Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Question: Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect. There's a free version that makes clones. Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out. You don't get recovery disks. The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive. So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution. When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive. If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

I purchased a P51s with 4 GB of RAM in a single DIMM. I want to upgrade by adding a second DIMM. For best performance, do both DIMMs need to be the same size and speed? Or can I add a larger 8GB or 16GB DIMM in the second slot? Does it have to be DDR4-2133 or can it be DDR4-2400 which I see online more often? For a hard drive, I would like to upgrade from the 500GB drive to a 512GB SSD. Which interface type do I need and which models are compatible with the P51s? Since Windows 10 comes pre-installed, and I don't think my current drive and the SSD can be installed at the same time, how can I transfer Windows 10 to the new SSD? Thank you!

Has anyone upgraded their X220 to a 500gb HD? I see that the current 320gb i have is a "seagate momentus thin" drive and the space for the HD does not fit a standard thickness laptop drive.  Any input on whether there are HD's that would fit and if they would get me to the bigger drive i'd love to have?

Loosening the screw at the HD panel does not release the panel.  Has anyone removed the original hard disk from the U330?  What am I missing?

Answer:I'm trying to upgrade my U330 hard disk to a 500GB 7200 Seagate drive

For U330, you need to loose 3 screws. One screw located at the hard disk panel and two screws located next to the first screw. They are in the same position of the hard disk screw hole. After losen those screws, You can pool the hard disk tray out.

i recently bought an internal seagate 250gb hard drive and when i installed it it is only finding 232gb i was wondering how i can access the other 18gbs if that is possible. i have seen the 137gb barrier but not something like this. all help would be appreciated.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated. http://www.vatgia.com/pictures_fullsize/tut1254386189.jpg

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Answer:PC won't format 250GB hard drive

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

Hi all, hopefully someone can help?Approx 2 years ago i bought a Medion portable hard drive from my local Aldi. Everything has been fine until today when the connection seems loose. If i connect the hard drive to the cable and plug it into my laptop the hard drive turns on, but the laptop doesn't recognise it, and says its malfunctioned. How do i go about fixing it if at all, and have i lost everything on my portable hard drive. Many thanks,Chris

Answer:Medion 250gb Hard Drive

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Ok, I just built my own custom computer with a little from my friends. And we got it all running and working now, however Windows XP Pro is only detecting the 250GB as 130GB, and this is even when we "formated," and partitioned with Windows XP Pro.

Its not the Hard drive, because we built 2 of the exact same (1 for me and 1 for my bro) however its happening on both machines.

Any help, without wipping the currect data on them? (We've already transfered the data from our laptops to the new computers with our 5pc network)

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,
I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,
s.

Which is 2 partitions short of the Lenovo in #1. The 2 missing 1. Lenovo D: drive NTFS partition and 2. 1000MB partition.
Maybe I should keep them all...

Hi there, I've got a 250gb maxtor HD and it can't be detected in bios or something is wrong. WHENEVER its connected (either on its own or with another drive), it says "error loading OS".
(PC boots fine with my other Maxtor 120gb HD)

On some sites it says to set Bios HD Access to LARGE instead of auto/lba etc

BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Dom

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Shamus

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

or
2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here: http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/specs.asp?ID=1971

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&type=product&id=1155848396138

Thanks so much,
James

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks

Answer:WD 250GB Portable Hard Drive requesting format

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

I'm not sure if the hard drive is failing, its an older IDE drive. I just formatted the drive and disk manager only shows it with 26.9GB and no other unallocated space. Is there any way to reclaim the lost space or is this a typical sign of a drive on its last legs?

There is in regards to my SimpleTech portable hard drive and My new Dell Inspiron N7010 17R which has windows 7. It tells me that it can not recognize the device when I plug it into my USB port. It works great in my Dell Inspiron that has windows XP and my Lenovo at work that also runs windows XP. I have tried another laptop at my place of employment that has windows 7 on it and I get the same error message on that machine also. It has to be a conflict with the SimpleTech 250gb and Windows 7.
Your Help is very much appreciated!!

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Hi

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

Greetings

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? I have a Dell Inspirion 1100 with a celeron processor, purchased 1.5 years ago. I have tried the case on other computers that were better than mine, I have tried the hard drive straight into a computer and it works fine. I have the... Read more

I am using T450s that has 500GB HDD.  I'd like to change the hard drive to a SSD.  I want to do this because it is too slow and it sometimes freezes.  I have used the laptop for 9 months and it is my first time to try changing hard drive. My questions are how I can make it. i) What kind of SSD can I use?ii) Do I need to buy and install Windows in the new hard drive?  iii) Installing a msata SSD and keeping HDD would be better?  iv) How about warranty when I change it?v) Is there any other things I should concern? Thank you.

Answer:changing hard drive T450s

Most 2.5" 7mm-thick drives will work. You have a windows license on the machine, not the hard drive. I prefer the mSATA M.2 solution, but that is my personal opinion. The disk is considered customer-serviceable. Backup restore options depend on your OS.If it is freezing, it is likely a software problem. Cloning the drive is unlikely to fix that.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T450s that's about 1.5 years old. I've recently run into some reoccuring issues which are hard drive related, and think my hard disk might be on its way out. I saw a Youtube video that suggested replacing the hard drive might be easy, but I wanted to request a little guidance on this first here if it's available. Two main questions:1). How do I know exactly what hard drive to buy (i.e., what hard drives online are compatible with my laptop)?2). Is replacing the hard drive in fact pretty easy to do? Any particular set of instructions that you would recommend? Appreciate any guidance you all can give!

My new ThinkPad X201 is 500GB, W7/XP and my hard drive is almost full. It is my work computer, not used for email, internet, gaming or movies. I need to reclaim my disk space.

I've performed C: cleanup, CCleaner, deleted all restore points & turned off Rescue & Recovery since I use Rollback Rx & Drive Cloner Rx.

C: properties are 420GB used, 34GB free.

Device Space Manager shows "Unscanned, 375.9GB, 82.64%, 560 files" & says "files are left unscanned due to access restrictions."

WinDirStat shows C: has an <unknown> file 381.6GB, 83.9% & free space is 34.7GB, 7.6%.

TreeSize shows C: is 39.7GB, with 34.6GB free space. It has 2 files (RRbackups & System Volume Information) with an exclamation point inside a yellow circle & [Access is denied], 0GB each.

I use Rollback Rx, which has a 12/10/10 baseline of 333MB, a snapshot 4/6/11& 4/11/11.

I also use Drive Cloner Rx, but it saves to an external hard drive. I'm running Cloner right now (just in case) & I'm using a different computer to communicate here.

I've talked to Lenovo support (almost 2 hrs.!) & let the tech take over control.

The problem is in the system folder with the file <unknown> 381.6GB that takes up 83.9% of my hard drive. According to him, this folder probably contains system restore points & it's highly likely that if this file were deleted, the space would be reclaimed. However, he i... Read more

Answer:500GB hard drive almost full :(

Greetings, fst-tlk.

AFAIK, no Registry tweaking is needed to dump System Restore points. Simply navigate to the System Restore tab (in XP, it's Control Panel > System > System Restore; in 7, it's CP > System > System Protection > System Restore > Configure), turn off System Restore for any drives listed, and reboot. This should flush all Restore Points. You can then navigate back in and re-enable.

There are also settings in each area to lower the amount of disk space System Restore can use - I suggest a couple of gb, which should be sufficient.

First of all, I have a Dell Inspiron Quad core, 4GB ram, XP. Also installed are two iOmega USB external drives, 360GB and 500GB, both FAT32 units.

I have run this setup for quite a while with no problems. I use the 500GB drive as a "G" drive to hold download data. Had no problems last night, leave computer running all night, this morning I have blue screen. Turn everything off, let it sit, turn back on, now everything seems OK. This has happened a couple of times before, but always boots back up.

When I turn on the USB drives, they both fire up, show the little window for Autoplay, then the window for What Do You Want To Do. Fine.

Decide to backup a few files from my main drive (in case I have a problem with it) to the G-drive, which has room. After a minute of transfering a folder gfrom C to G, a window pops up saying that it can't tranfer a particular file, and the tranfer stops.

G-drive seems sorta dead. The computer recognises it in My Computer, but won't open and show the files on it. Right clicking on G-drive shows 0 room used, 0 room left, all blue disc. Also says drive is working properly.

Nothing will open the drive, all onboard diagnostics says it is working properly. Try to run a Norton Disc Doctor on it, and it says it does not contain a recognised file system.

No amount of unplugging or reboots help. All the iOmega webpage stuff refers to a problem where the computer does not recognise the drive. My computer recognises it, bu... Read more

Answer:USB 500GB Hard Drive problem

If possible, try the drive on a different PC and see if it behaves the same way (and it probably will). The first thing I would do is try to rescue the most important files first. I had an external USB drive do the exact same thing you're describing here, you can read about how I was able to recover the files in this thread, and how I permanently fixed the issue in this thread. The program listed in the first link/thread should allow you to at least access the drive to save the more important things first, just in case the steps in the 2nd thread don't work, because the program in the 1st link does not actually perform a repair of any type, it just allows you to access the data so it can be copied to a safe location (hopefully). Anyway- let us know how it goes, I hope this info helps!

Just bought a brand new computer which should come with a 500gb hd but when installing windows Xp with SP2, it came up as 235gb. I know this means it is probably a 250gb hd as you do lose some space. I have heard that it maybe a bios problem but seeing as the computer is brand new, I just can't see it.The info that came with it though, states that using the wrong operating system can stop the real size being detected, is this true or have I been scammed?

Answer:500GB of Hard Drive is Not Working

I assume you have already reseated both the sata data cable and the pw connector.

Is the drive being recognized in the bios? If so, I would pull the drive and connect it to a working system. Once connected, you should be able to access the drive and copy whatever you want.

If it is not being IDed by the bios, you can still recover data however it become a LOT more expensive. The drive would need to go to a data recovery shop.

It does little good now however you see why we stress backups SO much. With an image backup of the drive in question, you simply install a new drive and restore your image. Done in less than 30min.

Hi, I'm new here..thanks to your site for helping me rid my kids' Windows 7 pc from a fake AV with Malwarebytes.

I've been looking through "My Computer" and I just don't know what's clogging up the hard drive. There is only 10% of it left, and I've saved and eliminated some bigger video/image files.

Very few games, and really not a lot of programs. I'm baffled. The computer is only a little over a year old. Music could be the problem, but I can't even find the individual files, like I can on my mac. How do I find what is taking up all the space?

Sorry if this has been covered. I searched using my own way of describing the problem and came up empty. Thanks for any advice! Karen

Answer:my 500GB hard drive is nearly full!?

Use Disc Cleanup. Be sure to delete the restore points (disc cleanup will delete all but the most current) (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Delete-files-using-Disk-Cleanup). Chances are system restore is the problem. You can also use an app such as treesize to see where the space is being used (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/)

I just replaced my 500GB HDD with a 500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD. Works really well. My T450s also has a 16GB M.2 drive that Expresscache was using with the HDD. I deleted/removed Expresscache. I now want to use the 16GB M.2 drive as general storage. It's not very big but I will find some use for it. Anyway, Disk Management shows the M.2 drive as a 14.91GB "OEM Partition" but provides no options to edit/delete/modify this partition and it is not listed in Windows Explorer. I have read that I can delete the partition using diskpart or another 3rd party partitioning tool but before I do, is it safe to do so? Is there anything important on OEM partition that should be retained besides the cache that Expresscache was using? I have searched this forum and elsewhere and I haven't found an answer to this question. thanks, Brian

Here is my plan.
I purchased Acronis True Image Ver 2010 which is supposed to let
me install the new drive as a slave in the computer and clone
the disk 1 drive data into the disk 2 new drive and make it bootable.
Then I can remove the original disk 1 drive and make the new
drive disk 1.
Then I purchased the Acronis Disk Director 10.0 which will allow
me to create extended partion and logical drives E, F, G H
in the new disk while leaving all system and boot files on drive C.

Drive D is the CD-rom.

I guess I will spend about $79 dollars on this software
and I know there are probably lots of free software utilities
that can do the same thing. Does anyone know of one single
product that will do all that I want to do described above ?

I want to upgrade the 500gb HDD to an SSD on an Thinkpad Twist S230u with windows 8 but don't want to lose the data and programs installed on the drive and have to start over. I tried to clone it but no software could do it. I tried acronis and EasyToDo. I was able to clone it with a duplicator but it wasn't bootable. Am I to assume that what I need to do is the following - 1- Create the recovery media on a 32gb usb stick. 2- back up the drive using Acronis (or other) 3- Physically replace the drive 4- boot to the USB Recovery Media and bring the system back to it's original state out of the box but with the SSD Drive. 5- Use Acronis (or other) to restore back up made of the 500gb prior to removal. Thanks in advance! Scott Fischer

Answer:I want to upgrade the 500gb HDD to an SSD on an S230u with windows 8 but want clone the drive

Before you start cloning your HDD with acronis, you have to prepare the SSD: at first: connect your SSD with USB to your notebook and  1. Start CMD.EXE as Admin 2. type: "diskpart" 3. type: "select disk x " x = Letter of your SSD 4.  type: "list partition" the drive should be unformatted 5.  type: "create partition primary align=1024" 6. type: "active" 7. type: "format fs=ntfs" --> wait some minutes 8. type: "assign letter=x" --> For example "x" 9. type: "exit" Start acronis true image 2013 (trial version) select "Backup" without empty sectors you can select any partitions, so also the the invisible lenovo backup paritions The Backup can be "Restore"-d to the SSD, incl.  GPT (MBR like in UEFI Systems) After all, the SSD is ready to use. Booting on USB gives here a blue screen. I tought it was my fault. It isnt. You can build in the SSD into your SATA Port and Windows 8 will boot very well. Sorry for my bad english

Last week I ran into problems with my hard drive. I've had my T410i, which is an excellent laptop, but the the hard drive failed on me. It was the free 500GB hard drive upgrade. I tried for about a week to recover windows and install linux but the **bleep** thing just won't properly write to the hard drive, which I only found out today. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had problems with their hard drives. Maybe it's just this one in particular? If I saw this coming, I would've not opted for the free upgrade. Well, I have to say, that the IBM support is WAY better than the shipping support I got. I got directed to the IBM support center in Atlanta, GA, instead of some third world country call center like I had during the shipping process. It's covered under warranty, and I should get a replacement. But it wouldn't be any good if the replacement would fail just as quickly. That's the end of my rant.

Was the hard drive previously working in the laptop before stopping working? Or did you try it in the laptop after it stopped working via USB?

A operating system needs to be installed on the hard drive for it to actually boot. If one isn't it will ask you to insert a bootable device in order to load an operating system.

I have to say I am a little worried about my hard drive. Often I bought it for the purpose to protect my game videos, and some program files. For a long time, it behaved rightly with my HP windows 7 desktop when directly used. Sometimes ago I decided to let this old PC alone and bought a Macbook pro. The latter has no such a SATA interface for me to input the data from this drive. For the convenience, I borrowed this SATA dock from my brother . ( I have to admit previously I once use another dock to exchange the data . )

My mac just could not recognize my drive as a normal one. I am not sure where the problem lies in. The key is that other drives have no similar issue with this dock. I wonder if anything happen before in the process I handle the data with another dock.

Appreciated for your any idea.

Answer:Previous WD hard drive 500GB could not be recognized as it always..?

It is because the file system is not compatible with Macintosh. OS X only supports HFS. Most HDDs are formatted to NTFS or FAT32. You will need to reformat to make it work, but you will lose all your data.

I went home from break from college and forgot my power chord to my external hard drive. I wanted to watch a movie on my drive and i found a power chord that fit except forgot to check to voltage. I gave the drive too much voltage. I think i burnt out my drive. I have a lot of valuable information on it so I need to get it working again. When I plug the real power chord a light flickers then goes off. I need to know how to fix the drive. Do I need to take it a part? Im pretty sure the hard drive it self will still be fine. Please Help me out!

Hi

USB devices such as pendrives, flash sticks and external drives all use pretty much the same technology, as such they can and do go bad...if its wanting the drivers for it then chances are the small board inside the unit has gone bad...there is no cure for it as far as i know

I bought an IOMEGA 500gb Hard Drive to used with an Advent T9100 Desktop and a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Laptop. According to the box it is easy to install.Although I get the familiar ping when it is pluged into a USB port it is otherwise more or less invisible with the result that it is unusable. The IOMEGA web-site is of a similar standard as no telephone number is visible. Having failed to locate a driver (as the model number on the box could nto be found on the web-site!) I made one attempt to submit a query and received a response that referred me to a form to complete that was not a form but an endless spiral of alleged contact methods.Entering the serial number indicated that it was a 60gb portable drive!I am returning it to store for a refund as ast best it can be described as totally and utterly useless and not fit for purpose.

With XP (which I guess you have) or Vista you should not have to install drivers as it should be plug and play.Does it have it own power supply or does it draw from the USB port?Have you tried different USB ports and what shows up in Device Manager?

Grateful for any advice.

I am using a XP Professional with SP3 and I am trying to upgrade from a 500GB to a 2TB Hard Drive. A few years back I went from a 250GB HD to the current 500GB HD. Then everything went fine. Now, it doesn't matter whether I use Automatic, Manual, WD's Software or Acronis all I get is a patchwork screen of separate letters with black space and nothing can be done with it.

Now I did notice that the data was transferred to the 2TB HD. It just won't boot.

I have plugged the HD in by its self - no good. If I plug in both, it boots to the 500GB and the files can be seen on both the 500gb and the new 2TB HD's.

Well, here is a Hijack This scan. Please try and help me. If you need more info, just ask.

Hi I'm Mark. I'm having a problem when it comes with my notebook [dell inspiron 600m] and my external hard disk [WD Elements 250gb]. when I connected the 5 pin cable of the external hard disk to the usb port of the notebook, the connection is seem to unstable or on-and-off, therefore making file copying impossible. The external hard drive and the notebook is in good condition, although I can't really figure out what seems to be the problem. I am also having a theory that this might be a power supply problem. I would be very grateful to someone who can help me about this matter..

The Acer C: drive is now full and the Data D: drive is empty, but it is not recognizing it automatically. This computer is my brother's, he bought it new and has it at my house. It came formatted with no disc's and I'm not sure where his books for it are. Can anyone tell me how to activate the second hard drive so I can use itunes and download video, etc.

It would be very much appreciated. My brother uses the computer here but it has been here for at least 3 years maybe and the book is misplaced. He mostly uses it for youtube, facebook, and stuff like that and is less computer educated than I am at tech stuff, which isn't saying much.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Boot into Bios, usually by hitting F8 as soon as the POST screen appears and see if the hard drives are both recognised. If the spare drive does not show in the Bios it either has a fault or it is not correctly connected.

What OS is on the PC.

My current HDD is a 100Gb 7200rpm SATA model, but I'd like to upgrade to a new Hitachi 500Gb hard drive - it's 2.5in (obviously) but it's 12.5mm compared to 9.5mm on my current drive. Also, the interface is SATA/300 - I see that the OEM drive transfers at 150Mb/s (SATA/150) ... Any experts out there know if this will work, or even fit???Thanks,Floating.Static

Hello. Recently I split my 500GB into two volumes halving it into 250GB for each volume. One volume, which is the G:, is a FAT32 format, and the other "H:" is NTSC. I performed this on a XP, then recently I got my new computer I tried plugging in the external but it only read the FAT32 one. And on disk manager it shows both of them, but the other one is not readable. I then tried it on my other laptop which is also a Windows 7, it didn't show either. I have really important files in there. What can I do? Please help

Answer:External Hard Drive 500Gb Kingmax Question

Hello tygster, welcome to the forum

I have no idea why this is happening

You could use a live linux CD to allow you to copy the data across to the linux desktop and then format the NTFS partition to FAT 32 before copying the files back to the disc.
Warning because this is a live cd you will not be able to turn your PC during this operation as all files on the linux desktop will be lost.

Got a bit of a strange one im looking for help with please.

Had my WD 500GB external hard drive for over 12 months.

Latley when I go to windows explorer, right click on the drive and left click on properties i get a reading says free space is 273gb. when I try and past something in there, a movie for example, i get an error saying there isnt enough space left. File of the movie is roughly 3gb.

To trouble shoot i tried to past a small picture file and that worked fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Strange problem with WD 500GB external hard drive

Ok been working on this problem since posting question with a friend.

Confirmed its a FAT32 error

opened cmn and ran CONVERT e: /FS:NTFS /v

when it asks for what drive use My Passport

if it asks for dismount i selected yes

i then received an error saying the volume has inconsistencies so i ran chkdsk e: /f

when that finished i ran the CONVERT e: /FS:NTFS /v which worked and im now filling up my external hard drive once again!

IMPORTANT - to ensure you dont loose any valueable data on your drive backup before trying this, this worked for my and I cant guarantee this will work for everyone.

Hope it helps someone out there.

every time I try at about 10% with 8 hours remaining I get the following error message an unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the open file is no longer valid
it does this at the same file every time, if I copy all files but the one that gave the error message, the next file in line will give the same message and so on.

the two are both external drives 2TB exact same make and model from the same store bought at the same time

what do I need to do do fix this and make the files copy?

Googling the error message only brought up DVDRW related problems not external hard drive problems

Answer:copying 500GB of data from one 2TB hard drive to another (error)

Alduins have you used any registry cleaners lately? if so you may have a problem with something that has been cleaned by some lousy software which most claim to enhance the machine.

What I might suggest is to try and put the data onto another separate drive and see if the problem still exists. If it doesn't then maybe the second drive is going south.
It may be then have to be a hard drive test to see if one of the drives is bad

Personally I don't like large drives to be honest as a large drive means a large mount of data and a crash mean a loss of a great deal of data.

What you might like to try is this

BOOTABLE UBUNTU

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Set the BIOS to boot from theoptical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL> select TRYnot INSTALL

When it is finished - it takes verylittle time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open the drive you want > Userand dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy /paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doingthis.

I am not sure if it will but I haverecovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or j... Read more

Just bought this laptop secondhand and like it, a couple of issues though the mouse pad seems a little loose in that when doing a single click in the middle you have to knock it down a few times to register although this is intermittant the left and right click though are very positive.I can get around that with a usb mouse if its a norm for the acer. I was thinking of upgrading the ram as there is only 4gb in bit have seen you have to almost completely strip it down to do it. So if im going to do that I want to have a one fix. I downloaded CPU-Z to check out the memory and its DDR3 PC3-12800 Kingston part number ACR1603LS 1KFG/4G 1.35v also on the memory slot it says its 4gb in slot 1 - not 100% sure where slot 1 and 2 are though, if slot 1 is the hardest to get to i may just upgrade slot 2, i hope that the software is reading this right as 1 single stick rather than 2 sticks. The other info i have about the acer is according to CPU-Z the motherboard model is EA50_HB V1.27 and Bios is V1.27 dated 23/3/2015 although im not sure whether the Bios has been updated and that would change the date. My main question really is that is it likely that the ram will be one piece and if so whats the max i can fit in slot 2 or does it have to match? that would make the machine 8gb

Hello members. My internal WD hardware is not detected by my computer. When I boot my computer,it loads and asks me "Insert disk to boot from CD" and it hangs. And I went to bios too and it did not detect it either.Things I have tried: (0)Checked whether it is plugged in correctly.(1)Connected the hard drive to another computer and it only worked once. After I restarted it the Hard drive is not detected and my OS dose not load. Why I believe that it is not a problem of my original computer?I plugged in another Hard drive and it worked unlike the WD hardware. Why I believe that the WD hard drive is not dead?Because it worked on my other computer which had an OS installed but as I said, after I restarted, the my computer dose not load unless I unplug the WD hard drive and reboot again. Please help me fix this problem and it would be really appreciative and I need to fix the problem Urgently because I have 430GB of programs and documents in it.PS: I am looking for a mentor.

in all fairness, i have requested help with this problem at other sites as well. if i find a solution i promise to post it on all sites.

i just bought a brand new western digital WD5000AAKB caviar blue 500gb IDE/PATA hard drive from tiger direct. i have had success cloning smaller hard drives to 160gb hard drives with easeus disk copy, so i thought i would try to clone from my original HDD to this 500gb. i was able to clone the 160gb HDD's right out of the package without any preparation. i thought i would be able to do this with this 500gb as well, however, the results i get are strange. after making the master/slave connection and powering up, the 500gb never gets recognized in the bootup screen, or else the bootup screen stalls at the part where it detects the hard drives. i must admit that i am not really certain how to have the jumpers set on this 500gb. the master drive is no problem because i have pulled off this procedure before, cloning 40gb to 80gb. i have had the jumpers on the 500gb set at both cable select and slave. the HDD is brand new, so i could get my $ back, but i think i am making a mistake of some kind. i am very much a newbie at this, and i have just gotten lucky a few times with this "hobby". just trying to keep a backup of some cheap computer's data, in case. any expert help would be most appreciated.

Answer:New 500gb hard drive not recognized at bootup screen

I purchased almost a month ago a Seagate Barracuda 500GB (model number: ST3500630AS) hard drive for $178. I thought at the moment that it was a good deal. The same people from whom I bought it installed it for me. Some problems ensued with the drive: when I took it home I'd get the blue screen of death or its sister saying there's been a hardware malfunction and immediately shut down.

The next day I went to the store and used my guarantee and traded it in for an exact double yet virgin Seagate hard drive. This time I let them install Windows XP for me and everything seemed fine. The next day I was installing some programs when I realized that the computer was running too slow. How did I notice? I had Kaspersky Internet Security 7 running in the background as usual, as well as Diskeeper Pro Premier 2007 in the background and as a result of this the computer altogether would slow down for a few seconds. A more common situation was when I was wathcing a video while downloading on Azureus and every 20 minutes the video would start to jitter and then completely freeze for 5 seconds and then carry on as usual, oh and the audio would always have cracks and pops. All these would not happen if I didn't have Azureus or Diskeeper running. What conclusion did I get? My hard drive was working slow.

This was a nearly certain idea since everytime I'd move a file or folder to another location, Directory Opus' file copy window would tell me the speed at which the fi... Read more
