T440S brand new - instructions to replace and configure 512 GB vs 256GB - windows 8.1

Question: T440S brand new - instructions to replace and configure 512 GB vs 256GB - windows 8.1

Hi, thanks in advance for you help.I just acquire a new T440S with a SSD 256GB, the equipment will be arriving in two weeks. I try go buy it with a SSD 512 GB but it was not available. In the specifications sheet is indicated that the equipment can work with a 512 GB SSD however when allocating the order at Lenovo they told me that they only had available the option of 256GB SSD, that if want it to get a bigger SSD I must purchase it separate from another supplier and replaced.Equipment will came with windows 8.1 and office 2013 preinstalled. So as soon as I got the new T440S I want to replace the 256 GB SSD for a new one 512 GB SSD, so I have some questions. 1.- What specifications must comply the new 512 GB SSD in order to be compatible? 2.- To fisically change the disck is not a problem, but to configurate the equipment it is a problem for me. What I need to do, step by step?Due I need to configure the new equipment, generate de recovery dvds for all the software and drivers, then change the SSD and run a full recovery? For sure I am not going to receive disks neither with windows 8.1 and neither office 2013.How do you suggest me to do this? thanksJorge

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: T440S brand new - instructions to replace and configure 512 GB vs 256GB - windows 8.1

One advise- don't change drive by yourself. Read about broken bottom covers. It happend to me, and many other pepople even here on forum. 1. Almost every SSD will be good with T440s. (Remember to update your BIOS to the latest version). I had evo 840, evo 850, pro 850 and mx100, all worked good. Pro 850-> 10 years warranty, 2. Just use disks fromyour T440s package, works fine many times for me. As far as I know for 8.1 you will always get windows disk.

I just bought my T440s and loving it however, when i start to transfer my essential files from my old notebook to my new T440s, the 256GB SSD left with like 20GB of spare space left (lenovo recovery took up 14.7GB already). I am thinking of upgrading my SSD . Can anyone advise which SSD best recommended for this? thank you for reading my queston.

Answer:T440S: Which SSD to replace my default 256GB

I have multiple devices with Samsung Evo SSDs of various sizes and couldn't be happier. Also, if you think you ever want to restore your laptop to the factory state, then burn the recovery disk set from Q drive. Once you have the disks--it takes 4 DVDs-then let the Q drive remove itself and recover the disk space. You don't need almost 15GB of wasted space on an SSD.Once you've done that, then use a quality imaging app like Macrium Reflect to make regular images of your drive for the sake of restoring it, instead of going all the way back to factory state. Edit:  you can also use Macrium to image your existing SSD to the new one.  Samsung drives come with their own cloning tool, but it can sometimes muck up the System Reserved partition of Windows by leaving too little free space on it.  So, burn the DVDs, get rid of the recovery partition, reclaim the space, then image the current drive to a new one.

Hi, I have a month old T440s. It has the original 256GB SSD drive (didn't open\replace anything). After uninstalling some antivirus software win8 had problems booting. To make a long story short, I tried different things to fix the MBR and eventually got to the point of trying to do a full factory restore, which didn't work (it couldn't find the recovery partition). When I boot up now, I get the "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" error.Aside from trying to restore using Lenovo CD (shipped to me, will be here in a couple of days), what else cn be done and what caused this ordeal? I don't mind about the data on the SSD, I just really need my laptop functioning ASAP. Thanks for any advise you may have!

I'm installing windows 7 from a USB key, which does boot and 'Start' the install. My problem is the windows 7 installation doesn't see a HDD to install on.I get a 'Load Driver' dialog box that says "a required CD / DVD Drive device driver is missing.  If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB Flash Drive, please insert now." "Note: if the windows installation media is in the CD / DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step." When I hit browse I see the Windows 8 OS (came preloaded) and a boot drive.  Neither of which are my USB Key.Anyone getting this or know how to fix it? Thanks

Answer:Install Windows 7 on T440s with 256gb SSD

Hello and welcome,

That "...CD/DVD..." message is often misleading.  It can mean that there's an install media problem: bad flash drive, bad ISO download, bad ISO to flash transfer.  It can also happen when installing from a USB 3.0 port on some machines.

Does a T440s have a USB 2.0 port?  If so try that one.  Or just try another USB port.

Hello to all. I've an issue with my T440s. I recently bought a ZTC 256GB M2 SSD online whcih I've installed successfully but I can't seem to be able to format the **bleep** thing and I thought it was faulty but after replacing it with a new one, it seems the SSD is alright.I can see the SSD in the BIOS and in Disk Manager but when I try and format the disk, it sits there for a while and fails to format it. The disk then disappears from Disk Manager or Device manager until the system is rebooted. I also tried via diskpart to do a clean on the disk and the same occurs. I've also tried 3rd party tools using Acronis Disk director and True Image and I can't seem to do anything on the disk. I can partition the disk but I can't format it or even clone to it.I looked in the BIOS and there doesn't seem to be anything obvious. I need your help on this one as I've been scratching my head for quite a while Anyone experienced this in the past ? Is this something wrong with my laptop ?Thanks for your advicesRegardsGaetan

Answer:T440s and ZTC M2 NGFF 256GB SSD issue

Plugged the M2 SSD into a brand new T450s and it's not detected so it's either an issue with ZTC or LENOVO. It's the 2nd SSD I try so I doubt the drive is faulty but simply incompatible

I am trying to placing this order... 20AQCTO1WW ThinkPad T440s Which comes with... "256GB SSD eDrive" But, lenovo seem to be trying to keep the details of this drive 'secret'.    Does anyone know the manufacturer/model name for this secret drive?   I talked to sales support, they did not know and told me to call tech support.   I called tech support but they told me to call sales.  So, talked to sales again , and they said it is an intel pro 1500.  But, then I found this website... http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/t440s_fru_bom_20131014.pdf  And, this says the edrive is either samsung or liteon.  I am so confused now. The lenovo sales people were saying the model doesn't matter because SSD's are faster then mechanical drives.

Answer:T440s - what is the 256gb SSD edrive model?

Hi wreck1080, I guess it would depend on the stock they have at the moment your order your machine. It could be one of the 3 drives. I don't think it's too much of an issue as you will anyway end with a 256GB SDD eDrive. They don't provide the manufacturer of the RAM modules or the motherboard either. Vince.

I have my T440s for about one year, doubling it as both my work and home machine. The original samsung PM851 256GB SSD just sudden went undetectable, without any sympton or SMART warning. The laptop BIOS no longer detects it. This happened just two days after I upgraded my Win 8.1 to Win 10. (I first did the upgrade and then a clean install of Win 10.) I don't think it was Win 10's problem, but the two installations may have added just enough wear to fail the SSD. What surprised me is that the death came off without any warning. I wonder if anyone here has the same (terrible) experience. Just a kind reminder to back up your data frequently if you have one such SSD.

Answer:Sudden death of Samsung 256GB SSD in T440s just two days after Win 10 upgrade

Backups are very important with both SSDs and platter-based drives.  Overall, I have found SSDs very reliable, but in my experience, traditional drives are more likely to fail slowly, where you get some bad sectors.  You can still retrieve most of your data.  When an SSD fails, it may fail suddenly and catastrophically; everything is gone.

Hi,I am considering adding a 2nd SSD drive to run Windows from mainly because I seem to be running out of room at an alarming rate and assume its due to temp files or video temp files as I film a fair bit of video clogging up the space.I am thinking of the Samsung 750 EVO 250 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive . I wanted to first ask is this possible or is there only room for one SSD and therefore I would need to replace the current 128gb?I have created the recovery Media on a USB drive and assume all I need to do if its a straight swap is disconnet the current 128gb drive and then add the new drive? Any tips or advice or warnings doing this?If its possible to add a 2nd SSD drive then I assume I could use the Samsung Migration software which I believe comes with the new SSD drive and then copy over the entire drives contents onto the new drive? Again any tips or advice much appreciated? Many thanks for your help

I have a Precision 3510 with an M.2 256GB gumstick drive, which is not nearly enough capacity for what we need. I would like to either add a second drive, or take out the M.2, but I cannot seem to track down the part numbers for the cable and/or bracket needed to install an HDD. I know that it can come from the factory with an HDD instead, but Dell never seems to have the parts in stock, and therefore will not tell me the part numbers.

My Y510P had a 1TB 5400+24GB Cache SSD. I bought a MyDigital SSD m.2 256GB to replace the 24GB m.2 cache ssd on my laptop. I have previously reformatted both of the drives and cleared all of the original lenovo installation including the partition with their recovery software. I purchased a new version of Windows 8.1 and that is what I have installed on the 1TB HDD presently.I was able to replace the ssd successfully. the new 256GB device is recognized in the BIOs. I have it on UEFI boot and have secure boot disabled. I have also uninstalled the SuperCache software and also uninstalled the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver that was set as the driver for the HDD, in its place i installed the Standard SATA AHCI Controller driver and restarted. I set the DVD drive to be first in the boot order and put my windows 8.1 64-bit disc into the drive. The setup begins and before i even get to the drive selection screen i still recieve an error stating that a recently installed media has a missing driver, and it gives me the option to search for the driver.. i got this error before i uninstalled the SATA Driver as well. Really going crazy trying to get this Win 8.1 installation onto the SSD. I am unable to bypass this error in the 8.1 set up so that i can do a fresh install on my ssd. I want to use the 256GB ssd to install windows and boot from and use the 1tb as purely storage. Any help is appreciated.

Hello NZ and welcome - no mate if you have the original sticker - activation code you just follow the tutorial and put it on a stick and install and use that activation code.

FIRST It's an idea to set the SSD up properly and for that you might need to DISKPART it as per the tutorial
SSD Alignment
- do that using the machine you are taking out the drive on and then as I said follow the tutorial you are in.

Take your time it isn't hard

Let us know how you get on.

I have a 4 yr old T41 2369 DKU and the LCD went dim about 3 months ago. While you can not see it unless you strain you eyes or go get a flashlight, I can remote desktop into it and operate it just fine. I just purchased a replacement LCD (complete enclosed monitor with hinges and interface cable. I have tried to download the service manual or the whole user manual, but the ftp from lenovo's website is not letting me get the file. I tried on 2 pc's at work yesterday and 2 different pc's at home and the same behavior occurs on multiple manuals on either IE or Firefox. Does anyone know how to do this or how to easily get the required manual for a LCD replace/swap? do I need to take apart the screen side (and since I have the complete assembly, I'm assuming not) or just the bottom where I'll screw the hinges back into the PC and reconnect the antenna and monitor cable?

Answer:Brand New T440s with BIOS password

Indeed, it may happen. Sometimes large customers request preconfigured laptops which may include customized supervisor passwords. Of course, you should have not received one of these units. Ask the seller for a replacement unit, as there is no easy way to remove an unknown supervisor password without replacing the laptop mainboard.

Hi,

I messed up my original keyboard by flooding with water and then by hairdrying it to the point where a couple keys melted.
I know it is a stupid thing to do. But, what can I say ....

I attempted to ask an official technical center to fix it, only a few keys were not responding. Everything else works fine.
Without really looking in detail, they wanted to change the whole motherboard and a number of other parts for a price nearing that of the laptop itself.

So I bought a new keyboard on eBay. However, I am lacking instructions on how to replace it.
On the net, I found instructions for older Portege versions and couldn't find any for the M800.
Can anyone, please, help ?

Cheers,

/Numidic

Answer:Instructions on how to replace a keyboard on a Portege M800

Hi

I think you will not find detailed instructions how to disassemble a Portege M800. All what you can download is the user manual and technical manuals are not for public, I think they are only available for ASP?s.

Anyway, as far as I know you have to remove the keyboard holder and two screws they are securing the keyboard. Then you can remove it.

But to be honest I would recommend contacting a notebook technician for help. Notebook disassembling isn?t easy, it?s a little bit tricky and you have to remove a lot of screws. So you are on the safely side because M800 is pretty new notebook. ;)

The instructions provided by HP are poor.   The youtube videos I have quickly searched don't follow the instructions provided. Some actually make things more complicated and have you remove the entire rear cover of the laptop. Other videos have very poor imagg quality or jerkiness that it is impossible to follow. I am very frustrated right now because an HP poster said this was an easy task to do. I beg to differ. I have built PC's before and replacing this keyboard is anything but easy unless you're an HP engineer.

I have searched all over the web to find a guide on how to replace the wifi adapter or at least which screws to remove before lifting the keyboard out. I presume that the wifi adapter sits underneath the keyboard and is accessible by removing the keyboard .

Case is that I wuld like to use widi and therefore I need to replace the atheros adapter with an intel one.

I will probably end up doing this even with out instructions. So any help would be greatly appreciated so as to avoid any damage to this wonderfull machine.

Further I could use tips on wireing should I stick to a two antenna card, and is the card interchangeable as to existing wireing. I don't know maybe one of the antenneas is in support of blutooth functionality. WIll it be okay just to attach the antennas to the new wifi 'only' card in their current configuration.

Best,
Jesper

Answer:Re: Satellite P750 - need instructions how to access and replace Wi-Fi adapter

Hi

This Satellite model is new one and I presume the warranty is still valid. Is this correct?
I presume you know that such action will cancel warranty.

Maintenance manual is not a public document; therefore you will not be able to find it for download.
> I will probably end up doing this even with out instructions.
That?s very bad idea. Without step by step instructions you can damage something, break some small plastic holder or damage some connector. Problem is that such small plastic parts cannot be ordered anywhere.

I don?t know if you have checked card compatibility with notebook?s hardware platform but maybe you should contact nearest Toshiba service and pick up some information before you do anything.

Hi, I just bought a brand new Thinkpad L540 as well as a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB. I am not skilled in these sort of things, but hopefully upgrading to the SSD will be doable. The thinkpad comes with Windows 7 Professional, but with Windows 8 Pro as recovery OS.  Should I just replace the HDD with the SSD before I ever start the computer, and then start the computer after the swap. Will everything launch as normal then, and is it best to just install windows 8 immediately, or install W7 first, and then install W8 as recovery OS afterwards?  Or should I first install windows 7 and then clone unto the SSD, to avoid missing any important drivers etc.? What are the biggest errors to avoid? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Replace HDD with SSD on brand new L540

Welcome to the forum!

I'd suggest creating recovery disks from the existing install - that option will be visible under Control Panel - then removing the hard drive and doing a fresh install on the SSD from these recovery disks.

Good luck.

Well one thing I think you might be "missing" is that your hardware is just fine and it's your Operating System that is trashed and needs replacing (aka reinstallation). And if you do have bad hardware, the Power Supply would be the first component I would look at. A bad PSU can cause all manner of symptoms due to data corruption, and manufacturers use the lowest quality parts they can get away with.

Hey guys i have a question i have a Philips LCD PC Monitor where the board is fried its a 23 inch,
I also have a Samsung 19 inch same year but only 19 inch but all the wiring color codes are a exact match.
Can i use my 23 inch with the Samsung, or will it fry my board.
I can imagine some issues, I SHOULD NOT USE THE BUTTONS ON THE OLD SAMSUNG SCREEN because they do different things , they have 3 things in common wiring colorcodes are a perfect match power button and the "auto feature BUT not located the same place on the side of screen only the power button match" so i should prob not use the auto features or menu because even though both screens have that feature, my guess is that because they are not in the same place it might send the wrong signal
My Samsung has

Phillips
Power up menu down turbo auto buttons on the side.
But i really just need the power button everything else Windows controls

I recently bought a computer, less then 2 months ago, brand new. As of today, it gave me a red x on my battery icon stating my computer might shut down unexpectedly and that i should consider replacing... I had this problem with my old computer, but after 2 years of so making me think that this isn't right... Both my computers were and are Acer, but the model of this one is Aspire 5750. I'm not sure weather my computer is under warranty, i will have to look into that but for now, i would like to try and figure this out before i have to spend a lot of money on a new battery, thanks!

Hi I just bought a the new y400 with windows 8, 1Tb hdd.  I want to install a 256Gb sdd.  I used EaseUS Todo Backup to clone the entire drive to a 1Tb usb drive.  then I decreased the main partition C: so it would all fit onto the 256Gb sdd.  I then cloned the entire usb drive to the sdd.   I didn't want to mess with the original drive.   I tried booting from the sdd and it didn't work.  And when I tried booting from the usb drive it went into repair mode.  I couldn't restore or reset the system or repair it.   Why doesn't the computer recognize either drive? I'm familiar with computers but I'm no computer genius.   Thanks for any help!

Hi Folks, Had a bad T440s that is about to go back. However, under the exact same circumstances and software, the battery on the old machine would last 7 hours.  The battery on the new machine lasts only 2 to 2.5 hours. Anyone else out there experience this problem.? My setup is exactly the same as the previous machine.  The only difference when I ran some software to get statistics is that the battery in the old one was a sony and the battery in the new one is a Sanyo.  The external battery is the same. I've done my checks and there are no issues with the batteries. I've done everything I can. Eliminated processes, services and disabled devices and programs from startup, power profiles.  We are talking a bare work/surf/email machine with very little video usage.  Stlil having the wifi issue too. Lenovo wants to send a tech over or have me ship it to L2 since it is a new machine however I know this will result in a motherboard replacement, (which will result in a new machine anyway which I have asked for) unless the screen has something to do with it.  Other than that surveillance hardware/software tends to draw a lot of power. At this point I need a fully functioning machine hence my reluctance to ship it off and too much life stuff going on to get someone over. Anyone know of another useful battery tool outside of the Battery Eater Pro etc that let's you know where the power is going? I have found a few references on th... Hi, Obviously not able to open these critters up. I have a new T440s that I would like to transfer my programs and data to.  Is there a program out there that can do this without having to pull out the hard drive to image? My current one has Windows 8.1. The new one has Windows 7 with the Windows 8.1 recovery discs.  Issue is, I believe that the Windows license is tied to the hardware?  Therefore I would have to make a recovery disc set of Windows 7.....then use the Windows 8.1 recovery discs then move my programs and data over.  Windows Easy Transfer does not look like it can do the best job. I thought about bringing it to the store for them to swap the drives but then worried alot about the whole licensing issue.  (not to mention the possible loss of my warranty) Unless if it is done professional and the license could be stripped out of the existing drive and new drive moved to new machine....perhaps a way to get the license keys from the new system somehow. Thanks in advance.

Answer:T440S to T440s - program and data transfer, OS licensing issue

Hello.

If you look at the bottom of the machines, and they both have the Windows 8 sticker, your machines are licenced and the product key is embedded in the BIOS.

You can use this program: ProduKey to view and write down your keys, but if you use either the Recovery disks or a WIndows 8 Pro retail DVD to reinstall Windows, your key will be picked up automatically by the installation.

For migration of your files, programs and settings, you could simply clone your current WIndows 8.1 installation onto the new drive using, assuming your installation is UEFI and thus your HD is GPT partitioned, Macrium Reflect, which many users here have had a good experience with. That would save you time from having to reinstall Windows on the new machine as well and all you'd have to do is to enter the embedded Windows key of your new machine to activate it.

Macrium Reflect

That's at least one suggestion, but there are many ways to go about this.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

So we have a Windows 7 install for the SM871 that works fine.  When we upgrade the P50 to the new 512GB the Windows 7 SP1 install media sees the drive, but when you attempt to install windows to it, it states that you cannot install Windows on Disk 0 Partition 1 (delete, new) just keeps saying the same thing. The details talk about Disc Controller and Hardware may not support booting from this device.  The 512GB is a Lenovo part (FRU 00JT074).  I've tried the Lenovo drivers, Samsung NVMe drivers, and even HP's all injected plus the F6 method and nothing will let me install to this drive. Anybody know of a driver that will work or is this SSD not compatible (MZVKV512HAJH-000L1)?

Answer:P50 and 256GB SM871 to 512GB SM951a - No Windows Install

I think I've seen this before as to what you're referring to.  Are you attempting to install Windows 7 in GPT or MBR mode? Typically, NVMe drives won't install Windows 7 in MBR mode.  You'll likely need to make sure you're installing Windows 7 in EFI/GPT mode.  To do so, whenever you boot to your Windows 7 installation media, make sure you select the UEFI boot option as opposed to selecting the Legacy boot option.

I just unpacked my custom build and got it turned on.. went to try and get the internet working, and for the life of me.. i can't figure it out.
I don't even have a little wireless bar down in the right hand corner. when i try to connect to a network in network and sharing center, it wants me to plug in an ethernet cable. But i want wireless.. Also in the side panel of Network and sharing center, i don't even have the option for wireless.. i have Change adapter settings, and Change advanced sharing settings.

I try to set up a new connection or network and Connect to the internet, the only way it asks me to connect is by broadband(PPPoE). If i try set up a new network it asks me to choose the wireless router or access point i want to configure, might take up to 90 seconds for networks to appear.. but nothing pops up.
Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Brand new computer, Brand new windows 7.. no wireless?

In Device Manager, Network Adapters, is your wireless shown?

If yes, is the driver installed? If no, is it enabled in BIOS?

Hello,my t440s will turn off, when i push against the bottom cover near the connector of the battery. Lifting the thinkpad with one hand is sometimes enough to turn it off. I think it's a connection problem between the external battery and the notebook. -the problem only exists if the external battery is connected-the problem will not appear if i press the battery release button during pressing against the bottom cover. To reproduce the problem:-insert external battery-boot computer, wait until windows is started-press against the bottom cover -> the laptop goes off Without the bottom cover i can reproduce the problem (the battery is not locked without the cover):-if i remove the battery without activating the small switch near the release pusher, the laptop goes off-if i remove the battery while activating the small switch near the release pusher, the laptop stays on. I think, when i push against the bottom cover, the battery looses the connection. On my T440s the connector seems to be very deep. It does not really fit into the battery. Does anybody have the same problem? Can anybody with a t440s look at the battery connector: Is the connector properly aligned, or is it on a different height?  Push at the red position: http://i59.tinypic.com/25006c0.jpgConnector: http://i60.tinypic.com/qzncao.jpg Thanks for your helpAndi

Answer:Windows Bootup time Severely Slow [Crucial M4 256GB]

Welcome to SevenForums!

You can improve some boot times by:

Making sure that your not booting with a ton of applications on startup. (You will need to use MSCONFIG to disable startup services).
Startup Programs - Change

Ensure that Prefetch, Superfetch are not enabled (There is no need for these services on an SSD).
SuperFetch - Change Prefetch Data to be Cached

Else, make sure that your SSD is set as the primary boot device within the EUFI/BIOS as you may have a time delay if its set to boot from CD / Network PxE or raid device.

Hello.
I have an Acer Aspire AS3810TZ-4806 and have owned it for a good 4-5 years. I've had some LCD issues for a couple years now where the light flickers, have big black spots and FINALLY the screen gave out. it's almost completly dark now. You can faintly see images. After some research on replacement, a compatible Acer LCD on Ebay would run roughly $60. I've concluded that It's either the bulb inside (CCFL??) or the inverter that may have an issue, but I have no way of testing which is broken since I have no spare LCD screen to test or a little tester device.

What I've discovered was my lcd screen's model # was : B133XW01 V2 . After googling this model # and a search on Ebay, I've discovered a Dell Latitude 13 or a couple other Dell brands share this same model, the difference is it says " V1." Im assuming version 1 or something, and the one I have is V2. The connectors look the same. I feel like it might work. What do you think? Below are a couple Ebay links im looking at, Does that "H/W" code matter?
Any advice?

I have been having intermittent problems at boot for a while now. Some time ago, I replaced the 32GB SSD with a Samsung EVO850 256GB, and clean installed Win 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 on separate partitions. At  startup, boot selectable from Grub menu.Windows was fine, but after a while, Ubuntu started having problems at boot, with either a hanging pink screen that required a hard reboot, or a linux kernal / terminal screen that rolled off a long list of diagnostics. If I turned off and attempted to boot Ubuntu a few times, it eventually loaded. Once the OS loaded, there was no problem until the next reboot.I decided that I'd need to re-install Ubuntu, and deferred it for a period. Subsequently, I had the equivalent problem with Windows, which required a "repair". The repair did not succeed, and finally neither system would boot, no matter how many attempts. It appears that Windows somehow invalidated itself once the "repair" processing was initiated.I retained the original 32GB SSD, which had my previous Ubuntu installation on it. I also have the original Windows 10 installation on the hard drive in its own system partition...data separate. Prior to upgrading the SSD, if I removed the SSD, it would boot straight into windows without 1st booting Grub. Once both OSes were installed on the 256GB SSD, it seems that UEFI configured the hard drive OS as "non-bootable". After reverting to the original configuration, I could not boot either system. I... Some of the solutions I tried (and did not work) are: Reinstalling Lenovo Power ManagerUninstalling  Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method BatteryRemoving the battery and putting it back in  As it stands, the battery menu says "Plugged in, not charging" and is stuck at 84%.  If anyone could give me other ideas, I would greatly appreciate it. I am assuming it's not a hardware issue as the battery is brand new and was working just fine a few days ago.

Answer:Brand New T430s: A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery.

Not sure if there's any known quirks with that combination of hardware and software, but it sounds to me like the battery had a spontaneous failure, in which case you should just get it replaced under warranty.

Okay, so i was planning to upgrade my laptop once more. and this is the specs

My Laptop Spec: HP Pavillion ze5700 (UPGRADED)

OS: Windows XP SP3 32-bit.
Processor: Intel Celeron 2.8ghz (Which in DXDIAG states: Equivalent to M-PIV 1.4ghz)
RAM: 705mb
Video Card: ATi RADEON IGP 354m

Is there any Video Card, Processor, and RAM Slot that is Available? and that is CHEAP but has the power to play games in 2004-2008 range, or maybe. Record gameplays with DXtory?

Answer:Cheap Video Card replace/Processor replace/RAM replace

You can't upgrade the video card. Any upgrades to the CPU are slight.

I can not find any information on it, on what the RAM speed and limit is. It should say in the manual, which I can't find as well.

Hotmail is really a easy account. I used it for years. Mostly only with important or trusted sites. Very little spam if you use the account wisely. Create a nickname account with little real inforamtion. They don't ask for any verification. It can be used to get you into several communities worth the effort. Also there is WinVista forums Win7 forums so I would figure there is Win8 forums.

So they are running windows 7 pro, but come with the windows 8 pro sticker.Being that there was no actual key to see, i used a key finder to find the current license key that windows 7 was using to be authenticated with, in the case of an event happening to the laptop and we needed to reinstall windows 7 for the user. A few months down the line, an issue occurred where the laptop would not wake from sleep (common error apparently) and before we attempeted to fix it, windows would no longer boot, tried many different methods of repairing this, but failed. Our laptops are all encrypted also so this made it 10x harder. So I ran our standard win 7 pro installation from a usb on this Lenovo T440s. Configured all our programs and settings, went to activate windows 7 with the same license key and it would not accept it, come up with the microsoft error 0xC004E003. I won't post the key here for obvious reasons. The laptop did come with Win8 recovery discs but I don't fully understand how we can get this laptop back onto a legitimate Windows 7 install. I've looked up how to downgrade and it all seems a bit odd. Can someone clarify this for me please?Regards, Max.

Answer:Preinstalled Windows 7 on T440s, had to wipe HDD, reinstall windows 7, key not accepted? Why?

Activating a downgrade is very odd:  Understanding downgrade rights

Lenovo install media should activate automatically but for any other install source you need to use an existing already-in-use key.  That will fail... then you call Microsoft.  That or sacrifice a new key

I've only tried this once.  In that case I used a Lenovo OEM key - from the sticker on a laptop, not an extracted key - and it activated on its own.  Not sure why that worked but it's something you might try.

Hello I want to purchase a T440s with windows 7.On the webpage it lists 2 options:   Windows 7 ProfessionalWindows 7 Profressional pre-installed If I get the first option, does that mean the laptop comes with windows 8 installedand I get media to install windows 7 ? If I get it with windows 7 pre-installed, do I get media or a license to install windows 8if I change my mind? Thank you

Answer:Purchasing T440s: Windows 7

Hello and welcome,

I think the full quote is "Windows 7 Professional 64 preinstalled through downgrade rights in Windows 8.1 Pro 64"

I haven't had personal experience with this so please double-check, but I believe that the "Windows 7" option is the classic setup: Windows 7 installed and Windows 7 CoA sticker.  The "downgrade" situation is a laptop licensed for Windows 8 (key embedded in the firmware) but Windows 7 installed.

In practice there won't be any real difference to the user unless you want to do a clean install.  In the former case, you have a usable CoA key.  In the latter, a somewhat complicated activation procedure will be required:

Understanding downgrade rights

I believe in the "downgrade" case installing and activating Win 8 will remain an option - but again I haven't verified myself.

I bought the t440s with windows 8 pro, removed it and installed 'ubuntu', do I still have a licence and how can i reinstall windows 8?

Answer:T440s windows 8 pro reinstall

Hello.

The Windows 8 Pro product key is embedded in the machines BIOS, so yes, you always have the licence. The simplest way to re-install is either to use the Recovery DVD's from Lenovo, or if you have a Windows 8 Pro retail DVD, you can use that too. If you plan on re-installing Win8 in UEFI mode, you can just copy the contents of the retail DVD onto a Fat32 formatted USB key and boot from it. Just remember to turn Secure Boot off while you install.

Hope this helps, just chime back if you have further questions.

Cheers!

Hello I've got T440s (20AQ004URT) and I want to connect it to my Sony Bravia TV (Miracast certified) wirelessly.I've made clean Windows 10 installation. At this point WiDi connection works 8 times out of 10. Then, Windows automatically installs necessary drivers (for touchpad, graphics, etc.). At this point I could hardly get WiDi working, it starts to connect to my TV and then just fails. So, I went to Intel forum and found out that I should install latest drivers from Intel (graphics, networking and Intel WiDi Pro software). I have installed all that stuff, but nothing changed. My hardware seems to be compatible with Intel WiDi Pro, as I could install necessary software. Also, my antivirus/firewall is disabled. But I still can't get WiDi working - laptop sees my TV, it starts to connect, my TV shows connection, but then it fails.  Please, help me resolve this issue.

I printed, read, and followed your "Read & Run Me First" guide exactly. When my browser continued to open windows on it's own, I decided to follow your "No HijackThis Log Files Until You Read This" thread, which I did, to the tee. I then had my log analysed by "HijackThis Analyser" which is listed in your
"Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis" guide. It said there were a couple of malware items in my log and told me to get rid of them, which I did with HijackThis, however, unfortunately my problem still exists.

I'd appreciate any assistance I can get. My log file is attached.

Thank you

No you did not follow it to a tee. The very first paragraph says the below:

Notes! Special notes for posting your Hijack This log file on MajorGeeks.Com. Notice that it points you back to the READ & RUN ME FIRST! You must follow those steps.

Most people are under the very mistaken misconception that HijackThis is a scanning/removal tool. It is not! HijackThis is simply a tool that is used to identify browser hijackers and in some cases it will show entries for some malware that is for instance running at startup. All it does is list a few of the thousands of registry keys that exist, and it makes no inferences to whether anything being shown is good or bad. That decision is left a person with significant Windows and malware cleaning experience. HijackThis does not come close to showing all malware that could be hiding on a PC. Answer:T440s windows 8.1 serial number

Good day and welcome to the community.

The first recommendation is to create recovery media from inside the original OEM install, before doing any major drive reconfiguration.

Your Win8x license key is embedded in your UEFI/BIOS. You should be able to "clean" install the same version (std for std, or, pro for pro) and have the key picked up automatically.

Hope this helps.

Hi,  I try to install Windows 7 on my T440s. However, I fail booting the USB stick with error code 0xc000000d ("An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data"). I created the USB stick as described in the Forum here (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-in...). Also, the USB-Stick boots fine in UEFI mode on my old (HP) Laptop. Also I can boot on CSM-Mode Compatibility Support Module. I tried several other how-tos and what else Google answered search fo that error code (e.g. disabling USB3, disable nearly everything the UEFI BIOS could disable etc...). It really seems to be an issue in conjunction with that UEFI implementation... I'm using latest UEFI BIOS (GJET64WW, 2.14). Anyone successfully installed Windows 7 on that model? Hi, I bought a T440s and am trying to install Win 8 in UEFI mode. I have an original Win 8 DVD (system builder) and tried it via USB as well. My problem: There's no UEFI DVD/USB option in the boot menu (F12) - only DVD/USB without UEFI. However if I put the DVD/USB in my friends MacBook Pro the EFI option is shown. So the problem is probably the T440s. I tried a lot of different settings in the BIOS: UEFI only/bothCSM enabled/disabledSecure Boot on/offQuick Boot on/off Furthermorem, the T440s is equipped with a 500 GB Samsung EVO SSD. MBR/GPT should not be the problem, since it should still show the UEFI option in the boot menu even if the SSD would be partitioned in MBR.What am I doing wrong?

Answer:T440s UEFI install Windows 8

Well, in BIOS you should set to Boot UEFI Only. Then it doesnt matter, what is in F12 menu, because it will each time boot ONLY in UEFI mode. So if you set in BIOS UEFI Only, are you able to boot from DVD or not? If not, i would prefer to make USB disk bootable in UEFI (GPT), this will work for sure, if you make it correctly.

I've spent a few days trying to get round this issue but to no avail. I reverted back to the factory reset which restored Windows 8 back to its initial state.  In doing so the graphics adaptors lost their drivers and a few other devices were also missing drivers, namely the built in NIC and Chipset drivers.   I found this strange as i would have expected the factory reset to restore back to Lenovo's "factory shipped" given that all the Lenovo apps remain installed. Both graphics adaptors were using the Windows Basic Graphics adaptor upon boot up.   Trying to use the hot keys to adjust the brightness was not working and it seemed like the display was on 100% brightness (even without the power plugged in).  On screen you could see the brightness indicator changing but no difference in the actual contrast..  FYI there is a built in Intel HD adaptor and Nvidea adaptor for external monitor use. If i remove the Intel installed driver and revert back to Windows Basic i can use the toggle keys (F5/F6)  albeit the contrast doesnt actually change but the indicators do appear.  If reinstall the Intel driver i lose the toggle keys and still the brightness remains on 100%. I've used the latest drivers from Lenovo's site and even resorted to using the latest driver from the Intel website.  All without success.   Has anybody else expereinced this problem.   I appreciate the non-dockable version of the ... i've got a T440s that was upgraded to windows 10 about 6 months ago. after installing a new brother printer yesterday, the machine won't boot any more; it just goes directly to automatic repair, then diagnostics, neither of which help. i tried several system restore points, but sr always fails telling me it can't copy the registry. i ran the lenovo hardware diagnostics which fails in the targeted read test of the hard drive with bad sectors. i am backing up all the data (which is on the solid-state drive ?) manually from the cli prompt (that still works) before i do anything else. next planned step is to run the bad sectors tool). i'm wondering if the bad sectors are where the registry (or its backup) is stored, and if so, then will "fixing" the bad sectors destroy the registry to the point where i need to do a refresh. this is the first time i've dealt with a system with a hybrid drive (ssd for start-up & os, hd for storage. since it was originally a windows 8.1 machine will running the refresh put back windows 10, and if so, will it know where to write the refreshed os files to the ssd and hd? all suggestions appreciated.

I have the exact same issue.  Lenovo don't seem to offer an 8.1 driver for this card and nothing appears to exist out there for it.  Windows Update, SlimDrivers, Realtek site....all come up with nothing.  I really don't want to go back to w8 but doesn't appear to be an alternative.  This is a new laptop delivered yesterday and I am cursing myself for opting for the Lenovo wifi card as opposed to Intel which does offer an 8.1 driver. Be grateful for a driver that works or at the very least a date when we can expect a driver compatible with 8.1.

Answer:Information or instructions for dual Nic's On Windows 8.

You can play around with this all you want but there is NO way the Homegroup will follow as you change between the two different networks, the workgroup may keep up, yes I've tried this before.

I need instructions for using Windows 7. I want to copy data files, folders, and pictures from a CD to my new computer, something that was easy to do in my old Windows XP, but I don't know the process. I could use some help. Many thanks!

Answer:Need instructions on how to copy data from CD to my new Windows 7

It's exactly the same - open an Explorer window to see the files, select on or multiples using Ctrl-click, Ctrl-A, Shift-click, etc., then drag-and-drop them from the CD to wherever you want them to end up.

error messaging starting windows meTo resolve this issue, perform the following steps: 1. Insert the Windows Me Startup disk and restart your computer. If a Windows Me Startup disk did not come with your computer, view the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to learn how to create one:267287 (click here) How to Create a Startup Disk in Windows Me 2. On the Startup menu, click Start computer with CD-ROM support. 3. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command, where windows is the name of your Windows folder:c:cd windows\systemren user32.dll user32.dlxren gdi32.dll gdi32.dlxren winmm.dll winmm.dlxa:smartdrv.exeext.exe 4. When you are prompted "Please enter the path to the Windows CAB files," type cd-rom:\win9x, where cd-rom is the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive, and then press ENTER. This letter may be different when you are using a Startup disk. NOTE: Some OEM installations of Windows Me may have the cabinet files stored on your hard disk. The default location of these cabinet files is C:\Windows\Options\Install and you can type this path when you are prompted "Please enter the path to the Windows CAB files". However, if your cabinet files are not in this location, and you do not have a Windows Me CD-ROM, contact your hardware manufacturer to locate the files. 5. When the prompt appears "Please enter the name(s) of the files you want to extract," type user32.dll gdi32.dll winmm.dll, and then press ENTER. 6. When the "Please enter the path to extra... The Microsoft Engineering team has outlined how Windows 7 Beta users can upgrade their version of Windows 7 to the soon to be released Release Candidate of Windows 7. The disappointing news is that Microsoft suggests to do a clean install instead as the development changes introduced after the release of the beta of Windows 7 were not always compatible with the upgrades made thereafter.
A clean install on the other hand would mean that all the changes and customizations made to the operating system by the user would be lost. This is a nuisance although everyone knew beforehand that this could happen eventually. Microsoft is suggesting to do a clean install or upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

The RC, however, is about getting breadth coverage to validate the product in real-world scenarios. As a result, we want to encourage you to revert to a Vista image and upgrade or to do a clean install, rather than upgrade the existing Beta.

The Windows 7 release candidate setup will quit automatically if it recognizes a pre-RC build on the computer system. Microsoft did however publish a workaround for that for users who really need to do it:
1. Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
3. Browse to the sources directory.
4. Open the file cve... Read more

I got a bad case of the Windows XP Recovery virus and could see nothing but the phony console. I followed the bleepingcomputer instructions at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-xp-recovery exactly -- RKill, then TDSSKiller, then MBAM,then finally Unhide, running everything from a thumb drive. I have not yet run Secunia PSI. TDSSKiller found nothing, and MBAM found and removed a bunch of infected file. Logs for RKill, TDSSKiller, and MBAM are copied below.Although this seems to have solved most of the problem, most of the simple programs links and all the program links in program folders in my start menu remain missing. So are all the program shortcuts on my desktop. The programs themselves -- the few that I have checked -- seem to be still in place, and I can start them by double-clicking their .exe files in the Program Files directory. Is there any way to get them back? There are dozens of them. Are the program links on the Start menu just shortcuts (with icons in some cases)? Was there perhaps some failure in unhiding shortcuts?Oh, one more curious thing. The only programs that remained on the Start menu were Notepad and MS Internet Explorer. Explorer says all of its add-ons are disabled, though if you click on the bar to manage add-ons, they say that they are enabled.Subsequently to the above, a ran a full scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. It found and removed three copie of Alureon.SMy operating system is Windows XP with SP3.Any help yo... Read more

I'm thinking of taking advantage of the T410 sales and get a 128MB SSD as part of the configuration. 1) What's the brand of 128MB SSD used in the current T410 builds? (searching found Samsung SSDs are commonly used in the T410 builds -- that still true)? 2) Do the latest SSDs being used support TRIM? 3) With the current sales, you can get a i7-620m with a 128MB SSD for only $100 more than a i5-560m with a 250GB spindle drive. Seems that the i7 and SSD is the obvious choice. Will battery life be the same with the i7 configuration compared to the i5? I know both are dual-cores that run at basically the same clock speeds, and the i7 has more cache.

Answer:Brand New T410 - Current 128MB SSD Brand and TRIM Support? Also i7-620m vs i5-560m?

1.) The brand of 128GB SSD in the current T410 builds is either that of Samsung, Toshiba, or Intel. All of these brands use different controllers (AFAIK). I believe it's also more 'luck-of-the-draw' than anything when you get the T410: an interesting choice since all 3 makes of drive have different speeds due to the different controllers (and they aren't the fastest controllers on the market by any stretch though I believe that all 3 offer similar performance).2.) Yes, they should (as these controllers do).3.) Battery life will be exactly the same. The only thing about the i5 vs. the i7 is that the i7 has a bigger turbo boost than the i5 (which doesn't really kick in during normal use)- all other clocks are the same (and the CPU's both kick off at maximum 35 watts of heat- they use the same amount of power). From what I've heard, though, the new T420 (which should be available sometime this month) has better battery life and supports faster SSDs should you decide to add one later if you go that route.
