Simple Support Question

Question: Simple Support Question

Is Acer going to commit to, eventually, supporting Windows 10 on the myriad of laptops it sold that are not (yet?) eligible for the upgrade... Or, do we just up and throw these away and go to a different manufacturer?

Relevance 100%
Preferred Solution: Simple Support Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Simple Support Question

If a machine isn't eligible for the upgrade, it's most often because there is hardware in the machine that is too old for the manufacturer to support. An example would be an 8 or 10 year old video card from ATI. In those years the company was sold and the new owners don't particularly want to spend money on support for those few users who are still using hardware that old. Most machines from the last few years work without any effort except to make sure all updates have been completed before starting the upgrade. In those cases Acer doesn't have to do special drivers to allow them to be used with W10 and the machines aren't on the list of who is getting new drivers.

I've been looking all around the internet for 2 months for my answer, yet I haven't been able to do this. It seems simple to me. Why can't I find an answer for this question...

How do you re-format the C drive?

It seems at least simple to me. That's all I want to so. I have two paritions, C and D. C is my system partition, and install Windows XP Pro on it. That's all. In XP setup, it will not let me format it, so to me in theory, I'm at a dead end. So I've installed XP on the C drive three times, all in the same folder, and now it has taken up 10 GB (why?) of space when it only should take no more than 4.

Answer:Simple question, not so simple answer, reformat C Drive

I recently reinstalled Windows 2000 on my family's laptop here, so that it wouldn't run so sluggishly slow on Windows XP with only 256 MB of RAM. Now, I've run into a peculiar problem that's router based. I'm running my sister's system with Windows XP and this laptop on the same network at their apartment. However, the Linksys BEFSR41 4-port switch is assigning each computer the same IP address, causing conflict. Is there a way in the router settings to easily and manually assign each computer a separate IP address? I'm fairly confident that Cox Communications provides 3 IP addresses for each owner of their cable internet services.

The clock on my PC loses time, I have gathered from other discussions that the answer is to change the battery on the Main board. As a user and not a computer techy - will the removal of this existing battery destroy all the settings on my board (obviously I will take all anti-static precautions. Thank you in anticipation of a postive answer and a hassle free change of this battery. The board by the way is a K7VZA made by "AMR"

Answer:Simple Question - hopefully simple answer!

Yes you will loose the settings in the BIOS this shouldn't be a problem. May be a good idea to write them all down first.A better title to the thread would've made getting an answer even simpler!

I was typing out a song, in wordpad, that I had written, which included letters above each line to show which chord was to be played at which time. I went to print the document and the printed page has the spacing for the chords off. I noticed this happened if you used either a different font or different size for the verse and the chords. To give you an exampe:

A--------C--------D
blah blah blah blah blah

would become:

A---------------C-----------D
blah blah blah blah blah

Obviously the simple fix is to use one font and size for the whole document, but out of curiousity, why is this happening? I played around with it a lot, and was always getting a printed page that had significantly different spacing that what was being shown on the screen, including print preview. I'm sure this is really simple for somebody, but I am not familiar with why it is happening.

P.S. I had to include the hyphens to illustrate my point because this wasn't handling the space issue well either.

Answer:simple question about wordpad, maybe too simple

Wordpad doesn't have very advanced formatting options in its code. its a small step above notepad, which has only basic formatting (spacing) as a simple text editor. Different fonts have slightly different character spacing. since Wordpad is a pretty basic text editor, it doesn't have character spacing formatting in its code, and spacing is read from the font alone.

When simple text without much formatting is sent to the printer, the printer reads the font and outputs the spacing based on the font.

simply put, both the printer and wordpad interpret the font spacing differently.

Hello all,
This is truely a "no brainer" for most, but I'm baffled. Here's the deal.

I have Win XP (SP2) installed with IE 5.?

I've tried to install IE 6 in the past but was unable to because of difficulties at the microsoft update site.

My question is, what is the latest IE version that can be used with SP2 and could someone provide a link to the proper update page from microsoft? Thanks for the help

Hey, this is my first post here so I thought i'd make it simple.

I recently just bought a 500gb external HD and I just transfered all of my D drive(111gb) over to it. Now with my D drive cleared I want to install windows vista ultimate on my D, and keep my Xp on My C drive. So I'm asking the steps I need to take in order to Dual Boot my windows XP and my future windows Vista with both on differnt drives.

Answer:Simple question, want simple answer

This is fairly easy:

0 - Yes, step 0. Make sure you have all the drivers you'll need (motherboard, video, sound, NIC, etc.). Vista should recognize your motherboard/controllers. The rest you can store in a folder on your external drive.

1 - Shut down and disconnect your external drive

2 - Boot to your Vista DVD

3 - Follow the prompts, and when asked where to install, select the D drive. Double check your choice before continuing!

4 - Allow Vista to format it NTFS

5 - Vista will handle the boot loader (where you can choose on power-up which OS to go with)

For the most part, Vista will do everything.

This is a General question regarding the end of support for XP. I realise at the end date the computer should be backed up in case you have to format the disc at any time after the end of the support period.

My question is does the built in Windows back up in XP when backing up the system include the installed updates? Or is it best to use third party software to do this.

shipboard

Answer:[SOLVED] End ofThis is a general question regarding the end of support for XP support

I believe Windows just backs up your personal files and won't do the entire OS. You'll need a 3rd party program to do the entire HDD.

Also you really should think about upgrading to Windows 7. Staying on XP after the end support date is not recommended as you will lose security updates from Microsoft as well as patches.

Hi lads and ladies.

I have come across a really frustrating problem.

The Case:
I work at a hospital, where the current solution for printing a single label costs 0,5 USD.

We can reduce this expenditure 10 fold, by switcing to some alternative labels printers.

On a national basis, we may save >12.000 USD on a yearly basis, if we get an alternative solution to work.

And this solution may be adopted by other biobanking system
Which would make me employee of the year lol.

However installing new labels printers and defining af label format, seems to be a task that no one can handle.

Ived tryied the putting the printer manufacturer tech from both Brother and zeebra printers on the task to solve the problem. I'ved tried IT-support at the hospital.
And even arranged for both of them to try and sole this problem at the workstation.

No one seems to be able to solve the problem to our needs.

The problems we face:

We have tried to define the format in the respective drivers. When we then try to print from an external environment, the printer setting in drivers is not the same as the once shown from the external environment.

However if i set the Labels printer as the "standard printer" (dont know what its is called in eng), the problem of printing the right format labels, seems to be solved. But the problem with this solution is, that when i then try to print on a normal
printer (A4), things looks really wired. It seems like tha... Read more

ALOT of people in my high school have ad-ware and spyware and the like on their computers and complain about it ALL the time. They also have viruses, slow computers (i.e. so many programs starting up during boot). I have never had any problems with this sort of stuff because I take care of my computer through Zone Alarm, Norton, AVG, and Spybot, but I was wondering what would be a good survival kit for a couple cd's that I could carry around with me to fix these people's computers? I figure I'll put Spybot, Ad-Aware 6, AVG 7.0, but what else should I put in my survival kit? I'm sure there are tons of other awesome programs that would be useful, but are there programs like Zone Alarm and Norton that are free that I can install? Also, what commands could I run? My question is simple.
In the past I have used a OnePlus One, but it lack of ergonomy and it have a lot of problem due to lack of android support and horrible touch screen.
Now i'm evaluating the new Lumia 640 and 640XL.
I'm a photograph and i like smartphone that make very good photos.
I'm near to buy a XL for the better camera (13MP) and Zeiss Lens, but i'm undecided....
- it's too big the 640XL? Is good the ergonomy? Or is better loss some quality of the camera... and go with basic 640?
After some week of OnePlus... i had pain to hand for the bad ergonomy of this phone.
I have tried 640 and 640 XL into a shop, but I think that ergonomy can be tested only in daily use.
What is your suggestion and experience? And if you suggest "basic" 640 i will lost a big amount of quality due to the 8 MP camera?
Thanks!

Answer:A simple question... it's better 640 or the 640XL? Ergonomy and other question

Would you consider a Lumia 830?
The 10 MP, Zeiss Lens, PureView, OIS shooter is very nice. Very nice. It surprises many, including Lumia purists.
The size and feel of the device may be more in line with what you want ergonomically.

Good afternoon,
I have been having a terrible time lately, mostly by asking questiona to various firms. A reply I have just had states that if I say to IE - in my case 9 - then certain things are remembered by my - or is it their? - computer. This is supposed to be instead of having cookies activated.
I have gone all round the icons on IE9 - at least twice - and can find nowhere either to activate cookies or to make particular sites into 'trusted websites'. I know I am being thick and stupid and there must be a way of dealing with both of these - especially 'trusted websites'. I would be very grateful, therefore, if someone could take pity on me and tell me how to do such simple things.
Many thanks in advance.

Question: A Simple Question

OK i have a simple question, feel free to post your opinion

i am an avid gamer and really enjoy playing visually stunning games. However, in some games i experience low-fps when i play them, this is fixed if i turn off the sound... Is creative soundblaster 16 bit too weak to play the quality of sound most new games have? should i invest in a new soundcard? if so, which?

thanks in advance for your advice

Answer:A Simple Question

Hi there!

Basically the sound is what is slowing things down. you can TRY to resolve this without buying a new card...

Go into your Sound/Multimedia in Control Panel and under playback device, click the "Advanced" button. Lower the Hardware Accelleration and the Sample Rate and test your frams rate. If that doesn't help, then you'll want to get one of the newer sound cards on the market.

You can buy a SB Live Calue for under 30 bucks in alot of places. that would give you a decent card without spending too much money!
Good Luck!

Mine doesn't, and thank, God for that! I'm sick of losing cards from the fans getting stuck. The heat-sink that comes with it is thought sufficient by the manufacturer. Be sure there is free flow of air around it even if you need to move something to another slot. And be sure the flow of air in and out of the computer case is not impeded.

Question: simple CD question

i went out the other day to get some rerecordable CDs and i was flooded with a range of all different types from CD-r to DVD=RW duel layer, in the end i managed to find out what everything was but the one thing that confused me most was, i have been told there is no difference between CD-R and CD+R, surely there must be a diference soemwhere!!
what is the + and the - for and what do they mean? is one better than the other?

Answer:simple CD question

Do you mean DVD-R and DVD+R?

yes there are differences, its like saying VHS and Betamax are/were the same!

DVD - & + are different writing formats that emerged and are still being argued over as to which is the best so these days to avoid any consumer confusion most manufacturers produce dual format writers that can write in both - and + ( but some writer can only write in minus if its a - drive so if you bought a + disk it woulnt work and vice versa )

CD types and by no means a comprehensive listing....

CDR ~ Write once
CDRW ~ Write and Erase many times

DVD-R ~ Write once
DVD+R ~ Write once
DVD-RW ~ Write and Erase many times
CVD+RW ~ Write and Erase many times
( These have a 4.7gb limit )

then you goto Dual layer DVD types which burn upto 8.5gb

I am running WinXP Home. Is there a way to default the "View" for the folders to what I want, and keep it that way?

For example: I want the View to remain at "Tiles" for my docs folder and "Thumbnails" for my pics folder. When I set it up that way, it will stay for a while, but for whatever reason at some point, usually within a reboot or two, it reverts back to the "Icons" view. Especially for the folders within the main folder.

I thought that Windows remembers the last configuration and keeps it as such.

Thanks.

ok a web site i go to has a certain font in it when i view it at work. then when i go home and look at the same site the font is different and is harder to read. isn't there a font setting that is making the font different than what it should be? for one reason or another this seems to be the only site i notice this in. Or the only one that bugs me i guess. what would cause the fonts to be different?

Answer:simple IE question.

Hello in4pain!

First, I'm assuming you have Internet Explorer. Go to tools, click Internet Options. On the General tab, at the bottom right click Accessibility. Under Formatting, is "Ignore Font Styles Specified on Web Pages" checked? If it isn't and the webpage is using a font your computer can't display then it will show it in the default system font. Also try the "Ignore Font Sizes Specified on Web Pages". Rule of Thumb: If you don't have a font, you can't see it.

Also in Internet Options > General > Fonts you can specify a font to be displayed if a Webpage doesn't specify one.

Hope this helps.

if you open internet explorer, and click on "tools" and then "options" and then "content" you will see a button labeled "autocomplete".

click that one, and in there you will see a few options for things like, "web addresses" and "forms" and so on.

i am pretty sure if you uncheck the appropriate boxes there, this will stop tormenting you.

EDIT: however, if what concerns you is that it is remembering them at all, there is a different setting that tells it not to remember these things.

(same as the first, but in ZipZoomFly)

(Last option)

Which is the best one?
I think seriously in the first option in Newegg, but they like to deactivate their products very often. Im planning to get it in February. If Newegg fails, is ZipZoomFly a good site?
The second option looks good, with 256MB and retail package, and the Powercolor one looks good too.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

To be honest, that card is very old. Try newer ati cards, or even an nvidia solution.

I currently have 1 x 1 GB of Kingston DDR2 533MHz/PC2-4200 Non-ECC CL4 1.8V Unbuffered Dimm 240 pin Ram.

I'm looking at buying some more. My options are as follows:
1) Buy another stick of the same for 15

2) Buy a Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 675MHz/PC2-5400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL4(4-4-4-12) for 30

3) Buy 2 more of the kingston sticks so run 3 x 1GB.

Which of these options is best for the price? I.E would spending 15 more for the faster corsair give an increase in performance equivalent to spending twice the amount?

Thanks

Hi ThereI am in the process of planning my new PC that I am, for the first time, going to be building myself. Having read articles etc I realise that it is import to get a power supply that is at least big enough to power all the components I put in however, is it detrimental to put in a PSU that is far bigger than is needed? i.e. if I put in a 650W power supply but only draw 350W.Presumably the advantage would be that any further upgrades would be covered if they required more power - but are there any disadvantages i.e. increased noise? Thanks in advance

Question: Simple Question(s)

I have a bad hard drive (constantly re-boots machine, tested in another and does the same) and was curious if it's still possible to transfer (ghost, if you will) the info to another drive without complications? There is some valuable info on this drive that I need to recover and figured this was the best and most inexpensive way to go about it. Also, if transferring IS possible can it be done to an unformatted drive or would if have to be done to a drive with a matching O.S.?

I'm assuming it's the mechanics of the drive causing the problem however if anyone has any further imput I would be greatly appreciative.

Mucho thanks.

Question: A simple question

I am running a Dell computer as some of u know, the AGP slot on it only supports 4x AGP. The crad that came with it is an AGP 8x card. I am confused. I thought that if an AGP 4x/8x card is put into an AGP 2x/4x slot then the mobo would fry? please give some clarity to this very big head scratcher I have. Thanx

Answer:A simple question

The only way to be sure is to dig out the specs on the board and the AGP card, but, in general the cards are keyslotted and you should not be able to plug an AGP into a motherboard with the wrong voltages. But to confuse the issue some AGP's are capable of handling multiple voltages (They are called 2X/4X or 4x/8X cards or Universal cards) and they have two keyslots in the connector. And some motherboards have no key in the socket as they were deemed 'universal' at the time of manufacture.

In your case you need to check the AGP slot to see if is 2X/4X or 4X only - if it is 4X only it should have a key/bar in the slot.
Your card is 8X (which can run as a 4X) it supports 1.5V and 0.8V. So if your mobo is 4X only, you should be OK but if it is 2X/4X then you risk board damage.

Clear as mud huh?

Hi guys,

Ok, before I start I don't know much about anything at all. I'm just hoping this will be a simple one to answer.

So I have like 1gig of ram right now and 2 free slots so I figured I could add more. I have an old PC and I ripped the ram out of it hoping I could slot it into my current pc and get a little boost. They're only 128mb and 256mb..pieces of ram confused but I figured they couldn't hurt, right? Considering they're sitting doing nothing I thought it would be nice to put them to work.

So after a little reading I found out certain ram is compatible with certain motherboards? Well, my motherboard is a..let me get this right..ASUSTeK Computer INC. A8N-SLI SE 1.XX ..and the ram I'm hoping to install is M-tec PC133. Is this enough info for you to tell me if they will be compatible with each other?

Or should I just stop being a cheapskate and buy new ram?

Thanks in advance =)

I've always wondered how safe it is to select the 'remember me' button when logging onto the website of a credit card or my bank. If I bypassed typing in my username/password with this option is there any way someone could use it against me easily? Thanks,

Safe is relative, I am not positive, but pretty sure that most https sites won't store passwords anyway.

Personally I wouldn't store them, even with a good secure password, (check your potential password here) and a good firewall

Question: Simple question

Hi there,
I just want to know if I can shut down, disable, turn off or kill (use whatever word you like) the Motherboard Temperature Sensors. Can I "unscrew it" from motherboard or can I just "tear it apart". Why I want to do that? Because my PC Wizard and other temperature watching programs show that motherboard temperature is 95 C; which of course isn't true. In BIOS all seems fine. I just want to destroy that sensor, 'cause of that system restarts very often under the thought that my motherboard "burns". Please just tell me how to shut it down. I know it may have bad sides but just tell me, I just want to disable it.

Thanks in advance,
Andrija.

Answer:Simple question

You should be able to open the PCwizard progam and
set the sensors you want to monitor.
http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php#directions
If you are using it to connect to motherboard monitor,
you will need to select the sensors in it.

Hi,

I have a friend who has a USB Air Card/Modem (UDM-680). He want's me to set-up a wireless hotspot in his office so that anyone w/a laptop can connect.

He has a wireless router (ctr500 cradlepoint) with a usb port for the modem but I've messed with it for 3 days, about 19 hrs., and i still cannot get the thing to see the modem and dial out to the net.
It's a real nice router...if it worked. The site says that it supports the modem and carrier so it should be PnP but it is not. I'm gonna go over there in a bit and see about updating the modem and firmware, maybe but i'm getting sick of it, but I remember the firmware for the router is up to date and it shouldn't be this hard and a waste of time.

So

He also has a wireless cisco router, don't know model I'm home now, but I assume that it has an Ethernet input port. I've looked for a USB to Ethernet adapter but didn't see one. Any one know of one ?

Thanks

BTW: He just bought an Emachines w/Win 7 on it and I'm kinda inclined to go at the ctr500 some more. I hope i can get some help here.

Is there a way to uninstall Windows media player in XP?

Answer:Maybe a simple question.

Don't think it can be uninstalled. You can make The "classic media player" the default though:

From tweakxp.com

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type "mplayer2" and click OK. Now you have the original Media Player loaded.

If you want to make this the default media player follow the directions below:

1. When the classic Windows Media Player is running, click on the view menubar and select options.
2. Then click on the format tab and choose which formats you would like it to open by checking the box.
3. Click OK, now all of the formats you selected will open with the classic Windows Media Player.

Is it possible to run task manager as a service, so it won't be on the screen or minimized but it will be in the sys tray?

Answer:Simple Question

In Windows XP, Task-manager is already in the system tray running as a service. To get to it, just right click on the task bar and choose it from the menu.

If your Windows platform doesn't have this option in the system tray, you can do a search for the "taskmgr.exe" file. Then just drag & drop the one whose location is in the system32 folder to the "Quick Launch" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch). All you have to do then is click on the icon in the Quick Launch if your Quick Launch is enabled!

Question: Simple XP Question

Ok, I know this is prolly gonna sound stupid, but I'm kinda worried right now so I figure'd I'd ask. Seeing the answer from someone other than me will make me feel better.

My computer HDD crashed, and have currently brought it in to be fixed. At worse-case scenario, I'll have to obtain an OS disc and then download the drivers from my laptop's site and install them.

Well, my two questions are:

1)If a computer has no drivers or anything on it (a completely fresh HDD), how do you install XP from a CD? My laptop is an Aspire 5670 if that helps.

2)I'm planning to build a desktop in the future. If I buy XP now for my laptop (if it's needed), will I be able to install that copy of XP on my desktop as well, or will I have to get another copy?

Thanks. Killing two birds with one stone:)

Answer:Simple XP Question

well...first of all your motherboard automatically recognizes devices such as keyboards and mouses and cd-roms and when you boot from the xp cd, it loads the remaining drivers needed...

i'm not entirely sure about your second question, you will have to wait for someone else to help you on that one...

Question: A simple question:

I have an X2 processor. My mobo supports X2, but only with a better updated BIOS. So, I can't start up my new rig without the updated BIOS, and I can't update the BIOS without starting up the new rig?!?!? What do I do? I have access to another computer, but no substitute processor or anything. Is there a way of updating the BIOS without even being able to see my boot up? Because my monitor isn't getting any kind of signal from the computer, it just goes into standby as if the comp isn't on or something...

Thanks

Answer:A simple question:

No. If your machine doesn't POST, you cannot update the BIOS. I'd think that the only difference between a board that supports X2 and one that doesn't would be that one core is shut off.

Maybe not.

Only other option would be to remove the cmos itself, and contact the company for a new one with the updated BIOS, assuming they are willing to sell an updated one.

didnt know where to post this, but i really need to know....

Is leaving your computer on for long amounts of time, like all night, bad for the computer in any way, shape, or form? cuz i dont really feel like coming up with money to fix it if it screws up on me..thanks

Answer:Simple Question

You pose a good question. A simple question with a simple answer.

No it will not harm your computer. I leave mine on all the time. Just set it to where the main hardware shuts off after a hour or so and it runs on little energy.

It will over time make it slower. You will need to restart often maybe once a day or so is good. That is how I do mine and have done it for a while now. Just give it a restart here and there and your set.

I know hibernation comes in handy on Xp so if you want to shut your computer down and restart fast later it comes up a whole lot faster.

Hope this helps on your question.

Question: Simple question

Hi,

In Outlook 2007 calendar I want to print an event that starts on 16th March & ends on 13th April. I would like this to print all on a single page which should be feasable as it's 29 days and the printed page for a single month has space for 42 days.

I've set the start and end dates in the printer settings but Outllok insists starting on the week that includes 1st and therefore spans two pages.

If Outlook can't handle this does anyone know of any other 3rd party apps that can handle 29 days on a single sheet of page?

Thanks in advance.
