Preferred Solution: Satellite C660-172 and HDD recovery installation

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite C660-172 and HDD recovery installation

I don't know how you have removed OS from partition C and what have you done exactly and I?m a little bit sceptic this will work but you can try it anyway.

Do it as described in follow document -

on the laptop TOSHIBA C660, replaced the hard drive and, as a fact, the OS flew down (Windows 7 SP1 HB x 64).
Installed not licensed, there was no way out, on the Microsoft website, to download the image, the key from the laptop is not suitable.

Not a licensed image, there was no desire to put, the assembly is an assembly, naturally installed such an operating system behaved badly, buggy.

Done, and now the laptop does not work.
In the service center installation of OS and drivers costs 3500 rbl.

Offensively. So I'm looking for help on the forum.

Please, kindly request help. Thank you.

I have a problem in installing the ATI vga-driver. I know that only drivers from the Toshiba's site can be used, but they don't even work. I have a Toshiba Satellite C660 1-EF notebook with ATI HD5470, and Windows 7 SP1 x64 installed. I had bought it without an OS, so I didn't get any disks.

After I installed (clean install) the OS, I saw that some devices had been installed with the built in drivers of the Windows (or not even installed). So I decided to download the appropriate drivers. The first problem was, that I couldn't find ATI driver for W7 x64 on the Toshiba's site for this type of notebook. I tried to find a similar laptop, which has the same graphics card. At least I could find a driver. But when I wanted to install it, it was closed. It didn't do anything, just closed.

Since that, I have tried several drivers (most of them I downloaded from the Toshiba's site), but the result was the same.

What should I do?

Answer:Re: ATI Driver installation on Satellite C660 1-EF

THIS is the right ATI display driver for Win7 64bit.
Can you install it?

I have a problem with Windows 7 installation from USB on NEW HDD (Seagate). Every time I try to boot from USB, I receive Boot\BCD error oxcoooooof

Answer:Satellite C660 Windows 7 installation from USB

Are you able to boot from the internal ODD (optical disk drive) properly?

Did you check whether this bootable USB stick would work in connection with other computer?

I’m asking because to me it looks like the bootable USB flash memory stick is broken.

After a problem with my SatC 660 i decided to Nuke the hard drive and do a fresh install using a W7 32 Bit disk created from the web ( there is a free library of Windows 7 iso images (Sorry forgot name).

So i had the disk in and the disk drive which has the disk in, W7 is now saying it cant find the device driver for the DVD Drive which it has just used for it to show the W7 first screen.

Looked everywhere for the drivers for the DVD Drive but no joy on the web.

Can anybody help me out please?

Answer:Satellite C660 - need help with fresh Win7 installation

Maybe stupid question on the beginning but why you don't install original Win7 64 bit? I presume you got your machine with preinstalled operating system.

> So i had the disk in and the disk drive which has the disk in, W7 is now saying it cant find the device driver for the DVD Drive which it has just used for it to show the W7 first screen.
Sorry but after reading this sentence I?m completely confused and don't know how to understand this. If you have created bootable installation disc I hope you were able to install Win7 correctly. After first start you must continue to install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities that you can find on Toshiba download page -

Optical disc drive uses Microsoft driver and there is no some special driver for this device. It must be recognized automatically by preinstalled operating system.

If my posting was not helpful for you please be more precise with your problem description.

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help me or knows what to do. I have Satellite C660-15r it was turned off properly but when put back on it came up with start windows normally as if it has been interrupted, I clicked ok to that but instead of loading it has gone to do some sort of recovery only it hasn't been able to complete this and instead has said there is nothing to recover.

It is know stuck at this and will not go any further says to get system admin to log in however its not allowing to log in or do anything apart from shut down and restart, I have been trying to factory reset but it will not work at all I have tried many attempts with 0 and other options i have been told this doesn't work but I can get up f2 and f8 on load up all that works ok but I cannot find any option to be able to factory reset. it gives me options to recover but they take me to the same screen with no improvements and safe mode will not work.

I hope someone can help me I will be so grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Shell :)

Answer:Satellite C660-15r stucks and no recovery possible

At first I must say that recovery option is available if notebook has ?factory settings?. After reading your posting I don?t know if you still use original OS installation that you got with your notebook or maybe OS preinstalled on your own.

I presume you didn't create recovery media (DVD) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator, right?
In your situation usage of recovery disc could be easiest way to fix this and install original recovery image.

Can you please post exact notebook model?

I need some help for my sons laptop which is the Satellite Pro C660-1LR.

The hard drive in this laptop completely died, i did not create a recovery disc for this laptops system.
I have purchased a new hard drive which is installed..however as you have guessed i have no access to reinstalling a OS, this laptop runs on windows 7.

I am not really tech savvy so if anyone can advise me please make explain in idiot proof format!! I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-1LR - New HDD but no recovery disc

> I am trying to avoid having to purchase anything to costly.
Problem is that you don't have many options about that.
If you want to have ?factory settings? again you need recovery installation disc. You can order it on Of course it is not for free but, in my opinion, definitely the best solution.

You can buy Microsoft installation disc and install own version. You must buy valid licence for it.
In this case you must install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities additionally one by one.

Just in case that you can get this Microsoft installation and licence for free you can save some money.

Believe me the best solution is original recovery disc order.

I ordered a set of 2 Toshiba recovery CD's and received them yesterday in order to fix this laptop from a Windows breakdown...

The problem arising at start up is that Windows 7 isn't starting up plus that the hard disk doesn't show in the BIOS (the DVD-drive does) and after the boot sequence the following message comes up: ?Reboot and select proper boot device or insert root media in selected boot device? Someone suggested the drive is broken or the cables to the same detached or lose.

The owner says, that the error first appeared after McAfee offered to "remove 15 errors found on the disk". The laptop has never been opened.

When running the recovery CD 1 the boot sequence starts the recovery but initially shows two pop-ups that indicate that the hard disk cannot be found.

First error message - ERROR: IOCTL_DISK_GET_LENGTH_INFO \\. \PHYSICALDRIVE0 The device is not ready.

Second error message says something like - There is no access to disk #0 or the RAID configuration isn't correct!

After accepting both messages the prompt hands out the error that also appears in this thread...

...and stops at this line...

X:\ windows\ system32 >

...reporting that the recovery failed.

I have fooled around with the advices in this thread...

Answer:Recovery CD's do not recover Satellite C660-1WN

(...continued from first post...)

Left to be said is that I also - before I ordered the recovery CDs - ran the second diagnostic DOS tool in the first table to check the disk and got the following report...

- HDD power cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD interface cable is not properly attached to the HDD

- HDD master-slave setting is incorrect

...and equally that no disk could be detected.

My question is now..., what is wrong here? Is it the physical disk that might be the problem? Is it the software? MBR? Can the latter be restored by some command in the prompt? If, then how? Would it be easier to erase the whole disk and then use the recovery CDs? Or won't this work since the recovery CDs can only work with the recovery information on the disk (I assume that this information is only physically on the disk not on the recovery CDs, isn't this correctly understood)?

I am looking forward to any input and help. Thanks in advance.

Apologies if this is the wrong subforum:

Being the idiot I am, I changed my WIndows Login password and since I use very long passwords, I have no idea what I changed it to. Guessing is out of the question.

So I powered on my laptop while holding the 0 key, which brought me to the Windows Boot Manager screen. I pressed F8 on Windows 7 for advanced options and opted for 'Recovery Mode' as I have used this in the past to install the OS from scratch.

It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.

Any advice on what I can do?

Answer:HDD Recovery Issue on C660 Satellite

>It asks me to select a keyboard layout and then enter my username and password to procede with HDD Recovery. It is this lack of password which is the reason for recovery.
On this step you must enter your Windows login name and login password. Without right password you will not be able to start HDD recovery installation.

There is second option to install recovery image. You can do it now using recovery DVD. Have you created it using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator?

Is it possible and where I can find this recovery partition image ?

Good morning!

I have a Satellite C660-1NX (PSC1LE-00F00NCE), I had to reformat the computer, put on a clean Windows 7 64x (not recovery) with all original drivers giving official Toshiba page,

Everything looks perfect but when turn off the computer is completely frozen, I thought it was 64x and 86x and install the same, the first day all right, then started the same problem, eh updated BIOS, as usual, before formatting this did not happen, it is very weird,

I find the reason for the problem never happened to any computer this.

Best regards

Answer:Satellite C660-1NX freezes while shutdown after clean Win 7 installation

?and what happen when you install the system using Recovery disk?
Does the notebook freezes too?

I doubt someone will be able to say why the unit does not shut down properly.
I think first of all its necessary to find out if its hardware or software related problem.

In case its software related issue, the recovery disk containing the configured Toshiba image should resolve this annoying issue.

Hi folks,

Posting this question for my neighbour as he now has no internet access as laptop not working - Satellite C660 running Win7.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.

I bought a couple of days a go a new Satellite C660-121. Today I proceeded to make the recovery discs but it fails verifying the first DVD disc.
The error I get is this

E:\ is the name of the DVD drive. I use Verbatim DVD-R media, I have the laptop on power supply during the burning process and I tried twice with two different discs and got the same result. How can I fix this problem?

Answer:Satellite C660-121 can't verify the recovery disc

Hello Voger

I have created numerous recovery DVD on several Toshiba notebooks and have never noticed something like this. I have used DVD-R discs only and brands were Verbatim or TDK.

Unfortunately I cannot give you answer what does this message means but you must try to repeat DVD creation. If possible try with TDK.
If the same happen again I recommend you to recovery your notebook using HDD recovery option and try to create recovery discs again.

Sorry but I don?t see any other possibility at the moment.

A month ago I purchased a Toshiba C660-1FE. After three weeks my HD broke down. I bought a new HD from Western Digital and replaced the broken HD. As I did not make an recovery image of my HD, I had to order the Product recovery discs off the Toshiba website (3 discs, of which disc 1 and 3 were the only one's required for installation).

Now, I have the problem that my laptop keyboard does not work. I am currently using a USB keyboard and mouse to replace my keyboard and touchpad of the laptop.

The laptop keyboard works fine in BIOS. Therefore, I hope it's just a driver problem.

I have:

tried finding and installing lots of drivers on from the toshiba website, no result.
tried changing settings in the bios (usb enable/disable).
tried to fix the problem by re-installing the entire computer again several times.

The keyboard seems to work until windows loads. When the system is starting up I can press caps lock and num lock and the green lights come on. This all stops working once the windows startup symbol appears.

Perhaps a second problem in the device manager: under the display-adapter, 2 subcategories have exclamation marks: it says Mobile Intel(R) 4 series express chipset family twice! I can't seems to fix these with any drivers I can find either. When I check the settings I have this message (google translate since it was in dutch):

Answer:After Recovery with CD Satellite C660-1FE keyboard does NOT work

Keyboard works in BIOS? this means that the keyboard hardware should be ok and the connection between the motherboard and keyboard is established.

So what could be wrong? Keyboard driver?
Hmm? the keyboard driver is a part of the Windows OS and is installed automatically while OS installation?
I would recommend following:
Go to device manager and extract the point Keyboard.
There you should see something like ?standard PS/2 keyboard?
If you will see a red cross near this device, then this means that the keyboard is disabled.
Usually you should be able to enable this again (in device manager).
If there is no red cross, then I recommend deleting this keyboard from the device manager list?then reboot the notebook. Usually the OS should recognize the removed device automatically and should install the driver too.

Check this.

By the way: it could be possible that you have received a wrong Recovery disk? this could explain the issues after the recover procedure?

If your notebook was delivered with 64bit version you can create recovery disc for this preinstalled version only. With other words, recovery image saved on recovery partition will be saved on empty DVD disc. Nothing more than that.

If you want to use 32bit OS you must check if your notebook model is supported for it and install own version.

I have a laptop from a client, that is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-239, and i'm having a strange issue.

The original hard disk failed, and as the laptop is out of warranty, we bought a new hard disk, and ordered the recovery media to this model, from our local toshiba repair assistance.

After the setup copied the files to the disk, the imageX fails when restoring the image files with the error:

"the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

The hard disk is new, and i tried also with more 2 hard disks, and also with an external cd-rom drive.

I talked with the support from the local repair assistance, and they told me this occurs because the new hard drive ins't compatible with the recovery media?!

One of the new hard disks i tried, was the exact same model than the original hard disk, and the error still occurs, so the hard disk can't be the problem.

Is there any change of the recovery media is corrupted?

Could also be a motherboard problem?

Thank you

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-239 - Error restoring from recovery media

Of course this is possible.
In case the HDD is OK, the recovery media could be corrupted.

>Could also be a motherboard problem?
I don?t think so?. I presume the HDD is recognized in BIOS properly and the error message says something about corrupted directory. I guess the disk directory is meaning and I think media should be replaced.

Usually the Win 7 operating system already contains the SATA drivers which are needed in order to see the HDD. So it?s not necessary to include SATA drivers while Win 7 installation. You said you?ve got a Win 7 copy disk. Is this a original Microsoft disk with full functional Win 7?
I?ve installed many times Win 7 on my Toshiba notebooks and didn?t need to use SATA drivers?

In BIOS you have found SATA controller mode. This should be set to AHCI. You can change this pressing SPACE.
But also settings the BIOS to default should do this job.

I recently purchased toshiba Satellite C660 M21G Laptop with windows 7 32 bit installed (not licensed) and I installed all the hardware drivers except the SM Bus Controller and the Nvidia GeForce graphic adapter driver, this because it does not exit on toshiba web site, or by other mean it exist but when I try to install either the Chipset utility or the display driver (VGA driver) an error message appear in both installation indicates that I didnt matched the minimum system software requirments for installing both the Dispaly adapter and the chipset.

I dont know why those requirments does not included in the error message ?

I have more that 12 hours trying to find a way out to install the dispaly driver because the standard VGA driver that windows 7 (32 bit) installed is very poor and i cant running any games or playing video smoothly
I am suffer and I need help

best regards

Answer:Satellite C660-M21G SM bus controller and display driver installation issue

From my knowledge the Satellite C660-M21G belongs to the PSC1SE series.
I?m wondering where did you find the right display driver for this series?
The notebook seems to support the NVIDIA GeForce 315M

I checked the Toshiba European driver page and not all Win 7 32bit drivers are released on the European driver page? I think you tried to install wrong or not compatible graphic card driver and therefore this error message appeared while installing the drivers.

But it seems that Win 7 64bit driver is available for this series therefore I would recommend testing the driver for Win 7 64bit.
The SM bus controller might be the Card reader and in such case you should install the Card Reader Controller driver from Realtek. There is also an Win 7 64bit driver version available on European driver page?

Test it simply?

Over a year ago i have changed to windows 10 (not aware that my laptop is not suitable for this)
It worked fine untill Microsoft started the Windows10 anniversary upgrade 1607.
each time this will result in unbootable system and in need of external recovery to window 10 version 1511.
blocking updates is not simple in Windows10.
I would like to revert to window 7.

Cannot use this to parttion install official windows7 from microsoft
Partition 2: Windows 232MB Primair

Strange problem. My Satellite C660D-1FM was doing a bunch of updates from Microsoft (hadn't done any updates for ages as it was used by my daughter and not connected to the internet) and after they had completed it rebooted and I got the Toshiba splash screen and then nothing. Holding F8 gives the same problem, tried holding the '0' key while powering on and that was the same. Connected an external monitor and it's the same. I can get into the BIOS and everything looks fine.

So, thinking the hard drive might be faulty I fitted another hard drive and fully installed Win7 from a Microsoft DVD (SP1 and all updates) and everything works. I then thought I'd try and restore the laptop to default factory settings using the Toshiba recovery DVD's which Id created. All worked fine during the install, all 3 DVD's installed and it went through the setup procedure, laptop got to the end when it wanted to reboot, rebooted and now back to the same error - Toshiba splash screen is ok but then it just goes blank. To convince myself I wasn't going mad I then re-installed Win7 from my Microsoft DVD and it installs fine, does all updates and has worked all day today with no issue.

Anyone any idea what's going on?

Answer:Satellite C660 - blank screen after recovery image instalation

Hmmm... something like this should not happen.
Do you use recovery discs for the first time?
Have you noticed the same result on both HDDs?

Problem is that there is no much to do about that and there is no way to change anything while recovery installation runs or later when windows setup is in progress.

Try to set BIOS to default settings and simply try to install recovery image again.

Please can anyone help. I tried using my recovery disks to restore my notebook when it kept failing to start properly. The disks did not work so I purchased a set of disc from Toshiba on this website. I still have the same problem.

Is it the hard drive failing or something else?

If I purchase a new hard drive will the recovery disks work if the hard drive is not exactly the same as the one that came out?

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery disk fails error 1117

Did you think about the HDD?
It could be a HDD malfunction that does not allow you to install the system.

I recommend checking the HDD for some possible issues.

There is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test. You can use it for HDD check.
Google simply to get the software.

Hi all

Just a query
My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).

As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

After own OS installation you cannot create recovery disc anymore and you can not install recovery image using HDD recovery option (F8 at start-up).

Best thing you can do now is to order original disc from Toshiba and use it for recovery image installation. It is definitely easiest way to have ?factory settings? again.
You can order it on

I have a brand-new Satellite Pro C660. It worked fine for a day, now it won't load windows. I didn't get around to creating the recovery disks as I've only had it a few hours (yes, yes, I know, should have been the first thing I did). All the data is present (but backed up to USB just in case) and I can see the HDDREcovery folder with all data intact. However, I can't run the app to create recovery disks. Does anyone know how to extract the images and create the media using only the command prompt? (I can get into command prompt by booting from a friend's Win 7 disk). All boot options from the laptop's own drives fail. It says "Windows Failed to Load", and I try Startup Repair but it doesn't find any errors. Any help/thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro C660 - How to make recovery disk with command prompt?

It?s not possible to create recovery disk with command prompt. You have to use the Toshiba recovery media creator on Windows.

Now it?s too late for you but you can order such a disk here:

1st time forum poster so be gentle please!

My mum has just brought a Toshiba laptop and it's pretty decent to be fair. Taking a quick look at it though i noticed the recovery partition (that comes with most laptops now) is labelled "D:/Data and is 232GB in size. Seems a bit on the large side for me and wondering if it is incorrect?

Have got a screenshot and if someone could confirm either way i'd be most grateful. Can i attach screenshots?

Thanks in advance

So is the data on D safe if I use recovery?

Answer:Re: Satellite C660/C660D will using recovery erase data on D partition?

From my knowledge using Recovery Disk would format the whole HDD and all partitions would be created again during this process.
This means that your data on D partition is not safe.

But from my experience the usage of HDD recover would format only the system (C) partition? not quite sure if this applies to all the Toshiba notebooks so possibly you should test this first time? in such case would recommend backup the data in case D partition would be erased.

Don't know if anyone can help me but I'm losing the will to live.

I've got this laptop, the OS corrupted and basically failed due to a malware infection. I never had the recovery disks so I've clean installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit twice in the space of 3 days because each time, Windows Update will not work. It simply sits on checking for updates and never finishes. I've tried EVERY solution going - ive reset windows update, done all the fix it programs supplied by microsoft to no avail.

As I said, this is a totally clean install, no anti virus, no 3rd party firewall, updates attempted via both ethernet and wifi. Am I missing a driver of some sort? There are no exclamation marks or warnings in device manager?!

It's doing my head in. What am i doing wrong?!

One observation, both installs have required me to activate via phone, it wouldn't work via the internet?! Is this related in any way?
Drivers installed:

I got them off this page:

Is there any that I'm missing that are important?

Thanks in advance!

Otherwise I recommend you to check the MS knowledge base regarding the Windows 7 update issues.

I spend some hours to try to create the recovery disks for my Laptop (Satellite C660-1DG)

It fails on the second DVD halfway. It just hangs. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work anymore a cold boot is required to start the thing again.

I tried several DVD's but NOGO each time halfway the second DVD it hangs.

I really need to create these recovery DVD's because Im going to upgrade the laptop to run a Windows Server 2012 install for development purposes.

I thought this would take just a minimum amount of time but... of course...

Any thoughs on any way to get this stuff working?

Answer:Satellite C660-1DG - Toshiba Media Creator Recovery fails creating 2nd DVD

I burned just another disk and it was full of validation errors: hundreds.

So I connected my external DVD writer (NEC ND-3500AG) (firmware 2.1A) and took THE SAME DVD and burned it: presto: no problems: 0 validation errors

So I deduce that the internal DVD writer (TSSTcorp TS-L633C) (firmware TF20) is chunky.

I am still in warranty but... is it any use?

Can someone please help,

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D for my nephew, We have forgotten the administrator password and we don't have password reset disk is there anyway around this.

Answer:I forgot my administrator password on Satellite C660/C660

I assume you are talking about windows system password and not about BIOS password. Right?
It?s not very big problem if you forgotten the System password but if you mean BIOS password then you are in trouble because the BIOS password can be deleted just by an Toshiba ASP technicians?

So I assume you mean Windows password? so start the notebook and press F8
Now you can choose Repair my Computer and then choose HDD recovery.
This would start a HDD recovery procedure which would reinstall the system? during the setup you can set anther admin password.

Of course there are some other methods but as far as I know this requires 3rd party software/tools or Win 7 DVD? so I think the HDD recovery is the fastest solution.

When I first got this product, before opening I thought that all the 500gb would go to the first partition, but then I saw that the recovery partition has half of the 500gb just for recovery which is unnessecery.

But I had no problem with this at the time, and used the recovery partition(after saving to a disk) for ubuntu so I could have a dual boot.

But now I've came to realise that the games I'm downloading are taking more and more room up on my C drive. The problem I have is that I can shrink my recovery partition and enlarge the C drive.

Does anyone know a work around?

Answer:Satellite Pro C660-225: Shrinking recovery partition englarge C partition

You will need an 3rd party software to shrink the recovery partition and to add the free space the existing C partition.
I would recommend you an freeware tool called Gparted

But before you would start doing this, create a recovery disk!
This is advisable in case you would try to set the notebook back to factory settings using such disk.

You will be not able to restore it to the factory settings because another OS has been installed on the first partition.
Usually pressing the F8 immediately after the notebook has been powered up should enable the advanced menu on the screen. There you should choose option called ?Repair my Computer? and Toshiba recovery HDD.

But if this doesn?t work then you will be not able to use the HDD recovery.
In such case you have to order new Disk from here:

I have a Satellite A100 laptop and its DVD reader is not working anymore. I don't want to waste money on an external DVD reader. I want to install the Recovery from a USB device. I have copied my recovery disk image and saved it as ISO.

My original recovery window is "Windows XP Media Center". I don't want instructions for Linux OS. :P

I tried many methods but they didn't work for me. (Unetbootin, Ultra ISO etc)

If anybody could help in anyways will be appreciated.

Answer:Satellite A100 - WXP Recovery DVD Installation via USB

As far as I know it doesn?t work on this way and recovery image can be installed with bootable recovery disc. You cannot so simply copy all files to USB stick and install recovery image.

This should be easy kind of manipulation that can be used on different notebook models. Please note before recovery image installation starts data in recovery image and data saved on mainboard must be compared and if this doesn?t match you will not be able to install recovery image.

ODD for this old notebook model is not expensive. You can find used one on ebay and replace it alone. If you need some assistance we can help you.

No, you cannot use the Recovery HDD after the Win XP installation because it looks like you have formatted the HDD and the HDD partition has been erased.

So you will have to use the Toshiba Recovery disk which you have created hopefully before you have formatted the HDD.

Hi I am new here.

I have a Satellite M105-S3004 bought more than one year ago. The XP OS crashed down about one month ago. I tried to reinstall it by myself because the warranty has expired. I have tried many times but all failed. I will try to describe what I saw as exact as possible below. Thanks first for nice guys in this forum.

At the beginning, my laptop automatically restarted when it was running. Sometimes when I turned it on, it tried several times to start the Windows XP. Between these tries the screen was blue with error message on it. It was so fast that I could not read anything. Finally my laptop could not start XP even in safe mode, with the following error:

Then I started to reinstall XP Home edition (I have a recovery DVD from Toshiba. But at first I didn?t notice to use it. It looks different from a Windows XP CD. But finally I was told by Toshiba that the recovery DVD has a copy of XP media center version). I tried three times to reinstall XP home edition. ?\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt?

Answer:Recovery installation on Satellite M105-S3004

This is a very long story dude?.

I have read your whole post and in my opinion there is nothing wrong with the HDD because you were able to install the OS on the HDD but maybe there is something wrong with the both memory modules.

You are right about the memory slots.
It seems that only one memory module is user upgradeable and the second memory is hidden somewhere under the keyboard.

You have replaced only one module but possible the second malfunctions too! ?:|
It would be really interesting to know if this issue could be solved by replacement of both memory modules.

In your case I would recommend contacting a computer technician because as you said it?s very difficult to find and to remove the second module on the Satellite M105.

Then you could try to install the OS from the Toshiba delivered DVD or from the original Microsoft windows CD.

Good luck

I've just bought a U200, and have set to rebuilding it so I understand how it works.

I've already had to reinstall from the recovery disk, I was wondering during the recover there is a question about partitioning, I'd like to partition the machine to a C and D drive, is this when I'd do it, the question is asked how much space to allocate to the partition, If I\ allocated 20gb would i get a C drive of 20gb and a D drive of the remaining 40gb?

Answer:OS installation using recovery disc - Satellite Pro U200

You are right. If you choose 20GB it will be created 20GB partition and on this partition will be installed OS. After you start preinstalled OS the second partition (40GB) will not be visible and you must create logical partition.

You can do this if you start ?Computer management? ? click on Disk management. Click with right mouse button on ?black marked? partition and choose option to create logical drive. Follow the instructions and the partition D will be created.

I tried to somehow handle it and I've tried many programs, but it is not a fully accomplished what I wanted, the laptop is still slow. How buying a laptop was pre-installed operating system Windows 8.

My question then is whether there is any way to restore the system to the state it was in as I ran it the first time? When the recovery options, I chose the option to restore the system to factory condition, there is information that you are missing some files, or you can run it from the installation media or recovery media system. I use a Toshiba Satelite P100-119 from 2006. I want to run the original delievered Product Recovery CD after saving all my data, so that with a new, empty system, the laptop gets faster again.

But as there was preinstalled software (Office, Toshiba programms) when I bought it, I`m not sure if they`re gone after the recovery. I didn`t get CDs for these programmes, they were just preinstalled and what about my windows xp, does it recover completely with the cd?

Answer:Satellite P100-119 - Software after recovery installation

Hi buddy,

After recovery installation you have the same settings as purchased the notebook. With other words recovery disk will restore ?out of box settings?.

First of all the recovery disk will wipe the whole HDD and delete everything. After this Windows will be installed with all drivers and tools. Furthermore the preinstalled software like Office, etc. will also be installed and you can use it again. :)

But backup all important data like picture, music, etc. because everything will be deleted for a clean Windows installation.

Hi guys!

I want to format my Toshiba Satellite M60 soon. But I don't have a clue how to do this and even more I don't know how to recover my Windows XP. I have Express Media Player Recovery CD but nothing else from Toshiba because Windows was already on my drive.

Can you help me how to format and recover my factory settings on my laptop?
Please help

Answer:Formatting and Windows Recovery installation on Satellite M60

Without much discussion: ?factory settings? you can have if you install operating system using original Toshiba recovery CD/DVD. Unfortunately you do not have it.
Now you have two possibilities: either you try to order and buy new one (by authorized service provider) or you will install WXP using Microsoft installations CD. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba support site.

If you need more info please let me know.

Am trying to re-install windows 7 on Satellite L500D. I'm having all sorts of problems with the computer since it got infected by malware or virus, not sure which. I have already backed up all my documents, pics and pst file to an external hard drive.

I hold down "0" when powering up then got following options.

First option is 32 or 64 bit,
I chose 32 as it currently has 32 bit installed.
Next option is Warning, I selected yes.
Next option is Recovery of Factory Default Software (Recover to out-of-the-box state). or Erase the hard disk, I chose Recovery of Factory Default.
Next is 3 options,
1. Recover to out-of-the-box-state (System Recovery Options are include),
2. Recover without changing the hard drive partitions, or
3. Recover to custom size partition. I thought I choose Option 1, but it says all partitions will be deleted and you will lose all data on the hard drive.

Does this mean I will delete the windows install partition?
Should I choose option 2?
Option 2 says "The first partition will be deleted and you will lose all data on the partition." I'm thinking option 2?

On a separate issue, could I install the 64 bit version of Windows, if so would there be any benefit?

Answer:Recovery image installation on Satellite L500D

Detailed explanation about recovery image installation you can find on

Please check it and I hope you will find al info you need there. I always use ?Recovery to out-of-box state? option > System Recovery options are included.

Your system is obviously infected and you need complete reinstallation so don't make the whole thing so complicated. Back-up all your data and install recovery image using option 1. Who cares what will be deleted and what not. Whole HDD should be cleaned up.

I recommend you to use 64bit OS version.
Very nice article about 32 and 64bit OS versions you can find here .

I have today taked delivery of a bright, shiny, brand new recovery disk, direct from Toshiba. I was under the impreession it would wipe everything from the hdd and recreate a factory install with HDD recovery partition (which is what I want) but it fails every time at the same place with the following error message:-

[WARNING] W\:sources\boot.wim [uncompress File: (seq. 90) -> file corrupted in block at offset 024D8020

Any ideas how to solve this or have I waited 2 weeks for a dud CD??

Answer:Satellite L300 - Fails during recovery installation

I have also Satellite L300 but never had a problem with the Toshiba recovery disc.

What happens if you install Windows using a Microsoft disc? Does it work or do you get an error message too? If yes it might be a hardware issue, HDD, RAM or something else.

Furthermore I did read here in forum that it?s sometimes useful to format the whole HDD before using Toshiba recovery disc.

I have a satellite pro 210 (bios v1.6) in which the HDD recently died.

I purchased a new WD Scorpio Blue 250Gb HDD and ran the recovery disc (I did exactly this for a friends Equium a month or so back and all worked flawlessy!)

All worked fine until the first re-boot, went through the usual stuff:
please wait a moment while windows starts for first time
Then a windows background, spinning cursor with please wait message, plenty HDD activity
Then the sudden error:
"Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware"*

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?
A google search suggested bios sata settings, but I can't see any in the bios setup page.
I see there is a new v2 bios for download - would this help?
If so how can I install it when the computer won't start vista? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks for reading.

Cheers, Stephen

Answer:Satellite Pro A210 - recovery error after new HDD installation

The SATA driver is not needed if you use the Toshiba Recovery disk because the image on this recover disk contains the SATA driver.
So there must be other reason for that.

In your case I recommend setting the BIOS to default settings and to start the recovery procedure once again.
Maybe something went wrong during the OS configuration? so second installation is worth a try?

So far what I have done is put in the Product Recovery DVD-ROM. Then when restarting my computer I was prompted to restore my computer to the factory defaults and said. After it went through that process it told me to remove the disc so I did. Now all it does is reach a black screen after the Toshiba screen that gives me the options to f2 for setup and f12 for options.

I do not know what to do now to make my laptop work again. Please help.

Answer:Satellite M70 - Black screen after recovery installation

Hi Zach_1,

Have you tried to start recovery installation again? Maybe something went wrong during first installation, this could be happened?
So try recovery installation again and see what happens.

If it doesn?t work you should try a normal Microsoft disk so determine if the problem is related to recovery disk or hardware.

Answer:Satellite A80 - Error code 49 during recovery installation

Hi ClementLo,

I don?t know when you exactly get this message but theoretically it could be a problem of the HDD. Maybe it has defective sectors and should be replaced?

Can you also test the same using a Microsoft disk? Maybe the disk is scratched?

I am trying to restore my Toshiba laptop Satellite A200-28P (Windows Vista Home) using the product recovery disk supplied with the laptop, no matter what I try to do I cannot get it to run, the only thing it will allow me to do is restore the laptop to an earlier date. I have full admin rights on the laptop, there are no virus's or any other malware on it, all this seems to have happened since it updated with windows vista about two days ago, have uninstalled the updates but that had no effect.

I cannot find the recovery console any where on the laptop yet I know it was there before. I have tried many of the solutions found on the web but none of them work. I did use the recovery disc about 2 1/2 years ago when the laptop crashed and it worked fine then.

Any help apprecited

I cannot remember anymore how it was with A200.
Have you got recovery DVD only or you were also able to start HDD recovery installation using F8 at start up (Advanced boot options > Repair my computer)?

Anyway, your problem description confuses me.
If you use recovery DVD as bootable disc there is no repair console or some options.
When recovery installation starts you can just see menu where you must click on next.
Please check my lats posting on

I'm new at this so please be gentle with me! - I have a Toshiba Satellite L350-170 (Windows Vista SP2). I burned 2 recovery DVD's just after I got it from new. I decided to recover it to factory settings, so I placed the first recovery disc in the drive and ....nothing. It won't auto play/boot up to start the recovery process. I can access files on the disc via "MY COMPUTER" but can see a "SET-UP". I had previously used the discs to recover and it worked then no problem.

There is nothing wrong with the computer or any error messages

Apologies if its been said before but, can anyone help or let me know whats happening please?

with grateful thanks

Answer:How to start recovery installation on Satellite L350-170?

Hello Myke

If it has worked in the past i don?t see the reason why it should not works again, except the discs are damaged.

Anyway, try this:
Start your notebook and press F12 several times to enter boot menu
Put the disc 1 into optical disc drive
In the list choose CD/DVD drive and press ENTER

ODD should start to read the disc and you should see something on the screen.

Does it work for you?

as my PC always got locked after some 10minutes (surfing on the net, Ms office use,...) I finally decided to reinstall Windows and made a recovery installation disk. Indeed, removing all software (office, Chrome,...) and reinstall it did not solve anything
I reinstalled it and noted the installation was very slow indeed (hours) until it stopped at step 47 out of 47. Waiting again for sooo long for step 47 to finish, it did not move on at all.

I restarted but then was asked by WIndows7 for an administrator password. How can I know, I did not create any user.

So restarted in safe mode where I could create a user with administrator rights (if did not create a pasword for it)
Then I could log on, but it brought me again immediately to the Toshiba Leading Innovation screen on top of windows again getting stuck again at step 47/47. No move at all again.

I then decided to lower the safety level to the lowest level as to "when software is installed you are not asked for authorisation".
Indeed, step 47 then finishes.
But then I get another installation step with comment "De systeemprestaties worden nu geclassificeerd". This is the dutch text meaning "Systemprestations are now classfied".
I progresses somewhat but after some 10 seconds, it stops and the progress bar does not continue anymore. Waiting hours does not help and sometimes windows automatically restarts. It starts again with executing step 47 out of 47, going back to "Systemprest... Read more

Answer:Recovery installation does not proceed on Satellite L850D

Hmmmm.... it is not easy to say what is wrong there.
Which notebook model do you have?
If I understand you right you didn’t create recovery media (DVD or USB), right?

Usually recovery image installation should do the job, except there is some problem with recovery image or HDD. I have installed recovery image many times and cannot imagine what else could be the problem.

Stupid thing is that you didn’t create recovery disc and you are not able to test it now using such discs. You are not able to test it with new HDD now because you don't have the recovery discs.
You know what; the problem is that there is no some kind of workaround. Either it works or not.

I really don't know what to say now. All you can try is to set BIOS to default settings and try again.
Please do it and send some feedback.

I hope someone can help.

My laptop would not boot this morning, so I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart, I got the splash screen telling me to push F2 or F12, let it go and the laptop stopped at a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
I had done a backup two days ago, so decided it was time to do a factory restore and clean up the disk.
I shut it down, then pushed the 0 (zero) key and tapped the power button, as per the instructions. When it beeped, I let go of the button adn it now said:
A disk read error ocurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

And at the bottom is:

I got this Satellite A200 PSAF0A-04X019 from a family member, who didn't create recovery disks when setting the laptop up.

Can I do anything to access the recovery partition and run a file manually, or is its beyond repair??

Answer:How to start recovery installation on Satellite A200?

If you cannot start HDD recovery installation on ?regular way? there is no other chance to have access to recovery image.
To be honest I don?t know what this error means exactly. I don?t know if there is some problem with HDD or recovery image.

What you can do now is to install own OS and later download all drivers, tools and utilities alone or try to contact Toshiba service provider and ask if they can order one recovery DVD for you.

My daughters laptop. She wanted me to restore her computer to factory settings. It is running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I have tried the restore disks 4 times now with pretty much the same results. It will get all the way to the "Applying Final Configuration where it installs the User Manual and the Desktop Links and then just sits there. After reading several posts here with the same issue, I decided to let it sit all night. This morning it had timed out. I clicked the mouse button to wake it up. It goes to the logon screen. It shows the Admin logon and says that the Admin account has been locked, Please see your system administrator. How can that be? It will not let me in! My only choice is to restart the system. After restarting, it brings up the AFC screen and reinstalls the same two files User Manual and Links and then just sits there.

I can minimize the AFC screen which I did and then I changed the power settings to never time out. I have the WiFi button turned off as requested by the AFC screen as it will not install the User Manual and the Links file with WiFi turned on. I don't know what else to do.

Anybody have some insights on this? How about if I was to totally format the HD and then try to restore? Any help would be appreciated.

Satellite A200-1VP
Can anyone please help me?
I used the Toshiba recovery disc yesterday and ended up with a far worse situation than I started with!
The process worked for about 15 minutes and then I got a message that the installation couldn't be completed due to corrupted files.

Great - I tried running the process again but it just came up with the same message straight away.
I then installed Windows7 so that I have an operating system & that seems to be working OK but, of course, I've lost all the drivers that came with the laptop.

Given the number of posts concerning problems with system recovery, I'm really surprised and disappointed that a company with the reputation of Toshiba seems unable to provide its customers with a reliable method of recovery.

Does anybody know if there is some way that I can reinstall the required drivers please?

I am not a very experienced user and I'm certainly not as young as I was so, if you are able to help, would you please explain it very simply!!

you for any help you are able to give me.

Answer:Satellite A200-1VP: Recovery installation couldn't be completed

Hi mate

First of all it?s really pity that you could not finish the recovery installation.
I have recovered my two different Toshiba notebooks and every time the recover ran properly and could be finished? so it?s definitely everything ok with the recover process and possibly damaged files were responsible for your issue?

However, I have installed also a fresh Win 7 on my A210 notebook and in most cases the Win 7 has recognized all devices automatically and I didn?t need to install all drivers.

But I installed VAP (value added package) and flash card support utility which I could download from Toshiba European driver page. But chosen the L500 series because I could not find the VAP and flash card support utility for A210. However, it worked.

Ohh? I forgot to say that I had to install the Bluetooth stack? I found this here:

I m looking forward getting some help.

My Best,

Answer:Satellite T110-121 - Blue screen after recovery installation

I think something goes wrong during recovery installation and so you get a blue screen and can?t install the WLAN software. The best option would be running recovery process again.

But why you can?t reach the recovery anymore? I mean you can use the HDD recovery as often as you want and you can start if you enter the advanced boot menu of Windows (press F8 before Windows start) and choose ?Repair my computer?. Then select Toshiba HDD recovery and follow the screen instructions. Windows will be reinstalled with all drivers and tools.

I think I can purchase these froma non toshiba website, but very worried about non geniue software, which can casue frurther problems down the line.
I can't find anything in the site to be helpful as to where I can get hold of the needed disc(s).
Anyone has a suggestion?

If you have US machine you must search all information on Toshiba US page -

It is pretty old machine and I don't know if you will be able to order original recovery media.
What you can do is to install own OS version and install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities hat you can find on US download page.
