Re: Satellite L300 - Keep recovery partition when using DBAN

Question: Re: Satellite L300 - Keep recovery partition when using DBAN

I normally use DBAN to wipe my disks, however, I'm interested in doing this on a laptop without destroying the recovery partition.

Basically on a Satelitte L300 I would like to wipe the HDD using DBAN (Darik's Boot & Nuke) (but preserve the recovery partition) and then do a clean install of Windows 7. Is this possible or do I need to look at another alternative?

Preferred Solution: Re: Satellite L300 - Keep recovery partition when using DBAN

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Re: Satellite L300 - Keep recovery partition when using DBAN

I don?t use DBAN and cannot give you proper answer but one thing I must say: create recovery DVD using preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery disc creator? and after doing this you can do whatever you want.

If something goes wrong you can install OS using these discs.
Please note: when you install own Win7 using non-Toshiba disc saved recovery image has no sense anymore because you will not be able to start HDD recovery anymore. To get factory settings again you must use Toshiba recovery DVDs.

My niece asked me to re-install her Toshiba Satellite L300 laptop, because the windows installation is rather buggy. She didn't have a recovery disk. Using Toshiba's Recovery Disk Creator I tried creating a recovery disk.

However, the program wouldn't start. Checking the directory of the program, it would seem that the program simply isn't there. Afterwards, I checked the data partition of the laptop.

There was a map with HDD recovery. However when using Windows' advanced boot (F8 before Windows startup) there was no choice of repairing the notebook. They only choices were the standard windows options (Save mode, normal start, etc.).

In short, it seems impossible to re-install the notebook with the current information at hand.
What would be the next course of action? Is it possible to order a recovery CD from Toshiba?

Another niece has the same notebook, would it be possible to use that notebook to create a recovery disk?

I'll appreciate and look forward to your reactions.

Answer:Recovery disk Creator & data partition won't work - Satellite L300

It looks like something has been changed on the HDD?
However, fact is you?ve no Recovery disk and you cannot use HDD recovery option.

This means you need to order a new Recovery disk from Toshiba.

You can do this here:

PS: one tip? if you would use a search option of this forum, you would find the right answer too ;)

I'm going slighty crazy! I have just bought an L300 laptop and i was totally reassured I could partition the drive. I have partitioned many drives in my life and know what I'm doing (mostly) - but this one - I may send it back to the store.

It has a 250 GB hard drive - with main disk c, smaller volume d and 2 hidden volumes. I want to make 4 further volumes (personal, music, images and office). I have used the Vista partition utility and it won't let me (it says it will create dynamic drives - I just want the extra simple drive volumes) and the store recommended Disk Director

Can anyone tell me how to do this - it has been a simple operation on every other computer I have bought

Answer:How do I partition the HDD on Satellite L300?

Hallo Jenifer

At the beginning just one question: Have you created recovery DVD?
Please don?t do anything with partitions before you have created recovery DVD for further Vista installation.

After doing this you can do with HDD what you want. Please note: after changing existing HDD structure you will not be able to install Vista using HDD recovery procedure (F8 > Repair my computer).

Have you tried to change partitions using Vista options in ?Computer Managament??

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 laptop and I would like to make an additional partition beside the already existing C: and the hidden partition. I have created the recovery discs and I want to use partition magic for the partitioning process (no new installation of windows xp). Can anyone tell me if using partition magic will have unwanted effect on possible recovery from the created disks?

Thank you in advance

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 - using partition magic

Usually you can do this with Windows option in disc management but can you please tell me something at first?

Do you use Vista or WXP? I ask this because if you use preinstalled Vista the HDD must already have two partitions. Please check it out in Windows explorer.

Is hidden partition described as EISA (WinRE) partition?

How do you use the data part for my documents? TIA

You can make a folder on the second partition and can store the needed files (documents, photos) in particular folders.

Running "Vista" with a 120GB HardDrive, and need more space.

Have bought a 500GB SATA drive. I am worried that the Recovery Software will set the new drive up with a 50/50 Partition. Is this the case or will it allocate 50Gb to E:/ and the rest to C:/?

As the Manual states that if I change the partition sizes the the recovery software will not re-install in the future?

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 - New partition sizes after HDD exchange

As far as I know the Toshiba recovery disk allocates always 50% disk space to each partition. That means on 500GB drive you will have two partitions with ~250GB disk space on each partition.
If not or you want to change something, you can use the disk management tool of Windows:

I think the manual means you can?t use the HDD recovery procedure anymore if you change the partition size.
But with the Toshiba recovery disk you are on the safely side and so you can always restore factory settings every time. :)

The vista on my L300 will not start.

I try to use the modem for the first time but it couldn't contact the line. So I remove it in the "device manager".

After the restart the vista start screen appears only for 3 seconds then the notebook reboots. There is no way, no safe mode....

Contact the hd as an external drive XP say "unknown" 0 byte, with Linux its named correct as "vista" and I could open all folders.

I have no recovery. The DVD burning with the Toshiba recovery program failed tree times and so I give it up.

the hidden partition is ok. On my notebook from an other manufacture I can recover from this hidden partition. Is there any way to do this on my L300?

Well, for the first time in 8 years I had to do a system recovery using the disks i created when i first bought my l300-13s using the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.
I had inadvertantly deleted the HDD Recovery partition when i set out to do a clone using a bigger HDD.

What I want to find out is instead of making recovery disks to DVD can i make a recovery USB flash drive?

Answer:Satellite L300-13S - Recovery USB instead of Recovery DVD Disks?

When you open Toshiba recovery media creator you can see options which media can be created. I?m not 100% sure but I think on old L300 there was option for recovery DVDs only so I think you cannot create recovery USB.

I recently bought "Toshiba Satellite L300" which had Windows 7 operating system but the Recovery CDs had Windows XP.
And my hard disk was single partition and Microsoft office was not working on this notebook and I used that CD to fix these problems.

But I lost my previous Windows 7.

Now it is Windows Xp SP 3 on my computer.
But I am not satisfied with XP want Windows 7.

How can i get it again for free?

Please let me know that what is right Recovery CD for "Toshiba Satellite L300". ?

Answer:What is right Recovery CD for Satellite L300?

>I recently bought "Toshiba Satellite L300" which had Windows 7 operating system but the Recovery CDs had Windows XP.

Hmm? this is strange? I have no clue what Satellite L300 this is but usually an L300 series was preinstalled with Vista Home Premium

So I?m wondering why Win 7 was preinstalled and why you get Win XP recovery disk?

Usually the L300 should be equipped with an HDD recovery partition which would contain the Toshiba image.
It should be able to recover the new notebook using the HDD recovery and this should help you reinstall the Vista OS.

In my opinion you should talk with your dealer? maybe the notebook was a replacement device????
Who knows?

Problem's with SATELLITE L300-13R, fails to start Vista.
Pressing F12 with recovery dvd, starts loading from dvd, then stops after about 30 second leaving a blank screen.

We also have seen the following message

STATUS: 0xc00000e9
INFO: An unexpected I/O error has occured

There is also an explanation that it may be due to an external device that has not been disconnected properly or a hardware error.

The recovery discs worked fine a few weeks ago.

Any other ideas?

You could start this press F8 at the beginning.

Hi there,

Can anybody help me please.

My satellite pro L300 laptop crashed which I have had repaired.
Unfortunately I have no recovery disks for the operating system eg Windows Vista.

I can not find how to get these disks from the Toshibe website or to be honest what these disks are correctly refered as.

Any help would be appreciated..

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 - Where to get the Recovery DVD

The notebook supports the HDD recovery option. This means that you can reinstall the Toshiba image without using the Recovery DVD. You have to boot notebook and press the F8 button. The advanced boot menu will appear and there you should choose the first option ?Repair my computer?. Then choose Toshiba recovery (last option) and start the installation.

After this installation you could use the Toshiba preinstalled burning software called ?TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator? to create a own recovery DVD

But if you have formatted the HDD the repair option will not work because the recovery folder was also deleted. In such case you will be not abele to create the own Recovery DVD.

But you could order it from here:

You can determine the type of WLAN card if you check the device and vendor ID in device manager. Enter both ?codes? on this website and you see what WLAN car you have:

Regarding your question about partitions on HDD you should look in disk management. Maybe you have to format the partition first or create an extended partition.

Answer:Recovery issue with Satellite L300

Hello Andy

Unfortunately there is no some kind of ?magic solution?. Either recovery installation works or not and there is no way to get it work somehow.

All you can do is to start recovery installation again, if possible. Please do this and send some feedback.

To be honest I don?t understand why you didn?t create recovery DVDs following Toshiba?s advice. If something goes wrong with HDD or HDD recovery image cannot be used you will be able to use recovery DVDs for OS installation.

Hi all, is it possible to boot the recovery image from an L300 in DOS?

The reason I ask is, I have a laptop that will not boot in any way shape or form. If put in a Vista disc and go to DOS prompt I can see the recovery partition & files, so is this possible or what are my options?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite L300 - Can I start the recovery from DOS?

> , is it possible to boot the recovery image from an L300 in DOS?
I doubt this is possible?

What you could do is to start the Toshiba HDD recovery procedure pressing the F8 button.
Then a boot menu should appear and there you should choose the first option called ?Repair my Computer?.
Then a new window should open providing a option called Toshiba recovery.
Choose it and usually the HDD recovery should start.

But this procedure is possible only if the second partition and the HDD recovery folder have not been changed

I need help using system restore.

I have a Toshiba L300 1A3 wines. vista.

The system fell, tile lack of recovery. Attempting to repair through F8 initially went, everything was going according to the directions and suddenly the computer turns off after a few seconds to turn on and nothing.

Nothing works, None, F8,, 0 '' and others.

There are only F2 and F12. After pressing any key is only a sound signal and nothing works.
Is there a chance to revive it or is it better to give somewhere to the site?

Answer:Satellite L300-1A3 - recovery problem

First of all: this is English language community - Please post in English!

Now some questions:
Is HDD recognized by BIOS (first BIOS page)?
If not, the HDD is dead and you would need to replace the HDD.
After that you would need to use Toshiba recovery disk in order to install the system again.

If you don?t have such disk, you will need to use Microsoft Windows CD to install the OS.
Essential drivers are available on Toshiba EU driver website.

By the way: such questions were posted many times in this forum. Go through singles threads and read the recommendations.

Hi all!

Have tried numerous places and can't find the answers I'm looking for, so here I am.

My nephew has a Toshiba Satellite L300 - 149 that won't boot up past the Windows Vista log in screen.

I want to do a full system restore on it (ie. back to factory settings) .

Now, it was shipped without recovery discs as seems to be the norm these days so, after much seraching I found the directions for pressing either the F8 and the zero key on boot up.

Now.... F8 brings up a menu (zero key does nothing) but the menu (Advanced Options or something) DOES NOT include the option to repair the system. It brings up a list of other things including....

There are a couple of other options too, but not a one that offers a complete recovery.

Can anyone shed light on how I can do a full restore via the HDD, or whether this model even supports the option? (There's been absolutely no tampering with the OS since it was purchased.) Failing that, where can I get restore discs from?

I hope you can help.
I want to restore a L300 laptop back Factory Defaults, (XP).

I'm not able to boot to Last known good config or any Safe Mode anymore after several viruses infected the laptop and the restore points failed after antivirus packages identified them as infected and removed them among other items.

I have the Original Toshiba Recovery Disk and it loads fine and goes through the motions of unpacking...

...Finishing on 'Remove Media', and I click OK. Lastly clicking exit on the recovery application.
The laptop powers off.

I turn the laptop back on, and screen flickers a couple of times, shows windows logo and reboots. This repeats.

Run out of ideas....

F2 Bios setting look ok.

What can I do?

Answer:Recovery does not complete on Satellite L300

Not sure what could cause this but I think you should start with HDD check.
I use very nice freeware software called Drive Fitness Test. Use this software in order to check the HDD for malfunction.

If the tool would detect some HDD problems, then you should replace the software.

By the way: are you able to boot the notebook using an Live CD lie Knopix Live CD (Linux) or an Windows live environment WinPE or BartPE? Check this.
Usually the live cd does not need any installation? you boot simply from the CD in order to load the OS.

I don?t think that your A100 recovery disk will run on L300.
Both notebooks are completely different and were equipped with different hardware specifications and therefore the drivers which are on the A100 will be not compatible with L300.

Furthermore I doubt that you will be able to perform the Recovery setup using the A100 disk on L300. Usually you should get an error message.

Purchased laptop 3 months ago, my son has homework on it (40 pages). Laptop suddenly stopped working. When I try and boot it up it tries to start laptop in repair mode, loads files, goes to load up vista then I get grey screen saying (System recovery options) installed programme cannot start turn off computer.

Gone through every single f8 routine and the only one of interest is disable auto restart on system failure where I get error message : Stop oxoooooo24 (ox00190444,ox85a6bdeo,oxc0000102,0x00000000).

Didn't create recovery disc so phoned Toshiba have received put in and loaded file up It eventually comes to a point where to continue it will erase all data on disc. Which is what I don't want. Then took disc out, but it had loaded enough drivers to enable me to have a look in dos. When I look for the C drive, come back with a messagesaying unreadable. When I look in the D drive there are files including one saying HDD recovery. (i assume vista automatically partitions disc)

Anyway any suggestions? There is one file I need which is a works document (wps). Is there anyway I can recover from the d drive in HDD recovery through dos? any suggestions?
If I run the recovery disc will it delete both partitions or just work on C: and then through D: I maybee able to recover document?

Answer:Question about HDD recovery on Satellite L300

As I can see you have tested all options using F8.
Does it mean you have tested ?safe mode??
Can you start notebook in ?safe mode??

If your work is saved on partition D you can start recovery installation (F8 ? Repair my computer) and Vista will be installed again but all data saved on partition D will be there again.
- When you use HDD recovery option - partition C will be deleted only.
- When you use recovery DVD the whole HDD will be formatted.

If you have the recovery DVD then you could use it in order to restore the notebook to factory settings.
Many people deleted the HDD recovery image on the second partition and were NOT able to create the recovery disk. But if you have such disk then the HDD recovery files are not needed to perform the recovery procedure.

I was wondering if there was any way this could be fixed or if there's another way to recover my computer.

You could recover the notebook using the Recovery DVD which you have hopefully created before this issue happened?
Did you create such recovery DVD?

If not then only the HDD recovery option can be used.
For this you have to press F8 after notebook has been powered up.
Then choose ?Repair my Computer?.
Then a new window will appear and then you could choose Toshiba Recovery.

If this procedure will not start up and if you will be not able to use the HDD recovery then you need a Toshiba recovery DVD.

If you didn?t create the recovery DVD then you could order it from here:

You cannot download this.
The Toshiba Recovery disk creator is preinstalled and you should always create the recovery disk BEFORE changing the OS or something on the HDD.
Saving the recovery files on another partition will not help you because the Toshiba Recovery disk creator will not recognize this?

Now, you will need to order the Recovery disk if you want get back the notebook?s factory settings.

We have a Satellite L300-149.
Was running really slowly so wanted to reset it to factory settings.

Did the 'press F12 when starting, put disk in' etc etc BUT have a horrible feeling that I put a disk in that actually belonged to a different Toshiba we used to use a U300.
The 'give away' was that the user manual for the U300 is now on the desktop on the Satellite :-/

I hoped that this wouldn't be a major problem BUT the F8 key has now disappeared making it impossible to connect to the internet.

I looked online and read that the L300 sometimes doesn't come with a disk as the info is kept on a separate part of the hard drive so hoped I could reset it back to factory settings again but when I click F2 on start up and go to the option to restore it, noting happens.

Can anyone please help??????

Answer:Help needed with system recovery Satellite L300-149

Forget the HDD recovery now?
You have recovered the system using another disk and this has deleted the HDD recovery image files. So this option is NOT possible!

You are right? the L300 and all other notebooks are not delivered with Recovery disks.
The recovery disk has to be created using the preinstalled software called Recovery Disk Creator. But this is also NOT possible because you removed the preinstalled system and the files which are needed for such recovery disk are not available anymore!

But if everything work properly except of the WLan FN + F8 key, then I would recommend to install only the Wlan driver. I think the key does not work because the right WLan driver is not installed.

I think the Satellite L300-149 supports the Wlan Realtek RTL8187B chip.
So install the right Wlan driver which you can find here:

I have a disk that I made when I bought the computer but I cannot start using it untill I make sure that only one disk is required (if more than one disk is required and I start the recovery process I believe I will render the computer unusable). I know that recent Toshibas come with multiple DVDs so it's definitely worth my checking before I do anything.

Oh and the recovery partition is gone due to an "aggressive" installation of linux, so that's not an option for us (it's new user is a windows user).

I cannot find this information on the internet or in the manual so I would be grateful if anyone out there has this information.

Best wishes to all

Answer:Satellite L300-1AQ - How many recovery disks required?

Hi DiodePrridge51b,

If Toshiba recovery disk creator required 1 disk only, you need only 1 recovery disk to restore factory settings.

It?s always depending on the notebook model and OS how much disks you need but if only 1 disk was required it?s enough and you start recovery installation. :)

Will the recovery disc with reference GMR400712PT0 run on Toshiba L300?

Thank you!

Answer:Recovery Disc (GMR400712PT0) and Satellite L300

As far as I know Satellite L300 was delivered without recovery DVD and only with HDD recovery so I presume it is not original recovery DVD.

Where have you find it?
By the way: is Portuguese your native language?

I'm in desperate need of assistance, hope someone can help me here.
On booting up laptop one day I got the dreaded ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM.

So I bought a recovery disk from the media shop for my laptop.

Now, I've tried all the F8 stuff but this doesn't work for some reason on this laptop.

Anyways, disk arrived and did exactly what it said on the back:
Insert disk and powerdown machine
Press F12 on boot up and select Optical Drive.

Right now when it powers back up, I get the WINDOWS IS LOADING FILES.
Then the MICROSOFT CORPORATION (with the bar above it), once this goes on a few seconds the CD/DVD drive stops and then get a black screen.

It doesn't go any further than that.
Tried restarting laptop without disk in, and all that is coming up then is
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

What do I do?????
Can I get hold of the Media Shop and tell them that the disk doesn't work? if so what is their e-mail address?????

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite L300 - Recovery disk stops

In my opinion it?s really hard to say what the reason is for this. It could be also an issue with the CD/DVD drive or the HDD.
So have you tested a Microsoft installation disk? You can try it with a XP or Vista disk from Microsoft. If you have booted from it try to format the HDD. Sometimes it?s necessary to format the HDD before you can use the Toshiba recovery disk. On this way you can also test if your CD/DVD drive is working.

If the Microsoft disk is also not working it could be a problem of the HDD. You can check the HDD with a diagnostic tool like Drive Fitness Test. Google is your friend to find it ;)

Good luck and if you have more questions, please let us know!

I have had Windows reinstalled on my laptop after having a problem with BIOS (result of having windows and ubuntu on the same machine! However I know want to make a recovery disk as I forgot to to do that before. I have downloaded the Recovery disk creator but no longer have the recovery partition as they wiped everything when windows was reinstalled.

Any ideas on what is best to do?

Thanks :)

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-1G5 - Where to get Toshiba recovery disk?

That's the point that you had to do it when bought your laptop. Now, you can't make it as it's not available anymore on your laptop. Installing Ubuntu you wiped it.
Now, you can:

1 Order [Recovery disk|] from Toshiba for money
2 Get windows copy disk to install. All drivers you can find on the [European Toshiba Driver Page|]

I have today taked delivery of a bright, shiny, brand new recovery disk, direct from Toshiba. I was under the impreession it would wipe everything from the hdd and recreate a factory install with HDD recovery partition (which is what I want) but it fails every time at the same place with the following error message:-

[WARNING] W\:sources\boot.wim [uncompress File: (seq. 90) -> file corrupted in block at offset 024D8020

Any ideas how to solve this or have I waited 2 weeks for a dud CD??

Answer:Satellite L300 - Fails during recovery installation

I have also Satellite L300 but never had a problem with the Toshiba recovery disc.

What happens if you install Windows using a Microsoft disc? Does it work or do you get an error message too? If yes it might be a hardware issue, HDD, RAM or something else.

Furthermore I did read here in forum that it?s sometimes useful to format the whole HDD before using Toshiba recovery disc.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite L300 and erroneously I deleted the HDD recovery folder located in the partition E, now I cannot anymore make a recover of my system in the case something goes wrong. I am wondering how to reinstall HDD recovery disk creator.

Answer:Satellite L300 - Recovery folder deleted

If you have deleted the HDD recovery folder you can?t create a recovery disk anymore.
You are also not able to reinstall Windows without disk.

Reinstalling the Toshiba Recovery Disk creator will not solve this problem. This is only the program that doesn?t contain the files for recovery.

So in your case you need a recovery disk. You can get one from a local ASP or you order here a new one from Toshiba directly:

I have a Satellite L300 1AS Laptop running Vista and I want to restore back to factory settings as when bought.

I created the 2 DVD restore discs when first setup.
When I boot from DVD drive with restore discs I get to choose language then that's it. When I click 'next' I can't go any further. I can move mouse but that's it. I have tried booting up then pressing F8 and then repair Windows but only get a black screen and nothing else.

Is there anything else I can try to format my drive back to factory settings

Answer:Satellite L300 - Nothing happens if I start the recovery disk

What is the reason you want to run Recovery in the first place? Was it not booting properly? Was it giving a BSOD?

Can you hear noises from the Hard Disk?

Test the Hard Disk for errors by using DFT.
DFT Download:

Download the ISO File and burn it to a CD-R Disc (There is also a Floppy Disk version if that's easier).
If you dont know how to burn an ISO file, read this guide:
Restart your laptop and boot from the DFT Disc.
Choose the "Advanced" Test and let it run (it may take an hour or so).
If you see a red message box, the HDD is faulty.
An error od 0x70 means there are bad sectors and the HDD needs replacing.

Also test the RAM for errors.

Answer:Satellite L350 - Can I use the recovery disk from the L300?

You could try but it may be missing Drivers or it may BSOD depending on the hardware differences.

Can you run Recovery from the HDD? Press F8 when Windows starts and choose the Repair/Recovery option.

Otherwise you would need to buy a replacement recovery disc from Toshiba.

Yesterday my Laptop L300-20D completely crashed.
When I restarted it, it wouldn't load up so i switched it off and it took me to recovery.

When the recovery was finished it restarted again and started to boot up, but after a few seconds it blue screened. I tried safe mode. Nothing. I went back to recovery and it told me that recovery wasn't working.

I have no idea why it crashed bacause i hadn't dropped or banged it.
I remember it making this weird click sound, like it would click repeatedly 8 times really fast, and then stop for a second and do it again.

I have no idea what is wrong with it??

Answer:Satellite L300-20D crashed - BSOD after recovery

> I remember it making this weird click sound, like it would click repeatedly 8 times really fast, and then stop for a second and do it again.
This sounds like a HDD issue and I think the HDD is crashing so it causes this weird click sound.

In your case I would check the HDD using a special diagnostic tool like Drive Fitness Test. Use Google to find this tool or another one. It?s freeware and easy to use. If you download the iso-image it creates a bootable disk where you can start this test from.

Alternative you can try the Toshiba recovery disk. Normally the recovery disk works always.

Pls help

Pls advice also how to check Windows XP is of 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks again

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-10Q - Can't install with the recovery disk and XP SP2

If you try to install your notebook with the Microsoft installation disk you need the SATA drivers. You can find it on the Toshiba website.
You must load the drivers from an external FDD or you integrate it in a new CD with nLite (

For the recovery disk you don?t need such drivers because they are already on the disk.
If you get the same problem with the recovery disk you should check your HDD with Drive Fitness Test (Google is your friend).

It seemed easy but now after the first part (a command window with a percentage) it told me that the HDD recovery had failed.
What can I do now as I cannot use my computer, I don't have a Vista disk because Toshiba claimed I could recover from the harddrive I could use XP if there is no quick fix as I have a disk for that but how easy is it to find and install all the drivers, by the way it's an Satellite L300.

Did you try to start the HDD recovery again?
Simply press the F8 button after notebook powering up and choose ?Repair my Computer?.

Usually this should help to start the HDD Recovery again.

If this will not be possible then you will not be able to recover the notebook without the Toshiba Recovery disk.

Switch your notebook ON and press F8 several times and you will enter Advanced Boot options

Hey there,

can anybody help? I got a Satellite L300 and today I wanted to reset everything. So I started a product recovery. Pity I did not check the DVD before starting. It was scratched although I did not use it before. So recovery stopped in the middle of nowwhere. I can not finish recovery - I can not start computer - and I can not copy the disc on another computer (tried that of course).

Is there anywhere a site where I can download a disc image of the product recovery??

Thank you!

Answer:Satellite L300 - Can I download the recovery disk?

Hey horst,

You can?t download the Toshiba recovery disk but you can order a new one here:

By the way: If the preinstalled OS from Toshiba is still installed you can also use the HDD recovery option. Therefore go in advanced boot menu and select ?repair my computer?. After this you have factory settings again and you can create a new recovery disk.
But remember: It?s only possible on preinstalled OS. I assume it was Vista?!

My son has a Satellite L300-1AQ running vista. Suddenly the laptop will no longer load and the auto repair options fails too. There is a blue screen appearing but only for a second when I try the repair option - then the laptop shuts down. We do not have any recovery disks.

I also have a Satellite laptop L300D-13S which works ok and presume I could obtain a recovery disk from that - but prob diff drivers etc.

Can anyone advise me how best to my sons laptop (Im not concerned about data recovery as all backed up already) but do want to get it back to factory settings incl Vista. Not sure whether using a recovery disk from my laptop is an option to consider - instinctively it isnt as never that simple.

Any advice welcome please.

Answer:Satellite L300-1AQ - Can I use the recovery disk from L300D?

Hi mate,

I can?t imagine that the recovery disk from Satellite L300D will work on Satellite L300. The hardware platform is different because one machine is equipped with Intel CPU and the other one with AMD CPU so there is a big difference.

Furthermore in worst case it could be a hardware issue and in this case the recovery disk would not work?

What you can do now? I think you have to options: Either you install Vista from a Microsoft disk or you order a Toshiba recovery disk:

After the installation from the Microsoft disk you can download all drivers on the Toshiba website. Then you will get also ?factory settings? back but it takes longer as recovery disk because it contains an image where already all drivers and tools are included/installed.

I hope I could help you a little bit. :)

Okay, so I've lost all my disks for my laptop (story tl;dw) and then it dies. I order a new recovery disk image from Toshiba and start running repairs from it.

Firing it up, I press F12, select CD/DVD from the Boot Menu and press Enter.
It gives me a message 'Windows is loading flies..." and a progress bar.
Progress bar completes, clears the screen, then there's about thirty seconds of the 'Microsoft thinking bar' animation, the computer stops making hard drive/CD drive noises.

Nothing happens.

For ten minutes, nothing happens.

Except a chunk of my electricity bill is consumed by the blank backlit screen.

Any words of advice, support, etc. greatly appreciated.

Answer:Satellite L300-147 Recovery disk problem

At first I can say that recovery disc cannot be used for repairs. You can use it for clean OS installation only.
Described behaviour is definitely not OK and you should be able to see menu with listed language options.

What you can do?
I?m afraid not much. Set BIOS to default settings and try several times to see if you will be lucky and recovery installation will starts properly.
For testing purposes you can try to obtain Microsoft installation disc and see if operating system installation will starts properly.

Answer:Satellite Pro L300 - Can I reinstall Vista with the recovery disk?

The Toshiba recovery disk contains an image of the factory settings. That means if you use it you get back the settings from the first time that you have started the notebook.
So if you want Windows Vista back you must only use the Toshiba recovery disk.

But the Toshiba recovery disk wipes the whole HDD. That means you will lose everything and also your dual boot system with Windows 7. So backup your data first before you use the recovery disk.

1) Have I to partition and to format the new disk BEFORE starting with recovery disk(s) / DVD(s),

2) What is the reason the current disk is divided in two equal-sized partitions C: and D: , whereas
partition D: seems to be reservered for the system, but only 5 GB are used ?

3) What is the purpose of the 3.partition ("inactive") with approx. 1.5 GB space ?

Answer:Satellite L300; Questions regading Vista recovery on a new HDD

No because the HDD would be formatted during the recovery process.

> 2) What is the reason the current disk is divided in two equal-sized partitions C: and D: , whereas
partition D: seems to be reservered for the system, but only 5 GB are used ?
On the D partition you can find the HDD recovery folder and files. HDD recovery allows you to recover the notebook from HDD and in such case you don?t need the recovery disk

> 3) What is the purpose of the 3.partition ("inactive") with approx. 1.5 GB space ?
This is a Vista partition and is need for backup files. Vista is able to repair the OS if something will go wrong? for this the files are needed which are stored on this partition.

Then go back to the recovery disk, boot from the recovery disk and try to install the OS again?

my experience with computing is very limited, so I will be using very simple language and maybe some stupid words.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300. I want to reboot it because of some research and some discussions that have been made through it.
I know that even if I delete them in my history they still remain in the hard disk, HHD.
So I wanted to reboot my pc, I have contacted computing guy who sold me the pc and he said that I can use a recovery disk to get back my original windows but does it mean that this disk will also install the old memory?

In short I was to boot my pc to get rid of all the images, msn discussions, google search being made from my pc.
Its History, the ones that are still keept in the pc but I can't get access to.
I haven't created my recovery disk yet but will it include my old files and history? or just windows and the drivers?

Answer:Satellite L300 - Toshiba Recovery Disck, what does it memorize?

As I understand you want to format (you call it ,, reboot) your hard disk to remove all the information such as history, files that nobody can read it.
Please, remember if you even format your hard disk, it's still possible to recovery all the data from your hard disk.
As I know, there is a good software called Tech Erase, it can securely destroy all the data on your hard disk and almost impossible to recover it (depending what algorithm use choose). But I don't understand why you need it. Do you have something special?
About talking recovery disk, you can make a new installation but the information from old one can be recovered by the special utilities.

Hi I just installed Windows 7 on this standard Satellite L300-18D Laptop. I'm a computer novice really.

Anyway there is a HDD recovery file reserved by the OEM of Toshiba which I have been using occassionally to restore my computer to factory conditions whenever my Laptop becomes too slow or infected with a virus. But It restores Vista.

Since I have Windows 7 now, is there a way to do a system recovery straight to Windows 7 instead of Vista then Windows 7? The only way I'm aware of doing this is creating a system image from control panel (backup and restore) but it takes 25GB which is too much data to store. Can I replace the OEM Vista HDD recovery partition with a Windows 7 recovery one? The Toshiba HDD Recovery file only takes 4.68GB as compared with 25GB for a self-created Windows 7 system image.

Anyone know a solution?

kind regards

No. Something like this is not possible. Original Toshiba recovery image cannot be changed.

Last year I had been getting blue screen of death for a while and purchased on this site a recovery disc for my model of laptop. Turned out I didnt need to use it as it was a problem with Mcafee.
However just 6 months later my laptop started playing up, windows crashing, blue screen, etc

I thought I would use the recovery to clean it all up and start from scratch as there isnt really anything of importace on my laptop. I followed onscreen instructions and recovery from disc began, however it only got part the way through and then said it has failed. Resulting in lapton having no o/s or anything.

I have tried recovery from disc again and agin, but keeps failing.

I really dont know where I go from here. My laptop is just over 1 year old and i was over ?30 for recovery disc !!!

Answer:Satellite L300-1AQ - Recovery installation failure, no OS installed

Hi buddy,

Maybe it?s a hardware malfunction...

Have you already tried to install an OS from another disk? You can use a Microsoft Windows disk to install Windows. Maybe it will work and in this case only the recovery disk isn?t working properly (scratched or something else).

If the Microsoft disk doesn?t work too, I assume it?s a hardware malfunction. Therefore contact an authorized service provider. They can check your notebook.

Hi, i recently purchased a laptop from toshiba*

I accidently deleted the folder on my 'data' drive via formating the drive.
I was told i needed that folder within the hard drive to create my recovery disk

Now that folder is gone.
Is there any way in which i can still CREATE the disk or DOWNLOAD/AQUIRE the folder to use for the recovery process to create disk ??
Without resorting to paying for a new disk - [ which costs nearly £30 !!

Please try to help as i am stuck here ...

Answer:Satellite Pro L300-152: Deleted reocvery folder - But need Recovery DVD

Bad news buddy.
Without the recovery folder you will be not able to create the Toshiba Recovery disk.
Unfortunately but it looks like you will have to order the Recovery DVD.

HDD formatting was a bad move :(

I had a Satellite Pro M40 with XP Pro that died completely (hard drive). I have the recovery disk.

I now have two more laptops - an Equium and a L300, both with Vista. I would like to install XP on one of them (preferably the L300). Is it possible to do so using my M40 recovery disk?
A bit of googling suggests that differences in the size of the hard-drive can be an obstacle. My M40 drive was 40GB, these new drives are much bigger.

Has anybody tried this or have advice?

Answer:Will Satellite Pro M40 recovery disk install XP on Equium or L300?

This will not work. Before the recovery procedure starts the notebook will be identified. If the ?code? on recovery media doesn?t match code on the notebook the installation will be stopped.

SP M40 recovery on L300 ? no way.

want to create recovery discs for my Satellite Pro L300. User manual gives instructions fro Vista but machine is shipped with XP Pro.

Can anyone help?

Answer:Creating Recovery discs on a Satellite Pro L300 Running XP pro

Can you please post exact model number? I just want to check specification.

Anyway, as far as I know this model was delivered with preinstalled VISTA 32BIT BUSINESS and WXP recovery DVD. Do you still have this DVD?

I?m not 100% sure but I think WXP didn't have option for recovery disc creator. The whole story has started with Vista.

I have a Satellite L300 and have made a few sets of recovery disks as from what I read some makes work and some dont and so far none have.

Insert disk 1, press power on button and hold F12 down until the option for boot comes up.
Select CD/DVD then dos type box appears with X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe - startnet.cmd
and in the box Waiting for ODD to become available...

You can add as many dots after that as nothing proceeds further - hence three sets of recovery disks on three different brands of DVD any advice would be pleaseing!

Answer:Re: Satellite L300 - Recovery disks made but wont run

According to your description, the system recovery procedure does not start up and the ODD cannot read the disk.

In your case I would recommend recover the notebook using the Toshiba HDD recovery.
You can start the procedure from HDD; press F8, choose repair my computer, Toshiba HDD recovery.
Now the system restore should proceeds?

After the notebook has been set to the factory settings, check if there is a firmware update for this ODD (CD/DVD drive). If yes -> update the firmware.
I know you have tried three different DVD brands but you should still try to create a recovery disk using another DVD disk? I?m using TDK DVD ?R and had good experience using it. A friend of mine uses Verbatim DVD?R and never had any problems?

'Windows can complete the installation. Restart the installation'

I've tried this 6 or 7 times now and I am getting no where. I would really appreciate some help if possble.

Maybe you installed some new software? Please give some details about the recently installed applications or modifications which were done to your system..

Just out of interest.
I have not tryed this, but i hered you can only make one copy of the recovery disks, using the toshiba disk creator.

I just thought it would be quicker to post this question, rarther than try it out.
I do know it costs 30 to get a copy of these recovery discs, which led me to think are these for people who have not created recovery discs or people who have lost there copy of the recovery discs.

I myself have only one copy

No, you can make as many as you want. But it will only work on L300's

Hello all,

I have a Toshiba Satellite Series L300 (2008 model) laptop which originally had Vista but I installed Windows 7 Professional on it. I now wish to return back to Vista.

I noted that the 'Windows.old' folder created on the C:/ drive seems to be missing a lot of files and could have been altered since the date it was created. I think it would be too risky to use it to recover back to Vista.

So my question is can I use my original set of Toshiba Recovery DVDs to get back to Vista? I want to do a full factory reset to recover my system to when it was originally purchased with Vista.

If the Recovery DVDs is not an option and the only was is by using the Windows.old folder, if it is lacking important files could it leave my system corrupted? I am sure there is a way to get back to Vista by factory restore somehow.

Comments and feedback urgently required!

Thanks in advance.

Hi, after running fine for several months I shut my notebook down recently and when I went to boot it up again it told me there was an error with Windows and had to run the repair center.

Well after waiting for four hours and getting no-where I decided to use the recovery disks I got the last time I sent it away. After installing all the neccesary components it then told me it was installing Windows. After doing this for ten minutes I got a pop up block telling me that "Windows could not be installed on this hardware". After it shut itself down and I rebooted it told me the same message and suggest I reinstall so I tried the process again and it ended in the same result.

Whats the problem?

Answer:Satellite L300-215 - Recovery disk couldn't be installed on this hardware

I?m wondering... I never heard about such an issue.
If I understand you correctly, you got the recovery disks from Toshiba or have you created it yourself?

Maybe the recovery disks are not designed for this kind of notebook?
If you can test it with a Microsoft disk you should do this. Maybe it will work.

Furthermore it would be interesting to know if the mainboard of your notebook was exchanged before. Theoretically this could happen due missing DMI informations. In this case an authorized service provider can help you. :)

Please Help...

I'm trying to restore orginal settings through recovery process.
Having pressed F8 at the booting stage and chosen to recover the system it thinks about it and then comes back with the following error;

STATUS: 0xc00000e9
INFO: An unexpected I/O error has occured

There is also an explaination that it may be due to an external device that has not been disconnected properly or a hardware error.

I do not have anything connected and have re-booted the system several times to try to resolve the issue. I've also tried to re-boot to the last safe configuration but this has not helped (although has now given my sound card back to me as this along with any other issues have been a problem - hence the desire to recover the original system settings).

Any advice would be greatly apprciated.

Answer:Satellite L300: Recovery failure - unexpected I/O error has occured

Lets summary;

- You are not able to boot the Windows OS (even using safe mode)

- You are not able to recover the notebook using HDD recovery option.

- You don?t have a recovery disk

Well? in such case I don?t see any other solution as to order new recovery disk and then to try to recover the notebook using this disk.

You can order the recovery disk here:

Good evening

I have a Satellite L300. A month ago, I bought and install an upgrade for Windows 7 (I had Vista). Yesterday night my laptop was working fine and this morning when I opened it I got this error :

BOOTMGR is corrupt. the system cannot boot.

I did some research and tried to boot on the recovery disk. The laptop read the disk I get the Windows is looding files screen and then a Microsoft Corporation appears with a bar above it and then I get a blue screen that say :

process1_initialization_failed vista

Now what can I do to reformat my computer and reinstall it if I cannot load the recovery disk!!!

I tried to put my Vista DVD that I have for my other PC but I get another black screen error...

Can someone tell me what I can do now?

Is it because I have a recovery CD for Windows Vista and not 7?

If i got the installed factory default windows vista, then how can i create the recovery disk, and also can i create the recover usb-disk , so that i would be able to boot my system with that usb?

And also if i m having another same model machine, then can i use its recovery disk in the other machine having same model and OS.???
because right now I have two same toshiba machines model is Satellite L300-190.

Waiting for your response.

Answer:How to create Recovery disk using installed Vista - Satellite L300-190

I think this theme has been discussed a lot of time here in the forum.

You can create the Recovery disk using the Toshiba Recovery disk creator!
This tool should be preinstalled on your notebook if the notebook has been equipped with the HDD recovery option.

You could also try to restore the notebook using the HDD recovery option.
You have to press the F8 while notebook powering up and then have to choose the option called ?Repair my Computer?. Then new window should open and there you could choose the Toshiba recovery.

If you are unable to use the both procedures (HDD recovery and Toshibas recovery disk) then you could order the new disk from here:

That?s all

I have a Satellite L300 too and didn?t have any problems to create the Toshiba recovery disk. I used a Verbatim DVD-R media and generally I made the best experience with these DVD manufacture and DVD-R types.

In your case I would try this DVD media or the TDK DVD-R disks. If you can?t find it on the nearest computer store you can also order it online. Have a look on Amazon or eBay, there you can order such medias.

My Satellite L300 has just come back from Toshiba for repair under warranty and before having a chance to burn Recovery Disks came up with the BSOD. Removed hard drive and placed in a SATA cradle and ran chkdsk which repaired it to the extent that (back in the laptop) I could at least access the Recovery Console.

I selected return to Toshiba factory state (or something similar - can't remember the exact wording!). C prompt screen came up and all seemed to be going well until it came up with an error. Retried it twice but the error / failure notice came up both times. Tried to reboot to safe mode but no bootmgr. Removed the disk again and placed it in the SATA cradle and the C partition seems to have been wiped.

With no windows installation at all, is it possible to run the Toshiba recovery (start and holding 0 does nothing)?

Would a Windows Vista recovery disc do anything or enable me to reaccess Toshiba's recovery?

Any ideas? Help,Please!

Answer:Satellite L300 - Recovery wipes C drive then fails to rebuild

Hi mate,

Wait a moment, please! Which error message you get exactly and what you mean exactly with the SATA cradle?

Notebooks are country specific so which L300 you have exactly? This is important because the HDD recovery works different on the notebooks or let?s say there are different ways how to start it.

> With no windows installation at all, is it possible to run the Toshiba recovery (start and holding 0 does nothing)?
Another question: How you want to start the HDD recovery procedure if now Windows is installed? ;)
Right, that?s not possible!

In your case I would order a new recovery disk. You should contact the ASP in your country!

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-139 (Vista, 160GG, 2GB memory).

Hard disk has been damaged (when booting Vista, systems does not start at all, and every time only a blank screen with the mouse arrow is shown --> tried all choices + PE boot etc. but there is no access to the Recovery Console) and there is no possibility to run CHKDSK to fix this problem.

No recovery disks were created when the computer was new.

I removed the laptop hard disk and plugged it in to my desktop computer, but 2 partitions out of 3 were damaged and I managed to recover some data including:

c:\program files\TOSHIBA

Recovery of the data was done by using and external USB hard disk.

I copied all the data to the USB disk and started the TRORDCLauncher program (run as Administrator). All it does it removes my DVD-drive from vista and then fails with error (rough translation):
"Other process is using the drive or there is no drives available. Check the drive status. [OK]"

It seems that Recovery Images have been created with Windows PE Tools 2.0 (Imagex), but as the data is spreaded around the folders I have not been able to create the recovery disks manually.

Any Ideas and knowledge how to create the recovery disks with this data what I have or do I have to order the DVD's and wait for couple of weeks before getting the system up again?

Sorry but there is no chance you can create recovery DVD. Recovery DVD can be created if you use ?Toshiba Recovery creator? tool only and unfortunately there is no way to get it.

HDD recovery procedure using F8 can work only if the HDD configuration is not changed (new OS installed), the HDD recovery folder must be placed on second partition.
So with short words, you can do this just if the notebook has ?factory settings?. Now you cannot do anything but order new original recovery DVD for this notebook model.

You mean you cannot boot the notebook using the Toshiba Recovery disk which you have created?

Go to the BIOS and check if the CD/DVD drive is recognized. It should be listed on the first BIOS page.
If the CD/DVD drive is not listed then you should set the SATA mode to compatible and should save the changes.
After that try to boot again from the Recovery disk.

I also searched on the Toshiba European driver page for some info and found some details;

There is a firmware update for CD/DVD drive TS-L633A and TS-L633P.
This Firmware solve "Sometime not able to writing on DVD+R media".
The issue happens only DVD+R media, other kind of media have no problem.

In both cases you will get free service and if necessary service can order new recovery installations DVD for you.

Hi Everyone,

I?ve created the Toshiba Recovery Disc (s) and think I need to use them now. My Satellite L300-1AQtaking AGES to load when I power up, it sometimes freezes for no obvious reason (It's telling me memory is OK, so not a RAM problem) and does other odd little annoyances.

Should I use the Recovery discs do you think? Is it straight forward? Does it give step-by--step instructions please? OS is Vista.

Many thanks

Answer:2 Years old Satellite L300 started playing up - Recovery Disc question

Yes, you should use recovery discs and make clean OS installation. After 2 years of usage I think the OS should be ?refreshed?.

After clean OS you will see that notebook will run much better than before.
Please optimize also OS: remove all useless stuff from the system and configure Windows start-up. This will make start-up much faster.

Hi all,

I just bought an L300 model number PSLB0C 08R08C.
I was unable to create a recovery disk, I was getting error message saying it can't create the disk because it's scratched or has dirt on it, I wasted 5 brand new DVDs.

I went to the store and replaced it with another unit, but got the same problem (I have not tried another DVD brand though)

Second issue with this unit, the screen flickers once every time it comes back from an off state.
3rd issue, the wireless card disappears from the device manager, until I restart.
Laptop was made in China ;-)

Any suggestions are much apprecaited

Answer:Screen flickers on Satellite L300 and I'm unable to create a recovery disk

Hi there,

that is indeed strange that you were unable to create a recovery disk, and that the problem recurred even after swapping the laptop with another unit from the store. however, if you have not tried another DVD brand then i would suggest doing this if the laptop is claiming the disk is scratched or has dirt on it. i am unsure if toshiba actually manufactures blank DVD's but if they do, this would be a starting point, as it would be expected toshiba hardware would work happily with their own branded DVD media. however, if you cannot find toshiba dvd then use another trusted brand, e.g. Imation or TDK. with my experience, i have tried many brands of DVD's and have found TDK to be very reliable.

with regards to the second issue, this may be related to the graphics card in the system, or could be due to the performance of the laptop itself. check that you have the latest driver for your graphics card and that all computer settings are optimised/hard drives are defragmented and junk files removed. with your third issue, this issue could also be related to driver problems, again check your regional toshiba drivers website for the latest drivers. failing this, i would suggest backing up your data and then restoring back to a factory state, then installing updated drivers immediately. i hope this info can help you in some way.
