W510 touch screen stops responding after upgrade to Windows 10

Question: W510 touch screen stops responding after upgrade to Windows 10

I updated windows 7 to windows 10.After the update I started experiencing issues with touch screen. It starts working fine, but about 30 seconds later the touch screen stops responding. Disabling any of the HID drivers and enabling them, reenables the touch screen for another 30 seconds I tried removing the HID drivers, all of themi went to services.msc and set the process to automatic. This did not fix the issue. Anyone with a similar problem, or solution

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: W510 touch screen stops responding after upgrade to Windows 10

Hello all,  I have come across a very strange issue and searching on this forum and Google have not shown something fully similiar. This past weekend I did the update to Windows 8.1 from Win 8 and now the touch screen on my W510 stops responding anywhere from 20-60 seconds after login. I have checked the driver and it is currently using the Wacom Gesture Touch Properties v.7.0.1.0 from 12/2010, Microsoft HID-compliant vendor-defined device from 6/2006 and Microsoft HID-compliant touch screen driver from 6/2006. Windows states these are the latest drivers and that all is working properly.  I have attempted to identify if there are any startup conflicts without success. The touchscreen is fine and then all of a sudden there is no response. No problems at all with with Windows 8. This seems to me to be a software conflict or firmware problem as there is functionality when I first start the machine. Any ideas would be apprecicated.  System info: W510 4318CTO Intel Core i7 Q 720 @1.60GHz8GB RAMnVidia Quadro FX 880M15.6-inch (396mm) FHD (1920x1080) color, anti-glare, LED backlight, MultiTouch (touchscreen supports two-finger touch)Windows 8.1 Thank you.

Answer:W510 touch screen stops responding since Windows 8.1

Well I was hoping for some suggestions. Still working on this myself. I have found that if I go into services.msc and restart the Human Interface Device Service, then the touch screen will start working again for a about a minute. As long as I'm working with it, everything is good. If I let it sit for some time, ~20 sec, then it's no longer working. The startup type for this service is Automatic (Trigger Start). Maybe things are not being triggered.Or this is a red herring...

Has anyone noticed that every once in a while, a Yoga screen becomes unresponsive to touch?  I use mine mostly in tablet mode, and sometimes out of the blue, I can no longer do anything with the screen.  I have to use the power button to put the laptop to sleep, and then press it again to wake--everything works again after that.  So I'm wondering why that happens.  Is it a touchscreen driver crashing?  Has anyone found whether there's some driver version that works better or else another solution?  P.S.: Im using all the latest drivers I could find, including the latest Intel display driver.  No other issues at all other than this one.

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro: touch screen stops responding to touch sometimes

I have not had this issue, but is it possible that it has something to do with transitioning in and out of tablet mode?   In my normal usage I have to fold the screen about halfway closed to set my T2P down which puts the device in tablet mode.  Occasionally, when I open it back up the keyboard and touchpad do not respond.  If I close it most of the way then reopen, it snaps back to laptop mode and all is OK.  Your issue may be completely unrelated, but I am offering it in case it jogs some other thoughts.

Hi,  My X1 Screen does not come back after sleep for several minutes. I've encountered this problem the very fist day I've received it, a reboot solved the problem but after few days it happened again, this time it took 2-3 hours for it to come back after several reboots. After a week it was gone for good, Service replaced the motherboard and just received my X1 back yesterday. Today it happened again. A reboot solved the problem but symptoms are same. Comp goes to sleep, when I try wake it up, X1 works but diplay is totaly gone. I can hear the sounds, see the fingerprint sensor etc is alive but can not wake up the display..  Model is 208A and Win 8.1 Any ideas ?  Thanks

Hello All - I just noticed that my multi-touch (not enhanced multi-touch) screen no longer responds to finger touch; just pen. It used to respond to both before i upgraded to Windows 7.I tried the Lenovo diagnostic check for the touch screen, and during the test, it only responded to the pen. What should I do? Is there a certain driver i'm missing or need to uninstall and then re-install?Thanks in advance.

Answer:Post Windows 7 Upgrade - Touch Panel Not Responding to Finger Touch (x200t)

Ok...I think i really screwed something up. As per a Lenovo support tech's advice, i installed the Windows 7 "Enhanced" Multi-touch Driver, even though i do not have the enhanced multi-touch screen, and this is what it says on Lenovo's site about this new driver: "*1: ThinkPad X200 Tablet models with the Multitouch are NOT supported." "*1: ThinkPad X200 Tablet models with the ENHANCED Multitouch ARE supported." So, i go ahead and install it. I notice that finger touch now works, but the pen setting are now all screwed up! The eraser no longer responds when i turn the pen around to erase. It actually INKS with the eraser as well! OneNote no longer automatically starts inking (or erasing) when i bring the pen (or eraser) into range. I have to manually click on the pen icon (or the eraser icon) on the tool bar to use these functionalities! *groan* In the Tablet PC Input Panel: no eraser functionality (it inks instead!!) and even the button on the pen (which previously had the right-click ability) only inks when pressed down! I think i made my situation worse...Please Help! Adam

Hi  I have a W510 and windows system tells me that it has touch support with 2 touch points. A few questions: (1) Does this mean my thinkpad has a touch screen ? (2) If so do I need to install a driver to get oit working. So far touch is not enabled Thanks

Answer:W510 Think Pad Windows 10 Touch Screen

There was a touchscreen option on W510, but it is rare and I have never seen one.  If you never had a touchscreen before, you may not really have one now.  W510 is not officially supported in windows 10 so it may be incorrectly reported

I just encountered this problem, it seems like an issue with the touch screen driver. When a monitor is connected via VGA and that monitor is made the primary display, whenever I touch the laptop screen, the click indication appears on the wrong monitor. Is there a driver update that fixes this? Who should be notified? What company made/supports the touch screen?

Answer:W510 touch registers on wrong monitor when touch screen not primary display

hey MRX,regarding this, really hard to say what could be the cause.curious to know, the external monitor which you are using, did it by any chance some with its own drivers ? also have you tried reversing and placing the external monitor as the primary ? does it make any difference?

Hi, I have the Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch, new as of april 2014, and since last week, the touch screen has stopped responding to touch inputs. Before this it has been working and behaving perfectly. I have tried to turn the laptop entirely off and on, reboots... No effect. The screen simply acts like it never was touch. The HID driver is present and claims to be working. I tried to reinstall it and it does so with no errors or warnings. I also tried to reinstall the monitor and graphics card drivers. The Tablet control panel icon offers a calibrate option but Reset is disabled. The calibrate doesn't help because it doesn't respond to touch. System says it has touch with 10 finger inputs. Windows 8.1 Update 1, Enterprise SKU Any advice is welcome. UPDATE! Touch works when I lay the screen out flat. But if I return it to any angle, it stops working. Is this related to LayFlat mode or is there a connection fault in the display for touch input so only when I lay it flat it has contact? Software or hardware?

Received my ThinkPad Yoga today - i7 ? 8 Gb - 256 Gb SSD - Win 8.1 pro ? One major problem ? the touch screen stops responding to finger intermittently. It always responds to the stylus. Updated all the Lenovo drivers and did Windows updates. When it stops responding, the only way to get it to work is by doing a shut down ( restart does not work ). Read the forums and disabled and enabled HID-compliant vendor-defined device. That did not make any difference. Is this a common issue and is there a software fix for it or is it just a faulty screen?

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga 20CDCTR1WW - Touch Screen not responding to touch - intermittent

Hi Waferthin,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with Touch screen on ThinkPad Yoga.

To resolve the issue please follow the below troubleshooting steps.

Remove the Wacom touch gesture driver in the device manager and make sure to check "uninstall driver" when you do so otherwise the touch will stop working again a minute later.
And after that restart the system and the touch screen driver will automatically install.
In services.msc restart human interface device service to run automatically.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I have a Lenovo s400 and the Touch screen is not functioning.  The details highlighted in the blog also describe exactly what happened to my computer - I updated to Windows 8.1, it worked intermittantly for a week and would cease to work after the computer slept for a brief time, then there were ghost taps in the top corners that were inceasant, then it no longer functioned at all.  The online support staff attempted all of the software updates to no avail.  I am looking for any type of help to resolve this problem.

Multi-touch seems like a nice feature but adds cost and weight.  Will use the laptop for work as well as Photoshop especially when traveling.  I don't see that Photoshop yet knows how to play with this screen. If it could replace a Wacom tablet it would be worth its weight in gold.  I realize few of these things have shipped but interested in any opinions.  Thanks for any comments.Mike

Can you confirm if it is anything like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlduLoBCCCQ I have a x61t with Windows 7. When I use the digitizer for some time, it just happens  time by time, I lose control of the clicks either with digitizer or mouse. I can still move the cursor and all, but nothing works. I have to press control alt delete to open up task manager, then press cancel, and it works again. This is so annoying. This doesn't happen when I'm on Vista though.  x61t, multitouch/multiview, bluetooth, 3gb ram, intel 4965agn, intel x25-m SSD.

My phone fell, and when it turned back on the touchscreen wasnt responding. Theres a little crack on the bottom left. It gives me the 'battery is critically low' warning, and lets me tap the 'ok' button. But then it goes back to not responding. Its like only the top half of the screen works, but thats only sometimes. Could it still be fixed? What can i do? I already turned the phone on then off, i already took out the battery, and reset my phone for no reason because it was no help.

Answer:Why isn't my touch screen responding?

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have a busted digitizer. A digitizer is the piece of hardware that allows the screen to receive and respond to your finger touching your phone.
Sometimes parts of the screen work while others do not. I'd recommend doing a Bing search on replacing the digitizer in your specific phone. If it's under some sort of warranty, that may be an option as well.
Best of luck!

I have tried to install windows 10 three times now. every time I have the menu at the bottom of the screen will stop responding after a few start ups and I can't use my dvd rw drive or usb drive. it says i don't have one. I'm running windows 7. would appreciate any help I could get. I was looking at the different tutorials and was wondering if turning off automatic driver updates would work. although I don't know what that would have to do with the bottom menu not responding.

Hi there!

Since i installed 10 i have lost the touch screen (not that i ever used it) and was just wondering if there was a fix for it? Also compatability issues with some of the apps such as Lenovo Eye Distance sensor. I run a compatibility check, it says it's fixed and sure enough it's working, but when i fire up the computer again it's the same again!

I also found out that this version apparently is not supproted in 10 by Lenovo, so why the heck did it allow the upgrade?! I do like 10 and was just wondering if half this Lenovo crap could be uninstalled anyway... would my computer survive without it?
Most of the Lenovo stuff does appear to be working but when i proceeded with a request to upgrade drivers using Lenovo Companion (which i thought would solve the touch screen problem) it appeared to search for upgrades then notified Updates: Never.

So if i can't ever get upgrades for the Lenovo crap where does that leave me? I might just as well try and uninstall most of it... What are your thoughts?!

Regards, Steve.

Every now and then (I haven't pin pointed if it is a specific event that triggers is) my touch screen stops working as touch screen. It does everything, it only doesn't respond to touch.
If I restart, put the machine to standby, shut down and start it again everything is fine again.

I have no clue what might have been changed recently!

Does somebody recognize this?

Check to see if the touch device is set to allow Windows to turn it off to save power (a usual setting for things like USB slots, NICs, etc.)

Hi I recently purchased my Lenovo Yoga 720 off of Amazon (less than a month). After going through all the Windows and BIOS updates through Lenovo Companion, I ran into an issue where the touch screen would stop responding. Sometimes upon start up, the touch screen would be unresponsive up until a restart/shut down. Sometimes even restarting/shutting down wouldn't solve the problem. The touch screen was unresponsive more times than responsive during the duration I've owned this laptop. I read in Lenovo forums that factory resetting the laptop and disabling updates would alleviate the problem. I did so through Windows 10's hard disk wiping feature. I disabled automatic updates through Command Prompt and didn't run any updates through Lenovo Companion. This seems to have fixed the issue for the most part, however, I still notice that sometimes the touch screen will stop responding after waking the computer from "Display Off."  Is this a problem such as that with the fan noise, that was fixed months later in a BIOS update? Has anyone been able to use the touch screen flawlessly? Sometimes mid-way through laptop usage, the touch screen will become unresponsive and then become responsive minutes or seconds later. I'll probably continue to use the laptop with automatic updates turned off, but that would mean I miss the current updates and have to constantly check forums to verify that the problem is fixed     Could anyone offer insight into this?

I have Lenovo Y70 Touch with GTX 960m and a month after I bought it, touchscreen stopped working. Restart helped but the problem started to occur more often. After some time even restart don't help. Here's what I tried:-rolling back to Windows 8.1 (didn't work)-reinstall and update graphic drivers (didn't work)-reinstall Windows 10 from usb (didn't work)-restart the computer (worked some time ago, now doesn't help)-reset the computer by pressing and holding power button for 30 second when turned off (didn't work)-bios update (helped until next restart)-delete all hid devices from device manager (sometimes works, I have to try this multiple times)-disable turning off all usb devices to conserve power (didn't work)-changed usb power settings in windows (didn't work) Sometimes the touchscreen works when I log into Windows and stops working after few seconds after that. Sometimes after disabling hid devices it works until next restart. It's really annoying, I've read about this on the Microsoft website and it said "restart your computer"... Does anyone else has a problem like this? Has anyone found a solution?

This is just a warning to help others that may find themselves with a similar problem -- I got my new Yoga 13 this weekend and shortly after setting it up the touch screen stopped working.  I thought it was from one of the Logitech drivers I installed so I restored the system and started over.  But I kept losing touchscreen functionality and thought it might be a hardware problem. I ended up restoring my system several times before finding the culprit, an incompatible or misbehaving software app.  I had installed Teamviewer Touch amongst many others and it seems to disable the touchscreen.  Uninstalling that app restored touchscreen functionality and I haven't had a problem since.  Luckily I figured out the issue before going back to the store and exchanging my Yoga.  (I did lose the contents of my D: partition during the restore but thanks to the other forum user for uploading Drivers and I can copy the other folders sometime while at the store)

My XPS recently developed this issue. I traced the problem back to the I2C HID Device in Human Interface Devices which was stopped with code 34. I followed suggestion in another post; downloaded and installed Intel I2C BUS driver for Touch screen and Touchpad version 1.0.1.121, A01. Now touch screen works for a while and then stops. In order to re-activate the touch pad I have to restart the computer which is rather annoying.
How can I fix the problem?

Same here with Yoga 700 and win10. Although highly unlikely but did you find a solution maybe? At this point, I am off the opinion that you finding a solution is better chance than Lenovo doing it.

Sometimes on my Yoga 370 the touchscreen will stop working on the left side, about 5 cm from the edge. I don't know if this is a driver issue (Win10) or hardware. It will usually start working again when restarting. Any ideas how to troubleshoot?

If your touch screen is not responding to your touch, try this:try looking at Device Manager,  if there's a yellow-flagged item and/or no driver for touch screen under HID (human interface device)  then you have to add it. click on the yellow flag item, tell it to update driver from list from your computer,   go to Generic drivers, not the Acer ones, choose the one that's called HID touch screen,  update it,  restart, and there you go.check another post here on this forum,  from scotsman.  he gives the steps maybe a little better than I do..Acer tech supoort were useless, as usual,  and told me I had to do a Restore.  They are worse than useless, actually, since they waste tons of your time and then all they can tell you is to do a complete restore. When will Acer ever get decent tech support people? When you look at Amazon reviews, for example, under my particular laptop,  you find over a hundred reviews,  large percent being rather negative,  but you'll notice that it's mostly over bad experiences with Acer tech support.   and this is for a thousand dollar machine !!I personally believe that Acer makes good hardware but what's holding them back is their tech support:  it's horrible !!!

Hello Everybody,
I have a Latitude E7440 non touch screen version that needs a complete new display assembly due damage. I was wondering if it is possible to fit a complete touch screen assembly as a replacement? I noticed that the back shell of the touch assembly is slightly different and I guess the whole structure is heavier than the non-touch version.
Many thanks,
Viktor

Answer:E7440 upgrade from non-touch to touch screen

It is possible - but everything north of the base/keyboard needs to be replaced -- upper structure, bezel, screen, cables, antenna wires and hinges.

My client told me this was a touch screen, so that is what I ordered.  HP 749970-001 touch screen display assembly. It is installed, but not recognized.  In order to use it as a touch screen, would I have to replace the motherboard too?Is there a driver available?  The display works, it is just not working as a touch screen.

Hi everyone,  I am currently using a Lenovo T450s with the default screen option when checking out. I would like to upgrade to a touch screen. I would like to ask if:- the upgrade from non-touch to touch screen is possible?-where could I buy the touch screen for the laptop? would this one work? https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-T450S-Touch-Screen-04X5911/dp/B01H0NKM5W/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=147986... - where could i the basic guide to do it by myself? The most important question that I think is the first one: whether it is possible to upgrade from a non-touch to touch screen on T450s. I look forward to hearing all the suggestions.Thank you.

Welcome to the Forums Dahlia!

Press Windows+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Find the Touchscreen driver under Mice and Other Pointing Devices>USB Touchscreen Controller(A111).  You're going to uninstall this and check the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device".  Don't worry, it won't blow up your computer.
- Restart your computer.
- Re-open the Device Manager, and confirm that the Touchscreen is now listed under Human Interface Devices.

Hi there! Need help. Obviously. Hope people still look at this fourm... I have a Lenovo Yoga 3 1470 Laptop. Its...a few years old AND it is out of warrenty (so please no recommendations for sending it into Lenovo Repair Service). It is running the Windows 10 update, though it initally came with Windows 8.1  A few days ago I factory reset the computer to wipe it of all files and such. When the reset was finished it updated and reloaded itself with Windows 10. Everything seemed fine at first... HOWEVER, the touch screen is not responding to anything. I can fold the laptop into tablet mode, the physical keyboard will shut off but it will not respond to touches by any means. The Pen & Touch information in windows settings says that Pen & Touch are not available for this device. I have checked the drivers and the HID-Compliant Driver is NOT THERE (it was at first but it was greyed out and gave me a code 45).  Tent mode also doesn't work. I can flip the computer over, and Auto -Rotate will appear on the screen but the screen never flips. I have searched high and low on Google and Lenovo but perhaps I am missing something, a driver update or ...anything. I tried to fix it from the touch screen settings but nothing seems to work. and advice on fixing this is greatly appreciated.

I brought my Satellite A500 2 weeks ago and ever since at times and sometimes worse the screen will go black and come back on again and I get an error message in the bottom right corner with the following :-

Display driver Nvidia Windows kernal mode driver 187.98 Stopped responding and has successfully recovered.
Now i have updated the driver but the same issue is still present and the same error message but instead of 187.98 I get 197.16

Has anyone fixed this issue or is it a problem that Toshiba needs to fix and quick as I am not happy.

Hi, I've been having problems with the touchpad on my Lenovo ThinkPad Helix 369847B.  If I un-dock the screen to use in tablet mode and then re-dock with the keyboard, the touchpad might not work (no mouse, no left or right click), but the screen and keyboard still work. The same also happens (sometimes) if I sleep the machine by closing the screen then  re-opening.  Can't find a way to get the touchpad to work again, other than a restart, which is quite frustrating. Tried removing the screen, resetting the keyboard with a paperclip and re-docking - but no luck. Can anyone please tell me how to get the machine to recognise the touchpad again, without having to do a reboot?   Or any way to stop this happening? Machine stats:Lenovo ThinkPad Helix 369847BWindows 8.1 Pro 64-bit Also the machine is fully updated via Lenovo System Update & Windows update + latest keyboard firmware. Thanks Christopher

Hello everyone, this is my first post here and I will make it as short as possible. First, thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and helping me out in any way possible. I have a fairly new W510 machine with a crucial 256GB SSD in it. My SSD crapped out (luckily I had a back up) crucial sent me a new one and I just imaged the new drive a couple of days ago with my backup (The backup is made from the original Lenovo install). However during the imaging some Windows components were damaged for some reason (perhaps due to the previous drive crapping out). The only fix was to go ahead and use the retail windows 7 Pro DVD to "repair" the windows installation by clicking the "upgrade" button after inserting the disk. --As Microsoft suggested this to fix an existing win 7 installation. After I did that EVERYTHING worked flawlessly! I was really happy with the machine, it booted in 30 seconds and what not. However, the multi touch driver for my W510 screen will not stick ... no matter how many times I install it, as soon as I "log out" of the machine, the driver rolls back to a normal pointing device and multi touch is disabled and my on-screen keyboard vanishes. It is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Here is exactly what I'm doing. 1 - Log into my Admin user account2 - Install this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-749083 - Multi Touch works great!4 - Logoff or Lock machine or put it to sleep.5 - Log back in my admin user account6 ... Answer:windows stops responding

Lets check your HDD and ram to start with, if either of these are faulty then you will have these types of issues.

Please first test your ram, with Memtest. Download it here.

We will want to check the condition of your hard drive next.

Download HD Tune and save the file. Install HD Tune and restart it after installation. Then go to the tab Error Scan , select the hard drive you want to check and press Start . The check can be quite time consuming take depends on the size of the hard drive check. Take a screen shot of the result and save it. Upload it to IMGUR for us. Post the link here.

Hello, Ok I am having a very frustrating problem. I brought my computer with me to Senegal (I am a Peace Corps volunteer) and now i am having major problems with it. I will be working on my computer when all of the sudden it stops responding. I can move the mouse but none of the programs respond. When I try to control+alt+delete I get a message that says "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialog - Failure-Security options" I then have to manually shut down my computer. Lately it has gotten much worse and it will freeze while it has only been running for a few minutes. I also tried to run a Primary Hard Disk Self Test and I got the message "Hard Disk Test Failed Hard Disk 1 full (305). I do not know what this means. My computer works alright in Safe Mode. At first I thought my hard drive might be overheating due to the extreme temperatures we have in Senegal, but wouldn't it also be affect in Safe Mode? I thought maybe there was a virus so I tried to scan with ESET, nothing came up, with AVG it found a few things and quarantined them, and Malwarebytes didn't find anything. However, I have only been able to scan in Safe Mode because my computer freezes in regular mode. Does anyone know what might be happening? I'm very upset because I'm afraid I might have to buy another computer and to get it all the way here is a pain and expensive. If anyone has ANY ideas I would greatly appreciate them. Thank you!!!

By far the simplest fix is to use System Restore to roll back Windows to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.Video: Fixing a problem using System Restore

Hi all,I'm having a very strange problem. First time I've run into a problem of this kind. My computer works fine for a while and then Windows Explorer stops responding. It's not one of those ones with a "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..." type errors, but rather, when I open My Computer, My Documents, or any folder in general, I can't access the drives or files. Double clicking does nothing, simply highlights the files. The drop-down menus also stop responding. Sometimes they won't drop at all. The blue toolbar on the left side disappears. I've run virus and spyware checks and they came up clean. Anybody know what's happening?

Hope you can help! I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, 4GB, 64bit, Intel i5, NVIDIA, Kaspersky Internet Security 15.0.2.
I primarily use IE11, but switch to Mozilla Firefox 43.0.2 when IE stops responding. My primary email is AOL which I access via web, not software. Computer often slow and hangs.

The main issue is IE11 "stops responding" several times a day. I've run the latest version of Malwarebytes (subscription), Glary Utilities Pro, Kaspersky IS, CCleaner, and Disk Cleanup. I delete browing history daily. No virus or malware shows up after scans. Recently ran a full scan on Kaspersky overnight+ and still, no viruses detected. I'm not sure what the issue is and would gladly go back to IE9 or 10 if IE11 is the issue, but I need to be sure.

Whatever guidance you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Gidday all,

I'm getting quite annoyed at the problems that I think Explorer is causing.

Things generally run fine until I open Explorer if I need to copy files etc.

Most times, but not all the time, it will stop repsonding and i need to end the task in task manager. The rest of the system works without problem.

I have attached a Hijack This log file. Even when the log file opened (txt format) it stopped resoponding and I had to use Task Manager to close the log file.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks,

Steve

I havent figured out why this happens since I reinstalled Win7.

This only happens when I am going through the control panel. Here is what happens:

If I have to uninstall a program, I will go to programs and features and click programs and features and explorer will just freeze then if I keep clicking, I get "This program is unresponsive - Close, Restart, etc" I always choose restart it and it reloads fine.

The same things happens if I go to System or pretty much anything in the control panel.

Does anyone of any idea why this happens?

Answer:Windows Explorer Stops Responding

Hi nealj121,

How recent is this problem? Did Control Panel ever work? If it did, try a System Restore.
System Restore

Also try the SFC/SCANNOW command to see fix any corrupted system files.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If nothing else works, try a repair install.
Repair Install

Could you also fill out your System Specs? It will make it easier for us to diagnose the problem. Is your computer your own build or did you buy it from a retailer, for example Dell?

Hope this helps,
Jaidyn

At random times, windows explorer on my windows 8 computer stops responding. When it stops responding I try to restart it in task manager. Then my desktop restarts and the then everything disappears except for my open tabs and the color of my desktop. But all of my applications are Gone. I can't access anything. I then restart and everything is back to normal.

Answer:Windows explorer stops responding

I just had that when i installed Stardock Fences for windows, i guess it was not compatible with my Start 8 application.

I removed it and no more problems..

Do you have a desktop enhancement installed?

What were the last couple programs that you installed?

Hi, im running windows vista and ive got a strange problem. I have 2 hard drives, My C: which is 250G and my K: which is 500G. Well every time i go to my computer or even get on anything it says windows explorer stopped responding. Im sure this is a problem with the drive because it happened after i got a blue screen. So i went to the recovery options and clicked on system restore and an error pops up that says theres an error with the C: drive. And when i do tests on the drive it says everything passed and there is no error??? so my questions are this:

1) Why does windows explorer stop responding when i open up a file
2)How do i fix the stop responding error?
3)What is causing the blue screens and how do i stop them.

Thank you so much and god bless

(ps. it happens when i open up any file, my first drive, second drive, or even just a document, so i dont think its a hard drive failure because my information is still there and it happens on both of them)

Answer:Windows Explorer Stops Responding!!!!

Googling found other users in Vista with the same problem . I have copied their solution below.

Go to

c:\documents and settings\<profilename>\local settings\application data\microsoft\windows

Rename that folder to "windows_old"

Then log out and log in to the profile that's having the issues. When you log into that profile, it will recreate that windows folder. And Viola.

You will need to be logged in as a different User. When you log back in under the orginal user Windows will recreate the renamed file

I am using a Lenovo laptop with preinstalled Windows 10 for over two years now and things were running fine. A couple of days back I noticed that all of a sudden all my Windows programs would stop working - nothing would respond including browsers, programs, task manager and even the Windows start menu. I can't even restart or shut down due to this problem. I am not really sure what happened as I did not install any new programs recently.

I am running on 12GB of RAM with an i5 processor and use a licensed copy of Norton Antivirus that protects me from spyware / malwares as well. Please help.

Answer:Windows 10 programs stops responding

Unfortunately, Norton is not very effective in stopping some viruses from getting in. It sounds like you are infected. but Restart the computer and press F8 continuously. In the Advanced Boot Menu, boot into Safe Mode With Networking. Does everything work here? If not, you can enable the Hidden Built in Administrator Account. Restart the computer and login as the Built in Administrator. If everything works as admin, then your user profile has become corrupted. This link is for Windows 7 but is the same procedure.

I just recently build a gaming pc. I have an 2tb Seagate HDD and I am running Windows 10 Pro OEM. My problem is that every time I start up the computer it boots to the Windows 10 lockscreen fine. I can unlock it fine --- if I do it within 30 seconds of the boot success. When I do unlock it in time, it works fine for about 45 seconds until everything stops responding. Safe Mode won't even launch without the PC freezing. Even Windows File Explorer and the taskbar stop responding when the pc starts up. I've tried reinstalling Windows but it says that the drive is locked. I did end up getting past the locked drive screen but now it says that a partition on my hard drive has been emptied (I forget the exact word) and therefore, it can't access the Windows boot options. That is odd because in the My PC part of Windows Explorer it says that I still have 1.71 TB of storage left on my HDD. I've tried everything I could find online and Windows 10 still doesn't work. I've looked up how to unlock it but every time I try it, the computer just stops responding. I am still able to move the mouse, but I can't click or type. I am sure I built it correctly because it worked fine two days ago. The errors have been happening about for about two days after I built it until I hit a Home Run in R.B.I. Baseball 2016. I don't yet have a WiFi adapter so I have been downloading everything to a USB flash drive and copying it to the PC. I am not able to run the Windows 10 install media that I have on a f... Read more

when my internet connection goes off i cant open ANY folders, i can open files that are directly on my desktop, but any folder or anything i try to open make windows explorer stop responding... i bought the computer brand new, and this has been going on since i got it i think... didnt notice it until my internet went off...

Answer:windows explorer stops responding

It could be something driver related. Try reinstalling the drivers for the networking card. Also it could mean that your Hardrive's life is almost over, while this is unlikely in new computers. you should check to be sure. Try and lookup the SMART status of the harddrive by using SMART viewer which is located on Hirens Bootdisc You can get the bootdisc by doing a little search on the internet. Hi everyone,My grandad has a PC which should (judging by the components) run very fast. It only has a few programs installed and it usually runs at a good speed. However, it sometimes, usually just after the windows xp welcome screen, slows up completely to the point of being unusable. Under these conditions, the computer can't be shut down via the start menu and cannot be turned off by the on/off switch on the front of the box. Surely this should bypass Windows altogether and just block off power from the Power Supply Unit? The OS has been reinstalled once, and if possible, can we avoid this again? On my next thread I will publish details about the computer's specifications and software installed.Any advice given will be brilliant,Thanks a lot,SB

I hope some can help me. I have problems shutting down my windows xp after more than about 2, 3 hours usage. In other words, if I shut down PC after a short time usage, I don't have any problems at all, but if I leave my PC on for a while, (seems to be more than 2.5 hours or so) windows xp stops responding during shut down. One of my friends suggested me to check the set-up, but I don't know where to check. If anyone can any ideas, please please please help me. Thank you.

I was browsing the internet and suddenly Windows Explorer stops responding, it sends information to Windows about the problem and then restarts. Okay so that's fine, it happens. Then it happens again, about 30 seconds later, still restarts. This doesn't affect me browsing the internet on Mozzila, but what is causing this. It hasn't happened the third time yet.

I have this problem and have discovered many, many others do also. They explain it in different ways but the basic problem is the same. The problem seems to be in the Vista operating syatem. The Windows Explorer stops responding and must be closed and restarted.
In my case I go on line and all is well for a while. I have two pages open and I go back and forth between them by clicking on the taskbar. Then suddenly when I put my cursor on one of the items on the taskbar all I see is the activity symbol and nothing happens. when I double click on the item I get the message that the Windows Explorer isn't responding. I then have to close the Windows Explorer program a reopen it. However I haven't lost anything I've been doing.
Restarting Windows Explorer again gives me the ability to use the taskbar to go between pages for a while and then the whole thing go bad again.

I've searched all over and found this problem of windows explorer hanging and failing to respond is exceptionally wide spread.

Has anyone heard of a solution? I suspect not.

PS: I've done a complete reload of Vista using the CD provided with the computer, no change. I've also run System File Checker, no change. My computer is a Toshiba and Toshiba has less knowledge than I do about the software.

windows powershell stops responding radomly. I am running 64 bit windows 8

Answer:Windows powershell stops responding

You may be infected with Poweliks which typically affects the ability to browse or download files using Internet Explorer and causes PowerShell error alerts. Task Manager typically shows numerous occurrences of (COM Surrogate) dllhost.exe or dllhst3g.exe. If using a 64-bit version of Windows, then these entries will be listed as dllhost.exe *32 or dllhst3g.exe *32. These processes are known to spawn and consume a large amount of system resources as described here.If you are having trouble downloading files with Internet Explorer, follow these instructions to re-enable downloads/reset all Security zones to default. Please download ESETPoweliksCleaner and save it to your Desktop Double-click on ESETPoweliksCleaner.exe to start the tool.Read the terms of the End-user license agreement and click Agree if you agree to them. The tool will run automatically. If the cleaner finds a Poweliks infection, press the Y key on your keyboard to remove it...If Poweliks was detected "Win32/Poweliks was successfully removed from your system" will be displayed.Press any key to exit the tool and reboot your computer...The tool will produce a log in the same directory the tool was run from.Copy and paste the contents of that log in your next reply.Note: If the log is too long...you may need to split it and use multiple replies in order to post all the information.
