Satellite L10-194 cannot run after recovery

Question: Satellite L10-194 cannot run after recovery

Hi! I've used my Satellite L10-194 for few years, and it started to be really slow, so i decided to reinstall (recover) system to make it cleaner and faster.
I found my L10 DVD-ROM Product Recovery, but when i completed the recovery the system wouldn't start. I've tried the recovery for a few times and it doesn't help. Every time i try to start the computer, when it goes to load the system it just turns off (i think there flashes something like bluescreen for a second).

I've checked the HDD and image file in the advanced mode, and it's okay. But when i do HDD -> from Image in advance mode, after completing it there is a moment when i have acces to command line. After getting "C: dir" I dont see a Windows directory (?), when restarting the computer system doesn't work as usual. Am I doing something wrong?

I tried another Product Recovery CD from second Toshiba laptop that i have, and it works, it installs Windows but without drivers and things (it's from completely different model of Toshiba). What should I do? I'm not sure if using system preinstalled for different model is the right idea (and legal?)

I had some problems with my L10 before, and I had to change the mainboard. In service they said that they cannot find a mainboard identical like that in my L10, so they used some different model. Maybe that is the problem why the recovery doesn't work?

Sorry for my english, please correct me in my mistakes, to help me improve the language :)

Preferred Solution: Satellite L10-194 cannot run after recovery

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think this is the reason why your notebook does not start after recovery procedure.
Seems the drivers which are a part of the image are not compatible with the new motherboard.
Possibly the chipset driver or graphic card driver make some troubles and the Windows crashes before booting up?
Maybe you could star the windows in ?safe mode?. Press F8 immediately after pressing power button. Then chose safe mode.
In safe mode uninstall the chipset driver and graphic driver and then try to boot again.

If this will not help, then install the Windows using an clean Microsoft CD.
The drivers should be placed on the Toshiba European driver page.

I have a Satellite U400 (few years old), and I never created the recovery DVD.
Now I want to do it, but for some reasons, when I launch Toshiba recovery disc creator, nothing happens...
The partition with the recovery files is there, as well as the folder HDDRecovery. I did add some files to this partition, could this be the problem ?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Satellite U400 Impossible to create recovery DVD with Recovery disc creator

>I did add some files to this partition, could this be the problem ?
No. if you didn?t change partitions structure this should not be the problem.

Question is: does Toshiba recovery disc creator start or not? If you cannot star this tool it has nothing to do with recovery files.
Can you find this file - C:\Program Files\Toshiba\TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator\TRORDCLauncher.exe ?

I recently bought a Satellite Pro L850-1UJ with Windows 8

I've created a new partition (so i could use it as data room)
i.e. C: the windows system AND Z: my data

after that, i could NOT use the RECOVERY MEDIA CREATOR to create the recovery dvds
BUT the partition still exists and i can see the inside files from windows

IS IT a way to extract the files from the recovery partition or any other clue how i could fix the partition scheme so the RECOVERY MEDIA CREATOR could recognize it

Many thanks for your time...

Answer:Satellite Pro L850-1UJ: How create recovery DVDs from recovery partition

After changing HDD partitions structure it happens that ?Toshiba recovery media creator? cannot find recovery files. These files are marked with special markers that in your case cannot be found anymore.

I?m afraid now is too late to do or change anything. You are not the first one with this problem. We always write here that first step should be recovery media creation and later you can do whatever you want. You can even delete it.

Now you can just order new recovery disc at

Talk about confusing. Does anyone know how to get a Toshiba C660 working after the HDD has failed and the owner has stupidly NOT followed the instructions to make a recovery disk. Will the recovery disk ( if you purchase one from Toshiba ) rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition and install windows 7 (original OS ) and accept the product key printed on the Windows License attached to the base of the laptop. I have read a number of suggestions but these have been deemed incorrect by others.

Surely Toshiba must have a way of sorting this problem.

Do they read these posts ?

Answer:Satellite L660-12Q - Would recovery disk rebuild the new HDD along with a new recovery partition

Hi buddy?

I don?t think that this is really complicated? I could find all info regarding the recovery procedure in the user manual?

The recovery disk has to be created at the first day of purchase? its recommended to create one in cases something would be wrong with the HDD.

The recovery disk contain an image?. Image is a package containing Win system, drivers, tools and all the stuff preinstalled on the notebook.
You purchased the notebook and the system was already activated so you don?t need the key placed at the bottom of the unit.
Furthermore the usage of recovery disk formats the whole HDD (partitions too) and set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.

There is also another option to recover the notebook called HDD recovery. This HDD recovery does not need recovery disk. Usage of HDD recovery would format ONLY the C (system) partition.

I just purchased a brand new laptop and have realised that it didn't come with a recovery disc or a recovery partition on the hard drive.

Just wondering if my hard disc crashes how am i supposed to reinstall windows?
The laptop i bought is a Toshiba satellite L500 and is only a few weeks old.

If anyone could help on the subject would be very much appreciated.

Answer:Satellite L500 - No recovery disc or recovery partition - How to reinstall?

Normally if I buy a new notebook or other product I read the user manual firstly. So I would recommend that you should the same before you ask different questions.

The point is that you have to create a Toshiba recovery disk yourself. Therefore start the recovery disk creator that is preinstalled on your notebook and follow the screen instructions. I recommend a high quality DVD-R medium to create this disk.

Furthermore you can reinstall Windows using the HDD recovery option. On the second partition you can find this folder that contains an image of factory settings and you can start this feature if you go in advanced boot menu and select ?repair my computer?. This is not a special partition, only a folder where the image is stored.

HDD recovery procedure is the same as Toshiba recovery disk. You get back factory settings too but the recovery disk wipes the whole HDD. The HDD recovery only the first partition.

By the way: Normally you did get this message:

+your system is equipped with hard disk recovery system. if you need to repair+

Bad memory can cause Recovery problems.

Go to and download Memtest. Its a bootable Floppy disk or CD that will test the memory for errors.

Hello, I've used the recovery media creator to create a USB flash drive recovery media.

If i then use that to restore the Windows 7 installation onto a new hard drive (as SSD) will that drive itself have the recovery media partition on it?

So if I then lose the USB stick could I restore again by holding down zero when powering on?

Or does it recover the Windows partition and nothing more?

My two-year old Satellite C75-A-14X suffered a major hard drive crash a few weeks ago. My data has been backed up, but I've been unable to repair my PC, and as I hadn't created any recovery media, I bought a system recovery USB stick from Toshiba. I received the USB stick today and attempted to restore my laptop to its factory default settings. I left my laptop to perform the recovery for about an hour or so. When I returned, the screen said that there was an error (I didn't make a note of the error code) and the recovery had failed. Now, when I restart my laptop I get a blue screen with the following text:

Your PC needs to be repaired

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.

Error code: 0xc000000f

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again
Press F8 for Startup Settings
Press Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings"

When I press Enter or F8, my laptop remains on the blue screen with the above text. Pressing Esc is the only option at this screen that works. How can I re-attempt restoring factory settings from the recovery USB stick?

Hi all

I have a customers Sat M40-197 which was badly messed up with malware so I did a full recovery using the supplied disc which has the product number PMR400490EN0. After restart the system just hangs in normal mode, and on safe mode I notice that the last line logged is Mup.sys but even in that mode the system still doesn't start. I've tried using Ghost in advanced mode not resizing the partition but no matter what I try I can't get it to start.

Before I take what I think is my only option of using a standard OEM XP Home disc and installing using the supplied product key I was wondering if anyone had any solutions to this?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite M40: Recovery procedure hangs on restart after using recovery CD

sounds first like some Recovery CD error. I mean it?s possible that the CD is physically damaged or whatever and then some data may be corrupted.

If not then I would assume the following reasons:

- HDD is not properly formatted -> reformat it completely and create one BIG partition
- HDD is faulty -> check the HDD with some special HDD tool from the manufacturer (in most cases you can download it from the manufacturers website)
You can also download "UBCD4WIN" (just google for it) and check your HDD with the integrated tools
- The memory could be faulty -> use the "UBCD4WIN" and check the memory with "PI" or "SuperPI"

Thats it..

The Recovery disk was not provided with the notebook because there was a tool called Toshiba Recovery disk Creator which allows you to create a recovery disk!
Please check if you can create a recovery disk using this tool!

If this is not possible, then you can check if the HDD recovery is available.

I have SATELLITE L350D-212 notebook with windows 7 home premium OA.
It started to complain that there was something wrong with the harddisk so I went and bought another harddisk of same size.

I have created the recovery disk when the computer was bought and have backup of all the data in external harddisk.

After I changed the new harddisk to the notebook and tried to boot from recovery disk nothing happens eventhoug I can see that there seems to be everything Ok with the disk.

Any ideas on how to get the recovery to run for the new harddisk?

I have the old harddisk attached as external disk via USB but can't boot from that too. It just stops at some point and says to shutdown.

Answer:Satellite L350D-21 Problems using recovery disks to recovery to new HDD

Usually the recovery disk should format the new HDD but I would recommend to attach the new HDD as an external device to another computer and to format this new HDD before trying to recover the notebook.

After the HDD has been formatted, connect it to the L350D and boot from the recover disk?

Good luck

D: Programs
E: Data& Downloads

>will I be able to use the "Expert Recovery Mode" of the Recovery CD to reinstall the Win XP Pro (factory pre-installed software) onto my C: partition, whilst not affecting the D, E & F partitions

Yes, this should be possible. Using the Expert Recovery Mode you should get the Ghost window in which you could select the partition where the OS should be installed. In such case only this partition would be formatted.

> will I be able to format the C: partition, using the "Expert Recovery Mode", without formatting the other partitions?

Yes, theoretically this should be possible.

> what is the exact "Expert Recovery Mode" procedure ?
As I mentioned above, this mode allows you to restore the OS on a certain partition and only this partition will be formatted.

Answer:Can I use the Satellite A215 recovery disk for Satellite L305-s5921

You can not use the Recovery disk designed for A215 because the A215 is simply different notebook model which need different drivers as the L305!

The image on the recovery disk contains the OS, drivers and tools and if you would use different recovery disk then wrong drivers would be installed on the L305 and this can lead to other troubles!!!

Well, for the first time in 8 years I had to do a system recovery using the disks i created when i first bought my l300-13s using the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.
I had inadvertantly deleted the HDD Recovery partition when i set out to do a clone using a bigger HDD.

What I want to find out is instead of making recovery disks to DVD can i make a recovery USB flash drive?

When you open Toshiba recovery media creator you can see options which media can be created. I?m not 100% sure but I think on old L300 there was option for recovery DVDs only so I think you cannot create recovery USB.

Hi all,

here is my GOAL: I want to reinstall the original Windows Vista as it was when we bought that laptop.

My PROBLEM: we never succeeded to create that recovery DVDs (just after the purchase), always gave an error... today and to my surprise, I cannot find any recovery tool from the OS either...

Trickier situation now, isn't it?

I lost the product recovery disk for my P100, but I do have the disks for a P30 and P300, both of which are windows XP.

My P100 which my husband uses has become so slow that I feel I have to reload it. But when I tried starting up holding 0, F8 and F12 (one of them gave me a menu, I forget which), I couldn't find an option which allowed it to return to factory settings.

So I wonder if I can use one of the other product recovery disks on the P100? Would really appreciate advice. (I used to own a P30, and I still own a P300)

Answer:Can I use product recovery for Satellite P300 on Satellite P100?

Every single recovery image is designed for certain notebook model. Why?
Every notebook model has specific hardware infrastructure and also specific drivers are needed.

When you compare two different notebooks there are different CPUs, graphic card, modem, cam maybe and so on. So if you want to have properly working OS this will not work.

Well, the other day, my L45 froze up, so I restarted it - to find that an OS file was missing.

So I tried the system restore, and it ran until the end where it said it had a problem and closed.
Then I tried the recovery discs. It ran all of disc 1, moved on to disc 2, started restoring, and then stopped at 17% restored.
I tried the discs several more times and it always stops at 17% and gives me "ERROR : 10-FC12-045D" - "Recovery error".

I have looked everywhere for what this error is specific to, but have gotten no results.

Answer:Satellite L45 Recovery stops at 17% - ERROR: 10-FC12-045D - Recovery error

I really do not believe you can find explanation for this error because Toshiba use RECO software for OS installation. My experience says that in such case there are two possibilities: either is recovery CD/DVD defective or the HDD make some problems.

I recommend you to obtain original Microsoft installations CD and try to install clean Windows to see if the installations procedure ends properly. If not maybe is really HDD defective and after 17% there is some defective sector.

Check it out. Anyway I recommend you to contact authorized service provider in your country. They can say for sure what is wrong there.

I own a Toshiba Satellite Pro L20 with Windows XP.
I did not make a recovery CD for it and there is no partition separately to install the system from it.

So now even if I own a license number, I can?t reinstall my system. I called the company that has the exclusive rights for Toshiba in my country and they say that they don?t have that recovery CD anymore (my lap is about 3 years old - so it?s not that old right?) and that?s their final word on this situation.

Can anyone please tell me where can I get this recovery CD? Can I buy it from anywhere?

Thank you,

Answer:Need recovery CD for my Satellite Pro L20

Hello Mihai

As far as I know Satellite Pro L20 is delivered with recovery CD and there is no option for creation as on new notebook models. This option doesn?t exist.
As you wrote this is older notebook model and I can imagine this company doesn?t have recovery medias for this notebook model.

Toshiba recovery medias can be ordered under but I am not sure you will be able to order it for this older notebook model but you can check it.
If you will not be able to order original Toshiba recovery media you can install WXP using Microsoft installations CD. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba support page.

One more thing: number on the bottom side is for recovery image and cannot be used with every WXP installations CD.

If you need more help with WXp installation let us know.

I found a new Toshiba page.

It?s a Toshiba Europe Backup Media Online Shop and you should be able to order your Recovery CD on this page.

_Regarding your FN button issue:_
If you use Win XP on your notebook you would need to install the Hotkey Utilities for Display Devices and Hotkey Utility to get the FN buttons working.

One thing is very important; if you install your OS manually please ensure that you would install the Toshiba drivers and utilities in the right order. On the Toshiba driver page you can find the installation instruction txt file and there you would find the mentioned insall order. Follow this while driver installation procedure!

Toshiba (and as far as I know some other notebook manufacturers) do not provide any recovery disk in the package.
Mostly you can create such recovery disk yourself using the preinstalled software called Toshiba Recovery media creator. Should check your preinstalled programs.

So Toshiba Recovery media creator allows you to create the recovery disk ( 3 DVDs) or an Recovery flash memory stick (I guess you will need an 16GB USB stick)

Hi Jonathan

It?s not very serious problem if you have lost the Recovery CD. The Toshiba service partner in your country offers all compatible devices and parts, also the CDs.
You can order the CD from this service partner.

I made a mistake. I made partition modification on the SSD (drive c).
After this the recovery function does not work. But I see the hissen recovery partition. How can i copy this partition to USB drive as bootable disk?
I managed to copy this hidden partition with the partition program, but I can not boot from the USB. I hope there is a proper method to copy the recovery files as bootable.
Can you help me?

Answer:Satellite Z30-B-100 - No HDD recovery

I tried this method
but I dont know how to copy, because I dont know the drive letter of the hidden recovery partition.
Is is good to try this command ("XCOPY d:\*.* y:\ /e/s/f") as copy from drive c to usb?

My friend has an M70-396 and has no recovery disc and can't get to the recovery console or windows.

I've tried to order him the disc from the recovery media link on this site but it says that they don't have discs for models from 2007 or earlier.

I have a DVD from my own M50 which is a bit older but has the same O/S - I assume this wouldn't work?

If not, where can I get him one from? He didn't get one in the box or lost it so I don't know what to do except buy a Windows CD and do it from scratch but would prefer to do the Toshiba recovery if possible.

Any help much appreciated!

Answer:Where can I get a recovery DVD for Satellite M70?

I can just imagine authorized service provider in your country has one in the archive and can give you for OS installation. If not it is not the end of the world.
For OS installation you can use Microsoft WXP installation disc. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can download from Toshiba support page under > Support & Downloads.

Good luck.

Can somebody tell me where I can purchase a recovery CD for my Satellite A50-522?

Answer:Where to get Recovery CD for Satellite A50-522?

Hi friend,

You can get a recovery CD by contacting the nearest ASP in your country. They can serve you with recovery media for your machine.

Here?s a little guide how to find the nearest available ASP in your country:
Go to the Toshiba Europe Mainpage and click on "Support & Downloads" -> "Support Homepage" -> "Repairs & Servicing" -> "Find an Authorized Service Provider"

Find the ASP which is next to you, contact them and you will get your recovery for your Satellite.

I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite M40 using XP Home
My anti virus picked a virus and delt with it.

It told me to restart, which I did. When it started up it displayed winlogin.exe couldn't start because it is missing shell32.dll
I clicked OK and it showed lsass.exe couldn't load up because it is missing shell32.dll
I clicked OK and a message showed User interface failure login user interface dll. Msglna.dll failed to load. replace or restore original dll.

I restart and it takes me back to winlogin.exe message.
Normaly i would download these files and install them but i cant get the computer on at all.
I can't get safe mode or safe mode with prompt and last known configuration didn't work.

I do have a Toshiba restore disk but I don't want to do a full reformat and the other option on the disk says only use this if you know what you
are doing with the files - and I don't.

I did look at the options it had but it just didn't make sence and didn't want to make my situation worse.

I hope someone can help.

Many thanks sally

Answer:Satellite M40 - how do use the recovery cd

It sounds like that you have a strange virus on your notebook?

But I don?t know why you don?t want to do a full reformat of the notebook. The point is that the Toshiba recovery disk contains an image of the factory settings. That means you can?t restore only some single files and you have to do a complete reinstallation of the OS. To be honest I think this is in any case the best solution because I think the virus can only be deleted if you format the HDD using Toshiba recovery disk.
To use the recovery disk you must only boot from it and follow the screen instructions. It?s easy to use and takes only few minutes.

If you want to backup some files before you start to reinstall Windows you can put the HDD in an external HDD case. Then you can backup your data from another computer. I did this and I had success with this and maybe you too. It?s worth a try.

And let me give you a word of advice. After you have reinstalled Windows use a good antivirus program and keep it up to date. I have good experience AntiVir (Freeware) and Kaspersky. Furthermore enable the Windows firewall or you use another firewall. Don?t forget to install the newest Service Pack for your OS and enable automatic Windows update function. So you can get all updates timely.

I hope I could help you and now you understand the case better.

Hi there,

My Satellite A30-303 needs to be recovered as XP is constantly hanging and crashing, and I would also like to be able to create a partition with a linux distro onto it, but the problem is that the DVD-RAM drive no longer works, and I have been using an external DVD-RAM drive for some time now (the LG GSA-2166D) to read and write my CDs, but I can't get the laptop to boot from this device as it is USB. Is there a way of booting from this device or is there another workaround?

Many thanks to anyone who can help me.

Answer:Recovery of my Satellite A30-303

Don?t waste the time and don?t try to boot from the external USB CD/DVD drive.
This is simply not possible!!!

The BIOS does not support a booting from the USB ODD. The BIOS supports the HDD, ODD, LAN and USB FDD as bootable devices but not USB CD/DVD drive.

You have no other choice as to buy a supported and compatible internal CD drive.

Of course you could try to boot from LAN but this is not very easy and you will need to setup an RIS server.

Answer:Need recovery CD for my Satellite L20

Everything can be ordered from the ASP in your country.
The Toshiba ASP (authorized service provider) provides can order every supported and compatible notebook part.
So make a call to the guys and order the Recovery CD. It should not be very expensive.

At the other way you could try to install the OS from the original Microsoft Windows CD. After the OS installation you could download and install all Toshiba drivers which can be found on the Toshiba driver page.

Hi all

I have lost my A30 recovery cd #1 of 2. I do have a win XP home CD which i have installed, however the product key from the bottom of my laptop doesn't work with this cd, is reported as invalid.

Is there anyway I can get hold of a cheap recovery cd? Or even better, get this XP disk to work correctly?

Answer:Satellite A30: need Recovery CD

Firstly you cannot use this key to activate any Windows OS.
The key which you have found at the bottom of the CD case you can use to activate the One Note program which was preinstalled on the Toshiba image!
The recovery CD you can order from the Toshiba service partner in your country.

PS: You don?t need to activate the OS from the recovery CD. It?s already activated.

I've been asked to recover a L20-182 from an agonal state after maybe 2 or more years of usage by my girlfriend and need to get the recovery data. What i mean is all the drivers and stuff I need to install after formatting the hdd and setting up the OS.

My computer has a recovery function that restores it to factory settings within minutes using data from a hidden partition. Is this possible with Toshiba L20-182?
If yes, how?
If not, where can I get all the data if the backup hasn't been made or was lost or used as a make-up stuff holder or whatever?

Thanks a lot in advance ;]

If you don't have it anymore, you could try and contact local ASP or order backup media directly by following this link:

Hi All,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A60-682 (PSA60E), and two weeks ago the HD crashed.
Unfortunately I lost the recovery CD and I cannot rebuild OS (Windows XP Home) and drivers.
I asked to Authorised Toshiba Service partner, but they said to me that the Recovery CD for my Satellite A60 is not more available.
There are only 2 solution:
a) purchase a new Windows XP CD with License from Microsoft and install drivers (downloading them from the Toshiba site)
b) get a copy of Recovery CD for Satellite A60 from other user that have this model of notebook.

Could anybody help me? Could anybody send to me a copy of these recovery CDs?

thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A60: Need a recovery CD

Hello Marfonta,

i can not believe that Toshiba can not offer a Recovery Disc for the Satellite A60. This model is i think at least 3 years old. Furthermore how can the Authorized Service Partner say, "buy a new Windows XP, a new License from Microsoft"??? You have a Win XP License (Sticker on the bottom of the Notebook).
I would recommend to ask another Authorized Service Partner from Toshiba (i guess he will have another answer).

We have several Toshiba laptops in use in our company. I need to restore one (a Satellite Pro L20) to factory settings. However, although I have kept all the recovery CDs, most of them have labels which don't mention which model they are meant to be used on. On some of them I wrote the model number on the label by hand, but I haven't done this for the L20. I know from experience that if I get the wrong recovery CD, I'll have to put the dozens of device drivers and utilities on individually, so finding the right one would save me a lot of time and stress.

Each recovery CD has a part number (e.g. GMR400626EN1), so it should be possible to identify the correct CD from this, but I can find no such info on Toshiba's web site.

Is there a list that matches Recovery CD part numbers to laptop models?

Answer:Which Recovery CD to use with Satellite Pro L20?

Such info is definitely not available on Toshiba support site. What you can try is to contact authorized service partner in your country. They have access to Toshiba data base and I am pretty sure they can help you.

If you need addresses and phone numbers please check ? Support & Downloads ? Find an Asp.

Bye and good luck!

I can't install XP Home using Toshiba recovery CD for my m70-168.
I did it two years ago but now it is impossible.

I followed instructions from user's manual. At the beginning, the system displays loaded modules followed by a menu from recovery utility
There is 3 options 1- Normal installation 2- personalized installation 9- quite. But it is impossible to select any of them.
Only Ctrl-Alt-Del works, then windows start normally. Since the last restoration, memory was upgrded to 2 Go.

I have the same problem using the saving copie of my recovery CD.

Thanks for your Help

Answer:Cannot use Recovery CD XP for Satellite M70-168

Hmm? sounds really strange? I mean if the copy of the recovery disk does not work too, then I doubt that this could be a recovery disk issue. But nothing is impossible?
Are you sure that your HDD is fully OK?

Did you try to install the Win XP using the Microsoft clean Windows XP CD?
Maybe you should check this to ensure that the issue is not related to the installation disks?.

Back to your recovery disk; As far as I know it?s not possible to order a new recovery disk because this notebook model is discontinued?
So you will need to use a Microsoft disk

To recovery your notebook you need the recovery disk that you have and the you must boot from the CD/DVD drive ? That?s all!

Therefore go in the boot menu if you press F12 immediately if you have powered on the notebook and select your disk drive.
The notebook tries to boot from CD/DVD drive and now follow the screen instructions.

I'm desperately looking for the recovery cd of my laptop. (unfortunately lost the original one)
Toshiba satellite A110-173 (bought in 2006)
OS: Windows XP
Language: Dutch

The website sent me to the support site Toshiba media online shop.
There I found an answer: For your device no recovery medium can be ordered, because it comes either not from the region of Toshiba Europe, or it is too old for this service.
Is it normal that for a four-years-old laptop there is no more support ?
As a loyal Toshiba customer I hope to find a solution this way.

Thanks for all feedback people !
Timo - Belgium

Answer:Need recovery CD for Satellite A110-173

Support in general is not just to offer original recovery disc. Support is also to offer replacement hardware components. Support is also to offer all important drivers for your notebook model.

This info you found doesn?t mean your notebook is not supported anymore. Problem is that Toshiba doesn?t offer recovery disc for old notebook models but it is not end of the world. For every supported operating system you can download all important drivers and Toshiba tools and utilities. So what you should do is to obtain original Microsoft WXP disc (Dutch) , install WXP and later install all necessary drivers.

It is not so problematic. Anyway if you need some help let us know and we can help you.

I have satellite A30 notebook. When I tried to do a recovery with the Toshiba recovery CD, it started to format my hard disk I think. But when the progress bar arrives at 15% my computer shuts down. No mater how many times I?ve tried it I does the same thing. Now I am blocked and can even enter to windows.
Can any one help?

Answer:Satellite A30 recovery stops after 15%

Hi Takis,

The most likely cause of this behaviour is a faulty hard drive. When the recovery process reaches the faulty area of the drive platters it will retry several times but will then shut down the notebook.

If you have access to any disk utilities (such as Norton Disk Doctor) you could try a surface scan of your hard drive to check for defective sectors.

Do you know what's a workaround for this?
And in last instance how to get a copy of the installation CDs.....

Answer:Satellite A10: I lost Recovery CD - How to get one?

The key which can be found on the bottom of the unit is only an OEM key.
This means that it works only with the OEM version which were preinstalled and delivered together with the notebook. Simply said, you cannot use this key with other Windows OS.

If you want to reinstall the OS from the original Windows CD then you have to use the key which belongs to this CD!

At the other hand you can order a new recovery CD from the ASP in your country.
Just contact the guys. They could help you to order it.

Hello all.

I have recently bought a second hand Satellite Notebook from a friend (slightly older Notebook- from 2004.) When booting into a virtual environment and running anti virus applications (for the memory) and diagnostic tools (Everest and Memtest etc), all hardware appears to be functional and in good order. The HDD was dead when originally bought, so I have replaced that with a new one (first replacement was faulty, but was written to initially in tests, while the second is still RAW and unused). When attempting to do an OS recovery/reinstall off the original OEM product CD (T#R-02163001 PMR400170EN1 2/2) nothing happens to begin the process (no BootCD in drive- this despite the boot order being set correctly.) The single file on the CD is a 02163001.GHS file (615,722KB) inside a TOSHIBA folder. This I would guess to be the second or more of spanned Ghost files. However the first part, which, I imagine, should be a .GHO file, for automatically starting the bootup/recovery process, is absent. Assuming the CD-ROM (definately not the optical drive) to be defective, I have attempted to purchase a replacement over the net and by phoning the local suppliers. This CD is apparently no longer available, anywhere!

Is the CD-ROM defective, based on the single file, its size and the possible missing .GHO file ?
Is it possible to still make use of the image of the .GHS file on the original product recovery CD and incorporate it to recover the machine with a new CD with... Read more

Answer:Satellite A60 and Windows XP Recovery

You might find that you are missing the first of two recovery CD's . You will probably battle to get a replacement Product Recovery CD, as the laptop is about four years old. You could try your local ASP's or alternatively install an original generic (non OEM) Windows XP Home/ Pro CD.

Maybe other users could confirm this???

Satellite M30 is pretty old notebook model and I can imagine that authorized service partner can not order original CDs anymore.

It will be much better to buy Microsoft WXP installations CD (on eBay it is not expensive anymore) and you can install WXP on your own. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can find on Toshiba support page.

Is it possible to perform recovery of factory default software or recovery to out-of-box state for my laptop ? Satellite P300-1GQ?

I?ve used Toshiba HDD Recovery Tool and it only formatted the C partition leaving the partition D unchanged. Vista is running smoothly, all data on D partition are available. I could just format the partition D but the catch is that the folder titled ?HDD recovery? is stored on D partition. Back in 2009 when I purchased my laptop I created the HDD Recovery DVD?s as instructed. I could use them and format the entire hard disk but the information I got from the support technician in my country told me that the new ?HDD recovery? folder would not be created.

I just want to wipe the entire drive and perform fresh installation, having again ?HDD recovery? folder on D partition of the disk, in short: as it is now. Is this possible or not?

Answer:HDD Recovery - Satellite P300-1GQ

> Is it possible to perform recovery of factory default software or recovery to out-of-box state for my laptop ? Satellite P300-1GQ?

It is possible:
Either by doing a HDD recovery or using Recovery disk

As far as I know using Recovery disk the whole HDD would be formatted and would be set back to the same state like at the first day of purchase? this would mean that HDD recovery folder and HDD recovery option should be available even if using the Recovery disk!

Firstly, I'd like to say I'm quite useless with computers.

I used the Product Recovery CD, followed all the steps, it took like 30minutes. And then it was done. After it finished there were a number of problems that have appeared:

Windows isn't genuine?
Network adapter won't find any internets? Need to install a driver?
Screen resolution doesn't give the option for the correct one.
It's a stranger version of windows 7, the bits where windows is concernig are all coloured and aren't translucent. - But I'm not sure if this has to do with 32-bit and 64-bit whatever they are.
^ I have figured that I now have 32bit downloaded onto that computer, when it is actually a 64bit.

I posted on the US forums and have realised that I've used the wrong CD, the CD I used was a recovery for an L500-19X.

Not sure if I'm using the correct disk, as I own 2 toshiba laptops.
On the disk it says GMR410014EN0
Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit
Support for these products provided by Toshiba Europe GmbH

Just a little more information.. I'm not sure if I created this 'recovery medium' just noticed it the 2nd time, will this have any affect at all on the outcome?

Answer:Recovery for Satellite L755-17Q

> Just a little more information.. I'm not sure if I created this 'recovery medium'
What to say after reading this?
So let?s be clear now: according notebook specification your Satellite L755-17Q was delivered with preinstalled WIN7 64BIT HOME PREMIUM and without recovery disc. Recovery disc must be created by notebook owner. If you don?t have it and you want to install original recovery image for L755-17Q you must order it on

If you have European notebook model why do you discuss about it on US forum? European models don?t have anything to do with US models, US market or US support.

What do you want to do exactly now? Please be clear with your answer and we will try to help.

I don't know for sure (since i don't have the recovery cd either), but shouldn't you be able to start from scratch ?
That is: Format drive and so on ?

If not:
If i'm correct you should have a serial of the OS on the bottom of the laptop.
Try to get a Windows setup-cd of win98 or win2000 (whichever applies in your case), and setup.
Download all drivers from toshiba support for your OS and install them.
Note that you should FIRST INSTALL Intel Chipset, SECOND INSTALL Common Modules, then the rest.

Good luck and let us know if you succeeded !

If you need a Recovery disk then you would have to ask your ASP in your country for such disk.

In very rare cases you will be not able to order a Recovery disk if the notebook series is too old. In such case you will have to install the Windows OS using the Microsoft disk and then you could download and reinstall the Toshiba driver which you could find on the Toshiba European page.

I recently had my A100-289 shipped in for repair. Few days later the unit came back to me with a new motherboard.
Unfortunately my OS did not start up any more, so I recovered it from the DVD.

Upon completion of the recovery process, Windows MCE prompted with the "Found New Hardware"-Wizard, that wanted to install a driver for the DVD drive. Usually you don't need drivers for these, do you?

After unsuccessfully searching the net for several hours, I tried to recover once again, so maybe the problem would disappear all by itself, but this was unfortunately not the case, not even after the third recovery.

I tried installing from a clean install disc I was using on my desktop PC before, just to see if it works and uninstall it afterwards. What can I say? It did not work anyway :(
I am writing this from said notebook on which I have Mandriva Linux 2008 installed as secondary OS. The DVD-Drive does work flawlessly here.

I conclude this must be a software issue, that has to do with Windows Maybe there is a way to solve it, but I did not get a working solution yet, though I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both driver and drive several times without any success.

Any ideas?

Answer:No DVD-ROM after Recovery - Satellite A100-289

First of all if you are able to install any of the OS then the CD/DVD drive works and surely it?s not a hardware issue.
So after the installation of the recovery CD you should check the device manger if there are any yellow exclamation marks.
Then you should remove the drive from the device manager and should access the registry.

There remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

and then reboot the notebook.

Good luck

I need to do a clean re-install of my Satellite L25-S119. I have the Recovery and Applications DVD but am not sure if this includes Windows XP Home Edition. I got this laptop as a birthday present so am not sure if it comes with a separate Windows CD. Just want to make sure that I will get the Windows XP Home Edition back.

Answer:Satellite L25- Question about recovery DVD

The recovery DVD contains the already preinstalled operating system (factory settings). Separate Windows CD is not delivered with Toshiba notebooks. The recovery DVD contains operating system itself, all necessary drivers and all Toshiba designed tools and utilities.

I need the recovery CD for the Satellite A40-261, model no. PSA40E-OEWDE-IT

Can anyone show me were to download?

Answer:Need the recovery CD for Satellite A40-216 PSA40E

You cannot download it.
You have to purchase it from the ASP in your country!

But in some cases it?s not possible to order the Recovery disk if the notebook model is too old.
However, you will have to contact the ASP guys and will have to ask.

I made a booboo and need some help/advice to get things fixed.

My husband has a Satellite P200-RT2 running Win XP 32 bit (came with Vista but had been upgraded). The battery needs to be replaced, does not charge and he made the error of unplugging it while it was in the process of shutting down, but had not shut down completely. Laptop would not boot, even in Safe Mode.

So, I thought to try inserting a Win XP Pro disc thinking it might work to reboot the computer and get it started again. Nope, it took over and completely reformatted the laptop. So great, now have Win XP Pro on it, but cannot load all the Toshiba drivers which I downloaded from the Toshiba site.

I haven't been able to find out if there's a specific order to load the drivers.....have been doing some reading and am wondering if the BIOS one should be first?

Needless to say the Toshiba Recovery software is gone on the P200-RT2, I cannot find a separate drive which supposedly would contain it, there are only two drives listed, Drive C and D (for DVD's).

Toshiba tells me Microsoft sells the Recovery software, MS tells me only Toshiba sells it. There are sites online that have the recovery discs for Vista which I could buy/download but am unsure about which ones are reliable/safe.

Should mention that I have a newer Toshiba Laptop (L675-40X, Win 7) and have recovery discs for it.

Is it possible to use these recovery discs to get the Toshiba software loaded on the old P200-RT2?

Answer:Satellite P200-RT2 - Need some help with recovery

Recovery image is specific software package and created for certain notebook model so you cannot use it on different notebook models.

Now after WXP downgrade on this P200 you cannot use recovery image anymore. All you can do now is to install own OS version and install all necessary drivers, tools and utilities that you can download from Toshiba support page.

Long time ago I had P200D and I have used it with Win7 32bit and I can say that notebook performance was very good. I can just advice you to install Win7.

This is pretty old notebook model so I’m afraid you will not be able to order original recovery image. What you can try is to contact nearest service provider and ask for help. Maybe they can order one for you.

By the way: where have you bought your notebook (country)?

I have tried to do a product recovery on a satellite pro A60,

I put in disks 1 and 2 following the instructions and everything appears to work ok.
I then am told to remove recovery media and restart computer using ctrl, alt del

It restarts and goes through toshiba screen and onto windows xp screen....then a blue screen that says please wait while windows prepares to start... then onto windows xp professional screen with an egg timer saying please wait. Nothing else happens.

It doesn't do anything else, we left it for 3 hours today and it didnt move past this screen.

Has anyone else experienced this or can offer me some advice on how to make the laptop work again?

Answer:Satellite Pro A60 - recovery issue

I have installed the Windows and Toshiba Recovery many times and I didn?t notice this issue on any of my notebooks.
I remember that one times my Windows OS installation failed. I don?t know why?
But I have simply formatted my HDD, erased all partitions and started the installation again! The procedure finished successfully and notebook has booted into the Win XP OS.

You must understand that you issue could be related to the software only or to the hardware malfunction (HDD???)

One question; did you use the compatible Toshiba recovery CD? I have read many times about similar issues and finally the wrong recovery CD was the reason for the booting/installation problems.

Ensure that you sue the right CDs and then I would recommend repeating the OS installation.

i have lost my recovery cd's for my satellite pro 4600, i want to ask, how i can create new recovery cd's?

Is this possible?

Thanks at previous for helping me.

Greatings Scherrolino

Answer:Satellite Pro 4600 Recovery CD

The Sat Pro 4600 is a oldie therefore I?m not sure if you will be able to order the recovery CD from the ASP in your country.

However, you can install also a fresh OS on the notebook and then could install all available Toshiba drivers and tools.

All drivers you can find on the Toshiba European page in the *ARCHIVE*

Best regards

I have a satellite series laptop (A10), bought new 2 years ago.

Recently it has been running very slow, and following a lot of advice i have decided to reinstall windows.

Can i do this with the product recovery cd's that came with my computer? I have the 3 original disks that came with the computer. If it is possible, how do i do it? I read on another post (for a different series Toshiba laptop) that its a case of booting from the cd by holding down c whilst starting the computer - is this correct for the A10?

How difficult is the process? I have an external drive to back up files etc

Cheers for any help

Answer:Re-installing XP on Satellite A10 - Should I use recovery CD?

if you really want to reinstall your system, the easiest way is using the recovery CD.
First of all you should backup your important data to the external drive.

Then, as you already know, boot from the recovery disk #1 by pressing "C" when starting the laptop.
(This sometimes doesn't work, so you have to press F12 to get to boot menu, or press Esc to enter BIOS setup for changing boot priority.)

If the computer is booting from the disk (Win98), then just follow the appearing menus (it's really easy!!).
But don't forget, the whole HDD will be formatted.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A80 that I wish to pass onto my children.
Before that, I need to reinstall the XP O/S via the original Product Recovery DVD-ROM.

When I boot off the disk, it tells me that it works only on *"Toshiba PC's"* - press the button and it reboots.

Am I missing something? - Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite A80 XP recovery not working

Are you sure you have used the right and compatible CD?
Maybe the recovery disk was created for another different Toshiba notebook?

Otherwise something could be wrong with the DMI info which is stored on the motherboard.
The DMI contains different details about the notebook.
If this info is damaged or does not exist because mobo has been changed, then you will get such error message saying that this is not a Toshiba notebook or similar?

If worst case I recommend installing Win XP using an Microsoft Win XP CD. All Toshiba drivers for A80 can be found on Toshiba European driver page? Note; you have to choose Archive in order to find drivers.

I have had this laptop for a while, it has been getting progressively worse over the years and now appears to have completely given up.

I can barely open anything without being asked which programme i would like to open it with, and web browsing is becoming next to impossible.

I have all product recovery disks but when i attempt to use them by following the instruction "Insert disk in to drive, turn on your PC whilst keeping the C key pressed" nothing happens, after a whole lot of bleeping windows continues to load.

I am close to throwing this thing out of the window (I live in a 3rd floor flat) but cannont afford a replacement. If anyone can offer me any advice whatsoever i'd very much appreciate it.

Answer:Satellite Pro L10 - How to use product recovery?

Hi buddy,

If I understand you right you want to reinstall Windows. Is this right?

Therefore you should use the Toshiba recovery disk. As far as I know on old Satellite L10 there is no HDD recovery option available, so pressing the C key will not help you.

So insert the Toshiba recovery disk and start your notebook. Then go in the BIOS or BIOS boot menu and choose booting from CD/DVD drive.
The CD will start and you can reinstall Windows :)

Hi, hope I can be helped here,

I have a satellite C650-166, it ran out of battery while doing a standard windows update, now it wont re boot. I don't mind resting the laptop to factory settings, as I was planning to do so anyway.

I've followed the on screen instructions to launch startup repair, but whenever I do this it loads its files then goes to a black screen with just the cursor.

I've tried the, hold 0 way to repair and I just get the same every time, I hit the 'repair your computer' then it doesn't make it to the system recovery options...

I am using an external monitor, but I cant see this being the problem as I wouldn't be able to see the cursor.. surely?

Any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C650 won't run recovery

Generally speaking HDD recovery image installation works as described in follow document -
So please try with F8 at start-up. Does it works?

By the way: I presume you didn't create recovery media, right?

How to use the recovery of my Toshiba satellite l 655?

Is there any topic explain that

Answer:How to use the recovery on Satellite L655

I assume you are speaking about the Windows 7 which are preinstalled on the Satellite L655.
Am I right?

In case you did not change anything on this default system, the HDD recovery should be possible.
In such case I recommend you checking this doc:
[How to recover a Toshiba notebook with the HDD recovery procedure (Win 7)|]

You can also use the Toshiba Recovery disk to recover the notebook.
The recovery disk could be created using the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator software which is always preinstalled.

PS: all this details are mentioned in user manual as well in different threads here in the forum!

Hi there,

I recently got the Satellite M70 from on friend of mine.

But he lost his recovery cd and I would like to begin with a fresh installation...

How can I create a recovery CD for this laptop?

Thanks in advance

Answer:How to create recovery CD for Satellite M70

Seems like you have to contact your local ASP to get a new Recovery CD or you can order it online on this page:

If you have your own operating system installation disc, you can save Toshiba related drivers and utilities in this folder: C:\TOOLSCD, but I think not all programs can be found there.

Hope this helps.

did you checked your Recovery CD/DVD for scratches? Also it can be that your HDD has some faulty sectors which can be checked with Scandisk!
Scandsk is a DOS based tool which is on every MS bootdisk. You will find different bootdisks at
When you will connect a FDD USB drive and start the notebok, you have to press F12 for boot menu! Choose FDD USB and the bootdisk will start. Then you can use scandisk.
After that you can use a tool called
This will format your HDD.
When you finished and cleaned your recovery CD you should try the recovery again!

I'm an happy user of Toshiba labtop but i actualy have a problem with Windows 7 restorationon my Satellite C650-17N.
WhenI bougth my computer I had made my revory DVD but I didn't test the recovery process.
Today my hard driver crashed and I tried to launch the recovery process with the DVD but It block a little time after the begining.

I have an old satellite C650 (This is what the Toshiba website says....) and I have a problem with Windows 7 restoration. My hard drive crashed and when I receved the new one I tried to restore Windows 7 with the recovery DVD but It didn't work. At the beginning of the Install the directory copy fails at the 'warn html' copy. If I read the DVD on another computer this directory doesn't exist. But during the install windows try to copy this folder and ask me to 'insert the DVD recovery'..... the install can't continue.....
Has anyone the same problem ?

Hello guys

I had a few questions about the recovery CD:

1- What does the recovery CD contain? and the other CD which is called Media something?

2- Does it have Windows in it? So I can format my PC using it? And from where can i find the product key (windows key)

3- What if i wanted to use the CD without formatting? etc. installing the softwares?

Sorry for asking too much but my laptop started disturbing me. Just for knowledge my Laptop is satellite A100-847

Answer:What does the recovery CD contain - Satellite A100-847

I will try to answer your question.

1 ? Recovery media contains recovery image. Recovery image is a kind of package that contains operating system, all necessary drivers, Toshiba tools and utilities and some additional software like WinDVD or Norton antivir application. ?Media something?? is not known to me. Maybe exact description can help.

2 ? Yes it has Windows OS. Yes you can format your notebook using it. You do not need product key. Just install it.

3 ? I do not know what you mean. The fact is that HDD will be formatted before you start recovery installation. Be sure all your important data are saved on some external device.
