Acer laptop LEFT side Screen hinge Problem

Question: Acer laptop LEFT side Screen hinge Problem

Good Afternoon, I recently bought became an acer user after I found this Aspire laptop that had everything that I wanted at a reasonable price. But after just a couple years the left side near the adapter plug in began to crackle everytime the screen was open and closed, slowly on the same side the plasitic became more and more separated, until recently this was not a major issue but as time wore on that small gap has become so wide it seperates the whole computer in two causing my the port that the power cord is connected to has fallen deep inside the laptop. As I begin to research this problem I came to find that this was something that has happened to almost every acer laptop no matter the price or type, now my question is since this is a manufacturers problem shouldnt ACER fix this issue without any cost to the customer since it is something that should have been fix in design phase? I find this perplexing because I have owned other laptops that I have droped (I have never dropped this one) that has NEVER split open. PS if you do not believe me research for yourself. most of these malfunction happen before a years usage

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Acer laptop LEFT side Screen hinge Problem

Hi, It is unfortunate to hear about the issues you're having with your case and opening the lid to your laptop. I would recommend having the machine serviced.

I can assure you that a far larger portion of Acer laptops do not have this issue. A lot of research, time and developement go into the area around the hinges to minimize issues, but laptops have had these issues for 20+ years. The hinge is a common component that produces a lot of stress. While we do measure ourselves to others, a quick google search replacing Acer for another manufacture is sure to produce the same results.

So i had repaired it by spending almost 4000rs and by changing bottom cover. After few days same issue again arrise and hinge where broken. This computer has never been out of the house or abused in any way. This appears to be a common Acer problem and seems to me Acer needs to step up for people like me and provide a repair. The left hinge on my laptop has come apart and it's affecting the screen display. I have had my laptop for only 2/3 years and had no problems but it's frustrating it's happening now because I'm in the middle of exams. I have searched this thread and people have had similar problems. After a couple of seconds the screen starts turning white and I have to physically push down the left side to get any response. Is there any way this can be resolved?

Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

Hello, I bought an Acer Aspire R15 with Windows 10 from Best Buy in mid-June 2016. I just noticed today that the left side hinge is stuck at a 180 degree angle, so that my screen looks lopsided. (I think I have once, just to see that it really will do this, turned it into tablet mode from laptop mode, and back again, so it isn't as though I have been swinging it around willy-nilly!) Anyway, I have tried to free it up but daren't apply pressure as I am afraid of breaking the case, or the display, or the hinge itself! Any ideas, anyone out there? Please? Thanks in advance!

Has anyone else seen this problem.   I've had two laptops and nearly 14 months (4 months after warranty expiration), the left hinge plastic bezel has cracked.  I suspect this is a universal problem as I've met with other laptop owners who have experienced the same thing at nearly the same time....just after warranty expiration.
I know that in nearly all manufacturers of laptops that this is occurring and oddly nearly all are the left hinge bezel/plastic.  HP customers, I believe, have launched a class action lawsuit.

Is there a class action lawsuit against Dell for this same problem?  It sounds like all manufacturers are getting their laptop hinge bezels from the same place. This is a problem that Dell needs to address...immediately.

Model:  HP Pavilion m6 Notebook PC 15".   Laptop used minimally and still in beautiful shape other than these noted issues:  Left hinge is broken away from plastic casing (see pic) and Right hinge is broken away from lid plastic (see pic).   From what I'm reading, it seems the plastic base, chassis, and possibly lid base and hinge need replaced.  Please let me know what HP is offering as far as replacement parts and repair.  This seems to be an ongoing issue with HP notebooks.  I've purchased a total of three HP notebook/laptops over the past four years so I'm very concerned about these issues and why HP has allowed it to continue for so long and across so many different models.  It seems to me the plastic used in making these parts does not have the tensile strength required in notebook/laptop use.  I would think this issue would've been corrected years ago and not have continued.  Please advise.  I do love all my HP laptops other than these issues.   Thank you.

Left hinge broke on my Acer laptop here on March 13, 2017, and when I tried to close my laptop not realizing the plastic had split it cracked my touch screen.  I called Acer to see if this issue had been addressed as a "known issue" that they would repair but it isn't.  I also asked if the newer laptops have addressed this problem and I could purchase one without worrying about it, but they would not comment on that and just said anything outside of 3 years isn't covered. A quick Google search has turned up this issue as fairly common and occuring anywhere from 6 months and beyond of ownership.  Can anyone tell me if the newer laptops they produce have this issue?  I can't see myself justifying buying a similar product with the exact same issue that Acer refuses to address when you have other options for which the hardware seems much more stable and the cost comparable.  Does anyone have any insight to this beyond what I've experienced?

Answer:Acer laptop 3.5 years old broken left hinge issue

>>>A quick Google search has turned up this issue as fairly common and occuring anywhere from 6 months and beyond of ownership. >>> Not common. But does happen to most brands in my experience. Especially when one is in the habit of regularly and often opening and closing the lid on stepping away from the machine. The other vulnerability from this habit are the conductor trace lines on the video ribbon cable which threads tightly thru the hinge area. The left side hinge on my touch enables Inspiron 15 (5558) is broken.  When I opened the device on my desk, it made a cracking sound and the case-lid seemed to seperate from the screen assembly. According to the tag on the bottom, it's under warranty until December 20th this year.  How do I go about getting this repaired?  I can not move the screen at this point.  I have it in an open position, but if I'm very gentle and use many hands, I could get it closed.  Any help would be appreciated.

I bought this laptop in November 2014. For the last few days I was hearing a click sound whenever I open the laptop. And today also I heard the click sound but while closing the laptop I found the right corner edge is popped open. I contacted Dell Support for this issue and explained them what happened. They told me that this is a damage happened on the laptop and I am not covered by accidental damage coverage. So I have to pay for this one to be fixed. I explained them that I’m using this laptop as everyone else does like opening a laptop to work on it and closing it when am done with my work. But no use, I was told this is beyond warranty I have to pay $160 and wait at least 12 working days to get it fixed.
As this problem has been faced by many customers and this is a manufacturing defect basically, dell should repair it for free.

Answer:Inspiron 5547 laptop right side hinge problem

I just spent $60 for a new upper and lower 5547 case which I will install myself; being that the laptop is out of warranty and I'm sort of adept at such things.  The problem is that of poor case design.  The hinge on the left side of the screen has a "leg" extending towards the front of the laptop that helps absorb the torque of the lid opening and closing.  The right side hinge has no such "leg" so that the screws that are embedded into the friction nuts in the plastic case work loose over time  and cause the hinge to detach from the body of the laptop.  Once detached, the right hinge acts as a pry-bar to open up the right side of the case just behind the ethernet port.  The hinges take quite a bit of force to move.  In preparation for the new case, I have loosened the nut at the ends of the hinge axles and cleaned and lubricated the hinges to allow for easier action while opening and closing the LCD lid.  This may be an ongoing maintenance issue with these hinges, as the mechanism is open to dust contamination causing increased torque over time in opening and closing the lid.  We'll see how this goes.

It is bad enough that Dell makes a product with a defect affecting many of their unuts (bad hinge design/manufacture), but then makes a statement that part is specifically not covered under any of their warranties.
C/mon Dell.  You created the problem, man-up to it.

Hi, I have just noticed that the metal covering the hinge on the left side of the keyboard near the speaker is warping, it looks like its bending due to the laptop being opened.. Surely this is right is it? I have called the vendor who advised me that the issue was not a fault but merely cosmetic so it was not there problem and I should speak to the manufacturer.  Whilst is not a problem now it no doubt soon will be if the hinge breaks or the screen pulls away.  What can I do? It seems really hard to contract Lenovo UK and after googling a method of contacting them, all I found were endless forums sites about how people have problems with their customer service ..help? Is there anyone on this site who can help or anyone from Lenovo customer care in the UK? Cheers Scott

This is my first time ever posting on a forum, but I am having a problem on the left side of my 17 inch HP Envy. The left hinge seems to be forcing the bottom and top of the lab top to separate. When you open or close it makes the left corner of the lab top separate. Closing it makes the parts go back together. This started a couple days ago and already the computer is starting to go into thermal shutdown modes and some of the little vent covers are starting to fall off.  I have always had an HP computer and own two others but I?m really disappointed in this one.  It hasn?t lasted long enough to be worth the amount I paid. I have read several other threads that have people experiencing the same issues. What are my options to fix this or is this just wasted money? Any responses/help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

My left hinge has recently become visibly broken, with the top keyboard metal casing and the bottom black plastic casing becoming seperated near the hinge. I have also noticed the fan making rattling sounds as if broken pieces from the hinge have entered it. The right hinge also was slightly opening the case but tighting the screw on that side has kept that from reoccuring. Although I put in a new screw into the left hand side from enderneath the case, it has since fallen though into the casing or out completely due to the broken hinge part inside. I have seen many posts on here talking about a similar problem and many have been frustrated with the poor repsonse from HP who haven't wanted to repair the laptops for free in these cases, as this seems to be a design fault. I am no longer under warranty and do not have £100 + to fork out on a laptop which was roughly £800 RRP which is not even 2 years old due to a design fault. Is there any other way of repairing. Also, I had someobody look at this, and they say this can only be repaired with a new top case part number 720570-001.However, this isn't directly sold by HP at the moment, only through resellers and it seems that is roughly £180. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated as I am a student and tutor  and so I rely on this laptop very much and it is vital that it is working without issue at the moment as it is the middle of exam period. Regards,ARIA

So today I opened my acer aspire 5100 and i logged on to vista. And as i was getting started i noticed a small (width) yellow line which went top to bottom on the left. I thought something was wrong with the screen. So i emailed acer and that was not a big help. Now i have 3 lines that change colors and i am worried more will appear. Later on i applied presure and pushed left and they went away. But i am not sure how to keep it there. After i let go and the screen moved a little right and the lines appered. I think this is becuase something moved the screen right weather it was from a trip or something else. What can i do to get rid of the stripes or vertically adjust the laptop? Thanks Slamdunka

Answer:Laptop Screen, Strange lines down left side.

I'd let whoever sold it to you fix it - you talk about a trip but don't seem sure - if you can't remember doing anything that could have damaged the laptop I wouldn't be guessing while talking to them - warranties only cover it if it is the result of parts being defective.

Hi,
I recently bought my Dell XPS 9560. My dell xps screen appears cooler on the left side and slightly warmer on the right side. It is not noticeable in any color but when I visit websites with a white background like google, I can notice that the right side is slightly warmer (yellowish) which is distracting. Any idea on how should I proceed with the issue?
Thanks

Answer:Dell XPS 9560 Screen - left side cooler and right side warmer

If "recently" is less than 21 days from shipment and from Dell directly, the best option is to contact customer support and have the system replaced.
If it's more than 21 days from shipment, the warranty will cover the display replacement, which is the only solution -- though if the system is new enough, you're better off having it replaced than repaired.

Has anyone seen this before?
This seems to be happening more and more, I am using my PC (with Windows 8 Pro) as an HTPC and its connected via HDMI to a plasma TV so the PC is always on. Sometimes, when I go to use the pc I turn the TV on and then move the mouse around to turn the display on and I see the attached image, it looks as though the screen has shifted to the right and wrapped around to the other side.
I ran windows 7 with the same hardware on this setup for years without an issue. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

In both native Windows Applications and Internet Explorer Browser Windows, horizontal graphical lines appear to bend or slant up slightly, starting from approx. the middle of the line all the way to the left hand side of a horizontal graphical line.Questions:... Is this being caused by a Driver Issue or a hardware problem with my specifc NVS 140M video card that is built into my notebook pc's motherboard ???... Do I need to have my motherboard replaced to get another built-in video 140M card to resolve this issue --- or --- is this a known Driver Issue where an updated driver would resolve my bending of horizontal lines ???Anybody, else notice this problem besides me ??? FYI .... For example, take a look at the Google screen's horiz line drawn across the screen above the Google Logo, ... does it go UP on a slant towards the Left side of the Internet Explorer Browser Window for you, (starting from the middle of the line and looking from that point all the way to the left end of the line) ???

My Acer Aspire M left hinge is broken causing the screen as well as the computer to come apart. Any time I open or adjust the screen it cracks and breaks apart. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

My Acer Aspire E1-571G was bought 2 years ago and i took great care of it, the left corner started clicking and i noticed the cover lifting when i opened and closed the laptop. This has now resulted in something coming loose in the laptop and the cover now gapes when i open and close it. This is definitely a manufacturing fault and i have found out that others have the ACER laptops has the same problem. I cannot find a email address for ACER. How many others have this problem? Shouldn't ACER have recalled the laptops when they found out about this problem? What can i do to hold them accountable for this MANUFACTURING FAULT?

Answer:ACER ASPIRE E1-571G LEFT HINGE BROKEN

I am having the same issue with the same model, and there are a lot of reports from other models. The problem does seem to be getting progressively worst too. Originally it just clicked, now it seems to be pushing against the case in the corner and gradually separating it. Any advice on how to get this serviced or repaired would be great...

Hello all. I have been reading many horror stories about the left hinges of Acer laptops always breaking and unfortunately, the exact same problem as happened to me. At first, a slight pop sound occasionally happened when normally closing or opening the laptop. Now when I attempt to close it, the plastic casing around the LCD screen begins to split and the laptop is unable to close. Apparently this is a common Acer problem and I am so upset this is happening! I typically buy Acer laptops and I do not know what to do. Anyone with any advice? Thanks

Hi there - I have an Aspire V5 touchscreen - when I went to close the lid, the screen cracked and I spotted that the left hinge has come apart (risen and cracked the screen). Now the laptop wont work (touch screen is flashing, mouse doesnt work - exactly the same issue as the other posts on this forum). I see on this forum and google search that this is fairly common with Acer laptops (going back to 2010) and wondering why this wasnt fixed. Has there been a recall on this, does anyone know?  I see from a google search that HP fixed a design flaw on their laptops to stop this from happening once it was reported, several years ago (2008) (I wish I had known about this problem before I purchased). If you google that you'll get the information. I've only had my laptop a couple of years. I take excellent care of my laptops, and never had this issue. (I dont travel with it, and dont close the lid often - it sits stationary on my desk and is only 2 years old).   I've sent emails out to my friends working in technology this afternoon - and so far no one has ever had this issue although no one has Acer.  Its a huge inconvenience as I use this laptop for work.  So I'm just waiting to hear back from Acer.Any suggestions on getting this fixed or replaced asap?

I've been having a a problem with the back left corner hinge since October of last year I poisted to another board about this problem hving been told that this issue would be passed onto support in my region. I'm currious as to weather I'll hear from these people in this lifetime or the next. I enjoy my Laptop and would like to continue using it but as time goes on it keeps seperating more and more and I have to snap it back into place to keep in together. I'm hoping to actually hear back from someone this time that will be able to help me in fixing this issue.

Hi, I am hoping for assistance with repairing or replacing the screen hinge on the right side of my laptop.  When I open the screen I can see the actual laptop body splitting.  Looking inside the screw hole I can see broken black plastic and and hear something moving inside when opening/closing. The computer is only about 15 mo old, so it is out of warranty, but since it's my secondary laptop I would have expected something as basic as the hinge to last a lot longer than this!   Does anyone know if HP is able to send me a free replacement part that I can use to fix it myself? Thanks in advance,Matt

As long as nothing was spilled or the unit was dropped that would typically mean that the keyboard itself could be defective, the keyboard ribbon could be loose, or the motherboard could be defective. Depending on your level of expertise, you can check the ribbon cable to make sure it did not come loose from the motherboard, otherwise you might have to take the system to a local technician and see about getting some assistance.

I have a left screen hinge crack on my Z480. It catches when I open the lid and I fear it's going to get worse. This is actually the third problem I've had with the plastic on this computer, and from reading other discussions I don't think I'm alone. I tried calling tech support. My laptop is out of warranty but it's not 2 years old yet. I haven't dropped it. The guy pretty much told me what I expected to hear (that there's nothing to be done) and told me to take it to a local servicer but when I asked if he had a recommendation he said he "didn't know where I lived." I live in Cincinnati, OH and told him I could share that info with him but instead I got a lecture on the impermanence of material things. I would just really like to know my options and get any help from the manufacturer of this product.

Answer:left screen hinge crack

If you bought your computer with a credit card, call them up and ask if they offer free extended warranty on items purchased with their credit card. MOST credit cards doubles your warranty (at least 1 year past the initial year). However, the claim will need to be filed through the credit card company and needs to be covered under the basic warranty. Since you have "cosmetic damage" you will need to prove to the CC company that the issue is with the device construction. You can probably do so by digging up old post and sending them a faxed copy of all these posts.

Hello to you all,

I left the battery in an Acer laptop while I swapped out old memory modules and put in new ones. I think doing this may have damaged the laptop...I'm looking for some advice about this. I'm wanting to know if any of you think this laptop most definitely got “fried,” or maybe not.

It's an Acer TravelMate 4000 laptop with Windows XP. When new, it had 512 GB of memory/RAM (two 256 MB PC-2700 SoDIMM modules). I wanted to upgrade the RAM, so I found the Acer service manual for this laptop on the web. It said it can take up to 2 GB of PC-2700 200 pin RAM.

After I put the new memory in, the laptop wouldn't start up. When I press the power button, the cooling fan comes on and stays on for 5 seconds, then stops. Nothing at all appears on the screen...no Acer splash screen, no BIOS hardware information or anything.

I did some reading on the web about “how to upgrade memory on a laptop.” In one guy's tutorial/instructions, he says that if you don't remove a laptop's battery first before opening up the hardware covers and removing internal parts, the charge in the battery will “surge the laptop's hardware.”

After reading that, I took the battery out of the Acer. Then I swapped the memory again, taking out the new modules and putting the old ones back in. My thinking was that maybe there was some compatibility problem after all with the new memory. But after putting t... Read more

Answer:Acer laptop memory upgrade problem (left battery in...)

It's recommended that all power sources be removed before upgrading any computer. However if the laptop was off the risk of damage should be low. This is the same as for a desktop; when you turn it off there is still some power to the system until you unplug the power cord OR flip the power supply switch off.

Have you tried each one of the old sticks one at a time in each of the two slots?

Also try booting it with no RAM, then install the old RAM back in and try again, sometimes that can cause certain laptops to reset the CMOS, or so I've heard.

I've had my hp envy laptop for around 3 years, my husband bought it for me to do my MSc, and it has been used primarily for studying at my desk. I noticed the back left hinge coming apart a few months ago, and i had to physically push the laptop back together. I've always been really careful with it and don't understand how this happened. Now it's come apart so far the fan has failed and there is a warning message when i start it up advising me not to use the laptop without an operational fan. I'm essentially laptop less and am going back to do my phd in September. I really need the laptop for molecular modelling. I thought it was just bad luck until i saw the other posts advising this is a common problem with this make and model. I'm really disappointed as with the software and accessories bought on the day my husband spent around £900. For the amount of use it had before breaking, i feel like it was poor value for money. Can anyone advise me how I can get this fixed? I live on the Isle of Wight so i don't even think we have any local repair people ?

I purchased an Aspire V5 571P in September of 2013.  In July of 2014 one of the control buttons stopped working so I contacted Acer.  We set it up so that I would mail in the laptop.  Just a day or two before mailing it in, the screw at the left hinge fell out.  Rather than just screwing it back in myself, I mailed it in with a note asking that the laptop be looked at for both issues.  The laptop was returned with the screw back in, and the control key worked.  About ten days ago (in Jan. of 2016) I was shutting the laptop when I heard a loud "pop."  The shell of the laptop cracked under the left hinge, and the crack separates right at the hole where you plug in the adapter.  The screen is cracked.  Touch screen no longer functions.  Acer says it is out of warranty.  I purchased an extended warranty, but that company is saying that I dropped the laptop.  I did not drop the laptop.  Do I just need to buy a new laptop?  If I do, I will certainly be looking at other companies.  Does anyone know how much would this cost to fix?  I certainly expected this laptop to last more than 2 years.

Answer:Left Hinge Malfunctioned - V5 571P, Now the Screen...

I had the exact thing happen to my Aspire and the screen cracked too. I am surprised that there is not a recall on these because I did see when I was looking to ordering a new screen that to beware of this left hinge problem. So it is an ongoing problem with these laptops. You don't have to drop it for the screen to crack. I found the hinges and a screen on Amazon and have to find someone to repair the hinge and screen now.

I like many others have the whole case cracking issue on my Envy - yes it is out of warranty but I special ordered and spent a bundle so that I could get 5 years out of it not 2.  I tried to extend the warranty but that was a complete CLUSTER and never happened - I have lost my job and cannot afford a new computer and use it for my part time job.  This is a home computer and moves from my home office to my living room - rarely ever leaves the house and is in pristene condition.  Trouble with the answers in this forum is that they are all PM's, except for the ones who have described how to take the machine apart which I can't really risk doing on my own.  Like Dell, HP quality has gone down the toilet!!

Hello HP,

I am deeply concerned - I bought a 17" HP envy but less than a year since
, the laptop is coming apart at the bottom near the Hinge for the screen to the left. I am afraid to open it because it makes a "pop" sound every time I open the screen.

God knows I have been extra careful with this laptop. Yopu will not find a scratch on it from bangs or things like that but am deeply scared of this 1200$ piece falling apart not even a year into my using it.

Can someone please advise where to repair this from?? I am based in Uganda but will be travelling to San Francisco and Los Angeles soon.

Please advise, am beginning to lose faith in the machine, and brand..

Answer:17" HP Envy Coming apart at the left near screen hinge

Wow, my 15" HP Envy looks almost exactly the same and the hinge is no longer fixed.  I assumed the problem was because I found a screw under the laptop yesterday but when I tried to screw it back in it went through the housing and inside the computer.  Apparently the screw then caused a problem with the fan and I need a fix as well.  I spent several hours this morning being passed back and forth between the US and Slovak companies because I'm a US customer currently located in Slovakia and according the the support desk I need to put my laptop in a box and mail it to someone in the US if I want it fixed because somehow, and god knows how this is cost effective, the fan for a computer that's sold in the US is not available in Europe.  I'm sorry I don't have a better answer to your question, but my experience suggests you may not get service in the US unless you bought your laptop there and if someone from Support tells you they will service your computer you should check with multiple people.  The first Support person I talked to assured me the Slovak's would fix my fan when he told me to contact them, only to find out after being transferred 4 different times that in fact they won't.   I wish you good luck getting your laptop fixed and I'll let you know if I find any decent solutions but so far all I've been able to figure out is that its likely better to spend my har... Help,

I just purchased a new puter with windows 7. However the left side of the screen is cut off and I can't get to the windows there. How do i change the size or resolution of the home page..?

Rich

Answer:Left side of screen is cut off

First make sure the display resolution is set to the correct values for that particular monitor (the monitor has a "native" resolution and you need to set the display resolution to match that). Changing the resolution doesn't just change it for the "home page" (whatever that is?), it changes it for everything.

After setting the resolution to the correct values, any further adjutments to picture size that are needed can be made with the monitor's own height and width adjustment controls (usually via an on-screen menu system in conjuction with the monitor's buttons).

I have an Inspiron 5545 running win10.
On opening, the right side hinge on the keyboard section pulled three screws and inserts free, cracked the plastic in the corner where the hinge is located, killed the WiFi, and caused an intermittent vertical line to appear on the screen.
The laptop has never been out of  the house, never dropped, and seldom left my lap when I was home.
It runs, but is held together with aa 1.5" black paper clamp and connects to the home network via a USB WiFi dongle from Wal-Mart..
This is my fourth or fifth laptop and the first to have the case fail.  This is a design failure in my opinion.  Boo on you, Dell.  I've bought a lot of your computers over the years because they worked and did not fall apart with normal use.  This one disappoints.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 5545. From the first day I lifted the screen of the laptop, there was a click from the right side where the hinge of the screen meets the base of the laptop. I just assumed this was something internally that kept the screen in the open position because there are so many other items click when you open them. However, over the past few weeks a gap started to appear that has become increasingly larger between what appears to be the bottom of the case and the top in that same place where the right hinge is.
C'mon Dell.  It is a design flaw and should be fixed as such.

My left hinge broke in such a way that I can't open my laptop without worrying that I'll completely break off the screen. The left hinge is now in a crooked orientation, which causes the immediate area above the hinge on the laptop lid to be cracked and lifted off. There is also a crack on the laptop lid above the right hinge similar to how the left hinge was before it broke. From my understanding, this hinge issue is a common problem with HP laptops. Since my laptop is out-of-warranty, I would like to get more information as to how to get this fixed.

Never been dropped or mishandled.    She went to open the cover and heard an unusual creak and when she closed it she heard a snap.  We bought ours on 2/8/16 so still under warranty.  Any one else have the same issue?  Online research shows that other models of Envy laptops having the same issue.

I have had my laptop for just over a year and I have never transported it anywhere, as I just leave it on my desk. However, when I opened up my laptop today, the left hinge came off loose. Now the left corner of the screen is very loose from the screen border. Would HP be able to fix it, even though the warranty for this laptop has just finished 2 months ago? I am concerned, because I haven't done anything to it and it was very sudden. I'm pretty sure that it's a manufacture fault and this is an issue. The product has become unfit for purpose, because I can't close it and take it with me anywhere now.  I would like to hear back from someone. Thanks

Hi everyone, I very recently bought a HP Zbook 15u G2 workstation laptop. Overall, I am very happy with it, however, the left hinge does creak a tiny bit  when you move the screen (e.g. open or close the screen) and there is a tiny bit of plastic that covers the hinge - if I push it, it makes a popping/creaking sound.  It is really annoying when you are as OCD as me, should I be concerned or just not fuss about it ? (I obviously have the long warranty so can return it to HP if need be) Thanks, any help is much appreciated.

I had purchased this laptop, HP Envy M6-1090ee in August 2012. Soon after my warranty expired, the left hinge of the laptop started cracked and the screen frame too were affected because of this. Since I had to move between countries for short periods, I couldn't do anything about it. Until June 2014, when I contacted the HP service centre. After quite a few discussions regarding this issue, they decide to repair it for me. The repair was done and the machine didn't have any issue for a year. After which the same issue started cropping up. I have a HP case ID no. for the last service, that was given for the last repair. Any assistance regarding this will be highly appreciated and of a great help. Thank youAlex Robert

I always thought that my V-5 571P felt chintzy, so I've always treated it gently.  It's only ever has been on a desk or in the living room streaming Netflix to the TV.  I was shocked when the mere act of closing it sent a long, muliple branched crack through the screen.  Apparently the LEFT hinge developed some weirdness and shifted allowing the bottom corner of the clamshell to bear against the corner of the screen as it was folded closed. If I had dropped the thing, I would have beat myself for being so stupid, but this laptop was ALWAYS handled with kid gloves.  For it to break in this manner is so unacceptable it is as if it were designed to fail in that manner. Checking this forum, I see that many others have had the same experience.  ACER's solution - lock the thread.  How's about repairing the laptops which suffered this unacceptable design flaw free of charge?  Isn't that what a reputable manufacturer does? Anyway, I have been forced to find a new laptop and ACER is the one name on my "Do Not Buy" list. Richard

I purchased a HP Pavillion G7-2246NR Laptop with a 17.3 inch screen from Office Depot on Nov. 26, 2012.

The computer worked great until about a month ago when the left hinge seemed to be coming loose.  All I use this computer for is to surf the net at night while we watch TV so it rarely gets used.

Now the hinge has completely came out of the case and it has apparently  caused damage to the power button.  The computer will not power up at all.

I certainly believe this computer that I rarely use should have lasted more than a year and a half.  Is there a recall or some sort of free repair for these clearly defective units?

Please contact me for a solution,
Sybil [Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums. I am sorry to inform you that your post has needed some editing to remove personal information.]

Answer:Broken Left hinge on HP Pavillion G7-2246NR 17.3 screen

Hello @SFKervin , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand the hinge has broken on your notebook and it no longer turns on. It's possible that the chassis has separated preventing the power button from making contact with the power button board below. The simplest solution would be to replace the hinge. You can find detailed instructions on how to replace the hinge here: HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide on page 57. You can order a replacement display hinge kit by searching the part number 682746-001 and the display hinge covers with part number 682747-001 (if needed) online from many retailers like Amazon, eBay, or the HP Part Surfer web store. Regarding any recalls you can see a list of active recalls for HP on the following website: Replacement programs and product recalls. Hopefully this helps!

Same porblem as all the others. The bottom left corner of the case has broken off leaving the hinge intact and hanging.  I see this is an HP QC issue as there are thousands of complaints yet few good resolutions posted..,

I've seen some similar posts for slightly older laptops, but I've got a hinge issue with my g7 2240us, bought in December 2014. The left hinge seems to have come loose, and a tab with a screw that is part of the hinge now pushes up on the casing of the laptop about half an inch high.  Not to mention the laptop will not fully close.  Any suggestions?

In 2012 my mother and I both purchased the HP Pavillion g7 17.3 in screen laptops at different times. She purchased hers from Office Depot and I purchased mine from Walmart. About 2 months ago her laptop stopped closing properly and we noticed that the left hinge had dislodged from its intended position. A few weeks later her screen started to go out as well. We replaced the top cover and fixed the hinge but the screen is still unresponsive.  Two days ago, I noticed that my laptop started having the same problem and I find it very odd that both computers purchased from different locations and same "Pavillion g7" have the same casing malfunction. I have done a lot of research on this issue and there have been quite a few people with the same issue with their computers. Why has there not been a recall on this issue or at least HP should offer customers replacement parts for the known problem. I am very disappointed because I have always had HP laptops and printers but if the quality of these products are like this now, I may have to switch to a different brand. I hope someone can figure out what is going on and help with this situation.  Thanks

the left side is extremely hot, almost burning hot, and it is also heating up the wooden desk which it is rested on. The only thing i have plugged in is a recharger, i have removed the battery because do not actually move my laptop around much so i just keep it on A/C. However, my laptop has never shut down, or nothing bad has happened even though its really hot, any thoughts on this, will it become a problem? And if so, how do i cool it?
Also, when my laptop is in hibernation, will all process be running? and also will it still be processing? I normally put my laptop on hibernation overnight.

Is wood the best surface for a laptop to be placed on or should i place something in between the laptop and the desk?
Thanks

Answer:Left side of laptop is EXTREMELY hot

Get a cooling pad, be sure the vents on the side are clean of dust. If you don't want a cooling pad, try lifting up your laptop on the back with whatever you have, a few inches does wonders. What type of temperatures are we getting? Get HWMonitor and post up a screenshot.

In hibernation, all your processes in memory are written to your HDD, and fully shut down. So no, in hibernation, your system wouldn't be doing anything.

Got a new W500 wuth WUXGA about a month ago and have never been happy with the screen brightness, its much dimmer than my old x61s or T61p. Now today I just realised that the entire left side about 2 inches from the edge is darker than the rest. On a white background it is obvious and becomes even more obvious as you lower the brightness. Are there any tools I can use to measure/test this?Has anyone else noticed this?Am I entitled to return this for a replacement screen under warranty? Any help is much appreciated!

Answer:W500 screen very dim on left side

I have the same problem.  My friend has the T61p, so I thought that that w500 would have a brighter.  NOPEIt's horable.  I can turn down the T61p to about 60%, and it is still brighter than the w500.The w500 viewing angle is nuch less than the T61p. There is a huge difference between the two, expecially when viewing them side  by side. Can the problem be related to the display card?  The T61p has nvidia, while the w500 has ati. Or did Lenove simple saved money, and gave us a crapy lcd screen.?

Just purchased U350 and experiencing the above. Wondering is there any solution to it? Anybody experiencing the same thing?

Answer:U350 - left side of the laptop becomes very hot due to the fan when laptop on constantly

Could you be more specific? Is it the fan that makes the laptop hot or what? Does the fan run all the time, or not at all?

Question: Left Hinge problem

We have purchase our HP Envy TS 15 from Costco online about 3 years ago. The warranty has expired. About couple of months ago I saw the left hinge seperating from the casing. It makes a clicking sound when the screen is closed/opened. I am not sure if may be getting worse. But today, not sure if this is related but I realized the battery was drained and although the computer was plugged, it was not charging.  After reading numerous other posts on this hinge issue, I wanted to see if HP can provide a path forward to resolve the issue and repair my computer. Thanks for your time, Alp
