Do I really need ThinkVantage Active Protection System?

Question: Do I really need ThinkVantage Active Protection System?

I'm always weary about third-party software and things extra to windows...specially programs that start themselves during windows boot. So I'm wondering about ThinkVantage Active Protection System...do I really need it on my T440s? I've read it acts like an airbag to protect the HDD incase I drop or bump my machine. but what If its always sitting on my desk and I never drop it or bump it...then do I still need to have it installed?

Preferred Solution: Do I really need ThinkVantage Active Protection System?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Do I really need ThinkVantage Active Protection System?

As long as your machine is runing a conventional hard drive and not a n SSD, I'd keep the APS installed. If you feel that it interferes with the operation of HDD, you can change the settings and make it less sensitive.

My $0.02 only.

hi, I'm using t420. I've replaced the HDD with a Crucial M4 SSD. I have some questions. The HDD will stop when a shock detected by TheThinkvantageActiveProtectionSystem. But now i'm using a SSD, I don't know that the Disk can be caused by stopping when a shock detected. Should I worry about it?

Answer:The Thinkvantage Active Protection System-Lenovo airbag protection

An SSD has no moving parts so there's no need to run APS. If you don't have any HDDs inside your T420, e.g. in the Ultrabay or mSATA, you can just uninstall APS altogether.

ThinkVantage Update is showing an update to the APS.  New version is 1.77.0.8, current version is 1.77.0.5.  When I install then restart it just says 'one update failed to install'.  How can I install this? [Edit] I uninstalled it then ran the update and it wouldn't download.  So I went the Lenovo driver download website and noticed that 1.77.0.5 is the current version for my computer, so maybe 1.77.0.8 doesn't exist?  I downloaded 1.77.0.5 and reinstalled that, 1.77.0.8 is still presented by the update program though.  Why is the Update program suggesting it then?  This isn't the first time I've have ThinkVantage Update present the wrong drivers.  http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-Can-t-install-updates-for-Intel-WiDi-or-W...

I dropped my laptop. (ThinkPad T60p)

At Boot time I get the message: Thinkvantage active protection sensor diagnostics.
Then: hard drive not found.

When I replaced the HD with a new one and tried to re-install the OS from the CD I get the same message:
hard drive not found.

What is Thinkvantage active protection sensor diagnostics?
How do I fix the problem?

Answer:Thinkvantage active protection sensor diagnostics

Hi Eugene-Verne,While installing Windows from the CD, did you set SATA AHCI to Compatibility mode in the BIOS? If the answer is yes then the hard drive connectors on the laptop may have been damaged due to the fall.Additionally, you can try running HDD diagnostic program from the BIOS to see whether it is even being detected by the BIOS.Hope it helps.

One morning after I shutdown my laptop to leave for work and start it up again on the train. It gave me the: 2000 thinkvantage active protection sensor diagnostics failed. Everything is working fine. Is there a fix for this? Edit: I realised this is in the wrong section. Can someone help me move this please? Thank you.

Answer:Thinkpad L430 Error Msg: 2000 thinkvantage active protection sensor diagnostics failed

Does this error only happen when you start up your system on the train, or does this error always happen when you start your system?

Active protection (APS) is the HDD airbag function, it detects when the system is moving then it parks the HDD heads in order to prevent damage, until the system stops moving.

APS is initialized by BIOS when the system is turned on.  Part of the initialization is running diags on the sensor to make sure it is able to detect a non-moving state.  If the system is being moved while this happens, then the diags fail and that error message happens.

Is it good to be running the APS or is it only needed if I ever drop the computer? Why are there two different beeps, one is louder and longer, the other short and quiet.......... whats the difference between them? Its weird because I only had one of the beeps for about a month and a half. And can I run APS but turn off the beep (dont recall seeing an option for this)? It beeps a LOT on the less sensitive setting even.. even being gentle picking it up...

Answer:Active protection system

The APS parks your hdd head when you accidentally drop it, while the resting hdd can usually take 240 to 400 g shock, a working hdd with the head assembly reading the platter usually can take 50 g, which is equivalent to 1 m fall. However, it depends on the angle of drop so a failure of the hdd is possible even you drop it at 20 cm. The head assembly is only around 0.1 mm from the platter, and any scratches to the platter will cause irreversible damages to the data. Regarding the beep, i am not so sure.

After getting my new Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB drive working with my X60 Thinkpad (1706-M7M) running XP Pro, I noticed that the HDD active protection system has disabled itself. Is it not compatible with my new drive?

Answer:X60 HDD Active Protection System

You have two accelerometers now! Your ThinkPad has one (Active Protection), and so does your new hard drive (Seagate G-Force). I don't have personal experience with this, but it's possible the Seagate G-Force software disabled Active Protection. You may be able to re-enable it and run both in parallel. I have no idea how they interact. Either one should be sufficient to protect the drive. Perhaps someone with experience could chime in?

Hi Ellen and welcome to the forum, You can find the 32 bit version for Windows 7 here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-53150 You could also download and install Lenovo System Update:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-73695.html System Update will check for new drivers and software from Lenovo for your computer and give you a list where you can choose what you want to download and install and it will be installed for you without having to download and install each one of then manually. It should also give you the option to download and install Active Protection System. It's also a nice tool to check for new versions of the drivers and Lenovo software for your computer. -gan

Hello! I?m hoping that someone here can answer this question ? is APS running all the time, even if the laptop is at a Windows login box with the lid closed? I work as a tech at a K-12 school district.  In our JH/HS building, we have 18 Bretford carts with 14 Thinkpad laptops on each (a mix of R61 and R400 machines, all running APS).  Once the laptops are started each day, the teachers want to have students log off instead of shut down before placing them back in the cart and taking the cart to its next assigned classroom. The classrooms in this building have a ½? lip at the doorway that cart has to traverse when going in and out.  Of course, the teachers have the students take the carts to their next location instead of doing it themselves, so the carts tend to get rough treatment especially when negotiating that doorway lip.  I'm not aware that logging off and closing the lid will park the hard drive head.  If APS isn?t running all the time the laptop is turned on, then there is potential for hard drive head damage during transport, and we would insist that the laptops be shut down for transport to their next destination. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Active Protection System question

APS is NOT running as a service.

The Startup will be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and will be executed after login.

Hey, I got this problem. I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 64-bit on Thinkpad Edge 15 and I downloaded this great tool Active Protection System, which worked perfectly on my Windows 7 before. When I open up the program and shake my laptop it shows that shock is detected and shows that harddrive is stopped and while watching a movie the picture doesn't freeze, which means it isn't stopped. The sensitivity is set high and I disabled "Apatively ignore frequnet shocks". Is this a common problem for Win 8.1 or do I have to install something more?

Hello, I am using P70, and installed M2 SSDs for system partition, and replaced the SATA HDD by SSD.It seems to me that active protection system is no longer necessary for this configuration,However, the active protection system background application is keep running.I consulted Lenovo engineer, he suggested me to go into the device and printer menu, and then turn off the protection.I found that there was no such options inside the menu, and it was not provided at Lenovo settings either. It seems to me that although the resources that the app is taking is not much,if the user feels it no longer necessary, there should be a way to stop running it,in "Official, Supported" way..Is there such a way that I haven't tried? Or is it not yet to be supported? Currently I installed W10 enterprise on the system over W10 Pro, which was preinstalled. If it was the cause of the problem, I am also curious that is it legitimate to me to ask for any patch (or anything...) for this kind of problem. Thank you in advance.

I just had the very same problem with a 10A5 0006 (M93 without "p"). Customer reported the issue on Friday, 8th of May after apparently suffering silently through the issue for a few days already, saying that it becomes worse, and that he has to restart the machine sometimes every quarter of an hour. Thankfully customer was able to say that the problems started in the last week of April already, and indeed, on the 16th the machine last installed Windows Updates, and on the 19th the aforementioned Active Protection Of Doom 1.0.0.21. I already began back tracing (read: uninstalling one by one) the updates from that day when I stumbled over your post. In all fairness, I would probably not have even touched the Lenovo update, thinking first of a MS foobar. This post saved me from having to invest several hours of time, not to mention that I will be now prepared if the next machine with the similar issue comes around the corner (I need to service roundabout 50 M93p's from the last half year, I betcha there will be more) Thanks

Hi all, I have a 500 GB hdd 7200rpm which I purchased from lenovo and a hdd caddy which is the slim one (so there is a slight gap for those that are curious) on the thinkpad t510. what i am wondering is i have dual boot on it (linux on the 500gb) and i am wondering if when I am using windows, does the second hdd still get protected from shocks and other potentially damaging harm from the active protecttion system which is present for the hard drive which came preinstalled on the laptop

I plan to replace the OEM hard drive on my ThinkPad X60 with a Western Digital Scorpio Black drive. I found a board posting on Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Forum site that seems to indicate that APS will work with this drive. Here is my question: Is there any point in purchasing the drive with the free fall sensor option? (This is more expensive than the drive without the sensor.)  Will this provide any additional protection above and beyond the Active Protection System. Will the internal free fall sensor in the drive be compatible with APS?  In other words, should I buy a Scorpio Black with or without the free fall sensor? Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad X60 Replacement Hard Drive - Will free fall sensor work with Active Protection System?

Welcome to the forum! If I were buying a replacement drive, I'd get one without a sensor, but that's me.Having seen way too many laptops that have gone through a real "free fall" I'll say that a damaged hard drive in such an event is usually the least of one's problems...Good luck.

Hi , I just wanted to say after lenovo update's very useful update, my pc now takes a good minute after boot-up for it to be responsive. Now, after boot, the connecting to internet circle just spins and stops. during this time, nothing else can be opened. when i click on itunes, the win 7 icon shows that it is active and then it goes dim again as if it was closed again. nothing works until the network is connected. thanks for the update...not any suggestions to reverse this other than reinstalling win 7? or do i just have to deal with this inconvinence since lenovo doesnt realize their update actually messes up their systems?

Answer:After Bios Update through thinkvantage, takes forever for PC to be active

Wireless or wired? Using access connections? You can try to go to device manager (in control panel under administrative tools) and uninstalling the offending network adapter. Then, reboot and let it find new hardware. You may need to reenter the wireless encryption key.

Question: Active Protection

What active protection are people using and why?For me it's...AVG: Free, low overheads, easy updates, no conflicts, simple to use, has a scary virus alert picture.SYGATE: Free, simple to use, gives good control & information.WINPATROL: Free, simple to use, the barking dog.Needless to say I have all the other anti-everything scanners but only the 3 above are active.

Answer:Active Protection

What is WinPatrol?I make use of the following:Kaspersky Anti Virus 5.0 Personal Warez. Would switch to AVG Free. But works too well for the time being. Sygate Personal Allows for better configuration than the free variant of ZoneAlarm. Program control. Qtec Router filters out everything else.Windows Antispyware Novelty application. Question: Active Protection

Thinkpad 440p Win 10 Pro. I installed Lenovo Active Protection, which shows up in Control Panel as Airbag Protection. Seems to be working as the animation in the Control Panel applet shows motion and protection control. There is no icon in the notification area. As I remember there used to be an icon. Hovering over it would bring up the name TP Shocks, Is the absence of the icon by design?

I can not play leage of legends with this graphic card.It says I do have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 but there is yellow exclamation picture infront, and Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family.  To clean the fan, do I need to open the laptop completely?

Answer:ThinkVantage System Update - "There are no applicable packages found for your system"

The yellow exclamation means you need to install the driver for the mobility radeon. get the drivers direct from AMDs driver page. as for the system update, it just means that it didnt find anything that was out of data on your system,

So I found this as I was trying to find out how to send a false positive to McAfee Avert Labs and was intrigued so I tried it.

McAfee Active Protection

I was first puzzled by its description so I googled it and found out it was actually the Artemis Technology. Here's the article I read about from McAfee:

McAfee, Inc. Reinvents Computer Security

After reading that I was so impressed and tried it. I was not contented of how McAfee secures my PC so I needed to find a way to boost it's protection. When the installation was completed I downloaded some fresh Malware from the Malwarebytes forum and was surprisingly startled as how McAfee blocked off almost every malware I downloaded. I accept any criticism from anybody who hates McAfee but I was proven that I might stick with this one for a while. I am open to any opinions on what I have found.

Answer:McAfee Active Protection

If I can remember correctly, in newer versions of Mcafee Security centre you should already have Artemis preinstalled. And have settings where you configure it (on that install you were talking about, you can't configure it), So there shoulnd't be any need to additionally install it.
But I can't remember clearly. Maybe they have implemented Artemis only for some products.
But I don't think so, I think all McAfee now have Artemis preinstalled eventhough they don;t have configurations.

Artemis is very good addition to McAfee but it's is known for it's relatively high false positives rate.
Basically, Artemis is cloud scanner. If scanner detects something suspicious it will send it to the cloud scan and scan it there.
Detctions from Artemis will be called Artemis! and some new generated number or something like this. So actually you will know that it was detected by Artemis.

So I have taken to watching videos on the bus with my Z60m now, the only issue is that it seems the active shock protection program is kicking in way too much and just ruining my enjoyment.  I turned it to low sensitivity and flicked on the check box for "I ride the bus" and it seemed to help a bit, but only by about 50%. My question is thus: If I just turn it off completely, is the HD inside going to be damaged?  Is this program just extra insureance and not needed for normal things?  I would not mind a bit of insight as to someone one who may have turned it off for a road trip or something.... Thanks !

Ok Admin guru's, im gonna pick your brain and expertise. I work for a local IT firm and alot of our clients are small based businesses and a lot of single customers who simply don't the brain power, time or ability to use indepth spyware removal tools and cleaners other then SpyBot and Adaware.

Those work great, WHEN UPDATED AND USED but my company is really looking for an "invisible" solution to where it will sit byitself, keep most of the basic spyware junk out of a machine, update it self with definitions and be intelligent enough to block bad things and allow good data to flow through without throwing up a damn window every single time asking the customer what to do!

We have been using SunBelts Counterspy as a single client and as a LAN based enterprise active protection on our network for the past few months but there is no way to tell it to shut the hell up. Every single freaking packet that passes through WAN connection it asks the client what to do with it. Hell, half the time I dunno what to do with it, so whats the average consumer going to do? I can't give a seminar to every fricking client on Do's and Don'ts, use Firefox, don't go to bad websites that look like 12 year olds built it, don't use P2P programs.

What have you guys been using/recommending to clients? I could really use some feedback as trying to "teach" people how to use the internet saftely isn't working, especially when it comes to ... Read more

Answer:Net Admins: Active spyware protection. What do you use?

Haven't used Sunbelts version..but most centrally managed packages allow you to create a custom configuration to push out to the clients, making it automatically perform actions based on what you say.

What antivirus are you using? I've seen my clients malware problems take a big drop since moving to NOD32 antivirus..since it's quite strong in ad/spyware detection. Kapersky is also very strong in this area.

Hello I'm planning to buy a new and larger harddrive (500GB) for my x61 tablet. My Question is: Does the Active Protection System (APS) work with any Harddrive which is able to park heads? In asking because I'm not sure, if the thinkPad recognizes movements with a built in g-sensor inside the laptop (not in the harddrive) or a sensor inside of the harddrive (someone told me, that some drives have a g-sensor built in which APS is using)Can I change the harddrive and APS still works ??  Is there something to think of when changing the harddrive (except copying the system ;-)) Thanks for your helpDitschi

Answer:X61 Tablet - New Harddrive and active Protection

Check the manufacturer's hard drive specifications/data sheet for the support of IDLE IMMEDIATE ATA command which the Active Protection System uses to park the drive head without flushing the cache when the APS is engaged. More information @ http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Active_Protection_System I am personally using a WD scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 RPM drive with free fall sensor which appears to support this feature (I can hear the drive head parking when the APS is engaged and all read/writes are halted). Hope that helps.

I've never posted in this forum before (that I can remember) and if this is in the wrong place, forgive me. I just thought this would be the best place to ask.

Found this link over at SlashDot:
http://www.echannelline.com/usa/story.cfm?item=23681

My take on this is that McAfee would like us to think this is some kind of breakthrough; but, the way I read it, it isn't as much a breakthrough as it is simply a shaving of the response time (and eChannelLine having a slow news day).

Anyone care to comment?

Do you recommend joining or not joining the Microsoft Active Protection Service, and why?
I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and in setting it up it makes an offer to join.

Answer:MS Active Protection Service: Should You Join?

I do because their (AV providers) security will improve as samples of user encountered malware are sent back to them. Symantec and many other AV vendors have the same feature... Any reputation-based AV must develop the "reputation" of the file(s) somehow...

I'm looking for a small app that I can install to scan my system for malware.

I do not want "active protection" of any sort.

I don't want new entries appearing in my services configuration.
I don't want any new background processes.
I don't want email, boot sector, memory, etc protection.

I just want a scanner that runs when I tell it to and closes when I'm done.

They don't seem to make anti-virus software like this anymore. Every app I've come across has been loaded with garbage that clogs up your system. You can't even terminate most of these apps without uninstalling them. Not even AdAware works the way it used to.

I've tried AVG, Avast, Norton, NOD32, Kaspersky, and others whose names I've forgotten.

I use Anti-Malware now but that's it. I'm looking for a bona-fide virus scanner of the same sort, but maybe there aren't any?

Hello. I don't know if i'm in the wrong section of the forum, but i can't choose which section to put this topic in, well.
I'm trying to install an program into my friend pc, my antivirus (360 Total Security) is disabling me from installing, well, i tried to disable active protection temporarily, i go to the corner of the desktop. See the file named "Capture" in the attachments
i open the tray. choose protection: on/off. i press off. and there is no buttons on the screen? WTF? See the file named "Capture1" in Attachments
so how i solve this ? FORGIVE ME IF MY ENGLISH IS BAD.
And sorry i can't uninstall this program. as i said it's not my computer

Answer:Can't Disable Active protection in 360 Total Security!

Your English is fine.

Something is wrong as you should have two buttons on your first image (Exit and Stay Protected). Try the following. In an admin account open 360 Total Security settings. Under the General tab uncheck the box next to 360 Self Protection. You will need to scroll to the bottom as it's the last setting. Open Task Manager and under the Processes tab highlight QHSafeTray and end the process. It will be a bit before the 360 icon in the system tray will no longer be present.

Try installing the program. To restore 360 Total Security you can either reboot or double click the desktop icon.

I just bought a new T400 with a 160 GB hard drive, and I have a spare 320 GB hard drive I'm considering putting in it.  Does the ThinkVantage Active Protection work with any modern internal hard drive, or only the ones Lenovo uses?  If it's only certain ones, how can I find out if the one I have will work with it?  Thank you.

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Active Protection on Any Internal Hard Drive?

Hi djshack, Your T400 has a built-in accelerometer ("g sensor") which the Active Protection software monitors. If it sees acceleration above a settable threshold, it tells your hard drive to park its heads. Head-parking is a standard feature of hard drives. Thus the system should work with any hard drive compatible with your T400.

Hey guys

I have a massive drive that I'm afraid is filled with crazy Trojans and stuff.

I want to scan this puppy with as many scanners as possible.

I don't want any "active protection" or any software that will interfere with Windows Defender.

I just want a scanner that will scan a drive.

What I use now:

1) Malewarbytes
2) Emisoft (works GREAT if you haven't tried it)
3) SuperAntiSpyware

Can you guys recommend any light third party scanners to use in addition to this?

Traits I'm looking for:

1) light (no active protection)
2) free

Thanks guys

So naturally I sent it to Lenovo, and somehow after a one day turn around and replacement of the mobo, it was working beautifully. But then I was still getting intermittent BSOD crashes. Though I realized they would only happen when I moved the laptop. The only that would know that I moved the laptop is the accelerometer and Active Protection. After disabling active protection I've been in the free. The laptop finally runs just like it is supposed to. But now I want to get this problem fixed because my mind won't settle if I still know there is a problem. Anyone have any ideas? Or do you think this should just go back to the depot and let Lenovo deal with it?  Thanks!Message Edited by UpIn5mOk3 on 12-28-2008 11:38 AM

Answer:T61p BSOD resulting from Active Protection

well since it seems some moderator (i will not include the name of this person) decided to delete my previous quesion, despite me not breaking any rules, i will ask again: the thinkvantage active protection wont let me change its sensitivity setting regardless that i have tried in my account and in the administrator account to change it, even though the settings are checked so that the administrator only can edit them, and if i was logged into the administrator account, shouldnt i have been able to have been able to change it? i would assume there is something wrong?

Do you think it's worth it to run the active protection on this program?

Answer:Microsoft anti-spyware active protection

If you are not an advanced user or others using the computer are not advanced I would say yes. If you know what you are doing, you should be able to tell when something is f*ing with your system but it is rather handy for people that don't know what that activex control is about to do....

Hi everyone,Eversince I bought my T61p, I have been experiencing bizare hangs, usually when running on battery. The symptoms:All hard disk activity ceases and programs start to hang one after another. The active protection icon is green (HDD is running) but I can't open the application itself. At some point everything freezes, including the mouse. The only way to recover is by powering off. No BSOD or event log entry. When powering on, the Intel Turbo memory reports an unexpected shtudown and initializes itself, showing the progress by printing the percentage. This used to happen after resume from standby, within the next few hours of work.As an experiment I disabled Active Protection and my thinkpad has been working hang and crash free for 2 weeks now, resuming from and going to sleep without any problems. To test if the problem is within Active Protection really, I  enabled it again and I had a hang in the next 20 minutes. I restarted (through power off), suspended the computer, resumed, and after an hour - it hanged.Since than I have my Active Protection disabled and everything works fine.Although I can work with Active Protection off, I prefer it switched on. Any ideas how to fix the problem?I know I am not the only one experiencing this problem (I've seen other similar posts), although it seems that many people still don't know that active protection is the cause.

Answer:Active Protection causes bizare hangs on T61p

Sounds like a software corruption issue.  I have a T61p and the APS works flawlessly.  The APS software is available on the Lenovo support site so you can delete your existing software and re-install it:  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-53150 If that doesn't work, the only solution that comes to mind is to do a full system recovery.

Hi everyone.I have just bought Lenovo Yoga 520 and I was enjoying drawing on screen with active pen. But then I realized that during my research before buying the device I never saw any kind of protection like gorilla glass series on the screen. I use my x200 tablet to work as an audio engineer.  Mostly I use it as a control center for several programs that control audio processors in real-time and are designed for touchscreen use and also to playback and record multichannel audio (with an 18x18 ASIO interface).  Therefore I need my laptop to be as real-time stable as possible.  Picking up and moving the tablet quickly or setting it near an array of 21" subwoofers would set off APS even in its most conservative settings so I decided to uninstall APS. After I did this, my laptop would boot normally until you touched the keyboard at the login screen.  You could navigate with the mouse and use it with the onscreen keyboard to login and use XP, although the touchscreen didn't work.  However, if you touched a key on the keyboard the laptop would cease to receive input from the mouse or keyboard until another reboot.  By using the mouse only and reinstalling APS through System Update I was able to fix the problem. I know I can just turn it off in Control Panel, but to systematically decrease the chance of errors or DPC latencies when I'm dealing with live, real-time audio I would prefer to remove features I cannot use.  Does anyone know anything about this problem?  I saw a few other threads on similar topics and people seemed to fix a similar keyboard problem by setting APS more conservatively, but I don't understand why removing APS all together would cause the same ... My notebook R60e is pre-installed with Windows XP professional edition. After doing a recovery, the blue button stop respond to enterThinkVandtage mode at the start of hard boot. The blue button can function normally (i.e. enter ThinkVantage Productivity Centre)  in Windows XP environment. How to call back the normal function of the Blue ThinkVantage button so that I can enter rescue and recovery mode on hard boot? Thanks

Answer:Blue ThinkVantage button cannot enter ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery mode on hard boot

Hi hkjordan, welcome to the forum, do you still get the message prompting you to press the blue button? If yes, try pressing F11 instead, (it's the old method which still works). If no, it would seem that your mbr, (master boot record) is damaged. The good news is that there is a utility to repair the mbr, the bad news is you will need a usb floppy. Regards

Hello, I'm having a few issues and was wondering if someone could offer some assistance. I have a X200 which is running Vista 64-bit OS. I just completed a clean install of Vista-64. Issue #1 (old *.scr file) - Is it posible to run my old Lenovo screensaver post-install? I saved it as a *.scr file to an external hard drive before deleting everything but the file will not work on my clean system by just copying it over into the appropriate folder. I get an error messasge when trying to preview it from within screensaver options. Does anyone have an excutable version of the "Think" screensaver (circa 2009/2010)?Issue #2 (Previous versions of Lenovo drivers) - In the past it seemed to me that installing new drivers on my system has caused certain components to stop working correctly. For example, after an update to the audio last year, I lost sound to my external speaker and just had audio when plugging in headphones. Does anyone know where I could find previous versions of drivers on a reputable website? Specifically, does anyone have a copy of a previous version (circa 2009-2010) of the Conexant Audio driver/software for Vista (64-bit) for the X200? Issue #3 ("ThinkVantage Active Protection") I installed this software and it is working normally. However, although I've selected, "Show active protection icon on the system tray" the icon is not displayed and I would like it to be displayed. Does anyone know what the problem may be? This happened to me before and I ... Read more

On my x61s, running under Vista, for more than a year I found my system intermittently going into an unrecoverable freeze--but only when the system was running on batteries.  Fix: When I disabled the Lenovo "Active Protection System," the problem disappeared and has not come back. (Merely changing the "shock protection sensitivity" did not work.)   O_GovindaX61s 7668-CTO, Vista SP1, 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 Gig memory, 160 Gig HDD, turbo memory, and Intel 4965 AGN Moderator edit: Merged both of O_Govinda's threads on same subject. Answer:X61s running Vista on batteries sometimes freezing -- Active Protection to blame?

Does it help if you lower the Active Protection sensitivity (Control Panel > ThinkVantage Active Protection)? If not, and you are still under warranty I would call support.

I just installed the Thinkvantage toolbox with the Lenovo software updater.  I also installed the current (3.23?) BIOS.  Tried to install the ECP but the install program said it was up to date.  I installed all critical updates and recommended ones. At some point the Active Protection software (v1.33b) decided its hardware sensor was bad.  I ran the POST sensor test for the sensor which did not complain. I tried to install current version of software.  Auto-install didn't work so I tried manual.  It refused to install because it said that Active Protection was not supported on this computer. I reinstalled the v3.19 BIOS, no change except that the update software now lists that as a desirable update.. Active Protection driver version is 1.35 November 10 2009/1.33 June 6 2005.  Device manager shows no flags and I can't find an entry for the acceleration sensor. Can anyone indicate how I can chase this further, or otherwise help to solve it?  The Active Protection system is very important to me. Thanks and regards,David Beierl

We've been experiencing problems conducting updates via TVSU: "The Package Index Server is temporarily unavailable.  Please try again later."  Walked through the troubleshooting steps to ensure this wasn't on our end & then contacted tech support for confirmation that this is a Lenovo issue. Was informed that server maintenance would cause outages until approx. 2:00PM ET (US), but still have issues almost an hour after. Any updates to the status here?

I've been unable to find help for this problem on IBM/Lenovo's website, and I'm hoping maybe somebody else has run into this. Since I upgraded to System Update 2, which I had to do, otherwise the update system would not function at all - as it required the update.

System Update Error 742: System Update downloads the file and gets almost through the "installing" progress bar, then a message pops up saying, "System Update" cannot find the source folder. The command line option (/S) must use a valid source folder.

The tech guy at my computer place suggested I call Lenovo, but the last time I did that I got somebody who knew less than I do about computers. Not exactly encouraging.

On my ThinkPads, I use the ThinkVantage System Update utility to keep my drivers and BIOS up to date.  Is there a similar utility for non-Think products?  Or, do we have to periodically check the Lenovo support site? I'm specifically interested in Yoga 2 Pro support.
