Update BIOS in Linux

Question: Update BIOS in Linux

Hello. I recently noticed that I can't access BIOS through Keyboard Shortcuts like F2, F12, or any other, apparently due to an outdated BIOS. Is there any way to update the BIOS on Linux, or to get around this? PC: Acer Aspire V5-571GOS: Ubuntu 15.04

Preferred Solution: Update BIOS in Linux

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Update BIOS in Linux

I am not 100% sure this would work. IF you were using 8.1 or 10 I could give you another way to enter. I know you said that F2 didn't work. But here is an Idea I would like you to try..... Press and HOLD the F2 button then turn on your Laptop while holding the F2 Button and see if that helps you get into your bios. Then I would change your Bios to Lagecy from the UEFI James

Toshiba NB100
Memory 1GB - Kinston - KTT667D2/1G
Ubuntu 8.04 - Ubuntu Netbook Remix -CD from Toshiba
CD-rw/DVD-rw LG GE20 externel USB-drive
Keyboard differences

Hi,

I was very happy to buy my netbook from Toshiba.

First I configured the System ready - reaching the Ubuntu-desktop the first time and everything was fine. Then I navigated the menues and soon found "Aktualisierungsverwaltung" in German - should be "Updatemanagement" in English - and started. After that I had a slow system with, no soundcard and the later downloaded bios-udate 1.6 did not work too.

I bought the LG DVD-burner (~75US/~60Eur) and restored the system with the Ubunto Remix-DVD. That worked good and is done in about 10 minutes. I bought a Kingston memorymodule too and replaced the original one. The Kingston-modul works fine too.

After i had read the thread, that the BIOS-update doesn´t work after Ubuntu-update I tried it again and now I have a good working BIOS 1.6.

But I have still 2 faullts:

The "|" (pipe-symbol) is not as shown on the keyboard Fn+X - it is Fn+Alt+<.

The 151 Update-"pakets" still damage the System - I tried it out for 2 times doing nothing but restore, setting network and updating.

The new sound-driver 1.06 I found at Toshiba-Germany and Toshiba-France are dead links (404), the Toshiba help line will now fix this since 2 weeks and do not call back.

Any ideas?

Answer:How to update BIOS on Linux

BIOS updates for your notebook are provided in softpaq form for use in Windows only.  Some HP notebooks do have Linux BIOS upgrade support, but unfortunately yours is not one of them. If you want to update the BIOS, then you will have to install Windows. Any Windows version from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 will suffice. The BIOS updates are in the driver and software  download section of the support portal for the Probook 4440s notebook at the following URL.http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=5229487&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4158

Hi. I have a lenovo G50-80.The BIOS update aviable on the web site is a .exe file executable only on Windows systems. How can I update the BIOS under linux?

Answer:Bios Update under Linux

Tricky... The BIOS file is buried in the compressed (zipped) .exe file, is identified by the .ROM extension.  Obvioulsy running from a DOS prompt under Linux may not work with the "Windows" updater program as it may not have the ablity to interact with the EEPROM.

I would check with your Distro support team for a working Linux bios flasher that could read/use the Lenovo ROM but proceed carefully - if it fails to work you may end up with a very expensive door stop.

Hi,

I have only linux (antergos) on my Portage Z30-B-100, Does anybody know of any way to flash update bios?
Thanks

Answer:Portege Z30-B-100 update bios from linux

Hi

On the Toshiba EU driver page you can find only the win-based BIOS update version.
This means that BIOS can be updated from running system only and you need to run Windows OS in order to start the BIOS update procedure. Linux isn't supported in this case...

Here you can find the How to doc about the BIOS update

Ok, I have found and downloaded the BIOS update file from Toshiba, I've not been able to find any instructions as to how to properly apply the update.

For the Linux version, it's in the form of a .sh, however, it's not a standard shell script. Is this something to be just run from a command prompt? Anyone know or could someone point me to the documentation I don't seem to be able to find regarding this?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the answer

Answer:Satellite P100-437 - How to update BIOS on Linux?

Hi

First of all what notebook you have exactly?

Normally the BIOS can only be updated on Windows so you have to install Windows to update the BIOS. The point is that BIOS update is only possible on preinstalled OS and that?s not Linux. ;)

Alternative you can contact an authorized service provider. Maybe they can update the BIOS in DOS mode via bootable disk or floppy. It?s worth a try?

Hi all,

I have a 3 yo Toshiba Satellite A200-193 (PSAEC), bought in France, it was apparently not released in the US - or not under thos reference - because I can't find it in the Toshiba bios database. (I could post in a french forum but there is no such support :-/ )

The bios is a Phoenix,v1.30. This bios is known for having an inside bug, preventing unofficial and unpatched OS like linux to deal correctly with acpi (fan control in particular). The temperature is higher than it should be.

I tried to update my bios to 1.80 through the toshiba fr website, but I have and alert saying "This bios has to be used with Vista Only".
Okay, so this is purely scandalous considering specific OS instructions have NOTHING to do inside a bios, what are my options?

Has someone installed this BIOS? Did it end up correctly ?

Thanks a lot

Answer:Satellite A200-193 - BIOS update on Linux

Hi buddy,

Please don?t understand me wrong but Toshiba doesn?t provide any support for Linux. That means you have to search yourself for drivers or solutions and that?s the reason why BIOS update is only Windows Vista supported.

That means if you want to do this update you have to install the preinstalled OS from Toshiba, I think in this case Vista. Then you are able to update the BIOS.

my OS is Ubuntu 12.04 (but i have previously used Windows Vista, previous Ubuntu releases, and Fedora)

and i have a problem with the BIOS.

Is there any available download to make an update, or even downgrade? I d prefer the first version or at laest an old one, because i know it worked fine

Answer:Satellite A200-23Q - BIOS Update on Linux

Generally speaking Toshiba doesn't support Linux and BIOS update cannot be done under Linux. All offered BIOS updates are Windows versions and can be updated under running Windows operating system.

Out of curiosity but which kind of problem do you have with actual BIOS version?

Answer:Thin client t620 Linux BIOS update

John___Smith Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Sorry, but I don't have very good news for you ...THIS is the primary reason many folks retain dual-boot setups with both MS Windows and a Linux distro -- the apps that OEMs provide for updating BIOS only run in MS Windows, not in Linux. If you have an MS Windows box, you can install and run 7-Zip to uncompress the HP BIOS softpaq archives into the constituent files.  But then, you still need a BIOS flash utility to apply the updates, and HP does not supply one that runs in Linux.

Hello Sory for my very bad English I have a Lenovo 3000 G530, under Linux (Mandriva 2010 X86_64), and it works fine. My only "problem" is the system sound of charge battery (beep when plug/unplug adapter).... But in my Bios, no options for that. On the other hand, I've found an update Bios (http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_1350.html#) 0CCN52WW version (I actualy use 0CCN48WW). So 1 Can somebody tell me if the 0CCN52WW Biosmakes possible to disable system sounds alarms ? Hi there.

I manage an IT company, and some of our equipments are portege z930.

We use Linux as the main OS, and in order to use all HDD space, we've erased Windows partition.

How can I update BIOS from a Linux operative system? I asked in an official technichal support company, and they told me they use an special linux live CD handled by Toshiba.

I don't know if I can get this live cd somehow. If not, I'd like to know how to update our Bios without having to reinstall Windows OS.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Portege Z930: How to update BIOS having LINUX/UNIX OS

As far as I know on BIOS download page Toshiba offers Windows version only. Generally speaking Linux is not supported at all.
Try to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. Maybe they can obtain such special CD.

By the way: why you didn?t prepared machine (BIOS update) before you have started to install Linux?

Hello,

I want to change the following settings in my bios on my laptop Satelitte A110-180
* AHCI for SATA
* Disable IDE

But there are no such options.
So I thought maybe I have to update my bios.
I found the download page, but there are 2 options: Windows Vista or NOT Windows vista, but I want to dual boot windows 7 and linux.

Wich one I have to download, or is there an other option to change the settings?

Thank you!
Bart

Answer:Satelitte A110-180 - Update Bios for Windows 7 and Linux

Hi

Satellite A110 does not support such options (SATA AHCI).
The BIOS update will not help you!

Linux is not supported and therefore you will not find any special BIOS for Linux OS!

The both BIOS updates are for Win Vista or OS independent.
Therefore if you are using OS other as Vista then you should take the OS independent BIOS update!

But like mentioned above; both options will not appear after BIOS update!

Lenovo Releases BIOS Update to Allow Linux Installation on Windows 10 Devices

Back in September, complaints that reached the web (and even got confirmed by a supposed Lenovo official) claimed that installing Linux on a Yoga 900 was impossible because the operating system was blocked as part of a deal between Microsoft and Lenovo.

Both Microsoft and Lenovo denied that such an agreement existed, explaining that installing Linux was actually impossible because Windows 10 was running on a SSD locked in a proprietary RAID mode that could only be read by Redmond?s operating system.

And yet, following all this controversy Lenovo has released a new BIOS update for Yoga 900 that unlocks this proprietary RAID mode and allows the installation of Linux on the device.

?This BIOS creates an AHCI SATA Controller Mode selection to allow for the installation of the Linux operating system. This BIOS is NOT intended for use with machines running a Windows operation system,? the official changelog of the new BIOS version reads.

Drivers should allow Linux installation on any device
Lenovo confirmed from the very beginning that installation of Linux on its devices was possible with the right drivers, but the company didn?t say a single thing about updates that would be provided for the Yoga 900 Signature Edition.

?To improve system performance, Lenovo is leading an industry trend of adopting RAID on the SSDs in certain product configurations. Lenovo does not intentionally block cus... Read more

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... I just restored my x61 to original settings due to a problem with blue screens, and decided to update the BIOS right afterwards.  I followed the directions precisely and it installed all 21 of the individual components for this model.  I then shut down the computer and turned it back on this morning to continue loading software.  The system started with the fan running at high speed and stopped at the ThinkPad Screen.  However, nothing happened after pressing the ThinkVantage button and F1 or any other button for that matter.  I left it for a couple hours, but finally determined that I could not turn it off or do anything with the machine.  It just hung there.  I did finally remove the battery and replace it, and now there is no power registering when the machine is plugged in and it won't start. Is there something I can do to recover the system?  I suspect the answer is a board replacement.  The BIOS update failed in conjunction with something on my computer.  I am just 2 years into the warranty period in the US, so if I need to replace the board, what are the best options? Thanks for your help and comments....this is a very frustrating turn of events, since it is my work machine.

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers, I was told to stay away from this.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi there again!

Now with a new and weird matter.

We all know that old say... "If it is not break, don't fix it". And if you put it into more informatic terms, "specially if it is a BIOS".

Yes, we all know that the BIOS is something quite dellitate to handle. For some reason we normally feel like if we were handling something like nitro-glycerine, or some radioactive product. And this is because we all know what is being put in risk in that moment: our (or sometimes others) computer, the full system could end as dead as some pieces of metal, plastic, and wires.

Well. I passed through all of that more than ten times in my life, and only once it went wrong. But since that old motherboard was already dead, It was not important. But I allways was EXTREMELY care. I allways cross checked everything before doing anything, allways got a backup and a way to restore that backup... and allways did this in COMPAQ systems, that were prepared that way. Updating a BIOS was just about preparing a disk, turn on the PC with the disk in the diskette drive, and wait. And if you didn't like the results, you simply click "return to previus BIOS" and that was it... very nice. And easy.

Few days ago, a friend brought me a Toshiba Satellite 1410-604 to solve some issues that were driving him crazy. After removing an expired Norton Internet Security, install avast and scan, I found more than one hundred files infected with a wide variety of virus, malware, t... Read more

Answer:Satellite 1410-604 - BIOS update > Incorrect BIOS update in the web?

Hi Fenix,

wow... it tooked very long time to read your post....

Maybe I can help you.

The Bios in the Web is the right one. So you have downloaded the correct version of the Bios.

The Askiris you have used is from Toshiba America which has most times not the exact models as Toshiba Europe.
That should be the reason, why the readme does not contain the European modelname.

I would try to make a fresh Bios update using the traditional Bios update.

Copy the files to the diskette, put it into the FDD, press and hold the Tab key while power on the notebook.
After the notebook has shut down, press and hold the key on the left side of the space-bar while power on the notebook again and wait until it powers off again.

If your notebook does not power on anymore, maybe the RAM is defect?

So, if the use of the traditional Bios and/or changing the memory does not help and your notebook is still dead you should go to an ASP, but this will cost money.

I have my fourth Toshiba notebook now and I had never problems with the Bios updates.

The 1410 is very old I think, so before going to an ASP, I would buy a new one ;)

best regards,

Maurice

Hi, I'm running Fedora Linux on my Yoga 2 Pro with BIOS version 76cn31ww. The latest version is 76cn38ww, and I would like to upgrade. The upgrade system, however, appears to be available only for Windows. Is there an alternative way of upgrading my BIOS? (e.g. ThinkPad systems often provide a bootable ISO file). ThanksSøren

Answer:bios upgrade on linux

Google Windows 8 PE and burn it to a USB or CD and boot with that, then run the bios update. It's like a live-cd for windows.

My E5-471G has always had issues in BIOS, taking a while before letting me go onward, seems to be sped up by clicking keys on the keyboard.  Over the last several months, it's been taking longer and longer to get to the BIOS screen at all while turning the LCD on and off.  Since I have the original stock (factory) firmware for BIOS, I want to try upgrading. Sadly, I don't even have a copy of Windows to use the upgrade software provided on Acer's site.  How can I upgrade to 1.21 or 1.24?  Is there a boot disk I can use?  Can I upgrade using a Linux tool? I understand it might not fix my problem but I figured it's worth a try.

You can try creating a boot drive to MS-Dos on a standard thumb/usb drive, copy the BIOS file to a folder in the thumb/usb drive, then running the .exe BIOS file through DOS.Used to work for me on older machines all the time.  Otherwise if the .exe is only compatable with Windows, you will need to get the computer booted to Windows in order to perform the flash.

Hello to all,  First posting. I need a little help here please. I currently have Ubuntu Linux v8.04 installed. The current BIOS on this machine is v2.10-(for Windows). I recently purchased this laptop used, put a new 250GB HDD in it and installed Ubuntu. I'm confused about which BIOS and ECP update(s) I need for my ThinkPad T30-2367. The recommended BIOS version for Linux OS's is v2.02. The recommended ECP version is v1.07. Herein lies the problem; the Lenovo webpage for ECP v1.07 states "This version of Embedded Controller Program will only work with BIOS Version 2.08 or higher.". Lenovo's on site info relative to these recommendations is conflicting! Any advice about this conflict and what I can or should do about it?  Another issue/concern is my inability to estalish/configure my new wireless cardbuss network card. First I need to update the BIOS and ECP for Linux compatability, then I may need help with the wireless card configuration. The card is a 'TRENDnet TEW-421PC'. Linux compatability shows this card was installed and working on Ubuntu Any help on these matters will be appreciated.  Regards,Visible Spirit  PS: I have to leave today but I'll return later for any responses. Thanks.

Answer:NEED HELP with T30-2367 BIOS and ECP for Linux OS's

Welcome to the forum! I've ran both Mint and Mandriva on my last T30 with BIOS 2.10 and no issues whatsoever. I really can't be of much help with the wireless card though, but if you install Intel 2200BG it will work pretty well in most distros, and they're only $15 or so on eBay...  Hope this helps.

Hi, I've got a 3000 N200 and I'd like to perform a BIOS update. I've found the appropriate version at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67975, but that page only offers a tool to do the upload on Windows systems. As I only use Linux I cannot perform the upgrade with Windows tools. Is there a way to do this under Linux? E.g. using a tool which can boot off a floppy or a USB drive? Thanks!

You are not alone .... There is a section "Linux" in the forum, but I have never find any (simple) solution. Lenovo should provide a useful tool to flash its bios on any platform.

I'm strugling with hot CPU. Its temparture is aroung 60degree C(140degree F) in doing nothing. If i run heavy software then it gets so hot that it turns the computer off. I check the fan and heatsink and its clean and should work fine. I think maybe an BIOS-update changes fan-controll to work better, so i check my BIOS and it's F.04 that is very old.I check in HP Support and there is possible to download BIOS-update for Linux, but the version is even older than what i have(F.01). Under Win7 download there is a much newer version of BIOS.I tought its possible to update BIOS in BIOS using USB-memorystick, but i can't get it to work. Is there a way to trick/hack til Windows-package to work with Linux-version of updating BIOS?

Answer:Updating BIOS on laptop with Linux

Hi I would treat the BIOS as corrupt and follow the procedure to create a flash usb thumb drive to do it. So you probably already have the exe file  ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/71173.exe Now if you try and run it in WINE do you make any progress?  It takes thru to a box to create a flash drive for installing on another device, and you do this. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443485 is a place to start. Alternatively I would try a cheat and download and make a Windows 10 install DVD, and not install but go to the repair section and get into a command prompt and try and run the .exe from there to create a flash drive or hopefully let W10 install the bios. If in doubt please ask.

I upgraded the BIOS on my two X140e laptops because the original one (2.08, I believe) would not make WiFi signals available to either Ubuntu or Linux Mint live USB install keys. This, of course, makes it impossible to install Ubuntu or Mint on my machines. Upgrading to BIOS 2.13, the current version, did nothing to fix the problem. On the other hand, Windows and one other Linux distro work just fine; it is Ubuntu and Mint that are being singled out to prevent installation.I own four (4) Lenovo laptops. One of them runs Win 7 exclusively. A ThinkPad Edge E540 runs Win 7 and Mint 18.2 in dual-boot configuration. I was forced to also upgrade the BIOS on the E540 because of several bugs that affected the Mint OS. It took Lenovo years to fix that BIOS even though it knew well enough about the bugs because of numerous customer complaints. But at least I was able to get Mint installed. The X140e issue, however, is the straw that broke the camel's back. It is unacceptable that Lenovo continue this practice of shipping BIOSes that hamper and even blacklist Microsoft's main OS competitors. Lenovo's allegiance should be with its loyal customers, who pay the bills at Lenovo by purchasing their products. If Lenovo thinks that they must be subservient to Microsoft to the detriment of their customers, then it's time for the customers to discontinue their relationship with Lenovo. I am not going to buy another Lenovo product ever again. And I plan to share my bad experiences with other compu... Read more

Hello, I cannot enter my BIOS on a U310 no matter what I try, including soft/hard reboots, power plugin', Fn+F2, "holding B while powering on" combinations and other recommendations seen here or here. I guess I should mention that I do not need/want Windows to the point that I even do not know what kind of Windows came on my U310 when I bought it, so there is a GNU/Linux (Fedora 17) installed, and the only problem I had was sorted as I wrote here. I have been happily using my laptop without problems otherwise. My question is - how do I regain access to my BIOS now? As I already stated, I do not care that a "One key restore..." button does not work for me, or similar single button functionalities are not perfect, but being completely cut off from BIOS is a totally different set of problems.

Answer:U310 with linux cannot enter BIOS

Update: the only hope of functionality left for me in this situation is that an USB DVD with a liveDVD can be choosen for boot by pressing Fn+F12, that gives me a boot menu, so I should at least be able to boot/install another operating system in the future, which is just enough regarding that functionality for me. The problem with accessing BIOS remains, though, and I am looking forward to consult with a good lawyer after I try to figure out does this malfunction has anything to do with the UEFI recently forced by Microsoft - I somehow feel that at least in the EU courts it coud be presented as highly illegal to tamper with customer's freedom, and prevent me to use my laptop in a reasonably functional manner if I do not want Microsoft Windows on it.

How do I update the BIOS on a Linux build of the M3800?  The downloads page only provides an exe file, which doesn't work on Linux.  I also found a page that describes loading the BIOS using a bootable thumb drive, but creating the thumb drive also requires Windows.
The M3800 has been very unstable, and I'm hoping a BIOS update will help.

Answer:BIOS Updates on Linux (M3800)

Hello!  So from everything I could quickly find on the Precision M3800, it came with Windows installed and is not "officially" supported with Linux as such there will not be any way to update the  BIOS without re-installing Windows to do so.  If you have access to a Windows installed computer, you could take the exe file or BIOS file and make a bootable flash drive.
I am not a linux expert by any means, but I have heard of programs like WINE that can emulate windows however since you are updating the BIOS I would highly recommend you use the above two options to update your BIOS less you brick the computer.
Its also possible someone has another idea.

Hi, I posted a few weeks ago about an intermittent resolution my x121e is having. It switches to 1280x800 rather than the correct 136x768. This issue remained for a week, then disappeared, and has now returned. It effects the whole computer, rather than just the linux mint 11 operating system. Terminal commands (xrandr) and grub edits, do not provide a fix.  Hence it has been suggested this is likely a BIOS bug relating to graphics or the motherboard. I am considering a resetting BIOS to defaults once I can ensure the effects this will have on the general working of the machine. No edits have been made to the BIOS by me personally so I cannot be sure if it will work. Other than the virtual shoulder to cry on, would anyone have any advice on what else might be at issue? Or the warranty status pertaining to Linux users? Regards, Daniel.

Hi! I have an E460 laptop, on which I'm dual booting Windows 10 Pro and Manjaro Linux (basically Arch Linux) with Linux kernel 4.5.2. Having the same problem that people discuss in the E460 Keys repeating when pressed for 3 seconds thread, I have been bumping my bios to 1.13, 1.16, and yesterday, to bios 1.17, to see if the problem had been resolved. With the 1.17 bios update, my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working in Linux (In Windows they work fine). They do not even show up in /dev/input, and there is no mention of either of them in dmesg, journalctl, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or anywhere. The touchpad and stick worked fine in bios 1.13 and 1.16, so I'm thinking there is some regression in 1.17. Is anyone else experiencing this? Can Lenovo confirm whether there is a problem?

I bought Windows 7 but surprise it does not work, any version of Windows 7 I try to install lets me do the partitions, the files are installing but at the end of the installation when it says "Setup is updating registry" a blue screen appears with some technical details and it says to check if some drivers are broken or to check for bios upgrades because from security reasons the windows was shut down. The only windows that currently my laptop supports are Vista and Windows 8.The bios version is 1.13 I just did the upgrade ( I used the manufacturer version until now) and I tried to install it again but it just won`t work, instead of starting the windows that blue screen appears and forces me to install windows 8 again. What can I do? I have looked for answers here and everyone is talking about that Advanced Menu in the Bios which of course I don`t have.Any help for me please?Spoiler (Highlight to read)

Have you checked to see if the hidden Win7 erecovery partition is still intact by the Alt+F10 erecovery boot method? If not, you can order Win7 recovery media for nominal cost at http://us-store.acer.com/erecovery/rcd/ Jack E/NJ

My machine is  15 inch Aspire E5-575G-75MD CPU - Intel Kaby i7 Dual core 2.70GFX - GTX 940m 2GBBios - Insyde H20 1.18 Goal -To dual boot into a Linux Distro (TBD) along with Win 10 (currently installed) Details -The newest BIOS version for Aspire E 575G on my device's update page here on Acer is BIOS 1.25, which is the BIOS version that everyone is having issues booting into Linux with from the searches I've done in this community. My current installed BIOS is 1.18. I have not installed any version of Linux yet. All experience has been from booting different Linux distros live from USB. For it to boot from USB as of now I have to switch to Legacy in BIOS. I ran Tails and Mint from USB. They worked.... kinda. They do boot and it does work, but poorly and unusable in any practical sense both having the same performance issues. Symptoms -The trackpads response is painfully slow along with performance degradation causing severe delay in using the OS as a whole. It takes 5 minutes to get the arrow to go where I want (only a slight exaggeration) as well as multiple pad clicks to register selecting any given option or menu. Seems to be lack of performance and/or issues with the trackpad but it seems to  be both. I have read that Linux on Acer has issues (both using the trackpad and in general) when booting using Legacy boot mode and  with several BIOS versions, especially 1.25. I have also read that once users get to BIOS 1.31 or above th... Read more

Hello All,

No ideas yet from anyone including the admins who asked me to post here. Bad luck.

I contacted Acer Support and no one there could give me any information on the issue, so they created a ticket (case ID *********) stating that Id hear from their next tier of support over the next 2-3 days. Over 8 days later and not one word, which needless to say is unfortunate.

This is my very first Acer product as well as my introduction to Acer support. I'm contacting Amazon to see what is involved in returning this Aspire while Im still in the 30 day period. I know 700.00$ isnt a lot of money to some, but it is to me and I've received stellar support after spending less than 10% of this amount with other tech vendors. Heck even the less than great interactions I've had with previous support at least gave me a reply when they said they would.

Anyway apologies for the rant, I was just really happy when I got this for my birthday and this experience cheapens it substantially.

If anone has any ideas I'd be extremely grateful. Otherwise this is getting returned with a nice detailed review on Amazon to warn Linux users and potential buyers about my support experience.

In attempting update the BIOS of my U300-153, which is described as OS independent on the download page, I find that the provided upgrade file in
http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/bios-20090304140640.ZIP
does not include files to make a bootable CD, as described in the instructions at
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07
where Option 2 Step 2 lists the files which are in the zip, and these are required to make a boot cd. The files listed are not in the zip.

This forces me to use Windows. My Windows is broken and I daren't repair it, since Windows repairs destroy data (stated clearly on the recovery CD packaging) and Linux co-installations. My Linux is working fine, and I don't want the Windows anymore.

How then can I upgrade the BIOS? Either:
1. Use a true OS independent package (ie the promised bootable CD approach). I don't find such a thing here.
2. Reinstall Windows, thereby trashing the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Sincerely,
Aleksander K

Answer:Satellite U300 - How to upgrade the BIOS on a Linux system?

>How to upgrade the BIOS on a Linux system?
This is not possible since the BIOS on the Toshiba page is a win-based BIOS version and if you want to update the BIOS then you have to install the Windows OS and then you could execute the exe file?

Hello! I have a Yoga S1 12,5" ThinkPad wich had a damaged Mainboard, so i got a replacement and also changed the touchpad because it was also broken. Everything seems to work but:As soon as Win runs, the Keyboad doesnt work in any way. I can use it normally in BIOS or with a Linux Live CD. Same goes for the Touchpad, but as long as i dont install the right Synaptics drivers, it woks but i cant configure it.I also thought that maybe one of the magnet-sensors are defect, but they are working, also the rotation sensor is ok.touchscreen and digizer are also working.Where Keyboard and Touchpad work:During Win8 Install (from CD downloaded form Microsoft)Linux Live CDBIOSWhere not:Win 8.1 Installation ScreensWin 8 clean installWin 8.1 clean installWin 8.1 Image Original (from the German i5 model, the Replacement Board is an i7 US model)I tried both with Drivers installed for the geman board and also for the US Board but no success..So what can i do? Rip out the Keyboard and glue in a little USB keyboard? Hope someone can help :-)

All Bios versions higher than 1.61 have Linux suspend bug. 1.61 is the last Bios version, that was able to weakeup from suspend under Linux. This is a very common problem. It only works if USB3 is disabled. So this is pain, because I need both USB3 and suspend function. It is defently a Bios bug see this:https:https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80351//bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80351 Is there anyway to get hands on the 1.61 Bios? Why can we not download it to fix this issue? Please help.

Answer:Revo RL70 - BIOS upgrade/changes Linux-->Windows

you can't cross flash BIOS versions since the Linux version doesn't have windows product key embeeded on the BIOS.

One good point is that now I am able to monitor battery status but ttyS0 died which leaded to situation that gammu smsd is no more working. Any help would be more than welcome!  Br-miha
