T420s Optical Drive - No power to dvd drive, but same dvd drive works in other 4T20s

Question: T420s Optical Drive - No power to dvd drive, but same dvd drive works in other 4T20s

Hi guys, i wonder if you can offer any ideas here. I have a brand new T420s which came with an optical slot place holder piece of plastic. I removed this and popped in a 'Lenovo DVD Multi IV DVD Multi Recorder CD-RW' P/N 45N7453. It clicked into place fine, but the power light on it does not come on and the eject button does not work. This same drive works fine in 2 other T420s laptops my colleagues have, so the drive is ok. I tried disabling the optical drive in the bios, rebooting, re-enabling, rebooting but nothing. Is there anything else i can try or would you say its a board issue and i'm stuck with it ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... Hi everyone, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520, and my optical drive won't power on. The problem is that it is by default set on "safe to remove", and when I want to use it, I have to remove it first and then put it back. BUT that won't work unless I reboot the machine after removal. I searched on this forum, but I did not find the solution for so far. I found some topics on the optical drive, which describe that one can toggle an option for activating the optical drive in Power Manager, which I can not find in my version (6.36). Is there any solution for this? I would like the optical drive to be powered on by default, and not in the "safe to remove" mode, so I can use it any time without having to remove the optical drive and rebooting the system. Thanks in advance,Jeroen

Answer:Optical Drive won't power on

The device driver for the optical drive is initially present after booting, but it disappears when the otical drive times out; therefore, any attempt to power the drive on from "Computer" fails because there is no device driver there to respond. I pretty much have to boot the laptop with a CD or DVR loaded in order to use the drive.

I'm running Win 7 x64 on a T400, and recently installed Power Manager 3.12.  Since 3.11, I've enabled the "Automatic Optical Drive Power Off" feature.  In Vista, this worked fine, where once the drive was powered off (and the light on it would go off), I'd eject it and it'd automatically power back on.  Or, in My Computer, I could right-clik on it and power it back on. Now, in Win 7, once it powers off, it disappears from My Computer completely.  On top of that, the light on the drive stays on, and after a while a different thing shows up in My Computer under "Other" and all it says is "(Powered Off)", but it's not the optical drive.  Clicking "Power On" on this phantom device does nothing, and ejecting and closing the optical drive does not get it to show up again either. The only way I've found to re-enable the optical drive is to remove it physically from the laptop and re-insert it.  Then, it'll reappear in My Computer, but the mysterious Powered Off device still remains as well. Is anyone else having a similar issue?  I'm leaning toward the assumption it's one of the many bugs in the Win 7 Power Manager (that along with the Dock Eject Action not functioning properly).  I'm at the point where I'm ready to just completely uninstall the Power Manager, as it only seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Answer:T400: Optical Drive Power Off, Then Disappears

Yes, same issue here on a T500 after clean install of Windows 7-64.  Optical drive shows up in the "computer" window, but says that it's powered off and won't power back on either by command or by ejecting.  Also, the green LED stays on even when the computer is in sleep mode (it used to shut off as soon as power manager turned off the drive).   Have to physically remove and re-insert the drive to get it back working. I see there have been no responses to this, so I'm replying to bump the issue back up.  Thanks for any insights from the technorati.....

Answer:How to stop optical drive power notification?

Hi buddy,

To be honest I have no idea what you mean exactly.
Can you post a screenshot or tell us what program you mean exactly?
Furthermore the exact notebook model number with preinstalled OS would be interesting.

Generally speaking all start up programs you can disable in msconfig. There you can also see the program directory where it?s installed.

Hello, I've got Lenovo T420, Windows 7 x64 EN and Power Manager 6.36 . I have enabled an option to power off optical drives (CD/DVD) when they are not in use. I also use Deamon Tools with one virtual optical drive. The problem is, that when drive is powered off, it also powers off the virtual drive. I would like Power Manager to turn off only the physical optical drive (when not in use) and to leave the virtual ROM always on. Is there such option?

I recall when I first get the unit in its preinstalled state, I have to press the eject button on the optical drive twice, first to switch it on and second to actually eject it. But now I've installed a fresh Windows 7 x64. I downloaded the drivers and the power management software from Lenovo site and installed them. Most things work, but seems that the optical drive is always on, i.e. only one press on the eject button will eject the drive. May I know if the power management is actually managing the power of the optical drive when it isn't in use?

I have looked around and around. I'm completely stumped.

I have a Lite-On external dvd combo burner. On the rear of the drive is the power connection, usb2.0 and l/r audio rca out jacks (red/white). Above where you connect the power cord is also a toggle on/off switch. During a move, this toggle snapped off. In the off position. I got to the card and the toggle switch is soldered to the card. No way to get in there (easily at least).

I haven't been able to find a replacement card and I'm reluctant to jam a paperclip (or whatever) in there wiggling it around and scratching up the card.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Power supply to external optical drive

Why not just short the switch with solder and unplug it to turn it off?

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

I have a sony vaio VGN-NR330E that I have just bought a new hard drive for (doing a fresh install of vista) and the internal optical drive spins up but won't boot off the cd, and after a blinking cursor says O/S not found, so i tried it on an external usb drive, and it didnt boot, same black screen followed by O/S not found. I tried booting from a knoppix live cd that worked on another computer and it wouldnt boot either. I have no idea of any what to do, since it wont boot off of an external HDD internal optical drive, external optical drive, and any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:sony vaio vgn-nr330E won't boot to any external drive, or internal optical drive

What are the current boot options...as set in your BIOS?

If not listed as the first boot option...it's unlikely that the system would boot from either drive.

I have an Alienware Aurora R6 and am frustratingly trying to upgrade the optical drive to one that can read Blu-rays. Does anyone know what drive size specs I should be looking for? It's a low profile drive that is even smaller than a standard laptop optical drive. I tried posting this to an existing Aurora R6 article (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-upgrade-alienware-aurora-r5-and-r6), but my reputation here isn't high enough to post to older articles. Thanks any help.
Background in case anyone's interested: When purchasing this computer the only spec*they showed was that it was a 5.25" drive. Assuming it would be a full sized 5.25", I ordered the system with the least expensive DVD option, meaning to switch it out with the Blu-ray drive in my old system. This, of course, didn't work, so eventually I ordered a low profile Blu-ray drive meant for laptops. The slot in the case is too small even for this drive. What grinds my gears about this is that it's obvious that the internal bay (silver*metal part) is big enough for the laptop drive. It's the outer case (black metal part) and front bezel that are the obstructions.

H Guys,Need help with this one. Got three Dell Latitude C810 Laptops and all three are coming up with the same message. Primary Hard Drive: NoneFixed Optical Drive: Not installed.I am very comfortable around computers / laptops  and thought I knew my way around them until now.The hard drives are all brand new 40GB IDE hard drives that work fine on other laptops (tested them). The laptops have the HD adapters fitted before I installed them in the laptops. Even bought three replacement adapters - just in case. Did not make any difference. When the units power up, they go through POST, spend ages on the splash screen and the error messages come up.The HD and Optical Drive is not registering in BIOS.I read somewhere to take out the battery, unplug laptop from mains and hold power botton for 30 seconds or so. Tried that no luck. Also read somewhere to have the Caps, Num and Scroll keys all on in or before going into BIOS and do the Alt+E, Alt+F and Alt+B. The Alt+B combination was supposed to be held until the laptop reboots itself. Held them down for almost a minute and nothing happened. Laptop did not reboot. The Alt+F did reset the Laptops Bios to default setting and dates, and nothing more. They still did not register the HD or Optical Drive.I have swapped out HDs, DVD ROMs, with or without battery, Swapped out RAMs - ram memtest on another laptop. They all came back okay. This is really thrown me and I'd realy appreciate some assitance.Cheers guys.KS

Hi,
I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?

Answer:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

hi

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

I have two identical hard drives connected as master and slave on primary ide channel, and two optical drives on secondary ide. The problem is that the slave hard drive will only run in pio mode, and not udma mode 5 (as the primary does). The upshot of this is that any file transfer to or from my slave drive results in 100% cpu usage, and it's very annoying. As I have an uptodate motherboard do you think that putting a hdd on each ide channel with optical as slave would speed things up?

Fresh install of Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron M5030 from my KLite USB drive where I have only added the correct, workable AMD-4200 video driver to the normal Windows 10 ISO. Windows 10 is functioning properly EXCEPT my TSST DVD+/-RW TS-L633C shows in Device Manager as DISK DRIVE 01 (which of course is not initialized) instead of showing as TS-L633C in DVD/CD-ROM drives.

I have tried the following:

1: Online updating drivers.

2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter. My problem is not recognized.

3: Uninstall CD/DVD drive driver. Restarted the computer, checked the functionality and the same problem exists.

Per device Manager, I have the standard SATA ACHI controller installed but no ATA channels 1, 2, 3, or 4 and no Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA driver. Since Dell has not "approved" the M5030 for Windows 10, there are no drivers on the Dell M5030 Support website for Windows 10.

Can someone please give me some help please so that I can solve my problem?

Thank you very much.

I recently replaced my hard drive with a SSD and put a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my laptop. I've had a lot of trouble getting all the drivers to work but fixing the optical drive seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've looked around on this website and on several forums. I've gone into the device manager where the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE entry only appears when I select to see hidden devices, and even then it is not the optical drive that is installed but something to do with my android phone so scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I have seen tips on going into the registry to delete two files named upperfilters and lowerfilters, neither of which exist in my registry.  The drive can be seen from my BIOS but appears nowhere else. When I insert a disc I can hear and feel it moving so the hardware is still functioning.  When I installed the new hard drive, I did not unplug anything else so I am certain that the drive is just as connected as it was before when it was working properly. Any other suggestions?

Hi all

I have installed an optical drive in my computer today and my drive letters were changed. I have changed them back to what they were and after restarting my computer I was unable to log to Windows 8.1 due to the OS being unable to find user profile (my user profile is moved outside of the system drive).

I restored my system to the point from before the new drive installation, but I still would like to change the drive letters around, as some of my software relies on specific directory paths with drive letters.

1. The state from before the installation of the new optical drive.

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
2. The state after installation of the new optical drive:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Optical Drive (F:)
Passport (G:)
Storage (H:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
3. What I'd like to have:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
Optical Drive (any letter, preferably X:)

My user profile WAS located in G:\Users

It is now located in H:\Users and I can log in to Windows. After changing the drive letters around to 3. above I can no longer log in, as Windows is unable to find the user profile on H:\Users anymore.

I use EaseUS Partition Master 10.0 to change the drive letters.

Is there any way I can change the drive letters and make Windows aware of user profile path change?

Thanks.

Hi all, I've recently bought a second hand Lenovo Z580 and the optical drive needs replacing. I've looked up the hardware maintenance guide and it lists the following: ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PLDS DS-8A8SH
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PSN UJ8C1
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, Optiarc AD-7740H
ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, TSST SN-208ABI'm not interested in Blu-ray combo replacement so I haven't listed those. My question is, do I have to get one of the drives listed above or can I get another brand as brand new is cheaper (see below)? https://www.businessdirect.bt.com/products/liteon-8x-internal-slim-dvd-rw-black-oem-ds-8acsh-BY5D.ht... I understand I would need to swap the bezel around :-) Thanks

Thanks for any help in advance, Pete

Answer:Z580 Optical drive (DVD drive) replacement advice?

Hi pete_agreatguy  ,

Greetings.

As Optical Drives are mostly universal , your choice most likely would work as SATA interface. 12.7mm height .
Challenges would only be the fitting with the mounts so do check for return option just in case.

For other resellers, it would be better if there a mention of workable model for match for chassis fittings  .
12.8 cm x 12.6 cm x 1.27 cm (LiteOn 8x Internal Slim) 128 mm x 12.7 mm x 126.1 mm (Sony)BD-5750H as one from the manual .

Hope this helps.

Regards

Is it possible to replace the optical drive with a 2nd hard drive?  I've installed a 128GB SSD as my primary drive on my Y560.  I'm interested in disassembling the laptop and replacing the Optical Drive with a secondary hard drive for storage.  It doesn't appear that the DVD Drive is designed to be removed, but is it possible with some effort to replace?

I wanted to post a PSA here based on my experience troubleshooting this issue on my W530 which I just upgraded to Windows 10 x64 (1607 creators update clean install). After installing all of the Lenovo drivers and software (including Vantage), I began to see my optical drive power off after 1 minute of inactivity (assuming there was no disc in the drive). I didn't like this behavior becuase1) I couldn't control it2) I had issues in the past with some softwares and this power down of the optical drive.3) This issue might not be (unconfirmed) limited to optical drives, but possibly any drive that is the ultrabay (on applicable models). This is a new solution I propose - not something I've seen talked about before.  A short history lesson on these optical drive power offs as they were implented pre Windows 10.  I believe those of you running Windows 10 (and possibly 8) might have run into what I did.  I have seen quite a few posts going back a couple years now with no solutions. - In Windows 7, Lenovo provided the Power Management Software which supported the ?Automatic optical drive power off? option.  In order for this option to be visible you needed to have the Lenovo Power Management Driver (Lenovo PM Device) and you needed to ensure your IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers were using the proper SATA AHCI driver (generally *not* the build in standard Microsoft driver, but the appropriate one from Lenovo for your chipset).  If these... Answer:Optical drive cannot power off since the latest "Intel Rapid Storage" driver

Hi Mobal,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are not able to power off optical drive after updating the Intel Rapid Storage driver.

Try rolling back the driver from device manager. Go to control panel -> Device manager. Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, go to properties of SATA driver. Roll back the driver. Else, you can manually install the previous version to resolve the issue.

Hope this helps!

Hi Guys  So I decided to replace my internal Optical Drive with the orginal Hard Drive that came with the laptop, I used a caddy which I bought from eBay and all went well and works well. I have noticed one issue though, with the original Optical Drive there is a little screw which goes through the end of the optical drive and into the main section of the laptop under the keyboard (I hope people know what I mean). Anyway with the replacement caddy it does not have this hole for the screw so I am unable to secure the caddy in place.  What this all means is that I can literally pull the caddy out of laptop while using it as it's not secured, has anyone else performed this replacement and had this issue and know what can be done to secure it (other than blue tack or something). Thanks in advance

Hey all! Just posting to see if anyone has experience with upgrading their Lenovo laptops/notebooks with 2nd hard drives through the use of hard drive caddys? I have been looking through this website which includes many 'how-to's and video guides on the process. There are also plenty on youtube. However I am reluctant to go out on a limb.http://www.newmodeus.com They have entire production lines dedicated to certain brands of laptops and notebooks and this includes Lenovo. However, I couldn't find one for my specific model, G570, but I am able to find them for the G430/G530G560. I'm on the verge of buying a T430, and I was wondering whether having an SSD as my primary hard drive (on which I would have the operating system only) and then using a 500GB hard drive in place of the optical drive. My reasoning is I want a fast boot time, and also the storage on the SSDs aren't that big, and I do need a lot of space. Are there any performance issues (eg slower) when using the added hard drive?  I was thinking of installing all my programs on there.  I read on a YouTube comment that having the second hard drive creates 'bottlenecking' and slows things down.

Answer:T430 and hard drive instead of optical drive

Be sure the SSD height profile is compatible with the 430. I believe they're using a thinner drive not the 9.5mm is standard. Verify before you order a drive if thats the system you're wanting.Momentus drives are 9.5mm from the data sheet of their website. As for slowing down I say not. You can put the swap file etc on the 2nd drive and that would reduce write access to the SSD for temp data. You will need the storage and or target for a backup image so IMO its a must.

I just built a nice little powerhouse for my girlfriend. It's all up and running great, but I ran into a strange snag along the way.

First of all I'm using the new 915 Intel board (not sure the exact number ATM, but it is Intel brand) with a PCI Express, LGA775 chipset.

I currently have one 36.7 GB WD Raptor on a SATA connection. The only optical drive is a CD/DVD +/- RW combo on it's own (and only) IDE channel. I opened up the BIOS on first boot, and noticed that even though the correct model number showed up in the Drive Options, it was displayed as being a Floppy Drive!

Confused, I switched the jumper setting.... still no change. Switched to the last jumper setting.. tried removing the jumper completely, nope ! OK, so I decide I'll set the jumper back to the Master position and let Windows try to sort it out.

I install windows off my USB DVD-drive. Flawless install, but even in Windows it displays a Floppy Drive! There is no Floppy drive connected. I then proceed to close the case and barf all over the damn thing out of pure frustration. puke:

I'm freakin out here! I've built several computers and worked on countless others and have NEVER EVER seen anything like this. Granted, the RAID thing is new to me, and I'm guessing it probably has something to do with that.

Answer:Optical Drive being recognized as a Floppy Drive !

Welcome to Techspot !

I know you are experienced ,but sometimes the simple stuff.
Given the newness of this architecture I would lean towards the necessity of a bios file update.
Since the bios sees it as a floppy but has the correct Model and I take you loaded Windows from it, it obviously works.
Does your Bios settings allow you to manually chose the drive type and DMA etc.If yes
Disable all IDE channels not in use. and turn off 'auto configure '
Check the web site and tech support there could be a bug fix in the works.
Let us know how far you get.

P.S. Sorry missed you loaded from USB,However if the drive can read media etc. my point is the same.

Hello there,

First off thanks in advance for reading this! I would really appreciate some advice

I have a 17inch Macbook pro i7 laptop.

I was looking at the possibility of replacing the optical drive with a SSD drive (i never really use the optical drive anyways)

I found a place online where one can purchase the SSD drive and case so it fits into where the optical drive is also.

My question is has anybody else done this? and if so is it a good /bad idea?

And also once I replace the optical drive with SSD can I have it so my OS is working off of the new SSD drive and my original 5400rpm HDD will appear up as a separate drive for storage.
Im not sure if its relevant or not but here are the specs of my laptop

Mac osx 10.6.8
2.66 GHZ i7
8gb 1067 MHz DDR3

Thanks!

So I'm currently trying to install a game, for some reason at the exact same point every time i am getting an error that says: Cyclic Redundancy Check Error. Ive been all over the internet looking for solutions to this problem but none of them are working for my situation. Most people say it is either a problem with the disk or the hard drive itself, but i have gone back to the store where i bought the game and got a new disk so the disk cannot be the problem as it stops at the same place regardless. Also my hard drive cannot be the problem because i have tried installing it to both my computers hard-drive as well as an external drive which leaves me no option but to believe it is a problem with the optical drive. Since i have a laptop i cant dismantle anything to clean / make sure the drive is connected properly. I dont know if there is a solution to this problem short of having to send my computer to a proffessional / back to the manufacturer but if anything i have done is wrong then i would love a suggestion of what i could possibly do to fix this problem. I am also not against revisiting my hard drive being at issue if anyone still thinks it is the problem.

Please Assist,
Cheers,
Jias

Dell Dimension, win XP.
PC has original DVD drive, added DVD burner and added floppy.

Power at least is connected to DVD (light comes on). Burner and Floppy don't have lights. Compputer does not show the drives as available.

I was selling the PC, so I deleted some apps(MS Office, Photoshop), games, etc., then ran a HDD cleaner to wipe empty space.

Tried re-seating cables, looked at BIOS, but I really don't know what I'm looking for.

My C: drive was unchanged. it gives me 2 Xp lines above safe mode to choose from when I log in. It defauls to D: (recovery). Whats going on? How can I reinstall on my c: drive? Help! I do not want to mess up my recovery drive. Thanks

Answer:XP reinstall, C: drive untouched, not works from d: drive (recovery!) Help pls

There is a file called boot.ini which gives option for dual boot etc, so your system thinks it has 2 copies of XP on it. Run the system recovery software again and be sure it picks C: as the destination for the install. When done if it still wants to go to D: edit boot.ini to make C: the first option or remove the D: option if you dont want ability to boot off of D: if your system ever gets messed up as a next available preloaded os.

Machine was working normally, no recent additions or changes. Windows 10 installed about 1 year ago. Turned on the computer & had a blank screen, not black, no display at all. Power light & hard drive led lit and the fan worked. Wireless keyboard did not display lights for caps lock or num lock. Read that motherboard was most likely issue so I replaced it with a new one of the exact part #. Now the keyboard lights work & the display comes to life but it just flashes red, green, blue, white, black for a time then goes blank. I also then replaced the video card with the same results. I went through the troubleshooting docs from HP trying to reset BIOS but no luck. Any help???

Need full specs of hardware including the make and model number of everything including: motherboard, hard drive, CD drive, power supply, all attached equipment, etc. etc. etc.... you can never give too much information. Something small and seemingly unimportant could be the source of a problem, so knock yourself out and just give every bit of info you can.Sounds like a short, but before jumping to conclusions and making any suggestions to fix it, best to know what you're working with here.

In order for our company to stay in complaince, we need to store 3rd party datat on an encrypted drive.  Due to the software that we utilize in our business, using software encryption method would render the experience uselss so is only an option of last resort.  Currently we are deploying with the internal 120gb ssd and adding a 500gb fips capable drive in the cd/dvd bay drive that we added.  The issue is that the encrypt/decrypt function is done at the first level during startup and when in the cd/dvd bay it never gets to start up.  Has anyone encountered this before and if so what work arounds did you come up with?  Thank yo uin advance for your help

Answer:Using a FIPS drive in cd/dvd bay t420s

I believe that should be addressed as a setting in BIOS enabling Utlrabay HD power and always on at startup.I have read a number of issues in using a HD in the Ultrabay and not sure that its use is implemented for full time operation for Prime Time users. You certainly cannot have a boot drive in there and have it respond occasionally or more importantly an SSD.I believe this is an issue that Lenovo should be contacted with directly. The people in NC, USA and look at this support of hardware.

Hi all,Just received a T420s, udpating from a T410s. The T410s has the switchable graphics. When connected with a display port cable using a series 3 docking station, the old T410s will drive my Dell 3008 at its native 2560x1600 resolution without any trouble. The new T420s will *not*, no matter what I do. Same cable, same monitor, same docking station, etc. The highest it will go is 2016 x 1000-something (writing from home and going by memory, sorry I don't know the exact numbers). Any ideas? This is a real bummer as I really need the extra real estate. Every tech spec says it will do the right resolution, but it simply won't.. I don't even get the option in the NVIDIA control panel. two weeks ago i was bought a Fujitsu B series lifebook computer.About 5 days ago I had got that virus stating I had a "processor running at 83 degrees", "hard drive clusters are partly damaged", "must scan to fix this issue", yatta yatta yatta and some other classic virus jive talk i cant remember at this moment. At first it kept bothering me about the scan, then it started popping up 57 windows in short succesion, then i couldnt access my other files, then my desk top went black and was reduced to 4 icons, start menu was obliterated.try combo fix, trend micro, some other reliable programs but i would either down load them and they'd disappear or in the case of combofix it would load then exit out quickly. It reached a point were i just couldn't boot my computer up anymore.NTLDR was missing it said. I am not sure if that virus deleted it or if the computer and its hd were just old and wore out. It was from the flea market.. I cant get past that error msg, there is no flash drive boot up option on this old thing, i have no floppy drive with it, it has no cd rom drive, ive heard the external usb cd rom drive cant be used to boot it up but im not 100 percent sure.Someone else with the same notebook reported that it would not allow usb cd rom drive boot up. I have been told network boot is an option but i was told thats just to access it after its turned on and its not what i think its for. I was told an hd switch was a good option but i dont... My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

Hi, hopefully should be straight forward enough...

I have just bought one of these space saving Acer Revos which does not come with an Optical drive.

I have a Blu-ray reader (dvd writer) which is SATA, but the Revo only has USB or eSATA.
So... i was wondering what is needed to get this (SATA) drive to work via eSATA or usb?

Is it as simple as a SATA to eSATA cable or will this not give the necessary power to the drive?

Or do i need an eSATA enclosure, and if so what size for an optical drive 5.2?

Cheers for any help.

Hi, I am trying to wipe the hard drives of two laptops (T420 and T420s) so I can set them up for new users.  I have tried downloading dBAN and hdderase, but these suggest booting the computer in DOS mode to begin the erase, and I can't even get that far! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:T420 and T420s Wipe Hard Drive for New User

Hello and welcome,

I've never used dBAN.  I usually use (non free) Acronis on a bootable flash drive.

This might help you do something similar with dBAN:  http://www.pendrivelinux.com/install-dban-to-a-usb-flash-drive-using-windows/

[edit] Is the dBAN CD your burned not booting?  What have you tried so far?

I'm working on my sister computer and put in a new hard drive. I imaged the drive in windows (using xp) and all seemed to go ok. I took the original out and now windows will book ok, but will hang on a screen that resembles the windows login screen, blue background with a windows xp logo on the right side. The mouse still works as well as the numlock lights, but it will go no futher. I've tried changing drive letters with the old drive installed, but somehow, i've fubar'd both and now both drives hang at this spot regardless of whether or not the other is plugged in as well. I have a feeling, from research i've done on the web, that windows is looking for system files on a drive letter that doesn't exist. The problem now is that i cannot boot into either install of windows, nor thier respective safe mode options. In safe mode, i get the same screen as i do when booting into normal mode. How do i get either one of these drives to boot? I know the data is still there and the data is fine, but I need to make windows boot. I've also tried using the recovery console to do a fixmbr and a fixboot, but neither helped (I didn't figure they would as the address different aspects of the boot than what i suspect to be the problem). Any ideas?

So my newly ordered T420s shipped today and I have a couple of questions -

1) Has anbody tried to replace the standard hard drive with the new Intel 510 Sata III SSD?

2) What about a case? I ordered the top load case as I was short of time and I needed to get something. Now I am thinking about a better case....what has everybody else used?

Answer:New T420s replacing standard hard drive with the new Intel 510 Sata III SSD

The choice of cases depend on whether you want something that looks good, whether a name brand is important or not, and how much protection you want (which will affect the weight of the case, and defeat the purpose of getting a T420s in the first place if you choose something like crushproof pelican case).Personally i use a Oakley vertical laptop messenger bag for the purpose, it has the right combination of look, foam protection and extra spaces (for documents) and it is from a reputable company. Sometimes i also use the Victorinox Swiss Army Eiffel laptop case, because it has superior ballistic nylon material that is both light and tough (so far there is not many laptop bags that can beat it).
So there are quite few choices available depending on your need, taste and budget.

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 running XP Service Pack 3. My original Western Digital Drive was dying. This drive was the boot drive and listed first in "setup" (after hitting F2) There was also a 300GB Maxtor SATA drive already installed which I used for data storage -- not bootable. It was listed 2nd in "setup".

Ultimately the WD Drive wouldn't boot. I cleared the 300GB Maxtor and did a clean install Win XP from manuf. disks WITHOUT removing the WD - Drive 1 first. (I had hoped to remove some data I hadn't yet back up

I tried rebooting BUT if both disks were set to "On" in "setup - F2" the system would NOT boot. If Disk 1 (WD Drive) was turned off the system would boot fine. I removed the "boot partition" on Disk 1 but if both drives were turn on - no go.

I have now replaced the defective drive (WD) with a Maxtor SATA II/300 (1 TB).

The boot drive (300GB Maxtor) is the "last" drive on the SATA interface cable and the new drive (1 TB) is on the second to last connector.
Still, if the blank, new drive is turned on in "setup - F2" the system won't boot. If off, system boots. (I want to use the 1 TB drive solely for data storage).

It seems the SATA controller refuses to recognize the bootable drive if both drives are active. All I can think of is this is due to the 300GB being "Drive 2" in my original system and still listed that way in "setup". There is NO ability to c... Read more

HiI ordered a Lenovo y50-70 (4k) laptop from this page this Sunday (Norwegian page). I have also ordered microsoft office programs separately, as I couldn't order them here. However, after watching a couple of unboxing videos on youtube, I'm beginning to suspect that the y50 doesn't have an optical disc drive. So my question basically is: Does any of the y50s' come with an optical drive? If not, I find this quite annoying as it clearly says under functions that the laptop includes an integrated optical drive.. Besides, there is no other information on the page saying that the pc does not have a drive. So what am I supposed to believe? Anyways, if this is the case then I have to order an external drive in order to be able to actually install the office programs. Which kind of blows considering I probably have to borrow someone elses computer during my exam this year. Despite of being a little grumpy, I am still really looking forward to be getting the y50 though! It seems to perform very well, and looks to be a neat laptop overall as well!

Answer:Optical drive for y50-70?

Where did you see that the Y50 has an optical drive? It doesn't have one.You could just grab an ISO of your software and install with the keys you bought.

Answer:Which Optical Drive?

Virtually any USB optical drive -from any reputable brand- should be compatible, in addition to the ones from Dell.
Speed and features (disk formats it reads/writes) are what matter, as long as the drive supports whatever version of Windows you're using. If you have USB3 ports on the PC, look for a USB3 drive for faster data transfers.

Question: T43 Optical drive

I have a T43 laptop where the cd/dvd drive has stopped working.  It still shows up under 'my computer,' and there is power to the device, but I can't read or write from anything in this drive.  I have removed and reinserted the unit, disabled/enabled in the device manager, and uninstall/reinstalled it, to no avail. Unfortunately, the laptop is out of warranty.  Any ideas on getting this working, or is it likely to need a new drive?

Answer:T43 Optical drive

Try cleaning the lens with a q-tip immersed in isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn't help, chances are that you need a new drive. Good luck.

Hello everyone, I recently purcahsed a G40-70 last week that did not come with an optical drive.  Lenovo has recently changed the specs on the same model laptop to where it contains an DVD drive now. I would like to know if not having a optical drive will affect the performance and weight of the laptop? I am contemplating about returning it back to get the optic drive installed if there is no difference in portability and performance.

Answer:G40-70 with no optical drive

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

The optical drive will add very, very, little weight to the laptop so that is not an issue.  As for performance, until needed the optical drive will just sit there not using any Windows Resources.

Optical drives overall can be very useful.  They are great for listening to CD music, watching a recorded DVD or making backup copies of data.  In an emergency they can be used to boot up the computer with various rescue discs to recover files.
