T430 Won't Boot - ThinkPad startup screen just cycles

Question: T430 Won't Boot - ThinkPad startup screen just cycles

Please help... Have been using my T430 as usual this morning, all running fine...then...battery died while using it, so went to get the charger, now have plugged in and powered back on, and it will only get to the "ThinkPad" loading screen. It won't get to Windows. Note. it doesn't "freeze" at the ThinkPad screen, it keeps cycling through it, as if it's going to load or shutdown, but then it comes back to the ThinkPad screen, over and over again. Have updated the Lenovo Service Center this morning but that's all. I can press F10 and get into the Bios, but I don't know what to do to get it passed this boot up? I have no USBs plugged in and plugged nothing into it this morning while using it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A while ago my PC mobo fried due to a power supply melt down. Sick of spending more, on average time over the years (many) in attempting to get the various reincarnations of MS Windows OSs to work, I went and got an older Apple/Mac iBook G4 powerbook laptop with OS X (latest OS)! Boy! What a different world, and I mean better!
However, I digress!
I want to get and use the "MagicJack" VOIP system but this requires either a PC or
Intel processor based Mac (Which I don't have, nor can afford- now-retired!)
So out comes the burnt relic of a previous time. The PC with fried mobo and PS!
Replaced PS with a new 500W job and found in my junk box an older mobo
SOYO SY-6BA-IV. Also changed out the "old" HD (40 GB) with a 200GB HD also from a previous PC. The HD has Windows 2000 Pro OS on it. Downloaded the mobo SOYO installation manual and followed their advice etc on BIOS settings (BIOS Award 1998 PCI/PNP 686 219143089-"as per label on EPROM on mobo). I have Windows XP Pro and XPO Home CDs and want to load Win XP Pro in place of the Win 2000 now on the HD.
So all "new" hardware was installed, BIOS set and PC switched on. No Hardware issues noted.(No Smoke!) However, during boot. It proceeds normally with normal screens etc until it comes to :Loading Windows"-- This NEVER happens! After a black screen it starts the boot process again and runs up to the "Load Windows" point then recycles ad infinitum!
I have gone through the entire... Read more

I have a desktop PC that WAS running Windows XP.  For no apparent reason, now, on power-up, it is stuck in some sort of loop...  Initially comes up with the blue screen "We apologize for the inconvenience..." but the 30 second countdown finishes, goes to a black screen showing it's "loading"... then goes back to the "Inconvenience" screen, and continues looping.  Prior to the "Inconvenience" screen, I am able to hit "F1" and it brings up the Phoenix Award BIOS CMOS Setup Utility", but I have no idea what if anything to change.    My questions: (1) How can I make a backup CD of files I do not wish to lose, and (B) how can I enable Windows XP to operate?  I assume I'll need to use the "System Restore" disk to reset everything, but is there any way to recover specific files prior to that step?

Hi

I have an old XP Desktop that won't start up properly - in either 'normal', 'Safe' mode or even using a ubuntu cd.

When I start it up itgets past bios to the Windows logo, then shuts down and tries again, even in 'Safe' mode.

I have run Memtest, and that passes. Not sure what to try next.

Thanks

Answer:XP Desktop cycles at startup - won't boot up properly

If your not getting any error messages then its most likely a power or heat issue.

go into the bios and post the voltages and temperatures.

Hi everybody, How can I make the Nvidia settings to run on Win startup? I ask this because I set my screen settings in Nvidia control panel so every time I restart my laptop, screen settings are reset as well. The strange thing is that sometimes Nvidia settings do run at startup for some reason, but only occasionally. Also, when I log off and log in to Win again, those settings are applied but almost never after the restart. Cheers and thanks, Srdjan

Dear Community,I recently purchased a Thinkpad T430 with Windows7 Pro edition preinstalled.  I want to replace the installed SSD drive with a larger SSD drive (samsung 840 pro).  I have no files on the laptop yet.  After careful reading of several posts and the Thinkpad manual, I created a recovery medium (boot and data) using the Lenovo installed tools onto a 16GB USB flash drive.  I then removed the lenovo SSD drive and replaced it with the Samsung SSD drive.  I connected the flashdrive to the USB port and attempted to boot from this flash drive.  In the boot menu, both the Samsung drive and the USB drive show up, but if I select the USB drive nothing happens (the boot menu reloads).  After reading more posts, I went into the BIOS menu and tried some suggested changes but nothing seems to work.   I am an ordinary user, I am not an IT professional and embarked on this adventure thinking it should be straightforward enough.  Can someone help me please? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad T430 Cannot Boot from Recovery disk

Hello and welcome,

Was the flash drive properly prepared before creating the recovery image?

New or used USB memory keys or USB flash drives require an active partition created from within Wind...

Sometimes a non-booting flash drive can be fixed by setting the partition active.   Use the instructions in the above link but don't clean, create, or format - or do anything that might corrupt the data.  Just select and set active.

If there's something else wrong with the drive prep (wrong format, for example), you may be able to get it working by doing the prep on a 2nd USB drive and copying the contents of the first drive.

You only get to make the recovery media once so if neither of these work you'll need to call support and request DVDs.  In a case like this where the recovery drive creation has failed they may or may not charge for the media.

Hi I have a Thinkpad t430 that I bought last September. Past few days, suddenly the screen turns grey, and only way to reopen windows is to repeatedly hit the power button. It will not boot most times. Sometimes, when I am working suddenly everything starts turning gray  and system freezes.  What is the problem? I don't do gaming, and use my laptop only for browsing, and for MS Office.  Thanks.

Happy New Year.  I'm typing this as a means to blow off some steam and to warn anyone considering the purchase of a Lenovo product.  Yesterday I unboxed a new ThinkPad T430 (2344BMU), my second.  A year ago I purchased my first T430 (23445GU) and have been nothing but happy with it since, however, given the chance to upgrade the processor I took advantage.  The first thing I noticed when I powered up the new laptop was that the fan sounds like a small turbine when it kicks in, with a distinct whirring sound as it winds up.  This was a major surprise as the fan on my first T430 rarely ever caught my attention, and then only when really pushing the CPU.  The second thing I noticed, as the two laptops sat side-by-side, was that the screen on the new T430, despite having the same 1600x900 resolution, was noticably less vibrant than the old laptop's screen, as if there's a fine coating of dust on it.  Barely a half hour of research later I learned that Lenovo has multiple contracts for fan and screen production, with a distinct difference in quality among the manufacturers, and that it basically comes down to luck regarding screen and fan quality on any given computer sold by Lenovo.  Call me picky, but when I spend $1500 on something I expect a certain level of quality.  Here Lenovo has failed miserably.  Given that my purchase wasn't directly with Lenovo but through a third party, it seems that I've no recourse other than to grin... Hello, just bought a T430 here and I'm loving it. The keyboard is comparable to any desktop and the portability and battery life fit my needs perfectly. With the old T420, you could adjust the settings so Fn + F3 would turn the screen off without putting the computer to sleep. However, with the new chicklet style keyboard (which is now 6 rows instead of 7), lenovo seems to have made Fn + F3 lock the computer. I can't seem to find any way to turn the screen off without affecting active downloads/music/etc. Any help would be appreciated.

First change the ?Lower display refresh rate? to ?never? in Power manager as shown in the screenshot below.

If issue still persists, I would suggest you to uninstall the current graphics driver that you have. Let windows install its own generic drivers. Once generic driver has been installed, test again and see if the problem occurs. If it does not, download the latest graphic driver for your system from Lenovo Support page, install it and test again.

Hope this helps!

I found a thread:http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=147268

I am having the same problem - computer starts to boot - then re-boots then starts to boot - then re-boots... Yet when I use my Super WinPE CD and tell it to boot from my C: drive it boots up fine.

And needed to ask Adrynalyne about this issue I am having with my computer. His quote;

"Agreed. also note if you have SP2, or not. You should see the option that dlb mentioned if you have SP2. If you do have SP2, and dont see that, please let us know.

A repair right out of the gate is a bad idea."

I got my error screen info:

STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF79BB528, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

Need to know if this is a fix using my WinXP original CD?

Another thing I noticed is that my Pioneer DVD/CD drive does not automatically close on a re-boot (which I am pretty sure it did before this...)

thanks

-K

Answer:WinXP re-boot cycles and cycles and...

A bit of research tells me that 0x0000007B is a drive controller issue; meaning the system IDE/SATA drivers have been corrupted or aren't loading correctly. If you have recently swapped out your motherboard or installed a separate IDE/SATA controller, this can happen. The Microsoft web site recommends a repair install of Windows at this link. In extreme cases, formatting the hard drive may be needed and installing Windows clean is required. Hopefully, this is not the case here. A good step-by-step for a Windows repair install can be found here. Before trying that, you can try booting to your XP disc, entering the recovery console, and running chkdsk /r and just letting it run. It can take some time. Before doing that, you might want to follow the steps here. I hope this helps!
Good luck! And welcome to Major Geeks!

Hi, Recently bought a T430 (Without Optimus). All's good except the Laptop Temp. The left Palm rest seems to get un usually warm, no matter what OS I am on. Its a dual boot by the way, Win 7 + Ubuntu 12.04.2. With Ubuntu or CentOS or Scientific Linux, the laptop gets unusually warm...The temp monitoring utility (lm_sensors) says that its at about 45 C. I get the same temp reading on Win 7 too, but somehow, the laptop just feels more warm with Linux than Win 7.As of right now, I am on Win 7 (for past 4-5) hours.....did some browsing, MS Sec Essentials did a full disk scan, I saw some youtube vids and was toying with some Perl Scripts, and the temp is at 45C, and the left palm rest is quite warm. Its warm enough that I have to stop typing every few minutes  Has anyone else noticed this issue? Is there a work around to this issue? Is there something I should worry about ? Please let me know. I installed the new updates a month ago. This problem though, has been there since a while. I searched the forum and found that another user who had a similar issue was told to upgrade the BIOS from 1.6 something to 2.50. Answer:Thinkpad T430 gets significantly warm on Win 7 as well as Linux. How about a fellow T430 user ?

In my experience, Linux isn't as good with power management as Windows. 45 degrees sounds about right for a current-gen Intel processor due to Turbo Boost causing temperature spikes as you use your system normally. As for the warm left palmrest, the hard drive sits under there, so maybe the drive just tends to produce more heat. Assuming you have a conventional hard drive, give it a defrag to reduce operating stress (and hence power consumption and heat output).

Hi all,  I took my T430 apart and after putting it back together, I'm able to turn it on (screen light and all buttons light up, fan starts working, etc) but the screen stays black and it seems like it isn't booting up.  When I was screwing in the palm rest, I mistakenly used the wrong screws (two long ones instead of the short ones). I forced the screws inside (I recall hearing a cracking noise when I put the left screw in). I realized my mistake and replaced them with the proper screws, but perhaps forcing the wrong screws in could have damaged some important part (motherboard?)? Any ideas? Thank you, Mike

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Hello. I have a serious problem. Whenever I turn on my laptop (Lenovo T430), it just gives me an error message:PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, Check Cable" Error Messageand goes to boot device select screen. No matter what I select on there, there's no way past that screen, it always goes back to it. I cannot boot from a Windows DVD or USB. If I select to boot from DVD drive, it sounds like the disc is being read for like a second but then as I said before - goes back to boot device select screen.I tried changing the boot order in BIOS, tried reseating the hard drive. All that did was get rid of that PXE error, but I'm still stuck on the boot device selection part. Before the problem started I did a clean install of Windows 7 (downgrade from Windows 10 on a new partition). Everything was working fine, I installed a few applications, started downloading updates AND used MiniTool Partition Wizard to merge the old Windows 10 partition with the one I use to store my files. I did not touch the one with Windows 7. I would really appreciate some help..  Thank You.

My internal monitor for my t430 is dead.  In order to show the boot screen on the external monitor, I believe I need to enter bios to change Boot Mode from UEFI to Legacy, similar to the solution here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-B-and-G-Series-Notebooks/Lenovo-Boot-screen-not-displayed-on-ext.... However, I do not know the sequence of keystrokes and do not want to use keystrokes for another bios that might not share the same layout.  Can anyone tell me the keystokes to change Boot Mode from UEFI to Legacy on the T430.  A Youtube video of the bios layout would be awesome.

Since this happened, 80% of the time when I launch a program that enters full screen mode, i.e. games (and also sometimes when alt+tabbing out of these applications), the display goes solid black and then begins to cycle through solid colours.

The only thing I can imagine would be causing the problem to occur is when opening the programs the screen resolution changes and somehow causes an error due to the drivers.

The graphics card is an Intel(R) HD Graphics.
The video BIOS is 1994.0
Current Graphics mode is 1600 by 900.

I'd really appreciate any useful comments on this problem as it has become quite tedious. If you need any more information please let me know what it is and the best way to obtain it.

Thanks in advance

Hi!

My computer doesn't seem to start up anymore. It only enters the "Boot menu" tab with no further information. When I'm trying to press "Enter" it just returns back to same screen again. Is my harddrive broken?

Is there some reset button available anywhere on the device?

Please help!

Answer:Yoga Thinkpad: Only enters Boot Menu on startup

Neither am I able to boot it from a USB (had an idea to update BIOS). Doesn't think the SSD is the problem then. When selecting the USB HDD it returns to the screen displayed above. It doesn't go any further. A couple of similar threads describing this problem on other models. Unfortuneatly no quick solution was mentioned. One got his motherboard switched... I was hoping for an easier solution though

Dear firends,I forgot to turn off my laptop last night and it went to sleep or hibernate mode. In the morning, I tried to turn it on and received the "battery low" alarm and it turned off. I pluged in the power cable and tried to turn it on, but I received the same alarm and I decided that the power outlet is out of function, so I tried another power outlet. The startup screen came up, it quickly went black, again the startup screen came up, again it quickly went black, and it continued to repeat unstoppably. So I truned it off. I left the laptop not working for about 15 minutes, then tried again, but the issue persists. Anyone can help solve the problem? Thank you.

Hey I have a Thinkpad T42 with the ATI Radeon 7500 card. Every time I start the computer bluescreens after the windows symbol comes up and loads for a while. The computer then restarts and it will run totally fine in safe mode. It also runs ok if the driver is uninstalled. I just updated the bios and the embedded controller. I am running XP pro SP2 and I just did a system restore to factory settings. I also tried several different ram configurations but to no avail. Any suggestions about what to do?thanks

Hello mate, Unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, you push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals.Next, you push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then you put the battery back in and push the power button to turn on the computer. See if it works.

Hello,

My Thinkpad Yoga (model year 2014-2015) gives sometimes a white screen by startup, or after a softclose (for example when turn over from laptop to tablet mode). When I open and close my screen after a couple of times the screen is ok and I can work with it.

I called Lenovo support because I think it is something with the connector from the screen to the motherboard. The computer was 2 months out of warranty so they say that I could send it to support for a check, what will cost me a lot of money for only analyse the issue. So I asked for another solution.

They asked me to reinstal Windows and al the drivers, because they think that it is a software issue. Because there is a lot of software on my computer, and I need him every day for my work, I didn't have time to do this directly (first make a backup and then reinstall al the software).

So I bought a new Lenovo thinkpad Yoga 260, and installed al my software. Now my "old" Yoga, whit the white screen issue, is ready for reinstall the software.

Today I reinstalled Windows 10, but the issue is still there "sometimes white screen". So I think again it is not a software issue but a issue whit the connector from the screen to the motherboard.

My question is if someone has experience whit this issue, or maybe the same issue?

Hi Manh_luckyboy, Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are looking for International Warranty & system getting very hot on your ThinkPad T430. Regarding the Warranty please use the MTM (Machine Type Model) number to check if the system is supported in your region or not. International Warranty And regarding the heating issue please boot the system in safe mode and check if the system is getting heated? Uninstall the antivirus application and check if the temperature of CPU is going higher than 45"C. Hope this helps.

Question: ThinkPad T430

Hello all., just new to this forum. I have just ordered a T430 to replace my existing L412. The blurb from the supplier is: Lenovo T430 i5-3320M /4Gb/320-7/HD+/GC/MB/Wi/B/F/C/W7P-64, Mfr. Part Number: N1XG4UK. Just wondering what my upgrade options are : ) It comes with 1 x 4GB SODIMM, which I assume occupies the slot under the keyboard rather than the slot accessed via the back so would be feasible to install a 4 or 8GB module from Crucial to bring the memory to 8/12GB. Hard drive is just a 320-GB, so would like to speed up the system with a SSD driver of around 256GB, any suggestions? does the laptop take mSATA SSD and what are the options? It also states that it has an Enhanced Ultrabay not sure what this is and what the options are? I see the documentation states: The computer comes with either a PCI Express Mini Card for wireless WAN or an mSATA solid-state drive? Specification sheet below if it helps? Wireless technology: WWAN; PAN; LANInterface type: Communication Daughter Card (CDC); Mini-PCIeAntenna: Ultra Connect; UltraConnect IINumber of slots: 1 Smart Card + Express Card, 1 SIM Full Total=1, 1 Mini-PCIe Half, 1 Mini-PCIe Full, 1 4-in-1 Media Card Reader, 1 Express Card or Smart CardWireless transmission: Bluetooth: 1Mbps, --, 11a:54Mbps, 11b:11Mbps, 11g:54Mbps, 11n:exceeds 100Mbps Thank you for any advice in advance. Cheers, Neil.

Answer:ThinkPad T430

You should have no problem installing a second RAM module, be it 4GB or 8GB, or replace the 4GB module with a pair of 8GBs. Crucial's website will give you the specific part numbers for modules that are compatible with your T430.

While you're at the Crucial website they'll also suggest M4 model SSDs for your T430. Note that you need 7mm thick drives. The more common 9.5mm models are too thick. The T430 doesn't support mSATA SSDs.

You can replace the DVD drive with a 12.7mm Ultrabay Enhanced adapter to hold the SSD. A better approach IMO is to put the SSD in the standard drive bay in place of the 320GB HDD. Then, if you need the HDD you can put it in the Ultrabay adapter or in a separate USB connected HDD enclosure.

I'm experiencing random boot issues with a brank new thinkpad yoga 20CD0038PB win 8.1 pro. Once the system stalls on the boot screen the fn light stays on and I cannot even access bios. Powering down and keeping power button pressed for several second doesn't help either, However If I leave the computer powered down for and hour or longer it usually boots like nothing happened. Then the issue comes back intermittently with a restart or sometimes a preceeding blue screen. Sometimes when the issue occures it also reports hdd0 error, and lenovo sent me a new hdd which I replaced that this has not fixed the issue. I have the latest BIOS GQET29WW 1.09. I've run memory and disk tests using Lenovo Solution Center and memory tests in bios and they were ok. On the BIOS download page I've found references to some issues regarding boot hangs with earlier versions of bios (1.7). At this point I'm stuck. Anyone experiencing similar issues?

Answer:ThinkPad hangs on boot - stuck at Lenovo boot screen

I am also experiencing this problem Like the OP, it seems random and has occured from day one. Boots to Lenovo ScreenFails to show spinning circleF1 light stays onNothing further happens (longest I have left it for is ~ 5 min). If I hold the power button down for several seconds, I can switch the machine off. Usually waiting 30-60 seconds and re-starting is sufficient for a normal boot and start up. On occassion, I have to go through the shut down cycle twice before I can successfully start the computer. Unlike the OP, I have not seen any error messages, or blue screen.  System Info:20CDCT01WWWindows 8.1 Pro256gb/8gbEmdedded Controller Version 1.09

Ok so today I turned on my laptop and everything seemed fine, regular starting up windows message appeared but after that, what usually should've been the login screen, was replaced by a black screen. I could move my mouse pointer but that was about it, It wouldn't load the login scren. I booted up safe mode and login screen came up fine. Now before you link me to a solution and brush me off, I tried alot of things on my own. I deleted AMD Radeon HD and nothing changed. I did a system restore and nothing. Ok so maybe thats not alot of things, but that was all I could think of. Any help would be apreciated. Thank you.

Two days ago my wife's laptop gave up, apparently. On startup the red led lights up and the fan starts. After 10-12 seconds the fan revs up to maximum and stays that way. There's not even a flickering on the screen. I've tried everything I can think of. Connected external display, vga and hdmi and there's nothing on them. Tried to boot to a Windows install DVD but that doesn't work. Tried to remove , reinstall DIMM's. I've had the HDD out and connected to another computer and it seems ok. Checked the LCD connectors and they seem ok too. There's no responsewhen pressing F2 or any other key on startup. Any ideas appreciated! Best regards,Per

f8 at startup, see if you can get into safe mode without bluescreening. if you can get in then try to uninstall that program or at least you should be able to find out why it's bluescreening.

Has anyone found a way to successfully install intel wi-di on a t420 or t430 running windows 10? I have tried many driver combinations without success. From what I have read it seems that these machines used intel?s proprietary tech for wireless displays where the current gen is just miracast rebranded. Its seems intel is no longer developing for new operating systems for 4-year-old hardware.

I just got a T430 from the Lenovo outlet.  The volume is not inaudible, but it's not loud enough when we are trying to watch a movie on DVD and even worse when watching a show online from a website.  We have to make sure the environment in the apartment is pretty quiet--AC is off, dishwasher is off, baby is happy, etc.  Any little extra noises make it very difficult to hear most dialogue even after using the buttons to adjust the volume to its highest.  I've been into the control panel to adjust the system volume, but this is already at its highest point when the volume buttons have been used to set the volume to its loudest setting.  It seems like there must be something else going on or there would be a lot of complaints about this computer in this regard, and I'm not finding any.  Are there some solutions for me apart from buying speakers or using headphones (because there are two people watching, not just one)?  Please "dumb down" your suggestions because I am not very tech savvy!  Thank you in advance!

Hi This issue has probably been really beaten up thoroughly, but I just thought I would summarise and and ask a few more questions just so that we can reach a conslusive answer: Well, about battery charging and discharging: The first time, once I get it from the maufacturer, I found the battery to be around 46%, and so, Charged it to 100% just to ensure it did work properly. I am told full charging each time is not only unnecessary, it is also harmful for the battery. Why? Is this true? I gueess, in modern laptops, there must be a circuit that also protects against overcharging? I am an engineering student and as such will have to use the thinkpad T430 for running some engineering software. What could be the practice I cam follow to have maximum life span for my battery? I was thinking of charging till say 90% each time, run it on battery with the AC power off and then letting it discharge till say 10% or so before charging again. I would be using up a lot of cycles then.. Or shall I just keep it plugged in most of the time, and unplug from AC power only when I need to? Will this do anything harmful to the Battery cycle? Or, since, I will have access. to AC power most of the time, and so, should I remove the battery after charging it to say 40% or so and just use AC power? So sorry for the barrage of questions. I am hearing so many things. Not sure what to do and follow. Thanks many for any help

Answer:Thinkpad T430 Battery

1) Overcharging you mentioned relating to safety is controlled by the battery controller. But the harmful effect is more related to wear and tear, which is only controlled to a certain extent, and can be managed by user and ThinkVantage Power Manager under custom charge mode. So basically the differences in how you set the battery charging threshold may mean the difference of using your battery for 2 years versus 4 years (an example). upper 90% or 95% sounds fine. Use your battery only when you think you need, everytime you use it will cause damage to it, as it is a consumable product. Battery is best stored between 40 to 60%, especially if you don't use it often. But i would use the battery once every 2 weeks, to maintain the cathode and anode, preventing them from degrading. Also, keeping the battery in the laptop also serves as UPS, and if you have 65 watts adapter, then you should have the battery plugged in, so that you can allow the CPU to operate at its maximum speed (without battery it will be throttled down).

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T430

Welcome to the forum.

Yes that SSD and Ultrabay adapter will work just fine.

A couple of comments.
1. While 64GB is enough for the OS and some apps it's a bit tight IMO. SSD prices have been falling. Consider a 120GB or even 240GB drive. That way you can run the T430 without the HDD in the Ultrabay if necessary. I do that when I travel so that there are no moving parts to get damaged by inadvertent shocks.
2. Another option to consider is an mSATA SSD to go into the WWAN socket. This would let you keep the existing HDD where it is and leave the Ultrabay available for the DVD or even another SSD/HDD.

I don't know if it's the correct section to post this but I'm desperately looking for help. My Lenovo notebook has been giving me problems for months - it won't start up normally. Usually when I "on" the notebook, it will first be a BLANK SCREEN with the backlight on. For the first few times it happened, a couple of tilting and swinging of the notebook monitor would do the trick but today, it is completely blank. The first time this happened when was I closed the laptop to let it sleep for 15 minutes. When I came back and open the laptop again, the screen just won't load until I tilt it for about 2~3 times. I tried tilting and swinging to the monitor screen again but it just won't load - just a blank screen with the backlight. It has been like this for the whole day. First thing is - can I claim warrenty from Lenovo for this? It's a hardware problem. Second would be - Will this affect the memory of my laptop if I were to change the monitor? Thirdly - How long will the repair take ( approximately ) ? Will it be an on-site repair or do I have to leave it in the service center for a few days? Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T410 blank screen with backlight when startup

sounds like a hardware problem with either connection cable or the LCD itself.

hello i am having issues repairing my daughters acer lp. she believes it is a virus, the lp will start up and goes into the windows boot manager window. status:0xc000000f i am unable to go into any safe mode and once i try different sorts of bootups the lp will start power cycling itself/it does work fine if i run a scanner and or it's just sitting there. i have downloaded avg usb scanner but find it a little confusing. it says there are errors but no viruses as of yet.
i've also tried creating a usb boot.ini but that didn't work and started confusing me*i probably did that wrong/i read xp would work because it was probably the boot.ini that was corrupted*, i also looked into creating a iso disk but atm all i ahve to work with is a 2g usb flash drive or external harddrive.
i am thinking it might possibly be registry error and wondering if there is a usb bootable program i can use? i would appreciate any help at all feels like i'm going in circles at this point.

Answer:acer will not boot and power cycles

adding i've tried to get the kaspersky rescue disk but receiving a error message unable to locate grub.exe...little to advanced for me with the code that needs to be entered. i tried installing grub onto usb but that didn't work.

I am running Windows XP on a Gateway Notebook that my father gave to me 3 years ago. It's run beautifully since day 1 for me and I'v never had a problem until now. It starts by going to a selection screen for me to choose what mode I want to start in (ie. Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc) then, when I make a selection it starts booting until it gets to this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\agpCPQ.SYS

then it stops and starts over. As much as I'd like to save everything on my c:\\ drive, I really don't care anymore... I just want to have my computer back! It keeps cycling through this and won't turn off unless it runs out of battery. Being the Gateway Notebook, it does not have a disk drive for me to attempt to boot from.. I'm at a complete loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:XP Continuously cycles thru boot process

Your hard drive may have died.

This will require a CD Write ROM as well as a blank CD.

Installing IMGBurn
Step 1: First you’ll need to download a program called IMGBurn from here: The Official ImgBurn Website

Step 2: Run the installer when asked and follow the onscreen installation guide.

Downloading Seagate Tools
Step 1: Next you will need to save Seagate Tools for DOS to a working PC.

Step 2: Make your way to this website here: SeaTools | Seagate

Step 3: Once there click the Downloads Tab at the top. Then select Seagate Tools for DOS.

Step 4: When asked to accept the terms and agreements press accept.

Note: By pressing accept you are stating that you agree and fully understand the documentation.

Step 5: Press the download button and save the file to your desktop.

Writing the File
Step 1: Returning to your desktop launch the IMGBurn software.

Step 2: In the menu of IMGBurn select Write Image file to Disk

Step 3: Select the Seagate Tools .ISO file to be burned to your black CD.

Step 4: Now we need to finish off by writing the file to the CD. Press the Write to CD button and allow the process to begin.

Running Seagate Tools
Step 1: Once IMGBurn has finished writing the CD, take the CD and put it into the PC to test.

Step 2: Reboot the PC. While it is booting keep pressing F8 until you are asked on which drive you should boot from.

Step 3: Select your CD ROM and Seagate tools should appear.

Step 4: Once Seagate tools... Read more

I bought a ThinkPad 540p that comes with preloaded Windows 8.1. As I want to dual boot the machine I tried to select the Legacy Boot option in the BIOS/Startup tab, but I can't do anything as the option UEFI/Legacy Book is greyed out and locked in "UEFI Only". Below it there is an option called: -CSM Support that is also greyed out and selected as [No]. (below  these options there is a little note with an asterisk saying "Unselectable for Secure Boot"). How can I enable the UEFI/Legacy Boot option again in order to dual boot the computer? I want to be able to boot from USB or from the CD Drive.   Thank you very much for helping me out!

I'm not sure where it is in your BIOS (security tab maybe) but there should be an option to turn off secure boot.

Hi all, I need help to understand what the problem with my Thinkpad T430 is. The thing is that it shut downs just like that. So far it has shut down while on battery. Any ideas? Could it be the battery? It has 400 charges but from what I understood it can hold to more than 500 charges. Regards Boris

Hi community! Yesterday, I accidentally spilled coffee (no sugar and only a little bit of milk) in my ThinkPad T430.it was plugged in the charger, and as soon as I spilled coffee the computer shut down (the coffee reached the bottom of the screen)I took off the battery and the keyboard, cleaned a bit and now the computer is drying.when I opened there was coffee around but apparently it didn't reach the mother board. I am almost sure it won't turn on again due to the fact it instantly shut down when the coffee touched the keyboard. However, I Hope you can give me more positive views on my computer's situation? Is there any chance to save it?  ThanksNymsai

After only a couple of months of use, some of the keys have become really squeaky, and some feel as if the spring is broken so they produce unpleasant sound. Normally, I would not pay much attention to it, but since my work involves a lot of typing and I purposedly bought this laptop for its praised keyboard, this have become quite annoying, another disappointment . I would like to remove those keys and try to see what is causing this sound. Has anyone tried to remove the keys on the new keyboard and is it possible without causing damage to the keyboard itself? Cheers, Srdjan

Answer:Removing a key on the new thinkpad keyboard (T430)

I have the same problem with my keyboard on T530 only after a couple of months of use, and I do very little of typing. The really squeky/noisy keys are the backspace and the arrow keys at the bottom right corner. This came as a huge surprise to me as well because the Thinkpad's keyboard is specifically advertised to be "military tested".

I bought a refurbished t430 a while ago and it hasn't given me any major issues. But recently I put it to sleep and tried to power it back on and the only thing it does is light the power button for less than a second. I have a T430 with the Nvidia option, purchased last month. When doing anything intensive (playing a game, etc.) the laptop gets very hot. I've downloaded speedfan, and have seen my CPUs go over 80oC which is terrible for a laptop. Any chance Lenovo will fix this, or should I just return the laptop for a refund? I called support and was told to download updates... all drivers/bios/windows updates are at latest.Windows 7 64-bit Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad T430 heat issue

Why do you think is terrible? 80+oC on intensive tasks (CPU&GPU) doesn't look terrible to me. You're still far from the T-junction point. My T420s gets 90oC when I'm playing games but I think it's ok  as long as it doesn't throttle or shutdown (and does not burn my lap). It's a laptop after all, slim package, many watts to dissipate, especially in full load.

Hello everyoneso a week ago I install fedora 18 on my lenovo Thinkpad and if you have done it before you know  that installing a linux requires a partitioning on your HDD in fedora 18 the installation process does that automatically. So I freed up some space on my HDD and left it for fedora to use. The problem starts when fedora installation was complete. After that my windows 8 boot loader was missing that the grub (Linux boot loader) found the windows OS but when I enter windows I get this error exactly:"windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause....File: \boot\BCDStatus: 0Xc0000225Info: The boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors."so windows is not loading...Base on that error I think that fedora installation edit or deleted my boot partition on my laptop. There is a recovery partition on my HDD. Hi, I recently found out that I couldn't completely shut down my ThinkPad T430 as whenever I clicked 'Shut down' from 'Power', the OS would go through normal shut down procedure, and the laptop seemed to be shut down, but the fingerprint reader still flashes with an interval of about 1 sec. I replaced the mother board on my white box. I replaced a Intel d850m with a new d850emv board. When I startup the PC, the computer cycles through the Intel Pentium screen shot to No Input and then to my selection of either startup in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last know good config, etc. However still cannot boot. I went into BIOS, but cannot adjust the setting (It is greyed out) from what it is says is a 2.0 Gig processor to the acutal processor of 1.7 Ghz.

Answer:Replaced Motherboard - Computer cycles but cannot boot

Clear CMOS and see if you can get into BIOS and make the necessary changes.

Anytime you change motherboard, unless it's replaced by an identical one, it is always necessary to do a clean install of Windows XP.

I am posting from my phone using voice to text so please bear with me. Here is what I was doing prior to being unable to load windows:
I was ripping one of my DVDs into an MP4 file using a software from brorsoft. I have been using this software for about a year. It crashes once in a while but other than that never has created any system issues.
After I downloaded AVG antivirus when I thought I had a virus and then turned out that it was not a virus I had trouble removing the AVG antivirus here's where the problem started.
I tried uninstalling AVG antivirus in safe mode but an error occurred so I'm not quite sure if the uninstall completed successfully. After that I have not been able to load windows and whenever I restart my computer it crashes just prior to loading windows XP and restarts the boot cycle over and over again.

Answer:Windows XP doesn't load and boot cycles over and over

Tap F8 at boot and select Disable Auto-Startup on System Failure. Reboot and see what error if any is shown on the Blue Screen if there is one. You may also want to try "Use Last Known Good Configuration" in the Advanced Boot Options.

Hi, I am not sure from where this came from, - from what site, but here it sits on my computer..

I have a home-built computer, XP OS,
MotherBoardECS Elitegroup A790GXM-AD3

A virus as it downloaded a bunch of nasty things, including stopping MSE from running. There was also the virus "WIN 7 anti-virus" running. I hit RKILL 2x to stop everything. I ran spybot, and Malwarebytes. Mal found over 50 items, spybot found a few. Even after this the MSE would not start. Running spybot again, it came up with the one same item as it tried to delete previously - something called MSE override.

SOoo Malwarebytes told me to reboot to remove remaining bad items, - which I did, now the computer cycles to boot, but will not boot completely, it goes up to the windows screen just for half a sec then the computer reboots itself. Upon rebooting, I see a flicker of a blue screen which I think would give me some info on what is being halted, but is waaay to quick.
Any Safe-mode option does not work, tries to launch, but reboots. Because of this I cannot put up any log files, etc.

I believe I have a boot virus.

I am able to get to the recovery console, but never dealt with that.
Read information on the recovery console, -on my computer I proceeded as far as to it asking "Which windows installation would you like to log onto?" I hit "1" as I only have one OS loaded. ( I do have 2 HD though)

I am thinking the next step would be to type "FIXMB... Read more

Hello all!
New to the Dell Forums, I've always wanted to sign on and learn more about my devices through community discussion, but I never have. Now I have a more emergent reason to.

My Dell Inspiron 3847 Tower refuses to turn on. I was playing league of legends on my desktop. I received a blue crash screen and my computer turned off. I then proceeded to turn it back on, however the power light would go orange, then white, fans would turn on, then stop. Computer would completely shut off two seconds after turning it on and it cycles. I'll turn it on, it'll go orange, white, then off. It would cycle for hours if I let it.
My first instinct is a fried power supply, however I don't see how my power supply would go kaput in the middle of a gaming session.
I don't want to spend the $50 on purchasing the power supply if that's not the case. Anyone help me out as to what the issue is?
Thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 3847 Cycles Boot

The power supply would indeed be the first suspect, but before going further, unplug the system and hold the power button for 30 sec.  See if you can get it to start up -- if it won't, replace the power supply first.  If that doesn't solve the problem, then replace the mainboard.
If you are not willing to start swapping parts, most PC shops will do a basic diagnosis for a relatively low cost and provide a repair estimate that credits the diagnostic fee toward the ultimate cost of the repair.

Recently I was in the middle of using my laptop when it bluescreened and crashed. Now I'm not proud of this, but for some reason this is not an uncommon sight; I bought this off of eBay a couple months ago and it worked fine for a few days before randomly bluescreening often. Now I tried to change and install all the eight drivers, and while that solved most issues for awhile. But then I received a detection error 2100 main hdd0 on startup. Now I actually fixed it that time, and none of my files seemed to be damaged, which is strange given the nature of the error but I didn't question it. Now however the error is back seemingly inspired and I can't seen to get my laptop to simply boot. I ran the memory test and it passed and I don't even have an ssd so I don't know what the issue is or why it was fixed last time (I changed the SATA to compatability and then back to ahci and reset it). I think it might have to do with a faulty or corroded contact but I have not opened it to check. If it's anything like last time, I'm willing to bet that there is actually nothing wrong with my drive but something is again causing it not to be detected. I do have photos if that will help, but they need to be compressed so for now I hope this will be enough.

Hi, I have a Thinkpad T430 with Windows 8.1 pro (8.1 update installed). The problem keeps bore me is the touchpad is not working properly on Win 8 gestures. For example, the finger slides in from left and right ride of the touchpad, which suppose to pop current running Win 8 apps and search & settings respectively. But when I do that, it gives me nothing. The situation is that everytime if I boot/reboot the laptop, the touchpad will work smoothly for a while. But if I hiberbate the laptop (folding the screen back down) and turn it back on the next day for a few days, the touchpad won't work on the gestures anymore. So I am wondering how to fix the issues. I have also intalled the drivers for touchpad and pointing device through ThinkVantage centre, but it did not help. cheers

Hello,  we are trying to use our ThinkPad T430 to support an external microphone.  The microphone is coming in via a mixing desk.  Previously our laptops have had two input points - audio and microphone and we have connected via the microphone input. Hi,In the last few months or so (possibly after I updated the BIOS), when I put my T430 into sleep mode when plugged in, it does not wake up. If it is not pluged in and I put it to sleep (in both cases by closing the lid) then it wakes up fine. When plugged in, I changed the power settings so that it will hibernate when plugged in but it takes long to do this so I prefer if the sleep mode were to work again. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. BIOS Version/Date LENOVO G1ET94WW (2.54 ), 22/04/2013Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz, 2901 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)BIOS Version/Date LENOVO G1ET94WW (2.54 ), 22/04/2013System Model 2344CTOIntel(R) HD Graphics 4000, Driver version 9.17.10.2843Display Driver: NVIDIA NVS 5400M, Driver version 9.18.13.697Network adapter: Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection, Driver version 11.15.16.0Centrino-Advanced N6205, driver version 15.4.1.1 I looked in the forums and there are similar problems but can't find a solution. Thanks, Shafiq

Answer:ThinkPad T430 - Cannot wake up from sleep if plugged in

Hi, Shafiq

I have a few questions to gain more clarification about your issue: FIrstly, does the issue arise when you attempt to wake the system from sleep while plugged in, or is it an issue where if you put it to sleep while plugged in, you will not be able to wake the machine?

Also, do you use Windows for the power settings or are you using Lenovo Power Manager?

Thanks in advance,Adam

Answer:ThinkPad (T430) battery compatibility issue

HelloThe batteries for T410/420 are not compatible with T430, even Lenovo genuine ones. Because of T430 features hardware authentification of the battery installed. The batteries for old laptops like T410/420 don't have such features (authentification chips inside). This chip missing causes the battery being installed in the T430 can't be charged. So, you have to purchase Lenovo original battery for T430.

UPD
Lenovo original batteries for T430 are backward compatible with T420
