T440s Trackpoint problems

Question: T440s Trackpoint problems

I just got my new ThinkPad T440s, and I'm having some difficulties getting the Trackpoint to work properly. Whenever I power up the system, the Trackpoint is responsive for a minute or so and then completely stops working, while the touchpad works just fine. I have tried re-installing/ updating the Ultranav driver, but no luck. I have also tried a complete factory restore, and the problem remains. I noticed that when I don't have the Ultranav driver installed, the trackpoint works a little while longer but then gets a bit crazy. By that I mean moving the cursor using either touchpad or trackpoint somehow ends up opening shortcuts, moving icons or the taskbar, etc. It's hard to explain, but it's like the cursor moves all over the screen rapidly "left-clicking" and "right-clicking" all over the place. It's strange that when I'm going through the Windows installation prompts, the trackpoint seemed to work just fine. This and the fact that it works for a minute upon start-up make me think it's a software issue. Does anyone have any suggestions that I could try? I haven't tried doing anything in the BIOS, if there's something that could be done. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Preferred Solution: T440s Trackpoint problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: T440s Trackpoint problems

Hi zorero, You can check in the bios if the trackpoint is enabled but if it works sometimes it might be anyway. you should try to remove the keyboard, unplug the trackpad and replug it.It can be just just a connection problem where the plug is not properly attached to the motherboard. There is the link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual where you can find how to remove the keyboard: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t440s_hmm_en_sp40a25360_01.pdf Hope that helps, Vince.

Hi, I'm setting up my new thinkpad t440s and I cannot get my trackpoint to work.  It does not respond and in my mouse properties/thinkpad section, the Touchpad is clearly enabled, but the Trackpoint options are all greyed out.  In the pointing options dropdown, I can only see the option to 'Use TouchPad only.'  I strongly prefer the Trackpoint to the Touchpad and would prefer it if possible. I currently have Synaptics pointing device driver version 18.0.7.109, the most recent version.  I've tried rolling back to previous versions and this issue still persists.  I also have gone into BIOS and disabled and re-enabled the Trackpoint in boot settings. Unfortunately, since this is a work machine, I do NOT have the capability to remove the keyboard or replace parts.  Any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, I got my T440s in Dec 2013.  The touchpad and trackpoint worked then, but after a couple months the touchpad would work for a few minutes and then just stop responding.  After a while longer the trackpoint completely stopped working as well.  Now neither of them have worked for months - I've been using an external mouse.   I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers but that didn't help.  When I open Device Manager and click "Show hidden devices", the ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device shows up with a yellow triangle "!" icon.  Does anybody know how to fix this? Thank you!

Answer:T440s Touchpad & Trackpoint don't work

Hi Snowmc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with touchpad on ThinkPad T440s.

To proceed with troubleshooting steps please boot the system to safe mode and uninstall the UltrNav driver from control panel ? program & feature option and also from device manager.

Shutdown the system and remove the external mouse and then switch ON the system, after booting with normal mode it will install generic drivers. Please check if the generic driver is also giving the issue with touchpad.

If the issue still persists after performing above troubleshooting then please provide the MTM number of the system at the next reply.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

So after reinstalling the driver, my T440s Trackpoint is working as advertised, but while it was acting all wonky...something happened. The driver malfunctioned in a good way so that I could tap the touchpad with my thumb to invoke a left-click while using the TrackPoint. Normall, the driver locks out the touchpad completely while the TrackPoint is in use, so that the touchpad only functions as buttons. But the vertical travel of the touchpad is deep and it takes extra effort to depress completely each time. What's worse, the touchpad remains locked out after I move the cursor with the TrackPoint and then stop to leave it over an icon, so that I actually have to move the cursor with the touchpad before it will accept a tap as a left- or right-click. Is there any way to force the driver to let me use taps instead of clicks to inoke left and right click while using the TrackPoint? Also, is there any way to defeat the touchpad lockout? In my opinion, the touchpad itself is excellent as far as Windows touchpads go. They've gotton double-tap for right-click perfectly, and two-finger scrolling is actually quite nice. But they've also overlooked an opportunity to make TrackPoint use even easier and more user-friendly than it was with physical buttons.

We are starting to Roll out the T440s laptop. We are running into issues with the Trackpad like everyone else. It appears that if I want to use the Right-Click button in the upper corner I can only do so if I am using the Trackpoint. If I use the trackpad and try to Right-Click in the upper corner it does nothing. If I use the lower corner it works 50% of the time.If I use the Trackpoint and the upper right corner it works. However if I use the lower right it does not. Is there a way to change the behavior of the Trackpad/point so that I can use either the upper right and lower right at all times? It's going to be a pain to train users to use only the bottom or top depending on if they are using the Trackpad/Point.Thanks!

Answer:T440s Top Right-Click only works with TrackPoint

Hello.

I initially had this experience with my first Clickpad equipped machine, which was a T440s, and since I am a die-hard TrackPoint enthusiast, I simply disabled the touchpad in BIOS. It worked fine like that for me, but when I got my Helix, I decided to tinker with it for it to better suit my needs, and what I did was to make the right click areas bigger in the UltraNav config utility (Control Panel -> Mouse -> ThinkPad tab), and select Large in the button size.

After I did this, my whole experience of the Clickpad changed to the better, so I've enabled the touchpad again on my T440s, and the device is just superb to work on now. Sometimes I actually find myself using the touchpad, tapping (two finger tap for right click) and gestures specially, which I hardly ever do on my older ThinkPads.

Screenshot of my settings.

See if this helps you out.

I have a new T440s which came with Windows 8, and I upgraded to 8.1Nothing strange installed in it. Sometimes touchpad and/or trackpoint don't work at all after turning on, rebooting or recovering from a suspended state. It never fails while the system is running. When it happens, I reboot and it works fine. Already upgraded everything using System Update (BIOS, etc) and Windows Update. Sounds to me as a driver issue, not a hardware issue... but I am not 100% sure. What should I do? Should I reinstall any driver? How?

Answer:T440s touchpad and trackpoint issue

Uninstall the UltraNav driver from Device Manager or Programs and Features. Then run System Update; it should offer the UltraNav driver again.Alternatively, here's the manual download:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds034647

I've posted a description of my issue here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1395665 I've got pastebin links to various log files and the output of some diagnostic commands in the above post. In short, I've had my T440s since November, and it's been working just fine. About 5 days ago, after resuming from a suspend, my trackpoint and trackpad no longer work, though the keyboard works fine. I've removed the keyboard to see if I could access the connector to the motherboard, but it's not reachable from behind the keyboard. I then tried to remove the back panel, but it is a complete pain in the rear to remove. I've been going at it for about 40 minutes now, and I still can't get the panel to come apart from the front corners of the laptop. Additionally, after looking at some photos online, it seems like I won't be able to access the connection between the trackpad and the motherboard anyway without even further disassembling it, which I'm not sure I'm comfortable with. Does anyone see anything in the log files I linked in my post to the Arch BBS, or have any advice as to what I could do?

Answer:T440s Clickpad+Trackpoint completely nonfunctional

Update: I've tried updating the BIOS, this did not fix my issue. I've also checked the connection behind the keyboard for the trackpoint, and while I wasn't able to fully disconnect and reconnect the keyboard (for some reason what I see differs from the hardware maintenance manual), the connection seems fine, and it's below the keyboard's connector, so I don't know how it could've come undone. Also, it seems very strange that both the trackpad and trackpoint would stop working at the same time- aren't they on different connectors? It almost seems like I hit some sort of non-obvious hardware disable hotkey-combo for the trackpad/point (NOT in the BIOS- I've checked there a million times. Both trackpoint and pad are enabled). But none of my fn keys toggle it. Anyone have any ideas? I'm really getting annoyed that such an expensive laptop is having issues like this.

My T440s, for some while now, has been experiencing severe problems in both its clickpad and Trackpoint. I have installed both of the latest drivers on Lenovo's website, but to no avail. UltraNav installs completely fine. The other Synaptics driver doesn't seem to recognize the trackpad/trackpoint however.  Nevertheless, I don't even see a "Thinkpad" tab under "Mouse" in the Control Panel, which was previously there.  The touchpad doesn't work at all; the trackpoint will move on booting, but when clicking, it suddenly goes haywire, moves/clicks randomly into the left corner of the screen, and then freezes. Clicking on the clickpad seems to work, however. Is this a software or a hardware issue? And how can I resolve it?

Answer:T440s Clickpad & Trackpoint almost completely nonfunctional

Okay, I got the touchpad/trackpoint working by uninstalling everything Lenovo and installing an old (version 16 something) generic Synaptics driver. There's no middle-click/scroll nor gestures, but I guess that I'll have to live with it until a better solution presents itself.

Hey guys, this is my first posting, so I hope I get everything right. So, I have a weird problem. On my T440s, the trackpoint works alright when my computer wakes up from being shut off or standby. However, as soon as I do 2-4 clicks on my Trackpad, the trackpoint stops working. I did all Windows Updates, also did all Lenovo Updates, including of course the Ultranav Synaptics driver (reinstalled that several times, also as an administrator). Nothing worked. When my computer gets back from standby or from being shut off, the trackpoint works, even for longer periods of time. However, as soon as I use the touchpad to click a couple of times, it completely stops working and I can only get it to work again by restarting, going into standby or even installing a new driver (however, it then quits working again after a couple of touchpad-clicks). Any help / ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:T440s Trackpoint shuts off due to clicking with touchpad

No help, welcome in world of new Lenovo clickpad design. It just work like that, i have same issue. If you can return it back, just return that and buy something else.

I soley use trackpoint and turn off the lower touchpad part. The problem for me is that when I intend to press the left button, my habitactually makes me press the left edge of the middle button part. To me, the middle button part is too big and l'd like to change it.Is is possible to do that by editing the registry or hidden setting ofthe synaptics driver?

I enabled the "tap zones" feature in the Synaptics touchpad settings and configured the zones to right click and middle click. I notice that sometimes the zones stop working while tapping and navigating are still ok. It turns out that scrolling with the middle button and the trackpoint somehow prevents the tap zones from working.A quick fix is to move the cursor using the trackpoint, move it again using the trackpad, then the zones will function normally. However the fix isn't permanent.I hope that Lenovo / Synaptics will address this small issue in the next touchpad driver update.

After some recent UltraNav driver updates I have lost cursor and use of the trackpad and trackpoint. The yellow triangle shows up in device manager as the drivers cannot identify the hardware. I've tried uninstall/reinstall and rolling back to older drivers to no avail. This happened originally after an update on 1/26. I had to uninstall drivers, cleaned registrty keys, ran windows update, ran TVSU to reinstall drivers and that worked for a week. Then another update pushed on 2/9 knocked out the Trackpad again.  The device in enabled in both the control panel and BIOS. Disable/Reboot/Enable did not work. Rollback of drivers to 2 or 3 previous versions did not work. Thankfully I have the touch screen or my 15 month old T440 would be entirely useless. Anyone have similar issues and/or solution??

Like many people, my T440s trackpad and trackpoint stopped working for no apparent reason. There is no cursor at all on my system unless I plus in an external mouse. I've spent countless hours trying to fix this problem to no avail. Trackpoint and trackpad are enabled in bios, drivers are fine. I've been using an external mouse, which is annoying but workable at home. But now I'm about to go travelling and need the basic functionality of a built in pointing device.

Having just spent another hour perusing various threads here and elsewhere, it seems there is still no reliable fix for this issue years after originally reported to Lenovo. So, after a decade of using Thinkpads, I'm about to ditch them and buy a Mac. The decline in this brand's quality is shocking.

This post is my last-ditch attempt to find a solution. I'm not optimistic, but if anyone has any suggestions or ideas beyond the usual, please let me know. Thanks.

Guess I have my answer.... What a profound dissapointment that Lenovo cares so little about the quality of their products to not even bother addressing such a fundamental and seemingly quite common problem.

Hi,I recently got a Thinkpad T440s and I have two problems when using the trackpoint:1) When trying to right click, I like to hit the uppermost part of the trackpad (where it is slanted). However, this registers as a left click. Is there a way to change this (and if not could someone explain to me the rationale behind this)?2) Is there a way to enable middle clicking without 3rd party software? So far, I have only found this thread which suggests using TPMiddle. I just wanted to ask if that's still the way to go.Thanks

Answer:T440s: Trackpoint + right click and middle click

Did you experiment with the settings in the "ThinkPad" tab within the Mouse Properties dialog? (Tap <WinKey>, type "mouse" and choose the Lenovo UltraNav item that is found.) I've noticed that if both TrackPoint and TrackPad are active, it tries to intelligently swtich the location of the right click for you .. but not always what you had in mind!

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

I'm a  user of a Lenovo T440s for about a one year. I configure my click pad and track point so that I use both. Since the day I bought this laptop the UltraNav drivers have been giving problems. Each update seems to fix issues sometimes.. but they show up again and again. This is getting ridculous. I am really unhappy with this product that has basic user input issues such as the mouse/trackpoint/touchpad. I'm using the latest drivers currently with windows 8.1 1. The scroll wouldn't work using tracking point and middle mouse button resulting in restart to get it back. 2. Scroll suddenly stops working using two fingers on touch pad again restart.3. (This is new) Some Ctrl+clicks to open the links in new tabs in the browser results in a situation like the ctrl button is pressed constantly.. so scrolling using the two fingers or trackpad+middle button results in zooming the web page.Again I have to restart the computer to get it back to normal. So is this good user experience? Am I supporsed to restart the computer everytime when the mouse drivers mess up? Is there a way to "reset" all this so it's back to normall again without restarting?I hope someone who works for lenovo answers this. I'm willing to give some sort of feedback to fix the issues. Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

Hello all,I just got my Thinkpad T420 two weeks ago. Solid laptop overall, but recently I have some problems with my touchpad and trackpoint. There is a big movemental gap of the cursor when using trackpoint, and the touchpad is unusable. This happened once last week but then it disappeared after I disabled and then re-enabled trackpoint/touchpad, changing sensivity... Yesterday it happened again and this time it wont disappear after applying the same method. I tried updating the drivers, as well as reset BIOS (boot to BIOS -> F9 -> save) but none helped. I'm dualbooting windows 7 & arch linux, and the problem is present on both of the operating systems. This is really frustrating. Can someone please give me some suggestions what I could do to get rid of this annoying bug. Thanks very much.

I hope someone can help.  My Trackpoint has a mind of its own.  It just creeps up to the left and pins itself in the upper corner of the screen.  I have downloaded the latest drivers, this has no effect.  I am running XP S/3.  The battery problem is simply this, I don't know if the battery is 'shot' or the charger is not working.  Can anyone tell me how I can check either part before I have to buy something I don't need?I have been fooling around with this problem almost a month with no success.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:TrackPoint and Battery Problems

I had the exact same problem for months.  I finally gave up and uninstalled the trackpoint completely and started using the USB mouse that works with my tablet.  That part works great but if you can't use a mouse that plugs into the back of the computer or anything else like a keyboard that plugs into that spot.  Forgive me for not knowing the technical term for that spot. Just a note of caution - a month or two after I uninstalled the trackpoint, I started getting an error message 8611 (please see my post right below yours) and this may be related.  I'm waiting to find out. Good luck, I know it drove me completely crazy.  In the meantime, try using another mouse, preferable a USB mouse since that's the only one that seems to respond. debbie

Just upgraded from a T43P to a W500 and instantly I can notice how messed up the trackpoint mouse is.It just jumps randomly on its own!! Also...using the left click button does not actually click the link but thepointer actually jumps and settles down on a different part of the screen after clicking. Also every now and then, the trackpoint will stop moving the pointer(freeze) and it recovers after 4-5 seconds. This is really frustrating!! Anyone else seen this before?  DD

Answer:W500 trackpoint problems

Hello Desidon: I have always found the trackpoint device (the pointing stick) to be one of the most reliable things on ThinkPads.  I upgraded from a T42P to a W500, and did not notice any difference in trackpoint function - the stick on the W500 works as well as the stick on the T42P did. The operating system itself (Vista or XP) offers some 'options' that, if enabled, might be what is causing the unexpected behaviour you are experiencing.  If you go to the mouse control panel and have a look around in there, you will find that there is an option that causes the pointer to automatically jump to the default acceptance button in dialog boxes whenever dialog boxes appear.  I have turned that option off, I find that it is distracting. By default, both the touchpad and the trackpoint stick are enabled.  I have disabled the touchpad on my W500 because I find that I often inadvertently activated the touchpad when I am typing or otherwise operating the computer.  You can easily turn the touchpad off (while leaving the trackpoint on), the control for that is in the Mouse control panel under the "UltraNav" tab.  My guess is that if you turn off the above two options, 99% of your problems will disappear. There have been issues reported with the cursor on the screen occasionally freezing up.  That is being discussed in a different discussion (Temporary but DAILY mouse / system freezing (W500 w/ Vista Business 32), and we have no... Hi, I'm having problems with my ultranav trackpoint on my Thinkpad R61. Although I have disabled Press-to-select function (which I find annoying) my trackpoint continue to select items I am pointing to (even though I am not clicking on them). Did you have similar problems and do you know how to solve this? I will appreciate any kind of help  Tomasz

I am having problems with Trackpoint and the TouchPad.  I had to disable Trackpoint because it was constantly clicking and opening anything it was pointed at.  The TouchPad pointer will not click and open anything, though, oddly enough, it will work if the computer is placed in standby mode for a lengthy period of time. I have reinstalled the original OS and other software several times now, including reinstalling the latest ultra nav driver and have all the other latest updates (BIOS 1.45).   I find it unlikely that this is a Hardware problem, but I have not been able to fix it with the software reinstalls.   Could it be the SSD? Is anyone familiar with these type of anomalies?   Any ideas for a fix? W510 4318CTOQ820 @1.73Ghzwin7 64bitfactory installed128gb SSD12gb ram

Hello. I am using a W520 i7 Win7 Pro 64 bit.Can someone tell me why the TrackPoint scroll function doesn't work in some windows/applications? For example I cannot scroll folders in Windows Explorer. I mean by holding the midle button and moving the track stick. Because by swiping two fingers on touchpad works great in same applications. Thank you.

Are you on the latest UltraNav driver package? Middle-scrolling (Standard) works fine for me in Explorer.

I've got a Lenovo L430-2465 with 64 bit Windows 7 Pro, an i5-3360M 2.8GHz CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an Intel HD-4000 graphics card.At seemingly random times, my trackpoint as well as the row of mouse buttons above the trackpad will stop working.  It only happens when I'm playing a game. So far, it has happened in Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, and Half Life 2. The game never lags before or after the trackpoint quits.  I can still navigate around using the trackpad.  I can put my computer to sleep and immediately log back in, and the trackpoint and buttons will work perfectly. I don't even have to close my game. I've checked the control panel, and when it stops working, the trackpoint is still enabled, so it isn't an issue there. I can't find any evidence of this happening to anyone else, but any help you can give me will be very welcome.

Sometimes, more often then helix is unplugged from power abapter, touhpad and trackpoint just stops warking at all. Keyboard working fine. Sometimes after about 30sseconds of tapping, mouse cursor moves a little, or touchpad "returns to live", but for about 3-5seconds, and then "dies" again. All drivers are updated from Lenovo site with their latest versions.OS doesnt matter, happends on windows 7 and windows 8 both.

Answer:Helix touchpad/trackpoint problems

Hi, mr_Jack

I would recommend uninstalling the current driver and see if it is the driver that is causing the issue. This can be accomplished by navigating to Control Panel ? Device Manager. While in Device Manager, open the tree labelled Mice and other pointing devices. Right-click on the device and select Properties. Next, navigate to the Driver tab and click on Uninstall... at the bottom. This will uninstall the driver, which will allow Windows to install a generic driver. If the generic driver functions without issue, then I would recommend either trying to reinstall the UltraNav driver or giving the Synaptics base driver installed, which can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Computer: W540 Thinkpad I have searched around the forum and have not found anything about these issues I'm having. If they are there and I could not find them can you post a link to the solutions?  I am not sure if these issues are because of me upgrading to Windows 10, but it seems like that is when all of these issues started.  RESOLVED: After I posted this I took my keyboard off to see if everything was properly plugged in. I then noticed that the right ribbon cable was just sitting ther and wasn't plugged in. My blacklight works now, my trackpoint goes in thr right direction and I'm sure everything will be clickable now too. Hopefully everything is good now.  Problem 1: My Trackpoint is inverted, it drifts, and I can no longer use the "Scroll" Middle button on my trackpad. The trackpoint's Up and Down directions have been flipped ofr some reason. The left and right directions are fine however. Is there a reason this is? Because it is inverted I do not use it often, however it drifts a lot. So that makes it impossible for my trackpad to be used, because it think sI'm using my trackpoint. I tried disabling the track point in the settings but it sill works, and drifts. Also the middle button on the trackpad doesn't work, so I can't scroll using the trackpoint. I updated the UltraNav Driver to the newest one, multiple times, and nothing has changed. Is there an old driver that will fix my issues? Problem 2: I can not click on thin... Read more

Hi, I recently disassembled my Thinkpad W520 to clean out the fan and check a few things on the motherboard and when I put it back together both the trackpoint and touchpads have stopped working.  The trackpoint is attached to the motherboard at the same connector as the keyboard which works fine and I was very careful with static, dust, etc when I dissambled everything so I don't really see how anything could have gotten damaged.  First time I turned it back on the trackpoint worked fine but I had forgotten to plug the CMOS battery back in and when I went back and did that it stopped working.  Not sure about the touchpad, I dont use it much so didn't check it at first.  So far my attempts to uninstall/reinstall the drivers haven't helped.  The touchpad's no longer recognised in device manager but the mouse and keyboard are (and nothing's turned off in the BIOS either).  Is this just a sign of a bad motherboard or am I missing something easier to fix here?  Up until this point everything worked fine other than some USB issues which were do to a physical connetion problem.  It seems strange that the keyboard is ok but the mice dont work. Anyone have any  advice or suggestions?

Answer:trackpoint and touchpad problems - W520

Hello S_Zahara, Motherboards are the most sensitive and delicate part of the computer. It may be possible that when you removed the CMOS Battery, that may have changed some settings in the bios. Make sure the trackpad is enabled in your bios settings. Also, to make sure the CMOS battery is getting a full charge, leave your computer on for 24 hours. If the problem still persists, I would reseat the track pad to the motherboard. Hope that helps.

I just got a T450s and have been having some issues with the synaptics drivers. First, the trackpad: when I scroll with two fingers, and I let go of one of the fingers, it keeps scrolling. Is there any way I can change this? Also, there's a gesture to go forwards and backwards, but it only works with three fingers and goes the opposite direction I'm used to. I tried installing older synaptics drivers, but they didn't seem very compatible with my trackpad; it only let me tap to click instead of actually clicking the trackpad down. These two things don't seem like bugs to me, but more of just lack of features that i'm wondering if there is a way to get them to work the way I'd like them to. The real problem I'm having is with the scorll button on the trackpoint. When I press it, the cursor changes to the scroll bar. When I start to scroll, though, it doesn't do it smoothly, whether I have it set to "standard" or "traditional". When it's doing that, the cursor flashes rapidly, too, as soon as I touch the trackpoint.

Hi, Obviously not able to open these critters up. I have a new T440s that I would like to transfer my programs and data to.  Is there a program out there that can do this without having to pull out the hard drive to image? My current one has Windows 8.1. The new one has Windows 7 with the Windows 8.1 recovery discs.  Issue is, I believe that the Windows license is tied to the hardware?  Therefore I would have to make a recovery disc set of Windows 7.....then use the Windows 8.1 recovery discs then move my programs and data over.  Windows Easy Transfer does not look like it can do the best job. I thought about bringing it to the store for them to swap the drives but then worried alot about the whole licensing issue.  (not to mention the possible loss of my warranty) Unless if it is done professional and the license could be stripped out of the existing drive and new drive moved to new machine....perhaps a way to get the license keys from the new system somehow. Thanks in advance.

Answer:T440S to T440s - program and data transfer, OS licensing issue

Hello.

If you look at the bottom of the machines, and they both have the Windows 8 sticker, your machines are licenced and the product key is embedded in the BIOS.

You can use this program: ProduKey to view and write down your keys, but if you use either the Recovery disks or a WIndows 8 Pro retail DVD to reinstall Windows, your key will be picked up automatically by the installation.

For migration of your files, programs and settings, you could simply clone your current WIndows 8.1 installation onto the new drive using, assuming your installation is UEFI and thus your HD is GPT partitioned, Macrium Reflect, which many users here have had a good experience with. That would save you time from having to reinstall Windows on the new machine as well and all you'd have to do is to enter the embedded Windows key of your new machine to activate it.

Macrium Reflect

That's at least one suggestion, but there are many ways to go about this.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hi Folks, Had a bad T440s that is about to go back. However, under the exact same circumstances and software, the battery on the old machine would last 7 hours.  The battery on the new machine lasts only 2 to 2.5 hours. Anyone else out there experience this problem.? My setup is exactly the same as the previous machine.  The only difference when I ran some software to get statistics is that the battery in the old one was a sony and the battery in the new one is a Sanyo.  The external battery is the same. I've done my checks and there are no issues with the batteries. I've done everything I can. Eliminated processes, services and disabled devices and programs from startup, power profiles.  We are talking a bare work/surf/email machine with very little video usage.  Stlil having the wifi issue too. Lenovo wants to send a tech over or have me ship it to L2 since it is a new machine however I know this will result in a motherboard replacement, (which will result in a new machine anyway which I have asked for) unless the screen has something to do with it.  Other than that surveillance hardware/software tends to draw a lot of power. At this point I need a fully functioning machine hence my reluctance to ship it off and too much life stuff going on to get someone over. Anyone know of another useful battery tool outside of the Battery Eater Pro etc that let's you know where the power is going? I have found a few references on th... I am having persistent problems with the touchpad and trackpoint on my L530.  I prefer to use the trackpoint usually, and found that the touchpad was super-sensitive and caused the cursor to jump around during normal (touch) typing so I disabled the touchpad.  Next time the thinkpad resumed from sleep mode, the mouse was frozen.  Nothing would reactivate it.  I had to switch user, which temporarily fixed it, and then reactivate the touchpad.  If I try and change trackpad settings at any time other than directly after a reboot, the settings are greyed-out and I can't touch them. Right now, both trackpad and trackpoint are completely dead again, but I've plugged in a USB mouse and that seems to be working, so I've given up fiddling with it.  This will be a pain when I'm moving around with the laptop though! The OS is Windows 7.  Yesterday I went looking for the most recent driver, uninstalled the existing one (as per guidance) and installed the new driver.  No luck.   I've heard this is a common problem and apparently installing a generic driver works, but I'm not completely sure what to use.  Anyone know?  Oh, and I'm not sure if this is related, but quite often when I resume from sleep mode the keyboard is also dead.  However, if I switch user it comes back to life.  So annoying but not the end of the world.

Hello,my t440s will turn off, when i push against the bottom cover near the connector of the battery. Lifting the thinkpad with one hand is sometimes enough to turn it off. I think it's a connection problem between the external battery and the notebook. -the problem only exists if the external battery is connected-the problem will not appear if i press the battery release button during pressing against the bottom cover. To reproduce the problem:-insert external battery-boot computer, wait until windows is started-press against the bottom cover -> the laptop goes off Without the bottom cover i can reproduce the problem (the battery is not locked without the cover):-if i remove the battery without activating the small switch near the release pusher, the laptop goes off-if i remove the battery while activating the small switch near the release pusher, the laptop stays on. I think, when i push against the bottom cover, the battery looses the connection. On my T440s the connector seems to be very deep. It does not really fit into the battery. Does anybody have the same problem? Can anybody with a t440s look at the battery connector: Is the connector properly aligned, or is it on a different height?  Push at the red position: http://i59.tinypic.com/25006c0.jpgConnector: http://i60.tinypic.com/qzncao.jpg Thanks for your helpAndi

Hello all - I have an X1 Carbon that is only a few weeks old and have had nothing but problems...please see the list below.  They all seem to be somehow interrelated but I simply can't find a solution.   When powering up, the computer freezes mid start up (at the windows icon screen) until various buttons on the keyboard are pushed.  I've waited in excess of 5 minutes to start up to test this out...it seems that 100% of the time the computer will not start on it's own by simply pressing the power button.Once the computer does get to the start screen, the mouse cursor slowly drifts on its own across the screen until several more buttons are pushed on the keyboard to stop it (hitting right click a few times usually works).  This occurs both using an external mouse at the office and the touchpad at home. While in the Google Chrome browser, the tabs close when clicking them instead of switching to that tab.  Restarting the computer resets this, but throughout the day it will keep occurring.  Hitting the middle click fixes this temporarily (but that leads to a different problem).  This occurs both using an external mouse at the office and the touchpad at home.  This also has about a 100% failure rate after the computer wakes up from a sleep mode as well as sporatically throughout the day.Due to problems with trackpoint, my default is to keep trackpoint disabled.  When trackpoint is enabled, the cursor sporadically will change to som... Hi I have a non-touch screen Z500 i7. I just checked and it is running Windows 8. It is brand new. Out of the box the pointer freezes sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours of usage. I have two T440s's, both thankfully with the AUO displays. One I've had for nearly a year, the other is new. The contrast is much worse on the new machine. Blacks are lighter, and whites are darker. I've gone through windows 8 calibration but there doesn't seem to be any way to change the contrast. Is there any solution for this or does the new machine have a defective display?  Not sure if this matters but I should mention that both the old and new T440s came originally with LG displays but I was able to get them replaced with AUO.

I just can';t seem to get external DVD players to work with my Thinkpad T440S (Windows 7).  I have a Smasung and also a Liteon DVD and both have the same issue which would suggest it is a software or setting issue.

I plug in the DVD and it is recognised but often it will keep appearing and disapparing in My Computer.  When I insert a music CD or software disk it starts to spin and after some time is recognised but does not start to play/install or does so sporadically while continuing to spin/read.

Hello world, I'm posting in this forum because I'm having unexpected problems with the fan and the temperature with my T440s.I bought this laptop in July the last year, and everything was working properly until last month. I don't know why but the the fan is making noise almost all the time and specially when if I try to watch some video, and also I think the temperature grows. Before this only happened when I was looking a video in high quality for a long time, which I think it was normal. But now this happens too often and I would like to know why, which could be the cause of this. If you have any ideas or suggestions I'd be very thankful!

Since some time in May ( I mention this since the last clickpad driver was released some time in April) Scrolling has been mostly broken on my T440s. While it works fine in every iteration of firefox (Aurora, Waterfox) I cannot scroll in any other browser (Chrome, Chrome Canary, Opera, and IE) Scrolling works fine in every other program. At some point chrome updated and now scrolling with the trackpoint DOES work. I want to know what I can do to solve this. I tried to reinstall and roll back my drivers, but I cannot seam to find older versions of the clickpad driver. Scrolling works perfectly with an external mouse and with the touch screen. Does anyone else have this problem?  I am running Windows 8.1.1, on the 1080p touch screen US model witohut discrete graphics  with a Samsung 840 EVO 256Gb ssd on which I installed windows 8. It is worth noting that I have ubuntu installed on my 16Gb cache M.2 drive and scrolling works fine in chromium there.

I am writing about a haziness/blur on my touchscreen laptop. I sent it to Lenovo Support, and they said there is nothing wrong with it. If I plug the laptop into a regular computer screen the difference is clear. Is this a problem with the touch screens? Should I expect that the touch screen is not going to be as clear as the non touch due to the extra layer of plastic or glass? I spoke to  3 people at the Depot that has the computer and am getting no where. They are telling me the screen was just dirty. That is prob true, but not the cause of the unclear screen. Thanks

Hi, I have been having some problems for a long time now and it is just getting on my nerves. I have a thinkpad L530  (model 2481-2SG) and in summary, the problems are: 1) Trackpoint and touchpad software seems to fail permanently after waking up from hibernation/sleep (tick boxes on the mouse configuration menu are also greyed out) and so, trackpoint cursor sensitivity is lost. 2) Sometimes trackpoint and touchpad do not work at all and if i get unlucky, keyboard may not work either, so I have to hard-reset. 3) I have 7 unknown devices in my device manager window and I have tried looking for their drivers for months without no avail (lenovo.com, lenovo update, searching on forums...)A snapshot of my screen: http://oi43.tinypic.com/dxo2hg.jpg I have tried to solve my problems updating all my drivers (both through lenovo.com and lenovo update), resetting all the configurations, default bios... Besides this sleeping problem, computer works just fine, smoothly and fast. I am just afraid of sleeping/hibernating my computer cause keyboard and trackpoint may not work after waking up... and I hate to do a hard-reset. Also, I have windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, BIOS 2.52, 4G RAM Thank you in advance for your time, because I do not know what else to do and these problems are driving me crazy.

Hello, I have a brand new T440s notebook. While operating on battery power, I am experincing regular (once every hour or so) disconnects from wireless networks. The connection to the internet drops and "limited connectivity" is reported by Windows. The connection to the wireless network appears to be maintained, but not other SSIDs are visible. Using Windows' "Disagnose" function results in the option to "turn on" the wireless adapter. Clicking "yes" brings up a screen saying that the problem was "fixed", and everything works for another hour. At no point does it ever appear that the adapter is turned off, so I have no idea what it actually does. This does not always work; sometimes a reboot is requires. None of this happens when the system is plugged in. This happens regardless of what power plan (Balanced, High Performance, etc.) is selected. I have reinstalled all related drivers, twice. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am out of ideas.

I'm having a few issues with a t440s + 135w Ultra Dock. I've updated the dock's firmware and it works fine with my two external monitors. I have one problem that is driving me crazy. When I put the machine to sleep I can't wake it up with my mouse or keyboard. If I plug the mouse and keyboard directly into the machine they will wake it correctly but in the dock, it's no go. The other problem is once I actually bring the machine back from sleep it has to re-initialize all of the usb devices on the dock, like they've been completely unplugged. This second problem wastes a lot of time, right now I have the wireless usb mouse plugged directly into the machine so I can wake up with the mouse but my usb keyboard takes about 10 seconds to re-initialize, so I am stuck waiting at the lock screen for that long. I've turned on the USB when sleeping and the charge USB while sleeping in the BIOS - didn't help. Also made sure that all the devices could wake the machine up in the Device Manager. One other "issue" that is only mildy annoying is anytime Windows shows my a UAC prompt the screen goes black and takes about 5 seconds to render but only on the monitors attached to the dock. I'm running windows 7 pro 64 if that helps at all.

Answer:ThinkPad T440s + Ultra Dock problems

The UAC screen blanking issue is gone after installing all the optional updates under Windows Update. Only the USB issues persist.

If Im connecting only the displayport - the display is ok on the laptop and the monitor2. If Im connecting only dvi - the display is ok on the laptop and the monitor3. If Im using both displayport and dvi - both monitors are going to sleep mode and are turned off. Ive tried to upgrade both bios and drivers with no result. I have just rolled out 3 x ThinkPad T440s laptops with Ultra Docks running 2 x 24" monitors via DisplayPort connected to them.  These are the first 40-series ThinkPads I have implemented, and these are also our first systems running Windows 8/8.1; everything else runs Windows 7.  We run Windows Enterprise, so the laptops have a clean image installed by me. THE ISSUE:The laptops work great on their own.  The experience with the Ultra Docks is far from perfect right now though.  On all three PCs, shutting down or restarting the PC while docked causes the computer to either hang at a black screen or get stuck when the Lenovo logo: the little circle balls to indicate Windows is loading never come up.  The only fix for this is to hold down power to shut off the laptop, and then undock and redock the laptop.  It is ridiculous a computer cannot restart successfully on the dock.  I assume firmware can fix this? I also have an issue with our existing Bluetooth keyboards and mice not being recognized all the time on startup - most of the time we have to manually reconnect them on boot.  However, at this point I think that is a Windows 8.1 or Logitech problem. Other than that, quite happy with the ThinkPad T440s (and Windows 8.1).

Answer:ThinkPad T440s + Ultra Dock problems

FURTHER ISSUE:I think others have reported similar issues to this with the new docks and 40-series ThinkPads... We use Dell UltraSharp U2412M monitors which are 1920x1200 resolution.  All the monitors are connected by DisplayPort and are detected as being Dell monitors by Windows. One of the ThinkPad T440s' went to sleep on the dock while the user was at lunch.  The user returned from lunch and woke it up.  One of the monitors was detected as a "Generic Plug and Play" monitor and was set to 800x600 resolution.  It was not possible to set the resolution back to 1920x1200, but a restart fixed the issue. A POSSIBLE FURTHER ISSUE:This same laptop successfully restarted on the dock.  But upon logging into Windows 8.1 Enterprise, the local network shares failed to load, suggesting a network connectivity issue.  Not sure if this is dock-related or not, or if it is just a Windows 8.1 Enterprise issue.

I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Win 10 in the hopes that perhaps the screen blakning problem would have been mysteriously fixed but I have not gotten that far. The upgrade took place without a hitch but the power manager no longer functions. The opening screen is displayed but that is it and then an error dialog is displayed. The task manager shows the power manager as being a 32 bit app which frankly i have never paid attention to. Should it be 32 bit or 64? Does anyone know how to remove it from within Win 10? Frankly i am thinkng of getting rid of most of the Lenovo software but would like to remove the power manager first and use the native Windows stuff. Any asistance would be greatly appreicated.

Hi, I have a problem with my laptop (just over a week old) and can?t find a solution.Model: Thinkpad T440sThe laptop came with Windows 7 and apparently was working fine. I installed Windows 8 with the DVDs that came with the laptop and started having problems (see below for details). I went online to install Windows 8.1. Same problems. Tried resetting the Bios (2.17) to system defaults and, as it didn?t solve the problem, updated to Bios 2.29 to no avail. Finally I reformatted the SSD and installed Windows 8.1 directly form DVD (not the Lenovo DVDs). Then I installed the drivers with Lenovo System Update (I installed all critical and recommended updates except for the ?Intel Management Engine 10.0 Software ? 8.1 [64]?; this update once selected seems to install, asks to restart the PC, but once I manually restart it and run again the Lenovo System Update it says it isn?t installed...). I am using Bios, not UEFI.The problems with Windows 8.1 are as follow:1. Restart: the laptop shuts down, the LED on the Power Button go off, then on again (as if the computer was restarting), stay on for a couple of seconds and then go off. I have to press the power button manually for the laptop to restart.2. Power button doesn?t work when the laptop is on: I can press it or even hold it down for half a minute and nothing happens (the only way to force a shutdown is via the emergency-reset hole ? fortunately I didn?t have to do it though).3. Hi. I am a system administrator and are deploying computers to employees in a company.  I use Update Retriever and ThinInstaller to update drivers on the Lenovo Laptops.  It has worked fine on all other models than the new models that came this year.  On a T430s I get all the drivers from update retriever when using the thininstaller on the client, but on the new modell T440s I only get one driver! (I have downloaded drivers i want on the update retriever). I only get the "ACHI" driver on the new models when using thininstaller. The same happens to all the new 2014 models. No problem on models from last year.. I have checked that the drivers are "active" in the update retriever consoll".  Does anyone have the same problem ?  Regards Emil

Answer:Problems with Thininstaller on new Thinkpad's. (T440s, T440p, X240)

I also had big problems with the Thin Installer on the T440x devices. I've found out that the Intel HD Graphics driver was causing a reboot due to wrong used commands.- Open the Update Retriever and double click on the Intel HD Graphics driver.- On the installation command line you should remove the -B option. This -B option is causing the reboot.

I have the dock labelled FRU P/N 04W3947 (Marketing PN 40A20135XX) I have a 4K display port screen. It works fine at 4k when connected directly to the laptop's DP. When connected to either dock DP, it is detected by the laptop and the correct resolution is seen, but no image displays on the screen. As mentioned in the subject, I have already applied the firmware update from Feb 10 (2.17) and ran it again to be sure it shows the updated firmware version. Help! The whole reason I bought the new T440s and dock was to use the 4k display. There are several other people in the office where I work waiting on the outcome of fixing this before upgrading to the T440 and new dock.

Auhhh, I'm not alone.  This is driving me nuts! I have the ThinkPad Ultra Dock - 90W (PN 40A20090AU) Am currently having to run my external monitor via the mini disply port on my laptop, as the doc port produces the same results as above.  Oddly sometimes it will work, but only until I turn off the screen, unplug, or the monitors computer turns the displays off after inactivity.  After that it can be days before it magically stats working again... for a short time. Aditional symptons though not described by tmhardie,  My external monitor is a dell U2711, with touch controls on the bezel.  When it's plugged into the docking station the monitor controls freeze too... as in I can't change inputs, brightness etc.  It's like the displayport on the docking station is putting out some wierd signal that's spazzing out my monitor.  Never had this before from other computers. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Lance

My laptop uses a track point mouse, which is a red covred plastic thing in the middle of my keyboard on my laptop. I am using an IBM thinkpad 600x laptop. Anyways, my mouse on my laptop is broken. it goes all over my screen and i can't control it. it is spastic, and it does not move alot of times as well. And I have tried to disable it, but it did not work. Also, when I plug a regular mouse in, it works fine, unless the trackpoint is acting up. I want to disable the trackpoint mouse, but still use a regular mouse. Is that possible?

Question: Trackpoint cap

I'm not sure if this is the place I'm supposed to post this. I absolutely hate the trackpoint when I type.  I type quite fast and I hit the trackpoint every once in a while -- but this is enough to really get on my nerves.  It's absolutely distracting.  Imagine typing out your thoughts then all of a sudden you hit the thing, get distracted, then irritated, and your thoughts gone.  ThinkPads are supposed to help you think.  The trackpoint unfortunately doesnt...  Are there a replacement tips that's depressed enough (and maybe colored black...) so that I dont hit it accidentally when I type?  Removing the tip works fine -- but it looks so ugly without it (makes it look like i'm using a broken equipment). Oh and I dont mind if the replacement cap will render the trackpoint unusable.  I just need it low enough so I dont accidentally hit it.

these are the three different types of trackpoint caps. You might get lucky with the first type and there is no black trackpoint caps produced by Lenovo.

You can disable the trackpoint by pressing Fn + F8 in windows and then select trackpad only. You can also disable trackpoint from BIOS menu.

Question: Trackpoint gone...

I did the usual "Windows update" this morning. After the installation had completed I noticed that my Trackpoint has "disappeared"! There is no reaction whatsoever when pressing the red dot and I can't control the mouse with it any more. I then checked in the control panel (no trace) and then had to learn, that it doesn't even exist in the device manager, either. I then rebooted, no change. I then even powered off and reboot from power off again, still no trackpoint! And after I downloaded the trackpoint driver from the Lenovo drivers download site and wanted to (re-)install the driver, I got an error message "this driver can not be installed on non-trackpoint systems". ?!? What? What the %@[email protected]#*%?  Where has my trackpoint gone??? How come, that it has completely disappeared? How do I get this thing working again? Edited: I later noticed, that a part of that Windows Update apparently was a new "Wacom Two Finger Touch" driver. Might that have to do with my disappeared Trackpoint? Michael PS.: Boy - is this annoying to have to work without Trackpoint!

Answer:Trackpoint gone...

I just had to learn that there is a Fn-key (F8) that allows to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad. I must have accidentally operated that button without noticing (in fact, I hadn't even known before that there IS such an option...).Its setting was on "Touchpad only". After re-enabling the trackpoint there everything came back to normal. Wheew. What a relieve! :-) And it (most probably) had nothing to do with the Windows Update - just an unlucky conincidence! Michael

Good afternoon all,
We have an older IBM thinkpad 600x, that my husband uses to play simple off line games and read a few emails. The past few days when booting we are getting the error #08611.
From what I have been able to find I believe that this has something to do with the trackpoint.
We use a wireless mouse with this so do not need the track point. Can someone please tell me how to disable the trackpoint?
Thanks!!!
I wish a Happy & prosperous 2010 to all.

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.

Now that the 5th gen Thinkpad is here, the decline of the trackpoint becomes ever clearer.  Frankly, most of us would not be buying Thinkpads if they didn't have the trackpoint.  That's the X1's main advantage.  But Lenovo keeps making it worse.  First, the trackpoint caps that will fit the gen 4 and 5 come in only one, unpopular, variant and you can't get the soft rim version.  But more importantly, Lenovo keeps on degrading the software control of the trackpoint.  It used to be that you could adjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint, making it more or less stiff.  Even the softest setting was inadequate but it was something.  In the 5gen there is no option to change the stiffness or responsiveness of the trackpoint's movements at all.  Lenovo: hear your customers!! Please make the trackpoint MORE not less adjustable.

Hi All,Could someone help me to identify if my trackpoint on the T420S is broken? The images are here,http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7643/fig1k.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/199/fig2h.jpg  In the first image, the red trackpoint can easily come out of the fixture on the keyboard. If I take out the red cap, there is a black thing as shown in second image located on key "G."  I try to jam it into the fixture, but did not work out.Should this black thing need to always stay in the fixture? Is it just be glued to the fixture?Should I ask Lenovo for a service? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Is my trackpoint broken?

The images don't work, however, I think I understand.  The Trackpoint is a red rubber cap that just fits on a black plastic post between the G, H, and B keys.  It lifts right off of the black plastic post.  The post is a permanent part of the keyboard.  The "eraser" head is user replaceable when necessary. The underside of the Trackpoint "eraser" is hollowed out to fit over the black post.  It is snug, but does not require "jamming."  When in place, does it work?

When you say the TrackPoint is loose, are you refering to the red cap that covers it?  If so, it's probably just worn out and needs to be replaced.  You can order replacements from Lenovo.  The part number is 73P2698, and here in the US, they're $9.99.  Sometimes they're also available on eBay.

Question: Trackpoint problem

First of all, sorry if this questions been asked and answered. I've been searching off an on for several weeks for any online help to a trackpoint annoyance I've been having with no luck. I'm on a T61p running XP. (I upgraded the stock Vista, following an online guide). I have the Ultranav utility installed (I can see and change the options for the trackpoint/touchpad in the mouse control panel). Both the trackpoint and touchpad work. However, every once in a while the trackpoint just becomes totally unresponsive and the mouse pointer refuses to respond or move. For like 3-4 seconds. What's odd is that when this happens, the touchpad still works. (I'm trying to move or scroll with the trackpoint / topmost scroll button+trackpoint with now response, but use other finger to test touchpad and that responds.) It's really odd and really annoying. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice? Thanks!

OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

If I remove the entire palm rest and touchpad panel, I'm able to get the trackpoint to work, however once the touchpad is connected, the trackpoint just stops working.

I tried to enable it on the Ultranav program but it just doesn't work.

I tried the mouse properties and the trackpoint function is greyed out as shown below.

I tried installing all versions of Ultranav, tried BIOS updates, tried cleaning the connectors, and still can't get the trackpoint to work together with the touchpad.

Any advice to this issue is greatly appreciated.

Answer:T61 - can't enable TrackPoint

Hi Dyna, Welcome to the forum. When you say Trackpoint doesn't work, do you mean:1. That trackpoint itself is not workingor 2. The left click, right click and scroll buttons associated with the trackpoint doesn't work. ========Also, you did not mention whether your trackpad works or not. Finally, what happens when you disable the trackpad in the BIOS menu? Does that affect your trackpoint and associated buttons' behaviours?

yeah i have that problem, and i have a friend with the same problem. its just because the rubber doesnt stay seated right on the piece is sitting on, if you push on it too hard. thats my guess, but i could be wrong. i notice if i dont push on the rubber part very hard it keeps that from happening. for some reason i always push straight down on the rubber piece and thats when it does it the most.

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

Hello, Got x120e the other day and I have one question: This is my first Thinkpad (and first time witha trackpoint) - the trackpoint moves kind of choppy. It's not smooth movements like with the trackpad, as if it's missing frames or something. It's still perfectly useable but seems odd. Is this normal?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

No, it's not normal.  Mine moves as smooth as the touchpad (if not smoother) and responds to how much I move the stick.  Have you looked into the UltraNav Properties field of the trackpoint?  I'll leave this up to the experts to help you here.  This is my first Lenovo product too. But I'll like to comment that I wish the trackpoint would be at positions where your fingers will be while holding the machine.  The middle position works fine for a bigger laptop, but this is an ultraportable. Remember the IBM PalmTopPC110?  http://www.komotch2.com/tps/pt110.htm And the Toshiba Libretto:  http://www.silverace.com/libretto/libretto100j.jpg Some models' trackpoints are even located at behind the screen (i.e. on the lid).PalmTopPC110

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

I know I just posted a thread, but I figured that issue is global enough to warranty its own. But this one seems to be specific to me.I'm a new Thinkpad (and trackpoint) user, and the trackpoint is very choppy for me. It seems to skip frames. For example, making a circular motion with the trackpad results in a continuous, smooth motion. But not so with the trackpoint. It seems to be micro-jumping (or skipping frames as I prefer to call it). This is easily noticeable when holding down the middle trackpoint button and attempting to scroll a page. The page does not scroll smoothly at all (has nothing to do with smooth scrolling, that's something else and not what I'm talking about). Now this isn't just with this X220. Before the X220 I briefly owned a x120e that had this EXACT same problem. I asked about it and people told me that is not normal. So I returned it and got this X220, but it's the same problem. The weird thing is that while this choppiness is present in Windows, it was just fine during the Windows install process. I've tried: disabling the trackpad, reducing/increasing trapoint sensetivity, updating drivers, removing drivers and reinstalling, bumping the priority of the driver to high. None helped. What are the chances I'd receive two machines with the same problem?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

Disabling the trackpad from the BIOS fixed the issue it seems (its definitely much smoother). Diasbling it within Windows did not help. If I recall correctly disabling the trackpad in the x120e from the BIOS was not an option. Too bad. But odd that others do not have this problem. Oh and my palm was not resting on the trackpad

Is there any way to use the trackpoint on Lenovo computers as a joystick?  I.e. a device that would be useful for a flight simulator?  Essentially, it wouldn't be moving the mouse along a line based on the direction you're pushing it in with a speed based on your finger pressure,  but rather moving the mouse to a stationary position on the screen based on the direction and pressure you're pushing on it with.

After just a few months of usage, my W510's TrackPoint cap came loose. I ordered a three-part TrackPoint cap collection on eBay. Alas, the caps don't fit.

No surprise if you look at this photo of a non-W-series keyboard with the cap removed. The TrackPoint post in my W-series ThinkPad is yellow rather than black and significantly smaller:

Also, the W-series is prominently absent from the list of supported models in Lenovo's specs of the replacement caps.

Anyone know if replacement caps for the W-series are available?

Also, how would I attach the cap? Just pushing it back didn't really do it for my original cap, it kept coming loose.

Answer:Replacement TrackPoint cap?

some of the cap collection on ebay is fake. The W510 uses the same keyboard as mine T400s, and the real Lenovo trackpoint from T60 fits the T400s keyboard perfectly.

For the past week or two it seems that the mouse clicks on its own on my T420. This is in TrackPoint only mode (TouchPad disabled) with press to select disabled. This issue is reproducible as it generally happens right after a normal click or unclick. For example, if I highlight text in a word processor by clicking and dragging my cursor over the text when I release the button the system registers a phantom click within the next second or so. I also have noticed these phantom clicks after middle clickling. Does this sound like a possible driver issue or should I go ahead and call to have a tech come out and replace parts?

Answer:TrackPoint clicks on its own

@nibs,Try uninstalling UltraNav, reboot the laptop then install it back and see if it helps. If problem persist then I guess its time to contact the techs.

Hi all! The new s430 just arrived, containing some annoying problems :/ . One of them is the following: The Touchpad and the Trackpoint are not working at all. I can t de/activate them in the Win7-system-control. The drivers are up-to-date. Could it be a driver/software-problem? Greetings,Bvbnudel

Answer:No Touchpad and Trackpoint

Hi Bvbnudel, Touchpad and Trackpoint are indeed different components, there is a little chance that will fail altogether. I would suggest re-install UltraNav driver and check with antivirus programs. For further assistance, please kindly contact local lenovo.UltraNav driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) and XP (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPadhttp://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS019164Worldwide Support Center phone list for ThinkPad, ThinkCentre and ThinkStation systemshttp://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=PD008370Fred

Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

Answer:Trackpoint Issues

Well, I got the problem fixed... I just restarted the computer one more time and the trackpoint started working... Odd. Anyways, I'm glad to have it back.

My husband has an IBM 660e and yesterday the trackpoint started going crazy. It shoots off in any direction when you try to click on something. He has tried reinstalling drivers and nothing seems to work.

He needs suggestions before he goes as crazy as his trackpoint has gone.

Thank you in advance
