synaptics unreliable trackpoint middle click bug

Question: synaptics unreliable trackpoint middle click bug

I found a software bug for synaptics driver. I am using the latest: 18.0.7.40, 5/26/2014, windows 8.1. The bug is related to unreliable middle clicking (not to be confused with TpScroll ), when the user middle clicks on the trackpoint, the OS doesn't register it. It is possible this is a settings issue, maybe it's a "feature". If so, can someone provide instructions on how to change it. It seems the synaptics firmware will only pass a middle click to OS if the pointer moves at the same time. I have not tried this on Linux. To reproduce errant behavior I (this will NOT register a middle click)1. make sure middle clicks are enabled in the mouse properties and TpScroll is off2. make sure you have an application that works with middle click or displays L/M/R click state received by the OS (I am using X-Mouse button control)3. with finger clear of trackpoint, middle click with thumb4. OS will NOT register a middle click.correct behavior should be register a middle click To reproduce errant behavior II (this will register a middle click)1. make sure middle clicks are enabled in the mouse properties and TpScroll is off2. make sure you have an application that works with middle click or displays L/M/R click state received by the OS3. with index finger on trackpoint, move trackpoint so pointer moves slowly (speed not important), and the middle click with thumb4. OS WILL register middle click.correct behavior should be register a middle click To reproduce errant behavior III (this will cause a continuous middle click, until cursor is moved again)1. make sure middle clicks are enabled in the mouse properties and TpScroll is off2. make sure you have an application that works with middle click or displays L/M/R click state received by the OS3. with index finger on trackpoint, move trackpoint so pointer moves slowly (speed not important), and the middle click with thumb and hold down, lift index finger off trackpoint to stop moving cursor, and let go of button. (Pressing and releasing the middle button has no further effect.)4. OS WILL register a continuous middle click, never receiving that middle click input changes.correct behavior should be middle click is released as soon as the physical button has been let go. Also mouse chords (for example left click and right click at the same time) do not work.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,I recently got a Thinkpad T440s and I have two problems when using the trackpoint:1) When trying to right click, I like to hit the uppermost part of the trackpad (where it is slanted). However, this registers as a left click. Is there a way to change this (and if not could someone explain to me the rationale behind this)?2) Is there a way to enable middle clicking without 3rd party software? So far, I have only found this thread which suggests using TPMiddle. I just wanted to ask if that's still the way to go.Thanks

Answer:T440s: Trackpoint + right click and middle click

Did you experiment with the settings in the "ThinkPad" tab within the Mouse Properties dialog? (Tap <WinKey>, type "mouse" and choose the Lenovo UltraNav item that is found.) I've noticed that if both TrackPoint and TrackPad are active, it tries to intelligently swtich the location of the right click for you .. but not always what you had in mind!

I recently got my T400, and installed the newest synaptics driver Now the middle-click on the trackPoint doesn't do middle click anymore (i.e. open new tab in firefox)What's worse is that everytime I click the middle button, my screensaver comes on.The left and right click seem to work fine.  This didn't happen before I installed the synaptics driver.I need the synaptics driver so the TackPad can do scrolling, but now this! This is extremely annoying. anyone else have this problem? I'm running on Windows XP Pro, 2.53GHz, Camera, Fingerprint, Bluetooth.

Answer:TrackPoint middle click turns on my screensaver?!!

Hello,I just fixed a similar problem. Like you, I found that my middle button no longer functioned like I was used to when I updated my system. If you go into the synaptics settings, under UltraNav>Track Point, make sure you select "Neither" in the box labeled "Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function."I hope that works for you.

Hello, Im having problems with the trackpoint on my T500 Thinkpad, thats possiby only 3 weeks old. Everything was fine for a while, but then one day, everytime I tried to use the trackpoint the cursor switches to the middle click icon and refuses to move, unless I use the USB mouse plugged in or use the track pad. I can move the cursor with the trackpoint if I hold the middle button down, but other than that the trackpoint is useless Ive uninstalled and reinstalled the driversIve done the above and included the ultranav utility for good measure Nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi again.

Can I configure the clickpad in a way that the two-finger tap emulates the middle (or mouse wheel) click instead of the right click.

I can't seem to find it among the properties of the clickpad.

Thank you very much

Answer:Satellite L50 - Synaptics touchpad: two finger tap - middle click

Hi

The Synaptics touchpad can be found in
Control panel ? mouse ? last tab ?Device settings? ? ?Settings? button-

(the tab and button name could be different)

If the mentioned option isn?t available in the Synaptics settings, then the option isn?t supported

I want the middle click on my Ultranav to behave like a middle click on a physical mouse does, where pressing down brings up the windows scroll thingy and makes me be able to open links in new tabs and close tabs. I don't see an option to do that. How can I change it?

Hi, I just bought the Lenovo Helix with Windows 8.1 and I've been trying to disable this auto-scroll or touch-scroll function that comes on by default on UltraNav. On my old X220 with Windows 7, I can just go to Mouse-> UltraNav -> Settings -> Neither on Scroll / Magnify Features. It seems like there's no way to turn it off for the Helix. From this discussion, http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Carbon-X1-Use-middle-scroll-button-as-middle-c... It sounds this option isn't available yet on Windows 8. I've tried older driver: No option to disable this feature.I've tried Synaptic driver: I can use middle click but the touchpad is ultra sensitive and I can't adjust it. Has anyone found a solution for this? I use the middle click a lot for openning new windows and pasting on linux screens. It makes the computer usable unless I have a mouse.

Answer:How do I change Middle Click to normal Middle Click instead of the Scroll on the Helix

you can't with the new touchpad/trackpoint system in the Helix, or the subsequent laptops that have the same trackpad design.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Hello all

my first post here, so be gentle.

So I would like to change the behaviour of the 'scroll' button above the trackpad so it has the function of the middle mouse click.

So in other words: the button marked on the picture should act as middle mouse:

Link to image

I searched the UltraNav options but could not find what I was looking for. As far as I could find, this button can only be used to scroll (in combination with the red button).

Thanks for your advice on this matter.

Hi - I buy Lenovos because of their trackpoint.  My most recent Lenovo is an X1 Carbon.  I was much surprised to note that the X1 appears to be the first ThinkPad that will no longer allow me to turn off the touchpad from the Mouse Settings.  Never mind - I disabled it for good in the BIOS.  (I would like to have the Mouse Settings back because I occasionally allow touchpad users on my laptop and they simply cannot cope.) Anyway, from day #1 of ownership of this laptop, I noticed some very odd behaviour of the trackpoint:  It simply "wanders off".  It likes the left margin a lot, and the top left corner still more.  It is possible to force the cursor out of this position (by pushing hard against the trackpoint) but as soon as I let go of the trackpoint again, it wanders back. Thing is, the problem will go away after a while.  "a while" may be anything between 10 and 60 secs.  I thought it might be a h/w bug - the trackpoint perhaps being "stuck" and needing to relax - but it occurs so often that I am more inclined to thing it is a driver bug. I believe to be on the latest driver 19.3.4.99 so consider this post as a heads-up - something is still not quite right here. PS:  I am not a geat fan of reboots.  So I have disabled Updates on my Win10Pro.  I was most recently forced into a reboot (first time in 3 months or so) because whenever I clicked the middle mouse button, my screen would turn off.&nbs... My W530 seems to have developed a creaky middle trackpad button. Just pushing down on it in most places in a normal way now produces a pretty audible creaky sound. Does anyone know any fixes for making it, well, creak less? Thanks!

I also have this issue with the right side of my finger pad where my right palm rests and the bottom right corner of my keyboard. There is a very noticeble creek when any slight pressure is applied. It was fine when I bought it new and now there is this annoying creek noise where my right hand rests. Can anyone shed some light on mine and ctenorman's issues with this creek noise?

I have a T510 that I got a  couple of months ago, and I have been using the Trackpoint middle button for scrolling in Firefox, until a couple of days ago when this feature  inexplicably stopped working. I've tried restarting my computer, making sure the Trackpoint settings are set to enable scrolling, updating my drivers, but nothing seems to be able to bring it back. Has anyone else had problem like this (where the Trackpoint scrolling unexpectedly stops working) or know of any other reasons for why it would stop working?

Answer:Trackpoint Middle Scroll Not Working

Are the processes SynTPEnh.exe, SynTPHelper.exe, and SynTPLpr.exe running? Advanced UltraNav features fail to work if these aren't running. You may have disabled them in MSConfig or another startup program cleaner. Does hitting the middle button trigger the conventional middle mouse button?

I am not a fan of the new "clickpad", I'm a long time ThinkPad user so my pointing device of choice is the Trackpoint (eraser).  I've set the control panel on this for "Trackpoint Only", and at least the virtual buttons are useable now.  HOWEVER... the "middle button" seems to be stuck in only the "scroll" mode.  The latest control panel doesn't seem to have an option to set it as "normal middle button" - it is just doing this scrolling thing.  I would like to set the middle click action to a regular "middle click", not scrolling.  Anyone know if there is a registry key or some other way to do this, and not the scrolling thing? Thanks!

Hello, Is there a way to have both - scrolling with trackpoint while holding the middle mouse button - and - being able do a middle click with the middle mouse button? I can accomplish this easily under Linux like it is described here. But under Windows it seems to be impossible. I can only have either middle clicking or trackpoint scrolling. I need both.  If anyone knows a solution to this please let me know. Walter (I have a X200s and Windows 7 x64 installed)

Answer:Trackpoint scrolling AND middle clicking

Yeah, this is easy in Linux can't we get some pressure to actually get this implemented properly in windows. Useability is the main reason i got a thinkpad it would be nice to know we could actually influence it in some way. (Bumping an old topic here)

Forgive me for cross-posting, but quite a while ago I asked this on the ThinkVantage Technologies board here and have only gotten "Me Too" adds to the thread. I'm hoping ths board and its moderators may be more responsive. I have the latest Synaptics driver V.16.2.5.0 dated 7/5/2012, installed via System Update on a T520 running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I prefer to disable the TouchPad and only use the TrackPoint. No matter where I disble the TouchPad, either in the context menu of the notification icon or in the Control Panel Applet, the TouchPad  is always re-enabled on a clean start or re-start. I have manually uninstalled the driver and re-installed the driver to no avail. Since others are having this problem, I was wondering if a fix is in the works.

Answer:Synaptics TrackPoint Driver Does not remember settings.

Yeah I'm having that too with the same driver but on T420s with Win7 64bit Pro also.Fully update etc.

I just got a T500 to replace my dead R51. One of the things I really liked about my old Thinkpad was that I could use the middle trackpoint button as a third mouse button, which is great for opening links in new tabs in Firefox or copy/pasting in console windows. However as far as I can tell the only options in the mouse configuration are "Scroll", "Zoom", and "Neither", and neither just disables the button entirely. I should mention I'm using Windows Vista. Does anybody know how to fix this?

I guess I need to stop installing drivers...  I unstalled the latest Synaptics UltraNav drivers for my X1 yoga today as advertised by System Update (Thinkvantage and companion).  Now it's super-finicky, difficult to scroll on the trackpad, but even worse I can't set the middle button on the trackpoint to scroll anymore!  It just resets to "middle-click" in Lenovo Settings.  I'm a bit beside myself because now I have a yoga that does not yoga (touchscreen does not work after updates) and now I can't even consistantly scroll  I tried to uninstall it as per the readme that came with the update but that does not even work, complaining that a dll file is not a valid windows application.

I usually use the trackpoint(red button on keyboard, I think it's called the trackpoint) to move the cursor, and use the buttons below it to click. When I first got the computer (An R60), the middle button below the spacebar was a great way to scroll, but then one day it stopped working. Whenever I would push the middle button, the trackpoint would freeze and only scroll (The buttons on either side of it still worked though.). The only way I could move the cursor was by the touchpad or by turning the computer off and starting it back up. I tried going into the mouse settings and fixing this, double-clicking the middle button when it froze to see if it would stop, but nothing worked. I finally gave up on it, but I thought I might ask here to see if anybody can help me. Does anyone have a solution to this?

When using a wheel mouse with SketchUp, pressing the wheel allows to orbit the drawing. But when I use the trackpoint, pressing the middle button zooms in/out. How can I change the behavior to be like a wheel mouse? I tried changing TP4table.dat, adding the line *,*,SketchUp.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9 in the 'Pass 0 rules' section, and restarting SynTPEnh, but this didn't cause a change. I also have a ThinkPad USB keyboard with trackpoint. The driver files seem to be under "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint", but I can't find TP4table.dat there, so what is the solution for this?

Okay so i've been struggling to find a fix to this and Lenovo support hasn't really been too useful either. Basically the trackpoint is having issues working even with the newest bios, etc. and synaptics driver. It also is having problems with the old driver too?? Could it be in conflict with the new bios update? Lenovo Support gave me the advice to reformatte as it is a "software" issue and to repeat the same above process. Yet the problem still persists.  What steps should I try next?  Lenovo support seems reluctant to give me a hardware exchange Thanks in advance, any advice is open to testing! I'm just fed up with new drivers having bugs like this.

Hello, I updated my OS to Windows 10. Everything works perfectly except of trackpoint/touchpad. The first issue is really a critical one - trackpoint buttons are practically useless. Single button click causes the mouse click event multiple times - for example opens 6 new cards in a web browser instead of one. I've found another post here describing in detail exactly the same problem but the author didn't get any response, neither from HP nor the community: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Elitebook-8570w-built-in-mou... The driver delivered with Windows (which is also listed as compatible with Windows 10 on HP's 8570w support site http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5257503&swItemId=ob_152050_1&swEnvOid=419... version 19.0.12.0, causes the problems I mentioned earlier. The updated one from Synaptics website (19.0.19.1) additionaly prevents the OS from detecting the middle button... Additionally, the only gestures I can use are the basic ones - no advanced 3- or 4-finger ones (please don't tell me that the hardware is incompatible because similar gestures worked on Windows 8.1 I used earlier). I have a dual boot with Win10 and Linux and on Linux everything works flawlessly, so it's definitely not a hardware problem What should I do to make my touchpad and trackpoint fully functional?

The middle trackpoint button of my keyboard stopped to work (it has to be pressed very hard). I took picture of it showing what exactly was broken.   Notice that the black plastic part got separated from the base metal plate causing the middle button stopped to work.I just want to share it because it might be a quality issue. I contacted local Lenovo service and got a new keyboard replacement. Unfortunately it is different (compatible) part number. The new keyboard 45N2219 has much more soft feel than the old one 45N2149

Last night (4/6/2017) an automatic Windows update just now decided to install the most recent Synaptics driver (titled Synaptics - Mouse - 1/11/2017 12:00:00 AM - 19.3.4.66), which apparently is nearly 3 months old at this point.  One thing this update seems to have fixed is an issue I?ve been having with my ThinkPads for upwards of 7 years ? randomly it resets my mouse wheel 'number of lines scrolled per notch' option back to 1 (I prefer 3) pretty much daily, which is a HUGE annoyance, so I?m very grateful for this update and I?d like to keep it. However, it also completely disabled middle click scrolling with my TrackPoint (yes, I have ?Use for scrolling? checked under the TrackPoint settings).  The middle button does nothing now, unless I check ?Use as middle click?.  Rolling back the Synaptics driver to the previous one fixes this issue. Confoundingly, the TrackPoint scrolling with my ThinkPad Bluetooth keyboard still works fine. As it stands the t440s is unusable for trackpoint users. Clunking the clunkpad is stressful both physicall for repetitive stress, the sound is psyhcologically stressful, and it is even annoying my coworkers. The driver update today Feb 28th does nothing to resolve the main problem, which is that there is no tap to click option for trackpoint users. You have to thunk and physically click when using the trackpoint. LENOVO, are there plans to fix this?

Answer:Are the plans to allow trackpoint tapping to click rather than clunking to click on the clunkpad?

Better yet, allow a trackpoint click to be registered with pressure rather than an actual tap. This would be ideal and maybe even better than the previous physical buttons.  Tell me this is coming and I won't return my t440s. It looks feasible, linux developers are implementing in their t440s driver.

Trackpoint + dragging is still not working with the Ultranav middle button as of 16.2.19.2 driver. It's an extremely important function for any 3D graphics program. With the Lenovo driver it's not possible to use the middle button + trackpoint to navigate in these programs! Lenovo, please fix this bug. It's working perfectly if I install the latest Synaptics driver. It's only happening with Lenovo's driver. Using Synaptics driver is not an option, because it has no guard against keyboard typing + touchpad accidental clicking. Test:Testing is very easy.1. Set your middle button behaviour to "None".2. Above an empty area of your desktop, click the middle button + try to move the mouse pointer with your trackpoint. The pointer isn't moving! It's the same thing what happens in any 3D graphics program! You cannot navigate your camera, unless you use an external mouse! Fix:Please fix it. Just don't stop the trackpoint pointer when someone clicks the middle button in "None" settings. System: Using a W520 for the reference.

I purchased a T440s a few months ago. Suddenly I am unable to right click on my touchpad in order to open drop down menus, where they are available,or to right click while highlighting text? I manage to do this if  I click on a specific spot around the bottom, middle of the touchpad, but this takes a lot of fiddling around in order to get the precise spot that happens to work.  It is certainly not a practical solution.  Does this sound like a physical hardware issue, that I need to bring my laptop to the depot for, or might this be something else that can be addressed within my settings or some sort of update?   Has anybody else had this specific problem?   Thanks!

Answer:suddenly right click not work on t440s touchpad, only awkward middle click

For the sake of troubleshooting, I should add that when I connect a mouse it works fine but, of course, this too is not a practical mobile solution.  A response from someone from Lenovo on this site, in particular, would be appreciated.

Today I used ThinkVantage Update to download system updates from Lenovo.Optional updates included "Synaptics UltraNav Driver for WinXP and Win7- WW-" version 15.2.14.0which was downloaded and installed. Now the trackpoint icon in the notification area is gone.Clicking on the Mouse section in the Control Panel brings up an error window:"Synaptics Pointing DeviceUnable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver pleaseuninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button. You thenneed to reinstall your pointing device driver for your external device again.Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics driver now?Yes / No"Clicking on No takes me to the usual looking Mouse Properties window, with 5 tabs including "Pointer Options".Clicking on that produces the normal Motion, Snap-to and Visibility subwindows. But the Trackpoint tab is now gone. The trackpoint still works fine and the trackpad is now on and also works.(Before all this happened, I had the trackpad turned off.)Why has this happened? How can I get the trackpoint icon back in the Notification Area? How can I get control back over the trackpoint motion, whether or not the trackpad is operational, middle button scrolling etc?Anyone got any ideas?

Answer:X201s - New Synaptics UltraNav Driver has removed TrackPoint icon from Notification Area.

I think the driver failed to install properly. Uninstall and reinstall the package.

When I right-click using the touchpad on my T440s, it registers as a left-click. I have reset all my Synaptics settings to their default values. I have rolled back my Synaptics Pointing Device driver to the previous version, which is now 19.0.17.2. I have rebooted. The right-click still registers as a left-click. Left-click also registers as a left-click, and I confirmed that I do not have the "Switch primary and secondary buttons" option selected. I'm stumped as to what I can do next. Note: This has nothing to do with a two-finger tap. That doesn't work either, but I'm talking about a physical depression of the widely and appropriately maligned disaster of a touchpad that came with this laptop (and has since been dropped from new Lenovo devices, thank goodness). I've also fiddled with the Synaptics settings for "Enable top button" and "Enable bottom button", and that doesn't help. As a workaround, I have used AutoHotKey to map my Right-Alt button to emulate a right-click. This works, but is rather clumsy compared to an actual right-click. (Info on how to do that, in case you're curious: http://superuser.com/a/195168) This problem started while I was using a standalone ThinkPad keyboard, plugged into the laptop's USB port. When I'm working for a long time, I like to put my laptop up on a stand, so the screen is directly in front of my face; this avoids the neck strain of bending forward to look at the laptop screen. I have a standalone ThinkPad keyboard that si... Read more

On my brand new Thinkpad L540 the right-click did not work reliably: sometimes it would get the drop-down menu required but mosst of the time it performed a left-click - very annoying! However I stumbled on a change that seems to have solved the problem: I disabled the middle button. Here's how:Control Panel | Mouse | ThinkPad tab, then unmark Enable Middle Button.

Answer:Right-click unreliable - one solution

Press the start orb button in the left hand corner.
Type 'Mouse'.
Now choose 'Mouse Properties' or something similar from the search results.
Now open the 'ThinkPad' tab.
Change 'Pointing options' to 'Classic TrackPoint Mode'

Note that doing so will disable the touchpad, but you will be able to use only the TrackPoint. Generally the TrackPoint is easier to use. You will manage to use the TrackPoint in several days. Then you use the TrackPad only for clicking as shown below.

Hi all,

I am working on a project for elderly and people with disability. The project is on "re-adjusting" a normal computer mouse. Some of these folks can not double-click, nor hold the left-click down for dragging files/folders. I found the following codes for changing the middle-click to left-double-click. One is written in C# the other in CPP.

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/MBtn2DblClick.aspx

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cpp/MBtn2DblClickVC.aspx

This program would be very handy for them.

Regarding the 2nd part, what I am looking for, should work like the following:

1. Move the pointer on a file/folder
2. Press and release the Middle/Wheel Click
3. Move the pointer and it moves/drags the file/folder.
4. Press and release the click again and the pointer releases the file/ folder

This should work for the Windows environment. Does the description make sense?

Does anybody know if such a code has been written?

Thanks,

-Farzad

At certain relatively slow speeds the scrolling jumps huge leaps regularly (probably after evey page or so). It's very bad with Chrome and Windows explorer, not so bad but noticeable in Thunderbird. I have set the scrolling to 1 line. My Synaptics drivers are the newest 10/04/2015. Also the treshold to start scrolling with middle button and trackpoint is very high - can't be that hard to make it smooth, so you could scroll very slowly? Please fix this soon... it's impossible to live with.

I had thought that there was an issue with my right click and middle click hardware for a while, because when I depress the right side of the touchpad my mouse doesn't right click, and the middle click only works when I have a finger on the red nub.  Lenovo has checked it twice and insists there's no hardware issue.  I'd like to be able to right click when I depress the upper or lower bit of my mousepad, but I can't figure out how to change drivers to do it. As a note, I can get right click to work by depressing the right side, but only when I click at this one odd spot about 1/3 of the way from the bottom right corner.  Depressing the right corners doesn't do anything. Any help is appreciated.

However, the Ultranav options are different for the W541, so, (as far as i can tell) i can't find the option to replicate this.

Hi all, I have an E540 and Windows 8 (I also have Linux and the problem doesn't happen there, its just in Windows 8). I can use tap to click when I navigate with the trackpad. However, as soon as I start using the trackpoint, I can no longer tap to click. When I go back to using the trackpad, tap to click starts working again. I've tried fiddling with the settings in control panel, but haven't found anything to change it yet (tap to click is checked there)

Answer:Tap to click not working when using trackpoint

Hi Gibba,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with Tack pad on ThinkPad E540.

Please go to control panel -- mouse ? UltraNav ? Track Pad setting and Check the box Enable press to select option.
If you are unable to find UltraNav option, the you have to install touchpad drivers for that.

Click here to check the track pad setting.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Question: middle click

I'm pretty new to modern versions of Windows and new to this ThinkPad (X1 Yoga). The middle button used to change my pointer into a scroll of some sort which I never figured out how to work.  Now it seems to do nothing?... maybe that'll change after a reboot ... who knows (hooray Windows). Anyway, how can I make this a middle click?  I'm used to middle clicking links to open them in a new tab.

We are starting to Roll out the T440s laptop. We are running into issues with the Trackpad like everyone else. It appears that if I want to use the Right-Click button in the upper corner I can only do so if I am using the Trackpoint. If I use the trackpad and try to Right-Click in the upper corner it does nothing. If I use the lower corner it works 50% of the time.If I use the Trackpoint and the upper right corner it works. However if I use the lower right it does not. Is there a way to change the behavior of the Trackpad/point so that I can use either the upper right and lower right at all times? It's going to be a pain to train users to use only the bottom or top depending on if they are using the Trackpad/Point.Thanks!

Answer:T440s Top Right-Click only works with TrackPoint

Hello.

I initially had this experience with my first Clickpad equipped machine, which was a T440s, and since I am a die-hard TrackPoint enthusiast, I simply disabled the touchpad in BIOS. It worked fine like that for me, but when I got my Helix, I decided to tinker with it for it to better suit my needs, and what I did was to make the right click areas bigger in the UltraNav config utility (Control Panel -> Mouse -> ThinkPad tab), and select Large in the button size.

After I did this, my whole experience of the Clickpad changed to the better, so I've enabled the touchpad again on my T440s, and the device is just superb to work on now. Sometimes I actually find myself using the touchpad, tapping (two finger tap for right click) and gestures specially, which I hardly ever do on my older ThinkPads.

Screenshot of my settings.

See if this helps you out.

Question: Middle mouse click

Hi. I have a Pavilion Notebook running Windows 10 and it has a clickpad.  How can I replicate a mouse middle button click?  I've gone into settings and there is no way to change the actions of a 3 or 4 finger tap. They are set to launch Cortana and the Action Center, respectively, and there are no dialog boxes to change the settings. The 3 finger flick will only switch between Windows and Task views and the "click" setting only lets you set the size of the right button click zone.  There are not dialog boxes for the 3 finger flick or "click" to let you change anything there, either.  I want to keep the 2 finger tap as the context menu.  Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! KJ

I cant find any reg hacks or something to change the hotkey in windows 7 for when you middle mouse click a file or folder and then when you move it somewhere and release it it asks to move it there and stuff.... my mouse has a sensitive middle scroll thing so when I scroll sometimes it'll click and a file/folder will magically move to other folders and it fucks up everything...

In the middle of my screen, there is an area where you cannot click or do anything. The mouse will move there, but you cannot do anything within it.

Its just like a square in the middle.

When I'm on the internet, I have to move a text box or a link or whatever it is, to the side or the top or bottom so I can be able to click on it.

Any idea what could cause this?

Just got a Y450 and I can't find a way in the Synaptics software that allows 2 button middle click. Using Firefox, I close and open tabs all the time. On previous laptops I could set it up so that clicking the left and right click buttons at the same time created a middle click, which opens and closes tabs. Any workarounds? Thanks

Answer:Two button Middle Click

For some reason this feature is not enabled on the y450's touchpad.  I have read that Synaptics is phasing this feature out, but that was thirdhand so it may not be reliable info.  Anyhow, there is a program you can download: http://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll/ It enables two-finger tapping (rather than using both buttons) to function as the middle click (open/close tabs in firefox), as well as two finger scrolling, and is quite customizable as to which features are enabled and tied to what mouse behaviors. I should mention that I'm not associated with the project, it was simply recommended to me elsewhere on the forum when I brought up the same lack of middle-click support.

Answer:Middle Click Freeze

Try updating your UltraNav drivers to the latest. The issue was resolved in a driver update. However, the latest one does seem to leak RAM with touchpad usage, so the alternate solution is:Press Fn+F8, hit Manage Settings, go to the UltraNav tab, ope n the TouchPad settings, and find the PalmCheck entry.Turn this down one step at a time until the freezing goes away.

Hi.  I recently purchased a HP Pavilion DV7 4053cl laptop with a Synaptics "clickpad".  I love the computer, but miss the ability to middle-click, especially when browsing the web.I've looked through all of the clickpad settings and done some registry poking around.  Is there a way to assign middle-click to some area of the clickpad, perhaps the upper-right corner?  I'm comfortable using the registry editor. Thanks!

Answer:clickpad middle-click?

This is a huge problem for me too (I need it for work besides for the web).  The closest I've come is by having tap be left click, the left button be middle, and right button right... I've picked it up quickly but others using my laptop might be confused.  What they really need to do is add a 3rd button zone on the line between left and right... Also, you can CTRL+LCLICK to open in a new tab if that's all you need it for.

Hello, Yesterday, my CTO Yoga arrived. I absolutely love the device, it's fast and well-built. No problems with the digitizer whatsoever. The only thing that bothers me is the touchpad: Although it works fine most of the time, the middle click doesn't work like I want it to. It works for scrolling, but I am not able to open a new tab with it in Firefox for example. Tested with Firefox, Aurora and Google Chrome. Closing tabs isn't possible either. It just does the scroll function, but I want it to do a "real" middle click. Is that possible? EDIT: I also tried updating the Synaptics driver via the Lenovo System Updater. No luck though. Disabling gestures didn't help aswell. The three-finger-gesture for middle clicking works, but it's somewhat unconvenient. I'd prefer the "real deal". Oh, and I'm talking about the Thinkpad Yoga.

Answer:Middle click on the Yoga

the middle button in the new integrated Trackpoint/trackpad design can only act as scroll.

Hello,

Lately I have noticed that my Synaptics pointing device keeps disappearing from the Notification area (Next to the clock)
And when this happens my mouse starts doing the whole tap to click!

So what i have to do is type mouse in the start menu and open it back up to start the synaptics mouse options.

I've also tried updating the driver, it just says I have the most recent driver already installed.

I don't know why it keeps turning off and disappearing from the notification area.

Answer:Synaptics Mouse keeps turning on tap to click

Hi Scott,

I've got the same model laptop (HP DV6) with exactly the same problem.

Cannot access the mouse properties without first doing a system reset but even after that's been done the tap function (which I hate) soon returns and I lose access to the properties again, thus preventing me from turning tap off from the control panel.

I also get the following message as the reason for when the mouse properties stops responding via control panel:

'Windows shell common dll not responding'

Henry.

Hello there. A few days ago I noticed that i cannot do the right-click with two fingers on touchpad as I used to do till then.Every other multitouch option works perfect as before (scrolling, rotating, enlargeing), but this one. I reinstalled synaptics driver with the one I got with laptop, and other one I found online. Both drivers doesnt solve my problem.Already tried this CLICK, but this stands for another model, and there's no "2FingerTapPluginID" in there for me.Does anybody knows some other way to get it to work again? And more: now i cannot get back to old driver version. In 17.x i cant turn "sliding cursor" on (there's no option), and i CANT get back to 16.x because everytime i reboot pc, it automatically immediately installs 17.x and asks for another reboot. I cant use the pad without my cursor sliding, i got used to it too much. Im rebooting my pc for 2 houts now, swearing on it by the time, can anyone help me PLEASE before i throw it out the window?

Other than the dropping wireless I get randomly when doing a large download from the internet, the only other issue I have with my 1 week old Helix now is that default bottom right corner "right click" box.  The properties of the driver allow you to make the box larger or leave it at the default smaller area, but they don't allow for complete removal. I've been googling my butt off, and found some threads in a few places about it, and had been hopeful about one that mentioned a registry entry for button4, but having tried what it recommended (changing the value) it sitll is there.  Since I have it set to use a two finger touch for right clicking, this just interferes with my normal operations (although the 2 finger click still works fine at least). Having come from Macbooks since 2009 (I transitioned to them from Tablet PC's becuase I loved their trackpad) I am used to being able to click with my thumb anywhere and have it be a left click.  This is especially important when it's on my laptop and I'm trying to drag something, when my thumb naturally will fall on the bottom right of the trackpad becuase of the angle my right arm has to the keyboard. Has anyone with a Helix managed to come up with a way to remove this right click area completely? Thanks for any help John

So I recently purchased a new laptop that has Windows 10 installed (Acer Aspire E5-573G) and I would like to change the way the touchpad taps work. Specifically, I would like a middle click from a three finger tap. It's an ELAN touchpad, if that makes any difference, and I have installed the latest drivers.
Everything I looked up on google said to either use some program from ELAN, or to edit the registry. There currently is no program installed on here from ELAN, and all the google results I could conjure up while looking for a download for the program are people wanting to get rid of it. The only thing in my programs and features from ELAN is what I believe is the driver - "ELAN HIDI2C Filter Driver X64 13.6.3.1_WHQL"
The suggested registry edit also isn't available for me. That is to say, the path "HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Elantech" does not exist.
I'm not sure what the correct way I should be going about this is. Everything else regarding the touchpad works as intended, but I have no way of customizing it beyond the settings in windows. And since I have zero interest in having Cortana or action center being on my computer let alone as mouse commands, those settings are completely worthless to me.

I have recently installed windows 7 Home premium X64 version, brand new clean installation(installed 2 days back), no antivirus s/w and no viruses or trojans either. Since the new setup, the middle button of my mouse does not respond like it used to(windows xp). Previously it acted like a normal middle mouse click, opening links in a new tab, but Now when I middle click all the windows that are open in the background gets moved to the foreground and pushes the foreground window to the background. The same thing happens whether I middle click in any browser or in another application.
These are the things I have tried :

1) Installed and uninstalled the mouse drivers multiple times.( Correct drivers are intalled)
2) Tried 4 different mice made by Microsoft(Sidewinder X8), logitech( MX performance and another generic USB mouse) and Lazer (lachesis) all with the appropriate driver and I see the issue in all 4 mice. Which concludes that it is a Windows issue.
3) The Middle button is set to middle-click in the control panel mouse settings.
4) Only other point of note is that I see 3 devices under mouse in the device manage :The first 2 are exactly the same, but appears twice and always shows up after a restart regardless of the brand of mouse I am using.
a) HID- complaint mouse (Microsoft driver : 6.1.7600.16385)
b) HID- complaint mouse (Microsoft driver : 6.1.7600.16385)
c) Logitech HID- complaint unifying mouse (current setpoint driver)

Answer:Mouse middle click issues

Figured out that a program that was installed on my machine KatMouse has a default option enabled which set the middle click to bring background windows to the foreground. Once I disabled that option, middle-click started working.

Adding this here to help anyone else who might come across this issue.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T400. Prior to the upgrade I was able to middle click to open links in a new tab, close tabs, and scroll however now when I middle click it instead brings me to "Trackpoint scrolling tips"
I have tried disabling Trackpoint scrolling but then neither my middle click nor my right click will work at all.
Is there any possible way to fix this?
I apologize if this has been asked previously on this forum, I have searched and found nothing

When I click the scroll wheel, I get a preview of all open apps, side by side. This prevents me from using Google Sketchup controls and Firefox delete tab.

I can't find this effect described anywhere so I can't change the control. I had a similar effect about a year ago after I installed Vista. Then, I would get that aero carousel thingy like Windows+Tab. It went away on its own or I changed something without knowing it. Now with W7 I got something like it back.

Any ideas on how I can remove this effect? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Middle click gives aero-like preview

Hello Sailor, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It's a bit different depending on your mouse drivers, but you should be able to change the middle button option in the Mouse settings in the Control Panel (icon views) to something called "middle button" or "middle click" instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Is there a way to emulate middle click on the touchpad on a Yoga 710? I read somewhere that a three-finger press does the job on an earlier Yoga model, but on the 710 it opens Cortana instead and there is no option to change this ..

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows 8 and ever since, I can't configure the trackpoint center button to do a middle click any more.Using the ultranav driver from lenovo (Synpaptics 16.2.19.2), when I click on Trackpoint settings, there are no settings for configuring the three buttons at all, the only thing that can be set is stick sensitivity.I updated to the generic synaptics drivers (16.2.21) and it now has options for setting the center button, but when I set it to middle click, it does nothing! I can set the center button action to anything other than middle click and it works, but not middle clickAlso I should mention, using this new driver if I set a touchpad action to perform a middle click, like a 2 finger click or other, it also does nothing. It's as if the middle click is not being recognized. But I also wonder why this setting is missing in lenovo's driver?

Hi all,

Sitting here on my work computer. For some reason, my mouse no longer opens a new tab in FF when I middle-click the link. It was working fine last week and stopped working yesterday.

I'm using a generic Logitech mouse and FF 6.0

Addons:
The Addon Which Shall Not Be Named
Checkplaces
Download Manager Tweak
DownThemAll
FireGestures
GreaseMonkey
IE Tab2
Status-4-evar
Tab Mix Plus

I use all of these on pretty much any FF installation. Not sure why it stopped working yesterday.

Middle-click to close tab still works, as does middle-click to reopen (Tab Mix Plus settings), so I'm at a loss as to why I can no longer open new tabs from links.

Any help?

Answer:Middle-click no longer opens new tab in FF

Go into the FF config options by typing "about:config" (without quotes) in the address bar. Click the acknowledgement button, then filter your criteria by "click". I suspect one of the lines you'll see is changed from its default value, which can be identified by looking for any bolded line(s).

Answer:L540 Middle click not working

Hi Androlord,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I'm sorry to hear that middle mouse button of your Lenovo ThinkPad L540 is not working.

For the middle mouse button to work, you should enable the TrackPoint in Ultranav option.

Please download drivers from Lenovo Support page. To download the drivers, Please click on "Select Product", then in "QUICK PATH" enter L540 and select the exact model depending on the MTM number of your device. All the drivers compatible for your system would be listed.

Use Think Vantage system update which will auto detect the drivers required and will install it for you.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0 and my middle click doesn't work, although my scroll does. I installed the latest Intellipoint and I even set my middle button to middle click yet nothing happens when i press the middle button. How can I make it work?

Answer:Middle click doesn't work

Hi, welcome to TSF

Has it ever worked or is this a new problem?

Try setting it to a different command, not 'middle click'. If the new setting doesn't work and the drivers and software are installed correctly, then it could be a faulty button. When you push the button does it feel like it's clicking or does it feel like it could be jammed?

What software are you trying to use the middle click in? Sometimes you have to set it in both the mouse settings and the program's options, like in games for example.

So, I just got my T540p 2 days ago, and while getting everything set up, I realize that a few things are off with the clickpad.  For a while, most clicks were not being registered: left, right, or middle.  It could take some furious clicking just to get one click registered.  Next, no matter what settings I set, I could not get middle click to register as a middle-click - they were always taken as left clicks.  And finally, I could not get right-click to register unless I set button size to either Large or Full.  At standard, right-clicks were seen as left-clicks. Here's the rub - I think I've narrowed it down to the driver.  After submitting a warranty request yesterday, I started playing with it some more, and here is what I've found: After a few full shutdowns and reboots, responses got better:  Clicks were more reliably registered, and right-clicks worked, even on Standard button size in the settings.  However, middle-clicks were still impossible.  Any attempt at a middle-click was registered as a left-click.  This was with the Lenovo driver installed. After uninstalling the Lenovo driver, middle clicks started working.  Unfortunately, mouse speed is painfully slow without the Lenovo driver installed, so this is not much of an option.  I tried downloading a driver directly from Synaptics, and that did not seem to help the mouse speed - this driver doesn't seem to add the UltraNav tab to the mouse s... Does anyone know how I can emulate/use middle mouse? On my last laptop I was able to click with three fingers on the touchpad. Is there a way to get this same functionality on the Yoga Pro 2? Solution: The following posts' suggestion to download the newest version of the driver from Synaptics gave me back triple click functionality. An additional registry edit gave me back two finger tap (right click) - because it broke when I disabled edge swipes. Open regedit by using WinKey + R, type regedit, and hit enter.Navigate to:HKEY_USERS\<SID name for your current user>\Software\Synaptics\SynTP\TouchPadPS2 For 2 finger tap (right click), right click 2FingerTapAction, click Modify, and change the value to 2.

Answer:[solved] Middle click? Yoga Pro 2

With three fingers on the touchpad, click (not just tap, but actually push down the touchpad). If that doesn't work, you need to first uninstall the default Lenovo drivers and get updated ones directly from Synaptics:http://www.synaptics.com/resources/driversAlso, if you use it for web browsing, CTRL-clicking does the same thing as a middle click.

Hi,I recently acquired a new 8 button mouse (ione lynx p3) from someone who had no use for it.  It says on the box "no drivers required for windows XP" so i plugged it in and it went through the whole found new hardware etc. and then it told me it was ready to use.  But it didn't work not even the movement.  So i deferred back to my old 3 button mouse which worked fine, or so I thought.  Now when I click the middle mouse button (using my 3 button mouse) My Documents pops up in explorer.  I've tried updating the drivers and reinstalling them but no change.  It's not so much the middle mouse button but the middle click function because in Logitech Setpoint, when I change the function of the middle button to something else (i.e. minimize, do nothing, start menu, etc.) it works fine for it's assigned function but not for the middle click function.  This is quite frustrating as I use Autocad and Revit where the middle button is essential for panning and rotating.  I run XP sp3.Thanks

Answer:Middle click opens My documents

You did make a restore point? Of course you did. Everybody does that before install of anything knew.Just go back to the point before you did that.It is in Accessories > System Tools >  System Restore.

The standard mouse drivers that come with windows work pretty well for most basic mice, two buttons and a scroll wheel, but usually you will need other drivers for advanced mouse buttons.I've got a Logictech wireless mouse with extra buttons and need Logictechs software to take advantage of the extra features.I've got a side button I've programmed for BACK and it's the handiest feature I've seen on a mouse.

Hello, I have upgraded my laptop to Windows 10. Is there a way to have a middle click? Back in 8.1, I have three finger click assigned as a middle click. Thanks

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro - Middle Click Windows 10

There are few posts and some google search results you can find that have solutions. See this one:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/solved-Middle-click-Yoga-Pro-2/m-p/1297763 You can make a registry edit to assign triple click or triple tap to middle click. I'm not on my laptop at the moment, so I can't confirm the specific keys, but they are mentioned in the thread above and at this link:http://iampaulh.blogspot.ca/2012/06/adding-middle-click-to-synaptics-touch.html Set 2 for right click and 4 for middle click for 2FingerTapAction or 3FingerTapAction for tapping. You also may need to set (X)FingerTapPluginID and (X)FingerTapPluginActionID to 0.  There's a different registry key for clicking as opposed to tapping, but I can't remember it off the top of my head and I can find it with some quick googling. It should be clear when you see it though.

Nearly every other laptop I've used has given me the option to emulate a 3-button mouse when both the left and right mouse buttons are pressed simulaneously, and this is a feature I've come to use heavily when browsing and during other tasks. How can I enable it on my ideaPad Y710 ?

I have not downloaded anything new. It seemed to have happened spontaneously. I cannot click anything on the right side of the screen across all websites, on all internet servers, and file explorer. The only exception to this is that I can click the date and time, battery, and wifi settings in the toolbar at the bottom right of the screen.

I'm dual booting with XP and 7RC1. With XP I use a program called TaskbarShuffle. It allows me to middle click on a program running in the taskbar to close the program.

In Win7, middle clicking opens a copy of the same program and TaskbarShuffle doesn't work with Win7 yet. Is there any way to change the middle mouse button's behavior through the registry or does anybody know of another program that will do it?

This is the only reason RC1 is not my only operating system. Please help.

Thank you.

Make sure you don't use it when the desktop is active or it may try to log you off.

You may be able to get one with the few more features if you request it here:
