Is my trackpoint broken?

Question: Is my trackpoint broken?

Hi All,Could someone help me to identify if my trackpoint on the T420S is broken? The images are here,http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7643/fig1k.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/199/fig2h.jpg In the first image, the red trackpoint can easily come out of the fixture on the keyboard. If I take out the red cap, there is a black thing as shown in second image located on key "G." I try to jam it into the fixture, but did not work out.Should this black thing need to always stay in the fixture? Is it just be glued to the fixture?Should I ask Lenovo for a service? Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Is my trackpoint broken?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Is my trackpoint broken?

The images don't work, however, I think I understand. The Trackpoint is a red rubber cap that just fits on a black plastic post between the G, H, and B keys. It lifts right off of the black plastic post. The post is a permanent part of the keyboard. The "eraser" head is user replaceable when necessary. The underside of the Trackpoint "eraser" is hollowed out to fit over the black post. It is snug, but does not require "jamming." When in place, does it work?

I reccently bought a T61p with Vista. I am a double arm amputee. I type with a prosthetic hook. I'm a big Thinkpad fan. This is  my third Thinkpad. One of the best features of the Thinkpad is the Trackpoint. The touchpads don't work with a prosthetic hook, which is why the Trackpoint is so valuable to me. The problem I'm experiencing is that the Press-to-select feature with Enable Dragging dosn't seem to work on my new T61p. I'm thinking it's a problem with the Vista drivers as my older T41 with XP using this fearure works. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Trackpoint Press-to-select Enable Dragging broken

I have had the same problem trying to disable press to select on a T60 with XP.  Fn-F8 should give access to all the properties of the trackpoint however I have discovered that you have to have both the trackpoint and the ultranav enabled in your bios - for some reason without the ultranav enabled it does not show all of the trackpoint features.Jon

The middle trackpoint button of my keyboard stopped to work (it has to be pressed very hard). I took picture of it showing what exactly was broken.   Notice that the black plastic part got separated from the base metal plate causing the middle button stopped to work.I just want to share it because it might be a quality issue. I contacted local Lenovo service and got a new keyboard replacement. Unfortunately it is different (compatible) part number. The new keyboard 45N2219 has much more soft feel than the old one 45N2149

In a rushed situation, when removing the laptop keyboard to clean, I pulled off the middle button above the trackpad, in doing so breaking it. My question is simple. Is it possible to buy a replacement of just that button or would I need to buy a new keyboard/get it serviced.

Answer:E320 trackpoint scroll button broken. Is it at all possible to get a replacement?

how did you break the trackpoint button? There is a piece you can break off under the red cap, which you can put back.Lenovo don't sell the scroll button separately (unless you are talking about the red cap).

Pardon me if this is too much of a software question, but yeah, I'm trying out Firefox 6, and while the browser seems less crashy, I can no longer side scroll by holding the middle mouse button and using the Trackpoint. It's a big deal for me. Scrolling with the Trackpoint is basically my favorite feature; to me, it feels even more convenient than a touch screen. Any one else notice this issue, or know how to solve it?

Answer:Side scrolling via Trackpoint broken in Firefox 6 [Thinkpad X220]

It works for me (Firefox 6.0.2). Try updating your UltraNav driver from the Lenovo support page. The latest is fairly new, dated August 23.

I went here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-67853.html#mouse to download the drivers for the mouse for Vista 32bit. The problem is, the link will only give me the 64bit downloads. Does anyone know where I can get the right download? Thanks

Answer:T61p Mouse/Trackpoint Vista 32 drivers download link broken

Hi xahrepap, and welcome to the Lenovo Community! That's a bad link on the support site. I reported it through the Lenovo Support & downloads Site Feedback page.  The 32-bit download is here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-66898  I found it by going to the driver matrix for one of the other systems listed as supported by the 64-bit driver.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

I have a PC with an asus P6X58D-E motherboard and an i7 processor.

It had not booted for a long time and I put it in storage.

Yesterday I decided I was going to get it going again. I bought a new 750w psu because I suspected that that was what was wrong with it. I replaced that and it still didn't work. I replaced the cr2032 bios battery and still no boot. I hit the clr cmos button and and booted and I got some life.

After setting some of the settings in the bios correctly and booting a few more times it was working fine. I upgraded to Windows 10 over night shut it down in the morning and went to work.

Upon returning from work it won't boot (it has been off the whole day. I have replaced the bios battery again and gone through yesterday's fixes, with no luck. What am I missing?

Answer:Broken, broken, fixed it, broken again... Boot issues

Answer:IE6 broken, Norton broken, other programs broken

Hi again,

I think I may have semi-repaired the problem. I re-installed Norton, and now it is no longer broken I think--the system tray icon is there and auto-protect works. No viruses were detected however. IEXPLORER.exe no longer runs with start-up, and it no longer re-appears as well, BUT internet explorer STILL does not work. Basically, I open it, the browser window opens, it tries to load, but then it just simply stops trying to load and effectively freezes. I have to close it through the task manager. No error message pops up, it's just a blank browser window.

I just tried installing IE7 to perhaps fix the problem, but IE7 would not install all the way so it's still broken. Here's an updated HJT log; thank you!

I have an Ideapad Y400, bought in December 2012, shipped with Windows 8. It recently malfunctioned after attempting to install Ubuntu as a secondary OS. It was very difficult to get Ubuntu installed because UEFI and Secure Boot were really trying to prevent it, but I finally got it installed and both operating systems worked for about 24 hours. Then, Ubuntu failed to start. Repeatedly. So I started Windows and it seemed like it was still working, except that occassionally when I tried to type, the keyboard would type a bunch of keys I hadn't hit and then stop responding for about 30 seconds. After that, it would work again for a little while.I ran OneKey Recovery to attempt to fix this, wiping my hard drive and reinstalling Windows 8 from scratch. Still didn't fix it. It actually glitched out once while I was still setting up my Windows profile, before it had even booted for the first time.So then I sent my laptop to Lenovo and, a week later, they sent it back with a new keyboard (despite me telling them that probably wasn't the problem). It worked for the next couple days, but as of today, it has started glitching again, a lot. I don't want to send my laptop to Lenovo again because I need it for the class I'm taking. Also, when they sent it back the first time they didn't even put it back together right. The back panel wasn't all the way in, and the panel underneath that was actually bent so that one of its tabs was sticking out the side of my laptop instead of being inside.... Read more

Answer:Ideapad Y400 keyboard broken after installing Ubuntu. Sent it in, Lenovo sent it back still broken.

Found a thread discussing this: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Ideapad-Y400-keyboard-auto-typing-and-out-o... Turns out, Y400s have a defect. If you enable 'Always On USB' in the BIOS / UEFI menu, it messes up your keyboard. I turned this on when I was trying to get my computer to recognize a boot USB. I'm surprised Lenovo's tech support is not already aware of this. I talked to about a dozen Lenovo employees, including a supervisor and a representative from customer relations, and nobody suggested that it might relate to my BIOS settings.

If you think this story is too long, please jump to the end for the executive summary. I bought a Thinkpad Yoga 15 a little over a year ago. I live in Belgium, but close to the Netherlands and Germany border. I bought my laptop in Germany as it was the only place in a 200 km radius that had the laptop on display. After slightly more than a year, the middle part of the power connector on the machine broke. Not because of a fall or something else, just daily use. The machine itself basically moves from the downstairs desk to the upstairs desk, so the only thing that happens that the power cord is removed and reinserted at its new station. This is covered under European Warranty Law, but as I had a 3YR NBD Warranty Extension, I expected this to be fixed without problems. I created a ticket through the (rather archaic) ticketinterface, and expected to be contacted the next day. However, it took 7 days for an IBM Global Services employee, to whom Lenovo apparently outsourced their technical support, to contact me. I was asked to provide some photographs of the problem and to e-mail them to the support person ? he neglected to provide an e-mail address. The ticket system does not support attachments. As a workaround, I uploaded the pictures to my Google Drive and put the link in the ticket tool. This was not seen by the support person, who had told me that a technician would stop by the next day. I made sure there was someone home, but no technician showed up. This was, it turned... Read more

Hi there - I have an Aspire V5 touchscreen - when I went to close the lid, the screen cracked and I spotted that the left hinge has come apart (risen and cracked the screen). Now the laptop wont work (touch screen is flashing, mouse doesnt work - exactly the same issue as the other posts on this forum). I see on this forum and google search that this is fairly common with Acer laptops (going back to 2010) and wondering why this wasnt fixed. Has there been a recall on this, does anyone know?  I see from a google search that HP fixed a design flaw on their laptops to stop this from happening once it was reported, several years ago (2008) (I wish I had known about this problem before I purchased). If you google that you'll get the information. I've only had my laptop a couple of years. I take excellent care of my laptops, and never had this issue. (I dont travel with it, and dont close the lid often - it sits stationary on my desk and is only 2 years old).   I've sent emails out to my friends working in technology this afternoon - and so far no one has ever had this issue although no one has Acer.  Its a huge inconvenience as I use this laptop for work.  So I'm just waiting to hear back from Acer.Any suggestions on getting this fixed or replaced asap?

Answer:Which is better for spareparts for a T410: broken T400 or broken T410i ?

If you need spare parts for T410, then T410i is the obvious candidate. Since they are T410 with lower spec CPU, etc. So most of the parts on the T410i and T410 are interchangeable. T400 is an older generation laptop, there is not much from it that you can use in the T410.

hello,

my situation:

I have a Compaq V6000 notebook. Several months ago it started to only charge when I placed the power cord in the right position. It keeps getting harder to find the right position. I was told that I might have a broken power socket or broken solder connection from the socket to the mobo. So I opened it up. The power socket looks normal to me, but then again, this is the first one I have ever seen.

My question:

what should I be looking for on the power board? What would I be able to notice if the solder connection was broken? and where should I look?

&

What would indicate that it is a broken power socket?

For the past 4 years my PC has begun to turn itself off automatically. When it restarts itself one of the fans does not start, which results in the computer not being able to show anything on the screen (the computer is on but the monitors do not receive any signal)
To fix this I have to readjust the Power Supply Unit's chord so it would be connected to the Motherboard from a different angle. This seems to fix the fault and the fan starts rotating again.
The fix lasts for a random amount of time varying between 10 minutes and 6 months, but it always at one point will turn itself off again.
Would buying a new power Supply Unit Fix this issue or may the motherboard be broken?

I have a win10 machine here that is getting worse and worse. Now it is off the web permanently, I can't connect at all.

It was intermittent and then progressively worse and now totally off.

It is supposed to be connecting via wifi3 whatever that means. The third wifi dongle I've put in since I've been hassling with it?

The machine is on an Asus H170 pro gamer board with an i3 cpu.

. How to shut down the board in such a case with a keypress or two? I have to hold the start button down for a long time.

. When it reports it cannot see any networks I can find no way to compell it to search for networks.

. Reported 'wifi2 not a valid IP configuraton' - what on earth does that signify?

JDhurst,

Welcome back to the forum!  I appreciate your "open letter" here, but have to admit I am a bit puzzled given your long history with ThinkPads and knowledge of our channels and operations.

Have you contacted Lenovo support to have the system serviced?   You have noted all of your good faith efforts to resolve this yourself, and I know that you have a lot of technical skill from your time here in past and your long tenure at forum.thinkpads.com.   I'm just not clear if you have engaged our primary support & service channels to try to get these problems addressed?

If not, please give support a call and let's see if we can idenfy the hardware issues and take care of it through service.

If you have already gone through support and have a service history that you haven't shared here, then please send me a PM with your current contact information, the system model and serial number and any service case numbers you have and I'll help you with an escalation.

Great to hear from you again!

Best regards,

Mark

Answer:hp envy touchsmart 15 broken hinge/broken fan

@oliverfleek

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

I have an Asus P4R800-VM motherboard and an Xpertvision Geforce 6800GS 256mb video card. I have updated the motherboard BIOS so it is uptodate and I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers for my video card.My problem is since installing the video card most of my games which ran fine before installing the video card now freeze then crash. Only a few weeks ago I installed a new harddrive and freshly installed WindowsXP SP2.I have put my video card in a friends computer and installed the same Nvidia driver and some of my games on it and it appears to run without problems, I thought it must be a problem with my motherboard but I put my friends Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 in my computer and it runs fine!So I don't know if the problem is with the motherboard or the videocard. Can someone tell me where my problem lyes, I don't want to go out and buy a new motherboard, etc to find out that it is the videocard thats to blame. I dont understand why it runs fine on my friends computer but not mine and why the 6800GS wont work on mine but the FX 5200 will!?Many thanks in advanceGordon

Answer:Motherboard broken or video card broken??

If the 5200 runs in the same slot then it sounds like you have isolated the problem to the card. Keep in mind that the latest drivers may not necessarily be the best.

Question: Trackpoint cap

I'm not sure if this is the place I'm supposed to post this. I absolutely hate the trackpoint when I type.  I type quite fast and I hit the trackpoint every once in a while -- but this is enough to really get on my nerves.  It's absolutely distracting.  Imagine typing out your thoughts then all of a sudden you hit the thing, get distracted, then irritated, and your thoughts gone.  ThinkPads are supposed to help you think.  The trackpoint unfortunately doesnt...  Are there a replacement tips that's depressed enough (and maybe colored black...) so that I dont hit it accidentally when I type?  Removing the tip works fine -- but it looks so ugly without it (makes it look like i'm using a broken equipment). Oh and I dont mind if the replacement cap will render the trackpoint unusable.  I just need it low enough so I dont accidentally hit it.

Answer:Trackpoint cap

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/vlar-443ltu.html

these are the three different types of trackpoint caps. You might get lucky with the first type and there is no black trackpoint caps produced by Lenovo.

You can disable the trackpoint by pressing Fn + F8 in windows and then select trackpad only. You can also disable trackpoint from BIOS menu.

Question: Trackpoint gone...

I did the usual "Windows update" this morning. After the installation had completed I noticed that my Trackpoint has "disappeared"! There is no reaction whatsoever when pressing the red dot and I can't control the mouse with it any more. I then checked in the control panel (no trace) and then had to learn, that it doesn't even exist in the device manager, either. I then rebooted, no change. I then even powered off and reboot from power off again, still no trackpoint! And after I downloaded the trackpoint driver from the Lenovo drivers download site and wanted to (re-)install the driver, I got an error message "this driver can not be installed on non-trackpoint systems". ?!? What? What the %@[email protected]#*%?  Where has my trackpoint gone??? How come, that it has completely disappeared? How do I get this thing working again? Edited: I later noticed, that a part of that Windows Update apparently was a new "Wacom Two Finger Touch" driver. Might that have to do with my disappeared Trackpoint? Michael PS.: Boy - is this annoying to have to work without Trackpoint!

Answer:Trackpoint gone...

I just had to learn that there is a Fn-key (F8) that allows to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad. I must have accidentally operated that button without noticing (in fact, I hadn't even known before that there IS such an option...).Its setting was on "Touchpad only". After re-enabling the trackpoint there everything came back to normal. Wheew. What a relieve! :-) And it (most probably) had nothing to do with the Windows Update - just an unlucky conincidence! Michael

My PC started to turn off randomly with weird artifacts on screen, I was pretty sure it was the GPU's fault. My PC is about 2 years old and was not used for like a year as I was moving out. My dad wanted to take the PC and drive it all the way to our new place and the road was pretty bumpy, so I thought that it might've caused the problem. PCIe slot was weak, it didn't hold GPU well, so I think that the slot is broken not GPU.
What do you think?
My specs:
1. Intel Core i7-3770 3,4 Ghx
2. NVIDIA GTX 780
3. 8 GB Ram
4. Foxconn H77M Motherboard

Answer:Broken GPU or Broken PCIe slot?

Your motherboard has two PCI slots, and if you believe the PCIe slot is defective, you can buy an adapter that plugs into one of the PCI slots.
Here's one.

OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

After just a few months of usage, my W510's TrackPoint cap came loose. I ordered a three-part TrackPoint cap collection on eBay. Alas, the caps don't fit.

No surprise if you look at this photo of a non-W-series keyboard with the cap removed. The TrackPoint post in my W-series ThinkPad is yellow rather than black and significantly smaller:

Link to picture

Also, the W-series is prominently absent from the list of supported models in Lenovo's specs of the replacement caps.

Anyone know if replacement caps for the W-series are available?

Also, how would I attach the cap? Just pushing it back didn't really do it for my original cap, it kept coming loose.

Hi beickus,It is in my standpoint but you don't have to push it hard to test it's limits, play it gently and use soft hands to use it. A simple touch works best, you don't really have to rest your finger on it. Hope it helps.

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.

E420S, Cannot get either to work. Cannot enable trackpoint or touchpad in UltraNav.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad

Hi, ezedoh

The first thing I would recommend is the removal of the UltraNav driver from the system. This is best accomplished by using an external mouse to navigate the system. To uninstall the UltraNav driver, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver for controlling the mouse. This should reinstate the touchpad to working order. If not, then continue using an external mouse for now.

Once the UltraNav driver has been removed, I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Trackpoint problem

First of all, sorry if this questions been asked and answered. I've been searching off an on for several weeks for any online help to a trackpoint annoyance I've been having with no luck. I'm on a T61p running XP. (I upgraded the stock Vista, following an online guide). I have the Ultranav utility installed (I can see and change the options for the trackpoint/touchpad in the mouse control panel). Both the trackpoint and touchpad work. However, every once in a while the trackpoint just becomes totally unresponsive and the mouse pointer refuses to respond or move. For like 3-4 seconds. What's odd is that when this happens, the touchpad still works. (I'm trying to move or scroll with the trackpoint / topmost scroll button+trackpoint with now response, but use other finger to test touchpad and that responds.) It's really odd and really annoying. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice? Thanks!

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

Hello, Got x120e the other day and I have one question: This is my first Thinkpad (and first time witha trackpoint) - the trackpoint moves kind of choppy. It's not smooth movements like with the trackpad, as if it's missing frames or something. It's still perfectly useable but seems odd. Is this normal?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

No, it's not normal.  Mine moves as smooth as the touchpad (if not smoother) and responds to how much I move the stick.  Have you looked into the UltraNav Properties field of the trackpoint?  I'll leave this up to the experts to help you here.  This is my first Lenovo product too. But I'll like to comment that I wish the trackpoint would be at positions where your fingers will be while holding the machine.  The middle position works fine for a bigger laptop, but this is an ultraportable. Remember the IBM PalmTopPC110?  http://www.komotch2.com/tps/pt110.htm And the Toshiba Libretto:  http://www.silverace.com/libretto/libretto100j.jpg Some models' trackpoints are even located at behind the screen (i.e. on the lid).PalmTopPC110

For the past week or two it seems that the mouse clicks on its own on my T420. This is in TrackPoint only mode (TouchPad disabled) with press to select disabled. This issue is reproducible as it generally happens right after a normal click or unclick. For example, if I highlight text in a word processor by clicking and dragging my cursor over the text when I release the button the system registers a phantom click within the next second or so. I also have noticed these phantom clicks after middle clickling. Does this sound like a possible driver issue or should I go ahead and call to have a tech come out and replace parts?

Answer:TrackPoint clicks on its own

@nibs,Try uninstalling UltraNav, reboot the laptop then install it back and see if it helps. If problem persist then I guess its time to contact the techs.

I have a T60 laptop (purchased Jun 2006) which works great except for the trackpoint.  For the last few months, the trackpoint has not been working.  The touchpad works. Here are the steps I took to troubleshoot - 1.  Updated Ultra NAV driver and Utility software (the latest from lenovo website).  Actually un-installed old version and      re-installed new version2.  Updated the BIOS to the newer version and ensured that Trackpoint/NAV is set to enabled in BIOS3.  Replaced the keyboard (assumed it was a hardware problem).  During replacement, I made sure it was properly      seated to rule out a loose connection.4.  The motherboard was replaced last year (due to a another problem) so I assume it may not be the source of problem I have searched this and other websites but am out of luck.  Appreciate if any one can provide more leads/ideas to fix this.  I am not sure if this is software related. Thanks

yeah i have that problem, and i have a friend with the same problem. its just because the rubber doesnt stay seated right on the piece is sitting on, if you push on it too hard. thats my guess, but i could be wrong. i notice if i dont push on the rubber part very hard it keeps that from happening. for some reason i always push straight down on the rubber piece and thats when it does it the most.

From what I have been able to find I believe that this has something to do with the trackpoint.
We use a wireless mouse with this so do not need the track point. Can someone please tell me how to disable the trackpoint?
Thanks!!!

I currently am facing a similar issue. In the BIOS, both my trackpoint and touchpad is detected and set to Automatic.
If I remove the entire palm rest and touchpad panel, I'm able to get the trackpoint to work, however once the touchpad is connected, the trackpoint just stops working.

I tried to enable it on the Ultranav program but it just doesn't work.

I tried the mouse properties and the trackpoint function is greyed out as shown below.

Link to image 1

When I went into the device manager, the trackpoint is not detected.

I tried installing all versions of Ultranav, tried BIOS updates, tried cleaning the connectors, and still can't get the trackpoint to work together with the touchpad.

Any advice to this issue is greatly appreciated.

Answer:T61 - can't enable TrackPoint

Hi Dyna, Welcome to the forum. When you say Trackpoint doesn't work, do you mean:1. That trackpoint itself is not workingor 2. The left click, right click and scroll buttons associated with the trackpoint doesn't work. ========Also, you did not mention whether your trackpad works or not. Finally, what happens when you disable the trackpad in the BIOS menu? Does that affect your trackpoint and associated buttons' behaviours?

Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

Is there any way to use the trackpoint on Lenovo computers as a joystick?  I.e. a device that would be useful for a flight simulator?  Essentially, it wouldn't be moving the mouse along a line based on the direction you're pushing it in with a speed based on your finger pressure,  but rather moving the mouse to a stationary position on the screen based on the direction and pressure you're pushing on it with.

At the top next to 'Pointing Options', click 'Advanced'
In the 'General' tab, you will see 'TrackPoint pointing speed', adjust the slider,

Depending on which Ultranav version you have installed the steps may be slightly different, but they should be roughly the same.

Now that the 5th gen Thinkpad is here, the decline of the trackpoint becomes ever clearer.  Frankly, most of us would not be buying Thinkpads if they didn't have the trackpoint.  That's the X1's main advantage.  But Lenovo keeps making it worse.  First, the trackpoint caps that will fit the gen 4 and 5 come in only one, unpopular, variant and you can't get the soft rim version.  But more importantly, Lenovo keeps on degrading the software control of the trackpoint.  It used to be that you could adjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint, making it more or less stiff.  Even the softest setting was inadequate but it was something.  In the 5gen there is no option to change the stiffness or responsiveness of the trackpoint's movements at all.  Lenovo: hear your customers!! Please make the trackpoint MORE not less adjustable.

Answer:trackpoint did't work

Hi Oshri,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with track point not working in your Lenovo T410 laptop
The Fn-key (F8) allows the to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad.

If the trackpoint is no longer working, this may be a good option to check before investigating device manager, updating / reinstalling trackpoint drivers or rebooting as discussed above.

Pressing Fn-F8 brings up the ultranav menu and allows the user to cycle through different trackpoint and touchpad configuration options.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

I have an odd problem.  When I bootup to the login screen, the mouse is disabled.  I can use the keyboard just fine, but I can't move the mouse at all.  It's more of an annoyance than anything, but if anyone knows how to enable the mouse at startup, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your help,--sam

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

I know I just posted a thread, but I figured that issue is global enough to warranty its own. But this one seems to be specific to me.I'm a new Thinkpad (and trackpoint) user, and the trackpoint is very choppy for me. It seems to skip frames. For example, making a circular motion with the trackpad results in a continuous, smooth motion. But not so with the trackpoint. It seems to be micro-jumping (or skipping frames as I prefer to call it). This is easily noticeable when holding down the middle trackpoint button and attempting to scroll a page. The page does not scroll smoothly at all (has nothing to do with smooth scrolling, that's something else and not what I'm talking about). Now this isn't just with this X220. Before the X220 I briefly owned a x120e that had this EXACT same problem. I asked about it and people told me that is not normal. So I returned it and got this X220, but it's the same problem. The weird thing is that while this choppiness is present in Windows, it was just fine during the Windows install process. I've tried: disabling the trackpad, reducing/increasing trapoint sensetivity, updating drivers, removing drivers and reinstalling, bumping the priority of the driver to high. None helped. What are the chances I'd receive two machines with the same problem?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

Disabling the trackpad from the BIOS fixed the issue it seems (its definitely much smoother). Diasbling it within Windows did not help. If I recall correctly disabling the trackpad in the x120e from the BIOS was not an option. Too bad. But odd that others do not have this problem. Oh and my palm was not resting on the trackpad

This is just a minor inconvenience, but I was just curious: Does anyone know how to change the settings to make the mouse the same speed as the trackpoint? I just got a new mouse with 1200dpi and with the mouse sensitivity at about halfway, they both vary in speed. I hate having to switch it every time I move away from my desk. The mouse I had before worked fine (it was a cheap mouse).

by the way, i'm using vista ultimate 64 on an IBM x60 tablet pc.

Hi, I encounter the following issues with my Thinkpad T430s:- sometimes the mouse pointer starts moving on its on, always towards the same direction and always at the same speed. Rebooting temporarily resolves the issue until it occurs again. Reducing the sensitivity in the driver software does not have any impact. Pressing the trackpoint and letting go does nothing to stop it. - the left mouse button acts like a weird combination of a left click + some function that brings up context menus, if available (e.g. on desktop). This happens using the trackpoint, touchpad and sometimes even when using an external mouse. - Right mouse button does not function at all. No matter what function is assigned to it in the driver software, it does not work. External mouse works. All this ONLY happens if the trackpoint is ENABLED in BIOS. If I disabled the trackpoint in the BIOS, touchpad and all mouse buttons work fine. I tried Windows 10 and Windows 7. The problems occur under both operating systems using different driver software. Therefore, I do believe this to be a hardware issue. Anyone has experienced this issues and knows a good way to fix it? Thanks in advance!

I cannot be sure without seeing it, but my guess is that you need a keyboard

Hiseems T460s (20F9) is wors than my previous laptop T420s, I can't move it so freely as before. At certain point the mouse cursor just stops moving and have to use force with a finger to make it move anywhere. I noticed the cap hole is now much smaller than f.ex. T420s, perhaps this is the reason for it. I found a link on the net to make the movement possible better;http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/thinkpad-t460s-trackpoint-mod.790347/In addition, previously there came several Caps with the laptop, now there is not a single extra one. So I don't dare to try the fix above link before I have at least one extra cap in case something goes wrong. So the question is what is the product code for the Thinkpad T460s Trackpoint Cap collection? I tried to look in the net, hard to find.  I used Lenovoguickpick and the possible code might be this;ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set (Part # 4XH0L55146)Then again googling that with amazon produces no results so can't get those anywhere. Any help appreciated, Thank You.

Answer:Thinkpad T460s TrackPoint Cap

According to Lenovo Japan, these new Super Low Profile caps are going to be available in May.

I'm in the market for a new notebook.  As a long time ThinkPad user, I have to say the new trackpoint set up bothers me.  I know they said in the blogs Windows 8 users deserve a better touch pad, but I would ask don't us long time ThinkPad users, who've supported the brand for years, deserve something too, but what do I know. Anyway, the T440s and T440p are on my short list of new laptops.  Finally, a 14" ThinkPad with a good screen, but I've heard the new integrated pointstick buttons are noisy and I hate noisy buttons.  It's one of the reasons I've always had ThinkPads at the top of my list - silky smooth buttons.  Is there any consensus on how well the new setup works or anything I should know before buying?  I live no where near any place I could see one in person to judge for myself.  I'm not going through the hassle of buying one and having to return it, regardless of the restocking fee.  Thanks for any help.

Hi,   I bought an X61 (type: 7673-BE9) last month. Now I have met a trackpoint issue. It will not work at any time: no response to left and right buttons, no response to the red stick. If I reboot the system, it maybe works or doesn't. In the later case,  I noticed that there was a yellow exclamation mark before trackpoint in the hardware management.   I have tried to reinstall the trackpoint driver(4.62), but it was helpless. Here's my system information:    OS:    Windows XP sp2    BIOS: 2.07    Trackpoint Driver Version: 4.62   Would anyone please help me? Answer:X61 trackpoint doesn't work

Hi, Im experiencing exactly the same Problems on my X61. I was using Windows Vista for three month and had no problems at all. The strange mouse behaviour just started after installing Windows XP. The funny thing is that the mouse stops working some seconds after the GUI boot. So i tried to kill all of the trackpoint tasks running, but I didnt find any task being responsible for this behaviour. My next try will be to stop some drivers and see if I can find the problem here.Did you find any other solution?Best regards, dkirsten

I have a t430 2342CTO with the latest ultranav drivers installed. I have seen screenshots of older versions of the driver where you can select smooth scrolling for the trackpoint. I was wondering if there is any way to enable this behavior in the current driver. Also, is there any way I can change the amount of lines scrolled by the trackpoint? Changing the windows setting only seems to affect the touchpad, not the trackpoint. Perhaps there is a registry setting or something?

Answer:Trackpoint smooth scrolling

Hi ben_jminw,

You should be able to change those settings under control panel > mousepad > unltranav.

If you're using this driver then try using a previous version.

I have a Lenovo T420s.  I bought it in May 2011 so it came with the Touchpad/Trackpoint driver version 15.2.14.0 (6hgx35ww.zip), which is the one also known for its massive memory leak. In any case, with that driver I am able to use the Trackpoint to navigate somewhere on the screen and immediately use the Touchpad if necessary. I do that a lot - I use the Trackpoint to quickly get somewhere on the screen, and then switch to the Touchpad for finer navigation (e.g. to look for something in Explorer, click on a link somewhere, etc). Every version since that verison has not worked the same.  I am now using 15.3.16.1 which doesn't have any memory leaks.  As soon as I touch the Trackpoint, the Touchpad becomes unresponsive to touch for about 1.5 seconds.  Try it.  Put your left pointer finger on the Trackpoint and move the mouse around.  Right as you lift your finger, use your right pointer finger on the Touchpad and see if it responds. It doesn't - you have to lift your finger and put it down again for it to register your touch.  Previously it would register your finger touch on the Touchpad right away. I'm almost tempted to switch back and deal with the memory leaks!  It makes such a difference with speed of navigation. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I was testing out the other trackpoints that came with my T400 the other day, and when I took one of them off, the black piece that fits the track point cap onto the little nub in keyboard came with it. When I tried to pry it loose it went flying off, bounced twice, and like all small, critical pieces do when they hit the floor, disappeared. I haven't been able to find it, and without it the caps won't fit. I've looked around but it seems nobody offers a replacement. They just have the caps. Apparently I can't even contact customer support to ask if they have a replacement, since my laptop isn't in warranty, so I'm asking here instead.

Answer:Replacement trackpoint part?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

If I'm not wrong, that's part of the keyboard and it doesn't come loose unless it's broken. You'll need to replace the entire keyboard if you want to use the trackpoint again, sorry!

I had an old IBM keyboard with broken trackpoint holder, wasn't able to fix it.

You know that rubber stick between the G and H keys on the new Carbon X1..? How do I replace it? In the old Thinkpads you could just yank it out, but with the X1, it seems to be stuck. Mine is working fine, I just want to replace it with the cat's tongue/classic type of eraser head. Would this be safe to do or might it scratch/dent the screen?

Been bumbling along quite happily with my ThinkPad 600/2645/45U running on 98SE for quite a while. It's my in-car system.Only a slight niggle. With the trackpoint device, there are three buttons to represent the three mouse buttons. I would like to configure the (currently non-functioning) third button to be the 'double-click' button. However, search as I may, I cannot find a meaningful driver that will allow me to do this. I have found (I hope) a 'contact' facility to ask IBM, but I'm not 100% certain that I found the right one or that I will get a reply.Has any nice person out there had the same 'problem' and found a driver?Chris

I am not sure any HP laptops still have a trackpoint. All Lenovo Thinkpads still have them. There is virtually no consumer demand for trackpoints, a huge majority prefers the touchpad. I still use the trackpoint on my Thinkpad, but also use the touchpad.

I want to report several issues with TrackPoint. Basic InfoLaptop: X1 carbon 3rd genModel: 20BT-CTO1WWOS: Windows 10 Pro (upgraded from Win 7 Pro)TouchPad driver: Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver ver. 19.0.17.2  Issue 1: TrackPoint does not work with MS Office 2016 (except Word).Mid button + TrackPoint cannot scroll horizontally in Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. Scrolling vertically works well.Horizontal scroll works well with Word 2016, Notepad, Microsft Edge, Firefox, etc.Horizontal scroll works well in Excel 2016 with ThinkPad mouse (model: MORFGOO) with mouse suite. Issue 2: TrackPoint calibrates even in mid button + TrackPoint mode.If you tilt TrackPoint steadily for a few seconds, it calibrates and takes it as new zero position. This is a correct behavior. If you hold mid button and tilt TrackPoint steadily (i.e. scrolling), it should never calibrate. This is another correct behavior which was seen with my previous ThinkPad notepads. However, my X1c TrackPoint calibrates even when mid button is held. After 0.5~1 seconds, the scroll stops. When releasing, the mouse pointer moves automatically. This is annoying. Issue 3: Mouse pointer changes size when mid button is pressed. The same as this post.  I use TrackPoint a lot with Excel and the above issues lower efficiency.I hope there will be new Synaptics driver to resolve the issues. btw, I'm not sure which is the best way to report bugs, because there are tooooooo many Lenovo and ThinkP... If you need to reinstall the Trackpoint driver for your unit, here is the link below: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4KMUYL Download and save this file to the desktop and the open the folder and run the setup.exe file You might also need the Trackpoint Accessibility Driver, which can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Z9QVD See if installing these two drivers will help you. If the drivers are installed correctly and you are still having problems with the trackpoint scrolling, it could possibly be a mechancial issue and the part would need replacement. Let me know if this helps you any. Mark

T40 Details:2373-92U I've been having this problem with my trackpoint and ultranav mice for quite some time - it seems that only the left button generates any response by the OS, and that response is most often a "right click."  The actual right button is unresponsive.  I've tried the option under "control panel -> mouse -> button configuration -> switch primary and secondary buttons"  whether checked or unchecked, the left button still has the same behavior.  Occasionally, the left button will stop working entirely within a window - apparently the best way to resolve this is to use the left button to click anywhere on the desktop: the context menu appears, and after using the left button to click on any item within the context window the left button will once again become responsive in all windows (although it will still act like the right button when clicking). External USB mice and Bluetooth mice do not have this problem - those mice respond properly to left/right clicks. My best guess is that the keyboard unit (08k4957 or 08k4986) needs to be replaced, however I'm hoping there's a more definitive test I can perform before shelling out the $$ for a new keyboard unit.  I say this because the ultranav mousepad also has the same problem and I see it plugs into a separate location within the laptop - is there another common component within the laptop that could cause common failure between the two built-in mice? Thank...
