Lenovo T430s "2101 Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)"

Question: Lenovo T430s "2101 Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)"

Hello Lenovo Community, My laptop is as follows:Lenovo T430sMachine Type: 2352-CTOWindows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Please let me know if there is any other necessary information. Problem:During startup, I receive the above "2101 Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)" error. It is important to note that this problem is intermittent. I have a 16gb mSATA installed on my computer. I've attempted to do the following to fix this error: 1. Run several virus scans - no viruses apparent2. Earlier I ran "eccmd -info" and the command prompt indicated that everything was working correctly.3. I reseated the mSATA card last night.4. Today, when I run the same command as an administrator: "eccmd -info" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------C:\Windows\system32>eccmd -ifnoExpressCache Command Version 1.0.86.0Copyright? 2010-2011 Diskeeper Corporation.Date Time: 7/8/2014 17:33:18:579 (STEVEN-THINK #0)HFS Volume is not mounted.USAGE:ECCmd [-NOLOGO][-INFO | -PARTITION | -EXCLUDE | -CLEAREXCLUSIONS | -FORMAT | -PRELOAD]-NOLOGO - No copyright message will be displayed.-INFO - Display ExpressCache activity information.-PARTITION - Create an ExpressCache partition.[DriveId] - Optional drive ID[PartSize] - Optional partition size in MB-EXCLUDE - Exclude a drive from being cached.DriveLetter - Drive letter-CLEAREXCLUSIONS - Clear all cache exclusions.-FORMAT - Format the cache volume.-PRELOAD - Preload a folder or a file into the cacheFileName - File or folder name to be cached[UsageCount] - Optional file usage count.C:\Windows\system32>eccmd -infoExpressCache Command Version 1.0.86.0Copyright? 2010-2011 Diskeeper Corporation.Date Time: 7/8/2014 17:35:46:601 (STEVEN-THINK #0)HFS Volume is not mounted.**ERROR** ECCmd Requested device is not available : 2. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Now I've run eccmd -info again and the drive appears to be working fine. So why the intermittent issue? Could there be another issue other than the seating? I.e. software conflict etc? Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Lenovo T430s "2101 Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi.  I have a T430s (original owner). At boot-up, I receive a "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini sata)", BUT I don't use a Mini SATA!! Windows 10; All drivers current via Lenovo system update (incl. bios 2.69).I have a Crucial SSD drive; I have verified Crucial SSD has latest firmware.I do not have (and have not had) a Mini SATA card installed - this is why the error is so weird to me.I DID recently change the Wifi Switch and cable (which is when the error started showing)The wires that would feed the Mini SSD are still covered with tape from the factory (I forget the colors)I have removed the battery, internal battery and power (and rebooted).  I have reseated the SSD and the DVD drive (and rebooted).I do not have Express software installed; the software that would control the Mini SATA drive (I can't see any "express" software in Add / Remove programs) Can you help me with this annoying mystery?

I got this error out of the blue the other day on startup, and now I get it every time I restart.  I have tried a number of solutions that I found in these forums (which I'll outline below) but it seems like my system just can't find the drive anymore.  Here's what I've done: 1. ran the ExpressCache program via Command Prompt (eccmd.exe -info) and got this error:  "**ERROR** ECCmd Request device is not available"2. unistalled the ExpressCache software, shut down, pulled the battery opened up the memory module slot cover, removed the mSATA drive and then re mounted it.3.  reinstalled ExpressCache4.  I'm trying to reformat the drive, but I am receiving similar errors     a.  When I try to format the drive (eccmd.exe -format) I get the following error:  HFS Volume is not mounted  **ERROR**  ECCmd Requested device is not available     b.  When I try to create a partition (eccmd.exe -partition) I get the following error:  0x10df (4319).  I looked this up and maybe there are system files missing? I have also tried this but it then says "There is NO mSATA detected, please check mSATA attached" http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT073737 If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Answer:2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

Hello and welcome,

None of the symptoms you describe sound to me like software issues. There is something wrong with the mSATA SSD, or the controller that accesses it - or it needs to be re-inserted in its socket.

Is this machine under warranty?  I'd suggest calling support and running this by them.  They may suggest re-seating the device in its socket, or may offer replacement or some other option.  I don't speak for Lenovo, just offering my personal suggestion.

I ordered the mSata mini 128GB card to go into the half size slot under thge keyboard.  However when I boot I get:  "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)".  I thought that a half size drive would work, as it does it my Lenovo W520.  However it appears the BIOS does not recognize it.  It does however recognize it in my W520. Has anyone else successfully added a second drive internally to the X1 Carbon Touch? http://www.mfactors.com/msata-mini-half-size-sataiii-ssd-128gb-64gb/

Answer:X1 Carbon - "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)"

Hello and welcome,

No personal experience here, but I do see this note on the page you linked:

Note: Only works with systems with mSATA standard connector. NOT compatible with Mini PCIe slot for WWAN/wireless cards

The way I read the Hardware Maintenance Manual  that slot is WWAN only, not a WWAN/mSATA combo slot.  Could be wrong.

HiIt seems newer drive is needed or its firmware. Chek out SSD manufacturer site for fw update.Since x220 BIOS 1.16 or something like this one, msata SSD error detection has disappeared. Except of rare cases with some Crucial (or Corsair, didn't remember) and Samsung drives. Also do not use OCZ drives.

I get the following message when I turn on the laptop: 2101: Detection error on SSD (M.2) The laptop (T560) is new and was only received on the 13 May 2016.  When it occurs I run thediagnostics and can usually get the machine to boot up. However, the error then reoccurs at a later stage, usually if the machine has been idle for a while.  I have lodged a service call with Lenovo but thought I would share my experience here and see if anyone else has the same issue?

Hi, I just received my T430 about 4 days ago and it's working perfectly until I was trying to install important windows updates. As I was rebooting my laptop after the installation (which fails everytime I don't know why), my computer gave me a loud beep and a error code of 2101 detection error. So I searched this forum and found this solution http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 from another post that had the same problem as mine.As i was following the steps,( i did cmd, uninstalled express cache, and did disk managment) but as i went on my disk management i could not find my mSATA. I have a 16 gb mSATA and it was working perfectly fine before. I've noticed on my reboot that it took longer to load and the error message would then come up.So my problem is that I cannot view my mSATA disk on my disk managementThankyou!

Answer:2101 Detection Error: Cannot view my mSATA

The Error 2101: Detection error on HDDx miniSata is a BIOS error. This has nothing to do with the operating system you have installed or any drivers. During the POST, the system does not see the miniSata drive. I (like some others) received my new T530 recently, setup it all up and then a few hours later received this error. The solution is simple. You must open up your ThinkPad. Remove the two keyboard screws and remove the keyboard and RE-SEAT the miniSata drive. There is 1 screw holding the board down. Remove it, re-insert it in. Screw everything back up and voila, no more issue. Go to the Lenovo / ThinkPad Guides and Manuals page for your device (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?) and download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your ThinkPad. There are clear instructions (for those less inclined) on how to remove the keyboard. You do NOT need to disconnect the ribbon cable. Simple / carefully slide the keyboard forward and the miniSata drive will be visible and accessible. You can also use the ExpressCache program to get stats on the miniSata drive and see how it is working. Open a Command Prompt (in Administrator Mode) and issue the command: eccmd -info   -   Display ExpressCache activity informatio eccmd -?   -  Will show you all options eccmd -format   - Will reformat and clear the cache drive. Hopefully, this will help out those out there with this issue. Hallo, Since the past couple of days I am receiving this Error 2102: Detection error in HDD2 during every cold/warm boot. It pops up even after a complete powerdown for overnight and boot up the next day. Further, the boot itself has become very slow - shows blank screen until the Thinkpad logo is displayed, followed by which the error message pops up. Thanks in advance for pointers!!! P.S: I looked up in the community for similar errors - only couple found and no solutions.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thinkpad Edge E530 - i5-3210M -upgraded 8GB RAM - 750 GB, 16GB mSATA HDD Performance Booster

Answer:Edge e530 - Error 2102: Detection error in HDD2 - press escape to continue

That error is coming from BIOS, it means there is something wrong detecting the mSATA SSD.  It could point to a hardware problem.  It is definitely not a software problem.  I would call the support line in your country, and ask what they recommend about it.

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

Answer:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

I've read a lot about the 2101 Detection Error of mSATA issue on x220 with mSATA other than intel 310 installed. Last year I purchased a W520 and an Intel 310 mSATA. They worked fine together untill yesterday. I have windows 7 enterprice 64bit installed on the mSATA and linux installed on an SSD. I have a 500GB HDD installed in the ultrabay, as a shared data volume shared by Windows and Linux. Everytime I try to boot windows, it fails. And during the next reboot, the "2101 Detection Error" shows up. To try to solve this problem I have the mSATA reseated and the 2101 error disappears, until I try to boot windows again. Everything works fine IF I ONLY BOOT LINUX. 2101 Detection Error shows up everytime I TRY TO BOOT WINDOWS UP. I've updated the UEFI BIOS to the latest version which is 1.36 but the problem is still there. I've used the lenovo diagnosis tool (bootable usb) to run a set of quick tests and no error detected (except for drive self test either not supported or not passed). Please find the configuration of my laptop below:======================================W520-4270CTOCPU:                                 I7 2720 QMMEMORY:                        16GB (4GB SAMSUNG X 4)VIDEO:                   ... So I currently have a Lenovo T430s Thinkpad and the Mini Dock Plus Series 3. The problem im having is that when the power cable is plugged into the dock and the laptop is mounted, my battery will not charge. Battery icon says "Plugged in, Charging" but i can see the battery percentage slowly draining. Usb ports, power button on the dock, secondary monitor and everything else seems to be working just fine. Laptop Charges just fine when "undocked". I initially thought it was a bad battery so i purchased a brand new genuine lenovo battery and still the same. Did an online search and cant find a solution to the problem. This all happened after I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64. Anyone know a solution? im all out of ideas.

Hi, mboon

I tried to do some research on your error, but Microsoft has little listed for a code 2101 error. Could you possibly reboot your machine at some point and copy down the error message in its entirety? With more information, we might be able to figure out a fix.

Best,

Hello,I have SSD installed into mSATA slot and 9mm HDD installed into ultrabay slot with HDD adapter. But I REMOVED the original 7mm HDD and now there is nothing in regular hard drive slot. After restart, there is a couple of beeps and error message " 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) press ESC to continue", and booting proceeds only after I press ESC. Before that there was no such error. Laptop still boots well from SSD and HDD in ultrabay works well, but this error during startup is annoying at least.Laptop Thinkpad T430s. Is there any way to disable SATA port that corresponds to HDD0 (may be in BIOS?) or any other way to get rid of the error? The HDD in Ultrabay slot is 9mm, so I think there is no way to fit it into main HDD slot. Thanks!

Hello everybody, I know that there are some other posts with this error message. But they all appear on other devices and none of them has a solution which is working for me. I got a T430s back from one of our users which showed this error (mentioned in subject) when booting. I had no no chance to enter BIOS too. 1. I copied all partitions to another SSD and replaced it => the error came up again after few days=> so I thought it must be an hardware issue concerning the internal SATA-connector2. I put the SSD in a completely new device and ordered a replacement of the mainboard because there was waranty left on the older device.3. Yesterday they came and replaced the mainboard of the older device.4. Today the user came back with the same error on the new device with the new SSD In every case it helps to remove the SSD one time and insert it again - then the SSD is detected correctly - until the error appears again after few days of usage. The only thing I did not try until now is to insert the SSD in the old device with the new mainboard. Before I forget this: BIOS is Ver. 2.52 (I see there is 2.54 available since few days, but change log does not say something important - gonna check that later and post it) Any ideas? Thx Martin

Answer:T430s - 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)

check with the OEM of the SSD drive. You did not mention the Make/model of the SSD. Maybe there is a firmware update for the SSD drive. Especially since the 430 has SATA3 interface. If its not hardware you'd need to assess what you're doing software wise in the "copied all partitions ot another SSD..." I have found out cloning can cause problems and partitions become misaligned. When I went ahead to fix the misalignment with Mini partition Manager it corrupted the registry and so other files. Various applications cannot be updated or uninstalled. I have to reimage it and not clone from the source to get it right.A quick test is to just to a base install on one of the SSD's (EG Windows 7) after purging all the partitions. Letting the OS configure, partition & format the NTFS drive. If it works after that then its not the hardware and a software issue. My thoughts anyway.

Called Crucial support.   They had me change the Intel 7 AHCI controller driver from Intel to the Standard Microsoft driver.  They suspect that the Intel driver is causing the drive to not shutdown properly.  I'll see how it performs with the generic driver for awhile.

Hi guys, I'm trying to add an additional Hard Drive to my new computer. I can see that the only way to power the drive is to connect directly to the motherboard where there are 2 very small 4-pin SATA power ports. For the life in me I can't find the Lenovo Part Number for the cable here in the UK but I've found the following cable at ModDIY - There's no part number but it could be what I'm looking for: Lenovo Mini 4-Pin to SATA Power  Can anybody confirm that this is what I'm looking for and is it available anywhere in the UK? Cheers :-)

I have a new Lenovo X240 out of the box.  I immediately upgraded with a Crucial M500 SSD 240mb drive.  The computer is running a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit. The BIOS on the laptop is the most current.  The firmware on the M500 is the most current.  It seems that every several times I start or reboot the system I receive "DETECTION ERROR 2100".  After powering off the machine and powering it on again the computer will boot to Winddows. I have seen numerous posts about this issue between Crucial vs. Lenovo.  I've tried every suggested fix to no avail.  I have tried the configuration using an identical, brand new M500 SSD with the same results.  Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for your suggestions,.

Answer:Brand New T-430 (Got it today) 2102 Mini Sata Error and Windows wouldn't update

You have a brand new system. You should call tech support and have them resolve it.A support tech can remote into your system and fix it. Also they can check for other issues which may be the cause. This save a lot of time.

I have a T430s with the NVIDA graphics card and the Mini Dock 3.  My monitor is old, and I was going to buy a new one.  However I won a 24 inch Vizio TV at a work raffle and since it's too small to use for a regular TV I thought it might make a good monitor.  I have the HDMI adapters that came with the dock. Would there be any technical issues that I should be aware of or that would present a problem(s)? Thanks for any/all help!!! GBA

I'm attempting to use the mini displayport output on my laptop to connect to a device that takes HDMI. I am using the following adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OC6LWM/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i01 When I connect it to the external display, nothing happens, and no new display shows up in the display settings. I have tried this in both Windows 7, and Ubuntu 12.10, but it still doesn't work.  What am I doing wrong?

Answer:T430s - Mini Displayport to HDMI

Hi, xur17

This issue could stem from a few causes. Firstly, have you ensured that all the hardware is working properly? Can you display an image from the computer using only a DisplayPort cable? Is the second monitor working properly, and can it receive signals through the HDMI port? Lastly, is the adapter working properly? This may a bit harder to test, but there are any other devices with those two ports, I would try to hook those up and see if anything happens.

Another recommendation would just be to ensure that the BIOS and other drivers of your machine are up to date. All drivers for your machine can be found here. The dropdown menus can be used to filter by operating system and device type.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Hello everyone,
One fine evening while watching a movie, my laptop stopped responding and in frustration I switched off the laptop by holding the power button long enough to turn off. Next Morning it showed a blue screen and a message to recover my windows, which I failed to do and by the afternoon this message showed up. Detection Error on HDD0 (main HDD) and hence forth I've been unable to install windows from a USB drive since ( and I suppose) it is not able to read my HDD. I do not care about my data at all, I just want my laptop up and running. If I can have the data back it will be perfect otherwise I don't mind not getting my data back. I know for a fact that my Hard disk is fine because I went into command prompt, diskpart , and list disk, and saw the status of HDD as healthy, this is after the error (detection error on HDD). SO my question is: Why this error? IS there a problem in the motherboard? Why the error shows once and then doesn't show the next time and then comes up again.

Answer:2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD); Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga

The error might be bad sectors, but I'm not sure. if my guessing is correct, you might have to get a new drive to replace. also you need to reinstall OS

Question: x260 Error 2101

I have a X260 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD installed connected to the normal SATA cable. Recently, the system ran down in hibernate or sleep mode until the battery was completely drained. The next time I started it up, Iwas presented with an immediate error after the logo of "2101 Detection error on SSD(M.2)". Booting into BIOSor UEFI diagnostics doesn't show any options for diagnosing the SSD. What is odd is there is no M.2 SSD. ?Right nowI am traveling and don't have a SATA-USB cable or another drive to try, but is there any possibility this is something other than my SSD failing completely? System does not boot. Things I have tried already: Reseating the SATA cable, Resetting BIO S to default settings, "Power Cycling" the SSD. All checks in UEFI diagnostics pass.

Hello, the problem was in faulty SSD drive. Seller told me that he probably got some bad series of this SSD because almost 60% of sold was not working, so I returned it and picked up Transcend MTS400 256GB which works like a charm.

Posting as a new message since my response in another thread did not elicit any response.  I have a T430s (2352CTO) with Nvidia Optimus.  The BIOS Graphics is set to NVidia Optimus. I also have the nvidia driver installed.  I also have a 4337 series minidock. According to this:  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76617 with my configuration, it MUST be possible to have three monitors (laptop display + 2 external (I happen to have a HP LA2405x and a Dell 1907FP).  It must be noted that the T430s is indeed able to detect both external monitors. However, whenever I try to configure the third monitor, it simply reverts back to the current (2 monitor) configuration. I have tried both HDMI+DVI and HDMI+VGA configurations, both behave the same (the HP is on the HDMI port if that makes a diff). Both external monitors are connected to the dock. None to the thinkpad itself.  Can someone point to: 1. The correct optimus drivers for my setup (in case that is the problem)2. The correct ports to use3. The steps if any are non-standard (i.e. using the display settings) in order to get triple display going, please?  Many thanks in advance. pvravi

are you using the HDMI through the DP on the dock? If that is the case then the DVI port on the dock is disabled. Are you using the laptop's own miniDP in addition to the DP on the dock?

Hi all. I have a 1 month old t450s bought directly from lenovo. Standard HDD and ram, decided to go with the HD+ IPS monitor (very good) and opted out on the 16gb ssd. I've bought a crucial balistic 8gb stick and a Transcend MTS400 128gb ssd m.2. I've installed everything and it was all working well with the eventual 2101 error on boot after resuming from sleep. Since my OS is installed on the SSD I've disabled the sleep mode, because boot time is less than 5 seconds. Anyway, a week ago I've started experiencing random freezes doing regular tasks (browsing, documents...). Yesterday the computer was frozen, I've power cycled it and I was greeted with a 0xc0000225 blue screen (something on the lines of file system not found).I've tried everything, system repair, changing the UEFI settings, reseating the ssd, running the Lenovo bios diagnostics (all green). Nothing works. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I use T430s + ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 ? 90W for quite a while. However, I always have a problem with the USB 3.0 port on the dock. I can connect a USB 3.0 HDD to this port and achieve 100MB of transfer speed. However, whenever I try to transfer large files like 4GB ISO file or using Windows Backup on my Windows 8/8.1, it will very soon fail and the USB 3.0 HDD will be disconnected. The large file transfer or backup never succeed.I can complete above tasks using T430s onboard USB 3.0 ports without any problem. It is just the USB 3.0 port on the dock that does not do the job. I contacted Lenovo Taiwan and they simply replace a new one for me.The problem persists with the new dock. Can anyone share some insights on this issue? Million thanks!

I have been running my T430s (running Windows 8.1) with a Mini Dock Plus Series 3, and 2x 1920x1080 LCD's for some time now.  With this configuration I was able to use the screen on the laptop as a third monitor. I purchased 2x Dell U2515H 2560x1440 monitors to replace the older FHD units.  I plugged both of these monitors in to the dock with the DisplayPort cables and fired everything up.  I was able to get one of them to work with the laptop LCD screen but if I tried to enable the second one with the laptop screen open I received the error "The display settings could not be saved".  I figured the T430 couldn't run both of the high resolution displays and the built in LCD (even though it could with the FHD displays) and tried to run just the two U2515H's with the laptop screen closed, but have had no luck.  When I try and enable the two displays together both displays go black, and I need to disconnect one (and sometimes open the laptop) in order to get the machine to come back.  Here are a couple items I have tried. I have tried both full size Display Port cables and Full Display Port to Mini Display Port cablesI have tried to reduce the resolution of one of the LCD's before enabling the second oneI have reduced the refresh rate to 30hz before adding the second LCDI have completed all Windows updates, and ensured my Intel (10.18.10.4276) and nVidia (10.18.13.5445) drivers are up to date.  The BIOS is also up to date.If I connecte... Hi, I just updated BIOS ver. from 1.30 to 1.37. Had no problem with it. The system restarted and got the message that " 2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini SATA)" This is a Crucial M4 256Gb SSD, which I'm using since 5 month. Changed it back to my old KINGSTON 64GB SSD , and it works. I've downloaded BIOS ver 1.3 , downgraded the system, but the problem still exists. It boots without any problem with the Kingston , but not with the Crucial. Currently I don't have another computer to test the Crucial SSD if it's broken, but I think it's rather BIOS related. Plese advise what to do now, because I had all my work on that SSD.  Regards,Gabor

So I've read through the history of the msata and the x220 (4286-CTO) and how the BIOS revisions were required during the middle of last year in order to get the Intel 310 and some others to work. Thinking that my little x220 with Bios revision 1.26 (i7, 8gb, 4286-CTO) would be fine, I purchased a Kingston SSDNow mS100 64GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive SMS100S2/64G and installed it yesterday. The instal went without a hitch, but when I restarted the machine, I received a 2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata) error.   I've seen that the 2101 error has been mentioned in relation to a couple of Sandisk msata drives on the forum, but those discussions didn't seem to go anywhere. I just got off my second call with Lenovo support (30 minutes today and 25 minutes last night), only to have them tell me that msata is not supported by my 4286-CTO.  That sounds incorrect, as others with the 4286-CTO seem to have luck with Intel and Renice. What am I doing wrong?  Is this something that another BIOS revision could cure?  At least on one of the sandisk discussions, the OP said that he/she had tested the drive in another computer without a problem, so I don't think it's a problem with the actual drives.   Somebody else mentioned that some drives are not compliant with the JEDEC standard, but that doesn't sound like an explanation to me either.  Thoughts?  Help! Best, sad x220

Answer:2101 Error: X220 with Kingston 64GB msata

I have the same issue with x220.  The mSATA I have is the Sandisk SDSA4DH-064G.  I can also add that the function of the mSATA is the same regardless of whether the mSATA is used in the mSATA slot or on an adapter card in the SATA hard drive bay (Error is 2100 rather than 2101, but the text is the same).  For this reason, I believe the Lenovo BIOS is unable to configure the mSATA drive appropriately.  I imagine that Lenovo could quickly resolve this with a new BIOS. I have tested this drive on a desktop consisting of a Asus P9X79 Deluxe + Intel 3960x running Windows 7, 64-bit.  Device is recognized by BIOS and WIndows Disk Manager.

Hi there, After about month of use I suddenly got an error: "2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata)". Simply while browsing the internet system hung up and after reboot the error appeared.I've read that people here had same error just after mounting their SSD's - mine worked fine for few weeks. The problem appeared short time after auto-updating BIOS but not just after flash. 2 or 3 restarts gone smoothly.Strange is that now my BIOS version is still 1.16 when on the web since last Wednesday hangs ver. 1.17 - the update went on Saturday.Any ideas how to avoid sending anything (Laptop and SSD) to RMA? I have already RMA ticket from OCZ but want to save some time and don't want to lose the data.Besides I'm not sure if it isn't issue of the new BIOS from Lenovo. Thanks in advance for any help.Gootchio

Hi, I wonder if anyone experienced the same problem with T430s sutting in Mini Dock Series 3. I have got all external devices connected via Mini Docl Series 3: keyboard, mouse, Dell U2411 monitor with USB hub, ethernet, power and eventually phone via USB.  System is dual boot with two disks running both Windows 7 or Ubuntu 12.10. If I connect Dell monitor USB hub before power on computer then my external USB keyboard is available to type disk password and then it is dropped if I try to make a choice in GRUB boot loaded.  No lights or anything on USB keyboard.  If I use ThinkPad keyboard to make a choice the system to boot then eventually keyboard would activated. In case I disconnect Dell monitor USB hub then T430s boots ok with no issues related to external USB keyboard. Other tests show if I disable Wireless WAN and/or WiMAX options in BIOS then I may boot with Dell monitor hub connected and external USB keyboard behaves as expected.  It looks like Linux reports WAN adapter as USB device.  I am not able to disable WAN adapter because I am using it eventually. Any ideas?  It looks like T430s does not like external USB devices connected on boot however it is contrary whole idea of using dockstation to keep external devices always connected on a workspace.  Oleg

Have been happily running windows 10 - with dual monitors, but since a recent update, the system once re-docked will no longer re-detect that it using different monitors. Previously i could use it:1. Un-docked - at 1600 x 9002. then when i put it to sleep3. Then dock it and resumed:     it would     a) switch to 1920 x 1080, and     b) also detect and display on the second monitor - no intervention required. Now, it remains in it's prior "state" (it neither changes state nor outputs to the second monitor) - only outputting to the first external monitor - but at 1600 x 900. Thus since a recent change, it is not "re-detecting" the "change in state" on resume, ONLY when i now do a full restart. The update may have been a Windows update, but on the same day i also installed a Toshiba Dynadock - with dual display port support. I have used the Lenovo system update to update the driver - now it is at 10.18.10.4425 - and as the driver loaded the monitors re-detected, and corrected - but later the problem is persisting. Does anyone know how to force the driver to re-detect on resume not just on restart? I recently bought Intel 802.11ac mini PCIe card and tried replacing 802.11n card in my Lenovo W540. It triggered the infamous problem with BIOS whitelist blocking: 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - power off and remove the network card (8086 / 08B1 / 8086 / C070). The card itself is FCC approved (FCC ID: PD97260NG) I updated the UEFI/BIOS hoping that may be it was too old to recognize the card - but no luck. Even with UEFI firmware 2.17 it still didn't accept the card. Can anything be done about it? Are future UEFI updates going to fix it or Lenovo basically approves a small list of vendor IDs and ignores the rest? I tried finding any cards sold directly through Lenovo, but didn't find anything, that's why I had to buy one independently. But it rejects it. Can anything be done about it except finding another card? And if not, what 802.11ac Intel cards can be used?

Hi

My Lenovo laptop died on me (work one) with the no operating system error. The guys at work swapped the HDD for a new one, as they are just interested in keeping me running, not recovering data. Fair enough. My bad for forgetting to do a backup. However. I have the errant HDD with me and its in an external caddy. I can see it when USB to my laptop but can't read it (just wants to format it). Any software I can download and run to fix it? REALLY want my data!

Answer:No operating system error on Sata 320gb in Lenovo

Provided the drive has not been formatted, there are many free software packages available that can help you recover the data... EaseUS Data Recovery is just one which has a trial version but just search for hard drive data recovery and you should see lots out there - usually a lot of trial and error is involved in recovering data and some software will be better that others at doing it.

Good luck.

I've considered installing Windows XP32bit instead of Windows Vista 64bit, but when installing Windows XP you need to hit F6 key to install RAID drivers for it to detect the Sata HDDs.

This was simple with my old motherboard (ABIT AV8 3rd Eye) because I had a floppy with the required drivers on, but now I don't have any floppy... can I download the files somewhere?

I hope what I've said is clear Please ask if there are any problems understanding something

Thanks

I am running XP Pro, with Asus K8V SE M\B and currently Maxtor SATA drive.
I needed to clone my hard drive to a new one, as the old one was suspect.
I used Norton Ghost to clone my O\S and data over to the new "WD" SATA drive (which was connected via a sata-usb adapter for convenience)

When inserting the new WD drive in to the M\B, the bios wouldn't detect the drive at all (although Windows had previously). I tried all SATA connectors on the board, but no joy with detection.
The old MAXTOR drive was only 2 yrs old (80gb), and the new drive is 250gb.

I can't see any settings in the bios to detect the sata drive.

Any ideas guys?

Many Thanks

Nick

Answer:Asus K8V SE and SATA Drive detection

IIRC these old VIA sets with the VT8237 southbridge did not upport booting from SATA. I coud well be wrong and it might be that you have to install the VIA motherboard drivers for the SATA to function. Either way it is indeed a pain.

I would reinstall the old drive and make sure the SATA drivers are indeed there. Then I would reclone the new drive from there and stand back and see what explodes.

Good luck.

It turns out that when I reset BIOS the RAID 0 I had was deleted. I Checked BIOS it was set to RAID mode, the next problem came when I attempted to access the RAID utility, it stated that no devices where detected and to press any button to continue through POST. I can?t do anything; re-formatting via windows set up, an error occurs just before it gets to the section that displays partitions and Installations, it also doesn?t recognise the RAID drivers on my floppy when setup is activating.  The Discs are Visible in BIOS but that about it, I can?t access them in any way. If anyone has any ideas or has had a similar problem you input would be appreciated .

Answer:SATA RAID Detection Problems

Very early on in the XP setup process there will be a prompt "PressF6 to install RAID/SATA drivers"...This needs to be done or Windows will not see the drive.

I'm going to be removing my 180 GB Intel SSD drive and replacing it with larger spindle drive and also adding a 256GB mSATA.    A few questions:   1)  Do I require the rubber rails as indicated here?  http://support.lenovo.com/en_CA/product-and-parts/detail.page?&DocID=PD023503   or are the SSD rails fine? 2)  Are there certain spindle hard drives that provide 'air bag' protection or do all -- i.e. is airbag protection simply just parking the heads when the computer senses motion? 3) Will all mSATA drives work for booting?  I am likely looking at a crucial 256GB.   4)  In terms of SATA II and SATA III, I currently do a fair amount of photo editing so moving files onto and off of the mSATA will be important.   My cards (Sandisk Extreme Pro) currently write to my Intel (SATA III) at 75 - 90 megs/second.    Will I be able to write at the same speed for the SATA II or will it be reduced?  (i have looked it up on the forum but it's important to me to know this definitively) Thanks in advance!!!

Answer:T430s SSD (mSATA) swap; rubber rails; air bag protection; SATA II / III write speed

1) Rubber rail is better at providing the damping from shock, as compared to the plastic rail used with the SSD in the T430s. 2) The acelerometer sensor is located on the motherboard of the laptop, which will park the hdd head when it senses a sudden aceleration/deceleration force (provided the needed ThinkVantage software is installed). So you don't need to look for a specific spindle hdd. 3) My mSATA in the T430u/T430s can do a sustained write speed of around 240 mb/s.

I currently have two IDE harddrives in my machine. However the second smaller one is failing so i brought myself a nice shiny 500gb SATA drive. However, if i plug in all the cables into the Sata Drive and then plug the other end into the Motherboard and PSU. When i turn the machine on it won't boot up. I get past the BIOS (Which has detected the new addition) and then the point where it should display the windows loading, i just get a blank screen.

If i switch the computer off and boot up again, i get the message saying "Windows did not boot up correctly" and if i pick safe mode or normal boot up, i still get the blank screen..

If i upplug the hard drive, i get normal operating computer.

Any ideas?

Answer:New Sata Drive detection and Windows Bootup

Yup, boot into Safe Mode, and download and install the SATA/RAID drivers for your particular board. Then, restart, and you should be fine.

You could do the same by unplugging the new HDD, and booting up normally, if you're not getting internet access with Safe Mode.

I'm using a T430s and a mini dock plus series 3. This is the dock with the dual DVI, dual DisplayPort, 1x VGA. I do not use the laptop's built-in screen; just the 2 external monitors. Intel HD4000 graphic chip and Nvidia Optimus/ I previously had 2 20" monitors with a 1680x1050 resolution using DVI-to-DVI. They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. The laptop is not recognizing the second monitor. I have tried:dual display port (dock side) to mini display port (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizeddual dvi (dock side) to HDMI (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizedI ruled out monitor and cable problems by swapping...each by itself works fine. Looking up specs, I believe this resolution should be supported by DP or DVI. Can anybody confirm that this is a supported config? Any ideas what is wrong? UPDATE - I did try 1 DP/mDP and 1 DVI/HDMI: this does work. However, its not an ideal solution because it would interfere with the monitors ports which I want to use for a second PC. UPDATE 2 - OK, now I am beyond aggrivated. I also have a support ticket w/ Lenovo where they suggested switching to Integrated Graphics only in the BIOS. I tried that, no luck. After changing that setting back, i tried to get my 1 DP / 1 DVI working, but now it would not recognize dual monitors. ??? After some testing, I'm finding that the -only- setup that works is the following: Dock DVI port 1 to Moni... Answer:Second monitor not detected: T430s with Mini Dock Plus Series 3 dual external monitor

Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

Hi Lenovo Community, I am in dire need of somebody's help to confirm some suspicions of my laptop. I own a t430s, bought from about a year and a half ago, its a customized model. Recently, I bought a new headset which was wireless that is supposed to be used via bluetooth. For whatever reason, I thought my laptop had bluetooth technology, but now I'm not sure what I can do, I can't return my headset, and I've been googling things up but with no answers. First I want to ask .. do I have bluetooth on my laptop? I went to device manager and this is what I got:  And from start menu I typed in bluetooth, these were the results:  Can someone please tell me how I can get bluetooth applied on my T430s so that I can use my headset wirelessly? Thank you.

I continue to enjoy my i7 T430s, but wondering if it might yet be possible to upgrade? My T430s (with NVIDIA upgrade) enables me to dock and drive THREE external monitors - this is a critical requirement for me. So I would like to keep that feature, please, but would be great if 1) There might be a comparable or smaller, lighter Thinkpad that would equal or exceed the performance of my T430s? (While still driving 3 external monitors) 2) Same as above, but one with a higher resolution, native screen? I am mostly a business user and have no need to upgrade from Windows 7 if that might affect my screen options? Thank you

Hi All, I have been wanting to factory reset my Lenovo T430s that originally came installed with Windows 8 (now currently running Windows 8.1). I haven't messed around with any of the original partitions that came configured from factory. From Disk Management, I see that there's the main C: drive, along with 4 hidden partitions of varying sizes (3 marked 'Recovery Partition' and 1 'EFI System Partition'). I first tried to press F11 to go into Windows Recovery mode and tried to 'Reset your PC', but it came back with error with not able to find required partition. So then I used the Windows 8 Create a Recovery Drive feature (checked the box that said copy the recovery partition) to a 32GB USB drive. Then with the USB plugged in, I entered the BIOS menu and made sure that the USB was selected first ahead of the HDD. The computer booted straight back into regular Windows. I searched online and it was recommended to go into BIOS and disable SecureBoot and select Both->Legacy First & CSM support enabled in the BIOS. I did that, and USB still doesn't boot or show up in the Boot Menu when you first press F12. In the Boot Menu, I only see 3 options: 1. Windows Boot Manager, 2. CD-DVD drive, 3. HDD. I do not ever once see the USB as an option. If I go to Lenovo Diagnostic Screen, it recognizes that there is USB drive plugged in. To make sure that it wasn't the USB problem, I have used MobaLiveCD to boot from the USB and it brought up the Recovery screen with no pr... Hello - when I put my T 430s into hibernation and resume, the system almost always gets hung up, requiring a forced shut-down.  I often can't even get Task Manager to start up when this happens, and the Start button is non-responsive,  I've noticed this problem most often when trying to use Internet Explorer 10 after resuming from hibernation, but it also happens when I try to use other open applications such as Outlook and WORD.  This problem does not occur when I shut down completely and re-start.  Ideas welcome.

I have a T430s, i7 with Nvidia graphics.  In my work I am thinking of shifting some of the heavily parallel operations to the GPU using the CUDA interface, but am worried about the heat that doing so will generate. On the Hardware Maintainance Manual, it's not immediately clear ( from the thermal fan picture) that the GPU is connected to the heatsink in addition to the CPU.  Is it in fact connected?  If not, what will happen if I stress it continuously (at approximately the level of heavy gameplay)?

Answer:Lenovo T430s GPU Heat Question

Although I don't have a definitive answer. You may be able to locate the repair manual for that model to see the motherboard. GPU's should be heat sunk but to what level of duty will it handle. I am amazed at how many people buy the very small form fact and wonder why their system have heating and fan cooling problems. The large cases are better able to cool and the heat sinks should be larger. Placing the notebook on one of those notebook cooler bases will help to provide cool air and flow to the underside. Most plug into the USB port. There are utilities you can install to display CPU temperature and some might also do the GPU. I use Core Temp on my system for that purpose and monitor it in the task bar. I doubt however you can run like that extensively without taking a toll on the motherboard.

Just did a clean install of Windows 10 on my T430s (Core i5 with 8 GB RAM and 128GB SSD).When I attempt to boot the laptop it hangs on the Windows logo with the small circles rotating and freezes. This happens randomly and it will boot properly 3 out of 10 times. The other times I have to power it off and on until I get the repair console and then tell it to boot normally. Sometimes this will boot but others I have to power it off and on repeatedly until it starts up. I had the same issue with Windows 7 so I'm stumped if it's a driver issue or something else going on with my laptop? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo T430s - Windows 10 boot freeze

Just wanted to add a Me Too to the list, so its not a one-of experience.Recently bought a referb T430 and am loving it.I upgraded hardware to 16GB RAM and a 500GB Samsung SSD to amp up the experience and so far so good, except for this failure to boot experience that has now appeared.I had also upgraded from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro. Maybe a mistake? When the boot hang started i did various things like force power down and CTRL-ALT-DEL and on reboot everything would be fine. Thankfully.I have run the Lenovo Hardware scan thats part of Lenovo Solution Center with no errors.I have almost come to the point of doing a Windows 10 Reset but wanted to do some research first and found this reference to the same phenomenon.I am wondering whether it may be SSD related? I could try cloning back to a standard disk drive.I also still have the original Win 7 128GB SSD. I can also try that to see if the problem goes away. Will update if any further discoveries are made

Hi, We have purchased about 100 of the Lenovo T430s laptops during the last 12 months. We have got intermittent sound issues when playing videos, flash videos etc, the sound just disappears randomly on most laptops. I have tried updating the audio drivers, the latest version from Lenovo or the latest version from the audio manufacturer. It doesn?t make a difference at all, you have the sound just fine and then you try to play a video, music or youtube video and the sound just disappears. I have noticed that sometimes when you go to Playback Devices > Select Speakers > Select Configure > Run Test the sound comes back (not always).  We have more and more users complaining about the sound issue and therefore we need to get this sorted. We have also got about 100 of the Lenovo T420 laptops and we have had no issues what so ever with the sound. Please advise what else I can do. I've searched online and a lot of people seems to have this issue, sounds like a manufacturer defect of some sort.

Lenovo T430sUSB and SD card readers intermittent SD Symptoms:- SD card reader sometimes reads card immediately and sometimes not at all (successfully reads perhaps 30-70% of the time)- Remove readable SD card and reinsert it and on it's first attempt it doesn't read (happens 30-70% of the time)- If I remove a card which read on its first attempt and not on its second attempt and try multiple times, it doesn't read ever again - unless I run gs1ss01ww.exe (see below) or reboot the computer.- Leave unreadable SD card in and run g1ss01ww.exe (driver from Lenovo website); this installs RICOH_Media_Driver_v2.14.18.01.  When it asks if I want to restart the computer, I click "no".  About 20-40% of the time, this causes the SD card to appear and be readable without a reboot. The last of these suggests it's some kind of corrupt driver.  But I could be wrong.  Are there any tests I could run to confirm if it's a hardware or software issue?   And why would the card suddenly become readable after installing the driver, when the same card was readable earlier during the same session (meaning the computer wasn't powered down)? USB external drives:- Problem is very similar to what is described above.- Drive is readable and LED shows up on device- Remove device and reinstall it; LED lights up showing it's getting power, but it is unreadable and not seen in both My Computer and Disk Management (happens 30-70% of the time)

I peeled it of (I don't meat  the  sticker on the top touchpad's cover, but the part from the bottom on which the connecting tape is in.I've got another plate which works properely, but it must be glued again to the palmrest. I know that it must me connected precisely without any spaces between. Must it be used any special glue to do that? Please help me with that

Answer:Lenovo T430s touchpad plate glue

It is almost impossible to attach a plate from another machine.  If you get one from one of the Chinese suppliers on eBay, it will probably come with adhesive on it, and paper to peel off.

Hi Friends,     I got new Lenovo T430s with Intel HD Graphics 4000 but now I like to upgrade it to NVIDIA® NVS 5200M 1GB VRAM. Is it possible? there is a port for this card in my laptop? Thnaks and Regards

Answer:Upgrading Graphics Card Lenovo T430s

You can't upgrade the graphics card, it is soldered on the motherboard. The only solution for a better graphics card is using an eGPU. Or you can return your laptop and buy the one with the discrete graphics (nVidia nvs 5200m).

Answer:I want to purchase Lenovo T430S 2352CTO Keypad

By "keypad" do you mean the full keyboard? You should be able to order this from Lenovo in India.

This Parts List shows all the individual parts you can order for a T430s: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/T430s_FRU_BOM.pdf

Note that keybvoards come from 2 or 3 different suppliers. Each has a distinctive feel. If this is important to you then make sure you get the same FRU as you now have.

Incidentally the T430s User Guide that came with your unit has instructions for removing and replacing the keyboard. If you remove the keyboard you should be able to find the FRU number for your current keyboard.

Hi everyone. I have a problem with my t430s, after updating the bios using lenovo online tool, my pc won't start anymore.  It powers, after a few seconds the wifi indicator led turn on, and stays like that. No beeps, nothing. Tried removing bios battery, the 10 press plus long press of power button, but no luck. Does anyone know a way to revive it? I don't have warranty on it. Thanks.

Answer:Lenovo T430s BIOS Update failed

Problem solved. I found some 1333 ram today and insert into my laptop. The old 1066 tams are not supported in this bios appears...
