T410 - Black screen, power on, no light on monitor

Question: T410 - Black screen, power on, no light on monitor

Hi, Yesterday I came home and was about to use my T410 like I sometimes do. I turned it on, the computer loaded the ThinkPad screen and then quickly showed me a "Fan Error" in the top left corner. I took the computer apart and saw that the fan wasn't moving like it should. I tried to clean it without taking it apart any further but that didn't work so I took the fan out and cleaned it. It is now spinning smoothly again. However, after putting it back together, when I turn it on the power you can hear the laptop turn on but the screen stays black and there are no lights flashing on the monitor. My question is, why is my monitor not turning on? Side note: While taking out the fan I swiped my finger on the thermal paste, I'm going to re-apply some thermal paste between the heat sink and the cpu later today (any suggestions on how I should clean the old thermal paste?)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: T410 - Black screen, power on, no light on monitor

Hallo and welcome to the forum You should remove any old thermal grease and apply new thermal grease before you turn the computer on. The Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) has instructions on how much thermal grease you should apply. To clean the cpu in my notebook before applying new thermal grease i have been using isopropyl alcohol in the past.

alright, I just got this inspiron 6000 from my sister that didnt work. she said nothing would happen at all. well it turned out the power light would go on, caps lock light blink for a few seconds and it would turn off. somehow the memory wasnt in the slot very well. bam, got it working, dumped all her pics and crap to a external hdd, and wanted to wipe it all out and start over. she is sending me a xp disc, but for now I just figured Id go back to 2k cuz I have that disc and when I get the disc go back to xp.

anyways, I couldnt figure out how to format the drive, because obviously xp was running off of it. anyways, I kept trying all the del - f2 - f8 - f12 to get a dos prompt before windos would load but I couldnt. so I figured Id just put the 2k disc in because I thought I remember that it formats it right before it installs. but it asked me where to install and the disk was partitioned and I wanted one drive letter so I cancelled the install, before it was actually installing though, said f3 to quit and I hit f3. now when I try to power it up, the power light comes on, the hdd light comes on for maybe 1-2 seconds max, then the cd drive light comes on and it spins up, then stops, and the screen just stays black, never did anything either. just black the whole time.

I cant use a floppy to try anything because no floppy drive. I tried starting up with the win2k disc in but doesnt work. I searched on my desktop running win2k and it showed a tutorial for making a usb flas... Read more

Answer:Windows XP, power light, hdd light for 1 sec, black screen

oh, also, i did try and search and most I found were a black screen after the self test or the windows logo, not right away.

also, dont think it matters, but when the lights go out, it is at the point where hitting the power button again, the computer instantly turns off.

also, just checked, and its nothing to do with the lcd. I just hooked up my monitor, and my monitor tells me when there is no signal, and it just stayed black, then when it was unplugged from the laptop that is when it said no signal.

Answer:Black screen and no lights flashing on monitor on t410

Welcome to the forum!

Is the fan connector properly attached? And did you remove the battery when you were doing the fan swap?

If you have an external monitor you can try connecting it to to the T410 and check if you get video output there. Also check if the LCD cable is properly connected.

This morning I was working on my laptop and all of a sudden the screen went black as if it went into hibernation.  I can vaguely see images on the screen and managed to turn it off.  I removed the power cord and then the battery for 10 seconds.  After putting the battery back and plugging the computer back in, I turned it on and got a very dim and flickery screen, which last for less than 5 minutes.  Now it turns on and is a dull orange-ish color and lasts about 2 seconds.  What do I need to do?  Is it time for my laptop to see a mechanic???  HELP!! THANKS! (Laptop is a R40e from 2004 and runs on XP)Message Edited by Cllynn on 11-12-2008 04:44 AM

Welcome to the forum! Chances are that the backlight (CCFL) in your LCD has gone bad. Your best bet is to swap the whole LCD. Good luck.

Hi, everyone. I have an Acer Aspire E3-112 netbook suddenly stop working. The battery is charging when plugged in but when power button was press, power LED no light. I have done some research, and done the following but didn't work.a)  Unplugged charger and remove battery. Pressing down power button for more than 60 sec.b)  Tested RAM and it is still good,c)  strip down everthing and waited for 30 minutes. Then press power button with screen connected. Noticed the CPU is warming up.d)  Tried pressing power button with HDMI cable connecting to my TV,  When I hold down Fn + ESC while powering up with a USB Stick of BIOS files (2GB), the USB drive flashes once every 30 sec. I am convince that this is probably a sign of life and it can still be saved. I noticed that the BIOS update file from Acer website is for Windows mode. Is there anywhere I can download the BIOS file which can be updated on Boot-up (so call freedos). The warranty is over, I am asking for help. Many thanks.

I have a black screen on my Acer Apire 4552 Laptop. I am fairly good at fixing computer problems, but this has me stumped? This is what I have done so far:

1. Took off the battery and held down the power button for 2min, then plugged the power back in without the battery and nothing happened. tried this also with holding down the F8 and also again holding down the f10 button. Nothing.

2. I thought it was the hard drive , so I had bought a new one and put it in and hit F10 and my computer started to boot up! So I decided to put my old hard drive back in and by chance it came on and started to boot up also. I was very happy and I used the computer for 1 day with my power cord plugged in, but when I unplugged it and went to plug it back in later and use it again it was back to the dreaded Black screen!

3. As suggested, I took my computer back apart and pulled out the both RAM memory cards and cleaned them and tried switching them in each others slot as suggested and re-booted the computer multiple times, but to no avail. Still nothing?

4. Another thing I notice: My battery had gone bad a year ago and I bought another one and had been using it fine, but it does get much much hotter than my old one as it runs. So I don't know if it is shutting down over that or not? I put it in the freezer for 15min as suggested by others and tryed turning it on again, but still nothing!

ANY SUGGESTIONS??? IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

Usually computers shut off to prevent damage from overheating. i would check to see if the fans are even working or it could be that the motherboard has gone bad.

Hi, I have an old Aspire 9300. It was working good up to last week but now all I get is a black screen, no cursor, just green power light. I do not hear the fan also. Please help if anyone has had this issue and got it fixed. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:BLACK SCREEN, NO CURSOR, just power light- Acer As...

Try connecting the unit to another monitor or TV via VGA cables.  If you get the same black screen, it is likely the graphics card.  On most Acers, the card is embedded in the motherboard.  Acer discontinues parts rapidly. You may have to settle for a refurbished "certified" board from Acer.  They're costly and are warrantied just 30 days.  Even Acer doesn't believe in their products!

black screen on startup, monitor standby light is on

I have a dual boot macintosh/vista machine and it has worked fine for a long time until recently. when i switch the computer on the monitor is black and the standby light is on. i made sure the cables are all plugged in correctly! when i unplug the monitor from pc it states that an "input is not detected" but when i plug it back in, it's just black. i swapped the monitor with a working one and same thing. black. so i assume it is the computer itself, but dont know where to start! help!

Answer:black screen on startup, monitor standby light is on

Are you comfortable with opening up your computer?

If so, remove the graphics card and reseat it. To remove the graphics card, you will need to push on the two clasps that hold the graphics card in; they should be on the sides of where the graphics card meets with the motherboard.

If that does not resolve it, try removing the graphics card and

[u]se an ink eraser or an electrical contact treatment, available at electronics supply stores, to ensure adapter card contacts are clean

The above was taken from: Bug Check 0x7A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.

As you add and remove hardware, follow these steps for ESD safety:Shut down and turn off your computer.
Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

Hello,

I am having quite a problem with my computer:

After a while of idling, or in the middle of a game, the screen will go black, but the light on the monitor stays green, indicating there still is a signal.. i think. This is on my 21' CRT. So i tried another monitor, an LCD , while this is happening (the green light no picture business), and i get the message 'Mode not supported'. I see the video card fan is still going, and I'm really not sure what is wrong.

Also, sometimes when i try to turn the computer on it won't react... but a few mins later as if by magic it turns on by itself.

If you could help me out that would be most excellent, the computer i am on now has Intel Extreme Graphics 2 onboard video, and it is painful to play any decent game on it.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Screen going black - Light on Monitor stays Green

Sounds like your video card is going out, or not getting enough power. Check your PSU, maybe try reinstalling the video card drivers.

I had a simular problem, my monitor would go blank on about the 3rd 3d Mark test, then several minutes later my score would pop up on the screen and I could see my desktop. Got a new GPU, everything is working fine.

Good luck, hopefully someone else will have some more infor for you.

Hello all, I have a mysterious problem dealing with starting up my computer.I will try to detail everything I have done. The computer I have is a Compaq Presario V5000T Laptop. It was running service pack 3, XP home, and 2GB ram. Everything else on it was factory. The ram was recently installed, factory ram was 512MB. (About a month ago- upgraded to 2 GB)Also, the AC Adapter wire was torn a few months ago, and was replaced 2 months ago, but not with a compaq standard adapter. (I bought a generic one with the same specs.)The laptop has been running fine for the last 2 months, and had no issues with anything. But yesterday, as I was browsing the internet, the computer suddenly turns off.  (The battery and ac adapter were both plugged in.)I though the ac adpter may have gotten loose, so I replugged it in, and then tried turning it on. This did not work. I was late for class, so I took off without testing it further.I came back about 8 hours later, and tried to turn it on again. (Battery and AC adapter both in) It turned on, and I was able to use the computer for about 15 minutes. When all of a sudden, the computer turned off again, with no warning. However, this time, when I attempted to turn it on, it fails. I hear the cd drive running, but nothing else happens. The screen remains dark, and the other major sign is the the Power button (IO) constantly blinks orange. The LCD light on the panel also blinks (IO) in the same fashion. power light comes on but the screen remains black there is no sound nor any flickers please help operating hp 2000 dual core windows 7 thank you very much!

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

I work in a corporate environment and we order hundreds of machines from Dell.We ordered the E7270 last year and loaded Windows 10 PRO on them and have had nothing but problems.I opened a case with Microsoft and contacted Intel, but they said to contact Dell. We only have hardware support, not software support. Issue at hand is that we have version 1607 Build 14939.1198, I know this is not the latest, but we can not upgrade to the latest until testing is done. Looking over the other versions , I don't see anything that would be related to resolving my issue. The machines are on a domain, and the end user logs onto the computer and it should populate the name and log in. Every few days it comes up with Other User and spins, and can spin for hours. Unless they click CTRl/AL/DEL and it will log in.Microsoft tells me that that they see a 20 seconds delay on a file that was traced back to Intel.Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Utility. This is has to do with handling the thermal on the CPU, fan etc. They can replicate this only when they shut down, Windows 10 says it is shutting down, but the power light stays on for 2 minutes and the screen is black. Then when they boot up they have the same issue. We also have the issue on E5250 models as well. At first, yes we had the motherboard replaced on one of the models but the issue came back so it is not hardware. I'm thinking this Intel software is the culprit, but since it is packaged by Dell, Intel won't he... Read more

NOTE: Moderators, if you feel this issue would be better suited in another sub-forum. Please let me know.

Okay so starting sometime this morning I have started having an issue with my displays. (My system specs are in my profile.) I am running a dual monitor setup with one being a Dell U3415W and the other being a Vizio M65-C1 65" 4K UHD TV. I use the one monitor to do work and the TV for entertainment (movies, games, etc.) so here is the problem. Up until this morning everything worked as it should. If I was watching a TV show or something I could turn monitor 1 off and back on as necessary without disturbing what was going on, on monitor 2. Now when I turn monitor 1 off and then back on I get nothing but a black screen. I am able to fix this by unplugging the monitor from the back of the computer, then plugging it back in. everything seems to work fine after that until I, once again, turn the monitor back off.

While monitor 1 has the black screen, I have checked display properties using the TV and it shows the monitor is still detected, and the proper resolution. Also, the monitor itself acts as if it is still functioning because the "no signal" image doesn't appear and it doesn't go to sleep it just stays black.

I am completely at a loss for what could be the issue. Thanks in advance for any help anyone is able to offer.

This is my first post! woot woot.
anyways.. I search the forum, nothing really to my problem

I have Windows Xp and I have two monitors hooked up to the computer. My larger monitor does not work anymore. The screen is mostly always black but the power button stays on... if i play around with it and click the input button i can get the desktop to come up but it flickers and lines goes down the screen and still is unusable--- after about five mins of this, it just turns black anyways

I switch where the monitors connect to the computer, but still the larger monitor does not work. The smaller one still worked fine. Its the monitor itself... well... its not the graphic card in the computer or dust or anything was where i was trying to get at..

I also changed the screen refreshing to 60 hertz, changed the color quality to 16 bit as well as change the screen resolution to the lowest it can go, which is 800 by 600 pixels

I can't think of anything else to do?
Please help..

Thank you.

Hey guys, usually pretty self sufficient when it comes to hardware issues but i have no experience with monitors going awry and seek some advice.

The issues a relatively simple one, when first starting the computer there is a problem with the monitor getting power, the power light stays off and the screen, completely black flickers making a clicking noise gaining a very slight gain in brightness all the while the power light staying off.

After unplugging from the power, and disconnecting the vga connection a couple of times eventually the power light comes on and the screen works.

During use there are no issues with the picture and it works fine, it is only when the computer has been shut down and the screen off for a period of time i have this issue getting it back on.

Any help as to what it is appreciated i suspect it has come to the end of it's life as it is almost 3 years old now.

The monitor in question is a GNR, showing as a plug and play on devices and running of a gforce 8500 gt.

Thanks in advance

Vannyg

Can you try another VGA cable or is it hardwired to the monitor, like some are ?

Running on Windows 7.I've read similar problems that others have posted, which is the monitor goes black during bootup. My machine boots fine, but every few minutes the monitor goes black / dies - no backlight. This lasts a minute or so, then the display go back to normal. Then it goes black again. Then it goes back to normal. It's not sleeping, the HDD keeps on spinning. I've checked the graphics driver - no update available. I reinstalled it anyway. The built in lenovo help utility -thinkvantage- is of no help. At this stage I'm wondering about the integrity of the motherboard. Help! And thanks in advance.

Answer:T410 monitor goes black intermittently

Hi GenghisK,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you facing issue with Screen going blank on you ThinkPad T410.

Have you checked with booting the system into safe mode?
Boot the system into BIOS mode and keep it for more than 15 min to verify whether the issue persists in that.
Check with external monitor to confirm with Display issue or with No boot issue.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hi guys,

I recently built a PC and I installed Windows 8 x64 on it. I have high performance set as my power profile. I have the monitor set to turn off after 30 min of inactivity. When I return to my PC after 30 minutes or more of inactivity and I move the mouse or hit buttons on the keyboard sometimes the screen just stays black. It won't recover. Therefore, the only option I have is to restart the PC. Does anyone know what I can try to resolve this? I am using a ASUS LCD monitor which is attached to CFX Dual Sapphire HD7970's.

Another problem I have ran into with Windows 8 x64 is when I go into the services there is no description for them. When I notice this has happened I have found that all the default power profiles are missing. I can't figure out what the heck is causing it but I have seen that other people have had this issue as well. However, I haven't been able to find much info on the problem. When I did a Google search I found one topic saying it has something to do with a driver in AVAST which I was using at the time. However, I believe it has something to do with disk and registry cleaners. I have had to reinstall about 10 times due to this happening. I have tried using different cleaning utilities each time. I have tried CCleaner, Wise, and a few others. However, after each install I kept installing AVAST. I did a clean install yesterday and this time i am just using Windows Defender and Windows firewall. I am going to see if it happens ag... Read more

Rocky- As you have a Radeon try this- Go into Services and see the status of the AMD External Events Utility. It may be disabled by default and could be the root cause of the issue. Set it to Automatic and reboot. Let us know if this helped.

My T410 is less than 3 months old. In the middle of using the computer (docked, using HDTV as monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse), the screen went blank and I got this black screen on the laptop: "Windows Error Recovery:  Windows didn not shut down successfully.  If this was due to the system not responding, or if the system was shut down to pretect data, you might be able to recover by choosing one of the safe mode configurations from the menu below...." I was not doing anything unusual.  The next time I turned on, Internet Explorer recovered at least one of the previous open sites. Where can I get the details/reason for this crash?  There was no code in the error message.

Hi Everyone. I have an Edge 14, about 18 months old. While web serfing yesterday, the screen suddenly went full black. The red power light stayed on, but the laptop was completely unresponsive to ANY key that I tried. Tried to play a DVD-still no display and it did not sound like the DVD was spinning at all. Tried plugging into my TV with the HDMI output-no display on computer or TV. I was able to turn it off with the power button and found that the display would come on if I kept the laptop off for a while, but after a few minutes, the same thing would happen. The longer I keep the laptop off, the longer it will stay on before going black, but never more than 5 minutes or so. Taking some on-ling advice, I tried holding down the function button for 10 seconds and toggling F-7 on and off-neither worked at all. HELP!

Hi:

This evening I decided to reboot my personal computer, which uses Vista. Up until this point it had worked fine, including earlier today. Every time I attempt to reboot it, it starts by bringing up its normal white screen about being a gigabyte motherboard. It then never shows any of the data involved with the reboot - instead, it goes straight to a completely black screen, and stays on it indefinitely. There is a blinking green light on the monitor. As the light blinks, there is a faint "clicking" or "flickering" sound.

I have attempted multiple computer restarts, adjusting the monitor cords. None of it has had any effect. There is no error message, at least not that I've had the ability to see. As I cannot see anything happening on the screen, I do not know if this is purely a graphics problem or if there is also a problem with the computer.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Dear experts, in my case the system won't go into standby or hibernation. In 80% of the cases, hibernation/ standby does not work. In 20% it works... In 80% I get a black screen as if prepairing for standby/ hibernation. But instead of entering standby, the systems does not turn off. There is a slight harddrive activity, pressing mute/ unmute button still works (light on, light off), pressing mic on/off but does not work anymore. a very strange system state. Only possibility is to press system on/off for 4 seconds and reboot... I updated all Windows 7 Updates that said that they are connected to hibernation/ standby problems. I used SystemUpdate and updated all Lenovo Updates that connected something like that. I updated the BIOS. Nothing helped...  :-( Does anyone have a solution for the problem?

Have you installed Windows 7 Update Module KB981112? I did this and got big problems setting the computer in sleep mode by closing the lid (blank screen but the computer is still on). When uninstalling the mentioned update, the hangings went away. Strange behaviour since the update is supposed to solve exactly problems of this type.

Hi all, I have an insteresting issue, i have a acer aspire 5552g running win7 and the latest bios (upgraded it to try to fix this issue) I see when looking at google that there are quite a few Acers that have a similar problem and i think i have tried most if not all of their fixes.  The issue is that you turn the laptop on, and the power lights come on, but nothing on the screen.. no post, nothing.. i can hear the hdd, dvd and fan start but the screen stays blank. i saw of some forums that it could be a corrupt bios so i used Acers flash utility to upgrade the bios from 1.3 to the latest.pressing PF2 or PF8 to jump to setup or safe mode does nothing, sometimes.. and i do mean sometimes, pressing FN and ESC will get it to boot to windows, but it is rare and this issue is very intermittant. I have tried removing the battery and the bios battery, and discharging the power by holding power key for 30 seconds, and starting on mains, but no luck. if and when i do get the machine to go into windows, it seems to behave itself most of the time.. although i have noticed that on a few occasions (even when im in the bios) the touch pad and keyboard stop responding? very weird.. if it only happened in windows i would suspect driver problems, but in the bios as well???? does anyone have any suggestions for a fix please?  i am pretty tech savvy and can strip the laptop down if needed. Thanks Enopho

My system is 2 weeks old.  This Friday it started exhibiting unacceptable behavior.  After resuming from hibernate on 2518-AJU (i5, Optimus graphics, bios 1.34) I get a black screen entitled "windows resume loader" which says "The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed.  Attempt to resume again".  There are two choices: "continue with system resume" or "delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu".  The behavior after choosing "continue with system resume" is inconsistent.   Sometimes it resumes fine, other times it proceeds to system boot menu and will only boot in safe mode, sometimes it boots fine from the boot menu.  This occurs after the system has been in hibernate mode for ~15 minutes or more. Installed an addition 4mb RAM for a total of 6mb.  The behavior started 8 days after the memory upgrade so I do not think it can be traced to the new memory. I ran a complete system diagnostics test, disabled the optimus graphics, disable AMT, disabled hibernation - rebooted and enabled hibernation. Any idea what is causing the resume failure in the first place? Thanks, Stu

My t410 was working fine and then crashed suddenly. I then turned it back on and got the BSOD several times, hit F8 and tried to repair the laptop - it said it could not be repaired and to try system restore point. I did the system restore point to July 31. I restarted the laptop and still got the BSOD. I then did function F8 and tried the factory reset/restore. I restarted the laptop and got to the install windows screen, proceeded to select language and name the laptop, then it shut off again. I tried to turn it on and now all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left of the screen - and it hangs on this screen permanently. I turned it off and restarted and got the same result. I can hit the blue thinkvantage button during the initial startup - but I am not sure what I should do at this point. The laptop is 3 years old, and I have had no problems up until this point. I do not need the data on it, I just want it to function.

Are you able to get into BIOS by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad screen?
Do you have anything attached like a flash drive, etc.?
Have you recently installed any new hardware or software?

Hi.

I have a LG TFT monitor from 2009. A fews days it was troublesome in getting a display. I pulled out and reconnected the VGA connector and rebooted. Eventually I got the display back. However now the power light flashes and there's no display.

Last night I left it running and it said something like 'no signal...' with circled circles. I rebooted a spare PC and it was working again. This morn it's back to a flashing power light and no display. Is the monitor finished?

Update: I left it running and connected to my spare PC for over 15 minutes and the display just returned. :confused

Answer:LG monitor power light flashes and no display.

If you can borrow another monitor and VGA cable, I'd hook it to the PC and see what happens.

If the other monitor shows the same problems, it's likely a problem with you PC's video card.

If the other monitor works, try the old one with the different VGA cable.

If neither of these solve them problem, the issue is with the old monitor itself.

Hi guys, first post I was hoping you could help me out.

What I have going on is this:

I'll leave my PC on for a few hours and all of a sudden my PC will lock up. The screen's will go black and my mouse and keyboard will stop working. Heres a key, I have a USB mouse and the lights will go off on the mouse.

I have hibernation turned off
I have screen saver turned off

All power seems to stay on the machine but nothing is working and i have to power cycle for it to come back. Now I noticed this happening as soon as the air conditioning came on in the house. So i went and bought a UPS, but that has not fixed the issue. I've monitored my CPU and it's far from over heating. I have the log constantly written out to see that. I was using Core Temp for that.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

My event viewer is empty, so i'm not sure at this point...

Answer:PC Randomly freezes/power cycles and black screens and mouse light goes out.

Does this happen ONLY when your AC comes on in the house?

Try running in Safe Mode, does it happen then?

What are the temps..do you have temperature reading software installed? (such as Speedfan)

A friend says this SYS Technology, Inc. monitor was working last time he used it, gave it to me. Does not have DVI, just VGA cable. Model SYS-15L-C-JT, label says it was made April 2002. I cannot find any SYS tech support. I'm looking to see if this thing is dead or if what's wrong is something simple or what. Is there a diagnostic program I can download?

I have tried a few things, like changing the sequence of connections, but it seems not to respond to power button or other controls on front. Each time I plug it in to power source (whether or not it's connected to PC) power light flashes green and it clicks every second or so. There is no picture nor status message onscreen.

Hello there!I've been using this monitor for 7 years and I have been encountering this problem for 2 years every time I start up my computer. Now I finally decided to seek solutions for this problem. My monitor power lights up for 3 secs and it disappear for 1-2 secs and lights up again for 3secs and this goes on for 10-15minutes before it could finally show the screen. So it is like 10-15 minutes of black screen and no sign of power. Pressing menu or other buttons doesn't work because it doesn't have any power in it. So I tried a different cord and it has the same problem. I tried a different monitor and both cords are working fine. It is only the monitor itself and I was wondering the monitor could be worn out or there's something wrong with the monitor. Thanks for reading and I hope to receive your help as soon as possible!

Hi My F1904 monitor seems to have a fault. When I power it on the power switch flashes amber and I get no display. Any suggestions? There does not seem to be any mention of this in the documentation. Many Thanks

Answer:F1904 Monitor flashing amber power light

amber usually means sleep mode. flashing can mean different things. Disconnect the video cable, turn it off, pull the power plug, wait 10 seconds, plug it in and turn it on. Press the OSD buttons to see if you can bring up the on screen display. If that comes, up try connecting it again. Hopefully the PC is not sending out a bad video signal.

I was on my computer one morning and we happened to have a power flash, quickly on and off. Afterwards i turn on my computer, everything comes normally, gives me the safe boot option, i start up windows 7 log in and it freezes, on a side note that is very unusal. I've had my setup for a month now and not 1 freeze. Afterwards anytime i attempt to turn on my computer the monitor stays amber and nothing shows, no bios nothing. I've tried tried multiple things such as replacing the power supply, running bare minimum (1 stick of ram, cpu, cpu fan and power supply without graphics card installed), Ironically im in a nerdrage rush to get it fixed by 11p.m. central time tonight, a new game i've been preparing for with new comp upgrades and such for months comes out on midnight and i very much so intend to be there for it.

my computer specs:

3.3 dual core am3 socket processor
9800gt xlr8 nvidia graphics card
2 sticks of 2 gig 1333mhz ddr3 ram
600w Power supply
500 gig sata harddrive

im running windows 7 professional 64x

i was running a 480w power supply when the power flashed, i bought a 600w today.

I recently returned home to find my monitor completely blank. At first I thought it was just in standby but when I tried to activate it, nothing happened. I checked all cables, unhooked the monitor, restarted the computer. . . still nothing. It is not the computer because I have hooked in an older monitor that works. . . sadly this monitor is about 10 years old and still running fine. The flat panel vs17e is only about 3 years old. Anybody else have issues like this? Is this typical of the hp 17 flat screens? If so, it is sad to see quality reduced as technology increases. Any help would be appreciated.thanks

This happens off & on: My Gateway 5458E desktop will turn on, but the power light doesn't come on (should be blue) & there is no signal to the monitor. The computer powers up, can hear sounds (fan, etc), keyboard lights up, can see light from dvd player, but nothing on monitor & no power light. Have tried a different monitor with same results. The computer has also turned itself off while working ok a couple of times & wouldn't restart correctly until next day, but most of the time this happens when I try to do a restart or just turn on computer after being turned off. What could be causing it to start sometimes & not others? Thanks!

Answer:Gateway desktop turns on but power light not on & no signal to monitor.

A failing Power Supply sounds like the root cause of this issue.Any local computer store will be able to help you with one. The power supply is one of the most important parts of a computer. If they offer something really cheap, eg $30 it is not very good quality, the higher quality the better.Assuming you are using the machine as standard, a 350W PSU will cover you, however if you plan on getting a graphics card to play games or video edit ect a 500W minimum should be followed.

I have a T410 running Windows 7 SP1, with an NVIDIA NVS 3100M display adapter. When I have my laptop connected to an external monitor (using both monitors) the laptop screen flickers. I have observed it when connected to two different monitors, one plugged directly into the VGA port on the laptop, the other being the monitor connected to my docking station when I have the laptop docked. It seems to only happen when I move the mouse, if I just let it sit it doesn't seem to happen. The external monitors do not flicker, only the laptop screen. The laptop screen does not flicker at all when the laptop is not connected to an external monitor. Any ideas?

My computer has a partitioned hard drive and has both windows 8 and windows 7. I have only used windows 7. When I turn it on sometimes it will load all the way to my windows 7 desktop then it says the display graphics quit working and then goes black but the screen is still light up. I have a NVIDIA graphics card. Can someone help me figure out what the problem is and help me fix it.

Answer:screen glitches and sometimes will light up but is still black

Welcome to sevenforums.

Fill in all your system specs in your profile, the best that you can.

That sounds like a video card not getting enough power, (or is broken) like if you booted up and forgot to connect a 6pin power connector or PSU could be too weak (broken?) to handle the card.

Or a heat issue on the video card itself, like thermal paste and/or heatsink fan failure.

The monitor itself is still on, totally from it's own power.

I would acquire a Linux distribution LIVE disc and boot to it [makes no changes to hardware at all] and if it runs perfectly for a while, than it's not a power issue. [distrowatch.com for various flavors of Linux, get a Live that fits on CD if download size is issue]

So in summary, probably a video card failure due to lack of power issue or heat, swap the card out for an old one is first thing I would do and clean out case and check all the fans involved.

Replace paste on video card and retest if you don't have a spare old card.
Artic MX-4 is recommended thermal paste, $10 gets you multiple applications of it, I'd replace it anyway.

You able to boot into safe mode?

Firstly, the information on stickers on my laptop: ASUS R700V (Intel CORE-i7, 36300M, 2,4 GHz) with OS Win 8.

It suddenly wouldn't start up anymore, only in the safe mode [F7]. I thought I should fix this by telling the system to restore itself, but in the process I selected an "essential windows update" to be deleted. After this, the laptop would only start up to a black screen, which has a light behind it (so it is not the black of a screen which is turned off). I took the battery out, and hit some keys (no, I do not know why) and suddenly there was the cursor-arrow! Just a black screen to click on, but the arrow is there.

I have no clue what is going on.
As for the lights at the icons below the keypad, the one with the lightbulb and the wireless signall are burning, the one with the cylinder flickers and the one with the battery is naturally off as the battery is out.

Any ideas?

Answer:Black screen with light behind it - how do I get passed it?

No big deal, if I were you I would run startup repair using the Windows 8 boot menu, which you get to by pushing F8 at startup (I think). Startup repair might work as well. You can also try booting from a Windows 8 boot media and selecting (repair my computer).

Good luck,
-Ben

I need some help. I have acomputer monitor that is roughly 10 years old. THe monitor last night decided to suddenly turn off and the power button started blinking. I unplugged the power to the monitor and let it sit overnight. This morning I went and plugged the power back into the monitor and pressed the power button on it. When I pressed the power button the button started blinking again. I have never had a monitor die like this and I would like to know why it died and if it can be fixed. Some more info is that i had only been on the computer for less than 2 hours. I have not spilled anything on the computer, the vent is completely uncovered, and the computer is in good working conditions according to the mannual. I need to know asap please. The tower still works perfectly fine it is only the monitor.

Answer:Monitor is black and the power button on the monitor is blinking

If you could try the monitor on another PC, that would confirm the monitor is faulty. In any case if the monitor is bad and considering its age, it would be best to just replace it. It would not be worth fixing.

Hello. So my Dell dimension 4600 just lost mointor/video signal one day. All the fans, drives and CPU were still workin away. I figured ok great my video card is blown(in my case the MB). So I install a new MB. Still no video or monitor signal....I have checked the diagnostic lights on the back and none of them are lite. I have tested the power supply - seems fine. I have unplugged everything other than the CPU, main and second power to MB. I am getting no error beeps. I am so lost here!! I need some help please!! Thanx

Answer:Dell 4600 solid power amber light - no signal to monitor..help!

I would have tried another monitor before buying another board.Try hooking up a different monitor to the computer.  If that doesn't work try another monitor cable. If you have no other monitor, try hooking up your current monitor to another computer.  If it works then it means there's something going on with your computer.  If not, then the problem is most likely that  your monitor is bad.

Hi, I have Envy 700-327C with Windows 7. After I update the BIOS which I downloaded from HP site, my monitor is black and no light on the computer. But every about 50-60 sec, a light is flash, and funs are running at full speed. Also I can not turn off the computer with power switch. I tried to do BIOS recovery using window's key and B key, but it doesn't do anything. I found 2 sets of Jumpers on the motherboard, but I can not find any information on the pins. Any help will be great! Thanks in advance

I write this as a favor to anybody who has this problem. No boot orange wireless light and 1 blink on the caps lock. The fans turn, the dvd makes a sound and all seems well but no boot! On the HP website it said Cpu malfunction.  But maybe not... I looked on the web and found numerous cures.  Most of which seemed too extreme for me.  I am not going to put a laptop in the oven! The general concensus is that the cause is a bad soldering job on the motherboards.  That it is not the CPU but heat from a badly designed motherboard. That seems correct and I was going to dump the unit..  But maybe... I got a can of condensed air and blew into the vents.  no good. Then, after I thought about it some more.  I decided to remove the back and blow through every hole I could find using the narrow flexible tube that came with the air can. Still nothing.  I then removed the hard drive, the dvd writer and the memory and blew through any hole underneath them.  Got the beeps about no memory so I put the memory back, but only the memory. And.. the darn thing booted! I turned it off.  Blew a lot more into the vents until I heard the fan spin.  I reinserted the hard drive.  It worked! I finally put back the dvd writer and put the back on.  And it works fine! I realize that I was lucky but it might help someone else avoid messing with the innards..  Give it a t... ... I forgot to add:  also remove the battery and the adapter as well as the drives and memory. .... I also realized that I was not clear.  Although the motherboard is an issue in my case it was just heat.   It could just be heat with yours.. there are a lots of possible causes ...in this case it was not the wiring.  I would suggest that you try this and other means before stripping down your unit.  I saw it done on the web and it is a pain.  Really looks hard to get back together.  Forget a screw or a connection and back in you have to go!

My laptop has given me some problems:
Problem 1 = doesn't recognise ANY blank dvds so i can't burn
Remedy - bought an external drive

Problem 2 = usb ports stop working even though the troubleshoot says thier all fine, searched numerous boards & followed various procedures but none works
Remedy - only able to buy & use firewire compatible devices

Problem 3 = My damn lighting doesn't work!

When i start up my leds are lit up & the fans running but my screen is pitch black!

If i get really really close to my screen i can just about makeout my screen name, sign-in, (hear the windows xp intro noise) & just about makeout the icons on my desktop.

I have searched the forum but found knowone with this problem or a remedy for it.

Are thier any techies hear that can offer any advice?
It would be much appreciated!

Answer:Satellite P10: black screen - only LEDs light

It?s very sad to hear that?
Problem 3 seems to be an Fl-inverter or display malfunction.
Did you try to connect the external monitor to the notebook?
Check if something will appear on second monitor and use the FN+F5 option for switching between the displays devices.

Problem 2; something like that could happens because the external USB devices were not safely disconnected. In such case you should remove the USB ports from the device manager. After the new notebook rebooting the OS will recognize the ports automatically. Mostly such procedure should helps.

Problem 1; this could be a calibration error. Every time the lens must be calibrate to read or write the medias. If the lens cannot calibrates the drive will be not able to handle the CD or DVD.

Hi all,This is my first post.I tried to find my problem with my laptop but i did not find anything similar. The story:Several months ago the hinges of my laptop started to slacken. After this (warranty period expired) i opened the pc and repaired them with stronger screws. In the same time the lcd screen started to flicker. I had to move or press it to obtain the correct colours or light. So i decided to disassemble it and try to find the fault.Unfortunalely during this operation tpouching the pcb (in the place were written "do not touch!) the screen bacame black. Using a light in the back i can see everything, so it meens that there is no more back light.Using an external monitor the video is perfect. My qýuestion:I am quite sure i have to replace the LCD that was defective (i knew i had to do but i attempted to fix it temporarily) but now i am afraid i broke something in the main PCB.Do you think a simple replacement will resolve? Do i have to control something else than the screen?I apologize for my english, but i hope i have been able to be understood.Thanx all.

This may not be the correct place to post - but it is a starting point. Please, by all means, point me in the right direction!

Problem: Screen goes black. The power light is orange on the monitor. Checking the CPU/Tower - the on/off button is ORANGE. Moving the mouse - Pressing keys - does nothing. To turn the computer OFF, I pressed and held the on/off button. On starting the computer back up - everything seemed to be fine. I then started running virus scans (ie: Norton, MS AntiSpyWare and many others). During ONE of the scans - while I was away, the computer again "turned off". It happened again when running Quickbooks - however, I had just entered data - and turned away - ie - sadly - not watching if anything was happening.

Dell support was interesting. While the computer is out of warranty - I was not expecting the following: The Dell rep HUNG up on me! I guess it was because I questioned removing the coin-battery as a solution. Was ok with "reseating" the hard drive cables - but why the battery?

Sadly, I've been at this computer for 30 minutes now, and it has not turned off. (Sadly?)

If you have any ideas, let me know.
Oh yes: I tried different power cords, plugged into a different UPS plug.

Are you getting a POST screen when you boot the laptop? Or is it just staying completely blank when you boot?

Hello, everyone,

Since I am not sure whether this is a driver, software or hardware problem, I decided to start by posting in this general discussion forum. Please feel free to move it if you feel some other place is more appropriate.

I upgraded to Windows 7 shortly after purchasing a new PC late last year. I am using an ASUS P7P55D motherboard, ASUS NVIDIA GeForce 9600GSO graphics card, and a ViewSonic VA720 LCD monitor.

The issue that has stumped me since I got this new computer is that about 33% of the time when the computer initiates the monitor (when coming out of standby or hibernation or when starting the computer), I will see the desktop for about 1 second and then the screen will go black. If I turn the monitor off and on again, I will see the image for another second and then it may or may not go black again. The interesting thing is that the power light on the LCD is still a solid green (it goes orange if no signal is detected). Therefore, the LCD supposedly is still getting a signal, but it does not display anything. Other than not being able to see anything, the computer and Windows 7 operates normally.

If I turn the monitor off and then on, it will either stay on another second before going black or actually stay on, in which case I go about my day. Sometimes this takes 5-6 tries of turning the monitor on or off. Other times I give up and use these 1-second intervals to turn the computer off with my mouse (or restart blindly with the ... I put all back together just as the guy said in the video and now my screen won't come on. I reopened and checked that video cable was attached properly it and put it back together again and the screen still won't come on. My power light comes on and stays on, nothing else is flickering or doing crazy stuff and still my won't come on. What other troubleshooting technique should I try? Please help.

What is the complete product number or product name of your notebook? Connect an external LCD display to the notebook. If the display shows a normal desktop and you have  carefully double checked the connections of the laptop screen, contact the seller for an RMA.   That test shows the display  is faulty and your notebook's video solution is working as it should.

I have a Lenovo B540 thats a few years old. Yesterday morning i woke up to use it and the screen will not come on. No boot screen, nothing. i tried to see if it was asleep so i moved the mouse and keyboard and still nothing. the only thing that seems to work is the power button which lights up and the light on the far right of the screen. so far i have tried:i tried unplugging it and pressing the power button and letting it power down and plugging everything back in, nothing.tried hooking up an hdmi cable to view on tv and nothing.i tried removing the hard drive and the ram and nothing. Any ideas? Like i said the only thing that light up is the actual power button and the touch button to the right of the monitor. which will also on occasion slowly blink. and i can also hear the hard drive

Answer:B40 GETS POWER BUT SCREEN DOES NOT LIGHT UP

It just did this? Did it crash the day before, or before? Perhaps do you know about a power outage or surge?

My HP Pavilion 15-p158sa is not coming on. The Laptop power light is lit when switched on but no display from screen.80 seconds after pressing power on button, Caps Lock LED blinks white twice, accompanied by two beeps. On looking up fault code on website it appears to match "BIOS corruption failure", have tried holding windows key and "b" and also windows key and "V" along with power button but cannot get bios recovery to start. Also unsuccessfully tried usb bios recovery using the above method. I have had the laptop for two years so would make it 2013/14 model. Can anyone advise if this is a bios related issue or have i read the fault code wrong. Many Thanks
