T500 Bluetooth and Function keys

Question: T500 Bluetooth and Function keys

Hi guys, I recently had to replace HDD and install a fresh copy of Windows 7 on my laptop, and when it came to re-downloading drivers, I encountered a few problems. First being, the bluetooth. When I was installing the 'Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software' I kept getting an error: "Bluetooth SoftwareNo Bluetooth device was detected. Please make sure that your Bluetooth device is plugged in properly in order to continue installation." Which is strange because when I inserted my previous hard drive, my bluetooth was working flawlessly. I even tried installing the same software from the same HDD onto other HDD, yet the problem persisted. The light on the panel is not lighting up. Another problem is with the Function keys. I downloaded and installed 4 different versions of 'Hotkey Features Integration' software, and I'm still not getting any feedback when using the volume keys, ThinkVantage button, Fn+F2, or any other one. I rebooted the computer multiple times, reinstalled the software multiple times, and even looked in CMOS settings as to 'what could be wrong'. Thank you in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: T500 Bluetooth and Function keys

As soon as I posted this, I frantically started hitting various Fn keys. After I pressed Fn+F8, the touchpad settings window popped up, a balloon saying "New hardware detected" and Bluetooth started installing, and when I clicked Fn+F5, the settings window came to life. I really don't know the cause of this, but I think something was stalling the system for 2 days straight. I don't know what the solution is, but if anyone will experience this in the future, please try hitting every single key on the F1-F12 row while holding Fn. Regards, Ruslan.

I think CCleaner is the culprit as soon after running that, I lost all my onscreen indicators (volume, brightness, battery meter in the system tray, etc.) as well as functionality - volume up and down work, but mute does not.  Blue Thinkvantage button doesn't work.  Also, none of the Function keys now work.  I re-installed software - the HotKey manager, the ThinkVantage toolbox and have done all updates, but still the T500 refuses to cooperate.  I'm running Win7 32bit.  If anyone has some advice to get things running correctly again, it'd be most appreciated. thanks, Dan

I have P750 Satelitte and I have upgraded OS to Windows 10. Unfortunatelly P750 isnt at supoorted Windows 10 upgrade list.

After upgrade it seems that almost everything works, but I have problem with two things:
1. bluetooth - there is a problem with driver (shown yellow exlamation)
2. toshiba specific function keys doesnt work

Maybe someone have solved this problem, expecially with bluetooth driver. At toshiba page there ara of cource no drivers for Windows 10.
I can of course connect external bluetooth dongle, but it would be best to use internal one. Bluetooth and Windows 10 is important for me, because I want to use XBOX One S pad for gaming for my children, and this controller can work via bluetooth only in Windows 10 aniversary version.

anyone can help ? maybe drivers from other laptops could work ??

with best regards !

My Ideapad P500 function keys do things like changing volume and display brightness by default; to make them actually work as F1, F2, ... keys, I need to press Fn key. Any idea how to change that? All I could find on the web was two solutions for Thinkpads:1) BIOS option - no such option on this laptop.2) Some Slim USB wirless keyboard utlility - it doesn't change anything on this laptop. I also messed with KeyTweak and SharpKeys, but without good results. For instance, F1, F2, F3 get remapped fine; but these programs don't see F7 (which toggles flight mode).

Answer:Make function keys work as function keys on Ideapad P500

My work around is to attach external USB keyboard.

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hello,

1) i am asking for your help about installing my Fn keys drivers for my Satellite A200 14 D PSAECE laptop.
My OS is Windows XP and i have Bitdefender Internet Security 2009 .
From the download page of Toshiba drivers i got all drivers for my laptop (36 of all - or close), but from the many Xp reinstalations i have done on my laptop, only one time all Fn keys worked when pressing Fn+key and the corresponding icons appeared on my display. I have read some forum topics and i understand there is a problem about the order in which i have to install them ( i already installed them all but it is not working ), so i need someone to tell me which are the drivers for Fn keys only and in which order to install. Please do not forget that i can deactivate my Bitdefender but not uninstall .

2) the same problem with the preset buttons above the keys - On-Off, Internet, Media Player, Play-Stop-Rewind, i need the exact driver and the order.

Thank you for your time :)
Sorry if this question is already answer in the forum somewhere, but i could not get this exact answer.

Answer:Satellite A200-14D PSAECE - Fn keys not working & other function keys

Hi

I remember that the BIOS should be updated to the Win XP version on Satellite A200 series.
There are two different BIOS versions and depending on the installed (Vista or Win XP) the right version should be used.

But there are many FN buttons which needs additional installation of different tools.
For example the Touch Pad On/Off Utility should be installed to use the FN+F9 buttons.

Furthermore you should install the Controls Driver 2.49.2.5C and Controls 3.22.2701 in order to get the Toshiba Control buttons functionality.

Hi everyone i'm new to this forum and I am in desperate need of help. I've had my laptop for about 3 months now and just last month I noticed that the shift key on the left side did not work for some letters. I then noticed that I can't type almost any numbers in word without it doing someother function, for example, some numbers open the save as box, others open the spelling and grammar, others open word search and help options. The same happens even when i'm online. The letter p opens up developer tools, and the number 1 opens up windows help. The number do all kinds of things. The number five is the worst though. It completely refreshes my page and if i'm inputting any info, I have to start all over. I've called sony and talked with about five people and tried all sorts of diagnostic tests. I've restored the computer as well. A service guy came over and changed the keyboard so that's not the problem. It's not the number lock key either so Any suggestions? Please help!!!! I love my vaio but i'm going crazy!

I just bought my Satellite C870-12F, and I noticed the Function keys (F1, F2 etc.) only work when using the Fn key, I was wondering if I can 'swap' them, so that I have to press Fn first, and then increasing brightness for example.

I'm used to have the F keys to be primary, without an additional key required to activate them.

Answer:Satellite C870-12F - Swapping FN keys and Function keys

As far as I know you cannot change anything.
Flash cards keys (Fx) can be used in combination with FN key only.

Hello all, my function keys have stopped working completely. I tried following the keyboard troubleshooting guide where it says to look for a HOT KEYS driver on hp.com, the problem is that this driver is not avaible for my device. Also, I tried googling it and download this hot keys driver for windows 10 and when I try to install it, it just says it's not compatible with my device. Don't know what else to do.

Hi,Is there any solution for IdeaPad U510`s keyboard, so that the function keys F1-F12 and the 4 keys above the numeric block (Home, End PgUp and PgDn) keys work without the Fn key at the same time? In BIOS, there is either the first or the other option. I had to chose the "legacy" option, but now I have to reach for Fn to use PgUp/PgDown, which is not good. Any tool or bios update for this?

So my computer works fine, but for some reason the function keys were switched up. When I'm on the desktop, they don't do anything at all, and when I'm in Google Chrome they do things that aren't related to what they're supposed to do.
F1 used to mute/unmute, now it opens the internet browser and searches Bing for Windows 10 help.
F2 lowered volume, now it doesn't seem to do anything.
F3 raised volume, now it opens the page search on the internet browser.
F4 rewound, now it does nothing.
F5 paused/played, now it refreshes the page.
F6 used to fast-forward, now it functions essentially like a tab key but only for boxes I can type in.
F7 I don't believe had an assigned function, and it still doesn't, so at least that's the same.
F8 I believe used to enter/exit full screen mode, now it does nothing.
F9 used to open inspect page, now it does nothing also.
F10 I have no idea what it used to do, but it doesn't do anything now.
F11 lowered brightness, now it toggles full screen.
F12 raised brightness, now it opens inspect page.

I'm running Windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron. Does anyone know a way to re-assign my function keys? I've tried searching through This PC -> Manage and can't seem to find anything.

Answer:Function keys performing the wrong function

F1 for Help, F11 for full screen and so on, those are the normal functions of F keys. On laptops you can use the manufacturer specific alternative functions by pressing and holding down the FN key then pressing preferred F key. In you case I bet that if you press FN + F1 instead of just F1, it works in the way Dell has customized it, as mute / unmute.

(Position of FN key on actual keyboard may vary.)

Most laptops allow user to set default function key action in BIOS / UEFI settings. In your case it sounds that your laptop was earlier set to give Dell specific functions without FN key and normal functions with it, and now it has been changed to give normal standard functions without FN key and Dell specific functions with it.

Hi, Two questions regarding function keys in Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430 (may apply to other models): 1. I realized that Fn-B (yes, letter "B") produces a different scan code. Does anybody knows what is it supposed to do? I guess something related to the trackpoint, since it's the closest thing?2. Is there any way for the mute key (Fn-F4) does mute the Bluetooth headset? (guess not) Thanks!

If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

Answer:S430 function keys: "B" and mute keys

No idea about question 1.  I don't understand question 2, I think you've got a typo in there. F1 is mute in my keyborad (UK layout), F4 is for disabling the microphone.

Hi,

Sorry if this seems a silly question, but it is driving me mad!!

Today when I started up my computer (Sony Vaio) the normal numerical keys (the ones at the top, not the number pad at the right) are behaving like the function keys. Numlk is not on. The delete key is also not quite right. The only thing I have done differently is last night a windows update installed. I tried going back to a prior restore point just in case, but it wont restore to a prior point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, hopefully it is a quick thing. I'm using windows 7 home premium.

Thanks

Answer:Numeric keys acting as function keys. Help!

I should add that I have tried reinstalling the keyboard, and using system restore (it says that it wont let the system restore as something is using one of the files i.e. virus software, but I dont have any running - error 0x80070005, but I managed a system restore from safe mode - problem is still there). I have also spent 1 hour on the phone to Sony - who can only suggest a return to factory settings - but I really dont want to have to do that right now).

The numerical keys will still work (see above) I just get the addded options also. The numerical keypad is also behaving oddly, i.e. when I press 1 I get "21".

I want to be able to use the function keys as traditional function keys for my WordPerfect word processing program, ie F7 is exit and save, F4 is indent, etc.  The function keys are now hotkeys.  Is there any way I can turn off the hotkey features of the F1-F12 function keys?

Is there a way to completely disable the HotKey setting?  I always need access to my F1-F12 keys without having to hit the function button first.  I know how to go into settings and turn on the F1-F12 function, but I was wondering if there is a way to disable the HotKeys altogether.  Every time I shutdown or restart my computer, the F1-F12 setting automatically goes back to the HotKey setting, thus, causing me to go in and change it every time.  Thanks!

Answer:Replacement keys for a T500

I'm not sure, but I think the T60 keys are the same. I don't have a keyboard with a T500 FRU on it, but the keys look the same and the keyboards are interchangable. I replace keys all the time and once you have done a lot, they can be done quickly. The first time, it took a long time. This eBay item shows the 3 styles of keys. Also, there are 3 sizes. Your "P" will be a regular one. First, see what is broken. If just the cap is broken, it is easy to snap on. The hinge is hard to replace unless you have some practice. The cup needs to be glued. If the metal tabs are damaged on the keyboard base, you probably cannot fix it..http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-T500-Replacement-Laptop-Keyboard-Key-Hinges-Clips-/290386965903?pt=PCA_Mice_...

Answer:T500: add bluetooth

takedown,

This question has come up before in other threads.  Basically, the bluetooth card for the T500 is located behind the LCD bezel.  Any parts concerning the LCD are not replaceable by customers.

So if you order your system without bluetooth, the best route is a peripheral solution (like you already have).  Having a licensed servicer install this part would be expensive.

I imaged/cloned the 160GB drive in a new T500 to a 320GB Western Digital drive before even booting the machine for the first time. I did this so the original HD could be set aside as a backup.   When I tried to boot from the 320GB drive I got the following error message:    SMBIOS Table:         Table Mismatch - Updating Intel (R) AMT [Complete]          Setting New Table Fingerprint I thought that Intel AMT was probably the problem, so I went into the bios settings and disabled Intel AMT Next time I booted I got this error message:    PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0008h    PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0100h When I look at the 320GB drive using a bootable CD it appears as though the Windows XP partition and the recovery partition are both there same as on the stock 160GB disk that the machine came with.  The Boot.ini file is present and appears to have the correct entries. Appreciate any suggestions.

My T500 is a little over a year old.  About 3 months ago, I upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista - and generally have been pleased with the result.  However -  one weird thing happens that I can't seem to figure out and don't know what I should try. When I use the Fn + F7 key to change the display mode, my keyboard becomes wonky about the function I can use is the mouse.  All other keys don't work - they may cause the system to switch between screens, or resize the screen.  The only way I have found to get my keyboard back working is re-boot.  In writing this email, with no projector attached, I simply pressed the FN + F7 keys to look and the screen and the keyboard went wonky, so I don't think it has actually has anything to do with projector? My thinkpad has the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 Display adapter.   I don't remember if I had this problems when the laptop had Vista or not.

Is the LED behind the bluetooth icon on the T500 panel permanently on?  In both XP and Win 7, I've never had bluetooth running in the background -- I've disabled the service.  I'll enable it should I ever need it.  For now it's just a battery drain. So what's the story on this light?  Does this mean that bluetooth is still running somehow?  If bluetooth is going to suck power regardless of my OS settings, I don't much see the point of this light -- it's always on anyway, so what does the light tell me exactly? Maybe my light is stuck?

Why have the function keys been disabled in Windows 7? I know from other threads and tutorials thatthere are ways of getting atthe functions (though not if your laptop is on the old side - my Toshiba Portege can't access the option to show both a display on its screen and a video projector for example). But even a simple things like rename and help, which many programs access via F2 and F1, now don't work.

Seems silly to disable these useful functions.

Answer:Function keys (again)

They aren't "disabled", you need to install the drivers for your laptop that tell windows what the function keys do.

I have been trying Windows 7 on my laptop and when I tried using it with a video projector, while it worked, I was unable to get the Function F5 key to work - the one that toggles the display between laptop screen/external screen or both. All I could get was the video projector image and a black screen on the laptop.
Is this a W7 quirk or my laptop? It worked OK with XP. I see similar problems reported elsewhere on this forum but this is slightly different.

Not sure how to explain this abstractly, so I will give an example. If I press the F12 key by itself, it turns off the wireless connection. If I want to actually input "F12," I have to enter fn-F12. What's the procedure for reversing this? I.e., I want to have to enter fn-F12 to turn off the wireless, etc. Isn't there a way to do this in the control panel of Windows 8?

Answer:Function keys and F1, F2, F3, etc.

It probably depends on the make of computer (presumably a laptop?).

There may be a utility provided by the laptop manufacturer, or you may need to get into the machine's BIOS or UEFI settings to change it.

Question: function keys

Is it possible to have permanent the function keys instead the light, volume etc keys?thanks

Answer:function keys

hi adso53,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Some Laptop Models have the option in the BIOS to Invert the F keys on top
       Try booting into BIOS by
Tapping F2 right after you press the Power to turn it on
You will be booted into BIOS and try going into the Configurations Tab
See if there is any option that says Hotkey.
That's your option. you can disable or enable it to what you prefer.

Best Regards
Solid Cruver

Hi, You should be able to change the default action as follows. Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( f10 ). Use the arrow keys to select the 'System Configuration' tab and hit enter - the option you are looking for should look something like the image below. Change the 'Action Key Mode' setting to Enabled. Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Regards, DP-K

Question: Function Keys

I have purchased a new Pavilion dv6 Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on which I am running Virtual Acorn RiscPC StrongArm Adjust. With all the other PC,s I have owned and upon which I have run VA I have been able to use the F3 key to "Save" instead of clicking over the "save" icon. This F3 key is also used on my real Acorn Risc PC. My question is how can I get my Laptop to do this when running VA , because the key is programmed (by Windows ?) to increase the brightness of the screen? However, thankfully the F12 + Shift + CTRl function as normal to shut down VA.(again as you would on a real Acorn RiscPC.
I have spoken to HP and they do not appear to have an answer except to say they they do not support the Virtual Acorn programme.

If I recall correctly, you first need to hold down the FN key (bottom left). That'll make the F keys operate like you expect them to.

Question: The function keys

I have an HP 15ayoo9dx lap top. The Function keys (or action keys as they call them) can be enabled or disabled by going in the BIOS. I?m trying to decide if I want to disable or enable. What is the difference?
Thank you.

Answer:The function keys

I think it's really personal preference. I keep my function keys active because they offer me a quick way to adjust speaker volume, change screen brightness, refresh a web page (F5 on most keyboards) and several other one-click options. I don't use the function keys every time I sit down at the computer, but I like having them available.

Hi all. I was just given a ThinkCentreA70 for work. The keyboard with it has an Fn key to the right of the function keys. That's fine. However, if I want to use my function keys as function keys (e.g. hitting F1 for help in a program), I have to hit this Fn key before I hit the function key. I use my computer for work, so I don't need these keys to alter my volume, put my computer to sleep, play a CD, etc. I'll never use these keys for this. I'm a programmer, so I use my function keys a lot. In Excel, I use keyboard shortcuts ALL the time (<Alt><F11> to open up the VBE window, <Shift><F11> to insert a new worksheet, etc.). So now instead of a two-key keyboard shortcut, it's a three-key shortcut. Is there a way to disable the Fn key or to alter something on my PC to make the Fn key permanantly pressed (or toggled the inverse of the default)?

Question: function keys

Ok, so I decided to assign F11 to open an application that I use frequently. One of our people wrote a little program for hot keys that uses F11 as the 'enable/disable' toggle. So I changed the shortcut back to none in the properties dialog and F11 still tries to open the afore-mentioned application. Is there somewhere else other than rt-click-properties-shortcut key that I need to change it so that I can have the nifty hotkeys too? Or do I just need to have the creator assign a different enable key for mine?

I have upgraded my T500 to windows 7 (for the G2 Intel SSD. Where's my TRIM damnit!) and I am trying to get my AD2P Bluetooth headset to talk to the laptop. The can pair but continually complain there is no driver for the Bluetooth peripheral device. I have the latest Thinkpad Bluetooth stack installed. Is there some way to fool the Broadcom drivers into letting me install the official stack? Is there some beta stack out there? This doesn't seem to be a Windows 7 issue, the pairing occurs, and I'm using the same driver the Vista people use. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Peter Berbec

Answer:T500 AD2P Bluetooth Woes

What do you mean by "Thinkpad Bluetooth stack installed"?is "stack" the same as software/driver? I can only witness my own problem: bluetooth installed correcty but didn't work properly. My laser bluetooth connection would often drop (although the mouse was always displayed in the device manager) and I always had to turn the bluetooth off and and on to make it work, which became irritating after a couple of weeks. I finally found out that I had the wrong driver version installed: If you look in the device manager, you will see that you probably have driver version 6.2.0.9000 for the bluetooth device.unfortunately this is not good enough after the xxxx9000 there are more numbers (which are not displayed).I realized there are 2 drivers version out there. the one that windows 7 installed and the one provided by Lenovo. The one provided by Microsoft has version 6.2.0.9000.300 I believe. the one provided by lenovo is 6.2.0.9000.000I uninstalled the most recent version xxxxxx.300 and put back the one from lenovo website.again, I can't remember if is was xxxxxx.300 but it was higher than xxxxx.000Since then my mouse works consistently

There are no warnings in the device manager. I can go to "Add a device" and Windows says it is searching but none are found. I even tried using a Belkin USB bluetooth dongle that will connect the keyboard to another computer and no devices are found by the Thinkpad. Appears that bluetooth is being blocked somehow.  I have completely dissabled Symantec Endpoint and Windows firewall. I realize that there are a mulittude of threads on this and other forums about bluetooth not working.  I have read and tried every solution previously listed with no success.  Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Is there any opportunity to manage the function keys (on Lenovo ThinkPad x120e, Windows 7), i find many function keys handy, but some of them i hardly ever use (and would like to set some other commands on them instead) or, which is more important, some of them lie too close to combiations i often use and press sometimes accidentally:For example, MS-Office key combiation to save a document is "Shift+F12", and when i type very fast sometimes i accidentally press "Fn+F12" instead of "Shift+F12" and send my netbook into the hibernation mode, which wouldn't be so bad if it would take a couple of seconds to go back, but it takes 45 seconds to go into the hibernation mode and 45 seconds to go back, so every time this happens i loose 1,5 minutes of my work, which is very very bad sometimes. So, i was thinking, i don't use use hibernation mode often enough to have it on function keys, AND it interferes with my work, therefore it would be a good idea to remove the hibernation command from this key combination. Is it possible? It must be. There must be some sort of software, some kind of 'function key manager'. Is there? PS: Also i was looking for software which might allow me to set the switching languages on "CapsLock" instead of "Alt+Shift", maybe there is one which can do all that (setting anything to any key, generally)?

Hi everyone,
I just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS function keys commands go above a software's shortcut commands. So you can't press F5 for refresh and so forth.

After a lot of googling, it seemed it's impossible to switch Windows 8's features such as second screen (f10) off, or have them behind a Fn+F10 type commands.

I've tried already to achieve this with autohotkey but even with administrative rights etc, Windows 8 won't let me bypass or override the OS function keys features.

Please, could anyone help me? This is actually the main reason in considering to sell my brand new Lenovo laptop (which I like) and switch back to Apple.

I purchased HP Pavilion 15-n209TX Laptop this year and the functions keys were working properly. But, later on from 10th of May 2014, they are not working! I checked whether there was a software due to which it was happening, but, I didn't install any kind of software which can harm the functioning of the keys. I am really struggling with very low brightness. The latest thing I did was - windows update - which installed the following softwares Microsoft Silverlight  Also, I installed HP Quick fix.  Whenever I press F2 or F3, it just shows the slidebar (it doesn't go up and down though) and when I click on the top of the slidebar, nothing happens again. I also tried to go to the brightness option in the Windows Mobility Centre and tried to adjust the brightness - but nothing is happening.  Please help me out with this issue.

Answer:Function keys - F2 and F3 not working.

Hello and welcome to the HP Forums.  I would first make sure that the Intel Grpahics driver is a version that is HP supported. Intel Graphics Driver:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-129523-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4158&product=6622488&sw_lang=   If the issue still percists then attempt to reinstall the HP Wireless Button driver as it assists in controlling the function keys on the notebook. HP Wireless Button Driver:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-123643-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4158&product=6622488&sw_lang=    Let us know how how this works for you.  Thanks,

I have purchase several Lenovo ThinkCentre E73 desktop computers for use in a work enviroment. The keyboard supplied has the function keys default set to multimedia instead of the standard F1-F12 operation. This does not work here, I have searched multiple different ways both in the computer and here online and cannot find a way to change this to the standard default, I can use some other keyboard and the f keys work proplerly. How can I fix this?

Answer:E73 function keys need to be swapped

Do not worry about this, I kept hunting and finally found something close that I used as a guide to hunt in the computer and found a place to fix. I thought that in 4 hours I would have had some kind of a response but I guees no one is interested in helping a person out.

Answer:Fix for function keys of VAIO

I've requested that this new thread be merged with your other thread and that your other thread be reopened, since it involves the same display issue.

----------------------------------------------------------

Here is the support site for the Sony VAIO VGN-NR260E laptop.

If you click the "Manuals, Specs & Warranty" tab, there is a link to the on-line user's guide.

It's in PDF format, so you need to have Adobe Reader or some other PDF reader installed in order to open and view it.

Page 27 provides the list of the function keys.

Pressing Fn + F6 increases the display brightness.

Pressing Fn + F5 decreases the display brightness.

This is an ASUS Netbook with AMD processor running Win 7. It has ran fine for a long time. I connectyed to a unsecured network and since the I have lost the use of my function keys. I can no longer disable the keypad, adjust volume, Mute, and everything else that used to work with the function key. The "hour glass" icon is always present by the nav cursor like something is downloading.

Anybody got a clue?

Answer:Function Keys not working

Hi sudsy,

Did you try going to the Asus support site and reinstalling the function keys drivers? Posting the complete model would also help.

I've searched and searched, and I haven't found a yes or no answer to this question. It seems that nearly every site I visit thes days wants me to register with them before I can access the information I'm looking for. This is a serious pain in the butt when I just want to see if the site even has the information or program that I need. And it seems that every one of them wants you to type your e-mail address at least twice. So here's the question - is it possible to program a certain key combination to insert the e-mail address for me? For instance, ti would be so much simpler and less time consuming to simply press Ctrl + F12 to insert my e-mail address, rather than typing it out several times and then having to make sure there are no typos in any of the duplications ( I don't always tupe so giid).

Answer:Programming Function Keys?

My solution to this-open Notepad. Type your email address, save the notepad file to your desktop.
When you are asked for your email address, open the file, copy then paste the address.

My backlight function keys don't always work. More often than not, they don't work, they simply do nothing. Moreover, if I try to manually change a setting in the power options, it doesn't change anything. I contacted HP via the online chat support, but they were less than helpful. The chat support agent I talked to clearly didn't know what they were doing. They suggested I reinstall all the ACPI drivers, update BIOS and update my video card driver....My ACPI drivers are all reinstalled recently (and really only one of them should matter), the BIOS was updated a week ago and my video card drivers are up to date according to device manager. The worst part of my experience is yet to come. The technician doubted my information and didn't want to trust that I knew what I was talking about, because they wanted me to open up things like msinfo32 and check my BIOS was up-to-date. Is it too much that I know something (I'm currently in a CS major so I know what I'm doing). They finally suggested I reformat the laptop (I have an HP Envy 17). I don't want to reformat and I don't know what else exactly to do. This isn't the first time chat support has been unsatisfactory but I know the keys sometimes work, suggesting the keys aren't broken and the software isn't completely messed up either. I am sure I don't need to reformat so here I am asking for some help. Thanks.

Answer:Dim function keys not working

The online chat seems doing right by checking video driver, ACPI and BIOS.If one of those components was not right, the brightness control (fn+f7/f8) will not function properly. Since they dont know what you or other software have done, the easy way is to recommend you to do HP system recovery.HP system Recovery with factory installed feature will determine either you have software or hardware issue easily. If the recovery dont help then 100% you have hardware issue. My suggestion is to follow what HP support steps.

I'm at a bit of a quandary.  I have done this several times and something always happens.  After I open Access IBM and Configure, I map my right alt key to function as the windows key.  It works for a while and then suddenly I lose that functionality and have to reset it.  Does anyone know what is happening?  I am running XP on my Thinkpad T42. TJO
