P70 keyboard trackpoint issues

Question: P70 keyboard trackpoint issues

I've got my P70 recently, and everything works well except I have 2 issues with the keyboard and trackpoint working together: 1) Holding down Fn keys with left click and drag of the trackpoint does not work: this is incredibly frustrating, for example pan, rotate, and zoom in autodesk inventor are bound to F2-F4 keys with left mouse click 2) There is about a 1-2 second lockout period for the trackpoint left click button after any keyboard button press. For example when trying to edit a bunch of lines in code, typing and moving to a new location does not work, because you have to keep left clicking untill the lockout expires. Both of these issues make the machine essentially unusable in any professional software, either CAD or software development. None of these issues show up if I plugin the old usb thinkpad travel keyboard that also has a trackpoint in it, so this must be either a hardware or a driver bug in the P70 itself. Anybody else expririncing this issue or know a solution to this? Or perhaps I just got some bad hardware?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear Dell community,
the E7440/E7420 (and I think many others) has keyboards with (e.g. 04W6PV 08PP00) or without trackpoint (e.g. . RXKD2 0RXKD2)
Subsequently the upper mousebuttons (A12AN5) can/should be removed (which is possible).
However, then I would need another keyboard trim covering the space where the upper mousebuttons have been.
I haven't found any different keyboard trim than 29FWC 029FWC (the one with a recess for the upper mouse buttons). I also didn't find a "filler" for the upper mouse buttons.
A trackpoint-less keyboard can be installed in a laptop with the upper mouse buttons still in place, but it's rather tight and the mouse buttons cannot be pushed properly any more, so should be disconnected.
How do I properly convert a trackpoint-enabled laptop to a trackpoint-less one?
kind regards

I currently have an X60 and have never had a single issue.  However I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse with no issue at, but that is the only way. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JT

Answer:X60 keyboard and trackpoint stopped working; only usb keyboard/mouse work

SOLVED!  I simply had to update the drivers in the device manager.  For some reason they were corrupt and it could not load them.  Simple fix, just took too much thought and digging to find solution.

I have always used an IBM lap with a trackpoint mouse (that small little nub above the "B" key).

I purchased a similar keyboard for my desktop (IBM part #84H8566) and have been relatively happy with it. Plugged into the back of the computer, it takes up both PS/2 ports (for the keyboard, itself, and the mouse).

My question is this: I want to keep using my keyboard, but I'd like to add an external trackball and mouse (probably a Microsoft Intellipoint or a Logitech). I particularly want the ability to have a scroll wheel.

Does anyone out there know if there is any way to add this trackball/mouse and avoid a software conflict as I go from trackpoint/keyboard to trackball/mouse?

And....if no one out there has an answer, do you have a tech support number at IBM I could call (with or without a $$$ tech charge). I've been all over IBM's site and I can't find a "non-subscription" one-time tech number to call.

Thanks much !!

Answer:R52 Trackpoint keys pad and keyboard work sometimes

It sounds like a flakey keyboard. If it is still in warranty Lenovo will send you one for free. If not they are not very expensive and they are easy to replace. If you want to tear it down you will need the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Answer:Keyboard and trackpoint stopped working

Sounds like you damaged a Windows system file or device driver.    I'd run SFC  /SCANNOW to check the system files.   You may need to boot in safe mode, off another drive or try attaching a different keyboard/mouse.  I'd also reinstall the drivers for the keyboard/mouse.  Message Edited by ctoys on 08-16-2008 06:16 PM

I have had my keyboard replaced twice on my x240. Both of the new keyboards had/have a different trackpoint from the original keyboard. It is set much lower between the surrounding keys, but more serious is my problem with the movements: I have to use much more strength to move the cursor around and sometimes (= several times per hour) it is like a bow: If I lift my tired finger from the trackpoint the cursor moves across the screen in the opposite direction like an arrow. The keyboard is definitely not the same as the original one, as the original red rubber knob doesn't fit on the new keyboard.Am i the one onewith this annoying problem?/Peter

I connect the IBM USB keyboard with TrackPoint (UltraNav) to my Lenovo W510 using Windows 7. How can I adjust the sensitivity of the external TrackPoint? In control panel > mouse settings, I can only adjust settings of the onboard TrackPoint. Is this a driver issue, or I did it wrong? I tried downloading different drivers but none allows me that. Current drivers I use: ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint v1.06 (tpusbkybdwtrackpoint_106.exe)ThinkPad USB Keyboard Hotkeys v2.0.1.3 (q5kyb07us13.exe)ThinkPad UltraNav Driver v15.1.19.0 (6hgy31ww.exe (64-bit)) Actually tried newer drivers but the results are the same. Thanks for any suggestion!

after installing the required Lenovo driver explained in the post above. I get this option in my mouse setting under control panel.

Do you see this specific option? (there is new 1.07 driver released, so try to install that and see whether give you the option of adjusting the usb kb's trackpoint sensitivity).

Question: Trackpoint Issues

Hi, Just recently my trackpoint in my T61 stopped responding after having a little water in my keyboard near the left function and shift keys.  Attempting to fix the problem, I went to the mouse settings to make sure it was enabled, however the Trackpoint section was grayed out and the enabled box was unchecked. I also checked the BIOS settings and both the Trackpoint and touch pad are set to automatic. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Ultranav driver and utility. Is there anything else I should do to fix the problem? The amount of water that got into the keyboard did not look like it was much and evaporated pretty quickly, so I am not sure if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the water being in the keyboard.  I also tried tried the Trackpoint with a Ubuntu Live CD, but it did not work in Ubuntu either. Thanks

Hello,Yesterday I flashed the latest Bios 2.54 update for my E530 running Win 8.1 64 Bit. But now the keyboard and trackpoint drivers wont install. When launching the device manager, the two devices are marked with orange triangles. The Ultra nav driver installs corectly and then asks me to reboot. After the reboot the device in device manager has code 10 "couldnt start - not sufficient systen resources to complete the API". For the keyboard it just says in device manager "unknown device" under keyboards. When clicking on it, it says that I should install the driver again. But this procedure fails each time I try. I can just use the system via a usb mouse (even for typing this text :/ ) What can I do? Hi,  I have two issues with my brand new S531 20B0-0006MS,  1; I cannot enable my trackpoint, the option under  Control panel\mouse\ think pad tab is greyed out.2; when i use the FN+space to activate the backlight on my keyboard it only OSD only shows a quick notification that the backlight is disabled. and the backlight never turns on. I've updated all drivers using the Lenovo updater, done all available updates on windows update and done 2 factory restores wtithout success. I'm running an Win 7 pro system Do i have a hardware issue or am i missing something?

Answer:S531 Backlit keyboard and trackpoint issue

Hi Delvar, It's probably hardware related. If your laptop is under warranty, I would suggest to contact the support centre.Otherwise it's probably just a connector not seating properly on the keyboard. You could remove the keyboard, unplug it and replug it to check.Refer to the Hardware Maintenance Manual there: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/s531_hmm_en_0c11116_02.pdf Vince.

Hi.I have a fairly new Dell XPS 410 computer (if it matters), but I have an IBM Trackpoint 4 keyboard with PS/2 connectors that I have connected to my computer's USB through a PS/2 to USB adapter. I use the trackpoint instead of the mouse.I'm noticing that my cursor is frequently "running away" across the screen, much more so than the normal drift that's associated with the Trackpoint. When I look in Device Manager, The Keyboard is named "HID Keyboard Device" and uses Microsoft Driver 5.1.2600.2825, dated 7/1/2001.The Mouse is named "HID-compliant mouse" and used Microsoft Driver 5.1.2600.0, dated 7/1/2001.I've tried another IBM Trackpoint keyboard, and it still happens, which leads me to believe I need a Trackpoint driver. Can someone please tell me where I can get the latest IBM driver for my keyboard, or if this is even the right solution? Thanks.

Here's the driver:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=YAST-3WGLKYHowever, you're connecting a PS2 port to a USB port, this driver may not work properly or even recognize that the keyboard is there.

My couple week old T400 is having some TrackPoint issues. The cursor doesn't jump, I've checked all my settings, and the touchpad is off. What is does do is when I navigate upwards, sometimes the cursor will slowly move downwards on the screen without me touching it, for at least 2 full seconds. It moves slowly, not quickly, sort of like the Trackpoint not resetting to its neutral position. Does anyone else have issues where the cursor using the trackpoint doesn't completely stop moving? Even sometimes when trying to navigate to click a point on the screen, the cursor will push itself downward, so I end up having to exert even more pressure to get it to move in the opposite direction I want to go. Sorry if this isn't a good explanation of my issue, it's a bit hard to explain. Again, the touchpad is off and the click feature for the TrackPoint is also off. Thanks in advance for any suggestions (hopefully solutions!)!Message Edited by song510 on 06-16-2009 09:40 AM

I own a late 2015 Thinkpad t450s. It was fine for a long time but since few months cursor is drifting most of the time and Trackpoint stops working for a few seconds to minutes on it's own. What I have done till now: * Backed up and re-installed older version of Windows. * Tested on safe mode * Cleaned Trackpoint from dusts etc. I also used mouse and not the trackpoint but it still does that. I cannot stand to this behaviour of  the cursor anymore. Any solutions/ideas?

I had recently done an update using ThinkVantage. It changed the behavior of my trackpoint (pressing the middle now doesnt scroll up and down). It does however put a small round picture and it seems to allow me to scroll on any direction EXCEPT in places where the location has a clickable link. This means that the scroll function of the trackpoing cannot be used in windows start menu, etc. The issue though is that when I try hit Fn+F8, then "manage settings" - it says "unable to connect to synaptics pointing driver..." etc. then it asks me if I "...want to uninstall the driver?" Also, in folder view, hitting the center button now drags the file instead of allowing me to scroll - which is an unexpected (i believe incorrect) behavior Is this supposed to happen? My laptop is the T410s, touchscreen.

I want to report several issues with TrackPoint. Basic InfoLaptop: X1 carbon 3rd genModel: 20BT-CTO1WWOS: Windows 10 Pro (upgraded from Win 7 Pro)TouchPad driver: Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver ver. 19.0.17.2  Issue 1: TrackPoint does not work with MS Office 2016 (except Word).Mid button + TrackPoint cannot scroll horizontally in Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. Scrolling vertically works well.Horizontal scroll works well with Word 2016, Notepad, Microsft Edge, Firefox, etc.Horizontal scroll works well in Excel 2016 with ThinkPad mouse (model: MORFGOO) with mouse suite. Issue 2: TrackPoint calibrates even in mid button + TrackPoint mode.If you tilt TrackPoint steadily for a few seconds, it calibrates and takes it as new zero position. This is a correct behavior. If you hold mid button and tilt TrackPoint steadily (i.e. scrolling), it should never calibrate. This is another correct behavior which was seen with my previous ThinkPad notepads. However, my X1c TrackPoint calibrates even when mid button is held. After 0.5~1 seconds, the scroll stops. When releasing, the mouse pointer moves automatically. This is annoying. Issue 3: Mouse pointer changes size when mid button is pressed. The same as this post.  I use TrackPoint a lot with Excel and the above issues lower efficiency.I hope there will be new Synaptics driver to resolve the issues. btw, I'm not sure which is the best way to report bugs, because there are tooooooo many Lenovo and ThinkP... Could someone from Lenovo let the forum know if it will be possible to replace the W540 Trackpad / Bezel / Keyboard assembly with the new one from the W541 which has integrated physical Trackpoint buttons.  This would make a very big difference to me and I suspect a lot of other W540 owners who use the Trackpoint. I am the current owner of 5 Thinkpads and have been a loyal customer since the 600 series. The increased pressure necessary to generate a less reliable click on the Trackpad has greatly exacerbated a problem with the top joint of my right thumb - I have had to retrain myself to use my left thumb to do all clcking.  The problem was nowhere near as bad on the old Trackpoint buttons - where I could use them with my right thumb for several hours with no symptoms, I can now manage only minutes.

Answer:Replace W540 Keyboard with W541 Trackpoint Buttons

Add me to the list of W540 that wish to have a real workstation with original IBM style trackpad WITH BUTTONS! Similarly, we need to somehow add an LED to indicate HD I/O's. Maybe integrate this into the new PROPER trackpad. Example: Right now I'm copying off my NAS, 2.5 gig of PDF files catalogued by Calibre. The transfer has been running over 2 hours and only 35% done, and I have NO IDEA if data is transferring when the screen blanks out.  Thankfully, Western Digital's external Passport drive has an LED that flashes with the I/O, and this is the ONLY indicator that tells me the NAS data flowing and being backed up to the USB drive. Crypting does slow the data. Now, I realize that what I'm doing is not the best - using my WiFi connect for the transfer and USB 3.0 -, which is slow on this 'marketing promoted' Workstation. Hopefully I stuck it in the right port, as none are color blue identified, left front. ....  I'm blue <g>.

I suspect the Thinkpad W540 can not accept the current driver from the Lenovo support site (tp_compact_keyboard_1491.exe) as the version of the HID driver remains 6.17602.27514 and is a 2006 Microsoft driver). What is worse is, attempting to type on it in any normal speed for a touch typist results in bad keystroke recognition and has the window lose focus, selecting menu items, or the most annoying, selecting previously typed data that gets deleted as soon as you type the next character. It has happened 3 times just typing this note. I can't find a way to disable the driver associated with the keyboard on the Thinkpad (uninstalling it doesn't work) and I'm assuming with two drivers installed, they collide somehow causing the bad interpretation.  Or, the USB ports on the W540 aren't compabile with the keyboard.  I doubt the latter as I had problems with a Bluetooth version of the same keyboard. Lenovo doesn't appear to recognize its own keyboard based on 03X8715 fru but sometimes finds references to KU-1255 model when searching for drivers.  I've opened 2 tickets with Lenovo but all they do is delete the drivers and reboot to get them to reinstall.  I think these keyboards are not compatible with the W540 (though sailes said they were), and until a better driver is developed they are useless. Because the W540 rearranged the Thinkpad keyboard puttng the PrtScr at the bottom and the delete key where the insert key was... Long story short, someone spilled liquid on my keyboard. I took it apart, removed the keyboard, soaked it in a water (with a tiny bit of hand soap) solution to clean it. Let it dry for 5 days. Reinstalled the keyboard and neither the keyboard or trackpoint work at all. The funny thing is the trackpad below the keyboard doesn't work either, yet I never removed it because it is a seperate entity and is not even connected to the keyboard so I have no idea why that would not work either. I have looked all around the motherboard for any signs of the liquid on it and its clean as a whistle so I am confused why at the very least the trackpad does not work. A usb keybard and mouse work fine, and when I am in windows and I removed the HID compliant keyboard and re-scan it finds the HID compliant keyboard again so it knows its there. What else can I try?

I took picture of it showing what exactly was broken.   Notice that the black plastic part got separated from the base metal plate causing the middle button stopped to work.I just want to share it because it might be a quality issue. I contacted local Lenovo service and got a new keyboard replacement. Unfortunately it is different (compatible) part number. The new keyboard 45N2219 has much more soft feel than the old one 45N2149

Hello,  I just got this TP Yoga and have had some issues with it right away.  First, the trackpoint is not working.  Second, my bluetooth mouse is very laggy.  Basically, everytime I leave it for a few seconds I need to double click or move it for abotu 2-3 seconds before it starts working again.  These things combined make this very annoying to work on.  What I have done: restarted the computer, reinstalled windows, updated to the latest drivers on the lenovo website, then called tech support.  My option now is to send it back and lose my computer for 10 days.   Anyone else have any suggestions?   Thank you all!

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

Hi,I have a problem with my X200 tablet under vista: After a hangup the fingerprint, keyboard and trackpoint does not work. After login with external mouse and keyboard I did not find any mistake. Can anybody help? And another question:I want to change to Win7 because Vista ist bulls.... on this system. Is it possible to get an preload harddisk with Win7 and all Lenovo tools?Or a DVD for installation? Thanx

Answer:X200 tablet vista problem Keyboard, Trackpoint, Fingertip

It's not that great under Windows 7 either.... I've tried 7, vista and XP. So far windows xp is the least of the 3 evils. For windows 7 if you really want it (& if you don't mind that some of the hotkeys don't work under Windows 7 - installing extra drivers won't help this) you need the specifics from lenovo as to which installation cd you need to order from microsoft for normal X200 tablet function (I believe they charged about $40 dollars  Canadian for it)  in addition to a windows 7 OS code/key (around $90 dollars - not sure what that converts to in Switzerland, if you're a student).Hope that helps  Btw, what do you mean by hangup?

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Hi, I have been having some problems for a long time now and it is just getting on my nerves. I have a thinkpad L530  (model 2481-2SG) and in summary, the problems are: 1) Trackpoint and touchpad software seems to fail permanently after waking up from hibernation/sleep (tick boxes on the mouse configuration menu are also greyed out) and so, trackpoint cursor sensitivity is lost. 2) Sometimes trackpoint and touchpad do not work at all and if i get unlucky, keyboard may not work either, so I have to hard-reset. 3) I have 7 unknown devices in my device manager window and I have tried looking for their drivers for months without no avail (lenovo.com, lenovo update, searching on forums...)A snapshot of my screen: http://oi43.tinypic.com/dxo2hg.jpg I have tried to solve my problems updating all my drivers (both through lenovo.com and lenovo update), resetting all the configurations, default bios... Besides this sleeping problem, computer works just fine, smoothly and fast. I am just afraid of sleeping/hibernating my computer cause keyboard and trackpoint may not work after waking up... and I hate to do a hard-reset. Also, I have windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, BIOS 2.52, 4G RAM Thank you in advance for your time, because I do not know what else to do and these problems are driving me crazy.

Okay so i've been struggling to find a fix to this and Lenovo support hasn't really been too useful either. Basically the trackpoint is having issues working even with the newest bios, etc. and synaptics driver. It also is having problems with the old driver too?? Could it be in conflict with the new bios update? Lenovo Support gave me the advice to reformatte as it is a "software" issue and to repeat the same above process. Yet the problem still persists.  What steps should I try next?  Lenovo support seems reluctant to give me a hardware exchange Thanks in advance, any advice is open to testing! I'm just fed up with new drivers having bugs like this.

Firstly I'll explain the freezing issue (this is now the 3rd time I've typed this, as the first two times my laptop froze before I finished!)I run my laptop with the battery at 100% and plugged in and that's fine; as is running it on battery. The problem arises when my battery is low and I plug it into recharge. Soon after it's running on a/c the screen will go black and only way to shut down is by holding the power button. If I try to restart it too soon, the indicator lights next to the power button will illuminate, but the screen will stay black. Usually after 5-10 minutes it'll boot to the IBM screen & boot the rest of the way, but not too long into normal operation it'll go black again (sometimes hitting ctrl/alt/del will bring the screen back but it would be very distorted (pixilized) and would go black again and reboot. What could be causing these problems while recharging the battery? I've tried this with a couple different batteries (both OEM IBM) and it does it with both.  Secondly, both left and right "mouse" buttons are now nonfunctional (though the middle button of the track points works.) I have the latest version of Ultranav Wizard and all the buttons are enabled. The touch pad and trackpoint ball work fine, just the 2 left and 2 right buttons do not. What could be the culprit for this issue? Luckily I have a usb mouse so that's what I'm using for the time being.Message Edited by GoalieFergy53 on 02-14-2009 02:30 PM

I have an X60 Tablet PC. Trackpoint scrolling works fine in programs running directly on the computer. When I log in through Windows RDP and run a program on one of our servers, the trackpoint scrolling feature does not work. I am able to use the scrolling feature on an old Fujitsu tablet PC on server based programs. I have downloaded the latest driver and checked all the settings but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks,John

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

I spilled something on the internal keyboard of my R61i, and reinstalled a new keyboard today.  The keyboard works fine; the trackpoint is not working, and doesn't show up on the device manager either.  When the keyboard broke, I uninstalled the keyboard and the mouse in device manager because keys were stuck and I couldn't use an external keyboard/mouse effectively without uninstalling the faulty internal ones.  When I installed the new keyboard today, the keyboard automatically started working when I turned the computer back on and shows up in device manager and is working fine; the trackpoint, not so much.  How do I reinstall the trackpoint if the computer isn't recognizing it?  is this possibly a software program, or is the new keyboard mouse faulty?  any suggestions?  have restarted multiple times and scanned for hardware; I have also tried downloading things that look like they might be the right drivers, but I'm not sure how to reinstall the trackpoint if windows doesn't see it.

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Hi, I have vista on my laptop and installed Norton a while back. I got a notice saying upgrade, when i did this my battery ran out mid installation and then Norton wasn't on my laptop so i went on to live chat on their website. They remote accessed my laptop and reinstalled norton, since all of my settings have changed. Main issues: My keyboard keys are wrong, i.e. the 2 should be speech marks but is @, the pound sign is #. I can change back to how it should be by pressing shift and alt but it soon changes back. My task bar at the bottom should have the volume icon, this is gone. When i try to customise my settings it does not allow me to change anything. My start bar is missing the normal icons and when i try to customise i click on apply and nothing happens. Norton have been no help at all even though i am 100% sure they have caused these problems. They keep referring me to microsoft saying basically it's not their problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Various issues: keyboard settings, toolbar/ start menu issues.

In my opinion... Norton = Problems. There is a lot of other free anti virus software out there, just as good, if not better than Norton.

I have some problems with my keyboard. I know that this not an issue with the keyboard, since I have tried two keyboards. One wired, one wireless. Anyway, the problems are that sometimes keys take 5-10 seconds to respond, keys sometimes hang, and that keys sometimes completely stop responding. Remember, all 3 of these problems occur no matter which I try to use. The two keyboards I have tried are the SteelSeries Apex (Wired) and the Logitech K520 (Wireless). More details about keyboards (probably unnecessary):
Apex:
-Customizable color options, also has effects that fade into different colors
-4 profiles with keys to switch (acts like different keyboardsno changes to USB hub)
-2 USB 2.0 Ports
-Takes 2 USB slots
-SteelSeries logo button between right ALT and document (correct word) button
K520:
-Battery Indicator
-Meh, other than that, just an average keyboard with a number pad
EDIT: Ran sfc /scannow, no problems.

Hi everyone.

I have been experiencing serious keyboard issues since Friday on my dell inspiron 1420 laptop.

Goes like this:

Only the keys 5 and 6 work in the numbers row
windows button does not work
Most of the time i can type with my all my letters, but sometimes, pressing letters such as D, E, W executes the windows shortcuts automatically.
For instance, usually to head back to my desktop I use "windows button + D" - with my current problem sometimes only pressing on D will activate that shortcut - and this goes for all windows shortcuts basically making it impossible for me to use my keyboard.

Then sometimes my whole system is going haywire i.e volumes going up and down for no reason, windows that are closing and opening, pages refreshing, exporer opening up for no reason etc. - as if there was a faulty electronics problem randomly activating those buttons.

I have tried to load my system in safe mode but the problem still remains.
I have also just re-installed windows 7 and the problem still remains.

I am almost sure this is a hardware problem - faulty electronics regarding keyboard control

I dont think this is a virus or a malaware issue because re-installing windows did not help.

On another note, while cheking theweb for solution, it has been brought to my attention that other people have this problem (number keys not working except the 5 and 6 ones) and I have yet to find a solution or an explination.

Can anyone help me out?

Answer:Serious keyboard issues - keyboard has a mind of its own

Have you tried plugging in an external USB keyboard to see if it exhibits the same problem?

If it turns out to be the keyboard, they are available on Ebay and fairly cheap to buy. They aren't difficult to install, usually just a couple of screws.

Here's an example of one on Ebay: New-Keyboard-Dell-Inspiron-1420

Question: Keyboard Issues

Hi,
I have got an old laptop that had loads of viruses on it. I formatted the hard drive and installed windows xp. The computer ran windows ok. Since then I have only installed BitDefender and ZoneAlarm. The computer has been connected to the internet only to try to register these two programs.

Now, when the computer is turned on, programs run and load at a normal speed, but the keyboard does not respond unless you hold the keys down for around 3-6 seconds. From task manager less than 30% of the available memory is being used. What can I do to solve this?
Thanks
Phil

Have you tried another keyboard just to rule out a faulty keyboard?

Have you installed any motherboard driver it may need? (depends which keyboard it is)

This is shareware, but you can run it to test if all your keys work fine, or if one of the keys is stuck: http://softempire.com/keyboardtest.html

Question: keyboard issues

This problem is happening on two different laptops, both Windows 7, so I'm wondering if it's a virus. On many occasions, but not every time, my cursor will jump to another spot in the text and continue typing in the middle of another word. It seems to happen when a word ends in "t". It's becoming extremely annoying and I'd love to get it fixed. I have searched for this problem, but have not found anything about it. Help would be much appreciated.

Been having the same problem.

It is very annoying and happens when I am typing a bit faster. I have to check all my mails very thoroughly.

I was going to check the speed but have only got round to looking at the problem now.

Any help will be appreciated.

With the help of your excellent pages on Keyboards (KBs) I have been finding my way around a new Caseflex Bluetooth  KB  configured for my Android tablet (my Windows 10 SSD is broken). However, I am having trouble with selecting a few keys, in particular the pound Sterling symbol and the Euro. The keys they are on also have 3 and #; and 2 and @ respectively. Some of the keys are unfamiliar, partly because they are specifically for iOS but most are OK. It seems to be set up for UK English, eg.the @ and # keys are correct and not transposed with " and # as is the case with the US configuration. There are some of the Fn keys I have not yet found a use for.Can someone give me some pointers on how to deal with this, please?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.

down loaded microsofts mr fix it.

picked up the actual key and cleaned it.

checked my updates.

Turned on and off my firewall.

Please if someone could help, I am desperate to not have to pay any money for a new laptop if I can troubleshoot it myself.

I play a videogame called Spore, and there is an assymetry feature in the creator, it requires me to hold A. I want to know how to disable my computer freezing the mouse when keys are held down.

Answer:Keyboard issues

Welcome to Seven Forums
You can go to control panel >keyboard and adjust the speed of the delay, I don't see a place to disable it completely.
If I remember correctly in XP you would get a sticky key error and could make changes then but in Seven it looks as if you could adjust the speed in which it allows you to hold down a key, now I don't know how this is going to effect the rest of your game play but you might want to give it a try.

Perhaps someone else may have a better ideal

Every now and then I get keyboard typing problems on forums webpages, ie it is slow to show the letters or they are missed all together. Also I get IE 11 that is very slow to load, using a new tab is slow to load or I have a lot of freezing of pages or IE slow to or not responding messages. It is very frustrating. I have read things like maintenance issues are most likely ie start up clutter, ad ons or malware problems as well. So I have completed malware scans via malwarebytes software, also used win patrol to test what I have in these categories. I have even done a sfc/scannow command and it does say I have some register problems but they cant be repaired. It may be best to load some screen shots to explain better and to go thru these methodically so posters can help in the right way. Anyway cheers for any help in advance.
Theflea.
Edit; I will have to find the method to load pics first!! I did check threads on this but am getting conflicting ways to do it, so do need help on this.

Answer:IE 11 keyboard issues

You could upload them to Photobucket or any other photo sharing site and paste its URL here without the http/www.
But meanwhile, you could back up your bookmarks and reset IE.

My keyboard isn't working when I get to windows login screen. I have a password so I can't log on because I cant type it, so I cant log on to update drivers and ect. The keyboard works just fine as its booting, but when it gets to the login screen it doesnt work. I have a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, yet the mouse works when the keyboard doesnt.

I have tried putting the reciever in every usb there is on my computer and restarting and so on. But it doesnt help.

What can I do to fix this? Because I cant access my PC atm.

Thanks

Answer:Issues with keyboard

Get a USB Keyboard (hard wired) to the computer

You can also start in Safe Mode (repeatively press F8 key on Windows startup)
Then log into the Administrator account (hopefully no password on that)
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel
Select your normal User login account name
And remove the current password
Restart normally, and login (without a password now)

You can then test your keyboard with this program
Windows Keyboard Test : http://www.passmark.com/products/keytest.htm
(Note: you do not need to register the program)

I'm currently having issues with all of the keys at the top of my keyboard. All of them do not work properly, the audio buttons, the buttons for changing the brightness, etc. None of them are working properly and I have no idea how to fix it.  Hopefully you can help me. Thank you for your time.

When using my keyboard, you have to hold down the button for about a 3 seconds before it recognizes you hit it.. Also, you have to wait about a second before repeat keys are allowed...  I changed everything I could find in settings, etc. to speed up the second issue (0.3 seconds) but i would prefer to have the CPU working like it did when i bought it.

Hi jeffarm26 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would using another USB keyboard be different ?
Would you have same issue using a newly created user account (local admin) ?

You can try turning off the filter keys .
From Control Panel  > Ease of Access Center> Set up Filter keys then Uncheck box for Turn on Filter keys

Update us how things go.

Question: Keyboard issues

Can anyone help me with my keyboard?

I think it's a PS/2 issue, but don't think the port's dead. Every time I boot up into windows I have to go to device manager where there's an exclamation mark by the keyboard software - I unistall it, and then add new hardware, which is a bit of a hassle each time.

Also, not sure if this is related, but sometimes when I install programmes/ run scandisc, a blue screen comes up with something like 'USB bugcode error'. My USB devices seem to work fine though, and it's a PS/2 keyboard.

Thanks

A similar thing happens on my settup but it's the continual 'firing' on some games. Took me a while to figure out what it was. Happened to be the usb controller for my UPS. Disabled the control for the UPS and games run ok.Check what other hardware you have connected to your usb ports and remove one by one incase they affect gaming.

Question: Keyboard Issues

I have a strange issue, whereby sometimes my keyboard will not work in almost every app. Numlock, Capslock and the windows key work, but I cannot type any letters or numbers. The only app that works ok is Chrome. I have the latest Logitech drivers installed and the mouse works ok. The only way to get the keyboard to work again is to restart. Has anyone else experienced keyboard issues in Windows 10?

Question: 2 keyboard issues

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have recently disposed of 2 viruses that I aquired on my Pesario sr1807cL desktop.

These were the Zlob downloader and the Smitfraud viruses or variants of them. I used Mcafee, Super spyware remover, and a combination of others to help me remove them. Both with automatic and manually.
At some point my ps/2 keyboard that came with the computer quit. Originally it read code 39 in the device manager, and after clearing the upper and lower filters in the registry of extras (searched for all kbdclass) I rebooted and then the device manager read code 10 --This device cannot start --and still does. I have tried to date the driver, uninstall and reinstall etc. The keyboard works before windows boots, but after it will stop working and will cause the mose to freeze as well. In order to type I use the character map.
I also tried to install a new microsoft comfort curve2000 USB keyboard. The device manager shows that it is working properly but it does not work at all. I downloaded the software for it and updated and still nothing.

While trying to remove the virus we had help from friend who has helper in the past via remote assistant. He is good and trustworthy. It should be noted that when he tried to help with the keyboard issues that remote assistant would not work. In talking with him and some others it is felt that it is possible that the virus may still be lurking.

Question: Keyboard issues

Hi guys

New here and all, i thought you could help. i have an Acer Aspire five seven five zero which has started acting up after installing a game. My keyboard seems to be messed up. i tried the usual num lock problems, i even tried a system reboot but nothing is fixing it. Most of the letters work, im mainly having problems with the letter o, my FN key works for brightness and volume, but not on the F keys at the top. Most number keys type together for example when i press 8 it types 87, the number two is serving the function of ctrl F. The shift key is giving me all capital letters except for the letter i.

i am at a loss at what to do. i hope my explination is enough to go on its such a strange thing, its been hard typing all this out. i hope its a really simple fix.

Thanks for your time

Question: Keyboard Issues

This is an incredibly strange issue I have with my keyboard.  All the keys work just fine, it responds fine in Windows, however whenever I open some games (IE: Warhammer Online, Soldat), in-game the keybindings set won't work.  my keyboard is completely unresponsive to movement in-game.  I can type messages but besides that nothing.  The only keys that appear to work are left+right shift, left+right ctrl, left+right alt, esc, enter and f12.  When I try to change the bind of a key in-game, it shows the key set as "pause" for every single key except for the working ones.  I can successfully move my character using the WASD keys only when i hold down alt or any of the other working keys.  Any idea whats going on?  it's clearly not a driver issue but something is going on........

Hi guys. Need a little help

Okay at the office I have an "old" pc. It has 64mb graphics card 512mb ram and a pentium 4 processor, which translates into a good work horse (It was once a state of the art machine, one of the first pentium 4 to be sold I am sure). As it has been around for 5 years it is having a few problems, mainly software related. For instance access is corrupt...
I have tried the obvious path, deleted all unnecessary files, (30 gigs) created a new user profile, unistalled office, reinstalled office, cleaned regestary files, cleaned temp files and a bunch of other stuff. Sadly, while I have solved a lot of other problems, my initial problem persists in that access won't run our database which runs on other machines fine.
On Sat I thought, fine, lets just start a new, format and reinstall windows...
Okay now I hit problems, the ps ports for keyboard and mouse are faulty, which is why I have usb keyboard and mouse. But the usb stuff is not active till windows actually loads which means I can't actually can't run the windows boot programme as I cant even press a key to which will initiate the boot from cd command.

Any idea on how one can get around this.

Alternatively I have a lot of pc parts lying about. What is the possibility of taking all the parts to build a new pc. Basically how does one determine if a pentium four can run on a motherboard that currently has a celeron and what type of ram a motherboard uses.

Question: Keyboard Issues

Quite often my keyboard starts doing weird stuff. When I'm playing a game it usually start to mess up. The enter button starts to shift my game between windowed and full screen mode. None of the letter keys work. As well, the space turns into a right-click. Sometimes its followed by my left click on my mouse opening the properties of whatever I click on.

For a bit pressing the left and right shift+ctrl+alt worked, but now it doesn't and it happens more frequently.

It would be very helpful to us if you could clarify your statement: "It is like one of the action keys get stuck but it is not phyically stuck"

What exactly happens? Does this only occur in one game? Does it reoccur in non-game programs like Microsoft Word?

Question: Keyboard issues

I just recently purchased a new keyboard (Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000). It was working for awhile till yesterday whet key started not working properly, for instance when I pressed the 'c' key it would also type a 'z'. So I tried reinstalling the drivers and that just made it worse. The caps key kept relatively turning on and off. I decided to reinstall them again. This time none of the keys work, but it detects the keyboard; I have also tried using multiple USB ports with no success. I have not spilt anything on the keyboard; t is about 3 days old. Threes also no junk in between the keys. I used the Microsoft onscreen keyboard to type this out so Iím sorry if threes not that much information. I noticed when I press the caps lock on the onscreen keyboard it lights up on the keyboard. And yes I did uninstall the previous keyboard drivers before I installed the new ones.

Thanks for any help in advance!

You should boot into Safe Mode (F8 while the HP logo is displayed to get the menu) and check the keyboards in Notepad. If they are fine in Safe Mode, its a software problem. Usually, if they are not, its hardware.

HiI'm having trouble signing onto my computer.  My keyboard is wireless but it stop working, so I bought a wired keyboard hoping I could plug it in and enter my password.  Unfortunately, no such luck.  I thought the keyboard was working but when I plug it into my labtop in installed its drivers.  So I guess I need to get pass my login screen for it to work on my desktop.  I can't use my keyboard, is there any other options that I can use to sign onto my desktop.  If I was to purchase a docking station would that allow me to plug my cpu into my labtop and sign on that way.  I don't know, I grasping at straws.  Someone please help me if you can. Thanks, Hattie

Windows got built in drivers any wired keyboard should be able to use without installing anything.I presume this is a USB keyboard? Did it come with a USB to PS/2 adapter? If it did, plug it in to the PS/2 port. I using an older motherboard, (aopen mk77m II) that has two ps/2 ports available for mouse and keyboard connections. Recently, my keyboard fried and I made an emergency run to the local walmart to pick up a cheapo. The problem I had was there were no ps/2 keyboards available, (they thought I was asking about a "playstation 2" :-D) so I grabbed a USB keyboard along with a USB extender (USB man w/4 additional USB connections).

I have a USB Hub connected to my motherboard which gives me 4 extra USB ports, most of which were already being used by my printer, MP3 players, and other devices. So, I used one of the hubs USB ports to connect the "Hub Man" and then plugged my new USB keyboard into that....daisy-chained!

Everything worked fine for a day but then when I was playing around in windows, (XP HE) the keyboard Numbers Lock light went out and I lost keyboard control. I got out of windows and rebooted, went into bios and found under peripherals, "Support USB Keyboard", for which I assumed just meant support BEFORE windows loaded. Anyway, I checked "support it", saved and exited, allowed windows to load and watched as the keyboard lights lit up...with numbers lock working correctly.

Then, I got home today and was at the log in screen for windows. I have my account password protected and tried to type in my password but no response. I noticed the numbers lock light was out again so I shut windows down and rebooted. After BIOS d... Read more

Answer:USB Keyboard Issues

I tried to connect a USB hub directly into the port on the back of the box but then everything went haywire on me, even my DSL modem quit working and the wizard popped up and wanted to install it again. So, I connected everything back one device at a time, while watching the device manager, and now it's all being recognized. :confused

Here's the steps I took:
Plugged my DSL modem back into the port from whence it came. The Device Manager recognized it, USB activity light came back on and as you can see...it's working.
Plugged the USB hub back into the other USB port. Windows did not recognize this, so since it has it's own power source, I unplugged it and disconnected the USB connector at the hub. I waited about 30 seconds and then powered it up and plugged the USB connector back in...Bingo, Device manger now recognizes the "Generic Hub".
Then I plugged my USB printer cable into the hub and the Device Manager recognized that.
Now, for the problem child...my new keyboard. I plugged that into the hub and Bingo...the Device Manager recognized that as a composite device.

But this just puts things back to the original configuration where my problems started. I am going to pick up a backup ps/2 keyboard at the refurbished computer parts store for emergencies...they only cost about 5 bucks!

I know I stated in my previous post that I was going to use the 2 USB connections that were still located on my motherboard but, those need a special connector ... Read more

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61t which I have had for about a year now. A few days ago the keys " q o e i w r u" stopped working. At first the problem came and went but now it refuses to go away. That solution seems to be impossible this time around because the restore point has disappeared.  I have trouble believing it is strictly a hardware problem when it can be resolved by a system restore. Also, I am currently living in France and would be in serious trouble if I had to make do without the laptop for an extended period of time. Question: Keyboard Issues

Hi

I have a HP Touchsmart envy laptop that is having keyboard issues. When I'm typing after 5 or so keys in any program it will open up a new window displaying Bing "how to get help in Windows 10" or it will open up multiple windows displaying the same message. I then have click on the google chrome icon in my taskbar to bring it back to the desktop then pressed again to go back to where I was typing. It allows me to type another 5 or so letters if I'm lucky then it does the same thing all over again and it's becoming frustrating now. Also the backlight on my keyboard has stopped working. I did the free upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 when it first became available and have reinstalled Windows 10 thinking that it may fix the problem but it still persists. I am typing this message from my iPad as it's as frustrating as hell trying to type when it opens multiple Windows randomly. Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

I recently moved, and didn't take a mouse or keyboard with me, instead deciding I should get new ones when I get there (I'd been using the same generic MS keyboard and Razor Boomslang for many a year).

However, my old keyboard was PS/2, and this new one is USB. Windows is completely unresponsive to this keyboard, I'm assuming because it doesn't have drivers for it. But I can't install drivers, because without a keyboard, I can't type in my password to log in. Whoever came up with this idea at MS should be shot.

I know the keyboard works because I can use it to navigate BIOS, and even press F8 to *gasp* boot in Safe Mode. But as soon as the Windows logo pops up, the lights on the keyboard go out and it stops working.

I seem to recall having this problem once before at a LAN party, but I worked around it by using a USB to PS/2 adapter. However, this keyboard doesn't have one.

Anyone know what I can do to fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

Oh, and the OS is Windows XP SP2.

Answer:USB Keyboard Issues (Cannot Log In)

See if you can borrow a PS2 keyboard and get into your computers bios. See if there is a setting for legacy devices and enable this, if it isn't enabled already
