Lenovo T400s problems after cleaning

Question: Lenovo T400s problems after cleaning

Hello, I have a Lenovo T400s that was full of dust, so because of high temperature and slow performance, I decided to clean the cooler all by myself. After carefully removing every single part, I managed to reach the cooler and clean it. I've successfully reattached every single piece of hardware, with temperature now reaching a maximum of 70 degrees Celsius in high-performance mode. Still, there are a bunch of issues that I'm yet to repair: 1. The overall performance of the laptop is slower than before, with the browser and all the other apps clearly slowed down by something, even after starting the laptop. 2. Sometimes, whenever I plug in the power cord, the laptop freezes all of a sudden. It happened to me several times either when the OS is loading or when I was working on the laptop. After I cleaned the laptop, I got an error saying "Plugged in, not recharging," but I've fixed it by removing and reconnecting the battery. 3. The Bluetooth adapter doesn't seem to work anymore. Whenever I try to connect a Bluetooth mouse, the laptop freezes. Any idea on the source of these problems and how could I fix them? Thanks in advance. I'm running Winodws 8 and the standard hardware configuration of the laptop, with no upgrades.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo T400s problems after cleaning

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A week ago, the wireless internet router in my  house had to be replaced. Afterwards, the internet speed on my Lenovo ThinkPad T400s slowed down considerably. Two other household laptops have had no problem. I have installed all recommended updates and reinstalled the router number, but it still clips along at a very slow pace once I begin to surf the internet (as in minutes opposed to seconds when moving from site to site). It does not behave this way when I am connected in public places, however. Any advice?

I have a T400S that is only 9 months old and I seem to have a flaky 'A' key that greatly hinders my typing.  I am hoping that a removal\cleaning will do the trick.  Anyone have experience  or recommendations on this? Thanks

Answer:Keycap removal \ cleaning on T400S

What do you mean "flaky." Because I have the "P" key where if you press it from the side, it doesnt depress smoothly like the rest of the other keys. though if i press the P key straight up from the top then it depresses smoothly. Do you think I should replace it or just let the key slowly wear in??and as for removing the keycap, jst carefully take your finger and lift it from the top of the key until it comes off. it shouldnt break but just be careful because we are dealing with small contraptions here

Hello. I cleaned by T400s keyboard today after some juice reached the keys and the laptop doesn't seem to start anymore. I removed the battery and the power cord, tried the 10 times power button press trick, still no result. Does resetting the CMOS resolve the problem? At the first glance, it seems the laptop receives power because the fingerprint reader LED is turned on, but it turns off as soon as I disconnect the charger. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer:T400s won't start after keyboard cleaning

It sounds like the juice got down beyond the keyboard and shorted something out

Hey all,

I have a client that just started getting BSoDs on W7 32 bit, on multiple laptops for this one user in particular. I'm trying to get it nailed down HW or SW. All HW diags come out clean, no viruses, and Malwarebytes scans with no issues, used Ultimate Boot CD, etc.

So my next step, as suggested by you, is to find the *.dmp files and debug. Followed the steps, and this is my first debug for a client, woot! (rolls eyes)

So the only one I have right now is the minidump file. The actual memory dump is over 300 MBs and is still processing, so I think I will try to copy it out and run it tonight.

Here is the output of the mini, thanks for your help!

We installed on three T400s Laptops Windows 7 Prof 32 Bit and all of them freeze sometimes after a couple of hour work. After that you need to hold the power button and restart the notebook. I already installed all the newest drivers on them. I switched off all the power options in BIOS but we still get this problem. Where could it be? What else could I try? I'm happy for any advice.

Answer:Lenovo T400s just freeze

Hi,I have the same anoying problem but with a Lonovo T400 and with win7 x64. The shutdowns also happen really randomly and I did not managed yet to determine the problem.Sometimes my screen just freezes and the computer does not respond to anything and sometimes it shows a BSOD before it wents black but most time it just shuts down/ goes blck. Every time this happens, the LED on the left side next to the battery LED is illuminated as if the notebook still runs! To restart it I first have to hold the power-on button until the notebook is completely off and then restart it. The system protocol says the following (german windows): Problemsignatur:  Problemereignisname:    BlueScreen  Betriebsystemversion:    6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.48  Gebietsschema-ID:    1031Zusatzinformationen zum Problem:  BCCode:    7f  BCP1:    0000000000000008  BCP2:    0000000080050031  BCP3:    00000000000006F8  BCP4:    FFFFF80002E9BE58  OS Version:    6_1_7600  Service Pack:    0_0  Product:    256_1 Sometimes it is also just the Error 41 (Kernel-Power).  What might be interesting is that the complete issue never happened if I booted in safe mode. Anyone know if the T400s is coming back to the Lenovo site?  All I see is the T400, T500 and T410.  I did read that Lenovo is backed up on T410s and T510 orders, and that's why they are not there at the moment.  I would think they'd still have a stack of T400s boxes to sell.

Hello,I own a new T400_s_. And I'm very surprised about the fan speed. While my "old" T400 had a low system load the fan speed was 0 rpm. Normally the fan speed didn't reach a speed of about 2000 rpm and I didn't notice the fans sound. The T400_s_ starts with 0 rpm and 4-5 minutes later the speed reaches approx 3750 rpm. What fan speed is normal for T400s???I would be very pleased to get a lot of info about T400_s_ fan speed.tia and greetings, Oli

Hi, I am a new member here , the pre-order service from Lenovo made me register here. Soon, I am thinking to T400s however , my all motivation is down with the level of support from Lenovo Japan. They promised to call be back shorlty, just to pass the phone to the person in charge ,however i waited 5 hours and then called back myself, now i was talkign to completely new guy, while customizing the T400s i was expecting real technical support not just like YES /No dialog with no extra feedback, at least some advice or anything. I am very dissapointed, as i was really  waiting to buy this laptop. I just think that Lenovo is enjoying the legacy of IBM  or they have the different level of service in different countries. Can anyone please write me any information  regarding the T400s , have you already had an experience working on this laptop or please let me know whether I shoud buy LEnovo laptops ever. I wonder if the service is like this , the what should i expect from T400s performance ?I just want to get the real quality, support for the money that i pay.

Hello,my new lenovo T400s works quite fine. But two things are getting on my nerves! The first problem is a very strange sound. It's not very loud but its a very aggravating sound! In some forum posts people explained the reason of the strange noise is caused by the switching between the c2 and c4 processor state. So I tried the kernel optionprocessor.max_cstate=2But the sound is still there.I would be very very glad if someone could help me. Every hint is very welcome.tia and greetings,Oli

I have the following problems with my T400s: - The right side silver hinge part has become loose from the body. It can be shifted freely back and forth, causing the screen to wobble. There is a small black sticker om the back under the hinge, and I think this is covering a screw that might be holding the hinge in place. Can I remove this sticker and try to tighten the screw, without voiding the warranty? - Another thing that is loose is the DVD drive. When a disc is spinning at high speed, the entire drive unit is shaking against the rest of the computer. This makes a noise so loud that it interferes with talking. I have fixed this by stuffing some folded paper in on top and below the drive. Does anyone have a more elegant solution to this? Maybe there are some internal screws that just need to be tightened? - Sometimes the computer wont turn on. There is no light in the finger print reader and the power button does nothing. This has happened about five times, always when on running on a well charged battery. The way to fix it seems to be by removing the battery, wait for a minute and then put it back in place again. - The last problem is that the CPU makes a high frequency nigh. I understand from this forum, that this is a general problem with some Intel C2D chips, and the only thing that can be done is to throttle the CPU down in power manager? Anyway, I have had some bad experiences with Lenovo repair service here in Denmark, so that is the reason ... Answer:Assorted T400s problems

I do not work for Lenovo but I do not believe that removing the sticker would void the warranty.  I have had IBM thinkpads repaired where several of the stickers had fallen off completely and I never had any issues with service. The only thing I can think of for the drive would be to find some thin self adhesive foam which would be a better solution in the long run, I have never seen this particular issue before.  If you know someone else with a T400s I would ask to swap their drive to see if it is a drive issue or a chasis issue (possible the drive is slightly out of spec). Have you run the bios updates as far as the power on issues?  Seems like a firmware issue. You don't need to throttle the CPU, only disable the "deep sleep" ability.

I have had too many problems with my expensive new T400s! Firstly, connection via LAN is unreliable, with a message asking me to connect the LAN cable periodically coming up when the cable is already connected (and I have tried several cables and even a different router and the same thing lappens, with loss of connection when the message appears). The rep. in Atlanta I talked to thinks this is a systemboard problem and I will have to send the machine in to change the board. I am not thrilled. Secondly, there have been periodic crashes when resuling from sleep. I open the lid and the machine is dead and has to be hard rebooted... Finally, I am very disappointed with the low-quality screen shipped with this machine. It is not as good as the one on my old T40! There is an especial problem at the dark end of the spectrum where all colors seem to merge into one blur, and I can't do photo editing because I can't see what is happening (plus, most photos are displayed poorly). I hope Lenovo will at least offer a higher-quality display option so I can get this one upgraded (I would be quite prepared to pay for it!), perhaps when I send it in for a systemboard change (for now I am using wireless, which works fine). It is pretty ridiculous to sell a high-end machine like this with only a lousy display on offer!!!

Answer:T400s Problems with screen after reconnection power.

I have this too. I believe it has to do with a changed power state (or however you call this) since the moment of suspension / hibernation. I think it's even reproducable: 1. Have your PC plugged on AC (respectively not) 2. Suspend / hibernate your PC 3. Unplug (respectively do connect to charger) 4. Resume & login, voil! So what I started doing is e.g. first unplug my laptop before I suspend and leave home... You can imagine. A graphics driver issue?

Hi, As per Subject of this message, when i try to start the "Lenovo Microphone Mute" service it starts and immediatelly aborts again with the message "Started and Stopped service. Some services stop automatically because it is not used by other programs or services". I suppose this is the reason why also my MIC mute buton doesn't do anything. It doesn't show amber light nor does it mute the microphone. The speaker-mute button does work correctly though. The system is installed via the Lenovo System Update. I also tried to manually uninstall and reinstall the hotkey drivers without any success. I read some more similar issues on this forum and on the internet, but not a clear solutions. Is it a known bug in the driver? Is there a procedure known how to get my MIC-Mute button to work? Thanks, Jan (Oh, b.t.w. It is a 64bits Win7-Ultimate-dutch OS)

Answer:Win7/t400s: Can not start "Lenovo Microphone Mute" service + MIC-Mute key not working!

Ok, i figured it out myself. When you use Lenovo's system update to install/update all Lenovo packages after a fresh windows 7 install, then the hotkey drivers are installed before or simultaniously with the System Interface Driver. So i followed this procedure to fix it: Uninstalled the System Interface Driver via Windows Programs configuration screenRebootUninstall the hotkey drivers via the horkey installation program (and select "remove installation")RebootRe-install the System Interface DriverRebootRe-install the hotkey driversReboot Now open the System Manegement -> Services window and verify that the Lenovo Microphone Mute service is running. If so you can  now operate the MIC-Mute button and when pressed it also will show the amber led when it is muted. Regards, Jan

Hello, I've had a Lenovo Y580 for about an year now and it has started to heat up to really high temperatures about 65 degrees on the hdd and above 90 on the graphics card and cpu. I contacted the Lenovo support center in my region and the person advised me to clean my laptop instead of sending it for repair. So my question is if I open up the laptop to reach the motherboard will it void warranty and if I decide to replace the thermal paste will this void the warranty?

Answer:Cleaning the Lenovo y580

hi Te4ko,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Opening the computer will not void your warranty, same as replacing/upgrading some parts.
but, damages on parts or cosmetics during the replacement won't be covered.

Just be extra careful on opening the system and here check this manual of your system disassembly.

check this article about warranty concerns

Hi, I've recently just purchased the lenovo Y50. I noticed that the ventalation areas on the bottom of the laptop are accumulating a lot of dust. I was wondering how to clean this? Should I take off the bottom cover and try to blow the dust out or take some kind of wet sponge and swipe across the exterior of the vent? Thanks!

Answer:Cleaning Dust off of Lenovo Y50

Welcome to the forum! I would try using a can of compressed air to blow out the fan and ventilation grills.  Use short bursts of air to blow out the passages as long burst may over rev the fan.  Also be sure to blow air in both the intake and exhaust grills to remove dust from both directions.  That always works best for me.  Canned compressed air is available at any office supply store or big box store.  I would avoid using a damp cloth or sponge on the grills until you have the insides blown out of all the dust bunnies.  Getting the inner accumulated dust wet may solidify it when dried if it isn't totally removed. If you have any removable covers on the bottom that have vent slits you can remove these for cleaning.  As for removing the entire laptop bottom that would take quite a bit of disassembling to accomplish that chore.

Not for the first time I've been attempting to remove some of the pre-installed stuff on my Thinkpad E335 Win 7 Pro x64 and once again doing so has rendered the system unusable. I'm not talking about trial software versions and so on - there was none of that unwanted stuff on this machine - but there are a lot of Lenovo system utilities which cause it to be rather sluggish starting up though perhaps less so once up and running. I also installed Win 8.1 on the system and there is a marked contrast in responsiveness, Win 8.1 being far the lighter footed. Yet 8.1 has none of these system utilities which to my mind says simply that they are not necessary. Yet it seems they are so integrated into Win 7 that removing them damages 7 itself.

So, unless Lenovo users are confident of their ability to recover a borked system, I strongly advise not trying to remove any of this stuff and I'm also wondering how the upcoming Win 10 upgrade will deal with all these integrated utilities. If I only had the original Win 7 system I would be treading very carefully.

I don't know whether Lenovo are alone adding all this system management stuff - I guess not - so other makes might need to be treated carefully too.

Answer:Cleaning up a Lenovo Thinkpad

Lenovo is not alone, all the manufacturers are bundling software they think we need. I wish hardware manufacturers would only supply us with the necessary drivers and leave the rest to us. Afterall, we only need sites like MajorGeeks that tests and hosts software programs. And there's the Support Forums with invaluable advice.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post here, I hope anyone can help me. I recently bought refurbised Lenovo ThinkPad X1 model 1294-A2Y and everything worked fine until I opened it. The reason for opening was looking for battery info, since the battery I got with the laptop was bad and I wanted to replace it. Here's what I did, i opened all as instructed, unscrewd all the parts, take the keyboard off but i didn't touch the processor cooling system. Than I put it all back together. When I pushed the power on button nothing happened, the laptop won't turn on. Than i tare it apart again, plug the battery and the power cord off and pressed the power on button for 20 seconds. After pluging the battery and the power cord laptop started fine, but the problem is that it works only for a few minutes and than turns off all of a sudden. And than it won't start again, and I need to tare all apart in order to turn it off again. Did anyone had a similar situation? Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance

Is it possible to clean the dust inside the lappy. or fans by the user itself? If skripatch is reading this could you please tell me you cpu temp when it is in idle ( just surfing) in power saver mode and in high perf mode separately?

Answer:Cleaning the dust? lenovo Y510

I read whole Ideapad section every day and sometimes Lenovo 3000. Just do not have time sometimes to reply. I try to reply every case I can handle... Mine is about 55-60 permanently (CPU).To clean dust you have to vent it by pressed air or take off that part of Y510 that s above cooler. Usually I vent cooler once a month - that's more than enough.

Hi. I was wondering if you recommend cleaning under touchpad. After a year some dirt accumulated under my touchpad. Sometimes when I have wet hands drops of water slip under touchpad as well. Is it essential to clean under my touchpad and can it affect other pieces of hardware like graphic card or CPU if I don't clean it?

Hey so I just got a T510 and I have realized that the back of my laptop is full of my finger prints due to opening and closing the screen. Now my question is, what cleaning tools do I use to wipe it off and make it look brand new again? This is probably the only thing I hate about this laptop, that every time you touch it, it leaves a mark  Please help me ! Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum!I use a microfiber cloth and small chunk of water to clean my gears, but if something is really dirty and can't be cleaned through water then I apply tiny amount of soap to the wet cloth. There are many products available in the market too, but I don't trust any, YMMV.Lenovo Blogs has some tips too:- http://lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=121Hope it helps.

Hi whitecheese131,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Check if you have active warranty for your tech support in warranty service.
Else review your system manual that can be downloaded from the support site for your model and check if there is also a module available from service training. With an air compressed can, you can blow dust particles safely from the sytemboard and filters.

Highlighted links can help as reference guide on opening the chassis and if you lack tools then a service center nearest you may be a better option.

Hope this help answer your query.

On the shop's website it is stated that opening my laptop will result in warranty being voided. On the other hand, taking my laptop for dust cleaning to a certified service can last for even two weeks. I remember taking my previous PC for CPU cooler change and it was there for 2 weeks. What I wanted to do was clean the cooler of the CPU and see if the WiFi antenna was maybe unplugged because I was having almost no signal. I did open it *carefully* without even scratching a screw, cleaned the cooler, noticed that the main wire of the WiFi card was unplugged, while the auxiliary one was plugged correctly, plugged it back and closed the laptop, again, *carefully*. Can any of this void my warranty? Also, I planned to swap the HDD with an SSD I've had for some time. Could that represent a problem because I am changing some parts.I am not a certified servicer but I can certainyl say that I'm experienced enough to even disassemble the whole laptop and put it back again (no, I haven't done this nor do I plan to) without leaving a mark so why would opening it void my warranty if I make no damage to it.I just want to know whether I still have my warranty. Thank you in advance.

Answer:Will opening my Lenovo Z50-75 and cleaning it void my warranty?

Hi MrVene ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

In general sense , cleaning or opening the chassis or upgrading would not void the warranty as long as there won't be any induce damage to the parts during and after such change. (additional reference discussion here and here )

For the same reasons why OEM have the hardware manual dissassembly guide made available for free download and Lenovo Service Training . This may also be different on regional basis so having technical support informed first is still the best way to proceed so that proper guidelines are checked and that there is documentation for both party to reference.

Hope this help answer your query.

If you find that your fan is running more often or at higher speeds than it used to, or your system is running warmer than it used to, it could be a sign that the fan and heat sink could be clogged with dust or lint.  As air is drawn in from the bottom on these systems and then blow through the fins of heat sink before exiting on the left side of the system, just or lint may be drawn in more frequently if the system is frequently operated on a bed, blanket or other cloth surface, or in a dusty environment. If your system is out of warranty and might be running warmer than normal as described above, you might clean the fan and heat sink to lower system fan speeds and operating temperature. First, remove AC and battery and turn system over.  Locate the fan cover.  Remove the 2 screws and lift up the cover from the edge. Next, remove the 3 screws marked by the arrows to remove the fan - carefully locate and uplug the fan connector from the system board as you lift it out.  After removing the fan, it should look like this...  Using a can of compressed air, blow out the area, blow the dust out of the fan. Clean out the heat sink fins by blowing air through the outside vents so that the dust is blow back toward the the fan locations.  Make sure the fins are all free from lint, fibers and dust.  After all dust has been cleared out, carefully reinstall the fan and 3 mounting screws.  A magnetic screwdrive... Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

Hello, let me begin with how satisfied i've been with my Y570 since i bought it 2 years ago, it has met every expectation i had for it. But 1 month ago, my laptop fan stopped being able to use the Efficient Thermal Dissipation from Thermal Management. Actually, the only option that seems to work is Dust Cleaning since it speeds up my fan and stops it until it's over. I already fully cleaned the fan, and i don't know what else to do. Thank you very much beforehand

:confused Hi! I ran the Windows XP cleaning procedure for Malware. It seems to have worked! YEA! I'm online through wired ethernet highspeed dsl and am not getting any other popups or registry change notifications through Mcafee BUT! Here's the things I am still encountering:

1. My Windows Update is not working and tells me that my updates are disabled. Even when I force a windows update request, it gives an error?

2. I also have a wireless adapter in my laptop. It says it is connected, but when I attempt to use it to connect to the internet it tells me I need to clear my DNS cache?

Thanks for all your work in helping me resolve these nasty malware problems. I look forward to your suggestions on fixing the above continuing issues. I noticed them before I ran the removal proceedures and they have not changed since removal (I noticed the problem starting about a week ago). I do not know where the malware came from, but I have a teenager in the house and I suspect porn. Although all browing histories have been cleared.

The SuperAntispyware detected and cleaned over 20 malware. The spybot S&D encountered 24 malware and the Malwarebytes detected over 30 malware, all clean. The Combofix ran fine and the mgtools ran fine. I am attempting to attach log files.

Thanks again for your help, I look forward to your direction - Julie

Hi guys.

I'm cleaning up my laptop hoping it will resolve certain issues i'm having.

I'm following the instructions at

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313

but after i download the tools necessary, i try to run them and get this:

.......\SuperAntiSpyware.exe is not a valid Win32 application

Any ideas? This message also comes up now when i'm trying to run any new downloads, such as IE7

Cheers

Ian

Answer:XP Cleaning problems

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Sounds like you could have a Bagle infection. Try renaming SuperAntiSpyware.exe to SAS.EXE and see if it will run. If not, just continue on with the other steps and come back to it later. The same applies to all steps.

Hi. I have a Dell Vostro 1000 Win XP laptop here that I have cleaned from Vundo/Variant, Vundo/Variant-Slider, Trojan.Dropper n.exn and Trojan Dowloader HTML:RENOS. I've used MBAM, SAS, GMER, HJT, ESET online scanner, Symantec Vundo Removal Tool. This thing is clean now, I'm pretty sure of that. But my problem is this: there are 2 user accounts - 1 admin rights and 1 limited rights. Everything I did was in the admin account. But now, when I go into the limited account, I have 2 error windows that popup; both referring to dll files that can't be found (of course, I believe these are leftover errors from the viruses being removed)

FAHAPERA.DLL and RERIPAGA.DLL

IE7 was having difficulty updating security files in WU which could not be resolved due to corrupted files, so I installed IE8 and that works fine now.

I also had to remove the high and low settings in the registry and then reinstall the CD/DVD because XP would not write to CDs.

Everything seems to be working fine now, except for these 2 errors I get in the limited user account. Can you help me please? I am attaching a copy of the errors. Thanks.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

Hi,

I followed the Malware Removal Guide yesterday and did everything as instructed. I am still having issues with being redirected to random search pages or other internet pages when I click on links in Firefox.

I think the problem came on 3.11.09 when my son tried to run some sort of program crack. There were other problems but I think the cleanup took care of most of them.

I'm attaching the logs from the cleanup. Please let me know what else I need to do!

Hi!

I am running Windows Vista Home Edition x64 with 4GB RAM.
My Security Software is: Ad Aware, Avast, Comodo and Microsoft Security Essentials. I also downloaded Spybot and Spyware Blaster.

A few days ago Windows Update gave me an 80070002 error message and I couldn't update. I tried everything I found on the internet for this error but couldn't fix it. Then I thought it could be malware so I followed your guide to try to fix it.

Obviously I couldn't update before the cleaning procedure, and MSConfig didn't let me start on normal mode (it would always change to selective after clicking on apply).

I ran the programs and they stated my system was clean, so I didn't want to bother you with it (scans were run yesterday), and i continued looking around for solutions, I found that perhaps i couldn't update because my trustedinstaller.exe file was gone (and still don't know where to get it back). I reenabled disc emulation software (which i disabled and enabled according to defogger procedures) but now it says it needs SPTD and i should turn kernel debuggers off. I tried reinstalling sptd (which went successfull), and tried reinstalling daemon tools but it gives me an error message 14.

I tried disabling all services that weren't from microsoft as suggested in daemon forums and then i got a message from avast that i had a rootkit in windows/system32/vfsfpservice.exe, and it asked me if i wanted to delete so i said yes since i... Read more

You should never install more than one antivirus program. Having Avast, Comodo, and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) installed would be 3 and this is an absolute no no and could cause many problems!! Howver I do not see Comodo and MSE installed based on your logs. I do see leftovers from Comodo but it does not seem to be running.

Most Windows Update issues are not due to malware and yours seems to fit this statement as your logs are clean. I suggest that you post in the Software Forum. Do note however your HijackThis log looks rather strange in the O23 ( services ) section. Having you been playing around/tweaking with your Windows services. If so, I highly recommend against this. This is one of the most frequent causes for people having problems like you describe.

It must be just a coincidence because the only program that found anything was Hitman and we did not have you fix anything with it. Thus no real changes to your PC were made. Just scan logs were collected.

Let's fix the junkware found by Hitman.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.

My homepage was hijacked by the TROJ_KREPPER.AE trojan which kept my hompage as www.here4search. I went to trendmicro and deleted the trojan from my system and now i have no problems with my hompage but now I am still not able to visit many sites which i had previously visited regulary before being infected with the trojan. I am running windows xp and the latest norton antivirus. If anyone has any suggestions please reply thanks.

Answer:Problems cleaning up after hijacking

Welcome to TSF.

Please post these two logs for us to review:

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it here. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates here. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to System Testing on the menu and choose Full System Scan. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies.

mr Flrman suggested to clean computer I start with New.net and did this with no problem

then suggested I run CWShredder and I did this. No problem.

Rebooted and then tried to run updates on windows but nothing will down load. jumper down loads are way to slow.

Tried to down load ADware6 and what was suggested would take 17 seconds wouldn't down load in hours.

Is there something else I can try????

Internet is working as is email with little trouble but can't down load programs now.

Major Geeks Folk -

First, Happy Holidays and a safe Happy New Year to you!

I am new to your website, and altho I'm an Army helo pilot, I have spent the past week fighting a war on my home PC with virii, adware, and malware to no success. My PC is Windows Home XP with mediacom cable modem, and I use Norton Antivirus updated frequently. Plan on switching to BidDefender (on my laptop) when the PC is cleaned up. I'm using my laptop with remote connection to avoid more problems on the main PC.

I have performed the READ ME FIRST AND RUN procedures and series of software, as well as the SpySheriff/Smitfraud/PSGuard procedure and related software. Ended up buying Spy Sweeper as it appeared to find more stuff and had to subscribe for it to clean it all out. I had also installed SpyBot and bought and installed RegRun prior to finding your most wonderful site.

I continue to have resident (or newly generating) ones, as after running all the procedures, Panda Activescan informed me I had 5 virii and 5 adware. BTW, the free scan no longer provides a remove option, and I didn't buy it. Seems whenever I reconnect the cable modem more stuff gets generated on the PC.

Can you please provide some further guidance and advice? Attached are the SpySweeper log and most recent HijackThis log.

Much appreciated, and thanks for the great website - Bob

Download L2MeFix Tool and save it where you will be able to find it.

Please print out these instructions now or save locally so that you can operate with All Browser Windows CLOSED.

Exit Browsers now before continuing

Please move the L2MeFix Tool to your Desktop and DoubleClick l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix Folder on your Desktop. DoubleClick l2mfix.bat and Type 1 and ENTER to select Option #1 for Run Find Log . Allow it as much time as it needs to run until NotePad opens with a log. Save this log. You will need to post this log back here later when you come back.

NOTE: While running option #1, if you receive an error mentioning either of the below:
- C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
- or C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and Microsoft windows applications.

Then choose close to terminate the application. Then run l2mfix.bat again and this time select option 5 or see the fixautont.html link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. Do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.Click to expand...

Next DoubleClick l2mfix.bat and type 2 and ENTER to select option #2 for Run Fix. Then, press any key to Reboot your machine.

Your computer will go crazy for a bit, but just let it run. It should eventually spit out a log in Notepad. Please also attach this log to your next message.

The problems started after my browser locked up while on the internet. I had previously used MalwareBytes and it fixed my problems, so I tried it again this time (before consulting the READ AND RUN ME post, which I found afterwards). So I ran MalwareBytes and it deleted multiple items. However, my internet explorer no longer opens and while browsing in Firefox random sites will open in new tabs and google links will go to random sites. (Also, my computer warns me that the Internet Explorer Firewall is disabled upon startup). These problems still continue after following the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure.

I apologize for having to run SUPERAntiSpyware twice. The first time took a very long time and then got locked up while scanning my external hard drive. So I re-ran it on just the external hard drive a few days later.

MalwareBytes found nothing new this time, but I will also include the old log file with the previously deleted stuff. (When I did the initial MBAM scan it asked me to reboot to complete the removal, which I did, and then it seemed to have errors after it rebooted, and I had to reboot again.)

I had no luck with ComboFix. It would get to the point where it says "scanning for infection." Usually takes 10 minutes but could easily double. I left it for an hour or more and it did nothing.

No luck with RootRepeal either. After double clicking it would say "Initializing, please wait." Then windows virtual memory would get too low and noth... Read more

I recently was hit with Antivirus Live. The second scareware attack in a month. I used the rkill and MBAM to clean out the Antivirus Live and it seemed to work well. However, there is now something quite WRONG with explorer. It will not connect to the internet. I know there is connection because MSN works fine and all connections are connected the way they should be. On opening Explorer it reads "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". So, I "diagnose" the connection problem and where is what happens:Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port 443 and FTP port 21. You might need to contact your ISP provider, or the manufacture of your firewall software.I have checked all of the settings, uninstalled, reinstalled, whined at techie friends and all to no avail. Hi

I started having problems the day before yesterday. I got bluescreens with the message:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
*nvatabus.sys - address .. ... .

Yesterday when i fired up my computer Everything was screwed. I got this message at start up saying (translated from Swedish) "One of the files in the register was restored with help from a log or an alternative version". My startmeny was gone. And i could hardly do anything.

A friend of mine recommended to try superantispyware. When trying to install I got the message "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation". I googled it and that's how I ended up here.

I've now completed (kind of) your cleaning guide with the help of my other computer as this is the first time I even can access firefox.
I did have some problems on the way though.

Superantispyware was not installed due to the above mentioned reason. I also tried the guide to enable windows installer, but that folder didn't exist. I tried to enable windowsinstaller from msconfig, but after restart it was stopped again.

Malwarebytes was also unsuccessful. I got some error message of probably old version. Downloaded the newest version, installed it with no errors BUT the installation folder was empty.

Combofix, now this is when things started to happen. Combofix passed with no errors (except that system restore was not detected, but successfully installed). After this I actual... Read more

Hey there i'm new here and its the first time I posted anything so I'm really sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I'm having a problem with my work-pc. Its always connected to the internet, and seeing that 2Gig cap usage is really unusual for a Sunday, I thought it to be Spyware uploading a lot of information. So I was recommended getting Spybot Search and Destroy, and after making a backup of the registry it scanned and fixed (deleted) all the errors, I also scaned for spyware and viruses which it removed. After I reboot the pc though, the sound was out of control, it's making a scratch sound and lagging a lot, I tried to restore the changes made to the registry but no luck, I've tried a lot of programs to repair the registry and clean it, I've tried Super antispyware, CCleaner, and AVG to Clean the whole system, and to be honest the pc never was this fast, but the sound is still crappy. Its like theres something loading in the background making it slower and causing the quality problems, like a frequency and when it gets to the peak it lags and scratches. When the sound gets like that the PC also gets slower. Also, my cursor gets funny sometimes, when two programs run, Winamp and firefox for instance, then my pointer gets stuck in the middle of the screen but you can still activate icons, know it sounds weird, for instance at the bottom of the taskbar when I want to access the icons it gets highlighted showing the mouse is over it, but the pointer is ... Answer:Sound Problems After Cleaning Registry......

Hi Chris.wellies, welcome to BC!

My first instinct would be that some program related to your system's sound is acting funny due to the registry editing. Many sound cards come with extra software that allows you to access special features on the card.

It would help to know the make and model of your PC, i.e. "HP Pavilion 2200" or "Dell Optiplex GX110".

Hello, my Dell XPS420 desktop was infected with the Vista Security 2012 rogue program. I had Norton AV installed but it somehow bypassed it. I followed the instructions here to clean the system (ran FixNCR.reg, RKill, TDSSKiller (to remove the rootkit that was causing browser redirects), and lastly, MBAM. It seemed to work. Afterwards I scanned the system with TrendMicro HouseCall, McAfee Sec Scan Plus, and Panda Cloud AV and they all indicate the system is clean. I also ran AVG PC Tune-up to clean odd ends.Interestingly, I downloaded and tried running Microsoft Security Essentials but it would not run. As I kept checking the computer I started noticing several Windows programs not running: Windows Security Center (it's not even listed under services), Windows Defender won't run, cannot turn on Printer, File or Public folder sharing or Network Discovery (the error reads "the specified service does not exist as an installed service"). I installed Comodo Firewall but one of its features, Defense+, will not run. I checked the repository (winmgmt/verifyrepository) and WMI repository is consistent. I was hoping to avoid a system re-install but I am not sure what to do next. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.(Moderator edit: thread moved to more appropriate forum. jgw)

I visited this forum for a guide to routine maintenance and cleaning of my computer. I did not have any major problems to speak of, but I wanted to go ahead and go through the "Basic Computer Maintenance" and "Vista Cleaning Procedure" because I'm not naive enough to believe that just because there aren't any noticeable problems I am not infected with malware in some way. I also thought the cleaning would help optimize performance. I made it through all the steps in the Maintenance and Cleaning threads and was feeling pretty good about cleaning up my computer; however, shortly after finishing I noticed that my Windows Security Center service has been turned off. When I try to turn this service back on I get a message saying, "The Security Service can't be started" (see: screenshot1). I tried consulting google and found several pages with some suggestions, but I just keep running into more error messages. I tried starting the Security Center through services.msc and got a combination of error messages (see: screenshot2 and screenshot3). I also tried doing a system restore from multiple different restore points, but none of them were able to complete successfully. I would appreciate any help you guys could offer me regarding this problem. As far as I know I followed all of the recommended procedures word for word - let me know if there's something I did wrong. :confused THANK YOU!!

What specific thread are you referring to what you say Maintenance and Cleaning threads. We do not have a thread with tha title in this forum. We do have a Vista Cleaning Procedure though and it is part of this thread: READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

Is this what you meant to say you ran?

Exactly what things have you done up to the point where you noticed this issue?

I had an infection of Security Tool.

I have been through the malware removal cleaning procedure, but had a few problems on the way. I'd therefore appreciate someone looking over the logs to see if everything seems clean.

I am running Vista Home Premium on an ASUS notebook F5.
Processor: AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology MK-38 2.2GHz
2GB RAM
32-bit operating system

Working through the cleaning procedure:

1. SuperAntiSpyware ran. Found 1 trojan. Log attached
2. Malwarebytes ran. Found 1 trojan. Log attached
3. ComboFix would not run. It said it could not write a file and advised a re-boot. After re-boot the same problem occured. I moved on to RootRepeal.
4. RootRepeal would not run. I tried it twice. Each time it went straight to a Blue Screen with the message:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
5. MGtools ran. Logs attached.

Should I be concerned that ComboFix and RootRepeal would not run?

Do my logs look clean?

Should I run any further scans to be sure?

Thank in advance.

Ok I am trying to help my aunt clean up her laptop. Only problems for me is it has vista which i have never used, and uses multiple accounts on it which i never use either. I went and installed spy bot and avg, and ran them on the administrator account but then it goes on to say something like this action cant be completed because you aren't the administrator. What do I do when I get this message on the administrator account?

Hi. . .

Download the program, but SAVE it to your desktop. Then right-click on it and select "Run as Administrator". The Universal Access Control (UAC) will pop-up asking for either the Top-Admin password, or it will as you to "Continue".

Hi,

I performed all the steps in the "clean your computer" tutorial post. So far, I haven't had any pop-ups (which was my original problem), but I'm still having a problem.

Edited to add: The pop-ups have returned!!!!

After I rebooted to normal mode, Norton picked-up a file called Trojan Cmapp. I got rid of that. Then I re-ran Spybot, and found that some of the files I'd deleted in safeboot had returned. The ones that originally came back are:

AbetterInternet.Aurora
Abetterinternet
CoolWWWSearch.Aboutblank
HotsearchBar
IE Plugin
PSGuard.msmsgs
ShopAtHome

Spybot deleted them, and I then ran Spybot again, this time the following files returned:

AbetterInternet.Aurora
Abetterinternet
PSGuard.msmsgs

How do I make these go away, and stay away? Thanks.

Answer:Performed all cleaning steps but still problems

Please follow the steps below:

- download Nail/Bolder/Aurora Remover 0.3.1 Beta and save it to its own folder like c:\ABIremover

- Now extract the abiremover.exe file from the ZIP file into the folder you created but do not run the EXE yet. We will run it later.

- Download SmitRem but do not run yet!

- Boot into safe mode

- Run smitRem.exe and follow the prompts. It will create a log at C:\smitfiles.txt Please attach it to your next message later when you return.

- Now while still in safe mode and run the abiremover.exe but make sure you are physically disconnected from the internet (unplug your cable to be sure). Just click install, wait (explorer window will disapear)

- When abiremover finishes just reboot into normal and continue with the below steps.

Download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.

Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster

Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
Click the X to exit the program

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant me... Read more

Not too bad ...let's do this:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Moving the topic from Hijackthislog section, as that seems to be solved now.

We got rid of the spyware or whatever was bringing internet pop ups, links and default homepage, though the process of getting rid of it has left the system with connection problems.

Norton IS and antivirus auto-protect can not activate.
Windows Update can not update, error nr. 0x80072EFD.
Launchpad of online gaming is unable to connect to the Network.
Iexplorer brings often the "could not find server or DNS entry" screen.

I scanned/repaired windows files, no error found.

I followed the suggestions on the Windows site for Windows update:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;836941 , checked everything but method nr. 5, Internet option/Tools/security/trusted sites does not let me customize the set up.

So, the system continues with the same problems, I seem able to access internet and go on irc, -by now- (have been kicked out of everything twice by now) but can not start any other application that requires connection (Norton IS, Windows Update, online game launchpad) - Network error.

Regards and thanks again for the help.

Answer:"Connection" problems after Hijack cleaning

Went and looked at your HiJack thread and you still have some problems. You need to remove all the entries in your trusted sites. Go to Start>Contol Panel>Internet options and try it from there.Go to Panda Active Scan and do the online scan. It will often pick up on viruses that other AV's miss. You may be able to solve your connection problems with LSPFix.exe. Some spyware will cause winsock problems.BTW if you EVER go on the internet with XP and no firewall, you will be re-infected within minutes. Suggest you check with your online gaming site how to accomplish this. Do they have a forum?

My Dell Inspiron 1420 (Vista SP 1) suddenly started running sluggishly after I woke it up out of hibernation yesterday. It won't open programs such as System Restore and MSWord, but it runs Firefox and CCleaner without a problem. Task Manager shows up in the tray but won't open as a window.

It also locks up when I try to shut it down, and I've had to force it manually. It boots up fine.

I've defragged recently, cleaned the registry, cleaned out temp files, run scans with SpyBot. Then I followed the instructions on the malware removal guide in this forum, and nothing seems to have changed. I wasn't able to run the SUPERAntiSpyware program (stalled on the "preparing to install" dialogue), but the other three programs seem to have worked fine. I've attached those logs here.

Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but two new processes try to run at every start-up: "apntex.exe" (which I understand to be related to the touchpad driver) and "services.exe".

Thank you for any advice you can give me!

Answer:Malware cleaning procedure attempted, still have problems

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your logs are clean. Thus you are not having malware problems. I suggest that you post in the Software Forum. I do see a very large memory dump file that indicates you had a system crash:
Code:

2009-03-14 21:54 . 2009-03-14 21:56 310,825,039 --a------ c:\windows\MEMORY.DMP

We need to cleanup from running the READ & RUN ME:

We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
"%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.

Last night I apparently ran afoul of some viruses/malware. I had a fake antivirus-scanner popup and I could not open anything on the computer. Eventually got Malwarebytes running by renaming it and reinstalling it, and got Norton running. Both found and removed TONS of virus files. But after the restart I still had the popup and couldn't open anything (firefox, etc). I couldn't update malwarebytes so I had to get a friend to send me the latest rule definition file to help update it since I couldn't connect to the internet, and then when I ran it again it found rootkits and more viruses. Then when it rebooted the popup was finally gone and I could open programs. The comp ran ok for a little while, then I decided to scan again to make sure there wasn't more, and it crashed in the middle of it, BSOD.

I ran malwarebytes again and got nothing. I downloaded and ran ad-aware and got 13 more viruses and removed them. I started up and scanned again with both adaware and norton, they found nothing. But then after i restarted because it was running slowly I got BSOD again, as soon as i tried to open outlook.

Hi Forum,
I want to clean my Satellite Pro A40 carefully inside due to overheating problems.

Does anyone can provide me with a kind of manual how to open the SPA40 properly resp. how to clean it.

I think to blow some compressed air inside will not solve the problem, there is a lot of dirt and dust inside.

Iwant to do it myself, so please don't recommand me to contact a technical specialist.

Thanxx in advance...

Answer:Cleaning Satellite Pro A40 inside due to overheating problems

Hi

> I want to do it myself, so please don't recommend me to contact a technical specialist.

In my own opinion generally it?s not a bad suggestion if some advises to contact a notebook technician for a heatsink cleaning because the disassembling of most new-generation notebooks is not easy and very tricky. Mostly the one or the other has no experience and in such cases it?s better to contact an ASP for the help as to try to clean the notebook and probably to damage some parts.
If the warranty is valid then such procedure will cancel the warranty validity

But don?t worry buddy ;) I will try to help you as far as I can?
I goggled a little bit and found this nice [instruction |http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaA45/Satellite-A45-remove-hinges-1.htm] how to disassemble the Satellite A45.
The A45 is very similar to the A40 and therefore the notebook pictures should be the same.

The step 4 (picture ) and step 5 shows the dirty heatsink and how to remove it.
You don?t need to disassemble the whole notebook but only the heatsink cover at the bottom of the unit.

Note; be always careful and don?t use the force to remove anything ;) and you know? everything what you do is at your own risk?

Hopefully I could help. Best regards and Merry Christmas ;)

Bye

My computer used to shut down and a message used to be displayed that there was a thermal event. I opened the computer, remove the screws of the fan and cleaned the thing underneath it of dust which it had a lot( and of course other parts too). after that I put the fan back but I am not sure whether I put it in original upside down position or in wrong way, anyhow the wires connecting with the fan are now in between the fan and the thing which it cools but computer still sometimes shuts down suddenly even before booting. What should I do? should I re install the windows? thanks

Answer:Desktop still having problems after cleaning interior after thermal ev

In short you are saying that you removed the heatsink over the processor, cleaned it and put it back? If it's the case, you might want to NOT start the computer until you open it back and put some thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink, or else the computer will do as you say, shut down by itself because of overheating.

My computer was infected with a TSR boot virus. I managed to clean it and get my system to boot up. I can run windows. I ran a scan with ESET and cleaned one trojan. I ran Malwarebytes and cleaned 4 threats. I think my computer is now running virus free. System: Pentium 4 2.6GHz, 512MB RAM.

However, ever since I did the FIXBOOT and FIXMBR to get rid of the TSR virus, no programs will run on my computer unless I re-install them. I cannot get Windows to update or Internet Explorer to run although I do have access to the internet (Malwarebytes and ESET are able to update). I installed those by downloading the programs with another computer and transferring them via a flash drive. When booting up, the systems says "invalid boot.ini file" but it still boots up.

When I tried that method with Internet Explorer, it won't install. I get a message that says: "The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll". I cannot get XP to update but I've managed to get onto the internet via an old install of an MSN program. Still trying to get XP to update to SP2 and 3 but not much luck there.

Anyone out there that can help?

To be sure you dont have a carry over infection..

You could try to run sfc /scannow. It may fix a corrupt or missing system file (assuming your system IS malware free)

Hi,

I was referenced to this forum after finally clearing out some pesky malware, a root-kit which appeared to be slowly taking up space on my hard drive until i had only 70mbs left. After clearing out the malware, uninstalling the anti-malware programs, and now deleting all but the most recent restore points, I'm left with about 2gbs hard drive space left. I was hoping to have someone look through my current windows and other files to see if I can further eliminate any more unnecessary or irregular files to help give me more Hard Drive space and to improve my CPU's performance.

Using the WinDirStat program I developed the following log, which is current. Please take a look and let me know any recommendations you may have.

Answer:Cleaning up my Hard Drive after Malware problems

You've focused on the wrong files.

The files in My Documents, etc...are the files that need to be either moved or removed, if the goal is to free up hard drive space on the C: partition.

Any intelligent look will verify that these files take up the greatest amount of space...and the reality is that these files are only on the C: partition because Microsoft thought it a great convenience to users when first devised. The individual files in the My Docs, My Photos, etc. can easily be moved to a different partition or stored on an external drive...and still be fully accessible to any user.

This seems to be a tough one... so you may have your jobs cut out fer ya. I found out that I got my hands on the Blebla worm. I downloaded the latest Mcafee and cleaned my system. Ever since, my Windows ME was a little funky. I was not allowed to access @ 90% of my computer. I restarted in SAFE and uninstalled the mcafee. Things seemed to be okay for a day or two, then the trouble began... now I have gotten to the point where nothing will access on WIN. I get error messages for everything I try to open... either its "...cannot find, may have typed in the wrong name...or another open program cannot find a system file" or else it says "...I may not have permission to run this program..." and that it cannot find "_.exe"
I was hoping to do a system restore, unfortunately, this is also one of the programs affected... I also have no boot disk, so that appears to not be an option. I was told to download a bootdisk, which I did... but was unaware of what to do with it, I saved it to A: but I cannot run it... as I apparently have no permission. Is there a way to open DOS prior to win start up?? I have had trouble finding a way on ME... I have a reinstall disk for my windows, and am not severely worried about losing everything on my drive, it is all replaceable... but I am unable to run it... I am more than frustrated... I just want to find a way to crash my win and reinstall it from scratch... is it possible???

Hello
Everything started before two days. I turned off my computer, so my son could not play on it and told him it's broken. Yesterday morning I turned it on and all was fine, then turned it off again in the afternoon, but by the end of the day, when trying to turn it on again, It would not boot and showed me the "blue screen of death". It had some error message, but I didn't even remembered it, because it was the first time happening on this computer and I just rebooted it, but the message appeared again. It was about some hardware problems, newly installed hardware or something like that, but I didn't gave up and rebooted it again in Safe Mode with networking, but i had the blue screen again with the same error message. Then I decided to reboot again in Safe Mode, but this time without networking and I got into the system. I then proceeded with scanning of the computer with MBAM and it found only one virus, that I removed without even noticing the name of the bug. I was confident i would handle this, because it was not the first time happening to me, but on the computer, I am writing from now. So I rebooted again and was thinking everything should be back to normal, but then came the surprise. It was not booting at all, just showed the DELL sign , than the blinking cursor on the left top side of the screen and after that nothing else-just blank screen. Black Screen (fixmbr) - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503. Since you have a Dell, I would not run this, but read Dells and Fixmbr Command - http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3524/p/19304465/19589396.aspx.

I suggest that, in the future...please write down pertinent details of any BSOD message when it first appears. Those messages are intended to provide vital clues to what is perceived as a problem.

Problems after cleaning Vista Sec. 2012

My Dell XPS420 desktop was infected with Vista Security 2012 and probably TDSS. I followed the instructions here to clean the system (ran FixNCR.reg, RKill, TDSSKiller and lastly, MBAM. It seemed to work: Malware gone and no more edirects. However, I started noticing several Windows programs not running: Windows Security Center (it's not even listed under services), Windows Defender won't run, cannot turn on Printer, File or Public folder sharing or Network Discovery (the error read "the specified service does not exist as an installed service"). I posted in BC (please see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic437820.html/page__view__findpost__p__2551744__fromsearch__1)
and was helped by Broni, who found several registry files missing. Several attempts at restoring them have been unsuccesful because of issues getting the right permissions in the system root folder. The error "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys" continues to appear (see topic 437820). Broni suggested I posted a new topic since he is now concerned that there may still be perhaps a rootkit interfering with the fix. I have followed the steps in the Prep Guide and here are the logs. A quick comment: DeFogger did not quite behave as described, it did say "Finished" but there was no "OK" button or Restart option. I clicked on the x to close it and restarted the compute... I've just acquired a second hand motherboard that needs a good clean. Apart from the usual vacuum cleaner and make-up brush routine would it be okay to give it a bath in de-mineralised water to shift the dirt?

Tom.

Answer:Cleaning a motherboard (and other components) with de-mineralised water. Problems?

Wow, it must be really dirty if you have to resort to bath it. Never heard of using DI water. DI water is not compatible w/ all metals, so if you're using it, I'd suggest drying the board quickly & completely. What about using isopropyl alcohol?

This is my fan outlet, as you can see, it has accumulated a lot of dust.

I hope that someone could help and maybe explain what does affect the computer's temperatures and how to clean this particular fan outlet. Oh, and maybe the fan itself has a lot of dust? I don't know. I have only removed the cover once, trying to clean the same fan outlet that you see (then it had much less dust in), but I couldn't figure out how, because it has some kind of cloth-like material glued to the case and I didn't wan't to rip it off, so I left it uncleaned.

After a routine Trend Micro Internet Security scan it discovered I had Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive (not C:\). So I made visible 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' in order to delete those files. But when I clicked on the System Restore directory on the affected drive I got an Access Denied warning. Even after making the drive readable I got the same warning and cannot open the directory to delete the bad files. So I did a System Restore flush then rebooted to Safe Mode to proceed with the "Malware Cleaning Guide" cleaning. The first scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware showed no vulnerabilities. Then the online scan from Panda showed the same Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive. But then the log file from the Panda scan would not save to my computer. Am currently running the online Kapersky scan and online Trend Micro Housecall then will continue with rest of "Malware Cleaning Guide". But wanted to give this early heads-up.

System Restore has the ability to be turn off for separate drives or all drives. What did you use? Also the auxiliary drive (if removable) needs to be plugged in while you do this.

Hello,

Could someone please help me clean up what has become a very slow computer? I must have too many programmes automatically starting up and running because it now takes an age to boot up and when it finally does windows take an age to load and the internet seems to run very slowly. I am posting a Hijackthis log so you can see what's running. I only really use the internet, itunes and manage photos etc. so I think there is a lot of superfluous activity which I'd love to get rid of...

My girlfriend has cut me off until I get her desktop computer up and going again! Since it went down, she won't go down. For the sake of men everywhere, could someone please assist me in cleaning this thing up?

Hi. I've been hit with SecurityTool a couple days back. So, I tried searching on google to find a solution and found one on bleepingcomputer.com suggesting running MBAM. I followed the instruction and the malware seemed to be removed from the system. However, after rebooting I got the error message right after the system restarted saying that "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close" and the sound control icon disappeared. I checked the control panel and it said I don't have any audio playback device!! Also, when I opened IE, it froze after a few clicks and a McAfee VirusScab On-Access window showing some "Buffer Overflow" error (BO:heap). So, I did a search again but couldn't find any definite answer. So, I tried updating IE from IE7 to IE8. Now the Buffer Overflow message is gone but the sound still doesn't come back. I'm not sure if this is due to malware or not, but since it started because of the malware, I think I'd ask here first. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks. I've attached the log files for SAS, MBAM, ComboFix, RR, and MGtools as instructed in R&RMF.

My company has bought 150 ThinkPad's, L420 model, with Windows 7 Pro OA installed but NO recovery DVD.The problem comes when we had to reinstall some of the laptops, because we used 4 different types of Windows 7 Pro 64bits kits (downloaded from MSDN), all of them NOT willing to accept the serial no. from the sticker under the battery. We tried to contact Lenovo Customer Support here in Romania, using the contacts we find on Lenovo.com: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/feedback/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76613. The surprise is that the phone number is NOT IN USE. So:- we got 150 paper weights for the price of 150 laptops.- we payed for Windows 7 Pro and we got almost nothing.- we trusted Lenovo to help us after sale and we were wrong. Now, my question is:Do you think we will ever buy again or advise someone to buy something from Lenovo?

Answer:ThinkPad L420 problems! Windows 7 problems! Lenovo support problems! and so on...

Hello and welcome,

When activation fails are you offered an automated phone option?

Do the recovery media sets you made when you got the machines work as they should?

How about making a set from a working machine and trying it on the failing machines.  Does that work?

I have some problems with the Lenovo software. Lenovo Account Portal does not launch Lenovo Companion and Lenovo Settings. Also, Lenovo Solution Center is missing from the Start Menu. The second problem is that some tiles are blank in Start Menu. Seemingly it's the apps that aren't Metro. I'm not sure when the problem started, but I think it was like that since I got the PC. If I right click the apps, the only option will be "Pin to Start", and with some apps: Share and Rate. Here's a picture of the problem:I did already try:Restarting the PC.Doing scannow, DISM, and scannow again.Fixing Registry errors with CCleaner.Updating BIOS and drivers. What can I do to fix the problem?

Please Read carefully, two cases in this message: Yesterday, i noticed a big issue within my notebook. I have a Y550 (P8700 cpu, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HDD, GT130M) and interestingly the battery only lasts 5 minutes before saving state of computer and turning of. I called Customer Support, because it has only been approximately one year since my purchase. The support staff (don't remember his name) told me to use Lenovo Energy Management Program to check to capacity of battery. Well, i did try that but it didn't help my case. He also told me that Lenovo gives only 6 months warranty for battery, but other components has 2 years warranty. It is totally unacceptable and false information. Because, i checked several online forums and resources and finally looked at Turkish Commercial laws and website fo industry and trade ministry. The statement is: Batteries and Recharging Tools are under two years warranty. So, Lenovo's policy is 6 months, but offical statement by Industry and Trade Ministry of Turkey is two years. I read a user's topic (he owns another company's high end laptop) and he had a very similar case like mine. After receiving a reply like mine, he applies to a court against company and company had to replace his battery under warranty, even after 6 months.  Today, i called Lenovo Turkey again, (toll free line) and a madam (her name is Saadet) responded to my call. She tried to help. However, her responses was same as the day bef... Read more

Answer:Problems with Lenovo's Policies and Lenovo Turkey Customer Support

p8700 supports vt but you need bios update which there's not any available for vt.
( you can use feedback form to inform lenovo, but it may take some time and/or they may not publish new bios update )
for replacing battery, you should contact vatan computer, let them ship your laptop back to support line.
