Lenovo Thinkpad T420 trackpad and touchpad right/left click stopped working

Question: Lenovo Thinkpad T420 trackpad and touchpad right/left click stopped working

Hi guys, I am trying to maintain my doughter's school aptop but encountered something exceding my limited expertise. Since about 10 days the touchpad, buttons and the red thingie stopped working. I have read all the forum issues, uninstalled the drivers and re-installed new ones (first through the lenovo sulotion centre, then the synaptics generic version). About 6 times now. That didn't work. It says "component not present, not working correctly or divers not fully installed, error 24" (translation from Dutch, probably used some incorrect terms).Running windows 10 on this t420. All worked fine untill this happened. I saw that some new mouse drivers have been installed around the day of malfunction but can't find how or where to remove those (still getting used to this windows 10).Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo Thinkpad T420 trackpad and touchpad right/left click stopped working

So far, there's just 2 of us with trackpoint / touchpad problems as a result of installing Windows 10. My post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T420-Win-10-Pro-Ultra-Nav-19-00-12-61-Tr... I've combed through this forum and have no one else reporting these same issues; most are reporting that left and right click buttons are working, but the middle button did not work. In my case, it was the opposite; the middle button scrolled (albeit very choppy), and the left / right buttons were dead.for my Trackpoint. It's not a hardware issue, as all buttons function as normal in Win 7, but upon installation of Win 10, the buttons do not work. I went so far as to do a clean install of Win 10 to ensure there were no conflicts between Win 10 and any leftover Win 7 system files, only to end up with the same old left and right button problems. So until the Ultra Nav drivers to enable full functionality of trackpoint / touchpad device, the only solution is to use a physical mouse or revert back to your prior operating system.

So I have had a very... VERY... irritating problem with my Thinkpad. For the first 6 or so months I had the laptop it worked fine. Then, the left click on the touchpad was functioning like the right click (bringing up a menu).  I immediately disabled the touchpad and then used the trackpad right and left clicks which worked perfectly. After another 4 or 5 months, those buttons stopped working altogether. I could still use the touchpad to move the arrow, but I couldn't click on anything. I bought an external USB mouse and that worked fine for another 2 months. Then for a few weeks, it would work on and off. I'd have to wiggle it around in the USB ports to get the laptop to recognize it. (it had nothing to do with the ports... there were 3 of them and they all worked fine). Then it stopped working completely, AND, my laptop refuses to acknowledge ANY USB I plug in.  I have run out of options now. I can't even install anything, download any files from lenovo website. I can't do anything. Does anyone know if it is still salvageable? Has anyone had the same problem? The lenovo digitizer for tablets.... would that work for this thinkpad? (sorry... not as tech savvy as the rest of you) Thanks a bunch,Amanda

Go into the BIOS (press F1 during the initial bootup) menu then go into CONFIG -> Keyboard/Mouse -> Disable both the TrackPoint and Touch Pad -> press F10 to save and exit.

Well... Thats about it. My left click was working and then all of a sudden. BANG. stopped. Moving the mouse with the touchpad and using the mousepad to left click still works as does the right click button on the touchpad. Any solutions?

Answer:Left Mouse Click on Laptop Touchpad stopped working

I assume you have checked your settings in Control Panel > Mouse Properties?

It will save a lot of time if you can determine whether this is a hardware problem or a software problem.
Try this: Download a copy of UBUNTU. Put this on a USB stick. Boot from the USB stick and choose to Run The Program (you do not need to install it on your hard drive). Then check to see if the mousepad works OK in UBUNTU. If it does then it is a Windows/Software problem. If it doesn't then it is a defective mousepad.

Hey so this is a strangely specific problem. For some websites I cannot click some drop-down menus with my cordless mouse, the trackpad, or trackpoint buttons, but am able to when I press on the touchscreen. Same with some online games I used to play like: http://shape.method.ac/ In the website above, I can't click and drag where it says to "Drag to get started' (For anyone else maybe experiencing the same problem) with my mouse, but pressing and dragging on the touchscreen works just fine.Stylus doesn't work either.Other items are still clickable.I can open and close windows just fine, most links work, but it's these graphic elements that I can't interface with. I can't tell if this is an OS problem, browser, or something like HTML5 causing it. It happens consistently though. Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi there, So the other night I (quite stupidly) spilt water on my trackpad. I put it straight in the airing cupboard to dry it out for 2 days, and everything works fine except for my trackpad and the left-click button of my trackpoint. Is there anything I can do about this? Is it possible to repair the trackpoint? (I don't use the trackpad)Will sending it back to Lenovo (UK) do anything?

Answer:Spilt water on T420 - Trackpad and Trackpoint L-Click not working

Remove your keyboard and palmrest and clean up everything you can find with Isopropyl alcohol paying close attention to connectors. It doesn't take much to cause an issue with the keyboard connector. If the keyboard is gunked up you can always buy another keyboard on eBay. Good luck

Dear Support,
I have a Dell VOSTRO 3560 laptop that has an Elan Tech SmartPad touchpad. I like its responsiveness very much.
Unfortunately, I recently spilled a bit of coffee and some of that went under the touch pad left and right buttons. The buttons stopped functioning but the touch pad itself is still very good.
Even before the spill I rarely used the buttons. I always used the touch pad to tap to click and two finger tap to right-click.Strangely though, after the spill when the hardware buttons stopped working, the tapping on the touch pad also stopped working. I made sure that the touch pad still can do tap clicking by uninstalling the Dell TouchPad driver and reverting to the Microsoft Mouse PS2 driver. In that case I can use the tap to click feature but only for 1 finger tap. I do not get any other feature as the driver is the simple generic MS one.
My question is would it be possible to still use the Elan tech provided (Dell TouchPad) driver and somehow configure it to accept the tap to click and two finger tap to right-click? This in addition to all the remaining scrolling and gesture support that the driver implements? I tried all the Dell Touchpad settings applet but nothing changed. Perhaps a registry value setting in the section for the elantech?
What seems to be happening now is that the driver is doing some hardware diagnostics, determining that the hardware buttons left and right are not working, and consequently completely disabling left and right click comm... Read more

When scrolling with the index finger on my right hand I will regularly hover over and lightly touch the left button with my left index finger in anticipation of the link/button/text box etc that I am about to click on. I have always done this an never encoutered any issues on the numerous laptops I have owned and used in the past). When I do this on my newly axquired Lenovo Yoga 900 it causes the mouse pointer to lag momentarily. I have updated drivers (v19.0.17.57), I have turned off ALL Multi-Finger options (2-finger, 3-finger and 4-finger) and reduced Palm Tracking to the minimum. Is this behavior isolated to me, or are other experiencing the same behavior? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thinkpad Yoga:Lately the click function doesn't work fine, only 20% of the time it actually reacts. The left and right click section do not work at all anymore. The tap for left and two finger tap for right do work.An external mouse works perfect. ThinkPad UltraNav Driver 18.0.7.40 installed 5-may-2014... that's about the time the issue started!!I reinstalled (via control panel, etc) the older version 18.0.7.34 which was on the system since 7 april 2014, reboot and the touchpad does work again. The left and right click section also ok again. So there seems to be an issue with ThinkPad UltraNav Driver 18.0.7.40 on the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga .... ???

Answer:Issue with left click on trackpoint, touchpad and mouse - Lenovo T61

Hello,

A few things to try:

?  Create a new user account, login using that and see if the problem still occurs.  If the problem goes away, then it is due to software running under your user account.
?  Start Windows in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs.  If the problem goes away, it was due to an application which runs on startup.
?  Boot the computer from a Linux Live CD/USB and see if the problem still occurs.  If it does, then the problem is not due to the operating system and you are dealing with a hardware issue.

In the case of the latter, the usual fix would be to replace the keyboard.

I'm baffled.  I can move the pointer all day long with the touchpad, but I cannot select anything by tapping nor with the left and right buttons.  According the BIOS, everything with the ultranav seems normal and active.  I cracked open the palmrest and checked the connection too... looks sat.  Additionally, the fingerprint reader is working fine.  I checked the ultranav in device manager... device appears to be working properly.  I'm running a virus scan right now to rule out any possibility of a conflict. The only positive outcome to this problem is I'm getting better at keyboard navigation  If anyone has any suggestions, please reply.  Thanks in advance!

Answer:Lenovo Yoga Touchpad Left/Right Click Hardware Button Sensitivity

I would suspect that the hard buttons of the touchpad cannot be changed as a mechanical attribute of the hardware. However, I might suggest that the hard buttons of the touchpad may not have to be used very often given the existence of touch alternatives. For example, I'm sure you use the left-click tap gesture often, but also a right-click gesture of simply tapping two fingers anywhere at once may be used instead of having to press the hard button from the bottom-left corner. Additionally, dragging may be accomplished with a double-tap and hold gesture on the touchpad. For instance, to move a window on the desktop, simply double-tap the window title bar but keep a finger down after the second tap. From there objects may be moved/dragged as if a physical button was held. So perhaps with the touch-only drag and right-click gestures you may rely less on use of the hard buttons, and save some strain on your fingers..?

Hi everybody, My left-click has stopped working on my Thinkpad T420s. I've tried all the methods of doing it on the laptop - by clicking the button below the touchpad, clicking the button above the touchpad, tapping the touchpad, and tapping the red trackball. None of these ways works. Not sure if it's a hardware or software problem, but if it's software, what might be the issue? Thanks.

Answer:Left mouse click not working on buttons or touchpad

Go into the BIOS menu, in under 'Config' -> 'Mouse + Keyboard'. Disable the Trackpad, save and exit. See whether the TrackPoint left click works. If it doesn't, then go into the BIOS again, disable the TrackPoint and Enable the TrackPad.Your problem maybe cause by either the TrackPad or TrackPoint left click button's circuitry short-circuiting.

I have a brand new Satellite L50 CI3 laptop. However, it seem there is a fault with the left and right buttons on the touchpad.

The right click behaves like a left click i.e. it does not open a menu.

The left click cannot drag and drop, this includes when using scroll bars.

I've reinstalled everything but nothing has changed. Is this a common problem? Is this likely to a problem with the hardware or software?

Answer:Touchpad right/left click is not working properly on Satellite L50

Hi

On this virtual way it is not easy to say what is wrong there. Have you noticed this issue from he first day of usage?
I mean when you start your notebook for the first time it has original factory settings and everything should be OK.

If I understand you right there is some reaction when you use touchpad buttons so what you can try is to set all touchpad options to default settings.

Tried to do a system restore but going bacl one day didnt fix it and attempt to restore older than that failed.

Any ideas, really annoying

Answer:G580 Touchpad Click stopped working

hi rob_s_smith,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Do you get the same problem if you're running in battery power?

If you don't, and the Touchpad is working ok when it's working on the battery then the touchpad board is probably getting grounded when it's connected to the charger - see this thread as it's similar to the problem.

If problem perist on battery and AC power then you may need to contact lenovo for service as the touchpad is showing an imminent failure.

Hope this helps

Dear all:

New to the forum.  Thanks in advance to anyone able to help.  I have two issues that seem to be related.  Today at some point I could not longer use my right or left click buttons on my laptop.  The touchpad still works in the sense that I can move my cursor and if I tap once on the touchpad (not the left/right buttons) then it will select a link.  There is no right-clicking capabilities on the touchpad itself.
I "attempted" to reinstall the driver.  Not sure if I was successful doing that, but seeing as how half of the touchpad functionality works, I'm not positive it's a driver issue.
After restarting my laptop I tried again to click on the left/right buttons and became frustrated and wanted to see if they were stuck, so I pressed down hard.  My laptop proceeded to shut off immediately.  Frustrated, I disassembled my laptop and checked out the touchpad sensor to see if I could spot something wrong.  Everything appeared to be in tact.  I reassembled and the laptop powered on, yeahh!!
I once again tried to press the buttons and nothing happening.  Again I pressed harder than normal and the laptop shut down.  I was going to disassemble it again however I got halfway before trying to power it on and the laptop powered on again.
My first issue is:  Why is my laptop suddenly shutting off when pressing hard on those buttons?
My second issue is:  How can I fix those button... Read more

I'm creating this post just fyi should it help anyone else with this problem. Here's what I tried and, at least in my case, how i solved a "mouse left click doesn't work" problem

I have a Logitech wireless laser mouse and use rechargeable AA batteries. The other morning i powered on my computer as usual and tried using my Logitech wireless mouse but left click didn't work (although rt click and mouse movement continued working just fine)

Things i first tried that didn't help:
> Reinstalling Logitech Setpoint and mouse drivers
> Reinstalling Logitech USB transceiver firmware
> Pressing the "reconnect" button on the USB transceiver to reconnect transceiver to wireless mouse
> Changed the mouse batteries a couple times and also tried recently recharged batteries

Then i had a hunch (well, it was really more of a last ditch hopeful guess - but it seems to have worked!)
I removed the batteries and let the mouse sit overnight without any battery inside it. When i put batteries back in the next morning, the mouse has been working fine again ever since. Go figure :stickout:

Hey. I bought this laptop couple months ago and suddendly touchpad's right click isn't working anymore. Is it about settings or drivers or is this broken or what...?

Answer:Edge E530c - Touchpad right click stopped working :(

there is no settings for it. If the right click stops working, it means your touchpad right click key is stuck or broken, and as such should seek warranty.

my touch pad has started to act strange.

the left hand mouse button stopped working completely and the right hand one only worked intermittently, and whenever i clicked on tabs, whether it was firefox, IE, Safari, or anything in the menu bar at the bottom such as a folder or anything it would close it (no im not clicking the red X)

Then suddenly after a while it would all start working again. This has happened twice now.
Completely rebooting the system does nothing it just starts suddenly and stops suddenly but the periods for which it occurs seems to be getting longer.

Also the little touchpad icon in the corner with the cross through it decided to turn its self on a few days ago and i found out the touchpad had disabled on its own and figured out how to re-activate it.

I know its not a virus as ive run lots of different anti viruses on my system, and wondering if its time to take the computer back into the shop and get a replacement as ive only had it 4 months

Its really annoying as im a photographer and rely on this laptop for phot o editing. can someone please help :)

Hi

From my personal opinion you should not replace this notebook until you did not try some workarounds.
First of all you don?t know if its software related issue.
The point is that if its software issue, you could solve this easily recovering the notebook using the HDD recovery option.

Please try to set the notebook back to factory settings using HDD recovery.

Hello. Last week a got a brand new ThinkPad E460 factory sealed for work. And it've had troubles with it out of the box, I have a ThinkPad T450s private and have never experienced anything like this on my private laptop. So of the bath to tends to freeze at Lenovo logo in BIOS boot screen. And I have to press a bunch of keys for it to continue. I think I might have fixed this issue by disableing secure boot and anti-theaft. It didn't always happen, but it happend every morning at work. I disabled these features now so I can't confirm or deny if that problem is competely ficked. I have of coruse updated the BIOS and all drivers. My second issue is that EVERY time, not only when I restart but also if I sign out of my account and back in again is that my TouchPad refuse to work if I don't click a key (any key) on the lenovo keyboard in addition to this left arrow key is in a loop. This is really annoying as I use this with a dock at my workplace. If I move the coursor to a textfield with my external mouse or the Trackpoint (that works fine regardless if I click on the keyboard or not) I will see the corusing being moved to the left contantly untill I click a key at the keyboard. What is going on? These issues seems really strange to me and not something you'd epxect.

Answer:ThinkPad E460 - TouchPad Will not work untill lenovo keyboard is pressed and arrow left is in a loop

I have not had the POST freeze problem, although I did have a bug with Yubikey, I had to push the Yubikey button twice to input the second part of my long VeraCrypt password, this was solved with a BIOS update.. Also my right speaker sounds broken on higher volumes, and OSD brightness bar is stuck on screen after waking up from S3 suspend, but goes away if I adjust the brightness with the keys on the keyboard. I do also have the TouchPad lockup problem! I have noticed the same, random lockups of the TouchPad. The TrackPoint works but the TouchPad locks up. It is restored by pushing a keyboard key or the TrackPoint mouse keys, or just leaving the TouchPad alone for a while (5-10 seconds). I got this machine with Windows 10 pre-installed but decided to go back to Windows 7 since Windows 10 has been nothing but a big PITA. I didn't notice this problem on Windows 10, but I have plenty of other Windows 10 specific problems. After installing all the latest drivers available for E460 (latest available from the site at the time, September 2016) this problem popped up. Current driver: 8.216.1616.135 I just checked System Update and noticed an update for the ALPS ThinkPad UltraNav Driver, so I'll update and check back (if I remember). New driver: 8.216.1616.151[Problem fixes]- Fixed an issue related to TouchPad Cursor no response in a short time after resume from S3 by lid close Maybe this have or will fix your TouchPad problem too.

Dear all, I appreciate a lot if you could guide me to solve the problem on my touchpad with respect to left and right clicks. Just a remark that one and double left clicks work well for making a selection on a word, but I cannot do the right click or select some text using left click and swiping. Nothing happens when I click them. This issue started recently; might be related to installing my anti-virus program; Im not sure... Hope this issue is finally solved...Thanks a lot in advance for your help !K. Bulut

Answer:Lenovo Yoga 11S left/right click are not working

My Yoga 3 Pro also has touchpad issues. I typiclally only L-click, tap(L-click), and R-click. I disable all synaptics features except the 3 I mentioned( L-click, tap(L-click), and R-click). Ok, Here is what I know after upgrading to Windows 10.Using Synaptics Generic IC2 driver Or Lenovo Synaptics Win10 Drivr or the Windows 10 Update Driver, R-click button acts as L-click and R-click simultaneously. When I uninstal Lenovo's driver and Synaptics driver and the Windows Update driver, then hide the Windows Update driver using a Microsoft tool for hiding updates, it works using Microsoft Windows 10 drivers just fine for me (No 2 finger/3 finger/4finger/whatever other multi-touch stuff). I have tried 2 finger tap to R-click, but L-click occurs at the same time as the R-click function. So. Currently I am using the native Windows 10 driver. No Lenovo Synaptic/No Generic Synaptic, and hide the Windows Update Synaptic Update and it works for me at this moment for a touchpad that works like a mouse. As far as multi-touch, I give up. Any suggestions, fixes, ideas are appreciated. Kirk

I've tried rebooting my 3rd Gen. X1 Cabon a few times but can't seem to get the touchpad Tap to Click function working again.  It stopped working after the recent BIOS update and it seems all finger gestures on the touchpad are now disabled.  Tap to Click is checked in the Touchpad settings and I've toggled it on and off a few times.  I'm on the latest Synaptics touchpad driver (19.0.17.2).   Any suggestions to kickstart touchpad gestures again?

I have had this notebook for a few years and it has performed well. Today however I brought it out of hibernation mode, and it beeped. The keyboard and touchpad were not working. I restarted the computer and it beeped as it was loading, giving a message that said "Keyboard not detected." Once windows booted up, same problem. I shut down and restarted, same problem. I then unplugged everything, took the battery out, put it back together, and now it works fine. I'm a little concerned about this. Is this an indication of a possible hardware failure, or could something else more innocuous be causing it? Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone, I'm really struggling with using my Cube Mix Plus tablet in laptop mode. With the keyboard connected, doesn't matter if I use the trackpad or mouse, when I click on certain things they just flash up momentarily then disappear. Including the mouse settings window, annoyingly. And the start menu. It works OK for maybe a minute after login then starts acting up.

So far I've disabled the windows key, and installed an autokey script that is supposed to disable trackpad gestures. Still the same issue though.

Here's a video of it happening (those are all left clicks, I know I click quite rapidly at points but it's each single click doing the flash-up-and-disappear thing, happens when I go much slower too)

Any suggestions or help much appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Windows10 (64-bit) - Lenovo Z50-70 Touchpad stopped working

Hi there, Sohailur                    -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

Just found the same problem with my lenovo Z50. Touch pad completely non responsive.

Under start menu, settings, devices, mouse & touchpad, additional mouse options, elan tab. The elan touchpad settings were completely grayed out and unavailable.

So from there I went to the window search in the task bar and typed in "computer management? and opened the computer management desktop app. Under device manager selected mice and other pointing devices and then elan input device. In the elan properties window that opened I selected uninstall to uninstall the driver and in the next box that opened warning that the driver was about to be uninstalled l checked the delete driver and then OK. Then restarted windows. In the process of restarting windows detected the elan touchpad as a new device and installed the driver in time for the login screen. So my elan touch pad is now working again.

Here is the link to download the Lenovo Windows 10 driver for the touchpad from our support site.  -> TouchPad Driver Windows 10

I have a user that has a 2nd Generation X1 Carbon (the type with virtual buttons on the Synaptics TrackPoint/TrackPad.   The user is complaining that a context sensitivie menu (of the type that a right click would initiate) intermittently is shown when she left clicks.  She normaly uses the TrackPad but does use the TrackPoint on ocassion.  Here's what I've done so far: 1) I initially thought it was the TrackPad and had Lenovo Support replace it.  The problem was reduced but is still occurs. 2) I've installed current UltraNav drivers and updated all other drivers to current levels.  The WIndows 10 is also updated to current patches.  I would try setting the UltraNave to "Click Anywhere" but that disables the TrackPoint feature that is ocassionally used.  Has anyone seen this happen before and know a fix for this?

So there's a huge thread, set to sticky as many people have had trouble with their touchpads turning off, quite randomly at that.  It's a wonder Lenovo hasn't got the point and fixed it yet.  Anyway, NONE of the solutions worked for me.  Except one guy mentioned something, and I realized he was completely right!. What I did try:Turn on and off the touchpad to reset it.Install a new Synaptics Touchpad driver.Write customer support.Did a little chant, dance, and jig.No luck  What WorkedI relized that it was hardware, and the guy had mentioned how he had a loose connection.  When I press down pretty hard on the mouspad, and/or keyboard, it generally starts working again. (with full palm for most surface area, as I'm still not quite sure exactly where that point of contact is).  I took apart my laptop, and didn't have much luck fixing it.  Partly because I wasn't able to easily access the connection between the touchpad and motherboard (I'm using the edge e420.  On my r52, that connnection was easy to access.)  And I couldn't confirm that the connection between the keyboard and motherboard was entirely unrelated.  Anyway, I need to look at the manuals and figure out how to get to that connection, but for now, pressing down on the touchpad/keyboard does the trick.  "What it comes to computers, anything its possible.  It's just a matter of how."

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge Touchpad - Not working

I feel like my head is going to explode.  I've searched the forum and read what seems like hundreds of complaints about the touchpad not working on the Thinkpad Edge.  I've had my Thinkpad E420 for a week and the touchpad does not work but the pointer device does . . .  I don't mind updating or installing . . . whatever. . . . but it seems that this had been unsuccessful most of the time.  I'm a 50-something year old woman who is fairly computer-savvy (so I thought).  I researched laptops for two months before I bought -- came down to the Lenovo and Toshiba.  I picked the Lenovo b/c of what I hoped would be good durability.  My hubby said take it back to the store (I have about a week left to do this).  He is an HP computer-person (I don't care for HP).  All things considered, if I could have afforded it,  I would have bought a Mac   Is there anything new with this problem or am I'm just going to fall into the same rabbit hole as everyone else?  Thx.

Repeated restarts don't seem to remedy the situation, and pressing the F6 button (enabling/disenabling touchpad) does not work as well. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem? Thanks.

Answer:Lenovo U330p Touchpad stopped working suddenly

hi Mouldy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Try Unplugging the system from AC.
Turn the system on Then hold the Power button down till it shuts OFF and continue holding the Power button down after shutoff till another 15 sec.

If the touchpad worked again,
Go to Control Panel / Power Options / Change power setting / Advanced Power Settings and turn on hybrid Sleep.

Let me know your findings
Cheers!

My son has just purchased a Satellite P850 laptop to use for school work and gaming and has noticed a problem with the behaviour of the touchpad.

When using the touchpad, if you have one finger in the area of the touchpad used for mouse movement, and then try to click the right hand mouse button, the laptop behaves as if you clicked the left mouse button. If you click the right hand mouse button when you are not touching the mouse movement area, it behaves correctly.

We have tried changing various touchpad settings but have not been able to correct this problem. We have also updated the drivers for the touchpad to the latest version from the Synaptics website, but the problem still exists.

Is there a particular driver or setting that gives the correct behaviour of the right hand mouse button whilst still touching the touchpad with the other finger?

Answer:Satellite P850 - Right click on touchpad acting like a left click

> When using the touchpad, if you have one finger in the area of the touchpad used for mouse >movement, and then try to click the right hand mouse button, the laptop behaves as if you clicked >the left mouse button
Sorry but I use touchpad too but in moment when I use one of the touchpad buttons I don?t touch touchpad area at this moment. I have two Toshiba notebooks and I tried to test this on both of them but none of them react on the way described in your posting.

As far as I know such behaviour can be result of ?confused? touchpad.
>... when you are not touching the mouse movement area, it behaves correctly.
In my opinion it is the right way to use touchpad correctly. I don?t think you can change anything using some other touchpad driver. Preinstalled driver is tested and I think the right one.

PC:Thinkpad p50Type: 20EQOS: Win 10 ProSynaptics Pointing Device driver: 19.3.4.37, from 9/8/2016  Problem: The left button performs a double click when a single click event is called. It is definatelly a driver issue since the problem was not present when the lenovo trackpad driver was uninstalled. Different workarounds has been exploited, such as: reinstall, update, button switch, etc.In addition, the problem can easilly verified by going to : http://unixpapa.com/js/testmouse.htmland testing the buttons. Lenovo, there are high class machines and the drivers must behave within a high level of accuracy. Since I wasn't able to find out how to file a bug report, I'm posting the issue here and I hope that the proper attention will be applied. If you need further information about that certain issue, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hello community,

I've recently purchases a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 540 and it worked just fine untill earlyer today (bought it around mid June). While i was browsing the internet, some how my touchpad developed a problem. It only registeres right click where ever i click.I've deleted the drivers, even tho they were the knewest ones, downloaded a fresh .exe and installed it after the reset and what not and it still has the same problem. If i turn off the touchpad in the ultranav software and enable only trackapad, the buttons work like they should, the large area in the touchpad registeres as the left click and the small area in the top right is registered as the right click. Tho i can't use the touchpad for navigation.
So clicking doesn't works, well neither does tapping. I can doubletap normaly, but i cannot tap and drag such as selecting a block of text.
Again, i've already tried a fresh install of ultranav drivers and it didn't work. The problem manifested itself during normal browsing, nothing was installed nor changed hardware vise. It litteraly changed in a second. It's a really strange problem and i have no idea how to solve it since the driver reinstall didn't work.

I appreciate any help, thanks.

Build 14316
So I came home after a long day to find that my laptop was registering my left clicks as right clicks for some reason.
In case you're wondering; nope I did not install anything recently unless you count a security update pushed by MS, but I doubt that's what caused this, because I installed that yesterday and the laptop was working fine until 30 minutes ago.
Solution?
Keep in mind that since your mouse/touchpad isn't working properly, you'll be working with the arrow + "enter" keys to do all of this.
Head into settings (win + i key combo) > Devices > Mouse & touchpad
This will open the Mouse options window, but to get to the options you need to scroll down to the last option on the left side of the window ( using the arrow keys obviously) which is "USB" then hit the "tab" key and you should jump to the actual Mouse options.
If done correctly the box under "select your primary button" should be highlighted. So now all you have to do is hit enter and select "left"
Bit of a crude explanation. Hope you can follow it, but if you have any questions go ahead and ask.
Just thought I should post this in case anyone else runs into this

I just bought a refurbished ThinkPad T420. A friend of mine said it had a good spec so I was looking forward to having a play around. Right from the minute I switched it on there was a problem. The touchpad and mouse are not working. The only way to use the mouse is via the track point (is that the right term?) and I hate it! It's way too fiddly. So I tried fn and F8... it doesn't work. I've tried rebooting and enabling the touchpad in the BIOS it doesn't work. I've deleted drivers. Still nothing. I've installed new drivers. Many tutorials say you can fix it using device manager, mouse etc. But the tab the recommend you choose is not there. I installed new drivers from synaptics and it says there is no synsptics device found. I am honestly going insane! Something that should be so simple and it's so awkward! Forgive me because I'm half asleep but I should mention when I first tried to fix it the tab in mouse properties that everyone says I should use (ultra something) well it was there. But when I tried to click any of the options on that tab I was kicked out and got an error messsge. Now that tab no longer appears. It's running on windows 10. I'm ready for launching it out the window. Help!

Answer:ThinkPad T420 touchpad issue

Congrats on your T420. They are nice machines. I'm sorry to hear about your issue. Hopefully, a few little things will solve it.

Make sure it is enabled in BIOS.
Make sure all drivers are updated from both Windows Update & Lenovo System Update. (reboot as necessary)
Confirm that Device Manager does not have any devices marked as not working correctly.
Go Mouse Settings
Click "Additional mouse options"
Make sure "Enable TouchPad" is clicked (mine is grayed out because I have it turned off in my BIOS)

Let me know if you have any issues. I suggest connecting an external USB mouse, if you have one, to the computer to decrease your aggravation level while you work on the issue. If none of that works, I would contact the people that you purchased the refurbished ThankPad through. The TouchPad part may not be functioning.

Hello! I have had my ThinkPad since fall of 2011, and have not experienced this issue until this morning. My left clicker has been intermittently turning into the right-click function. When I go to left click on something, it acts as if I have right clicked it. Pressing right-click yields the same result. What can I do to restore the left click function? The only workaround I have right now for when it keeps wanting to right-click is to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and wait about ten seconds, then I have limited use of the left click function. But then the right click function does not work at all. Please help!

This may be a silly question, but are the right and left clicks for the touchpad suppose to be silent? I've been using a wireless mouse since I got the laptop and only realized the touchpad right and left clicks are silent when my mouse broke and I had to start using the touchpad.  If not, does it mean something's broken, or is it something I can customize? And if it's customizable, how can I get the clicks back? I'm afraid I might press too hard or something and break the touchpad. I need those clicks. Help please.

I've only had my T420 for a couple of weeks but so far I really like it.  I reminds me of a mini version of the W520.  My T420 has the i7 processor, NVIDIA Optimus and most of the options.  I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and currently have the Intel Series 510 120GB SSD in the primary bay.  I am waiting for a Samsung Series 830 SSD to arrive. No complaints so far.  It runs nice, quiet and cool. If I were going to improve anthing on the machine, it would be the screen.  The 1600x900 AUO screen on mine is fair but I can live with it.  I bought this machine new on eBay for an excellent price. I am using the 6 cell battery right now and get a little over four hours of battery life. The 9 cell is quite a bit better but I like the flush lighter 6 cell. Love the keyboard.  The trackpad is fair but I haven't tweaked the Ultranav settings yet.  Been using a mouse mose of the time. I have several ThinkPads and I think the T420 is an excellent balance of power and features.  I am comparing it to my X301, T410s, T61p and W510.  I added a 34mm USB 3.0 ExpressCard (still testing). After my experience with the W520 random shutdowns, I won't be totally comfortable with this machine for a couple of months but it's looking really good so far.  I am optimistic.

Answer:Problem with right and left click functions on touchpad

Check please options for left and right touchpad buttons. For each of them you can define the action.
These options you can find in additional touchpad settings.

Can you find it?

I have a brand-new EliteBook 840 running Windows 10. The left touchpad button sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It's like this: If I click a second time (or a third time) with the left button, without having moved the cursor (not double click, but two separated clicks), then the computer doesn't respond to the click. If I click by tapping on the touchpad area (instead of pressing the button) then everything is fine. But I don't like tapping! If I click with an external mouse connected via USB then everything is fine. If I move the cursor and then click, then it works. The problem is very annoying because each time the computer doesn't respond to the clicks, I have to move the cursor and then click again.

My left click button appears to no longer be responsive.  I've checked the buttons settings and it is set as primary, normal drag, etc...... It doesn't appear to be a problem with the button(hardware) as I still get a strong click action, just doesn't appear to process the click logically. I searched the board and didn't find anything specific to this. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the Synaptics touchpad driver but still nothing on the left click....... Thanks. Geoff

Answer:S10 - Left click button below the touchpad is non-responsive....anyone else?

Sounds like a hardware problem. But you can help verify by plugging-in a USB mouse.Let us know!

A really strange behavour happens on my E460: when I use touchpad to left click on a file, it becomes a mouse hold, which means if I move the mouse pointer at this moment, the file is dragged. I can only release the mouse hold by doing a mouse click again. It really makes a lot of trouble as it causes me to accidentally drag some files. Also, when I am using excel, when I click on a cell, due to the mouse click becomes a mouse hold, so when I move the mouse pointer, it begins to highlight a range of cells. I tried to updated the BIOS, and also update to the latest touchpad driver, but none of them solve the problem. I can only solve the problem by removing the touchpad driver, but this cause all the useful features (e.g. scrolling by using 2 fingers) disappear. Also, it causes another problem. When I'm using excel, I can't double click a cell to edit the text inside. I need to triple click to edit, which is very strange. So removing the touchpad driver can solve one problem but bringing two other problems........ Anyone had such kind of issues too? Any way to solve it? Thanks.

Hi everyone, I just bought a Thinkpad Yoga 14 S3 and I have an issue with the ALPS touchpad.Whenever I click the touchpad (physical click not tap) with a finger on it, it opens the right click menu...This is very annoying as I always use two finger, one for moving the cursor around and one for clicking.I have the lastest touchpad driver (8.216.1616.137) and I am on windows 10. I tried any possible solution I could think of with no luck:- Went through the touchpad option thousand times.- Tried changing entries in Regedit (change Enable2Click to 0), and what it did was that is now does not recognize it as a right click, but not as a left click either. When I click with the finger on the touchpad, the cursor now jumps but does not register any click. Any ideas on how to solve the issue? Thanks in advancePierre

Answer:Problem with left click on ALPS Touchpad

I have exactly the same problem on my Thinkpad E460! This almost makes my laptop unusable. Please update this driver asap Lenovo. P.S. If you uninstall the ALPS driver and use the standard Windows PS2/Mouse driver, this problem does not occur. However there is no setting (at least I did not find one) which allows you to disable 2 click. Also scrolling and gestures do not work with the Windows PS2/Mouse driver.

Have new model E560-20EVS09V00 Installed Windows 7x64 pro with drivers from LENOVO web site.Problem: touchpad left click works like right, right like left.  Brought notebook to service center. First they informed that drivers were not installed and they installed right ones.I checked it with their drivers, same result as before. Service center took it for second diagnostics and informed later that this is design of the touchpad. It has only one physical key, right and left clicks imitated by software. It is necessary to click in the corners of the touchpad. I have cheked it at home and found that when you put 2 fingers on the touchpad and click in one corner, it works like the other corner. Looks like design and drivers of touchpad are defective. Is it possible to fix this problem?

Whenever I use my touchpad and left click, it sometimes right clicks. To temporarily remedy this, I would just right click to make it stop. I already resetted my laptop to its factory settings because of it. Before I factory resetted it, it would constantly happen all the time and also the scrolling would not work and it would select stuff on the desktop screen by itself. However, it is still happening. I did all the lenovo driver updates that Thinkvantage System update tells me to do. It is happening less frequently after I resetted it to factory settings but it is still annoying. This problem somehow occurs much less frequently if I use an external mouse.

Hello everyone,
so I own a dv6tqe-7000, and I've had a strange problem. Sporadically, the left/primary click function on my touchpad would disable. I can still use the touchpad itself and the right click function but left clicking or tapping to click will not work.

I switched the functions in Synaptics (Right click to primary click, and left click to secondary click), and the left click ended working but the primary function still did not respond (ie. Right click didn't work). So I don't think it's a hardware issue.

There are some 'fixes' to this as I've discovered:
- Restart the laptop
- Kill explorer.exe function and re-open it
- Hold both mouse buttons down and move the touchpad around for half a minute. I don't know how or why this works but I read it on a post. Only tested one time though so don't read too much into it.

I've tried removing the battery and replugging it in. I'm also on the latest driver on Synaptics (I updated to the new one after it first occured, still happens). I am also on the latest BIOS. What is the problem and what could I do? Could it be the drivers (Should I uninstall Synaptics/touchpad in Device manager and do a clean install)?

I've found a couple people with the same problem but have yet to find a solution. Again, it is a sporadic event and honestly doesn't occur too often. Any advice would be appreciated.

Question: I believe that at some point I *delayed* the start-up of the left mouse click function on my Synaptics TouchPad.
Unfortunately, I don't remember how I did this. It was definitely done unintentionally at a time when I was attempting to streamline the start-up.

Answer:left click mouse touchpad delayed

When you say delayed do you mean that the left mouse button does not work for a certain period of time? What happens if you try to push the button before this delayed period is up? A good place to start is to possibly try reinstalling the synaptic software and see where you get from there.... What is the specific model of your pc?

JameZ,

I have been experiencing the same problem on my X301 with my touchpad and built-in mouse left/right click buttons.

All of sudden, my touchpad and built-in mouse left/right click buttons stop working.  Alt Cltr Del and clicking on Cancel temporarily returns functionality in the left mouse button and left touchpad button, but not the right buttons on the built-in mouse or touchpad.

I tried to roll-back the driver, but it did not fix the problem.  I also tried an older driver, and no go.

I look forward to the release of the new driver.

Answer:X301 - TouchPad right/left click issue

@btbruner,In regards to your issue, I've read through your PM to me as well. However your issue seems to be different as the drivers for yours are only applicable for the X300 and X301. Also the TouchPad for the X301 has 2 types as well which is the Synaptics one and the Alps TouchPad. Since based on your PM, the TouchPad for your X301 is Alps. Did you have this issue when you first got your X301? Is there any 3rd party application which you have installed after you factory restore the machine such as anti-virus programs?//JameZ
