Question: Is trackpoint durable ?

It is my first thinkpad and was wondering what older users would say for it...

Preferred Solution: Is trackpoint durable ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Is trackpoint durable ?

Hi beickus,It is in my standpoint but you don't have to push it hard to test it's limits, play it gently and use soft hands to use it. A simple touch works best, you don't really have to rest your finger on it. Hope it helps.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

I need to store some copied CD's somewhere away from the house in case of fire or other problem that destroys the ones at the house. I have a storage unit that isn't heated but it's inside a building. The building is unheated. I'm not sure how cold it gets but it does get pretty cold. Would the CD's be okay over there? Would the data be okay? If I let them reach room temperature before using them would that work?

hello- asus and gigabyte are selling motherboards that are supposed to be much more durable because of better capacitors (longer life) and better power for the cpu by using more than three phases / more than three capacitors to supply the power to the cpu, smoothing out the power and thus reducing heat.

what other motherboard companies have developed exceptionally durable motherboards?

any opinions on these more durable motherboards? thx!

Answer:Durable motherboards?

If The Shoe Fits....Make a Decision.......

There numerous examples of mobo failures due to capacitor failure here and I'm sure around the web. Gigabyte and Asus have apparently undertaken the issue and tried to do something about it. Build a better mousetrap so to speak.
Gigabyte seems to be the rising star in motherboards at the moment, popular with gaming types and receiving very favorable reviews.
So, here's my question, if you can find a board between these two makers that would meet your needs, why not patronize them, rather than confuse the issue and yourself by adding more additional choices than you are likely able to process? Manufacturers are in it for the money to be sure, but if they have put forth the extra effort to give you what you want, why not give them your business.
Asus is currently (I don't believe), not enjoying it's former glory, so for me I'm looking at a Gigabyte for my next project.
I just bought a closeout Foxconn to replace a board which failed in a BIOS update. It worked perfectly. Should I buy another Foxconn? Do you see where too many decisions can lead to too many possible conclusions?

Can anyone recommend a durable, heavy-duty laptop that has a high tolerance for temperature, shock, and extreme conditions?

Is the Panasonic ToughBook the only choice?

Answer:Need Durable Laptop Recommendations

The ToughBook is famous for it's ruggedness. I think Toshiba makes (or used to make) a similar product. You can also check with Asus. They make pretty good laptops. IBM Thinkpads are rugged by nature. They aren't built like a ToughBook and aren't designed to survive the elements like a Toughbook, but they are pretty freekin' tough.

Hello everyone-

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the most durable, portable external hdd over 1tb for around or under $150? I'm looking for something portable to carry around with me as I often need large amounts of video, music, and other media to do my work; so durability is a must. I would prefer usb 3.0, but 2.0 is fine if the hard drive itself is reliable and well-made. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Not sure if this is the right topic, but I need some help. I go through headphones very quickly, and for a rather embarrassing reason.

I chew on the wires. Seriously. I'm way too old for this, but I get bored and chew the wires on earbuds, even when I don't use them!

I want something:

A: Under $20, but under $15 is optimal
B: Thick, durable wiring and connector.

Nom nom nom.

I've had pretty good luck with a very old Sony MDR-V1. Cheap, relatively comfy (even if the pads are cracked), and good enough sound for me!

Answer:Cheap, durable earbuds and/or/ headphones

Sounds like it might be time to pay a little extra
and get some wireless headphones.
You can see different types on ebay.

Hey guys, currently looking for a durable mouse, since my old one is getting broken due to a modding tool. A short backstory of it, more than a week ago, I reinstalled the C&C General series, and I use the worldbuilder for modifying the maps for the game, but the problem is that it's a mouse intensive software which means that I click a lot which leads to mouses getting broken. My current mouse sometimes doesn't respond when I click it or sometimes when I click it, it's like double clicking it, it's somewhat annoying sometimes, especially when I'm using the modding tool. So any suggestions on a new mouse or is there any way to fix the current one?
For the temperature question. I always thought that if I open my case, I would get cooler temperatures, so I did it but I was wrong, when my case is open, my hard drive temperatures is getting around 44~46 ?C. A week ago, I left for an overnight, so I closed the case and after I came home the next day, I didn't remove the cover since I felt a bit lazy and due to the new position of the PC, but with that laziness, I noticed that my HD temperatures got cooler too, now I get 38~40 ?C. My explanation why is the "open case" is not effective is that the heat is actually getting trapped since there's a CD/DVD reader above my hard drive and the heat is not being sucked out by the fan. So, any explanations why is that the open case is not effective at all (other than the dangers of dust)?

i have a 1 TB seagate expansion, its a 3.5" i accidentally kicked one of the wires and snapped the usb port off so now im looking to buy a new enclosure, one that can take a beating.

im looking for the most durable enclosure i can find, that will also keep it relatively cool. esata/usb 3.0 would be nice but not needed.

i know ssd is the most durable option but im not looking to buy a new drive and even if i was gettin a TB is way outside my price range, and i need the space.

at this point im considering fashioning one from wood, stuffing it with chunks of rubber, installing a fan and taking the chip/plug interface from the cheapest enclosure i can find.:major does this sound like a bad idea? .. :-D

Answer:most durable/ strongest external enclosure??

There are plenty of metal enclosures on the market, but almost all of them have the same weak point as the one that broke: the connectors. My recommendation, if possible, would be to put the drive somewhere where it can't be broken as easily.

I have an HP Pavillion that is a few years old that I want to remove the innards from and put into a new case. The fan is too loud, it's clunky, and the airflow could be better. Also, I just figure I wouldn't mind getting a larger case if I later want to do a DIY build.

So, my budget is around $50. I don't care how it looks really. I just want it to be sturdy, be quiet, and cool alright.

Answer:Need a cheap, durable, no frills case

You are going to have to gwt another Motherboard to get a newcase because that is a prebuilt case.

Hi, I'm looking to buy a 16gb flash drive.
Which one is most durable among Sandisk?
I gather the Cruzer is recommended.
But is it really better than, say, Fit or other Sandisk models?

Yes, i'm aware of Kingston and Corsair brands, so if by a miracle there's a good buy these days on Kingston or Corsair 16gb flash drives, all the better.

Yet I still have my first PC (Compaq Presario 6000) and it still works other than a bad power supply. It still starts up and boots windows, but it is very slow. I am looking for a phone under Rs. 9000 ( US $ 150 approx. ) which would last me for the next 3 to 4 years. I have shortlisted the Lumia 625 which currently costs Rs. 8999 (i.e. US $ 146.38) in India. My main concern is that, whether the non-removable battery of Lumia 625 would last that long.
I am planning to use the phone mainly for editing documents, reading e-books and listening to music, apart from making calls

Answer:Is Lumia 625 Durable? Will its non-removable battery last in the long run?

To ask any phone to last 3-4 years and maintain a good battery is rather questionable. For batteries to last long a lot depends on the environment their in on a daily basis and the frequency of charging. Saying that, all batteries have a shelf life. Most batteries start to deteriorate after 1 year of use and should last approximately 5 years with ever decreasing hold in charge. Some are worse than this.
You can purchase a portable charger as an option.
Also, keep in mind with regards to Office on WP, it isn't the best thing going and it could be frustrating if you think you'll get more capabilities than what it currently has. I highly recommend trying it first. We're hoping for a better version in the future but we don't know yet.

I am in need of a cheap, durable USB flash drive. This drive needs to be durable because it will be going to a person who tends to abuse technology. The flash drive does not need to be fast and will be used for storing pictures. 1-2GB should be fine. Budget= less than $15
I prefer the flash drive to be cheap because, chances are that this individual may still break the drive regardless of durability.

Hi Forum, Not being picky n all, but I've had laptops in my time and I noticed very distinct problems with the X201 i bought. I was hunting for a new laptop, and it was either gonna be the MacBookPro 13" or the X201. And seeing the advertisements that lenovo is such a durable design, being able to withstand most things, I went for the lenovo. Now I just got it a few days ago, and have found so many problems with it regarding its design. FIRST - when I opened the box up, read the instructions to plug in AC adapter, then turn on....I noticed that my AC adapter was making this weird chirping/buzzing sound; as if it was short circuiting inside. I kept it charging, and it was able to charge fully. But I checked through the forums, and apparently AC adapters aren't suppose to make that sound...so I called up, and the next day they sent me a new AC adapter...and the adapter works fine now - silent....GOOD Customer service BUT in regards with the actual laptop....Sold build, i THINK NOT.SECONDLY I noticed before opening up the screen, the right side is a lot more LOOSE than the left. As in the right side doesn't close tightly. The left is fine. Its as if the screen is lifted up abit more on the right side...BAD THIRDLY,  when trying to open up the screen, i heard a 'Click' sound when pushing the screen up with my hand near the left latch. Its as if there is something loosely connected there, and I noticed when I squeeze that area, the plastic inner ... Read more

I am sure it's a driver issue, as it only happened after I installed a controller driver for my old Saitek P990. The problem is, I have already uninstalled the P990 drivers and tried to re-install my USB 3.0 drivers, but they are still not working. What i have not really explained is that USB 3.0 is sending power to my devices, such as my 1 terabyte hard drive (Yes, it is a USB 3.0 hard drive!), and other 3.0 devices. I have two front USB 3.0 ports, and 2 back ones. My problem is that USB 2.0 works but 3.0 doesn't. Also, Gigabyte's App Centre says the driver can't release to failure. I think that's just because it's an old crappy program that they haven't updated yet. Can someone help quickly? I need those extra ports for multiple keyboards (don't ask) and a printer.

Click on the search icon and type Control. This will show the classic (desktop version) Control Panel. Click on View by Large icons to see all controls. Click on Device Manager. Some USB devices will have a yellow mark (problem). Click on them and press Del to uninstall them. When done, click on the computer icon at the top of the tree. Right-click and select Scan for hardware changes. Windows will attempt to reinstall the USB 3.0 devices. Hopefully it will succeed and everything will be working again.

Question: Trackpoint cap

I'm not sure if this is the place I'm supposed to post this. I absolutely hate the trackpoint when I type.  I type quite fast and I hit the trackpoint every once in a while -- but this is enough to really get on my nerves.  It's absolutely distracting.  Imagine typing out your thoughts then all of a sudden you hit the thing, get distracted, then irritated, and your thoughts gone.  ThinkPads are supposed to help you think.  The trackpoint unfortunately doesnt...  Are there a replacement tips that's depressed enough (and maybe colored black...) so that I dont hit it accidentally when I type?  Removing the tip works fine -- but it looks so ugly without it (makes it look like i'm using a broken equipment). Oh and I dont mind if the replacement cap will render the trackpoint unusable.  I just need it low enough so I dont accidentally hit it.

You can disable the trackpoint by pressing Fn + F8 in windows and then select trackpad only. You can also disable trackpoint from BIOS menu.

Question: Trackpoint gone...

I did the usual "Windows update" this morning. After the installation had completed I noticed that my Trackpoint has "disappeared"! There is no reaction whatsoever when pressing the red dot and I can't control the mouse with it any more. I then checked in the control panel (no trace) and then had to learn, that it doesn't even exist in the device manager, either. I then rebooted, no change. I then even powered off and reboot from power off again, still no trackpoint! And after I downloaded the trackpoint driver from the Lenovo drivers download site and wanted to (re-)install the driver, I got an error message "this driver can not be installed on non-trackpoint systems". ?!? What? What the %@[email protected]#*%?  Where has my trackpoint gone??? How come, that it has completely disappeared? How do I get this thing working again? Edited: I later noticed, that a part of that Windows Update apparently was a new "Wacom Two Finger Touch" driver. Might that have to do with my disappeared Trackpoint? Michael PS.: Boy - is this annoying to have to work without Trackpoint!

Answer:Trackpoint gone...

I just had to learn that there is a Fn-key (F8) that allows to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad. I must have accidentally operated that button without noticing (in fact, I hadn't even known before that there IS such an option...).Its setting was on "Touchpad only". After re-enabling the trackpoint there everything came back to normal. Wheew. What a relieve! :-) And it (most probably) had nothing to do with the Windows Update - just an unlucky conincidence! Michael

E420S, Cannot get either to work. Cannot enable trackpoint or touchpad in UltraNav.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad

Hi, ezedoh

The first thing I would recommend is the removal of the UltraNav driver from the system. This is best accomplished by using an external mouse to navigate the system. To uninstall the UltraNav driver, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver for controlling the mouse. This should reinstate the touchpad to working order. If not, then continue using an external mouse for now.

Once the UltraNav driver has been removed, I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

I know I just posted a thread, but I figured that issue is global enough to warranty its own. But this one seems to be specific to me.I'm a new Thinkpad (and trackpoint) user, and the trackpoint is very choppy for me. It seems to skip frames. For example, making a circular motion with the trackpad results in a continuous, smooth motion. But not so with the trackpoint. It seems to be micro-jumping (or skipping frames as I prefer to call it). This is easily noticeable when holding down the middle trackpoint button and attempting to scroll a page. The page does not scroll smoothly at all (has nothing to do with smooth scrolling, that's something else and not what I'm talking about). Now this isn't just with this X220. Before the X220 I briefly owned a x120e that had this EXACT same problem. I asked about it and people told me that is not normal. So I returned it and got this X220, but it's the same problem. The weird thing is that while this choppiness is present in Windows, it was just fine during the Windows install process. I've tried: disabling the trackpad, reducing/increasing trapoint sensetivity, updating drivers, removing drivers and reinstalling, bumping the priority of the driver to high. None helped. What are the chances I'd receive two machines with the same problem?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

Disabling the trackpad from the BIOS fixed the issue it seems (its definitely much smoother). Diasbling it within Windows did not help. If I recall correctly disabling the trackpad in the x120e from the BIOS was not an option. Too bad. But odd that others do not have this problem. Oh and my palm was not resting on the trackpad

I T440s which I updated to Windows 10.  I updated the Lenovo drivers after updating and I have the latest Trackpaad/trackpoint drivers.  I want to use the track point but not the touchpad.  When I go into settings and choose either "Classic Trackpoint" or "Trackpoint Only", the buttons on the trackpad do not work.  Help, Please.

Is there any way to use the trackpoint on Lenovo computers as a joystick?  I.e. a device that would be useful for a flight simulator?  Essentially, it wouldn't be moving the mouse along a line based on the direction you're pushing it in with a speed based on your finger pressure,  but rather moving the mouse to a stationary position on the screen based on the direction and pressure you're pushing on it with.

Answer:Using the trackpoint as a joystick?

Download the latest version of ppjoy - it comes with a mouse to joystick driver that works well with trackpoint

Hi all! The new s430 just arrived, containing some annoying problems :/ . One of them is the following: The Touchpad and the Trackpoint are not working at all. I can t de/activate them in the Win7-system-control. The drivers are up-to-date. Could it be a driver/software-problem? Greetings,Bvbnudel

Answer:No Touchpad and Trackpoint

Hi Bvbnudel, Touchpad and Trackpoint are indeed different components, there is a little chance that will fail altogether. I would suggest re-install UltraNav driver and check with antivirus programs. After just a few months of usage, my W510's TrackPoint cap came loose. I ordered a three-part TrackPoint cap collection on eBay. Alas, the caps don't fit.

No surprise if you look at this photo of a non-W-series keyboard with the cap removed. The TrackPoint post in my W-series ThinkPad is yellow rather than black and significantly smaller:

Link to picture

Also, the W-series is prominently absent from the list of supported models in Lenovo's specs of the replacement caps.

Anyone know if replacement caps for the W-series are available?

Also, how would I attach the cap? Just pushing it back didn't really do it for my original cap, it kept coming loose.

Answer:Replacement TrackPoint cap?

some of the cap collection on ebay is fake. The W510 uses the same keyboard as mine T400s, and the real Lenovo trackpoint from T60 fits the T400s keyboard perfectly.

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.

I have a T60 laptop (purchased Jun 2006) which works great except for the trackpoint.  For the last few months, the trackpoint has not been working.  The touchpad works. Here are the steps I took to troubleshoot - 1.  Updated Ultra NAV driver and Utility software (the latest from lenovo website).  Actually un-installed old version and      re-installed new version2.  Updated the BIOS to the newer version and ensured that Trackpoint/NAV is set to enabled in BIOS3.  Replaced the keyboard (assumed it was a hardware problem).  During replacement, I made sure it was properly      seated to rule out a loose connection.4.  The motherboard was replaced last year (due to a another problem) so I assume it may not be the source of problem I have searched this and other websites but am out of luck.  Appreciate if any one can provide more leads/ideas to fix this.  I am not sure if this is software related. Thanks

Answer:Please help - Trackpoint not operational

how about the mouse properties is it enabled there

Now that the 5th gen Thinkpad is here, the decline of the trackpoint becomes ever clearer.  Frankly, most of us would not be buying Thinkpads if they didn't have the trackpoint.  That's the X1's main advantage.  But Lenovo keeps making it worse.  First, the trackpoint caps that will fit the gen 4 and 5 come in only one, unpopular, variant and you can't get the soft rim version.  But more importantly, Lenovo keeps on degrading the software control of the trackpoint.  It used to be that you could adjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint, making it more or less stiff.  Even the softest setting was inadequate but it was something.  In the 5gen there is no option to change the stiffness or responsiveness of the trackpoint's movements at all.  Lenovo: hear your customers!! Please make the trackpoint MORE not less adjustable.

Open 'Control Panel > Mouse'.
Open the 'ThinkPad' or 'ThinkPad UltraNav' tab.
At the top next to 'Pointing Options', click 'Advanced'
In the 'General' tab, you will see 'TrackPoint pointing speed', adjust the slider,

Depending on which Ultranav version you have installed the steps may be slightly different, but they should be roughly the same.

Question: Trackpoint problem

First of all, sorry if this questions been asked and answered. I've been searching off an on for several weeks for any online help to a trackpoint annoyance I've been having with no luck. I'm on a T61p running XP. (I upgraded the stock Vista, following an online guide). I have the Ultranav utility installed (I can see and change the options for the trackpoint/touchpad in the mouse control panel). Both the trackpoint and touchpad work. However, every once in a while the trackpoint just becomes totally unresponsive and the mouse pointer refuses to respond or move. For like 3-4 seconds. What's odd is that when this happens, the touchpad still works. (I'm trying to move or scroll with the trackpoint / topmost scroll button+trackpoint with now response, but use other finger to test touchpad and that responds.) It's really odd and really annoying. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any advice? Thanks!

yeah i have that problem, and i have a friend with the same problem. its just because the rubber doesnt stay seated right on the piece is sitting on, if you push on it too hard. thats my guess, but i could be wrong. i notice if i dont push on the rubber part very hard it keeps that from happening. for some reason i always push straight down on the rubber piece and thats when it does it the most.

Hi All,Could someone help me to identify if my trackpoint on the T420S is broken? The images are here,http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7643/fig1k.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/199/fig2h.jpg  In the first image, the red trackpoint can easily come out of the fixture on the keyboard. If I take out the red cap, there is a black thing as shown in second image located on key "G."  I try to jam it into the fixture, but did not work out.Should this black thing need to always stay in the fixture? Is it just be glued to the fixture?Should I ask Lenovo for a service? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Is my trackpoint broken?

The images don't work, however, I think I understand.  The Trackpoint is a red rubber cap that just fits on a black plastic post between the G, H, and B keys.  It lifts right off of the black plastic post.  The post is a permanent part of the keyboard.  The "eraser" head is user replaceable when necessary. The underside of the Trackpoint "eraser" is hollowed out to fit over the black post.  It is snug, but does not require "jamming."  When in place, does it work?

OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

Good afternoon all,
We have an older IBM thinkpad 600x, that my husband uses to play simple off line games and read a few emails. The past few days when booting we are getting the error #08611.
From what I have been able to find I believe that this has something to do with the trackpoint.
We use a wireless mouse with this so do not need the track point. Can someone please tell me how to disable the trackpoint?
Thanks!!!

Question: Choppy Trackpoint

Hello, Got x120e the other day and I have one question: This is my first Thinkpad (and first time witha trackpoint) - the trackpoint moves kind of choppy. It's not smooth movements like with the trackpad, as if it's missing frames or something. It's still perfectly useable but seems odd. Is this normal?

Answer:Choppy Trackpoint

No, it's not normal.  Mine moves as smooth as the touchpad (if not smoother) and responds to how much I move the stick.  Have you looked into the UltraNav Properties field of the trackpoint?  I'll leave this up to the experts to help you here.  This is my first Lenovo product too. But I'll like to comment that I wish the trackpoint would be at positions where your fingers will be while holding the machine.  The middle position works fine for a bigger laptop, but this is an ultraportable. Remember the IBM PalmTopPC110?  http://www.komotch2.com/tps/pt110.htm And the Toshiba Libretto:  http://www.silverace.com/libretto/libretto100j.jpg Some models' trackpoints are even located at behind the screen (i.e. on the lid).PalmTopPC110

Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

Answer:trackpoint did't work

Hi Oshri,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with track point not working in your Lenovo T410 laptop
The Fn-key (F8) allows the to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad.

If the trackpoint is no longer working, this may be a good option to check before investigating device manager, updating / reinstalling trackpoint drivers or rebooting as discussed above.

Pressing Fn-F8 brings up the ultranav menu and allows the user to cycle through different trackpoint and touchpad configuration options.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

If I remove the entire palm rest and touchpad panel, I'm able to get the trackpoint to work, however once the touchpad is connected, the trackpoint just stops working.

I tried to enable it on the Ultranav program but it just doesn't work.

I tried the mouse properties and the trackpoint function is greyed out as shown below.

When I went into the device manager, the trackpoint is not detected.

I tried installing all versions of Ultranav, tried BIOS updates, tried cleaning the connectors, and still can't get the trackpoint to work together with the touchpad.

Answer:T61 - can't enable TrackPoint

Hi Dyna, Welcome to the forum. When you say Trackpoint doesn't work, do you mean:1. That trackpoint itself is not workingor 2. The left click, right click and scroll buttons associated with the trackpoint doesn't work. ========Also, you did not mention whether your trackpad works or not. Finally, what happens when you disable the trackpad in the BIOS menu? Does that affect your trackpoint and associated buttons' behaviours?

For the past week or two it seems that the mouse clicks on its own on my T420. This is in TrackPoint only mode (TouchPad disabled) with press to select disabled. This issue is reproducible as it generally happens right after a normal click or unclick. For example, if I highlight text in a word processor by clicking and dragging my cursor over the text when I release the button the system registers a phantom click within the next second or so. I also have noticed these phantom clicks after middle clickling. Does this sound like a possible driver issue or should I go ahead and call to have a tech come out and replace parts?

Answer:TrackPoint clicks on its own

@nibs,Try uninstalling UltraNav, reboot the laptop then install it back and see if it helps. If problem persist then I guess its time to contact the techs.

I had an X201 and last year upgraded to the x240. Along with the loss of the physical trackpoint buttons, lenovo also drastically changed the trackpoint hardware. The trackpoint height was shortened, the overall sensitivity/acceleration was drastically reduced, and the "press-to-select" functionality was removed. Does anyone know if those issues have also been addressed in the new x250? That is, is this basically the old (better) trackpoint that was used in prevoius models (e.g., the x201), or is it the same (**bleep**ty) trackpoint as in the x240, just with physical buttons.  Thanks,Chris

Answer:x250 Trackpoint Question

Also, I tried to ask this question in a sales chat, and got the response "the trackpad functionality has been designed to reproduce that of older models."   I said I wasn't interested in the trackpad, just the trackpoint, and asked explicitly whether I could register a mouse click by pressing the trackpoint.  That caused the rep (or bot) to disconnect... after two full minutes of waiting I was requed for a new rep.  Thanks Lenovo for that great customer service experience.

If you need to reinstall the Trackpoint driver for your unit, here is the link below: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4KMUYL Download and save this file to the desktop and the open the folder and run the setup.exe file You might also need the Trackpoint Accessibility Driver, which can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4Z9QVD See if installing these two drivers will help you. If the drivers are installed correctly and you are still having problems with the trackpoint scrolling, it could possibly be a mechancial issue and the part would need replacement. Let me know if this helps you any. Mark

Hi!First: this is no problem-request but a solution for everybody with the same problem. I had the problem, that TrackPoint scrolling did not work in some programs. There are some posts available about correcting this issue, but there seems to be a change in the driver, so there needs to be done some changes. I mainly will refer to this post from Elad Karako, because it has a list of programs, where scrolling does not work. This post, the same as others, recommends to edit the file TP4table.dat in the C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP directory. I just updated my T540p with a 3-button touchpad and had the problem, that in some applications the TrackPoint scrolling does not work (Notepad++, Total Commander, ...)Unfortunately the rules did not work. But in newer drivers there is a further option available. The flags has been updated with the option16 Rule indicate the apply this to IBM Stick Scrolling when ScrollMethood is Synaptics. This means, that if the rule should apply to the scrolling done with TrackPoint, the flag needs to be increased by 16. I also had the problem, that the listed option WheelStd did not work in my case. After playing around I found out that Standard worked. So I updated the rules to the following and added them to the upper part of the file TP4table.dat: ; Process Explorer
*,*,*,*,*,PROCEXPL,Standard,0,25
; Notepad++ and Notepad2
*,*,*,*,*,Scintilla,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad2U,Standard,0,25
*,*,*,*,*,Notepad++,Standard,... Read more

Answer:TrackPoint scrolling not working

Excellent detective work both here and with one line scrolling; the TP4table.dat compatibility listing doesn't seem to have been updated for a long time.

Hello, guys. I recently purchased the Thinkpad T420 and so far am very satisfied. I noticed a problem though. I wanted to use the track point so I pressed FN + F8 and nothing. Figured ok, I'll go to through the control panel. Pressed on the mouse option under devices and printers. There is no trackpoint tab or the nav. I clicked on all the tabs. All I have are wheel, hardware, pointing device, buttons, pointers, and pointer options. Please help! Before I had an old IBM thinkpad and the trackpoint worked. One of the greatest assets! Thanks.

Answer:t420 trackpoint does not work

Does anybody know of any third party programs to allow you to custom configure the Trackpoint right button?  I would love to change it from a right click to a "Browser Back" button to allow for easy web surfing.  Wouldn't it be awesome if you could hit that without moving your hands off the keyboard to go back one page in your web browser?

Hello, I've bought new ThinkPad t540p recently. I've never used Trackpoint before and found it is very useful. But one thing breaks my happiness about Trackpoint. It's terrible clicking on touchpad. As I know it's common problem. But when I deleted Ultranav drivers and my Windows started using default drivers, I've realized that Trackpoint cursor pointing + Touchpad tap-to-click performance are best of breed. Unfortunately, I've lost scrolling and gestures. Is it possible to configure the same behaviour (Trackpoint cursor pointing + Touchpad tap-to-click) on Ultranav drivers or not? Thank you.

Hi, I recently purchased a new Thinkpad and I new about the new Trackpad that has removed the physical buttons, but I thought that I could get used to it. But, I never will, not the way I have been using a Thinkpad for the last 15 years. When using the computer for work I never use the touchpad only the trackpoint with the physical buttons, I use all 3 of the buttons. These are my two first problems with the new trackpad. 1. The force that is needed to left or right click with the new "the whole trackpad is a button" is really annoying and i really really hate it.2. The sound of the button when pressing the whole trackpad is really annoying, you can almost type silently on the keybord, but when pressing the trackpad button it makes a very annoying sound. This is the third and most annoying problem, a real show stopper for me. 3. When I do real work on my computer I use both my thumbs for left vs right click. The problem with the new trackpad is that there is no physical buttons AND they area for the buttons are not clickable, the whole trackpad is a button meaning that it senses which thumb was last registered resting in that area. On my old Thinkpad I usually rested both my thumbs on the physical buttons and this is where the real problem begins. If i rest my left thumb on the area for the left "button" first and after this rest my right thumb in the area for the right "button" and then left click, there will be a right click instead, ... Answer:Using trackpoint with both thumbs on new Thinkpads

Wellcome to the club of frustrated trackpoint users. The new clickpad-solution just does not work for me. People who do not use the trackpoint seem to like it, but the whole point of buying a ThinkPad is getting void without a working solution for us trackpoint users.

The trackpoint on this e540 keeps moving after I let it go. The issue arrises when I move the cursor downwards - it then moves upwards on its own, sometimes for several seconds. This happens quite often, and when it happens it obviously makes clicking things hard. I guess it doesn't matter since I'm returning it anyway because of all the issues.

My E545 came with a rounded Trackpoint head. I want a concave one. I cannot find one or figure out how to order one. Do they exist? Where can I order it? Thanks.

Answer:Concave Trackpoint for E545

Good day.

Have a look at: http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/pd013643
I presume you're looking for the soft-rim type? When I searched the accessories page, I only came up with the soft-dome type, so you might want to call or chat with Sales. The number and link are at the top of the linked Sales page.

I've also seen 3rd-party sources, but I can't vouch for the quality or authenticity.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

I just got my new ThinkPad T440s, and I'm having some difficulties getting the Trackpoint to work properly. Whenever I power up the system, the Trackpoint is responsive for a minute or so and then completely stops working, while the touchpad works just fine. I have tried re-installing/ updating the Ultranav driver, but no luck. I have also tried a complete factory restore, and the problem remains.  I noticed that when I don't have the Ultranav driver installed, the trackpoint works a little while longer but then gets a bit crazy. By that I mean moving the cursor using either touchpad or trackpoint somehow ends up opening shortcuts, moving icons or the taskbar, etc. It's hard to explain, but it's like the cursor moves all over the screen rapidly "left-clicking" and "right-clicking" all over the place.  It's strange that when I'm going through the Windows installation prompts, the trackpoint seemed to work just fine. This and the fact that it works for a minute upon start-up make me think it's a software issue.  Does anyone have any suggestions that I could try? I haven't tried doing anything in the BIOS, if there's something that could be done. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:T440s Trackpoint problems

Hi zorero, You can check in the bios if the trackpoint is enabled but if it works sometimes it might be anyway. you should try to remove the keyboard, unplug the trackpad and replug it.It can be just just a connection problem where the plug is not properly attached to the motherboard. There is the link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual where you can find how to remove the keyboard: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t440s_hmm_en_sp40a25360_01.pdf Hope that helps, Vince.

Having trouble with the red trackpoint. How can I disable it? Thanks

Answer:R500 Trouble with the Red TrackPoint

Narges, welcome to the forum, which problems are you experiencing, maybe you could explain some more in order that members can help you solve them? If you really want to turn it off, (I have my touchpad turned off), you can do this in the UltraNav assistent. Start > Programs > ThinkVantage, or use the shortcut key combination of Fn + F8. Hope this helps

The trackpoint on my x120e just stopped working, along with the accompanying buttons just below the keyboard.  However, the touchpad and its two buttons still work.  (This happened while I was using the computer -- no apparent change to system files prompted it.) I tried Fn+F8 to turn the trackpoint back on -- I can select the option but it doesn't take effect.  In advanced options, the option to turn the trackpoint on is grayed out. I downloaded and installed the latest UltraNav driver; no improvement.  I also looked in BIOS options and didn't see anything related to enabling the trackpoint. Has anyone else had an issue with this, or is it likely an old-fashioned hardware problem? Thanks for your help.

Answer:X120e Trackpoint problem

hey kdl79,

try uninstall the ultranav driver and software as well as the current mouse drivers that is installed. let windows install its generic drivers.

test your trackpoint and mouse and see if it works, then visit our support page and reinstall the drivers+software

Hi,  The red trackpoint on my ThinkPad X1 is not as sensitive as expected. Does anyone know where to change the setting for the trackpoint? In old T60, they have productivity center to control these devices.  In X1 it seems there is no interface/software to do so. Thanks, wib10

Answer:X1 trackpoint setup problem

Hello wib10, welcome to Lenovo forums!

Do you run a factory installation?

The go into control panel, choose mouse, then you´ll see an UltraNav tab.

Click on it and you see options to adjust your TrackPoint/TrackPad

Kind regards

I just got my new X1, but found immediately that the buttons associated with trackpoint doesn't work. Actually only the left and middle buttons don't work, the right button works, so I guess it's not likely to be a software problem. Anyone has similar problem as this?

Answer:X1 trackpoint button problem

nope, you should have warranty still, just call up support and they should be able to help you, i.e. either to send you a keyboard for self replacement or send you off to the depot.

Over the week, the trackpoint cap on my ThinkPad X131e just popped off, I've been unable to fit it back on properly. Even if it does seem to fit, it's not as responsive as it was. It's stiffer than before, even on the sensitive settings set to max. Whoops.

A week or so ago the Trackpoint on my T60P (2007-AE7), running XP SP 3, started freezing a minute or two after booting the machine or waking it up.  Occasionally after a pause of a few minutes it will start working again on its own for a few seconds. I can?t relate the freezing to anything I changed on the machine.  And the machine doesn?t run hot ? I had a problem with the fan, which stopped working a couple of weeks ago; I removed, cleaned and oiled the fan, and it now works fine again. An external mouse I connected works fine at all times, as does the keyboard. What may provide a clue is that I normally only activate the Trackpoint alone without the Trackpad.  I notice that when both are active and the Trackpoint stops working, the Trackpad continues to work properly as do all the mouse buttons.                                                                                       Sometimes when the Trackpoint has stopped working and I activate the Trackpad, the Trackpoint will start working again for a little while.... Hello all,I just got my Thinkpad T420 two weeks ago. Solid laptop overall, but recently I have some problems with my touchpad and trackpoint. There is a big movemental gap of the cursor when using trackpoint, and the touchpad is unusable. This happened once last week but then it disappeared after I disabled and then re-enabled trackpoint/touchpad, changing sensivity... Yesterday it happened again and this time it wont disappear after applying the same method. I tried updating the drivers, as well as reset BIOS (boot to BIOS -> F9 -> save) but none helped. I'm dualbooting windows 7 & arch linux, and the problem is present on both of the operating systems. This is really frustrating. Can someone please give me some suggestions what I could do to get rid of this annoying bug. Thanks very much.

Hi all, I'm having some issues with TrackPoint in my X240.I am using 'trackpoint only' mode (not classic.. mode becaues it disables gestures - which are quite usefull btw) Problem is, that sometimes clickpad have problems with left click recognition. It is really annoying, I have to click few times to actually click.I think it is worse after last software updates (lenovo ultra nav) Does anyone have this issue too?  Maybe Lenovo can add 3 physical buttons to my X240?

Hi there, I've been using a T400 for around a year now. Previously, I could move the trackpoint and the touchpad at the same time (left hand on the trackpoint and right hand on the touchpad). I reformated, installed the drivers for both, and now if I am using the trackpoint and try to move the touchpad at the same time, there is about a 2 second delay before I get any movement from the touchpad. Any ideas? It is a really big annoyance because even if I am using the track point and stop moving it, and then immediately try and move the touchpad there is still a second where no movement happens, and I have to lift my finger and put it back down on the touchpad before the cursor moves. Thanks,-Ben

Answer:Using Touchpad and Trackpoint simultaneously.

I use the trackpoint and usually have both pad and trackpoint turned on.  Normally, i would have my palm resting on the pad while using the trackpoint.  If the pad reacted to my touch while i'm using the trackpoint, it would be quite annoying because the mouse would move unintentionally.  having approx 1-2 sec delay fixes the problem of unintentional movement.   So I thought it was supposed to work that way...

With the latest (4.64) Trackpoint driver installed the trackpoint is still unreliable after switch on/reboot. The driver was specifically supposed to fix this issue so are others still seeing the same problem? Note when the trackpoint works it is fine i.e. only upon start is there an issue, it is reliable once working.

I had recently done an update using ThinkVantage. It changed the behavior of my trackpoint (pressing the middle now doesnt scroll up and down). It does however put a small round picture and it seems to allow me to scroll on any direction EXCEPT in places where the location has a clickable link. This means that the scroll function of the trackpoing cannot be used in windows start menu, etc. The issue though is that when I try hit Fn+F8, then "manage settings" - it says "unable to connect to synaptics pointing driver..." etc. then it asks me if I "...want to uninstall the driver?" Also, in folder view, hitting the center button now drags the file instead of allowing me to scroll - which is an unexpected (i believe incorrect) behavior Is this supposed to happen? My laptop is the T410s, touchscreen.

Heads up to potential buyers.  The X300 trackpoint and touchpad are not fully functional when used with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, MS Access, Remote Desktop, and other mainstream applications.  This is true for both XP and Windows OS.  The built-in pointing devices operate like a mouse without a wheel - you can point and click, but you cannot scroll.  This has been a known problem since June of 2008, and has been brought to the attention of this forum numerous times without resulting in any known action by Lenovo.WFaz

Lenovo released a newer version of the UltraNav driver that shows applicability to every Thinkpad except the one I own.  Has anyone tried the driver version 11.1.21.0 (released in August 08) on the X300?  The one installed on my X300 is version 7.0.1602.5 - this one is shown as being the latest UltraNav driver for the X300 in the Lenovo (lack of) Support website.

Hi, I'm using touchpad instead of trackpoint and just wondering if it's possible to do a trackpoint buttons remap, so instead of LEFT/RIGHT-MOUSE-CLICK they would function as eg. BROWSER BACK/FORWARD ??? anybody heard about such remapper? (I tried the standard keyboard remappers and they didn't work)
