T400 with docking stations, ThinkPad Advanced Dock and ThinkPad Dock II

Question: T400 with docking stations, ThinkPad Advanced Dock and ThinkPad Dock II

Hello,I think of buying the ThinkPad T400 with one of these docking stations: ThinkPad Advanced Dock or ThinkPad Dock II.I have several technical questions and haven't found neither appropriate information, nor the way to get it.Here are my questions:1. Do these docking stations support DVI when T400 with integrated (not discrete) graphics is connected? 2. Where can I find a complete list of UltraBay devices supported by each one of these docking stations? Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a T400 with integrated graphics and recently purchased the Advanced Mini Dock 250410U. The Advanced Dock and Advanced Mini Dock support DVI pass-through. I looked into this before purchasing as well. This page will confirm the feature: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-72148. Also see reference guide for docking stations: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4TPJF4 which says ThinkPad Dock II is discontinued. This brochure says the Advanced Mini Dock does not support Ultrabay, but the Advanced Dock does. http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/options_iso/tp_docking_solutions_june09.pdf .

I have a simple question, Can I run 2 external monitors using the Ultrabase series 3 with the X230 docked and the lid open? My goal is to be able to see basically 3 displays. The main one would be the laptop and the other two extended monitors connected to the dock stations. One connected with VGA cable and the other with display port cable. Any help is appreciated.  Sebastiano

Answer:ThinkPad Pro Dock, ThinkPad Ultra Dock, or ThinkPad OneLink Pro Dock - External Monitors

The X230 can support this configuration from memory.

Hi, Everyone. Got me a nice little x270 to replace my old x201.  Happy enough with the machine, but getting it connected to my accessories (monitor, keyb, mouse, ethernet) is a bit of a chore. This machine appears to have a "proper" dock port on the bottom.  Is there a compatible ultradock available for the model 20HN x270?  By proper - I mean, Not USB.  A nice dock I can simply drop the machine into when I'm at the home office.. Thanks!

Is there a Graphics Adapter that will drive a second monitor that can be used in the ThinkPad Advanced Dock with a ThinkPad T61? Background:  I have a ThinkPad T61 (6465-CTO) running Window XP and a ThinkPad Advanced Dock.  I purchased a Lenovo 256MB ATI X1300LE Dual ? VGA or Dual ? DVI ? out PCI ? e Graphics Adapter so I could run two 24" (1920 x 1200) monitors.  I should have check notes on the X1300LE more carfully, for this configuration is not supported by Lenovo.  The failure mode is interesting.  The T61 can access a wireless router alone or in the ThinkPad Advanced Dock without the ATI X1300LE.  But if I install the ATI X1300LE in ThinkPad Advanced Dock I can no longer access the wireless router.  If I plug in the network cable then I can access the network.  In this configuration the Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN has a yellow circle with an ! on in the Device Manager.  The device status is ?This device cannot start. (Code 10)."  Note I have not tried the system with a second monitor yet.  Another option would be to keep the ATI X1300LE, and add a USP Wireless device.  Have anyone tried a similar configuration?  Sincerely yours, Marc

I just recieved my docking station yesterday. I am able to un-dock from the station but when I put the computer back on the station, the dock does not work and the usb ports stop working. Once I restart the computer everything works fine again.  Do I have to hit any buttons in order to get the dock to work after I have placed it in the doc.  Sorry if this is a dumb question, I bought a refurbished model that did not come with any manuals and the downloadable manual from lenovo is very rudimentary and doesn't address anything beyond safety issues.

Answer:T400 Advanced Mini dock station relating to re-docking

you may need to disable all the legacy devices (parallel and serial ports) in your bios to get the dock to work properly. As a word of caution, with these old dock hot docking support is not the best. So it is suggested that you shutoff the computer before you dock/undock to get the maximum compatibility.

Hello, I have a problem with a T61 + advanced dock. The issue I am talking about is only with theI got an advanced dock in order to use dual screen with the T61. I have two LCD monitors using VGA.One works fine while connected to the external VGA, but the other one does not work while I am connected to the DVI-D plug. Both monitors work fine (I crossed tested them). I have to specify that I am using a VGA/DVI-D adaptor to plug my monitor to the external DVI-D of the dock. I found this here => http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-61232.html The ThinkPad Advanced Dock (2503-10U) supports the 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Dual-VGA or Dual-DVI, TV-out PCI-Express Graphics Adapter with the following ThinkPad system configurations:T60, T60p (type 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 2007, 2008, 2613, 2623) with Windows XP only T60, T60p Widescreen (type 6369, 6370, 6371, 6372, 6373, 6374, 8741, 8742, 8743, 8744, 8745) with Windows XP only Z61e, Z61p, Z61m (type 0672, 0673, 0674, 9450, 9451, 9452, 9453) with Windows XP only Z61t (type 9440, 9441, 9442, 9443, 9448) with Windows XP only Does this mean that the use of external DVI-D on the docking station does not work with T61 ? Thank you.

yes the mini dock is good for T60 and R60 series, but unfortunately your x3100 will not support DVI output on your mini dock... due to bios restriction.

Hi meng, Welcome to the Lenovo forum. You are correct, the X3100 GPU can display (only) two screens at a time. If you need more screens, you could use a USB-DVI converter like this one. Another member reports good results with it in this thread. Cheers,Frank

I have just set up a new T500 with the Advanced Mini Dock. I am using a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. They are connected through one of the USB ports on the dock. The problem I am experiencing is the USB ports aren't working on the dock during start-up so I can not use my mouse and keyboard to unlock the computer. The Mini Dock "instructions" were less than helpful for trouble shooting. Am I doing something wrong, missing something or do I have a bad dock? If I plug my Logitech receiver directly into the computer I can unlock and start-up, then the ports work on the dock but that kind of defeats the purpose of having the dock.

More often than not it doesn't seem to work. The display setting won't switch, and I can't get to the display manager or if I can it shows only the default setting as the choice. Most of the time the display on my T61 is blank too.I have it set up so that it's supposed to switch to the external DVI monitor at 1280x1024. I can find no Lenovo documentation anywhere that explains how to use the two buttons, numbered1 and 2, in the upper left-hand corner of this docking station. Button 2 is the large, square, eject button. If I understand correctly, if I want to eject my Thinkpad (T500)from the dock, I first choose an eject command somewhere in software, then press this buttonto mechanically eject the computer from the dock. Correct? Button 1, just above Button 2, is a thin, rectangular, metal switch of the kind you'd use to engage anddisengage functions on an audio receiver. I have no idea how to use it or what it's for. Can someone explain?

Answer:Buttons 1 and 2 on ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock

The button that is listed as "1" is to send the command to undock the laptop from the dock. The button listed as "2" is the physical eject button.  These buttons work with the Lenovo Easy Eject software that is installed on the laptop.  To use the buttons, you simply press the button "1" and the light will flash for a moment then it will switch to button "2".  Once button "2" is lit, then you press it to eject. Hope this helps you.

What is hot vs. warm docking; and can ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 (433710U) do it? I can't find any manuals with the product or online. Thank you,

Answer:Hot/Warm docking - ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 (433710U)

Hello mate, Hot docking is when the ThinkPad is connected to the docking station when running. Warm docking is when the ThinkPad is connected to the station when on sleep. Yep you can do that with every docking station.

Hi again,as some of you know, I am using a SL500. I have got the Enhanced USB Port Replicator (43R8788). This thing is unusable. Of cause it lacks different interfaces. But the worst thing is that it supports only monitors up to a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels (It's enough to drive you up the wall). Now my question: Is there another dock for the SL500? What about the ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock - Europe (39T4587)? Does it fit to my notebook? If you have hints for me I would be pleasant to replay to this posting. Thanks.

I have been frustrated with my rather expensive Advanced Dock and my Thinkpad R61.  When the computer is docked it will not restart from hibernate or power off without undocking first.  Pushing the start button does nothing at all. A second problem is that if power is interrupted to the dock while the machine is docked, the computer shows a blue screen. Is this simply a matter of a bios update and updating all drivers?  This has been suggested by Lenovo technical support, however none of the lists of updates show any fixes which pertain to this problem.  The machinecame loaded with Vista SP1. Lots of posts here on the advanced mini dock, but none on the advanced dock. Thanks for your help

I have a T61 that I just upgraded with a 256 Gb SSD and on which installed Linux. Now I am thinking of buying the above dock and an ATI Radeon X1300 PCI-e video card to drive two external monitors, either VGA or DVI, using the DMS59 connector on the card. My question - since the supply of this old video card is limited on the 'net - is whether I need to buy a card with a full-height mounting bracket or a half-height mounting bracket? The cards available are typically used taken from previous installations and do not come with all the options of the original package. Thanks.

Answer:ThinkPad Advanced Dock 250310U and ATI X1300 Video Card

There are many newer cards that members have sucessfully fitted into these docks. Some require modifications such as cutting or grinding the heatsinks and some fit out-of-box. I don't have any specific brands/models to recommend, but if you do a search both here and at the thinkpads.com forum you'll find a lot of useful info. I've seen some of the brand new low-profile cards selling in the $30-40 price range Some of the more powerful ones do require modification and it's important to consider that in most cases the manfuacturers warranty is voided if you modify the card, even if it's only to remove a small amount of metal from the heatsink in order for it to fit. In most cases you'll want a card with a passive cooling system (no fan), but some members have mounted the cards outside the dock using a bus expansion cable to enable use of a more powerful graphic card however in my opinion if you need that much power you should just build a gaming rig.

I am running a IBM Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station 170 (Model 40A20170US). I have 3 Asus 23.6" LED HD Monitors (Model VN247HP). These monitors have a standard VGA connection and 2 HDMI ports, By default you are provided a VGA cable and a HDMI-DVI cable. When I plug these monitors into the Ultra Dock no signal is found(including the VGA).When I plug into the direct VGA port on the laptop, the monitor gets signal. If I use a Mini-DP connection with a Mini-DP-DVI adapter I get signal just fine. If I plug my this monitor into my desktop under HDMI and DVI connections it works just fine.I have gone into the bios and confirmed that under display the "Video Mode on Dock" is set to Advanced(I tried standard and it did not work any better).  I have the latest video drivers for the Intel HD graphics driver (10.18.10.3412) and the NVIDIA Quadro K1100M (9.18.13.4052). I am really sorry you are experiencing such issues. What makes me really mad is the fact, according to your words, that Lenovo support is directing you to this forum for help? This forum works on volunteer basis, so you might have a luck or not. I mean, you are living in the USA which is the most important market for Lenovo so if I would you, I would escallate the support issue.Meanwhile, there are two options you might try out:You could check if the firmware utility driver update helps, http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd028011or you might try out your luck with the native nVidia drivers, see http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/Quadro_Certified/334.95/334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit... . The latest helped me to run internal and 2 external monitors with 135W dock http://www.lenovoquickpick.com/deu/accessory/40A20135EU/thinkpad-ultra-dock-135w-eu.

Ok, so here's my problem: I have a lenovo T60 with the following specs: T5600 cpu (1.8Ghz), 3GB RAM, 360GB HDD, ATI Radeon Mobility X1300 (64MB) video Today I recieved an advanced dock that came with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT (256MB) PCIe video card.I am running Windows 7 (64 bit), and with the default BIOS settings (internal video priority), Windows detects the 2400XT card, but I can't get any signal to it. When I switch the BIOS to PCIe graphics, I get signal to the 2400XT, but the X1300 doesn't appear anymore in the Device Manager, and the lenovo's LCD is dead. My question(s) is: Can I run BOTH video cards simultaneously, or if I buy a normal PCIe ATI Radeon X1300 (256MB) to replace the 2400XT, would that make a difference (as in can I run them both)? All I want is to use the laptop's LCD for normal day-to-day stuff, and move to the secondary screen for gaming (i host 5 Minecraft servers, and because of the slow integrated X1300 I can't run the game and am limited to just UNIX console administration). Also it is a MUST that I run 2 screens at once, and although, I could attach 2 screens to the 2400XT, deskspace is limited and I would preffer using the built-in LCD of the laptop, that, and because of the slightly annoying video issue described below. On a sidenote:I experienced an abnormality when running on the 2400XT as in that in the middle of the screen I had a rectangle that allways lagged behind the rest of the graphics displayed, sometimes just... Answer:Thinkpad T60 and advanced dock with PCIe Video - Running both cards simultaneously

Hi. There's a very long thread in this section of the forum dealing with T6x systems and advanced dock & associated pci-e graphics. I face a similar situation to your's and this is what I do: in BIOS I leave "Internal video" as primary device > boot Win7, let it load all its start-up apps > hot-dock the laptop. At this point, Win7 detects all relevant hardware (external pci-e video card, extra USB ports, my LAN connection works via the dock's RJ45 socket, audio is output to the dock's stero jack etc.). Following that, I can use Windows' Control panel to chose which graphic card / screen I want to use as primary. The nice thing is that Win7 deals nicely with hot un-docking as well, while WinXP sometimes complains about the graphic cards ... Try it and let us know if it worked. regards,

Hey all.  I just bought a Thinkpad Advanced Dock for my T61 and it's pretty much replaced my old desktop system.  The only problem I'm having with it is that the card reader in the dock won't read SDHC cards.  It'll read SD cards fine, but doesn't do anything for SDHC cards.  My T61 will read SDHC cards, which I use as a readyboost drive, but I'd rather use the card reader built into the dock for it.  I've looked for updated drivers, but apparantly the dock doesn't have drivers, according to the Lenovo site's Drivers section.  Any help?   Now all I have to do is wait to get a video card to replace the crappy Intel x3100 in my T61...  Any recommendations on a better one than the one Lenovo recommends? I've heard good things about the PowerColor AX6570 and ATI Radeon HD 4670.  There are Youtube videos of it in an Advanced Dock, playing Crysis 2 at roughly 30fps.  Personally I'd lean more towards the Powercolor, but that's just me.  Thanks in advance. System Specs:Lenovo T61 6465-01U6GB RamWindows 7 Home Premium x64Thinkpad Advanced Dock Note: I hope this is the right section to post this.  I figured since it was T61 related, it might belong here.  Sorry if it doesn't.

Answer:Thinkpad Advanced Dock won't read SDHC cards? & Video Card Recommendation?

Hello,

If you have heard that the PowerColor AX6570 or the ATI Radeon HD 4670 works in the ThinkPad Advanced Dock, then I would recommend going with that, as finding a low-profile single-slot video card that fits into the dock and works in it may be difficult.

Given the era in which the ThinkPad Advanced Dock was designed, it may only support SD cards via the card reader.  I would  suggest attaching an SDHC card reader via one of the USB ports, or perhaps via the CardBus or ExpressCard ports, if those aren't being used.

Answer:ThinkPad Advanced Dock multiple monitors compatibility with NVIDIA Quadro FX 370 --using T61p

Just to let everyone know that the NVIDIA Quadro FX370 will not work with the Advanced Dock, the only video card that works is Radeon? X1300 PRO PCI Express card. I bought the FX370 card thinking that both cards (Notebook card and external card) would play nice with Vista, the Advanced Dock and my T61p laptop (nvidia FX570M card), big mistake!Do yourself a favor and read this post http://www.carltonbale.com/2007/09/review-of-my-new-thinkpad-t61 if you plan to use two external monitors just use the presentation settings Fn+F7 and create a new profile.I'll return the card... thanks for nothing Lenovo! - Eduardo Lopez

Hello fellow users / Lenovo, In our office we have several X1 Carbons and several ThinkPad USB 3.0 Docks (0A33970) located all over the office. We typically bring our X1 Carbons around and use each other's Dock during the course of work. However, we recently face a problem with the Ethernet interface not working with other Docks, other than the Dock that the driver was installed with. Using other Docks, the Ethernet interface comes up as a generic Ethernet device with a yellow warning triangle inside Control Panel. Using the Dock that the driver was installed with, the Ethernet device works as normal. It should be pretty easy to replicate this behaviour, just get an X1 Carbon (fresh, Windows 8.1) and connect a USB 3.0 Dock to it, and install appropriate drivers.Verify that the Ethernet port works correctly. Next, disconnect the Dock and connect another Dock to the X1 Carbon. Observe that the Ethernet interface does not work, and see the yellow warning triangle icon under Control Panel. Uninstalling and Reinstalling the drivers with the new Dock doesn't work either. Only the Dock that the driver was originally installed with will work.

Hello My T61 hangs after a power outage when attached to ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock P/N 250410U. The keyboard and mouse stop responding and after several minutes the machine displays a blue screen saying that the system was halted. I even tried removing it from the docking station and there was no response from the T61's own KBD or Trackpoint. Any ideas? Please advise. Thank you Ivan

I have a Thinkpad W540 with a Lenovo Ultra Dock Docking Station (40A20170US). Here is the set up I am trying to get to work:Display 1) VGA Planar PL2010M monitorDisplay 2) DVI Planar PL1910M monitorDisplay 3) DisplayPort Lenovo L2251x Wide monitorDisplay 4) LCD monitor (off) When I have selected Standard Mode under the BIOS display settings, I am able to connect two monitors plus the internal LCD at the same time: one on VGA and the other on DVI, or I can connect one on VGA and the other on DisplayPort.  This allows me to have three displays, including the LCD.  My problem is that I am unable to get a third monitor to work as well.  When I connect a monitor via DisplayPort, the monitor on DVI stops working.  After reading forum posts and whatever else I found online, I learned (maybe I'm incorrect?) that I need to switch to Advanced Mode in the BIOS to be able to use three external monitors.   I then uninstalled drivers (the BIOS instructions state that you are supposed to uninstall graphics drivers before switching to Advanced Mode), switched to Advanced Mode in the BIOS, started up the computer, reinstalled the latest drivers, but now the only screen working is my laptop's LCD screen.  None of monitors are detected by Windows no matter what I try. When I switch back to Standard Mode in the BIOS, two of my external monitors begin working again. My docking station firmware is updated FYI.   Any suggestions ... Read more

Answer:Unable to connect to 3 monitors to Ultra Dock (Thinkpad W540) in Advanced Mode BIOS Setting

So I fixed the issue for myself and just wanted to post in case somebody else had the same issue.  I took the following steps to fix the issue:[Background: BIOS is in "Standard" display mode to begin with; I had already updated the docking station's firmware first with a program called fwdphb03.exe and then with Lenovo's update utility.]1) In Windows, I uninstall drivers for the Intel Graphics and K1100 dedicated card.2) Restart, go into BIOS, switch to "Advanced" mode under the Display tab.  I also have the option selected to start up on the docks in the BIOS Display tab.3) Booted into Windows (8.1) and it looked like the Intel Graphics drivers were automatically downloaded. I then ran Lenovo's System Update utility to get the latest video drivers.  Under the optional tab in the Lenovo update utility, I selected the "Optimus" drivers and hit download/install.  It installed, and I had to restart.4) Booted into Windows again, ran Lenovo update utility again, and again it had a video driver to install when I checked for updates.  I installed that, had to restart again.5) Booted into windows, checked screen resolution and saw that no external monitors were showing.6) I then decided to get a driver straight from the source.  Downloaded: the following file from  Nvidia: 334.95-quadro-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe.  I ran the installation, it did a "Clean" installation with everything checked off. I have a ThinkPad W520-4282. I want to use a ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (170W) [pn 433830U] at work and a Lenovo USB 2.0 Port Replicator with Digital Video [0A33942] at home.I did not have to install any drivers for the Mini Dock and it worked just fine driving an external monitor. After installing the driver for the Port Replicator, I could no longer drive the external monitor when attached to the mini dock or the VGA+ video port on the ThinkPad.I played with a lot of things to fix the situation and nothing worked. I even uninstalled the driver for the Port Replicator and still could not drive an external monitor. In fact the laptop did not even recognize that an external monitor was attached.Later I found using the Device Manager that the NVIDIA Qadro 1000M display adapter was disabled, proabably during installation of the Port Replicator driver. Once I enabled that, I could drive an external monitor again. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Will I be able to use the Port Replicator if I install the driver again?

Dear all, would like to inquire if X220 will operate with two external monitor? I'm ok to close the lid of my X220.The 4337 docks support VGA and DVI, will both work together? What's working:- I have been using x220 screen with another external monitor through VGA connection.- Connecting Dell 2340L direct to VGA works with X220 screen, not with 2 external monitor. What's not working:- Recently got a Dell 2340L which contains only VGA and HDMI, which I thought HDMI would work with an adaptor (HDMI to DVI) port - no response although the Windows 7 detects external monitor display.

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

I currently have my ThinkPad T440s connected to two external monitors via the ThinkPad ProDock 40A10090US (One VGA and the other DVI-D). I currently have the two monitors and the laptop displaying separate desktops. However looking at the laptop screen is a pain when switching back and forth between the two large monitors and the laptop. I was curious if my current setup with the T440s and the Pro Dock (40A10090US) could support three monitors (One cloning the laptop screen)?

Answer:ThinkPad T440s + ThinkPad Pro Dock 40A10090US = Triple Monitor?

I don't know if you can use both the on-laptop DisplayPort and the dock DVI-D at the same time, but if you can, you should be able to get the three monitors of output you want. Not sure if you can force it to clone the laptop display, but you might as well skip the internal display entirely.

I hooked the one Acer monitor directly to the monitor port, and it works perfectly.  I then hooked the other through a Triton SS2 Extreme UV200 External DVI/VGA Video Card as was recommended for me to do so.  The Triton has a USB plug which I then connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the docking station, and loaded the software.  Everything worked great but the 2nd monitor screen enlarges everything.  So I though I could just go into the control panel and adjust that monitors settings.  However, the system is only recognizing the monitor in the monitor port of the docking station.  In the connection directions, it says the 2nd monitor has to be connected to the other USB port that is not standard and is on the far left of the back of the dock with an emblem the has 2 "+" signs stacked on each other followed by a bold "D" (I think).  I have tried to see if there is an adapter to convert the standard USB to fit this other port, and no one has been able to help me.  Does anyone have any recommendations, idea's or knowledge of how to work through this?  Thanks.

that is the Displayport, which can be converted to a DVI or VGA port using an appropriate adapter. But there is no USB adapter for the Displayport, as they use a different technology.

Hello,The laptop in question will not charge with the above mentioned dock when it previously did. If you shut down the mahcine and turn it back on when docked it works, but after this point if undocked and docked again it seems to lose it's ability to charge via the dock giving the "plugged in but not charging" message on the power system icon from the taskbar. As it stands the laptop can be charged by the AC port on the back and as mentioned when given a power cycle on the dock. The above issue happens on several docks with different power supplies. The laptop is no longer in warranty and it is possible to get this sent back and repaired (paying for the service) if that is an option. This is greatly inconvenient for the user affected and is causing disruption daily.

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

Hi all,I know I'm dredging up old technology here, but figure if anybody is going to have advice it will be the folks on this board.  I currenlty use a T400 with the Advance Mini-Dock.  I run both a VGA and a DVI monitor off of it, SPDIF, and have every USB port full (including to an external hub).  I really miss not having either eSATA or USB 3.0 for higher-speed connection to external drives.  My work is phasing out T61s in another office and have a few Advance Docks.  I have used them with my older T61p, but started thinking about my T400 at home, but before I have one shipped to me I thought I would ask.  Has anybody tried to put either a USB 3.0 or an eSATA PCIe card in one of the Advance Docks and use it with a T400 on Windows 7 x64?  Any advice if I try it out? Thanks,Lawrence

You need discreet graphics enabled in the bios. You may find some other posts with better descriptions but basically, there are options to use the motherboard graphics on boot, switchable, or discreet. You want discreet. That helped me make it work.

Hey everyone, I recently purchased a Lenovo T400 and an Advanced Mini-Dock for docking. When I first got everything in, I was having problems getting my external monitor and external keyboard/mouse to work when the machine was docked. After messing with it for a long long time, putting it into sleep, docking/undocking, locking/unlocking, pressing buttons, I finally noticed a little red light on the mini-dock turn on, a red circle with a line through it (right above the green play button). When this light turned on, everything began to work. I wasn't sure what I did to make it go into that mode, so I left it docked like that for a few weeks. Last night I undocked my computer and now when I tried to dock it again, I cannot get any external devices to work again and I cannot get the red circle w/line to turn on, the green play button is on.  What is the red circle with the line through it mean? How do I get it into that mode again? Also, if you have a T400 and Advanced Mini-Dock, can you explain the exact steps you take to dock and undock correctly?I follow the directions that came with the dock, but its not working. Thanks guys

I have my T400 (XP SP3) in an Advanced Mini-dock connected via coax to a Cambridge Audio DACMagic which has a light on the front marked "incoming sample rate". I tried some side-by-side comparisons of 16/44 and 24/96 samples from my harddrive using both iTunes and Windows Media Player but the light stayed on 48kHz for both. Is the digital-out or the dock limited to 48kHz? Or do we think some software in the reproduction chain is messing with the sampling rate? Any ideas? Duncan

there is no information on the sample rate of the coax out on the dock, but you can select up to 24/192 khz in sound property for speakers/digital output property under control panel-> sound.

You are either getting a static short from the metal prongs on the docking station, (lenovo has a fix for this, its just rubber caps for the prongs)  However, I think the T60 is supposed to be off, or hibernated before docking.....ie, don't dock with computer on.

Hi All, I just have basic question. I am currently using a t400 with the advanced mini dock station. I would like to connect two external monitors and keep my internal display on my laptop.  Obviously, i can connect one monitor through the VGA port on the docking station, but how will the second external monitor connect? Should i get a VGA to DVI  converter and plug directly into the DVI port on the docking station? What is the most simple way I can accomplish this?  I would like to avoid any formatting/window errors if possible. Please advise Is there any way i can use the VGA port from my Laptop to connect?

Answer:Multiple Monitors on Advanced Mini Dock / T400

Hi Jsteez, Welcome to the Lenovo forum  Your T400 can drive a maximum of 2 monitors (including the built-in screen) simultaneously. This thread and others have more information. A DVI-to-VGA adapter will NOT work; the DVI port on the dock is DVI-D, i.e. it has the digital signal only. So to use it you will need a monitor with a DVI or other digital input like HDMI or DisplayPort. Your best option may be a USB video adapter. Best regards,Frank

I have a T400 2764-CTO with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 descrete graphics card, running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, an advanced dock and Dell 2007WFP monitor plugged into the dock via DVI (full spec available if needed/relevant). Until I installed the Lenovo ATI driver I was able to work with my laptop in the dock, lid closed, at 1680x1050 with Aero turned on.  Now that I have installed the official Lenovo ATI driver (in an effort to solve another problem) when I plug my T400 into the dock with the lid closed or boot from the dock following happens: Aero gets disabledSound gets mutedThe power settings for 'maximum performance' profile in power manager 3 get changed to ultra low performance The sound and power settings are able to be adjusted manually and return to normal but Aero (although on in the menu) is not enabled.  Further the graphics on screen are poor and slow. The same problem exists if I plug in the VGA cable into the dock instead of the DVI. If I use the laptop with the lid open at 1440x900 with the same output on laptop screen and monitor Areo works on the external monitor (although not in native resolution, as such not ideal) and the other issues do not present (ie sound muted and power settings). There seem to be a number of T400/ATI/dock related issues and no complete fix.  Is anyone able to help?

I have a T400 lenovo that I'm hoping to upgrade to and re-use the dock from my T60P laptop (2503-10U).  This is the large advanced dock and I do have a hard drive caddy and extra hard drive installed as well as the pci-e videocard. The T60P still works fine in the dock so I know the dock is good.  I'm composing this email on it now. When I try to dock the T400 into the advanced dock it fits fine and gives me the option to eject like the T60P after its seeded.  When I power it up the fan of the dock spins up, the light changes to do not eject on the dock itself, then it sits there for 2-3 seconds and reboots.  I never get any video on either of my dvi connected displays off the pci-e videocard.  This reboot loop continues until I hold down the power button and then eject the laptop. The T400 in question is Type 6475-ZN2.  I have checked the bios options and changed what I think was related. The bios is at ver 2.16 right now.  I set the display to PCI Express and the Boot Display Device to Digital(DVI).  Any ideas how to make this thing work?  I've read others have done this combination... Thanks.. Joe

Answer:T400 not working with older 2503-10u advanced dock

I have a T400, model 2764-CTO that I dock in the 2503-10U advanced dock.  I use the VGA and DVI connectors on the docking station to drive two monitors (a Dell FP1901 (1280x1024) and an Apple 20" Cinema display with ADC-DVI adapter (1600x1050)).   I tried an ATI X300SE video card (vga db15 connector) in the PCI-e slot to try to get a 3rd monitor working.  The dock's PCI bay fan spins up automatically, but no video is output to the card.  I also adjusted the Bios as you stated in your original post but still got no result. I read in an ebay listing that only the Lenovo 41U5028 (ATI Radeon X1300 LE) and Lenovo 41U4813 (Radeon X300SE) video cards are compatible with this docking station.  So.... I purchased a Lenovo X1300LE video card (with the ~50 pin connector that takes a dual DVI dongle) on ebay and just received it this afternoon.  Will be attempting to install and configure tonight after I get the kids to bed. Will let you know how it goes, but I'd appreciate your keeping me apprised of your efforts, too.  And anyone else had success?  My goal is a quad display - one off each of the dock's built in ports, plus one each off the PCI-e's dongle.  But I am anticipating issues with driver conflicts.

Hi, i have here a T400, an Advanced Dock and a Qimonda Ati 2600XT.I installed the Graphic Card in the Dock and tested all with an old Thinkpad R60. All woks fine.  When I installed my Thinkpad T400 there are a lot of problems. Sometimes the TP will not boot.  The fan run, the LED's are on. but the screen is black. After that there starts the loop again. When i release the TP from Dock, the TP will boot normally.  When the TP boot at the Dock, the fan make noise, but  no graphic card will be detected. Sometimes, whem i put the TP in the Dock while its running, the graphic card will detected but a reboot is neccessary and after that, there is no graphic card presen in device manager. Also there is no image on the external screen and only the TP-Display work. I changed the BIOS Setting in Display to PCI-Express graphics, like I did on my R60. Need help

Hi, I support both T60 and T61 laptops running Windows XP which use the Advanced Mini Dock.  I've found that any power loss to the docking station will result in the freeze up of Windows XP or a hardware bsod.  I've located a IBM article which states that this docking station cannot recover from a power loss.  They mention a work around which includes disabling legacy components within BIOS (serial and parallel ports disabled).  This somewhat works, as you can use the laptops touchpad and keyboard to save any files and restart.  Any peripherals plugged into the replicator need to be plugged directly into the laptop to get them to work.  The display reverts to single display on laptop and performs a software undock.  My question is whether there is another option?  The Replicator II and T42 laptop was more or less seamless transition when there was a loss of power.  Although it had only 1 usb port.  Is there another docking station that could be used with the T60/61 laptops, which would not have this problem?  Or another solution, I'm unaware of? Thanks

2503 can take another graphics card, if you mod the PSU, you can put in a ATI 5770/6770 graphics card.

My T400 hangs if power fails while it is sitting in docking station (adv. mini dock). I have seen such problems with T60 on this forum, but not with T400. Does anyone experience similar problem?

Answer:T400 + Advanced mini-dock: hang on power failure

I have seen similar cases with several Thinkpads using the Adv mini dock. When using this docking the computer need to be ejected/undocked before removal so when the power fail i guess that would be the same as removing the computer without a eject/undock. There is obviously some hardware in the docking that need to be removed in a proper way. There isn't much to do about this and if the computer is not undocked the proper way unexpected results might occur. I would recommend to undock properly before you remove the power cable. If you live in a area where the power might be very unstable i guess this docking might be a bad choice. -gan

I'm running a T400 with Windows XP in an advanced dock with a Raedon HD 2400 XT, however in Windows there is no sign of the device at all, it's like it not plugged in. I have ruled out the dock and the card being the issue, as if my colleage has a T61 and it works fine on my dock with this card. I tried my laptop on another dock which has a X1300 card in it, and my laptop doesnt detect that either. All other dock ports work fine. I'm guessing this may be a driver issue, but in device manager (Even with Hidden devices shown and disconnected devices shown also) I can't seem to find anything in there that could be the graphics card. There are no unknown devices or devices that report they are not working correctly. Likewise, if I scan for hardware changes or try to 'Add Hardware' in control panel, it doesnt pick anything up. Trying to install the Lenovo drivers for either card doesnt work. The drivers install fine but still no card is detected. I really need to get a card working so that I can have two external monitors running to do my job. I would really appreaciate any insight anyone has on this.

Hi, Reading through these forums I see a lot of 'issues' with DVI out on the Advanced Mini Dock + the Lenovo T400. This is a huge deal for me, I just placed an order for one of these laptops, with the Intel 4500MHD graphics *only*. I do not play games, so it does not make sense to purchase the switchable graphics option. That said, all the posts I've read about DVI/Advanced Mini Dock/T400 have said to use discreet graphics. Well, my laptop will not have this option. Does anybody have a T400, ONLY intel 4500MHD graphics, and DVI works on the advanced mini dock? If it's not going to work, I need to cancel my order now. Thanks,David

Everything works fine. I'm using Windows XP and a DVI connection from the dock to the monitor. The problem I see is when I need to wake the machine by pushing the power button on the dock (touching a keyboard key isn't enough). The monitor comes back fine for a few seconds, then switches to 640x480 which shows me an unusable section of the screen in extremely poor resolution. I've got to reboot to get rid of it.  I've seen at least similar posts around forums but no real solutions. Anyone work through something like this ? The T400 is just a few months old. Strangely enough, when I was first getting the external monitor working, I fond it hard to get the resolution set so that the resolution setting would work. It always seemed to want to revert back to 640x480 on the external monitor. Not sure why. It eventually stayed on the resolution I set but obviously not very well.Ben

Answer:T400 on advanced mini dock wakes up then switches to 640x480

I should add that in my display settings, What I THOUGHT I needed to do was set the #1 monitor resolution to 1440x900 which is the laptop screen resolution and set the #2 monitor resolution to 1680x1050 which is the 22" external monitor resolution but windows just resets the #2 one to 640x480 so perhaps this is my own configuration problem but now I'm confused as to how the setup should look.

I recently purchased an advanced mini dock  250410U. It did not come with a power supply. I checked with the manual and it is supposed to have a 90W power supply for the dock. I am currently using it with the 65W power supply that came with my T400 laptop and everything seems to be working ok. Should I be concerned? Am I loosing functionality some how?

Answer:T400 advanced mini dock 250410U POWER ADAPTER!

The 65W adapter may not supply enough wattage to the ATI T400 models running a demanding application. If you have the battery installed, you shouldn't lose any performance, although you might notice a very slight battery drain.

Hi -We have a couple of advanced dock 2503's with T60Ps running Win XP that have been working great with a Matrox M9140 LP quad card and 6 screens for years. We have also successfully used x32's with the Dock II and Matrox G450's quads. Our T60p's are faltering with age and one of our software programs now requires Win 7 to run. Since we are on a really tight budget and have spare advanced docks and graphics cards we are trying to upgrade to refurbished off lease T400's which are the supposed to be the last 14" T series supported on the advanced dock 2503 along with the 15i"T500. So now, we are trying to dock our T400 with Windows 7 with the same configuration and the laptop will not boot on the dock. The T400 starts to boot, does not even get to the Thinkpad splash screen with nothing ever appearing on any of the screens, shuts down, then starts to boot again and repeats this over and over. The computer will boot fine on the dock without the Matrox card installed. We have not installed Matrox drivers yet, as the correct procedure to get a graphics card to work in any Thinkpad Dock, including the advanced dock to work has always been to first change the BIOS Display Primary Video Device to PCI Express then put the laptop on the dock, then boot, then install the drivers. (After that you can change the bios setting back and run 6 screens - lcd, vga out of dock , and 4 off the matrox card). I don't think drivers would install anyway without the machine having already recognized th... Read more

Answer:T400, Advanced Dock 2503, Windows 7 64bit, Matrox ...

Two things I would try. First, try booting the T400 in the dock but without the Matrox card. If that works, then try booting in Safe Mode with the Matrox card. My suspicion is with BIOS set to PCI express, Wndows trys to use the Matrox, fails and restarts. Usually Windows will load a generic driver but thatt may not be working for some reason. Try booting with the Intel graphics enabled then Add Hardware, install the Matrox drivers and then change the BIOS back to PCIExpress.

I have a T400 with integrated graphics and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, and I recently bought an Advanced Mini Dock for it.  I have a Dell 1800FP monitor connected to the dock via the DVI output.  When I dock the T400, the system does not detect the external monitor.  If I go to Screen Resolution and click Detect, it does not show up.  The weird part is that if I reboot while in the dock, when the system comes back up it *does* detect and use the external monitor. Any ideas what is going on?  The other devices attached through the dock (USB devices, Ethernet cable) all work fine.

This is very bizarre.  Some of the USB ports on my ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 stop working and then they start working again later.  I can't determine any pattern.  This is very annoying.  For example, all of a sudden Windows reacts as if I just plugged in my external harddrive (ie. makes a sound and the dialoge box will open).  Today, my printer stopped working and I ran diagnostics until I decided to plug it directly into my laptop instead of the docking station at which point it starting working.  I would reinstall the driver to the docking station but there is no driver for the docking station.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Hello, just got a new T400 at work. I know this issue was common with the R60...however I figured this would be resolved with the T400.  After PROPERLY undocking my T400 (Start -> undock -> wait for notification and green light).....  I go off to my meetings, etc and all is well with the world. When re-dock the machine, the USB keyboard and Mouse (and sometimes the monitor) will not re-engage.  Sometimes I get the monitor...and no keyboard and mouse. Any ideas on this? Kind of frustrating because I usually have to re-boot (or unplug the mouse/keyboard/ monitor from the dock and plug them directly into the laptop...which defeats the purpose of the dock). Appreciate the help!Robert

Good afternoon.  First post... please be kind.  :-) I have a T400 that I am docking on an Advanced Mini Dock (250410U).  Up until about 4 weeks ago, the Ethernet connection on the dock worked wonderfully.  Then one day, it just stopped... now, no Ethernet, only WiFi (through the laptop itself).  I have tested the jack/port on the wall.. it works fine... the Ethernet cable works fine... and the same jack/port and the same Ethernet cable, when plugged directly into my T400, work fine. I have no idea why my dock is no longer allowing wired network connections.  Anybody having this issue or aware of any fixes?  Two events coincide with this occurring but I don't believe have any impact... one was I upgraded to Windows 7, from Windows XP... but I had wired connection on 7 for at least two weeks before this occurred... and the other was I moved desks at work, but this issue popped up prior to the move. ANY help would be much appreciated!!

Answer:T400 - No Ethernet (wired network) when docked on Advanced Mini Dock (250410U)

Have you opened the machine recently? There is a cable that runs from near the fan connector (by the ethernet port) past the memory and turns toward the middle of the machine. It goes to a flat connector on the motherboard under the wireless card. If that cable is disconnected, it will yield your symptoms.

There's also new "ultra dock".They're designed for thinkpad t440s.But I wonder if they also work with thinkpad t431s?that would be logical because the old series 3 docks have former AC connector, whereas t431s has the new rectangular one... T431s Manual says that series 3 docks work with it though.
