Preferred Solution: Need to replace internal hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello!
Last month, after a BSOD displayed (i don't have the error message code, unfortunately) my laptop decided to not work again.
At startup he reached the boot menu and then displays a black screen... no messages, no automatic reboot... nothing. Just a weird sound coming from the the hard-drive (like a scratched cd).

I've tried to Format the drive, but with no success. After choosing the boot source, he tries to read the cd and the black screen appears again, with no messages. i've checked if the cd bay is working properly and it is. ( i think)
So i've replaced the internal hard drive in my satellite 2450. A new toshiba ide 2,5 hard drive with 30gb. But when i install the new one, the system doesn't recognize it.

The Bios setup panel says that "no hard drive" is available, and i can't change that option. (it's locked)
With the Windows Xp cd in the drive, the setup runs all properly until the " select drive " format menu, witch says that no hard-drive is recognized (with a new hard- drive in).

I really don't know what else can i do!!!!!
Is it something's missing in this process?

Thank you for the patience

Answer:How to replace the internal Hard drive on Satellite 2450?

Hi

The notebook did not recognize a new HDD. That?s a reason why the Win XP cannot follow the further installation steps?

I cannot say exactly why the HDD is not recognized but the IDE 30GB should be ok.
I remember that a friend of mine has had similar problem with new HDD.
Some HDDs have an jumper ( 3.5? HDD and IDE 2.5? HDD too)?
Maybe you should check if an jumper has been set to right position (slave???).

Check it? otherwise I recommend testing with another new HDD?

In worst case the HDD controller could be faulty but this would mean that an motherboard should be replaced?

Hi all,

I have a simple question, and first off a disclosure, I haven't done any system imaging before.

If my purpose is to clone an internal HDD (Fujitsu 120 GB with about 80 GB used) on an old Compaq laptop to an external hard drive (WD Scorpio Black 320 GB), so that I can actually SWAP them when the need arises (ie. install the WD in the laptop), should I expect:
a) an exact copy of the internal drive, including OS, programs, data AND boot files?
b) the above to be done with either Acronis, as provided by WD, or Macrium Reflect?

Also, since I have extra space on the WD drive, should I use it as a plain back up of data as well on a separate partition, or restoring an image works best on one simple partition?

Now, here's the kicker, I read on this and other forums about perfect Image Creations, but definitely not perfect Image Recoveries! Is there a way to test it? Testing it, as in disabling the internal hard drive (thru BIOS?) and starting Windows from the external drive, is that possible? I think not

Thank you.

Hello everyone...I have a older system with win 7 pro 64 bit upgraded from xp pro. I have 2 internal drives C and D drives. I was prompted by windows to back-up and replace d>drive because it was failing. This is were my problem lies.

For whatever reason there is a folder on this drive titled windows and it appears to be a copy of the operating system. I can't delete this folder or format the drive to get rid of it. I spoke to the techs at western digital and he told me that i would have to load the operating system on this new d> drive in order for it to work....So i installed the new drive in the computer and then i get the black screen telling to change the booth sequence which I do...........then put disk ( I assume it means the O/S) in drive and then press any key........I hear it spin up and after that nothing happens, nothing at all....Can anyone please help me with this, it been almost 2 weeks trying to fix this problem?

Because of this I also have tried to create a system image to my external drive which is NG too! The backup is trying to make me back-up both c and d> drives which I don't really need to do, just need the image of the c>drive but can't unchecked the box for the d>drive. The end result after about 5 attempts is a bunch of errors concerning the folder (0x80780034) for this back-up...I honestly think it has something to do with the d>drive..

Once again if anyone can help, a big thanks in advance............Jim

Answer:Can't replace internal d>drive

Clarify a few things:

You mention having an internal C and an internal D drive. Are these in fact 2 separate drives, or are they simply 2 partitions on one drive?

If they are in fact 2 separate drives, will the PC boot with the D drive disconnected?

What is the purpose of the D drive?

You mention "installed the new drive". I assume this is intended as a replacement for D and am wondering why a WD tech would tell you to install Windows on it? Windows wants to be on C.

You mention trying to make a system image. With what application?

Off the top of my head, if I had 2 separate drives (C for Windows and D for whatever) and D failed, I'd simply swap in a new D and Windows would immediately recognize it.

Answer as best you can and post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management if you can boot at all.

Hi, I want to increase the storage capacity of my T430 laptop by removing the DVD drive and replacing it with the internal HDD.What should be the HDD sepcification for this and how to close the lid after adding the new HDD.How much capacity we can increase. Also is there any option to add extra capacity by replacing the internal drive of 500 GB and what should be the sepcoifcation. Is there any why to avoid installing the same set of software after HDD is replaced?  RegardsRajaniesh

Answer:Replace DVD drive of T430 laptop with extra internal Harddisk

Detailed specifications for T430, including HDD, are here:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=PD024705 To install a HDD instead of the DVD drive, you would need to use an UltraBay caddy.  You can also replace the internal drive by opening the HDD flap on the side.  You can clone HDDs by using software and a special cable, thus avoiding reinstalling programs separately.

So my 1 TB internal hard drive has less than 30 GB of space and I want to upgrade to a 2 TB internal so I can hold more of my games on it. How would I be able to transfer every single thing from the 1 TB to the 2 TB?

Answer:Help Upgrading 1 TB Internal to 2 TB Internal Hard Drive

Assuming this is for a desktop, you would plug in the new HDD into the sata port on your motherboard, amd make sure it is getting power from the PSU, and win7 should recognize it and mount it. You then make sure its has the NTFS file system and you can drag and drop from one drive to the other. Or use a program to copy over files like teracopy. I use teracopy because it keeps exact listing of what is being copied and exact info about size. Now as far as transferring games, I may be wrong but I think you would have to reinstall the game into the larger drive if you wanted to make use of the 2tb drive. I am not a big gamer so take my game advice with a bit of salt, I am simply trying my best to help you out

I see it can be done from an installed to an external, but can it be done in reverse, taking the external cased hard drive and cloning it to an internal? The old hard drive is from an xp laptop, and I can aquire another xp laptop if I can clone this way. Perhaps if I set the enclosure hard drive as master? All ideas are greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Hi all,

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

Answer:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

I recently formatted my c drive and now i am reinstalling all the software. I keep all the setups of software in my external hard drive. For installing the software I coy the setup folder of the required software on my laptop, then install it.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

I am running windows 8.1 pro

Answer:installation software from external hard drive or internal hard drive

Your method is as good as any. If it works, keep doing it.

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

I earlier posted about the Aspire AST690-UP925A having 250GB hard drive. I since then contacted Aspire chat support. Apparently, not being tech savy we didn't realize 250 gb hard drive only 112 c drive is able to be used, the d data drive holds the programs to run the computer.

I didn't mean can I use the external hard drive internally. I meant, if I hook it up externally would it work in place of the internal hard drive that is nearly full except for around 10 GB?

So, unfortunately the computer isn't as big as you believe. But...I wanted to know if I purchase (I was looking at western digital elements 2TB external hard drive). Can we use it for this computer. It will not run itunes or anything like that, but we can obviously go online.

My brother wants to buy a new computer, but I know that is probably not the way to go. Should we get an internal hard drive installed and other memory or something or can we use the external hard drive?

I would appreciate any informed help on this since we do not no technical info on computers. Can't really afford to buy another computer right now.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can external hard drive be used for full internal hard drive?

If you want to take out the drive from external hard drive case and install it in your desktop/laptop, then usually you can. Usually external hard drives are just ordinary hard drives accompanied by some extra controller to make it able to "talk" via general ports (e.g. USB). However I am not familiar with digital elements 2TB , so I can not confirm it. But I do have WD external drive, which I had positively confirm that its real drive is just ordinary hard drive.

Note that if you decide to do this, I suggest to find experience people to work on extracting the drive. If you do it yourself you will risk to damage it, and you don't want that since usually opening the closure means voiding the warranty.

Hi, for nearly a year now I've been using a Buffalo 500GB external hard drive.
Just yesterday though, after unplugging it from my PC, using it on another Windows 7 machine and then attempting to reconnect it the my PC, it began to show up on My Computer as a Local Disk rather than an external. In addition, when I try to access it, it gives me this message: E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. My question is, is there any way to return the drive to it's original state or recover the data inside? The data is of extreme importance.
Thanks for any help.

I have an HP dv6810us. its 7200 rpm and only has 160 gigabytes of space. I just bought a Western Digital My Book Essential 2TB external hard drive, at 7200 rpm; model: WDBAAF0020HBK-NESN. I have put ALL my movies, documents, music, pictures, and everything other than my programs and stuff that came with my computer. Hang on, so if I understand you correctly you've got a 160Gb drive installed in your laptop and it's only got 20Gb free space left. So now you want to put the 2TB drive into the laptop? Sorry, but that won't work. You'll need to buy another 2.5" drive. Is the drive inside your laptop SATA or IDE?

Hi guys,

I'm new on any sort of forums so go easy if it's a stupid question..but here goes.

Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch (he did the building - i did the watching).

To cut a long story short - I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly.

When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.

Does anyone know how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Internal Hard Drive acting like an External Hard Drive

This is the way it works. I have an 80GB SSD and an internal HDD and the same happens if the file/folder is large enough. If you just copy a few MBs, you will not see the window with the green stripe running. But if e.g. you copy 500MBs, you will see it. It physically moves the data. That is different if you copy on the same volume from one folder to another. Then it only makes an entry in the MFT.

I am unsure about what happens after you convert your internal hard drive to an external hard drive... Let's say the internal HDD was your only laptop HDD and you replaced it with a SSD. If you convert your old internal HDD to an external HDD, what would happen when you open it up on your newly installed OS (on the SSD)?

I am trying to download a new OS but us my old internal HDD as an external drive just to access specific files. However, I don't want any other data/programs/settings/etc. downloaded onto my new SSD. Do I need to delete my old OS when I convert my old internal HDD into an external HDD or does the OS simply get "reduced" to a bunch of files that I will see on my newly installed OS?

If anyone is able to clarify these questions that would be fantastic!

Yes
it will just be seen as a data drive and you would need to goto the directory for your data
it wont run as an OS at all

I have two WD hard drives with the OS installed on one and the other is for storage. All this started with a hard shut down when the PC froze and then after the restart Windows wouldn't boot at all. It was stuck at the Windows logo for a very long time. Then I checked in BIOS and I noticed the secondary drive was nowhere to be found.

After letting Windows run the automatic repair on the drive the drive showed up in BIOS and I could access two of the three partitions. The third partition threw me an error saying the disk structure is corrupt and unreadable when I tried to open it. In Disk Management the drive showed up as RAW format and healthy. Then I tried to backup whatever I could from the accessible partitions before everything froze.

I rebooted again and right now none of the partitions are visible in Windows and is not detected in BIOS. But in Disk Management it says the Disk 1 is unknown and has to be initialized and asks to initialize with either MBR or GPT partition styles. I've also tried running chkdsk, used EaseUS Recovery and other third party data recovery tools but none of them detect the drive anymore. The drive is however visible on HD Sentinel and it says there are bad sectors and data must be backed up immediately. Does this mean the drive is completely dead? I have over 700GB of invaluable data on it so I don't want to just give up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I ran a prescan with HDD Regenerator and it says the MBR is corrupted ... Read more

I bought a larger Gig USB external drive to copy all of my files onto in case of a problem with my windows XP Pro Drive and when I try to copy or paste it over to the external drive it gets to some files and says it can not copy because they are in use and nothing is running at the time I am trying to copy everything off my computer to the external hard drive. Is there another way to do this without having to buy a program I can not afford to do on social security?

Answer:copy internal hard drive to external hard dri

What are you trying to copy, the entire HDD contents? What would be the point of that? You can't run Windows or any programs from the external drive using the copy/paste method & you can't copy windows files that are in use. If you want to create an entire backup of your system, there's plenty of free software available for just that purpose. We need an better explanation of what it is you want to do.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

The R51 2887-W1F has a dead HDD.I start the laptop and WinXP Pro sits at the opening screen for 45 minutes.Nothing new installed, infact the Access button just freezes the laptop after a while too. I pulled the HDD out and ran a number of hardware tests, even MemTest86 for 4 hours and the laptop is in good shape.I put the HDD on an 2.5"-to-3.5" IDE adapter and tried to get 3 different PCs to see the HDD but I can't see the HDD and so I can't copy anything over to the PC.Any thoughts on how to do so? Since it appears to be a dead/dying 20GB HDD, I was going to replace it with a 80 GB HDD.I understand that's the biggest this R51 can use/see. I know the R51 had a special partition with some files, and IBM has a TON of special drivers too. So what problems can I expect with an outright replacement of HDD?Do I actually need the special partition & if so how do i install it? Moderator Note; please update your profile with your correct country location as per the forum rules. Answer:R51 2887 Hard drive is dead, how to replace the drive and setup.

You should be able to upgrade to any PATA size drive of 9.5 mm thickness that you wish, there is no limit in size. So you can get a 250 gig if you want, any harddrive brand. If you don't have the original recovery cd, then you will have to use off the shelf version of the XP pro cd and activate it using your own s/n on the bottom of the laptop. You can download most of the drivers off the Lenovo.com support site.

I have a new E525 that I am trying to use with some external eSATA storage. If I boot the system with the eSATA drive attached, the internal HDD is not found and the system will not boot. I get "Fixed Disk: External Disk 0" on the diagnostic splash screen. If I boot with the eSATA drive turned off, and turn it on once the OS has booted, all is well and both internal and external drives are found.Any ideas? I have looked for a BIOS update but have not been able to find one. I've also been through most of the BIOS settings but can't see anything that looks relevant.

Answer:E525 internal hard drive not detected by BIOS when eSATA drive attached

It appears that this has something to do with the hard drive ordering. When the machine is switched on with the eSATA drive attached, eSATA becomes SATA HDD0 (presumably the internal drive becomes SATA HDD1).The only option to boot from SATA drives on the boot order menu in the BIOS is SATA HDD0, so it never tries to boot from HDD1 (now the internal drive).I can see this is useful if you WANT to boot from the eSATA, but I don't........

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.

What do I do?

edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

Answer:External hard drive shell broke, salvaged internal drive

As long as your hard disk is still spinning & recognized by Windows, the data in your hard disk is still there, just the File Allocation Table got corrupted, You'll have a good chance to recover your data. What you need is a data recovery program, I use this program in the past:

Data Recovery Software Products - Runtime Software Products

In the mean time, leave this hard disk alone, do not initialize or format it when Windows offers to do so.

I have an M90Z (non-touch) and love it.  Does anyone know if it would be possible to replace the Western Digital 320GB drive with a solid state drive? The system is great, but I do work with some pretty large database files and access time is much more important than storage capacity.  I could get by with a much smaller drive than the 320. Thanks.

Answer:M90Z..Replacing the internal drive with a solid state hard drive?

I assume it is possible.   According to the spec sheet, Lenovo offers the M90z with a SSD "For special bid only". http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/desktops/ThinkCentre/M-Series%20all-in-ones/WW%20Thi...   I love mine too.    What processor did you get? What do you use it for?  I hope you got the stand. It is so much better with it.  Here is some information I posted about the volume. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/A-and-M-Series-ThinkCentre/M90z-tip-Speaker-sound-volume/m-p/381735 If you add the SSD, come back to this thread and let us know what the performance is like.

Is it possible to have pre-installed vista on your internal drive then buy a new external drive, install XP on it and then boot that drive to use XP?

Answer:Running Xp on an external hard drive with Vista installed on internal drive.

Yes this is possible as long as your BIOS supports booting from USB.

Brand names are irrelevant especially when you are installing your own OS.

That would be the idea if you have it set to boot from disk in the system BIOS. The CD/DVD must have first priority over the HDD to boot.

I bought a Y560 laptop October 2010 with 32GB SSD / 500GB HDD because of it's promotion of this new rapid drive technology in Hong Kong, and everything goes fine for few months. Last week, I powered my laptop normally but the windows loads to the repair screen automatically. After self-restart, "Operating System not found" is shown and no further operation. Then I tried to use Onekey recovery to rescue my OS, but after I knew all data would be initialized after using, I chose not to continue and tried to plug out the hard drive and restore my data via other computer in accordance to the Lenovo's suggestion. Unfortunately, the major partition was not readable by windows. The next day, I brought it to the service centre, and asked them how can I rescue my data. They said the same procedure that I've did that unplugging my hard drive and copying my data via other computer. Of course, I've told them I've performed the same task and still not work and asked them to demonstrate for me, but they said they haven't got any spare machine to do demonstration. After that, they tried to repair my laptop with windows installation disk, but I've questioned them there is a notice that to use Onekey recovery to perform system maintenance, they replied that is a standard procedure of repairing services. 3 Hours after, I still could not get the corresponding answer how can I rescue my data from my hard drive and got these responses: 1. Answer:750 GB 2.5 Inch 7200RPM Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive Internal Hard Drive

There isn't a simple answer. This drive has 4K sectors, (advanced format) so the answer (yes/no) depends on what operating system and service packs you are running and how you intend to load your OS/data to the new drive

I have Vista Home Premium with two 320 GB internal hard drives © & (E). I am trying to put Vista on drive E and upgrade to Windows 7 on drive C.
I had successfully cloned the drive C of Vista onto an external hard drive and copied it to drive E (the second internal hard drive). When I copied the cloned copy of Vista to drive E, the system changed the drive letter to L. Everything was working fine and I could boot into either C or L.
In a fit of neatness I guess, I decided that I would like to have the newly labeled drive L designated as drive E again and changed it to drive E in "Disk Management" while I was booted into drive C.
Now I am unable to boot into the second internal drive. I just get a blank screen. I can get "Task Manager" but nothing else, not even the "Start" icon.
I booted back into C and changed the drive back to L, but that didn't work either.
I tried to boot the second internal drive in Safe Mode, but just got a blank screen, without the start icon.
I tried restoring to a previous date, but that wouldn't work and it only restores C anyway.
When I'm booted in drive C, it shows the second internal drive L and shows all the files and programs that should be on drive L.
How do I get the drive restored so I can boot into it?
Thanks to anyone that can help.

Answer:can't boot to second internal hard drive after changing drive letter

I don't know if this helps, but is drive L still marked as an "active" partition in disk management?  When you right click the partition the option should be there to do so if it is not marked as such.

Is there any reason I cannot install a ThinkPad 320GB 7200 RPM SATA drive (43N3411) as the primary internal hard drive on my R60 (9456-57U)? Is it possible to replace the optical drive with a 2nd hard drive?  I've installed a 128GB SSD as my primary drive on my Y560.  I'm interested in disassembling the laptop and replacing the Optical Drive with a secondary hard drive for storage.  It doesn't appear that the DVD Drive is designed to be removed, but is it possible with some effort to replace?

I am trying to upgrade my hard drive and clone the old one to it in my X201. I have been told that I need to first replace the old hard drive with the new one, then boot off the old one via USB. I can then clone the old one to the new one. When inside the system, my hard drive boots just fine. However, when I hook up the hard drive externally and boot from it, it gets to the Windows logo then blue screens very quickly and reboots. Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Answer:When internal, hard drive will boot just fine. When USB, hard drive will not boot (blue screen)

I had the same issue when upgraded HDD to SSD in my x220. I think it's Lenovo hidden partittion related behavior (System_DRV in my case). And MBR of course. Just swap the drives and clone the old HDD to the new one.

I received a Samsung SSD as a gift and would like to swap out my hard drive.  Looking at documentation (or lack of), on-line at HP and the internet at large, there is no information on how to access my hard drive.  I tried the basics - remove the battery, remove the multi-media bay, remove the screws from the bottom, but after that, I am at a loss.   Looking at videos and documents for other HP latops, it appears that I should remove the 3 small screws above the media bay, but I have 7 or so (going from memory).   Suppose I did that... then what?  Any help or guidance is MUCH appreciated.

I want to get the 2tb western digital  internal hard drive for my t40p.  I've been reading that if its not a Lenovo hard drive I might have warning messages at boot, is this correct?  I've compared the size and it looks like it will fit.  Also, my old hard drive failed so what else do I need to get my laptop working, a recovery disk or will rescue and restore work?  Will one of these recover Windows?Message Edited by zorro7444 on 02-17-2009 08:31 AMMessage Edited by zorro7444 on 02-17-2009 01:11 PM

Answer:Need to replace hard drive

Welcome to the forum! Your T40p requires a PATA/IDE hard drive, and the largest one available is WD 250GB/5400rpm. No errors will be triggered, this is a problem only  with T43/p, R52 and X41/T units. You will need a set of recovery disks to get your ThinkPad to factory state once the new drive is installed. Hope this helps.

I've been supporting this Power Mac G4 since it was new in June of 2002.
Other than installing a SCSI card for the photo printer and the occasional cleaning, it's worked flawlessly.
It's in daily use for editing and annotating Aerial photos.
Yesterday I had to reinstall Illustrator for a weird parsing error I've never seen before, and it got me to thinking that the HD has been used heavily for nearly 6 years.
This machine is the backbone of this small business, and they're willing to do what's necessary, so my question is whether it's a good idea to preemptively replace this HD.
6 years seems like a long run to me, but I've never replaced an HD based on age alone, so what do the experts think?

Answer:Do I need to replace my hard drive?

Probably. I would back up your data to something else like dvd's or external drive, just to be safe. You do not mention if the computer still boots. If the computer still loads windows seatools has a windows based program to download and test hard drives, works on most all of them, or you can check the make on your hard drive and go to the manufacturer's website and follow the directions to using their disk testing utility. Many times you download and ISO file and make a bootable cd (cause windows no longer loads in many cases), you boot to the cd on start up and run the short generic test and then the long, if it fails you know it's time is about up.http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/suppor...

I have had this computer for about 6 years now and have no reason to believe that the HD is about to become faulty. I am wondering if, just as a safety measure, I should replace it or at least add another against the evil day when this one finally wears out. When I get another I would imnagine that I would transfer all my data and the operating (W2K) system to the new one. Yes, it might be advisible to have a secondary disk as a backup, or even use the current disk as the backup and transfer your OS onto the new one.xxcopy will do the job; the new disk may also come with software that will transfer everything for you.

My computer is giving me the "imminent failure" message and keeps crashing, so I understand it's time to replace the hard drive. I don't know what to buy and would appreciate some tips. The computer is a Compac Presario 6000 with Windows XP if that helps. I want this to be as painless as possible.

Answer:I have to replace my hard drive. How do I know what to buy?

It's giving you this message because you have S.M.A.R.T enabled in the bios.

This is a self monitoring program for your hard drive, and is supposed to warn you of impending failure so you have enough time to back up your system.

It's not perfect, so I would try a hard disk utility to double check, either from your drives website, or try something like SiSoftWare Sandra and/or Dr. Hardware.

If you find you do need a new drive, basically look for one that is at least ATA100, 7200 rpm, 8 mb cache, and with at least a three year warranty.

Seagate is the only manufacture that I know that offers 5 years on their drives, while others offer usually 3 like Western Digital, Samsung, Maxtor etc, or even only 1 on their cheaper units.

As far as size is concerned, make sure your motherboard supports drives over 137 GB if you are after one that large. Also, Windows XP won't support drives over 137 GB unless you have a CD with SP1 slipstreamed or included.

Installing SP1 after you have installed the operating system doesn't work, it must be part of the installation disc.

No - that will work fine but - Yes there is more you CAN do if you have a Partition Manager. Install your new drive a master and the old a slave then boot up using a bootable floppy into Partition Manager and copy the entire directory to the new drive. Make the new drive 'Active' and you can then remove the old drive and you will be running exactly as before.

HI,The Samsung 850 evo, pro have  been voted the best hard drives prize/performance by international PC magazines. If you have the Windows 10 disk you can use it to install the OS on the SSD, you will not even need the product key if windows 10 has already been installed previously on the PC as it will (the same edition) be automatically activated once installed and connected to internet (just click on do not have product key when prompted). You can also insert your product key.You can also download the media creation tool from Microsoft and by running this tool download  original copy of windows 10 iso or create a bootable USB pendrivefrom Microsoft. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Personally I like to perform a clean install (custom install) without recovery drive and get all the most recent drivers from HP site or if necessary from the manufacturer of the device. Here is where you can get drivers for windows 10 for your PC:http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-touchsmart-17-j100-quad-edition-notebook-pc-... Let me know if you need further help,David

First of all, i have had my t61 for 3 years without any upgrades and now i feel like i need a bigger and faster hard drive. i am not going to buy a new laptop but i have enough money to buy an internal hard drive. i have done a lot of research and dound that there are only certain hard drive i can use for example, it has to be SATA. I found one hard drive that is quite good and cheap. Seagate 500GB 7200RPM SATA 16MB Cache Internal Hard Drive. Thing is, most websites I have search said a Compatible hard drive will be 9.5cm and this one is 8.9cm. Question is, can i still install this hard drive????????

My HD died on me (ran into a bad cluster while doing a complete scan and then failed to reload, etc.) and I need to replace it with a suitable substitute that is the same capacity. The old one was a Maxtor D540X 60GB ATA/100, I think the most appropriate replacement would be a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus-9 ATA/133 60GB, but I wonder if anyone could confirm this. The OS is Windows Me.

I bought a new thinkpad T61  back in April. I underestimated the size of a hard drive that I purchased.  I want to replace the hard drive with a larger one, I have the ultra bay hard drive adapter,   can this be done using that??? If so, how can I do it?  Is it just as simple as copying the C drive to the Ultra bay drive and then swapping them out??

Answer:Want to replace Hard Drive

Thease easiest way to do this is to create an image of your current HDD then write it to the new HDD when you place it into the main HDD bay. There are a few third party softwares that can do this for you.

Question: Replace Hard Drive

I want to replace my hard drive (Model ST910021AS) with a larger capacity. Can I just go to my local hardware vendor and buy a larger drive?  I don't want to loose any features such as the shock protection or temperature reporting? Thanks!

Answer:Replace Hard Drive

Thinkpads should have built in accelerometer (APS) that controls the head parking of harddrive, while some harddrive have builtin shock detection feature, most of the newer harddrive have head parking feature, therefore most of the new harddrive should be compatible with Lenovo's APS. Not sure about temperature reporting, but i imagine it is fairly common, as most other laptops can also report hdd temp. I can use it on my desktop.  If you are worried just get Hitachi Travelstar, Seagate or Fujitsu harddrive.

Both the C and D partitions of my 80GB hard disk are full (Compaq desktop with Win XP). I'd like to replace the internal drive with a much larger one. But I don't want to reinstall all my apps. Is it possible to replace the current hard drive, make it the bootable drive, then move everything from the old drive to the new one, including the registry? If so, how can I do this?

Thanks!

Mike

Answer:Can I replace my C hard drive?

Its possible for sure and not too hard either.

Once you have the drive you want to install it will either come with software or you can download free software from the manufacturer of the drive to clone the old hard drive to the new drive. Once cloned just disconnect the old drive and connect the new drive in its place and everything should be as it was but with more space.

You can then add the old drive back in a secondary drive for additional storage.

As a example if you buy a Seagate drive you can use DiscWizard from Seagate to migrate your system over to the new drive: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

You can also use third party paid programs with a greater range of options such as Acronis TrueImage or Symantec's Ghost to clone the drive.

Question: Replace Hard Drive

Hey guys, I'm having a issue with a HP Elite computer, its now saying on startup that the hard drive is going to fail and must be replaced. It still works great after boot up. Is there a program that i can use to make a exact copy of the original onto another then just replace the hard drive.

I have read that a program XXCopy may be able to do this for me.

Thanks for any help.

I have a Dell inspiron 1150. I have been having problems with the OS not booting up. After running a diagnostic on the laptop, I got the following failure .....DST short test FAIL.......code 1000-0146. A google search leads me to believe that this is a hard drive problem.

1. What type of hard drive do I need to replace it (found many on ebay) the original is 30 gb.

2. Is there any problem with replacing it with say a larger hard drive (60 or 120 gb)?

3. Will it come with windows xp already on it or can I simply load it from the disk that came with the computer?

It seems fairly simple to replace......or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

Larry

I have a hotswap caddy in my Vista Dell PC and need a new hard drive to use in it.
So far I have only used 1 TB drives with it.
Is the physical size of a 3Tb drive the same as 1Tb or Tb drives, and will it go into the caddy?
Will a Dell XPS 435MT (i7 920)with Bios 1.1.2 running 64bit Vista SP2 OS be OK with a 3TB drive?
sorry, I can't find how old the PC is : maybe 3 years?
Thank you!.

Hi,I have a old internal hard drive, which was out my Pc tower, now I own a laptop, how can you connect the hard drive to the laptop, can you buy a wire/connector/USB to sort this ???

Answer:Internal hard drive

You can get just cables, but you are probably best buying a USB caddy to put the drive in. You need to determine whether the old drive is IDE or SATA type and get a cable or caddy for that type.If you just want to use the space on the old drive for storing things you might be better off buying a complete external drive - they are not expensive - see click here)

My Cooler master cast has an intel hard drive enclosure which you mount the drives in and in the front of it there is a fan (80mm i think) it keeps my drive very cool and i was wondering if you cna buy these simple internal enclosure for a normal system. Or if there is some equlivant. (side note my computer doesnt have any internal 3.5" bays just 8 (i think) 5.25)

Answer:Internal Hard drive box

Never seen anything, but you never know.
If your drives are getting very hot you could install a system fan or two that may help with cooling.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed on this laptop. This summer I want to buy a new hard drive with more space. And that's basically all I know.

The hard drive I'm looking at is a TOSHIBA MK2552GSX(HDD2H02) 250GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive. I have the original disk for Windows Vista that came with the laptop. I've swapped out old parts for new ones on my desktop computer, but have never done any hardware changes on a laptop and never changed a hard drive altogether.

Answer:Everything I need to know while getting a new internal hard drive

The difference with a laptop, in my experience, is finding and removing the old drive. You'll want to back up the old files first, of course.
I would just make an image of the old drive, install the new one, then restore the image.
I assume your old drive is SATA.
There's a general tutorial here:
