W530: Can I replace the factory 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy and CD/DVD drive with 12.7mm BluRay drive?

Question: W530: Can I replace the factory 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy and CD/DVD drive with 12.7mm BluRay drive?

I'm thinking about replacing the factory CD/DVD drive that came with my W530 and lives in the stock 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy, with a 12.7mm slim BluRay burner (say something like this Panasonic UJ-265). Since the thickness matches, I believe this is possible.

So, can the factory Ultrabay caddy be removed and completely replaced with a fixed SATA BD drive like this?

If so, is there a SATA cable problem? In other words, do I need a SATA-to-SlimlineSATA adapter, both for data and power, such as this item (which is shown on the same Amazon page as the UJ-265)?

Has anybody done this? Do you have any suggestions and/or recommendations I haven't thought of?

thanks for any help or guidance you can provide.

Preferred Solution: W530: Can I replace the factory 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy and CD/DVD drive with 12.7mm BluRay drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: W530: Can I replace the factory 12.7mm Ultrabay caddy and CD/DVD drive with 12.7mm BluRay drive?

The connector looks right. If I were GUESSING, I would say that it will probably work, but it won't fit into the mechanism that locks the drive in place.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the ultrabay hdd caddy so I can move the existing 500GB drive into the ultrabay and fit a SSD? Also is there a way of still using the ultrabay DVD drive through a USB caddy/housing?

Hi,I have removed the DVD from the Ultra Bay & installed a 2nd Hard Drive for extra storage etc.Every so often, & more often than not, it ejects itself. The only method to get it back is to close lid into standby mode & open again.Sometimes it happens on resume from standby as well..? Any ideas on what can be causing this? I had a W510 before & it did similar things. I have also spokne to someone else who had the same type of issues.I think on the W510 (win7), it used to ask to be ejected, whereas on this W530 (win8) it ejects it on its own... Maybe there is a setting to say never eject...?

Answer:W530 UltraBay Caddy

It is an old issue I don't believe the root cause has ever been identified.  Search for "thinkpad ultrabay eject error" on google and you'll see what I mean. I don't recall ever seeing a definitive solution.

I bought a new HD and installed it into my IBM ThinkPad A30. More room: yay! Then I bought an Ultrabay caddy and put my old drive into it and installed it into the laptop. Now my old drive shows up as my D: drive. And now I want to format the old drive. But Windows (XP Pro) tells me, "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive and make sure that no other window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting the drive again." Hmm. So then I tried this: 1. Go to [Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management].2. Right-Click the disk and select Format. ...and Windows said, "The volume goblinbox (D Primary partition is currently in use. To force the format, click Yes."Can I force the format and still have the D: drive work as a secondary drive, or will the thing disappear? Comments appreciated. Cheers,Mush

Answer:Ultrabay HD Caddy - formatting D: drive OK?

Yes you can force the Format and Yes the drive will still work as the secondary. Just make absolutely certain that you've selected the correct drive and not the primary drive's secondary partition. A possible reason you're having difficulties is that your index service is probably accessing the drive.

I purchased a W530 and immediatly swapped out the included hard drive for an SSD. I also purchased the drive bay adapter and planned on moving that original drive to it, but it did not come with a drive caddy. If the drive bay does not come with an extra one, and hard drives do not come with them.... why was it not included? Where do I purchase one? Does it need those rubber sides that are now around the SSD?

Well, I noticed the price, 189.99...I talked to a sales rep on chat and said I could not buy just the hard drive caddy. Lenovo, I am very dissapointed in you. How dare you sell the caddy and the HD at that price. You claim we could buy the accessories, yet we can not purchase a caddy seperately. Way to go...I hope there are plans to change this, extremely dissapointed. hi iamtheecho,

Sorry to hear that you were not able to buy that product directly from Lenovo. My guess is that the HDD and the HDD caddy are bundled and are not sold separately.

But since you have a 9.5mm tray-in Ultrabay ODD, you can buy this HDD caddy as an alternative:

I received the caddy from newmodeus and I popped in the hdd, which came with W520 primary bay, into the ultrabay.everything is running fine, but the speed in HWINFO64 is shown as 1.5Gb/s. however the HDD itself support SATA II, which is supposed to be 3.0Gb/s. anything wrong with my setup or caddy? I emailed the newmodeus and the replied me that "Our caddy has a pass-through SATA connection. It will support the maximum speed your optical drive controller will support". any thought on this? Thanks

Answer:Hard drive in Ultrabay Caddy shows 1.5Gb/s

Tolgcc: The hard drive caddies are nothing more than a fancy version of a cable that connects the drive to the computer. If the drive is not operating at fast speeds, probably best to go troubleshooting somewhere else, although I don't really know where to suggest. I have an Intel application on my computer called "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" - that displays the SATA transfer speed of the disc - you might want to have a look at that application, and also check to make sure you have the latest version of that application and the driver associated with it. The easiest way to get it is to use the Lenovo System Update tool. Michael

Hi, I bought a SSD drive for the internal bay and would like to use the factory drive with the ultrabay caddy. There are several products which offers either SATA II or SATA III. Is the standard drive capable using the extra speed up to 6 Gbit/s? I thought about this one:http://www.amazon.de/Module-Adapter-Caddy-Lenovo-T420i/dp/B00718M8PO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=13620859... My T430 isn't mentioned in the description but I've read the 12.7mm should fit without any gap.

Few are SATA III and its the interface only you'll won't see the speeds of 6GB other than possibly the odd burst of data peaking a bit higher. Its drive specific. However, you still should get a SATA III caddy for it. I did for mine and the price is the same anyway. Note your height though is 430 compatible!!! Assume nothing be certain it is compatible.

Just recieved my new Thinkpad W530. I want to swap the optical drive with a caddy with a second HDD. Problem is I canīt get the optical drive out of the laptop. I push the unlock switch and as I hold this I push the release button. I then hear that the drive loosens, but I only can push it out slightly (about 2-3 mm). Nothing happens if I keep pushing the release. Have also tried to pull the drive out, but it wont move. I dont want to use to much force as Iīm afraid I will destroy something. When I push it back in it slides nicely into position and I can hear the "click" sound that locks it in place..... Is there a screw or something I have overseen? Anyone that has experienced the same problem and have a solution?

Answer:Not able to remove ultrabay/optical drive on W530

From your description, I am not sure if you removed the screw from the bottom of the machine.  On the bottom of the W530 there is a screw that is about 6 mm from the edge, near the back of the optical drive bay.  That screw is to prevent the ultrabay/optical drive from becoming unlocked accidentally.  This screw needs to be removed.  Then, there is a sliding switch near where the screw was, which unlocks the ultrabay/optical drive.  Slide that switch and the drive should pop loose a little, and can then be pulled out completely.  I recommend doing all of this while the machine is powered OFF and with the battery removed, just to be careful. I have done this several times while exchanging hard drives.  It should be very easy, so if it is not then something is wrong.  You may want to get the hardware maintenance manual from support.lenovo.com for your machine, which gives diagrams for basically anything you can do to this machine. Good luckJohnV474

Lots of question about the Ultrabay SSD/HD Adapters on the Thinkpad W530. Are the Ultrabay Hard Drive Adapters SATA 2 or SATA 3 specific?Or are the Ultrabay Hard Drive Adapters just a connector (similar to like an ethernet cord) and what really matters is the HDD (or SSD) and the Laptop? On the W530 User Guide (Page 94)  [http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t530_t530i_w530_ug_en.pdf]  it says to buy the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (P/N 43N3428) but this doesn't even exist on the Lenovo product page.  The closest thing i can find to the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (P/N 43N3428) is 43N3412 and it's the same product name, so i'm assuming that this works too.  Is that what everyone else is using?  And will it work at SATA 3.0 at 6.0 Gbs? Also, the User Guide also says that the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (P/N 43N3428) can only support 7 mm HDDs and not 7mm SSDs.  Then, how come the 43N3412 product description says it can support SSDs? I saw Adapters similar to 43N3412 and it even references the Part number 43N3412 on Amazon.  Anyone ever try this?http://www.amazon.com/LotFancy-Adapter-ThinkPad-UltraBase-43N3412/dp/B0055X071O/ref=pd_cp_pc_0 Will it perform, as well as the Lenovo version? According to the User Guide, there's also a 12.7mm version of the Ultrabay HDD/SSD Adapter.I am leaning toward the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Ad... Answer:W530 - Question about Ultrabay Hard Drive Adapter

Not sure if this helps, but I bought this caddy for my W530. It works in SATA 3 mode with the SATA 3 drive I put in it. The drive is held in place via screws through the bottom of the caddy. No rails or special mounting hardware needed. The necessary screws were included with the caddy. The drive I installed was a 9.5mm height, though the caddy will accommodate a 12.5mm drive. My only very minor complaint is the caddy has a blue activity LED that's a bit on the bright side and doesn't mesh well with the softer green and amber tones of the other LEDs on the W530. Aside from that it seems well made and does not look like an aftermarket addition.

My external hard drive went bad. I would like to replace it in its caddy, which I like. But I notice when I took the HD out of the caddy, that there are no actual connections. There is a metal area on the side of the hard drive which I presume is a contact. I don't recall seeing this "contact" on other hard drives.
Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?
Many thanks for advice or links.

To add a second drive in the optical bay, you need to buy an Ultrabay Adapter II for current T-pad models.  Some vendors refer to it as a "caddy," but it is an adapter. Don't know what vendors you can access in the Great White North.  Suggest you Google for Lenovo Ultrabay Adapter III.

Answer:Replace hard drive with SSD on W530?

I did the same upgrade myself about 1 1/2 years ago, replacing my factory 512GB spinner with a 500GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD in my own W530.  Since then I've added SSD's as a second drive to other M93p desktop machines I've customized for friends and family, picking the newer Samsung 850 Pro in a 256GB size (regaining the factory 1TB spinner for "data").

In the case of the W530 I chose to reinstall windows 7 Pro x64 from scratch, using a retail Windows Installation DVD.  I never use "factory recovery partitions" and recovery media, as I never retain those "recovery partitions".  I always do my own ongoing regular schedulard "system image" backups using Macrium Reflect.  I install of of the latest versions of Lenovo-provided software and drivers directly downloaded from their software/drivers download site into my newly from-scratch installed Windows.

I don't use Optimus at all in my W530, but rather have "discrete graphics" selected to use the K1000m exclusively. So I use the latest retail nVidia graphics drivers downloaded from their site, not anything from Lenovo for graphics.  I have no interest in the built-in Intel HD Graphics.

As far as the physical swap of the new SSD for the old spinner on the W530, my first attempts were unsuccessful because I didn't realize what the Lenovo maintenance manual was trying to convey with its pictures showing some type of difference between the "side rail orientation" when applied to the sides of... I've had my T400 since November and am loving it (other than the big honkin' dead pixel, but luckily it's along the very left edge of the screen),. However, the right side of the keyboard where the optical drive is flexes quite a bit with pressure (I'm a heavy click-clacker). I was wondering if Lenovo or some other company offers a solid plastic "shim" so to speak that could slide into the Ultrabay and provide a bit more rigidity. Anyone know?

i am assuming you are using a perforated backplate keyboard? if that is the case, it would be far easier just to get the solid plate backplate design.

Hi everyone, Over the years this forum has proven invaluable to me, and I try hard not to burden it with questions already asked or requests for information easily discovered elsewhere. However, although I've read similar questions here, and looked extensively elsewhere, I can't find the answer to my question. Apologies in advance if I've overlooked something. I have a W530 (shipped originally with a 7mm HDD, and changed years ago to a 830 SSD), and I've just installed a new 840 EVO 1TB SSD in the primary bay. In doing so I discovered that the 830 SSD previously installed was installed only with the rubber rails, and without any drive tray (long story). God only knows where that drive tray (terminology question: tray or caddy?) is, and presumably he's getting more urgent requests for information. I've looked in various places for a replacement from the manufacturer (Lenovo Parts Lookup, FRU/CRU listings, Specs) and from aftermarket suppliers (newmodeus) for a tray represented as compatible with the W530 primary drive bay. So, I have two questions: Is it safe to use ONLY the rubber rails to operate a 7mm 840 EVO SSD? Granted, the 830 SSD ran for years without noticeable issues with only the rubber rails, but that's a study with sample size n=1. Are there heat or other issues (stability in port) for which the tray is intended to provide a solution for a SSD? I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... so when i put a bluray disk in, nothings happens. i tried to play it through windows media player and it won't accept the file. can anyone help me fix this problem?

Answer:bluray drive cannot read bluray disks.

Hi izanagi, Welcome to SevenForums.

Windows Media Player will not play blu-ray discs. You will need a bluray player software like Cyberlink Power DVD, Corel's WinDVD, Arcsoft's Total Media Theatre, Nero Media suite Platinum to mention a few.

But the most important part is whether your system starting from the BD ROM drive to the monitor - the entire chain including your display adapter is HDCP compliant.

Download Cyberlink's BD & 3D Advisor from CyberLink Blu-ray Disc Support run it and check your system.

How to obtain the four screws that secure the caddy to the laptop body?
(Not the screws that keep the HDD inside the caddy.)
Does anyone know the specification for these screws, and where I can buy them?

Hi all-I like my Lenovo G555, but wanted a bigger drive. Got a Seagate Momentus XT 500Gb and put it in an external enclosure.  I ran the Seagate discWizaard (rebranded Acronis) and left it set to auto create the drive structure during the clone.  My original factory drive had a C partition set to 105 Gb and a D partition set to 29 Gb plus a hidden partition and some stray unused space (?).  Now after the clone I see a 328 Gb partition and a 91 Gb partition on the new drive.  I am wondering if I should re-run the clone and set the Acronis software to custom so that it doesn't upsize the hidden partition. As it is it looks like I am losing a fair amount of storage space to the hidden partition.  I did see that when left to auto it would add generous amounts of space to each partition based on the total drive capacity.

Answer:Cloned factory drive with Acronis True Image and have partition questions before I replace

hi lenuttocan you check if you have any unallocated space? also, try one key recover button, if it works, i believe you won't need to re-clone.

This is a newer build with a Liteon Bluray burner. I don't know when this happened but when I clicked on "computer" the bluray drive name had changed from "BD-RE Drive (D)" to "BD-RE Drive (R) Audio CD" (The drive name change of D to R is my doing, I tried un/reinstalling the drive many times and changed the path name as well.) When I open the drive this is what it shows..(see attachment) What are these files and why can I not get rid of them. I have tried everything; burning them out, deleting, forcibly deleting, un/reinstalling drive, etc. They just keep coming back! And when I try to located these files on the system it tells me they are located at (R), which is the drive itself. It doesn't necessarily make the drive fail, but when I insert a disc, be it CD or bluray, autoplay will not start. I have to open and close the drive a couple times and click on "open" in the drives commands before the enclosed CD will be read. Any ideas? This is a new one for me.

Answer:Bluray drive acting like a hard drive?

Hello Liquid69 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

I run into that enough here and generally it's more of a simple annoyance then any real problem. The auto play is set in the Control Panel>Action Center where you select what Windows does for each item whether it will auto run any video or audio upon inserting it a drive, open file location, or ask what you want to do with a prompt.

As for the desktop.ini file that will appear automatically even when creating a new desktop shortcut and will always be seen once a disk has been read. The cda files were present on a disk you had placed in the drive and won't be seen once you go through the Action Center settings there.

Sometimes going back and forth between setting the audio cd or dvd setting to ask what to do to automatically play will clean that up.

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

My primary HDD was failing so I backed it up and replaced it with a larger 1TB drive.  After reinstalling everything the new drive is displaying the same size as my old drive and the extra space available is unallocated.  I can allocate it as
a separate drive but I find that annoying and would prefer to just have my primary C: drive show up with all of the available space.  I formatted the extra space and made it available separately as drive G hoping that I could EXPAND drive C but that option
is not highlighted as selectable on drive C for some reason.  Should I just live with this extra space or is there a way to easily combine C and the new G space?

I'm planning on upgrading to a larger SSD in my T400. It originally shipped with a 1.8" 64GB Samsung SSD and I'm probably going to upgrade it to a 2.5" 7mm Samsung 840 (non-pro) SSD.

I'm not sure if the current caddy in the T400 is going to fit the new SSD, or if I'll need to purchase the 2.5" caddy. If so, does anyone know the FRU # of the caddy I'll need?

Answer:T400 SSD Upgrade Question Do I need a new drive caddy? My machine shipped with a 1.8" drive.

you would need a normal 2.5 inch hdd caddy. The one that goes into the T60 and T61 will do, and cost like 4 dollars on ebay.

Hi,
I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?
Thank you.

Alright, I have a T510 with a single internal drive. I wish to add a SSD drive and make it my primary drive. I have an Ultrabay and know about the drive adapter for it and plan to use it as the new drive location. My question is how to perform the cloning of the primary drive. I can install the new SSD in the Ultrabay and use software, previously copied to the primary(or backup) drive since the Ultrabay is now used for the SSD so I can't run a CD. The issue is how to clone. I don't wish to buy another external drive just for the cloning software CD. I have an external hard drive that I use for backups. Has anyone cloned a copy of a drive(A) to another drive(B) and then copied it to a new drive(C)? If this is a good idea, it is easy since the CD drive is still available using this method. The end result would be to swap locations of the drives making the SSD the new primary internal drive and the old drive goes to the Ultrabay. Just looking for input.  Thanks for taking the time, Pete

Answer:How to Clone Primary Drive prior to, or after, adding a second drive in Ultrabay

What backup tool do you have? If you backup the primary drive, a good tool like Acronis True Image Home 2013 can restore to the new device without issue. I usually backup to an external USB attached drive, remove the source drive, install the new target drive, boot from the Acronis Recovery DVD, then run a restore to the new target. Easy

So far I have only used 1 TB drives with it.
Is the physical size of a 3Tb drive the same as 1Tb or Tb drives, and will it go into the caddy?
Will a Dell XPS 435MT (i7 920)with Bios 1.1.2 running 64bit Vista SP2 OS be OK with a 3TB drive?
sorry, I can't find how old the PC is : maybe 3 years?

Hi, I have the T400 model.  The hard drive suddenly failed, It won't boot / detect or only boot up 1 out of 10 times.   When it does boot up, I was able to run a test.  The test shows it FAIL the "SMART test".   :-( So, I need to replace the HD.  The problem I have is that I can't no longer create a back up image of the drive, because it is hardware issue.  Whatever is bad is going to copy the bad ones to the new HD.  I don't mind doing the fresh manual install.  However, I don't know how to do restore back to the factory setting type, which it has 2 partitions and one has recovery partition and one for OS.  I can't find the factory recovery disc yet.  However, I have a legal OEM Windows 7 disc with me.  I wonder if I can recover base on that. So, I have 3 main questions. 1.) If I can find my recovery disc, will it restore back to the original 2 partiion settings? 2.) If I cannot find my disc, how do I install and setup like the original setting with Thinkvage .... 3.) How do I "re-"create a set of OS recovery disc again?  I can't find the options on the Start meun - Lenovo Care  or  Maintenance..    THanks

Answer:Restore / Replace New Hard Drive without factory restore disc - T400

Buy the recovery disks from Lenovo. Without an image backup of the drive with Acronis Trueimage. You will be installing everything again and doing all the Windows Updates. It only takes a full day this way. Maybe more on a slower system.T400 eh, which has to be 3 years old at least and 4 posts. Hmm well plenty on the topic if you search. Catch up...

Ok so basically i see dvd drives that replace the optical drive and allow you to put a 2nd hard drive on things like laptops.

The issue is i want one for a desktop as the ones i am finding are too small to fit in one of my desktops. Normally there is more than 1 expansion slot for an additional hard drive on MOST desktops but this isn't the case for mine as i am using a sff model and well the only way to add another hard drive is to take off my optical drive and swap it with some sort of expasion.

Anyone know where to buy one of these for a desktop optical drive as the ones for laptops are smaller

Very confused about what the recommended HDD Caddy for T430 is. (to swap DVD drive with a 2nd HDD)Also, is there a non Lenovo HDD that works with this? 1 TB drive preferred.Thanks.

Answer:Hard Drive Bay (Caddy) and drive for T430

Ultrabay caddies come in two thicknesses, 12.7mm for T430 and T530 (0A65623), and 9.5mm for T430s (43N3412.)

You can buy these from Lenovo or you can get "clone" caddies quite inexpensively on eBay, e.g. 9.5mm Bezel SATA 2nd HDD Hard Drive caddy bay for T400s T500 T410s X200 is $10 for a 9.5mm unit. This is what I have in my T430s. A 9.5mm caddie will fit into your T430 but will leave a small gap at the top. You can search to see what 12.7mm caddies are available.

I haven't tested the clone caddies with HDDs larger than 500GB. There's no reason they won't work. Note that the HDD must be no thicker than the caddy in order to fit physically. Since you have a T430 with 12.7 Ultrabay opening this shouldn't be an issue for you either.

Hi all,I've just bought a icy box caddy and a hard drive to setup for a mate an external back up device. However, my brother has just bought a Lacie external hard-drive and suggests it's better/safer to use/handle than a do-it-yourself caddy & drive as the "proper" external drives better protect and against knocks and stuff.(We don't want to take his kit apart and check as it'll void the warrenty.)What's the score? Is there any truth in this?

Answer:External Hard-drive Vs Caddy & drive???

No, an external drive is just as at risk as a drive in a caddy.I myself prefer the icy box rather than an external drive for the simple reason that you can change the disk in side and internal disks are cheaper than external. Also, is good for when when friends need to retrieve their from dead computers that they haven't backed-up!

Hello, Sorry for all the pestering, but I was hoping that the good people on this forum could help me out with yet another thing. I am looking into buying an ultrabay caddy to stick my hdd for an old notebook into my new T500 (SSD). What is the difference between the first HDD adapter listed on the Lenovo site and the ultrabay III option? And is there any way someone can confirm that this would be a genuine purchase? http://cgi.ebay.com/2nd-hard-HDD-Caddy-Adapter-For-Thinkpad-T400-T500-W500_W0QQitemZ360198319171QQcm...

Answer:T500 Ultrabay Caddy

The e-bay one doesn't look right. Pull out your DVD drive - there is a piece of plastic that sticks out at the end of the drive that slipps into the machine. My ulatrabay slim adapter III also has that.  The version II was designed for T400/T500, version III has a slightly different bezel shape to match the T400s exactly. It looks/works fine in my T400 - just angled a bit rather than flat.  Not sure what the first one on the lenovo site is.

Hi, I recently purchased a W530 with a hard drive bay and I've been experiencing trouble with the bay. The problem is that there is no mechanism in the drive bay to keep the drive "in bay" - i.e. connected. Because of a small gap between the drive and the wall of the bay the drive will slide out of the connector when the laptop is put in the bag vertically. this seems to me like a major design flaw in the drive bay, and I'm wondering if others are experiencing the same issue and know about any workarounds.

I bought myself a SATA hard drive caddy off ebay (yes, a knockoff one) and put it into the ultrabay with an SSD in it (the plan was to clone my current drive to the SSD and then put the SSD in the proper drive slot afterwards). The caddy went in fine, but now it just will not come out. I push the unlock switch over and try to push the second switch up but it's completely jammed in there.. So my first plan was to take the keyboard off and just take a look, to see if there was anything obviously wrong. That plan was stopped when one of the screws holding the keyboard in place was in far too tight, and they are really small screws. I didn't want to attempt any further for fear of rounding off the screw head. So at this point I'm probably going to have to send it back off to Lenovo and have them dismantle the laptop to get this thing out. Before I do that, does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on what could be done?

Answer:HDD caddy jammed in Ultrabay. T510.

Did the Ultrabay Adapter (It's not a caddy!) have the black ejection stub next to the SATA connectors?  If not, it is an Ultrabay II, not III.   The 500-520 series needs that stub in order for the eject mechanism to push the adapter out.  Also, if it is a 9.5mm adapter, the SSD may be sticking up and blocking the ejection.  Do you have a link to show what you got as an adapter?  If the SSD is not fasteneed down, when the laptop is turned upside down to work the eject buttons, it can block the eject movement. If you can work those buttons with it right side up, it might come loose.

Hi, I just ordered my T430 and waiting for delivery. I was wondering if it is possible to use built-in HDD and add a second HDD with UltraBay or HDD Caddy for storage and programs and also add a mSATA SSD for OS installation.3 Hard Drives on a laptop is what I am looking for. I am a heavy VMware user and need to install separate VMs to separate HDDs. If this is possible, is it advisable? Also I would be glad if you can give me some advice with the drives. I want to install a new, faster HDD in place of the one with my T61 (7659D22) came and mount the original system HDD in an UltraBay caddy. The no-name caddy I have looks a little different from the picture in the manual for the genuine 40Y8746: it has little plastic protrusions under which the drive screws might fit once the drive has been slid forward far enough for the connectors to mate. Unfortunately, the only way I can get the connectors to mate is if I insert the HDD at an angle (as shown in the 40Y9746 instructions), but then the plastic protrusions foul the screw heads and I cannot press the drive flat down into the caddy. Which would be better? Trim those plastic protrusions? Or not use the screws that hold the cover in place over the drive's electronics? -- and maybe dispense with that cover altogether? Or is there something I'm totally overlooking?

Answer:Mounting system HDD in Ultrabay caddy?

did you take the caddy tray off the hdd the hdd when used in the UltraBay does not need the caddy I mean the little metal tray that has 4 screws & 2 rubber rails

Hi!  I have been looking for a second hard disk caddy suitable for the R50E and have found an advert for one which says it is compatible with the R50E and i have also seen info to the contrary that says it can't be done.  has anyone tried this with an R50E and got it to work ? i am not fussed if i cannot do a hot swap. Regards, Andy.

Answer:Can i run a second hard disk in an R50E using an ultrabay caddy ?

you would need the ultrabay enhanced caddy not the ultrabay slim caddy which is for the T series... but other than that i don't see why it shouldn't work....

I bought the official Lenovo Ultrabay IV caddy for my T440p but apparently I need a spacer to ensure the HDD does not move around in it. Currently there's a 3mm gap on all sides of the HDD. Can someone point me in the right direction? The HDD is a Travelstar 7K1000, so it's exactly the right size for the caddy (2.5", 9.5mm). I tried the plastic surround from the main drive bay, but even that allows a slight bit of movement, which is obviously a no-no for a mechanical drive. I'm at a loss what I'm supposed to use, short of literally jamming some strips of plastic in the gaps.

Answer:T440p Ultrabay caddy HDD rails/spacer

Great hdd you've got.  Just use some dual sided tape and your problem is solved.  Snag a small roll for a buck at the dollar store.  More importantly, why did you spend $70 on the "official" Lenovo caddy when they are $9 on ebay?

Hey, I have the Lenovo Y510P with dual GPU and an SSD. I was wondering if i can take out the second GPU (the one in the UltraBay) and replace it with an SSD caddy to make an upgrade to the storage. Because my second GPU doesn't worth the while, the computer hits up a lot with the SLI enabled and crashes all the time while playing games. Thanks in advance,Tal.

Answer:Y510P Dual GPU, can i change the UltraBay to SSD caddy?

hi Tal,

Adding an SSD via an HDD caddy on the Y510p is definitely possible as another user have tried this already in this thread (note that if the drive doesn't get detected, you may need to toggle the switch pin in the caddy).

Alternatively, if Y510p came with a 1TB+24GB M.2 (NGFF) SSD, then you can replace the M.2 SSD into a bigger capacity (like this item).

Let me know if this works for you.

Regards

Hi, guys,

I just received and installed this Ultrabay caddy:

cheap and good UB caddy

It holds the disk very securely, and it fits flush, no gaps, matches the color of the Thinkpad, and has a nice little blue LED activity light. All of this for $12 shipped. I didn't bother to bid, just clicked "buy it now". They shipped it immediately.

I also own the Lenovo version, which has the gap, and doesn't hold the disk as firmly.

There is no need to spend $60+ on a caddy in my view. Many thanks to @OrElm for the heads up!

Does anyone have a Blueray drive yet?

I was recently looking at an internal BR drive for my PC, but the price tag of Ģ699 put me off.

I am curious about them though, especially for use with my HD tv.

Anyone got one yet or used one?

I've got an odd problem with the USB 3.0 ports on my W530.  I'm using the latest drivers. If I plug a USB 3.0 drive (tested with WD and Segate portable portable drives) into a USB 3.0 port Windows does not detect it.  However, if I then plug in a USB 2.0 flash drive into the other USB 3.0 port, Windows will detect both drives. If I boot up with the USB 3 HD plugged in with nothing in the other USB 3.0 port, Windows detects the drive without issue. No issues when using the USB 2.0 ports. I'm guessing this is a power saving issue, but I cannot figure out what to do.  I called Lenovo support and they asked me to send my machine in, which is not going to happen as I cannot be without the machine for a few days.

Answer:W530, USB 3 drive requires USB 2 drive inserted

Have you tried deleting the drivers for that drive, rebooting and then plugging the drive in? Somebody with a custom image had a similar problem and I've had that issue with Dell - in my case it was fixed by reinstalling the drivers.

You can get the FRU #42T2617 or #43N3295 BlueRay Combo for the Ultrabay, both of which I believe are compatible with the W510.

When I first installed Windows 8 on my pc, it was working fine. The DVD drive and Bluray booted just fine. I removed the Bluray drive later to use in another PC. The reviews are good, but they say it doesn't come with software.

What software do I have to buy to use this drive?

Also, if I connect it to the 6g port, would the performance be better?

Thanks,

Answer:Bluray drive question

I've purchased two blue-ray burners (each for a different PC) and in BOTH cases, they came with burning software.

Unless you specifically want that product, I would look around for one that comes with software.

been looking to get a blueray drive but got a few questions.1. looking at this one, can I just unmount my current dvd drive and put this bluray drive in its place? will this bluray drive also read/write dvds/cds? Will it use the same power connecter (from my power supply) and sata cable that my dvd drive is using?http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7462667&CatId=36342. With the new UHD 4k technology, will bluray soon be obsolete, or can bluray produce more than 1080p?

Answer:would this bluray drive be good for me?

Assuming your PC takes a standard SATA drive then it will work fine and will burn as well as write. Also note that as far as I'm aware you will need special software to play back Bluray discs and this costs money - An example of this would be Cyberlink PowerDVD.  Most standard DVD playback software will not work with Bluray discs. As far as your second question goes - I'd say that optical media is already out of date - With the advent of services like Netflix and Spotify - I can't actually think of the last time I played/bought a DVD or CD and I've already ripped my existing DVDs to a PC to make it easier to access them.

Recently ordered a new laptop and tried to order one with a Bluray. The only optical available on new build laptops is a CD/DVDRW.Why is HP eliminating the Bluray drive as an option ?

Answer:Bluray optical drive

Blu-Ray has been a bit of a disappointment in the market. The industry required the purchase of proprietary software to play Blu-Ray movies and in addition the whole need for optical drives has kind of gone by the wayside. You can download Blu-Ray quality content from online. The public never saw much value added from Blu-Ray quality movies as opposed to DVD quality. Smart TVs took away the need to have a computer play entertainment media. The large storage capacity of Blu-Ray disks became unneeded as inexpensive usb thumb drives became available and storage moved to the cloud.  You can install a generic Blu-Ray disk in place of the DVD burner if you really need a Blu-Ray player as part of your laptop. Post back if you need help with that.

Hi everybody! I just bought a third party bay caddy and placed my lenovo shipped HDD in the caddy after replacing it with a SSD. When I insert the caddy into the bay my computer makes no response. I have searched the forums and cant find this problem, so am I missing an installation step oris it likely there is a caddy problem?

Answer:W530 caddy / bay installation?

Hey Dansapien,

I would guess it is a caddy problem being as they don't come with software or drivers. I would assume that the HDD without the Caddy shows up in BIOS and works fine which if is the case would just lead me to believe it to  be an issue the caddy connection to laptop.

OK so this is a Sony VGN-AR670 laptop and it's currently the world's only 17"-19" netbook because I have no working optical drive in Windows. Last night I installed Windows 7 64bit Ultimate, I had been using the Win 7 Release Candidate beta without issue, though not sure if 64 bit or 32 bit. I honestly thought it was 64 bit but when I put the 64 but upgrade CD in it gave me an error about not being able to run so I just did a clean install and didn't worry about it. I wish I investigated it more... Anyway Win 7 installed and today when I went to install Office 2007 I noticed there's no CD Drive in My Computer... go to device manager and CD-Rom is listed with an error... I uninstall it and re=scan for hardware changes... it detects the drive as matshita bd-cmb uj-120 and says the software was not successfully installed. Also Mass Storage Controller is listed as "No driver found" but I don't know what that is affecting if anything. I checked Sony's site but they don't support Win 7 for this laptop which I can't imagine as it was a top of the line machine when I got it right before the Win 7 release, always planned on upgrading- got sick otherwise would have done this long ago. Also there are no Vista drivers for this drive, presumably because windows should detect and install it automatically, and it did with the Beta and all though the install- so I don't get why it won't work now.

Any help on finding this driver? I've searched and searched and just get ... Read more

Just in case anyone is wondering about adding a bluray drive to the y500. . .I was able to successfully install a third party 9.5mm bluray drive I bought on ebay. The drive I purchased was a Panasonic UJ242 Bluray combo drive. The ebay link is below. http://www.ebay.com/itm/330661645995?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 After receiving the drive, I unscrewed the small metal mounting attachment from the bluray drive, then I removed the stock cd/dvd drive from the laptop, unscrewed the black plastic mounting piece, took off the front bezel, and attached these parts to the new drive. Most 9.5mm tray-load drives have the same mounting holes & bezel attachment fittings. The new drive fits perfectly in the y500. In order for windows to detect the optical drive, I went into the BIOS on startup (hit f2 repetedly) and navigated to the "BOOT" section. From there, make sure the boot device priority is set to read your HDD first. No drivers were necessary for the install. For software, I use Corel WinDVD Pro 11. They have a 30 day free trial too. http://www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4090069&cid=catalog20038&segid=4400002&storeKey...  Hooray for Blu-ray!

Hello,

Due to the latest events and Toshiba agreeing that it's lost the format war, I wonder if it is possible to replace that very-soon-unusable HD DVD drive to something that will be able to read/write upcoming movies WITHOUT loosing the warranty (G40).

Answer:Qosmio G40: HD-DVD -> BluRay drive replacement

That is pity buddy :( but I presume there is nothing to do.
The Qosmio notebook was equipped with this HD DVD drive and if you would like to replace the drive then you have to do this at you own hand?
I think the warranty would not cover such replacements but this is my own opinion. If you have contacted Toshiab for details pelase post is here. . I'm very interesting about this!

Answer:mount my bluray drive on my whs over network?

You can make it a file share, but it's not going to show up as a bluray drive. It'll just show up as like any other file share, but read access only. Plus, if the local computer and the WHS try to access it at the same time, you'll have super slow read times.

Unfortunately my hard drive failed when I was out of town and had to have my family take it in. I had backup files I created with the spotmau program that had both the C and D drive letters. I now only have a C drive listed and am unsure what to do. I am not very experienced with the deep end of the partion stuff. I have been using the laptop for a month now and have transfered as much of the fileinfo that they were able to save. I don,t want to do a restore if it will mess up what I have now but I am concerned that I will not be able to save properly for recovery later. I am trying to get to a point that I can create a hd image to save for the next crisis. I have a 320GB HD in the Laptop and a 500GB external drive That I would like to create the image on and then set to the side for that day when I have to restore to a new HD again. I am looking for some guidance so that I will have the ability to do this stuff myself. The HD hardware is not reliable as you folks probably already know. Even with the warranty it still costs alot of money. Thanks in advance for your help. Beryla

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

Okay, so I bought a new 96gb ssd for my boot drive, and it works great an all, but its a bit slow, so I thought that I would just buy one of those cd-bay replacement caddies and put a hard drive in there. It is detected, it does fit, and there is a led indicator that shows that its powered, but after maybe 5 minutes of continuous use (i.e. formatting, transferring files), it shuts off; disappears from the face of my computer saying anything transferred might not have saved correctly and I may have lost some data. However, I do notice two things, one is that it still spins (so there must be power, right?) and secondly the HDD works completely fine via USB.  There are then two solutions that I have found that get it back to being able to be detected (none of which last more than 5 minutes of use, so that doesn't solve the problem). One is to restart with the HDD out and plug it in when the computer is booted up. The other is to take it out, plug it into a SATA to USB adapter and access it, and put it back in the caddy and it will detect.  I'm pretty sure of the following: it is not because of power issues, as I can run it via usb it is not the hard drive; it works fine in the main hdd tray it is not because my ultrabay is broken; my CD-RW works fineHere are my specs:Lenovo T61P Core2 Duo @ 2.4Windows XP 32-bit 3gb ramKingston V+100 SSD @ 96gbFujitsu 160gb 5400 HDD(came with laptop)eBay knockoff hdd caddy  In short, how do I test out if its my caddy...
