Plug in but not Charging after Winfow 10 upgrade - W540 (help needed)

Question: Plug in but not Charging after Winfow 10 upgrade - W540 (help needed)

Hi I got a Thinkpaf W540 in Nov 2014. It works fine until I upgarded to Window 10. My W540 now cannot have the battery chraged despite plug in. I ran the diagnoiis and it said the battery is fine. The only way I can get it charged is to remove the battery and put in again. Then, plug in the AC source and it will charge. However, as long as I log in to Window 10, it will stop charging. How can I resolve this problem? Many Thanks Eric

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lenovo Thinkpad W540 I get this message when I hover over the battery icon: "95% available (plugged in, not charging)". It seems to be staying at 95%. I have replaced the AC adapter, and taken the laptop in for servicing. Service thought it was a motherboard problem until I found an Airplane Mode solution. The problem is that the W540 requires more power that an airplane AC outlet will provide so the laptop turns off the AC adapter. This also shuts down the wi-fi adapter. We ran the Microsoft solution to deactivate the Airplane Mode in Windows 8.1 and this helped for a few months. Now the airplane mode is back and I can't delete it. I have tried putting the laptop into other power modes but it reverts to Airplane Mode. I can switch the wi-fi back on and switch Windows to other power modes but I still get the meaasge above and sooner or later the laptop will switch itself back to Airplane Mode.

I have recently purchased a W540 and a Thinkpad Ultra Dock 135W. Is there a reason why none of the USB ports on either the laptop or dock can charge an iPad 2? I have tried them all and only get the message "Not Charging" on the iPad. I believe it is a power output issue but have no idea why and would have expected at least one USB port to be able to charge? I have the dock connected to permanent 240V power as well?? Help!!!

Answer:W540 - USB Charging iPad Issue

The iPad needs 10 Watts USB to charge it. The laptop can't provide that much power through its USB. However even though it says it is not charging when connected to the laptop, it is actually charging it at a slower rate, called trickle charging. Leave it overnight and the battery meter will change.

Hi, just found a strange bug: If you disable WiFi on a W540, and the airplane power mode kicks in, the machine no longer recognize any chrging adapters, neither from the bundled adapter, or from the docking (135W).If you re-enable the High Performance power option, charging is working again. This bug is present on all the W540 machines I have tested on here at our site. Have reported it to the local Lenovo support center as well. All our machines have Windows 8.1 with all the latest drivers.

Answer:W540 charging bug - WiFi OFF = no charge

Airplane power mode means limiting the system to 65W of power from AC adapter, regardless of what AC adapter is actually attached.  This is to prevent overloading airplane circuit breaker.

W540 does not support 65W AC adapter - it's minimum power budget is around 100 Watts.  65W AC adapter can be used to charge W540 when it is sleep/hibernate/off, but 65W power adapter is essentially disabled while the system is turned on.

So this is the reason why airplane power mode causes W540 not to recognize any AC adapter, because airplane power mode limits AC adapter to 65W which W540 does not support.

The real question is why W540 ever enters airplane power mode which is not supported on this system due to power restriction.  So let me investigate this issue and get back to you later.

I was given a nextbook several months ago. I don't know how to tell details like what version it is. It says manufactured Sept. 2014, and has serial number.

I do have operating system details though. It was upgraded to Windows 10 shortly before I received it.
My issue: No matter where I plug it in, directly in an outlet, or into a power strip designed for a computer, in a heavy duty power cord, the square plug part (not the cable to nextbook) gets hot. Not just warm, hot. So I can never get the battery fully charged, because soon as it gets beyond slightly warm, I have to unplug it. Worried about overheating and fire. I've never had anything likethis before, but I don't think this is normal.
I've included 2 images of the cable/plug. Also image of system info.

Any suggestions what the issue is and what I can do for it? My Computer just quit on me, so I'm relying on my nextbook until I learn if computer can be fixed or if it's a goner.

Yesterday I encountered a problem. My Dell laptop not charging. But is showing in notification area charger plug in but not charging. I check my battery heath from bios. It's showing battery health normal. But adapter type showing as a unknown. I am confused If my adapter is going to dead, then why it is showing "plug in" in notification area.

Please help to resolved that.

Answer:My laptop is not charging but showing plug in.

Right.. Well there's only a few ways to test this, but both involve a kind friend or money lol.

The free way is to borrow someone elses power supply. As long as its 19v and about 3a it should be fine.
If it charges off that, its your psu, if it doesn't, its possibly battery.

The other method is to take the battery out and get a vault meter on the terminals on the laptop. 2 of these in some combination should kick out 19v DC. If it doesnt then an internal fault could be to blame.

The 3rd is to ignore the battery health meter (as at the end of the day as long as it has a charge its going to say its fine) and buy a new battery.

By accident I retrieved the power Jack around 2 mm from the socket of the pc, and charging has begun regularly! I tried several times and I noticed that the battery will only occur if before I insert completely the plug into the pc, and then pull it of about 2 mm. What can be wrong?

When playing games, the computer drains the battery and noticed that the battery is not charging based on the icon at the bottom right, after ignoring it, the 10% windows warning of low bat appeared and it keeps draining because it is not charging. During this scenario, my power adapter is plug-in with lit on. I dont really know what is wrong with the unit because, if you close the game itself, it can charge normally. Im guessing that it doesnt produce power to the battery while charging at a game play.
another thing, contacted chat support and got remote support, he was connected and he was in another session then waited for 20mins. without solving anything. just wasted my time for 20mins.
any thoughts or solutions that i could do it myself? thanks.

Answer:Alienware 17 R3 - not charging during game play even though it is plug

The power supply may not be putting out enough power to keep charging it while the computer is running games.  This shouldn't happen, how long has this been going on?  Is this a new computer?  Has it ever worked right?  You should contact Dell and let them know they need to do a swap of this power supply for you.

My wife?s Sony Vaio PGC-9U1M, bought in June 2005 has developed a worrying fault. The charging plug that goes into the socket on the back of the Sony has become a loose fit, so much so that it has required some skill to get it into the best charging position. I?d noticed the plug and lead were starting to feel warm, but tonight I sat over it for a couple of hours whilst it charged continuously up to about 80%, but was shocked when I pulled it out and it was very hot, soft, and contorted out of shape. It has got some white gluey stuff that has set on it that looks as though it may have come from the female laptop socket.I?m wondering now if the heat has caused the looseness rather than the other way round.Even if the charging worked, it can?t be used because of the potential fire hazard. I?m sure when I disconnected it the lead and plug were close to meltdown, and a short circuit could have been disastrous. The battery was mildly warm, so it doesn?t seem to be a case of self combusting battery here.Anyone able to explain what?s going on here? Similar experiences?I suppose I?d better get it repaired before we go up in smoke. I?m not expecting much interest from Sony, and I have no extra warranty on it.

Answer:Dangerously hot Sony laptop charging plug.

Get it looked at for your own safety as it should not be getting that hot A WARNING it is not right.

then what the main problem the AC adaptor or the battery ?
need to identify the problem then i will find some parts for replacement

Answer:Plug in , not charging Dell inspiron 15 5558

Does the system correctly identify the AC adapter or does it show unknown?  F2 at powerup to check.
If the adapter IS recognized, replace the battery.
If the adapter IS NOT recognized, and is a non- Dell adapter, replace it with a Dell adapter.  If it's a Dell adapter and it's not recognized, replace it with a new Dell adapter first.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack in the system:

If that doesn't solve the issue, replace the mainboard.

When I plug in for charging battery then screen goes black? when I set the  power plan at HP reccommended)But  I set the power plan at high performance then this one is OK.Please advise me to resolve

Answer:laptop screen goes black when plug in for charging battery

Did you mean to say that it goes black for a second and then returns to normal? Your notebook sounds like one with switchable graphics.  My HP product loan Envy17-3002ea does that because I have the graphics power options set to automatically switch to the energy saving GPU when on battery.  If you don't want that to happen, just take the tick mark out of the box that say automatically switch. Then it will stay in high powered GPU all of the time, but will always use more battery power when on battery. This is a decision that only you can make.    regards, erico

Recenty I install Windows 8 to my laptop (Dell Vostro 3300). But When I plug in the adapter, it just a few seconds to charge and back to  not charging anymore. even when I shutdown and plug in, it still wont charge.
I already try to uninstall the ACPI driver and unplug, restart and plug in again. in fact, I already try all options that show when I google it.
I try to switch with other batterie and adapter from my friend with same version of my laptop, but  still it wont charge. please help me to solved this. thank you.

Answer:Dell Vostro 3300 in Windows 8 Not Charging When Plug In

Hi BILLY_SHN,
Are you using an original Dell adapter? Is the adapter frayed? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay in firm or does it fall off easily? Is there any charge on the battery available?
If the battery charge is more than 10% - then update the BIOS - http://dell.to/28ORaZe
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

I usually use my Yoga 2 Pro with AC Adapter plugged in. I turn on Conversation mode in Lenovo Energy Manager and get a message of "Plug in - Not Charging" everytime the battery is already 60% charged. Does it mean that AC electricity will directly serve to run the laptop without going through the batttery like a desktop computer?
I'm worried this habit will ruin my battery lifetime.

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro - Does Plug in - Not Charging on Conversation Mode harm the battery?

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Yes, when the charge level reaches 60% and you receive that message it means the battery is no longer receiving a charge and the laptop is being powered by the AC adapter.

No, using conservation mode will actually extend the health of your battery which means the battery will have a longer life time.   It is the continually charging when the battery's charge level reaches 100% level that will shorten the life of the battery.

Question: W540 CPU Upgrade

I purchased a W540 and picked the lowest speed CPU but I discovered that this CPU doesn't support all virtualization extensions. From the W540 manual (section 1210 Microprocessor), it certainly looks like the processor can be replaced. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, is this something where the laptop has to be get sent back to the factory or can it be done "in the field" by a tech?

Answer:W540 CPU Upgrade

It certainly can be done in the field. It is not considered customer-replaceable, so doing it yourself may affect your warranty status. I have no direct experience related to the cost on that particular model, but in general, it is usually cheaper to find a buyer for your machine and buying a different one. You might be able to work out an exchange with a Lenovo dealer, but again, I have no experience doing that.

Answer:W540 windows upgrade from 7 to 8.1

Hello and welcome,

Your laptop may have been sold as "Windows 7 Professional 64 preinstalled through downgrade rights in Windows 8.1 Pro 64".  Often in that case Windows 8.1 install media is included.

You can try this to get 8.1 install media:  Create installation media for Windows 8.1

If that works you can then install ThinkVantage System Update and use it to install the appropriate Lenovo drivers and apps.  http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-w-series-laptops/thinkpad-w54...

I'd suggest before doing this you create Windows 7 recovery media - in case you ever want to go back to 7.

As long as you buy DDR3 at ideally at least the same speed as your existing stick, you should be fine.Optimally, this used to be true for the W510:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Optimizing-memory-in-W510-which-slots-to-use/t...Not sure if this still holds. As for compatibility, there has been some known issues with Corsair RAM on ThinkPads; don't know if that's been resolved yet.

So I've had my W540 for about 6 months (purchased direct from Lenovo UK website) and it is running Windows 7 Professional 64bit which it was shipped with. Additional system info:System Model   20BGCTO1WWBIOS Version/Date LENOVO GNET62WW (2.10 ), 26/02/2014Processor   Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4600M CPU @ 2.90GHz, 2901 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) I have recently purchased and installed the maximum of 32 Gb of RAM supported by this model in the form of:4 x 8GB DDR3 PC3-14900 Unbuffered NONECC 1.35V 1024Meg x 64(The recommended upgrade from Crucial(UK) for this very model.) When all four 8Gb modules are inserted only 16Gb of RAM is recognised by the system, both by the BIOS and in Windows System Information: Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB Lenovo solution centre is stating that memory slots 3 and 4 are empty when in fact all 4 slots are full of identical working 8Gb memory modules (see screenshot below):  As far as I can figure out it is not an issue with damage to the slots or the memory modules, since I can get all the 8Gb modules to be recognised when inserted as sole pairs. I have test both pairs of 8Gb crucial RAM to rule out a faulty memory module and the original 2x4Gb modules work, but what doesn't make any sense is how combining and inserting these memory modules in different configurations gives unexpected results. I have tested the following configurations and I don't understand what is going on... Read more

It's a 12.5mm drive, which won't fit. WD does have a 1TB Scorpio Blue that's 9.5mm though. It might fit into an UltraBay caddy with the baseplate removed, but that's a bit of a risk.

Sorry for posting something so basic, but I'm a bit confused.  My W540 has 16 GB of Memory.  The Lenovo software in the computer shows 4GB in each of 4 available slots.  The message says I can increase the memory in each slot up to 32GB, providing I don't go over a total of 32GB (which maxes out the computer). The options for buying memory from Lenovo are in units of 2, 4, or 8 GB.   If I'm interpreting this correctly, I'm going have to ditch the four 4 GB units, and replace them with four 8 GB units.  It's a costly proposition.  My impression when I bought the computer was that I could "add memory" later.  It looks like instead of adding it, I need to replace it. Do I have this right?   And, if so, is there some general wisdom about the least costly strategy for making the upgrade? Thanks, David Lane

Answer:W540 Memory Upgrade Basics

No worries. I believe that you are asking a very good question as this is something that is easily misunderstood by many. Unfortunately, you have this right. In an ideal situation, you would be replacing all of the memory modules, which indeed is quite a costly proposition. It is possible to replace only 1 memory module with another of more capacity, but this is generally not advised as you would be disabling dual-channel technology amongst other amazing efficiency features that require the modules to be the same. During your order, you were given the option to go with 2 memory modules instead (e.g. 28 instead of 44). This would have allowed you to actually ?upgrade? your memory by simply adding 2 more memory modules to your machine. If you plan on carrying out the ?upgrade?, please ensure that you are buying the memory modules in packs and not individually. This should save you some money.

How easy is it to upgrade the stock 1080p lcd to the 3k ips display? Yesterday I received it back from warranty with the lcd replaced.Upon close inspection, I realised that the whole screen housing unit was untouched and they just removed the front bezel, then the lcd screen. I also beleive the enitre dispaly unit wasn't detached from the body during the replacement because I can tell the hinge placement were in the same position before the lcd replacement. So it had me thinking that it should be relativity easy for me with no experience taking part eletronics to be able to replace the lcd on my own since the bezel seems to be just clipped on as oppose to glued on. I'll be able to purchase a 3k ips sceen from a supplier or eBay.What do you guys think .

Answer:W540 1080p to 3k upgrade difficulty

It's risky for anyone to say "go ahead and try it" to someone who may later fry something and come back shrieking. I would, and have, worked on Thinkpads using only some common sense, basic tools, and Lenovo's HMM. I kept myself very grounded and worked carefully, reading the instructions several times. Then, no problem, and I would encourage people to learn by doing.

I have a W540 with the standard display. I HATE this display. I need more resolution. I have found W540 3K display units online, but I'm not sure if it is possible to replace the standard display with one of these units. Has anyone tried this? BTW, for what it's worth, I'm not concerned about the processing power of the video card for higher resolution. The programs that we use do not scale and lower resolution makes the **bleep** thing just about useless. Thanks, Kiel

Hi everyone! For anybody still wondering if it's possible to change your uninspiring TN screen to an FHD IPS one, I can assure you that it's 100 % possible. I did it and it's miles better! Check the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-koOqj2ii4 I got myself a wide gamut model that covers the srgb range (Model : AUO B156HAN01.1). Perfect for Photoshop and video editing! It's just a tad darker than the TN one but for the colors and the black levels, it's absolutely worth it. Bought it brand new for 104 $ CAD, shipping included from laptopscreen.com if anyone wonders. I would like to note that this will only for for W540's already installed with a FHD screen. This will not work for HD screen owners as the cable connector is different. Hope that helps someone! Emil

The W540 laptop has a 3K monitor - 2880x1620.  I run the laptop with an attached FHD 1920x1080 second monitor.  But just don't ever do a Windows "Restart"  --  instead, shut the computer down and then start it manually.  Otherwise the primary desktop will appear on the second monitor and cannot be switched back to the laptop monitor.   Once the primary desktop appears on the second monitor, shut the computer down, remove the second monitor, then start up manually  --  but you will go through a couple of "white knuckle" failed start ups where the laptop monitor remains dark and the laptop must be forcibly rebooted by holding down the start button.  Finally, the laptop monitor comes back to life.   And after any Windows update, be very sure to remove the second FHD monitor before doing the required reboot.  Otherwise, same problem.   So far, so good  --  have always gotten my laptop screen with primary desktop back.  But what will happen after taking the W10 upgrade?   Would appreciate hearing from anyone familiar with this problem  --  would love to get the W10 upgrade, but this computer is too critical to take much of a risk.

Answer:W540 with dual GPU's already causes glitches -- will it be worse after W10 upgrade?

Solution:  Update the BIOS.  The version on my W540 was ten versions out of date.  Updating to the current Windows 10 compatible version went smoothly and upon testing, display glitches described earlier were gone.   Somewhere in between the BIOS version I had and the latest version, installation notes mention the fix Lenovo made for the display problem I was having.

1st off hello. Sorry for having to post such a stupid quesion but ive been Googling for days just cant find an answer.
For some reason my home plug in my back bedroom has just stopped working for no reason. I have a total of 3 TP-Link home plugs in the house. 1 is connected from my BT Infinity box. The 2nd in upstairs in my middle bedroom and the 3rd homeplug in the back bedroom. 2 days ago the 3rd homeplug just stopped working for no reason. So i switched the 2 homeplugs that are upstair with each other. The 3rd homeplug (the non working one) works in the middle bedroom and the 2nd one (the working one) now doesnt work in the back bedroom.
I then thought there was something wrong with the actual plug socket so i tried various appliances in the plug socket including a hoover and a kettle. All work fine.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please as what i need to look at next. Im not super technical.
Thanks
Nathan.

Answer:Home plug help desperately needed

When you say its not working, do you mean that the lights don't come on correctly, or merely that the signal is not reaching the PC. If the former, plug may need replacement, if the latter check/replace the cable.

Hi guys,

The power supply for my supergun (basically a device to hook up an arcade PCB to your TV) has been acting up. It's a pretty standard ATX PSU, but it has a connector I've never seen before. Could someone tell me what this thing is called and where I can find a PSU that has this connector? Or maybe I just have to cut it off my old PSU and slice it into a new one? It's in line with a standard 4-pin molex, so the electricity should work fine, as far as I know.

Thanks!

Hi, my mom is trying to download a sermon using Firefox, but she gets a grey screen saying, "A plug-in is needed to play this content."  Nothing about which plug-in.  The url ends in "org/gnu/skin/board/movie_skin/player/movie.php?bo_table=movie&wr_id=318"  (I could not for the life of me get the actual url to unlink!!)

When I tried using Internet Explorer, it prompted me to use "the following add-on: Windows Media Player Extension."  Shouldn't she already have this?

Edited to add: IE played it once I said yes.  But if I don't want her to have to use IE, should I have her download Gnash?  Seems bizarre that she can't play this in Firefox.

Answer:Which "plug-in is needed to play this content"?

you shouldn't need a plugin just to download something. if you want to watch it online use google chrome which has a built in flash player. that should save you from the risk of installing sneaky plugins and extensions(loads of ads try to hand out infection with messages along the lines of "you need our plugin to view this, totally rubbish anyway, content". ). the prompt in ie is likely because it wants her to allow an already installed plugin rather than actually having to install a new one, but ie is full of security holes so using chrome with it's built in plugins set as "click to play" is your best option. i never trust a site hat tells me to install a plugin when i know i already have an equivalent one.

My W540 came with Windows 8.1; received the update to Windows 10 and all worked fine. I'm now needing to upgrade my HD - which I have a 1TB SS Crucial drive. I was going to mirror the existing drive, but have decided to rebuild/reinstall from scratch to end up with a clean system. It appears I can dowload a Windows 10 installer ISO onto a USB drive (direct from MS) - What is the easiest way to download and install "all" of the required/desired Lenovo drivers for my machine? I would rather not have to install them one at a time once W10 is up and running. I have completed clean installs (on new HD's) a couple dozen times in the past on previousl OS's and Lenovo products -- but hate dealing with the machine/model specific drivers. I appreciate any input and tips!

Answer:W540 Hard Drive Upgrade - Lenovo drivers?

Probably use Lenovo's System Update to do this for you.

Just download and install that Thinkvantage component for your W540 from the Lenovo site, and run it.  It should detect all of your missing and/or out-of-date divers post-clean-install, for all of the hardware on your machine.  Note that as you point out these same drivers and software could also have been manually and downloaded and installed by you, inidivdually.  But System Update will do it for you automatically (although you'll have to review the list it offers and check what you authorize it to perform on your behalf)... whatever Windows Update overlooks during your clean install.

That's what Lenovo System Update is for.

Is there a chance that Lenovo will certify the latest mobile/quadro drivers for use on the W540 - the March 5th release seems to have it's core Nvidia driver elements made from Nvidia Drivers which date back to Q3 2013 -325.xx? The first time I noticed this was in my failed attempt to play BF4 on my machine - if anyone has any success in getting BF4 to run on their W540 - (I have the Nvidia K2100) but the game launcher prompts that I don't have a supported driver version - I had some success disabling optimus (switching to advanced in bios), installing the driver on discrete only (advanced) and all this does is allow me to skip the driver check (but the game run horribly - looks like it runs from the intel HD gpu only?) So in other words could Lenovo distribute an optimus driver which takes in the latest enhcancements made to the latest Nvidia/quadro WHQL (latest being 340.52 WHQL released on the 10th of July 2014!). I'm by no means an expert on drivers/certication - I have only dabbled in tweaking/editing ini files and some Nvidia inspector on my Desktops - but i don't think it's a stretch to assume the improvements/bug fixes made in later driver versions are worthwhile being added to the Lenovo system - Aside from my laptop's secondary function to play a few games, It's a workstation - any "free" improvement to the performance of Solidworks would be welcomed. Alternately, has anyone had success installing/adding optimus drivers from other sources? - Not ... Hi All,

I use a Thinkpad W540 and recently upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. As suggested in the below link I have followed all the procedures and am using the Windows 10 fingerprint registration module and no tools from Lenovo.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/Fingerprint-support-on-Windows-10-ThinkP...

I am able to enroll multiple fingers per account but only one finger will work to login to the account. If I enroll my index finger first then I and then enroll the middle finger I noticed that only the index finger works to sign into the account.

Vice versa in case I enroll the middle finger first then and the index finger second, only the middle finger works to unlock the account.

While trying to use a second finger print for the same account it does not recognize the enrolled print.

Will Lenovo release Fingerprint Manager Pro for Windows 10. I terrible miss the option to sign into websites using the finger print manager.

Please suggest a solution.

Answer:W540 allows to register only one finger print per account after Windows 10 Upgrade.

There is not any "Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro" for Windows 10.  The only Windows 10 way to enroll fingerprints on your W540, is to use Windows Hello.

I'm not sure what could cause the problem you are having, but my advice is to delete all of the fingerprints and try to enroll again.  If that still doesn't work, then reboot and press F1 to enter BIOS setup.  Change to the Security -> Fingerprint section, and choose the option about Reset Fingerprint Data.  Then try enrolling fingerprints again.

I just recently bought a W540 and have the same wake up issue. Most solutions suggest to install an old Intel GPU driver, however the old driver is either missing or won't install on Windows 10. I tried the oldest driver that supports Windows 10 and the issue presists. I also cannot find nvidia graphic card in Device Manager. I also tried lspci in Ubuntu but the result is same. It seems that some people fix the wake up problem with a motherboard replacement. If there is no software solution to those 2 issues I have to go this way. I'd like to know if I can install W541's motherboard in W540's chassis. They look very similar and use the same hmm.

Hello pals. Get ready for a long story  After a long search looking for a robust portable computer to replace my previous notebook, I decided that the Lenovo Thinkpad was the way to go. It's been used since long long time, and a couple of weeks ago a company mate showed me an old IBM Thinkpad that he was using to do some testings and it was... 15 years old!!, so that convinced me definitelly; my next purchase would be a Thinkpad too. With my budget, I decided to go for the Lenovo ThinkPad W540 20BG - 20BG0046SP, a pretty good base (Intel Core i7-4710MQ 2.5 GHz (turbo 3.5 GHz), 15.6" screen @1920x1080 FullHD, NVIDIA Quadro K1100M 2 GB DDR5) which called for an inmediate memory and hard disk upgrade (with only 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD). The usage this computer is going to have involves programming (and some light compiling), working with virtual machines, and some little photoshopping. I received it this Tuesday, with the 3 year extension warranty. I liked the conservative design (it's very discrete), and as it's a Thinkpad I expect it to be robust too!! After taking a closer look at the posibilities I decided to do the following upgrades and order the necesary items. Please bear in mind that doing this wil probably void your warranty and I'm not responsible nor liable for anything that you do on your computer, your dog, or if your house get's blown away by a tornado:Install an internal mSata 256GB M.2 SSD 42mm h... My laptop is making a lot of noise, coming from the fan I think. Also the laptop overheats very easily.
The battery is also not charging. The laptop only works when I have it plugged in. The battery says it's at 11% and has fallen in past couple of days from 14%.
My laptop is a model HP Pavilion g series, windows 7.
Going to run a hardware diagnostic today.

Do you guys know what the problem is?
I think I'm probably going to end up sending it off and having the fan, battery, and maybe powerlead replaced.

Answer:Help needed: battery not charging, fan whirring, overheating

What's the complete model number of that HP Pavilion g series laptop?
What's the exact product number(P/N) on it?

Is that laptop being used on a hard flat surface?

Having the exhaust fan unit and battery replaced may cost more than what that laptop is worth.

My Yoga 700-14ISK has a 256GB SSD. As fitted by Lenovo, it's a Samsung model MZ-YLN2560, part number MZYLN256HCHP-000L2.This SSD is of the new 5mm height format (actually it measures 4.7mm); it fits nicely in the bay's cushioning and uses a bracket designed for this format SSD.I've read posts where people have modified 7mm SSDs to fit but I'd prefer to fit a larger capacity 5mm SSD and retain its warranty. The problem is...there aren't any available! (There was a Seagate 600 series but this does not appear to be available anymore).Has anyone found a good performing 2.5" 500GB SSD that is 5mm high? Thanks, ChrisYoga 700-14ISK 256GB SSD?

Dear all, I have been using 3 external monitors on DISPLAY PORTs since I purchased the W540.Recently, I tried to install a game but it seems like the Nvida adapter is not getting used. I guess all 3 monitors are usning the Intel HD 4600 adapter. Hence the game won't play properly. Is there a way to switch to the Nvidia? My second question is my W540 has 1080 screen on it currently. If I get a 3K screen, is it plug and play if I just swap with the current screen? thank you,Jack

Answer:W540 Video Adapter questions and screen upgrade questions

1) Right-click the game shortcut > Run with graphics processor > High performance NVIDIA. If this works, set a rule for it in NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings.2) Guessing, but it should work if you get exactly the right 3K panel. Some eBay sellers will sell "compatible" panels which may not work 100% (no brightness control, upside down video, etc.).You'll also void your warranty replacing the LCD yourself.

I'm using the W540 with an ultradock and external monitors. After upgrading my W540 to win8.1 64 bit, device manager is showing an unknown device. I'm not quite sure what it is, but almost everything seems to be working fine and Lenovo solution center isn't finding any driver updates. I did notice that the solution center hardware scan did not test the video card memory and listed that test as N/A. Video and monitors seem to be working fine though and both nvidia and intel graphics show up in device manager. Device manager lists the device in question as follows:Device instance path: ROOT\SYSTEM\0001Hardware Ids: root\iwdbusDevice stack: \Driver\PnPManager

Hi, I own the HP Spectre x360 - 15-ap012dx (ENERGY STAR), which came preconfigured from Best Buy with the UHD display and 256gb SSD. I have two questions about this device: 1. Can I upgrade the SSD to an NVMe PCI-e SSD such as the Samsung 960 EVO (which is an M.2 SSD). I know a recent BIOS update added support for new Samsung SSDs, but I want to make sure before I buy one. 2. Can I charge my Spectre via the USB-C port? From what I understand, it might support USB Power Delivery (it's a 3.0 port, not a new Thunderbolt 3 port) Thanks!

Hi all I have a TC-220 currently on Bios P11-A2 Build Date 6/24/2014 Currently Running the A10-7800. I don't use the intergrated APU Graphics so would like to upgrade the CPU. Is this motherboard compatbile with an AMD X4 880k in its current state? Or would it be compatible with the current bios update? Thanks!

Hi, This could be coincidence, however it seems unlikely. I made the rash move of upgrading my Z510 to W10, since then the battery will not charge.  It says its "0% Charging" or "2hrs 32min to full charge", but this never changes. Other than this the laptop is fine. Obviously if you disconnect the mains power the laptop immeadiatley powers down (it seems to manage to hibernate most times but not always). I now also get a message popping up which says 'Weak battery needs replacement" Before the upgrade to W10 I had no battery issues at all could happily work for several hours on battery. It seems to coincidental to not have something to do with the upgrade. Any ideas? Chris

Hello guys,
I have a DELL XPS M1530, and I have 2 batteries.
last week I decided to try windows 7, and I took the chance and downloaded all the updated drivers, including the BIOS.

Once the computer was working OK, I noticed that my battery level only goes down. it was not charging with the AC power plugged. when the battery was at 0% I thought it was some problem with the battery, So I got my spare one... and happened exactly the same thing.

Now I look at the battery icon on the bottom right, and it says "0% available (Plugged in, not charging)"

do you have any ideia what is going on?

Thanks

and if it needs to be replaced where can i buy original battery online?

Answer:Satellite L50T-A196 battery is not charging after Win 10 upgrade

Did the battery charge before the upgrade?

Try this workaround:

Go to device manager, expand the Batteries and uninstall/delete the Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery.

Then reboot the notebook.

MSFT to Start Charging Users for Windows Upgrade (MSFT, AAPL) | Investopedia

So if you don't upgrade before July 29, anytime after July 29 will result in update charges? Wow. I guess they are pulling out all the stops to get everyone to upgrade. What if you bought window 10 say in 2020. Would you still be charged for updates? Sure sounds like it according to that article. The whole windows 10 update is a clusterfuck.

Answer:MSFT to Start Charging Users for Windows Upgrade

You're confusing upgrades and updates. If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 after July 29 you will have to pay for the upgrade not pay for updates to your current OS. Anybody purchasing Windows 10 either as a stand alone copy or included with a new PC is going to get updates the same as anyone else regardless of when they purchase it.

Can someone please guide me as to what is the maximum upgrade allowed on a Lenovo 3000 N100 0768 35U for RAM. I want to purchase it soon therefore want to find out the maximum possible upgrade and the # of slots available for it. Also about a month back my battery stopped working, its not charging and infact if I have it in place, the laptop frequently shuts down on its own. Any advice in this regards? Thank you. Regards, SJ

Answer:Lenovo 3000 N100 RAM Upgrade and Battery Not Charging

Welcome sjang, The maximum memory is 2GB for your N100 and that notebook has a total of 2 slots. Also, you might want to take a look here for more information about troubleshooting battery issues.Message Edited by JohnB on 11-19-2008 06:33 AM

So I've happily stayed with Lenovo for a number of years - I have a laptop power supply in almost each room of my house and in back pack. That's a total of six. My Yoga 13 is on order, but I'm getting cold feet:  I'd really like to not have to buy 5 new power adaptors for a total of 12 Lenovo power adapters, 6 round, 6 blocky, given that I for some reason I still usually have to walk to the next room to retrieve one of my six adapters that seem to randomly migrate between places under the bed, behind the water closet, tugged under the desk, and so... Is there (yet?) a  fantastically simple plug converter, round (female)  to blocky (male), that will attach with a strap to the end of the 20V cable of my existing converters so that each can serve both blocky and round needing Lenovo devices? I image each plug would cost $1 and that Lenovo would sell a bag of 10 of 'em for $10 as part of the customer loyalty program? /Lenovski

Bought Y410 for daughter a few years ago.  She called the other day and said the DC receiver plug was loose and she could not plug in to charge battery or work on house current.  Opened cover above processor and cooling fan and found that the plug was just laying in the proper position but was not connected to anything to hold it in place.  No broken parts, just loose.  Removed fan and copper tubing with fins (heatsink) and removed masking tape and removed wire sleeve (2 red and 2 black bundled wires) from canal track under the cooling fan.  I then was able to lift the Y410 dc power jack harness out of the laptop.  My question is:  how was this connector end mounted and stabilized in the socket mount next to the hole where the charger plug mates with the inside harness.  I see nothing broken, and it will fit back in its location, but there is nothing to hold it in place!  Was it glued in some form or fashion.  This is the weirdest thing I have ever seen.  There is no bracket or no screw holes that look as if there was something holding this connector in place.  My daughter has been very pleased with this laptop, but this problem had me scratching my head.  Any help would be appreciated.  I thought I would find something searching the net about this problem.  Found many consumers having major problems with internal charging plugs connection in all brands.  Bought ... Answer:DC Internal Plug in a 3000 Y410 5575 now moving can't plug in to charge

Yeah, it's the way they are manufactured. Actually, all laptops are this way. It's so that if the plug needed servicing, it can be fixed quickly in the facility. Now, for getting it fixed. If you feel comfortable with a soldering iron, it's a really easy fix. Just hold the jack in place, and apply a little bit of solder to re-attach. Being the person I am, I would put a dash of super glue to hold it in place. But not until I verify that the power outlet is working. Now, if the power plug is fried, there are always similar jacks that you can find on auction sites for cheap that will do the job. But yes, resoldering it should fix it. And the lack of mounting is standard across all brands and makes.

I verified the PSU is good.
I removed all drives, all cards, even memory.
All the fans spin for a moment then nothing they stop.

I assume the MB is now destroyed? A GTX 260 has two 6 pin power connectors, since the PSU only had one 6 pin power connector, I thought to try it.

MB is Asus P5QC
So is it dead?

Answer:Plug in GTX 260, hooked up one 6 pin power plug, motherboard wont post

Did you read the GTX 260 manual to see if it has to have the two connectors on?
This is an old MB, so it has a story. Tell us how did you get it and what memory, GPU etc it has before.
With no memory it won't boot. Do you have a speaker connected to the MB so you can hear the beeps when you turn it on?
Witch power supply you have? GTX 260 requires 500W as minimum.

Hi, today I got a laptop, Toshiba Satellite A215-S7416 to be specific. It's an older laptop but I needed something to use currently because I'm having major problems with my main computer. It came with Windows Vista Basic. I decided I'd upgrade the OS so I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and formatted the hard drive before doing so, because the previous owner had a lot of left over junk that made the computer slow. It's running perfect currently, but it's not charging my battery. While the computer is off the battery light will light up orange, signaling it's charging. But when I start up the computer the light goes off and the charging icon at the bottom right has a red x and tells me to consider replacing my battery, and that it's at 0% and isn't charging. I'm going to attach a screen shot showing the icon. For reference I've downloaded all the updates for my windows, include the SP for Windows 7. I've also tried to uninstall the battery's driver and restart the computer, and it's did nothing.

Also here are some specs for this laptop:
2gbs of ram
1.7ghz dual core cpu (amd)
~110gb hdd

I tried to update my battery firmware after getting a message from the thinkpad tools today. the firmware installed halfway then completed with an error, it then asked me to click "ok" to shut down the laptop. now my battery gauge is showing 0%, the battery charging logo in the task bar has an "x" on it. The battery is not charging as well. i have to plug in the AC adapter to use the laptop. I tried to reinstall the firmware, however it says there is no connected batteries that need upgrading. In the battery management tool, it also shows battery condition as "unknown"  help!!!

I think the firmware flash went bad. You'll probably have to use your warranty.

So currently I have my PC connected to the printer with a USB cable and my 10 year old printer works just fine. I'm turning my desktop into a wireless desktop for the time being and going to install a WiFi pci card in the tower. Once I get my computer connected online wireless. So if I take the printer USB cable from the back of the PC tower and plug it into the back of the router will the printer work right away or do I have to setup the printer within the routers 192.... page ? or will I have to install any extra router software programs on the PC to get the printer to work ? I'm just wondering what my steps will be.

Answer:So if I plug my printer to my router will it be plug&play ?

It really depends on your router. Some routers do have that functionality and are "smart" enough to realize what to do with a printer attached via USB ports. Some may require you to configure it on the router's setup, and others may not let you network your printer at all that way. You should probably count yourself lucky if your router does it at all... my router has USB ports, but they're basically only good for charging a phone... they planned a firmware update to do more with them, but it never came through.

The most foolproof way to network a printer is to get a model with an Ethernet port or a Wi-Fi card built into the printer that's just designed for networking. Any computer on the network will then "see" the printer and be able to install drivers for it without the router having to be smart. Failing that, you might have to plug the printer's USB cable into a computer of some kind... but the catch is, it doesn't have to be very powerful or large. A $5 Pi Zero or a $30 "print server" off Newegg would do the job. Basically, any old computer lying around with USB ports could most likely work as a print server if it can be configured with CUPS and the appropriate version of Samba.

I have an almost fresh install of xp on my desktop and want to avoid cluttering the hard drive with stuff to slow it down. One of the things I have noticed is that media players seem to reproduce like rabbits...media player comes with windows...then some website will say that it can't live without having real player installed...and then another one...my favorite is VLC...and of course, itunes....

I noticed that there is a plug-in to make Firefox work with VLC I think there are also other plug-ins for other media players as well. What exactly do these things do? If I have the plug-in do I have to install the software? Do they improve the ease of use of the media player? the quality of the sound? do they reduce the cpu load?

Answer:[SOLVED] Plug it in, plug it in...and media players

Media plugins allow the browser to play audio and video files in different formats on websites.

They are not all in use at the same time (just called on when needed by a website's embedded media player), so they don't slow down your computer or fill up your hard drive.
