I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad T400 Wi-Fi activity Light wont light up

Hi Matt,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Is only the Wifi LED indication is not showing or all the LED indication not showing?

I am using T400 laptop, recently a month back I had a problem with battery charging, which when contacted lenovo support they asked me to perform the battery re-set, which I did and now my battery is charing well, but now the problem is battery indicator light beside the wireless, caps-lock indicator is blinking orange even thought my battery is well charged and when cursor is placed on the power manager it is showing battery remaining status which is fine, but along with that it is also showing Battery 2: Error detected. And when opened power manager, even there I am seeing Main battery condition as good and second battery condition as error. Can anyone please let me know why would this error come and how to resolve it? By any chance would T400 will have 2 batteries? Please let me know if you need any thing else.

Just recently the battery light and mains light on my T400 laptop remains on even when I have turned the laptop off and correctly shut it down. This has just only started happening recently. I haven't changed anything or downloaded any new drivers etc. I have taken the battery off and put it back on again, restarted the laptop but makes no difference. Has anyone any ideas? Thanks

I've had my ThinkPad for about four months and have noticed a small patch on the LCD WXGA+ /w LED BL display that appears brighter than the rest of the display.  The problem is most noticeable on light backgrounds with the brightness turned up high. The patch is about the  size of a dime. I was wondering what the problem might be, whether it would be covered by warranty and how long it would take for this to be fixed via warranty? Thanks, for your help.

Answer:Light patch on ThinkPad T400 WXGA+ LED BL display

this light spot is due to a pressure spot, or there is a distortion in the LCD polarising film due to some heavy pressure. You would need to get the LCD changed, i think it is covered under warranty.

I have an A300D 16C on Windows Vista home premium and the touch sensitive lights wont light up when I press the first button to make them light up but the lights are still working just not permantly on which I want the equium sign at the bottom should light up.

Thanks

Answer:Equium A300D-16C touch sensitive light wont light up

Hello Jonny

Those buttons are controlled by ?Toshiba Button Support? utility and this utility is part of Value Added Package. To be honest I don't know if there is some way to enable/disable the buttons functionality but if you want you can try to do follow:

Remove preinstalled VAP from the system (Control Panel > Programs and Features), restart the notebook and install latest VAP for your notebook model listed on Toshiba Support page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads.

Please let me know if everything works well again.

Hi Wacky78900,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Y500 Laptop is not turning ON after playing game and turning OFF manually, I suggest you to perform the Flee-Power and check the issue. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

If the issue persists even after performing the Flee-Power and as the computer is in warranty, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance. Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Do post us back for further queries.

Best Regards

Answer:My thinkpad logo red dot LED light next to the keyboard does not light up

What model ThinkPad do you have?  Offhand I can't think of any ThinkPad where the red dot on the "ThinkPad" logo next to the keyboard lights up.  Only the one on the lid lights up.

Hello out there, I wanted to do a fresh post about this issue as I see that no one has resolved it yet. My Lenovo Thinkpad 12's f1 key has an indicator light that is supposed to turn on or off depending on if it is muted or not. However, after upgrading to Windows 8.1 pro, it seems that the light has been on ever since. It could be unrelated, as this is simply when I started noticing the issue, but it's worth noting. Specs:ThinkPad Yoga 12Windows 8.1 Proi5, 128 Gb SSD, 8 GB RAM Troubleshooting already tried:Restarting the machineTurning the machine on / offInstalling Windows updatesInstalling Lenovo updates (note I did not do all of them as some were only recommended and not required and I did not want a bunch of bloat ware on my PC)Plugging in a wired headset and toggling the f1 key

Answer:ThinkPad Yoga 12 f1 key light always on - wont shut off

Double posting my solution here in: Download and install the Hotkeys Integration for Windows 8.1: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-yoga-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Hope this works for you.

Hello
Bit of a long 1 this.A while ago I had a problem with the power connector on my laptop. When I opened it up I could see the little jack had come away from the mother board,so a bit of soldering was in order,it did the trick and it worked fine. Then the same problem again so out with the solder. Now when I plug in the power adaptor the green indicator light comes on but when I press the power button it wont turn on,the harddrive doesnt spin the fan doesnt kick in NOTHING.If I remove the battery and just try to power the laptop with the adaptor the power light doesnt even come on,its the same if I just try to power it with the battery.I have replaced the CMOS battery but its the same deal.I have been reading up on this and it seems it could be any number of things. The laptop is the I series 1200 type 1161.There isnt any additional memory sticks installed so I dont think it could be that.I would really apreciate any help on this as it really is doing my head in.Cheers

Answer:Thinkpad I series 1200 power light on but wont turn on

It sounds like you went a little too solder-happy and over-soldered something causing a short or something like that. Not sure but I'd suggest you go back and check for that possibility....on the other hand a hw component might be in need of replacing?

Good Luck.

Question: Activity light

why flashing a lot

Answer:Activity light

It indicates that something is accessing your hard drive(s). This could be the operating system, applications you are running, your wi-fi connection doing some hand-shaking, or even malware.

It normally flickers fairly regularly if you are not doing very much, but if you are concerned, download a copy of Malwarebytes from here :

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

install it, follow the on screen instructions, run a quick scan and see what it says. Should it show up any problems you can't solve yourself, post back here in the 'Am I infected' section of the site.

Question: HD activity light

My new Gateway All-In-One with Win 7 and 64-Bit did not come with a Hard Drive activity light.
Is there any (free) program that would install something similar to a Hard Drive activity light that would let us know when hard drive is being used?

We saw one: Product: DKHardDrive-Light Version: 1.2.2 (.NET Framework application)
Platform: Windows NT/2000/XP

But it didn't state it would work with Win 7 64-bit.

Also, I do not have Microsoft® .Net Framework Redistributable 2.0, I only have:
Microsoft .Net Framework 4 Client Profile.

Can anyone help? When we are doing a large download, we don't see a HD light and therefore do not know if the download is actually downloading, etc.

Thanks

Never had any problems with the system, but shutdown the system for the last 4 weeks ( i have always kept the pc on), now when I restarted it, everything came up ok, but the hard drive activity light will not go off. Did a system restore from a floppy emergency boot for win me, no problems. But the hdd activity light will not go off. Can access all files, and even run some programs, but hdd activity light will not go off, when not accessing files or not running a program. How can I find what program could be running in the background accessing the hd on this operating system, or what else? Any help would be appreciated.

BluRay activity light never goes out! Everything is working great except for this. With Vista64 running I have learned that if it is not broken do not touch it or update. Last time I updated there were several new problems that required many hours to correct so I am a little hesitant to just start downloading drivers before I have heard from the "forum of knowledge". Has anyone had the same issue with the BluRay activity light and how did you resolve it?

What I miss with "7" is that the network icon does not show activity, even in the unscientific way that the old XP "two screens connected by a line" thing in the system tray used to do.

There may be a way to get "7" to do that... if so, I have completely missed it!

Not a deal breaker by any means, but there were times when something as basic and as visual as that would really help....

Answer:LAN activity (blinking light) ... how to?

This was discussed a while ago in a different thread, and one suggestion was to use Lan Lights which was originally developed for XP. In looking at the release notes, it has recently been updated to account for Windows 7 colors and to address large memory systems.

I have it running on my Windows 7 systems (32 bit) - I missed the blinking tray icon also.

A nice side benefit is that it shows a lot of other information as well, like totals, network activity, etc.

On my Compaq the hard drive light always flickers very lightly about once a second. I'm sure it is not virus activity. I checked my idle internet connections packets and it is normal. Does it at logon screen, not in safe mode. Maybe other computers do this to but I can't see it because the activity light is smaller. Does anyone else notice this on there machines as well?

Thanks

Folks,I've just completed a new build PC and all seems to be well...Except for the fact that the HDD activity LED doesn't work. By swapping over the "Power On" and "HDD activity" connection on teh mobo I've proved that the problem is simply a blown LED...Now this is a feature that I enjoy/want/need... (well let's say make use of!), so Iwant to get it working. It's a new case, from eBuyer, but I don't want to return the whole case, at that seems ridiculous on many levels, so I've raised an eNote with them asking if they could just send a replacement LED...In the event that they can't/wont do this I'll look to replace the LED myself by other means, however, I've no idea what spec LED I should be looking for. I've a mate who messes with electronics and says he'll let me have what I need, but what do I need? The currrent one has a diameter of about 3mm, and is red. Anyone known what spec I need for the HDD activity LED... eg voltage etc? Thanks in advance,Regards,Simsy

Answer:HDD activity light not working.

Simsy - there is an item here on replacing a "power light" LED which should help as to how to proceed - pay attention to No. 7 in list - click hereItem No 7 - Take the bulb and the wires to a local computer parts store. Ask the clerk to help you find an exact replacement. In most cases "close enough" is not good enough: LED bulbs that are too large will not fit in the front panel correctly. If the store does not have a good replacement, try searching for the part on line.Read more: How to Change the LED Light for the Power Button on Your PC | eHow.com click here

All of a sudden I can't connect with a cable to my router to get on the internet. The most activity it shows it Limitied/No Connectivity, or the red X that it isn't working. I have to connect wirelessly. I know it isn't the ports on the router because it did the same thing, with a new cable, in a different cable on the router. I also tried connecting directly to the modem, same issue.

Ideas?

I use ad-aware and spybot and spyware blaster and AVG. i've scanned sevearl times and get nothing.........Help??

Answer:PC/ACTIVITY Light always blinking now

Nothing is going on. I had Comcast for many years, and one day I noticed the same thing started happening. It was right after one of their network upgrades. When I connected a machine directly to the modem and monitored the traffic with WireShark, I found it was ARP requests for a whole bunch of addresses coming from their local gateway. I called support and they told me that was normal with the new network upgrade.

I recently fixed my computer to the help of you guys, it was infact my power supply. Before it burned out or rather failed on me, my HDD Activity Light would go solid red and the pc would freeze on me. It'd do this all the time to me, and it's doing it again. I really don't want to have to get another power supply.

Any reasons why the PC keeps freezing like this?

I'm using Vista by the way, it never did this prior to it.

I have been a ThinkPad user for many many years - R Series, T Series, W Series, and now the X250. So far - I am very pleased and it is serving its purpose well.  I have to say though, I miss the device status lights I had on my previous models.  I did not realize how much I relied on the hdd status light until it is MIA on the new X250.  Ouch. If there is any hesitation or delay during boot, saving, copying, browsing, installing, etc, I always glance at the hdd indicator to see if it is busy.  When travelling, I learned to rely on the wifi indicator just to glance down and see if the radio is turned on. Is there a work around or suggested alternative?  Am I missing something obvious? Thanks in advance!

Answer:X250 HDD Activity Light

There's a few drive activity indicators that sit in the system tray, but your system has to be fully booted for those to work.Don't know of an adequate replacement wifi indicator though.

I've searched around various places and I have found different problems with hard disk lights blinking and constant hard disk activity, but I have not found one that matches my exact problem. I have a fairly newish computer, with an Asrock x58 Xtreme 3 motherboard, Intel Core i7 930, and an OCZ Vertex LE SSD. When I first installed Windows, I disabled things like auto disk defragmentation, prefetch or superfetch (whichever the one is that most people disable when they have SSDs, I don't exactly remember), and so on. After this, my hard drive light would blink probably once per second.

I'm not sure what happened, I don't even know WHEN it happened, but my hard drive light started being on constantly. 100% of the time. The light doesn't even blink, it's just on solid. I went into Resource Monitor to try to track down which program was doing it. Sadly, the process that looked like it was the problem was "System". It is constantly reading and writing about 87,000,000 Bytes per second 100% of the time every day. I am worried this is going to ruin my SSD, and I would really like to figure out what is causing this problem. This screenshot shows my Resource Monitor. I ran a full computer scan with AVG and it didn't seem to find any problems. I was hoping someone could help me troubleshoot this. It didn't used to be like this. Thanks.

Answer:Constant 100% HDD Activity Light

Your description of "System" being the culprit sounds similar.

About a day ago I noticed that the Hard drive LED was staying on all the time. It does flicker a bit when accessing the drive but it never goes out. It comes on when I boot in the morning and stays on. I don't believe it is a windows problem because it does the same if I boot with a boot floppy or boot to BootIt Next Generation. I opened the computer case and checked all connections and inspected the cables and couldn't find anything loose or damaged. Could a power surge cause something like this to happen?

Every thing seems to work fine except sometimes upon first boot of the day, if I double-click on "My Computer" desktop icon, it takes several seconds for the drive icons to appear (sometimes the animated flashlight appears first).

I ran my virus scan, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and HijackThis but nothing new has shown up.

Do you think my hard drive has been damaged? Is there a way to analyze hard disk problems such as this?

Answer:Activity light stays on

I have a relatively new W530 with the factory-installed 16GB HDD cache drive and ExpressCache software (working properly according to the Lenovo-recommended test). I want to know if the disk-activity light indicates HD activity only or also SDD cache activity. My observation is that during long periods the disk-activity light is on continuously. The first time this happened, warrantee support told me that the HD was failing and sent me a new one. (They didn't seem to know anything about internal HD health tables that I thought existed and could be polled with special software.) Anyhow, this seemed to solve the problem for a few months, but it's recurring lately. Looking again at the Task Manager/Performance Tab/Resource Monitor/Disk Tab, I can see that the biggest user disk is the ExpressCache service (as it was the first time). I stopped this service and set it to manual, and the constant activity stopped shortly thereafter. It has not recurred in the past hour or so. Although the light's (mostly) off now, I still don't really know what this means; the initial question remains... Any light you can shed on the function of the disk-activity light (no pun intended) would be appreciated! -- JCW2

Answer:Disk-Activity Light and SDD Cache

I'm going to guess yes on the indicator part; I do know that it seems to light up for both main bay and UltraBay activity on my W520.If you want to check the health of your HDD, grab HD Tune and look at the Health tab. Nothing should be highlighted on a healthy drive. If the HDD light comes on a lot during idle, then chances are ExpressCache is trying to update the cache on the SSD to be more relevant to your workload.

My cable modem, Motorola Surfboard SB5101, PC Activity light has been flashing at a constant rate for a day and a half now. The only reason for why I noticed this would be because it usually only flashes when my computer opens a browser or makes a download.

I also have a wireless router that has a WLAN and an Internet light that are flashing at a constant rate as well.

My computer is hooked from the router and the router is wired to the modem and then the modem to the cable outlet in the wall. I'm guessing it is my computer that is causing this dilemma. I also noticed that the internet connection icon in the task bar is always lit up. Any ideas would be helpful.

Answer:PC Activity Light Constantly Flashing

It is normal on Cable Internet.

Unlike DSL, when using Cable Internet you do not have your own line, you share a node with all your neighbors, the flashing is a result of the combined activities.

Since you have a Router you should not worry about this activity.

This is not a question but a suggestion for those of you that no longer have a disk activity light on their system.I missed it so I did some searching and found a little free program called DiskLed.It takes up no cpu resources and only 3mb of memory. You can get it here...https://www.sepago.de/files/drupal/DiskLED.zip

Answer:Disk Activity Light SOLVED

That was a terrific tip.  Thanks.  Only thing I can add is, the write-up re: this utility, on the Sepago site (German corp.) is, here (as of August 2016): https://www.sepago.de/node/2455   The post is from January 2014.

Hi,

I notice that my internet activity status (I'm on dial-up) shows stuff being sent/received, even when I'm not doing anything. Anywhere between 300 and 1000 bytes (approx.). It does it if I have OE open but not doing anything, and the same with Firefox. It also does it when I don't have any programs open. However, I don't *think* it does it all the time, because there have been times when I'm connected but don't open any programs and just wait to see if it lights up, and it doesn't.

Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Answer:Why Does The Little Icon For Internet Activity Light Up When I'm Not Doing Anything?

The reason it lights up, even if there is no activity internet related, is the fact that information needs to be sent to your ISP (Internet Service Provider). This allows your computer to stay online. Nothing to be worried about.

I have a T61p and was having the worst time with my wireless networking.  I updated the wireless driver and the AC to the newest versions it the wireless seems to be stable again.  Woo Hoo.. However, the wireless activity light just below the display next to the bluetooth light, num lock, etc doesn't work anymore.  It won't turn on and off when I turn the wireless radio on and off and I can't see netework activity via that light anymore.  It's a minor annoyance but I sure would like it to work again.  Anyone know what I can do? Thanks in advanceShawnMessage Edited by shawnod on 10-25-2008 06:51 PM

Hi Guys,

I'm struggling a bit with this one. I've done lots of googling over the past few months and not found a solution.

I put together a long overdue upgrade a couple of months ago.

Used old:

I'm having a few problems with the PC:
I've had about 20 BSODs in the last 3 months. These mostly seem to occur when doing light activity. I don't think I've had one occur with heavy load (gaming etc.)

I've also had problems with not resuming from sleep - power comes on but monitor does not wake. Happens very intermittently.

I have a new (two-week-old) XP/Pro machine with a hard drive activity light that seems to blink (indicating disk activity) at random intervals about every half second. And this occurs even if I've been away from the machine for a couple of hours.

1) I've check both my program/system drive array (RAID-1) and data array (also RAID-1) and both do not have "Allow Indexing Service to index..." checked.

2) The top CPU users are
- System Idle Process ... usually 99%
- nScIp.exe
- nSvcAppFlt.exe
- upsd.exe ... I suspect this is polling my UPS
- Task manager
- explorer.exe

3) The System Overview Properties indicate there are some logs:
\Memory\Pages/sec
\PhysicalDisk(_Total)\Avg. Disk Queue Lenght
\Processor(_Total)\% Processor Time

Apparently these are updated every 15 seconds
... but I suspect these operations use cache and should not be responsible for the I/O

4) There are no shares with other systems

5) I did some searches on nScIp.exe. I am not, so far as I know, running an nVidia firewall. I am running Norton Internet Security 2008.

Any ideas?

Answer:Disk Activity Light ALWAYS blinking

You can use a disk monitoring tool to determine which applications are causing the I/O and stop them, to see one that I use see: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896646.aspx

I have a Motorola SB5101 modem and the amber light (PC Activity) always used to blink rapidly whether the computer was on or off. A few days ago, I noticed that it is on steadily now, but once in while, blinks slowly for a few seconds. I called my cable company and they said, in as many words, as long as I can connect to the Internet, what's the problem? I unplugged the modem and let it reboot, but it's still the same. I was just curious as to why the change in modem behavior or is it something I should be concerned about. BTW - my OS is Windows 7 64 bit.

Answer:PC Activity light on modem on steady

Unless you get a higher tier (3) on support, they just read from a script and get you off the phone. I did find this:

Solid Amber
Problem: None. A single device is connected to either the Ethernet or USB port and no data is being sent to or from the modem.

Flashing
Problem: None. LAN activity; transmitting or receiving data N/A

Off
Problem: No devices connected.

According to this, this is not a problem.

Yes it is, it's telling you that there is a "live" drive in the bay. If you disable it using safely remove hardware, the light will go out. When you remove the drive and slot it back in again, the light will go on. edit: TypoMessage Edited by andyP on 10-01-2008 09:07 PM

So I just got a used T400 to play around with while I'm overseas. It is the model with the P9400 and ATI HD3470. It was an old corporate laptop that was refurbished and sold over ebay. So far it has been great. I know not to expect great performance when gaming but I'm wondering if anyone has any tips and tricks to really get the most out of it.  Do you think it would be worth it to open it up and blow it out? Also, the battery is a 9-cell but I'm only getting about 3 hours out of it. I know it is from sitting at a desk for years just plugged in all the time. Is there anything I can do to improve it? Or should I just get a new one? Thanks so much!

Hey, I apologize for any newbie mistakes I may be making here. I am pretty sure that my motherboard is toast, but to verify I thought I'd pick some brains. This all started about a month ago (also went with a non OEM battery at this point.) At first it started as my HDD light would not come on, or signal the HDD to boot correctly. Either way the screen was completely blank and remained that way until I found that I was able to just turn off completely and restart just fine. After about a week of this, I ended up just leaving the power settings to always on which worked great, but being a technician I couldn't leave it alone. It worked great for a few days, then back to the same issue. Now I get no response at all. I can feel the hard drive working and here it beep, but no light on the unit. I have tried every reset under the sun including pulling the CR2032 battery, ram, HDD... All components test just fine in other machines. This is my prized comptuter, and I hate to give it up. Please let me know if you have any possible solutions. Hello, I have a Lenovo T400 Type 2764. I started having problems with it a few weeks ago, when it began randomly shutting off for seemingly no reason once every few days. When I would try to turn it back on by pushing the power button, nothing would happen (no lights). If I removed the battery for a few seconds and then reinserted it and tried again, it would reboot as if nothing had happened. A few days ago this same thing happened, but now even removing and reinserting the battery isn't helping--it won't turn on and no lights come on. I tried taking out the battery and plugging it into the outlet to see if it would run on AC power only, and the same thing occurred--no lights, no reboot. Any ideas as to what's going on and what I should do? I've used this computer almost daily for over four years and haven't had any of these problems until recently. Thanks!

Answer:T400 won't turn on or light up

Hi Sheepishsheep,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with No Power on ThinkPad T400.

This symptom could occur on some earlier T400 systems with down-level BIOS if the battery were completely discharged.  There are several methods to reset the system, and then once reset, the latest BIOS should be installed.

To reset:

1) Remove battery and AC adapter and then press and hold the power button for several times for about 10 sec each time.

2) Re-attach AC adapter and restart.  This should resolve in most cases

If the system has not reset, you may need to remove the CMOS battery and let the system sit for 30 mins to an hour and repeat steps above, then reconnect CMOS battery.  Additional information on the following steps to remove the palm rest can be found in the hardware maintenance manuals on the Lenovo support site http://support.lenovo.com.
How to remove CMOS battery http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-71484

1) Remove battery and AC adapter

2) Remove the 5 screws on the bottom of the system that have the icons for keyboard next to them.

3) Carefully lift off the palm rest and place it toward the front of the machine so you have access to the memory sockets.  If needed, carefully disconnect the ribbon cable connector that goes the system board - it lifts straight up.

I am planning to replace the supplied SATA disk drive in my XPS 8900 with an M2 SSD model.  The Addonics card I am installing for the SSD has a connection (and cable) for an external hard disk drive activity light (which allows me to see when the disk drive is active).  Can you please tell me if there is a connector on the XPS 8900 system board that I can use for this purpose?

Is there a way to hook up the indicator light to both the motherboard and a PCI SATA controller card so that activity on either hard drive controller shows on the LED light? I would assume that you need something to stop the power from one feeding back to the other board.

Hi :D

Throughout the lifespan of my computer, whenever I leave the computer for about 10-15 minutes, the activity light on my laptop will come on, almost as if a program is trying to "scan" for something. I want to say it's related to some HP software (or bloat), but I have no idea what is causing it or where to look for it, or even if it can be uninstalled. As soon as I move my mouse, the activity light stops flashing.

Answer:System Idle makes activity light come on

Mine does too, every Windows OS back to ME has for me. Just because you're not using the computer doesn't mean there aren't systems applications running in the background. Are you having a specific problem you need addressed or just curious about the activity indicator?

My computer is stuck or frozen. The activity light stays on. I have removed all fans and cleaned them, remove battery and replaced after 30 minutes, used a different battery, unplugged all cables. After trying each one, I plugged the computer in again and still activity light stays on. The moniter is black. When I turn it off and on it shows "no signal" on the screen. I also replaced the ram with two 2Gs. What do I do to stop whatever activity is going on?

Hi OliviaITlover Depending on the laptop/computer brand and model you have, you won't have the same lights as others. Some offers light for the A/C, network (WiFi), network (Ethernet), disk usage, etc. while others only offers light for the A/C. Personally, I've never seen a light for the CPU usage. If you want to know your CPU usage (and if it's struggling), right-click on the taskbar and select Open Task Manager. From there, you'll see your CPU usage and if it's struggling or not.

To save weight or whatever the Lenovo engineers decided to ommit a harddisk (SSD) activity light. As background applications might do a lot of mass storage work it would be helpful to find out if a slow laptop is due to exactly that.  There is a solution! I have Compaq Presario S5000CL running win XP. The problem that I have is that my activity light continually flickers as it might be processing something. I know for a fact that I'm not doing anything with my computer and the light continues to flicker. The reason I know that I'm not processing anything is that I kill everything from the taskmanager. I have done a virus removal but just for your info i'm including my HJT log.

Answer:Solved: Activity light continually stays on

Why don't you have SP2? Start by installing that.
Turn on your automatic updates too.

You are not beating the system or showing MS who's the boss by shutting of security features. You need to update that machine. That's probably what got you in the situation you're in now. Luckily you still have an operating system to work with.

Then run these free utilities:

Ccleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/
Adaware: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
Spybot S&D: http://www.spybot.info/

Hopefully these will fix the problem.

It's probably indexing that's causing the thrashing (it was a very common complaint). Try disabling indexing:

My Dell Optiplex 380 is flashing its amber light on the power button but no other activity is being observed. CD-ROM drive will not open, nothing is showing up on the monitor and there is very little internal fan sound. I have unplugged the system overnight and plan on checking to see if it just needed a "reset". We have had trouble with this before and now I believe its a crash. Do we need a new hard drive? What can I do to trouble shoot this problem??

Answer:Amber light flashing and no other activity/Optiplex 380

Here is something from the manual for blinking amber light.
Initial state of light at power up.
Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active.
If the Hard Drive light is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced.
If the Hard Drive light on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed. Look at the diagnostic lights for further information.

Answer:Solved: SSD Disk Activity Light Solid

HOw long was the light on solid? Personally I would download MSE from Microsoft, uninstall AVG and install MSE. Perhaps the light was on because AVG was scanning every file on the drive. In any case I find AVG to take a lot of resources. With MSE you can set the amount of resources it uses when doing a scan.

I have an Actiontec 1424 router (from Verizon) for my wireless cxn. I have noticed that the wireless activity light blinks a lot during the night when I am not on the pc or the net. I have wpa security on it and firewalls and all the rest but just wonder what this blinking light is all about. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

I have  T400 running XP Pro 32 bit that started acting up a couple days ago.  This machine is my daily use machine and spends a fair amount of time running on the battery and not plugged in.  A couple days ago after a day of having it in the docking station in my office I came home took it out of the case powered it up on battery power and it immediately beeped and put itself into hibernate mode.  The Lenovo power manager icon said the battery was at 98% and in good condition while the windows power meter was saying my battery was critically low.  I plugged it in and changed the windows setting so they couldn't shut down the machine. I then noticed that sometimes the Lenovo power manager icon would turn white with a red line though it saying there was an error. I downloaded the latest driver and there is no change. I've tested by running on batteries and the battery discharges as I would expect.  When I plug it back in sometimes it will charge and sometimes it wont.  If I turn it off and then plug it in the indicator will normally turn solid green and it charges. I don't have an additional battery available to test with so I'm hoping someone has ran into this before. Thanks in advance.

Answer:T400 battery light blinking

Welcome to the forum.

Charging after plug in powersupply depends on the load capacity of the battery. If 98% or higher, the battery will not be charged if computer is running.

Please do a calibration of your battery (Power Manager - battery-tab, "Battery maintenance" - button.

Hi, Every once in a while when I turn on my laptop, it powers on but the monitor doesn't seem to boot up. The power light indicator is on and everything else sounds like it's running, but the monitor doesn't turn on and no beeps occur.  I tried running diagnostics and nothing wrong was found. Lenovo customer support couldn't help me.

I had the same issue you are experiencing for a while. I recently installed the newest Bios version released by Lenovo and this update seems to have resolved the problem. In my case, the issue used to happen when restarting the computer from hibernation. At this point I am still testing my computer. In addition to Windows Vista I also have Windows 7 installed on another drive partition. When restarting the computer from hibernation with Windows 7 the issue keeps happening. It does not happens all of the time but it does frequently enough.  To summarize, the latest Bios version seems to have resolved the black screen issue when restarting my computer from hibernation while using Windows Vista Home Premium. However, the same issue keeps happening with Windows 7. Good Luck, OIBM

Hi There, I have some problem with my T400. It will not boot at all. When I plug in AC adaptor, there is no light at all. presing the start button does not have any affect. I have removed the battery and connected only on AC Adaptor, it shows no light. I have tried, pressing start button 10 mins, then holding start button for 30 secs, then connect to AC adaptor (Battery removed) and press Start. It has shown the AC power light but it did not boot. I attached the battery and after that no light at all and even if I take the battery off, it still does not show any light at all while connected to AC adaptor. AC adaptor is absolutely fine as it works on another Lemovo machine. I have also tried pulling CMOS out and leaving it disconnected overnight but still no light come up when I replug AC adaptor. What could be the problem and how can I resolve this. Thanks in advance.

Hi, My laptop (t400 2764 on Win 7 x64) is just under 2 years old and the battery (6 cell) was surviving adequately (still getting a good 2.5 hours of life out of it) before this happened. One day the orange light started blinking and windows told me the battery had failed due to normal use.  When I look at other posts for this same message they claim huge numbers of charge cycles before their failed but mine are minimal don't remember the number off hand. I've upgraded to the newest power manager and attempted to reset the battery but when I do that the computer just shuts off (likely cause it tries to run off the battery).  Similarly if I unplug it it just dies obviously since the battery isn't communicating.  That said the battery still has 96% charge and is bright green and in the lenovo power manager has the condition as good. All these conflicting signs make me very wary of just buying a new battery since they cost a small fortune (150 plus tax and shipping is about a quarter or what I paid for the machine!) for a lenovo brand one. Is there a way of resetting the battery other than through the power manager?  What are the chances it's a motherboard issue as opposed to the battery?  It just seems really odd that it would go from working fine to dead in a split second.  I'd try the battery in another t400 or another t400 in my laptop but don't know anyone else who has one. Any help would be much appreciated. ... Answer:T400 battery light blinking

2 years on a battery might seem like not a long time, but at our organization, it's normal. Especially on the T61w/T400 6 cell batteries - they seem to fail with no explanation. Unless somebody else has a suggestion, in my finding, you will need to replace your battery, despite what you may or may not be seeing in the Power Manager.

Hi,

I upgraded my HP Pavilion a1540n Desktop to Windows 7 a week ago. Ever since, my hard drive light constantly blinks. After looking at the disk activity in the Windows Resource Monitor and doing some research I am leaning towards the page file as the problem. I am not sure if that is in fact the problem as there seems to be quite a few processes creating high disk activity, including Firefox profile cache, $Logfile, and MpWppTracing.bin. I only have 1GB of RAM. Would I be better served to add RAM before doing anything else like using Cacheman?

Answer:Why does my Hard Drive Activity Light Constantly Blink

Do you actually have constant hard drive activity, or is the light just blinking?

I have had my laptop since January 2015. It has worked well, and I had no issues until yesterday. I was working on my computer when it suddenly shutdown. The whole computer shut off; there was no warning of a powerdown from the system nor did the computer enter shutdown mode before ceasing to work.I attempted to turn the computer back on but it would not boot or power up. The Power light and battery light are lit up, but nothing else happens with the computer. The fan does not start, the hard drive does not run, the screen remains black, and the computer makes no sounds.I tried several solutions such as clearing the residual charge by pulling out the battery, holding the power button for 1 minute, resting 1 minute, and then plugging in the ac adapter (battery still out), and hit the power button. Still nothing from the computer; no sounds or internal mechanics going into action. Only the power light lights up.I opened the back of the computer to check the RAM, hard drive, fan, and wires. They all appear to be intact. I have tried to restart the computer several times today, and have even tried restarting after several hours of the computer being unplugged, all to no avail. At this point, I am at a loss as to what the issue could be. I hope that it is not an issue with the motherboard since the computer is brand new. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello

I have noticed a strange behavior in my computer since the last few days

When i start the computer the 1st time in the morning, the HDD activity light keeps running continuously and does not even blink for a second non stop

However, if shutdown and restart, the HDD activity stops after a couple of minutes as it should be !

Can i just  ignore  the HDD activity light and go on with my normal work ?

I am worried that in case the computer is going in some loop and accessing the HDD endlessly, it will reduce the life of the HDD and may cause early failure of the same .

Am I paranoid for nothing ?
Any recommendations on the same ?

My configuration is as follows:

AMD 1090T
Crosshair IV Formula
2X4 GB Corsair RAM 1600 Mhz
Corsair HX 620 SMPS
WD500 Blue HDD
250GB Seagate HDD
Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit updated everyday
Microsoft security essential
MBAM paid version

I searched sevenforums.com for similar cases, but all results involved resuming from sleep or standby. In my case, the power options are set to "never sleep" and "turn off the display" after 2 hours (I changed it to never turn off until this is resolved). When it first started it was a few seconds. Over a couple of weeks, it's grown to 7 minutes or more. All works well after it finally lights the display.

I believe you can see my system info, Win7 32, single user home desktop of the early Win7 era. No upgrades or fiddling has been done, I gradually gave that up after W7 came along. Possibly not listed is a Logitech USB wireless mouse that has worked fine for a year or so. Sometimes its driver is using a lot of resources during the display-off condition, but stops immediately upon waking up. This can be seen in the CPU history in Process Explorer, which I frequently check before starting to work with the computer. The only recent new equipment is a new cable modem.

I did notice there were two sessions of CMD.exe open, and I'm not sure I've noticed that before. I usually back an image every Sunday night, but I think I'll postpone this week's until I work this out.

Thanks for any ideas.
Rusty

Answer:Display getting slower to light after mouse or keyboard activity

Update:
After 8 hours with the display set to not turn off, nothing has gone glitchy with my computer. It's ready to go as soon as I start any work. I don't know if that's any sort of clue, but I figured I should add that observation.

I checked the task scheduling in Norton Security and see nothing that might be different when the display sleeps. In fact I can think of nothing that should "care" whether the screen is black or not... except the video circuitry. I hope my hardware isn't failing, I don't want a new computer. This has been the most trouble free system I have ever had, and that dates back to my 8088 days.

I've decided to go ahead and run the weekly (Acronis)image backup tonight. The reason I was hesitating earlier is that my external drive has only room for one at a time. I'm aware that if the computer ever goes blooey during the backup, I'm up the crick. One of these days I'll get a big drive.

I've been using computers since Win 3.0, but have recently built my own computer for the first time.

Generally, everything works great... right up until the point it doesn't.

Sometimes my PC will randomly just "lock up". The screen freezes, the keyboard is completely unresponsive (including ctrl-alt-del), the mouse cursor is the spinning circle. The only way out is to hit the RESET button.

It seems fairly random, and has happened while I was using iTunes, Outlook, or other programs.

The one constant is that every time it happens, I can see that the HDD activity light is *solid*. It's not flickering / blinking like with normal HDD access, just solid. I don't know whether there is something truly being accessed, or whether the solid light is just a red herring.

Also, I don't know if the system is actually frozen, or whether there's something hogging the system to the extent it's so slow that it appears frozen. It's a pretty beefy system, so whatever it is would have to be really doing a number. I've only ever waited like 2 minutes before giving up.

Given that every time it happens the HDD light goes solid, I have to suspect it's something with the hard drive subsystem, but I don't know how to begin troubleshooting whether it's a mobo SATA port issue, an Intel RST driver issue, a hard drive issue, a cable issue, or maybe it's not the hard drive at all!

Here's some details (see more in my Systems Spec)Recently purchased DZ68BC mobo

Answer:Win7 Randomly Locks Up - HDD Activity Light Solid

When everything stops is it like BANG all at once? Or is it more like first one app "goes white" then maybe another and another then the cursor stops moving in the span of maybe a few seconds?

If it's the slower one by one scenario then chances are greater than yes it's a HD issue somewhat specifically. As each app gets starved for HD access they white out waiting for it, finally the OS itself is starved for HD access and blocks. If it's an instantaneous hard lock, then the HD access may be pushing something over the top (like memory stability) but may not be the actual cause of the lockup...

Hi, I just noticed earlier today that my hdd light is staying on. I mean on like the power light is on, not flickering when the hard drive is being used. Is this the light going bad, or is the motherboard going bad? Please don't tell me that the mobo is goind bad.

I had that happen with a brand new build a couple of years ago. Changing cases made no difference. The retailer checked the motherboard and replaced it.

Hi all.

My laptop is running Windows XP Home Edition Veresion 2002 SP2.
I have Kaspersky Anti Virus which seems to be working correctly. The problem I get is that after about 1 hour of using the laptop the system completely slows down and it can take around 1 minute to switch between tabs in Internet Explorer.

Also the disk activity light comes on constantly.

I have attached my Panda scan results to this post, My HJT Log file is bellow.

I have a Toshiba laptop, running Windows XP Home, with 1 GB ram, and about all I use it for is email while traveleing and PowerPoint presentations when I teach.

I have a Linksys wifi card which I don't use at home since I have no wifi network at home. But if I want to use the web at home, I wire up my Ethernet cord that comes from my Comcast cable modem through my Linksys Ethernet router.

At the moment, I have booted it up, but I have not put in the wifi card and I have not connected the modem. So the only wires into the rig are for 120 vac power and the mouse!

I've completed the normal startup and I'm looking at the customary Windows desktop screen. All icons are lit and steady. Everything on the quick launch bar and the task bar is normal. The cursor is the customary arrow and it's steady.

I've been in this configuration for nearly 30 minutes now, and the hard drive activity light on the front of the rig has not stopped blinking randomly the whole time!

What the **** is it doing?!

Answer:Hard drive activity light never stops blinking!

Have you checked in Task Manager under processes to see what might be running that may be causing this?

My LED screen light died so I purchased another LED screen with the exact same model as the original but the light of the new screen is also dead. I hope that the new screen isn't defective and if so, then something else is causing the dead light. From what i gathered, the LED screen has no inverter, so i'm not able to come up with any other explanation for the screen having no light. Anyone know anything about the LED sub card, if it has anything to do with the backlight? Don't want to spend money on LED sub card if it's not going to solve my problem.

Hi All,

I have had this Toshiba Equium L350D since September 2008, and it has not been in use that often, it was working fine two days ago, but yesterday I switched it on, with power lead attached, and the "plug" light came on and was solid, and so did the power and the battery indicators, I could hear the fan working and the light on the cd/dvd was on solid. But that was it, no activity from the hard drive at all.

I could not switch it off without disconnecting the power lead and removing the battery as the power button did not seem to perform a shut-off when pressed for 10 seconds.

Any advice, apart from taking it to a repair centre as I do not really want to spend too much money on it.

Answer:Equium L350 powers up (power light on solid) but no activity from HDD

Hi dude

I think you have no other choice as to get in contact with an notebook technician.
The point is that this issue sounds as an serious hardware problem? I think about motherboard or CPU issue because it was not possible to shut down the unit pressing the power button for 10 sec?

The notebook has been purchased in September 2008?
Well? if you have registered the notebook on the Toshiba European driver page then the warranty should be valid for 24month?. And this means that the warranty should be still valid?
So you should not need to pay for anything?

This is regarding my R400 (brand new)... No one seems to have the cure for this issue that  I've asked.  It doesn't matter what I'm doing, this periodically happens and is dampening my productivity.   The mouse will stop when the hard drive activity light is on.  Then, as soon as it stops, I can gain control of the mouse again.  I'm not sure why this happens.   I know the problem is not the mouse itself as I have  tried two different USB mice, using the trackpad, and using the eraser pointing device in the center of the keyboard.  They all occur regardless.   I believe that there is some kind of background program that is running that is actively using so much resources that my mouse will stop.   Are there any suggestions that I can do to fix this problem?  I have an R51 that does not have this issue.  Of course, I took off all the Access IBM software and the software that is added. I have also tried to restore the computer to an earlier date with no avail.  I have also wiped it  clean and reinstalled the OS and how it was from the factory.  Still no success. Please help!!!!Message Edited by in4mation on 02-04-2009 09:53 PM

Hello,
I have a HP G60-443CL Notebook, 64 Bit Vista, lately is been slowed down considerably and the fan is running constantly and the hard drive light is almost constant. When I open an application such as browser, after a bit the hard drive begins to run constantly and slows the computer down to a crawl. The fan is always running loud. I do not notice anything under Task manger that appears to be hogging memory, but I may not know quite how to look more extensively. It has become very annoying and quite a hindrance to my work environment. If I try to run more than one application, everything on the computer just slows down tremendously. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

For as long as I've had this machine (a little over a year) the HDD light is constantly going wild. (Erratic blinking, but ALWAYS blinking)

After purchasing it, I had to send it in for a warranty claim on a bad mother board.

Got it back, works fine. Used it for a few months, light still blinking.

I've always viewed it as bothersome, but nothing serious.

But now I can HEAR the hard drive making little noises. And I'm worried it's going to fail.

Disk check shows everything is OK. Ran Malwarebytes, Spypot S&D, and Avast! Virus Scan, no issues. I've defragged, tried disabling indexing and the DVD drive. Still blinking.

I've looked at Resource Monitor to see what is using the hard drive, and the list updates so often I can't even see what's doing what. It appears to be mostly activity from Firefox and system processes.

I'm all out of ideas. I'm thinking of upgrading to an SSD with a fresh Windows 8 install, but I don't want to do that and have the light STILL blink.

Could it be a still faulty motherboard? Does anyone have any ideas?

Having used Desktop computers for many years, I was surprised to see that my new Dell Desktop did not include a Hard Drive Activity light. Hard Drive activity is a good indicator when booting, trouble shooting and communicating with on-line Support Assistants. Is there a way to add this light?  Does the motherboard have an output terminal? I know that Dell is sheepish about their users messing with the hardware but I'm asking the question anyway. In my opinion I'd like to know the back story behind the decision to drop the hard drive activity light. Thank You.

Answer:Dell XPS 8910 - Hard Drive Activity Light - Missing

Hello!  there isn't a way to add the light.  As for any back story it was probably a design choice.  There are a lot of computers that omit the light now days.

Hi, a few days ago i downloaded a file from limewire, and when i opened it
the real time protection from my antivirus program said it had found a w32.alcra.f virus in it.

I deleted the downloaded file, but ever since then, the computer seems to have gotten slower. The hard disk activity light (orange) keeps flashing even when i don't have any programs or downloads going on. The lights on my adsl modem also keep flashing.

The antivirus program that found the w32.alcra.f was the Symantec Corporate Edition. I ran a few scans afterwards but it didn't find anything. I then ran AdAware and found a fare bit of spyware. The thing is though, I ran it again about five minutes later and it found more again. THe spyware keeps regenerating itself!

I then downloaded AVG and ran a scan. It immediately found two backdoor.hupigon3.AHGM viruses. There doesn't seem to be much information about that virus, and it only seems to be detected by AVG and nothing else.

Sorry about the long post, but I'm quite worried since this computer has been absolutely fine until now.

IIRC the blinking moon means it is going into hibernation.  On steady = sleeping, blinking = going through the hibernation process.  It should go out once it's fully hibernated.

The "resuming" message means it is waking from hibernation, not sleep.

Check your power options.  There should be a hibernation timer and enable/disable in the advanced options somewhere.
