Can't separate Headphone and speaker audio

Question: Can't separate Headphone and speaker audio

Hi, Just bought a new Acer E15 (E5-571G). It works great, but in my daily life, I have to use headphones a lot (I don't use laptop speakers at all). But no matter how hard I try, sound is coming both from speakers and the headphones. I have the latest Realtek HD audio drivers. Realtek recognizes when a device is plugged in the audio jack, but still, under 'playback' devices, there is only one option - Speakers. Running Windows 10, Build 10162. The headphones work great on another laptop with the same build. This is my last resort, Please help! I don't want to void the warranty, by manually opening and disabling the laptop speakers.

Preferred Solution: Can't separate Headphone and speaker audio

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't separate Headphone and speaker audio

i would try to install the latest Realtek 2.79 from Realtek website: tick "i accept...." then choose 32 or 64 bit driver, uninstall your Realtek drivers then install the new one.

Hey guys I have a lenovo G51-35 I bought a week ago and its running windows 10. I want to know how to set different volume levels for the speaker and headphones. I tried the volume mixer but for some reason it didn't show my headphone volume, only my speaker. It didn't even show under playback devices with hidden devises ticked. I looked online for help but it didn't work. I updated the audio drivers, I installed the windows 8.1 audio drivers but that didn't work, I installed the windows 7 audio drivers but that didn't work either. I need help with this, because I can't see my headphone volume, only my speaker volume. The sound works fine, but the speaker and headphones share the same audio volume, which annoys me. Please someone help me.

Answer:G51-35 - Is it possible to separate speaker and headphone sound? Lenovo G51-35

Hi Zaker_Choudhury
Welcome to the Community Forums
If you have Realtek HD Audio Manager Go into your realtek audio manager similar to this link. If there isn't an icon in the bottom right, go to control panel, hardware and sound, realtek hd audio manager. In the top right there is a "device advanced settings" where you can select to make your outputs as 2 different streams
Then you may just adjust volume on each.
Another option within windows under playbackChoose properties Listen and Level tabs to change.
Software tools can also be helpful similar to Virtual Audio Cable .
Physical modifications via splitter audio jack to USB  is also an option.
Update us how it goes for you.

I recently got a Clevo laptop (from Origin PC), which has Realtek audio drivers.

To try and fix some BSOD problems, i did a repair install of Windows and uninstalled/reinstalled lots of drivers (using the original driver installers provided by Origin).
But now i don't have separate volume for when the headphones are plugged in. Instead, the volume remains the same as when they are unplugged.

I set Realtek HD Audio Manager to have separate jacks (not "tie up" all inputs), but that did nothing.

When that manager app is running, it pops up a tray notification whenever the headphone is plugged or unplugged, so i know it knows when it's plugged in. However, those notifications are annoying as hell, so i don't run that app always. Besides, i never saw the notifications back when the volume was working.

I looked at the sound window from Windows control panel, and it lists the speakers and something else (digital audio, perhaps? i think it's the optic output), but no headphones. I'm not sure if it has always been that way.

By the way, i should point out that the headphones still work, and sound is not output from the speakers when they are plugged in. I just can't control the volume separately.

I can get more details when i get home. But has anyone else had this same problem, or know how to fix it?

Answer:No separate speaker and headphone volume anymore

It would help if we knew what version of Windows you're running. Vista and later don't have the mixer that XP has.

I am using Win7 on my Presario V3000. Its working fine, but there are still some problem with this laptop. I still can hear the audio come out from the speaker and the headphone when I plug in my headphone.

Answer:audio comes frm both speaker and headphone

Usually there is a physical connection that breaks when you plug in the headphones. Did this just start happening?

Hello, I am running windows 7 home premium 64 bit on a new Dell Inspiron 14z -5432 laptop with built-in skull candy speakers and Maxx audio. the Audio in the right speaker is much quieter than the left speaker. I checked the drivers and the L/R balance and all were OK. The problem continues when I plug in my headphones to the headphone jack. The audio balance doesn't help or fix the problem. My sound card is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. When I open my IDT audio control panel and test the speakers or headphones, the sound is stronger on the left and gets some sound 'leaking' from the right speaker. But when I test the right speaker, It is quieter and gets no sound 'leakage' from the left speaker. I don't know how to fix this problem. Any help?

Answer:Help. Audio is much quieter in right speaker/headphone.

This sounds more like a hardware problem than something in the driver or applications software.

You can post on the Dell users form, Laptop section, and maybe someone can offer something there, but contacting Dell support is the best option.

Hello,Recently, right after I updated my Desktop to Windows 10 x64 edition, I noticed that the audio would come out of both the speakers and my headphones, and gradually start to only come out of the speakers. I've tried playing through several different headphones, but they did not work either, and tried both front and rear jacks. Even after restarting, I would fnd myself with the exact same problem a few seconds later. The audio is completely fine when only on speaker, though.

There is usually a hardware switch in the socket, which is engaged when you put the plug in. Seems like it might be mechanically broken.

I just got a new XPS 8900. I've looked through all of the Windows 10, Dell Audio, and MaxxAudio settings, but I can't find what i'm looking for.
I want to be able to play audio through my headset and my speakers at the same time. Reason being, the "front jacks" are actually about 3/4 of the way back on the top of the case. My case sits under my desk. In order to plug in my headset to use voice comms and unplug it when I just want to listen to my speakers, i have to actually crawl under my desk to reach the stupid jack.
My previous PC had a simple checkbox in its audio configuration software: "Mute speakers when headphones are plugged in?" I made use of this checkbox about 4 times a day. I've had this new XPS for 2 days and I'm already sick of crawling under my desk.
Please tell me there's a way to play audio through my headset and speakers simultaneously.

Hi, Omarattia  ?
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
You can also start by flushing out all static, remove battery and AC adaptor and hold down power button for about 15 seconds.
Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

I just purchased a 15R Special Edition 7520. I placed the laptop in a desktop situation (use ext. keyboard + mouse + HD 1920x1080 monitor). Obviously I want to use the HDMI output to link to the HD monitor, like I have done for many years with my XPS 1640 laptop with HD HDMI output. I was surprised to see that when the HDMI out put is used the audio to the speaker/headphone jack is muted. I have searched through all the on-board menus, but cannot find a setting to allow audio to continue being outputted while the HDMI jack is in use.
Am I missing something here? I assumed this laptop would operate the same as the XPS 1640, in applications where the operator is using an HD monitor in a desktop situation (no built in monitor speakers) or a situation where you desire to feed your own audio system directly from the Laptop. BTW, I also own a DELL ZINO HD desktop with HDMI output, which does not behave the same way the 15R does. That system isalso hooked vis HDMI to an HD monitor, with no muting of the local sound.
Am I the only one who as had thisd prob? Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks... Paul...

Answer:Audio combo jack vs headphone/earphone with mic and speaker connector

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !
On your computer the audio jacks along with the USB port are mounted on a card that is separate from the motherboard.  The two are then connected with a ribbon cable.  If your headphone jack is inoperable with more than one pair of headphones and the USB port does not work would be a good indication of a problem with the card.
Just to rule out a possible hardware conflict try doing a BIOS reset.  Just do this.......
1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.
If the reset did not correct the problem then I would suspect either the audio card is faulty or the ribbon cable has become disconnected.  In that case I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for additional service especially if your warranty is still active.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....

I have Lenovo 3000 Y410 laptop having Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. Realtek HD Audio latest driver is installed. But from the last 3 days, when I connect headphone through laptop, following things happen : -
1) Headphone connected popup doesn't show up.
2) Mic of Headphone connected pop shows up.

3) When I play video, sound coming from both headphone & laptop speakers.
4) When I mute sound by muting sound icon in taskbar, sound then comes only from headphone.

What I have tried?
1) Installed new Realtek HD Audio Manager.
2) Installed OS again.
3) Tried to change settings in Realtek Hd Audio Manager. But Nothing changes.

When I input headphone & mic jacks into laptop, & then check Realtek HD Audio Manager. The following image shows this : -

The green in realtek hd audio manager is for headphone & red is for mic. In the image, it is shown that headphone not connected & mic connected. But even headphone not connected shows up, sound coming form headphone.

I want to get sound from only headphone when headphone is connected. Is this a hardware problem ?

Please help....

Answer:Sound coming from both headphone & speaker but headphone is not detect

My Realtek HD Audio Manager has more options than yours.

Also, I notice you only have the microphone in the Recording Section of the Sound Panel. RIGHT click in an empty space in that Panel and then LEFT click Show Disabled and Disconnected devices. The Stereo Mix should be shown and you can enable that and make it the default Recording device.

Where did you get the RealTek driver that you installed? If you are not using the Lenovo supplied sound driver, get that and install it as a first step. I have a Lenovo Laptop and it has Stereo Mix and other functions. I haven't looked at the RealTek HD manager so I'm not sure what all it shows.

Hello Eight Forums.

My trouble is the audio output through headphones - background is louder than foreground (especially in music - I often cannot hear the vocals at all; movies however are mostly fine, for reasons unknown to me; but generally, the sound is always different in some way).

I only have one pair of headphones to test it with. However these always worked fine with previous machines, and still do work fine with my iPhone 4. Although they are surely not the case, I cannot with confidence say that if it were a loudspeaker instead things wouldn't have been different.

So this is either a software or a hardware issue.

My computer (details at the bottom) came with a SoundBlaster X-Fi MB3 equalizer program and RealTek High Def Audio drivers. I've uninstalled SoundBlaster hoping it would fix the issue (I didn't need an extra program like that anyway) but alas to no avail. Updating the RealTek drivers did no good still.

The only thing I haven't touched is the ghostly NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (can it be the source of my trouble?) - I only first noticed it now when copy/pasting the Belarc data. I'll try and find out about it in the meanwhile.

I wonder if it perhaps has something to do with my audio jack (laptop's brand new, but you can never know). I have what appears to be mic, headphone, S/PDIF and line in jacks... Is there a way to use the microphone or the line-in to test the headphones? To see if the headphone out is broken.

Answer:Messed up headphone audio; want to check headphone jack

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

Okay I may be posting in the wrong subject but this is sort of a split issue. I'm currently running dual monitors using my monitor and also running my TV via an HDMI. The problem I'm having isn't with dual monitors but with the sound between them.

What would be ideal is that when I'm running a game or whatever on my monitor and then maybe streaming a youtube, movie, ect... on my second monitor (the TV), I'd like the game's sound to come from my computer headphones and the video sound to come from my TV. To this point I haven't found a way to make that happen. All that I know to do is go to control panel and set the default sound device to either my TV or my speakers. There's no option to split the sound between the two. So right now if I'm doing separate tasks on two different monitors, all of the sound is either from my speakers or from the TV. I know most dual monitors set ups are run with two actual monitors side by side so this isn't an issue, because of this I can't imagine this is a common issue. plus i know that some games give me the option to do just that but most do not.

So my goal is to have the sound from any task running on my monitor to come out of my headphones. At the same time, any task that is running off of my TV should have its sound running through my TV. Any ideas?

Answer:How can I separate my tv speaker and headphones sound?

Ps. i am running windows 10

With a Dell you are, in most cases, limited to the available Dell sound drivers. Non-Dell sound drivers in most cases either do not work or do now work correctly. For example the generic Windows/Microsoft installed HD Audio Codec sound driver is just a basic function driver and does not have any extra options such as speaker configuration.

Download the available Dell Vista/Win7 driver (it will work for Win8) four your specific model and then check to see if you have the speaker option. This assumes there is a Dell driver for your model. You failed to include your Dell model number so I can't check or link you directly to the driver. Dell drivers are at

Hi Cal360,

Welcome to the forum

This is an interesting request I know that it is possible to have 2 or more sounds coming out of the same speakers, but to separate these sounds??

The only way I can think that this might work would be to use 2 soundcards, a quick search through the net shows that this might well work, I am not so sure, so I am going to try it (if I can find my old soundcard) I'll let you know the result

My right headphone speaker wont work. I have had problems with there being no audio before but all i had to do was reboot my computer. But now im only hearing it out my left headphone. Is there a fix for it?

Answer:Right headphone speaker out

Have you tried the headphone is some other device to make sure it's not the headphone or a dirty plug on the headphone? Also wiggle the plug in the jack and see if you get the right side to work.

Finally, check the balance, if you have one in case it's set to left only. On my system, if I doubleclick on the speaker icon in the Sound Panel, another panel comes up and in the Levels section there is an option for L/R Balance.

To be honest I don't understand your problem. You can control volume level using F9 and F10 keys or using Windows volume mixer.

Reduce volume level before you connect headphones and speaker and I hope there will no be any risk for your ears. ;)

Hey Auto2. The first thing I would do is bring your machine up to SP3 as it's been out for years now. XP with SP2 is not supported. You can download then double-click on the self executing SP3 file from the link below. This 316MB file is for the 32bit version of XP which most people have.Disregard the IT Pros nomenclature, takes about 15-20 minutes on average to install once you start it.

When I plug my headphones in, I don't hear anything, and the speakers still work. First thought would be the jack socket, but if I go into playback devices, and select headphones, and run the test, they work perfectly. If I reboot my pc, with the headphones plugged in, they work, but I can't get the speakers to. Again, running a test, shows them to work. I have even tried updating the drivers, but apparently, I have the latest drivers. I'm totally lost now as to what the problem/solution is. Hope someone can help.

Assuming you have the correct ASUS supplied sound driver, RIGHT click on the Device Manager entry for the sound to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall" DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. If there was a corruption, this will fix that problem.

My soundcard has front/rear/headphone channels. I would like to play music through the speakers and still be able to listen to my headphone; is this possible? Basically, I want to be like my own private DJ. I would like to use the headphone to listen to another music while another music is playing through the speakers.

Answer:how do I use headphone and speaker simultaneously?

Try connecting your speakers to the 'line out' jack (if they are powered speakers) on the soundcard.

What connections are available on the soundcard?
What connection are you connecting your headphones and speakers to?

I have a lenovo g50-70 I7 with dobly smart audio and windows 8.1my laptop has been working fine for some time now but now,  my speakers arn't working anymore. I also noticed me headphones kinda work, but only the left side. I tested the headphone on my phone but both ears are functioning, so it must be an issue with the laptop. I already updated/reinstalled the audio driver twice, and used the control pannel troubleshooting, but no luck.I searched trough the settings but it seems like everything is okay there too.please help

Answer:Speaker and headphone issues with G50-70

Hi Pigskin,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Try checking the Smart Audio Software settings
Open Control Panel and look for Smart Audio Icon Open that to Launch the application,
Click on the third icon below and check if The setting Classical or Multi stream will make any difference

Also try checking the levels and balance of your Audio Device, Try checking here,
Open Control Panel  / Hardware and Sound / Sound
Then Check this article for further reference
The left and right should be both on the same audible level
Also check the Main Audio Level slide

I have a 2.1 speaker set attached to my laptop that does not have its own headphone jack. So in order to listen to headphones I have to unplug the 2.1 from the headphone jack and plug in the headphones. I tried a cheap splitter but that didn't sound good.

What I would like is something that had two jacks that allowed me to keep the 2.1 plugged in all the time in one jack and when I want to use the headphones I could just plug them into the other jack. I would like both jacks whether used together or solo to have the same sound quality as a single jack... with no degradation in sound.

Lastly, I would like to be able to mute the 2.1 (using volume control on the speaker set) and still get great controllable sound out of the jack that have the headphones plugged in.

Is there something like that? Thanks.

It seems that when i use either Earphones or Headphones, The sounds coming through them seem low to me. But coming through the computers speakers seem fine to me. I updated the Realtek Sound Driver twice already. Does anybody from Acer support or from the community have any suggestions?

Answer:why is my speaker volume so low, through Headphone...

Could you please provide the model of which notebook you are using?
Do the headphones/earphone have their own separate volume that can be adjusted. I know that the ones I use have a separate dial I can use that adjusts the sound independently from whatever I have set Windows to.
Is the volume in general low, or only using certain applications/programs. If you right click on the volume icon in the task bar and choose "Open Volume Mixer" is everything in use turned up?

A while back, I had a problem with my taskbar which I found was caused by a new audio driver from Windows Update clashing with my current audio driver. I managed to solve the problem by uninstalling the older driver so that the newer driver could complete it's installation. At first, there did not seem to be any more problems with my computer.

Well recently, I tried to use headphones for the first time since fixing the first problem, and I discovered a strange glitch. Whenever I start a program that uses sound such as iTunes or Firefox without anything plugged in, the speakers will be perfectly fine. But if I attempt to plug in my headphones while the program is playing sound, the headphones will not work and the speakers will continue to play.

The opposite is also true. If I open a program with sound while my headphones are plugged in, the speakers shut off and the headphones work normally. However, if I unplug the headphones while the program is still playing sound, the speakers STILL won't play anything, and plugging the headphones back in will not restore the sound; I have to turn off the program and restart it to get the sound back. In a sense, the headphones can no longer "hotplug".

The computer recognizes when the headphones are plugged in, and the headphones work fine during a sound test. It's only when I load a program that can play continuous sound that the glitch takes place. Once again, virus scans from AVG yield nothing.

Good afternoon, My laptop (Toshiba Satellite L650) Stopped playing sound out of the Speakers. I recently fixed this rolling drivers back, and disable/reenabling them.

This resulted in me having to disable the speakers, and restart every program that I wanted sound to play from so I was able to listen to the sound from my headphones.

Now, after almost a week, my speakers are not producing any sound at all. As they are internals, I cannot test them on something else.

I don't know whether there is an issue with my sound card, that is causing it, but my headphones play perfectly fine.

So, basically, I would like to know, how to fix my Internal speakers, and how to make the swap between Speakers and Headphones, automatic, so I don't have to close everything, and then disable the device I do not want to use.

Thank you, and have a great day.

hi, my problem is with headphones and speakers. I have tried plugging headphones in to the tower and nothing works. My old speakers are altec lansing and have no place to plug headphones into, the green wire goes into back of subwoofer, and with no hydro plug. My new speakers are same brand and have a hydro plug as well as a place to plug headphones into. I plugged green wire from new speakers into back of subwoofer and into a hydro outlet and nothing happens. Volume is set at high on speaker icon. What else can I try.

I put together my first rig this weekend and I've come across a few quirks, but this is the first I haven't been able to figure out with google and I've just about had it with random sound issues with one of these drivers to begin with (Realtek HDA, had some serious trouble getting my computer to acknowledge I had a microphone.)

My monitor (just an old tv) is getting sound via the HDMI cable to my graphics card which is using the audio drivers from that (NVIDIA Audio). My headset is using the front panel audio connected to the motherboard, which is using a separate driver (Realtek HDA). If I plug in my headset any programs opened before plugging in still play through the monitor, and those opened after through the headset. The same thing happens when I unplug the headset, those playing through it before unplugging keep (trying) to play through it.

I can easily remedy this just by closing and reopening all of my programs whenever I switch, but I sometimes switch often enough that this is a bit of a hassle. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

Edit: More anomalies. My sound mixer is denying skype. It will appear in the mixer for a few minutes, then go away. (No unplugging involved) I haven't been able to find a specific cause for this yet or a set of circumstances that causes it.

Answer:Headphone to Speaker Dilemma!

In the Control Panel there's a Sounds icon, there you can change the default playback and recording devices. You can re-assign those devices there. I don't think programs will allow you to switch an audio device while in use unless they offer an in-program audio device selection, Skype for example does under options.

So here's my story:

I decided to see if I could listen to music directly from my sound card instead of my speakers. I unplugged the speakers, plugged in my headphones. No go. So I plugged my speakers back in and then I couldn't hear any sounds from it. So I restarted my computer. This half-fixed the problem.

Now I only have sound from my left headphone/speaker. I have checked all the balances and they are normal. I do not blast my music.

I would be very thankful if someone could help me with this problem. Thanks.

Answer:Sound Gone From Right Speaker/Headphone

Welcome to TSG....

switching the speakers to the headphones could have caused a mismatch with the sound card circuitry since the resistance or impedance of the devices is greatly different and could have possibly made one or both sides not work. I would suggest turning-off the computer for a few hours and then plug the speakers back in and reboot it might be that just letting the circuitry cool off will fix it. If it still does the same thing I would have somebody look at it who is qualified to fix this type of circuitry.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to read.

Usually ok with things like this.. but dont know where else to turn.. i ll try map it as best as i can..

i have recently rebuilt a new PC, (old one was kinda dated) everything is running fine.. until i try to use sound on my monitor speakers (iiyama visionmaster pro 454) the sound is coming out very crackly, i play around with the sound moving balance to left speaker only (testing that maybe one has blown) sound was kind of better on the left. I then decided to update my sound drivers which fixed the problem, no more crackling. A few days later i try to connect my headset.. and now i have the problem that sound is only from the left side.. i check the audio balance, everything is how it should be.. i have reinstalled drivers, downloaded realtek.. nothing seems to let me play sound from my right headphone.. ( i have tested headphones on my mp3, nothing faulty at all ) i have onboard sound graphics, so i grabbed one of them small USB to headphones adaptors as they have small built in soundcards to them, ( testing if maybe i have somehow blown my onboard sound ? ) now this wont even detect the USB headset.. i really dont know what else to do..

Answer:Right headphone/speaker problem

What is your motherboard? Which hardware are you using? It's impossibole to give any advice without more information on the problem.

I recently got the Sound Blaster Tactic 3D Alpha headset for Christmas and tried them out. I plugged in the USB thing that came with it, which allowed you to plug the headphones and mic into a USB port, and it installed the device fine. Right now I have to send them back because of a problem with the headset. But when I unplugged the USB I noticed that I have no speaker in playback devices. And when I plug in my older headphones into the front of the computer they don't appear in the playback devices. I tried checking "Show disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices" but all I get are four Digital Audio (HDMI) devices. The same thing shows up in Device Manager.

I could use my headphones but only when the Sound Blaster USB thing was plugged in. I have Realtek High Definition Audio but now it doesn't show up in Device Manager. Also, my speakers are built into my monitor.

Answer:No headphone or speaker device.

Hello laetes, welcome to the Sevenforums!

You might try using a restore point to before the headphones were installed: System Restore

Or reinstalling your Audio drivers (uninstall previous, install newer one from motherboard or sound card's website)

Alright, I have a pair of headphones that I use at night so I don't wake everyone in the building up, and during the day I normally have a set of 2.1 logitech speakers. Right now they are connected with a in-line Y to split the audio. But I'd like to hook up a second pair of 2.1 speakers behind me so I can have 4 channel sound during the day. I'm wondering if there is any software out there to have 4 channel on the speakers, and 2 channel out to my headphones without having to rewire/configure it every day.

Answer:Headphone and Speaker hookup

Do you have a front panel headphone jack on your PC case? If so, you can use the front for headphones and the back with the splitter for four speakers.

Hi, I read a number of threads on here already in relation to trying to get my headphones to work on my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I've managed to get my headphones to play music (barely, because they still play although the volume is set to zero on the computer, yet full on Realplayer). Now, I deactivated my speakers on the control panel, but now there is no way I can reactivate them. The "Show Disabled Devices" does not exist as far as I know. If you're not aware by now, I am computer illiterate.

Hi Gnocchi, Welcome to the Forum.

Right click on your speaker icon, click on Playback Devices, Right click on one of the audio devices and then click on show disabled devices.

You should also be able to select and configure a headphone device.

Hello there, my first post on this forum and i hope to be abled to help in any way if possible! I am usually pretty good at solving problems with my pc logically, but. . .

Just the other day, my younger brother managed to break my front headphone jack (green one), it is actually snapped off the circuit board within. since this happened, my rear audio jack, also green, seems to only be playing sounds really quietly, i have tried all the sound properties and options within my pc and have had no success. one thing i managed was to plug my speakers into a blue audio jack on the rear of my pc and change the options on my sound effect manager to make my pc use the blue jack as my rear speakers, doing this i can listen to music but when i play games the audio is messed up, i cant seem to make it use the blue jack as the front speakers.

so. . . im looking for a way or making my pc forget ever having a front headphone/audio jack and just using the rear one at full volume again with all of the sound comming through there, or, i was hoping there would be a way of routing all my pc's audio to the blue audio socket, my knowledge in pc audio is limited so im unsure of what to do next.
if there is software that routs all my pc,s audio to a different socket i would be greatefull for it/a link to it!

Hey guys, I recently bought some nice 5.1 speakers, and 5.1 headphones. The problem is when I need to switch between the two its a pain in the *** to have to unplug the cables from the case every time. So I was wondering if there was a type of splitter or cable I could get? Keep in mind the speakers AND the headphones have the black, pink, and green jacks, and actually the headphones have a extra orange jack for voice. Anyways, thanks a lot.

Plugging in headphones does not switch to headphones.
If I wish to switch from speaker to headphone, the only way is to go into playback devices and select one or the other as default. I can't default both. Checking one as default (speaker) and the other as communication device also doesn't help.
I notice that many others on the forums have a single choice, that is, speaker/headphones. Mine are separate. Also, I have VIA HD Audio(Win 10).
Not sure what other information will help.

Hi, An update several weeks ago introduced an annoyance that I've recently found the time to try and fix. However, the problem seems to be more involved than I anticipated.  Before this update, the speakers and headphone out were two separate playback devices. Now they are a single one ("Speakers/HP"). The most important feature I feel like I've lost is the ability to set their volumes separately - e.g.: if the headphones are unplugged, the previously muted speakers continue to be muted, instead of blaring sound. Very useful in quiet settings if you're clumsy about headphones or unsure whether you left music playing upon sleep. This feature seemed to be standard, as I don't remember setting it up. Some brief googling mentions a Realtek HD Audio Manager that you can fiddle with in the Windows Control Panel that allows you to change this behaviour. However, more googling mentions that it is no longer supported. Not only is it not in the Control Panel, running the executable it's associated with (RAVCpl64.exe) results in it asking for admin permissions and then failing silently after permissions are granted - what I assume people mean when they say no longer supported. Here's what I've tried:going into sound > playback devices and making sure disconnected and disabled devices are shown - only the new combined "Speakers/HP" device existsdigging around in the properties menu for the Speakers/HP device to see if Realtek moved settings int... Answer:T450S, Windows 10 - want to restore headphones and speaker as separate devices

Hello and welcome,
This isn't something I can help with, but a question and a comment:
What was updated a few weeks ago?  What's in the Windows and the System Update history?  That might help track things down.
I just fired up my T450s and see the same thing you describe: speakers/HP combined.  Went to the Realtek High Definition Audio device in device manager.  Current driver is dated 2017.05.02.  Did a roll-back to dated 2016.06.21.  No diffference
My point being that while it might be a Realtek driver update causing the problem it must have been lurking for quite a while.  I'm wondering if it's a Win 10 thing.
Sorry I can't provide specific help with this.  I tried poking around the Realtek site for older drivers, but the  site is so slow it's unusable

I recently discovered a difference in the volume; the left speaker of the laptop has been functioning normally while there seems to be very low to no sound coming from the right speaker.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15 5559 Audio - Right Speaker has low volume while the left speaker functions normally

Hello. You didn't mention the headphone jack, so if you have not yet done so, plug in headphones and see if the balance is okay in them. If the headphones check out okay, then most probably it's a problem related to the speakers.
The test for speakers is the ePSA audio test. It is a hardware test, which means that if the test  tones are very low in the right speaker, but normal in the left speaker, then there is hardware failure somewhere, related to the right speaker.
If both speakers sound normal during the test, then the problem is in the software. Do the usual things like re-install the audio driver, check the balance levels in the Sound properties, try different audio sources, etc.
Re-installing the audio driver resets the settings to their default configurations, so if you do it then you don't have to bother with things like volumes and balance settings, because they will be okay.(Also if the balance is okay through headphones, then it should be okay through the speakers too.)
Here is how to do a simple driver re-install:
1.    Open the Device Manager.2.    Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" category.3.    Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".4.    Click "uninstall".5.    Do not check the box to “delete the driver software for this device”. 6.    Restart the computer. Windows will detect your device a... Read more

Suddenly, out of the blue, plugging in my headphones or external speakers no longer automatically mutes my laptop's internal speakers. I guess it could be a problem with the headphone socket/jack, but sending it in for this would be a pain. Is there any way simply to disable the laptop speakers without having to open the laptop? I use the external speakers or headphones for sound anyway, so that would do fine as a solution. Any ideas anyone?

Welcome to TechSpot

Looks like either the jack has gone on the blink (unlikely), or one of its wires has come undone.
Either you open the laptop yourself and fix it by resoldering or replacing the jack one way or another, or send it in.
If it is still under warranty, the last would be your best bet. If not, it is cheaper to do a bit of DIY.

Hello I've bought my Lenovo laptop about half a year ago. From the very beginning the headphone audio jack had some problems, there would be no sound when headphones are plugged in, however restarting the laptop usually helped. I have not had this problem for a few months until now. When I plug in headphones, no sound comes out and restarting the computer does not help. Furthermore, the sound of the laptop speakers seems to be a big different than it normally used to be - the sound is a bit lower and so to say ''dimmer''. Please let me know I could fix it.

Hi Guys,
Facing a weird problem for a long time (3 months or more but got chance to google it today). Its a dell studio 1555 with IDT High Definition Audio Codec with windows 7 x64 Ultimate OS. I had to give a clean OS after a fatal crash and sound is giving a weird problem from then. No sound through my speaker;only through headphones. If I remove headphone then IDT setup options pop ups and I cant' work until headphone is there....

Downloaded the latest driver from dell's recommended site and still not good...
tried to uninstall and restricting the auto installation by windows from "gpedit.msc" and manual installation through the latest driver..yet nothing happened...
growing Mad...I know it is drivers problem but can't fix me plz...

BTW: Systeminfo.exe shows two sound card
1) IDT
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

2) Microsoft
High Definition Audio Device

Please help me out...please please...

Answer:No sound in speaker but in Headphone for IDT Codec

On a Dell you need to use the Dell supplied sound driver for proper operation. Delete the "Microsoft" which was apparently installed when you installed Windows. Go to the Device Manager and uninstall the Microsoft, just leaving you the Dell. Uninstall the Microsoft and then restart the PC and see if it gets corrected. Make sure your IDT sound card "Speakers" are set as the Default Playback device in the Sound Panel.

Why did you do a manual reinstall? There is a Dell recovery partition on the hard drive (or at least was when it was new), accessed by F8 at POST that would have restored everything to the original factory condition (and no discs or driver downloads needed). That is the best way to reinstall.

I have made a post on this before but there have been some changes to the machine since then. So here is my problem. Sometimes the audio will work fine, during these times I am happy with it.When playing audio over the main speakers with nothing in the audio jack, it will think there is something in the audio jack and route the audio there, so I cant hear anything. I can tell this is happening because the system volume control will now display the headphone level. It will also flicker between the speakers and headphone audio levels which is the only reason I noticed this. When the headphones are in, they tend to work more often than the main speaker. However it will also think that the headphones are not plugged in and switch back to the main speakers. Its common for it to switch between states rapidly and repeatedly for several seconds. The problem should not be related to the headphones I am using. I use 3 different pairs, all of which use the headphone jack and not USB (never tried usb or bluetooth audio actually). For some reason touching the case seems to matter. I dont know if its in my head or something, but oftend putting a little tension on the front of the case seems to help, like putting a dice under the left or right front rubber foot. So I have looked around and tried many solutions.I have tried upgrading to windows 10, problem remainedI have reinstalled the OS com... I'm glad to hear you are so socially responsible with your sound.

In answer to your question. Yes and No!. Yes but it would only work in the program concerned, not as a general channel swop, which is set in hardware. Audio editing programs such as Cubase will do it.

Can't these beneficiaries of your restraint club together to get you an extension? They are very cheap.

Hi guys

Im new to the forums, ... looked through a lot of threads for info on my problem. Cant find anything to help me. Figured maybe i can sign up and post my problem... hoping one of you smart guys might catch the answer.

The short: audio plays through back audio jack and front audio jack at the same time.

Would like for my computer to recognize that the front(headphones) is plugged in and stop playing sound through the speakers. (Late night computer usage)

Details: Motherboard: Geforce7050m-m
Using onboard sound.
Currently using Realtek Hd audio manager Version
What i have tried: (pretty much ripped a hole in google by searching every forum on the subject)
-Opened my computer to check if my front audio jacks are plugged in
-plugged in my headphones - no sound
-found in article about marking "disable front panel jack detection"
-sounds works through headphones, in front jack YAY
-now both speakers and headphones play sound.

-installed drivers from ECS website for my motherboard
-installed drivers from latest

Nothing worked to control the sound coming from one device at a time.
Weird things: A lot of people have device advanced settings. I dont.
- in those options there should be an option where it says "mute rear output device, when front headphones are plugged in"
-i wish i had that option, but i dont get the advanced folder at all.

I have a Gigabyte MoBo w/High Definition Audio, Main Speakers are the Logitech Z5500.And on a Rare Occasion it would help if I could Have the Headphones On with the Main Speakers On too. The Case has a Audio Control, However it only works with a Pin-Type Jack for Headphone,This G390 uses PnP USB 2.0.Can someone steer me down the right path if there is such a thing?

Answer:Headphone or Main Speaker Control

I just recently encountered a problem with the sound on my desktop computer. As the title says, audio out of the right speaker or headphone is barely audible. It happened after returning back from school so there was probably some shaking of the computer during transit, I'm assuming this would have something to do with it. I'm fairly certain it's hardware related.

I've checked every audio setting that I'm aware of (driver software, Windows configuration, looked at the sound device properties in Windows hardware window) and can't find any reason for the low sound. All of the audio is balanced, Windows says the device is working properly, none of the configuration utilities indicate any sort of problem with the device. I've even tried playing with every setting I could fine, to see what effect it may have on the problem. Nothing really affects the problem in any way. I have also tried reinstalling the drivers.

I also have a front panel sound port that I can and have been using that works perfectly fine, though.

Here is my motherboard:

The audio specifications according to that site are:

Realtek ALC888 codec
High Definition Audio
Support for S/PDIF In/Out
Support for CD In
I realize that's really more of a list of features but I haven't been able to find anything more technical than that. Windows identifies the device that I'... Read more

I have a G50 with windows 8. About two months into owning it one day the speakers and the right headphone just stopped working. Both of these problems happened simultaneously. Since then I've upgraded to windows 10 which didn't fix the problem(I was hoping is was a software problem). I've downgraded back to 8 due to unrelated driver errors in windows 10.  When I look at the playback tab it says the speakers are disconnected, but clicking reconnect doesn't do anything. Also not sure why only the left headphone works. Do I need to physically connect a card?

Answer:Lenovo G50 speaker & headphone problem

Hi TheKennethLush  ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
One other option that is usually done on this event is system restore to previous working state before the audio issue.
You can also try rollback drivers or uninstalling and reinstall the audio drivers from the device manager .
Support site offers new drivers available for your system.
If both internal and right headphone is not working at the same time , it may either be the drivers or audio board inside.
To best isolate it fastest between hardware and software is the Factory restore Onekey recovery.
It would delete everything and you need to back up first. Out of the box settings would be restored.
To acces it , turn on the computer using the Novo key , a small button usually next to the power to launch System Recovery from Initial back up.
If you would stilll have the same issue then best you check on current warranty service type you have and call in support.
Update us how it goes for you.

I wish to connect one pair of headphones, one set of speakers to two or three computers. Something like a change-over switch is being considered, so that I can change from one computer to another, for sound purposes.
Any ideas or product links, that you might think would do the job, in the simplest way?.

Answer:Headphone/Speaker connected to more than 1 computer?

Plenty with phono connectors here. eg Items 3,5,6,12.
Use 3.5mm to phono cables of whatever length. eg Similar to this
And a female version

I just bought a new PC which has AC97 sound drivers (S755MAX Motherboard). All the mixers are fine and I have tested all the my headphones, seems like there is no right side sound signal.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new here, so I apologize in advance for any mistakes I'm sure to make (if I'm even indeed in the right place).

First off, the issue is that randomly my center speaker on my LTB HSMT-UD True 5.1 USB Headphones decided not to work as of today. I noticed when all the sound was in place with the exception of the voices being muted. Here's a link to the headphones that I bought:

Now normally I would chalk this up to being broken, however it interestingly decided to work for a few minutes. Unfortunately, the fix was only temporary. However, something is very strange and that's why I bring it up. If I do this in the speaker setup:

There's a very faint noise for the test. But if I turn it off like so:

Then test it, It's crystal clear! Just like before! What in the world gives? Is there still hope? I've tried to update the driver, and uninstall and reinstall it to no avail.

Here are my computer specs if it's relevant:

Processor AMD Athlon II 620 Quad-Core Processor
Memory (RAM) 6GB
Type of Memory DDR3
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Video Graphics nVidia GeForce 9100
Audio CODEC: Realtek ALC888S
High Definition 8 channel audio
Supports one S/PDIF digital connection

I have a compaq running Windows XP. I use headphones frequently which work fine. The problem is that when I remove the headphones jack, the speakers don't work. I have to restart the computer with the headphone jack removed and then the speakers work again until I use the headphones again. Then the speakers don't work again and so on. How do I get it to automatically detect which audio output I want to use?

Answer:Switching to Speaker from Headphone issues

The Jack is probably going Wonky on you. I doubt that it would be a software issue, due to all the jack does is disconnect the circuit from the circuit path to the speakers. I would not doubt that it is a motherboard issue, or a soundcard issue if a desktop.

Ok so I finished my new PC, one of the main new parts in the motherboard, a Biostar hifi a85s3.  my older gtx 550 ti, and an AMD APU.  I have everything running well on it (this is posted from said PC) except for I can't get the sound on.  I installed realtek HD audio manager (came on the disk with the mobo) and tried clearing the CMOS afterwards, but windows troubleshooting just says that nothing is plugged in.  I have tried the audio ports on the board, as well as the ones hooked up on the front of the case.  Other than that I have no idea what's causing this or what to do about it.

Answer:Headphone/speaker does not appear to be plugged in to windows 7

I'd disconnect the front panel audio cable from location in attached pic and then see if the ports on the motherboard respond to headset attached to the rear of the computer. Some cases come with 2 plugs, one with a loop and the other without a loop. If you get your audio to respond when front panel audio cable is removed then, you know where the problem is, but if the problem remains then it could be a defective board. With Windows 7, I ran into driver feature issues with Windows 7 on a Biostar MCP6PB M2+, but this board was manufactured for 2000/XP/Vista. My problems with audio are that sound works fine but I have no microphone as well as although the HD Audio Panel that use to display on the screen when a device was added to allow selection for audio system or headset to be selected as the device that is plugged in no longer pops up when this motherboard is running on Windows 7. When it use to run on XP prior using the driver software off the CD that came with the motherboard everything worked including microphone. Biostar has no extended support for this board for Win 7 so I figured out which chipset I had for audio and manually installed a Windows 7 driver and this which should have fixed the microphone port, but it didnt.I installed the Windows XP hard drive back into this system and the MIC works still so the port isnt bad. Left the hard drive in there in case I ever need to run Windows XP, however I am running Windows 7   99.9% of the time. To fix my MIC... Read more

I was using my computer with headphones, then sound only started playing through 1 speaker. They work fine on everything else. I tried to restart my computer, but that didn't do anything. Is there any way to fix this?

Answer:Sounds only playing through 1 headphone speaker.

If I understand you correctly you had headphones plugged in and when you removed them only one speaker has sound. That sounds like a defective headphone jack. Disconnect the front panel headphone/Mic jack connection on the the motherboard and then see if both speakers are working. If they are that would confirm a problem with the front panel headphone jack.

On my C50 the sound is fine through the laptop speakers but when I plug in a jack to the headphone socket the sound only comes out through the right speaker. When you do a test of the IDTspeaker, you can hear both left and right sounds but both come from the right speaker (like its in mono). There is no headphone device appearing in the sound playback devices - looking at some fora it looks like there should be. I have reinstalled the idt driver from Toshiba site (2014). I have also used windows to get the latest sound driver but none of this helps. it did work before and seems to have gone wrong after a windows 8 update. Can anyone help please?

I've just purchase Y510P last week and I've noticed that left speaker cause a bit cracking/vibrating sound while right speaker is normal. So I try to find the cause of the problem and found that if I press my hand on/around the left speaker, the problem seem to be reduced but not go away. Other thing is that when I plugged in my headphone without playing any sound, there is quiet noise but heardable. So I wanna know whether this is common problem cause by design issue or it is only my Y510P problem, because if it common I don't want to waste my time trying to fix it or send it to repair.Thank You

Answer:Y510P Left speaker and noise in headphone

I also have this problem in the left speakers of my laptop. I have installed Win 7 and Ubuntu (Dual Boot) and experienced this problem in both the operating systems. So this seems to be a hardware issue!   Thanks,Karthikeya

My laptop model is HP Pavilion x360 - 13-s101tu. Date of Purchase is November-end 2015. Speakers : Bang & Olufsen Part 1- The speakers of my laptop are producing low volumes even at moderate levels. For example, whenever I play a song or a movie or any audio based program, a lower level of 15 to 25 should produce an audible sound but the sound is hardly audible at around 15 and bit audible at around 25. When increased to 40 (at least) the sound becomes audible up to a normally acceptable level. Anything beyond that starts to get loud. I have observed this "issue" since the date of purchase. The laptop is still under warranty. The possibilities I can think of are either the speakers have been tuned by HP in that manner for this product or the speakers do have a problem. Part 2- When I connect a headphone or an earphone to the laptop the sound comes out muffled, suppressed and so low that audibility is almost zero, it doesn't matter if the volume level of the laptop is high. Plus, there are grains in the audio, that is something like the one that is produced by a TV when there is no channel. When I try to rotate and adjust the Phone Connector of the headphone or earphone, at one particular point the audio becomes clear, audible and there is no muffling. Though I have downloaded Real Player, and there is Films and TV app of Microsoft, I use VLC Media Player to watch video contents and Windows Media Player for audio contents such as songs. Another pro... Hi all,

When I plug in my headphones, my laptop's built-in speaker continues to have sounds coming out from it. Is there a way to work around this?

Answer:Sound coming out from speaker and headphone at the same time.

What audio do you have?

If Realtek, for example, go into Windows Control Panel and look for Realtek Control Panel. There are various settings that can be changed.

Ok, so been using a dell XPS 13 2015 edition for about a month now.
An hour ago I tried playing some music and it wasn't playing. This led me to clicking the volume icon in the system tray and the following popped up: . Sometimes the "looking for errors" screen turns up instead, and it find something along the lines of "driver malfunctioning". I don't know the specific drivers for my sound card. Anyone suggesting something?

Answer:No sound: plug in the speaker, headset, or headphone

Open device manager, right click on the audio device, click uninstall, tick the box to remove drivers. Let that uninstall.

Download and install this driver: Dell XPS 13 2015 Audio Driver (Win 8.1 x64)
