Random keys on my Acer S7 stopped working

Question: Random keys on my Acer S7 stopped working

Just yesterday, several keys stopped working on my Acer Aspire s7. I have to bring up the touch screen keyboard to get them to work. They are 5,7,9,-, and a capitol D. Weirdly, the lower case d works. None of the special characters above the malfunctioning numbers work. There wasn't any spill that I know of, but it's certainly possible water got on it somehow. Has anyone had this problem? Does it sound mechanical, IE water or some other kind of damage, or does it sound potentially like some kind of virus? And in the more likely scenario that it IS a water or dirt issue, does anyone know what kind of solution might be possible? Can the keys be easily removed and cleaned? I did already try the compressed air keyboard thing. Any help or ideas are hugely appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Random keys on my Acer S7 stopped working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Random keys on my Acer S7 stopped working

I should also add- when I start up the computer, the password box is full of the black dots as if a key is stuck.Any advice would be hugely appreciated! Thanks guys!

Howdy and welcome. I've removed your email address, as posting that on an open forum is a great way to get signed up for spam. I'm also going to move this to hardware, as it's definitely not a networking issue.

Have you given any thought that the keyboard is now broken?

Hi,I had to post this question because non of the solutions available on the internet worked for me. Some weeks ago, my FN + Function Keys stopped working on my HP ProBook 4540s. For example, FN + F7 = MUTE.I had updated all of my drivers, including the HP Hotkey Support driver for my laptop's model (even reinstalled); ran Keyboard Diagnostics in UEFI, everything was fine. I then decided to remap some of my keyboard keys to check if there was really a problem with my Windows and found out tthere was. Even after remapping, these combinationes weren't working. I thought to give it a try here in the forums before getting my laptopp serviced, I really don't think I need to do it because I believe there is some problem in the software like some option for this is disabled. But action keys was not even in the BIOS as others had (my BIOS was updated). Functions keys (F1-F12) were working, FN was working too but combinations aren't woking.  Hope someone helps me out,HDash_Tech

Last night after watching a film on "Catch-up TV" I started sending an e-mail, and part way through I noticed that the "A" key had stopped working, then the "W", quickly followed by the "1" key.Thinking that it may be a heat related problem, I quickly finished my message avoiding these keys, lol and shut down.Today, sadly the problem persists.I recall reading a post recently where someone else had a similar problem, and thought it was a virus, but I can't find it now. There was an explanation regarding the relationship of certain keys to different cores of the keyboard ribbon cable. Can anyone advise me??

Answer:Laptop: three keys just stopped working - Help!

Is this a laptop? In my recent experience of this on a laptop the keys you mention are all in the same zone and a replacement keyboard cured the problem. However a post earlier this week about something similar turned out to be detritus under the keys. Cured by gently cleaning with a small paint brush.

l was typing a document yesterday and then suddenly the enter key stopped working closely followed by the "t, i, o, g, :, and UP keys.

Any idea what has caused this and how I can fix it? [trying to avoid buying a new keyboard... laptop user... sony vaio - vgn/c1z.]

Thanks.

Answer:Certain keys suddenly stopped working

Boot into safe mode or command prompt.

See if keyboard works. Or even in BIOS and see if the UP key works. Make sure its not a software issue (virus). if those keys still don't work... you have 2 choices:

1 - Buy a USB keyboard for $10~25 (cheap and easy)
2 - Order a new keyboard from SONY and install it yourself of pay a tech. Most likely will require taking apart the notebook.

A friend of mine is using #1.

I have a Toshiba Satillite laptop running Windows 8 which I use for storing, recording and playing back music. Everything worked fine until a few weeks ago when the volume keys on the keyboard stopped working. I still get sound at whatever level is set and I can adjust the volume if I access the sound control slider, but the two volume keys have stopped working.

I saw some advice on a Microsoft web page saying if there were sound problems to change the setting in the 'Human Interface Device from Manual to Automatic which I did but it made no difference.

Can you advise me please.

Answer:Volume Keys stopped working

Too bad that you waited this long. A System Restore back to a date when it did work probably would have taken care of it. As its been several weeks, its too long to fall back.

One thing that worked on a user with a desktop was to uninstall the keyboard in the Device Manager, then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the keyboard. However, if you have a log on password, this will not work.

I cannot find a keyboard related software or driver for your laptop. I will research the issue more.

Obviously it just does not want you searching for asus or azuz (which would be changed in google to "did you mean asus?") laptops for a replacement

Both Ctrl keys on my laptop have stopped working.  I first noticed the problem while writing a letter, and figured the problem had something to do with the word processor.  Later, when I needed to hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete I realized the Crtl keys were simply not working.  My first hunch was that this was a software problem, but that theory has fizzled.  For example, I wondered if I needed to update BIOS, but that turns out not to be the case.  My wife's hunch is that something is physically impeding contact, but I don't see how that would affect both keys at the same time.  I ran this problem past the IT guy in my office.  His hunch is that it's a software issue, but doesn't know what it could be.  Using PC-Doctor 5, I ran a keyboard interactive test, which confirmed that the Ctrl keys don't work, but didn't shed any light on the problem.  Finally, I happened to plug in an external keyboard, which I had gotten out of the habit of using, and the Ctrl keys on that keyboard work fine, which seems to me to point away from software as the culprit, though my IT guy still thinks it's most likely a software issue.  Any ideas?

Answer:some top number keys stopped working

Try a USB keyboard to verify it's the the keyboard and not software. If the USB keyboard works  then you probably have a defective keyboard. If you are still in warranty call Acer for warranty repair or call your local shop for price.

I have had the Microsoft wireless comfort keyboard 4000 for quite some time and it worked just fine. I upgraded to Vista 64 and now the previous track, next track, pause/play and stop buttons do not work unless that particular program is active on the screen. When I had XP, I could use these button s to control iTunes and Rhapsody from any program. That is the whole point right, so you don't have to switch back to iTunes or Rhapsody every time you want to change the song.

Everything else works just fine. What it the problem here. It is driving me crazy to have to switch to the program every time I want to use one of these buttons.

Many thanks,
Houston

Hi,

I have a Portege R500 laptop and suddenly the fn keys stopped working. I have looked for drivers off the Toshiba website but have had no luck and also tried re-installing the Common Modules (i just re-installed it, is there any need to uninstall anything before hand?).

The OS I use is XP SP2. I have tried a system restore and do not really want to do a complete system restore.

Basically i'd just like to get them working again.

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Matt

Answer:Re: Portege R500 - FN Keys stopped working

Hi

The Common Modules should be reinstalled too, but it would be also necessary to reinstall the Hotkey Utilities for Display Devices.

By the way; You should clean the registry using the free program called CCleaner.
You can download it from many websites. Google simply?

Then after the usage of this applications reinstall the Common Modules and the Hotkey Utilities for Display Devices.

Bye

I have a weird problem. I use Coreldraw X3. Everything was fine until I installed a new Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 v1.0. Now all of my shortcut keys won't work in Coreldraw. I have tried to uninstall the drivers. No good. Tried using a different set of keyboard shortcuts in the keyboard software, no good. Tried redefining keyboard shortcuts in Coreldraw, no good. Changed back to my old keyboard, everything's okay. It's they keyboard. This keyboard is USB, but I can't see how that would be a problem. (Old keyboard is serial)
Any ideas on how I can use my new keyboard and get my shortcut keys to work in Coreldraw?

Hello! So my notebook has a lovely function key line-up that lets me adjust screen brightness, turn the backlight on the keyboard, mute and adjust volume, pause/play/fast-forward/rewind, and turn the wi-fi on and off. I have never had a problem with these keys and use them all the time, but they all randomly stopped working a few days ago. I've tried pressing them in combination with the fn key, but they still don't work. And when I do press them, it seems like they are doing other stuff (for example, if I press f6/mute, the content of the google search/address  bar will become highlighted).  I thought maybe my cat stepped on some combo that turned the function keys off, but I haven't been able to find anything under "settings" that would allow me to turn them back on. I did the BIOS thing - they were already enabled in there, so I disabled, restarted, tried the keys with no luck, shut down, enabled, restarted, and they still don't work.  I've been browsing the forums and downloading drivers that people have posted, but that hasn't helped.  I've gone into the device manager and made sure my keyboard and monitor drivers are up to date.  I've tried going through HP support for updated drivers, however Windows 10 isn't an option for my notebook, only Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, and neither of those had a hotkeys support driver option anyway. And before you ask, I've been running Windows 10 for a long time now without any trou... Read more

I have had my Z570 for a little over a year and a half, and after coming home from dinner tonight (the laptop was left running during this time) I discovered that my computer had a few new issues. The most pressing of them being that now neither the main nor the numpad Enter keys respond in any way. Additionally, the tracpad occasionally stops working for around a minute at a time, and I have had at least two or three instances of the computer acting as though the down arrow was being held (twice on the internet, once on the boot menu when restarting the computer). As far as I can tell, all other keys are behaving normally. As an indication, my keyboard has worked well enough for me to type this post, but I had to borrow a wireless keyboard in order to add spaces and complete the post..

Answer:Both Enter keys randomly stopped working.

Hi I have a HP Laptop it?s but with newish software running vista. Its all been working fine form about a year or so. The other day some of the keys stopped working, I have not dropped it or spilled anything on it. I turned it and when I tried to go back in to it, it came up with the black BIOS screen. However as the keys were not working it would not let me select anything (i.e safe mode) it times down to open in the already highlighted section which was rum window as normal (or something like that) it then gave a blue screen and said it was doing a crash dump. After this it went back to the black BIOS screen and repeated the whole thing. Its stuck in some sort of loop. I don?t have any disks to reinstall what can I do???

Answer:Laptop keys stopped working and now I can use BIOS

I'm going to have your thread moved to a more appropriate hardware forum. Consider the possibility tat the keyboard may be defective and you may have to replace it. That is no problem- I just replaced mine.

Hi Everyone,

Some of my keys on my laptop keyboard have stopped working suddenly. I'm not sure if i've accidently pressed something or if it's something to do with the FN keys but i'd love some help if anyone might be able to!
Keys not working:

Question mark and forward slash key
the last letter of the alphabet key
the arrow keys
and the 0 on the right hand side numbers pad

Does that sound like something to do with some settings or is my keyboard malfunctioning

Thank you in advance for help!! :)

Answer:Certain keys on keyboard have stopped working suddenly

I cannot say for sure but I think it has nothing to do with settings. It is not known to me that there is some option where you can disable some keyboard keys.
To be honest I think it is keyboard malfunction.

> the arrow keys
Enter BIOS settings and check if these keys work in BIOS.

So, randomly one day, I turned on my laptop and couldn't log in, because a lot of my keys weren't working. The keys are:  4, 7, =, q, w, e, r, u, i, o, p, [, a, s, d, k, l, ;, and some other keys like delete.  I've tried setting bios settings to default, tried updating bios to the latest. Tried the "removing the battery" trick, tried removing hp support assistance, tried uninstalling keyboards (including hidden) via device manager, and tried installing pretty much every driver on the HP website.  USB keyboard works, but it's not an ideal fix. Would really appreciate any help that can be offered please.  Thank you!

My y570 is now a year old, and the softkeys stopped working suddenly. I cant mute, raise the volume, or adjust the other settings at the top which deal with the media and fan speed. The FN key options work fine. I was looking around online for a solution but all i'm coming across are forums talking about synaptics drivers and what not. However, when i look into that driver, it seems it is only for the touchpad. Does it also correspond with the soft keys? It would help a great deal if someone can provide a solution for me. I am unsure whether this issue has been solved already or not.

Hi, I've had my P500 for about 1 1/2 years, and it was working perfectly, until recently, when all of a sudden my Caps Lock, F1 (also the mute key), 2, s, w, and x keys stopped working. I've never spilled water on it, and never let it bump into anything. I feel like it's a connection problem inside the keyboard, but have no idea what to do. Any ideas on how to tackle this issue?

Answer:Lenovo P500 Keys stopped working

Hi Tahmeed704,

The problem keys are on a series row (2wsx)
This prettymuch seem like a hardware problem,
Verify this by opening an Onscreen keyboard and check if the Onscreen keyboard are working with those keys
How to Open Onscreen Keyboard ( Press WIndows key + R and type in OSK)

If Verified Hardware Issue,
You can refer to this System's Maintenance Manual on how to access the Keyboard connection

My wife's Acer laptop (Windows 10) recently started having issues with some random keys not working. I tried reinstalling the keyboard drivers (had to settle for the Microsoft ones as I did not see keyboard drivers on the Acer web site), rebooting, etc., and they still do not work. So, I am looking for a replacement keyboard. Does anyone know the best place to purchase one? Any suggestions for fixing it would be helpful.

Hi All, I am using a t440s laptop and we can call it brand new (using for 3 months so far). I woke up this morning and some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working.

Im nearly 100% sure it isnt a faulty keyboard but rather a virus or something that is remapping my keyboard. The keyboard has been working fine up until today when the f, y, m, and ' keys stopped working all at once. Nothing spilled on the keyboard.. nothing like that. Ive tried a system restore but it didnt solve anything.

I tried to do some research on my own, but didnt find much.. one guy had the same problem, but I didnt see any concrete fixes.

One thing that makes me think its a remapping problem is that when i hold down the f, m, y, and ' keys and hit x, the return is " \eqx ". Holding different combos of the keys that arent working yields different results, but results nonetheless, and since theres some sort of return when i hit the keys, i assume they still work but something on the computer happened. The other person who had this issue that I found gave me the idea of holding down the keys and hitting x, since he did it and had the same results.

Is there a known virus that I may have? Any way to restore the key set/map to factory defaults? Anyone have any idea whats going on here?

Thanks

Answer:Lenovo T400 keys stopped working

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that a few keys in the keypad of your Lenovo ThinkPad T400 is not working properly.

Check if the keys are working in different applications. Some keys such as the function keys F1 through F12 will not work with every program. An easy way to test this is to open notepad or other word processing program and trying the key. Try getting into safe mode and see if the keys work. Remove the key from the keyboard and clean it. In some situations dirt, hair, dust, etc. can obstruct keys causing them not to work.

Please try to get into BIOS mode and see if the keyboard is working there. Tap F1 key while system shows the Lenovo logo to get into BIOS.

1. If you are able to use the keyboard in BIOS, it could be a software issue. I would recommend in that case to do a System Restore which will revert the settings in your system to a previous time.
2. If keyboard doesn?t respond in BIOS as well, probably it?s a hardware failure and keyboard has to be replaced.

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I've got z510 since Christmas and I've bought it as a plain PC.After installing Win 8.1 everything seemed fine, however the three sound-operating keys stopped working after few weeks. At first, they were sometimes working and sometimes not, but now they don't work at all. It's not a hardware fault, since usage of the F1 - F3 via the Fn key works allright. Thaks for help.

Answer:Sound keys stopped working on z510

hi Diskopanda,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to verify, was the machine preloaded with Windows 8 and you upgraded to Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft Store?

If this is the case, there are limitations found during testing of Windows« 8.1 on supported Ideapad systems as per the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Guide by Lenovo and it's possible that there are incompatible Windows 8 softwares/drivers that caused the issue.

Things that you can try:
1. Press Windows key+R, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter. On the list of installed programs, look for Lenovo Energy Management and the Realtek Audio Driver (Windows 8 versions) and uninstall it (reboot if necessary).

2. Install the Realtek Audio Driver below for Windows 8.1 and observe if you can now mute, decrease and increase the volume using the   keys.

Hello to everyone,

Everything started a month ago or so.
My laptop (a Toshiba Satellite P850-12Z) keyboard started to fail. First was the backspace key, but afterwards was the numpad 3 key, and the enter key.

They start working if I hit them repeatedly around 10 seconds or so. You can imagine that this is very annoying and frustrating.

Do I need a new keyboard? For more information, the keyboard also fails in linux.

In case I need a new keyboard I think that Toshiba has very poor quality, and I will never buy again a Toshiba Laptop.

My last laptop was from another brand and the keyboard never failed in 5 years.

Answer:Satellite P850-12Z - Several keyboard keys stopped working

> Do I need a new keyboard?

Probably yes.
Connect external keyboard and check if its working properly.

If the external USB keyboard would work, then there is no problem with the keyboard controller but with internal keyboard.

Any ideas on how to restore then? Thanks

Answer:Satellite R630 - Special keys stopped working

Hey,

Why you have removed the software? I mean Toshiba install all necessary drivers and tools that you can use your properly with all functions easy. So why you remove the Toshiba tools?

Anyway, you need Toshiba Value Added Package and Flash Cards Support Utility. Both tools control the FN keys where you can turn off WLAN, touchpad, etc.

Everything what you need you can find here:

Basic: OS = Windows 7 Pro; computer is a Toshiba Satellite L70-A
Yesterday, I had numerous working shortcuts to shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+G to start GoogleEarth). This morning, after seeing an error message related to APO3GUI, and finding it related to DTS sound, I un-checked the DTS Studio Sound in the startup tab of System Configuration, and restarted the computer. I had not, prior to that, attempted to use any shortcut keys. However, after the restart, I found my shortcut keys had all "died." Subsequently, in my attempts to get them working again, I have done the following, in order, with restarts between each one, to no avail:

1. Re-enabled DTS Studio Sound in System Configuration.
2. Checked Windows updates and saw two Windows Security updates, KB 3212646 and KB3207752, showed as having been installed today (1/12). Uninstalled both from Windows Update.
3. Ran System File Checker -- no issues found.
4. Un-assigned and reassigned a shortcut combination.
5. Started in SAFE mode.
6. Started from "Last Known Good Configuration".
7. Did System Restore back two days.

I'm out of ideas!

P.S. -- wasn't sure which forum this would be better in, so here by default.

Answer:Portege R500 - ctrl keys have stopped working

Hi

Any key combination which would disable the CTRL buttons is not known to me.
But I recommend checking the common keyboard options like FN+F10, FN+F11, FN+F12, Capslock, etc?

Furthermore you could test the notebook with an external USB keyboard.
If the CTRL buttons would work using external keyboard, then this issue would be related to hardware problem.

Hello,
Some of my multimedia keys have stopped working. The Browser key works fine, but the play/pause, stop etc. buttons don't work. They used to work a while ago but now... I am runing Windows XP 32bit. Can someone help?

Answer:Satellite A200-1ZF Multimedia Keys stopped working

Hi

The machine Sat A200-1ZF belongs to the PSAE6E series.
There is a driver or tool on the Toshiba European driver page which is needed, to get the Toshiba Controls buttons working again!

You need to download the Controls 2.48.2.2C.
Remove the old utility from the OS and reinstall the new application.

shortbread1,
Product not tested for Windows 10 upgrade
Dell is not testing or developing Windows 10 drivers for this product. If you choose to upgrade, some features, applications, and connected devices may not work as expected.
The computer needs Windows 10 drivers for the hardware to work properly. Dell did not create any Windows 10 drivers for the Inspiron n5010

Tecra A8 - Fn + F6/F7 keys for brightness adjustment have stopped working. Also my volume adjustment dial works but the pop up level indicator has stopped appearing.

Answer:Tecra A8 - Fn+F6/F7 keys for brightness adjustment have stopped working

Hi

Can you please tell us what OS you have?

Normally if the FN keys stop working you should try reinstalling Toshiba Value Added Package. This controls the FN keys and other special functions and in my case reinstalling this package worked.

You can download it here:

Hello,

My G, H, apostrophe and backspace keys suddenly stopped working on my keyboard. I do not think this is a physical issue, because it happened suddenly with just these keys, and I have seen upon Google searching that others have had a problem with the exact same combination of keys suddenly not working. Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall system and lose my Microsoft Office and other installed programs? (I have an HP notebook with Windows 10, by the way).

I have tried ejecting battery and unplugging cable and holding down Start button, but it didn't work. The onscreen keyboard works, but it's a pain to have to use. I know I could buy an external keyboard, but I'd prefer to fix this problem if I can.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, within 3 months of purchasing the leveno ideal pad z570, a number of the number keys stopped working. Now only qwertyuiopgh#zxcvbnm,./56 work, to use the other numbers and letters I have to use to use the in screen key pad. I also have to say the online help / phone help is not that great as it seems you can only call between 9-6, not super helpful for those that have bought for home use and work full time! Has anyone else had this problem and know how to fix? Mant thanks
