Black screen (or screen refresh) during the process of start up. T400, Vista home basic.

Question: Black screen (or screen refresh) during the process of start up. T400, Vista home basic.

My 2 weeks old T400 Vista home basic can start up successfully. But every time when I start or restart it, during the start process, after inputting the password, there are 4 times of black screen (or screen refresh). Is it normal? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Black screen (or screen refresh) during the process of start up. T400, Vista home basic.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

ok I am usually the one fixing computers, but I have ran in to a problem that I cannot fix.

My father's computer is an eMachine from wal-mart running Windows Vista Home Basic. Recently he called me and said the screen was going black.

I came over and when it goes to the log-in screen, I enter his password and it goes to a black screen. The mouse will still move around but nothing else.

CTL-ALT-DEL will not work. I have used a recover disc check memory and nothing shows up. Safe mode will not boot except command prompt, the others goes to the black screen as well.

On command prompt I was able to run chkdsk and this is what I got:

69744639 KB total disk space
54271044 KB in 182392 files
97108 KB in 25006 indexes
0 KB in bad sectors
327483 KB in use by the system
65536 KB occupied by the log file
15049004 KB available on the disk

4096 bytes in each allocation unit
17436159 total allocation units on disk
3762251 allocation units available on disk

Any ideas?

I got it to go into command prompt safe mode and decided to look at windows tasklist and there were numerous svchost.exe running so I terminiated them and got it to load safemode windows, but when I restarted it still went back to the black screen

Hi, As the title says I'm running into the problem where when I click on the battery icon to switch my graphics card to the high performance standard which I thought would enable my ATI card my screen goes black. It is also not as if my computer freezes either as I have music on and it keeps on playing. It just seems as if my screen just switched off. I tried uninstalling the ATI drivers and reinstalling the new drivers that came out as of April 28th, but still no luck. Furthermore, when I try turning on Catalyst Control Center it says that the active gpu is not supported. I'm not sure if that means that Catalyst isn't turning on because my graphics card hasn't been switched to discrete mode or if I just don't have the ATI card to begin with. I've had this notebook for around 4 months and used it mostly for business purposes but recently decided to use it on a few video games and just noticed I ran into this problem. When I look at the drivers that are installed it states that it is a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. I know for a fact that I bought the unit that had the switchable graphics as it also states so in my invoice sheet. However, I'm now curious to whether I have the switchable graphics card and if there is a way to test it. If that is not the case, is this a driver issue that is similar to the problems of the BSOD some people seem to be having and thus a driver problem? Thank you

Answer:t400 vista 64 when switching to high performance screen goes black

No clue but here's a really dumb question:  when you switch to discrete graphics, is the screen black, or just very very dark?  I wonder if there's a customization in your power settings that is turning your backlight off or way down in performance mode. The "active GPU not supported" is presumably because you are running on integrated at the time - or I assume so since otherwise you couldn't see the message. Is your BIOS set to switchable graphics enabled, and detectable by the OS? Like I said, dumb questions... Z.

I have a Vista Home Basic desktop that, for the past week, has been crashing once a day with a blue screen. I have had the computer for six years, don't know if age has to do with it. I have tried running Malwarebytes in safe mode with networking every time it crashes but it doesn't find anything. Any suggestions on what I should do to get rid of this problem?

Background: A week ago on vacation, I opened my HP Pavilion dv7-2173cl (a laptop running Vista Home Premium SP2) and suddenly, green and black lines began forming across its screen. I was later told this was a pressure crack, although that is not what I'm posting about. Freaked out, that day I turned the computer off and on several times using only the power button, once foolishly interrupting a "Startup Repair" process.

Problem: When I got home I hooked up the laptop to my TV so I could see what was going on. After attempting to turn it on many times, I eventually got the BSOD with a STOP:0x0000c1f5 error. I couldn't access the Recovery Module (even to backup) or Safe Mode. Going into personally uncharted territory, I booted from a Linux System Rescue CD to delete the $TxfLog file that was apparently the cause of the problem. I no longer get the BSOD, I get a black screen (KSOD?) (sometimes w/mouse, sometimes w/o) after the "yellow bar" loading screen. I still can't get into Safe Mode but I was able to use a Vista repair CD I downloaded to (finally) backup onto an external hard drive.

What I've Done So Far: I've run chkdsk, checked the memory and hard disk from BIOS options, and run Startup repair. I did the kind of Windows backup where everything goes to one file.

I'd prefer not to start from scratch if I can avoid it. Thanks so much for any and all help guys, I appreciate it a lot.

Hello I recently used my computer this morning and it was working fine. I just then got home from school today and it was blue-screening on startup...I tried switching the RAM sticks into the different slots (there being only 2, I reversed them). That didn't work and I am confused on what to do now.

System specs:
AMD athlon 2 X4 quad core processor @ 2.8ghz
asus m4a78lt-m le motherboard
xfx ati radeon hd 4890 1gb graphics card
western digital 500GB caviar black hard drive
windows vista 64 bit home basic
corsair 850W PSU
OCZ gold edition 4GB ddr3 RAM.

I am in a hurry to go to an important family event so I cannot really add any more information here, if anything else is needed please reply and tell me ASAP, as I am in dire need of a computer now since I have to catch up on projects for school.

Only thing I know about the blue screen is this:
Technical Information
STIO: 0X0000007B (0XFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0XFFFFFA60020729CA, 0XFFFFFA6000.....FFFFA600198BE6C0)

Those may not be the 100% correct characters in the screen, but as soon as I get back I will post the picture of the blue screen I took with my digital camera.

For a while now, I have noticed my Y50's screen turning black at apparently random times while in use?usually while gaming, but not always. Most of the time, I can fix it by closing the lid and reopening it. Other times, I must restart the computer for it to continue working as normal. I am fairly certain that this is due to a faulty screen, as my laptop is one of two identical laptops that were ordered at the same time (the other Y50 has already been shipped in for a screen replacement several months ago, which fixed the problem). This issue has been generally manageable, with slight interruptions here and there; but recently the screen's refresh rate seems to have lowered (not exactly sure what's going on here). It looks to be around 10-20 FPS (just guessing), but with large amounts of screen tearing.I was thinking that this second issue was due to the summer heat, however my laptop was running at 55 C today and the issue persists.Hopefully this second problem is related to the first, but I feel it's worth mentioning anyways. I can provide any other information that is needed. Thanks for any help.

Ever since I switched my operating system from XP to Vista Home Basic on my Compaq Presario V6000 notebook, my machine has been plagued with intermittent screen flickering. It does not go black, and it doesn't seem to matter what application I'm using at the time. Awhile back, I found some information online about disabling a service related to use of an external monitor, and I tried that, but to no avail.
Suspecting that the problem was related to Vista (and hoping it wasn't my hardware), I installed Ubuntu Linux as a dual boot, and sure enough, I experience no flickering in Linux.
Any ideas or suggestions on how I can further troubleshoot or fix this problem?

BTW, I maintain updated AVG free antivirus software and Comodo firewall. I'm pretty confident that I don't have any viruses.

I started installing my own apps once I got my laptop and I noticed it did freeze on me a couple of times even when the laptop was new.  I didn't think much of it... I am seeing the freezing/hanging a lot more often now.  The the mouse cursor is movable but nothing else is responsive when this happens.  I have to perform a hard reboot to get my system back again. I do not know what causes this but one app that causes it all the time is PC Doctor.  It displays its startup message about some connection engine but then the system is not responsive no matter how long I wait. Also, my System Update app does not start.  It complains about a Runtime Error involving the VC++ library.  When I looked in the installed programs list, VC++ 2005 and 2008 are both installed.  I assume some application I installed added the 2008 version from looking at the time stamp.  Perhaps Quicken or similar app could have installed it. Other times, it hangs right from the start when Windows is starting and I try to start an app (nothing specific - Firefox, etc.) Could this cause any issues? I tried running memtest86+ as well ---->  The first time it froze just like Vista at about the 82% mark.  I ran it 4 times since then and it passed every time.  Not sure what that means. Since I couldn't run PC Doctor in Windows, I downloaded the bootable CD version.  I'm about to try that tonight and see what happens.&n... I have my cousins laptop - Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop - Model: PP41L, With Windows Vista Basic, abd am having issues...

Laptop reboots at the Windows Logon Screen when trying to log into windows. I can log into Windows through Safe mode (and with networking).

Been trying to get an error message off laptop, through BSOD, but reboots too quick to grab.

Have asked a mate and he has said that it refers to video drivers.

Logged into Safe Mode with networking, and tried to download drivers from Dell website, but errors come up with download half way through...

Tried to also re-install windows, using the dell re-installation disc, but unable to see DVD Drive...

Are you able to assist?

Answer:BSOD & restart loop at windows logon screen - Vista Home Basic

Try to Start in Safe Mode, once it does, Right click on My Computer Select Properties, then on the left pane select Advanced System Settings

Select the 3rd Settings option under Start-up & recovery.
Uncheck Automatically Restart

This wont help you in anyway to get rid of the issue but will buy you time to note down the BSOD error.

Hey all ... great forum you have here ... Jerry Lippey/WUGNET at Laptop Computing steered me here to Brink (Shawn)'s tutorial: Repair Install For Vista - Vista Forums.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300D -01Q (PSLC0C-01Q08C) that is running Vista Home Premium (SP unknown). The kernel completely loads to a black screen (active / backlit black) with only a moveable mouse pointer.

None of the Recovery Options have helped and I can't do an Upgrade Install because I can't get to the GUI.

My priority and objective is to save this system and preserve files, programs and settings.

I read Brink's How to Repair and Verify the Integrity of Vista System Files with System File Checker and I'd like to try sfc /scannow, however, I get the following:

"Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Searching for 'Windows Resource Protection ... ', I found this thread:
error code: 80040154 - Windows update fails and Flavius' solution post ... but I thought I'd better post first to see if I've gone wrong elsewhere.

I'm booting from a Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 OEM DVD, then choosing 'Repair ... ' and from the System Recovery Options GUI, 'Command Prompt'. This opens a command prompt window entitled:

Administrator: X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

... so ... presumably, I am in an elevated command prompt ...

sfc /verifyonly gets the same result as sfc /scannow.

What should I do to get sfc to run for me?

Thanks, Kevin

Answer:Vista Home Premium boots to black screen

Hello Kevin McIntosh,
Have you tried this in safe mode ?, do you get the same error results ?, may be worth a try.
Also, when did this start and what caused it, new software/hardware, a change in the system somewhere maybe, if you can pin it to a particular date, a system restore may help sort it.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

Hi all,

I have been using my Vista Premium machine, which I bought 1 month ago without any problems until today. I tried to boot the machine this morning, and it booted to the "loading windows vista" screen and then the screen turns black, and it freezes with no hard drive acrivity. I left it for 10 minutes before turning it off and restarting.

It happened again on a second boot, and I noted that the mouse and keyboard had no power when it froze. I tried to boot to the premium disc and use startup repair, which found nothing, but offered to do a restore to a previous point.. I agreed, it restored, and restarted.

Same problem again. So I restarted it and booted into safe mode without a problem. I tried to boot again, and it failed. Any ideas of what to do? It just seems like a really wierd problem.

I also noted that my router didn't have a light for the cable connected to my NIC when it froze

I haven't changed any hardware since I bought the machine (Q6600 Quad Core, 2ghz 800mhz ram, 500gig hdd, 8800GTS). I am running the newest beta nvidia drivers, and will try to uninstall that when I boot into safe mode (fingers crossed), but the loss of power to the keyboard and mouse are disconcerting. They are both USB devices, so I can also try to boot with just the kb and mouse plugged in.

The two updates my system had before this problem were MS updates of Outlook Junk Filter and a driver update for my network card that looked wierd, but I installed it.

my hard drive started to run slow, so I rebooted, and when I did an error message came up saying could not boot...I ran the vista repair disc, and it says it cannot repair, that the following error has occurred: c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe can't be found or is corrupt or missing. I went to the command prompt and ran a chkdsk /r and hit hit enter, after going thru almost 40% of stage 4 of 5, it says not enough disc space to repair, unexpected error has occured...the harddrive is a Seagate 250 and has about 50% free space. Answer:Vista Home Premium Problem Black Screen Error

Hi Mickey,

I'm not an expert, but your problem sounds almost exactly like what happened to me last summer with my HP laptop. Only difference was, my error had something to do with winlogon.exe, I think. I was not able to do a system repair either because of errors. I ended up having to replace the hard drive. Sorry, this probably isn't much help, but it sounds like a problem with your hard drive, and you might have to replace it.

for the last several months I have had a problem with my screen going black and the tower beeping. Started after I installed update for Nvidia(hope that is right). Restored to a point before update was installed and have not re-installed the update. Seemed to help for a while. Then screen started going black and tower beeping at first when computer was idle but now while we are using it. Took it to computer repair guy who said had viruses and cleaned it up. Was good for about a week then same thing happened again. Took it back to computer guy and he said he couldn't find anything wrong. Now it is getting worse and happening more frequently. Also sometimes explorer stops responding and won't restart, control, alt, delete doesn't do anything. Can anybody help with this before I throw computer in garbage?

Hello and thank you for reading this.
When installing a few new updates to my Windows Vista 64 bit SP2, the computer hung at the shut down screen for over an hour.  After manually shutting down the computer it was unable to boot up again. This has happened before, not with a forces shut down, but the same problem on start up.  I was able to rectify it before by booting from the install disc but I am not able to have any luck this time around.
When starting up normally, the computer starts up in regular fashion, however after the Windows logo and the green loading bar, the screen goes blank and hangs for as long as I am willing to leave it.
When trying to start up from disc, the computer starts up in regular fashion but after the white loading bar where it is starting up windows services, and then the green loading bar with the Windows logo, the screen lights up with the Vista background (blue back ground) but simply hangs there for as long as I am willing to leave it.  I left it over night and it hung at that screen without giving me the language select or any further recovery options.
Here are the steps above and beyond that I have already taken.
-  Booting from C: in safe mode (when loading, stops at windows\system32\Drivers\aswRvrt.sys)
-  Booting from C: with last known good configuration (hangs on blank screen)

Okay, I've seen many people with this problem, and all of the solutions provided do not seem to work for me. I've had the problem of vista hanging at a black screen every now and then, but after a few restarts it would boot up fine. Now though, its not booting up at all, displays the vista loading screen and then hangs at a black screen. I've tried running safe mode(s) and last known configuration to no avail. Safe mode hangs after it gets to crcdisk.sys (I've let it sit there for about 30 minutes) and last known configuration just hangs at the black screen too. I've tried inserting my factory restore cd, and it loads up to the screen with a vista background and a mouse, but does nothing else (I've let that one load for about an hour or two) I would very much like some help please.

My screen goes black in the early stages of bootup. I can start safe mode and have done a system restore to like 9 days ago before Windows Update but my computer still will not start normally. Read some advice that this may be due to conflict with Vista Update and I have asked and recieved via email a hotfix application from Microsoft but this will also not run when the computer is in safe mode. I have also uninstalled recent Windows updates (10th Feb). I have also scanned using Zone Alarm and no virus was found. In Device Manager, I found that 6TO4 network adaptor cannot start. I have searched this forum and did not find a solution. Kindly assist! Thanks!

Hi All,
I have problem with my laptop that has windows vista, as I am able to boot in safe mode and see my desktop screen, but if I try to boot in normal mode after entering credentials

I get the black screen with mouse pointer

Note:The system came with vista pre-installed  and did not include boot disk.

I tried following two options successfully ,but no luck when I boot in normal mode getting black screen with mouse pointer.

By restarting  the system, and holding the F8 Key until a black screen menu appears.

a) Startup Repair

I got the message startup repair could not detect a problem

b) System Restore
Even tried this option (System Restore option in safe mode)
Any help would be appreciated

I have a Samsung Laptop with intel Core 2 Duo P8400.
It has Vista SP1 installed (and Ubuntu)

It ran fine for 6 months.
Yesterday I had a virus infection, which AVG found and removed.
Since then, Vista will not start in normal mode anymore.

What happens instead is that during startup, I briefly see the mouse cursor, then the screen turns black, and stays black, with HDD activity becoming one blip every second.
It does not react to keystrokes or Crtl-Alt-Del, the power button seems to turn the screen from black to off, though, but HDD continues to blip.

Safe mode works, and safe mode with network drivers also works, I can connet to the web.

Ntblog shows sometimes
Did not load Driver AFD.SYS
as last entry, sometimes
Loaded driver \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\cdfs.sys
as last entry.

I tried Vista restore to a previous restore point, but still the same problem happens.
I tried msconfig turning off all drivers and still the same problem happens.
I tried Samsung laptop recovery of Vista files, and still the same problem happens.

What else can I try?

Hi folks.

I spent days and weeks to try and find a solution for the black screen of death that i was encountering after having upgraded my OS from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

As soon as the upgrade process was over, instead of taking me back to my new Windows 7 desktop, the screen was black after the start up windows logo. I thought that it was part of the upgrade process, so i gave it half an hour before restarting my laptop just to see a completely black desktop without ANY icon or anything. The only thing that i could do was to press CTRL+AlT+DEL to bring up the windows log off/shut down menu but that was basically it. I could not by any means summon the Task Manager and i could not see any icon on my desktop (so, Prevx is pretty useless in this situation). I tried booting my Laptop on Safe Mode and it booted without any problem. Then, i disabled my display driver from Device Manager and i rebooted 7 normally and it loaded windows 7 with the custom display driver for 7, meaning that i would not get the Aero style and that my graphics card would not work at its best (but it still works).

I have read about many people complaining about this problem without actually finding a solution for their problem on threads all around the internet. If the symptoms of your Black screen of death sound identical to mine, then this solution should work.

It doesn't matter what version of display driver you have. Just load windows 7 and let the black screen of death appear. When it does... Read more

I'm getting the black screen with movable cursor or KSOD (Black Screen Of Death) on Windows Vista.

What happens:
The system powers on.
Start windows normally
Windows splash screen
-> Black screen <-

What I can do:
I CAN enter BIOS and have reset the default settings.
I CAN press F8 to give me advanced boot options, but all options have the same result, apart from "Repair your computer".
I CAN load the "Repair your computer" option.
I CAN move the mouse around the screen.
I CAN press shift 5 times to get a dialogue to appear, but no control panel.
I CAN press the power button to shut down the system.
I CAN start up in safe mode, which is exactly the same, but with lower resolution.

I CANNOT seem to do anything else.

However, there are workarounds to accessing the hard drive:

I CAN use MSDaRT or the System Recovery Tool.
I CAN use the hard drive as an external USB hard drive on another machine.

What I've tried:
Startup Repair - Could not detect a problem.
System Restore - No restore points.
Windows Complete PC Restore - A valid restore location could not be found.
Windows Memory Diagnostics - No errors.
SFC Scan - No problems.
Stand alone system sweeper - No problems.
Hotfix Uninstall - Nothing to uninstall.

I also COULD do a partial or full "Packard Bell Recovery", which is essentially like reinstalling windows. I DO NOT want to do this.

I'm sure this is just a simple software issue real... Read more

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

I recently bought a HP DV9548US Notebook running Windows Vista Home Premium. Lately, when I turn the computer on it takes about 30 seconds to get to the page where I choose my account and logon with a password. The strange part that is bothering me is that it takes about 1 minute to reach the actual desktop. I've seen similar posts, but not for my Vista version. So, I know there is probably something wrong, but not sure how to approach a solution.

Question: T400 black screen

Hi there, I recently bought a seller-refurbished ThinkPad T400.  This week I had the problem that when switching it on, the screen would go super dark after about 1 second. I could still see the icons but they were too dark to recognise properly. Now my friend google told me it might be the inverter or a fuse. Since I still have a coupole of days warranty, I have already contacted the seller and wanted to send it back to be replaced. However, yesterday I switched it on and everything worked as normal.  I presume that if it was the inverter or a fuse then it wouldn't go back and work without any issues. My question is, could it have been casued by a wrong setting or anything else than a hardware issue?  It would look pretty weird to send back a perfectly working laptop to be replaced now.. Thanks in advance

Answer:T400 black screen

If it happened at the BIOS boot splash, it's probably a hardware issue. Could have been a bad cable.

i know theres millions of threads about this but they dont seem to help anything (this may be wrong spot to post but i didnt find any other)

So the problem is when i installed ATI Catalyst Center i went to my monitors Hz aka Refresh Rate, i didnt accutaly know what it does so i went to change it (Not Good idea) and my monitor just went black and the message came up: 'Out of range!'....

and yes ive tried to start in safemode but same message comes :/

so yes i need help!

Answer:Black screen after changing refresh rate

Hi Pot
Welcome to Techspot.

Is there an auto button on your monito? Try turning the monitor off then back on and also try hitting the auto button. Sometimes this resets the monitor.

Do you have integrated graphics on your mobo? If you do unplug the graphics card plug your monitor onto you mobo and try rebooting.

You should be able to uninstall the graphics drivers and ATI Catalyst Center.

This should re-set the monitor for you and correct the refresh rate. Once uninstalled plug the graphics card back in re-install the software and see if that corrects the problems.

Hope this helps

Okay, so yesterday I recieved a blue screen error on my laptop IRQL error stop code: 0x0000000A. I took it into best buy and repaired the systme through previous dates like maybe 15 times before it finally took on one(that I had already tried) and finally started back up.

I began to reinstall my programs and modifications I'd made to vista. RocketDock, Logon mod(to change appearance of logon screen), etc. I got to Vistaglazz did the system mod rebooted, worked fine, then I did the theme mod and rebooted and this error started again.

Ive successfully repaired this multiple times, ran memtest twice, gone through Event viewer and found a WMI error @ Event ID:10 found a forum that had a script to run to correct this, rebooted and it corrected.

However, The problem still exists.

I am at my end. I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this error or why it continues to perpetuate. There are NO other devices connected to my laptop, at the moment theres only like 4 programs AIM, Firefox, FFXI a MMORPG, and notepad++. I just don't know what else there is to do aside from wiping and reformating using the system restore files to reset the system to default settings. I've backed up all my important files so if I need to I am willing but I'd seriously rather not.

Some info on the laptop:

As the thread title says, my lenovo t400's screen recently started flashing. It wasn't that bad at first but it increased in frequency and started to be very annoying. I noticed changing from battery to cable would temporarily stop it, also turning down the brightness helped. However the problem started getting worse and now when I am forced to have it on the lowest brightness settings. If I turn it up it starts flashing erratic and then the screen turns off. The system itself keeps working though and if I turn the laptop off or in sleep mode and then turn it on again the screen "works" again (still with flashing). Ofcourse if I left the brightness above its lowest level it will instantly go black again. Also most likely related, half of the screen (left side) has taken on an "redish" collor. What could be the problem and is it something I can fix myself?

Answer:t400 screen flashes then goes black

If you were to boot into to the BIOS, does the left side of the screen show "redish" color?Try moving your LCD panel back and forth, does it stop it?Could be caused by faulty LCD cable or faulty LCD Panel. Also try plugging it with an external monitor to confirm if its caused by faulty SBO.Thanks

Hi all, I have a T400 that has been having an issue with the screen going black. The mouse moves, but nothing I click on responds & then the screen goes black & comes right back up. It doesn't restart, I don't lose internet connection when it happens. It dosen't behave like a loose cable (that I've read about. Doesn't happen when I move the screen). It is not at startup. It is seemingly random. It can be days or even weeks between occurrances. I'll be working, everything is great and's not. 10 sec later, back to normal. Any thoughts? I did upgrade the HD to an SSD quite a while ago, and other than this issue, the thing has been a champ. I'm looking at replacing it if I can't figure this out, but I'd much prefer to get it stable. Thanks for any leads you may have.

History - T400 (2767-31U), Win 7.  LCD screen broken due to a drop. Laptop still worked with an external monitor via VGA slot and I ordered a replacement LCD. The replacement finally (used-off ebay) arrived and I followed the HMM manual and replaced the LCD. But it still does not work. I can continue to use the ext monitor without any issues. The replacement LCD was the full assembly not just the LCD screen. Here is what I noticed: 1. When booting up, I see the Thinkpad logo very very faintly before it goes fully black again.2. All the LCD panel lights work fine - Wireless, BT, HDD, Battery, Power etc etc including the reading light.3. The laptop recognizes when I open and close the lid and switches on the ext monitor accordingly. Here is what I did (I followed the HMM to the detail):4. When I replaced the LCD, I noticed that the original LCD had 2 black wires insulated at the ends originating from the bottom left area of the LCD that were not actually plugged into any area of the MB. I did the same on the replacement LCD and left them as it is. I don't even know what these are.5. I connected the other 3 wires(white, grey and black) and the main connector as the original LCD/HMM. 6. I uninstalled the display drivers and restarted and Win 7 automatically installed the drivers again.7. The Most important part - The original LCD when powered on, DID have backlight showing me the mangled area of the screen so I know it worked before replacement. I have read quite a ... Read more

Answer:T400 LCD screen black after replecement

It is possible you bought a faulty screen. You could reinstall the original screen to see if the backlight comes on. I am assuming you did not have the main battery installed when you disconnected or connected the screen. If you had a battery installed, it is easy to blow a fuse. If the new screen is and was bad when you got it, it could blow a fuse. Do you know if either or both screens have a, LED backlight? BTW, the 2 wires probably have a red end on one and a blue end on the other. They are for an optional WWAN card

Powering down and turn on again is not showing any screen picture. Opened it removed Bios battery, turned up after few on and off it starts it reset bios.So now there is picture and it goes on the next screen of windows instalation like normal, after installing devices and stuff it automatically restarts like usual BUT it has NO screen again, black screen, lights and sounds again show that its loading windows end instalation screen but no picture on the screen.Reset BIOS again, it starts normaly and this time it shows BSoD with code 0x7B, after BSOD Black screen again  Maybe its a BIOS setting?!? tried installing with drivers for AHCI and tried installing without drivers for Compatible , what else can it be? Updated the bios to latest version, same result. To say it again - it works fine with other windows, but XP must be installed

I have a T400 with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 graphics card.  The problem that I am experiencing is that recently the docking and undocking process has dramatically changed.  For the first three months that I had the T400 and the docking station, I would be able to dock the T400 with screen closed and immediately (e.g. 2-3 seconds) see the display transfer to the external Lenovo monitor.  Further, when I undocked the T400 (using the button on the docking station) and opened the T400 screen, it would immediately light up.  Recently (about 2-3 weeks ago) that process changed.  Now, when I undock the T400 from the docking station and open the screen, it won't light up.  The laptop continues to run (e.g. Bluetooth, Wifi, battery, and hard drive lights all still on and active).  But, the screen won't turn on.  I actually have to power down the T400 and restart to get the screen to display.  And, when I dock the laptop, it can take 10-20 seconds for the T400 to switch to display on the external monitor.  I am unable to tie this change to any driver updates or Windows updates.  But, it's always possible.  Any suggestions?

Answer:T400 black screen when undocking

I'm assuming the usual that you have checked on Lenovo for driver and BIOS updates etc and still no joy. Don't have experience with your problem on a T400, but it does sound just like the problems we had early on with Vista on the T61 (with an Nvidia graphics chip). One workaround to try on the undock/blackscreen is to close the lid again, let the machine go into Sleep (should only take a few seconds), then open the lid and see if your screen wakes up. Sucks to have to do that, but sure beats a complete reboot.  Other thing you probably have already done, but... if your system has switchable graphics go into the BIOS and set that to Discrete Only. Switchable graphics was a nice idea, but I think in the real world it has turned out to be a real headache. Good luck

I have an ASUS x750ja laptop running Windows 8.1.

The problem: From startup (including bios logo), the screen briefly displays what it should, then goes black. Bios logo, then black. If I enter the bios, it goes black at the first screen. It'll flash the Windows logo, then go black.

I've hooked it to a secondary monitor via HDMI. It seems like a hardware error, but whenever the monitor gets a signal to refresh, it flickers back on. For example, when I have it hooked to the external display, and configure it to extend the display, the laptop screen turns on for a second.

Furthermore, the brightness keys still function.

Don't know what OS you are working with but in general, if you can get into safe mode, a system restore to just before you changed the refresh rate should return it to the previous setting.

Hi & hope someone can give some guidance.I have a T400, Win7Pro 32bit that has been acting strange. It is a problem that I sent it back for right after I got it, but now am out of warranty. While using it (not at start up, usually has been running for a while), the screen will flash, then go completely black for a moment, then return to its previous state. Last night it happened while I was on the webcam, and I never lost audio only video. The computer does not give any indication that it is going to sleep. The previous times it has happened (all in the last three months), I did not lose anything I was working on.I know this is terrible, but I am not sure which display this is. Answer:T400: Sometimes Black Screen after standby (win64 x64)

My new T400 (Windows 7 64bit) does the same thing.  I found that if I manually put the machine in sleep mode after attempting to wake it up from standy by, then wake it up from the sleep mode, the normal screen returns.  It's not a fix but until a solution is found, it might save you a little time from rebooting.

Hello, my Ideapad 710S Plus-13IKB does not power on anymore. There is no noise and just a black screen. The keyboard also does not light up.Yesterday evening I have just shut down my laptop regularly. Today it is not working anymore. Since my laptop model does not allow to remove the battery, this is not an option for me as several support articles say. When plugging in the power supply, the small LED light at the side of the laptop lights up. But besides of that, nothing happens. The Novo button also does not work. Model Name: 80W3CPU: Intel i7-7500U 2.7GRAM: 8 GBSSD: 256 GBDisplay 13.3" FHDBattery: 4 cellOS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit Thanks for your help.

I am using Windows Home Basic with Service pack 1 & 2 installed. When I click on the help & support in the menu, and anywhere else, I get: 'Help & Support was unable to start' Any ideas please, thank you

Answer:Solved: Help & Support was unable to start (Vista Home Basic)

Perhaps the System File Checker can fix that.

IMO you get results as good and usually better by doing a web search rather than bothering with Help & Support.

I received the following error message when I attempted to restart my computer:

C0000218 Unknown Hard Error

When I restarted after the blue screen it went into a check disk but would not finish the scan.

I have tried to start the computer in safe mode with internet connection and after a few minutes the screen goes black. I've tried to start it using last known configuration and the screen goes black. Everything I try ~ the screen goes black.

Answer:Blue screen & now won't start in safe mode, screen goes black

I'm writing from my husband's laptop because my desktop is completely dead.

We were out of town for several days and when we returned my desktop was running very slow so I attempted to restart it. It locked up, I pressed/held the power button and when it restarted it attempted to run a disk check. The disk check locked up and I had to press/hold the power button again. When it restarted I got a blue screen ~ stop: C0000218 unknown hard error.

Sometimes when I attempt to restart it I get: checking file system on C:
file system = NTFS

When I attempt to restart it in safe mode, safe mode with networking or starting in last known good configuration I get . . .

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ . . . (various items)

Now it won't start, not even in safe mode. Everything I try ~ I just get a black screen.

** I just tried to restart AGAIN and it ran disk scan, said it had completed disk scan and would restart, the screen went black when it attempted to restart and the screen is still black and it won't restart.

What can I do to get my computer back?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm sure some of you have heard of this problem before (at least I hope!) I've been leaving my T400 on 24/7 for the past month. Last night it restarted on its own because Windows decided it wanted to help me install some updates. This might be the cause of my problem, but I'm sure. Anyways, read on. I was using my T400 at around 7pm tonight and when I browsed to the networked computers, Vista froze - first everything but the cursor, and when I got pissed and pressed the mouse a few times, the cursor froze as well. Powered the machine off. Powered it on again, and found it spent a long time on the green ribbon booting up Vista - must've been about 2-3 minutes. Then, I got to the black screen with a movable cursor. Ctrl+Alt+Del did nothing, I tried to get sticky keys open (read forums) but the sticky keys diaglog box would not show up. Powered off again. Tried to boot into safe mode, and it halts after loading crcdisk.sys for around a minute, then loads the same black screen with the movable cursor. I tried both Safe Mode, and Safe mode with networking. I have NOT tried "Last good configuration" because I'm not able to get to the Advanced Boot menu even after F8-ing - it would only give me the normal boot menu I downloaded the Vista Recovery CD (~120mb) from another computer and booted it onto my T400, and selected "Repair my Computer". Vista found no errors, and I had no previous system restore points or system backups to restore from. I deleted sptd.s... Read more

I really baby my  2-3 year old T400.  If it's on and I'm away for a few hours, the screen would go black and freeze.  A few times CNTL+ALT+DEL would bring it back, but then the next time a reboot was necessary.  During startup some screens would remain black and others would flash past.  At the end, the homepage would be black.  Finally, I noticed a faint buzzing sound coming from the right hinge area.  Getting closer to listen, I could smell an electrical smell.  Not good. I took the laptop to a friend with a monitor and there it worked fine (laptop screen still black).  So the screen connection appears to be shorted.  It's not in warrantee. I'd give details about configuration, but can't...high end of performation. Advice please: 1.  Repair the screen connection?2.  Can I buy a used T400 on ebay and literally replace the guts with my machine's?  If so, what would need to be replaced to make the ebay machine turn on and be exactly like my machine?I'm thinking it'sw easier to do this than the screen connection repair.3.  I could probably get by with a cheap monitor, but I'm afraid the thing would catch fire!! Any other suggestions? Thanks,Rich

Hi All,

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.... when it's staring up I get the normal windows screen with the animated icon.....then it goes into a black screen and I have to wait for my logon screen to load....about 10-15 seconds!

I enter my user name and password and it logs on, again slow about 10-15 seconds (like something is loading) the screen goes black then it's goes to its normal win7 background, then my icons load.....then they all refresh! Any ideas?

I've been through all the Microsoft tech-net forums and found nothing... It seems to be some sort of service loading up with a delayed start? Or I notice my network icon takes a while to load...i.e. the circle is going round over the internet access screen (icon) bottom right hand side of the screen! is this an issue with ip version 6?

Anyway any help...I would be grateful

I've tried updating my drivers..and all is ok....I've tried various registry tweaks...nothing.... I've installed and uninstalled my drivers...nothing

I have a HP pavilion DV7T Quad edition. Went from Windows 7 to Windows 10. When ever i boot the computer eveything works fine but after a few minutes on the home screen everything goes black just leaving a mouse cursor but I am able to access task manager. Its almost like the video drivers crash on the laptop. Right now i am able to bring up the chrome browser but again everything behind it is black. If anyone has any suggestions please reply.

Answer:Why does my screen go black on the home screen after a few minutes?

If you can get to a browser check HP support for updated drivers including Chipset and graphics. BIOS update would not be out of line either.
Hopefully you can run them from the support page.

A friend of mine asked me to look at his old XP machine because it simply will not fully startup. It does make it through the initial boot routine and the "Windows XP" splash screen appears but, shortly after that, the screen goes black. All you can see is a black screen with a white cursor in the middle of it. The system does not respond to mouse or keyboard input.

I used a Hiren's Boot CD boot disk to look around his system. He has about 40% free space left on the hard drive which seems to function correctly. I am presently running a virus scan (via the Hiren's Boot CD).

I've never seen an XP machine do this so I'm not sure what is going on. I believe he is running SP3 but I'm not certain of this because I can get it fully loaded to check.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,Maybe somebody can help me with this. Today when I turned on my T400 the LDC screen went black after starting windows. I can see the booting messages but when starts loading windows 7 (displays the windows logo) the LDC screen in the laptop goes black. If I connect a external monitor directly to the laptop, LDC starts displaying.Even if the monitor the monitor does not have any display the LDC is working. If I change the settings to display in boths. Both screens work. I made all possible combinations and everytime if I disconnecte the external monitor the screen goes black.I used a dock station and it does not work. LDC and monitor (connected to dock station) were black. If I connect the monitor directly to the laptop the dock station and the LDC worked fine. So display in dock station and LDC only work is an external monitor is directly connected to the laptop. Any idea why this is happening or have a similar problem?Thank you,Rob

After powering back on, the screen was lifeless -black like if the computer was off (no logo or anything -completely dead). Nothing was visible on the screen -There was no response from the hdd light either.I tried to press F1 to access Bios -I tried to press the blue Thinkvantage butten -no response. Then I tried to turn it off and on with the startup disk for Vista Business  -the CD/DVD drive sounded like it was trying to access the disc but after a while it gave up (the screen was lifeless all this time too)Itried leaving the computer off for about half an hour, but there is no change. I don't understand this -even if the hdd was unreadable I should at least be able to access Bios. Seems like the computer is totally dead. The only icons with light is the icon for the battery and the icon for power( I think that's what it is).I've already done this happened Zado all checks, trying to boot without ram, does not beep, no access to the bios.comment that when this happened I was using the ati card.Any suggestions?

Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with No Boot on your ThinkPad T400.
Are you able to see Lenovo logo after switching ON the system?
Have you checked with booting the system to safe mode option?
Boot the system to BIOS mode and check if Hard disk drive is detecting?
Please let us know the result after performing the steps.

Windows appears to load normally until reaching the logon screen at which point 2 quick cmd windows flash on the screen and i'm left with a cursor and a plain blue screen.

No access to task manager through ctrl+alt+del.

I was thinking it's a video card problem until i plugged in an external monitor and saw a windows error box pop up saying that the program running requires that you not be on battery power.

Pulled the drive and scanned with avast and malwarebytes which found nothing.

Inserted Vista DVD but the repair function is only able to find the HP Restore partition and is unable to locate any backups.

The system runs "mini XP" from Hirens Boot without a problem, but no diagnostics that i ran have been able to find any issues...

Recently I've discovered a small issue.

When I play FSX it changes the windows setting to windows basic.

When I quit the game sometimes I get a black screen with a white mouse for a few seconds & then it reloads back into windows areo.

Any ideas on how to fix this its not a major issue, just hasn't happened before.

There's new graphics drivers out for my card so might update them.

If not successful your mother board may be damaged - nasty thought. There is also this site which may be relevant. you can get your PC going suggest you check Event Viewer. HP Compaq Pressario laptop
4 years old
32 bit op system
3 Gig Ram
Vista Home Basic
Service pack 1
My problems started when RegCure Pro gave me a link to an uninstall tool to remove all traces of the program because of an issue I had with it. I used the same program to uninstall something else (can't remember what - 6 weeks ago now) Then I was tidying up and noticed I had two Google Chrome shortcuts on my desktop. I dragged one of them over to the trash then a few seconds later watched in horror as all the shortcuts on my desktop vanished one by one till there was nothing left!
All my files, photos, icons - everything gone. Luckily I always log on as a user so despite losing everything I was able at least to log on as administrator but then it started to freeze every day and I could do nothing but cold boot, then eventually had to use system recovery and reformat to factory condition. Now it freezes soon after start up and I have to cold boot then system restore anything up to four times before I can get it going.
The only other thing I have noticed is that when I'm on a site innocently playing scrabble for instance, my browser has been hijacked and referred me to a sales site.
I have kept a very tidy house on this machine in the 4 years I've had it and it has typically 113GB free of 138.
Any ideas on how I can save it?

I really like this theme Windows 7 Basic Black, have used it for years.

I have no use for distracting Aero effects, but due to technical reasons, there is heavy screen tearing with some intel GPUs.

It is explained here.

Basically what prevents screen tearing is called "DWM, Desktop Window Manager", which is only active in Aero.

My question is, whether there exist some really "Basic Black" looking Aero theme, or hack to have this DWM enabled also in non-Aero theme?

Have had the Spectre X 360 since the beginning of June this year. Middle of August the screen stopped working on power up. Tried a hard restart a number of times, but still nothing. Recharged the battery for 12 hours to make sure the battery was full. I got on the forums and found that this issue is a known problem. I managed to dig through the support pages enough to get to an online chat option. Went through some minor procedures in the online chat session, and it was determined I needed to send the laptop in for warranty repair. Got the box and packaging materials in the mail within 2 days. Put the computer in the mail on 8/24, HP receives the laptop on 8/26. From the beginng they have shown a estimated delivery date back to me of 9/02/2016.  You go to the current status of the order and it says on hold. They have a disclaimer at the bottom of the page that says different issues can delay repairs and that you will be notified for such a delay? Does 5 days past the estimated delivery not qualify as a delay?  The most frustrating parts about this whole process is how the support website is set up to make it impossible to contact a human being, and how little communication has been relayed about the status of the repair. Hence the reason for my rant. A hopeful cry that someone that happens to work at HP might have some helpful information about what is going on with my laptop?

Hi. I've recently just reinstalled Windows on my PC due to a trojan infection (it was highly recommended by someone over at the Virus/Spyware section to do so) and now I've got a problem - this process called 'runonce' is preventing my desktop from loading.

What happens is that once I enter my password to log onto my Windows user account, it shows a black screen and a cursor. I've tried waiting for 30 mins and it remains the same - my desktop only loads when I manually end the 'runonce' process from Task Manager.

Now I've read that runonce is a windows process, so I doubt it's harmful, but what is going on? Why isn't my desktop loading automatically?

I've attached a screenshot of my task manager at startup. Hope it helps.

Answer:Runonce process at startup gives black screen

If you have the 'Gigabyte Dynamic Energy Saver application' installed try uninstalling it. Any change ?

If no change download and run the stand alone version :- Control Panel/StartupCPL.shtml.htm

Look for 'runonce.exe' under all of the tabs, there could be 2 entries, untick them then restart the computer and see if the problem has gone.

First post, but I have tried to uninstall video drivers, system restore, random registry fixes, and so forth. I also did a virus scan, showing 17 Trojans (I know, very bad). I am guessing that is how this happened, not sure though. Uninstalling the video drivers helps, until I need to restart it due to new software. Then I can sometimes get to the log in screen, but even after that, It just goes black after a few seconds. I have searched and searched all over, and have not found a fix. Any help?

And can you try to boot into safemode and disable the video card drivers on the system from Device Manager and then restart the system and check.

Hello I hope someone can help me out with my problem.

About the problem.
Yesterday I did a shutdown from the start menu and turned off my monitors, however the computer did not shutdown and was still on after 10 minutes so I just turned it off with the power button.
Today I started my computer it boots I get the usual loading bar and then a black screen and not my welcome screen.

So I have tried the following to fix it:
I tried booting with last known configurations, and got the same problem.
I tried booting in safe mode, it loads for about 5 minutes and then just stops loading.
I tested the memory with a memory test from Acer, no problems found.
I tried booting with a lower resolution, get the same problem.
Just to see if its not a hardware problem, I have booted a linux live cd and that worked.
I have an acer recovery menu but it wont let me recover to a previous point.
And I don't have a vista CD or recovery disk.
I think it was updating when I shut it down..

So i hope anyone has a solution for my problem, if you need more information please ask and I'll answer.

Many thanks for reading and maby even replying to my problem.

Somehow after waiting an hour doing nothing then rebooting into safemode worked!
There i could do a system restore and problem is solved!

Answer:Vista boots to black screen instead of login screen

See if there is information on that PC on making recovery disks. I just used 2 dual layer DVD's to make recovery disks for a Compaq laptop.

Also, next time your machine boots to a completely black screen....let it stay there while it re-configures it's self. Don't be so impatient

I am posting on behalf of my friend because he cannot get on but he has a cracked versions of ms office 07 and his dad accidently installed the office genuine advantage and Office SP1 and now this has happened. We have tried booting in safe mode, booting off the windows vista disk and restoring the bios back to system defaults but neither of these have worked. He has Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 and his computer is an ACER Aspire.

I will be updating him with any information posted.

All help is highly appreciated.

Answer:Windows Vista loading screen then screen goes black

Looks like WGA got another one.
I think a format is in order.

As a side note dont put the cracked software back on.
Cheaters never prosper.
