Satellite L350-20F - Recovery Disks work to a certain point, still no boot

Question: Satellite L350-20F - Recovery Disks work to a certain point, still no boot

Can anyone help please?

I own a Satellite L350-20F running Vista
After suffering a blow to the laptop it stopped working. (no surprise)
Have used recovery disks to try to restore unit, but nothing happens it just reboots to the running ants with microsoft corporation written underneath, then check disk starts reporting no bad sectors, after this fins it reboots to running ants again.

Am getting blue screen error message every now and again, then goes to windows recover screen to either launch startup reapir (done this lots times still no progress) or start windows normally.
Tried to repair but just keep going through the stages of putting disks in and going through disk repair.

Is it easy to change HDD inside (i know how to on PC but no clue in laptop)(out of warranty))
I also own a satellite L300-25H is it poss to network them together and do a full format of broken one to see if that helps?
The only thing is will i be able to reformat new HDD with recovery disks to put back on Vista or will i need to pay out for a new OS?

Many Thanks

Preferred Solution: Satellite L350-20F - Recovery Disks work to a certain point, still no boot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Satellite L350-20F - Recovery Disks work to a certain point, still no boot

Yes it is easy to replace the HDD, just unscrew the two screws in the HDD Panel on the Base.

If there is a HDD chassis/bracket on the drive, you will need to transfer the bracket to the new HDD.

If you have no Recovery Discs, you can order the discs from the Toshiba website for a small fee.

My L350 has suffered a disk problem and would not boot. It attempted an automatic recovery but failed. I have rebooted from the system recovery cd's I created when the laptop was first purchased but the recovery fails at image 5.

Does anyone have any advice?

Answer:Satellite L350 will not boot or recover using the recovery disks

Have you used these recovery discs in the past?
If the discs are OK I can imagine there is some problem with HDD but I?m not 100% sure about that.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L350 which I bought some years ago

Originally it was a vista home premium laptop and I opted for the Toshiba windows 7 upgrade and its been pretty much trouble free .

However recently something went a bit weird and things just were not working well (it would not always log you out and never seemed to shutdown correctly) and various other applications did not run correctly.

After a few uninstalls ,reinstalls, scans and Microsoft patches did nothing I decided to take the plunge and use the recovery disk.

I had bought one from Toshiba when I got the machine originally and had made one myself before the upgrade to windows 7 and one again after.
I still have the windows 7 upgrade dvds so I can apply them after if I had to start back on vista again.

The only other big change has been a RAM upgrade to 4gb - I still have the original RAM if I need it but before all this there were no hardware issues reported and chkdsk was fine also.
So to me it was the o/s that was the problem.

I have now tried all the recovery disks and they all have the same problem reporting that imagex cannot uncompress the second file image as it is corrupt at block 90 ? I don?t have this actual message to hand
but can update later.

I can?t see that I?m doing anything wrong as all i do is put the dvd in the drive and restart the laptop with F12 to boot off the recovery DVD and follow the on screen commands.
Have you any reports of such of this p... Read more

Answer:Recovery disks not working for Satellite L350

Thats very strange that al recovery discs show the same error message. As far as I know when you start recovery image installation the HDD will be formatted, new partitions created, recovery image copied on second HDD partition and as last step is recovery image installation.
>I had bought one from Toshiba when I got the machine originally and had made one myself before the upgrade to windows 7...
Have you tested both of them in the past?

Generally speaking all you do is right. In my opinion the problem can be recovery image itself or maybe HDD has some failure on certain sectors.
If you can obtain second HDD somewhere exchange it, set BIOS to default settings and test recovery installation again.

I just restored my Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit Operating System on my Toshiba Satellite L350-170 using the recovery discs I created 4 years ago when I first bought my laptop.

Having restored the OS, it has taken the best part of a day to install all the Microsoft updates, including Vista Service Pack 2, and other programmes I use (e.g. MS Office, Real player, AVG etc.).

Now everything is up to date, I have created a new system restore point on the hard drive and run the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator again. Just out of interest, will the recovery discs be created up to the last restore point, or will it just reproduce the discs I already have, which restore it to the factory settings?

If this only restores it to the factory settings, is there a way of creating a system disk to get it back to the point it's at now?

Answer:Do new recovery disks for Satellite L350-170 save updates?

Hi, no it doesn't work that way. Running Recovery will restore the HDD back to how you got it from the factory.

I have a L350-170 running Windows Vista home, I have recently purchase a recovery CD from Toshiba and now that it has arrived, it doesnt work.

I put in the CD and boot from the CD drive, I can hear the drive working and the screen says "Windows is loading files" and a bar appears at the bottom of the screen, after this the screen goes blank and all I am left with is a mouse pointer and a black screen.

Answer:Satellite L350-170 - Recovery Disk doesn't work

Did you test if the notebook would boot up using another bootable disk like Linux Live CD, WinPE or Win XP?
Please check this?this would help to determine if the issue is related to Recovery disk or notebook.

Please check also if the HDD is ok. For this test you can use an free HDD testing tool called Drive Fitness Test. Google for that.

However, it could be also an faulty recovery disk and in such case you should get in contact with the guys where you have ordered this disk? maybe you need an replacement.

Got this L350-212 running Vista Basic.

It loads up to the Toshiba splash screen prompting f2 for setup etc. but does not acknowledge f2 or f8 or f12 to boot recovery disc. Goes to black screen with steady cursor in top left corner ( _ ) not flashing. Waited quite a while to see if it was just realy slow but nothing.

Dont know what else to do... any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite L350-212 - Does not boot recovery disk

Hi buddy,

Have you checked if the CD/DVD drive is recognized properly in BIOS? Maybe that?s not the case so it doesn?t boot from recovery disk.

If you have another bootable disk, check another one. Maybe the recovery disk is scratched and can?t be read.

I have 3 recovery disks which were provided with my Toshiba (which was originally bought in the US for me by my brother although I am UK based). The laptop was originally running Windows XP Home Edition and Microsoft Works and is covered in Toshiba labels to that effect. When I try to restore the system using the recovery disks, the screen says it is installing Windows 95 ! Also, although It appears to be reformatting the hard drive, it only gets as far as 86% then stops ! (even if left overnight)

So I have two questions:

1) Can I get correct replacement start-up disks for XP?
2) Is there a likely reason for the 'lock-up' at 86%?

Hi folks,

Posting this question for my neighbour as he now has no internet access as laptop not working - Satellite C660 running Win7.

When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Tried to boot from Win7 DVD (Pressed F12 to get to boot options & changed to DVD), can hear the drive trying to access the dvd but then get the message 'failed'. Win7 DVD works in both my laptop and desktop pc's.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Answer:Satellite C660 Won't boot from HDD or recovery disks

> When powering up he gets the Toshiba screen then a blank screen with cursor at the top left flashing.

Possibly the HDD is dead.
You ca try to power up the unit and press F2
Now you should be able to access the BIOS.

If the HDD isn?t listed on the first BIOS page, then this means that HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS and this means that HDD is faulty.

Short answer: you cannot do this. Maybe if you have two HDDs (I didn?t tried this) but as far as I know your SP L40 has only one.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300-139 (Vista, 160GG, 2GB memory).

Hard disk has been damaged (when booting Vista, systems does not start at all, and every time only a blank screen with the mouse arrow is shown --> tried all choices + PE boot etc. but there is no access to the Recovery Console) and there is no possibility to run CHKDSK to fix this problem.

No recovery disks were created when the computer was new.

I removed the laptop hard disk and plugged it in to my desktop computer, but 2 partitions out of 3 were damaged and I managed to recover some data including:

c:\program files\TOSHIBA

Recovery of the data was done by using and external USB hard disk.

I copied all the data to the USB disk and started the TRORDCLauncher program (run as Administrator). All it does it removes my DVD-drive from vista and then fails with error (rough translation):
"Other process is using the drive or there is no drives available. Check the drive status. [OK]"

It seems that Recovery Images have been created with Windows PE Tools 2.0 (Imagex), but as the data is spreaded around the folders I have not been able to create the recovery disks manually.

Any Ideas and knowledge how to create the recovery disks with this data what I have or do I have to order the DVD's and wait for couple of weeks before getting the system up again?

Sorry but there is no chance you can create recovery DVD. Recovery DVD can be created if you use ?Toshiba Recovery creator? tool only and unfortunately there is no way to get it.

HDD recovery procedure using F8 can work only if the HDD configuration is not changed (new OS installed), the HDD recovery folder must be placed on second partition.
So with short words, you can do this just if the notebook has ?factory settings?. Now you cannot do anything but order new original recovery DVD for this notebook model.

When boot menu is shown on the screen put recovery disc into optical disc drive. After doing this choose CD/DVD drive and press ENTER. What happen when you do this?

ODD should start to read recovery disc and you should see the recovering menu on the screen.

I want to upgrade my Satellite L350 up to 4 GB RAM. BIOS accept 4096 MB.
But I cannot install an operating system (xp prof. or vista 32 bit)
My L350 boot from CD /DVD, but if the setup will start I have a restart.

My question is: will my Satellite L350-141 work with 4 GB RAM?

Answer:Does Satellite L350-141 work with 4 GB RAM?

I think there shouldn?t be a problem with the 4GB RAM.

But as you probably don?t known, the Microsoft Windows 32bit OS cannot use the full 4GB RAM due to the 32bit OS limitation.
Microsoft has published several articles and documents regarding the 4GB RAM issue.
If you want you can google for this issue.

Fact is that only the Windows 64bit OS (XP or Vista) would be able to use the full 4GB RAM.

Additionally the BIOS and the Chipset have to support the 4GB RAM to ensure that the notebook and the Windows would be able to use the full memory.

Best regards

Lenovo'ers I just got my ThinkPad a week ago. It could not complete its Windows Updates, seems there was corruption in the Windows Update registry (google 'windows update error 643', seems to be common). I tried a few Microsoft support tools to correct it, but in the end I was wasting too much time so decided to restore my laptop to factory state. I went to the ThinkPad tools from the Start Menu, where there was a tool to create system restore disks. I went through that process, and created "Boot" and "Data" recovery disks. I rebooted my laptop with the boot DVD, and it started the recovery. I opted to do a full factory reset. It started going through the process, but then stopped and asked  for the "Application and Drivers Disk 1". What? The disk creation process only produced a "Boot" and "Data" disk. I tried using the Data disk for Disk #1, and was relieved when that worked. Sadly, the process continued until it stopped again and asks for Application and Driver disk #2. Sadly, the 'Data' disk  does not work for this, and the restore process refuses to continue. I am stuck. My machine is now in a completely unusable state. The original parition has been wiped out, and the OS is not installed. Two questions: 1) what is wrong with the recovery process? Seems like a major problem with the tool producing 'Boot' and 'Data' disks, while the reinstaler expects different disks. How can this be?2) how can I restore my machine to factory s... Read more

Hello and welcome,
Sorry to hear about this
Your recovery partition is probably already wiped out by the aborted restore, but what happens if you press the "Think" button during boot?  (or whatever it's called these days)  That might have given you a factory restore option _before_ you tried the DVDs.
Failing that, give support a call and explain the situation.  They can send you a DVD set.  They normally charge for these, but in a situation like yours they are often provided free.  I can't speak for Lenovo - that's just my personal experience.

I have a friend?s Satellite L350 laptop which I attempted to repair, but the HDD is faulty, so badly I can't create restore disks. I cloned the image partition to another HDD (yes I created 2 partitions) which is a western digital, but for some reason when pressing F8 I can't get into the restore option, but I can on the faulty drive, is this because you have to use a Toshiba HDD only?

Thanks in advance

Hello Chris

It has nothing with Toshiba HDD. This option works when notebook is preinstalled with original recovery image. This with cloned partition will not work and HDD recovery option will not be listed in ?advanced boot options?.

Only when you install recovery image on this new HDD it will works.

One more thing: this old L350 works very good with Win7 32bit so if possible install it instead of using original Vista.

You can create an own Toshiba Recovery disk using the Toshiba Recovery Disk creator software.

I can access files on the disc via "MY COMPUTER" but can see a "SET-UP". I had previously used the discs to recover and it worked then no problem.

There is nothing wrong with the computer or any error messages

It looks like the boot master record was damage due to the starting the HDD recovery procedure.
I think you can get the notebook working only using the HDD recovery procedure again.
You have to press F8 after notebook powering up. Then choose ?Repair my computer? and then choose ?Toshiba recovery?.

Hopefully this will function?
By the way; Why you didn?t create a Recovery disk? This is strongly recommended in case something would go wrong with your HDD.

Hi all,

I am trying to fix my sister-in-law's Satelite L350-277 following a failed HDD. Prior to failure it was running Win7 Home Premium (32bit) which was preinstalled on HDD. I managed to run Belarc on it before it completely went, but wasn't able to create restore disk in time.

HDD failure appears to be due to bad sectors, and once failed, couldn't get past Startup Repair. Upon checking HDD (in USB enclosure), both C: and D: (backup partition) appeared intact, so guessed it was issue with MBR. I used Clonezilla to clone to new HDD and am now working on that - failing HDD is still as it was incase I need to clone again.

With the clone of the HDD, I first tried using bootrec.exe but some how managed to "break" C: and couldn't see anything in the partition.

BTW I am currently using a retail DVD copy of Win 7 to provide the "restore" functions. However the Toshiba Restore functions don't appear in the option list. So I then decided to just install the retail copy on C: to see if I could access the toshiba restore functions using data in D: That didn't seem to work either.

Then I came across this thread which gave me hope in being able to boot the Toshiba recory tool:

I was hoping that Vista and Win7 preinstalls would be very similar, however the HDD only has one recovery partition (D:\ HDDRecovery) and I seem to fall down at step 13. There are two boo... Read more

On one side I can understand your wish to install recovery image but on other side, for me personally, it is nothing but wasting your time for nothing. Generally speaking recovery image is designed not to be copied or manipulated so this guy was very lucky.

Problem is that recovery disc was not created after notebook purchase.

Maybe it sounds stupid to you but I recommend you to order original recovery disc for this machine.
You can order it on
It costs 30 Euro only. For this money you will get original recovery disc that includes activated operating system, all necessary drivers, tools, utilities and few additional and useful applications.

Using this disc you will be able to have perfectly working machine in 2 hours only.

One more thing: usage of this disc is unlimited and you can use it 1000 times and every time you will have activated and perfectly configured OS.

Hi briley,

Usually the Windows 7 drivers are not compatible to XP because the drivers are different and not compatible.

According the Toshiba website, Satellite L350 is not XP supported because there are no drivers for it but if you search for all L350 models (without model number) you canf find a Camera Assistant driver for XP.

I have a Satellite L350, Vista home premium SP1, (had it for about 4months)

And yesterday I got a black screen error on my laptop it said to restart it, so I did, then my laptop just wouldn't stat up any more, I have no idea why?

So I put in the recovery disks that came with my laptop to just reinstall every thing like if I just got it out of the box and as I follow the instructions that the Toshiba recovery wizard disk says, and as its "coping files" I get a blue screen error saying "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damages to your computer DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

And say to restart or what ever and just keeps doing that.
(Tech Info: STOP: 0x000000D1, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8D246FD7)
( usbccgp.sys - Address 8D246FD7 base at 8D23E000, Datestamp 47919053)

Then I restart my system and a black screen comes up saying "BOOTMGR missing"
So now I have nothing that works, I have retried the disks but same error with blue screen.
I have also tried doing the safe mood and docent come up, nothing works.
I?m in need of help!

Thanks for reading sorry for so much reading to do

Answer:Satellite L350 - BSOD during recovery and "BOOTMGR" missing

The reason why notebook doesn?t start (bootmgr error) is while the installation stopped with an BSOD. So you must reinstall the notebook again.

It looks like an USB problem because I have found this in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

If you have connected external USB devices to the notebook, remove them.
In worst case there is something wrong with the USB ports or controller and the mainboard must be exchanged.

I can't access the recovery manager on a Toshiba L350. I have tried holding down 0 (zero, both of them) at the start to access the HD-Recovery, but nothing happens. Is there something obvious I'm missing?

The reason I want to access is:
I have a Toshiba l350 with a partly installed windows here. At the moment, it gets "Starting Windows" and "The instalation program is started services" (in Norwegian) whichs stop with a popupbox saying "The computer unexpectedly restartet, or an unexpected error occured. The insatllation cannot procceed. To install Windows you have to click ok to restart the computer. Start the installation process again.".

What started the trouble was that during the last part of the installation (after Win7 became usable, but before everything was setup), escape was pressed and the computer was used normally.

I assume you are using an European notebook model and therefore you should try this;
- Press F8 while notebook powering up.
- Then choose ?Repair my Computer?
- Then ?Toshiba HDD Recovery?.

This should allow you to start the Toshiba HDD recovery process.

I got rid of the trojan, did a restore to date before loading AVG in hopes that my system would go back to normal. It still continues to be slow, explorer keeps locking up and all sorts of quirky things keep happening! Yikes.
I have the Recovery and Application CD that came with my laptop. Should I use the Recovery CD or should I try to just repair by using the F8 option? And if I use the Recovery CD what files will I lose, normally? I tried to search for a list of apps that are on that disc but found no info??

I have spent most of the day saving all my files on disc. I will lose some paid downloaded programs which I am willing to sacrifice if I can get my computer to love me again!!

Any advice would be helpful.

Answer:Satellite L350: What is better choice: Recovery disc or F8 repair?

>Should I use the Recovery CD or should I try to just repair by using the F8 option? And if I use the Recovery CD what files will I lose, normally?

I would recommend using the Recovery disk because the Recovery disk would format the whole HDD and will set the notebook to the factory configuration.
If you have some viruses on the HDD then the HDD format might be the best option in order to remove all the Trojans and viruses.

Help, please.

I have been reading through the User's Manual for my new lap top before setting it up and am feeling rather nervous.

The salesman said that it should open automatically when I start it up, and all I then had to do was install the printer and (say) my m/s word program and I would be up and running.

But it sounds as if I should first of all make some recovery disks.
How many disks are needed? DVD presumably - or D/L.?
Can the recovery disk(s) be made after other programs are installed?

Secondly, it mentions the online manual. Where do I find this?
I have a scanner and external Seagate HD, but these can be added later.
I am using the laptop as a desktop replacement for my five year old Mesh PC.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Satellite L350 - Question about Recovery disk creation

Yes, it?s very important to create the Recovery disk before you would change anything on your notebooks HDD.
After you have finished the Vista setup you should start the application called Toshiba recovery Disk Creator.
This application will help you to create the Recovery disk.

As I?m not mistaken you would need one DVD?. I recommend using an DVD-R.

Note; in some cases you can get an error burning the Recovery DVD. This can happens because not all disks are fully compatible. So if you would get such error please check different DVDs from different manufacturers

Have you tried the Toshiba recovery disk again? Does the same error occurs?
And it would be also interesting to know what is now? Can you boot into Windows or do you get an error message during Windows boot procedure?

Normally the recovery installation should be finished without any problems so in worst case it?s a hardware issue and you will need professional help from a notebook technician.

The screensaver on my new L350 will not work despite being turned on? Can anyone help me get it to operate?

Answer:Screensaver doesn't work on my Satellite L350

It would be interesting which OS do you use. So you should post this information.

It?s not easy to say what is wrong but you should look in the event viewer. Maybe there can you an error or what?s the reason for this error.

Make sure that you have all updates and Hotfixes for your OS installed. Visit the Microsoft Windows update website and install the latest updates.

My laptop Satellite L350 shows a blank screen.
After the welcoming text: "Toshiba leading innovation", there is only light on it an a non-blinking cursor.
With an external screen (and Fn F5) it's exactly the same: that screen also only has the non-blinking cursor.

What can I try?

Answer:Screen on Satellite L350 doesn't work

Sounds like Windows is corrupted. Do you have an L350 product recovery disc?

If you have important data on the HDD, you can connect the drive to another PC using a 2.5" USB Adapter to copy the files over.

Toshiba Satellite L350-170 - Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 2.00GHz, 2Gb, 250Gb, 17" TFT, DVDSM, VHP

My wife bought three weeks ago. Light use. Everything working fine, until a 'Startup Repair' dialogue appeared. Since then the machine wont boot.

Machine goes into 'Windows Error Recovery' immediately after Toshiba startup screen, and presents the following options;
1) Launch startup repair
2) Start Windows normally

Option 2 results in a blank screen, and eventually goes back to the 'Windows Error Recovery' screen.

Option 1 presents the Startup Repair dialogue box;

'Your computer was unable to start
Startup Repair is checking your system for problems...'

At this point the Toshiba laptop gets into an endless loop.

So what do I do now? There are no system disks provided with the laptop, so I can't reinstall the operating system. The reseller (Comet) is less than helpful and wont entertain any refund or exchange for a defective product.

Can someone please help!

Answer:Question - Windows Error Recovery loop on Satellite L350-170

Try this:

Press F8 button immediately after notebook has been powered up.
Then choose the first option called ?Repair my Computer?.
Then a new windows should open and there you could choose the option called Toshiba recovery.

Please note then this procedure would start the Toshiba HDD recovery and the OS would reinstall again. This would format the whole HDD and would set the OS to the factory settings.

In my eyes you can use this HDD recovery procedure or you can try to reinstall the OS using the Toshiba recovery disk.
Both procedures lead to the same results?

My hard drive died (completely) 3 days out of warranty.
Recovery discs didn't even load, all i had was a black screen and a mouse pointer.

So i bought a new hard drive. Problem i have now is how do i install Windows on the new disc.
What do i need to get from Toshiba?

Obviously i've paid for Windows Vista when i bought the laptop so i'm a bit confused about what to do next.
Will a restore disc work on a completely new drive?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite L350-235 Will a restore disc work on a completely new HDD?

The Recovery disk didn?t not arrive with the notebook because you had a option to create one using the preinstalled Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.

Now you need such disk which can be ordered here:

Boot from this disk and follow the instruction in the screen.
The recovery disk will work with new HDD too!

I'm eager to set win xp instead of current vista on Satellite L350 -17Z because some soft is not stable and faults, while under xp on desktop I had no problems. XP Compatibility mode doesn't solve this.

So I decided to do it in a cruel way as a notebook is new and hdd nearly empty, besides I have got used to xp. Still I tried to make a recovery, using TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator.

But?*during burning DVD there is a fault and message about some problems with calibration. I tried few disks - same result.

Answer:Satellite L350-17Z: Recovery disc creation issue - problem with calibration

Hi Snen,

It would be interesting to know what CD/DVD drive you have. Maybe you should try to update the firmware of the drive. For some Toshiba and Pioneer drives the website shows a firmware update. It?s worth a try! > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

And what kind of DVDs you are using for creating a recovery disk? I have good experience with DVD-R types and I use it from Verbatim.

I am having with my laptop.

My daughter was on the laptop and it just suddenly shut down.
When I try to turn it on it goes to startup repair and goes no further.
I have let it run for 18 hours and it still says its searching for problems.

Any ideas anyone.

Answer:Re: Satellite L350-171 don't boot up

Did you try to boot again and to use one of the options in ?Advanced boot menu??
Restart the notebook, press F8 and new boot menu should appear.
Here you can use option called ?Safe Mode?.

If the notebook will not boot up using this mode, try another called; Last good know configuration (advanced).

Last but not least you can try to restore the system choosing first option called Repair My Computer -> Toshiba HDD recovery.
Now the notebook should start the recovery procedure and should reinstall the OS

Using F2 on start up shows no hard disc. Will a new hard drive solve the problem on its own or will further action need to be taken to restore Windows as well as a new hard drive ?

Answer:Satellite L350-17P - no boot up

For some reason HDD is not detected and recognized properly. Try please to set BIOS to default settings and check it again. If the result is the same next step should be HDD exchange and test with new hardware.

In case that problem still exists the reason can be defective HDD controller. This is, in my opinion, worst case scenario. Mainboard is affected and repair can be pretty expensive.
Advice, offer it on eBay and sell as notebook for spare parts.

The Common Modules diver is *not working*.
The way it's not working is because when I try to install Toshiba Controls it tells me that "TOSHIBA Common Modules is not installed on your computer". I can continue anyway but it's not working (obviously). I tried versions 1.00.05, 1.00.08 (both which are on the Toshiba European Driver site) and 1.00.22SE, 6.05.01.TE (from a different site) and none of them are working.

After I install any of them I get this message from PowerSaver: "TOSHIBA Common Modules is not running correctly. You will not be able to use TOSHIBA Power Saver." A weird thing is that the Toshiba Common Modules driver _doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs_ and I can't find where to uninstall it. The way I installed the other versions is by simply running them.

My laptop is a Satellite L350 PSLD0C-03N08C ( art=8282#spectop).
The Canadian Toshiba website only has the Vista drivers (VAP). All the drivers on the European Toshiba site worked perfect.
*Please help me, this is the only part that is left for my downgrade.* I can't use Power Saver, Fn keys and all these important things if I don't get it fixed.

+P.S. For those who are interested in a history of my downgrade problems can be found here:

Answer:Common Modules diver doesn't work on Satellite L350 with Win XP

As you said this is a Canadian notebook model and if the Common Modules are not designed especially for this notebook then this application will not work properly.

So we have found a reason why the common modules doesn?t work -> this software was not designed for your notebook series.

Unfortunately, if the Toshiba Canadian page doesn?t provide the Win XP tools and utilities for you notebook then you have to wait and have to run the notebook without such tools.

I was using my laptop the other day and it froze for ages so i turned it off by holding the button down (it was all i could do).

I tried f8 and restoring from last previous known good config and also tried safe mode boot, none of these worked.

Does this mean I need to get someone to backup the data somehow and then rebuild it??
Is this expensive? Can i do it myself?

As I understand you, you want get access to data before trying to install the OS once again. Right?
Well, you could try to boot the notebook using Windows Live CD like WinPE or PartBE
Google for both.
You can create such Live CD which would allow you to boot the notebook without the new OS installation. Then you could get access to HDD and could move all the data to USB HDD or USB stick.

You could also remove the HDD from the notebook and could connect this to anther notebook using a USB HDD case.
Using another notebook you could move the data from the HDD which you have connected to USB port.

Answer:Boot Failure on Satellite L350

All new Toshiba notebooks, including your Satellite L350, are delivered without Toshiba recovery CD/DVD and this installations media must be created by notebook owner using "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator". It is small application designed by Toshiba and already preinstalled on notebook with ?factory settings?.

This recovery image cannot be downloaded.

So you didn?t create this reinstallations disc and now you cannot start your notebook properly.
What you can try is to install OS again using Toshiba recovery option.
Step-by-step guideline you can find under

Please install OS again using this guideline. If everything works well again please create recovery DVD. I recommend you to use DVD-R medias.

For me it looks like a hardware problem?
Did you check the AC adaptor? Is the power LED on?

Otherwise it might be a power supply electronic issue on the motherboard?

I have done this, even I restart or shutdown my computer keyboard works well.

But after some hours or a night, there is no response with my keyboard any more, and hardware manager can not find new hardware.

So every day I must delete the driver of Keyboard and restart -- F2 - BIOS - default setting ? save ? exit - restart, then I get my Keyboard back.

Can some one help me please?

I don't believe anyone here will be able to offer exact answer to your issue. Who knows what you have done and which software you have installed. It is known that some bas programmed third part software can have bad influence on OS stability and hardware functionality.

Maybe you should use your notebook with ?factory settings? and with tested software.

I have SATELLITE L350D-212 notebook with windows 7 home premium OA.
It started to complain that there was something wrong with the harddisk so I went and bought another harddisk of same size.

I have created the recovery disk when the computer was bought and have backup of all the data in external harddisk.

After I changed the new harddisk to the notebook and tried to boot from recovery disk nothing happens eventhoug I can see that there seems to be everything Ok with the disk.

Any ideas on how to get the recovery to run for the new harddisk?

I have the old harddisk attached as external disk via USB but can't boot from that too. It just stops at some point and says to shutdown.

Answer:Equium L350 - Vista fails to boot after recovery installation

Normally after the recovery installation your notebook should work properly again.

In my opinion it could be a hardware malfunction. Have you tested the HDD for defective sectors? You can do this with Drive Fitness Test:
Download the ISO image and burn it onto a disk. Then you can boot from it and test your HDD for errors.

I would also recommend checking the RAM for errors:
Memtest is good diagnostic tool for the RAM.

I hope I could help you a little bit. :)

Following Mark's suggestion in the shipping thread I thought I'd get this started here.  I noticed a couple of people talking about making recovery disks, and then someone else jumped in and said that a bootable disk and maybe a few others should have come with the machine.  Can someone clarify?  Were we supposed to get (for example) an XP boot/install CD with the machine, or not?  I got nothing with mine, but I have a whole bunch of extra stuff on the hard drive.Damien

Answer:Recovery disks, boot disks etc

Generally no recovery cds/dvds are included in the box. It would appear that sometimes there have been XP recovery sets included with some Vista TPs, but this is not the "rule". Sets can be ordered from Lenovo and may be liable to cost something. It is up to the user to create his/her own recovery set using the tool provided in -Start - Programs - Think Vantage - Create Recovery Media. Be sure to create a set, lower part of the window, and not just a boot cd, upper part of the window.

I have recently (yesterday) downloaded the latest bios update dated 25/02/10 version 2.20-WIN, after downloading and running the software the laptop immediately stopped working and shut down. I am now no longer able to boot the laptop at all, all I get is the power light on and the hard drive light blinks, I can hear the CD/DVD drive spinning, but thats it no screen nothing at all, I don't think it is booting.

Is there a way to correct this without taking it to a shop/engineer, recovering the BIOS??

The Laptop is a Satellite L350, I have opened the laptop to try and reset the CMOS by removing the motherboard battery (not sure if this would have helped), however as far as I can tell it doesn't have one or I can't find it.

Well, for the first time in 8 years I had to do a system recovery using the disks i created when i first bought my l300-13s using the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.

When you open Toshiba recovery media creator you can see options which media can be created. I?m not 100% sure but I think on old L300 there was option for recovery DVDs only so I think you cannot create recovery USB.

All I want to do is restore my Laptop to it's factory settings.

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Can't Get Recovery Disks To Work

Are you sure you are using the right disk?
Usually the old recovery procedure supports two modes; standard and expert mode.

But first of all you have to boot from the right disk;
Maybe you should try firstly with the second disk if the first disk does not start the recovery procedure? check it out.

If you want to boot from CD/DVD drive then press F12 button immediately after notebook ahs been powered up. Then you could choose the ODD from boot menu.
The CD should be inserted and then the procedure should star up!

I have an HP Pavilion that needed to be re-imaged and I ordered the recovery disks from HP.  However, when you start the computer with the recovery disks that I confirmed were the correct ones for this computer, a message comes up stating These recovery disks are not for the model of computer.   After a fruitless dialog with HP technical support, I was told that there was a problem with the computer when it was manufactured and there was a long process that I need to go through to get the disks to work, but they would not tell me the process because the computer was out of warranty.Anyone know what this process they are talking about might be?

Answer:HP Pavilion PC Recovery Disks will not work

Was motherboard ever replaced? You should have recovery partition on your HP.

My g50-45 windows partition got hosed.  I tried the onekey recovery to create installation disks but it goes into a loop and says it cannot create the recovery disks then tries to restart and do the same thing over and over. I've searched the lenovo site and forums but cannot find out how to get the recovery disks nor how or who to contact to get replacement .iso's .  My question is simple.. How to get a  windows 8.1 recovery disks for my laptop manufactured 10/14, purchased 11/14? Thanks,Richard

Answer:g50-45 recovery disks onekey does not work

Contact Lenovo Support directly (by phone) to purchase DVD recovery disks for your computer. As an alternative, install OS from retail purchased disk drive as "clean install" if recovery disks are not available. Also - you may want to run a drive fitness test to determine if it has hardware issues.Good luck.

Gateway M-6881
Anybody have any ideas...

a. The FACTORY recovery DVDs (2) that I have will not boot. Usually they just run until a window pops up to insert a blank CD, but you can do that forever--and it just cycles through repeatedly. A couple of times it did proceed to a second window indicating the restore was proceeding, but the bar did not advance, and after a minute or so, it too failed (sorry, don't remember the exact indications).

b. Trying to start recovery using the hidden partition... does not work either.
When you use Programs>Gateway>Gateway Recovery Management>Restore tab and command simply proceeds to a shutdown and reboots right back into Vista. Second way-- the manufacturer enter-recovery-during-boot process (Left Alt-F10 while "Gateway" is onsceen, also simply proceeds to boot thru into Vista.

Some things I have determined:
-A different bootable DVD will boot the machine, so DVD drive is working--at least READ.
-ASIDE: Using the internal utility at Programs>Gateway>Gateway Recovery Management to try to burn either a full recovery set (2 DVDs) or a "Drivers and Applications" set both fail--do not do it.
-File folder structure on the two factory recovery DVDs can be viewed
-chkdsk C: /r has been run and found a few seemingly insignificant things, which were 'fixed'
-The F8 menu does NOT contain "Repair your computer' entry.

Quite frustrated to have three ways to do it and none works.

Answer:Neither recovery partition nor disks work

Repair computer option is on a retail disc not the F8 menu

Does anyone know where I can download or order the recovery disks for my M70, the place i took it to get it fixed said it cant be fixed without them.

Answer:Satellite M70: Where to order the Recovery Disks?

Hello Luke

Is your M70 not delivered with recovery DVD? As far as I know it is definitely delivered with recovery DVD and please asks your local dealer about that.

The recovery image can not be downloaded just ordered by Authorized Toshiba service partner in your country.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A300- 1EG.

I created 2 recovey disks as required in the "Toshiba Recovey Disk Creator". I created the first one (Disk 1) 2 weeks ago and the second one (Disk 2) today because I didn't have 2 DVDs in hand.

My first question is does it matter if I have left a period of time between the two creations will if affect the recovery if I ever need to use them?

My second question is do both recovery disks just recover the operating system eg: Windows Vista or do they recover everything that was saved on Local Disk C at the time they were created?

My final question is if it happens my operating system dies, do I just power on the laptop and put in recovey disk 1 and then 2, (if that is not how I do it can someone please tell me how to?)

Answer:Satellite A300-1EG - Why do I need 2 recovery disks?

When you use ?Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator? you can see there option for using different empty medias. On some notebook the image can be burned on one empty DVD and on some models you need two of them. It depends on recovery image.

For my Satellite A300 I used two DVD-R medias. I have created recovery images for several notebooks and it is not known to me you have interrupt recovery creation and continue it later. When the first media is finished you must put second empty media and burning procedure will continue automatically. As far as I know there is NO option for disc 2 creation only. Please be careful about that.

I recommend you to obtain two empty DVD-R medias and create recovery DVDs at once.

When you use recovery DVD the whole HDD will be deleted, not just partition C. that means all data saved on HDD will be deleted. If your notebook has two HDD the recovery procedure will affect HDD1 only. Be careful about that and before you start recovery procedure back up all your important data.

Final answer to final question ;) ? when you want to install OS again using recovery media do follow:
Power your notebook ON and press F12 to enter boot options
Put recovery media 1 into optical disc drive
In boot options choose CD/DVD drive and press ENTER
Follow the menu on the screen

Of course, start with DVD1 and when asked insert second DVD.

We have a Satellite Pro L10-135: Intel with Windows XP.

The laptop is a few years old and is full of spyware, my partner has also accidently deleted some program files. I have removed all personal files and would like to completely reformat the unit to factory condition.

But she has lost the recovery CDs. I have tried to get them from Toshiba, but when I enter the serial number it says that its too old and the disc is unavailable. I've also tried to find the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator, but on the start menu, it is nowhere to be found instead it says Start>All Programmes>Toshiba>Networking or Start>All Programmes>Toshiba>Utilities.

I need the process to be idiot-proof as I am not too confident with computers, so I would like to get a genuine Toshiba restoration, rather than attemting to download individual drivers, etc.

Does anyone know where I could buy or download the disc in the UK?

Many thanks.

Answer:Satellite Pro L10-135 no recovery disks, need to restore

It is always problematic with old notebook models but what you can try is to contact nearest authorized Toshiba service provider in your country and ask for help.
Maybe they have somewhere archived old recovery discs and can help you with this.

One more thing: very often I saw that people offer recovery discs on eBay.
Check it out. Maybe you will be lucky and find recovery disc for your notebook model there.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C50-A-19T laptop with OS windows 8.1

Recently my laptop had booting problems so i contacted toshiba support and they told me to get recovery disk from and i ordered the disk and it arrived today#

When i enter the recovery disk and boot from the disk drive (ODD) it brings the windows logo then after a minute it goes to a blank screen and i waited and after a while it was still a blank screen
I had already went into the BIOS to change the settings to boot from the CD but even after that the same problem persists

Please help

Answer:Satellite C50-A-19T - recovery disks not working

Go to BIOS and disable the option called: secure boot
Now you should be able to boot from the ODD.

By the way: please check if the HDD is listed on the first BIOS page (name, size, etc?)
In case the HDD details are not visible, the HDD isn?t recognized by BIOS? this could be related to HDD malfunction.

Hi, I seem to be getting mixed messages from Toshiba about the availability of Recovery disks for my laptop. Are there any UK readers of this message board that would either sell me a spare copy they have that they no longer need or, do a copy for me of their recovery CD (and ideally the tools & utility CD) for this laptop? I would pay of course.

Answer:Satellite Pro 4340: Need Recovery Disks

The fact is that you will get all Toshiba CD from the service partner in your country.
You can order the Recovery CD and all another CDs.
I'm sure it's not very expensive.

Check this link:
There you will find the ASP in your country.

Hello all you fine helpers of the world,   My daughter dropped her Y510 and when she went to do the recovery after finally receiving the recovery, driver and facial recon. software she can't get passed BIOS I had thought that she had reached the safe mode but she can't get passed there either it asks what she wants to do, like change the language or go to the last good config or command prompt but she can't get to any of these options! I think because the last time Lenovo was in her computer and because it lost the boot sector and they changed the size of her drives I kinda get the feeling that the recovery partition is now gone and even with the recovery disk there isn't anywhere to boot to. Has anyone else out there with a Y510 had this problem cause she really needs to get the current files off of her lap top as she is in University and has two address's and hasn't had her external drive around during her practicum so she hasn't done a back up since last November, so not much help there not to mention its a low end external drive so there is no recovery on it if it was able to back up a Vista Operating system. If the boot sector is gone and the recovery partition is gone where do I go from here keeping in mind that we want to rescue her files before most likely having to reinstall Vista Home Premium. My daughter is shipping it back to Dad tomorrow so any help you fellow Lenovo fans out there can give me would be greatly appreciated. Answer:What to do when recovery disks don't work after resizing the drives?

if you make any changes on volumes, one key recover will stop working, and it already's the best way to restore your harddisk to default ( factory ) by time, don't make any changes on your volume, burn factory backup dvd immediately, try to use one key recover to fix system issues, and if you have to make clean install, backup your datas to dvd or external hdd or usb.( you can also use d: volume for personal documents )

My friend asked me to help her sell her HP Pavillion 15.  I created Recovery disks using the laptop's recovery disk creator tool.  I blanked the drive with our DoD eraser software. I ran the Recovery Disks.  The disks say they are not authorized for this computer.  I don't understand how that's possible. I created the disks on the same computer I'm trying to use them on.

Answer:Recovery Disks Created on HP Pavilion Do NOT Work on SAME PC

Hi, "I blanked the drive with our DoD eraser software." is the main problem, no available signature now. I always use the Recovery set over the top. I know why you have to erase the HDD. My suggestion: Pull it out, mount to a different computer, initiate it and make it like a new HDD then reinstall it back. Regards.

Hi, I have the original vista recovery installation disks that were created when you purchase the computer. They always worked fine. Windows 7 was installed on it and worked fine. I had to replace the motherboard in this and the wireless doesn't work on the replaced board. I do recall previously to installing windows 7 that when I installed xp I had to install a utility to get the wireless to work. When I installed vista again I had to do the same thing. After installing the motherboard and trying everything possible out there to work the wireless still doesn't work and the utilities that are available don't work with windows 7, I tried to put it the recovery disks to just start the computer all over again from vista, because the utility for the wireless is in that installation, however now when I put the recovery disks in it's telling me that they aren't for this computer. Is there something I have to do in windows 7 to get it to install these disks? Thanks

I have recently purchase a new Western Digital Hard Drive and was wondering if I can use my recovery disks i made on my old drive for this new drive so it would run normally as my old drive did before?

View Solution.

Answer:Will recovery disks work on my new hard drive

Not quite, what you have to do is open the DVD/CD drawer while the laptop is on, leave the drawer open and shut down. Insert your first recovery DVD and close the drawer.Upon boot up look for a message at the lower bottom left of the screen that says "Press the esc key for start up options" do this and you will have a number of choices. Navigate to f9 and press enter. Choose to boot from internal DVD/CD ROM Drive and push enter. That will now boot into your first recovery DVD. It will automatically eject when finished and ask for the other two.  You could also simply start tapping the f9 key upon boot up, this will also get you to the correct window.

If I download Service Pack 3 will my System Recovery Disks still work. I downloaded service pack 3 when it first came out.

When I run SFC /SCANNOW in "RUN" it scans but then a window pops up asking me to insert my Windows Professional XP Service Pack 3cd. When I insert my System Recovery Disc #3 it say I've inserted the wrong disc.

Is it because originally my Windows came with service pack 2? Isn't it the System Recovery Disc that it's asking for or another disc?

Hi all.Yes, it may seem obvious, but I gotta give you the background to it first, to make sure all bases are covered:My mums e-machines pc got hit by a surge (despite having a protector), and it blew out the board and the PSU. She had it repaired at a local shop, and has recently decided she wanted a new install doing, with all her stuff backing up in the mean time. The thing is, because its not an e-machines motherboard, the recovery disks dont work. I have tried several times, and each time I get a blue screen flashing up before the damned thing reboots itself, and goes into the 'Safe Mode' menu.Ive sent a mail to both the shop and to e-machines to see what they suggest. Technically, she has a license to run XP, but the repair done is stopping her from being able to reload it... so should the shop supply a copy of XP, or re-install it under good faith???!Has anyone got any suggestions? Although I'm holding all her data files, the HDD on her machine is blank at the moment, and I really don't know what to do next!

Answer:Recovery disks dont work after repair!

Borrow an XP disk that matches the operating system of e-machine. e.g. windows XP home.Run a fresh install and input your mums microsoft 25 digit code.If the original installation was an OEM disk, you will need to re- activate anyway, tell them that the old motherboard blew in a power surge. They should re-activate windows, if it works.

I've just started a new Sat L350 up and i can't get past the second page which says; media test failure and no bootable device, insert boot disc and press any key.

I've got no disc and i'm stuck,

Answer:Re: Satellite L350: media test failure - no bootable device, insert boot disc

This error message appears because the BIOS didn?t not find an bootable device which would contain an operating system.

How about the HDD? Is it recognized by BIOS?
Check this in BIOS settings; press ESC and F1 in order to access the BIOS.
There you should check if the HDD (all HDD details should be listed) is recognized.
If not, then this means that your HDD died and therefore you cannot boot from the HDD.

Dear All

I wish to find out how many recovery disks my L300-1AQ (Model No PSLB8E) laptop requires.

I have a disk that I made when I bought the computer but I cannot start using it untill I make sure that only one disk is required (if more than one disk is required and I start the recovery process I believe I will render the computer unusable). I know that recent Toshibas come with multiple DVDs so it's definitely worth my checking before I do anything.

Oh and the recovery partition is gone due to an "aggressive" installation of linux, so that's not an option for us (it's new user is a windows user).

I cannot find this information on the internet or in the manual so I would be grateful if anyone out there has this information.

Best wishes to all

Answer:Satellite L300-1AQ - How many recovery disks required?

Hi DiodePrridge51b,

If Toshiba recovery disk creator required 1 disk only, you need only 1 recovery disk to restore factory settings.

It?s always depending on the notebook model and OS how much disks you need but if only 1 disk was required it?s enough and you start recovery installation. :)
