Trackpoint "Press to Click" causes erratic clicking and movement

Question: Trackpoint "Press to Click" causes erratic clicking and movement

For the longest time I thought the erratic clicking on my W530 was because of my peeled trackpad sticker, but I only figured out today that it was occurring because I had enabled Press to Click on my trackpoint. It causes unwarranted, extremely rapid clicking, almost competing with autoclicking scripts, and renders the trackpoint immobile while the clicking occurs. This is on a keyboard given to me very recently (~2 months ago) as a replacement on request by IBM ESC.I use the trackpoint extremely frequently; almost all of the mouse movement I require is performed on it in comparison to the trackpad, so perhaps there had been some wear on it after all that time.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I love my W530, purchased November 2013, other than the trackpoint problem that has cropped up. At first it would only happen once in a while (fixed with a restart) but now it happens upon startup.  Disabling the trackpoint fixes the problem, but I would like to use it. Also, when I move the mouse pointer to the bottom-left corner in normal destop mode and right-click to bring up the Win8 menu thing, it won't come up and the mouse simply moves away from the corner 1mm, and keeps moving away from the corner until it is clear of the little-metro-preview-box and windows-key/x no longer brings up the menu either. I will reformat when I get home on Saturday. Any advice you can offer in the meantime would be apprietiated.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

On my first generation x1 carbon, I am able to use my trackpoint's press-to-click feature on Windows 8.1. I recently bought 3rd generation x1 carbon, but the Ultranav tab in the mouse setting has been changed to trackpad tab and it does not have press-to-click feature at all!! It's same windows 8.1.. I am not sure what the problem is. Could anyone help??

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

My mouse began moving very erratically recently. When the problem began, I supposed that it may have been a driver problem because I had just upgraded to WIN7 64-bit. However, the problem cropped up after about a week of flawless operation. I ran a thorough scan using Avast, but that didn't solve the issue, so I re-installed WIN7 from scratch. The mouse still moves erratically, but less so than before. Prior to the re-install, the mouse pointer moved very quickly, so quickly that I had a lot of difficulty even clicking on anything, but now it seems more docile, jumping only a few inches at a time every few seconds.

I appreciate whatever help you can provide.

P.S. I'm using a 64-bit OS (which I have the disc media for), so I didn't run GMER, only DDS.

On my wife's Sony laptop, while she types into Outlook the cursor sometimes suddenly jumps to another location in the email. I'm assuming its a software issue. Any suggestions?

Answer:Erratic cursor movement

It could also be a light issue. What type of mouse is your wife using? If it is an Optical mouse (red light at bottom), then check to see if there is a table lamp near the mouse.Sometimes the light fall on the mouse in just a certain angle, and it triggers the mouse tracking. Then you get the cursor jumping around effect. If you do not use a mouse with the laptop, then some of your keys might get stuck.(Probably Tab and/or Shift.)Press those keys a couple of times (separately and simultaneously) and see if the jumping stops. If this doesn't help, it may very well be a software issue. In that case, I suggest that a computer technician take a look.

It will also open various windows. When I try to move it again it continues on with the erratic movements. I can not figure out what is triggering this, or if I have some kind of virus. Usually I hit escape a couple of times and it goes back to normal. Any ideas?

Hi, I have a brand new Dell mouse, WM326, and right out of the box it has extremely erratic movement on the screen.  The cursor moves perfectly with the touchpad and the USB ports all work fine with other devices. I've tried all the ports, changing the battery, and restarting the computer with no success. I've also plugged the mouse into a desktop computer and it is still erratic. My laptop is an Inspiron 15 3000 Series, if that matters. Since I cant find any information on this product online, what steps should I take to either resolve this or get a replacement that will work?

My Razer mouse has started acting up on me and I cannot figure out what is causing it. Two previous mice have fallen into the same trap. It is a mystery. Cursor movement is jittery in spots, slightly difficult to follow in a straight line, and has a tendency to lean in a rightward direction.

The methods I've tried to resolve this issue:
1) thinking it was dust related, I've gently got after the lens with a can of compressed air
2) swapped USB ports
3) moved mouse to a laser mousepad
4) (Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Mouse>Pointer Options) changed Motion & enhanced pointer precision settings
5) reinstall system to factory condition

None of the above changed anything. Windows Update is fully updated and I do wonder if the problem is related, or if there is a conflict between drivers. When I enter safemode, the mouse movement is buttery smooth!

I am going to post some screenshots related to my mouse to see if anyone can detect anything ususual. Will post more screens if needed.

1) Troubleshooting hardware

2) HID mouse?

3) Razer mouse

4) Razer Synapse (additional mouse settings)

Answer:Help w/erratic mouse movement??

There is a possibility that the mouse is defective. To test this you try the mouse on another system at another location (different tabletop/mousepad).

There is a possibility that the Razor driver or your installation is bad. To test this completely uninstall the mouse, download a new driver file (check version info carefully), and then do a 2 part installation:
Plug the mouse in an let Windows install it's generic mouse driver. Use it like that for a while - do the problems persist? (If Windows automatically installs the old Razor driver then you did not "completely" uninstall it)
Then install the Razor driver. If the problems persist then try a different, older driver for that mouse.
Also: clean the mouse laser lens with a Q-tip dipped in warm water. Do not use detergent, window cleaners using ammonia, solvents like alcohol. Just warm, clean water. All of the above can leave a thin film or distort the lens.

Alright, I've been having a semi-intermittent problem with my mouse. My mouse seems to be moving randomly around the screen without the cursor actually moving. The best example of this would be while playing solitaire. When I load the game, some cards start to blink rapidly as if I had moved my mouse over them. I can still play the game simple enough, but the cards keep blinking.
I had originally though this was a problem with my solitaire program, but when I loaded up Mass Effect, my camera started to move erraticly while in game. It is fine when I'm in the menus, but when I'm trying to control my character, it moves to random angles. Oddly enough, holding down the left and right mouse button puts the game in free-look mode and I can move the camera around fine. As soon as I let go of the buttons, however, its buggy again.
I am running a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 that I've tried using both USB and PS2 connections. I am running Windows Vista 32-bit and am using the newest versions of my video card drivers and mouse drivers. I've looked around a few forums, but haven't found a problem exactally like mine. Any help would be appreciated.

I just barely reinstalled my Windows 7 computer, and have transferred my files back to my computer from an external hard drive. I decided to sort and delete unused files, when eventually my mouse movement started to move very erratic.

Moving to the left seems to cover less ground, while moving to the right seems to work normally. Up and down has the same effects as left movement, which is why moving to the right isn't always smooth or perfect.

I am using a wired Razer Deathadder mouse (left handed), and have the correct drivers installed. I have restarted the computer but I still have the same symptoms! This movement is very annoying, and I'd like to know what is causing it.

So i have a Sony Vaio laptop, windows 7 that has been ok-ish for 2+ years.

the when i was watching a movie the cursor started to very slightly move just so the play-stop buttons came up. then after about 20 minutes the movement became more and more erratic and clicking on almost everything.

the touch-pad became unresponsive but at first was moving in the opposite way to my finger movements and then completely unresponsive. (normal mouse still works but is barley usable)
I've updated drivers, but cant turn off the track pad as there is no driver for it that i can find, and i have uninstalled Vaio care.

Any solution or ideas because im stumped?

EDIT: disabled touch pad. Problem solved.

Currently running Windows 10, been completely fine so far. I have the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro.

Just today after browsing through some anime sites, my mouse started to behave strangely. Occasionally the cursor just jumps around randomly for about a half a second, usually localized to a general area where the cursor was before. This is not tied to typing or anything else as far as I can see (maybe loading?).

I don't recall downloading anything from the sites. I've confirmed that my mouse is not the issue (it happens when unplugged). I restored my PC to the restore point two days ago (my last windows update). Any help would be appreciated.

I am having major problems with the mouse.

The cursor's movement is erratic when using the mouse and it is almost impossible to get it to move where it needs to go. It appears as if the mouse and cursor are fighting eash other. The cursor mainly wants to go on to the left ahnd side of the screen which makes it difficult to do almost anything .

I am running XP and have tried a number of different mice - including P/S 2 and USB. I have reformatted the hard drive - rather drastic I know but wasn't sure it was an XP problem. I have run virus scans with Kaspersky 7.0 - and found nothing.

This is making the computer almost unusable so I would welocme any suggestion

Hi everyone!

I'm not computer savvy so please be patient with me.

As the topic name implies, my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop has extremely erratic cpu usage with basically everything. When idle, it sits at around 8% or so, but if i move my mouse cursor, it will jump up to maybe 30-50% (I've seen it go higher with just mouse movement). When opening applications such as Google Chrome, Malwarebytes, etc it sometimes goes up to 100%. Because of this, my computer is unbearably slow.

OS: Vista

Here's what I tried:

1) Updated all recommended drivers from dell support website

2) Windows Error-check on my C hard drive

3) Windows Disk-Cleanup

4) ran AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy to look for bugs. AVG came up negative with the viruses, Malwarebytes found no threats, Spybot found like 200 things and I told it to remove them.

5) ran CCleaner to clear registry and temp files.

6) defrag

After all of this, my CPU usage is still erratic. I'm not sure what else to try.

I've had this computer for a long time and this has been a problem for this computer for years. It's what prompted me to buy a new laptop, but i still want to use this one for school as it's pretty compact. Help me save my computer!!

Any help is greatly appreciated. :D

I currently have a dual boot setup with Windows 7 Pro 64 and XUbuntu 64 bit XFCE desktop. On random occasions, the mouse pointer will begin to float and or will not stay positioned on the spot selected.  This occurs with or without an external mouse attached.  The track pointer will not control the mouse and neither the left nor right keys just below the keyboard function.  The drifting will stop sometimes when the center key at the bottom of the keyboard is pressed. The touchpad and its keys seem to work correctly.  I have turned off both of these in the BIOS and have not had any problems.  It seems to me that the problem may be with the keyboard. Any body have any experience with this sort of problem?

Hi,

I recently made a thread in the "Am I infected? What do I do now?" forum and Broni told me to come here. Here is the link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/495027/erratic-cpu-usage-spikes-during-mouse-movement-and-every-application/page-3

I was looking at process explorer while I was watching videos on youtube and the CPU usage will bounce around between 60-100. If i click on a different tab without any streaming videos or anyting, CPU will bounc around 30-60%. When I'm idle, CPU will erratically bounce around between 2-14% and will periodically be punctuated by instances where CPU usage shoots up to 50+%. Moving my mouse with just Chrome and Process Explorer open will make the CPU jump to ~30%. Despite all this, the things Broni helped me with have really improved my computer. Booting up the computer is acceptable now and i can actually type in gchat without waiting for my computer to catch up with my fingers. However, it still feels like something is off as my computer can't watch videos without frequent stuttering and these jumps in cpu usage just seem outrageous.

Here is what I've tried on my own prior to coming here:

1) Updated all recommended drivers from dell support website
2) Windows Error-check on my C hard drive
3) Windows Disk-Cleanup
4) ran AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy to look for bugs. AVG came up negative with the viruses, Malwarebytes found no threats, Spybot found like 200 things ... Read more

Hi - I buy Lenovos because of their trackpoint.  My most recent Lenovo is an X1 Carbon.  I was much surprised to note that the X1 appears to be the first ThinkPad that will no longer allow me to turn off the touchpad from the Mouse Settings.  Never mind - I disabled it for good in the BIOS.  (I would like to have the Mouse Settings back because I occasionally allow touchpad users on my laptop and they simply cannot cope.) Anyway, from day #1 of ownership of this laptop, I noticed some very odd behaviour of the trackpoint:  It simply "wanders off".  It likes the left margin a lot, and the top left corner still more.  It is possible to force the cursor out of this position (by pushing hard against the trackpoint) but as soon as I let go of the trackpoint again, it wanders back. Thing is, the problem will go away after a while.  "a while" may be anything between 10 and 60 secs.  I thought it might be a h/w bug - the trackpoint perhaps being "stuck" and needing to relax - but it occurs so often that I am more inclined to thing it is a driver bug. I believe to be on the latest driver 19.3.4.99 so consider this post as a heads-up - something is still not quite right here. PS:  I am not a geat fan of reboots.  So I have disabled Updates on my Win10Pro.  I was most recently forced into a reboot (first time in 3 months or so) because whenever I clicked the middle mouse button, my screen would turn off.&nbs... Hello, on my ThinkPad Yoga (version 03/2015) with Win10 pro (latest updates installed) the Trackpoint randomly stops to move the cursor. The issue can be present right after booting or occur anytime, even running the device multiple hours without experiencing any problems is not uncommon. However, the three buttons still work properly when pressed. The same holds for the touchpad, an external mouse and any input via touchscreen (finger and pen). So, it is really "just" about the red rubber point itself.Sometimes suspending to RAM solves the issue for a short time. The problem seems to occur slightly more often when running on battery but I am not fully sure about that. Furthermore, only the Trackpoint of the ThinkPad itself is affected, I have not experienced this for the Trackpoint of my external ThinkPad Compact Keyboard .  I have the latest UltraNav drivers from the Lenovo website installed, version 19.0.17.22. Of course, I have taken out the rubber and checked for dust. The only thing left would be to try reproducing the issue using a Linux Live system but this is hard to do due to it occuring randomly. Does anyone have any guesses? Does this sound like a driver issue or something hardware related (some sort of loose contact or the like: Sometimes it seems that movement of the device causes the failure of the TrackPoint)? I feel a little reluctant to have replaced the mainboard on spec but I do not know what else to do. Thanks in advance.

Clunking the clunkpad is stressful both physicall for repetitive stress, the sound is psyhcologically stressful, and it is even annoying my coworkers. The driver update today Feb 28th does nothing to resolve the main problem, which is that there is no tap to click option for trackpoint users. You have to thunk and physically click when using the trackpoint. LENOVO, are there plans to fix this?

Answer:Are the plans to allow trackpoint tapping to click rather than clunking to click on the clunkpad?

Better yet, allow a trackpoint click to be registered with pressure rather than an actual tap. This would be ideal and maybe even better than the previous physical buttons.  Tell me this is coming and I won't return my t440s. It looks feasible, linux developers are implementing in their t440s driver.

I just rebuilt a R40 for a friend using an XP Professional SP3 CD.Once I had XP installed and the security updates loaded I installed the Lenovo System Update and got the drivers installed through that method.  It installed the current version of the UltraNav driver V14.0.18.0, but something screwy is going on. Sometimes during boot up the cursor will start hopping horizontally to the right edge of the screen.Trying to "force" it back doesn't work well as it keeps trying to "hop" off the right side of the screen. Also the UltraNav icon does not always show up on the taskbar even though I have it turned on. It does this (but not all of the time) either with or without a USB mouse installed. Just now it was behaving properly and I was using the USB mouse to change settings within the UltraNav control panel. I changed one of the settings and the cursor went into "stupid" mode right away and hopped off the right side of the screen. I now have it set so that the touchpad IS enabled and the trackpoint is DISabled. If I check the box to enable the trackpont the cursor immediately starts to hop off the right side of the screen and can not be controlled. I have to use the keyboard to turn off the trackpoint function and regain cursor control. Have I got bad hardware here or .... driver issues....Again the cursor "hops" off the screen in about 1/2" increments and is not drifting "smoothly" off-screen.... Thanks for any help!Jim

Answer:cursor / mouse hops horizontally across screen to the right - erratic w/ trackpoint enabled

Hi Jim,I suggest downloading and booting from a Live CD of any linux distro, if the curser also hops in linux then it definitely would be hardware issue.I also recommend running lenovo PC Doctor's diagnostic test on the keyboard.Hope it helps.

How come I don't have this option on my e220s? I want to tap my trackpoint to select

Answer:e220s trackpoint press-to-select?

Hello egodrunk

As I understand the issue, you are unable to do tapping on TouchPad

If this is the issue and TouchPad driver is installed then you can go to Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings and check Tapping option.

I've had my HP Envy for 10 months with no issues, but yesterday my touchpad started moving around randomly and I don't know why.The mouse seems to rarely go wrong UNTIL I right-click a few times (about 7), at this point it starts misbehaving. It tends to start by just jumping a few centimeters many times, then it starts to jump about 10+ centimetres at a time a few times, though if I leave it alone for a while after right clicking too many times it settles down. If I try to move the mouse while it is doing this, it will tend to slide back to where it started. Sometimes it begins doing this with no prompting. The longer it stays on, the worse these seem to get (sometimes it jumps around and clicks completely random things, usually it clicks on empty areas of the screen, it doesn't seem to be trying to accomplish anything except being unbelievably annoying) I didn't update my driver before this started happening and searched for multiple hours for a solution on various forums, to no avail. I've tried rolling back my driver, I've tried scanning my computer with Malwarebytes then disabling remote access (which was, for some reason, enabled, though clearly was not the problem). I've tried restarting the computer, updating the driver (no updates were available), clicking "Reset Devices" in the Synaptics settings menu (this seems to fix any fit the mouse is currently having in about 5 seconds, though it doesn't stop it forever), tinkering with Clickpad settings (as suggested by... Hello, My company has a number of HP Elitebook 840 G1's and G2's deployed. We're suddenly running into issues with some users having their mouse seem to suddenly be possessed, randomly clicking and moving all over until the trackpad is disabled. I've done all sorts of troubleshooting trying to narrow down the problem. I have... - Swapped out the chassis of the laptop (put the hard drive in a different laptop of the same model). It will come back up again. This has happened with multiple users after swapping so the likelyhood of this being a coincidence and being hardware on all those machines is low. - Updated ALL drivers and the bios on machines, still comes up. Rolled back specific drivers, still happens. Seemingly ruled out HP software and hardware issues. - Checked event viewer at the times of this happening across machines, no errors or warnings popping up. - Adjusted settings on the trackpads. This is not an issue of users bumping the trackpad or something of the sort. - No viruses/malware causing this. When the issue happens, the user can double tap the trackpad to disable it, and the issue stops. Enabling the trackpad makes it start again. Users can use a wireless mouse when trackpad is disabled without issue. This specific point makes it seem like a hardware problem, but as I said we've swapped out computers to known working machines and had the issue come back up. Sometimes for others this fixes the problem. I did some searchi... Read more

Haven't been able to activate the press-to-select feature on SL510 under Windows 7. Does anybody have it working under Windows 7 or other OS? I haven't been able to find a confirmation in any Lenovo literature as to whether this feature is available at all or not on the SL510. This feature is very important to me

Answer:SL510 trackpoint press-to-select not working?

I haven't got good news for you. :-( I found a way to enable press-to-select settings in GUI. You have to switch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPCpl\HideTrackPointPressToSelect from 1 to 0. Unfortunately press-to-select is not working regardless of setting I choose.

Is it just me, or do the X230's trackpoint buttons seem really low? They don't seem to have a bump in the front that makes them easy to press. This in addition to how slippery and low the point is compared to the one on my X201 makes pointing and clicking a miserable experience.

First off, I am no computer newbie, so I thought I had a clean computer without any outstanding spyware or viruses. I have run into a quite aggravating problem and have absolutely no clue what is causing it. I am quite unsure whether it is spyware or a hacker or some kind of mouse malfunction or what else.

Basically what happens is this: at any given random time, my pointer will move to the very top right corner of the screen and do a bunch of super-fast right-clicks and left-clicks, so that it closes out of any maximized windows and clicks any other buttons that happen to be lingering up there. This happens whether I am surfing the web, editing something in photoshop, in the middle of a computer game (really messes with your aiming ) or in any other given circumstance. I use windows XP, with Firefox browser, and am big on the p2p client, Limewire. I have run multiple spyware-removal programs and virus scans (Ad-aware, Spybot, Bazooka Scanner, Symantec Anti-Virus, Spysweeper) and have found nothing that points to such a problem. The only trace of spyware i have found is with the Bazooka scanner (Coolwebsearch toolbar), and i beleive even that one finding is inaccurate, for i have followed the instructions for removal exactly several times, I downloaded the coolwebsearch toolbar removal and ran that, and searched the registry manually for any conspicuous entries and deleted them. I have run Hijack this and removed any suspicious entries, only leaving about 4 or 5 of wh... Read more

Hi,I recently got a Thinkpad T440s and I have two problems when using the trackpoint:1) When trying to right click, I like to hit the uppermost part of the trackpad (where it is slanted). However, this registers as a left click. Is there a way to change this (and if not could someone explain to me the rationale behind this)?2) Is there a way to enable middle clicking without 3rd party software? So far, I have only found this thread which suggests using TPMiddle. I just wanted to ask if that's still the way to go.Thanks

Answer:T440s: Trackpoint + right click and middle click

Did you experiment with the settings in the "ThinkPad" tab within the Mouse Properties dialog? (Tap <WinKey>, type "mouse" and choose the Lenovo UltraNav item that is found.) I've noticed that if both TrackPoint and TrackPad are active, it tries to intelligently swtich the location of the right click for you .. but not always what you had in mind!

I reccently bought a T61p with Vista. I am a double arm amputee. I type with a prosthetic hook. I'm a big Thinkpad fan. This is  my third Thinkpad. One of the best features of the Thinkpad is the Trackpoint. The touchpads don't work with a prosthetic hook, which is why the Trackpoint is so valuable to me. The problem I'm experiencing is that the Press-to-select feature with Enable Dragging dosn't seem to work on my new T61p. I'm thinking it's a problem with the Vista drivers as my older T41 with XP using this fearure works. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I have had the same problem trying to disable press to select on a T60 with XP.  Fn-F8 should give access to all the properties of the trackpoint however I have discovered that you have to have both the trackpoint and the ultranav enabled in your bios - for some reason without the ultranav enabled it does not show all of the trackpoint features.Jon

Windows XP, Logitech MX1100 (wireless) and Logitech generic (wired).

OS intermittently (in intervals) just stops acknowledging mouse clicks, that is, clicking some window won't bring in front to become an active window.

Ignoring the mouse (mainly just LMB) happens every 15 minutes or so (with wired mouse also).

Along one "free" SW came unwanted Daelio Toolbar which I removed (Add or Remove Programs) which I suspect made "something" awry.
If Daelio Toolbar is indeed the cause, is my meager "arsenal" of avast! and Spybot with Ad-Aware Free enough?
What else could be the cause of such mis-behaviour?

Many thanks for suggestions!

Since the day before yesterday, I have been having a problem where my mouse double-clicks when I single-click. This happens sometimes when I open a program (I ended up opening a Firefox window with a session restore that I wanted as well as a second blank window. I didn't minimize the session restore one, so when I clicked the X on the blank window it closed both and I lost the session restore links since it closed both windows). When I right click to open a link in another tab, it sometimes opens the site in two tabs. When I click on the google window or the address window, all of the text is highlighted for replacement as if I clicked on the text twice.

I've only noticed this in XP, although I have only done a little work in Word over the last couple days.

I've looked in google and found a couple links that say it is a hardware related program (the mouse is a Logitech MX110 and I can't find it listed at their site for a driver). That is possible, but it has been very sudden AND it seemed to start after XP's latest auto-update (I really should update my OS to one of the professional ones because I've been complaining for years about XP Home's auto-update and reboot).

Is it possible that the latest XP update could have done something to the mouse driver? I should add that I think I'm still using the old Intelipoint driver with the Logitech mouse because I heard that the Logitech drivers were buggy.

Should I try updating the Intellip... Read more

It is likely a problem with the mouse itself. I have experienced the same issue and there are numerous reports of this problem ... and I include a link to one of them for your interest and amusement:

The problematic behaviour may come and go: In my own case, my problematic Logitech mouse has been behaving itself recently. I have not been able to find any reason for the variation in its behaviour from time to time. When it plays up, I simply resort to using another mouse for awhile.

Hello, Is there a way to have both - scrolling with trackpoint while holding the middle mouse button - and - being able do a middle click with the middle mouse button? I can accomplish this easily under Linux like it is described here. But under Windows it seems to be impossible. I can only have either middle clicking or trackpoint scrolling. I need both.  If anyone knows a solution to this please let me know. Walter (I have a X200s and Windows 7 x64 installed)

Yeah, this is easy in Linux can't we get some pressure to actually get this implemented properly in windows. Useability is the main reason i got a thinkpad it would be nice to know we could actually influence it in some way. (Bumping an old topic here)

Hey guys, this is my first posting, so I hope I get everything right. So, I have a weird problem. On my T440s, the trackpoint works alright when my computer wakes up from being shut off or standby. However, as soon as I do 2-4 clicks on my Trackpad, the trackpoint stops working. I did all Windows Updates, also did all Lenovo Updates, including of course the Ultranav Synaptics driver (reinstalled that several times, also as an administrator). Nothing worked. When my computer gets back from standby or from being shut off, the trackpoint works, even for longer periods of time. However, as soon as I use the touchpad to click a couple of times, it completely stops working and I can only get it to work again by restarting, going into standby or even installing a new driver (however, it then quits working again after a couple of touchpad-clicks). Any help / ideas would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:T440s Trackpoint shuts off due to clicking with touchpad

No help, welcome in world of new Lenovo clickpad design. It just work like that, i have same issue. If you can return it back, just return that and buy something else.

One of the tasks a fellow employee at work has to do is circle of a bunch of signature lines in a PDF document. The PDF document areas to circle are always the same and so there should be some program to automate this.

Basically the PDF is 20 pages and on about 10 of the pages there are areas for the customer to sign. They are different spots on these 10 pages (but consistent between customers). The task is basically going though with Adobe and using the red circle tool and drawing a circle around where the customer should sign on these 10 pages, then saves the PDF for the sales person to give to the customer.

I'm thinking that as long as the 20 pages are the same for customer A as they are for customer B (atleast on where to sign) and you setup Adobe Acrobat (or any particular reader/writer) for like 100% view and full screen that there should be a program out there that you can program to essentially macro this task out by doing it once and then it saves the mouse and click movements as well as keyboard strokes (page down).

Any ideas of such a program? Or any other method that you may find more efficient? Is AutoHotKey the best solution for something like this?

All I know is that spending 5 minutes going through 20 pages to circle 10 different spots many times a day is a waste of this guy's time.

Answer:Program for Mouse/Click Movement

This may sound silly, but if the PDF document areas are always the same why not modify the PDF to have the circles in the first place and just print the PDF when needed?

I've just gotten what I hoped would be an awesome new T540p.  So far, the experience is going horribly because I can't seem to use the Trackpoint reliably.  Specifically, when I click the trackpoint button on either side - left or right -(virtual buttons along the top edge of the clickpad), absolutely nothing happens.  No right click menu, no mouse click - no action of any kind is recorded.  Let me be clear - the clickpad is visibly and fully depressed.  There is no doubt at all that the clickpad has been depressed.  But there is no actual mouse click action.   In order for me to get a reliable "click" out of the Trackpoint click area on the clickpad, I have to move my thumb down and in to the tracking area of the clickpad.  This is very awkward and involves wrist movement.  Compare this to the superior design of the old T530 trackpoint buttons - they are angled and shaped so that they are perfectly located to be pressed by your thumb without having to bend your thumb or move your wrist, your fingers get to stay right on the home row where they belong. Lenovo:  I use and love the TrackPoint.  It and the keyboard are the reason I purchase thinkpads.  Without it, I could and would buy any other manufacturer.  Please put my TrackPoint buttons back.  Or at least let me choose to order the T540 with a T530 keyboard/trackpad so that we have a choice!  I would easily pay an extra... Answer:T540p Trackpoint - clicking virtual buttons on clickpad gives no response

You are not the only one experiencing these problems. For a TrackPoint user the new "clickpad" is a physically flawed design. Too much pressure is required for a click, and the erratic behavior has not disappeared with any of the driver updates.  It seems that the whole physical desing of the "clickpad" without separate mouse buttons is flawed. The ergonomics of the keyboard not very good either. I do not know any TrackPoint user who thinks the new desing usable at all. Some people liking it have written about it, but apparently most of the people who like the new desing are not TrackPoint users who do not move their hands when writing.

Hi,

I seem to have gotten a virus yesterday. I did nothing special, didn't download anything or go on sketchy sites.

The symptoms are:
Mouse movements horizontally, by a random amount of pixel between 0 and 100 roughly.
Mouse left/right-clicks
Both of above happen independently at a random interval between twice a second and once every 5 seconds.

Nothing suspicious on msconfig, registry, running processes etc
It's a very light setup with Windows 7 x64. I have development software /MSSQL/Office and some essentials on it and that's it. The partition is only 26gb.
It's not a hardware problem. It does it without a mouse connected.
There is not weird outgoing connections on netstat
I had Trend's Internet Security installed when it got infected

Today, I scanned with everything I can find in safe mode. There is no problems in safe mode. It didn't find any problems except some cookies
I boot back in normal mode and the mouse doesn't move randomly anymore. Trend Internet Security somehow stopped running and I can't uninstall it anymore.

I've had my y510p for about 3 months now (after it was replace because the first one I recieved went all crashy and insane). I "upgraded" windows 8 to windows 8.1 in a funny moment about a week after I got it - which over all seems to have gone totally fine. The elan touchpad has always been a little anoyingly "wooly" but basically functioned well. But about 3 weeks ago it started making little hops as I tapped meaning I clicked on the wrong thing and then it started sometimes wandering and jittering while my fingers were resting on it (especially anoying when using 2 finger scrolling). then it started going into a little dancing about mode where occassionally it starts hopping about and clicking on things. which is a total pain. It doesnt do it all the time but it seems to get more frequent. it also seems to increase with sonsistent use (like if im clicking arround on pinterst or something then it seems to get worse and worse - grounding issue?) Its anoying enough now that I dont trust it and as often as possible turn it off and use an external mouse - but obviously that not good enough. I have downloaded and installed the more recent drivers for windows 8.1 64bit from the lenovo website here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=DS037924 and its hard to say really but if anything that has made it marginally worse... Any help gratefully recieved - I really hope its a fixable software problem as I'm in the middle of a big p... Answer:Ideapad y510p elan touchpad erratic jumping and clicking

Unfortunately the drivers on the Lenovo website are quite old.  I got fed up with how the track pad works in the Y510P so I started experimenting with a variety of drivers.  The ELAN drivers I am using now are intended for Toshiba laptops but they work fine on the Y510P.  You can read more info starting here. http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/720343-ideapad-y510p-359.html#post9622928 I find that the track pad is a lot better with these drivers.  There are more adjustments and more features so you can get it working like how a track pad is supposed to work.   Lenovo has ignored this problem for months.  You will need to fix this problem yourself. I plan to write a clear guide this weekend with lots of pictures to show you exactly what needs to be done to install these drivers into a Lenovo Y510P.

Hi all, I have an E540 and Windows 8 (I also have Linux and the problem doesn't happen there, its just in Windows 8). I can use tap to click when I navigate with the trackpad. However, as soon as I start using the trackpoint, I can no longer tap to click. When I go back to using the trackpad, tap to click starts working again. I've tried fiddling with the settings in control panel, but haven't found anything to change it yet (tap to click is checked there)

Answer:Tap to click not working when using trackpoint

Hi Gibba,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with Tack pad on ThinkPad E540.

Please go to control panel -- mouse ? UltraNav ? Track Pad setting and Check the box Enable press to select option.
If you are unable to find UltraNav option, the you have to install touchpad drivers for that.

Click here to check the track pad setting.

Hope this helps.

We are starting to Roll out the T440s laptop. We are running into issues with the Trackpad like everyone else. It appears that if I want to use the Right-Click button in the upper corner I can only do so if I am using the Trackpoint. If I use the trackpad and try to Right-Click in the upper corner it does nothing. If I use the lower corner it works 50% of the time.If I use the Trackpoint and the upper right corner it works. However if I use the lower right it does not. Is there a way to change the behavior of the Trackpad/point so that I can use either the upper right and lower right at all times? It's going to be a pain to train users to use only the bottom or top depending on if they are using the Trackpad/Point.Thanks!

Answer:T440s Top Right-Click only works with TrackPoint

Hello.

I initially had this experience with my first Clickpad equipped machine, which was a T440s, and since I am a die-hard TrackPoint enthusiast, I simply disabled the touchpad in BIOS. It worked fine like that for me, but when I got my Helix, I decided to tinker with it for it to better suit my needs, and what I did was to make the right click areas bigger in the UltraNav config utility (Control Panel -> Mouse -> ThinkPad tab), and select Large in the button size.

After I did this, my whole experience of the Clickpad changed to the better, so I've enabled the touchpad again on my T440s, and the device is just superb to work on now. Sometimes I actually find myself using the touchpad, tapping (two finger tap for right click) and gestures specially, which I hardly ever do on my older ThinkPads.

Screenshot of my settings.

See if this helps you out.

I found a software bug for synaptics driver.  I am using the latest: 18.0.7.40, 5/26/2014, windows 8.1. The bug is related to unreliable middle clicking (not to be confused with TpScroll ), when the user middle clicks on the trackpoint, the OS doesn't register it.  It is possible this is a settings issue, maybe it's a "feature".  If so, can someone provide instructions on how to change it. It seems the synaptics firmware will only pass a middle click to OS if the pointer moves at the same time.  I have not tried this on Linux. To reproduce errant behavior I (this will NOT register a middle click)1. make sure middle clicks are enabled in the mouse properties and TpScroll is off2. make sure you have an application that works with middle click or displays L/M/R click state received by the OS (I am using X-Mouse button control)3. with finger clear of trackpoint, middle click with thumb4. I recently got my T400, and installed the newest synaptics driver Now the middle-click on the trackPoint doesn't do middle click anymore (i.e. open new tab in firefox)What's worse is that everytime I click the middle button, my screensaver comes on.The left and right click seem to work fine.  This didn't happen before I installed the synaptics driver.I need the synaptics driver so the TackPad can do scrolling, but now this! This is extremely annoying. anyone else have this problem? I'm running on Windows XP Pro, 2.53GHz, Camera, Fingerprint, Bluetooth.

Answer:TrackPoint middle click turns on my screensaver?!!

Hello,I just fixed a similar problem. Like you, I found that my middle button no longer functioned like I was used to when I updated my system. If you go into the synaptics settings, under UltraNav>Track Point, make sure you select "Neither" in the box labeled "Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function."I hope that works for you.

Hello, Im having problems with the trackpoint on my T500 Thinkpad, thats possiby only 3 weeks old. Everything was fine for a while, but then one day, everytime I tried to use the trackpoint the cursor switches to the middle click icon and refuses to move, unless I use the USB mouse plugged in or use the track pad. I can move the cursor with the trackpoint if I hold the middle button down, but other than that the trackpoint is useless Ive uninstalled and reinstalled the driversIve done the above and included the ultranav utility for good measure Nothing seems to work. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Using Win 8.1 x64 and the latest Synaptics drivers, if I'm typing or holding a key the left click does not work. I've tried every setting in the Synaptics control panel and can't figure out how to disable this behavior. Does anyone know how to disable this? It's very annoying, especially as there is a delay after pressing a key before I can click the mouse of around a half second. Easily recreated by opening notepad and holding down the A key, then trying to left click something.

I have the X1 Carbon Touch thinkpad with Windows 8 and I just noticed that I need to click on the touchpad real hard for the click to register. Tapping works fine but clicking requires me to apply a lot of pressure. I have restored the default settings of the touchpad and still have this problem. Are there any known issues with Touchpad click issues and requiring a hard presss?

Answer:X1 Carbon touchpad requires a hard touchpad press and click for click to register

Hi, vtjiggy

Does this apply to the entire TrackPad? Do both left and right-clicking require a great deal of force? You could also try installing the latest Synapatics driver and see if that helps at all. Synaptics is the company that develops UltraNav, which is installed on all ThinkPad systems by default. The latest driver can be found here.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes,
Adam

Hi,

Please could someone point me to a way of making it so that when I press the Power Button on my Windows 10 desktop that the computer will power down without me having to click with the mouse to turn off various programs or clicking the "restart anyway" button that appears. I managed to do this with windows XP in the past. I think it might have been a registry alteration?

Thanks for any advice?

Answer:Switch off PC without mouse clicking when press the Power Button

You can press power button any time to power down the computer . But it is not recommended .for several reasons one is that something may be running in the back ground The proper way to shut down a computer is to click the windows button in the bottom left then click power then it gives you three options -Restart, Sleep, Shut down. That is the only way I have ever known to power down a computer

I have a user that has a 2nd Generation X1 Carbon (the type with virtual buttons on the Synaptics TrackPoint/TrackPad.   The user is complaining that a context sensitivie menu (of the type that a right click would initiate) intermittently is shown when she left clicks.  She normaly uses the TrackPad but does use the TrackPoint on ocassion.  Here's what I've done so far: 1) I initially thought it was the TrackPad and had Lenovo Support replace it.  The problem was reduced but is still occurs. 2) I've installed current UltraNav drivers and updated all other drivers to current levels.  The WIndows 10 is also updated to current patches.  I would try setting the UltraNave to "Click Anywhere" but that disables the TrackPoint feature that is ocassionally used.  Has anyone seen this happen before and know a fix for this?

I have had this problem for quite a while and I just noticed that after reboot, my wheel settings jumps to 14 lines per click. I can set it back to 1,2,3 etc, and it slows, but it has no affect on the REAL problem.

I've seen this problem discussed on the web, but no real resolution without jumping through hoops. I think I know how to fix it, but I need this forum's guidance. This is not a cleaning problem, there seems to be some kind of interference. Here's what happens. In Firefox, I might wheel down a page, but when new lines are about to appear from below, all of a sudden, lines that I've already wheeled past appear at the bottom of the page and start to scroll up. Or.....

In Paint Shop Pro, I might wheel to make the image smaller, it doesn't seem to change and all of a sudden, after further scrolling it snaps to significantly smaller. Same for using the mouse to increase the size of an image on the screen

I've attached an image of the Device Manager. It shows both the microsoft mouse and a "HID Compliant Mouse." If I disable the latter, nothing changes, the problem persists. If I disable the first one, the mouse completely stops working. I don't think this is the problem, I think it is the USB listing.

I attached a pic of the Device Manager listing of USB ports. There are far too many. My HP Entertainment laptop (which I love, BTW) has 3 USB 2 ports and a USB/SATA port (faster than the USB 2s). But look at the Device Manager. It looks like I have between ei... Read more

I have a brand new T510, coming from a T61p. Everything is GREAT but ONE thing... Occasionally when I am using the trackpointer (which I do often) the left click button will lose the click that it has, let me try and explain... I click down to grab a window and drag it, start dragging, suddenly without depressing the button at all, it just drops the window, and then the click kicks back on a split second later either grabbing something else or clicking something else giving it the focus. I can replicated it occasionally and opened paint, started drawing a long curvy line without unclicking the button and the line ends up with breaks in it! Has anyone had this issue? It is VERY irritating...

Answer:Issue with left click on trackpoint, touchpad and mouse - Lenovo T61

Hello,

A few things to try:

?  Create a new user account, login using that and see if the problem still occurs.  If the problem goes away, then it is due to software running under your user account.
?  Start Windows in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs.  If the problem goes away, it was due to an application which runs on startup.
?  Boot the computer from a Linux Live CD/USB and see if the problem still occurs.  If it does, then the problem is not due to the operating system and you are dealing with a hardware issue.

In the case of the latter, the usual fix would be to replace the keyboard.

Hi there, So the other night I (quite stupidly) spilt water on my trackpad. I put it straight in the airing cupboard to dry it out for 2 days, and everything works fine except for my trackpad and the left-click button of my trackpoint. Is there anything I can do about this? Is it possible to repair the trackpoint? (I don't use the trackpad)Will sending it back to Lenovo (UK) do anything?

Answer:Spilt water on T420 - Trackpad and Trackpoint L-Click not working

Remove your keyboard and palmrest and clean up everything you can find with Isopropyl alcohol paying close attention to connectors. It doesn't take much to cause an issue with the keyboard connector. If the keyboard is gunked up you can always buy another keyboard on eBay. Good luck

Issue 1: When I vertical scroll in a web page (Chrome & MSIE) by dragging TrackPoint (stick) while holding down left UltraNav button, the cursor moves but the web page fails to scroll, or demonstrates scroll latency of about .5 to 1 second behind the stick movement.  Sometimes, I have to try a couple times to get the scrolling to occur. Issue 2: Very often I must double click on UI buttons and web page links with the UltraNav button, when I should, traditionally, only have to click once. Received the T510 about 7 days ago.  i5, Win7 64bit, integrated graphics.  I've disabled all eye candy and set theme to classic.  Updated to latest available UltraNav and display driver.  I've tried just about every adjustment in the mouse and UltraNav settings, going as far as disabling the touchpad and touchpad filters. Synaptics driver info:Driver provider: SynapticsDriver date: 3/24/2011Driver version: 15.2.19.0Download from: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-66898File: 6hgx37ww  This is truly annoying and I'm about to return this laptop.  I hate to resort to that.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  I've used a T43 and T61 for the last 7 years at work and never had this issue.  I love T-model Thinkpads, but this is a poor experience.

Answer:T510: TrackPoint scrolling hesitates and left single click often ignored

1. Does vertical scroll work elsewhere? Like in Adobe Reader or a long Wordpad document?2. Same here; do clicks work elsewhere?I've only seen the delay when my CPU is being maxed out and SynTPEnh.exe doesn't intercept the middle-drag in time.

On a fresh Window 7 install it is possible to tap-to-click when using the Trackpoint rather than pressing down on the Clickpad (which is *very* noisy compared to the X220/X230 buttons and requires far more force). This is very nice alternative to using the Clickpad for left/middle/right button clicks when using the Trackpoint only. It requires almost no force, it generates zero noise and is very comfortable. Unfortunately, upon installing the Synaptics Ultranav drivers from Lenovo SU, this function is no longer present! You MUST click down the Clickpad otherwise it is not possible to register a left/right/middle click when using the Trackpoint. Even with Touchpad enabled this functionality is not present, which is quite baffling because you would expect that when the Trackpoint is used, the touchpad should behave as mouse buttons + gestures + scroll zones. I remember that there were plenty of tricks that could be done through registry entries to enable/disable "hidden" functions of the Synaptics driver. Is there a knowledge base that I could browse and find out if there is a way of enabling the tap-to-click feature when using only the Trackpoint?

Answer:L440 Clickpad - "Tap to click" function not working in "Trackpoint Only" mode

Hi Harris,

could you clarify / confirm that the "press to select" function was present and you were able to utilise it please?

To my knowledge on the previos SL series and the current L series this was/is not a feature which was/is offered although it was a feature on T and X series up to and including the *30 series systems.  There is also no mention of this feature in the PSREF documents.

The new 2014 X1 Carbon got rid of the physical buttons for the trackpoint.   I am adjusting to that.  However, in more than one unit we are piloting we have an issue. A user that mainly uses the TrackPoint stick, will use their right thumb to left click constantly.  We are finding it to not be consistent.  And it often results in the user having to click twice on things. We have tried to adjust the "Edge Tap Filtering" - though I don't think that is related, as that is focused on taps, not clicks. Some people tried to turn off the "middle button" and focus there thumb more towards there.Overall, we believe the adapative keyboard, the physical keyboard changes and the trackpad button changes are all things people can evolve and get used to.   HOWEVER, if left-clicking is not accurate, it will drive people crazy and hurt our forecasted 500+ unit order. I am praying this can be resolved by a driver update.

Hello,

I'm here to notify a huge problem with the keyboard.
To play some games like Minecraft you need to press some keys (ZQSD to walk and jspace to jump), but the keyboard automatically release all the keys when one key is released.

Only specials keys like Ctrl, Shift, Fn or Alt works.
I checked it with a soft like Keyboardtest, so it's definitely a problem from keyboard.
I verified also with external keyboard and it works.

I hope this problem will be fixed, it's really a bad problem, what the hell is this.

Think I might return it as I just don't enjoy using it.

Quick simple question really.
Let me explain.... i love free sites... mainly cause I got no money(plus a free ones provide much more help then the paid ones... i've tried once)..., but I do try to support them. And from my understanding their revenue comes from advertising.
Sooo... whenever I go to a site that is free I always click on the ads, and I wait, wait and wait till they load in....
... so the question is... how soon can I just close the window for my "Click" to register IT as a referral?

when using the touch screen, if you long press (hold your finger down in the same place) this is equivalent to a right click on the mouse pad. My question is, is it possible to remove this command? There are many things i do on my computer like play games and such that require me to hold my finger in the same place for an extended period of time. The problem is that many of the apps I use, a "right click" is used as a back buttom. So when i long press the touch screen while playing my game, this effectivly exits the game... Can the long press "Right Click" on the touch screen be removed? Thanks

Answer:How to remove the command of a Long Press on touch screen equals a "right click"

There are a few things you can configure about touch screen behavior for Windows.  I can tell you how to do it with Windows 10.  Windows 8 is probably similar. Go    Control Panel -> Pen and Touch For the specific issue of disabling the right click behavior: For Touch, select "Press and hold".Click "Settings".Uncheck the enabling box at the top of the settings dialogue. (I was myself trying to figure out how to configure touch screen behavior for Windows 10, and this thread (even though not helpful) was one of the few hits I got googling the question.  I eventually found the answer, so I thought I would come back here and post a relevant pointer.  There is so little on this aspect of touch for Windows that others looking for info may also wind up here.  You won't find Pen and Touch under Settings - just the Control Panel.)

When I click on anything I usually only have to single click to bring up whatever, about 50 percent of the time when I click on something it preforms a double-double-click and will bring up the next two pages of what ever, because the single clicks are performing twice.

I had a friend set up my computer two years ago and he fixed it so everything would perform with a single click instead of a double-click and I don't know how to fix the problem of the single click doing two double-clicks at once.

How do I fix so the single click will only perform one double-click at a time?
