T520 in ThinkPad Mini Dock does not show boot display DVI monitor

Question: T520 in ThinkPad Mini Dock does not show boot display DVI monitor

When my T520 is docked in a ThinkPad Mini Dock, I am unable to get the boot or bios displays to show on a DVI monitor attached to the Mini Dock. During a normal boot with the ThinkPad docked and lid closed, I can "blindly" enter the Hard Drive password and the T520 will boot normally and Windows uses the DVI monitor just fine. Going into the BIOS setup (T520 is docked but need to use the laptop screen) the Boot Display Device option only shows choices for "ThinkPad LCD" or "Analog (VGA)". There is no "Digital 1" or "Digital 2" choice as mentioned by the help text. My T520 is model 4239-CTO BIOS is level 1.21ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 is 4338-30U Thanks in advance for any tips on making this work.

Preferred Solution: T520 in ThinkPad Mini Dock does not show boot display DVI monitor

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

do you have the optimus nvidia model? if you do, then you have to switch to discrete only in the bios menu, to be able to see the boot up screen in your dvi attached screen.

I have dual monitors connected to my Mini Dock Plus Series 3. Every time I remove and reconnect my T520 laptop, it defaults back to a single monitor upon boot up and I have to manually start and extend my second monitor.  It works fine until I have to disconnect and reconnect the laptop again. Is there a way to set the default so it will boot using both monitors?

Answer:T520 defaults back to single monitor after connection to Mini Dock Plus Series 3

When you stop using the dock, are you doing a shutdown or has the laptop gone to sleep and possibly hibernated? It should work if you are using shutdown.

Dear all, would like to inquire if X220 will operate with two external monitor? I'm ok to close the lid of my X220.The 4337 docks support VGA and DVI, will both work together? What's working:- I have been using x220 screen with another external monitor through VGA connection.- Connecting Dell 2340L direct to VGA works with X220 screen, not with 2 external monitor. What's not working:- Recently got a Dell 2340L which contains only VGA and HDMI, which I thought HDMI would work with an adaptor (HDMI to DVI) port - no response although the Windows 7 detects external monitor display.

Hi, i had been a bit disappointed by the performance offered of the dedicated GPU/NVidia Optimus. By accident i discovered, the GPU provides MUCH more performance if a battery is plugged in! Let me describe my setup:Thinkpad T520 with a Quadro 4200M (NVidia Optimus setup) and a default 55+ battery, which i normally unplug while on dock. (Yes, the battery management is nice, but temperature increases the battery aging rate, too. My last laptop died before my batteries even reasonable weared out ..., however, back to topic).Docked but WITHOUT battery, i get poor framerates of about less than 30 fps while running a rather simple game on 1024x768px with least possible quality. High quality settings lead to about 10-15 fps.Now the interesting part: Docked and WITH battery, i get 120-130 fps by using the highest quality settings possible. I discovered  this behaviour on each game/benchmark i ran, and noticed the same results, not depending on the battery state while booting (plugged/unplugged). In fact, it can even be observed if i  plug in the battery while running a game/benchmark, the fps increase instantly. But things get even more interesting: If i do not use the dock and connect the AC power supply directly to the laptop itself, nothing described above happens! It just runs smooth and fast like desired, independent from the battery state. So i am curious: If you own the same hardware setup like me (T520 with NVidia Optimus and Mini Dock Seri... Read more

I want to use a ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (170W) [pn 433830U] at work and a Lenovo USB 2.0 Port Replicator with Digital Video [0A33942] at home.I did not have to install any drivers for the Mini Dock and it worked just fine driving an external monitor. After installing the driver for the Port Replicator, I could no longer drive the external monitor when attached to the mini dock or the VGA+ video port on the ThinkPad.I played with a lot of things to fix the situation and nothing worked. I even uninstalled the driver for the Port Replicator and still could not drive an external monitor. In fact the laptop did not even recognize that an external monitor was attached.Later I found using the Device Manager that the NVIDIA Qadro 1000M display adapter was disabled, proabably during installation of the Port Replicator driver. Once I enabled that, I could drive an external monitor again. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Will I be able to use the Port Replicator if I install the driver again?

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

I hooked the one Acer monitor directly to the monitor port, and it works perfectly.  I then hooked the other through a Triton SS2 Extreme UV200 External DVI/VGA Video Card as was recommended for me to do so.  The Triton has a USB plug which I then connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the docking station, and loaded the software.  Everything worked great but the 2nd monitor screen enlarges everything.  So I though I could just go into the control panel and adjust that monitors settings.  However, the system is only recognizing the monitor in the monitor port of the docking station.  In the connection directions, it says the 2nd monitor has to be connected to the other USB port that is not standard and is on the far left of the back of the dock with an emblem the has 2 "+" signs stacked on each other followed by a bold "D" (I think).  I have tried to see if there is an adapter to convert the standard USB to fit this other port, and no one has been able to help me.  Does anyone have any recommendations, idea's or knowledge of how to work through this?  Thanks.

Answer:Help with connecting dual monitors to the THinkPad Mini Dock 3 for my ThinkPad T 510

that is the Displayport, which can be converted to a DVI or VGA port using an appropriate adapter. But there is no USB adapter for the Displayport, as they use a different technology.

Hello,The laptop in question will not charge with the above mentioned dock when it previously did. If you shut down the mahcine and turn it back on when docked it works, but after this point if undocked and docked again it seems to lose it's ability to charge via the dock giving the "plugged in but not charging" message on the power system icon from the taskbar. As it stands the laptop can be charged by the AC port on the back and as mentioned when given a power cycle on the dock. The above issue happens on several docks with different power supplies. The laptop is no longer in warranty and it is possible to get this sent back and repaired (paying for the service) if that is an option. This is greatly inconvenient for the user affected and is causing disruption daily.

Do they make an upgrade half mini card for the Thinkpad T520? The installed mini card runs 2.4ghz, my wifi is running 5ghz. I can"t find one for the T520, everything else but. I guess this is one computer they must have made a trial run on and nobody bought them or is it considered in the 500 series?

Answer:PCI Half Mini Card upgrade for Thinkpad T520

Hello and welcome,

The T520 bill of materials includes a list of supported cards.  There appear to be some dual band cards in the list.

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/parts/PD009237?LinkTrack=Solr

Keep in mind that a card must be a supported model and have a Lenovo FRU number to pass the BIOS white list.

For example, a "vanilla" Intel 6205 won't pass the list but a 60Y3253 should.

Machine config: T520 4239 L65Fresh image of Windows 7 x64Loaded all windows patchs, Lenovo Drivers, 7x64 MS hotfixes from T520 listSeries III Dock, 1 or 2 Monitors connected with Displayport When Windows turns off the display and the monitors go to sleep, I can't "wake" the machine by moving mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard.  -If i catch it just before the monitors go to sleep I'm ok but that's just an FYI since you only have a few seconds. Sometimes I can open the lid on the laptop and the display is on there -other times it is also dead. When it's on, it's set and very low resolution.  I can rstart the machine and we're ok until the displays power down again. When that monitor is not on, I can only hold power until it shuts down. Neither option is very good. This is repeatable on two T520 machines with the same configuration on 3 different series 3 docking stations. So far I don't see the issue with DVI or VGA. Update -it would appear that this issue is limited to monitors connected to the the docking station with Display port cables. My best guess is that the cables pass the monitor state data back to the machine.  When they tell the machine "We're going to sleep", the docking station decides it's going to take a nap as well.  -so the keyboard/mouse doesn't respond and even when I open the lid, the docking station never quite recovers without a reboot.

Hello everyone, I just ordered a week ago a new Thinkpad W700 with the W700 Mini Dock 1.0 (43R8782) and I am still waiting anxiously to receive it. Today I have received an email from Lenovo telling me my order was modified and the Mini Dock was cancelled because of EOL (End Of Line?). I went back to the Lenovo Web site and I found the same Mini Dock still listed and available for ordering. I also found a new Mini Dock 2.0 (57Y4345) for the same price but the 170W power supply (41R4421) is not included. The power supply cost an additional 100$. Of course there is NO difference between the old model and the new one beside the fact that the power supply is not included anymore. Now I do understand Lenovo need to make some money somewhere, but isn't against the law to do something like this? I do think here in Quebec there is something called false representation or taking advantages of the customer? If the new docking station was alot cheaper I would probably bite the bullet and just order it, but this is crazy. Am I the only one here that think that there is a problem with this? Especially since I already placed my order in good faith and even when they tell me it's not available anymore it's still listed as available on the website? What can I do about this? Thanks for your thoughts. Alain HogueMontreal, Qc ------------------------Current Laptop: Thinkpad A31p, Pentium 4 - 2Ghz, 100GB HD, 2GB RAM, 1600x1200, Win XP S... ahogue,

Thanks for purchasing the W700....I do not think you will be disappointed.

To answer your question, there is a difference between the two versions of the Port Rep.

From the product description, there is the following line:

Supports ThinkPad 170-watt and 230-watt AC adapters

This version of the Port Rep will also support the new 230-watt power supply for the next generation of W700.  Since this Port Rep supports two different power supplies for two different generations of W700, you would use the AC adapter that came with your system.

One reason being....you would not want to dock your 170-watt W700 to a 230-watt power supplied Port Rep...it was not designed for that amount of current.

I'm not sure why the older Port Rep would still be available for purchase if you received an email stating it was End of Life.  Sounds to me like the sales website needs to be updated.  If you could, send me a PM with the contents of the email you received and I can make some inquiries.

I am having trouble finding out how to do something that SHOULD be simple to do, so any help here would be appreciated. I recently acquired a Lenovo T410 and a Mini dock Series 3 (4337). I wiped the machine and returned it to the way it was when it came from the factory. Now I want to use it in the dock at my desk and I have a problem. The whole idea of having the dock is to allow the laptop and dock to be 'out of the way' at the back corner of the desk and simply access it with an external keyboard; mouse; and LCD display. Ideally, when it is in use on my desk, I do not want to have to open up the display. Therein lies my problem. The external display is connected to the VGA connector on the mini-dock and when I start the laptop by pressing the power button on the mini-dock, NOTHING shows on the monitor. The external keyboard; Mouse and network connection all work just fine on the dock - my only problem is the display. I have to open up the display, wait for the login screen; press the Windows key - P combination to pop up the display "chooser'; select "Duplicate" and press enter before the external display will work. This is extremely inconvenient. Is there ANY way to have the display automatically come up on the external monitor when the machine boots up in the dock? I have owned several other machine/dock combinations, including ones by Toshiba; H-P; Gateway and Dell and have NEVER run into this type of problem before. Hi, welcome to the forum!

You have to access the Bios setup for this to work.
If I remember the T410 Bios correctly, there is the menu "Config". Pressing enter you will see the submenu "Display". There you can adjust the T410 to send image to Analog (VGA), Digital on Thinkpad and Digital on dock. Try Analog first. After you select it press F10 to save and reboot, see what happens.

I hope it solves your problem, please post back your results!

Hi I'm trying to figure out whether the mini dock 4337 supports triple display configurations. There seems to be confusing information in your documentation: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76617 - This page says that with Optimus enabled systems, triple display configurations are supported.http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-72871 - This page says "any two of the three video ports can be used simultaneously" Which one's correct? Or am I reading them wrong? My thinkpad T410 has Optimus enabled. Second question: Using a DVI cable to connect the mini doc to the external monitor doesn't work. In Ubuntu, it detects the monitor is connected, but cannot send the display (even if I have just ONE monitor connected - via the DVI cable).. Very frustrating. Please help RegardsManav

Answer:Thinkpad T410 and Mini dock 4337

The triple display includes the internal display, so it can support 2 external displays through the Mini Dock 4337. If you are using displayport, the DVI port is automatically disabled. Can you tell me a little bit about your LCD setup?

I can find no Lenovo documentation anywhere that explains how to use the two buttons, numbered1 and 2, in the upper left-hand corner of this docking station. Button 2 is the large, square, eject button. If I understand correctly, if I want to eject my Thinkpad (T500)from the dock, I first choose an eject command somewhere in software, then press this buttonto mechanically eject the computer from the dock. Correct? Button 1, just above Button 2, is a thin, rectangular, metal switch of the kind you'd use to engage anddisengage functions on an audio receiver. I have no idea how to use it or what it's for. Can someone explain?

Answer:Buttons 1 and 2 on ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock

The button that is listed as "1" is to send the command to undock the laptop from the dock. The button listed as "2" is the physical eject button.  These buttons work with the Lenovo Easy Eject software that is installed on the laptop.  To use the buttons, you simply press the button "1" and the light will flash for a moment then it will switch to button "2".  Once button "2" is lit, then you press it to eject. Hope this helps you.

Answer:ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock (250410U)+two LCD

Hi meng, Welcome to the Lenovo forum. You are correct, the X3100 GPU can display (only) two screens at a time. If you need more screens, you could use a USB-DVI converter like this one. Another member reports good results with it in this thread. Cheers,Frank

Hello all,  I just got a Thinkpad Mini Dock 3 with the USB 3.0 port. However, the dock port does not work with my W520 (which has USB 3.0 on it). The dock port does work with my X220 (yes, old school), however (which also has 3.0 port). So, the fault is not the dock, but some kind of issue between the W520 and the Mini Dock. I've uninstailled and reinstalled the 3.0 hub driver, updated drivers, and searched everywhere but cannot find a fix. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this issue? Thanks kindly,Dylan

My T510 does not have an eSATA port, so I purchased the Mini Dock Plus Series 3.  However, the eSATA port does not detect my external HDD. I have other PC's that detect the HDD on their eSATA ports just fine so I know it is not the HDD. The ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 information page indicates that the eSATA port is compatible with the T510. The laptop is running Windows 7 64-bit. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have just set up a new T500 with the Advanced Mini Dock. I am using a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. They are connected through one of the USB ports on the dock. The problem I am experiencing is the USB ports aren't working on the dock during start-up so I can not use my mouse and keyboard to unlock the computer. The Mini Dock "instructions" were less than helpful for trouble shooting. Am I doing something wrong, missing something or do I have a bad dock? If I plug my Logitech receiver directly into the computer I can unlock and start-up, then the ports work on the dock but that kind of defeats the purpose of having the dock.

I have a 2504 Advanced mini-dock in the office and it works fine.I've bought another 2504 FRU 41W6563 for home. It only seems to part work though. When you put the machine in the dock the power supply is detected from the mini-dock, but nothing else seems to work, especially the USB ports, even if I shutdown Windows, and reboot. With the switch in the unlocked position, there is no green light, when you switch it to locked, the red light comes on.I'm confused if this is the right mini-dock - Can anyone help or suggest anything? My Thinkpad is a T61, 7659-A71

HiI don't have a solution, but a similar problem. I wish there was some real documentation for this piece of hardware.I am using the advanced mini-dock with my new T61 (14.1" with the integrated graphics card) and it's all hit-and-miss.Undocking the laptop seems to provide no problems, but getting it to dock really is hit and miss. More often than not it doesn't seem to work. The display setting won't switch, and I can't get to the display manager or if I can it shows only the default setting as the choice. Most of the time the display on my T61 is blank too.I have it set up so that it's supposed to switch to the external DVI monitor at 1280x1024. When it works it work beautifully, but the fact that it doesn't makes me use the docking station less oftenthat I wouldAre there some do's and don'ts or a FAQ regaring the use of the docking station? I can't tell when it's on or off (or if it even does something). Ie when the T61 isn't docked, I don't see anything if I push the power button on the dock.I really like the idea of the docking station, I just wish it would work better for me.Does the system have to be up and running if it's docked? I'm using a T430s and a mini dock plus series 3. This is the dock with the dual DVI, dual DisplayPort, 1x VGA. I do not use the laptop's built-in screen; just the 2 external monitors. Intel HD4000 graphic chip and Nvidia Optimus/ I previously had 2 20" monitors with a 1680x1050 resolution using DVI-to-DVI. They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. The laptop is not recognizing the second monitor. I have tried:dual display port (dock side) to mini display port (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizeddual dvi (dock side) to HDMI (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizedI ruled out monitor and cable problems by swapping...each by itself works fine. Looking up specs, I believe this resolution should be supported by DP or DVI. Can anybody confirm that this is a supported config? Any ideas what is wrong? UPDATE - I did try 1 DP/mDP and 1 DVI/HDMI: this does work. However, its not an ideal solution because it would interfere with the monitors ports which I want to use for a second PC. UPDATE 2 - OK, now I am beyond aggrivated. I also have a support ticket w/ Lenovo where they suggested switching to Integrated Graphics only in the BIOS. I tried that, no luck. After changing that setting back, i tried to get my 1 DP / 1 DVI working, but now it would not recognize dual monitors. ??? After some testing, I'm finding that the -only- setup that works is the following: Dock DVI port 1 to Moni... Answer:Second monitor not detected: T430s with Mini Dock Plus Series 3 dual external monitor

Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Hi, I use T430s + ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 ? 90W for quite a while. However, I always have a problem with the USB 3.0 port on the dock. I can connect a USB 3.0 HDD to this port and achieve 100MB of transfer speed. However, whenever I try to transfer large files like 4GB ISO file or using Windows Backup on my Windows 8/8.1, it will very soon fail and the USB 3.0 HDD will be disconnected. The large file transfer or backup never succeed.I can complete above tasks using T430s onboard USB 3.0 ports without any problem. It is just the USB 3.0 port on the dock that does not do the job. I contacted Lenovo Taiwan and they simply replace a new one for me.The problem persists with the new dock. Can anyone share some insights on this issue? Million thanks!

Hello! Im having a little problem with my docking station. ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3. Seems like the DisplayPort does not work. I use dual 1440p monitors from Phillips and want to connect both with DP as the DVI is single-link only. I have one of the monitors plugged in the MiniDP on the side of T430 so i got that working wich is nice.  Is there some kind of firmware or something i need to install to get the DP working on the docking station? Cant remember i have ever done this and as far as i know it ha never worked... Always used it with a single 24" monitor with VGA. Thanks.

Answer:T430 with ThinkPad Mini dock series 3 DisplayPort ...

This issue is driving me crazy!  I bought new DisplayPort Monitors for T430s ThinkPads using the Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I have 4 identical laptops.  Same software and drivers with two Monitors.  One on the Dock DisplayPort and the other Monitor on the PC Mini DisplayPort.   Three laptops work perfectly.  The forth one blinks! I do have a newer T430s with the Invidia Graphics card that has the same symptoms, but I have come to the conclusion that Lenovo does not support multiple monitors with that version.  Lenovo, Please tell me there is a firmware update for the Type 4337 Mini Dock Series 3 dock.  I saw the link for the T540 dock firmware update.  Will it work on the Series 3 dock?

Hi, I'm interested in the new T520.I'm in Germany and the german shop offers 2 versions of the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (UK or Italy)Whats the difference between the UK and the Italy Version ? Both countrys have other power-plugs than we have in Germany. So which one is right for me? The description fir the Moni Dock Plus says: "Multiple video ports: 1 VGA monitor, 2 DVI, 2 DisplayPort (Note that the video controller allows for any two video ports to be used simultaneously)"Is that 2 ports in adition to the ThinkPad's display? Can I use 3 Screens (Thinkpad +  2 at the dock) or only 2 (any configuration). ThanksTino

Answer:ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 UK / Italy difference?

I think the difference would be in the power adapter plug type, but each should be compatible with your machine. The series 3 plus dock came in 3 flavours in general:1. 90 w adapter type2. 135 w adapter type (for the W510 machine and also compatible with machines used on the 90 w type).3. 170 w adapter type (for the W520 and compatible with the 135 watt and 90 watt adapter type machines). You can support 4 screens if your T520 came with Nvidia Optimus technology, in that case you can use the 1 vga, any 2 of the DVI/Displayport, and one internal LCD (or displayport on the laptop). If you get the intel version, then you only support 2 external LCD, or one external LCD with one internal LCD.

Hi again,as some of you know, I am using a SL500. I have got the Enhanced USB Port Replicator (43R8788). This thing is unusable. Of cause it lacks different interfaces. But the worst thing is that it supports only monitors up to a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels (It's enough to drive you up the wall). Now my question: Is there another dock for the SL500? What about the ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock - Europe (39T4587)? Does it fit to my notebook? If you have hints for me I would be pleasant to replay to this posting. Thanks.

Battery icon says "Plugged in, Charging" but i can see the battery percentage slowly draining. Usb ports, power button on the dock, secondary monitor and everything else seems to be working just fine. Laptop Charges just fine when "undocked". I initially thought it was a bad battery so i purchased a brand new genuine lenovo battery and still the same. Did an online search and cant find a solution to the problem. This all happened after I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64. Anyone know a solution? im all out of ideas.

Mock me if you like, , but...  Figured I would share, so others might benefit? There are a few flavours of AC Power issue out there (some bad 170W Power Supplies, some Lenovo Battery Manager issues, etc.), but if you are greeted with the warning on your W520, and are using a true 170W Power Supply, stop and check the Power Supply plug connection IN to the dock. I know sounds ridiculous, but...  First, given the slotted construction of the 170W Power Supply connector, NEVER force anything!  But, once you've lined that up, are sure and slid it in to the dock, at that point, make SURE that it's really fully seated in to the connector!  PUSH it to ensure! I've been having the issue, and finally realized, on my setup, there is an extra "hump" you have to push the connector past. (How long have I had this machine?  FACEPALM!)  If you plug it in, it will work, but give errors and be problematic on charging.  Once you FULLY plug it in, that problem goes away. I think it's a function of the middle pin not being fully and properly seated - so a test was failing (making it think it was a 90W supply?). And a PS for folks: The original dock for the W520 was the "4338-30U (eSATA)", 170W. I can report that the "4338-35U (USB 3.0)", 170W DOES in fact work with the W520. Sadly (as I expected), no, you don't get another USB 3.0 port on the back of the dock.  It de-rates to a USB 2.0 port, but that port does work -... It will enter stand by, beep, and exit stand by. However, if there are no USB devices plugged into either it will enter and exit stand by normally. Here's the kicker though. If the laptop is not connected to the dock but has USB devices plugged into it, it will enter and exit stand by fine. Hi, I've got a Thinkpad Mini Dock Series 3 and a T410. After not using the dock for ~3 months while I was away from home, I re returned and attempted to use it only to find that there were several connectivity issues with it: 1) The DVI connection does not work at all.2) The DisplayPort connection requires me to fiddle with it every time to get my T410 to recognize it.3) The audio jack is only giving me sound from my left speakers. This is really frustrating, particularly how I have to fiddle with the DisplayPort connection every time, because I have 2 external monitors. Has anyone run into these issues before? Thanks!

Answer:T61 with a mini dock to large LCD display

I have never tried to use HDMI on my setup but I can say with certainty that the Quadro card on the laptop can easily output 1920x1600 through the pass-thru DVI on the advanced mini-dock.  If u want to go further with a 30" display, I am not sure.  However, u can get the advanced full dock, which supports an add-on for low profile PCI express cards, which should come in dual link flavor for 30"+ LCD's (unless your LCD does not require dual link, at which point, I'm not sure of the max output via DVI).  However, the advanced full dock only takes half height/low profile cards, which are exceedingly difficult to find if u are looking for a high end and high quality card.

I've been having this issue sporadically, where my W520 will fail to enter suspend.  The screen goes dark, backlight goes off, but the fan continues to spin and the status lights remain lit.  I've tried leaving it for several minutes. After running `powercfg -energy` twice, once while docked and once while on disconnected and battery power, it appears to have narrowed down the culprit to the USB hub(s) in the docking station. There don't seem to be any special drivers available or required for this thing.  What else can I try?

Answer:T430 on ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3, no output on DVI port

Hi, pili189012

When you attempt to connect the DVI input, does anything happen? What model of monitor/TV are you trying to connect the DVI to? Finally, when the DVI cable is connected to the dock and to the external device, does anything change in the Screen Resolution screen? (To navigate here, right-click on the Desktop and select Screen Resolution from the list.) How many monitors are listed here?

Best,
Adam

Hey guys, Hello Lenovo Support! I was wondering, if I could use the ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 (45N6678), which was originally shipped for T510, with my new W520 (4282W17)... I only need a DVI-out with 2560x1600dpi and a GBit LAN.So that is why I'm not with the official supported dock (0A90204).Furthermore the 0A90204 costs almost double of the 45N6678. Thanx,Soko

Answer:45N6678 ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 fits for W520?

no you can't use it, you would need to use the mini dock series 3 170 watt, have a look here:http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Dock-compatibility-table-for-W500-W510-W520/ta-...

The dvi out port itself doesn't support WQXGA, if you need the dual link support you would need an active displayport to dual link dvi adapter.

[email protected], i use a T61 (8892-79G) and a advanced mini dock together with a two screen setup and everytime i undock from the advanced minidock the laptop LCD turns on, is OK for about 5-10 seconds and then the backlight turns off. when i try to reactivate it with the FN shortcuts it comes back again for 2-3secs and then it goes again... i am using an up-to-date windows 2000 with the latest lenovo drivers - and i am slowly getting mad with it...when i place the laptop back into the dock the backlight is stable on again... (and so it is if i never place it in the dock - no problems in this cases) anyone has a clue for me how to solve this behaviour? edith: i think i found the solution, killing/deactivating the nvidia driver helper service fixes this behaviour... Message Edited by Indigo on 07-07-2008 10:28 PM

I know it's just been released, but I was wondering if anyone could answer the following: Based on the page here: Dock Reference Guides The X220 works with the Mini Dock Plus Series 3. The reason I'm wondering is that I really would like the option of having two external displays when the laptop is docked (with the laptop display turned off), and it seems like this should work, but I can't find anything definitely whether or not the X220 can drive 2 external displays (the intel video card should be able to do it, but I'd like to know before pulling the trigger, as unfortunately, dual displays is sort of a requirement.) Does anyone know if this is doable?

Answer:Question about x220 compatibility with ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 90W

with dual external monitor configuration, your internal monitor will automatically shut off.

Problem #1I'm having trouble with the display settings on a T61.  If I have the laptop undocked, I can get the resolution of 1400 x 1080.  If I dock it, the resolution automatically becomes 1024 x 768 on both the laptop and the monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 225BW).  I use the presentation manager and create a new profile with the correct settings I want and I get an error message that reads.... "The following settings you have selected cannot be applied properly.  Change the setting and try again.  Notebook LCD Resolution Color Quality Problem #2Failing to get the correct resolution using the analog connection, I try using the digital.  I switch the input on the monitor to digital and it shows the "no input signal" until I plug it up to the docking station.  When I try to switch my display to the monitor, nothing happens.  The monitor detects that it's connected to something, but I can't get anything to display. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  This has been bugging me for two weeks now.

Answer:Display issue with T61 and Advanced Mini Dock

I have having similar issues so any ideas would be great. When docked with the laptop closed, when I power up the digital display does not see the connection. Once I open the T61 in the dock the digital display comes to life. Problem is I don't want the laptop open since it sits under the monitor. I've also tried to create scheme settings via the intel graphics media driver, and they work great, but only when I have the laptop open to be able to select them. If I find anything I'll let you know, and if anyone has any ideas at this time I would greatly appreciate it.

My T520, Optimus: HD3000&NVS4200, is sitting in "Lenovo ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3" and connected to Dell 2711 via dock's DisplayPort.I've had the T520 for a a month or so (and drivers it arrived with) and (finally) decided to do a few updates, using Lenovo's "ThinkVantage System Update".I selected to update:"ThinkPad Video Features [NVIDIA NVS 4200M and Quadro 1000M/2000M Optimus] for Windows 7 64" (8.17.12.6871/8.15.10.2321) and"Intel Chipset Support for Windows XP/Vista/7" (9.2.0.1021). That seemed to go well and computer rebooted fine (in dock). Then (now courageous) I updated "WiFi Driver for Intel Cards (For Windows 7 64bit)"  (14.01.1000). Selected to to reboot. However, T520 did no go beyond it's Lenovo's boot screen. If I take the laptop out of dock, it boots fine; if I wake from standby in dock, it's also fine. But this is not how I started this morning and certainly not what I want when I'm using Lenovo's own update method..  (ala. LILO) I uninstalled WiFi driver but that didn't help.Rebooting whilst in dock I don't have ability to even select F1 or boot into Safe-mode. I'd have been prepared for something like this if I updated BIOS, but I intentionally didn't! I mean, I am not even sure that a backup-restore would help. Has anyone else installed the above driver/software? Any advice or experience (and/or resolutions) from others? Thanks.

Answer:Updated T520's video and chipset (and WiFi) and now can't boot in-dock

Does it help if you turn off the physical wireless switch on the side and then try to boot it in the dock?

Hello, What's the best way to setup an Extrernal Display with the T61 and the Mini-Dock? What I want to do isbe able to dock the Laptop with the lid down and have the External Monitor display, then undock and havethe Laptop screen display. The problem i am having is after I undock, the Laptop screen is blank, FN F7does not work, so I have to power down the Laptop. There are 3 options for setting up displays: Presentation Dir-Nvidia Control Panel-XP PRO Display properties.Which one is the best? Which one to use? Thanks! OU812

Answer:T61 (XP PRO) External Monitor with Mini-Dock best way???

the easiest solution would be to install presentation director, set up a few profiles, and use Fn+F7 to control your display.   in your power plan, set it to power off the display upon lid close but not to sleep.   then use Fn+F4 to put the system to sleep when necessary.

Hello,I have a t400s and a mini dock plus 3. I connect to 2 viewsonic monitors both dvi.The problem I have is when I use the laptop off of the dock and then redock the laptop pushes to the first monitor fine but the second one does not come up until i go into windows XP display properties and attach it. Everything is fine from this point as long as I do not use the laptop off of the dock. Once I do and reboot on the dock the second monitor disppears again and I have to attach it again under windows display properties. Now I assume this is because this docking station is not a true dock. You do not tell windows xp that you are undocking before the laptop is removed. It is "rip and go."Hoping someone has a solution around not having to go into display properties to enable the second monitor everytime I redock.Any help is appreciated.thanks,sgossard34

Our company uses docking stations on all our laptops with dual monitors. One is usually set up as Digital and one Analog to match the docking station ports available. Current configuration: Windows 7 Enterprise, all drivers up to date. Mini Docking Station. Primary monitor is a digital Planar PL1910M, the Secondary monitor is a Analog Planar PL1910M. Monitors are set to Extend, not clone. Graphics Options are set on Output to Extended Desktop --> Digital Display + Monitor When docked and the laptop is closed the Primary Digital screen comes up fine. When logging into Windows you would expect that the extended monitor (the analog monitor) would then show up with the extended screen. It remains blank. If you turn the power off on the second monitor and then back on, then the extended screen shows. It is as though it is not waking up the connection to the second monitor. I tried changing it around to the Analog being primary and the secondary being digital, but then the primary screen does not wake up when the computer is started. Any ideas?

I currently have my ThinkPad T440s connected to two external monitors via the ThinkPad ProDock 40A10090US (One VGA and the other DVI-D). I currently have the two monitors and the laptop displaying separate desktops. However looking at the laptop screen is a pain when switching back and forth between the two large monitors and the laptop. I was curious if my current setup with the T440s and the Pro Dock (40A10090US) could support three monitors (One cloning the laptop screen)?

Answer:ThinkPad T440s + ThinkPad Pro Dock 40A10090US = Triple Monitor?

I don't know if you can use both the on-laptop DisplayPort and the dock DVI-D at the same time, but if you can, you should be able to get the three monitors of output you want. Not sure if you can force it to clone the laptop display, but you might as well skip the internal display entirely.

Answer:T510 not connecting to apple 30' display through mini dock

Make sure you are using a dual dvi cable and not an older single version.  You can usually tell by the amount of pins which are missing in the connector A dual link cable will have all of the pins included, while a single link digital will be missing 2 rows, and an analog only cable will have even fewer. I would also make sure that the dock supports dual link as well..  WHAT ARE SINGLE AND DUAL LINKS ?The Digital formats are available in DVI-D Single-Link and Dual-Link as well as DVI-I Single-Link and Dual-Link format connectors. These DVI cables send information using a digital information format called TMDS (transition minimized differential signaling). Single link cables use one TMDS 165Mhz transmitter, while dual links use two. The dual link DVI pins effectively double the power of transmission and provide an increase of speed and signal quality; i.e. a DVI single link 60-Hz LCD can display a resolution of 1920 x 1200, while a DVI dual link can display a resolution of 2560 x 1600.

Hi, I have a Lenovo T500 model 2055CTO running Windows XP SP3.  I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 display, with Driver version 8.563.2.1000 dated 04/01/2009.  My BIOS version/date is 3.01 - 5/15/2009.  My BIOS display settings have the Boot Display Device as Thinkpad LCD with Graphics Device = Discreet. I have two Planar PE191M displays connected to a 2504 Mini Dock, one in the VGA port and one in the DVI port.  The displays can be connected either digitally or analog.  When I run the ATI Catalyst Control Center, the available display devices shows the Notebook Panel (DDC display), the Analog monitor (PE191M) and the Digital Flat Panel (PE191M).  Even though the Digital Device is listed as available, when I select it, it never works.  It's as if no signal is sent to the display.  I know both the dock and display work, as they work fine when I connect my old T60p to the dock. I've treied changing the BIOS Graphic Device to Switchable mode which invokes the Intel display device, but this does not work.  I wonder if anyone else has a similar experience, if this is related to the driver or BIOS, and if anyone has any ideas on how to get the digital output to work. Thanks!

Hi, I have a T410s which is docked in a Min Dock Plus 3. Hooked up to this I have to Lenovo Thinkvision L2251p monitors; one connected via DisplayPort and one via VGA (I have also tried having two connected via Displayports) connected to the docking station. The problem is as follows; I only get a picture on the monitor using the VGA Port. The secondary monitor always goes into standby but Windows 7 does recognize it and I can move the mouse cursor over into the part of the desktop that is "showing" on it. I have tried both Displayports on the dock and also using 2 displayports. When I tried using just a single displayport connection to one monitor the monitor would show a picture but randomly it would go black for about 1 second before the picture came back. This is driving me crazy and I would love to be able to use both my monitors and not just have one standing on my desk like a giant paperweight... Any help or ides would be appreciated. PS; the lid on the laptop is closed so I'm not using the internal LCD; only the external monitors. -Michel

Bit of a multi display novice, with a question: What is the maximum number of external displays that can be utilized with the ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 170W. As I understand it, you can baseline connect three external displays without adapters, so with the laptop that is three monitors (1+3).  Then say you start getting creative and start using adapters, can you go up to five or six external displays? Are there performance issues? Does the computer have trouble recognizing displays, etc.? Would it benefit from a screen management program like UltraMon? This is for simple excel jockeying, and business productivity, (for instance I would want to have a display for each instance of Excel 1, Excel 2, Excel 3, Word,  Outlook, PDF),  and would use the NVidia Optimus Card for the displays.

Depending on which ThinkPad you got, you can get 3 screens up and working (the W530 i tested could drive 4 external + 1 internal without using things like DP splitter or USB display adapter).

Have been happily running windows 10 - with dual monitors, but since a recent update, the system once re-docked will no longer re-detect that it using different monitors. Previously i could use it:1. Un-docked - at 1600 x 9002. then when i put it to sleep3. Then dock it and resumed:     it would     a) switch to 1920 x 1080, and     b) also detect and display on the second monitor - no intervention required. Now, it remains in it's prior "state" (it neither changes state nor outputs to the second monitor) - only outputting to the first external monitor - but at 1600 x 900. Thus since a recent change, it is not "re-detecting" the "change in state" on resume, ONLY when i now do a full restart. The update may have been a Windows update, but on the same day i also installed a Toshiba Dynadock - with dual display port support. I have used the Lenovo system update to update the driver - now it is at 10.18.10.4425 - and as the driver loaded the monitors re-detected, and corrected - but later the problem is persisting. Does anyone know how to force the driver to re-detect on resume not just on restart? Or is this a "consequence of doing things in a certain order" System:Lenovo T430s laptop -HD Graphics 4000  version 10.18.10.4425 (from Lenovo System Update)UPDATED: to 10.18.10.4653 - 7/4/2017with a Lenovo ThnikPad Usb 3.0 Pro Dock (dual HDMI/DVI ports)dual BenQ GL2450 monitors.

The ThinkPad Multiple Monitor Configurations pdf (LINK) says the DVI port  on thinkpad Mini Dock Series 3 only support up to 1920x1200, but I would like to connect the DVI-D port to a external monitor with 2560x1600 resolution.  Will it work?  I am planning to buy a T420 with a discrete Nvidia Optimus video card and a mini dock series 3.  Yes, I can't use the display port because the external monitor only have DVI-D port.  I knew that the DVI-D port is able to support 2560x1600 resolution as long as the video card support it, I don't understand why the DVI-D port on the thinkpad mini dock series 3 can only support  up to 1920x1200 even though the Nvidia Optimus Technology is powful enough. I just got a Thinkpad X220 and the "Thinkpad mini dock plus series 3". When the x220 is placed into the station only the monitor display works and it charges the x220. However, the "Startup button" in the dock in the dock never lights up and doesn't work; None of the USB ports work; And the speaker "port" doesn't pass sound. If I connect all the external USB, sound, etc. directly to the laptop ports (not the dock ports) they all work. I can't find anything that would help me troubleshoot this. It's probably obvious. Any ideas?

Everything I find suggests that this is a possibility, but i can't get any traction. Backstory: I had a previous setup where I used the laptop display in addition to two external monitors. One of the external monitors was coupled to the VGA port and the other to one of the two DVI ports. Worked fine. What I want: I bought a third monitor as a substitute for the laptop display. I want to close the laptop and use three external displays connected to the DOCKING STATION. I have tried every possible arrangement, but I can't get three displays going.  VGA, DVI, DVI doesn't work.VGA, DVI, DisplayPort doesn't work.DVI, DVI, DisplayPort doesn't work. No matter what arrangement I go with, the monitor that is hooked up to the Displayport (on the docking station) gets NO SIGNAL. Even when I disconnect everything except DisplayPort and reboot, I still can't get a signal on the Displayport. Oddly, the "System Topology" under the nvidia control panel is recognizing the monitor. Under DisplayPort(3), it says "Connected: Lenovo Group Limited LEN LT2452pwC". Unfortunately, there is no signal reaching the monitor itself. As I said, my ultimate goal is to get three monitors coupled to my docking station. At the moment, I can't get the DisplayPort to work under any circumstances. Equipment:Thinkpad W530 with nvidia quadro k2000mmini dock plus series 3 with the following outputs: VGA, DisplayPort/DVI #1, DisplayPort/DVI #2.monitor 1: Lenovo LT2452 with VGA ... Hi Aside from the woes of opting to put an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD in a T510 (drive bay very snug and OCZ have firmware issues with some drives...) I am also seeing a problem with the T510 when docked. On the dock from booting up you dont get any video output until Windows loads. The monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 205BW. The T510 has the Nvidia Optimus card, and I have tried all the options in the BIOS. Strangely in the BIOS the description text in the right hand column doesnt quite match the BIOS options, as the descriptions mentions extra options that arent visible (cant recall right now without shutting down!). I am booting up with the lid on the laptop closed, as I have on 3 previous generations of Thinkpad without having this issue (admittedly on analogue VGA, but I am sure at least one worked on DVI too...) Anyone else seeing this type of issue? I have searched around and seen similar issues with regard to DVI or multi-monitors, but not specifically just getting DVI output from power on.

Answer:T510 with Advanced Mini Dock 3 and DVI monitor

I know that using older models with switchable graphics this is normal behavior for all the digital ports (DVI, Displayport...), but for VGA there was no such issues. I'm not actually sure if this is normal behavior for the Optimus models as well. I never tried to reboot my optimus Thinkpad when connected to an external monitor using DVI during boot. Did you try VGA just to see if everything works fine during boot?

For the switchable graphics models you could go into BIOS and disable switchable graphics by selecting "discrete" and digital ports worked fine during boot, but then switchable graphics would be disabled as well.

As i said i'm not really sure about the behavior of optimus and maybe someone else could give you an answer, but if it's the same as optimus this would be normal behavior during boot when using the digital ports when Optimus is enabled in BIOS.

Hello.I have just bought a new LCD display and wanted to connect it with an Advanced Mini Dock through a DVI cable. There is an integrated graphics chip on my 7658-CTO, which definitely didn't simplify matters. I connected a monitor, powered on T61 and... of course screen remained blank. Then I switched boot display device in BIOS to DVI (in fact tested every option) still with no success. I found on this forum an opinion saying that getting DVI to work actually depends on monitor you connect with it, which, to be honest, sounded bizarre. I got neither other TP nor other monitor to test, so gave up. Few days later I inserted ubuntu 7.10 livecd (rather the old one) forgetting that dock was still connected with monitor through DVI (which didn't work though) and... it just worked It looks like there's a problem with Intel Driver (installed by System Update, Vista Basic 64bit) or Lenovo is software-blocking usage of DVI by integrated graphics (which completely doesn't make sense). I just wonder how can not official intel_agp driver work on Linux and, at the same time, official Intel Driver can't handle DVI on Windows. Any ideas? Can this be a matter of sequence in which Lenovo's software should be installed (I don't use images, rather do a clean Windows install and then fire System Update, allowing Windows Update only to install security updates and letting SU install drivers part)?Message Edited by ebd123 on 01-15-2009 10:04 AM
