and where I can find this recovery partition image ?
Thanks in advance !

Hi

is there a way to make the recovery disks install win7 x32 instead of x64 (Satellite Pro C660-2JR)

Answer:Recovery disks creation for Satellite Pro C660-2JR

If your notebook was delivered with 64bit version you can create recovery disc for this preinstalled version only. With other words, recovery image saved on recovery partition will be saved on empty DVD disc. Nothing more than that.

If you want to use 32bit OS you must check if your notebook model is supported for it and install own version.

Using the Toshiba original recovery discs the process gets partway through and then gives the following messages...

Error restoring image

ERROR: ImageX could not apply Win7 V:\HDDRecovery\SWImg\15489XSP.swm Index 2 from HDD to C:!

Can anybody advise?!

Answer:Cannot install recovery image on Satellite C660

Unfortunately there is no some ?workaround? to force recovery image installation to run properly.
All you can do at the moment is to set BIOS to default settings and try to use recovery disc again.
Be sure disc is clean.

Do you use recovery discs for the first time?

E:\ is the name of the DVD drive. I use Verbatim DVD-R media, I have the laptop on power supply during the burning process and I tried twice with two different discs and got the same result. How can I fix this problem?

Answer:Satellite C660-121 can't verify the recovery disc

Hello Voger

I have created numerous recovery DVD on several Toshiba notebooks and have never noticed something like this. I have used DVD-R discs only and brands were Verbatim or TDK.

Unfortunately I cannot give you answer what does this message means but you must try to repeat DVD creation. If possible try with TDK.
If the same happen again I recommend you to recovery your notebook using HDD recovery option and try to create recovery discs again.

Sorry but I don?t see any other possibility at the moment.

Hi folks,

Posting this question for my neighbour as he now has no internet access as laptop not working - Satellite C660 running Win7.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.

Hello,

A month ago I purchased a Toshiba C660-1FE. After three weeks my HD broke down. I bought a new HD from Western Digital and replaced the broken HD. As I did not make an recovery image of my HD, I had to order the Product recovery discs off the Toshiba website (3 discs, of which disc 1 and 3 were the only one's required for installation).

Now, I have the problem that my laptop keyboard does not work. I am currently using a USB keyboard and mouse to replace my keyboard and touchpad of the laptop.

The laptop keyboard works fine in BIOS. Therefore, I hope it's just a driver problem.

I have:

tried finding and installing lots of drivers on from the toshiba website, no result.
tried changing settings in the bios (usb enable/disable).
tried to fix the problem by re-installing the entire computer again several times.

The keyboard seems to work until windows loads. When the system is starting up I can press caps lock and num lock and the green lights come on. This all stops working once the windows startup symbol appears.

Perhaps a second problem in the device manager: under the display-adapter, 2 subcategories have exclamation marks: it says Mobile Intel(R) 4 series express chipset family twice! I can't seems to fix these with any drivers I can find either. When I check the settings I have this message (google translate since it was in dutch):

Answer:After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Hi

Keyboard works in BIOS? this means that the keyboard hardware should be ok and the connection between the motherboard and keyboard is established.

So what could be wrong? Keyboard driver?
Hmm? the keyboard driver is a part of the Windows OS and is installed automatically while OS installation?
I would recommend following:
Go to device manager and extract the point Keyboard.
There you should see something like ?standard PS/2 keyboard?
If you will see a red cross near this device, then this means that the keyboard is disabled.
Usually you should be able to enable this again (in device manager).
If there is no red cross, then I recommend deleting this keyboard from the device manager list?then reboot the notebook. Usually the OS should recognize the removed device automatically and should install the driver too.

Check this.

By the way: it could be possible that you have received a wrong Recovery disk? this could explain the issues after the recover procedure?

Hello,

on the laptop TOSHIBA C660, replaced the hard drive and, as a fact, the OS flew down (Windows 7 SP1 HB x 64).
Installed not licensed, there was no way out, on the Microsoft website, to download the image, the key from the laptop is not suitable.

Not a licensed image, there was no desire to put, the assembly is an assembly, naturally installed such an operating system behaved badly, buggy.

Done, and now the laptop does not work.
In the service center installation of OS and drivers costs 3500 rbl.

Offensively. So I'm looking for help on the forum.

Toshiba recovery disc can be created with preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery media creator tool? ONLY.
So I don?t understand why you use Microsoft and Nero software.

Have you checked User?s manuals document and chapter about recovery media creation?

For recovery DVD creation I recommend you to use DVD-R empty medias only.

Hi!

I have a laptop from a client, that is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-239, and i'm having a strange issue.

The original hard disk failed, and as the laptop is out of warranty, we bought a new hard disk, and ordered the recovery media to this model, from our local toshiba repair assistance.

After the setup copied the files to the disk, the imageX fails when restoring the image files with the error:

"the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

The hard disk is new, and i tried also with more 2 hard disks, and also with an external cd-rom drive.

I talked with the support from the local repair assistance, and they told me this occurs because the new hard drive ins't compatible with the recovery media?!

One of the new hard disks i tried, was the exact same model than the original hard disk, and the error still occurs, so the hard disk can't be the problem.

Is there any change of the recovery media is corrupted?

Could also be a motherboard problem?

Thank you

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-239 - Error restoring from recovery media

> Is there any change of the recovery media is corrupted?
Of course this is possible.
In case the HDD is OK, the recovery media could be corrupted.

>Could also be a motherboard problem?
I don?t think so?. I presume the HDD is recognized in BIOS properly and the error message says something about corrupted directory. I guess the disk directory is meaning and I think media should be replaced.

Hi,

i am having a kind of software glitch on my laptop. when i turned it on, it showed a message with options either to launch startup repair (recommended) or start windows normally. i chose the first option as that seem to be the recommended option and i thought this might repair if there was any damage. however, after the repair process was completed, it showed an error message with steps to install Windows. i am getting this message now everytime i turn my laptop on!

Since i have the software pre-isntalled on my laptop, i do not have the Windows 7 disc with me. this is really strange as i am unsure why this happened.

Although my laptop is covered with the warranty, i am not sure if it covers the software warranty too?

Please can some one advise me on the best way out of this problem.

its really very painful and irritating to deal with this, as its been just 5 months since i bought this laptop.

Answer:Windows 7 issue on my Satellite C660-1F1

> however, after the repair process was completed, it showed an error message with steps to install Windows. i am getting this message now everytime i turn my laptop on!

Looks like something has gone wrong with the installed OS.
Not sure why but it seems that you need to reinstall the windows once again.

> ince i have the software pre-isntalled on my laptop, i do not have the Windows 7 disc with me. this is really strange as i am unsure why this happened.

You did not receive any disks because the notebook supports the HDD recovery and additionally there was/is a option to create a own recover disk.
You could use the Recover disk creator software in order to create such disks?
But not sure if this would be possible now because of the error?

So would recommend starting the HDD recover as described here.

Hi all!

I have Toshiba Satellite C660-1GK for about year and a half. After 6 months my hard disk drive died.

First the laptop got really slow and then started the famous clicking sound from the disk.
I've made backup and checked the drive with Hirens tools. Toshiba diag won't even read it, S.M.A.R.T. said that his health is poor (30% or so), bad sectors started popping out.. so I've took the laptop to my ASP.

They replaced the disk and then, 13 months later (a week ago) the same story! Disk health went even lower (was at 11%) and bad sectors started jumping out like maniacs.
Again a trip to ASP.

I've got my laptop today with a new disk. After reading posts on this forum, I'm worried that it's or motherboard/power supply problem or we're just all with bad luck with drives.

I just can't accept that disks randomly die every 4-12 months as an answer. My last disk on HP laptop lasted 4 years! I have about five more months of warranty and I'm really not happy with situation. This laptop is on my work desk, has it's own station with a nice, big fan so it's not overheating - basically I've took it out of house last September.

I'm careful with it! But if this drive dies before end of year, maybe it's time to get a new laptop.
Not Toshiba this time :(

Please, do you have any thoughts, advices..?

Answer:Satellite C660-1GK - HDD partition C issue

Hi

Some years ago i purchased an notebook from another manufacturer.
My first HDD died after more than 2 years of usage. I bought another one, replaced the old HDD and the new HDD died after 4 month of usage.

Any HDD will die sooner or later because its expendable part? it?s a matter of HDD usage and matter of how you handle the unit.

In my opinion it?s a bad luck? of course its always pity if an HDD start to malfunction but I?m afraid there are no many options to prevent it.
Of course you could switch to an SSD drive which is much stable in use. I did it some month ago? I purchased the 250GB SSD drive and replaced the internal HDD

Hello,

i have this notebook just about 2 months, so the solution of this problem cant be that my notebook is old and inside is dust..
if am i just surfing on internet, temperature of notebook is about 40-60 degress, but if am i gaming it goes quickly up (65-75)
- maybe after 2 hours gaming temperature goes up and i must quit game.
If temperature is about 75 degress, computer started to be noisy and i think it goes down..

What i have to do?
Thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite C660-11W - overheating issue

After reading your posting I don?t know what the problem is. The temperature you mentioned in your posting is not on critical level so I think there is no reason for panic.

When you want to play the game, close all useless applications, switch to high performance power plan and be sure notebook is placed properly on the desk. Cooling fans should not be blocked and notebook must be able to ?take a breath?.

Until there is no ?unexpected switch off? there is no reason for panic.

I am having an issue with the keyboard on my Satellite c660 laptop, part number: PSC1LE.
The best way I can describe it is as a stuttering problem because it comes and go's (fine for a few hours, then not for a short while).

The problem is that for reasons unknown to me I keep encountering a problem where the A, N and Enter keys do not work when pressed. Occasionally pressing the key repeatedly (they aren't jammed) just makes the letter come out, but I can't keep pressing the key five or six times to get one letter. Just to mention, I have not spilled anything on the keyboard.

I have done full anti-virus and spyware scans but have found no issues.
I have this evening done all of the windows updates available to me, however it doesn't seem to have done the trick.

After restarting the device following the updates all worked well for about 15 minutes, until the same three keys stopped working again. On this occasion it lasted only for a couple of minutes, and now I am writing this with the same keyboard.

Note: I am not using the original keyboard. I changed the board due to minor material damage but had it done privately.
However this was done the better part of a year ago and has worked perfectly since being installed, until this new issue occurred in the last few weeks.

If anyone has any further recommendations or suggestions as to what may be the cause or any solutions then please share them.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Keyboard issue

I think you would understand that nobody is able to say why your keyboard malfunctions.
Only if the notebook hardware has been checked/scanned, it would be possible to say what?s wrong here?
But generally speaking there is a good workaround to diagnose the problem.

You could connect the external USB keyboard to the notebook and could check if the same problems with the mentioned buttons will occur.

In case the external USB keyboard would work properly, I think that your internal keyboard is the troublemaker? in such case you would need to replace the keyboard once again.

Hi I have just recently been provided a Satellite C660 for my further education, though I do believe in my haste to get it set up how I like to set up my computers I might of turned off the hot-keys now reading about on this forum I have found that to make them work again I will need to allow TOSHIBA Button Support to run at start up, but no matter how hard i try to find it on msconfig it no longer seems to be there, any one have any ideas about where I could find it on the C drive?

Though one of the strangest things I have noticed about this problem is that the volume hot-keys still work perfectly its just the rest of them.

EDIT

Just to let other people out there know I think I have solved my problem, here is the process I used to fix the hot-key issue.

Start menu - -> write msconfig in the search box on vista or windows 7 (if using XP type it into the run box) --> go to start up --> look for KeNotify Application and select it to run at start up.

There you have it it seemed to fix my issue so I hope it helps you out.

Hi there,

I have purchased a Satellite C660-17J and occasionally when I turn it on (holding the power button for 2 or three seconds and then releasing) - it doesn't seem to power on properly eg - fan starts - power light comes on - but not screen. If I hold the power button again it goes off. Then if I try again it will come on but the date and time resets itself to 2008.

Any ideas or will I have to send it back to Amazon as faulty? (could do without doing that!).

Generally speaking I must say this is no normal behavior and in my opinion it?s something wrong with hardware itself. So I would contact an authorized service provider in your country and ask the guys to check your notebook what?s wrong with it because hardware repair is for free due warranty time ;)

Hey Guys,

I've been having an on and off issue with my touchpad for at least a couple of months now. I've tried doing the function +F9 thing with little effect. I also re-downloaded the synaptics driver which seems to make it work for a little while but then it started working only sporadically.

Currently my touchpad works some of the time, if it fails at first pressing Ctrl Alt Del and then Esc seems to make it work for a little while longer but after that it simply stops working. I'm a student and not having a fully functioning laptop is often a great hindrance so any help would be great.

Best,

Answer:Satellite Pro C660 - on and off issue with the Touchpad

Hi

My first question is: when did you notice this touchpad issue.

I mean, the Sat Pro C660 is an older notebook and if this issue did not appear from first day of purchase, then something has affected the touchpad functionality in the past.

The question is: is there something wrong with software or maybe touchpad module.
I think this can be answered only settings the notebook back to factory state.
If you recover the notebook using Toshiba recover disk, you will get exactly the same state like at the first day of purchase.

If touchpad would still not work properly, well then there is some hardware problem

When my wife got off the plane a baggage handler helped her by pushing her mother in the wheelchair and dragging one of the bags behind him allowing my wife to take care of the rest of the luggage. Unfortunately the laptop that was sitting on top of that bag decided that it didn't like the ride, it jumped off the bag and tried to enter the terminal under its own battery power.

There is no visible damage to the laptop as it was inside the laptop bag and no cracks or anything on the screen. When the laptop turns on, the screen can remain blank, flicker or it will display the log on and desktop but instead of showing white it displays a pinkish purple, only white is affected not off white. Other colours display correctly although they do look as if the display is set to 256 colour or using the wrong driver.

I connected an external monitor to it and that works fine with full colour. If the laptop screen flickers a light tap to the back of it will get it to stay on but the colour isn't corrected. I am thinking that it may be just a loose connection or broken wire between the screen and the motherboard but not sure if the change in colour would be caused by this.

Satellite C660 (PSC1LA-00J001) looks brand new but I don't think it would be worth taking in to get fixed.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

It took me 2 1/2 hours to post this exact same message because somewhere in there is profanity or inappropriate language. :(

Answer:Satellite C660 - screen issue

Hello

On this virtual way it is not possible to say for sure what is wrong there. Your notebook must be disassembled and all must be checked. Graphic card seems to be OK so there must be some problem with connectors, cable or with the display itself.
>Satellite C660 (PSC1LA-00J001) looks brand new but I don't think it would be worth taking in to get fixed.
Why not? Even display exchange is not so problematic. Googling around you will find many online stores where you can order new display, if necessary. Even on eBay you can get it for reasonable price.

If you don't have experience with this stuff I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider or some independent IT service and ask for help. Check which options are available and how much you must pay for repair.

I have a brand-new Satellite Pro C660. It worked fine for a day, now it won't load windows. I didn't get around to creating the recovery disks as I've only had it a few hours (yes, yes, I know, should have been the first thing I did). All the data is present (but backed up to USB just in case) and I can see the HDDREcovery folder with all data intact. However, I can't run the app to create recovery disks. Does anyone know how to extract the images and create the media using only the command prompt? (I can get into command prompt by booting from a friend's Win 7 disk). All boot options from the laptop's own drives fail. It says "Windows Failed to Load", and I try Startup Repair but it doesn't find any errors. Any help/thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro C660 - How to make recovery disk with command prompt?

Hey,

It?s not possible to create recovery disk with command prompt. You have to use the Toshiba recovery media creator on Windows.

Now it?s too late for you but you can order such a disk here:

Over a year ago i have changed to windows 10 (not aware that my laptop is not suitable for this)
It worked fine untill Microsoft started the Windows10 anniversary upgrade 1607.
each time this will result in unbootable system and in need of external recovery to window 10 version 1511.
blocking updates is not simple in Windows10.
I would like to revert to window 7.
The harddisk is error free and there are 4 partitons available:
Partition 1: System 399MB
Cannot use this to parttion install official windows7 from microsoft
Partition 2: Windows 232MB Primair
Partition 3: 786MB OEM reseverd
Partition 4: Data 232MB Primair

pressing 0 at startup does not reset to the original sw

Hi all

Just a query
My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).

As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

After own OS installation you cannot create recovery disc anymore and you can not install recovery image using HDD recovery option (F8 at start-up).

Best thing you can do now is to order original disc from Toshiba and use it for recovery image installation. It is definitely easiest way to have ?factory settings? again.
You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

So is the data on D safe if I use recovery?

thanks

Answer:Re: Satellite C660/C660D will using recovery erase data on D partition?

Hi

From my knowledge using Recovery Disk would format the whole HDD and all partitions would be created again during this process.
This means that your data on D partition is not safe.

But from my experience the usage of HDD recover would format only the system (C) partition? not quite sure if this applies to all the Toshiba notebooks so possibly you should test this first time? in such case would recommend backup the data in case D partition would be erased.

Hi,

1st time forum poster so be gentle please!

My mum has just brought a Toshiba laptop and it's pretty decent to be fair. Taking a quick look at it though i noticed the recovery partition (that comes with most laptops now) is labelled "D:/Data and is 232GB in size. Seems a bit on the large side for me and wondering if it is incorrect?

Have got a screenshot and if someone could confirm either way i'd be most grateful. Can i attach screenshots?

Thanks in advance

Strange problem. My Satellite C660D-1FM was doing a bunch of updates from Microsoft (hadn't done any updates for ages as it was used by my daughter and not connected to the internet) and after they had completed it rebooted and I got the Toshiba splash screen and then nothing. Holding F8 gives the same problem, tried holding the '0' key while powering on and that was the same. Connected an external monitor and it's the same. I can get into the BIOS and everything looks fine.

So, thinking the hard drive might be faulty I fitted another hard drive and fully installed Win7 from a Microsoft DVD (SP1 and all updates) and everything works. I then thought I'd try and restore the laptop to default factory settings using the Toshiba recovery DVD's which Id created. All worked fine during the install, all 3 DVD's installed and it went through the setup procedure, laptop got to the end when it wanted to reboot, rebooted and now back to the same error - Toshiba splash screen is ok but then it just goes blank. To convince myself I wasn't going mad I then re-installed Win7 from my Microsoft DVD and it installs fine, does all updates and has worked all day today with no issue.

Anyone any idea what's going on?

Answer:Satellite C660 - blank screen after recovery image instalation

Hmmm... something like this should not happen.
Do you use recovery discs for the first time?
Have you noticed the same result on both HDDs?

Problem is that there is no much to do about that and there is no way to change anything while recovery installation runs or later when windows setup is in progress.

Try to set BIOS to default settings and simply try to install recovery image again.

Please can anyone help. I tried using my recovery disks to restore my notebook when it kept failing to start properly. The disks did not work so I purchased a set of disc from Toshiba on this website. I still have the same problem.

Is it the hard drive failing or something else?

If I purchase a new hard drive will the recovery disks work if the hard drive is not exactly the same as the one that came out?

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery disk fails error 1117

Hi

Did you think about the HDD?
It could be a HDD malfunction that does not allow you to install the system.

I recommend checking the HDD for some possible issues.

There is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test. You can use it for HDD check.
Google simply to get the software.

Hi all

I was updating BIOS on TOSHIBA SATELLITE C660-13R from windows 7 64 bits. Downloaded driver from toshiba web. Half way the installation laptop freezes. I have left it for 40 mins to run but it did not get back to normal state. As motherboard fan has started to move on high speed I decided to take battery out. In result when I power back my laptop I have 1 beep from the motherboard and black screen.

Can some one help me please ?

Answer:Satellite C660-13R - BIOS update issue

Obviously the BIOS update procedure has failed. Something went wrong during the update process and it looks like the EMRPOM module has not been flashed properly.
This is the reason why the notebook does not work anymore.

Possible solution?
Well, if EMPROM isn?t damage, it should be possible to re-flash the BIOS module once again using special BIOS version and BIOS crisis disk.
Usually the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country should be able to re-flash the module using such crisis disk.

I read also in this forum that some people managed to re-flash the EPROM module using some 3rd party crisis disk found somewhere in the internet? but this did not work always?
So probably the ASP will be your last resort?

However, use the forums advanced search option to find related threads about the BIOS crisis disk? could be interesting for you

Last year I purchased a Satellite C660-1G3 laptop from UK; even today, I am using the factory settings, and running the originally installed Windows 7 OS. The following is the issue that I started facing yesterday onwards:
- Even when the battery is well-plugged and the laptop running, the Power Meter indicates a falling charge level, with the "Plugged in, Not Charging" notification. The orange LED keeps blinking

- However, when I completely shut-down the laptop, without touching anything (not even touching the adapter or the power cord), the orange LED indicating battery charging process stops blinking and becomes stable

- On re-starting the laptop, for about 1 minute or so, the battery appears to be charging (orange LED not blinking and "Plugged in, Charging" message). However, soon the orange LED again starts blinking and the nuisance message again comes up

A couple of things:
- the battery seems to be working fine and charging properly when laptop is shutdown (in fact, till a couple of days back, the battery used to show 2:30 hours of time available on 100% charged level)
- is there some issue with the Operating system? no idea on that

can experts help me in resolving this issue? I do not really want to approach the Service Center due to long distance involved.

regards
- Biren

Answer:Re: Satellite C660-1G3 - "Plugged in, Not Charging" issue

Hi Biren

Not sure if I can help you but I would like to provide you some tips.

1) Check if your BIOS is up to date. If Toshiba European driver page provides newer version, then update the BIOS. Additionally set the BIOS to default pressing F9 and save changed pressing F10.
2) Try to calibrate the battery. To calibrate the battery you should discharge the battery completely and charge the battery again. Repeat this procedure 2-3 times in the row.
3) Remove the battery and AC adaptor and press power button (30 sec long) then connect both parts and check if the LED would start blinking again.

Finally I think that the notebook should be tested using new, good working battery. But if the issue would still persist, then I would assume that your motherboard might be affected.

Good day, fellow Toshiba notebook owners.

I have a little trouble upgrading my BIOS to a "newer" (according to Tempro) version.
I just installed the Tempro application, and it detected that my BIOS needs an upgrade, so I naturally downloaded the "new" BIOS. Everything went fine, but when I tried to install it, a message popped up in the install window:

"*The program will be closed!* There is an error occurred, please check below items. Bios version above 190. Battery capacity more than 10%. AC is attached."

No matter what I do, I get the same error, over and over again. I looked the problem up before I posted this thread, and other people encountered it, but, unlike my case, advices like "Close all background applications", "Charge your battery", or "Make sure the AC is attached" really helped them.

I tried closing everything, my battery is always fully charged, as I rarely disconnect the AC adapter, and, of course, the AC connection issue is not the cause, since it is almost always plugged in.

I checked my BIOS version in +msinfo32.exe+ and it is 1.90 already, but I remember upgrading it months ago (sooner than the release date of this last version), and if, hypothetically, I have the last version already installed, why doesn't Tempro acknowledge it and keeps alerting me over a non-existent issue?

Maybe there is something wrong with Tempro, but I just need to be sure before... Read more

Answer:Satellite C660 - 1C7: BIOS upgrade issue

Hi

Tempro notify you about new uploaded drivers or BIOS?
The Toshiba European driver page provides all the drivers and BIOS files and the latest BIOS version 1.90-win has been uploaded at 04.06.2012 and therefore you received this notification by Tempro software.

Who knows why they uploaded this file once again.. but fact is that your BIOS is up to date and therefore you cannot update the BIOS once again using the one and the same version.

I have been using a foldable keyboard and a remote keyboard and have been having problems:

1.Characters not showing when typed.
2.Cursor jumping from typing position to another place usually outside the box that I am typing in.
3.Characters repeating while typing.
4.Actions ie Backspace not operating.

These problems do not seem to happen in Gmail and are not happening as I type this.
The problems have occurred so far in Google Calendar,a text doco and login to a site.
The problem did occur with the on board keyboard once so I am wondering if it is a malfunction or a virus.

Any ideas ?.

I tried several DVD's but NOGO each time halfway the second DVD it hangs.

I really need to create these recovery DVD's because Im going to upgrade the laptop to run a Windows Server 2012 install for development purposes.

I thought this would take just a minimum amount of time but... of course...

Any thoughs on any way to get this stuff working?

Answer:Satellite C660-1DG - Toshiba Media Creator Recovery fails creating 2nd DVD

So I connected my external DVD writer (NEC ND-3500AG) (firmware 2.1A) and took THE SAME DVD and burned it: presto: no problems: 0 validation errors

So I deduce that the internal DVD writer (TSSTcorp TS-L633C) (firmware TF20) is chunky.

I am still in warranty but... is it any use?

Hello,

sorry for my English level, I'm French

I have an issue without solution with my Satellite C660 (for the moment i hope!) I downloaded the software google sketchup 8, dedicated to the architecture drawing, but it doesnt work, I always have a bug message informing that it is necessary to update de drivers of the graphic card (According to google support it seems that OPENGL functions should be implemented in the drivers of my laptop)

So I have downloaded the last available drivers for the configuration I have ( Intel HD graphics for pentium, windows 7 64 bits) ;

the link ( french website, the one for Intel is not currently available, it is an .exe document)

http://www.touslesdrivers.com/php/constructeurs/telechargement.php?v_code=37057&v_langue=fr

I have tried to manually update de graphic card driver with the device manager menu (graphics card > update the drivers button> manual file.exe selection ), but at the end there is no update, I only have a very quick message informing that windows has determinated that the drivers are already updated.

Actually there is no changes on the drivers (still the same date of the pilotes 28/07/2010 in the graphics card properties) and sketchup is still out of work

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I have more that 12 hours trying to find a way out to install the dispaly driver because the standard VGA driver that windows 7 (32 bit) installed is very poor and i cant running any games or playing video smoothly

best regards

Answer:Satellite C660-M21G SM bus controller and display driver installation issue

From my knowledge the Satellite C660-M21G belongs to the PSC1SE series.
I?m wondering where did you find the right display driver for this series?
The notebook seems to support the NVIDIA GeForce 315M

I checked the Toshiba European driver page and not all Win 7 32bit drivers are released on the European driver page? I think you tried to install wrong or not compatible graphic card driver and therefore this error message appeared while installing the drivers.

But it seems that Win 7 64bit driver is available for this series therefore I would recommend testing the driver for Win 7 64bit.
The SM bus controller might be the Card reader and in such case you should install the Card Reader Controller driver from Realtek. There is also an Win 7 64bit driver version available on European driver page?

Test it simply?

Don't know if anyone can help me but I'm losing the will to live.

I've got this laptop, the OS corrupted and basically failed due to a malware infection. I never had the recovery disks so I've clean installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit twice in the space of 3 days because each time, Windows Update will not work. It simply sits on checking for updates and never finishes. I've tried EVERY solution going - ive reset windows update, done all the fix it programs supplied by microsoft to no avail.

As I said, this is a totally clean install, no anti virus, no 3rd party firewall, updates attempted via both ethernet and wifi. Am I missing a driver of some sort? There are no exclamation marks or warnings in device manager?!

It's doing my head in. What am i doing wrong?!

One observation, both installs have required me to activate via phone, it wouldn't work via the internet?! Is this related in any way?
Drivers installed:
Chipset
Video
Audio
LAN
WLAN
Touchpad

I got them off this page: http://www.toshiba.co.uk/innovation/...untry=8&page=1

Is there any that I'm missing that are important?

Thanks in advance!

If not, you could download this from here:

Otherwise I recommend you to check the MS knowledge base regarding the Windows 7 update issues.

You don’t’ use the Toshiba image and therefore this isn’t Toshiba notebook problem but system issue.

Hi,

Can someone please help,

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D for my nephew, We have forgotten the administrator password and we don't have password reset disk is there anyway around this.

Thanks

Answer:I forgot my administrator password on Satellite C660/C660

Hi

I assume you are talking about windows system password and not about BIOS password. Right?
It?s not very big problem if you forgotten the System password but if you mean BIOS password then you are in trouble because the BIOS password can be deleted just by an Toshiba ASP technicians?

So I assume you mean Windows password? so start the notebook and press F8
Now you can choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.
This would start a HDD recovery procedure which would reinstall the system? during the setup you can set anther admin password.

Of course there are some other methods but as far as I know this requires 3rd party software/tools or Win 7 DVD? so I think the HDD recovery is the fastest solution.

When I first got this product, before opening I thought that all the 500gb would go to the first partition, but then I saw that the recovery partition has half of the 500gb just for recovery which is unnessecery.

But I had no problem with this at the time, and used the recovery partition(after saving to a disk) for ubuntu so I could have a dual boot.

But now I've came to realise that the games I'm downloading are taking more and more room up on my C drive. The problem I have is that I can shrink my recovery partition and enlarge the C drive.

Does anyone know a work around?

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-225: Shrinking recovery partition englarge C partition

You will need an 3rd party software to shrink the recovery partition and to add the free space the existing C partition.
I would recommend you an freeware tool called Gparted

But before you would start doing this, create a recovery disk!
This is advisable in case you would try to set the notebook back to factory settings using such disk.

Hey Folks,
I had a problem with a virus on that sat pro, so I decided to totally erase the hdd to get rid of that virus. Bevor I did that, I saved everything from partiton D including the recovery path and after erasing of course I copied everything back at it's place (second partition).
Now trying to recover and don't know how to do it. F11, F10 and F8 seems not to work. Do I need the Recovery media created with recovery media creator or can I still use the recovery path on the new D: partition?
Thanks for your help in advance,
Stefan

Answer:Recovery on Sat Pro C660-2KM with new HDD with restored Recovery partition

Unfortunately recovery procedure doesn?t work on this way.
What you need now is recovery disc.
Generally speaking recovery image on second partition is useless and you will not be able to start it.

I have tried to do a product recovery on a satellite pro A60,

I put in disks 1 and 2 following the instructions and everything appears to work ok.
I then am told to remove recovery media and restart computer using ctrl, alt del

It restarts and goes through toshiba screen and onto windows xp screen....then a blue screen that says please wait while windows prepares to start... then onto windows xp professional screen with an egg timer saying please wait. Nothing else happens.

It doesn't do anything else, we left it for 3 hours today and it didnt move past this screen.

Has anyone else experienced this or can offer me some advice on how to make the laptop work again?

Answer:Satellite Pro A60 - recovery issue

I have installed the Windows and Toshiba Recovery many times and I didn?t notice this issue on any of my notebooks.
I remember that one times my Windows OS installation failed. I don?t know why?
But I have simply formatted my HDD, erased all partitions and started the installation again! The procedure finished successfully and notebook has booted into the Win XP OS.

You must understand that you issue could be related to the software only or to the hardware malfunction (HDD???)

One question; did you use the compatible Toshiba recovery CD? I have read many times about similar issues and finally the wrong recovery CD was the reason for the booting/installation problems.

Ensure that you sue the right CDs and then I would recommend repeating the OS installation.

Bye

I'm trying to recover my A85-S1072. I put the disc in it and it starts working and gets to about 30 percent on the toshiba restore tool 7.5.1 and then it says

Output A:\GHOST.ERR (giving option yes or no)
Clicking no sends it to a black screen with a flashing "_ " and clicking yes brings up a screen cannot open "GHOST.ERR - insert diskette"

is there any reason its not opening this file correctly? I've tried cleaning the disc and it doesn't have any scratches or marks. I also opened up the recovery disc on my other computer and looked at it however i was unable to figure out anything that i could do that wouldn't result in me ruining the recovery disc.
Any suggestions?

Answer:Recovery issue with Satellite A85-S1072

Hi there!
You have probably used a Norton Ghost utility before in this laptop and now things are not getting better between your OS and the setings of Ghost in this laptop.
If this is true, you have to use the ghost disk that will allow you to run it again so that you may undo or reset it's settings.
Hope this will help

Answer:Recovery issue with Satellite L300

Hello Andy

Unfortunately there is no some kind of ?magic solution?. Either recovery installation works or not and there is no way to get it work somehow.

All you can do is to start recovery installation again, if possible. Please do this and send some feedback.

To be honest I don?t understand why you didn?t create recovery DVDs following Toshiba?s advice. If something goes wrong with HDD or HDD recovery image cannot be used you will be able to use recovery DVDs for OS installation.

I have Satellite L650-12n. I bought recovery disks off this website to install on my Crucial CT256MX100SSD1. Installation appears to work but then after restarting computer this message pops up,

"windows could not complete the installation. to install windows on this computer restart the installation."
and sometimes this:
"windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware"

I have tried twice and the same thing happened.

I looked in BIOS and the SSD is recognised. I have tried resetting to defaults but nothing seems to work.

Any help getting past this problem before I bin the lot would be much appreciated!

Answer:Recovery issue on Satellite L650-12n

You said that you are using SSD drive.
I guess this might be the reason why the recovery does not work properly.

The recovery formats and creates new partitions on the HDD/SSD drive.
Sometimes it could be possible that the partitions could not be created properly due to different HDD / SSD sizes.

It would be interesting to know if you can finish the installation using the old HDD.

Hello

Check please follow Toshiba document - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R02.htm
There you can find description how to start HDD recovery image installation (not system repair).
After doing this you will have clean preinstalled OS and ?factory settings? again.

I hope this will help you.
Please note: this will delete all your data saved on partition C.

Hello All.

I actually sent this to Toshiba support a couple of days ago but as yet have had no reply and so thought I would try this forum.

This is the problem; the hard disk in my laptop is failing, I had warnings to create a backup and replace the hard disk asap. I have done this, and have successfully fitted the computer with a brand new Hitachi 500gb hard disk, with no problems.

I then entered setup and made the dvd the first boot drive. The first recovery disk in the drive and it booted perfectly and started the process. I then went through the recovery procedure with the 3 x dvds made on my computer, this seemed to work faultlessly, and after inserting all 3 disks in order as requested, I was instructed remove the final media.

I reset the boot back to hdd and windows started normally until I got to this point; "setup is starting services". Then comes a pop-up window saying; "windows could not complete the installation, to install windows on this computer restart the installation".

Naturally I have tried to boot in a few other ways from the f8 advanced boot options but it always does this same thing.

I cant imagine what the problem is it all seemed to go so well till this?

I hope you can help me solve this.
Thank You
Malc Fisher

i would like to know how can i get a recovery disc from
i do have a newer toshiba recovery disc for another newer toshiba
would this do

if its cheep enough i would by a recovery disc for this A210 model

if some body can help i would be very grateful
many thanks andy

Answer:Recovery issue on Satellite A210-171

Generally speaking recovery image is always created for certain notebook model and you cannot use recovery disc from other notebook model but if the hardware is the same you can try to install it and hope that everything will be OK.

For new recovery disc you must visit https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

Last option is installation of own version. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba download page http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp

This old model is known to me and I can tell you that Win7 32bit works perfectly on this machine so if you can do this install Win7. It runs better than older Vista.

Ran recovery cd's (set of three) and completed to Windows XP screen, however, no prompt appeared to reinsert CD no.1, which I assume contains the OEM O/S and now the laptop boots to the XP opening screen but no further.

Answer:Satellite 1105 - Recovery issue

Hi

Maybe is my English not good enough but I didn?t understood you well. Maybe you can explain your problem more detailed.

Fact is that you must boot your unit while the recovery CD1 is in CD/DVD drive and it must be set as first boot device. When the recovery procedure starts you can choose how it should be installed (standard and expert mode ? European units). The installation procedure illustration is like some MS-DOS application and you can see how many percent is installed. When the installation procedure is finished the unit will restart automatically and you must go trough Windows setup procedure before you can use OS.

Sorry but at the moment I can not tell you more about your problem.

Still Having problem with a satellite C850-1KN. I have the recovery discs but thought I would try and recover from the hard drive. This is what happens :
Start up with F12 pressed until See Toshiba display. Get to boot menu, go to HDD recovery, choose language, go to Troubleshoot. Choose option " refresh PC , press next , choose to start in Win 8.1 and get message "drive where windows is stored i9s locked . Unlock drive and try again ". Any ideas how to unlock the drive as the computer will not start up unless I use F12.
If I use option "toshiba maintenance utility " and win 8.1 as target operating system I get an invitation to choose either 1 ) delete all dat and partitions from the hard disc or 2) delete all partitions and overwrite all sectors on hard disc.

What will these do to my computer ? would I end up with a useless piece of junk or will the operating systems still be there. There are other options
such as "reset your PC" when all personal files and applications will be removed, and PC settings will be reset to their defaults . What will be left on the computer.

I have not tried from revery discs yet and wonder if this is the best option.
Can anyone help please.

I repeat I am certainly no expert or anywhere near.

Hi.

My problem is hopefully not as bad as it appears first....

I was trying to dual boot my laptop when I must have selected to use the entire disk for the new installation rather than the partition I selected.
As such, All my partitions are gone with my Windows 7 installation and HDD recovery partition.

The upside is that I backed up my C:\ and D:\ So I stll have a folder with "HDD recovery" but I don't know how to make it bootable (if that's possible).
I can't create a DVD right now but I'm going to try tomorrow. Will this work?

Anyone got any ideas?

Any help would be appreciated - Thanks

> The upside is that I backed up my C:\ and D:\ So I stll have a folder with "HDD recovery" but I don't know how to make it bootable (if that's possible).
Usually you could get access to the HDD recovery option by pressing F8 while booting up the unit. Then a option should appear called ?repair my computer?.
Then you should be able to choose HDD recovery.

But I?m not quite sure if this would work after you have deleted the partitions?
So possibly you will need to use the Toshiba recovery disk which you will try to create tomorrow ;) .

I?ve had two of these in for repair now. It seems "0" for recovery doesn?t work, nor does it find a system image for recovery. One of them refused to make recovery discs and the other sees the drives but says they r empty??? But made recovery discs.

This seems like a hardware problem
Has anyone else had this?

Answer:Recovery issue on Satellite C855

It seems "0" for recovery doesn?t work,

You want to recover the notebook using HDD recovery?
HDD recovery is possible ONLY if the HDD and the partition has not been touched previously!
In case you modified something on the HDD, the HDD recovery would not function anymore.

Good morning people.

I do have an issue with my Satellite. I am currently not home and do not know the exact version i have, but its a C-Series Laptop.

I watched NFL on Sunday, as usual, shut down the Laptop, went to bed.

Monday morning, i started the Laptop and it was already taking ages. I could then log in and saw my wallpaper, the battery status on the bottom right and the windows logo (Start) in the left bottom corner. Every now and then, other logos would show up, but disappear shortly after.

After a few minutes, i got the Windows Blue screen, saying there was an issue and data is being collected.

Reboot.

Toshiba Logo and its saying "data beeing analyzed" - "repair being prepared" - "repair started, may take up to two hours" - blackscreen, reboot, "data being analyzed" and so on.

Now, i had my laptop running for a solid 14 hours and it kept going through this loop.

It will not start from a CD, it will not let me get to BIOS.

I have taken out the RAM one after another, same issue.

What other steps could i take to save my data or the laptop?

Thanks all,

O.

My partner has a Satellite L310D which recently fell victim to the windows security virus.
We originally tried restoring to an earlier restore point but it resurfaced after a couple of days.

We then reinstalled windows from the recovery partition of the HDD which at first glance appeared to have done the trick but upon opening explorere and surfing the net, it keeps bombing us out with a windows error.

Also, when you are searching on google then clicking on a link, it will open additional search pages and refuses to open the link.

Finally, it will not let us complete windows updates and throws up a windows error which we cannot get rid of despite following their support pages.
I have been told the virus may have dug into the registry but I thought the HDD restore would sort this out.

Could it be that it has affected the whole hard drive, and how can I sort it out?
We do not have a recovery disc available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are unable to use it as it is. Apart from that the machine has been superb for our needs.

Answer:Satellite L310D - Virus and Recovery Issue

> Could it be that it has affected the whole hard drive, and how can I sort it out?
Well, a virus could affect the system functionality.
Usually the antivirus software should be able to remove this but some viruses are really though and new OS installation might be a best solution.

If you don?t have any recovery disks (usually you should create it at the first day of notebook purchase) then you could order this here:

( I uninstalled all the toshiba software as i dont use it whatsoever) does any body have any ideas what this could be i know about the 1.5 gb partition for recovery but im stuck as to where ive lost 10gb

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated

Regards

Richard.

Oh i forgot to add i cant find it with partition magic and ive added up the files i have 7gb as of now in program files and a 14gb vista install does not add upto anywhere near 36 gb which is what is used on my hard drive

Answer:Re: Satellite P200-1K8: Used recovery twice - HDD size issue

On my laptop, its set up like this:

200GB HDD

1.5GB for Vista's EISA recovery partition (Used to repair Vista)
6GB for the Toshiba Recovery Partition (Used when you restore the HDD back to its factory state)
190GB for Vista (its really about 178GB due GB vs BillionByte convertion and the File Allocation Table)

In Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management, you can see the partitions. Have a look in there for anything unusual

Well, thanks to whatever reason, and its frustrating as anything..I get a wrong machine error. Wont allow me to install my recovery disks. Call toshiba, they say my warranty expired have to go pay a service rep.. Arrgh..

This was bought brand new and it is the correct machine..
Anyway..when I get wrong machine i do get:

I am assuming, there is something I can type there that will have it reconize my machine.. Any ideas?? Toshiba was no help. Or.. If you have a idea on how i can boot this thing without the recoery disks.

Hi,

I'm having trouble fixing a Satellite C50-A Laptop, which was running Windows 8.1.

The main issue is a 'no bootable disk' error message.

The secondary issue, which is stopping me solving the first issue, is difficulty using the Toshiba USB recovery disk.

Any suggestions or advice on either of these problems would be much appreciated.

Troubleshooting this PC so far........................

The laptop has only had 13 months of light use.

I have no idea what caused the initial issue, but it's now giving a 'no bootable disk' error message.

( I'm not at all clear on how these recovery partitions are supposed to work. And I'm not familiar with UEFI / Secure Boot etc. Does this error message mean that the boot partition and the recovery partition both became corrupted simultaneously? Or are there some main boot files which might have become corrupt? )

I used a Linux live CD to access the drive, read-only, and managed to recover data. This would suggest to me that CD, CPU and RAM are all working okay, and the disk is still accessible. I'm not sure if this is a correct assumption.

It looks as if Windows has got itself mangled during some quick hibernate process, but I'm not competent enough to troubleshot a Toshiba partition / Windows 8.1 corruption issue from Linux.

So I reset the BIOS after using the Linux CD, and purchased a Toshiba USB Recovery stick.

Ideally, I'd like to just repair Windows, if that is all that is broken, and leave everything else as it was. ... Read more

It looks like the boot manager on the HDD has been damaged but this should not affect the booting from recovery disk or other disks like Win XP, Vista, etc?

Please check if you can boot from disk like Win XP.
This should repair the boot manager.

Hi,

I posted a few days ago as my reinstallation was stuck.
After two days of trying I gave up. I still do not know what the problem was but it seems that I can do nothing with it. I did 32bit and 64bit recovery disc so thought I would try that way...silly me.

I have Windows 7 on the disck, but obviosuly I can not get in to windows per se currently.

So, It boots to the disc but I am really struggling thereafter.
I've tried lots of different options and getting nowhere.

The latest error message is "To use sytem restore, you must specify which windows installation to restore. Restart the computer, select the operating system, and then select system restore"...which I've done many times and still come back to this screen.

I am not sure if the partitioned drive is still there with the back up or not, or even if it is still worth trying to work off that. Previously I could get to it but there was not an option to completely restart as it thought there was one still running (which was stuck).

Basically, from the recovery disc set I created I can get to an option that gives me:

Startup Repair +(Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically - Problem event name was StartupRepair Offline)+
System Restore +(To use sytem restore, you must specify which windows installation to restore. Restart the computer, select the operating system, and then select system restore)+

Don't know if this is the correct newsgroup for this problem.

Tried to reinstall Win XP Pro on my Toshiba 5105-S702 laptop using the Recovery CDs (circa 2001) that were supplied with it, but was blocked at the start of the recovery process, with a message to the effect that the product key was not valid. I suspect this happened because the original defective motherboard on the laptop had been replaced with a new motherboard.

Luckily I had previously purchased a Retail Version XP Pro SP1 a couple years ago, so I was able to use that instead of the Recovery CDs.

However I would still like to know how to resolve this problem (using original Recovery CDs with a new motherboard), short of purchasing the retail version of Win XP Pro, in case this problem also occurs with my newer Pro M70 laptop.

Would appreciate if anyone could advise.

Thank you

Can you please tell me where you have bought this notebook model? At first I thought it is an US notebook model but I can not find it on US support page.

Anyway, I also think that this happen because of mainboard exchange. DMI information is wrong and not identical with info on recovery media. Check please interesting and similar problem on one Qosmio thread.

Am a bit confused and need a simple explaination
My L850 hard drive died under warranty and has been sent to data recovery people to attempt to recover data before I get new drive under warranty.

I am being told that my hard drive has a fairly unique combination of firmware and drive which is preventing recovery until they get this firmware. Now 6 weeks after it happened I stll am waiting.

Could someone at support explain in simple terms why this firmware is causing problem and cannot so far be obtained by your partner data recovery company?

Answer:Satellite L850: HDD Firmware issue preventing data recovery

Hi

I think you will not get here an proper answer why the data recovery people needs such firmware since this is user to user forum.

But from my knowledge the all the 2.5? HDDs and SSD drive supports different firmware.
Such firmware tells the hardware how to interact with the computer's operating system.

It seems that the data recovery people needs such firmware in order to get access to the HDD and I assume without the compatible firmware its not possible to recover the data.

I?m trying to do a clean OS install of Vista onto a new hard drive, the install runs correctly but at the end, instead of it requesting me to create a user id and password as the machine does at first boot up when new, it shows a login for administrator with a message that the administrator account has been disabled, and another to input a pre-existing user name and password, which I do not have since this is a clean install.

Does Toshiba want me to only run the recovery on top of a pre-existing OS install? That would be quite a limitation, and would prevent one from recovering their machine after a hard drive dies.
Any thoughts? I did look thru the docs for a default password, but if it's there I didn't find it.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Re: Satellite U305-S7477 - issue with clean install from recovery disks

Hello

To be honest your issue is strange to me. The fact is, for operating system installation you can use either Microsoft installations DVD or Toshiba recovery DVD. In both cases when installation is almost done you must enter your username and password (optional). There is no difference at all.

I have done recovery installation many times under WXP and Vista. No difference at all. Username must be entered always and I didn?t notice such issue as described in your posting.

So please try to install OS again and be careful with each installations step. All recovery installations images are tested and I cannot imagine Toshiba?s people can oversight something like this.

I'm eager to set win xp instead of current vista on Satellite L350 -17Z because some soft is not stable and faults, while under xp on desktop I had no problems. XP Compatibility mode doesn't solve this.

So I decided to do it in a cruel way as a notebook is new and hdd nearly empty, besides I have got used to xp. Still I tried to make a recovery, using TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator.

But?*during burning DVD there is a fault and message about some problems with calibration. I tried few disks - same result.

Hi Snen,

It would be interesting to know what CD/DVD drive you have. Maybe you should try to update the firmware of the drive. For some Toshiba and Pioneer drives the website shows a firmware update. It?s worth a try!

And what kind of DVDs you are using for creating a recovery disk? I have good experience with DVD-R types and I use it from Verbatim.

Answer:Satellite A135-S7404 - Vista Recovery issue - error 10-FC12-0017

Hello

I do not know for sure but I presume this error has something to do with HDD. It must be some problem with HDD. I recommend you to talk with nearest Toshiba authorized service provider. I hope the notebook is still under warranty and if the HDD is defective it will be exchanged for free.

Answer:Sattelite C660 - generating recovery dvd

Hi buddy,

What DVD brands you are using for burning recovery disks? Maybe you are using a rewriteable medium so it couldn?t be empty?

In your case I would try different medias. I made good experience with Verbatim DVD-R.
