Preferred Solution: Toshiba external hard disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Toshiba external hard disk

Yeah Reine, my older Passport drive will do that too sometimes cause the data cable is a bit finicky. I'd just unplug the external and power it down. Wait a few, then plug it back up to USB and power it back on. If that dont work, throw in a computer reboot, before u start messing with driver uninstalls and such.

I have used a Western Digital HD on the same computer and had no probs. Just plugged and it started working. But i have no idea why this doesn't work. I have tried it on different comp and OS's, but still didn't work.

Answer:Toshiba external hard disk problem?

The best way to test the drive is to remove it from its case and connect it to the internal wiring of a desktop PC and see if it operates OK. Often the problem is simply the power supply or a failure in the circuitry in the external box.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

regards,

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

Thanks

Answer:3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.

Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.

All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

Hi,

I have the toshiba 1 tb harddrive that has not been working for a while now. It worked fine for a while but then for some reason it just got stuck. I have tried everything I could, have formatted it multiple times but it is just too slow to use. It works once in a while but most of the time I get an error everytime I try to back anything up. I also have problems opening files already on the hard drive or copying them on my computer. Basically this hard drive right now is worthless and I hope you can help me out.

Thank you

I got one of those recently and used the Toshiba tools in the hard drive to back up my system. So then I reinstalled my Windows but I can't get the files I backed up off of the External HD. They're there. It shows that they are taking up space. But I can't access them. The folder that they're in is full of .RIM files. I can only get them by using the tools to restore or sync my system. I tried both but they don't work. When I try to restore, it shows me the folder with all my files, I select it, but then there's nothing to select in the "snapshot" section. (See attachment). Then if I try to sync the stuff on the HD to my desktop, I get this screen (see second attachment) and it does nothing. It just sits like that. The files remaining and completed and time just all stay at 0. I know my files are on the HD. Is there any way to manually get them off of it? I should have never used the Toshiba tools to back it up. Shoulda just manually copied all the files onto it cuz I did that for 1 or 2 files and I can access them just fine. I'd be really thankful if someone could help me out here. Thanks!!

I have a new 2T Toshiba external hard drive. I have Windows 7 on my desktop. I have Windows XP on my laptop. I want to be able to save data from each computer to the external hard drive. I want to have 1T on the external hard drive designated for each computer. Can this be done and if so how do I do it?

Answer:toshiba external hard drive

I would just make two folders, one for the Win XP data and one for the Windows 7 data...that gives you the maximum flexibility, but you can go into Disk Management with it plugged in (USB 2 or 3?) to a computer and delete the partition on it now and make two equal new partitions ( or split as you wish) and format them to NTFS.

Are the two computers on a network? If so you can share the drive on whatever computer you wish and map it as a network drive on the other computer so it shows in Computer window and is easily accessable. Otherwise you will have to plug into each as needed. I would make the drive letter somehing deeper in the alphabet that has space between it and the next nearest letter. Then it should retain the same drive letter each time it is plugged into a system and make for easier backups in that you won't ever have to change the path to the drive.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.

I have a Toshiba DWC250 5TB external drive formatted ReFS that I cannot detect in either Disk Management or by using DiskPart/List Disk. Cabling and power are sound. The unit is not user serviceable because the case is not designed to be opened. I use it in a storage pool on Windows 10 Pro. I am having problems with the pool and removed the drive to check for files with a different computer.

I would like to use Diskpart/clean or clean all on it but first I have to get the disk detected. The unit has not shown signs of drive failure so it may be re-useable. Is there a technique to force detection (should it still be useable)? Please note the file system in not NTFS. It is ReFS. I have already detached it from its home PC and attached to a Surface Pro 4 via the Surface Dock to see if I can get it detected, but without success.

Answer:Toshiba external hard drive not detectible

You can open the case. Here is a video that will show you where the locking tabs are, but hopefully knowing where the tabs are you can finesse it open a bit easier:
Disasembly and assembly of a TOSHIBA External Hard Drive - YouTube

I would start by plugging it into a blue, USB 2.0 port, go into UEFI/BIOS setup and see if the drive is recognized as a possible boot source.

As a last resort, open the case, connect the hard drive via standard SATA and power cables.

Also...when it is connected, does device manager show any unrecognized/troubled devices?

Hey there. I have an issue with my Toshiba External Hard Drive not showing up on my new PC. Shows up just fine on my old PC, but doesn't so much as show up in drive management on my new pc. The only real difference between the two systems being the new PC is much faster, and it has 3.0 USB hubs instead of 2.0 USB hubs... I'm about 98% the files are there, the new PC just isn't picking it up. I'll note, though I don't know how much it has to do with anything, my drive when plugged into my old PC will show as a white light and blink white, where on my new PC it is a solid blue color and doesn't flash. And again, on my new PC, doesn't even register or show up as a partition. I will also note, every other USB item I've plugged into the same USB port functions (mouse, keyboard, speakers, thumb drives) and I've tried multiple other ports. It isn't the kind that requires an external power source (just like a giant thumb drive). It has 500 GB's total, and had about 700mb or so free last I had it open on my old PC. This is a link to the same make and model as mine. https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Portable-Hard-Drive/dp/B005J7YA64?th=1Any ideas on how to access my stuff on my new PC?

Answer:Toshiba External Hard Drive not showing on new PC?

Do you have any thumb drives to test on this USB port to see if its a bad port on new computer? It could be possible for 2 of 4 wires to make connection to power the drive but no data communication on the other 2 wires. If other data devices such as a thumb drive work fine then it is likely a driver issue where the controller in the external hard drive Windows doesnt have the proper driver to mount this drive.Solutions to gain access to your data at the new computer are:- Locate the driver needed for Toshiba External USB drive support for your OS and install it so it knows how to mount this drive on new PC.- Move the hard drive inside to a different external drive caddy that the newer OS supports the drivers for- Remove the HDD from the Toshiba external case and mount it direct to a SATA Data and Power connection to a desktop computer- Connect to the old computer through a network share, and have this older computer connected to the Toshiba external drive and then from newer computer access the data on the Toshiba drive through the network share with new computer connected over network to old computer. Old computer has no problems with driver support to mount this drive and so you have access to the data.- Use a newer external hard drive that new computer can use, connect this to old computer and copy entire drive from old drive to new drive and now you have it accessible on new computer.- Connect Toshiba drive to old computer and connect a say 64GB USB stick to the old compu... I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

hi my friend asked me to have a look at a there external hard drive after she split coke on it, and it stop working, the power is still getting to it the hard drive is still spining but the driver appears to be missing.

there is no vissable water marks (no sign of damage within the casing) (also there is no arking, burn marks)

there is power to the board and driver (light on the front and the driver spinning)

mine and there laptop both recognise that there is something there (as a 'unknown device') but it doesn't recognise it as a storage device.

when it did work it installed drivers from the windows drivers. i manually tryed choosing these drivers without success. it came back error code 10.

so i am unsure what the problem to be except the driver is missing,

much abilaged if anyone can help

just to in form i am running on vista

Answer:Toshiba external hard drive unknown device

I think it likely that the usb interface in your external enclosure may be damaged.
The drive may still be undamaged, and transferring it to a new enclosure may be your best best.
Such enclosures are relatively cheap and easily available.
I would not suggest continuing to use the existing enclosure.
Depending on the damage done to the usb interface, that damaged device could cause damage to the usb port of your computer.
Hope this helps.

Hi Frnds

I hav a Toshiba 1 TB external HDD. It was working fyn till today. Now it is not showing in My Computer or Disk Management. It does make the sound when I connect or disconnect it from the laptop. and the HDD light remains on.

Please advise how to fix this

Thanks

Answer:Toshiba external USB hard drive not detected in any laptop

Go under the Device Manager and uninstall all the USB Controllers then reboot your PC don't connect the 1 TB just yet. Make sure nothing is connect to those ports like a keyboard or mouse otherwise they'll lockup. Once rebooted Windows will rebuild the table for USB Controllers. Now you should be all set. Unless you have some sort of conflict with IRQ or Registry setting. There is a free app called USBDVIEW what you would do is disconnect from all non-disconnected USB devices that are stored on the PC these settings can cause all sort of issues.

My sister's hard drive was going out, so i decided to buy her a new one. I also got an external enclosure to put the old one it. I installed the new one, and got windows to starting up, then I left. Well, she is now saying the 2.5" external enclosure will not fit her hard drive.

The hard drive in the enclosure is a hitachi 60gig, not sure of the model number. The hard drive in the computer is a 250gig that i bought from circuit city, where the enclosure is from also.

Are there special connections for this? It doesn't make sense that it would take a normal drive to replace the old one, but not be able to use a normal enclosure.

Gday

I have emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply, but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

**********
Formatting USB external hard disk
**********
Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

**********
Case A: Multi-transfer causes system crashes?
**********
The first time we met the problem.
We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. hi, I have a Toshiba store art 3.5 (I think) that can connect to my old pc running windows 7 just fine but it can not connect to my brand new Dell laptop (can see it in in device manager but not open it in any way I've tried to). I need my external to save my files from my laptop on and a new one is out of the question. also formatting the external drive should only be a LAST resort!!

if you do have a solution please explain in detail as far as you can? Computer stuff can be a bit confusing to me sometimes...

because I can see it in device manager on my laptop I updated drivers but it only said that the best drivers where already installed.

ask for any other info needed, and if necessary explain how to get it please.

Hoping somebody has experienced this - I recently purchased an HP Elite 8300, Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM. I transferred all the data from my old computer manually, using a Toshiba 2TB external hard drive. During the process, I learned that if the Toshiba is connected to the new computer during the initial boot, it caused NTI EZ Backup to load. I checked, and as far as I can tell, NTI isn't part of the new computer's software. I could disconnect the Toshiba, and the computer would boot properly, but once reconnected, even after a full formatting of the Toshiba, it still triggers NTI EZ. I had previously used the Toshiba as a backup disk, so I'm wondering if there's something residual of the partition, even after formatting. I've tried rearranging the boot order, but no success. Is there any way I can salvage my external hard drive? I'm officially out of my depth; please help.

Help !  Very frustrated since I purchased external hard drive Western Digital (WD) external hard drive "Elements 1042" for complete backup as well as a complete "Image" of Toshiba Satellite Pro T110 hard drive (120 of 240 GB used) -- using purchased NovaStor's "NovaBackUp software -- so it can be moved to my next laptop.

Running Windows 7 Home Premium operating system and all USB ports are fully functional but the software does not recognize a valid drive letter for the WD "Elements 32". Also, Windows Explorer does not display any drive letter for this external hard drive.

However, Windows "plug & play" worked since this WD "Elements 32" external drive appears as a device under Windows "Devices & Printers" window when reporting on all peripherals. It also reports under "Properties" as operational (no updated device driver available when checked that)

My ladyfriend Lori has an HP-Compaq laptop which has no issues recognizing this as a valid device with an assigned hard drive letter. She has USB 2.0 ports like my Toshiba Satellite Pro so the USB 3.0 ready external drive (WD "Elements 32") must be compatible with USB 2.0.

Could there be a USB port issue on my Toshiba Satellite Pro involving power (volts, watts, amps) that is somehow an issue when plugging in the WD "Elements 32" external hard drive ?

If so, is a possible "workaround" to use a "Cross Over" cable to connect my Toshiba with my friend's HP-Compaq where the extern... Read more

Hi all,

I got a new Toshiba Satellite L50-B notebook with Windows 8.1 64-bit installed. As I need to go a special place, I passed the notebook to a IT guy and have the whole disk encrypted using DiskCryptor. The guy told me that he cannot boot the OS, even he entered the correct password. And one more nice thing. The guy did NOT make recovery discs first!

Since the hard disk is encrypted I cannot boot it. Also I cannot do a system recovery. I booted the notebook into Linux and copied all the content in the recovery partition to a USB drive.

Now, I would like to know if I can get my machine up and running again. I don't mind all my content will be lost as it is a new machine.

Would you show me how to make a set of custom recovery disc out of the content in the recovery partition?
Do I need to format my hard disk in UEFI mode? if so, how?

Please help!

Answer:New Toshiba L50-B Hard disk encrypted! how to recover?

The simplest thing to do would be to order the recovery discs from Toshiba.

What is the full model number? Like: Satellite L50-BBT2N22

Can anyone tell me how to get the files off a Hard drive that I removed from my old Toshiba laptop which expired when I knocked a glass of wine over it.

Is there a cradle or cable I can buy that would connect the Old drive to a usb socket?

I have a Toshiba ultrabook. that someone brought to me. Every time on start up it says "Windows detected a Hard Disk problem".

Steps I took so far.

1.Tried to boot to UBCD to run HHD diagnostic on it. could not boot to the USB ODD. I tried turning off secure boot and enabled legacy support. would not boot at all. In BIOS also would not let me change to Legacy boot only UEFI. so at the point I said screw it I was going to take it out put it in a test machine and do it that way. After taking the back cover off I then realized "Duh!". It's an ultrabook it has one of the small SSD sticks that just sit on the MoBo.
2. So I then ran Toshibas HD diagnostic. witch said it was fine. Thought not sure how great these are I downloaded "SSDLife UB" witch from what I read is a good SSD diagnostic tool. that to said it was fine no issues.
3.Opened CMD ran "chkdsk /f" and sfc /scannow" to do repairs. found errors but was unable to repair.
4.I then tried to do a system repair on startup. That also said it could not repair the issue try another options. I tried several options, all of witch said the same thing.

So now I not sure what I can do. Is the only thing to do now is just reinstall the OS or is there something that I haven't tried that may work. If anyone knows of something that be great.

Thanks!

Hi,
I've got a Toshiba Tecra S1. In the last 2 years the hard disk has failed (bearings) 4 times. The laptop is just out of warranty so I bought a 40Gb Seagate (deciding the Toshiba disks are doubtful). I used the "product recovery" Cds to re-install the OS etc on the new seagate. Everything went fine until the end. After the new os had been installed a message comes up "Remove all disks and press any key". I did this the screen blanks, up comes the Toshiba splash screen, it clears, then nothing! just a cursor flashing in the top left. This sort of procedure at boot up suggests a self test failure, does any know if Toshiba laptops will only work with Toshiba disks.
I checked the disk by connecting to anoth PC using a usb adapter and it looks fine, all the OS seems installed, all the right directory structure. Obviously there is no fault with the disk or the Toshiba laptop (as the product recovery CDs managed to access the new disk to install the OS). I checked the BIOS and loaded "default" to be sure. The Bios can see the new disk. I'm lost for a solution, can anyone help?
Regards

Answer:Replacing a hard disk in a Toshiba Tecra S1

Check that disk using e.g. Partition Magic. You probably did not set the first partition 'active' , so the PC does not know that there is a bootable HD in it.

Howdy there,

just wondering if anyone can help alleviate my confused condition. Haven't messed around with laptops much, mostly desktops, so when going to reformat my friends laptop as a favour, i went about it the same way i would a desktop. Needless to say big mistake.

I reformatted the hard drive, but now i have no access to anything, and seeing as i've read the bios is only accessable thru windows itself.

I've made win98se,win2000, and win95 boot disks, no luck. I've yet to be able to copy over system files to the hardisk, yet the computer had win98se working in so fashion maybe a few days earlier. I have no recovery cd, as i'm in japan, and my friends bought this wonderful piece of equipment used.

Not sure if there is a special mode i have to put this computer in to reformat, or if i neglected to do something to the bios prior to reformatting, and if i should just go and flash the bios to something new, so maybe i can put win2k on here. thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Answer:Old toshiba satellite 320 CDT: problems after reformatted hard disk

Hi Bort

In my opinion you expect a too much from this ?oldie?. I think that W98SE is acceptable for this unit and that runs just with 233MHz and has just 32 MB of RAM. I have found the information that this unit has been delivered with W95. Some drivers for W95 you can find under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com . Go to Support & Downloads and than on Download drivers. Under Product type choose ?Archive?.

I believe that W2K will be too much for this unit.

If the BIOS will recognize the new HDD, I don?t see any reasons why the Recovery CD should not function?
But before you will start the installation from the Recovery CD you should format the HDD. You could use the original Windows XP CD for HDD formatting!!

I wonder if there exists a software (or a tweak to Toshiba RAID utilities/drivers) that would allow monitoring of the HDD temperature.

Well-known utilities like SpeedFan, HDTune etc, that I tried, and that work fine at least with the IDE drives, either do not notice the RAID SATA hard disk at all on my Tecra S3, or they cannot access the S.M.A.R.T information about the temperature (possibly the information cannot pass through Toshiba RAID drivers..)

Thnx for any feedback.

Answer:Temperature monitoring with Toshiba RAID hard disk on Tecra S3

Hi

I use the ?Everest? home edition.
But I am a owner of the notebook with a IDE HDD drive and to tell the truth I?m not sure if it will support the RAID feature.

But you can test it.
This utility reports the HDD and the CPU temperature and provides many useful and detailed information about the notebook hardware specifications.

Hopefully it will works

Yesterday I was about to send an e-mail when I decided instead to go to lunch. I left the computer turned on when I left. When I returned I was surprised to see the following onscreen message:

Windows detected a hard disk problem

Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

I was given two options:

(1) Start the backup process

(2) Ask me again later
If the disk fails before the next warning, you could lose all of the programs and documents on the disk.

I then clicked on Show details and was warned to back up my important information immediately. Moreover, I was instructed to try not to use my computer until the hard disk has been repaired or replaced.

Under Which disk is failing the name of the hard disk is given. At the end it reads ATA Device.

Starting at around noon on Sunday I received this message twice in less than an hour. It's now 14 hours later and it hasn't reappeared. At someone's suggestion I am currently running CHKDSK and waiting for the results.

Does getting this message invariably mean there's a serious problem, or could it be received inadvertently, without any actual problem. At any rate, I've spent all day backing up all the stuff I care to save, just in case there is something amiss.

Answer:Windows detected a hard disk problem on my Toshiba (Vista) laptop

Well, it's Monday afternoon, and my laptop continues to work very, very well -- no signs yet of any hard drive problem. Can I expect it to conk out at any minute? Or could the warning message have been nothing more than a false positive?

By the way, I ran CHKDSK last night. When I went to bed it was at 15%, so I figured it would be finished by the time I woke up. When I got to my laptop this morning I expected to see a lengthy list of CHKDSK results. Much to my surprise I saw instead my normal screen: wallpaper and icons. So I clicked on GOOGLE CHROME and started surfing the Net.

Now I have a few more questions. Where in the heck do I find my CHKDSK results? Could it be that my laptop, indeed, did have hard drive problems which now have been repaired by CHKDSK? If so, wouldn't the CHKDSK results give me an answer? If there are problems which are irreparable, would the CHKDSK results tell me so? I would just like to know where I stand. At this point I have absolutely no idea if my hard drive is, or is not, about to die. It would be good to be able to find out, if indeed that's possible. I would be most grateful to anyone who might be able to help. Thank you.

Hi I've got a one and a half year old laptop similar to this one.
http://www.toshiba.co.uk/discontinue...te-p50t-c-109/

It suddenly became really slow to an unusable level a few days ago and got a windows warning saying there's some issues with the hard disk. It asked me to run diagnostic and automatic repair. When I did that, it went into a loop of boot screen and different options that I can recover/reset windows, etc and I can never go back to the windows anymore. I've tried resetting/restoring and command line chkdsk command, but none of those work so far. It happened once before, that I had to reinstall windows but I'm now suspecting it might be a hardware issue. Can someone suggest what I can do to fix the laptop? Thanks

Answer:how to know when was my external hard disk was used?

Hello and welcome to the sevens forum.

First I don't think you can tell when your external hard drive was used, unless you have something on your system that would tell you if it was used or messed with your kind a out of luck so to speak.

You can always set up a password on your external hard drive to lock people out.

could u guys suggest some hard disk with space around 80-120gb or so.....
price factor not more than... 60-70$

well thats the cash i have for now.......

please answer to with ur best ability.......

Answer:which external hard disk to go for......?

Well i myself would buy a high capacity internal hard drive an then put it in a enclosure, external drives that have a decent storage space tend to get pricey. For instance £45 for a 320gb drive an £15 - £20 for a enclosure makes a big difference in the price.

If you where just saving sage details on there or text files ect a smaller drive would be fine, but programs, ISO files, films ect take up a lot of space.

Rookie, i'm not positive about this but I think it can be done as long as your BIOS gives you that option. If you install it successfully and go into you BIOS menu, you could change the boot order so that it searches for your external hard drive first.

first of all im using win 8,1 64 bit .
its been some time that i cant install the windows updates.
when i hit install and it says that is downloading the updates it freezes.
so without the new updates i see that i cant safely remove my hard disk(external)
so im removing my external hard drive just like that
and today my 2tb seagate external became raw(one of the two partitions)
i really need your help here to restore the disk to its normal status and find a solution with win updates cause i dont want this to happen again.

wating asap for your answer
thanks in advance

Answer:raw external hard disk

Firstly, I would not have the external drive attached when doing updates.

That being said I would download Testdisk for Windows and unzip the file to a folder on your desktop. Run Testdisk and do a QuickSearch. After a QuickSearch does it detect both partitions on the external drive? Highlight the RAW partition and press the "P" key. Do you see your files on the RAW partition?

Windows  This is the file to download

If doing a QuickSearch does not detect both partitions then do a deeper Search.

Do you have enough space on your internal drive to copy the files from the RAW partition?

Does anyone know of any external hard disk drives that run on linux?

Answer:External hard disk

New external hard drives use USB 2.0, Firewire, etc. These devices are immediately recognized by Windows XP and 2000 as soon as they're connected. Doesn't Linux support this? I thought it would since it uses the same kernel as XP and 2000. I don't use myself.

it was NTFS? I doubt running check disk would be of help, or accessing via a Linux Live CD. Sounds like you deleted the partition. (Been there, done that ;-( )You could try fixmbr command from the recovery console..., it is on xp installation disks and can be installed as a boot option. There are also many freeware utilities you could try here, probably the best first step. http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads38.html

Sounds like the disk has died. If you don't have any data on there, I would try formatting with Computer Management.Otherwise, I would try taking it apart, removing the disk and connecting it as a slave to a desktop machine. You'll need a 2.5" IDE to 3.5" IDE Convertor for this.

Question: External hard disk

Thanks to your help my PC is now usable and quick again. On your advice I downloaded CC Cleaner it really is FREE and fantastic! While I was looking for a fix I downloaded all my photos onto CDs. Now I'm thinking of buying an external hard disk. I have thousands of pictures and I reckon a 500GB portable disk would do it. Has anybody else done this and does it work ? Any advice please ? B.J.

Answer:External hard disk

An external drive is good for temporary but they are still volatile, meaning there is a possibility for errors i.e drive crashing, cant access data etc, a better long term solution is to burn your pics to DVD-Rs and store them safely away.

The USB Protection i use is USB Disk Security and i dont know if this options (in image) does something about it..
Thanks in advance

Answer:External Hard Disk Help

This most likely is due to USB Disk Security software, if you changed something recently within, I'd try to reverse it.

Answer:External Hard Disk

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

Please post complete details on your environment and we'll be glad to help you out.

If it's just a formatting question, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, and you can partition and format the drive there.

Question: external hard disk

hello!my brother bought an 80Gb 2.5" external hard diskfor my pc. I transferred 74.Gb and have 37.9 Mb left. Butnext to total size it says 74.5Gb. Where has therest of the 5.5Gb gone??? Can someone explain?Thank you!!

Answer:external hard disk

It is because manufacturers use 1000 bytes for a KB when in fact it is 1024 bytes. So your 80GB was never 80GB80,000,000,000,000 /1024 /1024/ 1024 = 74.5 ish

Question: External Hard Disk

I have a LaCie 250gb External Drive - originally I had three partitions, one of 100+GB (G), one of 50+ (P)and one at 1gb (O). The latter proved to be too small and, using PartitionMagic 8 I resized it to 2gb (O) -taking the extra, I thought, from the 50+ (P)partition. However, in the process I seem to have 'lost' the largest partition (G) - containing my backup image. Anyone have an idea what happened? I have run Partitionmagic again - it lists the drive and unlike Partitions O and P which are marked as status 'None' the G Partition is marked 'active'.Please assist in unravelling this problem.

Answer:External Hard Disk

Below are the entries as they appear in Partitionmagic - hopefully this will give someone, better equipped than I, a clue as to what has happened.Lacie (*.) Just a thought.. please could you experts advise? Have a laptop and have been told the harddisk's broken (checkdisk revealed bad sectors and couldn't fix it;) If I got an external usb harddrive, would it work? Or would it not work, if the IDE controller's gone (and I don't know if it is) Please don't laugh if this sounds silly - I only know a little bit about computers and the rest I'm making up as I go along, but I just wondered...? I don't have the skills myself to do anything internally to the laptop and was quoted several hundred pounds for a new motherboard.

Answer:hard disk gone - will external do the job?

on whether the BIOS gives the option to boot from a USB device. It might be possible, but it's probably cumbersome if it is.Good luck,Regards,Simsy

What could be the problem of this?

The USB cable? or my drive is damage?

I also try insert to different computer and all the USB port front or back same result.

This may not be the right instructions for your drive:

Because you did not offer more than it being a WD 320GB external.

i have a 500gb Freecom external hard drive, i use it for both storing files and multimedia playback via my xbox 360, it was setup as a Fat32 format, but i needed to store files larger than 4gb on it so i took everything off reformatted it to NTFS and put the large files on there, now i found out the xbox 360 wont read this format, so im guessing the answer is to partition it? one side being NTFS other Fat32? is that possible and also do i have to remove all of my files back across again took 4 hours last time. it has 200gb left.
what program to use as well, like a free one if possible!

I have a freecom 80gb external drive connected to my windows 2000 pro system. At the moment it is formatted NTFS. I want to reformat to FAT32 because I want to give it to my dad who is running windows ME.There are 4 bad sectors on the drive that I can't fix. The disk works OK on my system but when I try to format back to fat 32 using disk management tool it get to 99% then I get an error saying the volume is too large.Does anyone have any ideas on any disk tools that could help me out or just any pointers would be great.Thank you.

Answer:External Hard Disk problems

Windows XP, and it may be the same for 2000, cannot format a partition larger than 32GB as FAT32, although it can use a larger partition. Can the drive itself, if it is a standard 3.5" hard drive, be removed from the enclosure and connected directly to the PC's IDE cable? With a Windows 98 "boot floppy", it could then be FDISK'd to remove the "non-DOS" partition, repartitioned and formatted as FAT32 in DOS.To create a partition larger than 32GB in DOS, use FDISK 1.2.1 from click here

Answer:External hard disk problem

Does it spin up? Is it making any noise (Clicks?).
If it was running when it fell, there's every chance it's dead.
HD s are not a good choice for backing up important files.
Cloud or optical storage is safer and more reliable.

My brand new hard disk slid off the sideboard on to the floor
Now it does not spin - has anybody stripped down a Seagate hard disk?
Apart from throwing it away, can anybody give me some advice as to how I might get it working again?
Thanks.

Answer:EXTERNAL HARD DISK - NO SPIN

I would pull it out of the enclosure and hook it directly to your computer in case the issue is with the enclosure and not the hard drive.

My USB connected external hard disk has stopped working. It appears as "Local Disk (G). In properties, it says "Used Space 0 bytes" "Free Space 0 bytes"When I look in "Hardware" it tells me "this device is working properly."When I try to format it, I get the message "Cannot format".File system in properties is listed as "RAW"About the same time my PC refused to boot up, until I unplugged this hard disk.Running XP home SP3.Is the disk terminally dead, or is there something I might try to revive it?

Answer:Cannot format external hard disk

In Vista, Control Panel > Administrative Tools Select Computer Management then Disk management, also similar for XP. Your drive should be listed there, you will have to format it by right clicking on it and selecting format. Make sure you have the right before doing so, you will loose all data on the drive! Select full format as it's a virgin drive, then go watch TV or something as it takes hours, literally. The above was post before in the forum and this is a copy and paste of the thread.Does it help you?

Hey,

I have a Maxtor 200GB ONETOUCH II hard drive and it shows up in My Computer, but when I click on it, it says hard disk is ot accessible, the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. I have years of school papers and stuff on this...How do I get it back? Someone please help, freaking out here. By the way, I am running windows server, I have not been able to find any software that is compatible, so leave suggestions please.

Thanks

Answer:external hard disk problems

Try the thing with another computer or at least another operating system (a Live CD?).

Take the hard drive out of the enclosure and see if it works when connected directly inside a computer.

ZAR lets you restore 4 folders at a time for free I believe, so you can throw that at the disk when everthing else fails.

Next time, make backups of your important stuff

What is the safest way to protect data on an external hard drive, when using the hard drive on computers other than your own.

Is there a good recommended software I can use to encrypt my hard drive and have it available to be decrypted on another computer and to keep all the encryption software on the same drive?

I have heard of some simple security programs that come with some hard drives, but I'm looking for an open source or similar solution that is well documented in terms of security.

I would like to take a 1 terabyte hard drive around to different places and I want to protect my information.

My home computer is Windows 7 Professional and I will use windows computers elsewhere also. What kind of portable software is available?

Or ... did I answer my question. Is the best bet, to simply encrypt files with something like pgp?

Answer:Safe use of external hard disk

Welcome
I am not one of the security people, but I have learned a trick and use it myself. If possible turn off the Hard Drive at night. Those creeps out there writing, virus and trying to steal information often work at night, because you are probably asleep and will not notice unusual activity on your computer. In addition if you turn off the hard drive at night, and when not in use, less chance that a virus caught will spread to the hard drive, when you initially catch it.
