I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, When I wake up my Thinkpad T440s from sleep by openning the lid, there are beeps and nothing else happens. The screen is all black but it looks pretty obvious something is going on behind the scenes (I hear the subtle noise when opening the lid). After a few minutes, there is a sound and then it is automatically shut down. If I don't wait and close the lid, then I hear the final sound  after 1-2 minutes (which is a bit louder than the beeps at the beginning) and it is automatically shut down.  This sympton began to occur just after I installed the latest BIOS a few days ago. After the BIOS, I also installed the latest Thinkpad System Update Version 5.07.0013, but somehow for the first time it doesn't work properly (always stops in the middle of checking for updates with the error message "An error occured while downloading packages" on the screen, so this system update utility is entirely useless now). My OS is Windows 10 64-bit upgraded from Windows 8.1. I bought this new Thinkpad for several months now. Other than these, there are no other problems that I know of. Can you please help? I'm not really good at the technical things relating to the computer, so please give detailed instructions if possible.  Thank you so much

The screen on my t440s will turn off and computer will go into sleep mode if I adjust the screen.  The screen also occasionally flickers.  I assume something is wrong with the power delivery to the screen, perhaps a wire going to the screen? The laptop is no longer under warranty, but I have experience replacing internal parts of laptops myself.  What part/parts should I expect to buy or replace to fix this issue?  Thanks in advance.Jeff

I have a Compaq laptop, V3700 which i bought just last year, OS is Windows Vista,  I dont have a knowledge about computer troubleshooting so pls bear with me.   I use this just for surfing the internet, media files store keeping.  My question is, before, whenever i close the lid of mylaptop, it goes into sleep, no matter how many hours it is close, and when i open the lid it asks me for my password.  But now, i close the lid, it goes into sleep still, but when i open it, the screen is just blank, no activity on the screen. So i press the power button for 2 or 5 seconds to turn it off.  Then hit the power button again, then it gives me a windows error recovery message saying i didnt shut down my computer.  I always choose the "Windows start normally"  since i am not sure what other options mean, like the safemode etc.  I have already tried changing the power settiings thinking it could be the cause but it still gives me a blanck screen after opening the lid. What should i do to fix it?  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

For the last two weeks, whenever I tried to wake my desktop computer from sleep mode I was presented the sign on screen and within a split second by a blank screen. For the last 5 years it had worked perfectly.
I knew there could be a plethora of reasons for this, so I began by disabling ASUS's AI nap. After this I decided to update the ATI Radion HD 4300 driver.  I asked it to search the internet and went for a coffee. Ten Minutes later,  much to my amazement, it had installed the new driver without me asking! There was a warning message which I could not decipher.
I then ran Norton to scan the entire computerand went for another coffee.  On return found this:

As far as I know such issues are fixed with BIOS update. Can you please tell us which notebook model you have exactly and which BIOS version is preinstalled on your notebook?

I believe 2.70 is the latest BIOS version.

Hi, I've run into a wide variety of similar issues by searching but none specifically like the one I have, so sorry in advance if this has already been mentioned.

This problem started after the Creators Update. Anytime my system goes into sleep mode (I'm on a laptop so any time I close it), the user login field does not appear on the screen. Upon re-opnening the laptop, I am guaranteed to see the screen with the background with time & date in the lower left. If I click or press any key, the screen changes but my username and password field are missing. I still have access to the bottom right buttons (power, internet etc), so thankfully I can restart without any problems. The login screen appears after a seemingly random number of restarts. If I restart and the login field does not appear, I simply restart again until I see it. The number of restarts required to access the login screen is random, 1-3 times. After I login my computer works normally with no problems.
This is pretty much the only problem I have, my laptop is almost 2 years old and still in very good shape. If anyone has a fix let me know! Thanks in advance

Intermittently, after being left for some time my A100-049 screen remains blank when reactivated from sleep mode. It does not respond to hot keys and have checked settings which seem to be okay.

Noticed that when this happens the power button remains "blue" and does not flip to "flashing amber. Is this a common problem?

Answer:Satellite A100-049 screen remains blank when reactivated from sleep mode

What do you mean with sleep mode? Do you mean the hibernation mode or the stand by mode??? What OS do you use??

Listen buddy?. It?s really not easy to say why it happens without running some diagnostic tests. I think you should try to update the graphic driver and check if you use the newest BIOS version. Both updates could be helpful to solve such issues?

I recently purchased a Sony Bravia XBR55X900E tv and I connect my pc to it via HDMI.  Here's is my setup:

Dell XPS 8700 connects to HDMI 2 on Sony TV.
My TV receiver connects to HDMI 1 on Sony TV.
My Sony AVR connects to HDMI 3 on Sony TV, strictly for audio purposes (ARC).
Logitech Harmony one universal remote.

My issue is this:  Whenever I switch between activites (example PC to watching TV), after the TV switches to HDMI 1 from HDMI 2, this puts my Dell into sleep / standby mode.  If I press the power button, it lights up like normal.  If I go back to the PC activity, again once the TV switches from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2, the computer again goes into this "sleep" mode and I again have to press the power button to take it out of it.
All of my pc settings are set to NEVER with respect to monitor or PC going to sleep / standby mode.  Prior to this TV I had my pc connected to an older plasma TV and this never happened.
I contacted Sony to see if it something with their Bravia sync but the person said that everything looked good from the TV's end.
I'm hoping that someone has come across this and can steer me in the right direction as it is really frustrating and I don't know what else to try.

I just got a brand new laptop with Windows Hello. It's very useful for logging in, but my laptop now goes to sleep every time I leave my desk. The red light next to the infrared camera blinks often when I'm using my laptop (which is also pretty annoying), and then if I get up, even for a few minutes (to grab a snack, notebook, etc.) my laptop goes to sleep. I'm pretty computer illiterate, but I suspect that the camera is still looking for me while I'm using my computer and then decides my laptop needs to sleep when it doesn't see my face anymore. Is there any way to change this? I like not having to use a password, but the red light and going to sleep is annoying, especially since I tend to get up from my desk a lot just to stretch. It also seems like having the camera on all the time would drain the battery pretty quickly. Am I way off base here?

I'm not sure if any other user has experience  this issue. I did a lenovo update couple weeks back and since then my wireless adapter would not work after waking up from sleep mode. It shows that the wireless adapter is connected to wireless network but the internet would not work. The only way i can make it work is by disabling the wifi adapter by putting the laptop in airplane mode and then bringing it back out from it. Disabling and enabling the wireless adapter does a quick fix and does allow me to use the internet without any issue for the time being. i have also uninstalled and reinstalled fresh drivers from lenovo website, still having the same problem. Any idea, suggestion or fix?

The display on my new T440s stays off and cannot be recovered, when it is in password-protected sleep mode (or when it has gone to sleep from password-protected screen saver mode). The only way to recover is to press the power button to shut down completely, and reboot the computer.  When I remove the password protection from sleep mode,  the display turns on and off as expected during sleep/wake cycles. Have any of you experienced this?  Is there a fix?  I do want to use password protection in sleep mode for security.Thanks.

Just bought Lenovo notebook with Windows 10 Home.

On my old VISTA laptop, when I put my computer in sleep mode and then woke it up, I could always view my connected MP3 player and its files.

When I do the same with my new notebook, I have to unplug and re-plug the usb connector in order to view the mp3 files.

I tried fixing by going into device manager, power management for the USB hubs, and unchecking the "allow this computer to turn off..." setting.

I alsodisabled this:
I appreciate help, thanks

If you disable USB Selective Suspending and uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power', your MP3 shouldn't have any problems. Perhaps double check witch device you unchecked.

A little background: UEFI clean install win 7 home prem, all correct drivers, bios (UEFI), and updates installed (to my knowledge...and lots of effort to make sure I have all the latest and greatest.)  1141-a24 The Issue:   All methods of putting the computer into standby (sleep) results in two beeps and the display turns off.  The "i" light remains solid.  If left like this sometimes (maybe always...) it will go into hybernation but not into sleep mode (which will give you the "i" light slowly pulsing.) On fresh reboot, the computer will sleep normally.  With the two beeps I was thinking error code but I have not been able to locate any errors listed on the computer, also I have not been able to find any information on the computer giving a Beep code other than during post. Any ideas?

Answer:Windows 7 blank screen after sleep mode (unable to power off with power button)

Is it possible that you can test with another compatible PSU? I would strongly suggest doing so.

Also try the following steps:
?Make sure that the (internal) speaker is connected to the motherboard
?Remove all memory and attempt to boot the PC
?You should get the no memory beep errors

If the Power Supply is in working order and no beeps are present then it can be indicative of a faulty motherboard.

For troubleshooting purposes it may be a good idea to remove the components from the case and bench test to rule out a short.

It looks like my computer was logged on by someone during that time of audible beeps.  I have only had Win10 a few days.  I am using a hard wired modem.  Event id 4624.  It shows login, but it was NOT me.  I had the power cord removed when it was logged on, but not my ethernet cord.  I need to remove the ethernet cord every night too?  I am using Win10 firewall.
I logged in at 10:16am.  Somebody logged in at 8:59am.  (nobody was here but me)
8:59 am - It has a Logon, Special Logon, User Account Management, Logon, Special Logon, Security Group Management, Logon, Special Logon, Security Group Management, then two more times the Security Group Management had a listing.  Then it showed nothing. This was over the course of one minute. Then I logged on at 10:16 am.  It showed that.  During that time it beeped, the computer was asleep.  There were about 5 beeps, and then it didn't beep again.  Very strange.  I've never had a computer to beep when it was asleep like that.

Is there a way to do this without putting your computer to sleep?

I'd like to be able to lock my screen and still have my files download while it's locked for example.

I've tried google and all, but all the results are for mac, and nothing is showing for PC...

Thanks guys!

Answer:lock screen without putting computer to sleep

Hi, if you mean to just lock your computer, I am asumming vista, it is pretty easy.
You will need to have the settings correct so it won't go to sleep automatically.

But if you want o have it so you need the accout password to use the computer again, just go to the Start Menu, and on the bottom right will be 2 buttons and an arrow. One button is to shut the computer down or something like that, the other is to lock the computer. You can als click the arrow and select Lock that way.

I'm not sure if the Lock optio is avaliable if you don't have a password set, so you will need to have that set.

If this is not what you were looking for, please tell me and I will try to correct it.

I have a T420 that sits in a dock, 24x7 and never goes into sleep mode (I need to be able to access it around the clock). However, I don't need the external monitor on all the time, that just eats power. I have the notebook set up to shut the monitor down after 10 minutes.  But as soon as that happens, I get the plug and play beeps starting. It is like someone is continually plugging and unplugging a USB key.   The monitor is an Emprex 20" LCD that is connected by a DVI cable to the dock.  The driver (Win7 64bit) is "generic pnp driver, there is no driver from the company. If I take the monitor out of the dock and plug in the 15-pin D-sub to the monitor, it sleeps and I never hear a sound. Also, if the system starts beeping with the monitor in sleep mode, if I hit the power button on the monitor and turn it off fully, the beeping stops, so this is definitely tied to the monitor, not another device. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this issue? Right now I have to shut the speakers off when I am stepping away from the computer.

Why bother at all, the machine is outdated and antiquainted to say the least, you would be hard pressed to run anything except Win98 or 95 on it, mind you you could run a Linux system on it.

However should you want to perservere then heres some advice

Mouse/Keyboard faults can cause a fail to POST

as can faulty Memory,CPU, addon card, faulty PSU.

Check the board for any shorts to earth,

Reset the BIOS by removing the battery or moving the Jumper.

Im sure thats enough for now let us know...

It can happen with any programme but is most likely with Microsoft money 2000, Internet explorer or Media player. The only solution is to switch off mains power and reboot. Thanks Grev.

Answer:Blank screen and 'Beeps'

sounds like a graphics prob, might seem obvious but is it seated properly etc? other than that drivers?cheers.johnny

When I turn on my son's pc, I get 1 beep followed by 2 more beeps - and then nothing. The screen stays black so I can't even try to get into safemode or setup. I tried using a boot disk which didn't make a difference.

Also, the power button on the screen goes green for a second then blinks orange as if the pc isn't even turned on. My guess is a problem with the screen itself or the video card.

Any help or suggestions before I open the thing up or buy parts that I don't need are appreciated.

Used forums before with great success. Can't seem to find an existing thread addressing the problem I have now. I moved the computer and when I put it all back and turned it on there are 6 BEEPS that come from the CPU and nothing on the monitor. The monitor light comes on as green then goes to amber. Made no changes, wondering if something came loose in the move? Already looked inside, nothing looks apparently wrong.

Answer:6 beeps and a blank screen???

What brand is the PC, and if you know it, the type of BIOS? The beep code indicates a specific problem, but varies between brands.

Check that the RAM is seated correctly, and try one stick at a time if you have more than one.

It might be worth taking a look at this.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 running XP Home Edition and (I think) service pak 3. When I start the computer I get a blank screen followed by 2 beeps. I have removed the regular battery and the reserve (the tiny battery), let sit for over an hour and tried to reboot, but, same thing happened.

My tech ability is limited, so, if there is no simple keystroke-type fix, I will need to take it to one of those national chain stores. Also, I am not very good at backing-up my work- am I screwed if this turns out to be a motherboard problem?

Answer:[SOLVED] 2 Beeps...Blank Screen

Have you installed/changed anything recently? Check your RAM and reseat it. If it still does not turn on properly try taking out the RAM modules, then putting them back in 1 at a time booting after each is placed in to see if the computer boots. If one module causes the computer to not boot properly, take that module out and continue with the rest until you've gone through all available RAM modules.

If you go through all the RAM modules and none have worked you may also want to try a different slot.

OK no windows not even that BIOS stuff just blank screen and beeps roughly every 3 seconds

Heres the things i`ve tried so far...

Windows XP Home Edition CD wont work

Removing stuff give it a clean and slotting back in didn`t work

And heres a quick guide to whats happened so far...

I had this problem before but some times it would start up and say theres a nostkrnl.exe missing or corrupted, i tried eveything on the windows cd recovery console what people told me to do but it didn`t work
So eventually i thought what the hell and decided to reload windows... which was a complete success as it kinda went over the top of the old ones so i could find my old files and stuff

Unfortunately i turn it off and then on again the next day and i`m back to the beeping and blank screen... and this time theres no getting into safe mode or windows CD or anything

Please Help....

Answer:HELP!!! PC Blank screen at start up and 3 sec`s beeps

If it was a desktop computer it has an external monitor, most monitors
show a configuration screen when first powered on until it receives a signal.
Turn the monitor and computer both off for a few seconds, turn the monitor on
you should see the default config screen for it with possibly a logo of the manufacturer,
turn the computer on, does the monitor turn black or does the configuration screen still show?

Next thing is what make and model is the computer? If it is a dell desktop you should be able to locate
4 LED lights on the back near the USB ports labeled A/B/C/D when you power your computer on and hear the beeps
see if any of these lights turn on and take note of them also take note of the beep sequence (# of times and how many
times it occurs also how frequently).

Report back with this information.

Hey, I've been googling my problem and every problem is specific so i registered here. So, the other day I wanted to install a hard drive i found in my dads closet. I hooked it up, but I forgot to configure the jumpers to master/slave so my computer doesnt boot up. So I remove the new HDD and try to boot up, same thing. I tried booting without HDD CD/DVD drives etc. and still i cant get into the bios, the mobo LED is on and the fans spin. So i tried reseating the ram, that didnt work so I went out and bought some new ram and it didnt work either. I tried booting without ram and i get three beeps. I found the CD for my mobo and when i try to boot from that i get 2 short beeps, a pause, and then 5 short beeps. It turns out my dad told me that the HDD i tried to install was damaged and broken, but even with all the drives unplugged I cant get into bios, please help I really want to get back to Grim Fandango

Hi Service Team,
My Dell inspiron N5010 was in sleep/hibernate by closing the lid which i usually do. Usually i would reopen the lid and press start which would resume the OS, but this time only the power button back light got lighted up and fan started working but nothing on screen, not even the dell logo. The screen is completely blank. Also system is instantly turning off on hitting power button, with in no second. Also, on hitting the power button power light stays, cpu light blinks once and goes off forever.
This also happened in my last boot, that time I thought battery is going dead and for that screen is hung so I immediately plugged in charger and it started working. But as it happened again today, I started looking into it and tried below options which did not help:
1. Tried to plug in charger and start.
2. fn+power button for tests
3. remove battery and try to start using charger
4. removing battery and hitting power button for 45 secs that was said to solve/reset hibernate issue if any, then replace battery and try starting up.
All of the above options have failed. Please suggest any other possible way to restart if its in my scope. Also, please tell the possible issue if it a lcd problem or hdd problem or any other problem and  how to resolve it.

Hi,Can someone help to suggest a sulution to fix the blank screen problem? Re-seating of memory sticks did not fix it.Problem description:Four beeps and blank screen after pressing power on button. The four beeps are short and faint. They are quieter than the noise from DVD drive. The beeps are much weaker than those beeps when the memory sticks are removed. There are only one group of four beeps, so it is not security chip problem which is associated with 4 cycles of 4 beeps.Following LEDs stay ON:"Power on","Battery Status","AC Power status" and"DVD status".Following LEDs were flashed and then OFF:"Num lock',"Caps lock","Drive in use" and"DVD drive LED".FAN and DVD were spin.System:Thinkpad T500 2242-CTO, CPU P8600, 2x1G memory, onboard video.

I have encountered the "8 beeps on start up" problem.
I've tried pressing "D" plus the power button to do the screen test which shows several solid colors flashing and then goes black after about 10 seconds. The power button stays lit but there are no "working" sounds coming from the computer. The fan runs lightly.
I've tried hooking up to an external monitor and there is no signal or display.
I've tried taking apart and reconnecting cables inside computer with no success.
Any other ideas? Could it be a hardware problem that I can replace myself?
Thanks in advance.

Answer:urgent!! Blank screen with beeps-not laptop

If the BIOS is not holding the date/time and other settings it means the battery on the motherboard is dead. This is generally a round watch type battery and is easily replaceable. The BIOS contains settings that tell it what type of Hard drive (HDD) that you have so it knows how to read it. Once you get the battery replaced you can then setup the BIOS with the date/time and HDD settings and that might be all that is needed.

My Toshiba Satellite A200 has recently been giving me a blank screen with 3 beeps at every start up. I took it to a friend to get it fixed and they told me I had to take the battery out and put it back for it to start. It worked for him but not me. I called Tech. Anyone have the same problem and know what to do? I wouldnt mind checking the memory myself I just dont know where to start...

Please help interpret the POST error code I am hearing:3 high-pitched beeps followed by 1 longer lower-pitched beep I have a Lenovo IdeaCentre K430 (Windows 7 Home Premium) that's been working flawlessly since purchased 3 years ago.I upgraded the gpu to an NVIDIA GTX 660 shortly after purchase and have had zero problems with it. Everything else has been stock. I needed to test components from a different computer. I swapped the stock i7-3770K cpu out with an i7-3770 (no K on the end of the cpu name). Didn't change anything else. When I tried to boot the computer, the chassis, cpu, and gpu fans turned on and I heard the 4 beeps error code (3 shorter followed by one longer), but screen was blank. Thinking that maybe the cpu I was testing might be faulty, I put the original cpu back in.Same error code beeps and still a blank screen. I pulled the motherboard battery -- no change. Everything else is left as it was before, and this was a working system. Could this have something to do with secure boot rejecting either the gpu, which isn't the original, or the change to a "foreign" cpu? Or is there something in the BIOS/UEFI settings that have to be reset? I can't tell how I would do it since I'm not getting any video output. What does that specific error code signify? (Correction:  The stock cpu is a 3770. The one I was testing is a 3770K.)

About 2 weeks ago i started having sleep issues. It used to work perfect for over a year, I figured something went wrong and couldnt get sleep to work consistently. Thought a reinstall might fix it.

Now on the new install, about a week. I am still having issues. Sometimes the computer will wake in the middle of the night around 330am and other random times. Also sometimes the computer powers up when coming out of sleep but monitor doesnt come on. I installed the updated drivers for mobo, video card. And disabled the network from being able to wake the computer (something I actually want on). I also tested with stock speeds on mobo, cpu. Same issues, have also tried stock with increased voltages. No luck.

What should i do its driving me crazy?
I remember seeing a way to see a log of what caused computer to come out of sleep? Since I just reminded myself, I will go and check all connections inside computer.

It has windows xp and the rest of the specs can be found here.9 out of 10 times on start up it just beeps rapid fire continuously and doesn't stop until I unplug it. I've let it go for over a minute. Both fans inside turn on so I'm not sure if its a cooling issue. My first guess was the ram. I had extra ram sitting around and threw that in, but it still made the same noise. I also took out the ram and started it and the computer only beeped once, which is what I expected, so I'm assuming the ram is not the problem. The times that it does start, it works fine. Hi - a friend's computer has not been used for ages. He has been given a digital camera and wants to use the comp again..! However, the screen is totally blank (I have tried 3 monitors using different cables etc) it says no connection.Could it be the on-board video card or maybe the battery is dead as it has not been plugged in for months. Also can I put in a video card and get rid of the onboard wiring? Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

Answer:blank screen - no beeps - poss cmos battery?

The beeps you refer to is the system performing a POST test (Power On Self Test). Since you are not getting this I would check the PC itself is getting power i.e LEDs and fans operating, if not then either the PC power cable is faulty or the Power Supply has failed.

Hi guys,

I installed an express card yesterday and it's caused all sorts of havoc (IRQ conflicts, hangs etc).

I went to restart this morning and it's now just giving me 2 beeps and nothing on screen. I've looked up the phoenix bios bleep codes but this one aint listed. Any ideas if I can do a BIOS reset with a jumper?

Obviously I've tried removing the express card!

Any help would be fantastic

Answer:2 Beeps on Startup and blank screen - Satellite P300-19P

Hi buddy,

BIOS reset can only be done from an authorized service provider but I don?t think the BIOS is the problem because such beep codes mean that a hardware malfunction was detected?

What you can do is removing the battery and AC adapter for one hour and then connect both again. Does your notebook start again?

If not it?s serious hardware malfunction and you should contact a notebook technician for help.

I do have a R50 1830-6FU. Now it doesn´t boot, it gives the beep code long-short-short.As far as I could find out that it seems to be the graphic chip. The question is: can I replace it by my self or do I have to send it to Lenovo? How much will it cost roughly? The R50 is now about 4 years old, it used to be my former company PC (now I´ve got a T61). Thanks! Losi

Answer:R50 beeps 1 long and 2 shorts with a blank screen when booting

Hi losi,Welcome to the forum! The proceeding manual says the culprit can be either one of following:- 1. System board. 2. LCD assembly. 3. DIMM. suggest replacing the RAM first, if that doesn't solve the problem then try system board. Lenovo will charge a lot more than what the actual R50 costs so it's better to buy the board yourself and replace it with the help of above manual. On eBay, they go for around $100:- it helps.

Hi folks,
A friend has given me a laptop to try and fix. It's a Toshiba Satellite 3000-X11.
Sometimes it works fine. Starts up like normal.
Sometimes, fairly randomly, it will not start. In this instance nothing will come up on the screen at powerup. The fan will kick in. The screen is black and there are four beeps. About 1 per second. It then sits there. On, but half dead. Can hear fan from time to time.
I've read messages on the net that suggest this is a hardware failure of some kind. What I'd like to know is if there is any easy way to know what hardware has failed. Nearly all the messages I read talked about three beeps. This is four.

Makes no diff if I am running it from AC or battery.

I have no idea what makes it start working again.

I suspect (just a suspicion) that it tends to stop working after it has been moved around (i.e. picked up and moved to another desk etc.).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, is there a Toshiba diagnostic tool I can download and run that will test the machine out?

Answer:Satellite 3000-X11: Four beeps at start-up, blank screen

Hi buddy,

if the machine really behaves like you described then the machine has an serious hardware failure. I had the same machine a few years ago with
the same problem.
So I brought my machine to a service partner and they exchanged some "PCB?s" like they said.
These PCB?s are e.g. the mainboard or the graphics card.

If the machine you have is out of warranty, then you won?t have big chances to fix it on your own due to faulty core components.

Hello Everyone,

Recently my M2N-E all of a sudden stopped POSTing and gave me a blank screen. I used it everyday to do light computing and school work. My computer was on when a power outage caused by someone using an electric (power) saw. I turned the computer back on a few hours after the power went back on and everything seems to work fine as usual. I left it running on the internet while making a quick trip to school to turn in some paperwork. When I returned, the computer just hangs there. The LED on the USB mouse wasn't on either. So I pressed the reset button to restart the computer, but it won't POST, just a blank screen. When I press the power button to turn it on, the CPU and case fans spin but computer just hangs there and the red HDD LED lights up without blinking.

I've been using this computer since February 2009 when I received this board as an RMA and it worked 100% until now.

This is what I've tried:

Power on with one RAM and video card
Take the motherboard out of the case and powering it on a cardboard box (w/ CPU, one stick of ram, and VGA card of course)
Borrowed a friend's 500w PSU from his gaming rig to try on my system, but still no go

Every computer part was tested and confirmed to be working on my friend's computer except for the motherboard and CPU because he has Intel

Please help me troubleshoot this problem as I really need this computer for school.

Hello, I have a HP 840 G3 laptop with a blank screen. Can't access BIOS or other recovery menu. After I press the power button there is one (1) short led and SOMETIMES an extra long led, but not beeps at all, followed by restart every 30 second. I tried to run it without Ram and I got 3 long led + beeps followed by 2 short led + beeps, so the warning system is functional. I tried to create a bios recovery usb and start the laptop with the Win button + B combination, but nothing appears on the screen. Moreover, the cpu fan start to run on maximum speed and there is no restart at all. It just stay on full fan speed and blank screen. Hard reset, by pressing the power button for 15 seconds, doesn't work either. PS: the screen is functional because there is some background light, but there is no text.  Thank you in advance.

So I've now got it back and it was working fine for a few days, but then yesterday the screen went black after a while. Have restarted it several times. Sometimes the thing beeps three times, other times it doesn't. But the screen is always black. What's wrong with it? Is there something I can do to fix this or should I send my computer back for repair again?

Answer:Black/blank screen. 3 beeps when turning on computer

If your repairs are being covered under a warranty then definitely send it back. I would be pushing for a replacement rather than a repair given the previous problem.truenorth

I tried all the possibilities, removed RAM , CD Drive, FDD & tried resetting them, but no solution. It seems that it is not detecting my previous HD or some fault occured with my MBD.Please give me the solution.Thanks,Mil...

Answer:Continous Beeps on blank screen. Prob. started after adding new HDD

Yesterday evening, my Z50 had been working normally. I put it on stanby over night, but it was running this morning (with the lid closed). I have observed this behavior on multiple occasions, so I wasn't worried. It seems that Windows sometimes wakes laptops in standby to update overnight. In any case, opening the lid, no image appeared. I closed the lid, computer did not go into standby. So I shut it down and rebooted it by prolongued pressure on the power button. Screen remained blank. Did this a few times, no change. External Monitor is not getting HDMI signal at any stage. Keyboard is unresponsive (caps-lock and num-lock LEDS do not toggle). In fact the only way I can even tell it's running is because the power led is lit and the fan is working. Oh, and it gives a single sharp beep when I plug the power in or out (both ways produce the same beep). That's the only reaction I could get from it. Things I tried, all without any effect whatsoever:Running only on PSU without battery. Running on different PSU without battery.Running on battery without PSU.Unplugging PSU, removing battery, holding power button pressed for a minute, putting battery back in, booting.Booting using the NOVO button. Can't see any way for the usual household remedies like system restore or BIOS reset, as for all I can tell the fan is the only thing even running in there.Currently just leaving it running to drain the battery, but I don't really see what that could accomplish. I have a 3 year old XPS 13 (L321X) ultrabook that has a black/blank screen.  I hooked up the laptop to an external monitor via hdmi and it works fine. So it's the laptop screen that seems to be the problem.  I went through all the suggested troubleshooting from basic to advance. Holding the 'D' at start up, I hear 3 beeps.  If I can see the display on an external monitor, is it still a System board issue? Unfortunately, my warranty expired years ago, so trying to fix this the cheapest means possible.  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Dell XPS blank/black screen issue- diagnosis gives 3 beeps

Thank you for writing to us!
This could be an issue with the LCD or the LCD cable.Ideally it should not be the motherboard as the external monitor works, however we cant rule it out.
Kindly private message the service tag and email address so that we can check and help you further.

I recently decided to order parts and build my first computer (here are the parts):
(I bought two of the memory packages for a total of 4GB, I also thought that the parts were compatable)

I assembled the parts and I thought the only error I might have made was in connecting the power supply to the components. However, when I pressed the power button all the lights and fans went on and I know the disk drive was working. Using a HDMI connection (and I tried VGA), the monitor remained blank. No bios came up and there was no beeping or shutting off or over heating.

Does anyone have any advice? I would really appreciate it.

Hello, Just received my k450e with onboard HD 4600 graphics.  Put in an HD 7570 graphics card (max watts = 60). 2 beeps, blank screen. Bios is Auto for video. 1) Is it the lower power supply that came with the computer = 280 Watts causing no video?2) Will the mother board (bios) take a 980 gtx if I upgrade the power supply. to appropriate specs? Lenovo, please confirm both. It's my first time with you and I don't want to start our relationship with a return. This is a nice desktop for the money. Thank you

Answer:New K450e - Installed Graphics Card, 2 beeps, Blank screen

hi rutenguten,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Regarding your questions:
1. As per this chipset table, the HD 7570 consumes around 10-11W so the 280W PSU should be sufficient to power up this card. Using the onboard HD 4600 graphics, can you try and boot into the BIOS and set the following settings (if applicable):
Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled
Startup / Boot Tab:
CSM = Enabled
Boot Mode = Legacy or Legacy First
When finished, press F10 to Save and Exit and observe if you can now boot from the HD 7570 graphics card. If this works, the UEFI firnware is likely not compatible with the HD 7570 GPU and requires the BIOS to be set to legacy mode.
Relevant article:
After- market graphic card installed on K430 and system cannot boot
2. I haven't seen anyone use a GTX 980 on their K450e but RogerSC posted in this thread that his K450e came with a GTX 760 so a GTX 980 should be possible coupled with the right PSU.

So I have this Dell Mini Inspiron 1018 not in correct working condition. As stated in title:
-Powers on.
-No monitor, completely blank.
-Not hearing any kind of beeping.

Any ideas on a solution?

Answer:Dell Mini Inspiron 1018: Powers On - Blank Screen - No Beeps

Sounds like a display issue, such as a bad LCD or connector.
Try plugging it into a monitor to rule out the possibility of a bad video card.

Was using brand new lap top with universal power cord (dogs had chewed the original).  computer was working fine, was shut down fine last use (with universal power cord being used) Next time tried to boot up without power cord- nothing, with power cord still nothing. screen blank, no beeps. sent back to manufacturer, but was told that universal plug is at fault and therefore warranty does not apply. In researching, it looks like POST failure due to ? power supply cord.  What can I do to correct this? Did this cause something to burn out? If so- what?  Thanks

Answer:laptop won't boot up, screen blank, no clicks, beeps or blinking cursor

It seems that, according the manufacturer, voided the warranty by using a different power cord than what they want.     Unfortunately for you if that cord was indeed the problem and it burnt out the motherboard then unless you can find some sympathetic soul to help you it the you are out of luck.   Alan <><

Hi everyone,
I have a Dell XPS 17 L702x that I was prepping to sell.  The basic specs are:
Intel i7-2760QM
16GB of RAM (4GB x4)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M with 1080p 3D screen
500GB 7200 RPM HDD x2
Windows 10 Pro
Like I said, I was prepping to sell the laptop.  The laptop was functioning properly.  I had wiped the HDDs clean and was in the middle of performing a clean install of Windows 10 pro from a USB drive.  I have done this before and never had a problem.  The install started correctly. I selected the drive that I wanted, and the installer wrote the files to the drive.  The laptop then restarted.  The power came back on, the fan started up, and I could hear the optical drive and HDDs spin up.  However, the screen stayed blank/black, and the Dell splash screen never appeared.  The activity light on the USB drive never comes on.  The normal functions keys do nothing.
Here are some troubleshooting things that I have tried:
I removed the RAM and HDDs.  I get the typical 2 beeps from not having any RAM.  Motherboard seem ok.
I have tested the RAM in my work Latitude E6430.  The E6430 will boot with the RAM from the L702x.  The RAM seems ok.
I have tested each stick of RAM one at a time in various slots in the L702x.  Same problem, blank screen, and no beeps.
I have connected the HDDs to the E6430 with a SATA to USB cable.  I can format and read/write from/to the HDDs.  The HDDs seem ok.

Hi All,
I have been struggling with this problem for more than a week now.
I bought a new video card Conquerer FX5200 Plus (nvidia). After I put it on the mobo and I start up the computer winxp splash screen appears and then it goes blank and there is a continuous short beeping sound. It keeps on going till I do a hard power off.

So I thought Windows is conflicting with earlier drivers and I did a clean XP install once again. The problem still exists.
I tried starting it in safe more and then it stops at loading AGP440.sys and again makes the same sound. So I went ahead and disabled AGP440.sys.

Now Xp boots up and I can do everything but I cannot use any characteristics of the video card. It uses the crappy VGA driver.

Please help me what should I do.

My system:
P4 3.2 GHZ Intel Processor
ASUS P4p800 SE Mobo
Conquerer FX5200 Plus (nvidia) Video Card
Corsair valuselect 2x512 MB DDR 400 RAM
400W power supply.

Answer:WinXP home going blank after splash screen and computer beeps continuosly after that

have you tried downloading the updated drivers for the card.

that mobo supports 1 x AGP8X (1.5V only)

looking at the card its also OK

Hello, when I power up my Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 my laptop beeps 7 times and the monitor remains black, do you have any recommendations for how to resolve?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15R 5537 Beeps 7 times with blank video screen at start up

This is a bad mainboard and/or CPU.  Both are soldered together, so you'll need to replace the board.

Hello Seveners!

I have been having trouble with a BSOD for a while now. It is getting to that extent that I bare it any longer! I need help!

Firstly, these BSOD's have been happening randomly, but normally the case is while it is in sleep, or when I put it to sleep, the screen will go black, but the laptop will refuse to actually sleep. It remains in this state of useless on-ness until either I pull the plug or it decides to BSOD.

I have a program called Soluto, which sends the details of the BSOD to my email. It said the error code was 1000009F and the likely cause was: nt driver.

I ran verifier.exe and restarted. Upon restarting I was constantly greeted by a BSOD informing me that there was a problem with HIDCLASS.SYS. Upon restarting with last known good configuration, I am here, looking for help! There are 6 results for HIDCLASS.SYS on my laptop, all seeming to point to AMD.

I have attached my Minidumps from today (two BSODes), my system NFO and a picture taken of the BSOD when booting after running verifier.exe. They are zipped as one, due to the fact that uploading of NFO files doesn't seem to be supported.

This is getting increasingly infuriating as I am constantly losing work!

System specs can be found on my profile and in the NFO.

I appreciate any help!

Many thanks,

Answer:Numerous BSOD's. Normally caused while in sleep / putting to sleep.

What USB devices have you got installed?

I believe we are looking at a USB device causing a bugcheck.
Do you have a gaming mouse or any mouse drivers installed?

HIDCLASS.SYS appears to be mainly caused by mouse drivers.

Because a lot of driver power state failures are caused by graphics drivers I recommend updating yours as it is very outdated.
Here's some instructions if you are unsure how to update it.

Today I bought a new CPU for my PC (i7 3770), a new graphics card(MSI R9 280x), a new PSU and a new winchester. I used my old 2x4GB rams, and my old motherboard(Asrock z77 pro3). I put them in, and started up my PC. Everything worked fine. I installed Windows 10 on it, and then the drivers. I restarted my PC, after that I heard 5 beeps, and my computer couldn't boot in. It kept doing the 5 beeps, then restarted itself. I turned it off, and then tried to turn it on again, after 4-5 tries, it succesfully loaded in windows. I tought that it might work now, even though it was interesting. I did a restart again, and it did the same thing. After 5-6 tries it finally booted up the Bios. I didn't see anything wrong. I did a restart, so maybe it boots up windows this time. It didn't, it kept doing the same, but it doesnt even boot up Bios. So I tried it with my old i5, same problem. With 2 different RAMs, same problem. Put the RAMs in other slot, same problem. Tried with the old PSU and graphics card, same problem. I tried everything other than changing the motherboard, because I dont have another one, but I dont know how could it go wrong so fast. Sometimes it I heard 4 beeps and not 5 though, but it kinda seemed random. All my cooling fans are working.
Any help with the beeping and not even booting up the bios?
Thank you,

My Lexington board went out after 8 years so I bought a brand new identical one and reassembelled everything, with a new Radian AGP video card also, and when I turned it back on I got 3 long beeps and no startup. I didn't leave it on after that and have not tried it again. I have been trying to read up on the problem but haven't been able to find anything for this board. The chipset is Intel i850 or 1850. The memory is 1g Rambus and a 3.2Ghz processor. Thanks Rick D [email protected]

Why would you bother replacing such an outdated board? Especially one that uses RDRAM? Hopefully you got it for about $10.I believe 3 long beeps means there's a problem with the keyboard.

Dear All
I request all the professionals over here to just let me know the problem and the solution for it.
Yesterday all of a sudden while browsing my laptop (Dell studio 1557 - win 10 - 64 bit - 4 GB Ram - 1 TB HDD - 512 Mb graphics) has stopped responding all of a sudden making a huge buzzing sound, with no option left I have performed force shutdown by pressing the POWER button for a long time.
Later I have tried to start but there is no Display, I can fell that the PC powered up as the cooling fan is rotating and they are no beeps sound immediately after power-on but after about 2-3 min time when ever a key is pressed on the keyboard i can hear a Beep sound (one beep for each key only while pressing) . This is the only thing i can feel and i am unable to know what is the problem.
- I have tried removing the RAM cleaning and putting it back but it didn't help me.
Hoping a solution for the problem kindly help me out.
Thanks in advance

This has been posted in a couple of different threads, but I'd like to get an answer from Lenovo -- Is there any fix on the horizon for the display not coming on when the system unblanks the screen? I am "working around" it, but not letting my laptop display turn off when on AC, but I can reproduce the problem 100% of the time, if I let the laptop sit idle on AC for 30 minutes and then unplug the AC adapter without touching the keyboard or mouse.  The display will blank immediately.  Pressing a key will turn on the backlight, and the OS is clearly awake (disk activity starts up again, etc.), but the screen does not appear.  Pressing the power button will sleep the system, and once it's asleep -- power light throbbing -- I can press the power button again to wake it up, and everything works normally. This is extremely frustrating, because with the battery life as bad as it is, it would be nice to allow it to sleep when I'm on battery, but it's such a pain to get it to wake up again, that I do everything I can to keep it awake for as long as possible. -- pryankster

My daughter has a new Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop.
If it goes to sleep or she closes the lid the screen remains blank.
The laptop requires a restart.
She is away at school so I will need to advise her from home.
Any ideas?
Driver upgrade? hardware problem?

Answer:Screen blank after sleep or closing lid.

I have the same model and I just started getting this exact same issue the other day. While I was working, the screen flickered, went out, then came back after a few seconds, but since then, waking from sleep produces a black screen, with the keyboard still lit and functional.
Despite the black screen, I can still log in and play videos and music if I press the right buttons on my keyboard, so that at least is fine. I have to shut down (via holding down the power button) and restart just to get the screen back on, though restarting this way produces a blue screen (not of death) that says that Windows hasn't started properly.
Does your laptop have the same symptoms? This could be a more widespread issue with a recent update or something.

Sadly, my netbook updated itself with W10 Anniversary update ~ it now restarts with a blank screen after sleep mode and needs the power button pressed for 2 or 3 secs to turn off, followed by a complete restart :-( Having googled the fault, it would appear many folk have suffered the same problem. Current machines can be cured by installing the latest BIOS update, but sadly for me, with a 'legacy' machine which is 'end of life', I do not have that option. Anyone know of a workaround please ?? I LOVE my Ferrari ONE netbook !!! I have posted this on the microsoft forum too ... I don't hold my hopes up; can I go back and undo the Anniversary update ?? Thanks in advance BRgds

We have about 500 laptops with win 7 pro x64. We have had a few complaints that on occation, after a computer wakes up from sleep mode, the user sees the welcome screen, but no text or logon box - i.e. they can't se any text or textboxes, only the background image of the welcome screen. The only way to end this state is to poweroff/reset the machine. Any ideas?

Just a few scattered ideas...

* Has there ever been a BSOD?

* Have you checked in Event Viewer?

Go to the Windows Logs > Application / System > in the left hand column.
Note anything in red that relates to the problem experienced.
Please record the event ID, and the Source Code and tell us what they are.
