T510 Question (WWAN vs. GOBI)

Question: T510 Question (WWAN vs. GOBI)

I?m looking at replacing my old Thinkpad T43 at home with a new T510. I?m confused as to the difference between the WWAN option and a GOBI 2000 card. They seem to accomplish the same thing. Could someone please elaborate? Thank you, Jesse

Preferred Solution: T510 Question (WWAN vs. GOBI)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

HiI recently came by a HP GOBI 2000 wwan cardThis exact model: NEW HP Gobi2000 HSUPA 2G 3G WCDMA WWAN UMTS Wi Fi Card GPS UN2420 I know this might be a long shot, but are there any workarounds to getting such a card to work in a W530?I tried pluggin it in, and whereas the first driver installs, the "Lenovo broadband activation" fails, the card shows up with a question mark in device manager, and troubleshooting it in "adapter settings" states that "there might be a problem with the driver"I know that the chipset should be supported, so what is the problem here? Driver signing? Or Bios whitelist?Any help much obliged

Answer:gobi 2000, wwan not detected - non-lenovo GOBI 2000

Hi, eyeland

Do you have a SIM card inserted in the machine? If not, this will be needed for WWAN access. Also, which version of Windows are you running, and what drivers did you download to get the card to work?

Thanks in advance,Adam

Question: T510: Gobi 2000

I am an insurance salesman, not an IT guy, so it was a painful experience, but I got it done. When delivered, I had chosen configured for WWAN.  I discovered that I had to now order a Wireless card.  That done, I followed the picture for installation that one needs a magnifying glass to read.  There is no instructions on how to hook up the wires to the card, and I had to struggle to get the wires to lay in a manner that would allow me to close everything up.  The first couple of tries resulted in the wires popping off as soon as I tried to secure the card in its slot. Next was getting a mobile broadband data plan.  I chose Verizon and wanted a minimum monthly plan.  To choose the Lenovo option would mean a 2 year committment at the highest price per month.  The only problem is that few people at Verizon know how to set this up.  I was transferred to a tech I think may be in Atlanta, but he was the only Verizon tech that understood what I wanted.  You have to insist to Verizon that you have an embedded chip wireless card.  They will try their best to get you to install a USB dongle.  With the Gobi chip, your equipment is customer provided (CPE) so Verizon will allow you a month to month contract and no cancellation charges.  I found out that I could make a small software change and get the Gobi to work with Sprint, so I am waiting to see how Verizon works out.  If I don't like them, I can switch without... As you know 9012 is for fw loading management. Also, as you see Gobi 3000 sits on usb interface only.

Hi, I have a X201 laptop from US and I would like to use it in Singapore with a valid SIM card from M1.Although I can connect to internet using mobile broadband successfully, but GPS does not seem to work well with it.I have updated Lenovo GPS to latest 2.60, but I do not see a XTRA (A-GPS) in GPS mode.I understand that XTRA needs WWAN connectivity, though I have WWAN working but it's still indicated as "not activated" for Lenovo software. Is there anyway I can change (e.g. registry setting) to "activate" mobile broadband so I can use XTRA in Lenovo GPS?

Good morning all. I recently installed a GOBI 5000 WWAN card for AT&T into my new Thinkpad T440p. I downloaded the driver package from the appropriate Windows 8.1 matrix and the computer crashed (blue screen DRIVER_POWER_SAVE) and then restarted. The driver appears to have been installed, as the device manager shows the following entry under networking adapters: Sierra Wireless EM7355 Qualcomm GOBI 4G/LTE/HSPA+/EVDO Also, under the networking portion of the Metro style settings page, the AT&T Broadband modem shows up, and with information regarding the IMEI, IMSI, which I forwarded to AT&T, so as far as they are concered my preexisting Data plan is current with the modem's IMEI number.. Still no luck with connecting. There was mention of Lenovo Broadband Mobile Activation Utility which I found elsewhere on Lenovo's but upon lauching the installer, it says that the current card is not supported. Overall, not sure what to do to get this thing connected to Mobile Broadband, also not sure if incomplete driver installation could be the culprit. I am going to call Lenovo support to see what they can do, will update here.

Answer:T440p WWAN connection GOBI 5000

Just got off with Lenovo Tech Support. They mentioned that theThinkPad GOBI 5000 Mobile Broadband - AT&T GOBI 5000 WWAN card, Part number: 0C52886 using Sierra Wireless EM7355 - GOBI 5000 software (ghwp14ww.exe), version 3.4.1308.3909 as of 13 DEC 2013 may not be compatible with Windows 8.1 which is what I am running currently. I will check on when the updated driver package appears with compatibility for Windows 8.1 and post here, they mentioned that it should be pushed via Lenovo System Update, so I guess I will stay tuned.

Will the new AT&T Gobi 5000 work with the T530?  Not that it should matter but the innards include an i7-3520M, 16GB 1600MHz, and a 256GB 840 Pro.  I'd opt for the 5000 rather than the 4000 if I knew it was compatible.  Any advice?

I have a W510 with the Gobi WWAN chipset running x64 Win7 Enterprise.  Once I install the Gobi WWAN driver, the system has a BSOD within 10 seconds of the install wrapping up.  After a reboot, if I switch off the wireless, I am OK, but once I switch it back on, I will BSOD within a minute.  I am running the latest BIOS as of today.  I am running the latest Gobi drive from the Lenovo site (1.1.90/2.0.6.9).  Any help would be appreciated.

Exactly the same behaviour with an identical configuration here. Bluescreen whenever I activate WWAN Devices within 1-300 seconds. Tried bios update and W7 x64 blank-install. Without Simcard the OS remains stable (however tried 3 different sim cards with different carriers). Is there any firmware update for the Gobi chipset? Anyone found out something more specific?

HiThe reason of issue is inappropriate fw loaded to the modem by default. It's fw for Verizon, #1 in the fw images directory structue. So, presently modem is ready to work in the CDMA/EV-DO network Verizon, only. Vodafone network needs fw #0. Most of UMTS networks need fw #6 (Generic). Modem isn't locked, just fw is a cause.Further steps for the fw changing depend on the OS installed, drivers (re)installation capabilities, external media with LiveCD etc.

Jim, I hope you have this working by now, but if not you should know the Lenovo have released Windows 7 Qualcomm BETA drivers, which (at least for my W500) seems to be working fine. You'll find the Win 7 BETA page here and the Qualcomm beta drivers here (ThinkPad UNDP Wireless WAN Driver) I had to uninstall the drivers I had installed from Vista, and then install these. After that , since I have a Ericsson F3507g, I also had to install the Ericsson drivers as well - don't know if this is relevant for yoy. I have this running on Lenovo W500 installed with Win 7 x64 build 7100 and build 7232. Hope this helps,Zorroson

Hello, I'm experiencing massive problems with the BIOS versions newer than the 1.10a release. As soon as I apply the two newer versions 1.11 (6XET32WW) and 1.13 (6XET34WW), the WWAN device Gobi 2000 isn't listed any more in the device manager and a connection using this device isn't possible any more. The newest Access Connections states that the device isn't found.Applying the setup defaults after updating the BIOS doesn't resolve the problem. Searching the internet shows, that multiple people are struggling with this problem. As soon as I roll back to the 1.10a (6XET31WW) BIOS version, the problem doesn't exist any more. System details:* Thinkpad Model: 2876-27G* all newest thinkpad/thinkvantage packages installed* all currently available windows updates installed* Working BIOS: 1.10a (6XET31WW)* Problem causing BIOS: 1.11 (6XET32WW) and 1.13 (6XET34WW) Regards,rotorhead

Answer:X100e BIOS Problems with WWAN Device Gobi 2000

Hello rotorhead, welcome to Lenovo forums!

Please try this:

1. In BIOS under "Security" / "IO Port Access" disable the devices "WiMAX" and "Wireless WAN" 2. Reboot 3. Shut down the machine completely. 4. Go into BIOS and enable "WiMAX" and "Wireless WAN"

If that doesnīt work please uninstall WWAN-driver, Access Connection und Hot key driver, then install first the hotkey driver, AC and WWAN driver.

I have a T400 with the built in Qualcomm Gobi card that was originally sold as Verizon only.  I have ATT and didn't want to switch so I was using an external card. I noticed that the latest version of the Lenovo driver said that it added ATT support.  I figured I would give it a shot. We received 2 brand new X1 Carbon (type 20A7) models and neither have been able to detect the Gobi 5000 WWAN card (Sierra Wireless EM7355, Lenovo Part# 0C52902.)  The X1 Carbon's are running the latest drivers (including BIOS update), Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1- it doesn't matter: They will not detect the WWAN card in the WWAN slot. Tried 2 different WWAN cards straight out of the box from Lenovo (these happen to be the Verizon variants, I don't have any AT&T ones handy) and it's like it doesn't even exist. Yet I can remove either Gobi 5000 card and install it into a T440s and it comes up without any issue. I've tried taking a working and activated Gobi 5000 card out of a T440s and putting it into the X1 Carbon, yet the X1 Carbon refuses to recognize the device exists in Device Manager. I spent about an hour on the phone with Lenovo tech support who ultimately told me my question was "Out of scope" and something they would not handle. The tech even agreed with my frustration that it's listed right on the **bleep** Lenovo product site: "Mobil [sic] Broadband: Sierra Wireless 7355 - Gobi 5000" and couldn't explain why A) It wasn't working orB) Why Lenovo feels a feature listed on their own marketing materials was "out of scope" for support. She also confirmed the part number is exactly the same and the T440s and the X1 Carbon use the identical part. The tech ultimately speculated that some type of magical "system board upgrade"... The WWAN (Gobi 2000 card) in my X100e won't connect if the card stays enabled (FN-F5) during a system boot or resume from standby.  If I leave it disabled during a reboot or standby/resume and enable it afterwards, everything seems to work fine. I'm using HSPA and I'm in an area with good signal.  The signal strength fades in/out every few seconds according to the Windows Broadband icon when it isn't working.  The signal stays solid and there are no issues if I boot the system with the card disabled initially. I'm running the latest bios (1.23) and the ThinkVantage tools have updated all the software on Windows 7 Professional.  I've loaded the BIOS defaults a few times now and Lenovo wants the unit back to replace the Gobi 2000 card. The X100e is a recent purchase from Lenovo Canada and it was ordered with the Gobi 2000 card.  Access Connections (AC) wants me to activate on Verizon (not available in Canada), but it does seem to work with a HSPA sim from a Canadian carrier... but AC always prompts to tell me that I'm roaming.  I'd like to get that fixed too. Has anyone experienced this problem?  Any suggestions?  I think it's a s/w problem but I'll ship it back to Lenovo as per their tech support. Thanks...

Answer:X100e WWAN Gobi 2000 Fails if Enabled During Boot/Resume

The X100e is now headed back to Lenovo for EasyServ warranty repair. An identical unit we bought does not exhibit this behavior at all so I'm inclined to believe it's a hardware problem.  The Lenovo phone tech's recommendation to send it in to get the Gobi 2000 card replaced appears to be correct.

That card is not in the BIOS whitelist for a T520, so it wont work.

WWAN cards and the system platform need to be type approved together as a system by all the relevant national RF compliance authorities, so the approvasl are only sought for the current generation of WWAN cards at the time the system platform is released.

The T510 4313-CTO order page for the Gobi 2000 3G with GPS WWAN only showed 1 Selectable SIM Card option.  "SIM Card: USA"  After I placed the order Lenovo installed the AT&T option 60Y6055 (and related labels).  My service is with VerizonWireless, so I needed option 60Y6054  (and related labels).  I was never offered the option to select VerizonWireless. Anyone ordering a T510 with WWAN should consider placing the order on the phone to get access to the correct SIM card options.

Answer:T510 WWAN SIM order option problem

from what i gathered when i ordered the gobi WWAN for one of our machines is that it does BOTH gms (sim required) and cdma. it shouldnt matter which you choose... verizon doesnt require a SIM at all so what are you missing? should just need provide the IMEI/ESN to VZW. is that not jiving with your situation?  actually, now that i think about it, the only reason for a SIM card for VZW would be international traveling when it would rely on GSM What is chitty is that lenovo ties the BIOS to accept only certain cards. HP does it as well. if i buy a product i should be able to install any card i want.

Answer:X120e Gobi 2000 v Gobi 3000

Hello,

I found a spec sheet for the Gobi 2000 here and the one for the Gobi 3000 here.  From looking between the two, it appears the newer 3000 model is ready for UMTS - AWS and EV-DO/CDMA ? 2100 MHz (standards which may not have been ratified when the 2000 was released), supports faster HSDPA speeds (14.4Mbps vs. 7.2Mbps) and is 2.5 grams lighter.

This may seem like a stupid question, so forgive me. I am wanting to purchase the x230, and thinking about getting the gobi 4000 card.  However, my questions is this: I have a Verizon Wireless plan with truly unlimited data... one of those that got grandfathered in. Now, can I take the sim card out of my phone, plug it into the gobi card in the x230, and get Internet access? Thanks.

Answer:X230 question regarding the Gobi 4000 mobile broadband cards

Will you get Sierra Wireless mc7750 card (Gobi 4000 for Verizon Wireless, FRU 0A36318) inside of your laptop or install it yourself? If the answer is "yes", my answer for your question is "yes".But as I know Verizon doesn't need sim card for internet access, you just need to activate your modem with plan in carrier' network using Lenovo Mobile Broadband application. Download it from the site.

Hello, I have a small question about the QualComm Gobi 2000 in the ThinkPad X201 3680-1T2, I wonder if I can send SMS with it in my laptop. I brought SMSCaster however it gives me an error, I have no idea how I can get it to send SMS. Can someone point me into the correct directions to send a SMS using the Gobi 2000, please state the software when used or the settings (and where I can find the settings to enable SMS). Thank you for your supprt. PS: for those who are unfamiliar with the ThinkPad X201 3680-1T2, it is not a touchpad version.

Answer:ThnkPad X201 3680-1T2; QualComm Gobi 2000 question

When you open Access Connections, is the SMS icon on the Tools tab greyed out or in color?  When you left-click your Mobile Broadband icon on the Tools tab (in Access Connections), do you have an option with which to enable SMS?  I have have a similar question for my X201 3249 (about which I have made a similar post).  I have read on the Lenovo Community about SMS problems with Windows 7 but, considering many of these postings were made over a year ago, one would think that a solution to this problem would have been found by now.

I know this has been discussed already, but my searches couldn't find the info I needed. I have a T400 6475-B14 and I would like to be able to use it with an AT&T SIM. However I'm not sure if I need to install new hardware, or if my machine already has what I need.  It's still under warranty and I'm pretty sure that the WWAN card is not a CRU. With the battery removed it shows the "Y" WWAN symbol and the SIM card slot (with blank) is there, but there are different threads that say different things regarding the WWAN hardware.  I've tried looking on the Lenovo site, but I don't seem to be able to find what the right info. Can anyone point me to definitive information on this? Thanks for any/all info! GBA

Answer:T400 AT&T WWAN question

the simplest to identify whether you have a wwan card, is to actually removed the keyboard, and see whether the mini pci-express slot under the Fn key location is occupied.http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70069.htmlthe above is the hardware manual that shows you how to remove the keyboard.http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70069.html

Hello, I have purchased and installed an approved Thinkpad WWAN module (think its a Gobi 2000), but I had to remove a half height Intel mini pcie card to put the WWAN card in. I know have no wifi card showing in device manager. The obvious answer is that I've taken the wifi card out - can someone please confirm that the X201 has no onboard wifi chips? I'm hoping that the mini pcie was an upgrade of some kind (wireless n?), and that I can get the onbaord wifi workign if there is any. Have googled quite a bit but no luck so far. Thanks! PS The laptop is an X201i model number 3323 1ZG

I have a W510 that my work supplied new. When I do a system scan at lenovo.com it says 'WWAN option' in the list. Additionally, when I take the battery out and look in the back there is a place to insert my ATT SIM card, which I have done. My card will only go in one way and it clicks in and pops out on the spring exactly like I would expect. I have installed the Gobi drivers and the access control software. But I can't select the WWAN option in access control and in the device manager screen there doesn't seem to be a device for the WWAN. By the way I checked in the BIOS and it has the option for integrated WWAN devices and the option is set to "On". So do I have this device or not. And if I do, what do I need to install to get it recognized by Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks SNMITCH

Dear forum members
Please can anyone advise. Forgive me for my lack of knowledge
I have bought a latitude E6410 second hand and upon inspecting it found the following :

1. There is a mini-pci WWAN slot, but no WWAN card supplied
2. There is a sim card slot under the battery.
I would like to use the laptop for mobile broadband: This would preferably be for modern speeds available which I understand are called 4g or LTE.
I would like to purchase a WWAN card to meet this requirement. However through google searches I found out that perhaps  not all WWAN mini-pci cards are compatible with the E6410. Some may be whitelisted out by the bios, and be uninstallable on this laptop
Please can anyone advise if this is the case , and if so whether there is information as to which WWAN cards ARE compatible
Any help in this would be much appreciated. With thanks, Ian

Answer:Latitude E6410 wwan question

The two cards Dell shipped are the 5540 and 5620 -- both of which have support for Windows 7 and earlier.  Anything else you'd have to try and see -- and if you're running Windows 10, you'll likely find there are no drivers for even those cards, so be sure if you try another card, that you are certain there are drivers for the OS you're running.

As for the charger i don't think you can use the 90w.....your laptop isn't designed for that type of power.  That's what i've heard in the past.  http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144955&page=2  seems to be some uncertainty.  I'm pretty sure as long as the voltage of the power supply's are the same the watts doesn't matter.   Second one i do not know.

Hello all, just purchased an E7450 and wanted to be able to get a WWAN card so that I can use either AT&T or Verizon for data on it. Is this possible in North America or is this not what that card is for? If so can anyone direct me to where I might find some info on which card works for this laptop?
And a second quick question what is the SC slot for on the side of laptop?

Answer:Latitude E7450 WWAN Question

It may or may not be possible (you'll want to check with AT&T or Verizon on what they support, but if the system was ordered without a WWAN card there will be no antenna wiring in the system - and retrofitting antenna wires will be difficult (conventional display) or impossible (touch screen display with a sealed glass face).
If you want a WWAN adapter, USB is far easier to install -- retrofitting the system with an internal wwan adapter may require a complete system tear-down to do (and before starting verify that there's a SIM card slot on the mainboard - if there isn't, your only option will be USB).
The card slot is probably for a memory or security card in SD format.

I have a ThinkPad T510 4313-CTO and I just upgraded the BIOS to version 1.44 which was released on 2011/05/09.

I used the bootable CD to upgrade to the newest BIOS. When I turn my computer on and I press F1 I see it did the upgrade to BIOS 1.44 but the date still show as 03/29/2011.

**bleep**? shouldn't the date be 2011/05/09? Which is the date when 1.44 come out?

Can someone clarify what's wrong here?

Answer:T510 BIOS 1.44 Question

The date that you see during POST is the date that the BIOS was compiled, it is not released until after it has been tested for bugs. EDIT: I have the same system and just checked, my BIOS is the same version and date as yours.

The CPU whine ( likely inductor noise ) that I keep reading about makes me a bit concerned that I may have made an error in judgment . Does anyone know what percentage of units have this problem ?  Also what are most people doing to help reduce the noise level ?Thanks, Bob

Answer:T510 on its way-- CPU whine question

I'm not sure about exactly how many units have this problem- but it certainly does exist and hasn't been fixed yet (apparently motherboards being manufactured even today). If you have one, I would suggest that you ask Lenovo to send you another one, and another one, and another one until you get one that doesn't whine- I believe you have 14 days (or is that 30?) to get a no-silly-questions-asked replacement (because it's not the hard drive or processor fan that makes that noise). You might get one that doesn't whine and works properly, but then again, you might not. Do not make any compromises in power consumption. Which model did you purchase?

My E330 has one spare mini PCI-E port - I would like to make use of this, however I am aware of the whitelist that Lenovo puts on for FCC regulation. My Question is simple: Does this whitelist stop USB (Pins 36&38 IIRC) devices from being used? Furthermore, would I be able to use something like this ( http://www.amazon.com/Micro-SATA-Cables-PCI-E-Adapter/dp/B008LWLH60  which looks like it uses the 3.3v rail and the USB pins on the slot) with a Logitech unifying reciever, so that I can refrain from losing the reciever, and free up one of the external USB ports. Is it possible?

Hi all!  I just ordered the ThinkPax X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (20A70037US, i7, 8GB, 256GB, Touch).  The only thing I wanted and could not get with it is the WWAN Card. I already have the 2011 version of the X1 (1286-CTO) which comes with the Gobi 300-0 WWAN Card (Sierra Wireless MC8355 ? Gobi(TM) 3000).  I have been trawling the net and forums to check if I can pull out the Gobi 3000 from the older X1 and use it successfully in the X1 Carbon 2nd Gen.  Is the Gobi 3000 compatible with X1 Carbon 2nd Gen?  Will drivers or software be an issue?  Are the slots compatible? I welcome any and all advice.  Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad X1 Carbon WWAN Upgrade Question

Hi, VMarcoUnfortunately Gobi 3000 card you have isn't compatible with X1C Gen 2:- mechanically as it is in the mini pci-e formfactor vs new m.2 formfactor (formerly NGFF) new X1C supports;- logically as your card isn't approved by Lenovo to use in new X1C, it isn't whitelisted for that so as result laptop with that card will be blocked. There are several wwan options for X1C Gen 2 depend of the carrier you'll work with and the speed of wwan access you need:1. Ericsson N5321, HSPA+ 21Mbps:, FRU 04W38422. Gobi 5000 (Sierra Wireless em7355), LTE/EVDO/HSPA+, FRU 04W38012a. the same as item #2., with SIM sku, FRU 04X60383. Sierra Wireless em7345, LTE/HSPA+, FRU 04X6014IMHO the best choice is item #3:- supports both networks class 3g and LTE- supports frequency bands and network carriers almost worldwide, European as well as US (LTE Verizon, AT&T, Sprint)em7345 supports win8/8.1 natively w/o 3rd drivers. For win7 new drivers should be published soon officially. The only lack  there isn't a soluton for card activation within Verizon network yet. Lenovo and Verizon know about that and work for the solution.

Do you guys know if I can use the PE4C or the EXP GDC egpu adapter with this laptop? I ask because quite frankly, I managed to Buy a pe4c and while it did work I constantly got super slow frame rates. I was forced to return it due to lack of support .The machine only had 4 GB of RAM, I used a GeForce 760, with a EVGA 500 W power supply. I would like to really investigate the problem is I'm currently using a desktop computer with a processor inferior to the laptop one.

Hi, AlexXL

If you look at the partitions in Disk Management (Control Panel ? Administrative Tools ? Computer Management ? Disk Management), what are the sizes of the Lenovo_Recovery and SYSTEM_DRV? If they are the correct partitions, then there should be no reason that you cannot recover your system from these.

I just got my 510.  Worlds better then T400.  I thought I was limited to 4 g of ram.  WIth 64 bit can I goto 8g and will I notice a difference. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Win7 64 Memory question T510

You can definitely go to 8GB on a T510 (I know--I ordered mine with 8GB). Will you notice a difference? -- it depends what you do with your computer.  If you're a casual user surfing the web using Office, stuff like that--definitely not.  If you're a developer or techie that needs to run multiple virtual machines, then probably yes you'd benefit from more RAM.  There are probably other scenarios too.  Tell us what your planned usage is and then we can make an informed recommendation.  But for most users--I'd say not worth the $. Note also unless you ordered yours with a single 4GB DIMM, then you'd actually have to remove all of your current RAM and buy two 4GB DIMMs in order to get to 8GB since there are only two slots (and most likely unless you paid extra to upgrade to a single DIMM) both of yours are probably full already.

Windows 7 64bit on my T510 has died. When logging in, it hangs on the login screen forever. Windows recovery failed too. It ran for 8 hours and reported error (something like error in restoring a file and disk is full, though my C drive is half empty). After that all the Windows restoration points are gone. So I suppose I have to do factory reset. My question is, I made two additional partitions on my hard drive using external tools, which store all of my data. So when I do factory reset, will these two partitions be overwritten? Any suggestion so I can recover the system while keeping all my data? Thank you.

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:T510 factory reset question

The factory recovery will wipe out all the partitions on the drive. When faced with a similar problem, here is what I do:First, I remove all hard drive passwords. Then, I suggest funning the hard disk test in the BIOS to see if the disk is the root of the problem. Then buy a new hard drive, and install the OS to the new drive. The old drive can be mounted in a USB housing or an Ultrabay adapter to access the data. I tend to keep the old drive for 3 - 6 months in case I missed or forgot something, then I sell or reuse the old drive, after wiping it.

Hello, I have two questions that I would like ask other X201T owners, your response is much appreciated. 1. Recently I've been taking my tablet with me to work and research, and I noticed that my tablet runs uncomfortably hot on my lap sometimes. Since then, I have been monitoring my system temperatures and it seems unusually high. It doesn't feel safe either. I was wondering what the normal operating temperature range for the X201T is? Problem Description:My system runs idle (no tasks taking up CPU usage) set to "FANS ALWAYS ON" with CPU temperatures ranging anywhere from ~120 degrees F to ~140 degrees F (it's usually around 130 F).And under stress (when I'm running games like Warcraft 3) with "FAN ALWAYS ON", the CPU temperatures range from ~175 F to ~185 F.Test Environment:Room Temperature with AC on is about 68-70 F.Tablet is placed on a regular wood desk (not on my lap, it's too hot for me).Cooling vents are fully clear and not blocked; and the hot air from the tablet is fully able to be ventilated.Drivers are all updated to the most current updates using System Update from Lenovo and a clean installation of the Windows 7 was performed prior to testing.HWMonitor 1.16/Core Temp/Real Temp were used to monitor the system temperatures.I checked the specifications of the Intel Core i7-640LM and it shows:TJUNCTION105°C which translates to 221 F. I know my CPU isn't working at the maximum specifications, but the temperatures of ~186 F still seems quite hot ... Read more

Hello, I have searched the forum and it seem several folks are having trouble connecting their T510 to a TV.  Using a Display Port to HDMI adapter, some people are having full success, others are getting video but no audio, and others are not getting audio or video. Any thoughts on how to at least get video?  Would this work:http://www.ebay.com/itm/350401632362?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649The description says, " While DisplayPort connectors are capable of passing an HDMI signal, DisplayPort and HDMI signals are basically different and not compatible with each other. In order for this cable to function properly, you must have a DisplayPort source device capable of producing and passing out an HDMI signal through the DisplayPort jack. Any recommendations for an inexpensive, working adapter cable would be appreciated.  One poster said the Dell adapter was working, see http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Cables/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=330-1271#O... . Is there a difference between a cable with a Display Port connector on one side and an HDMI connnector on the other and an "adapter" that has some kind of conversion circuitry inside? Thank you,bdz

Hi all, I have an S10 4333-36U from Best Buy and I was happy that it had an extra mini pci-e slot (3G Sim + WWAN) at the bottom.  To my excitement, I blindly bought a Broadcom HD Crystal Decoder (BCM970012 / BCM70012) from ebay and it is minipcie.  According to the datasheet of this HD decoder, it uses the real pci express.  Doing some research (I know, I should have done this before buying) .. I found out that there is a "possiblity" that the extra minipcie slot of my S10 is not a real minipcie!  They were saying that it uses a USB 2.0 interface, instead of the pcie lane - which will make my Broadcom chip useless - if proven true. So guys, do you think that the extra slot on the S10 is really using USB interface???? .. I really hope it is not! Or maybe someone can confirm that the broadcom chip will still work even though it is plugged in to the 2nd minipcie slot rummored to be USB interfaced. Thank you!

Answer:S10 4333-36U - 2nd mini pcie slot question (WWAN)? What interface does it use?

I understood that the slots can use either pcie or usb depending on what card is in them.  I too bought a crystal HD card for my S12 Intel but it won't work. It's visible in device manager but the Intel 945 graphics chipset cannot see it and so cannot use it, don't know if it's a driver problem or a chipset limitation. If your S10 uses the same chipset that's why it won't work for you.

Hi,I have a question regarding the Fan of the T510 or any other later versions of the TP Fans. Is it a mechanical bearing or is it a Magnetic Bearing. The reason why I am asking is because I have cleaned the fan with a Q-Tip by wiping it down and then using a vacuum (yes I know that is not exactly the recommended way) of de-dusting the vents and the fan blades. Granted that the TP is running fine and without any problems, upon reading some other horror stories of other people's laptops' fans which were ruined by incorrectly wiping the fan blades to short circuiting the laptop because the fan caused reverse spinning which created a motor, I am getting slightly paranoid. So, would the difference in the bearings of the fan make a difference? Whether if it is magnetic versus mechanical? Thanks

Answer:T510 / T-Series Laptop Fan Mechanism / Longevity Question

The fan has a very simple mechanism. There is a shaft that is either hard plastic or , more likely, some sort of carbon fiber, that slides into a brass bushing. I have never run a chemical analysis to determine whether the shaft is plastic or something else, or if the bushing is brass or bronze.

Just one day past my warranty and a small amount of juice spilled on my T510 keyboard. The machine doesn't power up now. The situation is, when on battery, the machine does not respond at all, but when use the power cable, the power button on the keyboard illuminated and when pressed the micro button illuminated. But the machine does not power up. There is a fuzzy sound of current running through when the power cable is plugged in, I took apart the keyboard and top panel, inspect the motherboard and didn't see a single water residue and I suppose the water doesn't get inside the machine. Another proof is that the bottom of keyboard is sticky because of the juice but the mother board feels completely clean and dry, except for dirt. I was wondering if there is some problem with the keyboard but does not have an extra one to test; I test the motherboard with a phone plugged into the back usb which suppose to provide power under power cable, and didn't work. If the motherboard is broken I probably will be charged at lest 400 bucks for replacement, not including labors at a local service provider. I called the customer service and they refused to provide any suggestions unless I send in for at least 175 bucks. Is there any suggestions I can future diagnose the system with normal household tools or should I just send in th system for 175-575 bucks? For that price I probably would get another refurb laptop. I attached two photos taking under the to... Read more

Answer:[Urgent] [T510] Water Spill issue T510

A basic warranty wouldn't cover accidental damage like a spill anyway.  Juice is one of the worst things to spill. It has sugar and acid, and it conducts electicity. If the spill just happened today, you can try complete disassembly, cleaning affected areas with electronics cleaner and then delatured alcohol. You can dry it in a very low (under 200F) oven. My experience has been that it sometimes works, but not usually. The fact that you can hear something is not good. Often the spill is more obvious on the bottom of the board.

Hi Guys, I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad X61s 7669-3KG  L7500(1.6GHz), 2GB RAM, 160GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, Intel Turbo Memory, 4c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32 which is a non-WWAN laptop, although it has a built-in slim card slot. Now, I'm wondering if this particular notebook can be upgraded to WWAN? If yes - which parts must I buy?Do I have to have only 3G modem card or any additional antennas or slots? Please let me know.Radek

Answer:X61s-non WWAN upgrade to WWAN

It really depends on if your system has antennas for WAN.  If so, there will be two wires that look like the ones plugged into the wireless LAN card except they will be marked one red and one blue.  If you have them, you can look in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the part numbers of the cards for this system.

I custom ordered my X200 and it got delivered yesterday. When you go to the X200 customizing, it already shows that it comes with AT&T 3G. Anyways, I call tech support yesterday, and they were useless. They couldn't even find my order in the system. I was on the train, so I couldn't open the keyboard at the moment, but I did when I got home and didnt see any WWAN card, but I wasn't exactly sure of what i was looking for. Anyways, the box it came in has the configuration on the outside. I took a pic with my iPhone, so its crap - no macro settings - but if you can somehow read the blur, the 3rd option down is AT&T 3G. There is also "WWAN Misc Part", "WWAN Misc Parts", and "ATT Option". So I'm assuming it comes with the built in hardware. It came with an AT&T 3G sim card already in the machine.  However, the machine isn't detecting the hardware. FN+F5 only shows wifi & bluetooth. I go into the bios, and I don't see a WWAN option anywhere. I read somewhere that one guy had to update his bios to get it to show/work. I'm assuming my bios would already be updated though. Did they just not install the hardware?  I figured I would get better support here before calling them again

Answer:X200 & AT&T 3G WWAN...Not detecting wwan

I have an X200 with AT&T WWAN and it works fine. A couple of things to check: My configuration shows = 42X6331 L1 WWAN Intg AT&T (3G); 42V8251 L1 COPT AT&T USA; 43Y3864 L! COPT WWAN MiscPartsIn the Thinkvantage - Mobile Broadband Connect - you should get a screen that has a "sign up" button and a "close" button. With the wireless power switch "on" (switch on left side of laptop) click the "signup" button. It will check the status of your card. If you have not signed up for service, it will NOT show you any signal strength, you must sign up for the service and the network has to put the ESN (Electronic Serial Number) of your card into the system for it to work. Do not try and use the AT&T Communications Manager software because it will not work with the Ericsson radio in the laptop. Just my experience.

Hi, I'm a happy owner of a Dell E5270 and on The base plate there's a fingerprint sensor. However, when I install the recommended drivers there are no biometric devices. What is visible (in device manager) is Dell Control Vault w/o fingerprint sensor. Is it possible that there is a sensor but that The system lacks the optional fingerprint unit inside the laptop housing? There are no exclamation Marks in the device manager.
Secondly I've found the Dell DW5811E 3P10Y wwan card for the dell e5270 at a bargain price but i would like to know where to finf the cables in the housing? .

Thx!

I just placed an order a T410 with Mobile Broadband Gobi 2000 GPS 3G.I selected Open SIM card for Verizon May I ask if this card support GSM (e.g. able to use GPRS, EDGE and 3G)? Is it unlock and could be use with any GSM carriers around the globe? (I am frequent traveller and have to switch the mobile number quite often) Thanks for the information, I appreciated!James [Update]: I just called the Technical support to ask about this and the technician told me that, I cannot use other SIM card than Verizon one. This means I have to stick with Verizon Open SIM forever???? Is it true???

Are there any Lenovo engineers on the board that have knowledge of the GOBI WWAN chipset? The GOBI website lists the newer T series as machines that support GOBI, but no one at the support line knows anything about GOBI. I need to know if the Verizon UNDP card is actually a GOBI card before I order it, and if it will work with my 2765-T2U. I want to use Sprint here in the states, but I am going to Europe in two weeks and I want to use an HSDPA carrier such as Vodaphone while I'm there. I dont know if I should order the card because I cant seem to confirm anything at all. The phone support people are nice but admit to knowing nothing about it..I've talked to several of them and they told me to come here and find an engineer! Thanks for any help you might provide! Matt

Hi guys,I have a t410s with gobi 2000 and t-mobile sim card with unlimited data plan. Is there any way I can make T-Mobile USA SIM Card to work with ThinkPad Gobi 2000. I followed the topic"Thinkpad + T-Mobile = WORKS!" posted by "LoveIsMe ". I connected with T-MOBILE, but I only can surf t-mobile homepage. Is there any ways I can get rid of this limitation? Thanks.

Answer:Gobi 2000 + T-mobile

You probably need to configure a custom profile in Access Connections to get it working. However, you will not be able to get 3G speeds on T-Mobile with the Gobi 2000 since it does not support T-Mobile's 1700mhz 3G band.

Hi everyone, I just bought a X120e (0596CTO). It is mobile broadband upgradable, and so I searched the wireless accessories to find a suitable card. Both the GOBI 2000 and 3000 were listed as compatible. So naturally I bought the 3000 since its the newer version. When I received the machine I did all of the Windows and Lenovo updates. Then I popped the back off and put the GOBI 3000 in there but when I booted up I got an unauthorized part error and that the startup was halted. So I went to the Lenovo driver website and manually downloaded the BIOS update utility and the GOBI 2000/3000 driver utility. The BIOS update said I had the latest BIOS and the GOBI utility didn't install because no wireless card was detected. So I called tech support and they told me first off that the GOBI 3000 is not even listed only the 2000 (wrong!) and then he asks me "Are you sure this machine is broadband upgradable". Yes! It's listed as a perk right on the sales page. Plus where did he think I was shoving the card into (the RAM slot?) :-)  I'm usually nice, but this guy was irritating since he was incredibly slow and essentially accusing me of having mindlessly buying incompatible devices. When he says that there is nothing he can do for me, I tell him that I guess I'll exchange it, but that they should fix the sales webpage. He doesn't believe me! (because the PSREF website has it all listed differently). So I walk him through how it was that I came upon the GOBI... Read more

hey mariner, welcome to the forums and indeed Qualcomm did release a 4G compatible card, as whether or not Lenovo will be selling the card is hard to say.as Lenovo will normally run test on the card to ensure compatibility before selling it.

Question: Gobi 3000 problems

Hello,   I have a new W520 and my Gobi 3000 broadband modem keeps dissapearing. I get an errors about a USB device problem and in Hardware Devices it is listed with a USB error code 43. I have to power down the computer and reboot to get it to show back up. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes after booting to dissapear and other times a few hours. Very sporadic. Interestingly, it never dissapears when I am using the modem and have an active connection to AT&T. It only dissapears while I am connected via wifi. This is most confusing to see a device malfunction only when it is not in use. It is annoying that I have to shutdown and reboot to switch over to it when I lose my wifi signal. I am using an exisiting AT&T sim with a laptop connect account I have had for years. When the Gobi 3000 is connected it works very well. Any suggestions before I call Lenovo technical support? My guess is that either the drivers are immature, or I have a defective Gobi 3000.

Answer:Gobi 3000 problems

please try these 2 things
1.  in device manager, double click on the device, go to the power management tab, and UNCHECk the option for "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
2.  in power manager, DISABLE the option for USB selective suspend.  this option is in the advanced settings of your power profile.

try 1 first, if that doesn't work then try 2.  I'm not suggesting this is a long-term solution, i'm just trying to collect information about what the problem could be.

Where can I buy a unlocked GOBI 5000? The only ones I see on Lenovo.com is $200 for either the Verizon or AT&T brands.. I need one that works with T-mobile

Answer:Where to buy a unlocked GOBI 5000?

What region and network are you planing to use internet in? T-Mobile operates in 3 LTE frequency bands in the US - B2, B4, B12 (for B12 the company planned to start operating just in July 2014) and 3 bands in the EU - B3, B7, B20, in depends of the region and license type. But Gobi 5000 (Sierra Wireless em7355) supports only 2 bands of 6 above - B2 and B4.At the same time Sierra Wireless em7345 LTE card (another one card for the new line Lenovo notebooks) supports 5 bands of 6 above, except of B12. So, there are no advantages for em7355 if you are not planning to work in Sprint LTE network and 3g CDMA/EV-DO networks of US carriers.Supported frequency bands isn't a "locking" feature. It's a design, the set of components, filters. Purchase the card you need on shop.lenovo or altarnate resources.

Will a Gobi 3000 work in a W510 inplace of the existing Gobi 2000?

Answer:Gobi 3000 in W510

From my experience with older machines, it will, provided only that the BIOS is white-list patched; otherwise the system will not boot up and would report "unauthorized PCI express card detected" or the like. In short, Gobi 3000 will not work unless your BIOS is patched such that it bypasses the white-list detection.

It now looks like Lenovo is now only offering the Gobi 4000 AT&T version withthe new X1 Carbons. I have several questions about using the Gobi 2000/3000 modems on the X120e: 1) Must I buy the Gobi 3000 from the Lenovo website, or will the Gobi 2000 work on the X120e? Also if I get it from another vendor will it be the same (have the same form factor to fit)? 2) Others have posted that the Gobi 2000 is unlocked (works with carriers around the world), is that the case for the 3000? 3) For installation on the X120e, how accessible is the SIM on the 2000/3000? I may have to switch out the SIM frequently and having to open up the computer to get to it would not be feasible.

Hi baldursgate and welcome to the community,

As far as accessibility goes, here's how to get to the slot.

I'm not sure about your other questions, except to say that whatever card you put in there should be a Lenovo branded card or you may get an unauthorized card error at bootup.

Ok so to start off my Model is T420 ok so this is my second gobi i've Might've ruined due to how sensitive the hardware is - ok so the history goes that i've instsalled windows 8 (iso provided from MS's secretive (idk if it is a secretive onedrive or not)one drive) and upgraded to 8.1 and it instaslled perfect with all drivers onboard from Lenovo System Updater Uitlity and after a fight with bluetooth not shutting down i've decied to go back to OEM system and the first thing i noticed when going to check in device manager(habbit) is Gobi 3000 not installing drivers with a code 10 so the question i ask... Is it possible that the transition from win 8 - 8.1 - back to OEM win 7 did something hardware wise to the gobi? also sorry if i spelled something wrong - that's what happens when you take 5MGx2 melatonin

Answer:Sensitive Gobi 3000? or ???

Ok so I found out that my gobi /3g module might be a windows 8/8.1 onesince the windows 7 version of the driver doesn't install the driver on windows 7 but the windows 8/8.1 version of the driver installs just fine on both windows 7 pro x64 and windows 8/8.1 pro x64and yes I've run the recovery dvd's a few times which is windows 7 pro and the gobi doesn't look to be installed when checking device manager Each of those times -I think someone might be handing out modified gobi 3000's or in short 3g module's to fit in on a certain driver made for another system instead of it's original system (it's what I think am not sure)so in short case closed.

I have a number of Thinkpad x131e notebook PCs and need to order a WWAN module for it.  The only supported WWAN mPCI-e card listed is the Gobi 3000 MC8355 model, which is the slower 3G modem.  Has anyone used the GOBI 4000 or 5000 series LTE modems? I've seen posts about Lenovo whitelisting certain hardware, but I can't seem to find that list.  Are there electrical limitations that would prevent Lenovo from whitelisting the LTE modems?  If not, this type of hardware lock would be a deal breaker for any future Thinkpad orders for my company. Hardware is Thinkpad x131e Type 3372 Thanks,Jay

x131e doesn't support Gobi 4000 or 5000 or any other LTE wwan cards officially. Take out your battery from your tablet. Check behind your tablet to see if there's a simcard inserted in the simcard slot. That may be what's causing you the problem with SIM card found. If it's there, remove it.

For the past week my Verizon connection won't disconnect.  If you click disconnect in the Windows control panel and in VZ access manager it does not complete the process and stays connected.  No error, just doesn't disconnect. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the driver and VZ Access Manager.  No change. Interesting, I uninstalled the Lenovo driver and VZ Access Manager.  Then I installed the Lenovo driver.  As soon as the Lenovo driver was installed Verizon was connected and I cannot disconnect. In Windows, under properties, I have selected "Do not automatically connect" and in VZ Access Manager I have selected "NDIS - Manually connect".  Does not have an impact.   It's like the connect switch is forced on and I don't know why.  I am out of ideas and need some of yours.  This is an X201 with Windows 7 and the latest drivers and VZAM version.  It's a domain machine too.   Thoughts? Thanks! Peter
