T410 fails to wake from sleep with 2nd Hard drive installed?

Question: T410 fails to wake from sleep with 2nd Hard drive installed?

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: T410 fails to wake from sleep with 2nd Hard drive installed?

Quick update. It wakes up eventually if you leave the machine for about 40 seconds.

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

If I'm running utorrent when I put my W7 pc to sleep, after it wakes my external hardrive will become completely unresponsive. Usb hardrive at this point will not eject properly so I have to either unplug it unsafely or reboot PC to regain control of drive. If I remember to shut off Utorrent before I put PC to sleep, PC will wake fine with ex. hardrive working fine. Anyone know a fix for this so I can avoid having to turn Utorrent off first before I put my PC to sleep?

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

I have a External Seagate 2 Tb hard drive that after a while, will disconnect and I can't wake it by trying to access the drive in Explorer. I tried rebooting my computer but it doesn't show up anymore. The only solution it seems is to disconnect the drive and plug it back in.

Any advices?

Windows 7 pro, desktop, 2 internal sata hd

Read most of the many threads on this subject. I have turned off Sleep using Control Panel, Editing the Registry, disabling hybrid computer as described in this forums tutorial.

The Start/Sleep button is not grayed out and still shuts down the computer although the automatic timed sleep mode seems to be eliminated. Moving or clicking the mouse does not wake up the computer as originally. I have to remove the power cord for a few minutes and then press the power button. I think the computer then comes back up w/o the windows sign-on window as if awakening from Sleep. Windows 7 initializtion is very slow.

Problem with Sleep arose after installing an external drive enclosure with a sata hd and using the esata interface which did not work and caused loss of 2nd internal hard drive.

I do not mind the automatic sleep mode if the computer would awaken properly.

Forgot to mention the following: Even though the Sleep recovery does not work, the computer responds to Restart and turn on from power shut down normally in its usual quick fashion.

I noticed in windows 7, when I try to resume from standby, it fails with a HDD user password set (the only one).  I set my system so I can swipe my finger to power on.  This much works.  When I press the power button, or swipe my finger when the system is in sleep, the system fans will power-on, and the HDD LED will momentarily blink, and the machine will act as if it is starting, but that fails.  The ring around the power-button continues to do its slow blink and the fans spin, but it never resumes. I've tried all the latest BIOS updates and drivers. I use an FDE HDD and it is useless without the password, so removing the password is NOT an option. Thanks.

My Dell desktop PC has been running Windows 10 since last Fall. About two weeks ago it began to have difficulty waking from sleep. Pressing the power button or a key on the keyboard causes the fan to come on and the hard drive to spin up, but the screen remains dark and in low-power mode. When I press a key the Caps Lock indicator lights up briefly.
I have to shut the PC down by a long press on the power button. When I reboot it, it starts up OK and in fact the previous set of running programs is reopened. I think this might be due to hybrid sleep: when I force a restart Windows reloads state from the hibernation file.
I've tried a couple of suggestions I found online, such as using System Restore to roll back. No improvement. Others have suggested changing the version of a device driver, such as the graphics driver, but my graphics driver is the same version it has been since installing W10.
Has anyone else noticed a change in the behaviour of sleep in the last couple of weeks? I'm wondering if this is due to some update pushed by Windows Update.
TIA for any advice.

Answer:Desktop PC fails to wake from sleep, how can I fix this?

Hi Richard,
Are you using Windows 10 1511 version ? If yes, Please try to install the latest windows update KB3140768 which brings your windows version into Windows 10 build 10586.164. So far it is fixing my issue with "sleep issue" on Microsoft Surface hardware.
No problem so far that I can see.
Hope this helps.

Hi folks. I'm having a little weird problem. This is a new system and you can see the specs in my sig. Everything is going well, and there are no problems whatsoever, except for a little weird one. Whenever the pc goes to sleep, it will not come back to life normally. I'll just have to restart it. This is what happens exactly:

Note: It doesn't happen if the PC just went to sleep, i.e. it will wake up if for example it went for sleep like a 5 seconds ago.

I come after a long day at work, and the PC will be sleeping. I'll move the mouse and the screen will come back up but only the mouse is responsive. I can only move the mouse cursor....That's all. If I press Ctrl Alt Del to enter task manager, it will bring me that page where I can choose task manager, log off, switch user...etc. And that will be it. I will not be able to do anything after that. The whole PC will freeze(after I click on task manager for example) and i will no longer be able to even move the mouse or hit Ctrl Alt Del combination to get into task manager.

I thought this might be because of my overclocking but it happened even at stock settings so it is not overclocking related. The only thing I can do is to fully disable sleep mode in both windows and BIOS(I think) to overcome this. This is just a workaround and not a solution.

Anybody have seen this before in windows 7 ? Suggestions? Comments?
Thanks.

Answer:Windows 7 fails to wake up from sleep

1: test your hdd with hd tune or hd sentinel to see it there are any communication or sector problems.
2: disable all background programs and see if the problem continues. if not start adding stuff back unit it happens again.
3: update your bios.
4: my preference, stop using sleep mode and turn it off. it can't take that long to boot?!

stand by/sleep mode has always been a PITA!!

Hello, I have 3 HDDs on my PC. Two WDC 640 GB Blacks (manufacture date June 2009) and a 1 TB Black (manufacture date November 2009). I use the 1 TB Black for storing my documents while the two 640 GB Blacks are for OS/Apps and Scratch files respectively.

The problem is when I wake up the PC from S3 sleep mode. The 2 640 GB Blacks spin up fine and I could get to the desktop but the 1 TB Black fails to start. Has anyone had issues similar to mine? Any suggestions?

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-55P-UD4PA.

Hi,

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 and I am having an issue where my computer goes into sleep mode, fails to wake from sleep, strangely resumes its state once I do a cold restart, and then after restarting again, refuses to boot.

Here is what's happening step-by-step:
Computer goes to sleep based on the time set in the Balance Power options scheme. Fine. Often, computer wakes up perfectly fine from moving the mouse or pressing a key. Fine. Very occasionally however, upon waking up the computer, the lights, keyboard lights, fans and everything else except for the display comes on. I am forced to do a cold shutdown by pressing the reset button. Upon booting up, Windows displays "Restarting Windows" rather than "Starting Windows" and resumes its state when it went to sleep. Strange but OK. Everything seems to work normally. The problems come in when I then do a shutdown or restart after it has resumed from the cold shutdown. The computer shuts down perfectly fine but during the next boot, freezes right during the animation of the windows logo and immediately restarts the computer and launches into the DOS-looking prompt asking whether I want to do a Startup Repair because the computer failed to boot.

I have tried Startup Repair from HD and from the Windows disc and neither have done anything. I am usually forced to just reformat everything and start anew. This problem recently started occurring after I installed an Intel X-25m 120GB ssd and put th... Read more

Answer:Windows fails to wake from sleep, then corrupts boot

Hi,

I just recently got hit with a similiar problem, it unfortunately resulted in a corrupted BIOS that is unrepairable, it ends up locked in a low power state. There is no one single reason why Windows fails to wake up, and it's kind of a common problem. From the research I've put into it, hardware and the version of Windows does not matter. You'll either suffer from it, or you won't. My recommendation would be to disable both your display and PC sleep settings, and stick to manually shutting down and a screensaver to completely avoid it before any possible hardware damage is inflicted, and until there is more information available on it. The CPU, mobo and PSU are the most likely to become damaged.

If you still wish to use Sleep, make sure all your drivers are up to date, along with Windows, might make a small difference.

If you have another system available to you, or are able to borrow a mates, go ahead and use it to test your hardware for faults incase your situation is hardware based, and not failed coding on Microsoft's part. Also on that note, try removing your SSD for a week or two (or however long it usually takes before your system decides to sleep in) and see if it solves it, and post back with results.

I would still keep an eye on here, no less, incase a solution comes to light. Go ahead and do some Google searches on the issue, the plethora of possible fixes people have tried may work for you.

If possible, can you recall anything else you have ... Read more

For years I have had dual monitors working fine in my Win 7 machine. Then a few months ago I started having problems when the computer turn on or wakes from sleep mode. The primary monitor turns on then switches off after a second. The only remedy is to
turn off the monitor, turn on, and repeat until finally the monitor stays awake.

I have tried shutting down the computer and starting using the system restore disk - the monitor does not come on.
I tried installing a replacement video card (and turning off the motherboard video support) the problem is the same. This indicates it is not the video driver or physical video chip.

but not after a short period?

Hello to all

I have set up a windows 7 x64 machine as a file server for my htpc in the lounge.
Now to save pennies i have set it to sleep at night and then wake in the mornings so its up and ready for the music and movies to be present for the htpc.

Now if i manually run the scheduled task to set the machine to sleep and set the wake schedule for ten minutes later, it wakes fine. But if i run the schedule as it should at night, the system never wakes in the morning and neither will the mouse let me? i have to press the power button for it to come back to life like its hibernating. But i have disabled hibernate using the following link.

I have a step by step guide as to what i have done in regards to both sleep and wake schedule here.

Any advice would be greatly received and tested asap, also when the kids have has their showers and in bed i will provide specs of that system if its going to help.

Hi there,

I am running a Windows 7 64-bit setup, and I'm trying to get a timer to wake Windows from sleep or hibernation.

I've got it to work flawlessly on my desktop, however on my laptop, a Dell D630, I can't seem to get it to work. I've created a task triggering on a specific time and running the operation '/c "exit"', which should just start a command prompt and close it again. I've set it to "run with highest privileges" and "wake the computer to run this task". However, it just doesn't boot as scheduled.

The history of the scheduler says nothing at the moment that the trigger is set to go off, but a minut later (probably when I manually boot) I get a "Task scheduler "{....}" instance of the task "\Wakeup" due to a time trigger condition."

What can I do to fix this?

Thank you.

Answer:Scheduler fails while trying to wake Windows from sleep/hibernation.

Hello and welcome to Seven Forums.

Some things you can try for testing:

Turn off "run with highest privileges" - you shouldn't need it for this task

Try different setting combinations for:
"Run whether user is logged on or not" / "Run only when user is logged on"
"Start the task only if the computer is an AC power"
"Stop if the computer switches to battery power"

Compare each page in the Task settings between the Desktop and Laptop.
See if you can find some different setting(s) that might cause this.

If you logon with a Standard account when the computer sleeps, try using an Admin account.

Hope this helps,
David

Hi all,

just bought a new Portege M800 running Vista.

When the system goes into sleepmode or hibernation, there isn't any posisbility to wake the system up. I have to remove the battery to start up again.

Downloaded and installed the latest BIOS, did all Vista updates. Also checked the BIOS, wake on LAN and wake on keyboard are enabled
Anyone else with this problem?

Meanwhile, I disabled hiernation and sleepmode in Vista, but this shouldn't be the way to do it.

Any advice much appreciated
Cheers
Dave

Answer:Portege M800 - Sleep mode and wake up fails

Hello

I?m not a Portege M800 owner but normally I would suggest that you should try to update the BIOS and install all Windows updates but you have already dont it.

What you can do now? If you have installed your own Windows version try it with ?factory settings?. Maybe it has something to do with the software or so? I?m not sure.

If it doesn?t work I think you will need professional help from an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and exchange faulty hardware parts if it?s necessary.

Starting with BIOS 1.61, Twist will fail to wake up after sleeping for approx 3 hours.  After sleeping for 3 hours, the system will enter a "deep sleep" state that Lenovo calls 30-Day Standby.  Due to a BIOS bug, the system is not able to wake from this state.  After trying to wake for 2 minutes (while the red LED flashes), eventually it will fail and the system will reboot.

To work-around this issue, please run Lenovo Settings from the Win8 start screen.  Then click on Power, and choose the option to disable 30-day Standby

Hello,

I recently custom built a new Windows 7 HTPC. Ever since I first completed the build, I would get a BSOD every time the computer wakes up after going to sleep. The only ways to avoid the BSOD would be to not let the computer go to sleep (obviously) or to remove the card installed in the PCI Express slot. I currently have a Ceton InfiniTV4 card installed. If I remove the Ceton InfiniTV4 card, then the computer will sleep without issue. I used the same Ceton InfiniTV4 card in a previous Windows 7 build without issue.

When I contacted Ceton support and provided dumps, they advised "Our software engineers have analyzed the memory dumps you provided and it appears that the BSOD is being caused by a windows process called csrss.exe crashing. We would recommend checking on the Microsoft support forums to see if anyone else is having this issue. We would also recommend running a memory test (Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic ) on your RAM to make sure there are no inconsistencies."

I ran a memory test, which found no errors. I tried removing the Ceton InfiniTV4 card and confirmed that the computer can sleep without crashing if nothing is installed in the PCIe slot. I also tried installing a different card - a Rosewill 2-port USB 3.0 SuperSpeed PCIe card (RC-505) - in the PCIe slot. I was able to recreate the BSOD on wake with the Rosewill card installed, so it seems the problem is somehow related to the PCIe slot itself and not necessarily the actual... Read more

I have a T430 that I purchased in August 2013. It is "fully loaded," and includes both the main battery as well as the additional battery "slice." With both batteries installed, after the first battery is run down (the "slice" is run down first), the T430 switches to the other battery (the main battery). If I then suspend the computer, it appears that it tries to maintain the memory during sleep mode using the depleted battery which, of course, results in the same thing as removing the battery while in sleep. When I press the power button to resume, I instead get a cold boot, with a warning sign about Windows 7 (Pro, 64-bit) not having shut down properly. I've tried to figure out how to contact Lenovo but, despite having an extended support contract, I have been unable to do so. I'm hoping someone here can help or can direct me to where I can find out how to contact Lenovo about what is obviously a flaw in their design.

I have 4 Internal HDDs installed, 3 are SATA and 1 IDE, Whenever I wake my PC from a hybrid sleep the IDE drive no longer responds (slave drive) It causes explorer to freeze for awhile as it tries to access and the HD light stays lit until I reboot the PC.

Also Im unable to shutdown properly or reboot when this happens, I have to do a hard reset or hold the power button. (attempting to do a normal restart / shutdown always gets stuck at "logging off").

I never use to have this problem before, it seems to of started after I enabled Intel AHCI in my bios recently, but I didnt think this would effect an IDE drive? The drive works fine before the PC goes to sleep and no SMART errors are reported in HD Tune etc.

Any ideas appreciated.

Answer:One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

If you used the intel controller to set it to AHCI mode - did you install this driver from the gigaybyte site it will update the AHCI driver and should provide correct functionality- Intel SATA RAID Driver - 10.5.0.1015 - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.6) i think its the latest version or equivalent version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver which is needed even when you dont have raid enabled. Note Im not 100% sure here as i have no gigabyte board and i cant unpack the driver to check it.

You could also update to the latest driver for your video card - long shot fix.

Otherwise Switch back to ide mode - AHCI is only usefull for hot swapping hard drives - if you have no need there is no speed difference as most modern hard drives have this enabled automatically. W7 should find the original driver upon rebooting if you just reset from AHCI to IDE mode in the bios.

If you used the microsoft fix, to be sure of success, follow this path in the registry : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci - then right click start - modify and change from 0 to 3 - then go to bios and reset back to IDE mode and reboot.

I'm new to sevenforums and would appreciate the help of some of you. I have updated my user profile with all of the details and specs of my system that is having my issue.

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up.

It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.

I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).

I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down. I have been messing with this issue for a few days now and am asking for some help from the community here at sevenforums. If you need any additional info let me know.

Thanks.

Answer:Wake on Ring problem - Fax modem fails to wake PC reliably from standby

I may not be able to help, but I am curious - is this a dedicated telephone line?

If not, what services do you use, like call forward, messaging, call waiting, etc.

Or does the dedicated line have anything like that that you know of? (or didn't know of)

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version 7.67.0.50. In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

Answer:Trouble with Wake on Ring, Wake on LAN and Standby - Sleep - Suspend

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

When I put my computer in sleep mode, it won't 'wake up'. I have to manually turn off the computer and then start it up again. This has happened twice. I have a T410 with Win7 Pro and spinner hard drive and need to do a full disk encryption. To do Bitlocker I would need to upgrade to Win7 Ultimate (very hard to find now) or Win8.1 Pro or Win10 (?) But I'm wondering if anyone has successfully installed a Self Encrypting Drive - SSD would be good? Which hard drive works (or didn't work)?Did it work to clone from the current drive?Or does it work to build a recovery image, swap drives, then restore from the image? Is the process already written up somewhere that I haven't found yet? Or is this all a very bad idea? Thanks!TimC

Answer:T410 with self encrypting hard drive

I got it working, but in researching, I did not find that the self-encrypting drive was shown to be a practical, really good idea. There was an article stating that the SEDs were potentially easily cracked. That might change, but I needed to get this done now. Just in case someone wants to know what worked for me ...First I backed up a system image of the spinner hard drive. Just in case. Then I cloned the spinner to an Intel SSD using the provided Intel/Acronis software. Then I swapped the drives (it's so nice that the hard drive is easily accessible.)Then I upgraded from Win7 Pro to Win8.1 Pro using the Installation DVD.Installed Windows Updates.Ran Bitlocker, saving the encryption key to a USB drive which I will backup and save forever. The related thread is:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T410-upgrade-Windows-7-to-Windows-8-1/m-... Cheers,TimC

There are ultra bay adapters for the T410, as well as many other T-series laptops so you can install a 2nd hard drive in place of the CD or DVD drive.  I have the adapter and drive but for some reason the computer doesn't recognize the drive in the bay.  You can hear the drive attempt to power on and spin but after it boots there isn't any sign of the drive.  Are there some steps I'm missing, something I need to change?   I just updated to a 240GB SSD, so the 2nd drive is the OEM 250GB HDD it does still have the OS installed, which would be wiped if I could just get the drive to load so I could format it and use it as a storage drive.  I'm running Windows 10 64bit.

I just purchased a T410 running Windows 7 and want to be able to boot to a hard drive installed in the Ultrabay. I have a hard drive that was configured for a Dell D620 running Windows XP. I have installed this hard drive in the Ultrabay. When I boot the T410 I press F12 to select my boot drive. It recognizes the hard drive in the Ultrabay, but the screen just goes blank and won't boot. If I let the computer boot normally, I can see all the files on the hard drive in the Ultrabay. Am I just missing drivers on the hard drive from the D620? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer:Second Hard Drive Bay Adapter 62P4553 for T410

the hdd adapter used in the T61 is not compatible with the T410 one, regardless of whether it is for the sata hdd or the pata hdd. Also, the 62P4553 is for PATA hdd.The T410 uses a SATA ultrabay connector, while the T61 uses PATA ultrabay connector. Those T61 hdd adapter that allows you to install a SATA hdd have a SATA to PATA bridge chip.So the answer is that you have to get a new hdd adapter.

I have a Thinkpad t410 and I recently purchased a larger Hard Drive and installed it a week ago . Installation went fine, windows installed perfectly, and everything seemed fine until yesterday when I rebooted and the system hung on the lenovo bios boot screen (lenovo logo and the 'Press the blue ThinkVantage button to interrupt startup) because the hard drive was not spinning.  After restating a few times, the hard drive came up and boot went on as normal.  Since then, this has happened every time I have turned off my system, and a few hours ago has started when I wake the system from standby.  I initial thought was that it was a bad hard drive, but when I put the hard drive in a different laptop, it functioned perfectly.  This does not occur if I restart the computer, only if I shut it down so the hard drive stops spinning and needs to turn back on.   Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer:t410 - using the Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III

I bought mine off ebay from hongkong for about £15. It's not genuine but works well.  I've got WD Scorpio black 320Gb in there which is 7200 and 9mm thick ( I guess )  Do not know if shock protection is included within ultrabay adapter as I use as a desktop replacement. The only problem with my HD in the ultrabay is noise - WD Scorpio Black are quite noisy and vibrate a lot (7200). I suppose if you would use 5400 with higher capacity that would be a nice setup.

I recently used my system image disk to restore on a new (larger) hard drive but now when I look at the hard drive from the computer view it shows my hard drive as being the same size as the old one instead of being the size of the new one. I'm not sure
I'm making much sense so I will post a picture...

Is there anyway to fix this? Does the drive really only have 286 gigs on it?

Answer:System Image disks installed on new hard drive show new hard drive same size as old one

You have to be logged in as Admin to perform these operations.
Go to Start, and in the Search box, type in DISK MANAGEMENT. Pick the Control Panel item "Create and format disk partitions." Once Disk Management comes up, right-click on the area of your disk and select "Extend volume..." Move it out
as far as you want, making the whole thing one drive.
If that doesn't work for you, then you can download Easeus Partition Manager Home
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm  and create a boot CD from it that will accomplish the same thing (and more, if you want to read up on it). It's a free program and works
with 32- and 64-bit Windows. I like it and use it myself.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T410 Hard Drive Error

There are one or maybe two things depending on the state of the files. If you're able to Image the drive to a file or clone it. (Trueimage is my tool of choice) Copy all you data EG everything in MyDocuments and email files EG *.PST You need a new hard drive. The image will save you a lot of time and most or everything should work on the new drive. If you don't have the DVD's created for the Windows OS, it may be late now to attempt that since it takes quite a while to create and is disk intensive. Not the job for a failed HD.

What kind of hard drive and hard drive caddy would I need for a Lenovo Thinkpad 410? Where is a good place to get a caddy, and about how much do they cost? I was looking to buy a T410 on eBay, and I see a lot of them don't include a hard drive.      I don't know much about laptops in general.     I saw 2.5" laptop hard drives for sale on eBay and at newegg.    Will any of them work?

Any of those Lenovo T caddies on ebay will work.  I think the going rate shipped is $9 or less.  As for hdd, pick the capacity you need using Newegg, Amazon or TigerDirect.  Just make sure it's 9.5mm or less.  Occasionally a nice 1TB spinning at 7200rpm with 32 or 64mb cache goes on sale for <$70.  I think last week the HGST was $58

I'm not sure if this has been discussed previously, but I am having a horrible time getting the WOL functionality to work on the 410s. It works sometimes, but it's spotty at best, and I cannot find any information with anyone having this much trouble getting it to work. We store them in a cart most of the time, and I want to be able to push out updates to them while they are in the cart. Is anyone else having this same issue? Or does anyone have any advice on how to get these to start waking up more regularly? I think part of the problem is the nic is getting turned off when the AC is unplugged. I was just given a used Thinkpad T410 that was cleaned and reset. I made recovery disks and then reclaimed the space from the recovery partition. Even with doing that I only have about 48gb of free memory on a 147gb hard drive. I've only loaded about 2gb of programs and the only other thing on it is the windows 7 operating system, which I believe is somewhere near 30gb. I'm guessing a backup or something is hidden on the drive. I really won't to reclaim as much drive space as I can, how can I find and delete any old unneeded hidden files?

I am new in this Forum. I am a ThinkPad Fan. I brought ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (40Y8725) to fit my T60 2613HBU. It works well. One week ago I ordered another Thinkpad T410 (2615CTO). Now I am still waiting for my shipment. I just want to know, whether my existing Storage Adaptor (40Y8725) could fit T410? If yes, I could use my existing Storage Adaptor (with SATA Hard disk) on my new T410 and that will be Great.

Answer:Whether ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter (40Y8725) could fit T410?

I have a Western Digital 7gig hard drive installed as the second drive. Frequently it will not be found when the computer boots. About the other half of the time, all works normally.

The problem first becomes apparent when the BIOS looks for the drives. It will hesitate for a LONG time, then find the first drive, and not find the second drive. If this happens, the drive activity light will stay steadily lit for as long as the computer is turned on - no blinking, always on.

Can anyone advise me, or give me a good guess, whether the problem is likely the drive, power to the drive, or the IDE controller?

Thanks!

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

Hello, I was wondering about an issue that I've been having... sometimes when the computer wakes up from standby (on battery power only) the screen colors become very washed out, but eventually fade back to normal. Is this a normal occurrence with the T410 screen, or is it something that I should be concerned about? Otherwise, the T410 seems to be a very solid computer.

Hello, I have a permanent problem with losing WiFi connection after wake up (from hibernation and suspend). The access connection manager looses connection and cannot connect automatically (although the setting is set so). I have to connect manually every time and mostly even three times before it finally connects. The manager says either "driver was disconnected" or "operation was cancelled". Is there any workaround, please? It's horrible to wait minute or two before I can use WiFi after the full wake up. In linux everything works fine Teddy

Answer:lost connection after wake up (T410)

hey teddy_the_bear,curious to know, when your unit was a mono-boot; did it have the same problem or did the problem start after installing linux ?

Answer:T410 - Win7 - Lenovo Portable Hard Drive 160GB Not recognized

hey GUTGUT,as the portable did work on your previous T61, i would like to know when it is plugged into your T410, was there any light on the portable to indicate that it is being read?was there any prompt on the screen indicating a new hardware was found ? Try uninstalling the USB drivers for your unit (make sure no devices are connected). windows should then install its generic drivers.once generic drivers has been installed, connect your portable and see if it gets detected. do try the portable on a different unit as well.

Hi (first post) On booting my PC this morning, I got error 2100: HDDo (Hard disk drive) initializatio error (2) It does not find my hard disk at all. The laptop has been working fine for the past few months - and had a new hard disk installed 3 months ago as the old got the blue 'screen of death'. So far I have tried the following: 1. Rebooted/on/off several times2. Removed the hard drive from the slot and put back i3. Dowloaded the bootable-generator.exe via my old Thinkpad T41 - although I am not sure what to do with it now it is on a USB stick - do I switch the boot sequence in the BIOS Startup so - or something?  I can't believe the hard disk has 'died' as all was working perfectly well the night before. Do you have any suggestions as to what to do? It seems very odd! Many thanks, D

Answer:Thinkpad T410 Error 2100 Hard disk drive - just 3 months old?

the platters could be stuck internally and not spinning up. But the question is if you have data you need to get off. If not get it replaced.Getting it to spin up you could take it out and give it a shake laterally and put it back in and see if it spins up. You should be able to hear it spining. If it does and you still can see it then its likely a HD controller failure.

I have an issue with the sleep function. The computer does not awake from sleep. When I try to do it, it behaves as if it was waking, but it never ends and there is only a black screen; the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. The only thing possible to do is a hard reboot. When it boots, it shows a notice with a minute report (in the zip file) usually saying there was a blue screen, but I NEVER see any blue screen at all.

I know the power configuration is OK because I have always used the same scheme. A powercfg ?energy report shows several errors and warnings. They refer to USB and PCI (vendor 1002=ATI motherboard), but I don?t know how to repair them.

I downloaded the drivers downloader from Rrecipester.org and downloaded and installed the drivers. They are all Broadcom Corporation signed, the brand of my USB Bluetoth attachment. I rebooted after installing, as recommended. Run powercfg ?energy again and got the same report issues (in the zip file). I don?t think the processor utilization warnings to be very important because they are low and sporadic picks. It has been like this for some time now, so I don?t have a restore point. Can someone help and tell me what I can do so solve this issue, please?

Files uploaded in the attached zip:
. Windows warning after reboot
. Windows dump and xml files (2 = 1 each)
. Powercfg -energy report
I wanted to correct the thread title, but was unable to do it. Maybe someone else can do it.

Answer:No Wake From Sleep – BlockedI have an issue with the sleep function. T

Quite confident it's a driver issue, it will be very difficult to troubleshoot from the one included dump file though as it's incomplete and inconclusive.

to boot up. Here's my issue I have a HP Desk top w/ a standard 320 GB hard Drive. I bought a new Hard drive (1 TB Western Digital) so that I could move everything to the new one and use the old one as storage. I had trouble even formatting the new drive but eventually got it and successfully installed a full version of Win 7. (the old hard drive has Win Vista with Win 7 upgrade on it. When I boot up the computer I receive a message asking which WIN 7 i want to use and actually either one works. I wanted to format my old drive so that I would only have one Operating system w/ WIN 7 installed.

I tried to format it (the old drive) at the command prompt, but alas it wouldn't let me. So, I said the hell with it and opened the case and disconnected the power cord first and then I unplugged the SATA cable as well as the power cable to the hard drive. I tried to re-start the computer but now it says cannot find something, unable to read or error. So, I take it something is missing from the new WIN 7 install to my new hard drive? WOuld luv a simple fix explanation from someone waay more knowledgeable than myself. Thanks in Advance!

R/ Dave

Answer:How do I get my newly installed Hard Drive (1TB) with Win 7 installed

Did you by any chance have both drives connected when you reinstalled? If so, your boot files may be on the 320 gig drive.

Try running a startup repair--you may have to run it 3 times.

I had a regular install of Windows 7 on a WD 1 TB drive with the usual C:\ as the boot drive.

I just got a new SSD, so I set up a parallel or dual boot of Windows 7 on the SSD which is set up as the B: drive.

So when I boot into the Windows on the SSD (B:\) and run the WEI, it fails because it can't write a file to the drive.

Any suggestions? - I don't want to start changing the drive numbers as that will mess up my file associations. I tried editing the xml files under the Performance directory, but still can't get it to work.

Answer:WEI fails (cannot write file to hard drive) Boot drive set to B:\

Generally B: is not assigned to a hard drive, but can be used for a volume. I don't know if this is the reason you are having problems. I'd think modern BIOS might not have an issue with this, but older BIOS always assumed A: and B: were floppy drives. A Guy

This computer Vaio running Vista suddenly failed to recognize the DVD drive. When you push the button the light lights but door will not open. Also, under computer the drive is not listed.

When you plug in the external hard drive, the computer sees the drive, loads the driver and in the device manager shows it is working properly but has a exclamation mark next to the name. However, when you look in computer the drive is not listed.

The C drive along with a USB stick work fine.

The computer has been cleaned using AVG and Superspyware. Also, various other aspects have been checked using Advanced System Care. The C drive is 90% full.

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I guess no one has a clue.

It also will not recognized an external DVD player/writer. BTW, all of these were easily seen on another computer and worked fine.

Answer:Computer fails to see dvd drive and external hard drive.

Josh, you have been warned. Do not double/triple post. Someone will post if they know the problem. If no one has posted in 24 hours, you may double post, not 2 hours later.

(if that is not correct, will a mod please correct me? I'm not sure what the rules are on that)

Is this PATA or SATA? did you check that the connection is firm? your DVD-rom is seperate from your HDD.

Hi all, I have this strange issue with my new T410 notebook which has secondary HDD attached via Ultrabay adapter.I am running windows XP (SP3), and have set password on both primary and the secondary disk drives (via BIOS). The initial booting works fine, presenting me two password prompts for both disks. However, when I go into the standby mode, and come back again, I see my SSD as a local disk D, butthe drive does not seem to be mounted (?) properly. It seems that the notebook tries to eject(?) the diskwhen it undergoes to standby mode, but unable to re-mount the disk back again. One thing that estranges me is that I once used T410 with Samsung SSD and this problem didn't happen. When Iswitched to Intel SSD, this problem started to occur... I am suspecting that the problem is related to intel SSD (mymodel no is SSDSA2M160G2LE), but don't know for sure. Does anyone have similar experience ?

Answer:T410 problem with Intel SSD on Ultrabay not remounting after wake-up from standby.

By the way, I have also tested this without the hard disk password applied, and the same problem persists, so this definitely has nothing to do with the BIOS password.

Is there a way to allow the T410 system to wake up by moving or clicking a USB mouse that is connected through a docking station? I am aware of the power settings available from device manager that allow a USB device to be used to wake up a system. However the problem is that the Docking Station USB ports lose connectivity with the T410 when it goes to sleep. Any fix or update from Lenovo to bypass this? The T410 is running Windows 7 Corporate 32 bit. and it is docked on a 4337 model mini dock. BIOS, Power Manager Drivers and Utility have been updated to the latest versions advertised by Lenovo in the Driver Matrix. Need a way to wake up T410 by USB devices attached to Docking Station.

Answer:T410 wake up via USB mouse / Keyboard connected through docking station.

There is no way to do this (wake up PC when docked with an external keyboard or mouse, as was possible with previous ThinkPads).  It is a feature that has been deemed unnecessary and removed from recent ThinkPad docks.  Please see the following document. http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht077684

On "K" it's " 'K " On backspace it's deleting and then typing a "+" so i cant really use this notebook atm Looks more like a hardware error cause i get this error in windows and linux

Answer:t410 keyboard fails

Hi jinn,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with Keyboard on your ThinkPad T410.

Please check with uninstalling the keyboard adapter from the device manager and check with restart the system.
Check if the external keyboard works fine.
Check cleaning the keyboard from vacuum cleaner, also check if there is any foreign partial stuck in the keyboard.
If the issue still persists on the system keyboard, then the issue might be with hardware.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

My T410 is a 2537-D99 machine with Intel HD Graphics, Hard Disk=320Gb and RAM=8Gb . Standby (suspend and resume) used to work like a charm untile 1 month ago (more or less). But now it fails. When suspend/standby actions is launched (pressing Fn+F4 or lid  or from OS) the secuence is initiated, power button starts to blink, hard disk activity led is off, wifi led is off, standby moon led is on, but fan remains working. In this situation the only way is to power off the machine holding down the power button for a while, because is not able to resume/awake. It seems the same problem mentioned in: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Thinkpad-T410-510-W510-W701-X201-models-may... This issue happens with Windows XP and LINUX. Except by this problem with standby/suspend everything works perfectly. In deed the laptop is able to hibernate (in XP and LINUX) although it can't  shutdown the machine after write in the hibernation file or partition. But, after forced shutdown and new boot, the restore process is successfully completed. I've upgrade the bios and Intel AMT 6.2 Managemente Engine Firmware to 6.2.30.1040 without success. Deactivating Security Chip, Intel AMT, and other bios options have no effect, the problem remains. In LINUX the laptop is not able to shutdown completely (the laptop's display remains brighting despite the fan, hard disk, and leds seems to be off). This is similar to this problem: http://forums... Read more

Answer:T410 fails to standby

This sometimes happens to my T500 and sometimes it doesn't wake from sleep but I haven't had that happen in a while. My best guess would to be hard shutdown fire up safe mode and reboot in regular mode and try again

About a year ago couple bought an HP Midi Tower PC from a well known store really cheap because it had been a display machine, and it has Windows 8 installed. The computer recently started malfunctioning and so they asked us to take a look. First thing we noticed was that there was no PID label on the side, but have since learned that is no longer used for Win 8 machines. They have no disk(s) either, just the machine, but there is a recovery partition on the HDD, from which I was able to 'refresh' the system before giving it back. This was a temp solution, aimed at them getting their personal stuff off, because the hard drive is failing, and indeed the machine stopped working again just a few days after we returned it.
My question is, after putting a new drive in, given that the machine already has the PID hash in the BIOS, is there a way I can get the system back on without them having to buy another copy of Windows 8? OR could they legally put a copy of a different version of Windows on the machine instead ( which is the preferred option), and get that accepted, given that the original for Windows 8 is still in the BIOS, ie, could they override the original PID with one for the new OS??? Please advise.

Answer:Options available when hard drive fails

If you have an installation media (CD/USB) with the same version as the OEM from HP then you can do a fresh install and Windows will automatically activated with the built in PID.

If you are currently running Windows 8 and say you install Windows 8 Pro then you have to buy a new Key for the Pro version.

I have an external HD caddy and a 200GB IDE hard drive. Not the hard drive is a used one, I replaced it when I upgrade my PC last year and was hoping to use it as a secondary/backup drive. So anyhow plugged caddy into my PC, went to format the hard drive, a quick format failed, a full format failed so i deleted the partition and recreated another. Tried quick format, it failed again this time a full format ran but when it had finished and I tried to drag some filed onto it I was told that the drive needed to be formatted.

Any ideas?

Found my old Dell Vostro laptop, which was not in use for about 4 years. Made some cleaning, checked connectors, changed thermal paste...HDD failed to boot and BIOS was unable to recognize it. Everything else passed internal tests and seem to work just fine. Then HDD booted (I did nothing, it just happened). But now I'm afraid to start laptop and run HDDScan: if it is some mechanical problem, next failure can be devastating. So, basically, what may it be? Can you approximate risk of major damage if I just boot and try to go through scan? Or should I just go and buy new HDD?

Answer:hard drive fails then works again

Replace it...

I have a 120gig Western Digital Hard drive that I removed from my previous computer to use in my new computer as a second hard drive. The hard drive I have installed currently is a Maxtor SATA 250gig. The western digital is an IDE hard drive that is plugged in on the master part of its own seperate IDE cord. Everything boots up just fine, the problem begins when I double click on the new drive under my computer it informs me it needs to be formated, which I can attempt to do. I begin the formatting and after about 2 minutes it tells me that windows is unable to complete the operation, and then the hard drive fades from my computer and won't show up unless I reboot the system.

Any help would be appreciated.

On of my hard drives is about to fail and as the end draws near I think its now time to sort it out.
Budget ?0.00
I have: 1 spare hard drive but no free slots.
My Problem:
My hard drive has Photos, music and Videos on it so it is very important.
Is there a way of saving the image on another hard drive that is in use swapping the old for new then re-writing the image for free? Or would it just be easier to copy the data to another location and swap it back again?
I think that the hard drive in question for some reason has information on it to boot the computer up so I will also need a way to check that as well?

Hi all, I originally posted a message about how my T410 win 7 machine (Intel Core i7) would not wake up properly from sleep mode (did not really enter sleep mode either) The only new thing I did was the fix for the sleep/hibernation problem that was offered here which did not work and progressed within 24 hours into not waking from hibernation and not truly shutting down.  What I mean by that is that Win would shut down and it all seemed out except the fan keeps running and the first time it happened, I didn't realize and the laptop  overheated. I turned it on and within 3 or 4 minutes it was cool again. When it runs there is no indication anything is wrong. I ran all diagnostics, etc., etc. A member here suggested motherboard might be a problem. Is there anything else that could be going on? Should I try to reload Win or do a full recovery, reformat the drive, etc.? I ask because the machine is a year old and I'd hate to chuck it since it still runs, seems fine when running, etc. (And I don't feel like buying a new one now either nor investing almost as much into replacing the motherboard) Pretty desperate here... thanks.mantic

Answer:T410 fails to shut down; overheats

I've just been struggling with a very similar issue with the Mrs' U110.  It seems to be the AV/security software causing the problem.

I've updated the AV (the program, not just the virus definitions) and so far it's OK.  If it isn't fixed, I'll try another vendor's AV before digging into other stuff.

This kind of thing - shutdown/sleep/hibernation problems, especially when they are "heisenbugs" - can sometimes/often be caused by security software.

My Dell 1525 W7 laptop had begun to experience more and more frequent hard drive errors. So, in an effort to fend off total disaster, I purchased a new hard drive. The new drive was slightly larger than the old one (250GB vs 160GB). With a week old backup in hand, I used Acronis to do a disk CLONE to the new drive in an external enclosure. I was able to do it without any apparent drive errors. I then swapped drive for drive and rebooted. My most frequent apps worked fine, network access was fine, etc. Then I went to do a Windows Update - not fine. The little shield in the upper left corner of the box was red and, when I clicked on the "Check for Updates" box, it replied Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I went to Services, started the service, marked it Automatic, and tried again - no joy. So, as it suggested, I rebooted. No joy again. After trying a couple of different backup versions with the same result. I went back to square one and used the original W7 install disk. The install went fine and I was able to use Windows Update successfully. I hoped that having verified that a vanilla W7 worked, I might be lucky enough to just be able to restore my latest backup. Wrong. The system appears to work fine with the only KNOWN problem being Update - there may be other problems, as yet unknown. Differences I am aware of: new hardware partitions proportionally larg... Read more

I had the above msg last week. I rebooted and got as far as the XP User sign on screen before I heard the dreaded 'clicking' noise from the hard disk and system froze.I rebooted using my recovery CD, Windows setup (blue screen) started and some files were copied/loaded before the clicking started again and system froze. My assumption was that the disk is knackered and so I purchased a replacement. Original was a WD1000JB Caviar just 3 year old and replacement is WD1600JB Caviar.I've installed the new disk and set jumpers to cable select. My question is whether it is best to also install the old disk, again with cable select but daisy chained off the ribbon cable for new disk, and then use my recovery CD or merely forget the old disk altogether. It would be useful if I could retrieve some of the recent unbackedup data but don't want to cause more problems by installing a duff disk.Advice gatefully received.Machine is 3 yrs old, Evesham AMD1600+ with 512 memory.John

Really long thread but please read it and help.

Today i got sick of my hard drive always uselessly disappearing and thought i'd rather lose 150gbs of data then have it become useless all the time. I tried to fix my disappearing in this thread but had no success. After all that i tried formatting it. It said it was formatting for a couple of minutes then stopped and it froze up so i had to exit it. The usual blue bar that appears under storage devices and tells you how much memory it has left disappeared and i tried to double click it then it froze explorer, leading to me terminating and restarting it and when i restarted it disappeared.

When I restart my computer, sometimes it shows up and sometimes it doesnt, but it always shows up in my bios. I tried booting from windows 7 install disk and installing windows 7 directly to the disk but it couldn't see the disk. When i right click it and go into it's properties while it's invisible, it says file format is raw.

When my hard drive visible, i try to format it with cmd or with right click but it always fails and disappears after failure. When it isn't visible, the only thing that can detect it that i know of is diskpart in cmd. It doesnt even show up in device manager. With diskpart, i tried selecting it as a disk and cleaning it but it fails and says ' DiskPart has encountered an error: The system cannot find the file specified. See the System Event Log for more information.' When i select it as a volume and try to format i... Read more

Answer:Raw Hard drive. Format and diskpart fails.

Before you can format a raw hard drive you must create a partition on it first.

Go to Start>Control Panel>System & Security>Admin Tools>Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions.

Select the raw drive/partition then right-click and choose Delete Volume.

Right-click it again and create a new partition, allocate a drive letter and choose the Quick Format option.

I gave someone a 233 Mhz pc I set up with Windows me. They used it for a while and had it on the internet. They gave it back and asked me to fix it. They said they had a cluster error on the hard drive and windows wouldn't start up and scandisk would stop after a certain percentage. I ran a western digital diagnostic on it and it says error 0208, smart status failed after media scan, replace drive. I put another western digital hard drive in it and I believe I heard a noise when I turned it on but I'm not sure. When I tried to do a format on the drive, it started saying, trying to recover allocation units and did that for a while then said format failed. It was broken now too.

Is there a virus that will do this to hard drives like this? If there is a specific part of the other computer hardware that is causing the hard drives to fail, or if it is a virus, can it be found and removed or should I just give up on it?

thank you for any help
Bob
