Preferred Solution: PCI Memory Controller for T500 2081-CTO operating Vista 64

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Evidently the PCI Memory Controller driver is not installed on my ThinkPad T500 2081-CTO OS Vista 64bit and shows up as an error when running the Lenovo System Tool Box. Searching this forum I found one psot as follows BUT thisis for a T-200 laptop. Re: Driver for PCI Memory ControllerOptions ?02-25-2009 06:59 AM You need the driver for Intel Turbo Memory.  Only Windows Vista can use Turbo Memory, so we only have a Vista version for the driver:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67820 Is this driver appropriate? Do I need the PCI Memory Controller driver .. and if so where do I find it for my laptop? Thanks.

Answer:2nd Request - PCI Memory Controller for ThinkPad T500 2081-CTO OS Vista 64bit

I would suggest that you forget about turbo memory. Intel quit talking about it and they have not released a driver since 2009. That is 2 years before service pack 1 was released. I ran tests and I was never able to measure any improvement with a card installed. As far as I am concerned, it is just something else to break and interfere with other components.,

Answer:Display Driver keeps crashing - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 on T500 2081-CTO, Vista 64

Hi, otisbd

Could you please elaborate on how this issue occurs? Are you receiving an error message, a blue screen, etc.? Also, has this always occurred with the external monitor attached, or have there been times when the driver has crashed with just the laptop LCD running? Apologies for all the questions, but I am just trying to better grasp of where exactly the problem lies and how we can best go about solving it.

Thanks in advance,Adam

Question: T500 2081-A28

I just ordered on 12-25 one of these from Lenovo as its an in stock special. Was able to find out some of the configuration but am unable to find out if it has Bluetooth installed. If not I would suspect I can order thew Bluetooth adapter from Lenovo and install it my self. Its an EE T500 Model 2081-A28. Inputting 2081-A28 into the Lenovo site says they never heard of this model but they are selling it for $1099.00 in their web page its pre configured. Any way of getting a copy of the complete configuration as the sales page jumps right past any configuration to the software page and then to ordering. it has the processor, screen specs i want. Oh anyone running Linux on a T500, if so what distribution? Thanks Gary Fiber K8IZ

Answer:T500 2081-A28

I am wondering why this unit does not appear on the Lenovo site. Is it a real T500 or counterfeit Lenovo is selling. 2081 comes up but A28 is not listed nor found. Entering in the number 2081-A28 gets me no place. I want a product listing of this build also an operators manual neither are available. Amazing. Gary Fiber

Updated from Windows Vista Business 32bit  to Windows 7 Pro 64bit and now  I can't modify my bios settings.  It says all the settings can't be changed.  All of the settings remain unchanged from when I accessed it under Vista, but can't be modified now that Windows 7 is on there.   I updated to the latest bios it did not help.

Answer:T500 2081 Bios woes

I was reading through a pdf file that said:"Note: If a supervisor password has been set by the customer, BIOS Setup Utilitymenu appears after the password is entered. You can start the utility by pressingEnter instead of entering the supervisor password; however, you cannot change theparameters that are protected by the supervisor password." problem is when I hit f1 to get into bios it prompts me for the computer password, and harddrive password, then goes into the bios with the choices restricted. If I'm restarting the computer I only get prompted for the computer password and into bios with restrictions. I tried the supervisor password in place of the computer password and it didn't work so I'm unsure if I should be seeing a 3rd prompt or not.  I haven't tinkered with this my husband normally takes care of the computers.

I am creating this thread as adivced by Agotthelf, one of Mods here...I am a proud owner of Thinkpad T500, I purchased ma T500 2081 CTO from US last Christmas.I recieved the same on January 2010 and I had created the recovery disks using Lenovo tool, ie the boot medium and data medium.. As I had created the Recovery disks I deleted the Recovery partition (Q Drive).Due to several errors and problems that crept in, i tried to bring ma laptop to factory setting using recovery disks..But, the recovery medium seems not to work as expected. The boot medium doesn give a factory restore option , it only provide two Win7 recovery option, ie 1. To repair a Win 7 installation2. To restore from an image backup. Both doesn work with the medium i have in hand..Then I tried Thinkvantage recovery by pressing F11 and here I got the Factory Restore option, but it couldn validate my recovery DVD and says Backup image unavailable sort of error..With all these i got fed up and completely formatted ma Hard drive, and I placed a call to Lenovo Service Care (India), as I reside in India...And to ma utter despair they told me that they couldnt service ma laptop just because i deleted the R&R partition (Q drive), and the reason they give is that lenovo want its clients to have a R&R Drive...And they gave two other options, ie to Pay a sum of Rs 1675 (Approx 40$) to repair the windows installation or I could use any pirated or unlicensed version of Operating system...Well , as per my knowl... Answer:Help Regarding T500 2081 CTO Recovery Disks

Hello manuv, This is  nasty situation.  You have my sympathy. I don't have a way to duplicate your configuration just now.  Pardon me if you've already tried this, or it doesn't apply. When you boot your recovery CD, is there an "advanced" option.  Is there anything there that lets you use your restore image? BTW, I did the same thing you did with my T400.  IIRC, when you first access the Q partition, the TP will offer to delete it and add the space to the C partition.  It will also offer to make recovery/restore media first.  Doing so is certainly not an error on your part. In the past, when I had an issue with home-made restore media, TP support has sent me factory media.  That is in the US at least.  They may charge for them these days, but perhaps that is an option for you. Good luck,Z.

I recently upgraded by HD to a faster, larger HD. Cloned the original, repartitioned it, installed it. Machine booted up and ran fine until a few weeks later I get the Windows Genuine Advantage message that I don't have a genuine copy of Windows 7 Professional (which was installed on the machine from Lenovo). After a couple of calles to Microsoft, I'm told that Lenovo only licensed Windows 7 Professional for the old HD. I would need a new copy for the new HD. Is this stupid or what? Called Lenovo and they basically said the same thing. They offered to sell me recovery disks that will get me back to the original factory configuration - less all the programs I now have installed. Does this sound right? I asked them who I can complain to and they said "no one". I can't tell you how angry this makes me. Replacing HDs is pretty routine for any PC, desktop or laptop. That's usually the first thing that goes. Now there is no neat way of recovering from that or if you just want to upgrade your drive? How stupid is this? Any suggestions?

The previous windows 7 coming with this laptop is fine but the system crashed when I tried to partition the disk with some software. I got two recovery CDs from IBM support center in the US with which I got the current windows 7 OS. It can find wireless network quickly and make the connection correctly. The problem is that when I move my T500 out of the region with wi-fi coverage, the system looks confused and freezes. There is even one time it freezes when I manually disconnected the wireless connection. I have to power off the laptop to restart it every time it happens. Does anyone have similar experience before? Or any comment? I am not in US now or I will call the support center promptly. Thanks a lot!

In the last month or two, I have been experiencing issues when putting my T500 2081 (with dedicated graphics - currently using Energy savings mode, or integrated graphics) into sleep mode. In the first month or so,  the computer sometimes made a long sequence of beeps when I tried the wake the machine up, then computer then would restart and get stuck at a black screen. (A forceful shutdown was required to reboot the machine) (Power indicator on, sleep indicator off) Since then, I never got the beeps anymore, although it has progressed to just being stuck after the machine is awakened. (While the power indicator shows that the machine is on, the sleep (moon) indicator remains lit.)  A force shutdown was still required to reboot the machine. Now, it again has progressed to something totally different. When the computer awakes, the power will completely shut off for a second (it makes the same sound that is made when you forcefully shut down your computer),  then the computer turns on again, but gets stuck at a black screen. (Power indicator is on, sleep indicator off) Once again, a forceful shutdown was required to reboot the machine. If I were to look in the System event logs, it would see this whenever it freezes up after being awaken:"The last sleep transition was unsuccessful. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, failed, or lost power during the sleep transition." Interestingly, the computer would only freeze ... Read more

where can i find download broadcom's management control suite, so that i can use it to find an ethernet controller driver for my D600? I was able to update all other drivers under the Device Manager tab except this one.

Answer:ethernet controller driver for D600 Vista Operating System

Are you using 32 bit or 64 bit Vista?

In Device Manager, please right click on the device and select Properties,
then select the Details tab.

In the dropdown box, please select "Hardware ID"
Then, please give us the 4 characters immediately after the VEN_ and the 4 characters immediately after the DEV_
We'll use that info at http://www.pcidatabase.com to figure out exactly which piece of Broadcom hardware it is. Then we can search for compatible drivers with that information.

I've just reinstalled Win Vista and now I've got 2 items listed in the device manger with big exclamation points. The first is "Mass storage controller" and the second is "PCI memory controller".

I've already installed the Intel drivers, what drivers do I need to get these two devices to work?

Answer:Missing drivers for PCI memory controller after Vista reinstallation

For XP: Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager.
For Vista: Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager.
Right-Click on the Unknown Device, and select "Properties".
Go to the "Details" Tab, select "Device Instance ID" or "Hardware Ids" in the dropdown list.

You will see something like PCI\VEN_????
The VEN_ number is the Vendor or Manufacturer. For example:

8086 = Intel
10EC = Realtek
168C = Atheros
14E4 = Broadcom
1022 = AMD
1106 = VIA
11AB = Marvell Yukon
104C = Texas Instruments

Is this the Device?

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_444E = "Intel Turbo Memory" (Robson card)

Hi all.We just bought a T500 and, as a test, I'm loading Windows Server 2003. We use 2003 for demoing the software that we sell.Unfortunately I cannot get the Ethernet Controller installed. I've tried both the driver offered on Lenovo's website and the driver on Intel's website. Either way the driver won't stick. It's the Intel 82567 Gigabit Ethernet Controller in question here. Our T500 is the 2055-45U.In Device Manager, both the Intel and Lenovo supplied drivers won't install. Intel also has an executable installer which gives the error "No Intel Network Connections found on this computer."I know Windows Server not officially supported on laptops by Lenovo but I have to get this to work.Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?Thanks in advance.Loof

Answer:T500 Ethernet Controller driver for Windows Server 2003

I am actually having the exact same issue. I have a new T500 that I have restaged with Windows Server 2003 Standard R2, but I cannot get the machine on the network. I contacted Technical Support and they directed me to the Windows XP drivers (don't officially support Windows 2003). I have tried the Windows XP drivers that were provided on Lenovo's website for the Intel Pro/100 Ethernet driver (Support confirmed this was the version of NIC in the laptop) without success. I tried downloading a version of the driver directly from Intel with similar results. The setup claims "No Intel Network Connections found on this computer- no drivers were installed". Anyone had any luck getting the network drivers installed on a T500 restaged with Windows 2003 Server? Thanks

HiI recently got a T500 with 2x1gb memory. I got an offer to upgrade to 2x4gb at a good price, however there is a catch: the 4gb modules are Hynix 12800S modules (2Rx8 PC3) from a more recent Txxx model, so it's faster than the Lenovo recommended PC3-8500 modules for T500. So my question is: will the "too fast" memory work at the lower clockspeed?ThanksLars

Solved!

Answer:"Too fast" memory in T500

Yes the faster RAM will work, however, it will only work at PC3-8500 1066MHz speeds.

The limitation is enforced by the speed of the memory bus in the T500, not the speed of the RAM.

Answer:T500: Memory Upgrade

The ThinkPad T400 and T500 datasheet states that it can handle up to 8GB of RAM, so it should work unless you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, in which case the maximum RAM that can be addressed by the OS is 4GB regardless of how much RAM you install.       The Windows license key is valid for both 32 and 64-bit, but to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, you would have to uninstall and reinstall Windows. Windows Install Media Download Links,https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Hope that helps,

Answer:T500 - Low memory warning

Sounds like you're trying to run Vista with less than 4 gigs of RAM, which is a big no-no if you expect performance orstability. I'm no expert on Vista - Vista is not designed to work in my application, so I have limited experience with it - but I've been through a few dozen XP systems and never seen or heard of that problem.

That sounds a little odd since the ram slots are located in the middle almost underneath the touchpad.  I upgraded my T500 to 2x2GB (Patriot) as well and haven't noticed any heat issues.  You mentioned Nanya boards.  Is it from G.Skill?  My palmrests have no noticable warm spots whatsoever. Are you using a PCMCIA or Express card of any kind?  I know when I use my Audigy 2 ZS card, it gets hot enough to heat through the left palmrest.

I have a T500 and the specs say it will support 8Gb of DDR3. I am running WIn6 x64 and I updated the bios to the latest and greatest. Unfortunately when I put in 8Gb of memory I get some post errors. Each dimm works by itself, so the memory is good, which it is brand new so it should be, any thoughts? Frustrating since I have almost $500 invested in memory. I purchased 8Gb DDR3 1066 PC3 8500

Answer:T500 Memory Upgrade

tjnf04, Glad to see I'm not the only one with the exact same problem.  I am running Win 7 x64.  I can put in each new Corsair 4G DDR3 1066 PC3 8500 SODIMM separately and no problems, so I know the memory is good as well.  I can also put in new 1x4G and an old 1x1G for total of 5G and it works fine.  But put in 2x4G and get the beeps 1-short, pause, 3-short, pause, 3-short, pause, 1-short when powering up. So much for supporting 8G!  Hope we can get some answers soon!

I know that this might be an old question, but I coudn't find a good answer to it. I am trying to upgrade my memory to 4GB, currently 2GB. First question - Do I need to buy a 4GB kit to benefit from dual channel property or if I just buy another 2GB memory the dual channel willl work? Second question - Which meory do you recommend? I already know that I have to get a PC3-8500 204 pin SODIMM memory, but can't figure out why some brands are compatible while othere are not. I want to choose from the following list. Crucial 4GB PC3-8500 204 pin  SODIMM   and Mushkin 4GB PC3-8500 204 pin SODIMM. Any other recommendation is also appreciated. Greetings to all,

I'm operating Windows XP and installed Audigy Sound Blaster and driver from Audigy online, but still no sound. I went to Control Panel > Add Hardware. The panel says that my Multimedia Audio Controller is not operating because the driver is not installed-Code 28. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Please use proper thread titles from now on. Thanks.

Answer:Audio Controller is not operating because the driver is not installed-Code 28.

Try reinstalling the chipset driver off your motherboard cd and then reboot...then reinstall the audio driver and reboot...that should solve your problem

If you dont know these details, use the following program to post back your mobo and chipset details..

Hey guys, I installed vista about a month ago and things worked fine.. Something caused multiple reboots (perhaps corrupts system files) that I couldn't fix and formated and reinstalled..

I installed immedialty the newest nvidia drivers for my mobo (evga 750i ftw) restarted, then installed newest nvidia drivers for my 8800 gt sli cards. Then I installed the latest drivers for my X-Fi card (same way I did first time).

Now immediatly no sound works..
In the device manager I have:
C-Media USB Headphone Set - Not functioning correctly (because sound card isn't).
X-Fi Sound Blaster - Not Functioning Correctly
-Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
PCI Device - Not Function Correctly (It's the PCI controller)
-A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)
SM Bus Controller - Not Function Correctly
-This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

Now I've looked online to see IRQ conflicts and whatever in common with this problem, but not certain of the solution. I've uninstalled all the drivers and tried reinstalling everything, but to no avail!

Any ideas, cheers!

Have you tried reinstalling your chipset drivers by chance? Or was that included in the "reinstalled everything" ?.

Hello, I've recently purchased a Lenovo T500 Thinkpad Notebook. And this might be a fairly easy problem to fix, but JUST to be safe. Whenever I use the Sound Recorder, after recording and I click the stop button, a window pops up saying the following: Not enough memory available to complete this operation.  Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again. If you recall I've stated that my Lenovo Thinkpad T500 is new, very new, no more than a few days new. I don't see any applications running. So what could be my problem?

I have about 100 T500s I am getting prepped for rollout and buliding a Windows Vista image for them.  When I have the Intel Turbo Memory driver (downloaded from the Lenovo site for the T500) installed, the machines will not come out of sleep.  They either blue screen or just sit at a black empty screen until a hard reset it done.  Removing this driver makes everything run without any issues.  Is there something I am missing about the drivers for the Turbo mem?  Is there an install order of drivers I am screwing up or something?    I am only using driver downloaded from lenovo for the T500.

I am trying to upgrade to 8GB of RAM in my trusty old T500.  I bought 2x4GB G.Skill sticks that appear to be compatible in every specification.  Here is the riddle:1) Both sticks are rejected when inserted into the lower slot.  I get a 1-3-3-1 beep every time. 2) One stick works in the upper slot with the original 2GB stick inserted in the lower slot.  I ran 6 passes of Memtest86+ on this configuration without seeing a single error and the computer is clearly using all 6GB of memory after booting. 3) The other stick will not work in the upper slot with the original 2GB stick in the lower slot and even Memtest86+ freezes with this configuration when I am able to boot at all without getting a 1-3-3-1 beep at power-on. It seems clear that one of the sticks is bad.  I am at a loss as to why the other stick will work only when paired with the original stick and only in one particular configuration.  The BIOS has been updated to the lastest version, 3.23. At one time, both of the new sticks would work individually when inserted in the bottom slot with nothing in the upper slot.  However, this was always inconsistent and neither one has worked in that slot since I disabled fast boot. My best guess is that some setting is being read from the old 2GB stick when it is in the lower slot that also works for the one good new stick.  As to what that setting might be, however, I am completely at a loss as the specs for the new... Hi all,Few days ago I had complete freeze on my system, I had to press power for several seconds to turn laptop off. Later it booted OK, but I had a message to test my memory using built-in diag. I tried, but it freezed about 45%, I left it for whole night, but nothing more happen, besides fact that laptop in the morning was horribly hot, I wasn't able even to hold it from the bottom. I have 4GB in total, in 2 modules, so I tried to test modules separately, but test freezes on both modules. Memcheck runs OK from CD, but WMD no. I can boot into Windows (32bit), but I noticed it says 4.00 GB installed, 2.4 GB usable (???). I'm pretty sure before those troubles it showed 4GB and yes, I'm aware of 32bit Windows in terms of memory.Laptop is on 3y on-site contract, but to be honest I'm not sure what to tell support guys.Should I leave it as it is (even if I don't like this idea), or call support and ask them to do something about it? My last experiences with support were not the best ones, I had an impression I know more about Thinkpads than they do.Any thoughts appreciated...Chris

Answer:Intel Turbo Memory on T500

If you are using the default installation your Turbo Memory should already be in use. You can turn it off or change what it is used for in the utility you should find in the Programs menu (as I am not typing this on my T500 I am not sure under what name it is, should be something like Intel Turbo Memory). But you probably don't need to change any of the settings. By default it should be set to use both ReadyDrive and ReadyBoost. I have it left on this setting. Many people argue if it has any use at all - I think it does become useful to speed up things.

Hi there, I am having trouble with my newely installed 2GB stick of ram. Let me step back and explain exactly whats was going on.  I purchased a new T500 in September and it arrived in early October. It is configured with Windows Vista Business 32-bit and 2GB of memory. I decided to keep some of the Lenovo Thinkpad software so I felt that my system was running a little slow.So I went on Newegg and ordered another 2GB stick that can be found here. After the ram arrived I installed it and first checked BIOS. BIOS was reading 4GB. Now I understand that I have only a 32-bit version so the 4GB will not be completely recognized. So, when I start windows and go into System from control panel it also reads 4GB. However, when I go into task manger it says that the total physical memory is only 2519MB!!! Thats a mere 500mb increase from what I had before. Now, this is my first experience with Vista and so far I was pretty happy. I have a desktop with 32-bit Window XP Pro setup and when I installed 4GB of ram on that the system managed to read 3.5GB. I dont know whats going on with my laptop. So in general can someone explain to me whats going on??? Why is task manager only reading my 4GB config as 2.5GB??? And what is the best way for me to switch my Vista Business 32-bit to the  Vista Business 64-bit version??

This is not about my system it is about another system...
Someone I know is getting a lot of blue screens randomly but quite often, there is nothing really connecting the BSOD's except the same message some of the time... Memory management... but there were about 3 other BSOD codes given at different times.... Ran Memtest over a weekend, found memory 11 errors, replaced all the memory, still getting BSOD's, ran CHKDSK /B and SFC /scannow as well as startup repairs, and windows repair from the disk, and despite everything showing as OK, she is still gettings BSODS....

So now I'm down to analyzing the dumps, I've gotten as far as opening the dumps up and being able to read them, but I can't make much sense of what could be the problem from here... I have two dumps from today, from what I can gather, its still the memory even though its 4 different chips... Now I'm trying to figure out if its the memory or maybe the motherboard? I don't know if I'm even able to figure that out by these logs... Any help in deciphering these logs, or other tips of how to properly figure this stuff out myself would be greatly appreciated!

We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

It is almost impossible to spot trends from a single DMP file so if you have more than one please upload them. If you only have one please wait until the computer crashes again then upload both.

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).

I've reinstalled Windows 7 Pro 32-bit on a T500 with 4 GB of memory.  However, I noticed that when you look at the computer properties, it indicates: Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (2.46 GB usable)  I have to admit that I don't recall seeing something like this on a Windows system before, though admittedly I wasn't specfically looking for it. I have no idea if Windows was indicating this before I rebuilt the OS on the system.  When I look at the Performance tab in Windows Task manager, it also shows maximum physical memory as 2,520 MB. I've found articles which do indicate that Windows will generally not be able to use all physical memory (though again, I don't recall seeing this "usable" indicator on other systems), but this seemed like a bigger drop than I would have expected for memory taken up by other things besides the OS, and that it's such an odd number.  I spoke with a colleague who is much more familiar with PC hardware, and he told me to check the BIOS to ensure features like memory shadow mapping is disabled, but the T500 doesn't seem to have really any memory config options other than to run checks at startup. I've tried running the Windows memory check utility (where it boots into the test program and you're to be able to see the results when Windows restarts).  The test progresses, but it seems to keep hanging on the second pass and doesn't complete, though it never indicated that it found any problems. So my q... Answer:Windows 7 x32 reports odd memory amount on T500

Some additional information: - have updated the BIOS to the most recent version for this model, even though it was just one rev beyond what it already had and the only change was a new feature (no fixes).  As expected, no change. - ran msinfo32 and it confirms what I see under computer properties:Installed Physical Memory: 4.00 GBTotal Physical Memory: 2.46 GB - ran msconfig and under the boot tab->advanced options, I made sure the "Maximum memory" box was unchecked. - installed the Lenovo Solution Center app and under memory on the System tab, it shows this:Interesting that this utility seems to think that I have the full 4GB to use; not sure where it's getting it's information. I'm about to run the memory test in this utility to see what that says. Update: the memory scan test in Solution Center passed with flying colors, and it also seems to indicate that it can see all 4GB of memory:  So what I'm confused about is if Windows *thinks* it only has 2.46 GB that it can use, wouldn't that also include the apps (like Solution Center) running in it?  Unless there's more to it than that, how can Windows apps like this touch memory beyond that "total physical memory"?

Answer:T500 - 2242 CTO model Memory Upgrade

Hey there manoj_ce,

To ensure we can advise you on the proper amount of memory your machine can handle and should use, what operating system are using with your T500? I see you say Windows 7, but is it a 32 or 64 bit system?

According to the PSRef (around page 381) the machine can recognize a maximum of 8GB, PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3, non-parity, dual-channel capable 204-pin SODIMMs.

Under a 64 bit OS you could use 8 GB (ex. 2 x 4GB), and with 32(x86) bit OS you can use 4GB(ex. 2 x 2GB).

I've spent hours - days actually - narrowing this down. It started when W7 crashed with a memory error going in to safe mode. I ran Memtest86+ 4.00 and it hung (locked up - requires power off) in test 8 - modulo 20 random pattern. This was 100% repeatable, always on the first pass, but how long it ran was slightly variable. I tested with each memory stick (2GB each) alone too. Window 7's own memory tests hung within a few minutes every time too. Lenovo Toolbox's memory tests passed cleanly however (which just goes to show they're not much use). After running and re-running memory tests until I'm sick of them, I've finally figured out that having VT enabled is fine as long as VT-d is not. Neither are default for the T500, which probably means Lenovo haven't thoroughly tested them and also limits the problem to people who want to run virtualization software and have enabled them. While testing discovered that running Windows 7 memory tests with the cache disabled works (albeit incredibly slowly). My conclusion therefore is that VT-d is causing some kind of cache coherency problem when enabled.

Answer:T500 cached memory tests hang with VT-d enabled

Hi Graham,

My T500 Type 2242 has been running stably for nearly a year now with both VT and VT-d enabled. Memtest reports no problems; I run Linux, no experience with Win 7. I'm currently using BIOS 2.16 but had no trouble with earlier ones either. I'm running (2) sticks 2GB Crucial RAM (had to RMA one of them, it failed Memtest when new).

Could you please post your machine model number (7 digits XXXX-YYY from label on bottom) and some details of the RAM you are using? Did you purchase the RAM from Lenovo?

Best regards,
Frank

EDIT: It's probably worth burning the PC Doctor CD, booting your T500 from it and running all the tests. Maybe your CPU and/or system board are the culprit(s)?

I had my T500 built with the Intel 2 GB Turbo Memory Hard Drive Cache. I think I read some where (help me decide info on the web order site) that it would make the Boot process faster. The only way I've found to confirm that it's even installed is that it shows up under Disk Management as Disk 0, Online, Simple Layout, Type is Basic, No Volume Information and the Staus is Healty (Primary Partition). While I'm waiting on my W7 upgrade to show up I thought I would try and discover how to use this option. Any suggestions on where I can find reference material on how to use this feature or figure out how it's currently being used with Vista Ultimate? TIA for any help.Bob Helms

Answer:T500 Turbo Memory Hard Drive Cache.

I've answered my own questions after doing further research. For those who don't want to spend the time here's what I found out. This option is basically an 'expensive' flash drive that is used for "ReadyBoost". Vista ReadyBoost support is considered lame by all who blogged about it. Windows 7 ReadyBoost support is somewhat more robust although IMHO you can do just as well with a 8 or 16 GB flashdrive and spend a lot less than the cost of the internal option from Lenovo.Bob Helms

Hello, I've had my laptop for a number of years now with no issues until recently.  The display no longer works at any point.  I can see it on an external monitor, but am starting to miss the freedom of having the laptop I can take anywhere.  When the lighting is at the right angle I can see that the display itself is working, but it is too dim to make out anything but outlines.  From what I could find I'm led to believe that my backlight is the issue.  Is there a way I can definitively figure this out and fix it myself?  Thank you for any help, if any more details are needed or I'm not in the right forum please let me know.  Thanks!

I have a T500 (2081-CTO) with Vista Business 64 SP1 and a 2GB Intel Turbo Memory module.  7200RPM Hitachi Drive HTS722016K9SA00. As delivered with driver version 1.6, the Intel Turbo Memory Console showed both ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive checkboxes checkmarked (enabled). Upon driver upgrade to 1.7.0.1029 (Via ThinkPad Update), the ReadyDrive checkbox is no longer checkmarked.  ReadyBoost remains checked. I am able to manually add a checkmark, after which the utility tells me I need to immediately re-boot.  I do so, but, once re-booted, a check of the Console once again shows that ReadyDrive is NOT enabled. Any ideas? Possibly related:  The Hitachi hard drive spec sheet does not specify an SSD-like cache.  My understanding is the the drive comes with an 8MB cache, as most drives do.  However,the Device Manager properties tab for the drive shows a tab called NV Cache, which states that "This disk has 396MB of non-volatile cache and can help improve system performance.  If using this disk as a Hybrid Hard Disk is enabled..." Well, I used gpedit.msc to make sure all the NV Cache policies are DISABLED. (Incredibly, the setting of DISABLED is supposed to ensure that the use of these technologies is actually ENABLED.  Thank you, Microsoft). Where does this value of 396MB of cache come from?  Is that from the Intel Turbo Memory? I suspect the '396MB' value is actually hard-coded text in the dialog box. ... Read more

Hello all,I've been reading what I'm able to find on the subject, and have tried the following suggestions from (http://www.ocmodshop.com/ocmodshop.aspx?a=989) to bump up the amount of physical ram that Vista sees. I've tried to forceenable pae, and then :Type BCDedit /set nx AlwaysOffType BCDedit /set pae ForceEnable Setting DEP off, and neither had any effect on the physical RAM available. I read a few posts hinting that these options may be unecessary in SP1 of vista as well. So, here are my questions : 1. Is it possible for the T500 with 32-bit Vista to address more than 2.5gb of  physical ram?2. If so, how can I do it?3. Am I eligible for a 64-bit version of Vista with the recent purchase of my T500 and Vista Business? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks much all....

It looks like it should work, but sometimes, particular types don't work on a particular machine. I always suggest buying from a seller with a good return policy.  I have never seen a problem with Corsair Vengeance, but others have different favorites

When my husband and I were on vacation our kids somehow wiped the Vista operating system off their computer. The message when I boot up in F8, ( if I am remembering correctly), says that there was a problem in reloading Vista and I need to insert the Vista disk. Problem is, the computer didn't come with a recovery disk, we just got the computer, and I hadn't gotten around to making a backup disk of Vista. I am afraid that now I will need to purchase the Vista operating system and use that to fix their computer. Unless anyone has another idea? or does anyone know how to fix it without reinstalling?
Thank you so much, I have been rather frustrated wit this!

Answer:Kids Wiped Out Vista Operating System, No Vista Disk

hi sweetie,,lol,,,, it maybe that your pc cannot load the os, so it is still probebly still there but something has gone wrong and it will not load, its asking for the disc so it can recover the corrupted parts or put back deleted parts,,, or something in the regestry has changed that it dose'nt like,,,,, if you have any friends with vista and they have a recovery disc try there's and this should sort it out,,, your just recovering the os not installing it so dont reformat anything as this will compleatly wipe your HDD. If you dont know anyone with a disc then try a pc shop and they should be able to do it for a small fee,,,,,,, another way would be to take it back to the shop you got it from as it will still be under warrinty as it is new,,, tell them you dont know whats wrong with it and let them fix it,,,, living in england i would go for the latter as they have no choice under consumer law here,,,,,,,, good luck

Answer:T500 running Vista Business SP1 32-bit only uses 2.5 Gb of the available 4Gb RAM

32 bit OS can only address around 3 gig of ram, regardless how much you have physically installed. In addition your ATI GPU use hypermemory so preallocated itself 0.5 gig of ram for vram use. The only remedy for your dilemma is to get a 64 bit OS.

Standard answer:  install Win 7, then install ThinkVantage System Update and let it pull down the appropriate apps and drivers. I don't know if it's the best way, but maybe it's the easiest. Z.

Hello everyone! I've just bought my first Thinkpad, a T500 notebook, and it came with the required discs, and documentation, to downgrade from Vista to XP.  When I did this, I decided that I actually WANTED to use Vista (I know, I can never make up my mind). But when I try re-installing Vista with the Recovery DVD I created with the Restore disc creator before I downgraded, it won't allow me to re-install Vista. I've checked the hard drive in XP, and it appears that the Lenovo restore partition (set as drive Q is now gone! And when I try re-installing the system from the CD I made, it just re-installs XP. I'm wondering what I've done wrong, and if I actually HAVE done anything wrong. Is there any other way of restoring Vista? Does the warranty cover this if I need to get it professionally re-installed? Help, please! CJ

I recently got a new T500 Thinpad and it's great, mostly. I have some issues with its wireless networking and questions about display properties, but I can mostly live with it. Surprisingly, I even like Vista Ultimate (which I ordered to get the Win XP Recovery DVD option in the event I was unhappy with Vista). Now I'm starting to look at other options, such as 64-bit Vista. Here's my question. If you buy Vista Ultimate from MS, they give in the box both Vista 32-bit and Vista-64 bit.  Having bought Vista Ultimate 32-bit preloaded from Lenovo, do I have any options on acquiring Vista 64-bit? I can obviously not buy it from MS as an upgrade, since it would mean I'd have to purchase the entire Vista Ultimate package again and that's in the region of $250. I did look around on the Lenovo support site, but didn't find anything that seemed to addres this issue.Message Edited by mpbrede on 01-25-2009 11:39 AM

Answer:Vista 64-bit options on Thinkpad T500

If you are really keen upon upgrading I would suggest looking into aquiring an OEM disk. As far as I have seen these can be purchased at a much lower cost than the full Vista Ultimate package. (Typically around $180)  A second (possilble) option: I have heard that Microsoft offers a 64-bit "upgrade" disk for essentially the cost of shipping the disk. However, since you had Vista 32 installed OEM by lenovo I have my doubts that the upgrade would be accessible due to licensing restrictions. Third option (The one I used, similar to #1 yet possibly somewhat "illicit"): I managed to find a Vista Ultimate 64 OEM disk. I used the product key used by Lenovo to install Vista Ultimate 32 (find it on the bottom of your T500) for a full reinstall. Microsoft (here so far) has given me no difficulties.  I am sure you are already aware, but just in case you are not, to save you the shock: Upgrading from 32 to 64 entails a full reinstall of everything, drivers etc. The contents of your drive will be wiped during the install. Best of luck

Hi
I have 3 Yellow ! on these:

OTHER PCI BRIDGE DEVICE
PCI MEMORY CONTROLLER
SM BUS CONTROLLER

What can I do to fix this? Is this motherboard related?

Thanks

Answer:Pci Memory Controller

I assume you are looking at the device manager window? Have you tried clicking on them and installing or finding the driver for that specific hardware?

Even with these alerts, does your system run fine? No other problems other than this alert?

I just formatted and reinstalled from the recovery cds under the factory condition option, but I can't find the driver for the "PCI Memory Controller" as it's called inthe device manager. I suspect it may have been on the supplemental CD which I cannot now find.  I don't think this the turbo memory, but I'm not sure.   Could someone point me in the right direction?

Answer:PCI Memory Controller

 If you have no clue what that is, I recommend using 'System Update.' It will find appropriate drivers and install for you. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/TVSU-UPDATE.html

do memory controllers generally have to have an IRQ? My BIOS just shows up as N/A for the memory controller.

On start up my 3 year old desk top running Windows XP Service Pack 3 is telling me it has found new hardware - PCI Memory Controller - and the usual request pops up regarding searching for drivers etc. Under device manager the PCI Memory Controller is listed under 'other devices' with a yellow question mark. I haven't added this 'new' hardware and wonder if there is a problem somewhere. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Answer:PCI Memory Controller

In devices, disable it and see if that makes any difference. Loads of entries on Google about it, no apparent 'fix' though.

Hello,
Have you tried installing Lenovo's ThinkVantage System Update software on the ThinkPad?  It will automatically detect and download missing device drivers and ThinkVantage software.

I have T61 Type 7662-CTO.  Since I installed Window 7, I am unable to connect to my wireless network (hard wire is fine), and unable to use the printer.  During an attempt to troubleshoot for the printer, I came across that there is a driver problem with PCI Memory Controller.  I have no idea what it is.  I would appreciate any advise you could provide.  I am very frustrated for not having wireless network and printer. Thank you,

Answer:Operating memory Win32/Olmarik.T

step 1

Run tdss killer from http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

let it cure anything it fnds ( except SPTD.SYS or anything detected as UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic, which should be ignored) & then reboot

post back with its log

By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder.
Logs have names like: UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
E.g. C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.7_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt
