2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

Question: 2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

I got this error out of the blue the other day on startup, and now I get it every time I restart. I have tried a number of solutions that I found in these forums (which I'll outline below) but it seems like my system just can't find the drive anymore. Here's what I've done: 1. ran the ExpressCache program via Command Prompt (eccmd.exe -info) and got this error: "**ERROR** ECCmd Request device is not available"2. unistalled the ExpressCache software, shut down, pulled the battery opened up the memory module slot cover, removed the mSATA drive and then re mounted it.3. reinstalled ExpressCache4. I'm trying to reformat the drive, but I am receiving similar errors a. When I try to format the drive (eccmd.exe -format) I get the following error: HFS Volume is not mounted **ERROR** ECCmd Requested device is not available b. When I try to create a partition (eccmd.exe -partition) I get the following error: 0x10df (4319). I looked this up and maybe there are system files missing? I have also tried this but it then says "There is NO mSATA detected, please check mSATA attached" http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT073737 If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Preferred Solution: 2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: 2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

Hello and welcome,

None of the symptoms you describe sound to me like software issues. There is something wrong with the mSATA SSD, or the controller that accesses it - or it needs to be re-inserted in its socket.

Is this machine under warranty? I'd suggest calling support and running this by them. They may suggest re-seating the device in its socket, or may offer replacement or some other option. I don't speak for Lenovo, just offering my personal suggestion.

I started getting this error everytime I reboot my machine. If I press ESC boot continues fine. Whats strange is I dont eve have a HDD2 Mini Sata, and if I do I have never known about it and I cant set it in device manager, etc. How do I get the machine from stopping to try and detect this? Very annoying.

I ordered the mSata mini 128GB card to go into the half size slot under thge keyboard.  However when I boot I get:  "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)".  I thought that a half size drive would work, as it does it my Lenovo W520.  However it appears the BIOS does not recognize it.  It does however recognize it in my W520. Has anyone else successfully added a second drive internally to the X1 Carbon Touch? http://www.mfactors.com/msata-mini-half-size-sataiii-ssd-128gb-64gb/

Answer:X1 Carbon - "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)"

Hello and welcome,

No personal experience here, but I do see this note on the page you linked:

Note: Only works with systems with mSATA standard connector. NOT compatible with Mini PCIe slot for WWAN/wireless cards

The way I read the Hardware Maintenance Manual  that slot is WWAN only, not a WWAN/mSATA combo slot.  Could be wrong.

Hi.  I have a T430s (original owner). At boot-up, I receive a "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini sata)", BUT I don't use a Mini SATA!! Windows 10; All drivers current via Lenovo system update (incl. bios 2.69).I have a Crucial SSD drive; I have verified Crucial SSD has latest firmware.I do not have (and have not had) a Mini SATA card installed - this is why the error is so weird to me.I DID recently change the Wifi Switch and cable (which is when the error started showing)The wires that would feed the Mini SSD are still covered with tape from the factory (I forget the colors)I have removed the battery, internal battery and power (and rebooted).  I have reseated the SSD and the DVD drive (and rebooted).I do not have Express software installed; the software that would control the Mini SATA drive (I can't see any "express" software in Add / Remove programs) Can you help me with this annoying mystery?

Hi, I just received my T430 about 4 days ago and it's working perfectly until I was trying to install important windows updates. As I was rebooting my laptop after the installation (which fails everytime I don't know why), my computer gave me a loud beep and a error code of 2101 detection error. So I searched this forum and found this solution http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 from another post that had the same problem as mine.As i was following the steps,( i did cmd, uninstalled express cache, and did disk managment) but as i went on my disk management i could not find my mSATA. I have a 16 gb mSATA and it was working perfectly fine before. I've noticed on my reboot that it took longer to load and the error message would then come up.So my problem is that I cannot view my mSATA disk on my disk managementThankyou!

Answer:2101 Detection Error: Cannot view my mSATA

The Error 2101: Detection error on HDDx miniSata is a BIOS error. This has nothing to do with the operating system you have installed or any drivers. During the POST, the system does not see the miniSata drive. I (like some others) received my new T530 recently, setup it all up and then a few hours later received this error. The solution is simple. You must open up your ThinkPad. Remove the two keyboard screws and remove the keyboard and RE-SEAT the miniSata drive. There is 1 screw holding the board down. Remove it, re-insert it in. Screw everything back up and voila, no more issue. Go to the Lenovo / ThinkPad Guides and Manuals page for your device (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?) and download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your ThinkPad. There are clear instructions (for those less inclined) on how to remove the keyboard. You do NOT need to disconnect the ribbon cable. Simple / carefully slide the keyboard forward and the miniSata drive will be visible and accessible. You can also use the ExpressCache program to get stats on the miniSata drive and see how it is working. Open a Command Prompt (in Administrator Mode) and issue the command: eccmd -info   -   Display ExpressCache activity informatio eccmd -?   -  Will show you all options eccmd -format   - Will reformat and clear the cache drive. Hopefully, this will help out those out there with this issue. That error is coming from BIOS, it means there is something wrong detecting the mSATA SSD.  It could point to a hardware problem.  It is definitely not a software problem.  I would call the support line in your country, and ask what they recommend about it.

Hi there, After about month of use I suddenly got an error: "2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata)". Simply while browsing the internet system hung up and after reboot the error appeared.I've read that people here had same error just after mounting their SSD's - mine worked fine for few weeks. The problem appeared short time after auto-updating BIOS but not just after flash. 2 or 3 restarts gone smoothly.Strange is that now my BIOS version is still 1.16 when on the web since last Wednesday hangs ver. 1.17 - the update went on Saturday.Any ideas how to avoid sending anything (Laptop and SSD) to RMA? I have already RMA ticket from OCZ but want to save some time and don't want to lose the data.Besides I'm not sure if it isn't issue of the new BIOS from Lenovo. Thanks in advance for any help.Gootchio

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

Answer:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

I've read a lot about the 2101 Detection Error of mSATA issue on x220 with mSATA other than intel 310 installed. Last year I purchased a W520 and an Intel 310 mSATA. They worked fine together untill yesterday. I have windows 7 enterprice 64bit installed on the mSATA and linux installed on an SSD. I have a 500GB HDD installed in the ultrabay, as a shared data volume shared by Windows and Linux. Everytime I try to boot windows, it fails. And during the next reboot, the "2101 Detection Error" shows up. To try to solve this problem I have the mSATA reseated and the 2101 error disappears, until I try to boot windows again. Everything works fine IF I ONLY BOOT LINUX. 2101 Detection Error shows up everytime I TRY TO BOOT WINDOWS UP. I've updated the UEFI BIOS to the latest version which is 1.36 but the problem is still there. I've used the lenovo diagnosis tool (bootable usb) to run a set of quick tests and no error detected (except for drive self test either not supported or not passed). Please find the configuration of my laptop below:======================================W520-4270CTOCPU:                                 I7 2720 QMMEMORY:                        16GB (4GB SAMSUNG X 4)VIDEO:                   ... I tried to do some research on your error, but Microsoft has little listed for a code 2101 error. Could you possibly reboot your machine at some point and copy down the error message in its entirety? With more information, we might be able to figure out a fix.

Best,

I've had my T430 for about a year, and other than two Corsair RAM sticks failing my computer has been running smoothly. Last night, my computer suddenly froze up and now it won't recognize my SSD. I'm currently using my stock HDD, but now I can't access any of the data on my SSD. I've tried running the SSD firmware update from the Lenovo site, but it wouldn't show my SSD under the memory devices (I'm not sure if this particular SSD is supported by the firmware update either). I don't think lenovo customer support would help in this situation, since my stock HDD runs fine and I didn't buy the SSD from them, so any help would be appreciated.

Recently I was in the middle of using my laptop when it bluescreened and crashed. Now I'm not proud of this, but for some reason this is not an uncommon sight; I bought this off of eBay a couple months ago and it worked fine for a few days before randomly bluescreening often. Now I tried to change and install all the eight drivers, and while that solved most issues for awhile. But then I received a detection error 2100 main hdd0 on startup. Now I actually fixed it that time, and none of my files seemed to be damaged, which is strange given the nature of the error but I didn't question it. Now however the error is back seemingly inspired and I can't seen to get my laptop to simply boot. I ran the memory test and it passed and I don't even have an ssd so I don't know what the issue is or why it was fixed last time (I changed the SATA to compatability and then back to ahci and reset it). I think it might have to do with a faulty or corroded contact but I have not opened it to check. If it's anything like last time, I'm willing to bet that there is actually nothing wrong with my drive but something is again causing it not to be detected. I do have photos if that will help, but they need to be compressed so for now I hope this will be enough.

My laptop is T430 of Lenovo. I have two drives installed on my computer, one is SSD (128 G, PLEXTOR), another is HDD (500 G, Samsung). Now I have encountered a serious issue that I could not find the HDD in my Windows 10. Almost two weeks ago, I found my laptop crash frequently. I think there is an extreme incompatibility between the Windows 10 and SSD. I even reinstalled my OS for several times. But it still crashed. Even I opened a simple word file, it does not respond. Two days ago, the issue got even more serious. When I boot my system, I found a problem with "2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". It suggests me to press the "ESC" button to enter into the OS. However, I could not find my HDD on my computer anymore. I have some paramount important data and files in this drive.  Could some friends provide some meaningful suggestions of recovering data and files for me, please?  I'm very anxious. Thank you very much!

You have a brand new system. You should call tech support and have them resolve it.A support tech can remote into your system and fix it. Also they can check for other issues which may be the cause. This save a lot of time.

Question: x260 Error 2101

I have a X260 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD installed connected to the normal SATA cable. Recently, the system ran down in hibernate or sleep mode until the battery was completely drained. The next time I started it up, Iwas presented with an immediate error after the logo of "2101 Detection error on SSD(M.2)". Booting into BIOSor UEFI diagnostics doesn't show any options for diagnosing the SSD. What is odd is there is no M.2 SSD. ?Right nowI am traveling and don't have a SATA-USB cable or another drive to try, but is there any possibility this is something other than my SSD failing completely? System does not boot. Things I have tried already: Reseating the SATA cable, Resetting BIO S to default settings, "Power Cycling" the SSD. All checks in UEFI diagnostics pass.

Hi all. I have a 1 month old t450s bought directly from lenovo. Standard HDD and ram, decided to go with the HD+ IPS monitor (very good) and opted out on the 16gb ssd. I've bought a crucial balistic 8gb stick and a Transcend MTS400 128gb ssd m.2. I've installed everything and it was all working well with the eventual 2101 error on boot after resuming from sleep. Since my OS is installed on the SSD I've disabled the sleep mode, because boot time is less than 5 seconds. Anyway, a week ago I've started experiencing random freezes doing regular tasks (browsing, documents...). Yesterday the computer was frozen, I've power cycled it and I was greeted with a 0xc0000225 blue screen (something on the lines of file system not found).I've tried everything, system repair, changing the UEFI settings, reseating the ssd, running the Lenovo bios diagnostics (all green). Nothing works. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I just updated BIOS ver. from 1.30 to 1.37. Had no problem with it. The system restarted and got the message that " 2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini SATA)" This is a Crucial M4 256Gb SSD, which I'm using since 5 month. Changed it back to my old KINGSTON 64GB SSD , and it works. I've downloaded BIOS ver 1.3 , downgraded the system, but the problem still exists. It boots without any problem with the Kingston , but not with the Crucial. Currently I don't have another computer to test the Crucial SSD if it's broken, but I think it's rather BIOS related. Plese advise what to do now, because I had all my work on that SSD.  Regards,Gabor

Answer:T420SI 2101 ERROR after BIOS update

Contact Crucial. If another drive works then it may be dying and the error is a result of the status.

Hi guys im loving my W350 but on start up I get an error message saying 2101 error miniSata drive not detected. It has also done this once whle in use which is more worrying. I have taken the keyboard off, removed the 16gb mSata and replaced it, but it still is not being detected. If anyone has any thoughts Id be really grateful. Cheers, Al.

I try to use my T430 minidisplayport to connect with external display. But it is so unstable that the connection between laptop and display can lost anytime. That is so annoying. I use Nvidia control panel in Windows to force use NVS5400M instead of HD4000, but it seems doesn't change anything. I heard if I select the discrete graphic card in BIOS, then it may fix the display connection lost problem. Then I go to the BIOS and  set the "discrete", and disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS Config Display (This is necessary otherwise the laptop will change it back to Optimus automatically.). But after I log into Windows, then no graphic card can be found, Why? How should I fix this problem? The external display issue in T430 is so annoying. The VGA suffers very serious noise while the minidisplay is so unstable. Even worse, there is no any lenovo staff stand out to help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If anyone has experience, please share that. Thank so much.

Answer:T430, disable "OS Detection for NVIDIA OPtimus" in BIOS, no graphic card can be found in Windows

buddha1987,

Sorry to hear this has been a bit of a hassle for you.

Can we go over the basics?  Apologies if you have already been over all this and have elected to simply start a new thread, but we should cover this to help others who may have suggestions...

1) What version of Windows are you running?

2) Have you updated to the latest BIOS and video drivers?   I would recommend running system update if you haven't already, to get these.

3) What display model are you connecting to via DP?  Have you tried a different DP cable, or to connect to other displays?

Edit - it seems you are already getting help in this thread -> http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W530-Mini-DisplayPort-to-HDMI-TV-Issue/td-p/1...

Please try to keep the conversation in one place rather than starting multiple related topics.  Thanks!

Best regards,

I have a T430 and I bought a mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor, then I connect this adaptar with HDMI cable to a external display. (T430-> adaptor -> HDMI cable -> external display)

In most cases, the video displayed in the external display well. But sometimes, the video in external display disappears suddenly, then external display shows "no signal". It seems the connection is lost and I can't found the external display in my T430.

Even worse is in this case, it is not that easy to get the connection back. The only rule I conclude until now is, it looks like I need to make the laptop sleep then wake it up, Then after a while, it seems the external display can be found again and the video will be able to display.

Does there anyone confront similar problem as I described? Any suggestion to fix?

Connecting the external display with T430 is very annoying!!!!!!!
There is ground noise problem in VGA port,  I have to use Mini DisplayPort, but the Mini DisplayPort is unstable.

I have a T430 (2349-E51) and a mini dock plus with an external display, and for some reason the display on the ThinkPad is now staying on instead of turning off when I put it in the dock.  In the past it always went dark and I've played with every power and display setting to try and change it, but no luck.  Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

Answer:T430 and mini dock issue

Hi Rcspencer1,

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Display on your ThinkPad T430.

Have you checked with uninstalling the current display driver? If not uninstall it and then update with ThinkVantage system update utility application.

Hope this helps!

So I've read through the history of the msata and the x220 (4286-CTO) and how the BIOS revisions were required during the middle of last year in order to get the Intel 310 and some others to work. Thinking that my little x220 with Bios revision 1.26 (i7, 8gb, 4286-CTO) would be fine, I purchased a Kingston SSDNow mS100 64GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive SMS100S2/64G and installed it yesterday. The instal went without a hitch, but when I restarted the machine, I received a 2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata) error.   I've seen that the 2101 error has been mentioned in relation to a couple of Sandisk msata drives on the forum, but those discussions didn't seem to go anywhere. I just got off my second call with Lenovo support (30 minutes today and 25 minutes last night), only to have them tell me that msata is not supported by my 4286-CTO.  That sounds incorrect, as others with the 4286-CTO seem to have luck with Intel and Renice. What am I doing wrong?  Is this something that another BIOS revision could cure?  At least on one of the sandisk discussions, the OP said that he/she had tested the drive in another computer without a problem, so I don't think it's a problem with the actual drives.   Somebody else mentioned that some drives are not compliant with the JEDEC standard, but that doesn't sound like an explanation to me either.  Thoughts?  Help! Best, sad x220

Answer:2101 Error: X220 with Kingston 64GB msata

I have the same issue with x220.  The mSATA I have is the Sandisk SDSA4DH-064G.  I can also add that the function of the mSATA is the same regardless of whether the mSATA is used in the mSATA slot or on an adapter card in the SATA hard drive bay (Error is 2100 rather than 2101, but the text is the same).  For this reason, I believe the Lenovo BIOS is unable to configure the mSATA drive appropriately.  I imagine that Lenovo could quickly resolve this with a new BIOS. I have tested this drive on a desktop consisting of a Asus P9X79 Deluxe + Intel 3960x running Windows 7, 64-bit.  Device is recognized by BIOS and WIndows Disk Manager.

Hi Guys, I just received the most expensive and the newest dock - 433835U with the hope I can connect a DVI monitor and guess what - no DVI whent the Internal graphic card is used (HD4000). So I am getting VGA out on both the laptop VGA out and the docking station VGA, but none of the DVI ports are working. I tried 2 different monitos and 2 different cables - no success.  If I turn on the NVIDIA  - the DVI ports work, but I don't want to use the NVIDIA cause it draws more power and there is no way to adjust the settings in the BIOS every time I dock or de-dock. What's going on? I can not believe that this does not work.

Answer:T430 with Mini Dock+ series 3 4338-35U NO DVI

Have you had any success resolving this?  I have the identical problem although my environment is running a RHEL 6.3 operating system. I have two external monitors. Using  the docking station (one of the 4338 versions), I can drive both monitors but ONLY if I run with Discrete graphics set in the bios.  In my setup, I used the one VGA port on the docking station and one of the two DVI ports.  I suspect I could use both DVI ports.  (I instruct RHEL to turn off the T430 display when I close the lid and when using AC power.) By the way, the Nividea Optimus is not supported for Linux so I can not use that. However, the Discrete graphics setting in the bios -- like  Nvidea Optimus or probably even worse -- is  terrible power drainer, runs the system really  hot, and kills the  battery life. As a result, I to have switched to  Integrated graphics in the bios.  The battery life is very good now and the system runs quite cool and -- so far -- all programs run Ok.  However, with this setup, I also found that the DVI ports are NOT active on the Docking station!  This is really a pain, having to switch the bios to Discrete in order to use both external monitors and then setting it back to Integrated when I want to run off the battery and get decent battery life. I did find I can use T430 display and one external monitor with Integrated graphics when off the docking station by using the VGA port on ... Hi! I am probably going to buy a T430 mainly due to its massive battery life, but I am wondering if it is possible to use a mini dock plus WHILE the slice (28++) battery is attached, or does the battery not replicate the dock ports? Cheers

Answer:T430 slice battery & mini dock plus series 3

The slice battery uses the dock connector, so this means you won't able to dock with the slice battery attached.

Hello! Im having a little problem with my docking station. ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3. Seems like the DisplayPort does not work. I use dual 1440p monitors from Phillips and want to connect both with DP as the DVI is single-link only. I have one of the monitors plugged in the MiniDP on the side of T430 so i got that working wich is nice.  Is there some kind of firmware or something i need to install to get the DP working on the docking station? Cant remember i have ever done this and as far as i know it ha never worked... Always used it with a single 24" monitor with VGA. Thanks.

Answer:T430 with ThinkPad Mini dock series 3 DisplayPort ...

This issue is driving me crazy!  I bought new DisplayPort Monitors for T430s ThinkPads using the Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I have 4 identical laptops.  Same software and drivers with two Monitors.  One on the Dock DisplayPort and the other Monitor on the PC Mini DisplayPort.   Three laptops work perfectly.  The forth one blinks! I do have a newer T430s with the Invidia Graphics card that has the same symptoms, but I have come to the conclusion that Lenovo does not support multiple monitors with that version.  Lenovo, Please tell me there is a firmware update for the Type 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I saw the link for the T540 dock firmware update.  Will it work on the Series 3 dock?

Your computer may be trying to move the audio from the computer to the monitor. Set up everything as you normally do, but then right-click on the Sound icon on the taskbar and select Playback Devices. Make sure that the speakers selected are those of your laptop and that they are Enabled.

Just received a T430 on Monday and the DVI port on the dock does not work, VGA port is fine.  I'm running Win7 64 bit, 8 gigs of RAM.  I have installed the NVIDIA graphics driver 269.88.  I found this driver on the support page for this T430.  I'm not trying to run multiple monitors or anything like that.  I just want to be able to dock my laptop and use the DVI output.

Hi, pili189012

When you attempt to connect the DVI input, does anything happen? What model of monitor/TV are you trying to connect the DVI to? Finally, when the DVI cable is connected to the dock and to the external device, does anything change in the Screen Resolution screen? (To navigate here, right-click on the Desktop and select Screen Resolution from the list.) How many monitors are listed here?

Best,
Adam

Few are SATA III and its the interface only you'll won't see the speeds of 6GB other than possibly the odd burst of data peaking a bit higher. Its drive specific. However, you still should get a SATA III caddy for it. I did for mine and the price is the same anyway. Note your height though is 430 compatible!!! Assume nothing be certain it is compatible.

I've considered installing Windows XP32bit instead of Windows Vista 64bit, but when installing Windows XP you need to hit F6 key to install RAID drivers for it to detect the Sata HDDs.

This was simple with my old motherboard (ABIT AV8 3rd Eye) because I had a floppy with the required drivers on, but now I don't have any floppy... can I download the files somewhere?

I hope what I've said is clear Please ask if there are any problems understanding something

I am running XP Pro, with Asus K8V SE M\B and currently Maxtor SATA drive.
I needed to clone my hard drive to a new one, as the old one was suspect.
I used Norton Ghost to clone my O\S and data over to the new "WD" SATA drive (which was connected via a sata-usb adapter for convenience)

When inserting the new WD drive in to the M\B, the bios wouldn't detect the drive at all (although Windows had previously). I tried all SATA connectors on the board, but no joy with detection.
The old MAXTOR drive was only 2 yrs old (80gb), and the new drive is 250gb.

I can't see any settings in the bios to detect the sata drive.

Any ideas guys?

Many Thanks

Nick

Answer:Asus K8V SE and SATA Drive detection

IIRC these old VIA sets with the VT8237 southbridge did not upport booting from SATA. I coud well be wrong and it might be that you have to install the VIA motherboard drivers for the SATA to function. Either way it is indeed a pain.

I would reinstall the old drive and make sure the SATA drivers are indeed there. Then I would reclone the new drive from there and stand back and see what explodes.

Good luck.

Hello, and thanks in advance for any help.  Also, my apologies if these issues have been previously resolved; I've spent 2 days searching for answers and none of my effort has resulted in a solution, either here or elsewhere.   I very recently for the first time connected my ThinkPad T430 2344-5GU (i5 core, native screen resolution 1600x900, Intel HD 4000 v9.17.10.2843, NVIDIA Optimus NVS 5400M v9.18.13.1100) to a Panasonic HD TV (native screen resolution 1920x1080) using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI connector, with the hope of playing 1080p movies on my laptop while watching them on the TV.  This seemingly worked fine at first--both audio and video were present--but I quickly noticed that the image on the TV was, very slightly, larger than the image on the laptop screen (cutting off roughly 5% of the image on each of the 4 sides) and that the resolution wasn't 1920x1080.  So I hunted for a solution.   Windows display properties were no help.  In fact, as soon as I tweaked something there I lost the picture on the TV (the options available are "Show desktop only on 1" (the laptop screen), "Show desktop only on 2" (the TV screen), and "Extend these screens", which annoyingly turns the TV blank yet allows the cursor to to enter the TV screen depending on the chosen layout and the cursor's approach direction to the TV).  So, from having a functional-if-slightly-oversized-and-lower-quality picture on the TV screen I went to nothing, at l... I currently have two IDE harddrives in my machine. However the second smaller one is failing so i brought myself a nice shiny 500gb SATA drive. However, if i plug in all the cables into the Sata Drive and then plug the other end into the Motherboard and PSU. When i turn the machine on it won't boot up. I get past the BIOS (Which has detected the new addition) and then the point where it should display the windows loading, i just get a blank screen.

If i switch the computer off and boot up again, i get the message saying "Windows did not boot up correctly" and if i pick safe mode or normal boot up, i still get the blank screen..

If i upplug the hard drive, i get normal operating computer.

Any ideas?

Answer:New Sata Drive detection and Windows Bootup

Yup, boot into Safe Mode, and download and install the SATA/RAID drivers for your particular board. Then, restart, and you should be fine.

You could do the same by unplugging the new HDD, and booting up normally, if you're not getting internet access with Safe Mode.

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

I know this may not be in the right section. I refuse to post in the Mac section as I've never gotten anything useful there.

I'm looking for a firewire Connector cable. NOT an external drive bay. I work on a lot of older Macs and would love to store my OS disks on older drives to boot from. Also faster transfers from failed ibooks to new systems would be another plus. I've googled until my fingers are raw, and haven't found what I want. USB I can get by the truck load. Please only post if you can point me to where these exist, or can tell me why they don't exist.

Hello all, I received by brand new T430s about 48 hours ago.  On the initial startup, I had a mini SATA detection error.  Not a good first impression, but anyways, that issue was supposedly resolved after the customer support rep directed me to install some updates. How can I tell if the disk is working correctly?  I've been running the computer with the task manager open, and so far my "Disk 1" (SanDisk SSD U100 16GB) has shown zero activity, even when the C: drive and CPU are operating at near 100%.  Also, the stats in the bottom right show 0 MB formatted, can that be right? Thanks for your help!

Adam

The SATA connector in this machine is apparently designed to break despite my careful attempt to remove it (while replacing the HDD with an SSD.)   I've search high and low and it's impossible to find the part anywhere. How do I get a new cable?

I have a mini pcie mSATA card that I want to use for a desktop of mine. Kingston sm200s3 60GB

I believe there are only 2 options.
1. SATA > SATA adapter > mSATA card
2. PCIe slot > PCI adapter > mSATA card.

As far as 2. goes; I have found a card that fits into a PCIe slot which has an input for the mSATA card.

I know that this is not the ideal way to hook up the card but I don't see any more options.

Which is there better way to go or what am I missing?

Answer:Mini PCIe and adapter VS. SATA

Whatever has an mSATA interface for it will work.

From here SSD Kingston 60GB SM200S3/60G mSATA p/ Ultrabook,tablet - Atera Inform?tica

its a SATA 3 device, so for optimal performance you should use something that can guarantee enough bandwith to not bottleneck it.

PCIe bandwith depends from number of lanes used (a x1 card has one lane, a x2 card has two and so on) and the PCIe revision/version of both devices. The panel on the right here gives all speeds https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express so just multiply that by the number of lanes the card has and you will find out its bandwith. SATA 3 has 6 GB/s of theoretical max bandwith, although actual transfer speed does not go above 1 GB/s afaik.

This Mini PCIe PCI E mSATA Intel Samsung SSD SATA 3 III Adapter Card with Case | eBay

this SATA III Dual Port to mSATA X 2 w/ PCI-e Bracket | MSATA-2XS3-BKT

are examples of what you listed as 1, and stuff I would orient myself towards if my mobo had SATA 3 connectors already. Because... hey, why waste PCIe slots for that?

Is it possible to install a MINI PCIE SATA xxGB SSD in a 3t?  I read that Lenovo is working some cool software that would allow this and treat the SSD & the Disk Drive as one.  But since I have been for years using multiple drives at home & at work, it wouldn't matter to me if they had different drive designators. I'd love to load the OS and a few programs onto the MINI PCIE SATA xxGB SSD and use the hard drive for a data drive.  I would expect it to be faster with potentially a battery improvement (another device is more power draw but less usage on the HDD.  Which way would it net out, avings or increase in power?). This probably relates to the "whitelist" which seems to be a black eye for Lenovo.  Does any PCIE card need to be on the whitelist or just the catagories listed?   Thanks,Nick

Hi everyone

I have a SATA hard drive in my desktop PC, which I am now getting rid of. I want to reuse the SATA drive with my new Mac Mini, and I think the only option is to use it in an external enclosure and attach it via the firewire interface.

Can anyone point me towards somewhere that will be able to supply me with the parts I need? I have tried one seller on eBay but he has been particularly vague on whether the caddy he supplies is supported!

Thanks for reading

Answer:Solved: Using a SATA hard disk from PC with Mac Mini

You can use either FireWire or USB and it is a shame that FireWire 800 enclosures are so expensive ($60-75) as it would be twice as fast as USB or FireWire 400.
Here is an enclosure made to look like a Mac accessory for $35.00 http://www.adorama.com/MACGS350SUA....ping Site&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=gbase

Hello,

Could anyone identify the components of this cable?

http://www.lindy.co.uk/mini-sas-to-4-x-sata-cable-1m/33506.html

There is the mini sas end, and the 4x sata end, but what is the other connector?

Answer:Mini SAS to SATA cable - quick question

"Connectors: Mini SAS SFF-8087 (Host) to 4 x 7 way SATA latch type connectors (target) and 1 x 8 way sideband connector".

From a little bit of googling, those sideband connectors are for extenders, LEDs, connecting to backplanes, etc. You don't have to use it, if that helps deciding if you should buy one that has that connector.

Hello,
I have a newly home built MSI AM1i motherboard and have it running fine with Windows 8.1. I am trying to expand the number of SATA ports it has (comes with only 2). The mobo has a mini-PCIe card slot.
I purchased a AsMedia 106x, 2-port, mini-PCIe card (had to use a ribbon-cable extender to get it connected).
That all appears to be fine. I struggled a bit with drivers, but eventually found a Windows 7 AsMedia 106x driver set. Loaded that, seems ok.
Problem: When I go to device mgr, it does not see the added 2-ports. When I first boot up, during the black-screen phase, it does report that the AsMedia device is loading and will actually find/name a hard drive that I attach to one of the new ports. It then almost looks like it will load windows, give the nice little blue windows 8 flag and just sits there. I can hear a drive cycle every 2-3 seconds, but nothing.
I eventually have to hit the power button to shut down. If I disconnect the drive added to the new card, it will start up. The AsMedia device looks to load during a black-screen phase, but reports no device found, and then loads Win 8 Correctly. When I get in, again, no SATA ports shown for the new device.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Mini-PCIe SATA-card is not recognized by MSI AM1i mobo

Usually the mini PCIe slot is reserved for Wireless Nic cards.

When I try to boot my W520, I get a BIOS boot up error : "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". I am using PNY XLR8 240GB SSD. It worked fine for a month. I also have PGP installed and whole disc encrypted. I installed an update of Intel Management Engine Firmware and Intel Chipset, both are the latest from lenovo site because I was experiencing expreme slowness from my harddrive. Programs would freeze. Webpages would take forever to load..The next time I rebooted, I got the error. If I leave the SSD out for a bit, and put the SSD back in, the disk will work for some time... but on next reboot, it is again detection error.. TRIM is enabled on my system. I am not sure how the SSD died so quickly. I am back to using my HDD but I am not happy. I want a solution... is this a intel chipset issue? Intel IMEI issue? Is  the PNY SSD just a bad model? I've googled plenty and dont really see a solution. Sometimes there is a firmware update.. PNY has no firmware updates for my drive.. I don't see anybody else using PNY on their W520, but plenty of people are experiencing Error 2100 with SSD on their W520.. somethings fishy.. help please! thanks in advance !

Answer:W520: PNY XLR8 240GB SSD with error "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"

Hello,
I don't have a ThinkPad W520 or a PNY SSD, but could it be simply that the SSD is coming loose inside the ThinkPad's chassis?  I suppose this could occur if a 7mm high SSD was inserted into a 9.5mm high 2.5" drive bay with a ~2mm spacer to "pad" the unused vertical space.

Hello! First post on this forum but been browsing for some time. My machine: ThinkPad S430, type-model: 3364-5HG, Win 7 x64, 500 GB HGST HDD. My problem is notably similiar to this one: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504.The problem occurs on very irregular basis, at times a couple of times a day but other times it goes weeks between the interrupts. It starts with some sort of short mechanical sound from the HDD, similar to the one when you turn the laptop of by pressing and holding the power button (only do this if I absolutely have to, it feels like choking someone with a pillow). After the sound, the screen freezes for a couple of seconds before the short bluescreen mentioned in the link occurs. The rest is as follows by the link above. Basically the only difference is the HDD brand (HGST in my S430 and Samsung in the link). After reboot (with power button during the automated reboot after bluescreen when the error code occurs), the laptop works fine.  It's getting quite annoying when this happens and also the suspension of not knowing when it will happen next is not good for my heart. What to do? Thanks in advance! Regards,Nicholas

Hi, I have a month old T440s. It has the original 256GB SSD drive (didn't open\replace anything). After uninstalling some antivirus software win8 had problems booting. To make a long story short, I tried different things to fix the MBR and eventually got to the point of trying to do a full factory restore, which didn't work (it couldn't find the recovery partition). When I boot up now, I get the "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" error.Aside from trying to restore using Lenovo CD (shipped to me, will be here in a couple of days), what else cn be done and what caused this ordeal? I don't mind about the data on the SSD, I just really need my laptop functioning ASAP. Thanks for any advise you may have!

I have an issue with a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch Windows 8. It has a 512GB SSD. (Believe its Samsung)  Earlier today the computer frooze while saying plug in your charger, so I had to hold down the power button to do a forced shutdown. Upon turning it back on I got this error after hanging on the Lenovo logo for a good five minutes. Error: 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2) The SSD is not visible anywhere not in BIOS or anywhere else. I've tried reseating it however it doesn't help. The BIOS is upto date, any I'm unable to update the SSD Firmware as I cannot get onto Windows as per the instrutions here - http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504 1. I cant update firmware for the SSD as I cant get onto Windows2. The BIOS firmware is the latest 3. I've taken the SSD out and put it back in4. Reset BIOS settings5. Disconnected Battery and left it for an hour I'm panicing as all my data is on there, I assumed it was safe as it's SSD.  Please can anyone assist?

Answer:X1 Carbon - SSD Failure? Error 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2)

Sorry for a 2500 GBP laptop I'd expect better really. This is the SECOND X1 Carbon I've had out of 4 to fail me with the SSD. I've lost all my data (Yes I know I should have backed it up) that I'll never be able to recover. Ultimately I've given up on the brand of Lenovo, my company who supplies exclusively Lenovo hardware to our customers are now switching to Dell as a direct result of the lack of support and poor hardware/firmware design. Just ordered 2X Dell XPS 13's as a replacement for my less than 6 month old Lenovo X1 Carbon, never thought it would come to this but the lack of support, knowledge and consitant hardware failures has left me no choice, I can't operate or do my work on an Lenovo X1 Carbon, fingers crossed the Dell will be better as it cant get any worse than Lenovo. To anyone who has Google'd the error and found this thread some cold facts; According to my resources this error can be caused if the system is not shutdown, BSOD or sudden power loss. If it doesn't resolve itself, there is a good chance it wont. Cycle the computer numrous times, let the battery run flat. Try it a few more times. Reset the BIOS, Update the BIOS. Prevention is better than cure, supposedly updating the SSD Firmware might have prevented this from happening in the first place.Lots of reports that this is an issue with BIOS and Firmware issues that result in an early death. I can confirm this having happened twice to me on different generation and model... Read more

I've just received my new G30-163. Every time I switch it on it asked if I'd like to set up HDD2 for mirroring. I always hit cancel, but it repeates the request with every start up. As a result, my second drive does not show up and can not be used. I have tried reinstalling the whole system from the disk provided, but I still get the same request upon completion.

I really don't want to have to go through sending the computer back, so I'm hoping you can tell me how to fix it from here.

Answer:Qosmio G30-163 asks if I'd like to set HDD2 for mirroring

I don?t know how you have changed this option but as far as I know the RAID mirroring can be set in the BIOS.
As far as I know Toshiba strongly discouraged changing the RAID configuration in the BIOS because selecting the wrong settings might destroy the data on your hard disk drives.
In some special circumstances, however, configuring the RAID in the BIOS is required, e.g. to prepare a fresh hard disk drive for RAID operation

But please take extra care when changing the RAID configuration to avoid accidental loss of data!

1. Turn on your notebook and press [ESC] until a message appears: "Check system. Then press [F1] key."

2. Press [F1] to enter the BIOS Setup.

3. Press [PGDN] twice to move to the third BIOS page.

4. Move the cursor to the Create State entries and change the states as required (you cannot change the Current State entries).

5. Press [Space] to cycle through all possible RAID scenarios possible.

6. Then move the cursor to Execute Creation.

7. A message appears at the bottom of the screen:
"Warning: If you change RAID array, you need to install OS again."

8. Press [Space].

9. Another message appears at the bottom of the screen: "Are you sure? All data on the HDD(s) will be destroyed. Do you really want to do this? If "Yes", please type the key string which is written in the manual."

10. Enter [1][2][3][4] and then [Enter].

Due to lack of HDD capacity, I replaced HDD No. 2 (Drive D:) on my Qosmio G30 with a bigger one (640GB instead of 200GB).
Booting is allright, Windows 7 starts right away. But the HDD ist not shown în the Window "Computer" (the replaced one used to be shown).

There is just Drive C: and the DVD-Drive.
Do I have to format Drive D: first? How can I check whether the HDD hardware is o.k.?

thx a lot

Hi,

You need to prepare the drive first before it can be used.

Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

Initialize the second drive, then create a new Primary Partition, then format it as NTFS

Hi, Recently bought a T430 (Without Optimus). All's good except the Laptop Temp. The left Palm rest seems to get un usually warm, no matter what OS I am on. Its a dual boot by the way, Win 7 + Ubuntu 12.04.2. With Ubuntu or CentOS or Scientific Linux, the laptop gets unusually warm...The temp monitoring utility (lm_sensors) says that its at about 45 C. I get the same temp reading on Win 7 too, but somehow, the laptop just feels more warm with Linux than Win 7.As of right now, I am on Win 7 (for past 4-5) hours.....did some browsing, MS Sec Essentials did a full disk scan, I saw some youtube vids and was toying with some Perl Scripts, and the temp is at 45C, and the left palm rest is quite warm. Its warm enough that I have to stop typing every few minutes  Has anyone else noticed this issue? Is there a work around to this issue? Is there something I should worry about ? Please let me know. I installed the new updates a month ago. Answer:Thinkpad T430 gets significantly warm on Win 7 as well as Linux. How about a fellow T430 user ?

In my experience, Linux isn't as good with power management as Windows. 45 degrees sounds about right for a current-gen Intel processor due to Turbo Boost causing temperature spikes as you use your system normally. As for the warm left palmrest, the hard drive sits under there, so maybe the drive just tends to produce more heat. Assuming you have a conventional hard drive, give it a defrag to reduce operating stress (and hence power consumption and heat output).

I have an A200-27Z

I want to remove the HDD2 cover for 2 reasons:
firstly to install a 2nd disk
secondly to investigate why PC cards will only insert halfway.

I've removed the 2 screws but the cover simply will not budge. Something else is holding it.

I'd rather not apply force or open the entire casing.

Anyone know the secret technique?

Thanks in advance

the reason for you PC card halfway issue is: this is a ExpressCard 26pin Slot and not a PCMCIA Slot. The card looks diffrent!

Hello,

I have 2 HDDs in the laptop (as Master and Slave) and would like to install XP and keep the originally installed Vista.

Vista is on the Master and tried to install XP to the Slave while the Master was disabled.
The Slave was the first and CD Rom the second.
But after a few min it says 'No HDD are connected '.

Please help me to solve this problem !

I am not a pro user, but hope will understand your help.

Thanks beforehand and Best Regards,
Azuve.

Answer:How to install XP to HDD2 and to keep Vista on HDD1 in Satellite A200-23W?

I think you need an SATA driver.

The SATA driver is needed because the newer notebooks series are equipped with the SATA HDD controller.
The Win XP does not contain the SATA driver and you have to install it using the external floppy disk or you could include the SATA driver using an nLite software.
This software help you to create a new XP CD including the SATA driver.

By the way; The SATA driver is a part of the Intel Matrix Storage Manger.
So check Intel page for the needed drivers.

I received my T430 today running Win7 Pro.  Has a 180 gb SSD as boot drive and a 500 HDD secondary drive in the optical bay. After running all updates for Windows, I went into the Lenovo solution center and ran system updates, which included updates for the light, for the display, etc...along with BIOS update. Next I ran Hardware scan in the Lenovo Solution Center and got an error for the Intel SSD drive, the error was 'Targeted read test' = Failed. While still in the Lenovo Solution Center, I clicked on 'System' -> 'Storage Devices'.  I noticed that the 'Primary Drive' under Storage Devices is showing it to be my 500 HDD drive;  And the 'Additional Drive 2' under Storage Devices showing my SSD drive. 1. how do I correct this error above.  'Targeted Read Test'  failed 2. is this error possibly related to my SSD not being recognized as the Primary Drive. Markvov

Answer:T430 - Hardware Scan Error

Hi, Markov55

I did some research and found this thread from the forums here. It seems that several users purchased Lenovo Twists and had the SSD fail this test as well. Many of them, however, discovered that both drives passed the Targeted Read Test if tested independently. So I would try testing them one at a time and see if it still happens.

As for the primary drive, which of the two drives is Windows installed on? You can go to Disk Management by following this path: Control Panel ? Administrative Tools ? Computer Management ? Disk Management. Here you can select the your drives and change the letter and path of them, with C:\ being the main drive normally.

Hope it helps,
Adam

My Thinkpad T430 (3.5 years old) has recently become unstable - freezing or unexpectedly shutting down.  After booting the system in SAFE mode and run the Lenovo hardware diagnostics, the HDD was identified as failing (all other tests ran without failures).  I then ran the Lenovo "Recovery Tool" in safe mode, which identified two failure types.  The first error type was the identification of 8 sequential defective sectors which I had the tool correct (successfully).  The second failure messages were: "ERROR DIFFERENT OF UNC", "CANNOT CONTINUE TESTING" and "ERROR TIMEOUT".  No solution to these error messages were recommended by the test software.I did a shut-down and re-boot of the system (to safe mode) and ran the Storage Recovery Tool again, with no defective sectors identified, but the same 3 messages were returned after about 30% of the HDD testing was completed - which is when the testing was stopped by the program.  I have seen a few comments online regarding the existence of possible fixes, but I have not seen anything documented with sufficient information that I can try it.On what may be a related note, a Virus (Trojan.Gen.2) was found on my system, by my Norton Security Software, about a week ago.  From the message the software returned at that time, the Trojan was found instantly (but who knows) and "quarantined".  I subsequently ran a full system scan by Norton's, with no errors identified.... Answer:T430 Windows 7 HDD Error Messages

"(slow operation, Windows Explorer hanging, inability to update Adobe reader, etc.)" Also symptoms of malware.  Don't rely on Norton as being foolproof.  You might have picked up something prior to the trojan being identified.  Your disk might be bad, too.  Bad sectors is a good sign of that.  You really should bite the bullet on this and reinstall everything when you get the new drive.  Never trust a PC that has been infected and then "cleaned".  The attack vectors are too sophisiticated anymore.  Don't clone that disk.  Do a fresh install.
