t400 does not access the bios only power led lights, black screen.

Question: t400 does not access the bios only power led lights, black screen.

After powering back on, the screen was lifeless -black like if the computer was off (no logo or anything -completely dead). Nothing was visible on the screen -There was no response from the hdd light either.I tried to press F1 to access Bios -I tried to press the blue Thinkvantage butten -no response. Then I tried to turn it off and on with the startup disk for Vista Business -the CD/DVD drive sounded like it was trying to access the disc but after a while it gave up (the screen was lifeless all this time too)Itried leaving the computer off for about half an hour, but there is no change. I don't understand this -even if the hdd was unreadable I should at least be able to access Bios. Seems like the computer is totally dead. The only icons with light is the icon for the battery and the icon for power( I think that's what it is).I've already done this happened Zado all checks, trying to boot without ram, does not beep, no access to the bios.comment that when this happened I was using the ati card.Any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: t400 does not access the bios only power led lights, black screen.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:My lenovo g510 shows black screen every time I power it on but the power lights are on .

Hi Anish1,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with black screen in your Lenovo G510 laptop.

As you have mentioned that black screen when turned on, can you hear the windows login sound?
Remove the battery and connect only adapter and check for the issue also connect only battery and check for the issue.

Connect an external monitor and check if the display appears in the external monitor then its a issue with the LCD, if there is no display in the external monitor then it might be issue with the motherboard, hence suggest you to visit the nearest authorised service centre.

Click here for the service centre and select your region.

Best regards,

I went to use my laptop and it wouldn't turn on, the only thing that was running was the fan and it was much louder than usual. When I returned to the laptop a few hours later, the fan was finally off and the computer was unresponsive, no lights or sounds at all. I tried the hard reset and that didn't work. I tried numerous outlets and still no power. What else can I possibly do?

Answer:Black screen, no lights, no power

Would love feedback here.  Power lights are on, screen is completely black.I've read other reports of this in the 900 and other Yoga models but I've never seen the solution Lenovo support offered. They said it was hardware issue, a no power-on-start issue. This is a newish computer.  What do you think the issue could be?Pressing power button for 1 minute has no effect.Using One-key recovery, no effectF9, increasing brightness, has no effect. Black dead screen, I've tried all my tricks. Nothing has worked.

I can't find the answer to this anywhere and I am not sure this is the right forum..but..I have a Toshiba notebook that has been giving me problems and worsening.

I push the power button and it lights and nothing happens...black screen. I push it again to turn it off, then I am constantly pushing the button on and off. After about ten minutes it will go right into the normal boot mode. Not sure why it is taking longer to get into this normal boot mode I have windows 7 and I have a Toshiba Satelite T 115-S1100. Hey all. Got windows 7 on my g555, with truecrypt on the drive, if it matters.  Last night, closed down the cover of my laptop before i fell asleep, like always, today it doesn't respond at all when I opened it back up.  Forced it to shut down, and haven't seen anything but a black screen since. The power light comes on, the fan comes on, and that's about it.  Can't get to the bios, can't do ANYTHING.  Tried unplugging it for a while, pressing power 10 times, holding power down for a minute, ran the battery entirely dry THEN discharged the caps, ...I've read many solutions where its the built up static charge that's the problem, but not here.  I've tried all versions of the solution I could find, all very similar, but none worked.  I took out my RAM and put it back in, and same for the hard drive.  No dice. The only lights I get at all are the power light, and the battery charging light next to it.  Can't get the CAPS LOCK, num lock, any of that to do anything.  Cannot boot by CD/DVD as I cannot change the bios, and can't get any response from any keys or key combos that I can think of (including the one-touch restore). Any advice?  What can I try here to get this sucker going again?

Hi all, I have a T400 from early '09. It's been a fantastic laptop, though I now only use it for when I travel. Over the last year it's been running very hot, especially when playing games. I've been using a portable fan to cool it down, didn't think about getting it checked out because I didn't use it very often. Today it froze up and I force shut it down by holding the power key. When it rebooted it ran a disk check (I had a sleep and didn't see the results) and when it loaded windows it was running extremely slowly. After a bit of experimenting I worked out the wifi and switchable graphics drivers weren't working. I was able to get it to a usable state by disabling the discrete graphics in the bios and booting into safe mode. I was going to reinstll the drivers. While they were downloading I tried to re-enable the discrete graphics (in the bios) and booted. However before I got to the boot manager screen, I got a BSOD (c000021a). I turned the laptop off, but it would not start again. None of the lights on the laptop are working, even though it is plugged in. The only things I changed in the bios were the switchable graphics (which I changed back to the default setting) and the "beep" on hibernation. I have no idea if the battery has any charge, it should be at 100% as it was plugged in the entire time. I noticed the laptop was running very hot while I was working with it. Our tech guy seems to think the motherboard may have overheated and "mel... Read more

Try the 10-30 routine.Remove battery and disconnect from AC. Now press the ON button 11 times and on the 11th press hold it in the ON position for 30 seconds. Attach AC and see if it starts. This issue has plagued old Thinkpads forever. I have not found the true cause other than my speculation of age related.

Hi, this is my first post on this site. My friend suggested it for me, so here's the deal:
I'm having quite a few difficulties with my custom PC running Win8. I think most of them relate to just having Win8 beta instead of Win7. Now I have Win7 and I'd very much like to install it, but I need to access my BIOS in order to do so. But here comes the problem that I cannot access my BIOS for some unexplicable reason - at least that's what I think.
I have tried everything you can do when the computer starts - pressing all the F-keys, pressing delete. Delete will make the computer not even go to Windows, but instead just remain a black screen. I'm thinking it's going into the BIOS but for some reason my monitor doesn't pick it up.
Now, I know that all my hardware works perfectly, my monitor can display everything perfectly when I'm inside my OS, and besides a few flaws in the Win8 beta - there's nothing out of the ordinary. Plus I can run heavy games like Sleeping Dogs and Battlefield 3 on highest settings, no problem. I've tried booting with my Win7 install cd in, but it will still give me a black screen.
I've also made sure all drivers for my motherboard are up to date and installed.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi - I'm wondering if anyone knows what the issue with my T-400 would be if the LCD screen is very dim.  Details include: - When I boot up, there's a faint outline of what is going on, but barely noticeable since the whole screen is very, very dim- Video card is working okay, because I can operate the laptop when I plug in an external monitor- The icon lights for HDD, power, battery, etc. are still working Thanks so much for the help.

Answer:T400 LCD screen is very dim, but icon lights for HDD, etc. are working

There 3 several possibilities. The backlight could have burned out. There is a fuse on the motherboard. If you have a CCHL backlight, there is also an inverter that could have died.

I have an HP DV7 laptop running Windows 7 that recently crashed big time.

About a week ago it started shutting down randomly. I use compressed air to blow the dust out and use a cooling fan. So it wasn't shutting down from over heating.

I ran an anit-virus and malware programs which found a handful of infected files. This seemed to have fixed the issue as it quit shutting down randomly.

A few days later I was having program ?not responding? issues and powered down to reboot by holding down the power button. When is started back up I didn't get the normal menu with a ?safe mode? selection but rather one said I needed to run windows repair.

I did just that and it warned me it could take several minutes and that it would reboot itself. I went to do somethings and returned 3 hours later I came back to the monitors being a solid sea foam green, think windows 3.1 desktop. I tried my mouse, then touchpad and my laptop didn't respond. I once again shut it down by holding the power button down.

When I turned it back on you can here everything power up but that's it. Just a black screen without the option to access the bios or set up. I'm pretty sure the graphic card and monitors are fine as it does send a signal to my second monitor and takes it out of stand-by mode. Plus the were both green before shutting down.

There are no beeps happening but the light on the caps lock does flash on and off.

Hi, my M92Z type 3311 with 23 inch display runs directly into a black screen after power on.The last think I tried, was to upgrade my Windows 7 Prof. to the new Windows 10 by the upgrade offer from Microsoft. The last informations I have seen on the screen was the progress informations came up after reboot saying "You can lean back....". I did and went away from PC. After returning 30min later a black screen is showing. PC is running, fan is working. HDD led blinking. But the display totally off.Since then the defect is as follows: 1. Turn on by power button2. Display shortly (2-3 seconds) lights up as on normal start up3. Display stays black (tested for more than 30 minutes)     --> So, no BIOS is shown before, just black display4. PC is running with activated fan. HDD led is randomly and shorty blinking.5. Pushing button for display settings, brings up the menu to change display settings6. Pushing button for external input from display port, brings message box saying: No input signal available. Which is correct, cause no input is connected.7. Via USB connected keyboard is not reacting. Num-lock LED could not be actived for example. I tried following things, but all with no success. Result was always a black screen.1. Pull out HDD and try to start without it.2. Changed HDD from SSD to old original standard HDD.3. Changed RAM4. Try to boot with linux boot DVD, also without HDD connected!5. Try to reset BIOS status with appropriated jumper on m... Read more

HP Envy 700 PC SeriesProduct No: D6M07AV#ABAModel No: 700-010xt I had a problem with my CD/DVD driver, so I found that one solution to fix the problem was to unistall the IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers and reinstall it, I unistall it and then I shutdown the PC but when I start it  I'm getting now only a black screen. I checked the power in the monitor and the cables, I have the HDMI and the digital cable connected to the monitor and both ports have the same black screen, then I tried with another monitor and still the same, also I connected the HDMI cable to my TV and also I'm getting a black screen. I turn off the PC then disconnect the power cable and press the start button to reset the PC, i can see the light in the PC, then I connect back the power cable to the PC and start the PC again and still the same, then I restared the PC and press constantly "ESC" key to access the BIOS but I only see the black screen in the monitor and TV, also i tried to F10 to access the BIOS but i was not able. Could you let me know if I'm doing something wrong to access the BIOS and/or in my troubleshooting steps?

Hi,

Let me explain what has happened. I have an ASUS X550C laptop which has been working perfectly up to a couple of weeks ago. Now when the laptop is switched on, no POST or BIOS is available and Windows 8.1 will not boot. All attempts at booting from a USB or CD/DVD recovery image have failed because I cannot access the boot menu to change the boot order. I have tried lots of tricks but still no hope. The only hope I get is that when I take the HDD out, I can load the BIOS but when I plug the HDD again nothing happens.

I need urgent help as on the HDD I have my computer science project and without it (by the 3rd of August) I've failed my first year at university

Please throw at me all hints, tips, fixes (even if they're temporary) that you guys have!

Would it be possible to GHOST the HDD and replace the HDD (would that work?)

Many thanks
Adam

Answer:Laptop has black screen with no access to BIOS

Hi AdamE071,
As the data is important, I would suggest testing your HDD in a different PC and seeing if it is recognized in BIOS, device manager and disk management. If you can see the drive in BIOS but you cannot access the data on it you can give Linux Live CD/USB a chance – it is a safe way to recover your data as it will either see it and provide access to it or you won't be able to do so. In the later case, the most fool-proof way to recover the information would be to contact a data recovery company. Other than that you could try data recovery software, however, keep in mind that there are no guarantees for successful recovery and that such programs can actually damage the driver further.
As for the system itself I would recommend making sure that all the components and cables are firmly in place and that the motherboard is not short circuiting with the case of the laptop. Afterwards, see if there are any swollen captivators on the motherboard and reset your CMOS (motherboard) battery. If nothing helps the only other option I see would be to contact an expert.
P.S. Keep in mind that some of the actions mentioned above could void the warranty of your system.
Hope it helps and keep me posted,
Frost_WD

Hey, I got an asus g75vw laptop.
I purchased an SSD a few days ago, my laptop now uses both the SSD and HDD, today it started up fine i however got a message from smartscreen? windows 10 saying my drive needed to be checked or something, well it checked the drives after that i got a blue screen which said: select your keyboard language, i selected VN international upon which it didn't respond, i just pressed the power button off to shut it off that way since i had to leave quickly, after i came back a few hours later that's when it didn't work anymore.

This happens when i click the power button:
These lights come on: power, the lock? button and the HDD light, however this one turns off after 5~ seconds.
My screen is black for the entire duration, no logo no nothing, i can't go into BIOS either.

What i've tried:
- Removing the HDD and SSD multiple times, starting up with only the HDD only the SSD with both etc
- Turning all the power off, removed the battery and charger, pressing it down for 60 seconds and restarting with only the charger back plugged in, i did this for 4~ times.
- I tried removing the battery for an hour or so and nothing.
- I removed everything, battery ssd hdd and let it stay for an hour, also nothing
- I tried using an external monitor but you can already guess, nothing

If anyone got any tips on how to fix this that'll be awesome!

Not really sure what has happened, but last night I put the laptop in sleep mode over the night. When I early today pushed the power button to recover from sleep mode, the screen went all black and stayed like that for a while. Everything indicated that Windows was running in the background as the computer played all sorts of error-sounds that Windows produce when hitting random buttons on the keyboard. After a while I managed to get the screen to work by pressing the power button a few more times (no long-press for reboot), and everything worked fine; e.g., I continued where I left off in Windows the night before. When I then was to shut down the computer, the screen turned black and the optical drive started making a sound as it was trying to locate a disc inside it or something. It stayed like this for almost an hour before I decided to long-press the power button and kill the power. The problem now is that whenever I try to power on the computer, the screen just stays all pitch black, and the optical drive still makes these sounds (as it looks for a CD, or something). Hence, the fan is spinning, and the power LED is green. The HDD led blinks in green light for a couple of times, before it turns orange once, and starts over with green colour again.I have tried powering up the laptop with AC power only w/battery removed, AC power only w/batter attached, and w/batter attached only - no difference. Thats a power issue, simply "Hard Reset"  by removing the power cable from the laptop and then press and hold the power button for more than 20 seconds. Then wait a few seconds and turn it on simply! If it doesn't work, do it 2-3 times, for me it worked the 3rd time. After that, go to a service centre cuz then it might be a hardware issue!

Hi guys, after a couple of weeks of super-slow bootup (1-2 hours) I decided to rollback to the previous windows 10 version. My machine is now stuck on a black screen, and has been for about 3 days! I have tried to get into BIOS or bootup options by using function keys, esc, 0 etc to no avail.

Does anyone have any other suggestions please?

Hi all! Since BIOS-Update my Laptop has sometimes a strange problem: when starting I get a black screen and 4 short beeps. Laptop does not start. But when I remove power cable it works without a problem. Does anyone have the same problem? I want to find out if BIOS 2.35 is buggy (think so) or if my Laptop has a problem. Thank you very much - kind regards,Jürgen Product 20AQCTO1WWBIOS GJET85WW (2.35)SMBIOS Version 2.712 MB RAMSamsung 219,62 GB Core i7 4600 U CPU 2,10 GHzWindows 10

Answer:T440s after BIOS 2.35 update: 4 beeps and black screen when starting unless power cable is removed

Hi, I got a similar problem after the BIOS update about 1 week ago, whether I unplugged or not. What's more, the latest System Update version in my Thinkpad T440s always stops in the middle. At the moment, I just disabled the Sleep and use Hibernate instead to avoid the all black screen and beeps when waking up from sleep.

Hello,

in the beginning of December I bought the above notebook as second hand.

The fomer owner told me that after a Windows 10 update (original OS was Win 8) the Notebook shut down and for him it was not possible to get access neither to the operating system nor to the BIOS. He said he had tried it with all known key combinations.

I have to note, that the notebook came with a non-original HDD (a 320 GB Toshiba HDD) and a non-original power supply (Fujitsu AC Adapter with 4.22A/19V).

Back at home I tried myself several ways to get access to the BIOS (pressing F2, FN+F2, F8, F12 and futher more), but I have not been successful.
Connecting the notebook with a external display gave no signal.

I already thought that I got a complete defektive notebook, although the LED on the frontside were glowing, the battery was obviously charging and the cooling fan startet. The DVD drive also blinked after pressing the power button. Funnily enough the "Num Lock" light was glowing green and I was not able to eliminate it.

So frustrated I put the notebook aside.

At Christmas I startet a second try. Again I tried several key combinations (I think the last one was Window key + Power) and sudeenly the "Leading innovation" logo came and after that a message concerning "RTC".
I got access to the BIOS an edited the date and time.
After that it was possible to reboot the notebook and to install Windows 10 with a USB 3 stick

I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 (Vista 32bit Home Edition) that has suddenly stopped fully booting. When the power button is pressed, the appropriate keyboard/disk lights come on and the fan starts. A black screen appears and then 5-7 seconds later it shuts down and restarts. There is NO mouse cursor or blinking line in the top-left corner as some of the other forums have described - just completely black and the computer continuously restarts.

I am unable to access the BIOS or any other system options at the startup. F10, F8, F2, the ESC key, etc all do NOT work. Although, the interesting thing is that F10 and the ESC keys are the only ones that allow the computer to stay running for longer than 5-7 seconds. When these keys are pressed at the startup, the empty black screen stays "lit" and the computer stays on (no restart). The fan increases in speed (high) after a few minutes, slows down again, and this process is repeated. A hard/forced shutdown is needed to turn the computer off.

I cannot change the boot order since I'm unable to access the BIOS. Thus, my recovery disks won't work. I feel completely stuck here. ANY help or advise is greatly appreciated - particularly concerning a way to change the boot order in this situation.

Answer:Vista fails to fully boot, restarts, black screen, unable to access bios

The fact that the F10 and ESC keys leave it going for a bit extra tells me this is fixable.
The F10 button allows you to enter the setup facility.
The ESC button is used to change the boot order.
There is also an F12 option for your laptop.

I have located the service manual, have a look at 2.3 Troubleshooting flowcharts.
If you require any more help let us know.

Have an HP laptop that shut down during a game on Facebook. Upon reboot, had an error message. Researched message on HP's site, found message was related to hard drive failure. Purchased exact hard drive again and replaced. Tried recovering with disks purchased originally for laptop from HP and got message, system recovery disk did not support this system. (Disk numbers did not match packaging). HP sent new disks, when inserted got message no bootable device found. Contacted HP tech support, was told to power on laptop and repeatedly hit the escape key. Nothing happened, just a black screen. Was then told to unplug laptop, pull battery and hold power button for 20 seconds, then to power on and hit escape repeatedly again. After this attempt the light beside the Caps Lock key and the light beside the Altec Lansing Logo were flashing about once a second and still had black screen. HP tech support then stated the motherboard was bad. Now can't even get into the Bios. I no longer have the original error message as I thought the new hard drive would fix the problem. Just wondered if HP was correct and the motherboard was bad... Have a HP desktop and was told by them it was the motherboard and it wasn't.

I've browsed around various threads and I still couldnt find an answer, so I'll try my luck by asking.

My hp dv5 laptop does not boot up straight away, all that happens a blank screen awith flashing keyboard lights. I can get it to start but only after repeatedly turning it on and off for an hour or two( many wasted hours -_-)
This all started as a minor issue where it would take about 3 or 4 restarts and then would proceed to boot up normally. As time went on it grew increasingly longer, so i looked around on various forums and I read a few problems people had with poorly applied thermal paste on heatsinks. I bought some paste and disassembled my laptop to the mother board( cleaned it out in the process) the previous thermopaste had cemented and so I removed it and applied the new paste. Once assembled, the problem still remained.
I'd appreciate any help as I don't have big mulah to spend on new laptops or expensive parts. Thanks in advance

a couple of months ago the computer stopped working properly, it would turn on, but it would freeze or sometimes, it wouldn't start....I took it to a tech guy who had it for about a month and he couldn't find what the real problem was! then when I had lost all faith, I went into the HP website and saw that my pc's model had an alert from HP, in it it said that some of those models had a bad motherboard and that they would extend warranty and replace the motherboard for free...

I contacted them and they sent DHL to pick up my computer and I got it back 2 weeks later and it had been working great until today!

this is a family computer, but hasn't been used as much lately because now most family members have laptops, still it's used for about 5 hours a day...this morning someone turned it on for about an hour and then turned it off without a problem...3 hours later someone turns it on and this is what happens:

I bought a refurbished T400 less than 3 months ago. Today the power status change beeps started going off every minute or so, the power indicator light went off (while plugged in) and the battery began discharging. At the same time, the screen started flickering. I powered down and tried draining the static by using the old trick: removing the battery and ac plug and pressing the start button 10 times and then holding on the 11th try. Didn't solve the problem. When I use battery only, the screen doesn't flicker. Plug in power and the screen starts flickering again, with the power LED mostly off but occasionally flickering on briefly. The battery is not listed as charging. Nothing to indicate that the power is plugged in, except for the occasional flash of the LED and the power status change beeps. When I power down again and stay plugged in both the power LED and the battery LED keep flashing. First both are flashing green, but in a few minutes the battery light turns flashing orange. If I remove the battery, both LEDs keep flashing. Try to power on that way and nothing happens - the LED's keep flashing, but it doesn't power on at all Battery is new (the first one shipped wouldn't hold a charge at all; this one lists as good condition). I don't have another Lenovo power supply to try, but the current one doesn't appear damaged or bent at all. I tried jiggling it while plugged in and there was no change. The last thing I did before the pr... Read more

Answer:T400 Power Problem: Flashing AC Power LED, No Battery Charge, Screen Flicker, No AC Boot

It sounds like either the ac adapter is sick (most likely) or the jack is bad.  If the power supply doesn't have "Lenovo" moulded into the plastic, it is probably a knock-off, and they use crummy wires between the transformer and the round plug.  This is a common probem for fake adapters

I have a Compaq F500, and when I turn it on, the power button, power indicator, and Wi-Fi indicator all light up, but the screen does nothing, and after about 30 seconds, it restarts, and it's as if it is just failing to start. If there is a way to just wipe the hard drive without having to boot up the computer, that would be a great help. Also, I don't really know that much about hardware, so elaboration of anything an inexperienced person wouldn't know would be helpful, too.

Answer:Power on, lights up, screen does nothing.

It sounds initially like a bad Motherboard, But that's only a guess as many other things could be causing this. First, I would want to know if you had any Viruses lately, or if the unit was dropped recently. Sometimes viruses can wipe the Boot Sector of the Hard drive, while this is rare it's worth considering. Does the screen appear to be illuminated at all? If it illuminates without booting, the screen is probably not bad and this is what I expect from what you're describing.

You'll want to approach the issue as an over system problem at the motherboard level, possibly at the hard drive level. The main thing is, you want to see the familiar boot screen before moving forward.

It's possible too that your laptop has a bios reset Jumper on the motherboard, yes that's inside the case of the laptop. Don't try to fix it yourself unless you're comfortable trying this. And, if you do, make sure to properly ground yourself.

If it were me, I'd try disconnecting the hard drive and attempt to boot from a CD. If you still get no screen activity it could be the Motherboard or screen. Motherboard would
be likely bad if this method proves that the system continues to reboot. Keep in mind that Bad ram may cause the unit to reboot also. If it's bad Ram then you might just have to replace that for a low cost without having to pay for service.

Check out these things and report back.

I'm not sure if this is in the right area or not.

I had my laptop on and running fine for a few hours accumulatively (because I did put it in sleep mode ocasionally) last night and then one time I turned it off and when I turned it back on it lit up but nothing came up on the screen.

I turned it back off by holding down the power button and decided to let it cool down. Later I turned it back on and it was working fine seemingly and then it would "turn off" because the screen went black but the lights were still on. Then it would refuse to turn on for a while. I let it set overnight and I turned it on and it seemed to work again but then it did that thing I mentioned where the screen goes black but the lights are still on and it won't turn back on now. Well, it will turn on because the lights will be on but nothing will show on the screen.

I also think there might be a chance there is a virus on it. My alert keeps popping up and telling me that there is but it says it's quarantined and infected or something. I don't really know how to explain it.

Hello, a week ago I had what I am now refering to as Major Disaster Number One. When I turned on my Laptop it didn't boot had a black screen and made loud beeping noises. This was eventually resolved by removing one of the memory cards as one of the slots was defective. In the meantime I had done quite a lot of fiddling with the system.

The PC had been working fine for a whole week until Major Disaster Number Two happened today. This time thankfully no loud beeping but black screen and flashing num/caps locks (twice). According to the HP website 2 flashes indicates a BIOS problem. I did what was recommended and took battery out and pressed power button for a minute. Tried this several times in different combinations but with no success. Tried reconnecting hard drive and swapping memory around again.

Actually something I should mention is that when I first turned it on today it came up with a white screen, totally white, and after waiting a minute I impatiently turned the computer off at which point it refused to turn on again.

I have looked on various forums including this one but don't know what the PC terminology "post" and "flash" mean with reference to boot up and bios.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a Gateway M685-E laptop running XP and Ubuntu, this morning when pushed the power button nothing would load.

The AC LED stays on as well as the light under the power button, while the NumLock and the CapsLock flash on then off, which might be normal.

The screen stays black but you can tell it is getting power by the shade of black it changes when it powers up.

The last time I used it I shut it off by holding the power button.

So far I have tried:

Removing AC power and battery
Removing RAM
Removing CMOS battery (or whatever its called, it looks like a watch battery)
Removing Hard Drive

I'm praying that its not a fried Mother Board, could it be a corrupted BIOS?
Please help,

Welcome to the forum!

Is the fan connector properly attached? And did you remove the battery when you were doing the fan swap?

If you have an external monitor you can try connecting it to to the T410 and check if you get video output there. Also check if the LCD cable is properly connected.

Context of the problem
Laptop model: L322XBIOS version: A08
I seem to be having virtually the exact same issue as this one.
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19522061.aspx
Except I am on A08.
Basically the laptop will not boot, I cannot even get into the bios because it never boots to the dell logo.  It started happening maybe a week ago, but after a few trials normally it would work again and boot into windows.  At this point though it will not boot at all.
I have tried his solution at the bottom of the page, but after 30 plus trials it still will not update the firmware to A09.
I am currently completely unable to boot to the dell logo, or windows, every time it tries to start it hangs with the keyboard lit up, and the screen fully black.  I can boot to the dos bios update utility as he explains in his post, but again it will not update the firmware ever.  Any idea what I should do?
Is there anyway I can force it to boot into the bios so I can try to change some settings?  I looked but could not find any jumpers in the documentation for resetting the bios.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hey guys.

Ok so the other day i was on my laptop and suddenly the screen went black, but the fan was still running and the lights were on. I restarted my laptop and the screen was still black yet everything else seemed to be running fine. I had a quick read on some forums and overheating was suggested. My laptop does get rather hot so i thought this could be the problem. I removed the heatsink and fans, removed all of the dust and put more heat paste onto the processor.
This time, the laptop turned on. The computer was running about 5-10mins, i had connected to the internet and windows live, then the computer restarted itself. After the restart, the same black screen problem occured. I decided to have another fiddle with the parts, and again, it started up. But this time, the computer went terribly slow on the windows loading screen. So slow that i thought it had frozen. It also sounded as if the fans had turned off.
I've been trying and fiddling round with components all day today. I found a post which said to remove things one at a time and try to start up the laptop to see what happens. The only thing which caused the laptop to turn on was the LAN card. As soon as the computer was restarted, it froze at the windows start up again.

I find it weird that it works sometimes and then others it just doesn't. If there is anyone out there with a solution it would be glady appreciated. I don't think it's an overheating problem as i've made sure it's cooled down propperly an... Read more

If the computer is still running then I think the screen issue may be caused by a bad connection for the backlighting system (or a bad inverter if it's a CCFL backlight). This is if the screen goes completely black, if it is black with some apparent light still I would guess a bad video connection. I think you may have made things worse with your attempted fix :/.

Model CQ61 319WM This is a friend's computer.  Yes, it's old.  But, it was working fine until it went into sleep mode last night.  Hasn't come up since. Searches took me to this HP support page.  Win+B and Power on does not show the BIOS restore screen.  It just shows the same black screen.  It mentions trying more than once.  I tried at least a half dozen times.  Removed the battery and unplugged the power for a few seconds prior to some of the tries. The BIOS download (sp48895.exe) does not provide the option to format a USB drive as bootable.  I searched around and created my own bootable thumb drive.  Then, copied the BIOS files onto it. Unfortunately, that method also uses the Win+B and power on to bring up the boot order screen.  All I get is black. There are a bunch of "black screen" threads on here.  I've read several of them.  But, I haven't found any others that appear to apply to this model. Suggestions appreciated. Drake Christensen

Hi, I was wondering if someone could explain exactly what the the PCI Bus Power Management and PCI Express Power Management options do in the BIOS.     I couldn't find a chipset diagram and I'm not sure if these options affect the SSD that I have installed. As I understand it any bus power saving features can affect the performance of an SSD. Thanks in advance for any clarification.

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue.http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/Laptops-and-netbooks/Yoga-Series/yoga-500-15ibd/downloads/D...I haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite P300-1F0, yesterday it was working fine, I turn it off without nothing extraordinary happens.
Although later when I wanted to turn it on I pressed the power button but the screen wasnt working, I tried to connect an external screen but nothing was shown on it, although the power lights were on, the cd reader opened and closed like normally does, and I could hear the fans working.

Than I realise the windows 7 welcome sounds weren't playing even after some minutes with the laptop turned on, and that the mouse laser only worked for some seconds before it turns off.
This was when I started to belive that it wasnt a screen problem but something else.

I read some forums, and I tried to disconnect the power cable, take out the battery, pressing the power button for 60sec and turn it on, and it worked, everything was working fine, I used the computer for some hours without any issue.

Today the same problem occured, and I tried to fix it the same way I did yesterday, holding the power button for 60 sec, but this time it didnt work. I retried this for 3 to 5 times and nothing.
After some hours letting the computer turned off, resting, I retried the process and now it worked.
Now I'm afraid to turn off the laptop, because to turn it on I need a lot of pacience and time.

What could be the problem, and how I solve it?
Can you help me?

cumpliments,
Adriano

Answer:Satellite P300 - power lights on, but nothing happens on screen

>I read some forums, and I tried to disconnect the power cable, take out the battery, pressing the power button for 60sec and turn it on, and it worked, everything was working fine, I used the computer for some hours without any issue.

Yey, sometimes this workaround is helpful to bring the unit back the life.

> What could be the problem, and how I solve it?
Its difficult to say what cause this. The Satellite P300 is an old notebook model therefore it could be possible that one of the hardware parts starts to malfunction.
It would be interesting to know if usage of different RAM modules would change the notebook functionality. If you have some spare compatible RAM modules you could test it.

In worst case it could be possible that notebook motherboard start to malfunction.
This would be the worst case? I hope for you that it?s not mobo related issue.

PS: check if your BIOS is up to date. In case its not the latest version, try to update the BIOS.

all the parts are brand new, i can only deduce that the motherboard or cpu are faulty

please help

Answer:No bios screen, No beeps, No keyboard lights

Lo mate Sorry about your problem. I can relate the same thing happend to me about 2 weeks back! its a bummer.
Anway to cut a long story short I finally gave in and took it in to a local shop they also couldnt find anything wrong with it.
If I were you I would send it back to the people who you purchased it off and see what they say I did that and it tured out to be a faulty motherboard they were happy to send a replacement. It still didnt work with the new one! So I decided to buy a brand new CPU with a higher FSB not using my old one. My old CPU wasnt comptible even though my board was suppoed to take it.

Double check things and tell the supplier.

good luck hope it works out for ya mate.

Hello All -I'm posting to the forum as I'm at a complete loss with support. I recently purchased a ThinkPad T450s, which worked well for about a week, but has since failed to boot properly after normal use. The motherboard / system board has been replaced three times by Lenovo support (twice with the depot and once on-site). After receiving the system yesterday from the depot (again after normal use and trying to resume from sleep mode), the ThinkPad won't boot. The power light blinks on and the backlit keyboard lights up for a few seconds, only to have the system shut itself down with a light pop. This cycle repeats with the system attempting to power up anywhere from two attempts to eleven (no BIOS flashes or any other signs of life). I've tried all options noted in the forum and suggestions from support (remove battery, hard reset, etc.), but haven't had any luckAgain, I'm at a loss, and simply want my system to work or be replaced. If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.??Thank you!

Question: T400 black screen

Hi there, I recently bought a seller-refurbished ThinkPad T400.  This week I had the problem that when switching it on, the screen would go super dark after about 1 second. I could still see the icons but they were too dark to recognise properly. Now my friend google told me it might be the inverter or a fuse. Since I still have a coupole of days warranty, I have already contacted the seller and wanted to send it back to be replaced. However, yesterday I switched it on and everything worked as normal.  I presume that if it was the inverter or a fuse then it wouldn't go back and work without any issues. My question is, could it have been casued by a wrong setting or anything else than a hardware issue?  It would look pretty weird to send back a perfectly working laptop to be replaced now.. Thanks in advance

Answer:T400 black screen

If it happened at the BIOS boot splash, it's probably a hardware issue. Could have been a bad cable.

I recently replaced the motherboard of a very old (out of warranty) T42.  This seems to have solve the problem that I was having with the LCD display going in and out, as well as the display of an external monitor, when plugged in.  Now, when an external monitor is plugged in, the display is fine.  However, upon powering on of the laptop, I have NO lights go on on the dashboard to indicate that there is any power to the laptop.  There is also NO display on the LCD.  It is completely off, as if it is not getting any power.  However, as I said, when I have the external monitor plugged in, I can see the screen no problem.  Also, when I toggle back and forth between external and the laptop display, I notice a difference in screen color when it is set to the laptop... but still no picture.  Lastly, when I Fn F5, the bluetooth light appears green on the dashboard, but all others remain out.  HELP ME PLEASE!?!!?!?!

As the thread title says, my lenovo t400's screen recently started flashing. It wasn't that bad at first but it increased in frequency and started to be very annoying. I noticed changing from battery to cable would temporarily stop it, also turning down the brightness helped. However the problem started getting worse and now when I am forced to have it on the lowest brightness settings. If I turn it up it starts flashing erratic and then the screen turns off. The system itself keeps working though and if I turn the laptop off or in sleep mode and then turn it on again the screen "works" again (still with flashing). Ofcourse if I left the brightness above its lowest level it will instantly go black again. Also most likely related, half of the screen (left side) has taken on an "redish" collor. What could be the problem and is it something I can fix myself?

Answer:t400 screen flashes then goes black

If you were to boot into to the BIOS, does the left side of the screen show "redish" color?Try moving your LCD panel back and forth, does it stop it?Could be caused by faulty LCD cable or faulty LCD Panel. Also try plugging it with an external monitor to confirm if its caused by faulty SBO.Thanks

Hi all, I have a T400 that has been having an issue with the screen going black. The mouse moves, but nothing I click on responds & then the screen goes black & comes right back up. It doesn't restart, I don't lose internet connection when it happens. It dosen't behave like a loose cable (that I've read about. Doesn't happen when I move the screen). It is not at startup. It is seemingly random. It can be days or even weeks between occurrances. I'll be working, everything is great and then...it's not. 10 sec later, back to normal. Any thoughts? I did upgrade the HD to an SSD quite a while ago, and other than this issue, the thing has been a champ. I'm looking at replacing it if I can't figure this out, but I'd much prefer to get it stable. Thanks for any leads you may have.

a friend of mine gave me his Lenovo T400 to install Windows XP on it It previously worked fine with windows 7 and 8.1so it boots in windows XP preinstall screen, it formats hdd and like usual instalation automatically restarts after that BUT its black screen, lights and sounds show that it works and goes to next screen BUT the screen is still black. Powering down and turn on again is not showing any screen picture. Opened it removed Bios battery, turned up after few on and off it starts it reset bios.So now there is picture and it goes on the next screen of windows instalation like normal, after installing devices and stuff it automatically restarts like usual BUT it has NO screen again, black screen, lights and sounds again show that its loading windows end instalation screen but no picture on the screen.Reset BIOS again, it starts normaly and this time it shows BSoD with code 0x7B, after BSOD Black screen again  Maybe its a BIOS setting?!? tried installing with drivers for AHCI and tried installing without drivers for Compatible , what else can it be? Updated the bios to latest version, same result. To say it again - it works fine with other windows, but XP must be installed

History - T400 (2767-31U), Win 7.  LCD screen broken due to a drop. Laptop still worked with an external monitor via VGA slot and I ordered a replacement LCD. The replacement finally (used-off ebay) arrived and I followed the HMM manual and replaced the LCD. But it still does not work. I can continue to use the ext monitor without any issues. The replacement LCD was the full assembly not just the LCD screen. Here is what I noticed: 1. When booting up, I see the Thinkpad logo very very faintly before it goes fully black again.2. All the LCD panel lights work fine - Wireless, BT, HDD, Battery, Power etc etc including the reading light.3. The laptop recognizes when I open and close the lid and switches on the ext monitor accordingly. Here is what I did (I followed the HMM to the detail):4. When I replaced the LCD, I noticed that the original LCD had 2 black wires insulated at the ends originating from the bottom left area of the LCD that were not actually plugged into any area of the MB. I did the same on the replacement LCD and left them as it is. I don't even know what these are.5. I connected the other 3 wires(white, grey and black) and the main connector as the original LCD/HMM. 6. I uninstalled the display drivers and restarted and Win 7 automatically installed the drivers again.7. The Most important part - The original LCD when powered on, DID have backlight showing me the mangled area of the screen so I know it worked before replacement. I have read quite a ... Read more

Answer:T400 LCD screen black after replecement

It is possible you bought a faulty screen. You could reinstall the original screen to see if the backlight comes on. I am assuming you did not have the main battery installed when you disconnected or connected the screen. If you had a battery installed, it is easy to blow a fuse. If the new screen is and was bad when you got it, it could blow a fuse. Do you know if either or both screens have a, LED backlight? BTW, the 2 wires probably have a red end on one and a blue end on the other. They are for an optional WWAN card

I have a T400 with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 graphics card.  The problem that I am experiencing is that recently the docking and undocking process has dramatically changed.  For the first three months that I had the T400 and the docking station, I would be able to dock the T400 with screen closed and immediately (e.g. 2-3 seconds) see the display transfer to the external Lenovo monitor.  Further, when I undocked the T400 (using the button on the docking station) and opened the T400 screen, it would immediately light up.  Recently (about 2-3 weeks ago) that process changed.  Now, when I undock the T400 from the docking station and open the screen, it won't light up.  The laptop continues to run (e.g. Bluetooth, Wifi, battery, and hard drive lights all still on and active).  But, the screen won't turn on.  I actually have to power down the T400 and restart to get the screen to display.  And, when I dock the laptop, it can take 10-20 seconds for the T400 to switch to display on the external monitor.  I am unable to tie this change to any driver updates or Windows updates.  But, it's always possible.  Any suggestions?

Answer:T400 black screen when undocking

I'm assuming the usual that you have checked on Lenovo for driver and BIOS updates etc and still no joy. Don't have experience with your problem on a T400, but it does sound just like the problems we had early on with Vista on the T61 (with an Nvidia graphics chip). One workaround to try on the undock/blackscreen is to close the lid again, let the machine go into Sleep (should only take a few seconds), then open the lid and see if your screen wakes up. Sucks to have to do that, but sure beats a complete reboot.  Other thing you probably have already done, but... if your system has switchable graphics go into the BIOS and set that to Discrete Only. Switchable graphics was a nice idea, but I think in the real world it has turned out to be a real headache. Good luck

While using the T61 under battery power the screen went blank and the power on and battery lights went out. No response to any key or mouse clicks. Would not power back on.Removed battery and waited several minutes. Reinserted battery (fully charged) into base and tried powering on again. Power and battery light both went on for about 1/2 second then the PC was again DOA. Also tried another good battery and AC power with battery but same results. What gives. System has 2.2 dual core processor and 3 gigs of ram. Where do I go from here.

Answer:T61 died when running; screen went blank and power on and battery lights went out

you can try take out the battery & plug then pressing the power botton 10 times then plug the ac in no batt. see if it will power on. does this have the Nvidia GPU?

Hi & hope someone can give some guidance.I have a T400, Win7Pro 32bit that has been acting strange. It is a problem that I sent it back for right after I got it, but now am out of warranty. While using it (not at start up, usually has been running for a while), the screen will flash, then go completely black for a moment, then return to its previous state. Last night it happened while I was on the webcam, and I never lost audio only video. The computer does not give any indication that it is going to sleep. The previous times it has happened (all in the last three months), I did not lose anything I was working on.I know this is terrible, but I am not sure which display this is. It only says ThinkPad display 1440X900. Location is on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series.I've been searching, and seen something about a switchable graphics problem. Could this be it? How would I correct that? Or am I looking at a dying something? Thanks for any help you can offer. Sam

My new T400 (Windows 7 64bit) does the same thing.  I found that if I manually put the machine in sleep mode after attempting to wake it up from standy by, then wake it up from the sleep mode, the normal screen returns.  It's not a fix but until a solution is found, it might save you a little time from rebooting.

I really baby my  2-3 year old T400.  If it's on and I'm away for a few hours, the screen would go black and freeze.  A few times CNTL+ALT+DEL would bring it back, but then the next time a reboot was necessary.  During startup some screens would remain black and others would flash past.  At the end, the homepage would be black.  Finally, I noticed a faint buzzing sound coming from the right hinge area.  Getting closer to listen, I could smell an electrical smell.  Not good. I took the laptop to a friend with a monitor and there it worked fine (laptop screen still black).  So the screen connection appears to be shorted.  It's not in warrantee. I'd give details about configuration, but can't...high end of performation. Advice please: 1.  Repair the screen connection?2.  Can I buy a used T400 on ebay and literally replace the guts with my machine's?  If so, what would need to be replaced to make the ebay machine turn on and be exactly like my machine?I'm thinking it'sw easier to do this than the screen connection repair.3.  I could probably get by with a cheap monitor, but I'm afraid the thing would catch fire!! Any other suggestions? Thanks,Rich
