Lenovo T440 - Network cable not detected

Question: Lenovo T440 - Network cable not detected

Hello,If there is somebody who could help me with this issue, I would really appreciate it.I have recieved at work a lenovo t440 notebook, everything worked fine, untill one day I noticed that I cannot conect to the internet via lan cable. I plug in the cable and it is not detected. I checked the cable to another notebook and it was working. I have a Intel Ethernet Connection I218-LM controller, I have re-installed both network drivers from lenovo and intel websites and nothing helps. I've tried as well to get automatically from windows update, no result. Went to bios cheked if the lan connection is enabled, everything was in place. Is there anything I missed? I noticed a weird behaviour, if I connect through wireless network, after sometime the lan connection is established and I can use it, but without wireless connection it doesn't work. Any suggestions what could have caused this issue?Thank you,Mark

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've spent hours looking everywhere for a fix, but unfortunately without success. I have a Lenovo T440 (clean Win10 Installation over DVD) where the connections over Wifi works but not with the network cable. When I connect the Network Cable to the Lenovo T440 there is the message "Unidentified Network". No internet access. The Network cable connections is working on several other machines, just not with the Lenovo T440. Im also not able to boot over network. All devices on the machine are up to date, except:In the device management, there is shown the following device with error "Intel(R) Active Management Technology - SOL (COM3)" (Device status: The device can not be started. (Code 10). Any suggestions what could have caused this issue?Thank you!

A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken

Have been receiving these messages almost constantly on my windows 10 Lenovo g500 amid almost continuous wi-fi disconnected, If anyone ca help at all, I'd be immensely grateful. The troubleshooter resets the adapter, but that only works for 30 secs sometimes.

I ran a Ip config if that helps at all, and will perform any other actions needed. I'm really not that immersed in PC diagnostics, so all help is very ,much appreciated!

Hi, I had a problem with my windows and had to reset my laptop using one touch recovery. Once laptop is recovered with windows 8, i have installed all the windows updates/driver updates. Everything is working fine, but my LAN cable is not getting detected. When i use the same LAN cable on a different device, it works. So, i think LAN cable is not getting detected in my laptop. Can you someone help me on fixing this? Thanks,Siva

I can't get my network card to work when plugged into the wall. The computer detects the card and all but I can't get it to detect the lan cable, and the card doesn't light up. At first I thought maybe the cord port was jacked but I was messing around with it and at one point my laptop and the PC/network card were connected and it lit up. Can't get internet that way of course. I can also get it to work from PC to PS3, I can successfully transfer files through FTP.
What's going on?

By the way I'm at a university. There's no modem or router for me to reset or anything like that. And yes the actual cable works, and so does the walljack I'm connecting from, they both work with my laptop. I've tried plugging and unplugging, using different cables, resetting the cmos, doing a system restore point, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, no changes. It's a brand new card, and it never worked.

I mean it would be one thing if it at least detected the cable and the internet didn't work, but for it to detect the cable when plugged into anything except the walljack when I know the walljack works, the cable works, and the network card works to at least some extent... I've never had a problem like this before. I could reinstall Windows 7 but, I dunno, I have a feeling that won't work.

No problems are detected in the device manager. ipconfig /all gives me a media disconnected for everything.

Hi, I have a T440, less than a year old. The problem I'm having is that sometimes it doesn't detect when I have headphones plugged in and therefore it doesn't play any sound through them. I'm sure it's not the headphones because they always work with every other device I have, and this issue has happened with multiple sets of headphones with this computer. It happens fairly randomly and has always been fixable by restarting the computer, but I would like to know if there's a way to fix it without having to restart all the time. This is my work computer, so I often put it to sleep rather than shutting it down to preserve work and open programs. The problem only occurs when waking from sleep, and only >10% of the time. This has happened pretty much since I got the computer, and it's not the only Lenovo with which I've had this problem. I previously had a W530 with the same issue. Thanks!

Answer:Headphones sometimes not detected T440

Update: I think the problem was related to hot undocking. I stopped hot undocking and the problem appeared to be fixed until I downloaded the most recent sound driver from the Lenovo website (trying to fix a different problem) and now this problem is much much worse. Now the headphone jack never works, even after restarting the computer multiple times.

Hi, I have pretty much tried all available drivers from the Lenovo downloads section (Alcor/Ricoh, diagnoistics etc). I tried ot manually install the driver via Device Manger using th IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers however it doesnt accept the Ricoh drivers (stating it needs 64 it drivers). What can I do? It's a bit silly that there is no clear solution or patch for this even though it seems to be a very well documented error for users. Finally, even as Admin I cannot seem to turn on  my Windows update. Can provide screenshots - someone please help!!!

Hi, recently i bought from ebay an thinkpad t440 20B7-S0FV11 i5 4300u with 8Gb of RAM and 500Gb hdd. This laptop came without front battery (internal), it just came with the external one so i bought one internal battery on the internet and put it myself on my laptop.I press the reset button on the button of the laptop and turn it on.The issue is that windows (and also ubuntu) didn't recognize the battery. Windows say: "battery not detected"!I already update BIOS and everything and the battery still not detected.Initially, i thought that the battery was damaged but i charged it directly from the external battery, plug it inside of my laptop and turn it on. The laptop still not recognized the battery (and did not charge it neither), and windows says: Battery not detected! But the laptop work without external battery and charger, just with internal battery! (despite that not charging or detected) So i thought that the lithium cells are probably ok.I want to know if it's a battery problem, some lenovo firmware on battery (since battery came from china) or some problem with laptop!Thank you all.(sorry for my english)

Hello, I've just bought a second hand T440, and windows 7 tells me that battery #1 is "missing" (battery #2 is ok).If i take out the external battery while in BIOS or Windows, the computer shuts down, so I believe it's not a driver issue. My BIOS is up to date (2.29), set to default configuration.Do you think it's a hardware issue? Thanks for your helpPierre

Answer:T440 - Internal battery not detected

I think whoever you purchased this second hand laptop off of removed your internal battery. that would just be too **bleep** funny if that were the case. "I don't think it's a driver" LOL no your battery is missing! read the error message agin!  LOL  Hey at least you benefit from the reduced weight! LOL Always buy new or certified refurbished parts

Something is wrong with network cards in LENOVO B5400 - Windows 7I bought few B5400 machines and on all of them I'm facing network connection problems. It looks like network card dissapearing and sometimes restart making it working again, sometimes I have to remove battery to make it working again. Never had similiar problem with any other laptops. Is there any solution to get rid with it.

Answer:LENOVO B5400 - cable network dissapear

Hi Przem,
Welcome to Lenovo Forums.
Firstly, confirm whether Network card is a Wi-Fi card?  If right click on it, then Properties, then Details, what are the Hardware IDs?  That should help confirm what device it is and hopefully help find the right driver.
I hope this information is helpful.

Hello, I got a T440 with an already installed windows 8 on it.Now i bought a new samsung ssd 850 evo and installed it.I started the windows 7 installation with an usbstick and went thought till I have to select the targeted hard drive. Here I got nothing shown up.In the BIOS I have no hard drive option like information or AHCI mode etc.In the config menu there are just a few menu oints like Network, USB, Keyboard, Display, Power, Beep and Alarm and Inter Smart Connect Technology. I have already reopend the notebook and unplugged and replugged the new ssd. nothing changed.Do I have to install drivers or change something in the BIOS? BIOS Version is 2.27. thx for helping

Answer:Lenovo T440 - new ssd is no showing up anywhere

In the BIOS, you should see the drive under STARTUP/BOOT. If you cannot see it, try putting your old drive back to be sure you didn't break anything. The new drive could be DOA

T440 shuts off in:WindowsBIOSPXEThis happens if the AC Adapter (tried multiple) is plugged in, not plugged in. I've also un plugged the internal battery, same problem happens. I've tried new RAM, resetting CMOS connection, no SSD. It always shuts off. I've noticed that the CPU fan comes on right at power up but shuts down after and am not sure if this is normal or not.  Any ideas?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T440 and the batteries are showing battery error in the Power Manager. I am unable to update my BIOS to see if that will solve it and my batteries don't seem to be eligible for a Firmware update. My Warranty is also expired. Anyone have any suggestions? error is showing up on both batteries  (Front internal and rear removable). Laptop works fine when plugged in but will not power on if it does not have a charger connected. Batteries don't charge at all (With or without it being powered on) All suggestions welcome. Would prefer not to have to get a new battery set as these ones are relatively new and shouldn't be throwing this error. I do not have a spare Thinkpad I can test the batteries in or that I can test a known good battery from.

Hey Guys,I'm trying to hookup my Thinkpad T440 to my HDTV via a displayport to hdmi converter, than a regular hdml cable from the converter to the TV. The video works fine, but the audio has been an issue. Just doing some cursory browsing of the forums, it seems like there are a few things at play here, mainly 1) problems with individual converters, and 2) whether or not the laptop itself supports audio passthrough over the displayport. So my question is this, before I start buying different converters to see if it works, does the T440 with integrated Intel 4400 graphics even support audio pass through over the displayport? That piece of information does not seem readily available anywhere I look, especially for this specific model number (not the T440s). If so, anyone know which converter is giving people the best luck? Thanks for the help.

Answer:Lenovo T440 and Displayport Audio

As a quick addendum to the post (I didn't see an edit button), to summarize I understand that audio will be passed through if the laptop supports it. Thats the response I found in other threads.I am specifically asking how to find out if my laptop "supports it" (aside from buying random cables just to try and cross your fingers), which is the T440 Thinkpad with integrated Intel 4400 graphics. Thanks!

What is the recommendation for running windows on these laptops. Windows 7 or 8? Im running windows 7 and see alot of instability and freezes. I downloaded lenovo update manager for any critical updates. So all drivers are up2date. Im just wondering whether windows 8 will be better? The laptop is top spec i7 8gb ram so im baffled on why I am getting poor performance by just doing minimal tasks (opening word documents, excel , skype).

Hi Nishen,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system freezing on your ThinkPad T440.

Check if there is any virus in your system, you can use Microsoft security essential to scan.
Run Lenovo Solutions Center and run hardware scan to verify if there is any hardware issue in the system.
Boot the system into safe mode option and check if the system freezes in that also?
Perform clean boot option.

Hope this helps.

Hi all, recently I bought Lenovo t440. How long should last battery (s) in this laptop in normal or power saving use with screen at 65-80 %? I know this laptop have two batteries , and both of them are 3 cell right ? Extended battery have 6 cell, which I don't have, but might I would  buy it . I noticed my both batteries last max 3,5 hours max 4. This is from I what know - slightly short.  Before I buy some of this batteries I would like to know which one is maybe fault, or worst of them. Maybe is faulty inside battery, maybe plug in one.  My battery indicator in win 8.1 shows both bAtteries ... It seems windows recognize capacity or remaining storage from both of batteries in same time,or, should I say, it seems my laptop is running on power from both of them in real time... Maybe laptop should drain batteries one by one ? Ok, if this is normal, let's skip it     main question is still, how to check each batterie health / or one by one in mY T440  to see which one is maybe faulty or less good, for potential replacement ?   thank you all

Hey, just tried to install an SSD drive into my T440 today and had to change the boot priorities in BIOS. Wasn't able to do so as it is asking for a password (and for the fingerprint first), and if simply pressed enter - it goes into BIOS but won't let change anything.Obviously I can't remember what the password is otherwise I wouldn't be typing here. Oddly enough it recognizes my fingerprint (thanks for that), but still need a password (?). Any solution? Am I missing something here? ThanksVictor

Answer:Lenovo T440 BIOS password reset

The only "fix" is to remember the password, otherwise you need to replace the motherboard

Hi all, I have a problem with the Fn key on my T440. It appears that the Fn key is hijacking the entire keyboard and doesn't let go regardless of what I do. I have toggled and played around every option in the bios including enabling/disabling FnLock, Sticky Fn, and Ctrl/Fn swap to no avail. The way the Fn key is hijacking everything is as follows. ESC key *always* toggles Fn lock on its own, so I don't have an ESC key at all. When the Fn key's light is off, the keyboard (alpha and num keys) don't type anything, but it seems like the keys are sending keycodes which should be sent when combined with Fn. In other words, when I press the 's' key, for example, I don't see anything typed, but a 'OneDrive' window pops up instead. This tells me the hardware key is fine and is getting pressed, but the computer assumes the Fn key is pressed *at all times* even though the Fn light is off. This happens with every key on the keyboard. Additionally, if the Fn light is off, the F1-F12 keys work as F1-F12 keys, which is expected (even though, at the same time, the alphanumeric keys don't work as expected). And if the Fn light is on, the F1-F12 keys initiate their special function, again, as expected. I can toggle Fn light by pressing only the ESC key, as mentioned. I have also installed every driver on the face of planet that is related to my model from lenovo support site. Nothing helps. I'm now typing this with a usb keyboard plugged into the laptop. This seems to... Read more

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440. I have replaced the trackpad with an older style trackpad, after putting everything back together it seemed as if everything was fine, but then I noticed that the delete key, PgUp, PgDn and PrtSc were not working. Note, the delete key does not respond even when I'm in the BIOS. I find it very hard to believe that I've damaged the keyboard and thus the functionality of some keys has been lost, I have examined the connecting ribbon cable and connection socket carefully, they are undamaged and free of debree. Can anyone give me any other suggestions? An external USB keyboard works fine.Delete Key doesn't work in BIOS.

The pc ethernet port has worked 100% up to this point. I'll just tell you what happened, Somehow, the tip of the speaker connection managed to get stuck in the green port.

After reading about what to do online, i opened up the pc and managed to open the back of the sound ports and push out the tip with a paperclip. But when I started up the pc again the ethernet cable wasent being dectected.

I've tried the cable out with the laptop and it works 100%, i've also tried a different cable into the pc and that isint being detected either (works 100% with laptop).

The drivers should be upto date. I had to remove the power supply cables from the inside of the computer to get at the sound ports , maybe i didnt put them back right? What cable controls the ethernet port?

I'm a bit lost, the lights on the lan port dont light up either.

Any ideas?

Hi!  3 weeks ago, I bought a new T440 laptop. It is one of those that have the buttons for trackpoint users painted on the touchpad. Because I prefer the trackpoint, I've disabled the touchpad function, so now it is only used for left- and right-clicks. Unfortunately, in the last week or so, the left-click function has become poorer and poorer. Sometimes it works with the first click, but often I have to click twice for something to happen, sometimes even 3-5 times. When it doesn't work, I have to use some force and not just click, but rather hit the touchpad with my thumb. That usually gets the click through. But it's time consuming and annoying, because I never know how many clicks it will take to open anything. Right-click seems to be working fine, but I also don't use it that often.  I have 3 years of warranty on this computer, but I bought it in Estonia, as I was visiting my family for a week. Now I'm back in Germany where I study and I'm not sure I can use the warranty here.... Right now, the only solution would be buying an external mouse, but I have to be mobile with my laptop and a mouse would be a nuisance anywhere other than at my own desk.  I would be very thankful for any ideas on how to solve this problem or even just for information on what might be causing the problem.

Answer:Lenovo T440 left-klick not working properly

Hi Mariam, welcome to the forums,
you can check your international warranty entitlement on the following site; I'm pretty sure your T440 will be covered in Germany because the systems are also sold there.
The other alternative would be to simply call support and request assistance.  Tel. 0800-500-4618  Mon-Fri 08:00-18:00

Hi everyone, I need some much needed help with this issue.  I have a Lenovo T440, brand new, out of the box fresh that I setup for a user in my office.  Here are the following steps that I have completed so far:  -- Upgraded the RAM to 8GIG--Transfered over user profile using WET (Windows Easy Transfer)--Applied Updates --Installed Symantec Anti Virus Protection  The 1st set of problems after I initally setup the unit. The laptop had issues with Windows updates were it would just hang constantly during the update process, mostly during the "Preparing to Configure" part. What I did was remove Windows Security Essentials and afterwards the updates ran without a problem.  The 2nd set of problems started happening today. The laptop is docked to a native docktng station, but the monitors will turn off and on again. I searched these forums and found that it may be a driver issue. I will try this solution out later today.  The 3rd set of problems has to do with Outlook Home and Business 2010. The user sometimes cannot see e-mails in the "Reading Pane" and sometimes he cannot get the BCC feature to show the Global Address List. Also, his keyboard will stop working while trying to type an e-mail.  The T440 that is being used right now is actually the 2nd model that I have received, because I had to RMA the 1st one. Does anyone have any insight into these issues? Much thanks in advance.

Answer:Lenovo T440 Multiple Issues, Outlook, Displays

Greetings, On your 2nd issue what information did you find about driver issues?  I have 7 new t440P laptops and one is having problems with dual montiors when using a lenovo pro dock.  My laptops are built from the same image so I don't understand why I have not experienced the problem elsewhere.  Windows 7 - 32 bit The user describes it as the monitors shutting off briefly or doing a deguass.  It happens randomly, on both monitors at the same time and doesn't seem to be a problem when un-docked. I have yet to actually see it happen myself. I've tried diagnosing it as a hardware problem and have done the following so far: Flipped the VGA and DVI cables on the orginal LCDs.Replaced VGA and DVI cables on the orginal LCDs.Replaced the orginal LCDs with new LEDs.Had user remove additional USB devices from machine.Replaced the dock.Moved the hard drive from the orginal t440p to another t440p.Replaced the power supply to the dock.Replaced power strip everything is plugged into. After each step the problem happened again. Currently I am trying to run a extension cord from a different power source to see if that has any effect on the issue since I have not been able to resolve the problem as of yet.  I have not done anything with drivers or software since that didn't seem like a productive road to follow. Device driver info: Inter HD 4600, ver:

Hello everyone.Be happy to be part of your community, but not to happy to create my first post because of some problem my notebook is causing.I bought a "new" lenovo, (it's not new, actually it was made in august 2014, but first time opened in january 2015.) thinkpad T440, but from the very first time, it causes me pain in my eyes. As a 15,6" laptop user, I thought, the problem is that it's smaller display so my eyes need to adapt. But after 10 days of pain, i thought that 10 days are enough to make my eyes adapt for such display. Next what i thought was that my previous laptop Ideapad Y580 resolution which was FHD 1920x1080, is bigger than one i have now (just basic HD ready 1366x768), is causing me problems for my eyes. Again, not true because I tried to work on some other laptop just to try which were HD ready too, and no problems detected. After that, I started to google a little bit and I found, that it could possibly be, that PWM is causing me an eye strain. Well, something about it can be true, because as i put my display to full brightness, i was feeling more relaxed on eyes, than when brightness was lower. I recorded screen on mobile and I was able to evidently see that there were "grey" stripes refreshing trough display (lower the brightness, the bigger the stripes). But I was not able to find anywhere, that this model T440 can cause such problems. Even on notebookcheck they say:"Lenovo uses pulse width modulation (PWM) for the brightness control of the reviewed dis... Read more

Hello Last night I pushed the power button to turn off my laptop and now when I start it up, it takes me to the blue screen for a few seconds then to a black screen telling me to choose a start up option. No matter what option I choose, it will go to the blue screen and then cycle back to the black screen. Any suggestions on what to do?

BSOD happens periodically when I clamshell my new laptop.
I've followed other threads and am attaching the file generated a log file (attached).

I've installed the Lenovo tools and updated all drivers and bios.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Lenovo t440 BSOD after closing the lid (hibernate selected)

The BSOD blames the driver to Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260. Can you update it? It seems that the Intel? PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth? technology for Windows 7* 64-bit (WP) and Intel? PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows 7* will work for you. Try to install ithose.

Also free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
Click on the Start button
Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus and the touchpad driver SynTPEnh.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.
Report us for any further BSOD after doing these two.

Our company is in the process of upgrading all our Windows 7 clients (x200) to Windows 8.1, but have run into a strange issue on our new Lenovo ThinkPad T440 PC's. They seem to lose network connection shortly now and then. This results in several issues like: - Office 2013 programs crash when working witt documents on the network. (Outlook 2013 crashes if using .pst archive files on network shares.)- Printers are displayed as unavailable. (Need to restart Print spooler, before it realises that the connection has been reestablished) We are using ThinkPad 3.0 USB docks, if these might be the cuase? The eventviewer is pretty silent in most cases when users experience the connection loss, but can the following 3 messages tell anything? - The speed of processor 3 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report. - The user account is in a different forest than the computer account. The processing of Group Policy from another forest is not allowed. Group Policy will be processed using Loopback Replace mode. The scope of the user policy settings will be determined by the location of the computer object in Active Directory. Answer:T440 + USB 3.0 Dock = Loses network connection

First and foremost I would abandon those ThinkPad 3.0 USB docks.  They worked horrible in our environment, not only with peripherals not getting recognized, but laptops would not get a wired IP address when docked unless the user rebooted.  We also have NAC and the ThinkPad 3.0 USB docks also had NAC issues I don't know if it's an option for you to get rid of those docks and go to a standard docking station scenario, but as pretty as they are, and small and space saving as they are, they just never worked right for us.  You would think a Lenovo dock with a Lenovo Laptop and a Lenovo Keyboard and a Lenovo mouse would work well together, but no. Good luck,

Ok so have a Dell Inspiron laptop that is running on Windows XP and I am unable to connect to the internet. This happened a little over a week ago suddenly and everything that I have tried has been unsuccessful. I connect to the internet through an ethernet cable that plugs directly from the wall to my computer, however I cannot get internet because my computer is telling me that a "Network Cable is Unplugged" when it clearly is still plugged in. I have tried using different cables and in different rooms of my apartment, and yet I still have the same problem. My other roommates are not having any issues so this lead me to believe there is probably a problem with my computer. My computer skills are on a basic general knowledge basis so I have no idea how to begin to attack this problem. Strangely enough, in my attempts to get on the internet, I turned on my wireless connection which displays a full connection in the icon at the bottom of my screen at good or excellent quality, yet when I open firefox or explorer (the browsers I use) I still have no internet. I am not sure if this is an indicator of the same problem I am having or just a separate issues, but I am in desperate need of help. So please if you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

I apologize if the answer to this Q has been posted somewhere, but I looked 'til I went cross-eyed, and I couldn't find an here goes. [Btw: I love cross-eyed ppl; my grandma is cross-eyed!]

As stated in my title, my internet connection is Xplornet fixed wireless. The connection from the tripod on the roof into my house is via a network cable. This is where my problem lies. I am quite sure what else to do, because I need the modem along with the router for my setup...apparently... [NOTE: The following explanation is a result of me following the instruction through my Belkin router setup assistant...the setup stops when I cannot get past the first step ]

Since my Siemens SpeedStream 6520 external modem's primary input [for the internet connection] is for a DSL cable, I am basically screwed. Is there such thing as an adapter to plug a DSL cable into one end, and a network cable into the other end so that I can plug into this 'IN' port? All of the other ports on the modem are for network cables, of course, but they are 'outgoing' ports...

Answer:Xplornet fixed wireless, using a network cable [not a DSL cable]...I can't hook it up

How would you go about testing a Crossover cable with something like this it would report it as being bad, so could you plug something like this Cat6 Crossover Adapter into the cable tester and the tester would show good if the crossover cable is good?

Answer:Testing Crossover cable with cheap Network Cable tester

I'm not sure it would report the cable as bad, per se, since the description for the unit says it will identify cross-connects, which is what it would detect with a good x-over patch cable

Hi, I have a brand new Dell Precision Workstation with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I have not been able to connect to networks or the internet. It does not recognize that it is plugged into the network/internet via an ethernet cable. The computer has a Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet adapter which appears to be detected and running normally. However it says "network cable unplugged" even though it is fully plugged in. Does anyone know of a solution or what the problem may be?

Answer:Network cable unplugged message when using ethernet cable

Is that your only connection? What is your network setup? Are you running through a router or a switch?

Try another cable. That one may be bad.

Since last night, my LAN connection has been giving me the error "Network cable unplugged." I have tried swapping the cable with another, swapping the ports on the router, restarting the router, power cycling the router, turning off the router and my computer and then turning them back on, and nothing has worked.

My computer has two network connections: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and a Hamachi network, which the computer is using (but not getting Internet on, of course) - I assume because it isn't giving a network cable unplugged error. This is the network controller that comes on my Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P motherboard, and it has the latest driver from the manufacturer's site (7.6.820.2009). In the device manager, it says that the device is working properly. There is a green light under the ethernet cable on the router, but not where it attaches to the motherboard (I can't remember if there was one before or not, though).

The Realtek Diagnostics Tool says the following:
IP Address
Connection NAme: Local Area Network
Link Status: Disconnected

It has a tab for Cable diagnostics, which says the following (Pair/Length/Status):

1-2 0 Normal
3-6 115 Normal
4-5 0 Normal
7-8 191 Short

When I run diagnostics, Register, Mac Loopback, PHY Loopback, IRQ, and FIFO all pass.

Here is what ipconfig/all says:

A new problem arose. When I boot up I get a message before Windows XP starts. "Primary IDE channel. No 80 conductor cable detected." Things I've done: 1. swapped the cable with a new one. 2. used a shorter cable. 3. checked that all the pins are straight. Strange thing is that the machine works fine apart from: On IDE 2 I have CDRW drive and DVD drive. These do not detect when a new disk is put in. If I click on them in Explorer I get "Please put a disk in drive x:"I have tried these drives every way round with the same result: If a disk is in when I boot up it's fine. Problem is when I put in a different disk while the machine is on.I'm sure these two problems are related, but HOW?Any ideas??

if the ide is listed in device manager, right click on it and select uninstall, reboot and allow windows to automatically reinstall the driver, should the old have become corrupt.

I am networking my house and about to go out and buy everything.

I currently have An ADSL 4 port router (10/100) that gives me Internet connection to my three computers on my first floor. I want to give the computers on my second floor access to the network and Internet, I was just wondering on what type of cables I should use.

As I only have one port left I was thinking of buying a hub that would be on my second floor (this would also mean I would only need one one single cable running from downstairs to upstairs). Now should I be using a normal Cat5e network cable to connect the router and the hub or a crossover cable?

From the hub on the second floor I would then connect the other computers I have using normal Cat5e network cables.

Does all this make sense?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Crossover cable or Normal network cable?

you would use a normal straight through cable to connet the router to the hub. You only need a crossover when directly connecting two pc's.

I was wanting to know if it was possible to use standard 4 core telephone cable as network cable? All the rooms in my house have telephone extension boxes on the walls conected together with standard 4 core telephone cable.I read that only 4 wires are required on a network cable so rather than run CAT5 cable round the house, could I use the redundant telehone cable instead?

Answer:Can I use 4 core telephone cable as network cable?

Only if you're happy with a network running at 10-16mpbs tops. That's all 2 pair CAT3 is capable of.

Hello, Tech forums.
I was recently given a perfect new desktop, which was given away to me as the owner couldn't connect to the internet and was frustrated. (He's well off financially anyway)
The problem is that:
It doesn't detect the etnernet cable.
The cable definitely DOES work, as I am using the exact same cable to connect on another computer, all other computers in the house can connect to the internet and can connect via said cable too.
The "solutions" I've tried, but to no avail are:
Restarting the computer.
Updating driver via removable media after downloading from another computer

However, this one worked.
Device manager > Network adaptor > Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet Properties> Advanced > Speed & Duplex > change value from auto to 100mbs full duplex.
I could go on the internet, everything was fine.
Then i left the computer for a few hours as I was busy, then it wouldn't turn back on so I force shut it down.
The problem is back, however the solution that worked before doesn't work anymore. I've tried setting it back to "auto" as well.
I've tried restarting multiple times.
However, it still doesn't detect the ethernet cable.
Please help me tech forums. Thanks for reading

Answer:No scanner detected and that a I need a WIA cable

You may have a little trouble, as a "WIA cable" does not exist.

WIA drivers, yes.

I hope that better drivers exist. (TWAIN, perhaps.) The WIA drivers I've seen have had limited features.

disabling/re-enabling the device
i am connecting using 'Realtek PCle Family Controller'
The modem is a D-link

First, update your drivers. Either thru your driver CD or by downloading the latest and copying and installing using a USB.
If all done and still issue, check in your DM whether the network adapter has no issue.

Hey everyone,

Since I'm on a campus, I'd like to download shit with a real nice speed, but the only problem is, when I connect my ehternet cable, it won't connect or something. If I go to the adapter settings, it says that the wireless network connection is fine, but the local area connection has no network cable (but in fact it is plugged in in the right way etc.)... So, I don't know if I need to update my drivers? And if yes, I don't really know how, so I hope anyone can help me...

If I need to post any screenshots or anything, let me know..

(Oh maybe an additional 'problem' , when I go to cmd and type ipconfig /all, I keep getting those messages "media disconnected" don't know if that's a problem or anything? maybe there's a simple solution )

Thanks in advance!!

If i remove the cable and reconnect it anytime after windows has booted up, it isnt re-detected. I have to reboot the PC to get it detected.
I have other PCs which detect the same Ethernet connection without reboot, so its obviously not the Routers problem.
I think i might have switched of some Windows network discovery service by mistake.

I think you mean ROUTER instead of modem(?) You can connect only 1 device to a modem.

What fixes the problem? (modem reset, router reset, pc reboot)
"my LAN cable from my modem" => you mean the cable between modem and router?

One of my Windows 7 computer has been getting an error for 24 hours that the ethernet cable is not detected and it can not connect to the internet. Other Windows 7 computers on the same router/internet connection work fine.

I have already tried the following all of which were not successful.
-Plug in a different cable.
-Reboot the computer.
-Disable and then re-enable the connection.
-Restore to a previous system point.
-Inspect the connector for a problem with the pins.
-Look at the device manager for problems.
-Work through the windows troubleshooter.

The device is described as a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet, although it does not appear to be a separate card and looks to be built into the motherboard. The Motherboard is Alienware 04VFW2 version A02.

Any help is appreciated.

Having done all those steps, particularly if you tried a known-good cable and known-good port (i.e: unplug one other computer and plug that cable into the non-functioning machine), I would say that the machine has a failed onboard nic.

...unless it's some how disabled in BIOS, but I don't think it's possible if it's showing you.

Hello, I recently reformatted my parents' computer to get rid of a nasty rootkit that I couldn't seem to clean off otherwise. After installing XP Pro, it did not seem to recognize the cable modem/router setup I had going previously, i.e I plug the Ethernet from the router into the back, and nothing.

This is my first time reformatting a PC, and after fiddling with the Windows Network Setup and such wizards, had no luck. I have seen recommendation of using a CPUZ program to show information, I have attached a .jpeg with the computer's information on it.

It is an older Dell model, if that makes any difference.

Here is the .jpeg, if anyone can point out any downloads I need from the intel site or otherwise, it would be much appreciated.

Any other advice to get the internet up and running on the computer would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:After reformat, cable modem not detected

Here's a link to the download page for that model:
Drivers & Downloads

You should need sound and chipset. Use Everest to find out what all you have onboard (LAN, graphics, etc) and Google for the drivers for them as the manufacturer will have newer drivers than Dell will.

Today an issue popped up with my network connection, when I plug in an ethernet cable to my laptop, it still shows as no cable detected. I have a Dell Insipron 1750 with a Marvel Yukon 88E8040 ethernet controller.

It's not a cable issue, as I plugged it in to another computer and it works just fine.

It had the latest driver available for it. I uninstalled the controller and let Windows detect it again and use an older driver but it still has the same issue.

The real complicated part of all of this though, is that I'm trying to connect to my work network. The ethernet cable is plugged directly into a jack on the wall, not into a router or modem directly.

Yesterday, the internet for the entire building went down. I reset the modem and the Cisco box and that corrected the issue for all of the computers except for mine, which I did not test last night.

Can anybody offer any insight into this for me?

Answer:Plugged In Ethernet Cable Not Detected

Could be a bad ethernet controller. How old is the laptop, is it under any type of warranty? If under warranty, Dell could replace the controller.

I had that happen on an old Dell laptop, which I use wireless only.

I'm trying to connect an internal, powered SATA HDD to the eSATA port on the back of my motherboard.

To do this, I bought an eSATA to SATA cable.

Unfortunately, no matter what I do, the drive is never detected, not even by the BIOS.

So, I bought another cable. Same problem.

Finally, I tried moving the drive and the cable to another computer. The HDD is not detected there either.

So, either I am making the same mistake on both computers, or both cables are faulty..

I really don't know what else to do.

Answer:eSATA to SATA Cable - HDD not detected

What are you using to power the hard drive. The esata cable is a data cable, the hard drive needs power too. If you are using a powered esata port, they usually will power a 2.5" hard drive (most of the time) but do not provide enough power for a 3.5" hard drive. A powered enclosure would be best for either.

Also, if that is not the issue, go to disk management (click start, right click computer, select manage, in the left column select disk management) See if you see a drive listed in the bottom portion of the screen with no drive letter. If you do, If it is a new drive, it will have to be initialized, a simple partition created, formatted and a drive letter assigned. If it is a used drive, right click it, select 'change drive letter or path', next screen click add, and assign it a drive letter. CAUTION: If it has data on it and windows wants to initialize it and format it, don't do it, you will lose all data on it.

Recently, I took my Dell Dimension 8250 Desktop to a friend's house, and accessed his internet through an ethernet cable, which required me to change the IP settings on my LAN connection.

When I returned home with my computer, my USB mouse, speakers, and internet were not working. I system restored, which fixed everything but the internet. Now, after trying several different cables, my ethernet cable is not registering in my PC at all: the light on the back of the machine doesn't turn on when it's plugged in, the "Cable Detected" box doesn't pop up, and under my Network Connections, there is no third section where my Local-Area Network used to appear.

Please let me know what the possible errors are, especially if it is something that can be fixed in the software, i.e. with drivers.

Hi all,

So my computer has stopped recognizing the ethernet cable. Prior to this I opened up the tower to remount my video card since I had lost my visuals on my screen, it happens from time to time. So I shut down, remounted it and started my computer back up. And lo and behold the computer no longer recognizes that it is connected to the internet through it's ethernet cable. I have never had an issue with my connection before.

I checked in the BIOS and it recognizes that the port is enabled and that it is connected with the correct network speed. I looked into device manager and it is not disabled there, no error popups. I then took my install CD and tried to remove and reinstall the drivers and then restart to see if it would have any effect. Unfortunately nothing has changed. I then thought to do a system restore point and see if that would have any effect, but there are no restore points older than an hour available. Apparently my computer decided to create one for installing and reinstalling the drivers for the LAN adapter, and overwrote/deleted any older ones.

The BIOS still recognizes it, but on the desktop itself under networks, it shows that no connections are available. There is no problem with the cable, I have tried two different ones in my laptop and in my desktop. Both work fine with my laptop and for my roommates.

It is a self build, the Motherboard is an Asrock Z75 Pro running with windows 7. I also don't have a wireless card in it so updating... Read more

The cable works on a different computer, the computer gets wireless fine (typing to you from it) but will not read an ethernet cable. The motherboard manual (built the PC myself from components) says an LED should light-up if an ethernet cable is connected, no such LED appears when I connect the cable.

Thanks for any and all help.

Answer:Ethernet cable not detected, Windows 8.1

From the manual of this MB (Page 20). If there NO LED=10 Mbps data rate, 100=green and 1000=orange. Also, there is new driver for your Realtek LAN came out on May, 13. Here's the Website: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1150 - GA-Z87-HD3 (rev. 1.x)

My P30 won't/ can't detect my newly aquired Western Digitak Extreme Lighted Drive 320GB when I connect it via the firewire port. I use a 6 pin to 4 pin cable (which cost a fortune, by the way) that is supposed to be a way to connect this drive to a pc.

My ieee 1394 driver seems to be called "VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 host controller".

Can anyone tell me what to do? I really need to connect this drive by firewire because I need the USBs for other devices.

Thank you!

Answer:P30: External HD isn't detected when using IEEE 1394 cable

Hi Lars

It is really strange. I use external DVD burner (DL) using the same cable. I have tested it with several units (old Satellite 1900, Tecra M1 and also new Qosmio G20) and everything works perfect.

Check the power supply of external HDD.

disconnected my Cable Modem from my laptop, connected it to a linksys, hooked up my

desktop to it. then disconnected desktop from router and plugged modem back into laptop

then i reconnected it. I restarted my laptop to receive a new IP address. I received a

new Ip address, and it says that my Cable modem is connected, but when i open any

again with no success. i think that there might be something prohibiting my computer from

the internet. Does any one have any suggestions?

Answer:Solved: Cable Modem Detected, no Internet

For starters, try powering down the modem for a couple of minutes whenever you switch any connections to it.

hi, here's my situation:

i used my laptop since morning 10am and in the afternoon i fell asleep beside it, meant to leave it's power on so it could finish my downloads but when i woke up at 3pm, the lan connection was disconnected. the wifi connection works, and it is what im using now, although i want to fix this problem since my laptop tends to disconnect from the wifi if heated up too much

i tried the following

adjusting and reconnecting the ethernet cable
switching cat5e cables to a previously working one
restarting laptop
enabling and disabling the network adapter
checked if the drivers are up to date
switched and used a cable that was working for the desktop
connected the laptop directly to the modem(surprisingly, the modem detected that there was a port it was connected to)
system restore

help is very much appreciated

with the PC connected by cable only - can we see an ipconfig /all and a device manager screen shot

Device Manager
Post back the results in device manager
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the screen shot and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

how to access device manager for different windows versions

Hold the Windows key and press Pause key, should open to allow device manager to be seen, menu on the left hand side

Have you checked whether the cable still works or not? Also try a different router if you can to rule out the cable or your router being the problem.

Answer:Wireless Network Detected, but Internet Explorer Wont Connect to network in Win 7

Have you tried any other browsers? SeaMonkey is a good one to try if you don't have another. You can still keep IE as default and have SeaMonkey for backup for web pages that may not display correctly in IE or when you have access problems like you are having now. Being Mozilla-based, it uses a different rendering engine. For those web sites that support pipelining, you may also find that it is considerably faster.

Check your connection settings under Internet Options. In the LAN section, try toggling the "Automatically Detect Settings" option.

Hi, Have a problem there, Just reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows XP and WAS having problems having my Linksys 802B wireless card but now it finally detected.. just reinstalled the driver. Now another problem is.. when I double clciked INternet Exploroer, webpages dont load up. A box pops up tp ask if I want to workoffline or Connect. I click on COnnect, and the box then said " No connection to the internet is currently avaiable." The thing is that my wireless adapter is already connected to the DSL in perfect signal connections.

I then went to to Network COnnections folder, There are 3 icons, one says Incomming, the other 2 in the LAN or HighSpeed Internet section says 1394 Connection, and Wireless Network Connection Enabled. On the far left column, i clicked on Create a New Connection. I clicked the option of " Connect to the internet" , then "Setup my Connection Manually.". Then " Connect Using a broadband connection that is always on." .. because I dont need a login name and password. After clicking NEXT and Finished, ..nothing happened.. i clicked on IE again, and same thing pops up. I tried doing the 2nd option to let u enter the ID and password BUT disable the prompt to log in with a username and pw.. still dont work.
What gives? How do i fix this problem? Any help is appreciated. thnx.

I've looked around quite a bit to find a solution to my problem and am out of luck.
I will start this off by saying my computer has run perfectly fine for a good three years. Earlier today there was a bad storm that caused a short power outage. Upon regaining power, I booted up my computer to discover that I am unable to connect to the Internet on my computer alone. My phone can connect through wi-fi, my Xbox can connect through an ethernet cable. My PC is the only one with the issue. I have tried different ethernet cables, but none are recognized. The LED does not light up in the back.
I've tried all remedies that have worked in the past for me, when it comes to loss of connection. Below I will try to provide images captured by my phone (sadly cannot provide screenshots) that may, hopefully assist.

Answer:Ethernet Cable not detected. Local Area Connection not visible.

Hi DrewO,

Looking at those images, your computer has connected fine, you're just not getting the signal from the outside.

Please could you list the way your computer connects to the internet, for example:

MY PC > Ethernet Cable > Router > Modem (Phone Line)

Also please could you go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > See Full Map - Screenshot this and upload it. Post back with your results.

I have a Maxtor 40gb ATA133 hard drive set as a slave yet it detects as ATA100 via a 40pin wire which doesn't make sense, it should only be UDMA33.

Any ideas why this is happening, the reason I ask is the system is a little unstable which is probably due to the speed mismatch.

I am experiencing a problem with connecting my laptop to an external monitor via an HDMI to DVI cable.
I have an Inspiron 7566 Gaming laptop. I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. Laptop details here
When I boot into Ubuntu it all works fine, but when booting into Windows the external monitor is not detected. I can only assume this is because the audio is also sent through the HDMI and its causing some kind of conflict.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Does anyone know a way of stopping the Ethernet adapter disapearing when a laptop is on Battery on the T60 ?. I have tried configuring the Adapter Power Management to not allow the computer to turn off the adapter but this seems to be ignored. I have also been over the BIOS and cannot see a setting to stop the adapter being disabled. Is there anything else anyone can think of to stop the adapter being disabled ?. This is really only a problem because a software vendor has decided to use copy protection that gets a key off the network adapter - and this piece of software is mainly used when the laptop is on battery.

Hello, I'm currently experiencing a new problem with a customers machine. Its Local Area Connection under network connections flips between the 'enabled' state and 'Network Cable Unplugged' I've went through the line and confirmed its plugged in and the ports lights are blinking properly.

I'm unsure whats causing the problem, but have a feeling its either a windows networking service or the driver. I'm tending to lean toward driver since it connected fine yesterday and downloaded 800MB of updates. I have tried re-installing the same driver that i used yesterday to get it on the internet, with no success.

Device manager says there's nothing wrong with the Ethernet driver, but it does list another ethernet controller, although I'm pretty sure that it is the wifi device, which I haven't been able to get its driver to work either. The computers model is an "HP Pavilion DV7-1245DX" it is running a fresh install of Vista Home Premium 64bit.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Network Connect flips between 'enabled' and 'Network Cable Unplugged'

Have you tried manually setting the port duplex/speed?

For this to work you need to be able to specify the speed/duplex on both ends of the connection (i.e. at the switch as well as the machine).

XPS M1730 internittant problem - machine crashes and will not reboot. Diagnostic error code 2000-0411.
After a couple ot tries it restarts.
Keyboard backlight has not worked for a long time - Fn rt arrow does nothing.
Any ideas? Could be a cable is not seated properly but I'm not anxious to pull the machine appart.

Answer:Error code 2000-0411 Keyboard backlight cable not detected

Sorry to hear about the troubles.  The following link gives details on the basic diagnostics.
The code 2000-0411 means a possible failed hard drive.
I suggest reseating the hard drive.  Disconnecting the drive and reconnecting it. Here is a link from the service manual on removing hard drives.
<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
Once reseated and try diagnostics again.  If it gives the same error you will need to replace the drive.
